Walking that tightrope

The definition of a tightrope is a tightly stretched piece of rope on which someone balances and performs tricks in a circus. The definition of a salon tightrope in 2021: balancing being a busy salon owner with all the added demands and business worries that the pandemic has caused as well as maintaining creativity, keeping your team motivated and making your clients look and feel good! This is the huge challenge faced by all salons at the moment and is something that is touched upon in the Hooker & Young In Conversation with Rainbow Room’s Suzie McGill and Dylan Brittain in this month’s interview on page 9. Like a tightrope – every salon owner and stylist is feeling stretched at the moment – in business and in many other ways. Keeping on top of the new normal day to day running of a salon, the demands of lockdown-fatigued clients and ensuring a happy and motivated team is a tough balancing act. We hope our diverse range of articles from business experts and successful salon owners (who themselves are experiencing the same challenges as you) will help in some way as you keep your balance over the next few months.

In June, Rainbow Room International will welcome a small group of youngsters from the Action for Children charity to start their hairdressing Level 1 qualification. Leigh Kerr, Rainbow Room International Academy Director, commented, “At Rainbow Room International our priority plan this year, particularly after the effects of the pandemic, is to focus on the mental wellbeing of all of our teams. The training provided by Action for Children has been invaluable to us, allowing us to be a lot more knowledgeable on mental health and how we can help and support ourselves, our teams and our clients.”

Suzie McGill & Dylan Brittain Michael: So, let’s jump straight in, was it always hairdressing for both of you? Dylan: Actually, when I left school, I was a joiner. Michael: No way! Dylan: Why does everyone always sound so surprised when I say that? I did it for around two years, but I absolutely hated it! So one day I just handed in my notice and that was the end of that! I then enrolled at college to do Business Studies at which point I must have been about 18, and did that till I was 21 and then went straight into hairdressing.

In this month’s feature we talk our dear friends Suzie McGill & Dylan Brittain of the highly acclaimed Rainbow Room International. As Schwarzkopf UK ambassadors they are renowned for their award-winning collections, incredible stage shows and directional education. We caught up with them for a virtual cuppa and a chat to talk all things hair. loved it. I worked in Linda’s salon which at the time was the creative hub of the company with so many talented people working out of there, I just loved everything about it and the social side of it was amazing too! Michael: What about you Suzie?

Gary: Was hairdressing always something you had in the back of your mind? Dylan: I guess I’d always wanted to do something more creative, and I really loved the social aspect of things hence why I enrolled in college – looking back I enjoyed being a student more than I enjoyed business studies. I was drawn more to fashion than hair initially and applied to the London College of Fashion but also applied to Rainbow Room at the same time. It was Linda who interviewed me and I got the job, which was great and as soon as I started, I

Suzie: I wasn’t really great at school – in fact I was awful. My school had sent me for an interview to Hamilton college and on my way, I walked past Irvine Rusk’s salon and I thought – I don’t want to go to college – so I popped in, asked for a job and got it! So, I started there pretty much straight away at 15 and stayed there till I was 19 at which point I moved to London. Gary: That was a big step – did you get straight into a salon?

Suzie: For the first six months I actually worked in Whistle’s clothes store – I’d decided to leave hairdressing and enjoy my time there for a while, but I missed it too much and made the decision to get back into a salon. I went to Charles Worthington first and was there for around three years, so quite a while really – I then met Robert Morrison who was the Art Director at Trevor Sorbie at the time and he said “why don’t you come to Sorbie’s and do your vardering?” So I did, completed that in six weeks and stayed there for about three years. Gary: I’m guessing this is when you moved back to Scotland? Suzie: No, I’d started doing more session work at this point and joined a salon called Zoo which did a lot of session work which was perfect for me at the time, I also had just had

my son, so I was there for quite a while. I didn’t actually move back to Scotland till 2000 and I just wanted to come home – my son was now seven and I was missing my family and wanted to be back in Glasgow. This is when I joined Rainbow Room and the rest is history! Michael: I’m guessing this is when the two of you met? Suzie: We actually already knew each other from when I used to come back to hang out with my Glasgow pals, we all knew the same people, so we’d go out a lot. Gary: Were the two of you working in the same salon at this point? Suzie: No, I went to work in the Great Western Road salon and pretty much joined the Art Team straight away – started doing loads of stuff with Schwarzkopf and everything just started to build from there. Michael: When did the two of you start working together creatively? Suzie: We were always hanging out as best mates and we just gravitated towards each other creatively. Michael: And then you became hair husband and wife. Dylan: After working together for so long it felt like a natural progression to start collaborating creatively, but it wasn’t really planned – it just happened organically. Don’t get me wrong – we challenge each other, but in a good way – we never take offence at anything either of us have an opinion on, but it pushes us to be better. Suzie: We don’t throw the brush at each other. Michael: People always assume that when you’re part of a big company with bags of creativity and multiple award wins under your belt that there’ll be loads of aspiring hairdressers wanting to follow in your footsteps. We feel what people want has changed over the years and as a company have only a handful of people who want to pursue the artistic side of the industry. Suzie: We have a handful of people who are super creative and love that side of the industry, but I think it’s a different time now, a different generation where people want different things.

Michael: Yeah, I think you’re right. When I was starting out, I felt like I was one of many who shared the same ambition to make a name for myself within the industry. Don’t get me wrong, there are still loads of insanely talented hairdressers breaking through, but I don’t see the same level of passion for hair. Suzie: Yeah 100% – social media has changed all of that because people think they can be ‘superstars’ overnight and they’re more bothered about Instagram likes than practicing great hair on a model. Dylan: I’d say things have changed massively over the last 15 years, even just the social aspect of hairdressing. I mentioned earlier about how much I loved the social side of hairdressing, where we would all go out most nights, even weeknights were amazing! But it’s just not like that now, people don’t need to physically meet up anymore because you can do that online. Everybody seems more precious of their time – it’s different now, people are different and I don’t just mean in hairdressing. In Glasgow, going out on a weeknight just isn’t a done thing now. But this also impacts on the creativity, because if you’re not willing to give up your own time then the creative stuff doesn’t happen. As an employer you can’t make people stay behind after their working day to do artistic stuff, it’s got to be a passion and their own choice. Michael: It’s kind of like a pandemic itself! If general attitudes don’t change towards the craft, then the ‘artistic’ creative side of hairdressing runs the risk of dying out.

