Season’s greetings No, you haven’t missed Christmas, and there is still time to get to the shops to buy presents – or like most people these days, order them all online. No, the season in question here is the heating season. Often a period of high demand for plumbers and heating engineers, this year’s heating season will hopefully feel a little more ‘normal’ than the previous one – which took place during lockdowns and required face coverings, social distancing and Covid-safe measures. Of course, keeping people safe will, once again, be equally important this year as well. This month also marks the return of Quality Plumber Week, running from the 11th to 17th October. Organised annually by the Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors (APHC) it aims to raise awareness of the skills within the plumbing and heating industry whilst shining a spotlight on the many plumbing businesses that play a vital part in our communities. John Thompson, Chief Executive Officer at APHC, comments: “There are thousands of excellent plumbers… who provide exceptional service and advice to homes and businesses. On behalf of not only our members, but also every hardworking plumber we want to recognise the skills and work they do.” You can find out more about Quality Plumber Week, which includes a prize draw being organised by the APHC, by using www.rdr.link/pd001 In this issue PHPI features our annual Domestic Boilers Supplement. In it, among other things, you’ll find a round-up of some of the latest boilers on the market, advice on water treatment, some thoughts on the future of controls and an update on the roll out of the Benchmark App. Please turn to page S1. Autumn is certainly a busy time of year for the sector – but it could also be the first opportunity in a long time to visit a trade show and engage face-to-face with product manufacturers and other trade professionals. One popular regional event visited by many plumbers is Toolfair, which returns this Autumn, taking place in Wales in October before heading to the popular Sandown Park venue in Surrey in November. You can find out more about these events by using www.rdr.link/pd002 But whether you visit a show, take part in Quality Plumber Week, or just keep your head down delivering professional installations day-in, day-out – stay safe and Season’s greetings!

HYDROGEN STRATEGY UNVEILED The decarbonisation of heat is a hot topic for the sector as the industry looks to transition to low carbon solutions to provide heating and hot water. One of the options under consideration is hydrogen, which could be introduced into the mains network, at first supplementing natural gas, with the possibility of fully replacing it over time.
A
key document indicating the government’s intentions – the UK’s Hydrogen Strategy – was unveiled in mid-August, and widely welcomed by manufacturers in the sector. Mark Wilkins, Technologies and Training Director at Vaillant commented: “The introduction of up to 20% hydrogen gas into the wider natural gas network is a positive Mark Wilkins, Vaillant first step to begin the UK’s hydrogen journey and this strategy provides key milestones to build the network progressively up to 100% hydrogen. Currently, there are 26 million homes in the UK, so during this decade trials and testing are fundamental to achieve our decarbonisation goals. The 2030s will begin wider roll outs and further trials but as outlined in the strategy the hydrogen transition may take several decades. “At Vaillant we fully support hydrogen as a heating solution and are developing hydrogen-ready appliances ahead of the Government’s strategic decision on the role of hydrogen for home heating to be taken by 2026.” Carl Arntzen, Worcester Bosch CEO, said: “We are delighted to see the publication of the much awaited Hydrogen Strategy paper. It is clear from today’s announcement that the trials and research in this area have helped open the route for a hydrogen future, to which we are excited to keep exploring. “With that in mind, we are optimistic that we will see hydrogen-ready boilers, such as the one from Worcester Bosch, feature prominently in this Autumn’s Heat and Buildings Strategy particularly following the recent price-promise made by the four leading boiler manufacturers.” (For more on the ‘price-promise’ www.rdr.link/pd004)

TAP’S THE WAY TO DO IT Richard Bateman, Product Marketing Manager at RWC, discusses the factors to consider when installing and maintaining an outside tap.
C
hoosing the location of the tap is the first – and quite often the most crucial – step when successfully installing an outdoor tap. Installers first have to consider the customer’s requirements as well as the accessibility to the water mains, as this will give the most reliable and consistent source of water to the tap. When feeding directly off the mains isn’t a viable option, feeding off cold-water storage tanks can provide an alternative solution. However, plumbers should note this can drain existing water out of the system faster than it's being replaced and temporarily leave the house without running water. Once the location of the tap has been decided, plumbing professionals should try to follow best practice and install it a metre high off the ground to allow for convenient space and access to the tap once in place. The customer will need to be able to fill up buckets, connect up hose reels and even wash down pets after muddy walks, which should all be taken into consideration when choosing the correct height of the tap. On top of this, installers will benefit from the 1-metre clearance when it comes around to servicing the tap as the extra room will make adding additional fittings and
connectors underneath an easier task. For convenient installation indoors, best practice is to connect the pipe under the kitchen sink. Not only is there likely access to a cold-water pipe connected straight to the water mains, but there’s usually enough room to feed the pipework without having to worry about its concealment once installed.
Installation tips Installing the tap from this point can be a straightforward job, but some helpful tips could greatly benefit any level of installer to help avoid unwanted leaks and damage.

10 OCTOBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
For most plumbers, it’s expected that when locating the cold pipe it will usually be found on the right hand side. But as we all know in the plumbing industry, the correct practice can sometimes be forgotten. To double-check and avoid connecting a hot pipe to the outdoor tap, see if the pipe is cold to touch. While it might seem like a simple check, this extra precaution could save having to restart the installation again and spending extra time on the job. Additionally, before carrying out any work on the cold pipe, always ensure the mains water is fully shut off and not just isolated at the tap. Even the most experienced installer can accidentally tee off before the stop tap and cause an unwanted leak, so always make that final check before beginning work on the pipe. Added to this, when installing the outdoor tap, be sure to still include an isolation valve, such as RWC’s Floreg Valve, which allows for the easy maintenance of specific sections of the system, without having to shut off or drain the pipework entirely. This will cut the tap off from the mains water supply and allow the customer or installer to change the tap if required. Not only does this make future work on the installation simpler, it also causes less disruption to the home’s water

whilst work is being carried out. Once you are ready to begin drilling into the wall, check for any cabling that might be lurking beneath layers of plaster running to a nearby dishwasher or washing machine, and drill a hole 22mm wide. This will allow for a 15mm pipe to come through the wall and surrounding conduit to be added for protection, leaving enough room for expansion as the pipe’s temperature changes.
