Bathroom bliss Bathrooms are a key room in every house and not only from a hygiene point-of-view – they can also help with relaxation and wellbeing, a sanctuary away from the daily grind. It is, therefore, of little surprise that they feature high on the list of priorities for anyone looking to spruce up their home. A survey organised by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles during the summer found that two-thirds of homeowners were planning home improvements in the next year, with Bathrooms (32%) third on homeowners’ makeover shopping list – only superseded by a small margin by Kitchens (35%) and the Garden (33%). The survey also revealed that many homeowners would be looking to spend well over £10,000 to complete their property projects: it suggested that on average homeowners are planning to spend £13,958 on their home makeovers. Of course, when it comes to the designs and solutions being sought within a new bathroom the options are nearly endless – from powerful showers and walk-in wetrooms, to freestanding tubs and shower toilets. Whilst many may be tempted to demand the creation of a spa-like sanctuary in which to un-wind and de-stress, it is important to remember that often bathrooms must also cater for the needs of a significant number of people in a household, often with a wide variety of ages and requirements. For those people living in a multi-generational household, bathrooms require features that can support the needs of each individual, without sacrificing good design. You’ll find some advice on how to approach working on a bathroom project in a multigenerational home on page 28. And, with environmental awareness a growing issue, customers may also be seeking water saving solutions as part of a bathroom renovation. There are a number of solutions worth considering, including dual-flush toilets, low-flow shower heads and flow restrictors on taps. You’ll find more advice on reducing water usage in the bathroom on page 23. But whether form or function dominates the design there are ways to ensure bathrooms remain both eye-catching and cosy. One option is to use more colour in a bathroom. Although white remains timeless, colour can be used to express more character or style. Dulux has recently named ‘Bright Skies’ – a light sky blue – its Colour of the Year for 2022, which might be a starting point for the as yet undecided. 2022 is now just around the corner, and for many plumbers undertaking bathroom renovations it could well be a busy time.

VAILLANT LAUNCHES WHITE PAPER ON DECARBONISING HEATING CALL TO ACTION OVER KNEEPAD USAGE ToughBuilt is calling for greater awareness of the need for adequate knee protection. The business has launched its ‘KneelSmart, KneelSafe' campaign which aims to make organisations across the UK aware of the important role products like kneepads can play in preventing work related injuries and in reducing lost work days. Matthew Handley, Head of Marketing at ToughBuilt (Europe), explained: "We know that it's all too easy for people to take their knees for granted and to overlook the fact they are the largest, most complex and arguably most important joint in the human body. We would like to see kneepads treated with the same gravity and widespread consideration as other forms of PPE such as eye protection, safety helmets and protective footwear. “Our ultimate aim is to significantly reduce the number of people who inadvertently and unfortunately end up as a work-related knee injury statistic.” To ensure people choose knee pads which are fit-for-purpose ToughBuilt advises checking for appropriate levels of penetration resistance, force distribution and shock absorption.
With the future of heating a hot topic Vaillant has unveiled its ‘Decarbonising Home Heating in the UK’ White Paper, which the company hopes will give a balanced overview of the mix of heating technologies, and the support available to ensure installers and specifiers are able to make the most of all opportunities. Klaus Jesse, Managing Director of Vaillant said: “The majority of the UK’s housing stock is ageing and around 80% of these properties will still be in use in 2050’s. This is why the decarbonisation of heat in homes is essential to achieving the Government’s target of net zero by 2050. Low carbon heating system solutions are available today with more being developed for the future. However, it is clear there is no ‘silver bullet’ and there will need to be a multi-technology approach to help the UK reach net zero.” Mark Wilkins, Technologies and Training Director from Vaillant added: “The progression to net zero will not happen overnight. There are 26 million homes in the UK, so during this decade trials and tests are fundamental to achieve our decarbonisation goals. With the recent announcement from the Government on the Hydrogen Strategy outlining a longer-term timeframe for the roll out of this new fuel, it is clear that a mix of technologies will be needed to help reduce emissions, especially in the immediate future. Whilst we are working with the industry to bring hydrogen solutions for home heating, those needing to start their decarbonisation journey should turn to heat pump technology which is very much here now.” To download the white paper

BIKBBI ISSUES WARNING OVER SHORTAGE OF WORKERS The British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom & Bathroom Installation (BiKBBI) has issued a warning that the current shortage of workers could be the long term reality for the home improvement industry. Responding to the publication of the latest Jobs Recovery Tracker from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), BiKBBI has warned that it is not just employers that are being hit by staff shortages, but also consumers and businesses who rely on self-employed tradespeople. Damian Walters, BiKBBI’s Chief Executive, said: “The alarm bells need to be ringing as the REC report does not come close to the full scale of the worker shortage crisis. Industries like ours, that are essential to home improvement delivered by skilled professionals, are predominantly made up by self-employed traders not covered by job vacancy statistics. Like other industries though, we are seeing a major shortage of people able to take up jobs.” “What’s needed is a nationwide effort to encourage youngsters into the industries that people rely on alongside sustained investment into skills training.”

HEATING & RENEWABLES
SYSTEM DESIGN Combining renewable heating technology with a traditional gas boiler can be beneficial for many customers. Robert Stiby, Heating Champion at Daikin, looks at the factors to consider when recommending and installing a hybrid heat pump system. eat pumps offer a low carbon, renewable solution for domestic heating and hot water, however this technology is not right for every customer and property. For example, heat pumps may not be suitable for older homes with poor levels of insulation that cannot be improved. Also, some customers may want to reduce their carbon footprint and energy usage but are reluctant to switch to a fully renewable heating system. In these cases, hybrid heating can provide the solution. A hybrid heat pump combines air-to-water heat pump technology with a gas condensing boiler, to deliver the highest efficiency. The system can be run in heat pump only, gas boiler only or hybrid modes depending on the conditions. For ease of use by the homeowners, the system can automatically switch between the operating modes to ensure high efficiency and guaranteed comfort. Products such as our Daikin Altherma hybrid heat pumps can also factor in energy prices for electricity and gas to utilise the most economical combination of technologies.
H
There is also the option to install a heat pump alongside an existing gas boiler in a ‘bi-valent’ system. This differs from a hybrid system in that it allows switching between the heat-pump and boiler but does not offer the option of running the two simultaneously.
Energy saving When in heat pump mode, a hybrid system can achieve up to A++ energy rating and as much as 160% efficiency. In other words, it produces 60% more energy than the input energy source. Typically, the hybrid system will operate mainly in heat pump mode during the warmer months to deliver high levels of energy efficiency, with the gas boiler used to boost the system output when the temperature drops.
it is important that the system is designed correctly to ensure it operates as intended.
While heat pumps can operate in temperatures as low as -25˚C, the insulation standard of the property can be the factor that decides if a hybrid system is more suitable. Therefore, the first step when recommending a new heating system of any kind should be to establish the current levels of insulation. This can be done easily and inexpensively with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) survey. The certificate will include recommendations on improving the insulation and energy efficiency, and it is always worth advising customers to make improvements where possible.