Gary: You both have a franchise with Rainbow Room – how long have you each had them? Suzie: Mine is exactly 14 years old this June which I have with my sister Sam. Dylan: And mine will be 13 years now, I have it in partnership with one of my good friends Yasmin. Michael: So pretty much the same time then. Suzie: Yeah, very close together and it’s great! All 12 salons are doing really well. Dylan: To be honest, neither me nor Suzie do any of the business side of things whatsoever! Sometimes we go into directors meetings and they start talking about figures and we just look at each other. But seriously we have a business partner to look after the business side of things which allows us to focus on the creative part. Gary: You’re lucky! We both gravitate towards the creative side too but have had to learn to do both sides. I was recently asked to comment on the budget for the BBC national news and I thought OH MY GOD! I better brush up! Michael: Let’s just say we had more than a few run throughs. It went well though. Gary: Do you still work a full week in the salon doing clients? Suzie: Yeah, we’re both doing five days at the moment but when education takes back off that will change, and it’ll be four days doing clients. Michael: I guess with you both having business partners it allows you to work more on the salon floor. I work a six day week, but it’s broken down into office days and salon days – maybe I need a secretary? Suzie: What about you Gary? Are you still working in the salon? Maybe you could be Michael’s secretary? Gary: I don’t think so! I’ll stick to doing clients thank you – besides he wouldn’t want me interfering with his technical stuff! Now that we’re out of lockdown – what are your hopes for the industry moving forward? Suzie: I hope that hairdressers realise the importance of being with a successful reputable company and all the benefits that go

Gary: Congratulations on Hall of Fame Dylan – that’s a huge achievement! 100% – you’ve got to put the business first before you start spending money on photoshoots – we feel the same and haven’t shot as much this year.

with it – great training and great opportunities. I know that a lot of salons have had staff leave since reopening which is really sad – claiming all the furlough during lockdown then leaving once salons re-open. If you decide to go freelance or rent a chair you don’t have the support mechanism behind you which ultimately can end badly and effect people’s mental health.

Michael: It’s a tough one, because the collections are what keep your profile up there, so the success of the business and the creative stuff go hand in hand, I think.

Dylan: I do believe that one of the good things to come out of the pandemic and ‘lockdown’ is understanding how important it is to have security in employment. The furlough scheme alone was amazing for the employed and there’s the support and contact you get from the company which definitely helped people through lockdown – it’s like being part of a family.

Suzie: Also, other hairdressers see the creative stuff which leads to better recruitment, and you end up attracting better people. Gary: What are your aspirations both creatively and in business? Suzie: In business I’d say continued success and creatively to keep exploring new things within myself and keep educating others which I find massively inspirational.

Michael: I do think the rise of the self-employed hairdresser is a threat to the industry, however after being locked down for seven months in the last year I’m not convinced that clients will want their colour rinsed off over the kitchen sink and really believe that everyone is loving the ‘salon experience’ more than ever. Gary: Yeah, but salons that are opening and offering the self-employed hairdresser a space to do their clients is a different model and still offers a salon experience and probably at a cheaper price. Is this not also a threat to the salons who employ their team? Dylan: It definitely is, just look at parts of America – it’s massive over there and normally that ends up filtering through to the UK. It’s already started happening over here and that will grow over the next 10 years I reckon. Michael: Let’s just hope that the professionalism and high standards of a fantastic reputable salon supersedes everything else and clients don’t make decisions on price and go looking for a cheaper alternative. Dylan: Hairdressing and retail are facing the toughest time ever, but I think you’re right – those who get it right will have continued success – it’s about offering an incredible experience to make people want to return and then the price isn’t an issue. It’s fact that people’s savings are at an all-time high in the UK due to lockdown and at some point, they’re going to start spending again. Hairdressing definitely has the feel-good factor and that puts us in a strong position, although people may

Dylan: To get a vaccine passport and go on holiday! But seriously, in business – I love watching the younger team succeed and to know you are a part of that is an amazing thing. Creatively, we love flying the flag for Scotland at the British Hairdressing Awards and would love the opportunity to represent Scotland in British Hairdresser of The Year category – that would be incredible! not be spending on clothes or other things, they will spend money on things that make them look and feel good – so I honestly believe that – if we as an industry are offering an amazing service, people will spend their money on feeling good. Michael: We recently collaborated together on a new colour collection for Schwarzkopf, which was amazing and such a thrill to work with you guys on! Has it kickstarted the creativity and got you thinking about future shoots? Dylan: Totally! It was amazing to all work together on the new collection – such a great collaboration. The images are so cool and fresh, it was so good to be shooting again!!! Suzie: Absolutely – we were both so excited about working together on this and love the collection. It definitely got us thinking about shooting more and doing collections for BHA’s but it’s going be tough for many people financially this year, I think. We can only hope that this year’s BHAs go ahead – I think it will for sure, and Dylan gets his Hall of Fame Award, so it’ll be a great night for us.

Michael: Alan and Linda were recently awarded with an OBE – that is so incredible! You must be so proud. Dylan: It’s so incredible – for them to be recognised for their contribution to hairdressing is amazing and so well deserved. They’ve given so much to the industry – created so many jobs and massively deserve it. Suzie: We are super proud of them – it’s amazing. We know first-hand how hard they’ve worked over the years and for them to be awarded an OBE each is just incredible. These two guys are definitely ‘Hair Husband & Wife’ and I think they rather suit that label. Their paths were meant to cross and it’s easy to see why - a working relationship that has stood the test of time leading them both to award winning success. With a shared passion for the hair industry and a steadfast loyalty to the company they love, it’s easy to see why they’ve had such amazing success and longevity in British hairdressing. We salute you Suzie & Dylan.

Talent spotting down under

As a salon owner of Rock Paper Scissors, Fremantle, Western Australia, stylist, educator, art director, session stylist and mentor, PAULINE McCABE’s love of art has defined her career and ensured that her hair work is always creatively a cut above. Over the past six months she’s fed us some beautiful work from artists from her side of the world.

For this issue however we felt it was time to award credit where it’s due and turn the tables of this very talented individual and feature her latest collection which has found her in the finals of the AHIA Australian Hairdresser of the Year 2021.

Here Pauline talks about the concept behind her fabulous collection UNREAL: “This collection speaks of the time we are in and the future that lies ahead, which at times has felt UNREAL, as though we are in a sci-fi movie. I hoped to express many of the feelings and thoughts I had into this collection which has a futuristic feel, as well as the difficult times we are experiencing, there has also been feelings of community and hope. I have been influenced by the work of Olafer Eliesson and his use of colour to create an experience for the viewer. The make up is hyper real and the models represent the diversity of beauty, strong female leads, almost futuristic warriors. Woman hear me roar!”

Conquering Colour Continuing his series, BHA Colour Technician of the Year 2020 and Global Colour Director at D&J Ambrose, Clayde Baumann, grants us an in-depth look at each of the stunning images in his winning collection.