Case Studies RWC has a range of Case Studies – for both residential and commercial applications – available on its website demonstrating how its range of solutions have been used in specific applications. For more details please www.rdr.link/pd005
Isolate any dangers For those who have not installed an outside tap before, it’s imperative plumbers make sure that it is fitted with a double check valve to prevent backflow and consequent water contamination. As it’s a legal requirement to install a double-check valve, taps will usually come with one as standard but it’s worth checking the specific tap chosen for the job to ensure you install it safely following legal requirements. For taps without a standard double-check valve included, RWC’s Floguard Double Check Valves are a compact, lightweight solution, ideal for all class 3 contamination risks as per The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. To isolate potential dangers further, installers should ensure the valve is fitted after the tee fitting before it goes through
the wall to the outside tap. Once installed the water mains can be turned back on provided the isolation valve has been fitted correctly, reducing the amount of time the home is without a water supply.
Double-check the pressure Water from the mains supply will typically sit between 3-4 bars of pressure which is too high for most irrigation systems, usually only needing around 1.5 bar. If used with mains pressure, irrigation systems can be much more costly to run, resulting in less efficiency in water distribution and even cause a burst in the system. To get around this, installers should make sure Pressure Reducing Valves (PRVs) are installed alongside isolation valves to better regulate the
When installing the outdoor tap, be sure to still include an isolation valve, such as RWC’s Floreg Valve, which allows for the easy maintenance of specific sections of the system, without having to shut off or drain the pipework entirely.
pressure released from the tap. Not only will this reduce the amount of water needed for the system to work effectively, but this will also save the customer hefty water bills over the summer months. To help ensure PRVs can be installed in tight spaces, RWC offer the 312 Compact Series PRVs, suitable for domestic applications. All working components of the valve are contained within one cartridge, allowing for space saving efficiencies, while the recent integration of the product with RWC’s JG Speedfit push-fit technology adds onto the fast install and maintenance properties of this PRV.
Maintaining your installation Once installed, the customer should be informed how to properly maintain the upkeep of the outside tap to avoid future damage or poor performance. Precautionary steps such as wrapping the tap with an insulated covering to prevent the tap from freezing will help increase the lifespan of the system. For those not planning to use the tap over the winter period, installers should recommend homeowners turn the isolation valve on and remove the tap entirely to prevent any damage to the system. To ensure water doesn’t freeze within the pipe, plumbers should also consider installing a drain off valve, such as RWC’s SharkBite Draincock Valve with Street End, alongside the isolation valve, to drain any water left in the pipes, hence preventing it from freezing over the winter months. This can be supplemented with pipe insulation which can be fitted in unheated areas of the house to avoid any potential damage to the pipework from the cold. LIGHT COMMERCIAL
EXPLORE NEW OPPORTUNITIES Considering a move into commercial installations? Vaillant answers some common questions to help you get started.
W
hen it comes to ways installers can grow their business, diversifying into offering light commercial installations can often be overlooked. However, with domestic installers already possessing many of the transferable skills and knowledge, light-commercial installations can present great opportunities for new revenue streams. Here, Mark Wilkins, Technologies and Training Director at Vaillant answers some of the most frequently asked questions from installers on light commercial installations, and the opportunities these can present.
I have domestic gas qualifications, can I fit a light commercial boiler?
Q
It is a common misconception that domestic installers can only fit boilers up to 44kW on a domestic Gas Safe qualification. In fact, with a domestic Gas Safe qualification, installers can fit boilers up to 70kW net heat input and work on gas piping up to 35mm in diameter, providing the installation volume doesn’t exceed 0.035m3. Typically, domestic boilers range between 12kW and up to around 44kW, with anything above this being classed as light commercial. This is due to the assumption that larger output boilers are only installed in non-residential premises, such as offices, schools or doctors’ surgeries. However, light commercial boilers can be installed in any property type providing it meets the heat requirement. So, adding light commercial boilers to widen an installers’ installation portfolio is one way to diversify and grow your business.
Do I need any specific training or qualifications to fit light commercial boilers?
Q
As with any technology, correct training, and a full understanding of the heating system in question is of paramount importance. Although taking on light commercial system installations under 70kW does not technically require any specific training or additional Gas Safe qualifications, it is strongly recommended that installers attend training courses to familiarise themselves with the range of commercial boilers available from Vaillant. Light commercial heating systems do require more system components such as low-loss headers and plate heat exchangers so these training courses will help to fully understand the components required for this type of heating system and installation.
Q
What is a low-loss header and when do I need to fit one?
A low-loss header maintains the correct flow of water through the boiler and acts as a ‘neutral point’ in the system which is
14 OCTOBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
essential when connecting to multiple circuits with different flow rates. During operation, the boiler circulates within its own flow and return circuit. The system circuit pumps circulate their own independent flow only meeting in the low loss header as they pass. When used in conjunction with Vaillant controls, a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor is used to ensure a constant water temperature is supplied by the boiler. When fitted to new systems, a low-loss header can be used to ensure correct water circulation and operation of the boiler. And without one, the system pumps would cause water circulation issues within the boiler.
What about a plate-heat exchanger – why and when are these required?
Q
It’s not always possible to guarantee the cleanliness and water quality of existing systems with old pipework and radiators. A plate heat exchanger fully separates the system water from the boiler circuit and prevents all potential debris and contamination from entering the boiler. It’s the perfect solution to maximise boiler lifetime and protect the capital investment. Once commissioned, and with the correct water treatment, the water within the boiler circuit will maintain its condition from the day it’s installed, guaranteeing the integrity of the boiler throughout its life. Plate heat exchangers are also ideally suited to open vented systems where the boiler remains sealed and the system open vented, avoiding high conversion costs. Fitting a plate heat exchanger also allows for easier maintenance. For

example, when servicing the system, the boiler can be drained down separately to the system, if required.
What controls are recommended for light commercial installations?
