Bounce back Over the past few months much has been made about the outlook for the condensing gas boiler. In the new build sector the government has already indicated a shift to low carbon heating is required from 2025. But with around 25million boilers currently installed across the UK the outlook for the replacement market is less clear. One document that could make the future slightly less opaque is the Government’s Heat in Buildings strategy, originally expected earlier this year. But – as we write – this has yet to be published. In the meantime, the latest information from the Heating & Hot Water Information Council (HHIC) – as reported in the last issue of PHPI – shows that recent gas boiler sales remain very strong, with the 12-month average sales figure increasing by 14%. In fact, the HHIC is suggesting that 2021 could be a record year for gas boiler sales. This may come as a surprise to some who lament the possible future for the gas boiler. However, it should be remembered that the boiler is a familiar appliance to homeowners and installers alike: a home appliance that is, in equal measure, widely understood and completely forgotten about as people get on with their day-to-day lives. Equally, however, it is increasingly clear that things are changing and that the path which the UK government is currently on leads towards greater adoption of low-carbon heating and, in particular, Heat Pumps. The Prime Minister himself has called for the installation of 600,000 Heat Pumps a year by 2028, part of a Green Revolution helping the UK to achieve net zero carbon by 2050. Alongside heat pumps are other alternatives including district heating and electric heating for example. And – bringing it back to the boiler – a number of trials are currently underway to look at using hydrogen in the gas grid and sustainable bio-fuels (such as HVO) for more rural locations. For decades we have been in a reasonably stable position when it comes to the provision of domestic heating and hot water. Due to the climate challenge we face, in the future, this may not be the case. Consequently many other technologies are coming to the fore – all part of a broad mix of heating & hot-water solutions. Getting to grips with as many heating technologies as possible could be a good move for businesses planning for the future.

COST OF HIRING A PLUMBER ON THE RISE

VAILLANT TO MANUFACTURE HEAT PUMPS IN THE UK Vaillant has announced it is to extend its UK manufacturing facility and will begin manufacturing heat pumps alongside its UK range of high efficiency boilers from 2022. The company believes that no one single technology will address the decarbonisation challenge. It believes a combination of hydrogen gas boilers, heat pumps and hybrid systems along with controls and internet connected solutions will be key to meeting the Government’s targets. Vaillant Group UK currently manufactures around half a million natural gas and liquified petroleum gas (LPG) appliances at its Belper plant for the UK market. From 2022, the capacity will be increased to include the aroTHERM plus air-to-water heat pump which was launched in 2020. Joe Dunn, Plant Director of Vaillant Industrial UK said: “As the demand for renewable heating technologies grows at an unprecedented rate in the UK, the Vaillant manufacturing facility will be well placed to meet the demands of the market, contributing to Government targets for the decarbonisation of heat.” For further information www.rdr.link/pc001

The cost of hiring a plumbing contractor has risen by 4.5 per cent in a month, according to the latest analysis of pay trends in the construction sector. Hudson Contract, the UK’s largest provider of tax status and employment contract services to the building industry, said average weekly earnings increased to £967 during May. Ian Anfield, Managing Director, said: “We are starting to see the impact of people leaving the UK ahead of the EU Settlement Scheme deadline on June 30 and not being replaced by incomers. First and foremost, this is affecting London which has the highest concentration of foreign construction workers and the most transient labour market. There is shedloads of construction work about and growing pressure on the availability of both labour and materials.”

BOILER MANUFACTURERS MAKE HYDROGEN-READY BOILER PRICE-PROMISE The UK’s major boiler manufacturers have made a new price promise so a hydrogen-ready boiler will cost no more than its natural gas equivalent. The move is designed to help consumers reduce carbon emissions from home heating and hot water and assist delivering the UK’s net zero commitments. With the price-promise boilers manufactured in the UK by Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi and Ideal will cost no more than a natural gas boiler at current volume levels. Mike Foster, Chief Executive of the boiler industry’s trade association, the Energy and Utilities Alliance (EUA) who brokered the deal, said: “Our own research tells us that consumers want to do their bit to reduce the impact of their homes and help deliver a greener future, but are concerned about the cost of some low carbon technologies. This price-promise from the Big Four ensures that consumers will be able to access an affordable low carbon heat and hot water solution.” The price-promise was delivered in a letter to Kwasi Kwarteng, the Secretary of State at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Mr Foster noted: “The Committee on Climate Change, which advises the government, assumed that a hydrogen-ready boiler would cost £100 more than a natural gas boiler and that the total cost to consumers of decarbonising their homes would be £2.3 billion. The price-promise is a great deal for consumers.”

POSITIVE SIGNS FROM HVO TRIALS Early results from UK HVO trials signal a major step forward for renewable liquid heating fuel development. The UK wide trials of a renewable alternative to kerosene suggest that the new liquid fuel works in virtually all existing oil heating systems with only simple modifications, while reducing carbon emissions by almost 90%. Nineteen sites across the country are now running Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) in a range of heating and cooking appliances in both domestic and commercial settings. The fuel is made from fossil free, sustainable waste materials and certified via the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) scheme. OFTEC CEO Paul Rose comments: “The initial trial results are highly encouraging and add further evidence to our belief that HVO offers oil heated households an attractive, low cost, low disruption solution to decarbonisation. “Converting properties from heating oil to HVO is a simple process that costs around £500 compared to the thousands of pounds it currently costs to install a completely new low carbon heating system and the associated fabric improvements required for many hard to treat homes.” “Crucially, at almost 90%, the carbon savings achieved are significant and would enable government’s decarbonisation goals to be met quickly and more cheaply.”

