One eye on the future... News about heat pumps has dominated the sector in recent weeks and months. In April the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme was opened – with grants of £5,000 or £6,000 available for installations of air source heat pumps or ground source heat pumps respectively. Then there is the requirement for all new-build homes to have low carbon heating solutions fitted from 2025. With the deadline only a few years away, the move has put increased focus on how heating is generated and distributed in new properties. Homebuilders of all sizes are now increasingly considering heat pumps. You can read more about one housebuilder’s Heat Pump installations on page 8. Additionally, in the Spring Statement, Chancellor Rishi Sunak MP reduced the amount of VAT on energy efficiency measures for homes, including heat pumps. These solutions will now have a VAT rate of zero for the next five years. You can read more about this move and the reaction from the sector on page 6. Heat pumps come with the promise of energy efficiency and lower CO2 emissions. They are a technology that is on the rise. And they have government backing – the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is set to cost the exchequer around £450million pounds over the next three years. However, as all installers will know, the majority of day-to-day work in the heating sector revolves around gas and oil boilers, and this is unlikely to change in the near future. Sales of domestic boilers have remained strong in recent years, despite the challenges of the pandemic. Although the wider news agenda has quite rightly shifted toward events in Ukraine in recent months, the challenge for the UK to meet its carbon emission targets remains. Heat pumps will play a growing part, as will other solutions including heat networks, hybrid systems and alternative fuels. Possibly, at some point in the future, hydrogen will also become more of a consideration. Trials are ongoing across a number of pilot projects including a neighbourhood trial in Fife next year. Heating engineers face a juggling act. Keeping an eye on where the sector is headed, and the technologies that are emerging, but while focusing on the vital day-to-day support they provide to homeowners and residents. WORCESTER BOSCH LAUNCHES ENVIRONMENT 2050 COMPETITION Worcester Bosch has re-launched its Environment Awards with a new sustainability-focused criteria aimed at installers. The Environment 2050 competition encourages installers to work with customers to make environmentally-friendly choices for their heating and hot water system, while keeping longevity and sustainability in mind when opting for new installs.

VAT CUT ON HEAT PUMPS Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak MP has removed VAT from a number of energy efficiency measures including heat pumps. In the Spring Statement, issued in March, he announced that the rate of VAT on heat pumps and solar panels, along with other energy efficiency measures, would be cut from 5% to zero for the next five years. The move has been widely welcomed by the sector. Carl Arntzen, CEO of Worcester Bosch, said: “We welcome the Chancellor’s removal of VAT on heat pumps, solar panels and other energy-efficiency measures. We feel that this will support the needed transition of UK homes towards a net zero future.” Phil Hurley, Chair of the Heat Pump Association said: “The HPA has been working hard behind the scenes calling for financial incentives to tackle the barriers to heat pump uptake, and the decision to cut VAT from 5% to zero on energy-saving measures is an important step forward.” Henk van den Berg, Strategic Business Manager, Heating & Renewables Daikin UK, said: “Removing VAT from heat pumps and other green measures is a positive step as it will make it easier for households who want to be more energy efficient. This move will also give the green light to many households contemplating a heat pump under this year’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme.”

Entry criteria To enter installers need to submit a short written statement on why they chose to install a particular product through a form online. An image of the installation is also required. There will be a total of 16 installer winners, consisting of four winners per season, in four categories (boilers, heat pumps, solar, hybrids) who will each receive a range of prizes including an 18V cordless Bosch Drill and £200 towards a charity of their choice. ONE IN THREE TRADESWOMEN EXPERIENCE GENDER DISCRIMINATION

The cost of carrying out home improvements increased 17% in January, compared to the average prices paid in 2021, according to the latest data from CHECKATRADE. Categories worst affected include building (+38%) and tiling (+29%). Plumbing rose by 19%. Inflation, material price increases and intense customer demand are all thought to be behind the price rises.

GRANT UK has launched the ‘Net Zero Heating Show’ – a podcast covering low carbon heating solutions featuring industry experts and engineers. Amongst the topics are the Government’s decarbonisation strategy, how installer businesses can adapt with the transition to renewables and the different ways heat pumps can be installed. For details turn to page 51.

39% of tradeswomen say they’re not taken seriously because of their gender and almost one in 10 say customers have refused to let them do a job because they’re a woman – according to a new study by the find-a-tradesperson platform, Rated People. The survey also found that one in seven (15%) have had personal safety concerns when working. It indicated that less than 2% of plumbers are women. The findings are taken from the 2022 edition of Rated People’s Home Improvement Trends Report, where researchers spoke to more than 600 tradespeople across the UK about working in the industry, and over 2,000 homeowners about their attitudes to hiring tradeswomen. The survey also indicated there is a growing demand from UK homeowners – nearly half (46%) say they’d definitely hire a tradeswoman, 43% have no preference, while 11% of UK homeowners say they’d prefer a tradesman. Adrienne Minster, CEO of Rated People commented: “We’ve long valued individuality, diversity and inclusion at Rated People. Empowering more women and people across the gender spectrum to build successful careers in trades services is a priority for us. There’s still a lot to be done, but it’s a challenge we’re embracing.” To see Rated People’s Home Improvement Trends Report, please www.rdr.link/paf 036

Neil Sawers, Commercial Technical Manager at Grant UK asks – are consumers ready for renewables? Consumer demand is one of the most influential factors when it comes to increasing uptake of renewable heating. While Government strategy can influence long-term behavioural changes, homeowners must want to make the switch to renewables.

