Season’s greetings As we head towards ‘heating season’ plumbers and heating engineers will be bracing themselves for the usual busy autumn period. As heating systems are turned on after the summer, engineers can once again expect calls to investigate faults and find ways to help heating systems keep delivering. However, with the cost of living crisis and very high energy bills showing little sign of abating, many people may start looking for ways to cut costs in the longer term – if, of course, they have the money available for an initial investment. Those with older boilers with poor efficiency ratings may see this as the right time for an upgrade to the latest models, which deliver not only higher levels of efficiency, but also greater levels of control and enhanced reliability. Plus, with many new boilers now ‘hydrogen-ready’ consumers can be reassured that a new appliance is fit-for-purpose if the gas blend is altered in the future. And, with Sustainability and Net-Zero remaining strong drivers for government, businesses and many consumers, some may look more closely at the low-carbon heating options available. As many in the industry will know, earlier this year the government introduced the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, a grant of around £5,000 to help draw consumers towards considering Heat Pumps. However, one of the impediments to more Heat Pump installations is the number of engineers qualified to design and install these systems. A new report from Baxi, ‘Heating Installers: Taking the Leap to a Low Carbon Future’, reveals that around 30% of installers are ‘extremely unlikely’ to fit heat pumps. Not that reassuring for those in Whitehall who want to see the sector installing around 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028. However, the report also finds that 28% are ‘somewhat likely’ or ‘extremely likely’ to start fitting heat pumps in the next three years – so there are also signs that installers are beginning to take note of the shift towards low-carbon systems. The report talks of a ‘finely balanced tipping point’ for this issue. (You can read more about the report on page 6) With installers facing what is, arguably, the busiest time of the year, taking time-off now to attend training courses may be too challenging. But, if consumer interest in low-carbon options grows, gaining more knowledge about the variety of emerging solutions available may well stand engineers in a good position for the future.

WORCESTER BOSCH REVEALS ENVIRONMENT 2050 COMPETITION WINNER HEATING INSTALLERS SPLIT ON HEAT PUMPS, FINDS BAXI REPORT The transition to low carbon heating is at finely balanced tipping point with installers split on whether they will be installing heat pumps in their customers’ homes – that’s the main finding of a new report from Baxi. The company’s research with installers found that nearly a third are prepared to embrace heat pumps in the near future. By contrast, around 30% say they are extremely unlikely to install heat pumps. Other findings in the report ‘Heating Installers: Taking the Leap to a Low Carbon Future’ are that the government and the industry will need to address the important issue of training costs, ensuring there is enough demand from customers and reducing paperwork. Karen Boswell, Managing Director of Baxi UK & Ireland, said: “Installers will play an important role as we decarbonise the nation’s heating and it will be vital that the government and industry support them with the right information, incentives and training.” For more information please www.rdr.link/pai001
Worcester Bosch has announced that its first Environment 2050 competition winner (in the gas category) is PT Plumbing & Heating Ltd.’s Paul Thirlwall. The aim of the Environment 2050 competition is to recognise those professionals in the heating industry who act sustainably and make informed choices when it comes to upgrading or creating a new installation of heating appliances. Paul said: “Living and working sustainably, to me, is crucial. The future of the industry and the wider world depends on sustainability being prioritised. You only have to look around to see the impact non-renewable fuels have made to the planet. The industry is progressing towards greener innovations and renewable fuel sources and that will play a huge part in reaching net zero.”
DAIKIN SUSTAINABLE HOME CENTRE OPENS IN BRISTOL A new air source heat pump showroom has opened in Bristol to provide people across the South West with information and training on sustainable home heating solutions. The Daikin Sustainable Home Centre has been launched by PHC Renewables. It houses a heat pump training centre and will also be used by homeowners who can familiarise themselves with air source heat pump technology, and to sit down with an expert to discuss the best solution for heating and cooling their home.

SPECIAL REPORT
Work/ life balance PHPI talks to James Chillman, UK Country Manager of Fergus, the job management software, which has launched in the UK and aims to give plumbers a better work/life balance.
Q
Where did the idea of Fergus come from?
Fergus was created by Dan Pollard, an experienced plumber from New Zealand who has run his own business for decades. He became increasingly frustrated by the difficulty he had keeping up with admin. Often he found himself snowed under and his work life balance suffered. Using his own experiences, he sought to develop a system which saved time, streamlined admin and helped people get paid. In short, he wanted to help tradespeople to recapture their quality of life and spend more time doing the things they actually enjoyed. The result was Fergus, named after his trusty best friend, Fergus, his dog. Since then, the business has grown and after significant investment, we are now in eight countries serving over 18,000 trade companies and counting.
Q
What problems does it solve?
Despite the digital revolution being over 30 years old, more than 75% of tradespeople still use manual systems and processes to manage their business. Many still use paper-based systems. This is inefficient and can lead to a poor work life balance. It hampers cash flow, lowers profits, can be confusing and causes significant stress for the business owner. Fergus streamlines and connects all the different aspects of a business. From initial quoting, through managing jobs, materials and contractors, to invoicing and chasing late payment, Fergus helps business owners keep track of all areas of their business by making processes more efficient – and in doing so it removes stress and financial hardship.
Q
How long does it take to learn to use?
It doesn’t take long, and our customers can vouch for this. If you can spare an hour for a demo and initial walk through you will find it is super simple – it will save you hours and hours of admin time.