Q
For single boiler applications up to two heating zones, the solution is the same as for domestic applications, meaning any Vaillant eBUS connected control will be compatible. The difference begins with more than two zones, a VRC 700 or sensoCOMFORT together with a VR71 wiring centre will give a weather
compensated solution for up to three mixed heating circuits and one domestic hot water (DHW) circuit. For more than three heating circuits, an additional VR70 wiring centre giving two more (five heating circuits in total) is needed.
Q
What are the opportunities available to installers?
Light-commercial installations present an opportunity for installers to diversify and grow their revenue streams. Due to the nature of light-commercial installations and the specialist projects these can be involved in, the level of preparation both prior and during installation can often be more extensive. This means installers can often benefit from more revenue through fewer installs, which is particularly helpful
during times when domestic boiler servicing and maintenance work is less frequent. While many domestic installers already have the transferable skillset to offer small commercial installations, fewer installers operate within this space, meaning there is often less competition for work too. Actively seeking out new ways to enhance a business through upskilling is a proven route to identifying new opportunities and revenue streams, and with the skills to do so already within their portfolio, offering light commercial installations can be a great place to start for many installers. LIGHT COMMERCIAL
TAKE A STEP TO THE
LIGHT Thinking of taking on some light commercial work, but not sure where to start? Maria Howley, Technical Product Trainer at Bristan, outlines some of the solutions that can help make your next commercial plumbing job straightforward.
C
ommercial work can not only help installers diversify income, it can open up a whole host of exciting new job opportunities. The key difference between commercial and domestic plumbing is the size and scale of the job. Commercial plumbing jobs take place in environments that cater for lots of people, such as public washrooms or leisure centre shower rooms, and often involve more complex plumbing systems. However, they still require the same skillset, use the same materials, and fulfil the same basic function. It’s just about picking the right products for the job.
More for less
It’s helpful to choose products designed with easy installation and maintenance in mind
Commercial jobs will most likely be in places where there is a high footfall, therefore the sheer volume of water products you’ll have to install is much higher. It’s helpful to choose products designed with easy installation and maintenance in mind, so that every job can be carried out quickly and efficiently. For example, Bristan’s Wallmount 12 bar shower fixing kit aids installation and maintenance with its built-in isolation. The two front-facing isolation valves allow you to isolate the water supply with the turn of two grub screws, rather than switching if off at the mains. This limits the risk of damage to the bar shower during the installation process. Plus, Wallmount 12 sits in front of the tiling on the pipework, meaning that it can limit the changes to existing pipework, which is particularly beneficial when working with complex plumbing systems.
Bristan also has a range of other showering products, suitable for commercial projects where fast installation is important, such as electric showers. The Joy Care electric shower has been designed for user safety, but also for easy installation and maintenance. It’s well suited as a replacement shower, due to multiple cable and entry points for easier compatibility. It’s also easy to clean and maintain, with an external filter helping to maintain performance. Kettering Borough Council who has a portfolio of more than 3,000 properties recently fitted the Joy Care shower and commented: “We have had good feedback from our installers and tenants. Our installers tell us the products are simple and easy to fit, which helps us to turn around replacement quickly.”

The test of time
Commercial bathroom products are used more frequently than their domestic counterparts, so it’s essential they’re reliable and robust. At Bristan, all commercial products are designed to stand the test of time through rigorous testing in our UKAS accredited, WRAS approved in-house testing facility. Our showers are tested for the equivalent of 130 years use; while our taps undergo high pressure testing so they’re able to handle 25 times standard water pressures.
Safety first Safety is a top priority when fitting out any bathroom, but particularly in commercial installations where a variety of rules and regulations must be satisfied. At Bristan, we’ve designed a range of showers, engineered for peace of mind. Our bar showers feature intelligent Safe Touch technology, designed to encase the hot water supply within the cold in the valve of the shower body. This means the exterior of the shower valve is always cool to touch, even when the hot water is running. This reduces the risk of scalding. Another point to consider in commercial jobs is the risk of Legionella. The newly upgraded OPAC TMV3 shower supports infection control measures with its engineered patented built-in thermal flush mechanism, designed for anti-Legionella regimes. DOMESTIC BOILERS SUPPLEMENT
AT YOUR
SERVICE
When it comes to maintaining domestic boilers, Neil Mattock, Marketing Director and Head of Training at Vokèra by Riello, explains why it’s important for heating professionals to ensure that their customers understand the difference between a basic safety check and a full boiler service.
W
e know that some consumers are driven purely by price when buying products and services and will invariably be tempted by the cheapest option. However, when it comes to boiler servicing and maintenance this could be a false economy. When comparing quotes, it is important for the consumer to understand what they are being charged for. For example, the lowest quote they receive may just be for what could be classified as a safety check rather than a full service. To help them make a true comparison, we advise heating engineers to make the difference clear to their customers and explain the possible consequences of incomplete servicing. In severe cases this could curtail the life of the appliance and reduce its reliability – poor or inadequate servicing could even invalidate the manufacturers’ warranty, which could be very costly for the end-user.
Safety check vs full service As the name implies, a safety check can ensure the safety of the user and the appliance and covers a comprehensive series of inspections and checks. Among these are a gas rate check and, if it is a room-sealed boiler, completing an analysis of oxygen content in the combustion box. When dealing with a sealed system, it’s a matter of relieving pressure in the water circuit and checking the expansion vessel pressure charge is correct. On an open vented system, the feed and expansion cistern should be visited to check if the ball valve is operating correctly, that there is sufficient water in the cistern and that gaps between water level, overflow outlet and ball valve outlet are correct.
These are just some of the safety checks that are recommended and extra measures should be completed when conducting a full service. Also, a ‘to manufacturer’s instructions’ service on differing boiler types, the amount of work necessary to dismantle one model of appliance to comply with the instructions can be more involved than another. These include removal of the burner door/cover and physical cleaning of heat exchanger flueways. If the appliance has a separate secondary heat exchanger, the access cover should be removed and cleaned inside. Insulation panels/shields should be inspected, and door seals replaced as required by the manufacturer when reassembling. Where the appliance has a separate secondary heat exchanger, the access cover should be removed and cleaned inside. If inhibitors are required in the system water then a sample may be taken and more added if necessary. The final procedure is to bleed any vent points around the system.