A dad-of-two suffering with an incurable form of brain cancer is set to receive help from the same charity he volunteered for just a few years ago after receiving his diagnosis. Band of Builders (BoB) volunteer tradespeople from across the UK will descend on Hereford to complete work at the home of Kyle O’Connor, who volunteered himself on a similar project in his home town in 2019. Kyle and his family have been living with an unfinished extension and loft conversion ever since the 41-year-old construction teacher at a local academy suffered a seizure in December 2020, leading to the diagnosis of an aggressive and incurable form of brain cancer. He has since undergone surgery, radiotherapy and is currently receiving a 12-month programme of chemotherapy, meaning the tradesman and former Royal Engineer cannot complete the work himself. “As a time-served carpenter, I know all too well that Kyle will be looking around his home and all he can see are the jobs that need doing – so our team will help put his and his family’s minds at rest, not only that we’ll complete his project but also that it will be up to his standards,” said project lead Jake Anderson. This will be the 24th project to date for BoB, which has more than 10,000 supporters from across the construction industry.

the demand for renewable heating. Homeowners are undoubtably driven to explore alternatives to fossil fuels to reduce their carbon footprint and to get value for money with a long-term heating solution. We launched our dedicated to homeowners researching sustainable heating, and it receives thousands of visits each month and the figures are growing rapidly, which is really encouraging. It is important that consumers are well informed about renewables and that we, as an industry, take them with us on this journey. A low temperature system, using an air source heat pump for example, works differently to a traditional boiler so homeowners need to know what to expect from their new system. Capital and running costs are a concern to homeowners – upgrading a heating system is a significant investment and installing a heat pump will be more expensive than a like-for-like fossil fuel boiler replacement. However, Government funding such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme can help offset some of this additional cost. Manufacturers and installers play an essential part in educating consumers to ensure they make informed decisions about their home heating. Grant is here to help, from researching heat pumps, biofuels and other renewable heating options through to exploring how to get a home ‘Low Temp’ ready. SPECIAL REPORT | Wiring

CONNECT

MORE

Brett Smyth, from electrical manufacturer Ideal Industries, discusses the benefits of switching from terminal strips to lever or push in connectors in heating and plumbing installations.

W

hether you’re installing a new gas boiler or updating a bathroom, electrical wire terminations form part of many heating and plumbing installations. Ensuring they are safe, compliant and consistent is essential, and identifying techniques to make them faster, easier and safer can help you save time on site and ensure a compliant installation. Terminal strips are the traditional technique for completing wire terminations but these are fiddly to install and the potential inconsistency associated with the

tightening of terminal strip screws can sometimes result in snagging issues, particularly for less experienced operatives. In contrast, by switching to lever or push in connectors, installers can save time, while ensuring consistently compliant installation of the electrical elements of their projects. IDEAL Industries’ range of In-Sure Push In, SpliceLine and Gen II Lever Connectors provides a full choice of products that enable cables to be secured in place in seconds, with no screwdriver or crimping and a simple strip, push, connect action. They even include a stripping guide on the side to aid consistently accurate stripping of the cable prior to connection, along with a CPC port for relevant testing. Available in two-, three- or five-port models, Gen II connectors are re-useable and allow the use of multiple wires of different sizes and types within the same lever connector. They can be used with solid or rigid stranded cables of between 0.2mm2 and 4.0mm2, and are suitable for use with any flexible cable from 0.14mm2 to

10 MAY 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

4.00mm2. For solid and stranded cables, once the wire has been stripped, it can simply be pushed in with no need to lift the lever. For flexible wires, meanwhile, the lever is lifted before inserting the conductor and clamping it into place. Gen II Connectors have been designed to open in the opposite direction to the insertion port, locking the cables into position to prevent any accidental loosening or pull out, ensuring a safe and secure connection throughout the lifecycle of the installation. The clear housing enables easy inspection and there is a check port for testing, enabling full safety and consistency verification at the point of installation.

010_PHPI_MAY22_Layout 1 08/04/2022 16:57 Page 11

Supporting compliance Switching to connectors ensures that installations are consistently safe and compliant with current wiring regulations. The 18th Edition requires that traditional terminal strip connections should be accessible for annual inspections in compliance with BS EN 60670-22, which makes it difficult to select a suitable location for terminal strip connections and can result in non-compliance for many projects. Conversely, lever and push in connectors are classified as maintenance free when used in conjunction with an approved enclosure box, so they can be part of a compliant installation anywhere within the property.

and development resources, IDEAL Industries is always on the look out for better, faster and easier ways of carrying out electrical installations, which includes providing solutions for the electrical connections required for heating and plumbing projects. Electrical terminations may only make up 10-15% of the average project for a heating engineer but they can slow the installation down. By learning how to use wire termination connectors instead of terminal strips, heating engineers and plumbers can ensure the installation is compliant and reduce the potential for errors and costly call backs.

SPECIAL REPORT | Low carbon heating

DOES hydrogen HOLD THE KEY? Neil Mattock, Marketing Director and Head of Training at Vokèra by Riello, explores the potential role of hydrogen in decarbonising domestic heating systems.

I

t’s not surprising there’s been plenty of industry discussion about the use of hydrogen as a way of greening up the gas grid. The only by-product of burning hydrogen is water, so blending this gas into the existing grid would certainly help to cut emissions from our homes. We know that domestic hot water and central heating accounts for a high proportion of UK greenhouse gas emissions, and with the clock ticking towards the Government’s net zero carbon target in 2050, it’s clear that we need to make the transition to cleaner energy sooner rather than later.

However, whilst we can design and construct new homes with more climate-friendly heating, there are millions of existing properties using fossil-fuel systems that will need to be replaced with low carbon technologies. A high proportion of these currently have natural gas boilers that will all need converting to low carbon systems which, in many cases, could involve major changes to pipework, controls and heat emitter. That’s clearly a huge challenge.

