Work management The trend towards heating and plumbing products becoming easier to install and more intelligent has been going on for many years. The benefit of this progression is clear: such solutions are often less time consuming and more straightforward to fit and commission – while offering homeowners high calibre energy efficient solutions suited to modern living. Some heating solutions are even incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) to boost their performance – you can read more on page 20. This technological shift is also impacting how plumbers and heating engineers run their businesses. New software tools and digital job management solutions are empowering installers to move from long-used aids, such as computer spreadsheets or the trusty diary, and shift to new ways of working. ‘Red-tape’ and ‘admin’ are often a source of dread for small business owners and many of these new digital solutions promise to take away the hassle. Solutions for quotations, invoicing, book-keeping and staff management, plus ways to rapidly generate and manage certifications and comply with industry requirements are all increasingly available. Importantly, many solutions can be accessed via an app, allowing users to access key functions on the go using a smart device, allowing faster communication with clients and unburdening installers from evenings spent in front of a PC or laptop. While such solutions offer many benefits, such as streamlining business admin and aiding compliance, perhaps the major advantage is in the amount of time they could save a busy tradesperson. Time which could be used to fit in more jobs, or used in other ways, whether that be through more leisure, on training courses learning about the latest technologies or spent with family and friends. However, many in the sector may be less convinced about switching to a new way of working, especially if the same processes have been used in a business for years and have helped it grow and flourish. This is, of course, completely understandable. Embracing the latest digital or ‘IT’ systems can be daunting and may even take up a little more time to begin with when setting everything up. As ever, the choice is up to the individual, but with customers increasingly used to near instant digital notifications across other walks-of-life – think order confirmations, purchases and deliveries – can plumbers and heating engineers afford to be left behind?

News MCS ANNOUNCES REDEVELOPMENT PLANS MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) has published the MCS CEO, outcome of its Ian Rippin latest consultation – unveiling plans for the future development of the scheme. The six-week consultation proposing the redevelopment of the scheme ran from 5th June until 17th July. Over 50% of the respondents were installers of renewable energy and heating technologies. The majority of proposals gained support from respondents across the low-carbon sector including; restructuring the scheme to place consumer protection at its heart and refining MCS Installation Standards to become solely technical requirements. It says, there will be a fundamental shift in how contractors are assessed to gain and maintain MCS certification. MCS CEO, Ian Rippin, said: “This redevelopment will be critical in enabling the growth needed in the low-carbon technology sector, making MCS fit for the future and giving people confidence in home-grown energy.” MCS says it will now proceed with the development of the new scheme, Standards and associated documents and processes. These will be published before the end of 2023. Then, following a period of transition the redeveloped scheme will launch in summer 2024.

WORCESTER BOSCH TO BE INVESTIGATED BY CMA The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced it will investigate whether Worcester Bosch is making confusing or inaccurate claims in the advertising and labelling of its boiler products. The CMA says the investigation will focus on Worcester Bosch’s ‘hydrogen-blend ready’ home boilers and whether the marketing claims may indicate they are more environmentally friendly than they are. The CMA has also written to 12 other businesses that sell ‘hydrogen-blend’ boilers, after reviewing their marketing, to warn them that they could be breaching consumer protection law and to remind them of their legal obligations. George Lusty, Senior Director for Consumer Protection at the CMA, said: “Businesses need to be clear about the environmental credentials of the products they’re selling. This is especially important for heating products like home boilers, which are an expensive and long-term purchase.” Worcester Bosch commented: "We are in receipt of notice of investigation from the CMA and are assisting them in full with provision of information as requested.”

Guidance on
GAS
ViperGas provides a brief insight into an updated procedure for Gas Rating using Metric Gas Meters.
During September 2023, the gas industry revised the procedure for gas rating appliances when measuring using a metric diaphragm or ultrasonic gas meter. The publication of Technical Bulletin 162 - Reduction in gas rate (heat input) test duration for metric gas meters by Gas Safe Register details the recommended change in procedure. This bulletin makes it clear that it does not impose a requirement to adopt a 1-minute measurement period, such as where a computer program or application is used that incorporates a fixed 2-minute period, while demonstrating there are other benefits. Prior to the publication of this bulletin, the measurement of appliances gas rates used to be conducted over a 2-minute period. The procedure using a 2-minute measurement period had previously been in use for in excess of 25 years. Trials were conducted by both British Gas and Gas Safe Register, using a 1-minute measurement period. The trials showed the reduction in time from 2 to 1 minute did not reduce the accuracy of the measurement and in fact in many cases provided a calculated heat input closer to the manufacturers stated figures. The benefits of moving to a 1-minute measurement period were found to be: ● Less likelihood of higher heat input appliances shutting down
during the test having reached temperature ● Reduce the waste of gas used ● Reduced associated emissions ● Reduced waste of water (combi boiler and water heaters) It should be recognised that gas rates are required to be measured when the appliance is operating at its maximum heat input. Registered Gas Engineers can log-in and download TB 162 from the Engineers Section of the Gas Safe Register’s web site.

NEWS REPORT
BMA CONFERENCE
BOLSTERS INDUSTRY RESILIENCE The Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA) recently held its annual Conference, under the theme ‘Resilience’ at Carden Park Hotel, in Chester.
O
pening the conference, CEO of the BMA, Tom Reynolds, said the industry was facing some of its most challenging times, with the compounded effect of Brexit, COVID and last year’s budget, during a period of lower demand. He stated: “While there has been some stabilisation in the last year, our journey back to the position of security and moderation in the UK is still far from over. Yet, in my view, it is a real testament to the mettle of the bathroom manufacturing sector, that we’ve weathered all of those storms admirably.” With an aim to bolster industry resilience, the BMA Conference saw presentations from thought leaders spanning an adventurer through to economist, and professionals from across the bathroom supply chain.
A clear vision Adventurer Bonita Norris, who became the youngest British woman to scale Everest in 2010, spoke on the topic of The Resilient Mindset. She spoke of the importance of a clear vision and how to achieve success by taking small steps. Norris stated we are far more capable than we think, to focus not fret over tasks, and by doing so the goal realises itself.
As part of a ‘Big Debate’, an expert panel explored the challenges and opportunities based upon the question “How resilient are our global value chains in bathroom manufacturing”.
Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back from challenges, it’s about adapting, evolving and thriving in the face of adversity Expert Panel Chaired by CEO of the BMA Tom Reynolds, the panel included experts from across the supply chain from retail to freight, through to manufacturer representatives, and a consumer champion. Speaking about the impact of the COVID pandemic on the supply chain, Paul Crow of Ripples said it was probably the first time he had experienced the industry working well together. However, he said patience started to run out – starting with consumer, through to installers and retailers – as cracks in

stock levels started to appear. While Tom Reynolds highlighted the positive improvement in collaboration between manufacturers and merchants – with the Product Liability Group – creating an understanding through the supply chain. Paul Crow stated service levels expectation, post pandemic, differs from customer to customer, even buying the same bathroom at the same price, and noted his team has to be adaptable to meet individual needs. Consumer champion Jane Hawkes agreed with Crow’s view on personalised service and said service level expectation is higher than ever, adding: “The customer is not king; they just need to think they are.”
Easing pressures Looking ahead, in a presentation answering the question, How resilient is our economy? economist Vicky Pryce highlighted supply chain pressures easing but slowing inflation and little growth. Concluding the conference, president of the BMA Jason Parker said: “Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back from challenges, it’s about adapting, evolving and thriving in the face of adversity. “I’m confident we can overcome any challenge that comes our way.”

