Purple Reign PANTONE® 17-3938 Very Peri: “Helps us to embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us to a new vision as we rewrite our lives.” And so say all of us, just what we need – this vibrant shade has been created as a reaction to the strange and uncertain times that are hopefully now behind us, reflecting the global mood of the moment as we say goodbye to lockdowns and start enjoying life, work and creativity again. The colour itself is described as “blending the faithfulness and constancy of blue with the energy and excitement of red.” It feels modern and cool – an exciting shade to play with in hair colour, giving you the opportunity to display your colour confidence and it opens up a new colour conversation between you and your clients for 2022. Turn to page 22 to get your Very Peri creative juices flowing. Equally, our Portfolio section this issue is oozing with colour. The four stunningly beautiful collections featured are the embodiment of the creative talent and colour inventiveness we witness in this industry. Colour inspo guaranteed! We also say hello to a new feature this month: LOVE. This is the Pro Hair Edit where we will be sharing things the team are loving right now, some will be new, some may be re-visited like seeing an old friend that you may have forgotten about, but all will be LOVED! Enjoy the issue in all its colourful glory.

FITfor BUSINESS Here, Phil Smith tackles another of your tricky post-Pandemic business issues...

It feels like it’s getting harder to make money from the retail side of my salon. What are your tips for turning products into profits?

PHIL SAYS:

Ah, products. This is a subject close to my heart. When it comes to selling products in your salon, it’s an essential way to boost your bottom line. A healthy turnover percentage should be around 10%, which is going to amount to 10% profit. In some cases that I’ve seen, this can be up to 20 to 30% of your overall profits. Especially in these tough times, selling products effectively can be the key to your survival. It’s time to get smart if you want to protect your retail income.

PURCHASE PRODUCTS YOU BELIEVE IN My first piece of advice is that you MUST stock products you believe in. With so much choice out there, it’s important to be choosy about getting the right products and negotiating the best deals on them. Work out what you think the threshold is that your client will spend and then… Do your research! I’d aim for a mix of up to half a dozen brands. Every different choice is a new opportunity to win your client over. NEGOTIATE THE BEST TERMS When you’ve narrowed down your favourite ranges, target those manufacturers and see what they can do. You’re the customer here and there is plenty of competition, so don’t just take the first deal you’re offered. Once you’ve struck a deal, it’s important to go back annually and re-negotiate - just like you would with a rent review. SHOWCASE PRODUCTS TO THEIR BEST POTENTIAL Make sure your products are clearly labelled and priced, dusted, aligned, facing forwards and immaculately presented in every way. Make sure your

team is acquainted with every product in every range. That way, they can be using them, talking about them and your clients will experience new products at every touchpoint. ‘Try before you buy’ is still the most convincing way to sell anything. INCENTIVISE SALES There are two parts to this – you need to incentivise your clients to buy and also your team to sell. The best way to compete with online sales is to steal some of their strategies. Go hard on your promotions. Consumers have gone mad for ‘three for two’, ‘buy one get one free’ or any chance to get more for their money. Monitor what your main online competition is doing and get your suppliers on board to help you match it. I incentivise my team with 25% of every sale. In my experience, people won’t bother to sell something for nothing. Retail commission is a healthy boost to anyone’s salary and can really start to add up. Give the team knowledge of what you stock and make it worth their while to rave about it. CONTROL YOUR STOCK Holding a vast amount of stock is a false economy. Only have what you can display and make sure you have a deal with your supplier where you can replenish regularly. For slower moving lines, set up longer payment terms so that you have the money in the till before you have to pay out. Also, set up a rigorous stock control system. Every item needs to be accounted for and rung through the till when it’s sold. Remember, retail is all part of a successful salon business. Get it right and you’ll be boosting your cashflow in no time.

business

CLIVE’S client

CONFIDENTIAL Your column is your business

A loyal and regular client base forms the foundation of any successful salon business. Clive Collins, one of the founding directors of award-winning HOB Salons, offers his take on client retention.