Alternative energy sources We know that within the next 30 years we need to find alternative energy sources that will help us decarbonise heating in a way that is effective, affordable, fair and minimises disruption for millions of consumers. Given the fact that we have an existing natural gas resource infrastructure the option of simply replacing natural gas by a gas that does not emit greenhouse gases is being considered – and this is where hydrogen, also known as H2, comes in. Converting gas distribution networks from natural gas to hydrogen has the advantage of offering consumers a heating option which works for them in a very similar way to natural gas today, but with no carbon emissions. According to the publication ‘Hydrogen for heating’ issued in August 2021 by the Department for

20%

The UK’s first live pilot to inject up to 20% (by volume) of zero carbon hydrogen has been demonstrated at the University of Keele’s existing natural gas network, feeding 100 homes and 30 faculty buildings.

SPECIAL REPORT | Low carbon heating

A clear commitment from Government in support of a grid conversion to hydrogen would certainly help to ensure continued development of this technology. Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, hydrogen is seen as one potential key option for decarbonising heating, alongside other solutions, including heat pumps and heat networks. To assess the feasibility, costs and benefits of repurposing the existing gas grid for 100% hydrogen the Government is planning to support a pioneering large village hydrogen heating trial that will build on the ‘neighbourhood trial’ due to take place in Levenmouth, Fife in 2023.

concerns about production costs and its viability as an alternative energy source on a large scale. Hydrogen can be obtained from various industrial processes but one of the ‘cleanest’ methods is through electrolysis of water. Furthermore, if this done using electricity from renewable energy sources it creates no emissions, which is why it is often called ‘green hydrogen’.

Small steps

Product labelling

While the Government is looking at the feasibility of 100% hydrogen networks, the UK’s first live pilot to inject up to 20% (by volume) of zero carbon hydrogen has been demonstrated at the University of Keele’s existing natural gas network, feeding 100 homes and 30 faculty buildings. It is estimated that if a 20% hydrogen blend was rolled out across the country it could save around six million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year, the equivalent of taking 2.5 million cars off the road. This shows that there could still be significant benefits in taking even this first small step towards H2 migration. With this option in mind, Vokèra has recently launched the Unica MAX which has been specially designed to provide forward-thinking homeowners with an efficient domestic heating solution that has been certified to burn up to a 20% blend of hydrogen as and when their local network switches to greener gases. Of course, when considering hydrogen as a replacement for fossil-fuels it is important to understand that hydrogen is not a resource that we can dig up from the ground but has to be made using another energy supply. This has raised some

As with any new technology it is important for products to be labelled correctly so consumers know exactly what they are buying. For example, the phrase ‘hydrogen ready’ could be misleading because these appliances won’t run on 100% hydrogen straight out of the box, as the name might imply. In order to burn 100% hydrogen some modifications will need to be made by a heating professional. Currently the heating industry is developing clear product definitions to avoid any such confusion. I suppose you could equate this to the launch of the first high definition (HD) televisions. Many consumers thought that any TV marked with the HD Ready logo could play high-definition TV, but that wasn’t the case. Typically, HD television measures 1920 by 1080 pixels in resolution, while HD Ready sets only offer 1280 by 720 pixels by comparison.

Fuel of the future? Hydrogen may have the potential to become the heating fuel of the future but, as discussed, there are challenges that still

14 MAY 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

need to be overcome. A clear commitment from Government in support of a grid conversion to hydrogen would certainly help to ensure continued development of this technology. The results of pioneering trials of 100% hydrogen gas networks will be interesting to see and, if successful, could secure this commitment. However, a single solution is unlikely to meet the green energy needs of millions of different households, which is why at Vokèra by Riello, alongside hydrogen, we will continue to develop a broad range of emission-free heating technologies in the journey towards the ultimate goal of net zero heating by 2050. NEW HOMES NEW OPPORTUNITIES

F

or installers working in the new build sector, a huge adjustment comes into force in June this year – but it’s one that reputable manufacturers can offer help with. The amendments to Part L of the building regulations will come into force in June as part of the drive to achieve Net Zero by 2050. The ultimate goal is to ensure that the average new build home produces 31% lower CO2 emissions compared to one built to current requirements. To meet the standards, new properties will need heating systems that have a flow temperature of 55°C or less – which is not easy to achieve with nearly half of current UK housing stock.

Stuart Wood, Product Manager – Sustainable Heating, for Polypipe Building Products, explains wh y underf loor heating co uld be on the rise, especia lly for new-build homes.

So, what do installers need to be aware of when these changes come – and what systems will you need to be familiar with as the rules come into force in new-build properties?

Go with the flow A BEIS Government report on the suitability of existing heat distribution systems for low temperature heating found that just one in 10 UK dwellings could meet the heat demand with a 55°C flow temperature on a peak heating day. The same survey found that only one in 100 would meet the demand at 45°C. The report went on to say that, on an average winter day, 53% of dwellings could

use a 55°C flow temperature, and 6% could use a 45°C flow temperature, with no changes to their heat emitters or flow rates. The ambitious carbon reduction targets – coupled with the existing heating systems of the UK’s housing stock indicates that many new builds will now be using heat pumps – rather than gas boilers. These will need to be paired with underfloor heating and, potentially, with heat networks. In fact, the government has said that it expects heat pumps will become the primary heating technology for new homes – so it’s important for installers to be up to speed on products and skills required.

Underfloor opportunity For this heat pump technology to work at its most efficient level, the system needs to run at 35°C – 45°C and this is something that underfloor heating and heat networks can perfectly support. Underfloor heating is the most popular home heating system to pair with a heat pump as it provides an even, comfortable heat using lower temperature water than

the government has said that it expects heat pumps will become the primary heating technology for new homes – so it’s important for installers to be up to speed on products and skills required. an equivalent radiator system. In certain circumstances a radiator system can be overly taxing for a heat pump, but they are ideal for use with underfloor heating.

System design There are several things which a professional would consider when designing an underfloor heating project, such as the amount of insulation and glazing in the property. A Design Engineer will also ask about the heat source and what kind of floor the system will be installed in (is it a new solid floor, between joists or over an existing floor) and if there is a finished floor covering in mind. At Polypipe we have functionality and longevity in mind so we can help you choose a system which best suits your needs. If any installers are unfamiliar with heat networks, they can speak to their pipe and heating manufacturers – like Polypipe Building Products – who will be able to offer them help and advice on which products to select.