HEATING & RENEWABLES
Heat loss calculations can then be made alongside output calculations for the existing heat emitters. This will firstly indicate if the property is suitable for a heat pump or hybrid system and allow the installer to give the homeowners an idea of costs and benefits. It also ensures the proper sizing of the heat pump and heat emitters. The conventional wisdom is that heat pumps are most suitable for underfloor heating or require larger radiators to be installed due to the lower flow temperature. However, if insulation improvements have been made it may be that existing radiators are still capable of producing the required output.
Accurate calculations The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) guidance notes that the ‘rules of thumb’ commonly used for standard boiler installations, such as watts per square metre or watts per cubic meter (W/m2 or W/m3), are not suitable for heat pump installations. While these whole house calculations can be used to establish the feasibility and
approximate costs, they should not be used for the final design, including the sizing of the heat generator and emitters. Instead, installers should adopt a room-by-room elemental approach to calculations, aggregating the heat losses from individual elements such as windows, walls, roof, floor and from ventilation and infiltration. There are various tools available to help installers correctly calculate heat loss and design the system, such as Daikin’s Heating Solutions Navigator and Altherma selection software. Renewable heating options are becoming increasingly popular among customers wishing to reduce energy costs and their environmental impact. Hybrid heat pump systems offer an option for combining the benefits of heat pumps and traditional gas boilers. However, it is important that the system is designed correctly to ensure it operates as intended. To find out more about Daikin Altherma hybrid heat pumps www.rdr.link/paa004

HEATING & RENEWABLES
RETROFITS,RENEWABLES , REWARD Pete Mills, Commercial Technical Operations Manager for Bosch Commercial & Industrial, looks at the need for training in retrofitting and renewables.
W
e’re currently going through a major transition in the heating industry. We’ve known it for a while now, however the wider public and the media are starting to be more aware of their energy use and what changes to the way we heat our homes could be. As new technology comes to the fore, there will be a need for those on the ground, as it were, to develop and expand on their current skillset. Heat networks and heat pumps, for example, are becoming more talked about and prevalent, which in some cases may be completely new territory. Plus with hydrogen on the horizon things are
Whatever the energy mix will look like, it is certain that it won’t be just solely boiler or heat pump technology
generally going to be more demanding. I think a lot of customers, whether homeowners or commercial developers, will be looking for advice and guidance from professional installers. Particularly if forced to change the way their property or properties are heated to emit less carbon – so it is important to start getting up to speed with the latest developments and have a holistic approach in order to tackle future projects.
Alternative systems If we think of retrofitting, that is a large job, one that requires a lot of thought and planning. If we are not careful, all of a sudden we will be in a place where installers are asked more and more about alternative heating systems than boilers. If these are completely new areas then the time is now to start learning and trying out different technologies. Looking at how a heating system is different if run on a heat pump for example, taking into fact it runs on lower temperatures, needs different radiator sizing and so on.
12 NOVEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
This also moves into the renewable space. Say you have a heating system which is linked to, or at homeowners request is to be linked to, Solar PV. Then an installer will need to know how to facilitate this. Smart grid technology is likely to become more widely available and is already in use in Europe. Some heat pump controllers already have this facility and there is likely to be interest, certainly from the commercial sector to begin with. The demand for Solar PV in existing homes has diminished over the last several years, even though it is a great technology. There were several generous feed-in tariffs for solar PV in the early days – a return of 43p for every kilowatt hour (kwh) generated by the panels. This offer kick started the market and was reduced to lower levels over time, as today the offer is around 4p for every kwh generated. At this rate, solar PV is attractive, but it offers virtually a nil return today when compared to seven or eight years ago. The technology is still used in new build properties however, mainly to assist with carbon requirements.
012_PHPI_NOV21_Layout 1 04/10/2021 15:20 Page 13
With that in mind, it is still worth a refresher course on renewable technology, just to be prepared if customers start to ask more about it?
The hybrid option This hybrid approach – a secondary heating source which supports the main renewable technology – is something that will become more apparent, particularly when retrofitting properties. If heat pumps do grow in prominence, building owners may still want to keep their boiler as back-up, but this may also be the route that enables retrofit projects with heat pumps to get established. Hybrids can minimise disruption to existing heating systems but still enable significant carbon savings. So again, it is not only learning how to fit heat pump technology, but also connect to an existing system. If we throw controls into the mix too, particularly smart monitoring ones, the future is going to be very technology-focused and having a basic understanding of that will go a long way and potentially set you ahead of your local competition.
range of property types, so there may be value in looking into training in this area. The sector as a whole anticipates that heat networks will account for many of the jobs in the new ‘green industrial revolution’ and it is certainly one that will benefit from skilled professionals transferring from other parts of the industry. The benefit of heat networks is they can be fuelled by multiple technologies, including waste heat – such as from the
London Underground – meaning they are renewable in that sense. This does mean that local authorities are more open to heat networks so being aware of how to connect a heating system to a network would be valuable. Ultimately, whilst policy and regulation is still being discussed, and viable technologies are still up for debate, it would be a good idea for any installer to get on the front foot, stretch their skillset and be prepared for any situation that comes in the future. Whatever the energy mix will look like, it is certain that it won’t be just solely boiler or heat pump technology, it will be varied, so to be technology agnostic in training can only reap reward. Heat networks Finally, heat networks. This is a technology that is growing rapidly and not just for the new build sector. Many retrofit projects now adopt heat networks across a whole

