Train ride It is not something you’d want to do every week (and some might hope they’d left it behind years ago) but training is very much part of the sector. Accreditations need to be maintained, emerging technologies mastered, and perhaps most importantly of all, regulations and standards must be understood and adhered to. Training sessions can be the access point to achieving all these things. Training for plumbers and heating engineers has evolved dramatically over the last few years. With the pandemic restrictions preventing people gathering together, many of the traditional courses at regional training venues or manufacturer HQs were cancelled. What sprung up in their place were online courses, webinars and videos – all designed to give installers the updates needed. Following the relaxation of Covid restrictions, these two solutions (in-person and online) have been kneaded together by a number of organisations into a hybrid form of training. This more flexible approach has been welcomed by many in the sector, with installers able to pick-and-choose the delivery methods which best suit them and, importantly, at times which fit into hectic schedules. And, if recent research by CIPHE is anything to go by, it would appear that being fully qualified and able to evidence professionalism is something which homeowners are seeking. According to a recent CIPHE survey nearly two thirds (62%) of homeowners would choose to pay more for a plumbing and heating engineer who could evidence their professionalism, versus a cheaper quote from an engineer who could not. And customers would also appear to be increasingly engaged with the process of selecting a person to work in their home. In the same survey homeowners revealed that on average they spend 65 minutes researching who to employ. You can read more on page 7. Training options are expanding all the time. In this issue we’ve news of Glow-worm and Vaillant’s new training academies, along with two new training centres becoming part of Daikin’s Sustainable Home Network and Ideal Heating’s link up with a college in Derby. To discover more please turn to page 34. Plus, with increasing levels of interest in heat pumps, installers wishing to design and install these systems will need the appropriate level of training. On page 32 you can find details of a new low temperature systems training course. For technicians and engineers wishing to stay at the top of their game, training is a well-regarded route to accessing the latest skills and solutions. And, thanks to investments in both physical sites and digital delivery, there are an increasingly diverse number of options from which to choose.

INSTALLERS ENCOURAGED TO DELIVER THE BOILER UPGRADE SCHEME Installers are being reminded how they can help deliver the £450million government scheme to heat the homes and small businesses with renewable technology. Installers have been able to sign up to deliver the new Boiler Upgrade Scheme from 11th April. Since 23rd May householders and small businesses in England and Wales have been able to get access to grants of up to £6,000 towards the cost of replacing traditional fossil fuel boilers with more efficient, low carbon heating technologies. These include air and ground source heat pumps and, in some cases, biomass boilers. The scheme is being administrated by Ofgem. Philippa Pickford, Director of Delivery and Schemes at Ofgem, said: “We are delighted to be working with BEIS in administering the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) on behalf of government. Continuing to decarbonise heat is central to the delivery of Ofgem’s decarbonisation action plan.”
ARE OFF-GRID HOMES READY FOR HEAT PUMPS? Heating technicians have voiced concerns over the government’s proposals to convert off-grid homes to heat pumps with the vast majority (87%) revealing less than one-fifth (20%) of the properties they service are currently ready for the technology. Poor insulation was cited as the biggest barrier (72%) followed by the age and condition of the property (67%) and heat emitters, such as radiators, needing replacing (27%). The survey of 229 OFTEC technicians was in response to the government’s proposals to end the installation of new fossil-fuel oil boilers in homes from 2026. Malcolm Farrow, Head of Public Affairs at OFTEC, said: “The government is focused on a heat pump solution for off-grid homes but heating technicians working in these properties every day are very clear about the real world challenges with this approach. “They know it makes little sense to install heat pumps in inefficient buildings and the vast majority of their customers are simply not ready to transition without expensive and disruptive energy efficiency improvements.”