you can create quotes on the spot, send out invoices or chase late payment with automated SMS messaging.
Q
What are its main features?
It’s packed with features to keep on top of a job from start to finish. For instance, you can create quotes on the spot, send out invoices or chase late payment with automated SMS messaging. The visual calendar gives a complete overview of what jobs are booked, the dates they’re booked for, and their progression. If you have a team, they can be assigned to a job in seconds by just dragging and dropping their name on it. They’ll automatically receive notification via our App, so there’s no need to phone or meet with them. You can see where your teams are, where they’ve been, how long they’ve been on a job, and whether they’ll make the next one on time. Bigger jobs can be broken down into milestones, which makes managing costs
008_PHPI_SEPT22_Layout 1 04/08/2022 14:59 Page 9
and progress easier. Changes can be instantly made to a job. The cost and purchase of all materials can be logged, templated gas and electricity certificates can be filled in, while hazards and on-site incidents can be logged, and sign offs recorded. The App summarizes each job, too. So, if it’s going over budget or taking longer than expected, it’s easy to see why and fix it.
Q
Can it help your business to grow?
Neil Sawers, Commercial Technical Manager at Grant UK examines the take up of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme When the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) replaced the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) Scheme earlier this year, many wondered whether the BUS’s single up-front grant would be more or less popular than the quarterly payments paid over seven years through the RHI. The initial
By helping your business to run smoothly and efficiently, the software reduces stress and the likelihood of burnout. By streamlining admin, revenue is optimised. More time can be spent attracting new clients and doing paid work. With invoicing and chasing late payments made easy, balance sheets are healthier too.
Q
in association with
How does it help to juggle the work/ life balance?
All aspects of the business are controllable within the easy-to-use, and visually attractive, status board. And they all work seamlessly together so, for example, quoting and invoicing is made simple and pain free. By uploading price books, material costs will appear in quotes automatically, and can be adjusted by creating tiered mark-ups for different clients or job types. Mark-ups can be added to materials for smaller jobs, or discounts can be offered where beneficial, such as for repeat customers. Fergus takes the pain and stress out of admin. So, more time can be dedicated to actually getting work done and earning money, and spending time with family and friends.
Q
INDUSTRY INSIGHT
How much does it cost?
BUS statistics suggest that uptake is slow. Although the BUS officially launched on 1st April 2022, the scheme did not open for applications until 23rd May, a lag needed to allow installers to set up their accounts. OFGEM have published that between 23rd May – 30th June, 857 BUS vouchers were issued (totaling £4,294,000) and 169 vouchers were redeemed (totaling £801,000), figures which suggest there is currently a relatively low appetite for the support
We have a Free plan which is a simplified version of the software, with no commitment. offered through the BUS. Speaking to installers, they have mixed feelings towards the BUS. For those who have been MCS registered for many years and who installed through the RHI, adapting to the BUS has not been too troublesome. However, for others, the prospect of attaining MCS accreditation combined with the increased paperwork involved in the BUS application process is proving too much hassle. Interestingly, consumer awareness of the BUS is significantly higher than it was for the RHI with more homeowners knowing about the £5,000 grant that is available if they swap from a fossil fuel boiler to an air source heat pump. This aligns with the growing trend of consumers equipping themselves with more knowledge about their prospective new heating system compared to a few years ago when an end-user would often make their decision based solely on their installer’s advice. Time will tell if this increased awareness converts into higher volumes of vouchers being redeemed through the BUS. For installers interested in becoming MCS certified for Heat Pump Design and Installation, Grant UK’s Training Academy is running both the LCL Awards Level 3 courses. HEAT PUMPS
TIME TO GET ON BOARD?
Griff Thomas, Managing Director of renewables training centre GTEC, discusses some of the challenges facing the heat pump sector as deployment ramps up, progress so far and opportunities for heating installers.
T
he government has pledged to deliver 600,000 heat pumps every year by 2028 as part of wider plans to tackle decarbonisation in domestic dwellings, representing an almost 12-fold increase on 2021 numbers. A rapid transition is needed, but how can it be achieved on such a large scale and in a short timeframe? First, let’s consider the challenges: ● The belief that heat pumps are unsuitable for older housing stock – So far, evidence from the Electrification of Heat demonstration project suggests the opposite. ● Social barriers – Renewable technologies have always been based on the idea that they must pay for themselves, but we must move away from this thinking. ● Loss of airing cupboard – A very common barrier in my experience that accounts for a 40% drop off in enquiries. Manufacturers are rising to this challenge and innovating to store cylinders in loft spaces. ● Purchase costs – Why is it more expensive to buy a heat pump? It’s all about limited production runs and recovery of R&D, but it won’t be like this forever. As demand increases and the supply chain stabilises, the price will come down. ● Running costs – Wildly fluctuating electricity and gas prices are putting a spanner in the works here but let’s take a heat pump unit running badly at SCOP 3 and an electricity price of 30p p/kWH, every unit of thermal energy costs around 10p, compared to gas at approximately 7p – a difference that will need to be subsidised.
manufacturers will be penalised if they do not achieve a certain percentage of heat pumps sales in proportion to fossil fuel boiler sales. This is a brave step by central government and something we’ve not seen before. ● Regulation – The 2021 update to Part L of the Building Regulations is another ‘first’ – low temperature heating is now required by law in new builds and full replacement systems, with standards set to be lifted even higher in 2025 under the Future Homes Standard.
we need a strong installer base at the top of its game to deliver quality installations that last the test of time. What’s being done?
● Connectivity – smart capabilities will
allow better use of electricity from the grid and enable end users to make use of reduced rate tariffs. Central government is ploughing millions into R&D to ensure this high level of connectivity can happen and running costs are reduced. ● Subsidies – A typical property would need around £400 per year subsidy, but where would this come from? There is talk of moving levies from electric to gas, or would it come from the general purse? Who knows, but it will be an option on the table when 2025 comes around. ● Manufacturer mandates – We’ve recently heard that from 2024,