USE YOUR SOFTWARE SYSTEM When talking to other salon owners, it has become obvious to me that many of them don’t fully exploit the information they have at their fingertips. A decent salon software system should offer all the functions a salon owner needs to assess their client retention rate so that they can take action when needed. Don’t just use your computer system as a glorified till; it is a major asset to your business if used properly.

KNOW YOUR RETENTION RATE

At HOB Salons we use our software system to keep track of how each stylist and colourist is performing, so we know who is keeping and who is losing their clients. When you know the statistics, you can address any issues that may be causing the problem. Is a stylist failing to rebook clients before they leave the salon, for example? Or could there be an issue with the way a stylist is communicating with their clients? Often, rectifying such problems will simply come down to offering the team member some extra training. On average, a successful salon should be looking to retain between 65-70% of all clients, and a minimum of 50% of all new clients. If your statistics show you are falling below these rates of retention, it’s time to take action.

GETTING CLIENTS BACK

All salons will lose some clients along the way, but don’t sit back and accept it. There are steps you can take to win at least some of them back. Sometimes the old-fashioned way is best, and twice yearly, in December and June, we send out letters to non-returning clients offering 50% off all hairdressing services on Sundays to Thursdays. This is a great way of filling columns in January and July, plus we are able to see which stylists/colourists are not getting clients back into their chairs and address any issues that may relate directly to that team member. We telephone all new clients following their first appointment to discuss their experience at HOB Salons. This way, if they had any issues we are able to address them and welcome them back to the salon to rectify anything that they weren’t totally happy with. It also demonstrates to the client that we care about them and value their custom. It shows that we want to form a genuine relationship with them, and that they are not just a name in our database. This is how loyal clients are won. We also send out a text message a few days before a client’s appointment as a reminder. This is an effective way of avoiding no-shows and, again, maintains communication.

ATTRACTING NEW CLIENTS An effective method of attracting new clients is to offer discounts to local businesses and certain organisations. At HOB Salons, we have formed relationships with those working in the NHS, the police force, armed forces and students, as well as local businesses, offering a 20% discount. It’s a great way to give back and build a regular and loyal clientele.

CARE FOR CURRENT CLIENTS Always remember your existing, loyal clients are your priority. Don’t neglect them in favour of attracting new clients. Ensure they always receive a five-star service every visit. Loyalty deserves recognition and clients will pick up on the fact that you are paying more attention and offering more incentives to new clients than them.

TIPS ONE Don’t be afraid to talk to your clients about making future appointments. With the uncertainty going on they won’t want to miss out.

TWO Out of sight, out of mind, so don’t hesitate to drop them regular emails, texts and messages

THREE Introduce a loyalty card scheme – we have a series of VIP cards designed to offer clients great value for money with additional services and discounts.

THE master BUILDER Colin McAndrew is the Managing Director of Medusa, one of Scotland’s fastest growing salon groups. Why is it important to build a community with your local business? Colin’s Four Top Tips Every salon operating knows that doing good hair is the least a client expects when they visit your brand. Today when a consumer chooses to spend their money and time they are looking for more than just a great product. This is true for every business on the high street. Whether you’re a book shop, florist, gift store, opticians or newsagents - we all have to offer our customers more than ever before. Today the consumer will invest their money when there is a connection. A genuine, heartfelt connection builds lasting relationships.

1. 2. 3. 4. INCREASES TURNOVER Of course this is a crucial part of running any business. Having the genuine support of local businesses that understand and share your ethos will ultimately help your bottom line. These connections will instinctively recommend your business to their clients, increasing visibility of your brand. If a consumer supports a local business and that business shares their experience of your brand, the consumer is likely to visit you also.

LEARN FROM DIFFERENT INDUSTRIES Creating a community with other business owners can offer a fresh perspective on challenges. Recruitment, tax, insurance, pandemics and career development are just some of the issues that effect all businesses. Starting a conversation with your business neighbours can offer fresh insight to how other industries operate, as well as offering strength in numbers to deal with any local issues.