Training support In order to maintain the safety and reliability of the appliance, it is essential
that servicing and maintenance procedures are carried out in accordance with the relevant British Safety standards and the manufacturer’s instructions. With this in mind, Vokèra has recently expanded its programme of training webinars with a Service and Maintenance slot. Each month we present an overview of the procedure followed by a live strip-down of a boiler heat exchanger. As there are several heat exchanger types we are highlighting a different one each month. Since introducing these new webinars we’ve received really positive feedback from participants. We believe there are three main reasons for their success: firstly, watching a process, rather than just reading it in a manual, makes it easier to imitate; secondly, seeing the correct tools or required parts and the order of work makes life a lot easier (and the job faster); and lastly, some of the reservations that can accompany working on an unfamiliar or ‘not your current favourite’ boiler are removed.
Service reminder To indicate what level of servicing is required, most current Vokèra boilers include an integrated service reminder/timer based upon the boiler’s true condensing operation. This handy function will alert the user or engineer whether an annual or full service is required – the boiler operates as normal but the display or status LEDs will remain illuminated to draw attention to the fact, in a manner similar to that in a modern motor vehicle. NAVIEN OFFERS THE COMPLETE GAS BOILER PACKAGE
D
Gas boilers are the main source of heating and hot water in millions of UK homes – and they continue to be fitted in new build and refurbishment projects nationwide. Sean Keleher, National Technical Manager at Navien, explains how the latest models have advanced.
emand for gas boilers, in particular, is showing no signs of slowing down; indeed, the industry has seen an 18.7% increase in volume year-on-year, according to the Energy & Utilities Alliance (EUA).* As the fourth-largest manufacturer of boilers in the world, Navien certainly knows what installers should be looking for when selecting a new unit. One of the first considerations should be the display, as this can make or break how user-friendly the boiler is. All models in Navien’s NCB range utilise a modern, touch screen display, making it easy to view information on flow and return temperatures, as well as a digital system water pressure reading. This touch screen display also allows installers to test some components such as the fan, pump and combi diverter valve, while an extra test for the gas venturi is available. Every Navien boiler also boasts a stainless steel heat exchanger for superb long-term durability, with models benefiting from a turndown ratio of 10:1. These quiet running units use 60/100mm plastic flues in industry-leading lengths up to 21m and are supplied with a free LPG conversion kit in every boiler box. In addition to low NOx emissions (Class 6), all NCB combi boilers are water resistant to an IPX5 rating for total flexibility, allowing them to be installed internally or externally. The range is also “OpenTherm” ready, enabling instant access with the latest heating control technology.
Controllability remains key
Navien NCB gas boiler
As installers are probably now well aware, technological advances and the evolution of the Internet of Things (IoT) has led to modern boilers being supplied with the latest smart controls straight out of the box. Alternatively, they can easily be upgraded with a manufacturer’s smart controller, such
S2 OCTOBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
as the innovative ‘Smart Plus’ from Navien. Utilising a system with these controls can deliver overall levels of efficiency up to 98%, so they are definitely worth considering as part of any project! Another ‘smart’ development is geofencing functionality, which sees the heating turn on or off automatically, depending on the end user’s proximity to their home, as relayed via their smartphone. There is also the option to add multiple users, ensuring every member of a household can benefit from optimum levels of comfort. Controls are also a requirement under Boiler Plus. In addition to new installations requiring a minimum efficiency of 92%, the legislation stipulates one of four additional measures must be present in order for a boiler to be fitted; one of these options is a smart controller – as long as it features automation and optimisation functions, such as geofencing.
020_PHPI_OCT21_Layout 1 06/09/2021 15:28 Page S3
Another possibility is weather compensation, which some may argue is the most effective means of maximising a heating system’s energy efficiency, as it allows a property to warm up slowly in advance of impending weather conditions. So, in the event of snow or sub-zero temperatures, there are no peaks and troughs during the boiler’s heating cycle, while operating efficiency remains unaffected. Gas boilers aren’t just responsible for central heating, they also help ensure energy efficient and user-friendly delivery of hot water. Utilising units with a built-in pre-heat function (such as those in Navien’s NCB range) ensures taps and shower outlets do not have to wait too long for hot water, while avoiding wastage.
Service and support Having quick access to service and support is essential for any installer’s business. For this reason, Navien has strengthened its technical support offering over the last six months, adding more engineers to its in-house service team to provide dedicated assistance to its customers throughout the UK and Ireland. As a result, homeowners, heating engineers and merchants can all benefit from Navien’s renowned expertise, thanks to the company deploying technical engineers in Scotland and the Midlands, as well as the north, south east and south west of England. This is in addition to a fleet of service agents who are able to attend to customers in need within 48 hours. A knowledgeable, smart support mechanism offers installers, in particular, a wealth of benefits – including the capacity to provide assistance as and when required. Navien is proud to offer comprehensive levels of customer support; from technical back-up through to arranging a service, the team is always able to give advice online or over the phone. Technical engineers are then available to attend onsite should further assistance be required. Furthermore, installers have many different technologies to deal with these days, from the components that make up the boiler, through to the associated accessories, such as flues and control systems. With the latter advancing quicker than ever, it is imperative engineers and end users can liaise with experts quickly in the event of any queries or technical issues.