Heat Networks Installers will know Polypipe as a specialist in plastic plumbing and underfloor heating, but they may not know that the company also offers products suitable for heat networks. Polypipe’s single, double and quadruple insulated pipes come in a wide range of sizes that are in stock and that are made specifically for this purpose. The single medium heating pipe is primarily intended for the transport of heating water in buried distribution networks. Whereas the double pipes combine both the flow and the return medium pipes in the same jacket pipe, primarily intended for the transport of heating water in buried distribution networks. We also have both single and double sanitary pipes used for transportation of hot and cold water. Additionally, both heating and sanitary pipes are available in a combined jacket pipe known as a quadruple pipe. All are hyper flexible and made from cross-linked polyethylene PE-Xa and heating pipes are colour coded to enable easy identification of flow and return during installation, even with mounted dust or shrink end caps. The multilayer thermal insulation is made from cross-linked, microcellular polyethylene PE-X foam with a water-repellent closed cell structure, characterized by its durable, non-ageing insulation performance, and its permanent elasticity, maximizing and maintaining the thickness of the insulation layer, even after

bending multiple times. The high-grade, black coloured UV-resistant, double walled, corrugated HDPE jacket pipe shields the pre-insulated piping system against mechanical impacts and moisture, whilst maintaining maximum flexibility. Polypipe also offers a full range of fittings and accessories. The key to success is considering the full picture of a new build heating system – the heat source and the underfloor heating – at both the design and installation stage. HEAT PUMPS Lizzie Wilkinson, Head of Domestic Product Management at Ideal Heating, discusses the benefits of heat pumps and the role they will play in helping homeowners go green.

H

eat pumps are a highly efficient, low carbon way of providing heating and hot water to homes. While they are not yet commonplace in the UK, their use is increasing quickly, particularly as the UK government targets net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. With gas and oil boilers being banned in new build homes by 2025, many are touting heat pumps as potential replacements for traditional boilers. Whether you’re helping homeowners make the switch to a heat pump or keen to learn more about the technology, there’s never been a better time to get clued up so you can help homeowners make the right choice for them.

What are heat pumps? Unlike gas boilers, heat pumps don’t burn fuel. Instead, they harness heat from the air, water or ground outside the home. This free heat is absorbed by a liquid refrigerant causing it to boil and vaporise. This gaseous refrigerant is then compressed to a high pressure, which raises the temperature of the gas significantly. The gas refrigerant then enters a heat exchanger, where it deposits its heat to the home's central heating or hot water cylinder via a pumped water circuit. As the heat is lost from the gaseous refrigerant, it naturally condenses back to liquid form. While heat pumps do use electricity, they provide far more heat per unit of electricity than traditional appliances such as boilers, as they use heat from natural

sources like the air. Heat pumps require a more sophisticated system than gas boilers but to keep it simpler for end-users, thermostats and apps can still be used to control heat levels.

£5,000

Under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, up to £5,000 funding is available for air source heat pumps and biomass boilers

Placement flexibility We recently unveiled our own domestic heat pump range, The Alfea for new build and social housing. It provides optimum comfort, reliability and efficiency, combining a quiet, compact heat pump, with an industry leading hot water cylinder. With Alfea the outside unit can be located up to 30metres from the building, offering lots of flexibility and choice over its placement. Once a heat pump has been installed, it requires little maintenance. They generally last around 25 to 30 years, approximately 10 to 15 years longer than a gas boiler. For efficient use and to ensure longevity it is recommended that heat pumps undergo an annual service.

018_PHPI_MAY22_Layout 1 08/04/2022 17:18 Page 19

Installation and lifespan Heat pumps are becoming a more popular choice among new builds as gas boilers get phased out and homes are built to higher sustainability specifications which helps optimise performance. They’re less common amongst retrofits due to the initial upfront investment required to adapt an existing heating and hot water system to accommodate a heat pump. The UK government launched the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) this April so eligible domestic homeowners can receive funding to offset the cost of installing certain low carbon heating systems, including heat pumps. Up to £5,000 is available for air source heat pumps and biomass boilers, while up to £6,000 is available for ground source heat pumps. This technology isn’t always as simple to install and repair as a boiler; mainly because fewer engineers specialise in heat pump systems currently. But this is changing as more engineers are trained and heat pumps become more widely available. To support the progression in this space we launched our own heat pump

There will not be a single ‘silver bullet’ that will enable the UK to hit its net zero target and decarbonise the nation’s property stock, but heat pumps will play a huge roll in how we heat homes in the coming years. training course to help installers upskill. The Alfea installation and set-up has been designed to be fast and simple, with Ideal’s specialist engineer teams on hand to support the entire process. This complete UK-wide wrap-around service includes expert training and technical advice for installers on design and specification, as well as service and maintenance.

Going green The biggest advantage of installing a heat pump is that they are more energy efficient than traditional central heating systems. This means they will have a positive impact on both a home’s carbon footprint and energy bills. Heat pumps are more efficient than other heating systems because the amount of heat they produce is more than

the amount of electricity they use. In other words, they work at a whopping 300 to 400 per cent efficiency rate, making them roughly three to four times more efficient than gas boilers. There will not be a single ‘silver bullet’ that will enable the UK to hit its net zero target and decarbonise the nation’s property stock, but heat pumps will play a huge roll in how we heat homes in the coming years. At Ideal Heating we are committed to helping facilitate the UK’s journey to a greener future and supporting installers so that they can build their knowledge and expertise on new, renewable heating and hot water systems. THE RISE OF THE

Towel Rail

Chris Harvey, Head of Marketing at Stelrad Radiator Group, explores the decorative and designer radiator options for bathrooms and kitchens.