THINKING
Following the launch of the Electric Heating Company’s new Mercury Electric Combi Boiler PHPI caught up with the company’s Service & Technical Manager, Chris Allan, to find out more about the new boiler and the versatility of electric heating solutions.
Q
Why has the Electric Heating Company developed the Mercury Electric Combi Boiler? With the move towards greener heating alternatives we are experiencing a rise in customer enquiries for Electric Heating Systems. With space at a premium in most UK homes the most common question from customers moving from gas to electric is: “I’m looking for an electric combi boiler.” Due to the increase in demand we embarked on our journey to create the Mercury Combi Boiler.
which boasts rapid heat up times and higher flow rate performances.
Q
What are the key features of the new boiler?
Q
What type of property is the Mercury Electric Combi best suited to?
The Mercury Combi Boiler is designed for the future and brings a new era to the electric boiler market with the introduction of External Weather Compensation to automatically modulate the boiler temperature based on outside temperatures. The Bare-Wire Heating Element technology for Domestic Hot Water are more robust in tackling the formation of lime scale due to operating at higher temperatures with a lower surface area. The Mercury also features advanced service diagnostics.
Electric Combi Boilers in general are not suitable for all property types due to hot water flow rate requirements, which are hindered due to restrictions on incoming power supplies. In general the single phase Mercury Combi is best suited to one and two bed properties which have a shower and sink outlets. For larger properties the Mercury Combi is available in three phase,

The introduction of Net Zero and the move from gas to electric in new build properties from 2025 heralds an exciting future for new generation electric products.
Q
Can it be used in properties which have a bath, or would you suggest an alternative solution?
UK building legislations states that the minimum boiler capacity to fill a bath with instantaneous hot water is 18kW. Single phase electric combi boilers are limited to 14.4kW meaning they are not suitable to fill a bath in a reasonable time frame. Properties are better served by storing hot water in an unvented cylinder or use a storage combi, like our Comet Combination Unit. For properties with three phase power supplies the Mercury Combi boiler is available in 19kW and 26kW which can be used with baths, showers, and other tap outlets.
Q
What are the advantages of using an electric boiler for the provision of heating and domestic hot water?
Electric boilers are continually becoming an increasingly viable option for heating properties due to lower upfront installation costs compared to gas, oil or LPG systems and have no flue requirement, with the added benefits of low maintenance, rapid heat up times and high efficiency. The introduction of Net Zero and the move from gas to electric in new build properties from 2025 heralds an exciting future for new generation electric products.
Q
Are there any limitations as to where the Mercury Combi can be installed?
Electric boilers can be installed anywhere within a property as they do not require a flue, meaning there are no limitations to location and no requirement for an external wall. For more details on the Mercury Electric Combi Boiler from the Electric Heating Company please www.rdr.link/paa006

HEATING & RENEWABLES
A day in the life of an...
OFTEC INSPECTOR John Vinter, Inspection Services Manager at OFTEC, shares an insight into the day to day work of his team at this crucial time for the sector.
T
he government is ramping up its net-zero agenda with homes firmly in its sights. OFTEC and its industry partners are advocating the use of renewable liquid fuels, such as HVO, to help rural homes on oil transition to an affordable green future. However, heat pumps and other renewable technologies will also play a major role in the transition to low carbon heating, so OFTEC’s registration service has expanded to support all the common off-gas grid technologies. Whichever technology is being used, the heating sector needs to demonstrate high levels of competence and professionalism to instil confidence amongst consumers. OFTEC inspectors have a central role to play in this. Here’s why…
Why do technicians need inspecting? The inspection process is not there to catch technicians out; the vast majority do an incredible job. Our role is to help technicians achieve and maintain those high standards. For technicians, a key benefit of OFTEC registration is self-certifying that work has been carried out to the correct standard. Therefore, the government requires OFTEC to have a robust review process in place. OFTEC registration and inspections process helps protect consumers from unscrupulous tradespeople who undercut prices and often carry out sub-standard work, taking business away from the hard working qualified technicians. Non-compliant work also dampens consumer confidence which is bad for the whole industry.
The inspections process When a technician becomes OFTEC registered we conduct an initial evaluation within the first three months. Further inspections are completed during the second and third years, then every five years on a risk based approach. When a business or technician holds multiple scopes of OFTEC registration, ranging from liquid fuel, solid fuel, unvented cylinders, renewables and MCS, each one is inspected separately.
What happens during an inspection? Inspections are planned in advance to fit in with technicians’ busy schedules. Whilst our inspectors need to be thorough, they do everything they can to be flexible as we understand the stresses and strains of running a business. The inspection begins with a review of the relevant paperwork (public liability insurance, complaints log, waste carriers licence, technical books etc.), followed by an on-site visit to a recent installation. This is agreed with the relevant customer. The inspection itself is non-invasive to minimise disruption but the relevant safety checks are always performed. Our inspector will also ask the technician about their work. The whole process typically lasts up to three hours.
Resolving non-compliance There are three levels of non-compliance as part of the inspection feedback: major, minor and observation. For major and minor non-conformities, we draw these to the attention of the technician and provide 28 days for resolution. Observations are strong recommendations for future work and a way of progressing improvement.
16 NOVEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Who are our inspectors? OFTEC has eleven inspectors to cover all regions of UK & Ireland. All our inspectors have worked in the industry and run their own heating business so they understand the challenges technicians face. Over 90% of their time is spent in the field with the remaining allocated to planning inspections and arranging visits.
Inspecting the inspectors Our inspectors themselves are also observed several times a year to ensure they are following OFTEC’s procedures. They hold the same qualifications as technicians and are required to undertake Continual Professional Development and keep up to date with industry news and manufacturer publications. OFTEC itself is also checked by UKAS.
The future for off-grid heating Significant progress has been made towards enhancing industry standards and protecting both consumers and technicians. As the heating sector becomes increasingly multifaceted, OFTEC inspectors will continue to play a key part in this process, expertly supporting technicians across the full range of off-grid heating solutions to ensure homeowners are equipped with the right option for their home. Navien explains how its LCB700 Blue Flame oil boiler helped to upgrade the heating in a Scottish family home.
SYSTEM UPGRADE W
hen an old, inefficient atmospheric boiler at a family home in Coalburn, South Lanarkshire began to fail, a replacement was needed to ensure the 3-bedroom semi-detached property had sufficient heating and hot water. The homeowners consulted their local installer and, as a result, an external Navien LCB700 Blue Flame oil boiler was deemed the ideal upgrade. The Navien boiler (and accompanying Smart Plus control) was fitted by Lanark-based John Grainger Plumbing & Heating. Once the system was up and running outside the property, the new blue flame A+ rated oil boiler with Smart Plus technology proved to be extremely economical and efficient. Commenting on the boiler, John Grainger, owner of John Grainger Plumbing & Heating, said: “I was already familiar with Navien, having read up on them and seen some product demonstrations. The LCB700 is a well-manufactured boiler, and it was the perfect choice for this project, especially as it was to be sited outside the house, which meant a robust and reliable unit was required.” He added: “In terms of the installation itself, the LCB700 boiler was lightweight
and easily manoeuvrable, while there was also good access to all the parts and components inside. Everything was very straightforward, while Navien helped a lot, providing plenty of assistance and support throughout.” The Navien LCB700 Blue Flame oil boiler uses the latest blue flame burner technology to ensure a high standard of performance and energy efficiency. Benefitting from lift weights from 58kg, all units utilise stainless steel heat exchangers and 60/100mm plastic flues. In addition, the boiler boasts NOx emissions of 57mg/kWh and efficiencies as high as 104%. John continued: “The Navien LCB700 boiler is an excellent product. Their blue flame technology definitely offers something different – I think it’s a fantastic concept likely to be widely embraced even