10 SEPTEMBER 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Right first time In my auditing work I’ve seen so many bad heat pump installations. Fixing problems costs money – just do it right in the first place. A calculator is not good enough for a heat pump engineer, they need tools, software and apps to help them size systems to a knife edge of accuracy. More funding is also needed for training – we need a strong installer base at the top of its game to deliver quality installations that last the test of time. The government is investing £1.6billion per annum to get heat pumps on a par with gas and £1.58billion of subsidy for fuel energy pricing on electricity – these are huge numbers that show the government is committed to making this happen one way or another. Existing gas engineers and heating installers will make up a large part of the renewables installer base by 2030 – it’s a good time to embrace future technologies and the business opportunities they bring. Ryan Philp, National New Homes Specialist at Daikin, looks at the impact of the Future Homes and Buildings Standard and how heat pumps will help to deliver the required changes.
I
n the UK, buildings are responsible for around 30% of the total greenhouse gas emissions. More than three-quarters (79%) of this results from heating, which alone represents 23% of all UK emissions. Of the emissions attributable to heating, homes account for the biggest section with 17% of total emissions compared to just 4% for commercial buildings and 2% for public buildings. This must be addressed if the UK is to achieve its target of reaching net zero by 2050.
The Future Homes and Buildings Standard
LOOKING TO THE
FUTURE
14 SEPTEMBER 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
The new set of Building Regulations, which will be introduced in 2025, will lead to significant changes in the way new homes in England are built and heated. The new standards will require homes built from 2025 to have a carbon footprint that is at least 75% less than one built to 2013 edition energy efficiency requirements. The homes must also be ‘zero carbon ready’, meaning that no retrofit work will be required to allow the property to become zero-carbon as the electricity grid is decarbonised. To achieve this, the Government is advocating a ‘fabric first’ approach to ensure that new homes, as well as other buildings, are built to a high standard of energy efficiency through insulation and air-tightness. However, the Future Homes and Buildings Standard will also dictate a level of heating performance that essentially eliminates the possibility of using fossil fuel heating, such as a natural gas boiler. The Government response to the consultation on the Future Homes Standard (as it was then known), published in January 2021, notes that there is not likely to be a one-size-fits-all solution but also says it expects heat pumps to become the primary heating technology for new homes. To ease the transition to the 2025 standards, and ensure that emissions reductions are achieved as soon as possible, an interim uplift in Approved
014_PHPI_SEPT22_Layout 1 04/08/2022 14:13 Page 15
Document L standards has been implemented. Under the new standards, which were announced in December 2021 and came into force in June, CO2 emissions from new build homes must be 30% lower compared to 2013 standards. Other new buildings such as offices and shops must achieve a 27% reduction.
The role of heat pumps In many ways heat pump technology is an ideal solution for reducing the carbon impact of residential properties. Air source heat pumps (ASHP) extract energy from the outside air to heat the system’s refrigerant and provide heating and hot water. This allows heat pumps to typically operate at around 300% efficiency – generating 3kw of heat for every 1kw of electricity used – and rising to as much as 400% efficiency under optimum conditions. ASHPs can operate in temperatures as low as -25°C meaning that even in winter, this type of heat pump can still achieve 200% efficiency. As such, ASHPs compare favourably with gas condensing boilers, which typically achieve around 90% efficiency. Utilising heat pumps instead of gas or oil boilers eliminates the direct use of fossil fuels for heat and means a reduction in the amount of energy that homes consume. However, although heat pumps fulfil the same role in the heating system, it is important to remember they do not work in the same way as a gas boiler. Heat pumps generally operate at a lower temperature compared to a traditional gas boiler, typically 50°C to 60°C. Therefore, they are most effective when the heating system is designed and optimised for these temperatures. For example, larger
heat emitters may be required. Indeed, heat pumps perform very well with underfloor heating systems due to the large surface area. In fact, a lower operating temperature is now stipulated in the updated version of Approved Document L to deliver the highest levels of efficiency. It states that new or fully replaced wet heating systems should be designed to operate effectively at a maximum flow temperature of 55°C. Where this does not allow the heating needs of the dwelling to be met, for example if the required size of heat emitter cannot be accommodated, it requires that the system be designed to operate at the lowest temperature possible that still delivers the appropriate output. This means that the new uplift regulations will help to improve the energy efficiency of renovated properties as well as new builds.
Types of heat pump There are three main types of ASHP – split system, monobloc and hybrid heat pumps. Split systems consist of an indoor and outdoor unit connected by refrigerant pipework. It offers flexibility in terms of the placement of the outdoor unit but can only
be installed by an engineer with F-Gas qualifications. Hybrid systems combine air-to-water heat pump technology with a gas condensing boiler. For traditional volume house building, the monobloc ASHP technology is the most suitable. Monobloc systems have only an outdoor unit that connects directly to the heating system, with all the refrigerant-containing circuits sealed within the unit. As it only requires water pipes to be run from the unit into the property, any heating engineer qualified to install a boiler can install a monobloc heat pump with the correct training. The real benefit to the supply chain being that FGas qualified engineers are not required to install them, providing greater flexibility, especially with the on-going skills shortage in mind. It’s also worth mentioning Water Source Heat Pumps (WSHP), which meet the requirement for new build apartment applications. These offer huge potential and flexibility when it comes to integration with heat networks and smart grids. And are particularly suited where installation space is limited, especially when it comes to balconies and in terms of planning regulation obligations. The changes driven by the recent updates and the Future Homes and Buildings Standard will change the heating industry, but also represent an opportunity for installers. This is especially true for those that invest in heat pump training now and establish their business in this area as the heat pump sector ramps up ahead of 2025. AN
OLDER HOME RENEWED PHPI looks at how one Oxfordshire homeowner transformed their ‘hard to heat’ home with a renewable heating system.
C
onsumer interest in heat pump technology was already high prior to the rise in fuel prices. The growing interest in heat pumps has also been boosted by recent changes to Part L of the Building Regulations and the Government’s desire to move away from traditional fossil fuel boilers on the UK’s journey towards Net Zero. As renewables become more appealing, it is worth looking at how technology such as heat pumps and Solar PV can be suitable for both new build properties and older properties.
Challenges In December 2021, the owners of a four-bedroom, detached Oxfordshire property decided to upgrade its central heating system. At the time the home was heated by an oil boiler and the owners, who