T

he market for decorative and designer radiators has burgeoned in the past decade and the annual market for them is now well over a million units per year, reflected in the wider number of companies manufacturing and distributing these important heating appliances. Traditionally targeted at the bathroom, they are now commonplace in bathrooms, en-suites and kitchens of course. But what about the options available these days. Have they changed in the last few years? Indeed they have. The earliest special radiators for bathrooms were the traditional chrome towel rails, many of which were the source of huge disappointment as they certainly warmed the towels but didn’t have the oomph to heat the room. As with all radiators, the secret such as it is, is that the radiator needs to be sized correctly to heat the room adequately.

The breadth of choice available in this exciting niche market has grown hugely and whilst there are still chrome ladder rails available – we at Stelrad offer a selection – they are far better quality and better at sharing warmth around the room than their elderly predecessors. Plus, the selection of designs, finishes and even colours these days is something to behold. There are a larger number of manufacturers around supplying towel rails and some of the major radiator manufacturers that have tended to target the selling of traditional steel panel radiators have not taken the towel rail marketplace as seriously as they might. Certainly, as far as Stelrad here in the UK is concerned, it’s a niche market it is taking very seriously and the range of radiators for the bathroom, kitchen and wider living

spaces now available has seen the advent of a wider range of specialist decorative and designer radiators and towel warmers than the company has ever offered before.

Design options More designs – both traditional and contemporary – more choice of materials with the arrival of a range of stainless-steel designs, and a wider range of finishes with polished and brushed stainless steel and a selection of coloured radiators with many coloured radiators in stock and available within 72 hours of order, adding to the choice available to householders, interior designers and installers. It’s a far more sophisticated market than even a couple of years ago, with well-priced, multiple sized offerings to match almost any décor and any size room with ease.

Colour conscious? Most of Stelrad’s radiators can be ordered in up to thirty-six colours if you can wait a while for delivery – but there’s a wide range of options now available in anthracite grey from stock, which can blend well with other décors and add that additional style to many bathrooms and kitchens. Interestingly, the monochrome bathroom and kitchen are very much back in style and can look elegant and contemporary. The addition of an attractive metallic radiator to traditional black and white can really add that luxurious look. The options available for the kitchen and wider living spaces around the home allow for radiators where the colour compliments or contrasts with other décor and fit in with the trend for vertical radiators around the home, slotting in well in nooks and crannies and on smaller walls where a horizontal radiator would not provide the levels of heat usually needed from a radiator. A bright blue or red Caliente tubular radiator can be something of a focal point in a kitchen or kitchen diner whilst the stunning Swing provides a talking point wherever it’s installed. The Concord towel rail is growing in popularity with a range of sizes available too. The selection available quite simply changes the look of a bathroom or kitchen, proving that a radiator can be a centre point of the décor rather than simply a heating appliance.

The latest options The selection of new options available from Stelrad is vast but just to pick out three that will set the pulses racing – take a closer look at the Como – a flat brushed stainless-steel rectangular tube design for both modern and contemporary homes. The Column Vertical Concept – stunning in anthracite grey – again a combination of traditional design and modern colouring. And the new Traditional Column – a classic look especially in a bathroom – in traffic white with a chrome frame – offering just a little more style and lot more pizazz for the home… it’s a selection that demands careful consideration. GOOD FOR THE

Sole Underfloor heating is an ideal partner for heat pump installations. Anna Wakefield, Head of Marketing at Grant UK, explains how it has been used in a home renovation.

U

nderfloor heating is a popular choice of heat emitter for heat pump systems, such as the Grant Aerona³ heat pump. It is especially effective in new build projects where this type of heat emitter can be smoothly integrated into the initial designs, during a project’s in-depth planning stages. In this renovation project, two types of underfloor heating system were fitted. Within a new extension, Grant Uflex was utilised which was embedded within the floor construction. Uflex underfloor heating systems effectively maintain room temperatures while also helping a heat pump to work efficiently. Grant Uflex is suited for new builds and extensions because the pipe can be laid and screed poured during the early phases, allowing other works to be completed while the screed fully dries. PEX-AL-PEX Pipe is also available for use with Uflex installations. The pipe is 16mm in diameter, is easy to work with, and has the additional benefit of being suitable for potable hot and cold water

systems allowing the pipe to be used for underfloor heating and elsewhere in a property’s infrastructure. Throughout the remainder of the downstairs, where there was existing flooring, Grant’s low-profile underflooring heating system, Uflex MINI, was installed. At just 15mm in height, this system consists of self-adhesive mini panels which are simply placed on top of the sealed floor and the pipework is then clipped into place. The Uflex MINI uses a self-levelling screed which dries in just three days allowing heat to be restored to the property within a short amount of time. Controls for Grant’s underfloor heating systems include the Uflex Neostat V2 and Uflex Edge programmable room thermostats which are user-friendly with a clear display, easy navigation and a clean, stylish look.

Water leaks can be disruptive and costly. Martin Nicholson, Divisional Director of Specification at RWC, explains how the latest smart technology can help to prevent the damage caused by leaks.

A

T

he cost of insurance claims related to leaks are in the hundreds of millions of pounds, while the true cost implications are much higher. For property owners, architects, contractors and specifiers, the resulting long delays to development projects, substantial damage to ceilings, walls, floors and equipment, and possible subsidence damage to foundations, are just some of the issues to factor in. However, there is a high-tech way to begin to turn back this rising tide of claims, costs and inconvenience, by using smart leak detection technology, as RWC has recently launched its new Reliance Valves MultiSafe Leak Detection System, which includes the MultiSafe Control Valve and the Floor Leak Sensor.