70% OF BRITS HAVE NEVER HAD A FEMALE TRADESPERSON IN THEIR HOME A new survey for Baxi has revealed that almost three quarters of Brits (70%) have never had a female tradesperson in their homes. According to the study of over 1,000 homeowners, commissioned by Baxi to coincide with International Women in Engineering Day in June, an overwhelming 94% said they would have complete trust in a qualified female tradesperson carrying out work in their home. And while 65 per cent of homeowners would like to have the choice of either a male or female heating engineer, plumber or electrician, just under a quarter (24%) of women polled said they would feel ‘safer’ if they had a female tradesperson doing the job. Jess Queenan (pictured), a qualified gas engineer for six years and a Baxi Customer Support Engineer, said: “I have a career that I’m proud of and a wage that I’m proud of as well. It would be great to see more women getting into it…hopefully we’ll be breaking through some boundaries over the next few years and making it [women engineers] the norm.”

ATAG COMMERCIAL ANNOUNCES INSTALLER PROMOTION The new promotion – Target 30 – will run across its XL-F, XL-W and QR Series ranges of gas boilers until the end of 2021. Installers will be awarded points for each boiler they register with the company’s service department, with one point given for every QR Series boiler and three points for each XL-F and XL-W model. Upon reaching a target of 30 points, installers can then claim one of two major prizes – either a Testo 300 Flue Gas analyser kit or Apple iWatch 6. Commenting on the initiative, Emiliano Gabrielli, Managing Director at ATAG Commercial, said: “Our boilers are already popular with installers, thanks to their high quality components, robust design and superior levels of performance. The Target 30 promotion allows us to support our customers and reward them for their loyalty. We’re confident installers will appreciate and enjoy the rewards on offer, as well as the reliability and efficiency of the boilers themselves.” To participate in the Target 30 promotion installers are required to register every boiler’s warranty either by emailing service@atagcommercial.co.uk or by calling 01268 546770. SPECIAL REPORT

FUTUREPROOFING RETROFIT PROJECTS Richard Bateman, UK Product Marketing Manager at RWC, discusses best practice on how installers can futureproof systems for retrofit projects.

S

aving costs, quick installations, safety and energy efficiency seem to be hot topics within the plumbing and heating industry at the moment. With UK regulations such as Part G of the Building Regulations and TMV2/TMV3 schemes requiring a certain level of safety and energy efficiency throughout buildings across the country, dated heating and plumbing systems are now requiring renovation. The current economic environment has led to pressure to make existing buildings work harder by retrofitting energy-saving measures, rather than simply rebuilding. This includes plumbing and heating systems, ensuring all futureproofing considerations are taken into account before installation.

Planning pipework A large part of futureproofing your retrofit project is space saving. As we squeeze more housing units into our cities, the footprints of these living spaces grow smaller and smaller,

with residents wanting to make the most of their living space. This leads to increasingly difficult installation environments. Although the current plumbing and heating system is already in place, it may be that the system size needs reducing. Best practice before tackling a retrofit project is to plan and assess the current pipework system. Depending on when the system was originally installed, new pipes, valves and fittings (PVF) may need to be added in order to make the system as efficient as possible. Therefore, installers need to seek products that are designed for compact spaces, while providing the same level of quality and efficiency.

Using flexible solutions is an easy way to fit pipework into compact spaces, allowing installers to bend the pipes in any direction, knowing the water flow won't be affected. The range of stainless steel hoses with an EPDM liner from RWC’s Reliance Valves is designed for drinking water applications, primarily for flexible connections between the system and the expansion vessel. Meanwhile RWC’s JG Speedfit offers a wide range of flexi hoses suitable for cold and hot water applications, offering both push-fit and hand-tighten connectivity. Not only does space and efficiency need to be kept in mind, but weatherproofing pipes is a crucial part of futureproofing plumbing and heating systems. Best practice is to avoid putting pipes in rooms that are prone to cold, such as lofts or basements. If pipework needs to be placed in or outside these areas, it should be properly protected and insulated. Without lagging, the water in the pipes can freeze, creating internal pressure that can cause them to burst.

Futureproofing safely When taking on a retrofit project, guidelines and regulations need to be at the forefront of your mind. With several industry regulations to consider, there’s also the energy requirements that need to be met. Water Regulation Schedule 2.7 is a key regulation that needs to be considered when working on any plumbing and heating system. In a nutshell, this

10 SEPTEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

010_PHPI_SEPT21_Layout 1 06/08/2021 09:26 Page 11

regulation covers where and how you should run pipes in any building with a mains water supply. It states that there should be no inaccessible fittings within the concealed floor, as the regulation does not allow for it. Secondly, the entire length of pipe carrying the water should be within a conduit (a protective sleeve for the pipe) and is therefore easily removable. To make a retrofit system more efficient and safer for the end user, a thermostatic tap or thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) would also need to be installed if there isn’t one to the bath as regulated by law. The

When taking on a retrofit project, guidelines and regulations need to be at the forefront of your mind.

Building Regulations 2000, Approved Document G – Sanitation, hot water safety and water efficiency came into effect in 2010, in order to deliver water at safe temperatures and fight off harmful Legionella bacteria. Whether it’s servicing current valves within a system or completely replacing them, health and safety regulations always need to be followed. Futureproofing means built to last, and by aligning to all recommended guidelines, the retrofitted plumbing and heating system should be durable and safe.

Let’s get smart From safer systems to smarter systems – in a retrofit project, installers have the opportunity to get smart with the products they choose to install. Smart controls are becoming increasingly popular as they provide an accurate reading as well as showing convenience for the user. Around 60% of a home’s energy costs are spent on heating, so there are long-term gains to be made by using smart controls. Smart controls should be chosen on their performance and features, including the ability for customisation. For instance,

JG Underfloor’s Aura smart controls can combine underfloor heating and radiators to a single controlling system through its wireless thermostats and TRVs (Thermostatic Radiator Valves). These can be programmed to deliver desired temperatures, in specified zones/individual rooms, at specific times throughout the day, helping cut fuel bills by up to 30%. Installing smart controls also allows easy future maintenance, as a backlog of data can be accessed, and settings can be changed. As the world moves more towards connected technology, approaching retrofit projects with this in mind will result in a more sustainable and efficient industry future. Navigating retrofit projects can be tricky, as each installation may require new products or a complete system re-arrangement. From space, safety and smarter solutions, transforming a home’s plumbing and heating system needs due care and diligence. PANEL

Bathroom panels are a popular alternative to tiles and other surfacing solutions. Mermaid’s Keely Greenhalgh shares how installers can refresh a tired-looking bathroom or add a luxury statement look to a new project.