care deeply about the environment, wanted to switch to a low carbon alternative. They contacted one of Grant UK’s G1 Installers, Busy Energy Ltd, for advice who identified several challenges in making the switch. “The property was your typical ‘hard to heat’ home”, explained Adrian Liddell, the company’s Managing Director. “The property had smaller pipework and

radiators to suit a higher temperature fossil fuelled system which meant it was not possible to simply disconnect the boiler and re-connect a heat pump with the upgraded cylinder. “Also, the property is in a very rural, quiet location and the outside of the property is tastefully finished so the aesthetics had to match the property’s character as well as being designed to provide the correct comfort levels whilst remaining affordable to operate.” Busy Energy recommended the Aerona³ 17kW R32 air source heat pump, which has the largest output available in Grant’s heat pump range. With a twin-fan unit which achieves excellent efficiencies, it is compact in design and has been awarded the Quiet Mark. “The property where the Aerona³ heat pump is fitted has a large downstairs area then upstairs is similar to a large dormer where in effect most of the rooms are in the roof, so the correct insulation levels had to be installed ahead of the heat pump
installation. A heat pump may not have been the obvious answer for this home but we were able to design a system that meant that an air source heat pump could be successfully installed to meet the household’s heating demand.”
Solar A Grant QR 300ltr pre-plumbed cylinder was also installed, which incorporates a
large stainless internal coil, allowing for efficient heat transfer within the cylinder; it also has a high level of insulation to ensure low standing heat losses, and so makes for a good combination with the heat pump. “We also recommended solar PV as part of this installation,” continued Adrian. “It was installed with an 8.2kW battery store system which diverts power to the property or the heating as required and stores power for evening use. 900m of underfloor heating pipework was also fitted alongside new radiators throughout the upstairs of the property – this was all designed to MIS3005 standards.” The installation of the new heating system was completed in February 2022 and the heat pump is currently outperforming an oil boiler which is fitted in a neighbouring property, also owned by the client. HANDLE THE
PRESSURE
Resideo introduces its range of new VC water valves.
H
The new VC valve from Resideo is as simple to fit as its spring-return counterparts but can handle greater pressure with ease.
aving introduced its two and three port valves over 40 years ago, Resideo has now unveiled its latest VC water valve range. The range is designed with additional wiring functionality and the ability to handle a higher-pressure differential of bars. This makes them suited to larger heating systems with higher flow rates, or installations with more powerful circulation pumps. Installers may already be familiar with the VC range as they have been used in combination boilers for a number of years. 5m and 6m pumps are standard for many installations. However, installers fitting a heating system in a larger property with a hot water cylinder and around 30 radiators, may choose 7m or 8m higher pressure pumps to ensure the effective circulation of water through the system. This increased pressure can cause the issue of heated water seeping through standard domestic zone valves – running into radiators – when water was only called for by the hot water cylinder. The same issue applies to heat pump installations where the low heat requires a bigger circulation pump selection to push the water around the circuit.
Wiring options To ensure no water can pass through the valve when in the closed position, the new heavy duty VC valve has been designed with a robust, linear mechanism that moves up and down to open and close the valve

and can resist up to 4 bars of pressure without leakage. The VC valve also comes with various wiring options to assist with a greater range of applications. This allows greater flexibility for installers wanting to connect the valve to the thermostat, boiler and even a heat pump. It can also add a priority route where the hot water is heated before the radiators, so that it works effectively in conjunction with the service called for. Steve Mist, Senior Technical Support Supervisor, from Resideo commented: “We are seeing more multiple zoned properties and an increased number of heat pump installations – as we move to lower the nation’s carbon emissions – this brings the need for higher pressure circulation pumps to ensure the water can be pushed around the system effectively. As this may take the pressure over 0.7 bars, installers need a solution that will marry up to ensure water does not pass through the valve when not called for. “The new VC valve from Resideo is as simple to fit as its spring-return counterparts but can handle greater pressure with ease. This means it can be the ideal option for installers taking on larger or renewable heating installations. And also future-proof a system if a homeowner is looking to switch to a heat pump.” To find out more information on the new VC valve from Resideo please www.rdr.link/pai 015

With TRVs once again in the spotlight, Pegler provides a guide to installing one.
Installing a TRV T
he squeeze on UK household income has increased exponentially, fueled by the cost of energy rising by more than 50% which is predicted to escalate even more this autumn. The gas boiler is predominantly the biggest energy using appliance in UK homes, in fact according to BEAMA it is responsible for around 80% of total energy used in the home.
Save energy So, with homeowners looking at ways in which they can help to mitigate some of the energy cost increases, along with new Part L Building Regulations that came into force in June this year – which state that when upgrading or replacing a boiler, TRVs should also be installed – the importance of TRVs is once again in the spotlight. And, with many consumers still believing that a TRV is just a valve to turn on or off the radiator, it is down to installers to ensure their customers fully understand the true benefits of them. In fact, BEAMA also states that by reducing wasted heat from overheating rooms could provide an energy saving of 18%.
To help, the team behind the Pegler Terrier TRV range has provided a best practice guide to installing TRVs…

MULTI-LAYER Multi-layer piping solutions offer a flexible, single solution for a wide range of applications, combining the advantages of plastic and metal piping systems. Antony Corbett, product applications engineer at Geberit and a technical representative of the British Plastics Federation - Pipes Group, explores the benefits.
W
e all know the pressure that construction projects are under in the current climate. Construction output prices continue to rise – up 6.2% in the 12 months to December 2021, according to the Office for National Statistics – and with rising costs, it becomes more important to deliver projects on-time and on-budget. Consequently, getting it right first time is critical to help cut installation time and minimise project costs. That starts with correct material selection. For heating and plumbing engineers, one of the most important choices to make is in the material for pipes supplying water around a building. Getting this wrong can lead to costly repairs. It could result in faulty fittings and leakages, corrosion and even hygiene issues such as limescale build-up and risk of Legionella. This is before considering the cost of rectifying incorrect choices across projects.
Changing material trends Copper and plastics have both proven their worth over the years for hot and cold potable water supply systems. Copper offers benefits including inherent strength and stability, resistance to the effects of heat and pressure, as well as hygiene properties. It has been used extensively since the 1940s (and particularly since the 1969 ban on lead piping) and remains a common choice for many engineers. Some tradespeople have switched to plastic piping, which is flexible, inexpensive, easy to install and impacted less by freezing.
Multi-layer piping systems are becoming increasingly popular – combining the benefits of metals and plastics, delivering a strong and flexible solution. Conscious of the need to make highly considered early choices and driven by key factors such as cost, reliability and ease of installation, plumbers on both small to medium sized projects are considering this adaptable all-rounder – which is suitable for a broad scope of applications.
Delivering project benefits Multi-layer pipework is not a new solution. In fact, the first multi-layer composite pipes were introduced to the UK market over 40 years ago. With greater discussion over materials selection and increased awareness of the benefits, it is proving to be an effective all-rounder that can overcome the challenges faced on projects. The product typically consists of three main layers: an outer plastic layer usually made of polyethylene, followed by a central aluminium layer, ensuring that the pipe can be bent into position and remain in shape, and finally a final plastic inner, usually made from the same or similar material to the outside layer. Multi-layer piping is corrosion-resistant, hygienic and the aluminium layer offers a barrier to oxygen diffusion through the pipe wall. This minimises the risk of damage from corrosion elsewhere in the system. It offers reduced thermal expansion requirements due to the metal layer, is a poor heat conductor and has low intrinsic scrap value too, reducing the risk of theft