Real-time prevention The MultiSafe Control Valve system offers real-time prevention and 24/7 peace of mind. It is designed to constantly monitor

WAY TO STOP LEAKS water usage to safeguard plumbing systems and identify potential failures that could lead to costly leaks. The system is suitable for domestic homes, apartment complexes, commercial and public buildings, high-rise flats and tall buildings, as well as large-scale developments. It works by identifying leaks at a very early stage in order to prevent water damage. An alert is sent when a leak is detected, and it automatically shuts off the water supply. It also monitors water usage and patterns, identifying potential areas for

conservation, and can be connected with multiple devices on the same wi-fi network to centrally control several devices in large buildings or apartments.

Peace of mind From dripping taps, to burst pipes and leaky plumbing connections behind the wall or in building voids, there are many ways water can escape within buildings. And the cost of water damage quickly adds up, especially when defects go undetected and are often only noticed when it is too late. This new leak detection system offers specifiers, contractors and homeowners peace of mind with real-time leak detection and, critically, the ability to stop leaks in their tracks. With both leak detection and water monitoring, MultiSafe also helps architects and developers to earn BREEAM points, making it an attractive investment for those that need to consider environment-friendly solutions.

An alert is sent when a leak is detected, and it automatically shuts off the water supply.

The system earns two BREEAM credits for reducing the impact of water leaks that may otherwise go undetected (leak detection), and one credit for ensuring water consumption is monitored and managed to encourage reduction (water monitoring).

The system can be controlled using RWC’s free app, where instant alerts can be set up, real-time insights – such as water usage – can be viewed, and settings can be adjusted using home and away modes.

Ease of installation

Domestic advantages

The WRAS-approved system has been designed with ease of installation in mind, featuring MBSP union connections. It should be installed on the main cold water line, before branches to appliances and after any other control valves. The installer will cut the pipework and mount the MultiSafe Control Valve using union connections and then insert the battery pack and plug the mains adaptor into a 230v electrical supply (within two metres). Finally, they will connect it to the wi-fi and download the free app. We recommend that it is used in combination with our Multisafe Floor Leak Sensor for ultimate leak detection in high-risk areas. The sensor can monitor the floor for wet areas, alerting when water is detected. It can also measure room temperature and notify when it drops enough to cause pipes to freeze and burst, while also monitoring humidity levels to prevent mould formation.

In domestic settings the unit gives people that may be on holiday some peace of mind, knowing that if a leak occurs while they are away it will be shut down before any serious damage can occur. In large residential developments, one leak detection system per property is all that is required. Every product has a QR code, so when the code is scanned it loads it on to the customer’s database. For example, in a block of 500 apartments, 500 separate QR codes would be loaded into the database, allowing each unit to be monitored and controlled. The concierge, or service manager, would have access to a dashboard monitoring all the units. They would get instant alerts if a leak was detected and the individual apartment’s supply would be shut down, potentially avoiding major water damage to dozens of homes.

Martyn Brown, Contracts & Technical Manager at Triton Showers, looks at the latest shower technologies that installers can recommend or fit – including some smart innovations that bring showering into the digital age.

SHOWERING SOLUTIONS AND TRENDS

W

hether it’s first thing in the morning preparing for the day ahead or relaxing just before bed, showering forms an important part of many peoples’ day. According to Triton’s latest ‘Greener UK Showers’ report, in a survey of 2,000 people, over half of those asked said they spend 10-15 minutes in the shower, while on average, British citizens have five showers a week. With showers playing such an integral role in our lives, here is an overview of some of the latest shower solutions to consider when replacing or selecting for a new bathroom installation.

Rainfall options One of the most popular additions to the bathroom is the overhead shower, with the fixed spray head positioned above providing the user with a ‘rainfall’ shower experience. Triton’s new Push Button Bar Diverter Thermostatic Mixer Shower is designed to offer enhanced functionality combined with a contemporary finish. The diverter feature allows users to easily switch between a single spray pattern handset and overhead fixed

(rainfall) shower at the push of a button. In addition to a more traditional chrome finish, the Push Button Bar Diverter is available in an on-trend matt black with a matching safety glass shelf ideal for contemporary design schemes.

Smarter showers Digital showers are another fast-growing segment within the UK bathroom market. Triton’s survey found that approximately 86% of all respondents would seriously think about purchasing a digital shower in the future. This was strongest amongst people aged between 35-44. Digital mixer showers allow users to create pre-sets and tailor their shower experience. Triton’s HOST is a good example of this type of model and offers increased installation flexibility so installers can tackle varying bathroom layouts. The sleek control panel with full text and colour TFT digital display can be positioned anywhere on the wall as it is wireless, or, if preferred, it can be hardwired through a cable supplied with the unit, allowing it to be positioned within ten metres of the mixer box.

Look for the Quiet Mark

Eco solutions

Homes that suffer from low water pressure require shower solutions that are pump assisted to boost the water flow. However traditionally pump assisted showers can be noisy due to the motor emitting a high noise output. In such circumstances, selecting shower units that have quiet brushless motors and third-party accreditation for reduced noise is a good idea. For example, Triton has a range of Quiet Mark approved shower solutions, that include the AS2000SR power shower, T90SR pumped electric and for care applications the Omnicare Pumped SR.

Alongside aesthetics and functionality, showers need to be more eco-friendly. Homeowners and consumers are more sustainably aware than ever, yet 64% of those surveyed in Triton’s report To view Triton’s said they were unsure of how to latest ‘Greener UK monitor their water usage. Plus, Showers’ report with the recent rises in the cost of please living, installers may well be tasked www.rdr.link /p with choosing models that can save af011 water and energy, as well as money. To help installers and homeowners better understand the amount of water and energy they are using, Triton has created an online Energy and Water Savings Calculator. The calculator asks simple questions about household occupants and typical showering habits, before providing personalised tips and suggestions for improvement.