SHOW Preparation

Like with many installations, the preparation of the materials and your tools is one of the most crucial parts of the process. The first step is to thoroughly inspect your panels prior to carrying out any work. Next, prepare the tools for the job: you will require protective goggles and gloves, spirit level and tape measure, Mermaid Complete adhesive and colour matched sealant, 2mm and 5mm spacers, suction lifters, a drill, circular saw, and a jig saw if cutting circular shapes. Next, ensure the surface is suitably prepared for affixing the panels. Mermaid’s Elite panels can be installed directly onto plasterboard or newly plastered walls, or any sound flat wall surface including existing tiled walls. Walls should be dry, clean and damp-free and level, plumb and true.

Cutting and drilling Position the panel face up or down depending on the blade type and start all cuts into the factory-finished postformed edge. As a general rule of thumb, it is always recommended to start the installation from an inside corner with the tongue removed. Jig saws should only be used if scribing curved shapes into the panel. Spade type bits should also be avoided – standard high-speed drill bits or circular hole saw cutters are the best tools for the job. If working on cutting concealed edges, we recommend a circular saw with a sharp blade to achieve the best finish. When cutting the panels, ensure a 3mm clearance around all cut outs and holes which will be back filled with Mermaid Complete colour matched sealant.

16 SEPTEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

Affixing the panels Installation of the panels is quick and easy. Simply dry measure and cut the panels to the size required, removing the tongue from the panel that will be placed in the corner if working with tongue and groove panels. Allow 5mm spacing between the shower tray and or bath, and 2mm between the panel and surrounding wall surface. Apply Mermaid’s Complete adhesive to the back of the panels – you will need one 290ml cartridge for each 2420 by 1200mm panel. Complete colour matched sealant cartridges will be used for sealing, seaming and jointing. Apply the panels to the wall on the correct spacers, applying the inner corner first for tongue and groove panels, and press firmly to affix to the wall. Simply apply

Elite range

Mermaid Panels has a diverse range of bathroom panels including its most advanced solution yet, its Elite range – with 28 new designs coming to the range this Autumn. The company’s patented technology enables installers to create completely seamless designs within shower enclosures and even wall-to-wall applications that require no trims or grouting and offer a sophisticated post-formed edge finish.

Complete colour matched sealant to the open groove before repeating the process with the next panel, also ensuring you apply sealant to the open tongue. Use suction lifters to slide each panel into place, squeezing out any excess sealant between the tongue and groove. Then, you will need to apply sealant between panels and again, wipe off any excess immediately with a white spirit. Repeat the above steps before filling all areas where panels meet with Mermaid Complete colour matched sealant. With that, the installation is complete and the panels should have a rest period of 24 hours to bond before any accessories are fitted.

Aftercare After completing the job, be sure to talk your customer through the correct aftercare procedures. Fortunately, with laminate panels, maintenance is minimal. Simply wipe panels down with a non- abrasive cloth and warm water to clean, ensuring no bleach or chemical products are used. Clean regularly to maintain a great finish. For more information please

BOOST BOILER SALES

Boiler Guide’s Sales Director Mike Mayfield provides some top tips to help boost new boiler sales.

A

successful heating engineer needs to be a multitasker, especially when it comes to running your own business. One essential aspect of any business is selling your service to your customers, showing the value that you offer will win you more work and help grow your business. So let’s take a look at some of the essential components of a successful sales process in the heating industry.

Be quick Things happen fast in this industry – if someone needs a boiler replacement, they do not have the luxury of time – they need heat and hot water asap. Whether someone has contacted you directly, you’ve been given a referral or purchased a lead, you need to speak to them as fast as you can. If you don’t you can be sure that someone else will, reducing your chances of winning the work.

What can you do to improve? ● Make time during the day to make calls

to prospective customers, set aside an amount of time when you can be alone and make those calls. ● Where possible, react to a new enquiry straight away, even if it is just a very quick conversation to arrange a full call at a more convenient time. ● If you don’t get through the first time, leave a voicemail leaving your details. If it’s a mobile number, send a text message introducing yourself and letting them know a time you are available for them to call them back. This shows that you have tried to

contact them quickly and understand the severity of their situation.

Follow up Don’t be shy, it will often take more than one phone call. People are busy and might not be able to take your call. Follow the advice on voicemails and text messages from the previous step and plan your follow up from there.

What can you do to improve?

Where possible, react to a new enquiry straight away, even if it is just a very quick conversation to arrange a full call at a more convenient time.

● Be flexible – Try calling at different

times of the day. If you can’t get them in the morning, try the afternoon or the evening. Keep trying. ● Send an email – A friendly email introducing yourself and your company will boost the customer’s confidence. A lot of people prefer to communicate this way and it’s a great way to find out what the customer needs. You can also send a quote giving you further opportunities to win the job. ● Leave a great impression – Even if you don’t win this job, you may get the next one or a recommendation. A proactive response will not be forgotten by the customer.

As more and more customers search online for the best installers, it’s vital that your business does everything it can to show off what you can do. The best way to do that is by asking customers to leave you a review. While word of mouth is still important, the pandemic has proven that a strong online presence is a must for any ambitious business. A positive review is essentially free advertising for your business and provides added opportunity to get more work. They also give new customers confidence. Being able to read the happy experience of someone with a similar requirement goes a long way to getting you that job. When a customer in your area ‘Googles’ a service that you offer, being high up the rankings gives you a great chance at earning the work. Customer reviews help with this and keeps your business relevant in the eyes of search engines. BUSINESS & TRAINING

I’LL GIVE YOU A Quoting for work is a common task for all plumbers – but could you be doing it better? Aaron Mcleish, a specialist accountant for the plumbing and heating industry, and author of The Quote Handbook, explains more.