H

ow bored are you of seeing mouse brown and salt-and-pepper grey hair “Post Rona”?! Coppers and Reds are back (or at least I’m hell bent on bringing them back at D&J Ambrose!) with celebrities like Rihanna and Emma Stone revisiting the vibrant tones in 2021 so let’s explore the couture element of these shades.

To date, this image is still one of my most posted, printed and featured images spanning my competitive career. This fifth and penultimate image in my six-part series with Professional Hairdresser was an obvious addition to my winning collection and was sourced from my 2017 Collection: 4AM.

The Look Inspired by “Hoxton Hipsters” and the East London Nightclub Culture, this wet look is achieved by pre-lightening the roots and deepening the ends to create a reverse-ombré.

I dubbed this technique “Illuminaire” in 2014. This is a technique that offers a huge variety of styling options when creating inspirational imagery for a ‘couture colour’ vibe.

Let’s talk technique With the final result in mind and knowing that the hue was to be in a warm spectrum, I can confidently pre-lighten the hair damp. The added water in the hair allows me to create a seamless merge between the light roots and contrasting dark ends. Making those merges masterfully seamless brings confidence to a dry styled finish also. Remember H2O and time are resources just like your products and tools.

Some looks are not for the average person… ... and this is no exception. Instead, this is a great opportunity to talk about creating high fashion looks for the competitive arena. Creating beautiful contrasting colour so that you get that “how’d-they-do-that?” result holds its beauty in simplicity – a shift in perspective can change the entire way you see colour placement. Practicing techniques like this help to encourage lateral thinking. It’s important to think about how you can utilise the colour history so when creating your next creative colour technique, think about what you’re leaving behind rather than what you’re putting in – take it and make it part of your process.

Suzie McGill

After over a year of enforced embracing of our natural locks, we had one question. Is natural the new normal? Here’s what the hairdressing industry had to say…. “In terms of styling, clients are more inclined to experiment with natural styles from having breaks from heated styling tools during the lockdown period but not only that, natural hairstyles are also incredibly on trend at the minute and have been showcased on recent catwalks. Clients are now looking for hair products that can enhance natural styles and this is where us as stylists can chat to our clients about haircuts that can enhance their natural hair texture.” Suzie McGill, Owner of Rainbow Room International’s Uddingston Salon, Schwarzkopf UK Ambassador and International Artistic Director at Rainbow Room International

“A lot of clients have learnt to love their natural texture and curls in lockdown and are now fully embracing it! Previously some clients would want to disguise their curls – now they are excited to wear their hair in new styles that enhance their curls, and we’re of course teaching them how to look after it at home, including product recommendations such as Aveda’s Be Curly range which is designed to enhance curls, increases shine and reduce frizz.” Robert Eaton, Creative Director at Russell Eaton Salons

?

“I find that clients are now wanting their overall look to be much softer, versatile and natural. For men we are seeing lots of tight, tapered clean perimeters but maintaining a softer texture throughout for a natural feel. For my female clients, I’m finding that low maintenance haircuts are still the go to. Healthy and polished styles but not overly ‘done’. Clients are asking for that ‘wash and go’ type of vibe that won’t take lots of styling.” James Alfie Parr, Session Stylist

“I am beginning to see a lot more of my female clients looking for almost ‘wash and go’ haircuts to benefit their natural curl or just amplify and expose some softer texture. I am a big fan of this movement because I think any way to get clients more experimental is better in the long run. Key to this is making sure that they have proper aftercare and better understanding on how and when to use it making retailing products not only easier but significantly more important. I have been doing this by trying to gage a better understanding of my clients desired end result and prescribing the steps to achieve that. I have seen a lot more interest in products such as the Fudge Professional Curl Revolution Mist for those natural curls to keep them looking soft, healthy and defined.” Jonathan Andrew, Paul Mitchell Fudge Professional Global Brand Ambassador

“Clients are embracing their natural colour and texture, which is an exciting new direction and a positive change. It is an opportunity to introduce these clients to new styling tools, home care treatments, toners, temporary sprays.....I really feel it’s a new, exciting journey for the client and the hairdresser.” Kerry Mather, KJM Salons Fleet

“Over the past few weeks since re-opening, I have found that clients are opting for more subtle looks, which look extremely natural. Ombre is the most popular request from clients, with a darker root drag and lighter ends, blended to give a real relaxed feel. This technique works well with a natural texture or when styled therefore has become a must have for those looking for a more natural vibe.” Barry Maddocks, Harington’s Winchester

“For blondes, many are looking to continue with a lower maintenance colour and instead, opting for services such as lowlights and adding root stretches to tone down their hair and that require less trips to the salon. For brunettes and redheads, we will notice clients still coming into the salon to have their hair colour freshened up but looking for quicker services such as semi-permanents and glossing, which can be used to add vibrancy and gloss to their natural hair colour and that fade out beautifully.” Suzie McGill, Owner of Rainbow Room International’s Uddingston Salon, Schwarzkopf UK Ambassador and International Artistic Director at Rainbow Room International Simon Hill

“In all honesty, we have seen a real mix of clients, who are opting for more natural styles and others who want some more bold and creative. Many have been choosing services such as glossing or a few scattered highlights or babylights around the face to enhance their complextion. We also have the clients that have missed the salon so much they are going for a more creative, statement look. Pastels, rainbow and bold balayage have been hugely popular with our clients, with the styles being finished with our signature wave as well as short sharp pixie cuts. Having a variety in the salon makes our days so interesting and a challenge!” Safy Burton, Safy B Salon Safy Butron

“During the first month since re-opening we have noticed a definite increase in clients requesting their natural hair colour and texture with a little tweak here and there to perfect it. From roots to their natural curl pattern we have noticed this across the board. Blondes are opting for a softer root melt blended into highlights and brunettes are requesting glossing treatments to refresh their own colour rather than opting for darker tints etc. We have also noticed this in terms of styling. Clients are more willing to experiment with their natural texture and are seeking products that will help them with this.” Simon Hill, Owner of SESH Hairdressing

Paul Falltrick

“Like many people we have had a lot of clients begin to grow out their colour in favour of the natural grey. This doesn’t mean the end of colour services, instead you can keep these clients as colour clients by adding more grey tones to their hair. We use the Nutri Color Filters by Revlon Professional, they are completely customisable, and give creative control with incredible results. This is still incredibly appealing to clients as they don’t have to cover up the natural colour or their roots and instead, we can enhance what they already have whilst making it look vibrant, exciting and healthy.” Paul Falltrick, co-owner of gfc Hairdressing Paul Falltrick

Going grey Thomas Hills

“I have always championed silver hair, and after a long, and very grey lockdown (in more ways than one), many clients will look to enhance their greys now rather than disguise them. While grey and its many incarnations never go out of style, metallic silver is, for me, the next level of chic, and can really help to bring a haircut to life. I particularly love creating a multi-dimensional metallic tone for a serious statement and a colour that screams confidence with an icy-cool appeal.” Thomas Hills, Director, TH1 HAIR