SPECIAL REPORT | SMART PUMPS
DRIVING Decarbonisation The collective drive towards net zero and carbon neutrality in the home is one that holds a long road ahead. David Williamson, Sales & Marketing Director at Wilo, outlines the accompanied challenges that plumbing and heating installers can overcome by recognising the potential held by smart pumps.
E
verybody, in some way or another, is aware of the term ‘Net Zero’. The number of people who know exactly what it means or, perhaps more importantly, how to achieve it, provides a different answer – and this is an ongoing challenge faced by heating and plumbing installers. Despite recent pushbacks, however, the Government’s ‘Build Back Greener’ Net Zero strategy has lit the flame for many installers looking to play their part in creating a sustainable future. Figures published by Catapult Energy Systems state that heating accounts for around 37% of total UK carbon emissions, with 13-14% of the total number attributed to space heating in domestic homes. Despite these eye-opening revelations, low market demand for sustainable solutions, in addition to difficulties in accessing funding from government incentives, only makes it harder for installers to establish an argument for further training in new technologies.
£500
The Heat Training Grant provides £500 toward training costs for installers looking to increase their skills.
Homeowners rightly place their trust in the expertise of installers to recommend the most suitable plumbing and heating solutions. This, consequently, makes their role in pushing for sustainable counterparts essential in the collective drive to decarbonising homes throughout the country.
Government (re)incentivisation First and foremost, it’s understandable why recent government announcements might discourage installers from joining the Net Zero effort. The bigger picture, however, is quite the opposite. Owing to both significant installation costs and the lack of installers available to perform the job, many
12 DECEMBER 2023 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
homeowners remain unprepared or are simply unable, due to the unsuitability of their house, to take the step to low carbon heating technology like air source heat pumps. This further illustrates the need for a national retrofit strategy, to ensure that homes throughout the country are compatible to upgrade their heating and plumbing systems in order to improve the UK’s energy security. Despite the initial and understandable concerns attached to the government’s decision to delay the deadline of the gas boiler ban until 2035, the range of schemes and incentives on offer should likely aid the drive-in demand for cleaner alternatives. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme,
012_PHPI_DEC23_Layout 1 06/11/2023 18:56 Page 13
for instance, is designed to support homeowners in England and Wales to make the switch by issuing cash grants of up to £7,500 to replace their old fossil-fuel driven boiler. In a move to show their determination towards achieving Net Zero, the government recently boosted the original maximum offer of £5,000. A fundamental step towards eliminating the barrier of installation costs, the issue of an insufficient number of prepared installers remains prominent. While the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a significant opportunity to driving decarbonisation, the requirement of a quote from an MCS accredited installer – of which there are around only 1,500 as of this spring – undoubtedly makes it harder for homeowners, if suitable, to make the jump to efficient heating.
Homeowners rightly place their trust in the expertise of installers to recommend the most suitable plumbing and heating solutions. It's clear that the existing skills gap among heating and plumbing and installers must be eliminated, requiring the government to work with the industry to provide further support. The Heat Training Grant for heat pumps is a positive, yet small, step to incentivise installers looking to up their skillsets through the grant of £500 toward training costs. Installers will play a pivotal role in overcoming the metaphorical hurdles to achieving Net Zero, but we’d like to see further government assistance to simultaneously reinforce the industry and achieve their own ambitious yearly heat pump installation target of 600,000 by 2028, in addition to the aim of a 78% emissions reduction by 2035. We can start by increasing the number of installers and providing additional incentives to upskill our installers.
Smart solutions In years gone by, many homeowners were unaware of the energy performance of products, appliances and components installed throughout their home – this is changing. Installers are beginning to see a new attitude from their customers looking to understand the energy, and subsequent cost, savings amid the backdrop of soaring bills. Just as homeowners are more conscious than ever about energy consumption, they’re also more able to access the relevant information around smart meters or energy rating labels, for example, than ever before. Such information presented to inquisitive customers should help them to make the smart and sustainable decision. At Wilo, we recognise the plethora of emerging challenges associated with the feared phrase of ‘Net Zero’, and that’s why our pumps are built to help homeowners fully understand the performance of their plumbing and heating systems. The Stratos-PICO, for example, is built to dynamically adapt to how the heating system is used to optimise efficiency throughout the home.
A sustainable future So far, the positive inroads taken towards decarbonisation should be commended. The growing market demand for sustainable heating systems, facilitated by recently enhanced government incentives and the growing number of skilled installers, shows that we’re on the right path to reducing carbon emissions in the home, which are currently reliable for 35% of total energy usage in the UK. Through the installation of smarter circulator pumps like the Stratos-PICO, accompanied by continuous training, we can speed up the drive toward Net Zero by ensuring that sustainability remains at the forefront of an installer’s mind when advising homeowners. By continuing to grow awareness throughout households, the collective effort of maximising energy efficiency while minimising carbon footprint will only grow in support. SPECIAL REPORT | VENTILATION
BREATHE
EASY Paul Williams, Domus Ventilation Product Manager, explains how to maximise ventilation, and energy efficiency using an MVHR system.
T
he cost of living crisis has been with us since 2021. Food and energy – particularly gas – prices have risen markedly, and it’s pretty much impossible to tell for certain if energy prices will come down, not least because wholesale energy prices are affected by global issues, such as the war in Ukraine. The one thing we can say with certainty when it comes to domestic energy prices, is that people across the UK are feeling the pinch. Whilst short term measures can be taken by consumers to save energy at home, to have any real impact, we need to change how we build our homes in the first place, making them more thermally efficient. Changes to Building Regulations have been driving this, making homes more air tight, accompanied by more stringent ventilation requirements to avoid overheating in the summer months and to ensure better quality indoor air.
Building Regulations - Ventilation Changes to Building Regulations ‘Approved Document F, Volume 1: Dwellings’ (ADF1) has considerably increased minimum ventilation rates across all sizes of
MVHR’s role
properties, making whole house mechanical ventilation systems the most proficient option; in the case of larger properties with minimum ventilation rates up 43l/s, they really are the only option. These are to be used in place of the more traditional ventilation methods, such as trickle vents and extractor fans, which are not able to deliver the higher air flow rates required and are also responsible for dissipating around 30% of the energy delivered to buildings the International Energy Agency calculates.
14 DECEMBER 2023 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Whole house mechanical ventilation systems in the form of Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) largely avoids this scenario by using a heat exchanger to recover the heat in stale air from wetrooms and transferring it to the incoming fresh air, which is then filtered and distributed within the home. The Domus Ventilation HRXE MVHR range uses an efficient heat exchanger which is capable of recovering up to 95% of the heat from the waste air stream. Whilst MVHR systems aren’t a replacement for heating systems, they help reduce the heating load required from that system, reducing energy usage. The Centre for Sustainable Energy estimates heating costs can be reduced by around 25%. The cost to run an MVHR system obviously varies depending on the size of the property, building fabric, lifestyle and occupancy, and the energy tariff etc.
Maximising energy efficiency To ensure maximum energy efficiency is gained from an MVHR system, there are certain aspects that you need to take into account.
014_PHPI_DEC23_Layout 1 07/11/2023 13:13 Page 15
Firstly, it’s vital to correctly size the MVHR system for the property, so that it neither under or over ventilates. The former means it won’t deliver the ventilation required under Building Regulations and will be noisy as the fan works overtime to cope. The latter will not be energy efficient. When installing the system, be sure to use good quality ducting that has been designed to work in harmony as part of that system and has been third party tested for end-to-end system performance, as has all Domus Ventilation ducting. For maximum efficiency, I recommend MVHR systems be used with rigid ducting in larger sizes, and that all duct connections are sealed and taped. This will make for low air resistance, which is important for
energy efficiency. Also on the ducting front, be sure to use ducting insulation where the ducting passes through unheated areas and voids, such as loft spaces and on the intake and the exhaust, as required under Building Regulations. When installation is completed, commission the MVHR system accurately. Any mistakes here will result in over or under ventilating, and all the work you have done could be compromised. MVHR systems when in operation need very little attention, but the filters do need to be replaced. We recommend they are inspected every six months and replaced annually to ensure they continue to perform efficiently. In most cases this a very simple task that can be performed by the resident via the front access panel of the MVHR unit. Be sure to explain this to the resident if you are working directly for them. An MVHR system alone isn’t going to mean residents can switch their heating off in the depths of winter, but enabling them
When installing the system, be sure to use good quality ducting that has been designed to work in harmony as part of that system and has been third party tested for end-to-end system performance. to shave up to a quarter off their heating bill will most certainly help now in the cost of living crises and in the future. When you combine this with the improved indoor air quality an MVHR system brings, it’s a winning combination. For more information please www.rdr.link/paz007