Quote…

M

y name is Aaron Mcleish, and I am a specialist accountant for the plumbing and heating industry. As the world locked down in early 2020, and many committed to a life in their pyjamas, (I'm not suggesting anyone in the plumbing and heating industry did that!) I decided to get to work on resolving a problem which I had witnessed time and time again with my clients. It was time to end the cycle of poor quotes. You may not realise it, but there could well be room for improvements with your quotations. The reason many people struggle with quotations, estimates, prices and proposals is because no-one teaches it. School doesn’t teach us how to write a quote, what needs to be included, how it should be structured for maximum results, or what the best practice is. Likewise, no-one tells you, “if you do it this way, you’ll get x% more sales”, or “if you do it this way, people are more likely to buy from you.”

Scan here

The top line Let’s talk about your top line in business. This is often referred to as sales, turnover, revenue or income. Whatever you want to call it, it is one of the most important figures in your business. By having consistent revenue coming into the business, this then allows you to satisfy all of your expenditure and also to draw down on the profits in your business and put them into your own pocket.

If you’ve got no income coming in, you’re going to struggle to satisfy your expenditure and to have a comfortable lifestyle. Therefore, respect, time and consideration needs to be given to your top line. As is the case with most plumbing and heating businesses, revenue comes from quoting for jobs. You’ll quote for a job, the job will then get accepted, the quote will then convert into a sales invoice, you would then get paid on that sales invoice. My point is, the quote is the very first part of a sale, of your income, the first stage of getting cash in the bank. Therefore, you need to get your quote right.

Get your quote right If you don’t have your quoting system right, you won’t have a business. That’s why I created ‘The Quote Handbook - Essential Steps to Building the Perfect Boiler Quote’. The Quote Handbook focuses on the quoting system within your business. It breaks down what needs to go into a perfect quote into twelve sections:

S4 SEPTEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

The front page Restate the pain/problem Take the pain away Your bespoke quote Describe their options Set out everything you do State your prices Offer options Warranties, guarantees and promises FAQs T&Cs Call to action

The Quote Handbook takes you on a journey from receiving the initial phone call from the customer to scope out a boiler replacement, handling the initial inquiry, answering questions of the customer when you attend their premises and then using all that information to produce the perfect quote. Everything after that is down to the business to fulfil the job in hand. The Quote Handbook – Essential Steps to Building the Perfect Boiler Quote is available on Amazon as a paperback, Kindle and Audible version. www.rdr.link/pc011

BUSINESS & TRAINING

THE DIGITAL WORLD: TRAINING TO BOOST BUSINESS

For any busy installer, investing in training can be a big commitment – particularly when trying to fit it in around busy schedules. But with online learning becoming more readily available, Colin Yearp, Head of Training at ADEY explains how installers can use this opportunity to invest in personal development and grow their business to produce more revenue.

I

nvesting in training can help installers boost the rewards for their business but it can also be time-consuming task and challenging whilst trying to manage a busy working schedule, especially for those who are self-employed. Not only can training increase product and best standards knowledge, but it can also support installers in becoming experienced and confident when recommending and upselling products or service to their customers. What’s more, by completing regular training courses it can also aid installers stay up to date with best practices as well as trends to remain competitive within the market and therefore boost business.

The importance of getting water treatment right, whether you are working on new install or an existing boiler, will have an impact on the efficiency and long-term health of the heating system. Even though the pandemic has changed our everyday lives, there are still plenty of opportunities for installers to take advantage of. In replacement of face-to-face training centres, many businesses have continued to offer self-paced learning modules online, meaning that installers can still continue to develop their skills but in their own time in order to work around their busy work schedules without needing to take the day off work.

The importance of best practices Designed to raise industry standards across the heating system, not just the boiler, the latest changes to BS7593:2019 recommend the inclusion of an inline filter to protect against the damaging effects of sludge. Benchmark’s app-based registration system is now available for installers to input information and puts more emphasis on including water treatment details during the process. Again, this gives installers further evidence to show customers that the work being carried out will improve the overall running of the heating system as well as complying with required standards. One of the ways in which installers can improve knowledge on this area, is by undertaking regular training courses, which will in turn give them confidence to suggest the correct advice to their customers and boost loyalty and therefore business.

The digital world The importance of getting water treatment

45

Adey’s trainers have a combined 45 years’ experience in the industry right, whether you are working on new install or an existing boiler, will have an impact on the efficiency and long-term health of the heating system. Being able to demonstrate and show the end user why a course of action is being recommend while testing at the end of a job is further testament to a job well done and will go a long way to reinforcing professionalism and customer loyalty. This is where a training course can help installers ensure they are demonstrating best practices for their customers. For example, ADEY offer an e-learning module

on an introduction to water treatment and best practices which aims to help installers develop and test their knowledge. Each installer who passes the course will also receive an ADEY certification, enhancing the service they can offer to customers and further helping to protect the UK’s heating systems. In addition, the ADEY Training Academy has now gone digital and offers a series of free webinars on topics such as MagnaCleanse to Domestic Filters which help installers continue their development remotely and is hosted by trainers with a combined 45 years’ experience in the industry. Face to face training is back open in training centres across the country and available to book via the ADEY website. The new Kiistone App has been designed to help tradespeople run their businesses more effectively and minimise payment disputes.

AN END TO PAYMENT PROBLEMS? A Lancashire-based tech start-up has launched a new mobile and desktop app designed to help tradespeople run their businesses more effectively and put an end to payment disputes. The brainchild of CEO Tim Mullock, the Kiistone app – which was launched in April 2021 – is designed to financially protect both tradespeople and customers, who agree job specifications and budgets via the app. Payment is then protected and held independently until both parties are satisfied that the job has been completed as agreed. Tim Mullock, said: “My experience of being a British tradesperson over the last twenty years has shown me both the good and the not so good that the industry has to offer, and the biggest issue that we’ve still got today is a lack of trust between the

customer and the trade. “While it’s undeniable that there are some cowboys out there, professional tradespeople often find themselves tarred with the same brush, which doesn’t make for good customer relationships.”