“Our hair and greying locks would all be in a sorry state without any colour enhancement at all. However, we have found that some clients are looking for more of a low maintenance colour service where their natural colour is coming into play. Nothing is more ageing than the salt and pepper effect, but again, rather than an all over tint, which the client will have to deal with every few weeks, foiling placement and clever colour choice can turn these looks into something chic and stunning.” Tracy Hayes, Global Colour Ambassador for Fudge Professional

WE ARE THE EXPERTS In the wake of the recent news of an Amazon Salon opening in London, Jo Martin’s advice is to take the front foot and learn from Amazon’s actions. 5 positives we can

CLICK HERE TO WATCH THIS VIDEO OR GO TO WWW.RDR.LINK/HB016

take from it It’s been the talk of the industry ever since Amazon announced the opening of their salon so let’s take a minute and see if it could be positive for the industry. It’s totally understandable to be worried about a corporation like Amazon entering hairdressing, the power, reach and investment available to them certainly makes them credible competition. But as with everything there’s more than one way to look at it. Timing-wise, hearing the news about an Amazon salon couldn’t have been much worse. Just as the industry is reopening, salon owners are tackling 12 hour days, client expectations, PPE and team management – the last thing we need to worry about is the Amazon salon. It lit the fuse and we’re rightly infuriated that our beloved industry is being seen as the latest cash cow for a global business entity. But let’s spin this on its head, is there anything we can learn from Amazon? They are without doubt business experts, who will have been researching and investing in this venture for many months. So let’s take advantage of their resources and see what we can learn from what they are doing, what clients are responding to and assessing if there’s anything we can bring in to our own businesses. One thing’s for sure, an Amazon salon is never going to be able to offer that personal experience, the brand’s reputation and perception will always overshadow the experience in salon. In a recent survey the public voted that they would rather go to the hairdressers than the pub – now that’s quite a vote of confidence for our industry, run with it. Clients are so loyal they’d rather see you than have the perfectly mixed cocktail! Change can be worrying but it’s coming and it will continue to come. We’re seeing it in the States already with Amazon’s professional-only site stocking all the big manufacturers professional ranges. There’s every reason to think it won’t be long before it’s here in the UK, so instead of reacting and worrying let’s take the front foot. Take advantage of all the research Amazon put in to these moves, dig deeper, find out what you can and look at the ways to relate it back to your own business. If you are worried that Amazon will affect your retailing, what can you do that they can’t? How can you add value to the retail experience in salon to protect that revenue?

•

•

•

• •

We will always have something that the Amazon salon cannot offer and that’s the personal touch. We are more than just a salon or a hairdresser to so many of our clients. Being able to offer that be-spoke one on one interaction and personal experience is priceless. Our clients come to us because we know them and they know us, we are able to offer that feel good factor which leaves our clients wanting to return again and again. Because we have such a good relationship with our clients and know their hair best we are able to offer products and advice specific to their hair type, style and preference. The client can experience the products in real time and see how their hair feels/reacts the following day. We are able to offer products suitable from wet line through to treatments, brushes and electricals. With many salons recently embracing the world of digital we have the perfect opportunity to increase retail revenue through our very own digital shops. By providing clients with a website that is accessible 24 hours a day to book appointments, shop and browse we can ensure that the client has everything they need in one place, offering not only a professional service but convenience too. We need to remember that we are the experts, we are the ones to offer the experience and expertise that our clients need. We build meaningful and personal relationships with our clients and they can sometimes mean just as much to us as they do to our clients. With clients continuing to visit our salons we can remain positive knowing that people are still supporting small, local businesses. For as long as we can offer that personal, professional salon experience they always will support us.

Embrace the change and learn as much as you can from it. The hairdressing I know and love has nothing to fear and I back us all the way!

Joscelin McCourt CEO of HB Collective (Great Lengths & Rossano Ferretti) urges you to take your digital health and safety seriously.

After a year of COVID-19 chaos, we’ve never been more focussed on our personal and professional health and safety – from strictly-observed social distancing measures and salon PPE to a renewed focus on mental health and managing our work/life balance for enhanced wellbeing. In fact, for many salons, the only area that might not have had a health check recently is their digital footprint – despite the fact that it’s integral to so many areas of running a business and has allowed so many of us to maintain some sense of normality over the last 12 months. Your booking system, client records, stock management, banking, HR, marketing and reputation are all likely to be digitised now and while that’s brilliant for convenience and accessibility, there’s no denying it also leaves us vulnerable. From a disgruntled ex-employee taking over your

Instagram to a hacked website which takes months to regain access to and causes untold damage, we are all at risk online unless we take our digital health and safety seriously. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to keep your business secure online – here are some things you can change today, to be safe in the knowledge that you’re protected. TURN ON TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION Turn two-factor authentication on for every social media account you have. This means that even if someone has your password, they cannot log in without an individual, randomly-generated code which is sent to your email or phone number, or which is managed through a two-factor authentication app on your device (the Google one is safe and free). For most platforms, you can switch on two-factor authentication in your privacy settings.

050_PHR_JUNE21_Layout 1 25/05/2021 14:51 Page 51

BUSINESS

CHOOSE A SECURE PASSWORD... Use the ‘suggest strong password’ option to ensure you have a secure password every time you need one – anything involving your name, business name or the word ‘password’ is an unnecessary risk. Passwords should contain a random and complex selection of punctuation marks, numbers and letters so that they are not easily guessed, and they should also be different for everything. Most phones, apps and browsers will offer you the option to use a randomly-generated secure password, which is infinitely safer. Don’t write passwords down or save them in an obvious location – online password protection services apps like LastPass or Keeper will securely manage multiple logins and allow you to safely share them with relevant team members. Make sure only those who really need them have access to team accounts and passwords. …. AND CHANGE IT OFTEN Change passwords often, and immediately after a member of the team who previously had access has left. It might seem like an unnecessary chore, but it’s a lot quicker and easier than spending months trying to regain access to an account which has been hacked or attempting to retrieve years of lost data. BE DIGITALLY SAVVY Never click suspicious links, be aware of phishing scams via text or email and remember that if it looks or sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Spelling errors, email addresses that don’t look official and out-of-the-blue communication from someone you don’t know or speak to often should be treated with caution. Reputable companies will never ask for your personal details or banking information and if in doubt, call them directly and ask. Also remember that anything you post online is there forever – so be mindful what personal data you share. If it’s not something you’d feel comfortable telling a stranger in the street, question if it’s right to share it online.