All models in Navien’s NCB range utilise a modern, touch screen display Undertaking a manufacturer’s training course will certainly help installers to learning all there is to know about a gas boiler. A standard session will provide essential information, such as understanding fault codes, explaining common parts and parameters, as well as expert advice on how to conduct servicing to the required standard. Quality and reliability remain at the heart of everything Navien does. Each boiler is made at the company’s state-of-the-art facility in Seotan, South Korea, which is
responsible for producing 2 million units per year – making it the largest in the world. Before leaving the factory, every boiler undergoes a thorough, two-stage testing procedure, including a specialised robotised process that carries out 55 quality checks per second. In addition, each unit receives a full working test by an operative, who completes a further 250 quality checks, ensuring every boiler is of the highest standard. So, with gas boilers set to remain at the heart of the heating agenda, installers should look to manufacturers such as Navien for the complete package, providing the latest, high-quality products, as well as dedicated technical support. Doing so will enable them to provide their customers with high levels of performance, longevity and efficiency – as well as substantial savings on energy bills. * Source: Energy and Utilities Alliance – EUA Economic Report June 2021

REMOTE MONITORING – THE BENEFITS FOR INSTALLERS
With the heating season fast approaching and homeowners flicking their boilers on fully for the first time in months, comes the inevitable breakdown and service calls to installers. Tom Hood, UK Sales Director at ADEY, looks at the benefit of recommending the latest smart filters to save time and spot issues before they arise.
I
t may sound a little bit like the plot of the film Minority Report, only here tackling boiler breakdowns rather than future crimes, but ongoing heating system remote monitoring opens the door to preventing boiler problems before they happen. For heating installers the benefits go further too, helping boost revenue streams, provide increased peace of mind for customers and providing the opportunity to deliver a proactive service.
Most installers will understand what sludge is and how it forms from corrosion inside of radiators, pipes, and soldered joints. As well as performance, sludge build-up can also affect a system’s energy efficiency as the system struggles to transfer heat, radiators and pipes are blocked, and the flow of water is restricted. Meaning the bill payer ends up with higher energy bills than they would have if the heating system’s water was cleaner. However, being able to offer remote monitoring of the filter takes this to the next level in terms of time saving and real-time information. It gives installers an informed

view of heating system health without needing to enter the property, so a problem can be fixed before it causes a system breakdown, or at the very least means installers can arrive prepared ahead of a call out.
Monitoring the system It also opens the opportunity to create a new revenue stream and increase customer loyalty too. Monitoring the presence and build-up of sludge in the system using smart filter technology installers can offer a remote monitoring service to customers, which gives system visibility without the need to arrange a property visit first, speeding up the process and ensuring prevention of issues before they become that well-known inconvenient breakdown problem. It also goes a long way to reinforce client relationships with year-round heating system surveillance, that adds real value to them. Promoting preventative maintenance and remote monitoring offers tangible business benefits for installers willing to take up the opportunity. It allows installers to keep a close eye on the level of sludge in the heating system before they step foot in the property. Remote monitoring opens the door to new, ongoing revenue streams for installers. By charging a small monthly or annual fee to remotely monitor a heating system at the time of filter installation, it can result in added and welcome profits to complement more traditional income generation. To make offering this type of service simple, installers can use TradeHelp’s ‘Service Plan’ tool – available through ADEY’s ProClub membership – to sign-up customers to monthly service plans, access complete terms and conditions, and manage the end-to-end process of providing and administering payments on just one interface without the need to draw up separate Ts and Cs or deal with different software. This reduces the administration that comes with selling a service while building a loyal and trusted relationship with customers.
Long-term advantages There are many ways installers can talk to their customers about the long-term advantages remote monitoring of their heating system can offer. When installing a new boiler, the dangers of system sludge and poor water quality can be highlighted, and remote monitoring could be an excellent way to protect what is an expensive household investment. Likewise, when undertaking boiler services, benefits such as year-round system protection against breakdowns between services, as well as the ability to spread the cost of a monitoring plan, can be promoted appropriately. Even distress visits when unexpected breakdowns have occurred can be an ideal opportunity to discuss the idea and cost of ongoing remote monitoring to help reduce the risk of future inconvenient system failures.

RADIATORS – MORE OPTIONS THAN EVER With more sizes, shapes and colours than ever, Chris Harvey, Head of Marketing at Stelrad Radiator Group, explores the range of radiators that can be used on domestic heating systems.
I
nstallers have more options than ever when it comes to selecting radiators to go with their new boiler installations these days. Stelrad has a wide range of radiators with a huge selection of styles, and a significant range of sizes, most from stock and now, most are available in up to 36 colours – with a number of coloured radiators available from stock, with delivery within 72 hours. Whilst the good old standards, the Compact and the Elite, are the best-selling radiators, there has been a marked increase in the number of premium panel radiators and decorative and designer radiators being specified and ordered through the merchants in the past twelve months.
Consumer demand This is in part due to the growing popularity of the Vita and Softline series with a full range of designs, but it’s also got a lot to do with customers wanting an input to the radiator designs they have in their homes – and a growing interest in the TV
S8 OCTOBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
programmes that allow the man and woman in the street inside celebrities homes – and they like what they see! In addition there are a number of trends that are growing in the UK heating sector including the awareness of special application radiators that offer specific options for particular situations – for example the growing range of heavy duty radiators for situations where a more robust radiator is required. Stelrad has extended its range to include Deco HD as well as Planar flat fronted HD options – and the huge increase in vertical radiators now available – ideal for including larger radiators on smaller wall footprints, in corridors and on landings, as well as in kitchens and bathrooms where wall space is at a premium.
Low temperature Sales of our low surface temperature – LST – range of radiators is also on the rise. The ‘safe to touch’ options of attractive radiators, in equally attractive casings, ensure the
026_PHPI_OCT21_Layout 1 06/09/2021 15:37 Page S9
outside of the casing never exceeds 43 degrees Celsius to the touch. These are popular especially where the very young, the elderly or the vulnerable are living or coming into contact with them in their homes or buildings where they congregate. The Stelrad LST casings cover the emitter and all the pipework to ensure that people are safe should they fall close to the radiator or become wedged up against one.