- 8-
On the wireless room thermostat, insert 2 x AA batteries into the compartment on the front of the unit.
-2-
On the new Digistat receiver, which will fit onto an existing SCR backplate, remove the existing receiver or controller to find the volt-free wiring of switching contacts.
-9-
When powered up, the receiver will automatically connect with the wireless room thermostat, where you can adjust the schedule settings to meet your customer’s needs.
-3-
The supplied backplate has five terminals across the top; neutral, live, common (terminal 1), normally closed (terminal 2) and normally open (terminal 3). This backplate also has a provision for OpenTherm in the bottom left corner.

- 4-
When wiring to a combi boiler for relay control, firstly take a 3amp fused supply into the boiler, then utilise the other terminals in the boiler to give the backplate a mains supply.
- 5-
If OpenTherm control is desired, connect the OT1 and OT2 terminals in the boiler to the additional OpenTherm terminal block located on the bottom of the backplate. If replacing an existing backplate, the two switch wires should be placed into a separate terminal block to keep them safe and not in an active terminal.
- 10 -

DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS
TAKE CONTROL Gavin Edwards, Training Manager for Navien UK, discusses the importance of smart controls and explores how Navien’s ON AI technology will help improve system efficiency and convenience for installers and homeowners.
H
omeowners have become accustomed to the wealth of benefits that come with owning smart systems. From smart plugs to light switches, we can control our homes at the touch of a button, and in the case of smart thermostats like Navien’s Smart Plus Controller, these can ultimately improve comfort and reduce energy consumption. Not only this, but smart thermostats allow multiple users to manage the control system while the main user is away – something that is particularly useful for people with elderly relatives or landlords with short-term lets.
20 DECEMBER 2023 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Compatible with Navien’s NCB ON Combi Crossover gas boilers, having advanced control over their systems gives homeowners improved energy efficiencies – increasing the boiler’s ErP+ rating up to ‘A+’* when connected to Navien’s Smart Plus Control Pack which provides control for up to three heating zones. Zone control delivers the very latest in home comfort as it allows individual spaces to be heated to a specific temperature, at different times of day, meaning that everyone’s personal preferences can be met. This is ideal for customers with families or in multigenerational homes.
020_PHPI_DEC23_Layout 1 06/11/2023 20:06 Page 21
Self-learning capabilities In addition to its zoning capabilities, the Smart Plus Controller houses a Smart Forecast and Geofencing tool, both of which ensure that the boiler only uses energy when needed. Smart Forecast harnesses data from OpenWeatherMap to respond intuitively to the current local weather conditions to ensure the home remains at a comfortable temperature, without user interaction. Its Geofencing capability allows users to switch the boiler on or off, purely based on their proximity from their home which can be set up to a maximum of 5km – a particularly useful feature when returning home from work. When used with Navien’s NCB500 and NCB700 ON Combi Crossover boilers, Navien’s all-new Smart Plus ON AI controller, which features AI technology, uses Intelligent Mode to pre-heat domestic hot water (DHW). Based on cumulative usage patterns, Intelligent Mode learns the homeowner’s behaviours, and determines when to and when not to pre-heat the water, saving energy, cost and water usage. ON AI features firmware-over-the-air (FOTA) capable of updating the boiler’s built-in AI technology wirelessly to provide the homeowners with a Home Energy Management System (HEMS) report, to give them an analysis of their heating and hot water usage. Crucially, ON AI grows with the homeowner. It learns their routines so that they don’t have to, bringing ease and comfort to their everyday lives.
Smart maintenance As well as creating convenient and energy-efficient routines, AI is now helping to remotely monitor boiler health and even identify faults before the homeowner experiences a breakdown.
ON AI is able to monitor the health of the boiler and will notify the homeowner if something isn’t quite right. Through continuous real-time data monitoring, ON AI is able to monitor the health of the boiler and will notify the homeowner if something isn’t quite right. The App also allows homeowners to run Smart Diagnostics to receive information about potential faults which can be shared with their installer, allowing them to collect any parts required for repair, and helping installers achieve a first-time fix. After servicing, the technology enables installers to run a medium check of the appliance which checks the boiler's components individually to give a live status update.
Currently, Navien’s future technology Multikit can be plugged into an appliance and used with the Multikit app to monitor the boiler's status and data. With Bluetooth built-in, installers can get all of the data delivered wirelessly to the app and pass on live information. Navien has designed the new technology to work in conjunction with its ON range of Combi Crossover boilers, including the NCB500 ON and NCB700 ON. The boiler range features technology to maximise the recirculation of domestic hot water (DHW) to reduce delays in hot water delivery, helping homeowners save energy, water and money. *The Navien NCB500 ON boiler with three Smart Plus controls and the NCB700 ON with one Smart Plus control has an overall rating of ErP A+ (98%)

DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS
Even the simplest solutions can have a massive impact on energy bills, says Gareth Ash, Marketing Communications Manager at Danfoss, as he takes a look at how modern heating controls can help struggling households keep their homes comfortable and affordable.
CONTROL RISING energy costs
A
lmost half (47%) of adults in Great Britain are using less fuel such as gas or electricity in their homes because of the rising cost of living – according to those asked between 20 September and 1 October 2023 as part of the latest ONS Public opinions and social trends bulletin. Among those who pay energy bills, around 4 in 10 (43%) reported that they were very or somewhat difficult to afford. This is the same as during a similar period last year (29 September to 9 October 2022). However, research by the European Building Automation Controls Association (eu.bac) suggests that there are around 500 million radiators wasting energy all over Europe due to outdated and inefficient thermostats. If all of these were replaced with electronic TRVs eu.bac estimates that up to 130TWh of energy per year could be saved – that’s a huge saving for consumers and for the planet in terms of carbon emissions.
Proven technology We know that heating systems use more energy than anything else in the home and that millions of UK households have a gas-fired boiler connected to radiators. Properly specified and installed, modern heating controls, like TRVs, offer a cost-effective energy saving solution for these systems by providing heating only when and where it is needed. These devices are also necessary to ensure that energy savings predicted when insulation is added or a gas boiler is upgraded actually materialise in practice.
And, the return on investment is typically very short, in fact, given the current energy prices the payback time can be a matter of months. TRVs are a readily available technology with a well-established supply chain and their energy saving potential has been proven by independent tests conducted by the University of Salford in 2018. Tests were commissioned by BEAMA Heating Controls (the UK association for manufacturers of controls used in heating and hot water systems) in
22 DECEMBER 2023 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
close co-operation with BRE, who manage the energy performance calculation methodology, SAP. The results showed that a boiler can use 18% less gas when TRVs are used to avoid barely noticeable levels of overheating in rooms not controlled by the central room thermostat. As a guide for domestic heating installers and their customers, if a thermostat is 30 years or older then it’s time to upgrade both the radiator valve and thermostat. If the valve is between 15 and 30 years old or newer then only the thermostat may need changing. Needless to say, changing a manual radiator valve to a newer TRV offers the highest savings.
022_PHPI_DEC23_Layout 1 07/11/2023 11:17 Page 23
Room thermostats In addition to upgrading radiator thermostats, tests conducted in 2020 by the University of Salford on behalf of BEAMA and OpenTherm showed that replacing a standard room thermostat with one that controls the boiler using load or weather compensation can deliver savings of 10% whenever the heating is on. For households that are into IoT home automation, a smart thermostat could be worth considering. Field trials indicate that 6% less gas is used in houses with these devices and they offer the convenience of being able to adjust heating times and temperatures using a mobile phone. They can also sense whether you are in or out and adjust the heating settings automatically for further energy savings.
‘Control your Home’ The ‘Control Your Home’ website produced by BEAMA sets out practical
advice for saving energy, including what can be achieved by upgrading domestic heating controls. The website includes evidence from tests on a heating system to show the scale of savings that are possible by making a few simple adjustments to the controls. These include using TRVs to keep rooms other than the living room to 18˚C rather than 20˚C, which can reduce gas consumption by 16%. BEAMA’s tests also indicate that making small adjustments to time and temperature settings on a programmable room
thermostat could deliver a typical saving in energy bills of up to £192 this winter. In addition, tests were carried out to tackle the age-old question of whether it is better to turn the heating off when it's not needed rather than leaving it running at a lower temperature. Using programmable room thermostats to make a comparison the tests concluded that it is cheaper to switch heating on and off, but not by much. It seems evident, therefore, that installing modern electronic heating controls where there are none, or upgrading outdated devices, is one of the simplest, most cost-effective ways to reduce domestic heating bills. So, as fuel bills continue to be difficult to afford, we believe there’s never been a better time to save energy by utilising the technology that already exists and that we know works. DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS
HEAT PUMPS
WHAT INSTALLERS NEED TO KNOW With Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) gaining more attention than ever before, it is not surprising that many heating installers have questions about how to incorporate this technology into their portfolio. Baxi’s Training Manager, Ian Trott, answers some of the most frequently asked questions from installers about ASHPs and how to take advantage of the opportunities they present.
Q
Why is it important for installers to get comfortable with ASHPs?
ASHPs can be a great choice for homeowners looking to reduce their energy consumption while helping the environment. Providing heating and hot water to UK homes accounts for 17% of the country's carbon emissions, so it’s important we begin the transition to low-carbon solutions as quickly as possible. While this is likely to mean a shift in the nature of the work heating engineers carry out, fundamentally they will be using many of the skills they have today. For installers open to offering heat pump installation work, it’s good to keep in mind two things: firstly, like all technologies, ASHPs need to be installed correctly; and secondly, getting the best support, training and expert guidance is key for those who want to expand their skills and benefit from this growing market.
Q
What role do heat loss calculations play in ASHP installations? When installing heat pumps, one skill that should never be underestimated is the need to perform accurate heat loss
calculations. Heat loss calculations are needed to balance energy requirements with natural heat lost through building fabric and for the accurate sizing of heating systems. A detailed room by room heat loss calculation is therefore crucial to ensure the heating system works optimally, to heat the property properly and avoid unnecessarily high bills. Approved Document L: Conservation of Fuel and Power (also known as Part L) requires heat loss calculations be carried out with every heating installation, so installers should ensure they are proficient in the methods involved. To perform these calculations properly, installers must gather information about the building, such as window size and glazing, the type and state of insulation, as well as the size of the rooms and building overall. Heat loss calculations help to determine the most appropriate system for the situation it will be used in. Low-temperature heating systems, such as those using an ASHP, work far better when heat loss is known and accounted for, meaning these calculations should be seen as an integral part of an installation.
Q
Are there any tools available to help me?
24 DECEMBER 2023 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
When it comes to performing heat loss calculations, there is a downloadable Microsoft Excel document available for free on the MCS website. This simplifies the process considerably as all installers have to do is input the information gathered into the document which will then provide the specific outputs needed.
Q
Is a bigger heat pump system always better?
It’s a common misconception, especially among consumers, that a bigger system is better. The misplaced belief is that a boiler or ASHP that can heat a large house with 10 bedrooms would make light work of heating a two-bedroom semi-detached property and could even be more energy efficient. The reality is that the boilers and ASHPs that are best suited to smaller homes are the ones designed for smaller homes. The same is true for larger capacity heat sources better serving larger properties. An oversized ASHP will consume more energy than a correctly sized one. Heating installers should be aware of this and ensure that they are sizing all systems correctly, as maximizing heating efficiency is one of the primary objectives of Part L.
024_PHPI_DEC23_Layout 1 07/11/2023 13:15 Page 25
Q
What funding is available?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) allows homeowners who meet certain criteria to receive £7,500 towards replacing a gas boiler with an ASHP. This is issued as a voucher to the installer who redeems it and subtracts the value from the cost to their customer. The benefit to the homeowner is a £7,500 discount on their new, efficient heat pump system. The benefit to installers, meanwhile, is that the overall price the homeowner is expected to pay becomes much more affordable. The BUS helps to mitigate some of the concerns around cost and opens up a potentially huge market. The BUS is planned to end in 2028 and, given the recent increase from £5,000 to £7,500, homeowner demand is expected to rise. As a result, installers have a great opportunity to add heat pumps to their portfolio.
Q
What is involved in MCS accreditation?
Heating engineers who want to take advantage of the growing demand and BUS must be Microgeneration Certification
An oversized ASHP will consume more energy than a correctly sized one. Scheme (MCS) accredited. This involves getting familiar with technical standards for heat pumps and demonstrating competence with them. To support heating engineers with this, Baxi is delivering BPEC’s accredited heat pump course, which covers the principles of design, installation, commissioning, and servicing of ASHP systems. After a formal assessment that leads to a nationally recognised BPEC qualification, heating engineers can use the qualification to demonstrate competence in heat pump installation for their MCS application. Taking time out of the working week and paying for a training course to qualify can sometimes be difficult for installers to justify. To help with the cost of courses and taking time out of work, the Government launched its Heat Training Grant, which gives installers £500 towards a heat pump
training course – including the BPEC course delivered by Baxi’s specialist trainers. As the country accelerates its decarbonisation drive, heating engineers will increasingly be viewed as energy consultants and becoming MCS accredited is an important part of growing into that evolved responsibility. Installers can apply directly to MCS to demonstrate their proficiency however there are also courses available that will help to prepare them for accreditation and to work confidently and safely with ASHPs. Once an installer has their MCS accreditation, not only does it offer evidence to customers that they are dealing with a qualified and committed professional, but accreditation also allows access to certain Government funding schemes.