STAY SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE Ask permission from clients before you share their image or repost a selfie. It’s a common courtesy, but it will also protect you from copyright infringement. The creator of any image owns the copyright and if you use it for financial gain, which includes social media or marketing, they technically have the right to any revenue created. It’s unlikely, and most people are flattered and happy to share their imagery, but without asking permission first, you aren’t protected if they change their mind. The same applies to reposting imagery that isn’t yours that you’ve found elsewhere online: ask permission and always clearly credit the creator.

“Remember that anything you post online is there forever – so be mindful what personal data you share. If it’s not something you’d feel comfortable telling a stranger in the street, question if it’s right to share it online.”

KEEP YOUR PROTECTION UP-TO-DATE Computer viruses might not seem as common as they were a decade ago, but they still exist and can cause havoc – whether it’s making your software frustratingly slow or more serious issues with scanning for personal data. While most Apple computers and devices have security built in, those using PCs should invest in reputable anti-virus software and keep it up to date. The same applies to phones and other devices – run the updates often to ensure you’re using the most current software, which will also be the best protected. PROTECT YOUR DATA If you store a lot of data on your computer, whether it’s your own or your clients’, it’s worth the effort to back it up securely. Losing data, even a small amount for a brief period of time, isn’t just annoying – it’s a real risk to your business thanks to privacy laws like GDPR. Traditional backups like USB sticks and external hard drives are time-consuming and not entirely secure as they’re still vulnerable to fire, theft or hardware failure. Cloud-based software online is secure, cheap and easy to use – platforms like Google Drive and iDrive start at about £1 a month for paid options. On a day-to-day basis, you can also password protect documents so they aren’t visible to anyone using the computer – ideal if you have a shared computer at your front desk. GET SUPPORT Cyber Resilience Centres have been set up across the UK to protect communities, promote economic growth and improve overall online safety. They are backed by the Police and UK Government and work to support small businesses with all aspects of digital security. They offer free core membership which delivers simple and comprehensible guidance on reducing cyber risks, with regular updates on the latest threats. Plus, if you find yourself in a more serious situation they’ll be able to provide reliable support and solutions.

HOW TO WRITE MARKETING THAT ATTRACTS IDEAL CLIENTS TO YOUR SALON Award-winning salon owner Caroline Sanderson heads up the Salon Jedi Coaching Academy, and is author ‘The Ultimate Business Bible for Ambitious Salon Owners’ available on Amazon. How do you hook your ideal clients and reel them into your business? In marketing, it’s your message that is the hook and line. You need to touch on your clients’ desires. USE DIFFERENT HEADLINES FOR DIFFERENT PLATFORMS: When running a Facebook advert for example, you have to remember that people are scrolling and you need to grab their attention. This is interruption marketing, so whatever you put in your advert has to stand out, the headline being only part of that. You can also include exciting emojis and text to attract attention as long as it fits with your brand messaging, or alternatively imagery or video content. Your advert has to relate to what people are seeing. If you post an advert with a completely unrelated image, people will feel it’s not authentic and they’re more likely to scroll on. On Google however, you may take a different approach to your headline, focusing more on someone’s pain point. If someone is searching on Google, it’s often because they have a pain point and they are looking for a solution. If you can tap into that you’re more likely to attract attention for the right reasons. DON’T FORGET THE CALL TO ACTION: One of the main mistakes I see people making with their marketing is failing to have a call to action. If you’re giving

someone a solution to their problem, or you’re telling someone how you can give them exactly what they’re looking for, you need to make sure that there’s a way for them to access that. You have to make it easy for people to contact you, whether that’s the option to book an appointment online or your number for them to call. THE AIDA MODEL FOR MARKETING: When writing your marketing, use the classic AIDA model as a basis: Attention: you have to grab their attention. Interest: you have to provide them with more information that interests them and keeps them reading. Desire: you want them to have a desire to learn more and use your services. Action: this interest and desire leads them to your call to action. This needs to be very clear and specific.

• • • •

TIPS FOR WRITING YOUR MARKETING MESSAGING: The most important thing to remember with marketing is that each step is designed to get your customers to take the next step. There are some key things to bear in mind: Who you’re writing your message for; that’s your ideal client avatar. Use the rules of AIDA when you’re writing your marketing messages. Your headline is what hooks people. Take time to craft this and get it right.

• • •

A very simplistic example might be ‘Professionally-done hair without the wait.’ You’re taking away the pain of having to spend a long time in salon and you’re giving them what they desire, which is beautiful hair. Other things to consider using in an advert include: Risk reversal; this is where you offer a guarantee. Testimonials or social proof. Positioning; this might include sharing expertise, accreditations or awards.

• ••

THE ‘WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?’ RULE: ‘What’s in it for me?’ is really important to bear in mind when you are writing any marketing message. Your clients are only interested in what’s in it for them. A common mistake I see on many salons websites is that they’re talking about themselves without mentioning the customer and what they can do for them. Your customers want to know what you can do for them, which doesn’t mean you shouldn’t talk about the fact you’ve won awards or that your team are trained in a particular way, it just means you should think about how you can use that positioning while telling your customers how that benefits them. A top tip is to read aloud any piece of marketing material that you write. Pay attention to how many times it says ‘me’, ‘I’, ‘we’, as opposed to ‘you’, ‘your’ etc. That can be a great eye opener and show if you’re not focusing on your customer enough.

Introducing what will be an interesting new series from the inimitable Sean Dawson, General Manager at Adam Reed London.

DAWSON’S CUTS Since this devastating COVID situation has impacted the world and we have all had so much spare time away from our salons, one of the key buzzwords that keeps being spoken about is ‘RESET’! Like you, I have thought long and hard about how I do things and what I would like to change to do them better or be more inclusive and rewarding for others but the key will be, what we are willing to change NOW to make our own and others’ lives better. I truly believe that this is an incredible opportunity for the hairdressing industry to thrive, not just survive and I’m so thrilled to have this column over the next few months to share some of those ideas with you, but… if we are going to change then it has to start with How We See Ourselves! SO LET’S START BY SEEING IF I CAN ADJUST YOUR MINDSET… Over my career the most commonly asked question I get is “How can I become a successful hairdresser?” Well

the obvious answers are – it’s about learning your craft, networking, working hard etc, but mine is always this… How much do you really believe in being a hairdresser?