Professional solution

Project management

Tim continued: “On the flipside, tradespeople can experience lack of understanding from customers or unrealistic expectations, which can lead to disputes over final invoices. The Kiistone app has been designed to provide a professional solution for both parties, providing absolute clarity to customers at all stages of the project and ensuring fair payment for the job delivered.”

As well as the Escrow solution, the app provides further functions to help tradespeople manage their projects, diary, cashflow, admin and communication. It also links to the Kiistone Community website, which provides guidance and support for trade businesses and homeowners. Tim noted: “The aim of the app in the long term is to build a community of tradespeople who take pride in their profession and who understand the value for everyone in modernising the industry. Kiistone’s ultimate goal is to be a gamechanger for the industry, to reinstate pride and quality in British trades, and to represent a new benchmark in professional standards.”

My experience of being a British tradesperson over the last twenty years has shown me both the good and the not so good that the industry has to offer, and the biggest issue that we’ve still got today is a lack of trust between the customer and the trade. BUSINESS & TRAINING

Don’t hold back

Griff Thomas from GTEC, the Yorkshire based training centre specialising in renewables, urges installers to take up training in renewable technologies and make the most of the business opportunities that lie ahead.

I

n some respects, reluctance is understandable. A recent report by the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) highlighted the impact of poorly administered schemes such as the Green Homes Grant on the take up of training; such negativity mustn’t be allowed to stall progress. Installers need to embrace the fact that the UK is embarking on a green revolution and with a little bit of training, they’re in a great position to deliver the goods, as well as benefit from a huge opportunity for business growth. The government could certainly do more to implement and fund installer training programmes to support its ambitious policies, but for forward-thinking engineers, there are some great opportunities out there, right now. The government has promised 600,000 heat pump installations a year by 2028. At the moment we don’t have nearly enough installers to meet this target – there are only around 1,000 MCS certified heat pump installers. Compare that to the to 130,000 Gas Safe registered installers and you begin to see the urgency.

Installers need to embrace the fact that the UK is embarking on a green revolution and with a little bit of training, they’re in a great position to deliver the goods. Growing consumer interest Until recently, consumers have had very little choice when it comes to their heating. The vast majority are fixed up to the gas mains, others run their heating systems on oil. However, there are now viable alternatives to fossil fuels. End users are waking up to the fact that through a combination of new heating technologies and insulating materials their homes can significantly reduce environmental impact. Low-carbon heating isn’t just for new-builds either – there are 27 million older homes and two million commercial

S10 SEPTEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

and industrial buildings to retrofit. This is a staggering figure and without a significant increase in the number of skilled tradespeople we won’t be able to deliver the governments’ legally binding aims. In order to meet demand, installers need to be trained, qualified and accredited in a variety of low-carbon technologies to specify and fit heating solutions appropriate to the 21st century. Looking back at the EAC’s report there’s a real fear that the current lack of trained and accredited tradespeople will jeopardise the heat pump installations the government has committed to.

028_PHPI_SEPT21_Layout 1 06/08/2021 09:45 Page S11

Future proof your business We read every day in the press and on social media, scare-mongering stories about the death of gas, so for engineers with an eye on the future there’s never been a better time to up-skill. Most experienced installers can train in the installation of heat pumps in a week. Surely that’s a worthwhile investment in terms of time and money to future-proof a career? Our heat pump course is a Level 3 qualification designed in association with the Awarding Body, LCL Awards. It covers all you need to know about the installation, commissioning and maintenance of Air Source Heat pumps, and enables candidates, on successful completion, to register with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).

HEATING BEGINS AT HOME One of GTEC’s recent Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) learners, Darren Jones, runs a plumbing and heating company based in Kirkby Lonsdale. Darren was impressed with heat pump technology, and on completion of the course, he installed an ASHP at home. Darren said: “I’ve been interested in renewables for a while now. A lot of our customers live in the countryside and aren’t connected to the grid. At the moment they rely on oil, which is messy, smelly and unpredictable in terms of pricing. People are increasingly interested in greener options for heating; it’s really just a case of educating them – letting them know about the alternatives. “I couldn’t very well extol the virtues of renewables whilst running my home on a gas boiler, so I decided to put my money where my mouth is and install an ASHP at home. I honestly haven’t looked back. It’s brilliant – and so much more interesting than a gas boiler. The fact that I’m now running my home on renewables makes it a lot easier to persuade my customers to go green – and we’ve never been busier!”

BUSINESS & TRAINING

FUTUREPROOF YOUR BUSINESS

P

reparing your business for what lies ahead relies on having a skilled workforce, which means continually investing in yourself and your team. To do this, ongoing training for already qualified engineers and developing new apprentice talent is vital. This is not only important in the short term, but will need to happen if the UK is to successfully transition to a low carbon future.

The training challenge Growing the numbers of skilled professionals to close the skills gap, no matter where in your career journey you are, is key. As an experienced installer, you can do this by hiring an apprentice and passing on valuable skills and knowledge. It is well worth considering an apprentice as with a little investment, you will have an extra pair of hands to support you while they are training. Over time, you can also help to grow them to assist your individual business needs. As part of the Baxi Apprentice scheme, three apprentices have recently been chosen to have their college fees paid in full, as well as receive added extras such as branded workwear, personal protective equipment (PPE), product and specialist training, work experience with a Baxi engineer and a Baxi factory tour. Although the Baxi Apprentice scheme is now closed, for installers who are interested in hiring an apprentice there is plenty of support and funding available. In

Hiring an apprentice and investing in ongoing training for already qualified engineers in your team is a great way to help futureproof your business, explains Steve Owen, National Training Manager at Baxi. fact, you may only need to pay 5% towards the cost of upskilling and assessing your apprentice, and the government will pay the rest (95%) up to the funding band maximum. They’ll pay it directly to the training provider. You could also be eligible for extra funding depending on both you and your apprentice’s circumstances. It isn’t just apprentices who stand to gain from training; as a qualified installer you can also take advantage of manufacturer led sessions. At Baxi, we offer a variety of different courses designed to increase confidence and skill across our products and also covering specialist areas including multimeter training, boiler diagnostics, combi boiler appreciation and system wiring and controls.