from site which remains a concern for some in the industry. Crucially, it delivers a system which is stronger and more durable than plastic piping, yet lighter and more flexible than metal options. This winning combination not only ensures a more efficient installation, but also overcomes many of the specification challenges that could lead to errors or faults later down the line. With new technologies including press-fit innovations constantly in development, the solution will only improve.
Updating standards I have seen the shift towards multi-layer piping at first hand, not only through commercial sales at Geberit but through an increased focus from the British Plastics Federation Pipes Group. As a trade federation it is our responsibility to ensure that these standards are understood and updated in line with changing industry trends and we ensure multi-layer piping is included. The focus is on making sure multi-layer piping products and systems are correct for the marketplace and that installers are aware of how they can and should be using such products for various applications. Ultimately, this is happening because multi-layer piping is a proven technology, here to stay and with a host of benefits for heating engineers across a wide range of projects. With sustainability a growing issue, now is a great time to recommend bathroom fittings which save water, but while also creating a great experience.
As sustainability becomes an increasing concern amongst UK homeowners, finding high-quality, water-reducing products for areas like the bathroom, where most of our water consumption goes, can help to boost your installer credentials. It can also help customers to reduce their household bills – an increasing concern as the impact of inflation continues to bite. Here, Keith Dyson National Technical Sales Manager at Hansgrohe UK, discusses how installers are well placed to recommend products that will not only help to reduce water and energy consumption but also create great customer experiences, whilst being made to last.
I
n the last decade, UK homeowners have increasingly started to consider sustainability as a major part of their home renovation projects. However, to achieve a more sustainable bathroom, the last thing they want to compromise on is performance. The technology included in latest eco showers and showerheads mean that installing water-saving options can be effective and straight-forward and, importantly, maintain the bathroom experiences many homeowners are looking for. What’s more, less water used is also less water that needs to be heated, so switching to a product with integrated sustainable technology will help your customers save on their heating bills too.
Reduce water flow EcoSmart technology from hansgrohe for example, reduces the water flow automatically to around six to none litres per minute using various methods including mixing in air and special flow limitations. EcoSmart can be integrated into hand showers and overhead showers, using up to 60% less water than a conventional shower head.
Most importantly, your customer will still get an incredible shower experience despite the low flow rate. There are multiple spray patterns to choose from with EcoSmart shower heads including invigorating rain spray, a whirling massage spray and PowderRain – a fine spray of micro-droplets that also help to reduce noise and minimise splashing, helping to create that relaxing showering experience so many are looking for.

Stylish and sustainable Even if sustainability is a top priority for a homeowner’s bathroom renovation project, most will be cautious about potentially compromising their own personal tastes and style to achieve this. As an installer, you can provide reassurance by recommending large product ranges that have sustainable technology integrated as standard. For instance, EcoSmart technology comes as standard on all basin mixers which limits water flow to just five litres per minute, using up to 60% less than conventional basin mixers. EcoSmart technology is also available across a wide range of hansgrohe showering products and styles, providing a wealth of options for
the eco-conscious customers on a variety of different budgets. We have also incorporated CoolStart technology into a wide range of hansgrohe basin mixers. Achieved by adjusting the cartridge position within the mixer, CoolStart means only cold water will flow when the handle is set in the middle position. It is a simple upgrade that prevents a customer’s boiler or other heating appliance starting up unnecessarily. You can still get hot water when you need it – by deliberately turning the lever to the full hot position.
Showing the difference Helping your customers to visualise the potential savings an upgrade to their bathroom can make through simple fixtures can be a challenge. However, there are plenty of useful resources available online that help calculate the amount of energy a household uses. You can also look out for any useful information provided by manufacturers and suppliers. To help installers educate their customers on water reduction and how this translates in real financial savings, hansgrohe has created the Water Savings Calculator. By simply inputting the number of people in a household and the energy source it uses, you can access the financial savings made by switching to an EcoSmart product. Your customers can also include their average shower time, water costs and energy costs for more accurate results, and choose different EcoSmart products depending on their needs – including overhead showers, hand showers and taps. The technology included in latest eco showers and showerheads mean that installing water-saving options can be effective and straight-forward Future-proofed With the sustainability trend rising, ensuring longevity for bathroom fixtures and fittings is all too important as customers consciously look to reduce waste. We are seeing more people move away from a culture of responding to trends and replacing items regularly to carefully selecting products that will last for years to come. But, with so many brands offering different guarantees and warranties it can be difficult to navigate the products with the most longevity. Looking out for products that guarantee every single part is a good way to provide reassurance to customers should any issues arise. hansgrohe manufacturers its own mixer cartridges and the whole product is guaranteed by a five-year manufacturer’s warranty. We are also able to uphold our spare parts guarantee even after the product is discontinued – for up to 15 years. This provides further peace of mind on the continuity of supply for you and your customers – allowing you to simply ‘fit and forget’. For more information, please www.rdr.link/pai020