Now this isn’t my ratings as you will soon find out, but it is a pretty good example as to what the average member of the public would list. I then ask my students “Where do you think the public would place hairdressers LET ME EXPLAIN… within this list?” The answer I most You cannot ask someone else to commonly get is above the Nurse and believe in YOU if you truly don’t believe below the Manager. I then ask them, as in yourself, which sounds obvious but a hairdresser, where would they put what about how much you believe in themselves on that list? Again the being a answer I get is a little hairdresser? I more positive and usually ● Surgeon show this with a just above the Estate ● Doctor/GP really simple Agent and below or the ● MP/Politician exercise on a flip same as the Teacher. ● Dentist chart. I write a list Well this is where I ● Solicitor/Lawyer of career believe I have been ● Policeman professions in successful in my career, ● Teacher order of what I because I would put us ● Estate Agent believe the right at the very top, above ● Manager public perceive the Surgeon! You obviously ● Nurse as most thought I would say that ● Builder important to wouldn’t you because I am ● Shop Assistant them and it writing this… but I can prove ● Cleaner looks a little bit to you why we should be ● Road Sweeper like this: there, so here goes:

054_PHR_JUNE21_Layout 1 25/05/2021 14:54 Page 55

BUSINESS

1

It takes around nine to eleven years to train to become a top surgeon. How long from when we start as an assistant does it take to even become the top stylist in your salon? Probably about the same level of time, training and perfecting your skills and ability. Now think of some of your icons in the industry and think how long they have been tuning their skills.

2

A surgeon and a hairdresser are the only two professionals that a member of the public will let cut a part of their body. Yep that one made you think didn’t it? But it is true, and now really think about the amount of trust each and every client puts in you every time they sit in your chair.

3

The best surgeon should leave the smallest mark or scar when their work is completed, shouldn’t they? I mean if I was to have a tummy tuck, which I probably should have, then if the scar that I was left with was small then how amazing would I perceive that surgeon to be? Now think about us, the best hairdresser should leave the biggest mark once we have finished our work. Think about how many times you have

transformed a client with a haircut or colour. Also remember what we do is on top of the clients head and often cannot be concealed or covered and if we get it wrong it can take weeks and sometimes months to grow out.

4

Statistics say that only 53% of the public will ever need the services of a surgeon during their lifetime, so many will not even meet or need one. They will need your expertise every six to eight weeks, so that means if they lived to 75 years old they would need to see you over 487 times in their lifetime.

5

Finally, for those that are still sceptical about what I have just written, I admit that as a hairdresser if you needed me to, I am not trained or able to save your life... But I can change it considerably for the better every time you visit my salon. I can make you feel better about yourself, increase your self-esteem, your confidence and your well-being. I can get you noticed by your friends and sometimes even strangers when they complement you on your haircut or colour, and I can achieve this for you on an ongoing basis throughout the rest of your life.

Now I hope that I at least made you think because as I said previously if we want to change the perception of what we do, then we have to first change our own thinking before asking others to do the same. Going back to the ‘lockdown’ situation and how long we have had to remain closed during the last year or so…. Really think about how often it was mentioned in the press or on TV about how people couldn’t wait for salons to re-open. Think how desperate your clients were to get booked back in with you and how much they missed looking and feeling great. Now go back and look at that list of professions again and think about where the public would really place hairdressers NOW, in terms of importance to them as a person and in their life, do you think we’ve climbed a lot higher? So that’s a great place to start building from and remember, if you want to be more successful at whatever you do, you must always upgrade your belief system to match your vision.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been incredibly challenging for businesses across Great Britain. As firms begin opening up amid continuing restrictions, many are assessing their financial situation and focusing on how to operate in this difficult new trading environment. In these uncertain times, many businesses are looking for ways to save money and maintain a healthier bottom line. The good news is that getting a smart meter for your business is a small change that could make a big difference. Smart meters are a great way to gain more control and understand how much energy you’re using. Since energy is a key expense that businesses factor into their outgoings, identifying ways to reduce your consumption could help you save money. Smart meters are

Depending on your circumstances, your smart meter could come with an in-home display (IHD), which will enable you to see up to date consumption in pounds and pence, making it easier to visualise how much energy you actually use. In fact, some business owners who have had one

installed said it highlighted areas of spending they weren’t even aware of. This could give you the information you need to help reduce your consumption and therefore save money. On top of that, smart meters can help save you time. They can automatically send meter readings to your supplier,

so you no longer have to. That’s one less thing on your to-do list! Your energy supplier will be ready to fit your smart meter once your eligibility has been confirmed. They will arrange a date and time that is suitable for you and your business requirements. A trained installer will then call round to your premises and fit your smart meter, and after the installation process is complete, they can show you and your staff how it works and answer any questions you might have about it. “I’m worried about staff motivation after so many months in lockdown. How can I keep up morale within my team while still making sure my salon gets back on its feet?” phil says: “Managing your team is going to be one of the biggest challenges after re-opening your salon. Let’s face it, this year is going to be the second worst financial year in business we’ve ever faced (with 2020 being the most disastrous). But your team won’t necessarily be aware of the reality. They’ll see a busy salon and might expect that everything is back to normal. We know that’s not the case. The first six or seven months after re-opening the salon doors is pure catch-up. The Pandemic created a financial crisis in our industry. And while things seem to be moving in a positive direction, we’re not out of the woods yet. My first piece of advice is to keep your team informed about how hard this is going to be. No need to sugar coat it, I’d explain the severity of the situation and how lucky we are to still be in business. Many others haven’t been so fortunate. You may find some of your team are reluctant to be back. I’d go so far as to say that some people have enjoyed some of the upsides of furlough, like more free time. Re-adjusting to a busy salon schedule might seem tough and energy levels could be flagging. As well

as being crystal clear about how precarious the future of the business is, I’d recommend setting the record straight about salary increases. Bottom line, there won’t be any. Your business simply won’t be able to afford it for this year at least. Explain that any cash accumulated in the first busy weeks back will need to stretch out over a number of months. We don’t know yet how clients’ habits will have changed due to lockdown and what impact that will have on your business. For instance, you may have colour clients that will never return and others will stretch out their appointments with a longer gap in between. Cashflow is going to be crucial during this uncertainty. So, knowing that, how do you motivate a team in challenging times? Include them in everything that’s going on and educate them on business. Schedule regular catch ups where you all get together and discuss where you are with everything. No areas off limits. For instance, they may not know that during lockdown you didn’t qualify for furlough and therefore may not have earnt a penny. It’s important to share the reality. Be present and available for staff concerns. Some people will be

struggling to adjust back to a new ‘normal’. Sit in the staff room, eat with them, chat with them, keep up a regular conversation and invite feedback. Praise and support is, of course, important at any time, but now more so than ever. There’s always a reason your team chooses YOU. If you treat them well and make them feel valued, that goodwill should remain, even in tough times. If you see the value in them, they are far more likely to repay the appreciation. And you will need your team to get on board with the critical measures you must also implement to rebuild your business: rigorous stock control and an absolute clampdown on unnecessary wastage. Every penny will count in this next few months. The more your team see that you’re all in it together, the more likely you’ll be able to maintain morale and – as a strong, united team - start to get back on your feet.