To mark the launch of the n ew iBox universa l 2 from hansg rohe PH PI takes a look at one of the first installations, to discover more about th e features on th e new unit.
FIRST LOOK // IBOX UNIVERSAL 2 T he original iBox universal basic set from hansgrohe was launched back in 2003. Designed to make fitting and maintaining concealed showers simple, it has subsequently been used in over 11 million units. Drawing on valuable installer feedback, the latest, updated iBox universal 2, was unveiled at this year’s ISH and is now available to purchase across the UK.
Pre-mounted seals Features of the new solution include built-in flexibility to addresses awkward fitting scenarios, new recyclable construction materials, the removal of the need to trim components and the inclusion of both pre-mounted seals and pre-installed function blocks. We met with Tim Bridge, from Tim Bridge Plumbing and Heating in Yorkshire – who has been using the original iBox for over 20 years – as he fitted the first iBox universal 2 to be installed in a UK property, to find out his first impressions.
Speaking of this initial install, Tim said: “I’ve been using hansgrohe’s iBox since I was 17, so it is great to see the next generation coming through. Ease of installation has kept me returning to this fixing system time and time again as I know it just works. “My customers tend to favour a concealed unit as it meets the sleek finish they want to achieve. For me, it shaves valuable time off each installation and the circular shape means it is virtually impossible to install incorrectly. “As I have been fitting the original iBox for many years, I have worked out my own methods to make it easy to use. For instance, trimming the front to the required depth and fitting the membrane can take me a matter of minutes. “However, the new version irons out even those aspects that may have taken any time, making it even more straightforward to install and fit correctly. And you only need two tools – a screwdriver and an Allen key – to fit it.