PLUMBING & BATHROOMS
Give an outlet a PHPI finds out how plumbers can help to give water pressure a boost and tackle the problem of trickling taps.
T
rickling taps can be a nuisance for homeowners. Salamander Pumps, a manufacturer of water boosting solutions, has recently announced the launch of a new TapBoost pump – designed to offer a cost-effective solution to improve the performance of a single outlet. Here, Mike Oxley, Technical Training Manager at Salamander Pumps, explains how to install a TapBoost pump.
Pre-installation checks Before installation, there are a few checks you’ll need to conduct to ensure that TapBoost is the most suitable pump for the job in hand. There are three questions you need to ask. ● How many outlets do you want to boost? TapBoost is designed to improve the water flow to a single outlet suffering with poor water flow – such as a tap, toilet cistern or washing machine. If more than one outlet requires boosting, a different solution such as a shower pump, whole house pump or accumulator tank may be more suitable. ● What flow rate exists at the outlet? TapBoost requires a minimum flow rate of 1.2 litres per minute to activate. If you’re
not sure whether the existing flow rate is sufficient to activate TapBoost, you can measure it by following these steps:
1
● Hold a measuring jug
under the outlet which will be boosted. ● Turn on the outlet to fully hot or cold, depending on which is to be boosted. ● Measure the water gathered in 10 seconds, in millilitres. If you have gathered at least 200ml in 10 seconds, then TapBoost will be suitable. ● What will TapBoost deliver? TapBoost runs at a constant speed, meaning that the boosted flow is
7-11L /min
TapBoost will improve the water flow to 7-11 L/min depending on incoming flow.
32 SEPTEMBER 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
dependent on the incoming natural flow. For example, when the incoming natural flow is 1.2 L/min TapBoost will boost the flow to up to 7 L/min. Alternatively, when the incoming natural flow is 4 L/min, TapBoost will boost the flow to 8 L/min. TapBoost will boost the flow rate up to a maximum of 11 L/min. If the natural flow goes above 11L/min will enter idle mode. TapBoost cannot overcome restrictions in the pipework or outlet.
Installation
STEP
UNBOX THE PUMP Begin by unboxing the pump and reading the enclosed literature. Although it may seem obvious, the installation guide should always be your first port of call – even for experienced plumbers.
032_PHPI_SEPT22_Layout 1 04/08/2022 11:29 Page 33
o STEP
CONNECT TAPBOOST
2 STEP
Turn off the incoming water supply and drain the system. Next, measure the section of pipe to be removed to allow for your method of connection. Then cut and remove the pipe. You can then create the connection between TapBoost and the inlet and outlet pipework. TapBoost has a 15mm compression fitting on the inlet, so the pump can be fitted directly to the pipework. The outlet has a ½” BSP male connection which allows TapBoost to be installed in a range of applications.
DETERMINE THE INSTALLATION LOCATION TapBoost should ideally be installed directly before the outlet to be boosted. The pump should be protected from frost, and both the pump and the power supply should be installed indoors. If fitting in a bathroom the TapBoost pump can be installed in Zone 2 (see diagram) or ideally outside of the bathroom. The electrical power supply unit and mains plug must be located outside of the bathroom and must be protected against moisture and water.
3
4 STEP
COMMISSION THE PUMP To successfully activate the pump on first operation, you must first turn on incoming water supply to the pump and refill the system. After this, open the outlet to be boosted and check for natural flow from the outlet, ensuring all air is purged from the system. You should also check the connections and pipework for leaks. With the outlet open, plug in the electrical supply to TapBoost and turn on. TapBoost will then enter ‘Boosting Mode’ (indicated by a blue flashing light on the pump), and increase the water flow to the outlet. Close the outlet and the pump will stop. The blue light will stay on to indicate it has entered ‘Standby Mode’. The pump will remain in ‘Standby Mode’ until the outlet is opened, when it will again begin boosting the flow. When the pump is in ‘Standby Mode’ for more than five minutes, the blue LED on the pump will turn off until the outlet is opened again and the pump enters ‘Boosting Mode’ again.
Final steps Make sure to re-check the full installation for any possible leaks before tidying up. Keep relevant literature and register the warranty. To do this please www.rdr.link/pai021 Zone 2 – The area stretching 600mm beyond zone 1, outside of the bath or shower, be that above or to the sides of each.

Touchless flush
Jerry Whiteley, Technical Manager at The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), talks us through the installation of Roca’s EM1 Touchless dual flush valve.
I
am probably a typical plumber, jobs at home are always the last ones to get done. I recently decided to sort out the flushing issue we had with the downstairs toilet. The button on the drop valve had become harder to push and I was getting the family saying, don’t we have a plumber! We’ve all heard that one. Then, I came across Roca’s EM1 touchless flush, which was an ideal solution. The advantages of a touchless flush upgrade are it works on the movement of your hand and activates the flush automatically without contact. These types of automatic sensors are becoming ever more popular because they also help avoid spreading viruses and the growth of bacteria. Many manufacturers are now making taps and other components suitable for the domestic market as demand grows.
1
STEP To get started, I turned off the water supply to the cistern via its service valve and disconnected the pipe, removed the lid. Removing the cistern via the coupling bolts was simple as they had not corroded and jammed up. Once I had emptied out the remaining water, I protected with an old towel and laid the cistern on its back, ready to remove the existing drop valve. Changing over the drop valve for the new one was straight forward. Once the old one is out, clean off the surfaces from any grit or debris etc. Always be careful not to over tighten the locking nut when fitting the drop valve, because like any plastic nut, if cross threaded it can strip the thread and you’ll require a new part, which is an expense you haven’t allowed for. I always carry spare donut washer. I replaced the donut washer; this is best practice and because you tend to find the old one has either lost its compression, become split or perished. If you don’t, then you might well be taking the cistern off again to do it anyway.
Re-assembling the cistern back onto the pan and re-connecting the water ready for testing with a manual flush helps with checking for minor drips that might not show up on the first flush or two as the sealing ring compresses from being bolted together in between the pan and cistern.

STEP I removed the existing chrome push button from the cistern lid; this needs to be a ⌀40mm hole to match up again. The battery pack which must be fitted to the overflow pipe, holds four AA batteries and should do at least 40,000 flushes. Insert the batteries and connect the two cables. One red, one black, simply push/screw them to their corresponding connections at the top of the new valve. The button will flash a red light when the batteries are running low but the button will still retain the ability to flush manually in case the batteries fail or the user decides to flush manually.

STEP
The whole job took me around 45 minutes. r.link /p ai023 I know that not all cistern removals are simple as access can be awkward, water might not completely turn off, float valves can be easily cross threaded and screws or bolts heavily corroded. The experienced plumber will know to go prepared with spares and deal with potential problems. Within the box, Roca has included a useful photocard with the EM1to ensure homeowners know how to use it correctly. For more information, please www.rdr.link/pai024
EM1 Touchless dual flush valve
STEP The push button plastic rod underneath will need cutting to length to allow a manual flush operation should you need to and to suit the height of the cistern and lid you are fitting it with. You can adjust the water usage flushing from 6/4, 4.5/3 or 4/2 litres accordingly. This can help you save on your annual water usage.
The EM1 Touchless dual flush valve offers zero contact and maximum hygiene, reducing the need to touch flush buttons. With a minimalistic design, the EM1 valve can be retrofitted to upgrade an existing push button to an automatic toilet flush button. There is no electric connection needed and it is powered by 4 AA batteries (not included) that guarantee more than 40,000 flushes. It is also easy to use - with just a simple wave of the hand, the EM1 recognises the required flush (full or half flush volumes) and with the sleek sensor push button, you can flush your WC in an easy and hygienic way. The EM1 is not only ideal for those looking for a hygienic solution but also for those who may need an accessible product that suits the older generation or those with limited dexterity. C
ondensing boilers, especially those in the light commercial sector, have developed considerably during the last decade to ensure they operate efficiently and effectively. Components such as the burner and controls, as well as the latest modulating circulation pumps and energy efficient heat exchangers, have all become essential for long-term performance and reliability. Modern units – such as ATAG Commercial’s new XL-F and XL-W models
– have evolved even further; these boilers have all their main components integrated inside, significantly reducing installation time, costs and the physical space required in which to fit them. Plus, by making all the key parts accessible from the front of the boiler, installation, ongoing servicing and maintenance becomes easier. It also helps reduce engineers’ time on site. In order to maintain high levels of energy efficiency, it is imperative for the pump and the heat exchanger to work together in unison.