CREATE MORE JOY Parties need more than one person in order to be fun. Building a relationship with other businesses will guarantee that more clients, team members and others business want to get involved.

BE AUTHENTIC Research shows that consumers have lost faith in brands over the last few years and are seeking brands with authenticity and purpose. They want to make the world better, and they’ll give their trust and brand loyalty to companies that help them do it. While you are building your brand community ensure that it is with others that align with your purpose and ethos. It helps build consumer trust, and when consumers fully trust a brand, they stay loyal. Why not make it your goal in 2022 to reach out and start building relationships with your local businesses?

INVEST in your

SALON TRAINING

Get an insight into how Karen Thomson of KAM Hair & Body Spa invests in training her team. A big issue in the industry at present is getting apprentices trained. A lot of hairdressers are becoming self-employed or renting a chair and apprentices are no longer staying with salons after they qualify, as they feel they may not have as good a career path. We’re also noticing less school leavers looking to become salon apprentices. One of the main reasons for this is that they are unaware of the career options and opportunities available to them in the hairdressing industry. At KAM we continually invest in training to allow our apprentices and our team to be able to constantly progress. This helps to retain our apprentices and stylists, as it shows our commitment to them and their development and keeps them motivated at work. When investing in training for your team you should look at all outlets available to you – how you can train the team online, in salon, through looking at training with outside vendors and training with product brands. A mix of all of these training methods will help develop your team’s skills and knowledge, keep them passionate and their morale high. What profit the team make in retail sales, we invest back into training. This allows us to always be able to provide consistent training and shows the team how much we value them. We always have regular one-to-ones with our team to talk to them individually about their career goals, what their plans are and what they want to achieve. By doing this we

can get an insight into the types of training they would like and how they would like to develop their skills to allow us to help them achieve their goals. Apprentices love to hear that the salon they have chosen to work with has opportunities available for them to progress. Through our recruitment campaigns, we always shout about the benefits we offer our team, including training, career progression and offering our apprentices and team the opportunity to get involved with events outside of the salon within the industry and local community along with working on photo-shoots. At KAM we also hold competitions with our apprentices. This includes in-house competitions on doll heads, where our apprentices have to create mood boards and carry out the look on a doll head to present to the team and an out of salon judge. These competitions help our apprentices to perfect their skills and boost their morale, working to the best of their ability to win the competitions. Now more than ever we need to shout about what we offer to apprentices and attract them to come and work at the salon. There are so many great opportunities within the industry and many apprentices aren’t aware of this. Investing in training is of upmost importance and through doing this, we can make our salons more successful by retaining a happy team that want to strive to be their best and that do not want to go self-employed but instead, want to stay and grow with the company.

THE mindful

HAIRDRESSER For the second part of his new series, Sam Burnett of HARE & BONE discusses his mindful approach to your personal career.

When I started my career, I was eager to learn everything, to experience it all. I put my heart and soul into every opportunity that I sourced. I loved every moment, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Now, 24 years on I can appreciate all that I learned, and how that has shaped me and my career today. I can also look back with perspective and see what I could have done better to create a balance between my professional and personal life. I’ve worked hard on figuring out my core beliefs and make sure that these reflect everything myself, my career and business undertake. There are numerous books available to help you work out what your beliefs are but a good way to start is by journaling. Writing down thoughts and following them to the end of the thought will help define what is important to you. My core beliefs are authenticity, creativity, kindness and sharing. Now when an opportunity comes my way, I check it sits within these beliefs. Once you have figured out your beliefs, they will help you work out what your purpose is. Beliefs + passionate = purpose. I believe my purpose is mentoring others in our industry. This includes my salon team, the work I do with the Fellowship’s Project X team and is open to anyone that would like my support. Your purpose is not one single, static role. It will shift and reshape as you continue to grow. I wouldn’t change a thing about my career path to date. I believe in learning not regretting and I am fortunate for all I have experienced. I would tell my younger self though to value myself more and not to be scared to say no. As creatives we often say yes because we are passionate and driven. My advice to both the new generation of hairdressers and those established is to figure out the parts that bring joy and focus on these. People talk of a work/life balance but when you find your purpose in your career the balance is already there. You don’t need to chase everything, all the time. Recognise what makes you feel good about yourself, and the rest will follow. Some recommendations: If you have five minutes to be mindful this week, then: Read: Good Vibes Good Life by Vex King Listen: On Purpose with Jay Shetty To read Sam’s article in full go to www.professionalhairdresser.co.uk