more in the future. Once I heard about it, I wanted to get involved; it’s such a new style of boiler and burner, with some great technological advances, you can’t help but be impressed. For this particular job, the previous boiler was 20 years old and so inefficient, so the LCB700 should help the family save money on their fuel bills.” Navien’s Smart Plus Control Pack was also installed alongside the oil boiler. Smart Plus helps to deliver energy efficiency and running costs. When the LCB700 Blue Flame range is connected to the Smart Plus Control Pack, it delivers an A+ energy rating, as well as control of up to three zones, for the latest in-home comfort. Homeowner Greg Gormley observed: “The Smart Plus controls are intelligent, mobile and easy to use, while the boiler heats the house very well – the blue flame technology has had a positive effect indeed. What’s more, the unit itself looks a million dollars, so we are over the moon. The ten-year warranty from Navien is definitely a bonus as well, providing us with extra peace of mind, while the aftersales support I’ve received from the company has been amazing; the whole Navien team has been great from the outset, I’d wholeheartedly recommend them.” For more information www.rdr.link/paa008

Steve Skeldon, Product Manager at Wavin, takes a look at the advantages of waterless traps.
GOING WATERLESS A
s the industry picks up again, making sure you have time to work on those bigger, more profitable jobs is vital. Returning to a project just to fix a broken trap in a customer’s property can be frustrating and tedious, so let's look at some alternative trap products you can recommend to keep your customers happy and your schedules more flexible. As water-filled traps use a reservoir of water as a barrier between the home and the wider drainage system, they can be impacted by evaporation, leaking or siphonage. A waterless trap however, such as Wavin’s HepvO, has a self-sealing valve made from a unique membrane, so doesn’t rely on a water reservoir to function. The valve opens in response to water pressure, but will instantly shut tightly when not in use, creating a reliable airtight seal that minimises the risk of failure. HepvO is also not affected by siphonage so won’t allow the escape of foul air into the living space from the drain or sewer.
Confined spaces Aside from the benefit of being a reliable solution, advanced waterless traps like Wavin’s HepvO are also easy to install.
Created with plumbers in mind, they’re designed to be easy to handle and can be installed quickly, with minimal hassle. HepvO even has directional flow arrows making sure this process is as seamless as possible.
The valve opens in response to water pressure, but will instantly shut tightly when not in use, creating a reliable airtight seal Waterless traps tend to be smaller than traditional solutions too, as they don’t need to incorporate a U-bend, so they can be easily used in more confined spaces, like underneath a bath. Their more compact size means they can be fitted both vertically or horizontally too. While products like exposed sinks become increasingly popular, the smaller, sleeker look of a waterless trap also helps
it appear more discreet. So, it can be ideal for customers with minimalist design schemes. Waterless traps, like HepvO are also quieter than regular solutions as they are not prone to that well-known gurgling sound we associate with a sink or bath draining. This makes them ideal for spaces where acoustic comfort is prioritised or a more premium-feel is required. The straight through design and flow rate also prevents possible blockage risks like food waste and sediments.
Additional applications If you’re working on a holiday home or commercial property like a big office, these alternative traps are a great choice. Water-filled traps are more likely to dry out while rooms are vacant, leading to failure and an unpleasant experience for the next person to enter the room. By installing a waterless trap, customers can be assured that their properties will remain odourless, clean and fit-for-purpose when they return. To find out more please www.rdr.link/paa009

PLUMBING & BATHROOMS
Making choices which promote sustainability have become an increasingly important priority. One of the biggest environmental impacts when it comes to the bathroom is water-usage. Ideal Standard’s Chris Barley, Product Manager of Ceramics and Furniture, and Ashleigh Smith, Product Manager of Brassware and Showers have summarised key products and features to look out for.
MAKE ROOM FOR WATER SAVING T here’s a whole host of products on the market that are designed to help homeowners to lessen their water usage in the bathroom. As an installer, your customer will of course look to you for advice and there are many different ways you can help them achieve their goals.
Taps
A small fixture – but one that can potentially cause a lot of waste water. Leaking taps can lead to over 5,500 litres of wasted water in just one year. This often occurs in older suites, so if your customer is looking for an affordable way of reducing their water usage in the bathroom, it’s a good idea to suggest replacing their taps. Working in a similar way to the alternative showerheads, low-flow taps restrict the water flow. Not only an affordable option for customers, these fittings are just as easy to replace as a showerhead, making it another quick and easy job. All Ideal Standard taps come with water-saving flow restrictors as standard, and this can be removed if needed.
Showers
It’s widely understood that showers are often a much more efficient option, compared with baths, when it comes to water usage. But even shower systems can be improved. By just replacing the showerhead, customers could see a massive reduction in how much water is used in a standard ten-minute shower. It may be a small change, but the results are staggering. Switching to a low-flow showerhead may reduce the water by half – from 120 litres to just 60 litres. There is often an assumption that opting for a low-flow showerhead means compromising on performance. But in reality, innovations in this area mean that these showerheads perform just as well, if not better. This is a quick job for installers, as it’s only the showerhead that needs replacing, this can be done easily with minimal hassle.
Toilets
A leaky toilet is one of the main culprits of wasting water in the home. Did you know that faulty toilets can waste up to 400 litres a day? So, if your customer wants to cut down on water use this is definitely a great place to start. By replacing a leaky toilet with a dual-flushing model, customers will be able to use the half-flush function. Although some customers may be concerned about the cleanliness of these types of toilets, new technology in water distribution means that the entire bowl is covered with every flush. This means that these models are not only water-saving, but will also help your customers to increase overall hygiene levels. Ideal Standard’s AquaBlade technology, for example, ensures that 100% of the bowl is cleaned with every flush, thanks to the powerful waterjets that flush away bacteria evenly, whilst also eliminating splashing and reducing cleaning time.
These changes may seem small, but they massively reduce water usage within the bathroom, which is key to helping customers improve the overall sustainability of their home. For more information on Ideal Standard’s products please www.rdr.link/paa010