Multi-generational living Another trend that has emerged over the past few years is multi-generational living, with 1.8 million households in the UK with several generations living under one roof. This shift in demographics also coincides with the rise in demand for social housing and an aging population. For such households, it’s important that installers consider safety when choosing showers, catering for older individuals who may have mobility and visual impairment needs. Triton’s Omnicare range of inclusive showers meets this need, by incorporating a raft of functionality that specifically assists users who require additional support. It’s also important to factor in installation, and the Omnicare Design and Omnicare Ultra are both suitable for retrofit applications, so that they can easily replace outdated models or be installed as an adaptation in situations where a user’s needs may have changed.

With showers and baths being the most water-heavy appliances in the household, it stands to reason that any solution that can help reduce water waste should be considered. However, there is a perception that eco solutions are higher in cost compared to non-eco-friendly products. 55% of people surveyed from Triton’s report saying they would expect to pay more, when in reality eco showers are rarely more expensive. Here, installers can help educate customers, and for those serious about energy and water conservation, electric showers are a sustainable option. Naturally, these showers will lower energy usage as they only heat the water that is used, but there are also water saving electric showers such as the T80 Pro-Fit Eco, which go further by restricting the flow of water contributing to the reduction of household water consumption.

F low Q

Have you ever needed to improve the performance of a single outlet in a house? One solution that can help is the recently launched TapBoost from Salamander Pumps. PHPI caught up with Gareth Richards, Technical Director at Salamander Pumps to find out more.

Why has Salamander Pumps introduced this new solution?

We’ve launched TapBoost as we spotted a real gap in the market for a solution that will improve the performance of just a single outlet in a home. Households in the UK can have a variety of different plumbing systems, many of which have been changed, extended or replaced. This can produce a variation of water pressure and flow across the system and crucially, at different outlets in the home. This means that the water performance may be fine generally across the property, but with one outlet that is simply not preforming as it should. And while there are plenty of solutions for boosting bathrooms or the whole house, if there is just a single tap in the home that needs boosting, opting for one of these bigger solutions seems like overkill and an excessive cost for the homeowner. This is where TapBoost fills the gap in the market – offering a cost effective solution for when there is just one problem point.

the level of existing flow. For example, if an outlet has an existing flow of 2 l/min, TapBoost will add approximately 5 l/min, giving a total of 7 l/min out of the tap.

Q

What is the size of the unit and whereabouts can it be sited?

Q

How does TapBoost help to improve water flow for a single outlet?

TapBoost is compact and can be fitted at multiple locations around the house, including bathroom and kitchen sinks, bath taps, garden taps, toilet cisterns, dishwashers, washing machines and showers.

TapBoost is an inline pump, which attaches directly to the incoming water flow of an outlet to improve the water performance.

Q

Q

What level of performance can it deliver?

It is designed to boost the water flow to 7 – 12 litres per minute (l/min), depending on

As TapBoost is designed to be sited close to an outlet, what level of noise does it make? Our Research and Development team have designed TapBoost to ensure it is quiet in operation. The pump operates at a level of 34.2 dBA, which is much quieter than most pumps.

Q

Can TapBoost be used on both a gravity-fed system and a mains-fed system?

Yes – TapBoost can be fitted in either a mains-fed or a gravity-fed system, as it is installed at the point of the outlet, rather than fitting to a combi-boiler for example. However, there must be a natural flow of at least 1.2l/min to activate TapBoost. It’s also worth noting that in unvented systems, TapBoost should only be fitted onto cold water outlets.

the outlet and 15mm compression fittings on the inlet, compatible fittings will be required for the installation.

Q

Although in theory multiple TapBoost pumps could be installed at different locations in a house to improve the performance of multiple outlets, if poor water pressure and flow is a problem throughout a property, it would be more cost effective to install a whole-house solution. Depending on the home’s plumbing system, this could either take the form of a whole house pump, or larger inline pumps and accumulator tanks. If a home has a gravity-fed system, you

Are there any particular things to be aware of when installing TapBoost?

The best place to install TapBoost is directly before the outlet to be boosted. TapBoost should always be installed indoors and can be installed horizontally or vertically, but never upside down. It is supplied with ½” BSP male connections on

Q

Will it solve water flow issues throughout a house, or would you advise a different solution for whole-house issues?

should opt for a whole house pump such as our EVE pump – this is a universal pump (meaning it is suitable for both positive and negative head installations) with a variable bar rating, making it suitable for any gravity-fed system. Alternatively, homes with a mains-fed system should opt for either our CombiBoost or HomeBoost pumps for a whole-house solution, as these can provide up to 10l/min and 12l/min respectively. Or for larger properties with greater water demand, one of our AccuBoost tanks would be more suitable – these can provide up to 36l/min per tank. The tanks can also be linked together to provide even greater flow levels, if required. For more information please www.rdr.link/paf013

COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

For the modern professional, choosing the best van roof rack from the wide selection available can be daunting. So, what are the key characteristics to look out for? Rhino Products explores the important features.

A RACKING IDEA R oof racks on commercial vans must be robust and durable. At the same time, a large carrying capacity is essential for any working environment. Being exposed to the rigours of the road and the outdoors, means that this equipment also needs to be corrosion resistant.

Roof racks must also be highly functional. Rhino ensures the usability of its roof racks thanks to a full width durable steel roller attached to composite stub axles, which allows for easy loading and unloading at the rear.

Aesthetics and aerodynamics Strength and functionality To ensure maximum service life for roof racks, thorough durability testing needs to be carried out. This begins early in the design process, in-house engineers should utilise advanced analytical software to identify and eliminate any potential weaknesses. Physical prototypes are then created and tested to destruction to ensure maximum strength in all areas. Continual improvement also needs to be carried out on existing designs too. This approach delivers highly robust roof racks with high load carrying capacities. In some cases, this is even taken a step further. For example, Rhino’s AluminiumRack is independently crash tested to 20G at Millbrook Proving Ground in the UK – twice the industry standard city crash test of 10G. Its anodised aluminium alloy construction ensures durability and a resistance to corrosion, delivering a long service life.