ith Very Peri, a brand new colour, being announced as the Pantone Colour of the Year for 2022 we were curious as to how this exciting shade would be received by the hair world and how it would be translated into salon looks. We spoke to some of our industry

DEBBIE INNES, MEDUSA

“Pantone, as we know, is the global leading authority in colour predictions and whilst some may question the relevance of the Pantones within the hairdressing industry, I strongly believe that when identifying what clients are seeing when they scroll online and social media for hair colour inspiration, you simply cannot ignore the domination of the Pantone Colours– they are hugely influential,” says Andrew Smith, Global Artistic Ambassador for Milkshake. “Although very unpredicted, Very Peri, is inspired by the transformative times that we are living through and represents the trials, tribulations and changes that we encountered through the global pandemic which has completely changed the world in so many ways,” says Safy B. The colour itself is a mix of emotional tones, each of which displays empathy to the world that surrounds us. The blue tones represents the sad and emotional feelings, whist the violet and red undertones represents a joyous attitude and courageous outlook.”

Biolage colour-deposting conditioners come in seven shades that will enhance, refresh, and transform colour-treated or naturally-coloured hair. The intermixable shades boast an extra-nourishing vegan formula. www.rdr.link/HH013

British Colourist of the Year Siobhan Haug, TONI&GUY comments, “Blue with a red undertone – what a combination! Blues can be tricky for everyone to relate to due to the cool make up of the colour. For example, if you’re someone who loves warmth, golden jewellery and earthy tones you might struggle to connect and love a blue shade. But by incorporating an element of warmth, like with the shade Very Peri, suddenly the spectrum of who this tone will work on is endless!” HOB Academy’s Warren Boodaghian adds, “Very Peri is the perfect combination of calm and passion. These are words we will see throughout fashion and lifestyle movements moving into 2022. Very Peri gets its calming undertone from the blue hue and the passion from the accents of red. It’s a truly commercial colour that can be added into our everyday salon conversations with our clients.”

Colour Formula by Andrew Smith milk_shake whipped cream in violet applied from root to tip then whipped cream in light blue applied from root to tip over the top section. No development time – simply blowdried into the hair.

“Very Peri is a gorgeous new trend which I am so excited about. Depending on the client, their skin tone and lifestyle, this can be bespoke to them – ensuring they have a manageable colour that works for them and looks fabulous at all times. By balancing the violet red tone and the blue tone correctly, it is a true recipe for success,” says Andrew Smith. “From Pantone to fashion to hair, I can’t wait to adapt this trend in my own way and show how you can push this creatively or commercially with your guests,” says Artistic Director of Brooks & Brooks, Marlon Hawkins. “To get the look on the hair. I layered up different tones to really get that parmaviolet-meets-Very Peri feel on a clean, global canvas to bring to life this cool and warm mix of soft blues and reds. I love the L’Oréal Professionnel DiaLight range and Glow range which are perfect for creating beautiful varnishes over different canvasses that can be made stronger and last longer or softer for a hint of the desired shade.”