Ann Boardman, Head of Marketing and Product Management at Saniflo UK, talks about how to provide living spaces in those hard to reach places by using a combination of macerators, pumps and other clever solutions.
PROVIDE LIVING SPACES IN hard to reach PLACES
H
ow often do you come across an attic, a basement, an under-the-stairs cupboard, a space in a large bedroom, or even a garage that could be converted into extra living space if only it had a water supply and drainage? This can be the case with older buildings, in particular. Many plumbers and installers lose out on business opportunities because they’re unfamiliar with the possibilities available for providing kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms in what most people would consider to be inaccessible spaces. However, there is a whole host of possibilities to provide extra, useful living space in the most awkward of spaces, even when there is no mains drainage. All that’s required is a water supply and carefully selected products to provide drainage.
Basement refurbishment You might think that providing basement living space in an old Grade I listed building is an impossible task. Just recently one such property – a Guest House in Edinburgh – underwent a refurb to provide basement living space comprising a sitting room, bedroom and
Replacing a shower enclosure can also be straightforward. In this case, a new, high-quality lightweight, low level shower tray – a 1600mm white and just 40mm thick and featuring a fine textured anti-slip surface and a shower cubicle with 900 fixed panel with 450mm pivot section were selected to create a large ingress and spacious shower.
Removing the waste bathroom. The small, but perfectly formed bathroom was only possible thanks to a solution that pumps waste up and away to the drain at street level. A very old, functioning pump, plus an old-fashioned shower and sink were removed in readiness for new wall-hung sanitaryware. This required an alternative pumping solution and a solution combining a macerator, frame and a push button cistern, which was installed behind a wall. A stylish cladding solution of white glass covers the frame and the wall hung WC was attached to the frame through the glass panel – which is split into two halves for ease of maintenance. The whole unit provides low noise levels of just 47dB(A).

In this case, it was essential to have a product that can take the waste from the shower and sink as well as the WC. The discharge pipes go up the wall and across the ceiling to a store cupboard in the hallway where it taps into the external downpipe into the drain. A macerator also features in one of guest bathrooms of this property and the owners claim that the room couldn’t have en-suite without it. Macerators and pumps really do enable the addition of bathrooms, especially in older properties with old plumbing infrastructure. To find out more about Saniflo’s solutions www.rdr.link/paa011 please

THE INCLUSIVE BATHROOM
W
ith young people finding it harder to get on the property ladder and older people at risk of isolation, more families are choosing to live in one house and share the same space. In fact, around 1.8 million homes now span two or more adult generations, up 38% since 2009. In part, this is being driven by millennials who are struggling to leave home due to rising house prices – 20% of 25–35-year-olds, for example, still live with their parents. Crucially, the UK also has an aging population. Currently, there are 11.8 million people over 65, which is forecasted to grow to 18.5 million by 2040. Estimates suggest that these converging factors will result in multi-generational housing tripling by 2040.
Catering for everyone Despite being one of the smallest rooms in the home, a blend of restricted space, humidity, water, and the range of tasks that need to be carried out, makes bathroom safety crucial. For older individuals, mobility and visual impairment needs to be accounted for, while younger generations will also have specific care needs, such as careful temperature
An aging population and growing numbers of multi-generational households have shifted the typical demographic of a UK home, which can have significant repercussions when specifying a bathroom. Martyn Brown, Contracts and Technical Manager at Triton Showers, explains.
showers have the minimum number of variables. Figures from the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) also suggest that one in five people aged 75 and over are living with sight loss, so look out for showers that carry BEAB, BEAB Care and the RNIB Approvals.
Remote stop/start button – helps to ensure that the shower is already at the correct temperature when the user enters it. They are also important in cases of emergency, allowing carers to stop the shower should a trip or slip have occurred.
Layout – the shower cubicle or walk-in enclosure needs to be as spacious as the room will allow. Being too cramped makes it difficult for an individual to get in and out. Obstructions and hazards should also be avoided.
Grab bars and riser rails – these are safety features designed to help a person to maintain balance, stand for longer without tiring, hold some of their weight while moving around, or have something to grasp in case of a slip or fall. Dual purpose riser bars, that also function as a grab rail, are also available for added support while showering. These products can reduce the need for a separate rail, remove clutter, and help decrease the overall cost of a shower installation.
Intuitive and ergonomic controls – complex controls can be confusing, so for multi-generational households, the best
Shower seating – getting this right is particularly important for some users, enabling people to adopt a more
control. This is why inclusivity has to be at the heart of bathroom installations. The following points are some of the key safety features to consider:

Installation considerations
comfortable position while showering, thus reducing fatigue levels. The seat should always be fitted at ’90 degrees to the shower unit to allow it to be controlled with ease from a seated position.
The sheer number of shower safety factors to consider makes it vital the chosen solution is as straightforward as possible to fit. Triton’s Omnicare Ultra and Ultra+ are examples of products that are equipped to meet the needs of multiple generations, addressing all of the issues outlined above. Crucially, the range has been designed with a specific emphasis on ease of installation, including retrofit applications where a previous shower is being replaced.
The PASA Test To help tradespeople and specifiers ensure they are providing the right solutions, Triton has developed the PASA Test (Purpose, Accessibility, Safety, and Aesthetics). This serves as a checklist to cover off the most important aspects of shower design as outlined above, and can be a useful prompt when working on a bathroom that is suitable for people of all ages. Purpose – have you taken an end-user first approach to ensure products have the correct functionality and if necessary, the safety credentials are fit for purpose? Accessibility – is the shower area fully accessible for everyone living in a multi-generational home? Safety – does it minimise risk and maximise user safety?
Final thoughts
Aesthetics – is the bathroom and shower area a stylish and welcoming part of the home? While the last point may seem out of place in a safety checklist, a person’s home is a place they will take pride in. Providing solutions that are not just practical, but look the part too, can go a long way to making a bathroom stand out.
As a result of an aging population and more multi-generational households, there is a mounting need for fit-for-purpose fixtures and fittings to be installed in homes. They have to meet the demands of the young, the elderly, and the vulnerable. Nowhere is this challenge greater than in bathroom specification. WATER TREATMENT
CLEAN UP
We caught up with Richard Crisp, Head of Chemistry at Fernox to ask him some of the common questions installers have about maintaining the efficiency of domestic and commercial heating systems.
Q
Q
Whilst the maintenance of both domestic and commercial heating systems is similar, there are some key nuances to be aware of. To ensure best practice, it is worth familiarising yourself with the recommendations outlined in the latest guidance documents.
As outlined above, even brand new systems will require cleaning on installation as well as throughout their lifetime to comply with the latest guidance. Using a cleaner like Fernox Cleaner F3 can breathe new life into the system by removing debris, restoring energy efficiency and extending the system and boiler life. A popular method of cleaning is powerflushing, which works by sending water at a high speed through the system to shift debris, limescale and sludge build-up. To aid the process (especially in heavily contaminated systems), Fernox Power Cleaner F8 can be used. For commercial systems, BSRIA BG 29 recommends completing a biocide wash to disinfect the system water fully. This prevents bacterial contamination and fungal growth and can be completed using products such as Fernox Biocide F7 as a cleaner. A biocide should be used in conjunction with an inhibitor like Fernox Protector F1 to ensure full system protection against corrosion and scale.
What guidance documents do installers need to follow for both domestic and commercial projects?
What are the key points to know about cleaning domestic and commercial systems?
Domestic For domestic projects, BS 7593:2019 details how to ensure system efficiency and longevity using the following steps: ● Clean – using a recognised method such as powerflushing, mains pressure or gravity cleaning. ● Guard – install an in-line system filter to capture any contaminants and prevent them from circulating through the system. ● Protect – dose with inhibitor to prevent sludge, scale and debris formation. ● Maintain – clean the filter during the annual boiler service to remove any contaminants collected. ● Test – inhibitor levels should be checked on site annually and via laboratory testing every five years.
Commercial When undertaking a commercial project, BSRIA BG 29 and BSRIA BG 50 are the most important guidance documents to follow in order to ensure compliance: ● BSRIA BG 29 – advises on the commissioning of systems and recommends using an appropriate cleaner to remove any sludge, scale or
debris and completing a biocide wash to disinfect the water fully. System water should be tested at the commissioning stage, after it has been cleaned and dosed with inhibitor. ● BSRIA BG 50 – provides guidance on ongoing protection and maintenance and advocates the installation of in-line system filters. Both guidance documents should be used in conjunction with each other to ensure the smooth running of the system. Other useful documents include the ICOM Water Treatment and Conditioning of Commercial Heating Systems Guide, and the work of the Closed Systems Control Association (CSCA).

Q
What products are available to ease the testing process for domestic and commercial projects? Testing is the key to remaining one step ahead of any problems and provide a seamless service to customers.
032_PHPI_NOV21_Layout 1 04/10/2021 16:13 Page 33
Domestic
Commercial
As outlined in BS 7593:2019, domestic systems should be tested after commissioning and annually throughout the life of the system. Not only is testing important to comply with the latest guidance documents, it is also required for compliance with many boiler warranties. For quick and easy testing, the Fernox Express Inhibitor Test can be used to check the concentration of inhibitor in the central heating system water and provide an instant pass or fail result. In order to comply with BS 7593:2019 and ensure full system protection, inhibitor levels should be checked annually throughout its life cycle with a full laboratory analysis of the system water performed every five years. This can be completed with a simple postal test such as the easy and convenient Fernox Water Quality Test – which can be used in conjunction with the Fernox Water Test App to enable easy tracking and monitoring of results.
Similar to domestic projects, commercial systems require testing on commissioning and at regular intervals thereafter to prolong the life span of the system and ensure there is sufficient level of inhibitor in the system water. To do this, products such as the Fernox System Health Check provide a simple solution for testing that requires minimal installer input. The kit has everything the installer needs to take a sample of the system water to send off to the Fernox laboratory for testing – which includes whether there is any debris or cleaner residue present and if the system has been treated and dosed correctly. Fernox will then advise if the system is fully protected – or will provide details on the appropriate treatment. Fernox has a range of water treatment products that can help across both domestic and commercial projects. To find www.rdr.link/paa014 out more

GO WITH THE DUAL FLOW BoilerMagXC is Spear & Jackson’s new small filter for domestic heating systems.
L
aunched in July, Spear & Jackson’s new BoilerMagXC has been developed to offer installers an effective, compact magnetic filter for domestic heating systems. The unit uses magnetic technology to deliver a dual flow system which the company says is ‘guaranteed not to block’. Water is exposed to the magnet twice in one pass, maximising magnetite extraction relative to filter size. National Sales Manager, Craig Worth, said: “The BoilerMagXC is a filter that promises to compete against the biggest names in the market. It’s a small piece of technology that can make a huge impact on domestic heating. Restricted space is a problem that installers face regularly. By utilising our patented dual flow technology, we were able to create a product that ticks many boxes for both our distribution partners and installers.” Featuring an in-line installation, that enables installation on both horizontal and vertical pipework, the extraction chamber of the XC has been minimised whilst retaining what the company calls a ‘high level’ of black iron oxide removal from heating systems. “Our manufacturing team have worked tirelessly to produce a product that will fill a prominent gap in our product range. Reducing the size of the filter, whilst still maintaining the product quality and efficiency for which our brand is renowned,” Craig explained.
Cleaning up Cleaning the unit is straightforward, achieved by removing the magnet sleeve and rinsing. The filter also helps installers comply with BS 7593:2019 – the British Standard for preparation, commission and maintenance of domestic central heating and cooling water systems. Craig continued: “The BoilermagXC is part of the wider Boilermag range which includes filters, chemicals and scale reducers for effective heating system treatment. The range offers improved heating efficiency and reduces costly breakdowns and maintenance. Adding to the range that also caters to commercial and industrial heating systems with our BoilerMag XL