LET’S GET SOCIAL Co-founder of the HAIR UNCUT COMMUNITY and founder of SALON EDGE, Phil Collins has been in hairdressing for 25 years. Having trained at Vidal Sassoon prior to working for TONI&GUY he knows the difference between good and great hairdresing. He’s also channelled some of his hairdressing expertise into education and cultivating new product growth. Lately he spends the majority of his time achieving his number one motivation which is working as a coach, helping countless salon owners to improve their business acumen and in turn reaching their goals. With so much uncertainty in the world in this current climate, it’s become essential to keep up strong communicative links through your relevant social media channels. With so many people working from home, people are finding extra time to check out your social media more than ever – whether they are existing clients or potential new ones. TAKE A DEEPER LOOK AT YOUR CURRENT SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS When was the last time that you reviewed your social media? Take time to go through these points and start considering how you would like to improve on your communication. Are you happy with your feeds and how they look? Study your followers and who you are following. Be sure to follow your clients and for them to follow you back. Is it time to consider unfollowing accounts that are a complete waste of time and are not engaging with your brand in any way? Look closely at your hashtags: Think about whether a) You are using the right hashtags b) Are you using enough hashtags? c) Are you researching relevant hashtags to your business? d) Are you changing the hashtags you use as often as you like?

enjoy and your clients love you dearly for it! Your clients have missed you as much as you have missed them, so don’t be afraid to tell them! HAIR TUTORIALS These can be fun and videos are very engaging. It’s important to remember these can be quite raw and where applicable use a little humour. We have all suffered during the pandemic in different ways so bringing a smile to your audience faces can only be a good thing! Always make a plan with social media, think about the kind of content your clients would like to see on your social media platforms. For example: How to wash your hair effectively. How to give yourself the perfect head massage. How to blow-dry your hair effectively (talk about tools and the importance of using a nozzle and sectioning). How to create curls/waves with straightening irons. How to plait your children’s hair.

ENGAGE, ENGAGE, ENGAGE Remember it is essential to keep a close eye on your relevant social channels to check if you have messages, comments or likes etc. Make sure you are responding to them all! DO A LIVE! Don’t be afraid to go live on your Facebook page or IGTV on Instagram. It may seem daunting at first, but your clients want to hear from you as we mentioned earlier! It doesn’t have to just be about hair. Video is very engaging and a fantastic way to get across a message and talk to your audience. Think outside the box for your content, for example why not talk about some funny salon stories or talk about your team. Share a favourite recipe! Tell your audience three things that they may not know about you! Social media has never been so effective, use it wisely but most importantly enjoy it!

SERIOUS SCIENCE Introducing K18 Hair, products that promise to renew hair by way of molecular repair.

Repair treatments can cover up damage and offer temporary relief but they don’t always address the issue at the root of the problem. K18 founder Suveen Sahib committed his life to understanding the biology of hair and with his co-founder wife Britta Cox, decided to not just treat hair damage – he wanted to make hair feel like new again.

After 10 years of biosciences research, the team at K18 landed on one breakthrough peptide: K18Peptide™. This unique sequence unlocks the science that brings strands damaged by chemical services and thermal/mechanical styling back to their original, youthful state. Loved by stylists, press and celebrities alike – it’s even been tweeted about by Khloe Kardashian – K18 is not just a temporary fix, it’s the first product to utilise biomimetics to reconnect keratin chains once broken by bleach, colour and chemical services, resulting in soft, smooth, strong hair with bounce that feels like new. The more damaged the hair the more dramatic the results – and it all happens in just four minutes.

✓ Vegan ✓ Colour safe ✓ Never tested on animals ✗ Parabens ✗ Sulfates ✗ Silicones

The K18 Mist is a lightweight mist that strengthens hair before a chemical treatment. It’s clinically proven to reconform broken disulfide bonds in damaged hair after just one four minute in-salon treatment. The K18 Mask is a progressive treatment that can be used at home or after an in-salon. It’s a lightweight formula that should be applied to clean, towel-dried hair and left for four minutes to repair damage. There is also a leave-in mask for use at home. We look at the new HH SIMONSEN COMPACT DRYER XS

Size doesn’t matter A hairdryer isn’t just a hairdryer. It might have been like that once – a machine that simply blew warm air out to get bone-dry hair in seconds. But bone-dry is neither beautiful nor healthy. Today the story is completely different, and the hairdryer is the first step to beautiful hair.

The new HH Simonsen Compact Dryer XS is small but powerful. It houses a 2000-watt motor in a dryer at just 430 grams – with every detail designed to perfection – from the ergonomic shape to the sound of the dryer. The specially designed ergonomic wings ensure a strong airflow and the ionic bonding technology allows a quick drying time – and a frizz-free and shiny result.

BEAUTY MEETS SCIENCE Ionic Bonding Technology: another aspect that makes the new Compact Dryer XS special is its Ionic Bonding Technology. Whilst drying the hair, the airstream from the hairdryer carries ions that interact with the surface of the hair. In short, negative ions remove charge and positive ions add it – this affects the frizzness or smoothness and shine of the hair. With ionic bonding technology, the ions bind together to form protective ions that lay over the hair as a finely meshed net of ions. When the ions are bonded, they work to neutralise static electricity in the hair and generates an ionic balance that protects the hair and leaves it silky smooth. To say it in hair language: ionic bonding technology makes your hairdryer a technical wonder, that gives smooth, shiny and healthy hair – every time you use it. WWW.RDR.LINK/HB035

A small, but efficient and strong hairdryer that proves size doesn’t matter. Ergonomically designed with functionality and comfort in mind. The XS-dryer has aerodynamic wings and ionic technology for a strong airflow, a frizz-free result and a quick drying time. ✔ Powerful 2000 watt motor ✔ 430 gram ultra lightweight ✔ Ergonomically balanced

KEEP YOUR BUSINESS MOVING Protect your employees and clients with highly effective UV-C disinfection by TUNGSRAM. UV light technology is one of the most effective sanitation tools available today to destroy the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-19 and all other viruses and bacteria. The technology is not new; companies such as the 125-year-old Tungsram Group have an almost century-old history with UV-lighting. Tungsram UV-C Sanitizers are made in the EU offering an affordable and environment-friendly way to sanitise items handled frequently by numerous customers and different members of staff, reducing the risk of cross-contamination in a salon.

SAFE & RELIABLE No known micro-organism is resistant to UV-C light. The disinfectant properties of UV-C technology helps hair salons to provide a clean and safe environment for customers and employees by effectively sanitising products and every-day tools such

FAST & SIMPLE 99.99 % of known pathogens are eliminated in just 5 minutes. Sanitisers are easy to operate, no special training required.