Heat transfer It is widely recognised throughout the industry that heat exchanger technology has advanced significantly, with an increased ability to maximise heat transfer, while still maintaining reliability. This can be attributed to the vast majority of modern heat exchangers being made from stainless steel and comprising multiple, specially engineered pipes, which provide the capacity for high levels of heat transference and condensation. Of course, heat exchangers are also designed to optimise the transfer of the thermal energy generated by burning gas into the system water. However, they are unable to absorb the maximum amount of heat if the flow rate and turbulence of the water passing through it is too low. This is where the pump comes into play. In high efficiency boilers, a modulating circulation pump is used to ensure the water inside the heat exchanger remains turbulent. In turn, this turbulence agitates the water flow, ensuring there is no insulating barrier between the heated water and the wall of the heat exchanger, resulting in a rapid transfer of heat. Turbulent flow occurs when the velocity in the water channel is high: a factor determined by the pump.
038_PHPI_SEPT22_Layout 1 04/08/2022 11:19 Page 39
Modulating pumps Indeed, at ATAG Commercial, we’ve taken things a step further, by fitting two intelligent modulating pumps inside our newest dual heat exchanger boilers. Doing so enables the boilers to communicate with the pumps and receive feedback on their operational status. These pumps constantly monitor the flow rate, as well as recognise blockages – preventing damage, while guaranteeing optimal operating conditions and improving boiler efficiency. A turbulent flow guarantees a better heat transfer coefficient when compared to a laminar flow, thereby keeping energy efficiency as high as possible. This higher transfer rates also ensure a boiler reaches set-point temperature quicker. Plus, the excellent heat transfer provided by the modulating control system coupled with the condensing heat exchanger and the modulating pump, enables the heat exchanger to reach and maintain set-point temperature while minimising energy input.
This brings us full circle back to the heat exchanger itself. In order for this component to perform effectively, it should have specially designed hydraulic chambers, where water turbulence is optimised to ensure maximum heat transfer, while maintaining the lowest possible pressure drop. Some boilers now
also benefit from dual heat exchangers that operate independently from one another, effectively working as an internal cascade. Then, in the event of one heat exchanger requiring replacement or repair, the other remains fully operational, ensuring a system doesn’t completely lose heat during maintenance or servicing. So, light commercial boilers have certainly come a long way, particularly in terms of efficiency and reliability. By making huge strides in improving key components such as heat exchangers and circulating pumps, boilers are now benefitting from improved modulation ratios and faster heat-up times. As a result, by fitting modern, technological advanced models equipped with the latest state-of-the-art components, installers can ensure any future project benefits from exceptional levels of energy efficiency and durability. 7 COMMERCIAL PLUMBING TIPS As commercial work picks up pace, plumbers need ways to make their working lives easier and more productive. Martin Nicholson, Divisional Director, Specification Team North, draws on RWC’s products and insight to show the way forward.
P
ost Covid, the immediate future for commercial plumbing is pretty clear to see. More work, and lots of it as the UK makes up for lost time. There’s plenty of stimulus, including plans for over 500 high-rise towers in London and a Government commitment to building 40 new hospitals over the next decade. While all of this will keep us busy, there’s plenty to keep us thinking too – not least the need to deliver more choice and quality, at less cost, and in the most sustainable way possible. And all this at a time when there’s a national shortage of skills and product availability. So, what can plumbers, installers and specifiers do to make sure they’re not just meeting the challenges, but actually benefitting from them too?
Work fast, work efficiently Everyone’s under pressure to work faster, but that doesn’t mean working harder. Here, newer methods can replace traditional time-consuming approaches
just faster to install either. They’re also useful when space is at a premium.
Make space in your life
such as soldering. For example, RWC’s range of push-fit fittings include two flagship brands – JG Speedfit (plastic) and SharkBite (brass) which can be used to configure reliable pipework from the boiler to point of use. They’re designed to make installations more intuitive and straightforward for installers with varying professional experiences, so they’re ideal in a time of skills shortages. They’re not

Whether it’s in offices or residential buildings, people want more space. In giving it to them, architects tend to take it away from plumbers, forcing them to work in increasingly cramped areas in cupboards, beneath sinks and in between walls. Anyone who’s tried to fit meters and a myriad of valves (stop, double check and PRVs) into these spaces knows the challenges inside out. Here, new products such as Tenant Valve Plus by Reliance Valves can be a game-changer as they combine all of these functions into one compact, single casting solution that is easy to install. Another benefit of the single casting solution is that there are no leak points – and being fully serviceable from the front of the valve means commissioning, testing and maintenance is easier too.
040_PHPI_SEPT22_Layout 1 04/08/2022 11:15 Page 41

A wide range of technologies are now available from RWC’s family of brands – Reliance Valves, SharkBite and JG Speedfit to help create this experience, which all connect systems to deliver the safe, reliable and precise control of water flow in buildings. Helping win the hearts and minds of customers, these technologies have a big role to play in delivering successful projects. And RWC’s Multisafe solution is the latest development within this range giving the customer and building manager a complete leak detection and monitoring system against flooding and microleakage within the property.
Think healthcare, and safety COVID highlighted the importance of healthcare, and it’s prompted a huge wave of investment in hospitals and other key facilities with open public access. This makes it a big area of interest for the plumbing trade, which will be tasked with creating a safe, comfortable, and cost-efficient environment. Here, valves will have a big role to play, with three in particular as the focus: Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMVs), Anti-Legionella Valves (ALVs) and Thermal Balancing Valves (TBVs). TMVs are designed to regulate temperatures to prevent injuries from scalding, and Reliance Valves Heatguard Dual and Ausimix are certified for use in high risk commercial healthcare applications by various bodies, including the NHS Estates Guidance and the independent TMV3 Scheme (D08). Similarly, Reliance Valves Anti-Legionella valve is WRAS certified and designed to help prevent the build-up of dangerous bacteria in cold water expansion vessels, where water stagnation can often occur and place a potential health risk to the system users. Reliance Valves TBVs use a thermostatic element to automatically balance circulating hot water systems, ensuring it works at peak performance – constantly maintaining hot water supply temperatures even across larger properties, no matter the distance from the heat source. Individually or together, these will help create better and safer healthcare places.