A deaerator such as the SpiroVent RV2 will help remove microbubbles from a heating system
WATER TREATMENT
Recognising that some form of water treatment is required is just the first step when upgrading heating system performance; the next is to identify which solution is going to be most suitable based on the system set-up. Dave Goodyer, Area Sales Manager for Spirotech, explains which products should be used when.
SELECT A Suitable SOLUTION F
rom deaerators and dirt separators for domestic properties, through to hydraulic balancers and degassers for larger domestic and light commercial jobs with multiple zones, there’s plenty of options out there to choose from, when it comes to system protection and enhancing performance, efficiency and reliability. So, which solution should you be using?
Spirotech's SpiroTrap MB3 can be used for dirt separation

in a heating system. If left untreated, microbubbles will eventually be reabsorbed into the system water, where the oxygen will then react with any ferrous internal surfaces and gradually corrode the system, creating the magnetite collected by dirt separators such as the SpiroTrap MB3. By fitting a deaerator like the SpiroVent RV2, you can remove air from a system, preventing the conditions for corrosion to occur and magnetite to form. While deaerators and dirt separators such as the SpiroVent RV2 and SpiroTrap MB3 can be used for both domestic and light commercial applications, the size of the installation will determine what type of products are required. The SpiroCross AX combines Deaerator Light commercial hydraulic balancing, deaeration and dirt separation For the very best results, it projects are often bigger is recommended that a than domestic systems and deaerator should be installed alongside a so require larger pipework. A dirt separator, such as the SpiroTrap MB3, should be fitted on the return and works by capturing dirt and magnetite from the system water, before it can enter the boiler and re-circulate around the system. As well as helping to contribute to the overall health of the system, a dirt separator also helps prevent cold spots on radiators and noisy pipework, which both can be troublesome for customers.

available in connections up to 2”, which may cover off some light commercial systems. However, for any pipework larger than this, the steel version of these units would be required, which are available with larger connection sizes.
Combined air and dirt removal units A combined air and dirt removal product, like the SpiroCombi MB3, is ideal for systems where there may be limited space to fit both a deaerator and dirt separator separately. Depending on the job, where a combined unit should be installed will vary. On a new system, where there is no pre-existing build-up of dirt, it should be fit on the flow. For older systems where there may be existing dirt and magnetite that needs to be removed, it should be fit on the return to capture these contaminants before they re-enter the boiler.
Hydraulic balancing units For systems with multiple zones, a hydraulic separator may be required to ensure the circuits do not interfere with each other and cause system inefficiencies. A hydraulic separator, such as the SpiroCross, should be considered in systems where primary and secondary pumps are used; when primary and secondary flows are not equal; or when a constant primary flow is required. A well-designed hydraulic separator will not only perform hydraulic balancing, but will also have both deaeration and dirt separation capabilities too.
Degassing units Used in light commercial jobs, a small degassing unit is ideally suited for low temperature and low pressure systems, where it is hard to predict where air will be released. Like with typical domestic systems, if left untreated, the presence of air will lead to the formation of magnetite and contribute to overall poor-running of the system, often resulting in higher running costs and the SpiroVent Superior S250 need for more frequent maintenance. A mini vacuum degasser, such as the SpiroVent Superior S250, creates its own environment to release gases from the fluid, meaning it is not dependent on a specific location in the system; no matter where it is installed, it will remove air. The unit works by drawing off a portion of the saturated fluid in the system, then creating an ‘under pressure’ in the vacuum vessel of the unit that causes dissolved gases to be released. These liberated gases accumulate at the top and can then be expelled. Over time, as air inevitably finds its way back into the system during maintenance, water replenishment or from any leaks, the vacuum degasser can be set to operate at regular intervals to maintain an efficient balance between degassing and energy consumption. WATER TREATMENT
REMOVE
DEEP SEATED
A full system flush will help ensure a heating system is free from magnetite and other sludge. However, given that it can be a significant expense for homeowners, it’s important to help them understand why it’s a worthwhile procedure. Colin Yearp from ADEY addresses some of the common questions installers get asked and looks at how information from manufacturers can help to back up your case to customers.
Q
The customer is having a filter fitted to the system. Why should I also carry out a flush? A magnetic filter like MagnaClean helps to maintain a clean system by capturing the sludge within the filter as water passes through. However, a filter will only collect mobile debris which is moving within the system. In a heavily sludged up heating system, there could be a great deal of corrosion settled in the radiators and pipework which can’t be removed by filters alone. To shift heavily settled magnetite and rust, a cleaner will need to be added to the system so that it can circulate and lift the sludge inside the pipework and radiators.
Q
The customer’s system is quite old and they are concerned that flushing it could cause more damage than good. Is this true?
Powerflushing can be a harsh process, which can put older systems at risk of leaks if the pressure is higher than it can tolerate so we understand why some customers might be concerned. The ADEY MagnaCleanse system uses the heat and flow from the boiler to deliver a fast and effective, yet gentle flushing process, making it ideal for all systems, including older ones. The MagnaCleanse flushing process also includes the Vibraclean agitator to dislodge more stubborn sludge build-up from the base of the radiators without needing to remove them.
Q
The customer is having a new boiler installed. Do I still need to flush the system?
38 NOVEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
No. Although the old boiler is taken out of use, sludge will remain in existing pipework and radiators and damage the new boiler from day one. In fact, for 60% of new boilers which break down within their first year of operation, the cause is sludge*. Think of it like a new car... you wouldn’t put old oil in a new car and expect it to work to its full efficiency. So flushing a heating system with a new boiler installed will help ensure that it will perform at its very best and reduce future issues.
Q
Considering that a system flush is a significant expense for customers, how can installers convince them that it’s a worthwhile procedure?
038_PHPI_NOV21_Layout 1 04/10/2021 15:42 Page 39
In a heavily sludged up heating system, there could be a great deal of corrosion settled in the radiators and pipework Independent research carried out by ADEY revealed that sludge is the number one cause of boiler breakdowns in the UK*. A proper system flush to fully remove sludge will reduce the chances of the customer’s boiler breaking down, which can be costly to repair or even replace. Their radiators can gain up to 47% more heat* without using more energy because the system will work more efficiently. As a result, they could save up to £80 a year in their energy bill and lower their carbon emissions by 7%*. If the homeowner would like reassurance from a third party that the recommendations you are giving to them is correct, it’s a good idea to use resources
from manufacturers and suppliers to back up your proposals. Having a water testing solution such as ADEY ProCheck up your sleeve can open the door to discussing remedial actions, such as system flushing or inhibitor dosing by showing customers visually what is going on, on-the-spot. Providing access to key data connected to the main causes of poor water quality in a system is crucial and its instant lab-style results check for indications of corrosion, turbidity and pH levels, and means that action can be agreed without delay, reducing the need for return visits, and keeping costs down for homeowners. To further bring the effect that poor water quality can have to life, ADEY has produced a useful video for homeowners to help them understand the damage sludge can do to their heating systems, and how it can be removed and kept at bay. Ideal for convincing those unsure why this treatment is being suggested. *Based on independent research commissioned by ADEY