Sustainable future As different technologies like Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) start to become more prevalent and future fuels such as hydrogen continue to be explored as an alternative to natural gas, training to be able to work with these solutions is

S12 SEPTEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

important. Baxi is committed to driving product development and training across these fields. It is expected that the switch to hydrogen will require extra modules to be added on to the existing gas engineering courses. However, the good news is that testing and development surrounding hydrogen boilers shows how a hydrogen boiler should work in a similar way to existing gas boilers, with comparable installation and maintenance. ASHPs will likely be installed more in new build housing from 2025 due to the Future Homes Standard. However, for well insulated properties an ASHP or a hybrid ASHP and gas boiler combined, could also be explored by homeowners looking to upgrade their heating systems. This shows potential for installers and their apprentices to be aware of these options and how they could be an area of business expansion in the future. By providing added-value information, help and resources to heating engineers, Baxi endeavours to keep installers up to date with all of the latest industry news, legislation and product insights. This includes providing training and support to installers and their apprentices to promote best practice and competency for now and the future. TRAINING ROUND UP

GAS COURSES REMAIN POPULAR FOR NEW LEARNERS Online learning portal, Access Training UK, has revealed there was a 29% increase in applicants to its trade courses in 2020, including a 14% increase in female applicants. Whilst training to be an electrician has been the most popular avenue over the last year with a 38% increase in trainees at Access Training UK, it is closely followed by gas engineer courses (29%) and plumber courses (24%). Jamie Jefferies, CEO of Access Training UK, commented: “Construction and manual trades were some of the UK’s strongest sectors during the pandemic. There is also a huge skill shortage within the industry. Therefore, it is no surprise to see an increase in the number of graduates across the board, with the industry appealing to those looking for employment, but also those looking for a career change.” www.rdr.link/pc019

AQUALISA UNVEILS ‘AQUASTORM’ TRAINING VEHICLE Aqualisa has announced an education and training initiative to support trade partners in communicating the advantages of smart showering. he Mainsboost Flomate MBF 60-1-15 is designed for low occupancy properties with one bathroom and fits neatly within a standard 500mm kitchen base unit. Mainsboost Flomate MBF 60 can be connected directly to the incoming mains and will deliver up to 16 litres/minute flow at 3.2 bar pressure to multiple outlets within the property, up to the pre-set cut-in limit of the 60 litre pressure vessel, at which time the system will deliver 12 litres/minute until demand ends and the pressure vessel recharges. This product comes with a three year warranty, is fully WRAS approved, engineered with robust brass construction, and is continuously rated. Working in quiet operation, this product is ideal for properties looking to boost their pressure whilst not disrupting day to day life. Flow testing kit Looking to fit a Mainsboost product? When specifying a Mainsboost system, it is very important to check the incoming pressure and flow rate. This can be carried out by using the Stuart Turner pressure and flow testing kit.

The test kit has been designed to connect to outside taps or 15mm and 22mm pipework. Connect to outside tap, close isolation valve, open outside tap – this will record your standing (static) pressure, open isolation valve to run the water, this will record your flow rate through the flow meter and will also record your dynamic pressure. By carrying out this exercise, it will determine whether or not you need a pump for your Mainsboost system. If your standing (static) pressure is below 2 bar, we would recommend using a Mainsboost charger pump. However, if you have 2 bar or more then no pump is required.

TREATMENT ROOM

Central Heating treatments are a vital part of the upkeep and maintenance of water-based central heating systems. Andrew Scanlon, Applications Manager from Sika Everbuild, addresses how professional plumbers can effectively use the arsenal of water treatment solutions available to meet the needs of current and future regulations. Making things crystal clear

Y

ou’ll no doubt be familiar with BS 7593:2019. At the moment it’s a code of practice within Part L of the Building Regulations which covers the cleaning and maintenance of central heating systems. This code is likely to become mandatory under the Future Homes Standard, putting greater emphasis on maintaining new and existing systems than ever before. When it comes to central heating, as professionals you’ll know all too well that one of the most common causes for boiler breakdowns can be due to the accumulation of limescale, sludge, bacteria, mould, rust and other debris within the system. By treating and preventing further build-up from occurring you will not only save your customers the cost of an expensive boiler replacement, but the central heating system as a whole will run more efficiently. It’ll also waste less energy, making it better for both the environment and your customers’ pockets.

Test to determine the cause Signs that a build-up of sludge, debris or other hidden nasties including mould or limescale could be the root cause of an

a cleaner with an inbuilt biocide will kill mould, bacteria and fungus spores and stop them building up in the pipes. inefficient heating system are typically things like noisy radiators, systems not heating up properly, or the failure of an element like the pump or heat exchanger. Detection and testing are the first steps to determining the best course of action. Everbuild’s new complete central heating treatment system includes a Universal Protector Test which is designed to quickly test the water quality and the level of inhibitors present in the system. This allows engineers to determine whether further action is needed without taking the system apart.

When it comes to clearing a blockage in the system, depending on what exactly is causing the build-up, a specialist cleaning solution may be required. For example, a cleaner with an inbuilt biocide will kill mould, bacteria and fungus spores and stop them building up in the pipes. Where limescale is a problem opting for a product with pH buffering capabilities, such as the P30 Protector from Everbuild, will ensure that the water pH level remains within the acceptable range of between 8.0 and 8.5 at all times. As well as preventing the build-up of limescale, such products are also able to stop internal corrosion and hydrogen gassing. Older central heating systems which may have heavier build-ups – whether that’s sludge, debris, limescale, rust, oil, grease or a combination of these – can pose a particular challenge to engineers to clear. A product with a special high-strength formulation, such as Everbuild’s P24 Power Cleaner, will quickly flush out any build-up from within the system. Ensuring central heating systems are kept clean and clear of sludge, limescale and other debris including algae and mould reduces energy wastage and carbon emissions in line with the requirements of the Future Homes Standard. By opting for the right central heating treatment solution for each system now – it won’t cost the earth for you or your customers in the future. Boiler essentials There is so much more to the humble gas boiler than meets the eye, particularly given the advances in key components, flues and heating control technology, as Sean Keleher, National Technical Manager at Navien, explains.