Fixing plate
“Right from taking it out of the box, I spotted the upgrades. The iBox universal 2 is neatly packaged as one, so it stays together as you lift it out with no chance of losing anything on a busy renovation site. Depending on your installation preference you can then simply slide the green back plate off the front and slot it on the back of the iBox 2 plate. “The fixing plate, which is screwed inside wall has installation-friendly improvements too. It is great to have a built-in spirit level included to make it easy to ensure you’ve got it horizontal before you finally tighten any screws.”
The fixing plate can be tilted by 5 mm increments, so it is straight vertically too, again using the spirit level on the top to guide installers to factor in discrepancies in the wall, before using an Allen key to tighten. The pipes can then be cut to size and installed for water delivery at the sides, top and bottom. Tim continued: “I’ve used many other kits over the years that rely on you setting the levels by eye, so this is a great help and makes it much less fiddly, particularly if you are working in a confined space. The Allen bolts are fixed to ensure they don’t fall out too – again ideal when you really don’t have a great deal of space to find something you’ve dropped. “Another key feature that stood out is the fact that you can move the sliding sleeve forward and backwards to suit the depth of the wall, and without the need to trim it once in place. Simply adjust the front section to where you need it, add a backer board, and
push it back in. The previous hansgrohe iBox required cutting once in place. Although, I had developed a quick method to do this, this is infinitely better and quicker especially for those new to the industry. “Finally, the new iBox 2 also includes a fixed waterproof membrane, which can simply be attached to the wall before tiling. Again, this speeds up the install and ensures a watertight finish without any hassle. “All that remains is to fit one of hansgrohe’s sleek, new finish sets once tiling is complete and the concealed shower is in. The soft cube finishing plate that will be used with this first installation includes a line across the centre – ideal to get the tiles lined up with so it pleases the eye. The installation I’m working on here has been designed to allow easy access for a wheelchair, and the beauty of this system means that I can connect the iBox universal 2 in a convenient location giving greater flexibility of where the showerhead and control are placed, so it not only looks great but works perfectly for the customer.” The new iBox universal 2 can be used with all existing and future concealed finish sets from Hansgrohe, for existing finish sets, you need an adaptor; so, the iBox can remain in place should the bathroom be renovated, or the finish set replaced. s i l y t S h BASINS
With a broad range of choices to be made in any bathroom refurbishment, Robert Pattern, HiB Novum Category Manager, looks at the features of Mineral Marble and Ceramic basins.
A
ccording to research by the BMA, 67% of people choose bathroom products based on them being needed for the bathroom as a practical space used by all the family (BMA, May 2022). So clearly usefulness and durability are key considerations when deciding which products will work best in their space. Each bathroom must have a basin and as one of the most frequently needed aspects of the room, they need to be robust enough to withstand continuous use while still looking fresh and stylish. For years, ceramic has been the reigning champion in the UK bathroom basins market, but the rise of mineral marble as a viable alternative has been a game-changer in recent years. At HiB, we've witnessed the developments in mineral marble technology first-hand and we're excited to share how mineral marble has evolved into a fantastic choice for homeowners.
stain-free and easy to clean. This quality also makes it more hygienic, as it doesn't harbour bacteria. The surface can also be cleaned using natural agents, which are less harmful to the environment. Mineral marble is also durable, resistant to chipping, scratching and fading. Its robustness ensures that it stands the test of time and reduces the need for replacements. In the unlikely event that the surface of the basin does get damaged, mineral marble can be repaired.
Ceramic
Mineral marble Mineral marble, also known as mineral composite, is made from dolomite stone and resin. The production of the material has come a long way since its introduction to the market. It's no longer merely an imitation of natural stone, it has evolved into a material with particular properties and aesthetics. One of its most significant advantages is the wide range of design possibilities it offers. Mineral marble can be moulded into almost any shape or size, making it perfect
for crafting modern and sleek basin designs that cater to various interior styles. This is something we’ve been working on at HiB, most recently with the launch of the Terra vessel basins, which offer a textured and coloured exterior in contrast with a smooth white interior, as well as the Dexter basin which offers a more timeless style. But what sets mineral marble apart is its non-porous nature. The material's properties ensure the basin remains
30 DECEMBER 2023 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Despite the revolution in mineral marble basins, there is a confidence and familiarity in ceramic held by the British public that is hard to ignore. Ceramic washbasins are tried and tested solutions that, with proper care, can be highly durable and resistant to scratches. Ceramic is hard-wearing and with the practical needs of the consumer paramount, many still want the reassurance of a ceramic basin for their home. At HiB we offer a strong range of ceramic vessel and washbasins and continue to invest in ceramic as a material for our basin ranges. The new Opia range offers three options of deep, stylish bowl, that when paired with a complementing countertop and brassware, create a sophisticated look. STORED HOT WATER
IS KEY TO NET-ZERO F irst off, when replacing a system or heat only boiler, where there’s already a hot water cylinder in place, there’s a conversation to be had with the homeowner about future-proofing their heating system by installing a new smart hot water cylinder that can easily be converted to work with a heat pump or solar PV. This proactive approach allows homeowners to make choices today that not only pave the way for a different heating system in the future but also contribute to significant cost savings today. A smart hot water cylinder, such as a Mixergy smart water cylinder, can save money on energy bills now. When connected with solar PV, direct electric or gas, thermal stratification means the Mixergy cylinder starts by heating a small volume of water at the top of the cylinder and then growing that volume downwards. This is unlike most cylinders that have a coil at the bottom and heat the whole thing. This means the cylinder only heats the water needed, reducing heat losses, and gets to the set temperature more quickly, making it up to 21% more efficient than a conventional cylinder, as validated by Energy Saving Trust. As we electrify the heating in our homes, we have to move from gas, which can deliver up to 65kW of thermal power, to an electrical connection which can deliver up to around 18kW. This is approximately a quarter of the available
instant power which has enabled compact, low-cost combi boilers to prevail to date. An EV charger will also add to the electrical load. Filling a bath quickly or running a typical power shower might demand 20kW of power or more, so the only way of achieving this will be through storing hot water. This is true whether we are installing a heat pump, solar PV or electric storage heaters, and aligns with the UK’s long-term environmental goals.
Heat losses Ensuring a home is heat pump ready means calculating the property’s heat losses, checking there are no microbore pipes and seeing if the existing radiators would be adequate for a heat pump. A smart hot water cylinder installed now can be easily converted to work with a heat pump in the future through the retrofit of a plate heat exchanger which achieves the highest heat transfer performance to improve the coefficient of performance (COP) by as much as 10% when compared to a high surface area coil. For homeowners considering solar PV in the future, a smart hot water cylinder can be simply retrofitted with a PV diverter. This is a great option for homes with microbore plumbing and poor fabric which may struggle to justify a heat-pump install and decide, for example, to decarbonise through a combination of PV, radiant heating and fabric improvements. A PV diverter will allow
As we move towards net-zero, householders will still need fast and convenient hot water that will not become a greater burden on their energy bills. The introduction of new technologies, the electrification of heat and a fabric-first approach to designing heating systems means stored hot water will be crucial, as Peter Armstrong, CEO of Mixergy, explains. them to benefit from the provision of free hot water whenever there is surplus solar energy from their PV installation. This is a great alternative to a home battery system.
Flexible tariffs Finally, flexible electricity tariffs will become more available as the latest generation of smart meters is rolled out. Second generation smart meters will allow energy suppliers to operate real-time dynamic pricing. We’re all familiar with Economy 7, where a hot water cylinder has two elements; the new version will be like Economy 24/7, which means the energy supplier can turn on your hot water whenever there’s a lot of wind off the northwest coast of Scotland, or when there’s a large base load at Hinkley Point, or when there’s plenty of solar energy in Cornwall. With a smart hot water cylinder which uses thermal stratification, there is more space in the cylinder to store this more economic hot water. Heating engineers can play a crucial role in preparing their customers for the future, whether that is getting the best from their gas boilers now and having one eye on decarbonisation, whether that’s with a heat pump, solar PV, electric boilers or storage heaters. Saving water IN THE BATHROOM Property owners are becoming more environmentally aware, and with the cost of living crisis they are looking to save water and in turn, save money. Sophie Weston, Marketing Manager at Geberit, takes a look at water-saving solutions to consider across residential and commercial projects.
A
ccording to the Energy Saving Trust, bathroom showers, toilets, baths and washbasins consume more than two-thirds (68%) of household water. Consequently, the bathroom is an ideal place to start when trying to reduce water usage and save money. With that in mind, here are four options to bear in mind when looking to recommend water-saving solutions.
1
Showers and baths that save
Showers are now the largest user of water in the home. Across Britain, we use around 840 billion litres each year, with £2.3 billion being spent on heating water for showers alone. To reduce water usage in the shower without compromising on performance, consider fitting showers with a regulator or aerator. An aerator combines air with water to give the feeling of power while regulators place an upper limit on flow rates. Despite a shower using less water than a bath, people still like the choice. Manufacturers are continuing to develop space-saving tubs with a lower water capacity, providing the perfect option for saving water while still enjoying the occasional soak.
2
Water-saving WCs
It is estimated that an average household uses more than 33 litres of water from flushing every day, so introducing dual flush technology is the most effective way to reduce water consumption. Manufacturers are increasingly producing dual flush plates, which have the added functionality of a ‘low’ flush option, reducing water usage even further with every flush. For instance, Geberit’s Turboflush 2.0 uses controlled technology to improve flushing performance while using just 4.5 litres of water. However, water-saving cisterns are only the first step. Maintenance and upkeep are essential. The integrity of washers in valves and flat rubber seals can degrade over years of usage so remind your customers to check their WCs for running water in the bowl when the toilet has not been flushed. In fact, water charity Water Wise estimates that between five and eight per cent of UK households have appliances which leak, particularly the WC, which can easily be avoided with proper care and maintenance.

the water flowing. Taps fitted with this technology will usually halt the water even for the briefest of absences, such as when brushing teeth or reaching for the soap.
4
3
Taps with built-in technology
At Geberit, we believe that sustainability starts with design which is why we consider this in every product we create, because even small changes in the bathroom can have a significant impact on a property’s water consumption. For instance, brassware with built-in water-saving technology offers better control of water usage. Infrared taps that are proximity-activated eliminate the risk of accidentally leaving
Commercial water-saving solutions
Water saving in homes is important. However, projects with higher footfall areas are just as essential in the bid to tackle water wastage. For commercial washroom projects, specifying the right urinal system can offer real water-saving opportunities. Manufacturers are now incorporating innovations such as different operation modes, with associated low operation and maintenance costs. For example, Geberit manufactures an integrated urinal flush control which can be operated using three power supply variants, while flushing out the urinal ceramic appliance with 0.5 litres per flush.
Additionally, some urinal systems incorporate a water-saving flush function and proximity flushes, making it ideal for heavy footfall washrooms. Flushing time is decreased when user frequency increases – so, for instance, the pre-set flush time is halved when another user approaches the urinal within one minute after the most recent flushing. Flow rate can also be reduced by changing the duration of the flush. For more information please www.rdr.link/paz017