WATER TREATMENT
DYNAMIC
DUO Intergas adds a new chemical pack to its System filter.
T
he Intergas System Filter, made in collaboration with Fernox, is now being paired with the company’s new chemical pack to give installers the ability to protect the whole heating system when installing a new boiler. The pack comprises the system filter, a bottle of Fernox FI Inhibitor and a bottle of Fernox F3 Cleaner – their 265ml size means the contents fit exactly into the filter’s chamber, so there’s no wasted chemicals. Intergas says a single dose of the F3 265ml Cleaner will treat an average domestic heating system of 100 litres, up to 12 radiators or 190 sqm of underfloor heating, as will a single dose of the F1 Inhibitor. Intergas’s rationale for developing the pack for installers is to make it easy to comply with the Manufacturer’s Warranty and BS 7593:2019. It also wants to promote the use of quality products to protect and maintain its boilers.
Water quality Intergas says that a high proportion of boilers that fail in the first year do so because of poor water quality. By initially chemically cleaning, flushing and treating the system and introducing regular testing and re-dosing, the efficiency and life expectancy of most domestic central heating systems can be improved. Whether the filter is bought as part of the Intergas System Filter and Chemical Pack or on its own, two more years will be added to the boiler’s warranty. To be eligible, installers must fit the filter and boiler on the
The system filter can be installed on horizontal or vertical pipework and comes with a 15-year warranty same date, in line with the Manufacturer’s Instructions, and both warranties registered with Intergas at the same time. The System Filter includes a 22mm spigot isolation valve (for the bottom connection) and Fernox’s Hydronic Particle Separation with magnetic filtration, which removes magnetic and non-magnetic system debris.

The TF1 Omega flushing adapter, which is available separately, is designed to make it easier to flush and clean the entire system from the filter point at full flow rate. The spigot valve works in conjunction with the boiler return valve to isolate the filter or, using just the spigot valve and boiler flow valve, installers can drain the boiler down via the filter’s flushing/draining valve. The system filter can be installed on horizontal or vertical pipework and comes with a 15-year warranty. Made entirely from metal, it’s also 100% recyclable. WELLBEING RANGE Monarch Water has developed a range of products designed to deliver healthy drinking water including purified, filtered and instant boiling water drinking systems.
T
he Wellbeing Water Purifiers range includes the Capricorn, Libra and Gemini reverse osmosis systems, which use a five-stage filtration process to produce pure, refreshing water. Using semi-permeable 0.0001uM membranes the water purifiers are designed to remove scale, scum, heavy metals, chemicals and microorganisms from water. The units also re-mineralise post filter, replenishing naturally-occurring minerals such as magnesium, potassium and zinc. This process is achieved using mineral balls containing sustainable coconut carbon, designed to not only infuse the water with minerals, but also refresh the taste and adjust the odour.
Water filters The company’s Wellbeing Carbon Block Filters have been designed to reduce and remove unwanted impurities in water such as scale, chlorine, herbicides and pesticides – to produce clean, ultra-clear and fresh-tasting water. The filters feature auto-shut-off heads, allowing cartridges to be changed without turning off the water supply. Although compact, these filters have capacities of 10,000 litres (LSF140), 2,400 litres (LSF240) and 5,600 (upgrade-details available upon request). They also come with a Bari tap as standard.
Taps Monarch’s Wellbeing collection of Three-Way Taps include the Aries, Taurus and Virgo. Crafted in Italy, these taps provide drinking water in addition to cold and hot water, using a tri-flow design from two levers. The taps also come complete with the company’s LSF140 Carbon Block Filters. Meanwhile, Monarch’s Instant Boiling Kettle Taps dispense 98°C hot water through a choice of two faucets. The Scorpio delivers instant hot water while the Aquarius also dispenses cold filtered water. These taps have also been designed with safety in mind, featuring child proof locks on all hot water levers and are made from anti-scald material.
The Wellbeing Range has been designed to enhance and enrich the wellbeing of consumers by providing healthy and tasty drinking water Both taps come with the company’s LSF240 Carbon Block Filters as standard. They come with compact under-the-sink hot water tanks to fit under a kitchen sink. “The Wellbeing Range has been designed to enhance and enrich the wellbeing of consumers by providing healthy and tasty drinking water,” says Kevin Johnson MD of Monarch Water and Chairman of BEAMA (water softener division). “These products can also help improve energy efficiency and eliminate the need for single-use plastic – offering a sustainable solution for quality drinking water at home.”

IDEAL HEATING LAUNCHES POD HEATING INTERFACE UNIT Ideal Heating has launched a new Heat Interface Unit (HIU) designed to support the growth of energy efficient heat networks in the UK. POD has been designed for use in centralised heat networks, which can be powered by a range of heat sources such as gas boilers, heat pumps, Combined Heat and Power engines, biomass or waste heat from industrial or commercial processes. The POD HIU transfers the thermal energy from the heat network to the heating and hot water systems in dwellings. The unit comes in two models: POD Indirect is a twin plate appliance to provide complete separation from the heat network for both heating and hot water. It is available in nominal hot water outputs of 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70kW, with 5kW for heating. POD Direct is a single plate appliance, enabling heat from the network directly into the heating system of a dwelling. Hot water is provided indirectly in nominal outputs of 30, 40, 50 & 60kW. Darren Finley, Chief Commercial Officer - Commercial Products at Ideal Heating, said: “With gas boilers in new build homes banned from 2025, forward-thinking developers are looking for energy efficient alternatives. POD can be used in large district networks, which may cover several connected buildings, or smaller community networks, which may only incorporate a single multi-occupancy building.” “They are easy to maintain and service and heat networks can realise lower emissions, greater efficiency and therefore lower bills, effectively futureproofing a development for both those running and inhabiting it.” POD is compatible with Ideal Heating’s Halo Lite smart thermostat.