Full colour Coloured radiators are proving very popular, with Stelrad increasing the number of coloured radiators available from stock – particularly for radiators heading for bathrooms and kitchens, but far more for the rest of the home too. Traditionally, radiators have been available in any colour so long as they were white! Now there are a number of radiators available in anthracite grey from stock, which are proving hugely popular. If you want a radiator in bright yellow, or orange, you can have them, but you will have to wait a little while longer for those. But the more brightly coloured radiators are proving popular with interior designers and for corporate buildings, where the radiators are being selected to match or contrast with corporate colour schemes for example. We’re seeing a sizeable switch away from the standard panel radiator options towards the designer and decorative options. The trend started quite slowly a few years ago, but in the past twelve months has accelerated, with installers offering their customers a selection of radiators in the home – perhaps sticking with the Compact designs for the spare rooms and the rooms that you don’t see so much, but stepping up the design content in the main rooms that visitors see – the main living room, the kitchen, bathrooms and cloakrooms and hallways, and of course the master bedroom and en-suite if there is one in the home.
Three panels We’ve seen a major increase in sales of K3 radiators in the UK too this year – preparing for the arrival of renewable heating systems. A K3 has three panels and three sets of fins to allow 50% more heat output than from a K2 of the same
size. These have also been popular for homes with poorer levels of insulation or rooms that are difficult to heat or which suffer from condensation. These are exciting times for radiators and whilst we see a lot of information about underfloor heating, radiators still take over 90% of the heat emitting options in the UK and are still very popular with installers and homeowners alike. Even with the renewable heating options that are coming on stream we see radiators taking the lions share of that market – we’re offering a range of larger radiators to meet the specific demands of heat pump driven systems, but we anticipate a high demand for replacement radiators with traditional boiler driven heating systems for the next fifteen to twenty years at least. The success of radiators continues to reflect five key drivers – availability, reliability, ease of installation, breadth of choice and reasonable pricing – and installers are used to working with radiators and feel comfortable with them. As importantly, homeowners and tenants feel comfortable with radiators – they understand them and recognise the reliability factor with them. Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Communication and Product Management at Worcester Bosch, discusses the evolution of heating controls.
THE FUTURE OF CONTROLS AND MONITORING
H
eating controls have come a long way compared to the systems of 10-15 years ago. With the continuing increase in packaged boiler sales such as combi boilers, controls will continue to be sold in their millions. This sales demand mixed with new technologies to meet this demand will help revolutionise heating controls even further over time. Additionally, remote boiler monitoring is a rising tool that will help customers quickly and easily identify problems with the boiler and be able to solve these without the hassle of waiting around for engineers to come and inspect the property.
Year to date In July of this year, we saw the millionth boiler sale for the year to date, and 80% of that number were combi boilers. In most
cases controllers are sold with a combi boiler, particularly in England where Boiler Plus is a requirement, where you must fit one of four extra energy saving measures to the boiler. As three of those options are controllers, generally, the more combi boilers that get sold, the more controllers get sold.
piece of European legislation called the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. We know that TRVs are a great addition to saving energy. Increasingly systems include them somewhere but not necessarily on every radiator. It would make significant energy savings if it was a requirement to fit TRV’s when replacing the boiler.
Introducing TRVs In the coming months we are going to start to see more thermostatic radiator valves sales. The market is already healthy for TRVs but soon it will become mandatory to fit them on every radiator bar the one where the room thermostat is situated every time you fit a replacement boiler. This requirement is being enforced in the Building Regulations in England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland and puts into local law a
S10 OCTOBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Current state of play We believe that around 75% of homes in the UK already have thermostatic radiator valves, so there is an additional 25% of properties left to tackle. Fitting a boiler is quite often straight swap. However, adding TRV’s will be extra items to fit once the 2020 Building Regulations are mandatory. I believe this will be a good thing in a
028_PHPI_OCT21_Layout 1 08/09/2021 15:56 Page S11
way as TRVs are a great way of saving energy and therefore reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Nowadays smart TRVs are available. They are electronically operated through a radio frequency signal to a controller, which allows you to very easily only heat specific rooms, particularly useful if you are working from home and only using one or two rooms. This is a good move as both electronic and smart TRVs will start to become more appealing, which means we will start to see an increase in smart, or internet enabled controls. Currently there are several on the market. The major benefit is that you can operate them remotely, from anywhere in the world, if you have access to a smart device.
A note on monitoring Moving away from home controls, there are also developing solutions for remote monitoring – mainly in social housing. For example, Vericon Systems offer tools to be able to monitor their boilers virtually.
technology is a huge driving factor when it comes to the evolution of control systems. The system allows communication with a wide range of boiler manufacturer’s appliances. It also acts as a gateway for other devices which can highlight potential issues or prevent future faults completely. Virtual monitoring gives relevant customers that have multiple properties the flexibility to monitor their tenant’s boiler from anywhere, making it an affordable and reliable compliance and safety tool. Additional benefits include heating temperature settings, low pressure warnings and interrupted gas supply sensing.
What’s to come? Due to the success of various digital schemes, including both TRVs and remote
monitoring and the impression they have made, relevant government departments have been considering recommending them as a vehicle to approve any potential future funding that might be available for heating technologies. Presently there is the Renewable Heat Incentive and grant funding available for certain technologies, such as heat pumps or solar thermal. Moving forward, it is increasingly likely that initiatives will set the precedent for future remote monitoring systems. In summary, technology is a huge driving factor when it comes to the evolution of control systems. When looking back at controls sold between 10-15 years ago, these systems were basic mechanical time clocks and mechanical room thermostats. There is no comparison between these analogue devices and the smart electronic controls available today. For more details on Worcester Bosch www.rdr.link/pd014

DOMESTIC BOILERS SUPPLEMENT
The Benchmark app was launched earlier this year, digitising the scheme that aims to promote best practice in domestic plumbing and heating installation. Six months on, we caught up with Chris Jessop, Chair of Benchmark Steering Committee, to find out how the launch has gone.
DIGITAL BENCHMARK – AN UPDATE Q
The Benchmark Checklist became digital in March this year. How has the transition away from the paper-based system gone?