90% of UK users claim they have saved energy by installing the Netatmo Smart Heating Solution According to a Netatmo user survey, 58.9% of UK participants claim to have saved up to £215. To mark the 10th anniversary of its Smart Thermostat, Netatmo, France’s leading smart home company, carried out a survey on 2,400 customers in Europe to learn more about how they use their smart heating solutions. Out of the UK users who took part in the survey, 90% claim that they have been saving energy since installing the Smart Thermostat. In addition, 88.8% have claimed that the Netatmo Smart Heating Solution allowed them to feel comfortable despite turning down their heating and 78.6% reported that they would recommend it to a friend. As for the reasons for purchasing this equipment, 82.1% of users from the United Kingdom state they installed smart heating solutions to easily control and regulate their heating, 44.5% to save energy, and 30.1% to monitor and analyse their consumption. According to research by the Energy Saving Trust, if everyone in Great Britain turned their thermostat down by one degree Celsius, we would reduce energy bills by £670 million, while saving 3.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year. Therefore, while energy saving was clearly a key motivation for installing the Netatmo Smart Heating Solution,
the ability to easily control and regulate heating was a key motivation for UK Users, with 82% citing this as the reason for their purchase. The Netatmo Smart Thermostat allows users to heat their home optimally and only when needed. By asking just five questions about the user’s routine, the Thermostat creates a heating schedule tailored to their lifestyle. In addition to this schedule, the Away and Frost Protection modes can adjust the heating when the user is gone for several days. The user can also control their heating remotely using their smartphone. With the Auto‐Adapt feature, the Netatmo Smart Thermostat analyses the home’s insulation and the outdoor temperature to automatically determine the time needed to reach the target
temperature. This helps ensure the utmost comfort and prevents unnecessary energy use. The Netatmo Smart Thermostat is easy to install and doesn’t require any technical expertise or construction work. An online tool is also available to check whether the home’s system is compatible with the Netatmo Smart Thermostat. The Starter Pack - Smart Radiator Valves offers the same functionality as the Smart Thermostat. This solution is easy to install on any hot-water radiator, and it allows users to control the temperature of their home when it uses a collective heating system. This way, users enjoy a comfortable and accurate temperature at all times. Netatmo Smart Radiator Valves also have an Open Window Detection feature. This means users can automatically set the heating to turn off in a
room when a window is opened so no energy is wasted. This feature will also turn the heating back on as soon as it detects that the window has been closed, or 30 minutes after detecting that it has been opened. For even greater comfort, additional Smart Radiator Valves can be added to the Netatmo Smart Thermostat and Starter Pack. Compatible with 90% of hot water radiators, they regulate the heating room by room and create a heating schedule for each room to suit the occupants' lifestyle. ON THE BEND
PHPI takes a look at a solution for one of the more common requirements of most plumbers – bending pipe.
B
ending pipe is likely a near everyday occurrence for some installers. Consequently, a comfortable, robust and accurate pipe bender is a must for professionals. Benditnow’s BC35 is a common copper stand bending machine supplied with formers and guides in sizes of 15,22 & 28mm. In order to produce great bends it is necessary to have accurate components. Benditnow’s formers are individually casted, then heat treated and finally painted. The working surfaces are machined using a computer-controlled lathe for an accurate machined finish. The guides that accompany the formers are from precision extrusions which are then cut and finished to the company’s specification. All turned parts are produced using computer-controlled lathes in the UK. The company also produces a BC42 machine – a larger machine than the BC35 to accommodate the bigger sizes to be bent. This unit has formers and guides in sizes
15,22,28,35 & 42mm and also has an extension tube with a soft touch grip to give greater leverage on the bending lever that may be needed for the larger sizes of copper.
Hand bending The 15 & 22mm hand bending machines ‘BHB’ can be used for many aspects of plumbing installations and are useful when space may be an issue. The product comes with 15 & 22mm aluminium guides and has been designed to be lightweight and easy to use. REVIEW OF THE YEAR | NEWS
TALKING SHOP
With 2023 almost in the bag, PHPI takes a brief look back at one of the main talking points of the year, and (spoiler alert) yes, it is Heat Pumps. Jordon Puddefoot
IN OTHER NEWS... LUCKY WINNER
Worcester Bosch’s 5800i AW heat pump
O
ver the last 12 months one topic within the sector, more than any other, has dominated debates, websites, roadshows, events and the pages of PHPI – Heat Pumps. The move towards the government’s 2050 Net Zero target has placed the heating sector, along with transport, right at the heart of the debate. For a number of years, and throughout the first half of 2023, it was increasingly clear that the government was pursuing a shift away from fossil fuel heating technologies such as oil, LPG and gas boilers, towards low carbon alternatives, and in particular Heat Pumps. Consequently, many heating manufacturers have been developing and introducing Heat Pumps into the UK market. A number of products were debuted in the last couple of years and more have followed this year. In the summer Worcester Bosch entered the fray launching its 5800i AW heat pump using R290 refrigerant, while Panasonic introduced its new range of Aquarea L Generation options. Amongst other introductions, Navien welcomed a new monoblock solution and Baxi brought forward its HP40 Monobloc ASHP range in outputs from 4kW to 13kW.
Last year Vaillant opened a new Heat Pump production line, and Ideal Heating opened a UK manufacturing plant in 2023. Visitors to the popular InstallerSHOW at the NEC in June will have seen a number of Heat Pumps on display, with many in the aisles talking about the importance of helping installers to get up-to-speed with these solutions through new training opportunities. Without doubt, Heat Pumps have certainly been a major topic of conversation during 2023. However, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak threw the sector a curveball in September, announcing that a deadline to phase out oil and LPG boilers by 2026 would be pushed back to 2035. There was also mention of an ‘exemption’ for the poorest households ever having to make the switch. The announcement was welcomed by many in the sector, although some commentators have questioned what this says about the government’s commitment to its Net Zero 2050 plan, with many left wondering if the shift towards Heat Pumps will now take place at the speed and the scale previously calculated.
Throughout the year manufacturers across the sector have used loyalty or incentive schemes to attract plumbers and heating engineers towards their solutions. One which stood out for us was JG Speedfit’s ‘20 Grand in your Hand’ campaign to attract installers to try its products. Plumber Jordon Puddefoot from Milton Keynes was the lucky winner taking home a cheque for £20,000 – all thanks to his purchase of a bag of the company’s 15mm Equal Elbows.