Blushes Collective’s Head of Colour Education, Sam Philbrick has some suggestions, “There are so many on-trend, yet individual ways to use this on the hair – from front panels to a hidden streak or even livening up globally blonde hair with the much-seen mini dip dye, colouring the last inch of blonde hair.” Matrix Artist Christian Wiles agrees, “Veri Peri could be applied as a pastel tone over pre-lightened hair, or for less of a commitment, it could be used as colour placement creating focal points throughout the hair.” KAM HAIR & BODY SPA

KEEP IT FRESH VERI PERI is certainly going to need some maintenance what do you suggest? INDOLA

RAINBOW ROOM INTERNATIONAL

“We’re loving this beautiful colour in the salon right now and have already had a couple of clients in to have it done. It’s definitely best suited to clients who are already blonde and prefer cooler colours. They are already used to maintaining toners and the upkeep required to keep the colour brighter for longer,” says Paul Paterson, Medusa Partner.

“IT’S DEFINITELY BEST SUITED TO CLIENTS WHO ARE ALREADY USED TO MAINTENANCE.” “To maintain the vibrancy of the colour, I would recommend something like Schwarzkopf Professional Chroma ID and I would make up a bespoke tone and colour system for clients to use at home between appointments,” adds Tim Scott-Wright. Suzie McGill, International Artistic Director, Rainbow International also suggests, “With these cool pastel tones I also always recommend clients to use a serum or hair oil on damp hair before heated styling and also on dry hair to give the colour extra luminosity. Heated styling sprays are also a must to use before styling to avoid the colour fading quickly and protect it as much as possible during the heated styling process.”

For a bold pop of purple colour, Indola Color Blaster Lark instantly provides colour refresh or enhancement of violet tones, with each application lasting up to 20 washes. www.rdr.link/HH018

Introducing Tea Tree Hemp, a new collection of vegan, multitasking essentials.

John Paul Mitchell Systems® has unveiled a nourishing new Tea Tree Hemp collection that creates a retreat for the senses and restores hair and skin. Inspired by the meditative practice of forest bathing, Tea Tree Hemp delivers an earthy, mind balancing aromatherapy experience. Harnessing the highly restorative power of hemp in three ways, there are four new products in the range.

HARNESS THE POWER OF HEMP

TEA TREE HEMP RESTORING SHAMPOO AND BODY WASH 2-in-1 Cleanser Creamy hemp-based lather gently cleanses hair and skin. Hydrating hemp extract soothes and moisturises from head to toe. Subtle, refreshing tingle.

TEA TREE HEMP RESTORING CONDITIONER AND BODY LOTION 2-in-1 Hydration Multi-tasking conditioner helps restore hair and skin in one simple step. Nourishing hemp seed oil and hemp extract hydrate from head to toe.

TEA TREE HEMP MULTITASKING SPRAY All-in-one Style Prep Do-it-all spray hydrates and detangles, while adding soft style memory. Hemp seed oil and hemp extract nourish strands, manage frizz and add shine.

TEA TREE HEMP REPLENISHING HAIR AND BODY OIL 2-in-1 Moisture Balance Gives hair and skin a replenishing boost of hydration. Nutrient-rich hemp seed oil soothes, softens and adds shine.

WHAT’S INSIDE

HEMP SEED OIL High in nourishing essential fatty acids, including Omega-3 and Omega-6, to hydrate and protect skin and hair. UPCYCLED HEMP EXTRACTS A valuable, protein-rich resource that helps restore hair and skin. While hemp is often harvested only for its oil, Tea Tree uses upcycled hemp extract that’s made from leftover seeds, making it a sustainable ingredient solution. HEMP BASED CLEANSING INGREDIENT An alternative to sulfate-based surfactants, it uses the seeds from the hemp plant to create a creamy lather.

SUPERNATURAL STRENGTH

Working its magic on strands from the inside out, Oribe’s new Hair Alchemy Collection.