Be prevntative, not reactive Typical commercial plumbing issues include leaks, blockages, pressures, temperature problems, system debris and smells. These all cause challenges during installation, and they’re likely to bring you back for repairs and maintenance. If there’s one overall tip, it’s to think ahead and make sure they don’t become a problem in the first place… and if they do, that they’re easy to fix. Valves from RWC’s Reliance Valves brand have a robust design and useful functionality. They are also designed for easy maintenance and upgrading. For example, the Anti-Legionella Valve has a rotatable tee-piece and integral isolating valve, while the Tenant Valve Plus has optional connections for Class ‘A’ or Class ‘D’ water meters and a reversable pressure gauge for HIU / TIU installations.

Think customer, think smart Today, more than ever, customers hold influence and power. They also expect more choice and comfort, and control over their environment. These hold the key to great buildings, delivered through a new generation of smart heating solutions.
Embrace underfloor Yes, underfloor heating (UFH) has been around a while, but now that gas boilers are being phased out it’s going to become even more popular, so it’s a great time to get on board. With a whole suite of solutions suitable for new build and retrofit applications, RWC’s JG Underfloor heating brand is fully supported with a free CAD design and estimation service, as well as technical support before, during and after installation.

Work sustainably As the world faces increasing environmental challenges, this is non-negotiable and must become part of every plumber’s philosophy. Sustainability isn’t just about environmentally friendly products and recycling. It’s also about the other issues we’ve mentioned – building faster, safer and more cost-effectively, deploying SMART technology to use less energy; being more aware of the value of space; protecting valuable resources such as water and, of course, embracing new heating technologies. MEMBER INTERVIEW DAVID GAMMAGE The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) members each have a unique story. We talked to David Gammage Eng Tech MCIPHE RP RHP about his experience in the sector and what quality means to him.
Q
What is your background? Can you tell us about your career journey to date? I’ve been in the plumbing and heating industry for 22 years, starting out as an apprentice at 16 in 2000. My apprenticeship training was based at Croydon college one day per week and the remaining four days were spent working with my father, a qualified plumbing and heating engineer. This experience allowed me to achieve an NVQ Level 2 & 3 in Mechanical Engineering Services as well as pass my ACS exam. Through this, I could register for gas accreditation which was called Corgi at the time. After 12 years, I began working for Watkins Plumbing Ltd as a customer care engineer. I then moved into the maintenance division. My day-to-day involved Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), rectifying breakdowns and servicing of commercial gas systems. I now hold the position of Quality Assurance Supervisor which I was promoted into around 12 months ago. This role involves overseeing all aspects of quality assurance throughout the company. As the appointed person for domestic and non-domestic gas operation, I am also responsible for internal auditing, training and company policies.
Q
Why is quality work so important in your field?
I primarily work in the new build sector, which involves high-end residential properties such as multi-floor flats and conventional housing types, through to educational institutions. New build developments tend to come with a stigma around the quality of products being used. This can be particularly challenging in the
current age of social media, as negative views on an individual or business can easily and rapidly spread. That is why the quality of work being completed on behalf of the business needs to be of a high standard. Not only will this significantly reduce the risk of future defects and associated costs, but it also goes towards building a company’s reputation in a positive way.
having on the heating and plumbing industry? When a customer encounters a rogue trader, they could be left thousands of pounds out of pocket trying to put the work right. It’s not only saddening that rogue traders continue to operate with no regard for public safety, but it’s frustrating committing to professional development when the unscrupulous few damage our industry’s reputation. This why I believe it is so important for an organisation such as the CIPHE to be at the forefront of our industry, raising and promoting high standards.
Q
How is the industry changing? What new opportunities have emerged/are on the horizon
Q
Why is having a CIPHE membership important in regard to quality? Having a CIPHE membership is like a badge of honour for me. To become a member, we commit to being governed by the Code of Professional Standards which shows that we agree to act professionally, competently, and responsibly. As such, maintaining high standards is key and ongoing competency is also crucial. By keeping abreast of the changes in the industry this gives customers confidence to know that, if they use a registered CIPHE individual or business, they will receive a high quality of work which is undertaken competently in line with best practice.
Q
What are your views on the rogue traders that continue to operate, and the impact they are

More projects are moving away from conventional fossil fuel burning appliances – such as boilers and combined heat and power units – and are replacing them with technologies such as commercial heat pumps. Likewise, we are seeing a shift from conventional chemically treated systems to “chemical free” systems with treatment that works to a VDI 2035 standard. With the roll out of heat pumps and low temperature systems underway, it is great to see the CIPHE, LCL Awards and Heat Pump Association addressing skills with the new Low Temperature Heating and Hot Water System in Dwellings Course. As a gas engineer myself, I’m excited to see how the hydrogen roll out will evolve over the next 10 years. I personally believe a mixture of technologies will be required, rather than a single method. To find out more about CIPHE membership please visit CIPHE.org.uk

DRAYTON AUTO-BALANCING TRV
CLIPACORE FLUEMATE
Drayton has launched its new auto-balancing TRV technology, available for two of its most popular ranges – TRV4 and RT414. The chrome thermostatic radiator valve has been designed for UK domestic applications and have the same dimensions as all GB pattern valve bodies found in UK systems, meaning no pipework needs to be changed when retrofitting. Once installed and set, the auto-balancing valves will ensure that radiators permanently receive the correct flow rate regardless of other TRVs opening and closing or changes to the system.
Stubborn to remove 4” aluminium flue pipes can require hammering out which in turn can disrupt brickwork or render cracking when replacing boiler flues. Fluemate slides inside the 4” aluminium flue pipe (once the 2” plastic pipe is removed by hand) and cuts out a new hole including the safe removal of any adhesives. It comes with a bespoke 94mm barrel, compression spring and a long threaded adaptor. The spring allows the barrel to be removed by hand when not in use. Existing core bits of 117mm, 127mm, 152mm can be used to cut the new hole via the long threaded adaptor which fits on core drill.