The launch of the app has been well received by industry so far. As with any big change, there are learnings to made and actioned along the way, but it is also worth highlighting that this initial launch is very much the first version of the app. Updates are already under way in the background, which will seek to incorporate emerging and alternative heating technologies. Transitioning away from the paper-based Benchmark system is something that is important, not least in keeping pace with the rapid digitalisation across much of the heating and plumbing world. It is a significant change for the industry, which is where it is important that we support heating engineers to adapt. It is heartening that we are already seeing an enthusiastic response to this move away from the more traditional paper and pen system, as the many benefits of doing so become increasingly clear.
Q
What kind of reaction has there been from heating engineers?
Overall, there has been a positive response from those who have incorporated the Benchmark app into their day-to-day work. There is an understanding of how it will create a more streamlined process and
encourage a greater awareness of servicing among homeowners – which can serve as an additional revenue stream for plumbing and heating engineers. As is the case with any new digital platform, there have been challenges, and areas of functionality that need to be adjusted to enhance the user experience. This is where the feedback from the installer network has been, and continues to be, invaluable in shaping the future of the app.
Q
There are two apps – one for installers and one for homeowners. What kind of take-up has there been for each? Since the installer app has launched, the uptake has been good, and it continues to grow. The homeowner app is close to completion – it is currently being tested and is planned to be launched in the coming months.
It will serve as a kind of ‘boiler passport’ for consumers, providing access to their own boiler history and engineer details, raising general awareness along the way. The homeowner app will help to generate more registrations, as well as offer a friendly reminder when a customer’s service is due.
Q
Are you planning any amendments or improvements to the app? Work is already underway on improvements and updates to the app, which are predominantly based on feedback from the installer network, as well as the manufacturers who have supported the venture thus far. This is alongside the planned additions as part of the next phase of the project, largely centred on introducing a greater range of compatible heating systems. The Benchmark Installer app is very much a live piece of software. We intend to continuously update it as and when required – whether that’s emerging technologies or based upon user feedback. Ultimately, it is there to improve standards across the industry, and help plumbing and heating engineers to meet their busy schedule, ahead of what is sure to be a busy boiler season. TOOLS & TESTING DEVICES
TEST PRACTICE
Jon Bawden, HVAC/R Product Manager at Testo, runs through some of the factors to consider when selecting a flue gas analyser.
T
he flue gas analyser is an essential tool in any boiler or heating engineer’s toolbox, used daily in boiler commissioning and service work. However, unlike many other tools, flue gas analysers require special care and attention to make sure you are getting the most out of your equipment and are producing the most accurate results. It is also important for a heating engineer to make sure they choose the right flue gas analyser for the type of work they are performing. The first thing to consider is the type of work the analyser is going to be used for on a day-to-day basis, this may be primarily testing domestic heating systems all the way up to emissions testing on industrial systems. If you work in domestic heating you may still wish to check that any analyser on your shortlist can cover all your fuel requirements. It is also worth comparing analysers regarding the sensor specifications, as an analyser having a higher CO limit threshold will potentially mean less chance of an inadvertent CO spike either damaging the analyser or causing a period of having to take the unit out into fresh air to try and purge the measurement cells. Typically, the Testo range of analysers aimed at the domestic market have a 4,000PPM CO sensor and offer automatic pump shut-off if this level is achieved, helping the engineer to prevent damage.
Commercial work However, if you are also involved in light commercial boiler servicing then it may be better to look to an analyser that has been designed specifically for this type of work. As an example, Testo includes in its range the testo 300LL analyser which has an

TOOLS & TESTING DEVICES
automatic dilution system to allow the analyser to cope with potential high CO measurement from a badly out of adjustment commercial system. Whereas most ‘domestic’ level analysers will have potential for damage to the CO measurement cell at high CO readings, the 300LL can quite easily cope with values as high as 30,000ppm due to this dilution system. Another added benefit is the fact that as the measurement cells in testo 300LL are designed to cope with commercial sector work they have a longer expected lifespan of five years.
Sampling probe Another aspect that should be considered when choosing a flue gas analyser would be the sampling probe, it is important to compare the probes to ensure you choose one that is robust enough to suit your requirements. Some manufacturers, such as Testo, use a locking connector to ensure gas tightness and fully integrate the flue thermocouple connection making for a simpler and more secure overall connection. Again, for the commercial sector the 300LL offers flexibility with its modular style sampling probe that can be swapped out for different styles to suit the application.
Multi-functional Functionality is an additional key attribute to consider when choosing your analyser. Depending on your use you may require a different range of functionality. You may just be looking for something basic to record and measure combustion values, however many analysers offer much more than just flue gas measurement with the ability to measure gas tightness and perform let by tests, as well as measuring flow/return temperatures which can help with overall diagnosis of a heating system. Documenting your readings digitally may also be important to you, ‘Paperless’ recording systems on flue gas analysers allow for easy documentation that can be stored and sent digitally, making your work that much simpler. The testo 300 range provide this and also offer an Android operating system that is directly built into the analyser, offering a flexible interface and direct emailing of reports via connection to Wi-Fi. Finally, when purchasing a flue gas analyser, you will want to consider servicing and maintenance costs. It is essential that your analyser is calibrated
’Paperless’ recording systems on flue gas analysers allow for easy documentation that can be stored and sent digitally annually to ensure the unit is in proper working condition and can provide you with the most accurate and reliable results, so considering long-term servicing costs is key. Testo want to make things as simple as possible so have introduced fixed servicing costs for the entire range of analysers for the first five years of operation covering the service and calibration required, as well as any sensor replacement needed. Additionally, the company can offer an accidental damage cover to cover those unexpected issues that your analyser may encounter during its busy working life. MINIMISING LEGIONELLA RISK Failure to correctly install plumbing and heating systems could create the optimum environment for Legionella bacteria, potentially causing serious harm to end users. Jerry Whiteley, Technical Manager at the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), outlines what installation considerations should be made to minimise this risk in domestic settings and preserve the safety of homeowners.
W
ith 2,010 cases of Legionnaires’ disease recorded among residents from England and Wales between 2017 – 2019, threats to domestic system users are still prevalent. This supports the case for better water safety, as reducing the likelihood of water-borne health risks is crucial. To do so, quality installation is necessary. Initially, taking account of the building structure and layout is key.