D

omestic gas boiler sales are showing no signs of slowing down, with recent HHIC figures revealing 2021 looks set to become a record year for sales. Indeed, the organisation’s recently published findings showed the 12-month average sales figure increasing by 14%. This is clearly great news for heating manufacturers, but as the marketplace becomes crowded with gas boilers vying for homeowners’ attention, the challenge remains to produce units that adhere to legislative requirements, while still satisfying the needs of installers and end users alike. As a result, the latest condensing gas boilers have been designed to save energy and money in equal measure – in both new build and refurb applications. From an end user perspective, increased awareness of sustainability has led to homeowners becoming keen to embrace efficient, energy-saving products, which are also easy to programme and use. While the manner in which gas boilers physically operate is unlikely to change, incremental gains are still being achieved in terms of performance and controllability.

20M

Navien can offer flue lengths up to 20m

So, let’s consider the essentials to look for when selecting a condensing gas boiler. A stainless steel heat exchanger is recognised as the most reliable and efficient component at the heart of any unit which, when coupled with an IPX5 rating (high water resistance inside and outside), ensures a boiler can be fitted almost anywhere in a property, for total flexibility. The modulation ratio should also be considered for fully optimised heating and hot water output, with a turndown ratio of 10:1 highly recommended.

36 SEPTEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

Control compatibility and capability Another key factor is controllability, to ensure complete yet simple management of heating and hot water temperatures. Modern gas boilers should have a digital or touchscreen control, providing engineers with accurate information, with the most advanced units capable of displaying details about how efficient the unit is performing. Installers should look for boilers that are “Open Therm” ready, as these will be compatible with the latest control technology and smart devices, allowing for easy integration with minimum levels of disruption and cost implications for end users. Furthermore, fitting a gas boiler alongside the latest heating controls can further improve a system’s efficiency. Controls have grown in prominence over the years, particularly as end users become increasingly more aware of advances in heating technology and their energy-saving credentials. This has seen more homeowners requesting or asking installers about the latest ‘smart’ devices and, with Boiler Plus legislation requiring minimum standards, it is a great opportunity to maximise an installation. So, in addition to having controls integrated into the boiler itself, advances in wireless technology

036_PHPI_SEPT21_Layout 1 06/08/2021 09:59 Page 37

have resulted in separate devices being produced that can be added to a heating system straight out of the box. However, the features and benefits of these controls will vary between manufacturers. Now, should customers have been tempted by some cleverly-marketed third party devices, installers should advise against using these and recommend using the same brand of controls as the boiler itself. Why? Well, both the controller and boiler will have been designed to communicate with one another (and indeed, the rest of the heating system) using the same digital programming ‘language’; this is essential in terms of ensuring accuracy, reliability and overall energy efficiency. This is certainly evident when a system utilises sophisticated, bespoke protocols, as third-party products would not be compatible.

Smart choice Manufacturers’ own control units, such as Navien’s innovative Smart Plus, can improve energy efficiency, raising a boiler’s overall ErP rating to ‘A+’. These controls also provide a number of advanced and energy-saving functions, such as weather compensation. This aids efficiency by providing a supplementary line of external system data, for more accurate heating adjustments. So, on a warm sunny day, the boiler will adjust the system flow temperature according to external conditions, in turn reducing energy consumption – and costs. One of the most appealing aspects of modern smart controls is their compatibility with smartphone technology, via an app. This provides end users with remote

(or off) depending how near an occupant is to their property. This can even be set up across multiple handsets, allowing all members of the same household to enjoy their preferred indoor temperature.

Going to great flue lengths

Controls have grown in prominence over the years, particularly as end users become increasingly more aware of advances in heating technology and their energy-saving credentials. access to their heating and hot water system, allowing them to program or turn it on or off at the touch of a button. Plus, they can still receive any notifications or error messages, as well as change the heating and hot water if required. Smartphone compatibility also offers features such as geofencing, where a person’s location dictates how the heating system operates, with the boiler turning on

In order to achieve optimum performance, it is important that a gas boiler is complemented by a suitable choice of fluing options. Not only is the flue essential in terms of safety, it also has an impact on a heating system’s overall efficiency; as a result, installers should assess what flue options are offered by boiler manufacturers. The design and diameter of a flue determine its maximum allowable length. Here at Navien, we utilise the Ø60/100 plastic concentric flue system on our NCB-Ce gas boilers. These flues can be installed either horizontally (through the wall) or vertically (through the roof); however, the distance by which they can be extended varies, as the total flue lengths are actually determined by the ability of the boiler itself. So, some flues will only extend to around 6-8m, whereas we can offer lengths up to 20m for superior flexibility. So, the humble gas boiler has evolved significantly over the years, with manufacturers taking great strides to improve the overall performance, reliability and energy efficiency of their products. By combining high quality components with the latest fluing and control systems, these stalwarts remain set to provide homes with heating and hot water for years to come. HYBRID OPTIONS Hamid Salimi, Product Specialist – Heating and Renewables at Daikin UK, speaks to PHPI about Hybrid heat pumps.

Q

What is a hybrid heat pump system and how does it differ from a standard heating system? A hybrid heat pump combines renewable air-to-water heat pump technology with a gas condensing boiler, to ensure the highest efficiency. Hybrid heat pump systems are typically designed to select the most efficient mode of operation, choosing between heat pump, gas boiler and hybrid modes. Some advanced hybrid systems are equipped with the smart programming to automatically determine the most economically and energy efficient combination based on energy prices, outdoor temperatures and indoor heat capacity.