Although Solar PV is not a solution often used by plumbers, those wanting to create a holistic approach to reducing a home’s carbon emissions may want to consider it as part of a wider ‘household’ solution. Viessmann’s Vitovolt 300 solar PV system can be used with a Viessmann heat pump, enabling householders to generate electricity for use both as energy and heat, reducing running costs of the heat pump as well as energy costs for the entire home. The Vitovolt 300 package has plug-in solutions for electrical connections and fully wired matching components. For more information please

LEGIONNAIRES’ DISEASE
ADDRESSING CUSTOMER QUESTIONS Kevin Wellman, CEO of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), guides installers on how to address Legionella concerns and answer customers’ questions.
A
s most experienced plumbing and heating installers will know, Legionella pneumophila is the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease. The bacteria thrive at temperatures between 20-45°C, though it can survive outside of this range, and the disease may be contracted by inhaling contaminated water droplets. Here, we explore how installers can help customers better understand risks, prevention and solutions.
The Risks It is possible for Legionella bacteria to live inside a residential and commercial water systems, and this can be very dangerous to end users. Legionnaires’ can severely impact the elderly, infants and the immune-compromised and, being a lung infection, the symptoms include coughing and shortness of breath, usually accompanied by a high temperature. It’s important that installers educate the public on how serious this is as, in some cases, people who contract the disease may need to be hospitalised. One of the reasons for increased Legionella risk is that, due to the cost-of-living crisis, some people have lowered the temperature of their systems to below 60˚C. Unfortunately, in the hope that the small reduction in energy used would save them money, end users may have unknowingly increased the risk of Legionella. Treatment for Legionnaires’ consists of a combination of antibiotics administered intravenously, an oxygen mask or nasal
tubes, and a machine to assist with breathing. For most, a full recovery usually takes a few weeks but in the worst instances, Legionnaires’ can prove fatal – therefore prevention is paramount.
Preventing Legionella Growth The principles for preventing growth of Legionella are fairly simple: keep systems clean, keep them flowing, keep the hot water hot and the cold water cold. Where cylinders are concerned, hot water should be stored at a minimum temperature of 60°C. In almost all cases, hot water should be distributed in such a way that it reaches 50˚C within one minute of turning the outlet on. The exception to this is in Care Quality Commission (CQC)-registered healthcare premises which require hot water to be flowing at 55˚C within the same time limit. Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMVs) can be installed to make these targets possible, safe and comfortable for the user. Cold water must be stored and distributed so that its temperature is 20˚C or below within one minute of reaching the outlet. Where the installation and maintenance has been proficiently carried out, these target temperatures are usually achieved in just a few seconds. One of the main ways installers can prevent Legionella growth is by identifying parts of customers’ systems or places in their homes where water is likely to be left stagnant and within 20-45˚C. Pipework layout should be considered too because
Cold water must be stored and distributed so that its temperature is 20˚C or below within one minute of reaching the outlet.
hot and cold pipes that are close together can allow the transfer of heat, causing water to sit within 20-45˚C. Preventing heat transfer is crucial so, in cases where space restrictions pose a challenge to isolation, adding insulation will restrict heat transfer between pipes.
Places for Potential Problems Uninsulated pipework is not the only challenge. Showers and showerheads, for example, can provide Legionella with an ideal place to grow as they can remain wet and above 20˚C for a significant amount of time. Installers should recommend to customers that they regularly dismantle, clean and descale their showerheads to avoid buildups of bacteria in general, but especially Legionella.
Solutions for Contaminated Systems If customers suspect their ill-health is due to their heating and hot water system being contaminated, they should speak to a medical professional immediately. Plumbing and heating installers can support by providing a Home Health Check to identify elements of a system that are a cause for concern. Installers can then alert the homeowner, explain the risks and offer to remedy the problem, including performing a full system flush where necessary. For further support professionals can access the CIPHE’s guide on Legionella Risk Assessing in Domestic Properties.
For more on Legionella and to access Legionella Risk Assessing in Domestic Properties, see CIPHE.org.uk.

TRAPPEX DOMESTIC FILTER RANGE Preventing sludge and limescale build-up in domestic central heating systems is important in maintaining the efficiency of central heating systems, as well as avoiding callbacks and breakdowns. The Trappex range of Domestic Filters and Inline scale reducers from Arctic Hayes has been designed to combat build-ups of these harmful particulates, which can lead to reduced efficiency, increased energy consumption and even central heating system failures. The Trappex range includes the ‘Centramag 2’ Nylon Filters (22 and 28mm), the Genesis Brass Filters (22mm available with or without valves) and the Quantum Mini Brass Filter (22mm) providing multiple installation options for heating engineers. The Trappex Filters work by controlling the water flow and maximising the non-magnetic particle capture, while the Trappex Inline reducers use electrolyte principles to prevent the build-up of scale. By consistently capturing and removing sludge and limescale, the Trappex Filters prevent these substances from settling within the system and causing blockages. This ensures that the heating system continues to operate efficiently. The Trappex Filters and Magnets both carry manufacturers’ warranties (25 years on the Genesis Brass Filters).
The Identification Clip Range from Talon instantly tell installers what each pipe is carrying and therefore how to approach any repair or replacement work. The yellow clip alerts installers and homeowners to gas pipework, the red coloured clip denotes hot water supply lines and helps avoid any confusion between hot water pipes with their cold counterparts, ensuring seamless installations and repairs. The blue clip signals cold water distribution. To install hinged clips, position them on the desired wall, attach with a screw through the clip, place the pipe within the clip, and securely fasten the clip over the pipe. The clip provides a 360-degree retention around the pipe and has been designed to not warp or distort with temperature changes.

Secure has introduced a new controls range, which includes the upgrade of several of the company’s programmers. The H17, H27, H37, and H47 have been replaced with the new H3747, a volt free, 4-channel unit which uses the same 9-pin backplate, meaning only minor wiring changes are needed to install it. The H3747 can control one to four zones, allowing installers to add extra zones when required. The range has been designed to keep pace with current and future regulations, including Boiler Plus and SAP. The H3747 is also smart-capable. Out of the box it can be controlled fully from the PTD, and comes pre-paired with Bluetooth, making it compatible with the Secure user app, enabling users to control hot water and heating from a mobile device. The H3747 can also be upgraded to a fully remote system with the addition of the optional Wi-Fi adaptor.

WARMFLOW Selecting an ASHP Adam from Mr A Builders is currently conducting an extensive extension of his end-terrace house and is reassessing his current energy situation. Adam recently met with Niel Rumbold, National Sales Manager for Renewables at Warmflow, to have a chat about Air Source Heat Pumps. In the video Niel provides an introduction to the fundamentals of heat pumps before explaining how they differ from more traditional systems. Niel also explains the need for a whole house approach to insulation and heating before discussing with Adam the particulars of getting an air source heat pump installed. The pair take a look at a new utility room where the inside kit could go, then take a look outside, to determine the location for the heat pump. Niel explains some of the requirements here, such as the space needed around the pump to maximise airflow. The pair go on to discuss noise, with Niel explaining a Warmflow 20kW pump was no louder than 54 decibels when at maximum. Niel finishes off by giving Adam a quote for his property with a recommended heat pump size – something which Warmflow does with all its potential customers. To watch the video

ROMAN Take a tour...
ADEY System deep cleaning If sludge isn’t removed from a system it can build up quickly, not only floating around in pipes and radiators and blocking heat from coming through properly, but causing damage to the boiler. ADEY has developed a range of resources available to installers to help them talk to customers about system deep cleaning, including this video, which also demonstrates how a MagnaCleanse system flush can help remove even hardened debris.