The addition of insulation does require considerations in relation to layout, because it is likely to increase the space required for the pipework. For example, a 20mm diameter pipe could become 50mm with insulation.
Oversizing of pipes
Structure and layout The layout of pipes is directly linked to the structure of a building, as the integrity of structural joist could be affected if pipes are installed in the wrong place. As such, it is important to plan installations with the building make-up in mind. One of the major considerations is ensuring heat transfer between pipes, or heat gain in voids, is avoided. Given that Legionella bacteria are dormant below 20˚C and do not survive above 60°C, water between 20-45˚C creates the perfect breeding ground. The optimum temperature range for growth is circa 32˚C to 40˚C, with the bacteria multiplying every 15 minutes. Hot and cold-water pipes should therefore be separated to prevent the cold water being warmed up by heated pipework. If space does not permit this, then insulation can be implemented to minimise heat transfer between pipes in close proximity. Alternatively, the design may require a rethink.
Pipe insulation Where heating or hot water systems are located in the roof space, pipes are susceptible to changes in the weather
Ensuring a regular flow of water is therefore a key way to minimise the risk of Legionnaires’ disease. and outside temperature. Cold water storage systems specifically could be affected by solar heat gain. To combat this, cold water pipes must be insulated to ensure the temperature does not rise to between 20-45˚C. Conversely, water pipes will be liable to freezing in the winter months. However, the general rule is to keep cold water cold and hot water hot. So, in line with water regulations, pipes and cisterns must be fully insulated and covered with a firm lid. Insulating heating pipes also helps to prevent heat dissipation through floors or ceiling voids. If heat is lost, then homeowners may be subject to increased fuel bills.
42 OCTOBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Another factor that needs to be well thought-through is the size and capacity of pipes because errors could cause impact on the flow of water. Limescale in domestic systems can be home to Legionella bacteria if water in the pipework and components isn’t regularly replenished. This is why correctly sizing water pipes is so important. By installing a pipe that is larger than necessary, or connecting to existing pipework that becomes oversized, the flow of water may not flush the entirety of the pipe’s interior, meaning Legionella or bio films will not be removed from the system. Ensuring a regular flow of water is therefore a key way to minimise the risk of Legionnaires’ disease. This is also why a ‘dead leg’ of pipe should be avoided.
Other considerations Hot water stored between 55˚C and 60˚C to minimise Legionella bacteria could cause scalding. To avoid this, thermostatic temperature valves are essential in reducing stored water to a controlled temperature when it is discharged from outlets. ELCO DELIVERS UPGRADE TO HOSPITAL
E
LCO Heating Solutions (ELCO) has supplied four TRIGON XXL EVO gas condensing boilers to The Wirral’s Arrowe Park Hospital, as part of an important system upgrade. The new boilers, which replaced old and inefficient models, are supplying heating and hot water to several areas of the hospital, including the maternity wards. Two TRIGON XXL EVO900 and two EVO1100 were specified. The boilers feature a heat exchanger geometry and a water-cooled cold flame burner which limit NOx emissions to 20mg/kWh. The M&E consultants for the project were Wirral-based JD Engineering Ltd. Commenting on the installation, Steve Roberts, Project Manager at JD Engineering Ltd, said: “The installation was relatively straightforward, as the existing flue system was already in place and the plant rooms were centrally located. We have previously fitted other ELCO units at the hospital, so we were confident the boilers would be able to deliver efficient heat distribution throughout the wards. We’ve been really pleased with the end result.”

FOR YORKSHIRE RESIDENTIAL SCHEME
Saniflo Sanicubic macerator pump is breathing a new lease of life into a piece of British heritage – a replica of the famous ship, the Golden Hinde, known for circumventing the globe during the 16th century under the command of British explorer Sir Francis Drake. Sitting in dry dock, the replica ship is now a floating museum and events’ venue near London Bridge. A Sanicubic pump was installed a couple of years ago in the dock beneath the ship to take the waste from two WC cubicles used by visitors and staff. When the team decided to install on-board facilities during the COVID-19 lockdown, another Sanicubic was selected. Located underneath the floorboards in the bow of the ship, it has been positioned to take waste from two new WCS cubicles and basins as well as a new kitchen area in the galley. A dishwasher, sink and icemaker are all plumbed into the Sanicubic thanks to its multiple outlets. Saniflo Head of Marketing and Product Management, Ann Boardman, said: “Thanks to Saniflo, such national treasures can go on providing wonderful experiences to members of the public. There really is a Saniflo solution to suit all manner of quirky public and private establishments, even in places where there is no mains drainage.”
ircoflo’s ClipRail system has been employed for a development of nine dwellings in a rural location in West Yorkshire. R. J. Jones was the installer of the plumbing and heating services throughout the new houses and in the first five houses completed, R. J. Jones’ engineers clipped 12mm pipe runs down across Jablite insulation ready for the flooring contractor to lay a conventional wet screed. They also connected each circuit back to the plot specific manifolds provided as part of the Circoflo package. ClipRail is one of half a dozen UFH solutions offered by Circoflo to facilitate the installation of heating within all types of project, from extensions and refurbishments to apartment and other commercial developments.

REHAU RE: GUARD
LG HYDRO KIT
With water damage proving to be a frequently reported insurance claims, REHAU has unveiled a smart water control system using the latest in ultrasound technology – RE.GUARD. The system monitors the water flow rate, assessing it in real time due to integrated software. It helps to detect burst pipes and drip leaks and shuts off the water supply to mitigate damage. It is installed after the water meter which allows it to also measure water consumption, and has the ability to be manually turned on and off.
LG has launched a new wall mounted hydro kit for the production of hot water in domestic and small commercial/retail/office settings. The hydro kit is an indoor unit that can connect to the company’s Multi V VRF Systems – Multi V 5 and Multi V M, Multi VS and the R32 Multi VS Compact units. The unit utilises wasted heat from cooling and transfers this to the hydro kit for the production of hot water. It comes with a water flow temperature for heating of a maximum of 50°C and cooling temperature of a minimum of 5°C. www.rdr.link/pd052