An antidote for the woes of weak hair – preventative care in the shape of trio of nourishing products that provide a regimen formulated to prevent hair breakage and strengthen it from the inside. Used together, Oribe’s Hair Alchemy Resilience Shampoo, Conditioner and Fortifying Treatment Serum produce nearly instant fortification: After five uses, the collection was clinically proven to make hair 2.9x more elastic and 133% stronger.* The Hair Alchemy Collection borrows from nature’s apothecary, blending ancient superfoods and phyto-technology to renew strands. The nourishing formulas contain a curative blend of chia seed (named after the Mayan word for strength), plant-based protein and bio-fermented bamboo leaf, along with a moisture-charged hyaluronic acid complex. Together, these ingredients transform weak, brittle hair into strong, resilient, healthier-looking locks by improving tensile strength and increasing elasticity while reducing hair loss caused by breakage, allowing it to grow longer. *Based on a clinical test of Hair Alchemy Resilience Shampoo, Conditioner and Fortifying Treatment Serum when used as a system vs. non-conditioning shampoo.

All Hair Alchemy products are recyclable. The products’ paper-based outer cartons are also recyclable, made from materials certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Dermatologist tested | Formulated without sulfates (SLS & SLES) | Colour and keratin treatment safe | UV protection | Vegan* | Gluten-free* | Proudly approved by PETA.

HAIR ALCHEMY RESILIENCE SHAMPOO Strengthen fragile, weak hair with this protective and ultra-nourishing cleanser. A floral blend of daisy and honeysuckle extracts helps to lengthen locks by strengthening hair from the root and fortifying brittle ends.

HAIR ALCHEMY RESILIENCE CONDITIONER Give hair a dose of strength, softness and vitality with this indulgently conditioning hair therapy. A multi-action hyaluronic acid complex rehydrates from within to deliver a surge of moisture and improve elasticity. The result: smooth, strong, ultra-resilient hair.

HAIR ALCHEMY FORTIFYING TREATMENT SERUM This treatment elixir helps to shield and fortify fragile strands. The sheer, fast-absorbing serum creates a protective veil around each hair fibre to improve tensile strength and elasticity while preventing breakage by strengthening from within to encourage length.

How did you decide on the style of your salon interior? We are on the same wavelength and have a natural way of working together, so it wasn’t difficult to agree on the salon interior. We both wanted to create a luxe, calm, inviting but functional salon space with a natural flow. Where did you find the inspiration for your design? We were inspired by places we have visited – five-star hotels, local bars and Ibiza spas – the aim was to ensure the salon would appeal to a diverse clientele. Did you use an interior designer? No, did it all ourselves! And it wasn’t just the interior - the salon was built from scratch to our specifications thanks to our amazing landlord who listened to our ideas and gave us the go ahead, so we had full creative control over the whole build.

VISIT STEP INSIDE NOVEMBER COLLECTIVE

November Collective is a state-of-the-art hair and beauty destination that opened in August 2021 in buzzy Livingston, a short distance from Edinburgh. The brainchild of founders Christopher Laird and Emma-Louise Cantwell, the space has been built from scratch to the duo’s specifications and spans an impressive 150 square metres over two floors.

Describe the vibe created by your interior The salon boasts a neutral, unisex interior, designed to be gimmick-free and to provide a ‘blank canvas’ in which to work. Luxurious materials – think oak floor, taupe leather chairs and green velvet beauty stools – creating a feeling of calm and are accented with lush botanicals and cleverly created ‘zones’, each with their own scent. What do you hope is your clients’ first impression when they walk in? The client has always been at the forefront of the salon and its interior. We hate the idea that a customer might feel that they don’t belong in your salon, so

064_PHR_FEB22_Layout 1 21/01/2022 14:39 Page 65

salon profile

we’ve worked hard to create somewhere that’s inclusive and honest. We offer a bespoke service to a diverse clientele, and hope the salon provides a sensory experience from the moment they walk through the door, that adjusts to each client’s individual needs What are the key elements of your salon design? Probably that it doesn’t look like a salon – we really wanted to avoid a traditional salon layout and vibe. For example, we didn’t want colour clients having to sit in the same position while their colour develops, so we added in different zones so the client can move around during their appointment – there’s nothing more intimidating than staring back at yourself in the mirror for 45 minutes! The lighting in particular has been given careful consideration; Emma-Louise worked closely with the