Modern vans are starting to look more like passenger cars. Sleek lines and sharp details are becoming standard across all manufacturers, so modern roof racks need to match this design philosophy. The AluminiumRack is designed to be sleek and smooth, integrating with the aesthetics of modern vans. Features such as polymer composite nose cones improve aerodynamics and reduce wind noise while driving. By selecting a roof rack with an aesthetic that closely matches the van, users improve the looks of a vehicle while also maximising aerodynamic efficiency.

Optimum fit Making sure a roof rack is optimised for the van model, wheelbase and height is imperative. A poorly fitted roof rack will not only look odd but offer reduced usability and safety. Choosing an optimised design will also help ease fitting.

36 MAY 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

Rhino has designed the AluminiumRack to fit a wide selection of the most popular commercial vans, covering major brands such as Renault, Peugeot, Citroen, Volkswagen and Ford. A compatibility tool and comparison tables on the Rhino Products website allows customers to check that their van is supported and select the optimum rack. Bespoke installation kits tailored to each model and wheelbase deliver a perfect fit. Each kit includes instructions, all necessary parts and two Allen keys – with two ladders and two 10mm/13mm spanners (depending on the rack) required to complete installation.

Designed for efficiency Improving fuel efficiency is a goal of all van fleets. Additionally, to help minimise environmental impact, many fleets are going electric. Whether fully electric, hybrid or combustion only – choosing a roof rack which has reduced weight and good aerodynamic properties helps to maximise range and fuel efficiency. BOSCH COMMERCIAL & INDUSTRIAL LAUNCHES CONDENS 7000 WP

A

new commercial boiler series, the Condens 7000 WP has been introduced by Bosch Commercial & Industrial. The new series replaces the Worcester Bosch GB162 V2, with a new design developed to increase install time with simplicity in mind. The company states that installers can expect to save up to 60% on average installation times when fitting the Condens 7000 WP compared to the GB162 V2. Time savings are achieved thanks to a new frame kit design, simple install steps with minimal tools required and an easily accessible PCB.

Outputs of 50kW, 65kW, 85kW and 100kW are immediately available. Higher outputs of 125kW and 145kW launching soon. The range is available as either a single boiler or a cascade pack, which suits a wide variety of system outputs and hydraulic requirements.

Small spaces The series is suitable for larger domestic properties as well as commercial, hybrid and communal solutions. It is also suitable for small spaces or those with low ceilings, with outputs up 570kW achievable in a space as small as 1m².

Simon Tarr, National Projects Director at Bosch Commercial & Industrial, commented; “Our new range has been developed with installer’s time in mind. “We have taken the complexity away from each step of the product journey. When specifying, each pack contains all the base components required, sitting under one part number. “Whether you are specifying with Bosch in mind, or if you are looking for multiple quotes from different manufactures to work out the best value for the job, we have made this process simple. Packs are available as either as a single pack, or cascades of multiple boilers with various hydraulic options. “When it comes to installing, and while obtaining customer feedback during our research and development phase, we saw an installer on average assembling a two-boiler cascade in less than 20 mins on their first attempt! The installation is very intuitive and shows a real evolution to cascade frames. “Finally, we’ve created an online pre-commissioning checklist where installers can now book commissioning directly through us, ultimately streamlining the process. “We hope that all these time-saving measures add up to give installers and contractors more time to focus on either additional jobs, wider business admin or just free time to enjoy.” For more information please www.rdr.link/paf015

PRODUCTS IN PRACTICE

BAXI TO DEMONSTRATE LOW CARBON HEATING IN NEW HOMES

A

WELSH HOUSEBUILDER OPTS FOR OMNIE

O

MNIE has supplied a complete underfloor heating package to a housebuilder constructing two dozen homes near the Welsh coast. The three and four bedroom homes at Pludds Meadow, located in the town of Laugharne, have been built by Salem Construction, part of Sancler Property. OMNIE provided full drawings and specifications for each plot, indicating the layout of their Staple and TorFloor UFH arrays across the ground and first floor to each dwelling. Carl Thornton, Design Manager for Salem Construction, commented: “We build 15-20 houses a year and although we have used underfloor heating systems a number of times in the past, this is the first time we’ve worked with OMNIE. I decided to go for the complete package they offer, rather than sourcing the pipework, manifolds, controls etc separately. This simplifies things for us while OMNIE also supplied all the drawings for our installer to work from and then its engineers come back to commission each system.”

All-in-one solution Dale Jones of MJ Plumbing & Heating added: “The TorFloor in particular, combining a floor and heating system in one structural panel, is a fantastic system and really quite straightforward to install. The carpenters have fixed the panels across both engineered and conventional timber joists for ourselves to lay the pipes and connect back to the manifolds which range from six to 12 port.” The TorFloor panels combine the ability to span upper storey joists or battens fitted across a ground level slab, to provide high efficiency underfloor heating and a structural deck in one product. ir source heat pumps from Baxi are to be used in a new project to implement low carbon heating in new houses. From 2025, the proposed Future Homes Standard will ban gas boilers in new build homes and require more stringent building energy efficiency requirements – with the aim of reducing carbon emissions by 80%. Two Baxi Assure air source heat pump systems will be installed at 'Project 80' in Handsworth, Birmingham, which aims to meet the Future Homes Standard three years ahead of schedule. The project is led by housing association Midland Heart. The houses will be lived in by families and will be a ‘living lab’ to test how they manage in their homes. The evidence gathered will help to inform how developers and their suppliers adapt to the standard ahead of an expected technical consultation in 2023. Baxi Air Source Heat Pump Development Manager Ryan Kirkwood said: “Our involvement in Project 80 will demonstrate how our air source heat pumps can make an important contribution to lowering greenhouse gas emissions in new homes. “We will also gain insights from monitoring how people adapt to living in these homes that will help us to solve the complex energy transition.” For more information please