Q

How does a hybrid heat pump system help improve energy efficiency? Advanced hybrid systems are equipped with the smart programming to automatically determine the most economically and energy efficient combination based on energy prices, outdoor temperatures and indoor heat capacity. For example, different fuels such as gas and electricity can be set for the hybrid system via the user interface. The hybrid heat pump system will then determine and run in “Ecological Mode” by using the fuel with the lower primary energy factor. Also, when working in heat pump mode, the system is powered by renewable energy extracted from the air and can achieve up to A++ energy efficiency.

Q

Can a hybrid heat pump be installed alongside the existing boiler in a property? Yes, some heat pumps can be installed alongside the existing boiler. The 2nd generation of Daikin Altherma Hybrid or Daikin Altherma Hybrid 2 for example, can be paired with the existing boiler (or a boiler from another manufacturer) as a 'bi-valent' system so the user can switch between the heat pump or the boiler, but not run both in hybrid operation. Again, by using the smart programming, this heat pump can determine the outdoor temperature and then decide when to switch between the heat pump and the boiler modes to ensure high efficiency and guaranteed comfort.

Q

Do installers need F-Gas qualification?

For the refrigerant based split hybrid system, an installer will require F-Gas qualification. For the monobloc hybrid system, no F-Gas qualifications are required. For example, the 2nd generation

38 SEPTEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

of Daikin Altherma Hybrid or Daikin Altherma Hybrid 2 has a monobloc configuration where the refrigerant gas is safely contained within a sealed circuit. The installed will only need to fit the water connections and therefore they will not require F-Gas qualification.

Q

What kind of heat emitters can be used with a hybrid heat pump system. Can existing radiators and pipework be used? Whilst in gas boiler mode, hybrid systems can provide high leaving water temperatures e.g. 80˚C and therefore these systems can be used for the existing radiators.

Q

What kinds of controls are required – can hybrid systems be operated from a smartphone? Yes, Hybrid systems can be operated remotely from a smart phone. For more details www.rdr.link/pc022

REHAU SMART CONTROLS HANDLE HEATING & COOLING Rehau has upgraded its smart heating control to be able to transfer between heating and cooling. The move allows developers and contractors to provide efficient heating and cooling from a single solution. The NEA Smart 2.0 uses a series of algorithms to regulate temperature. These algorithms allow the device to learn occupant habits and data from multiple sensors in floors and walls, creating optimal conditions for occupants. Taking the present values for indoors and outdoors temperatures and their trends as well as the learnt data, the intelligent algorithm in the smart control automates heating and cooling so end users do not need to control it themselves. Consequently the required temperature is reached more smoothly without putting maximum demand on the property’s heating or cooling source, including fan coil systems and heat pumps. In order to maintain good air quality between heating and cooling, the system uses a sensor to ensure the dew point in the space is not exceeded, and can control a dehumidifier to keep moisture levels down. Franz Huelle, Head of Technical at REHAU Building Solutions says: “We are pleased to be able to offer a complete solution for heating and cooling both residential and commercial buildings. With air quality and moisture control key concerns within the building services industry, we have developed the technology to ensure these variables are constantly controlled. As conditions change, the NEA Smart 2.0 system can continuously learn and update settings to ensure the desired temperature is efficiently met without causing condensation or large energy bills.” www.rdr.link/pc025

HVAC & Pressurisation specialist Mikrofill has introduced a range of multi-pump cold water boosters. The Velocity cold water booster sets are WRAS approved and feature stainless steel multistage pumps mounted on a Powder Coated steel base plate. The sets are controlled by the company’s advanced variable speed control panel. Different configurations are available offering maximum flow rates ranging from 4.4m3/h (75l/min) – 29m3/h (480l/min) (Per Pump) and maximum head pressures ranging from 1.0–16bar. The range includes sets in both horizontal and vertical pump configuration, with standard two or three pump models. All sets include a pressure vessel, ranging from 8–48 litres, with the option to include anti-vibration mounting feet. www.rdr.link/pc026

CLIPACORE CONDENSEMATE New from core drilling specialists Clipacore is Condensemate – an all-in-one kit designed to make the upgrading of an overflow pipe to 32mm waste pipe (or larger) easier. The kit comprises of a 1/2" drill adaptor for the arbor, a long threaded adaptor for the use of dual cores, quick release clip, compression spring and a 300mm long 22mm diamond core bit. The 300mm long core bit simply inserts into the existing 22–25mm hole after the pipe is fully removed. Once the outer core bit has scarred the wall, the inner long core bit serving as a guide can be removed by hand. The design ensures consistently symmetrical holes, eliminating the risk of core bits skidding off course and potentially damaging the wall. The inner spring loaded core bit removes the need for tools, thus improving workflow efficiency. The 22mm core bit can also be used on its own (with the company’s smaller quick release core adaptor) to prevent blowing the brick face or render wall. The three XL140 free standing in-line units were installed by Medway Heating Limited in early 2021 and now supply heating and hot water to the whole Firwood site. Commenting on the installation, Mark Owen, Senior Project Manager at Medway Heating Ltd, said: “The XL140 units were chosen for a number of reasons, but one of the most important was their high levels of sustainability and 90% efficiency. This was definitely the perfect example to showcase what ATAG Commercial does best, and as I’ve previously used the company’s boilers before, I know I can rely on them to provide great aftersales support.” With options for wall mounted in-line, free standing in-line and back-to-back arrangements, the ATAG XL140 boiler can be fitted in a wide range of modular installations. All units are equipped with connections for flue gas and air inlet (parallel tubes), allowing for both open and room sealed arrangements. The XL Series from ATAG Commercial is available in outputs of 70, 110 and 140kW.

WIRQUIN

CLIPACORE

NEO AIR

CONDENSEMATE

The Wirquin Neo Air ‘Air System’ function acts as an integrated ventapipe air admittance valve (AAV) to prevent the rise of bad odour’s and noise in the pipes. When a vacuum is created in the pipes, it sucks in the air, but also the water contained in the trap which then causes noise and lets out bad smells. Thanks to Wirquin NEO AIR and its integrated ventapipe air admittance valve (AAV), the pipes are naturally ventilated.