electricians to ensure it would create the right ambience, without throwing off the accuracy of hair colours. The salon also features a communal workspace upstairs, which clients can use to work while they wait. Lockdown has changed the way we live and work and shown us that clients want a versatile salon experience. We wanted to create a space that allows the customer to take their time; they can come in and use all the communal areas – including hair stations – to make calls, have a cocktail or send emails. The calming atmosphere allows clients to relax and use the space to their full advantage. Whether they want to read a book, catch up on some work or simply take in the breathtaking scenery, they’re very welcome to make full use of our facilities. Do you have any curated pieces or special features/areas in the salon? The salon is glass fronted over two floors, so it’s flooded with natural light, with the 32 Crittall-style windows acting as ‘picture frames’ to the views outside. The main section looks out on the Murieston Water and stunning

woodland which changes beautifully through the seasons. How have you embraced sustainability within the design? Being as sustainable as possible when building the salon was so important to us. We tried to re-use material where possible – for example, the scaffolding boards the builders used during the build were re-purposed into shelves for the salon. We also sourced re-purposed wood for the panelling, which is used throughout the salon. Our towels are all biodegradable, and we recycle the hair. The salon has its own air purifier which also heats the interior too. What salon software do you use and what feature of it do you find most useful? Phorest – we love it as it’s so multifunctional and looks after so many aspects of our business – from appointments to marketing, stock, staff and so much more. It’s also very client friendly, which is a bonus! Did your product brand/colour house influence your style of interior design? This wasn’t the intention at the beginning, but the brands we have

partnered with are a brilliant fit for not only the salon interior, but also the November Collective ethos of inclusivity, sustainability and honesty. What salon furniture have you chosen and why? We spent a lot of time picking bespoke pieces for the salon furniture – our criteria was that the furniture was beautiful, functional, and, most importantly, had the client in mind. We deliberately stayed away from the traditional black salon furniture – instead hand-picking neutral pieces in sustainable materials and luxe fabric to

compliment the beautiful salon interior. Do you have dress code/uniform for your team? We don’t have a uniform, but we do have a dress code which is ‘bring your personality to work’. We are big believers in power dressing and encourage our staff to feel empowered through their clothes! Putting on an amazing outfit in the morning is an instant confidence boost for so many people and it can also have a strong and positive impact on other people, including clients.

hairdressers at home What they’re watching, reading and doing. For February we talk to Mr Angelo Seminara… Angelo Seminara is widely regarded as one of the most inspirational hairdresser of his generation. Challenging the norm, Angelo is obsessed with achieving the seemingly unachievable – his extraordinary work and creativity take us to a brand new world where he crafts hair to create curious new shapes, textures and colours. The creative visionary and Goldwell Global Ambassador has recently opened his first flagship salon in London’s Knightsbridge.

best sound Hip Hop I like all kinds of hip hop and rap; I find it captivating. I enjoy listening to it because it brings a strong energy. I like nineties rap like Tupac. Also, at the moment I’m enjoying my son Calabria on itunes who does a very good rap.

best book The Complete Paintings and Drawings of Leonardo De Vinci There are many books to read, but I love photographic books. I find them very inspiring and it allows me to get to know many photographers, artists and other subjects in my life. One of my favourites is The Complete Paintings and Drawings of Leonardo De Vinci. Every time I look at this book, I am fascinated. I prefer visual books and this is one of the most beautiful.

best artist Leonardo De Vinci He started everything from drawings. He was an inventor, a scientist, an engineer, an architect, and an artist. To me, he was a true genius because his work still influences people today. He created one of the world’s best paintings, the Mona Lisa in the Louvre.

best film Avatar It’s super innovative as a generic way of making a film. Avatar turned digital movies upside down and blew my mind. It captured my attention and I was plugged in from start to finish.

best podcast Ted Talks Daily This podcast really gets me thinking. It’s good to learn something new about the world every day, and I like the short snippets because they fit into a busy schedule. I recently listened to one about sustainable housing which was super interesting: Vishaan Chakrabarti – A vision of sustainable housing for all of humanity.