GREEN UV light exists naturally, no harsh chemicals are used and UV lamps are fully recyclable. Confidence in the environment you create and maintain is business critical. Hairdressers reveal their favourite images.

TIFF J For me this shot captures how I was feeling about things in our third lockdown. The model evokes a very pensive, insecure mood but yet there is nothing unstructured about her hair which captures pure strength. This is a shot from my debut photographic collection, taken last March. It also marked a very significant day in that it was the last shoot that super fashion stylist Desiree Lederer ever did – even in its simplicity you can see her eye for the prize.

DESMOND MURRAY I wanted to create a collection of images that were just black and white, minus any grey tones. I did a test to see if that could be achieved with lighting and also taking makeup into consideration. Working with a black model, the makeup artist applied oil all over her skin. We then tried greasepaint, it was amazing and we nailed the lighting too! On the hair front I locked myself away in my studio for a couple of days and came up with a concept that proved to be the foundation of the entire collection.

DANIELE DE ANGELIS It took me almost a year to create this shape. I’m really lucky as I not only manage our academy in London, but I also head the Creative Cutting and Colouring course which means I get to experiment constantly on stage and with my students during workshops. I’m so grateful for my muse and model Peony, who always trusts me and allows me to express my creativity. It’s so important to keep moving forward evolving the shapes and vision; ultimately your taste and ability to ‘create’ will change. You shouldn’t fear mistakes as they are part of the process of an incredible journey. Keep moving, keep creating!

CRAIG CHAPMAN I love this image for so many reasons. Working on the look allowed me to embrace my passion for wig work, as I created the look using a Trendco wig that I redesigned. For me, it’s a look that’s timeless because it’s got a darkness to it but also such beauty. It was actually shot for part of our 2018 BHA Art Team collection, which was our first ever nomination, so it will always be a really special image for me.

CLAYDE BAUMANN This look has been a crowd-pleaser garnering a respectable amount of likes and comments on social media and it is to-date one of my favourite images. Originally featured in my 2019 Collection: Opus – this look showcases a fun and energetic yellow presented in a mixture of wet and dry textures with a silhouette that can only be described as quintessentially D&J Ambrose.

KERRY MATHER I absolutely love this image; I am drawn into the emotion on her face and I think about her life and her journey so far – it’s a beautiful “stand alone” image, and also looks amazing in my full Addiction collection.

Errol Douglas MBE needs no introduction! Pro Hair are delighted to have this ‘man about town’ on our team for 2021. WELL, WELL, WELL... Well, well, well, pardon the pun. No spring chicken I know – but goodness after the rather bleak compulsory respite period enforced by the pandemic – we are now back on our feet – some of us for over nine hours a day – and are we feeling it! Don’t get me wrong – it’s absolutely fantastically incredibly exciting to be back and I’m not knocking it in the slightest, but if we are to continue at this pace – we certainly have to start to understand the needs of our bodies. I am going to dedicate this entire page to YOU. What you eat, how you sleep, how you make the most out of your lifestyle and how you relax your mind and switch off.

REFUEL First steps first – I cite acclaimed nutrition and lifestyle coach Hannah Richards, author of The Best Possible You – a nutritional guide to healing your body (published by Orion Spring £14.99). “The human body is an amazing and resilient system. The food we eat, the way we move and the way we choose to live our lives can all help to keep it in balance and improve our health.” In her book she shows you how to listen to your body, take your health into your own hands and build a relationship with every part of yourself. Refreshingly Hannah comments that “no one knows how to eat”, saying “when all the people who have a voice are destroying the relationship we have with food. Health bloggers and vegan advocates have just swapped one addiction of overeating for another of neurotic eating, they just don’t know it, and TV documentaries often miss the opportunity to educate the public about healthy eating. We shame the fat, we praise the thin, but ultimately neither group is getting the information they need. We need a different

approach, we need to get back to embracing our bodies and the natural way in which they work.” Hannah goes on to talk about nutrition: “Nutrition should not be complicated, which is why at the heart of my advice there are a few simple tips: keep it simple, eat organic, eat seasonal and make your meals from scratch with your own hands. Nourishing your body needs to be a high priority, so start re-evaluating what is important and focus on these things to create a life that you want, because if you do, you can have everything you dream of! Don’t see eating well as cutting out what you love; it’s about supporting your current lifestyle with appropriate measures to improve your current state of health, either physically, chemically or emotionally.” Follow Hannah Richards @thegutclinic

RESET Many of us used the time in lockdown to reset and reassess. People started reaching for their crafts whether it was pottery or paintbrushes – and this in turn taught us how to relax. When we all went back to work on the 12th, here in the UK, we literally put our paintbrushes to the side, promising that we would return on a coveted Sunday – but have we? So important for us all to find the time to switch off – and there is nothing better than by a great walk in the countryside, a brilliant book, even the odd film or two – but so much better for you is to start to create something – something that you don’t do in your day to day – it frees your mind and takes you to magical places. I challenge you!

There are said to be 10 scientific ways to be happy – ■ MEDITATE ■ PLAN A TRIP ■ PRACTICE GRATITUDE ■ HELP OTHERS ■ PRACTICE SMILING ■ SPEND TIME WITH FAMILY ■ MOVE CLOSER TO WORK ■ GO OUTSIDE ■ SLEEP MORE ■ EXERCISE

RESTORE When was the last time you had a really great sleep and woke up completely refreshed? Referring back to Hannah Richards – one of the first things she asks to those who have unsettled nights is if they went to bed hungry? If so, of course the body will wake them up in the middle of the night because it needs feeding! Again it’s all about nurture. How many of you go to bed and just decide to check your emails and social media feed for the final time? I’m guilty of this and before I know it an hour or even two has passed as I have become quite absorbed in something. So this is my advice – leave your phone in another room and don’t look at it until you’ve had your hot water and lemon in the morning and eaten – then look at your phone. My problem has always been because I am a family man – I feel the urge to constantly check in with my family to ensure they are safe and well so always have my phone by my side. If you have a landline – so much the better, you must ask your family members to call you on that if the matter is of any urgency. So back to bedtime. Don’t go to bed after you have nodded off in the armchair – go to bed before you are dead on your feet and go there to relax, read a book – switch off and your sleep will be so much better. It’s not rocket science that we need sleep to help the body remain healthy and stave off illness. Without sleep it’s pretty clear that the brain cannot function properly. I have just finished a book entitled Why we sleep by the magnificent Matthew Walker. In this book Matt Walker explains how sleep can make us healthier, safer, smarter and more productive. Quite clearly he provides amazing strategies to overcome the life threatening risks associated with our sleep deprived society. It’s important that we allocate our bodies and our brains between seven and nine hours of nightly sleep. Let’s do it.

Let’s tick those boxes together! PROFESSIONAL HAIRDRESSER 67