COST OF HIRING A ROGUE REVEALED A survey has revealed the price homeowners can pay in the UK by accidently hiring rogue plumbers and heating engineers instead of professionals with proof of competency. According to the survey of 1,000 homeowners, commissioned by the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), those unfortunate enough to have hired a suspected unscrupulous plumber or heating engineer, on average spent £1,883 to cover the cost of additional work and repairs to put it right. Nearly two thirds (62%) of homeowners would choose to pay more for a plumbing and heating engineer who could evidence their professionalism, versus a cheaper quote from an engineer who could not. To avoid any potential issues, homeowners shared that on average they spend 65 minutes researching who to employ. Kevin Wellman, Chief Executive Officer at the CIPHE, said: “It is heartening to see that plumbing and heating engineers are highly regarded by homeowners. But our survey shows that many are concerned about rogue traders posing as professionals and, for those who have unfortunately been deceived, the cost of rectifying potentially dangerous work can be excessive. “It must also be taken into account that many homeowners are not taking their search for a specialist lightly and the appetite for certified professionals to do work in their home is absolutely there.” For information about the CIPHE please

IS PLUMBING THE TOP DIY DISASTER IN HOMES?
INDUSTRY INSIGHT in association with
A new survey has confirmed that plumbers are the UK’s most used tradespeople when it comes to fixing problems caused by ‘have-a-go DIY-ers’. Water Regs UK compared a range of typical jobs that are carried out in UK homes and recorded how many people have tried but failed to complete the jobs themselves. Over 2,000 people across the UK were asked which home maintenance jobs they or a family member or friend had attempted, only to end up calling out a professional to fix the problem. Almost a fifth (18%) of those surveyed said that they had called in a plumbing professional to complete a job they had tried to do themselves. Plumbers were the most called upon trade, followed by electricians (15%) and plasterers (10%). Julie Spinks, Managing Director of Water Regs UK, believes just calling in a plumber isn’t always the answer to the problem. The advice from Water Regs UK is to make sure the plumber is properly qualified. She said: “Water Regs UK is working hard to educate homeowners that they really should only turn to approved plumbers, if they want to be sure that installers are committed to working to quality standards.”
While Heat Pumps are the Government’s favoured technology to reduce the carbon footprint of heating buildings, they can be less suitable for hard-to-heat properties; and this is why biofuels have a place in the future of low carbon heating, says Neil Sawers, Commercial Technical Manager at Grant UK. Water treatment manufacturer, Fernox, is calling on heating and plumbing professionals to ensure that they are implementing the best practice guidance outlined in BS 7593:2019 – before it becomes mandatory. The code of practice is due to be introduced into Part L of the Building Regulations in June 2022. Approved Document L of the Building Regulations, which looks at the conservation of fuel and power, is being updated to include additional measures that will help to keep central heating systems working at optimum efficiency. The changes include ensuring an in-line filter is installed, checking inhibitor levels on site annually and conducting laboratory analysis of the system water, or re-dosing, every five years. block to homeowners making the switch. Many hard-to-heat homes are rural and off-gas so allowing the use of low carbon Extensive trials have proven the use of Palm-oil free, Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil in existing oil boilers. 100% biofuel, HVO is an almost 100% drop-in fuel for modern pressure jet burners that can reduce carbon emissions by up to 88%, significantly lowering the carbon footprint of homes on kerosene oil. Converting an oil boiler to HVO is straightforward – the burner nozzle, combustion adjustments and cleaning the tank and oil lines are the principal changes and can be completed in two or three hours. Consequently, homes on kerosene oil could swap to HVO quickly and affordably. While current HVO costs in the UK are higher than kerosene, this could be reduced to a comparative cost if the government applied carbon offsets and allowances that other renewable fuels attract. Biofuels can be an alternative when a heat pump is not feasible, helping all homes, whatever their age and build, to transition away from high carbon fossil fuels over a reasonable timeframe. boost in new Energy Strategy In April the Government published its Energy Security Strategy, which commits the UK to an acceleration of hydrogen, with a doubling of the target from 5GW to 10GW by 2030, a new licensing round for North Sea oil and gas, and an acceleration of nuclear investment.
T
he announcement around hydrogen was welcomed by many in the sector. Oliver Lancaster, Chief Executive Officer of the Institution of Gas Engineers & Managers (IGEM), said: “With the gas system currently underpinning energy demand and delivering a significant flexibility service today, I’m really pleased that the Government is doubling the ambition for low carbon hydrogen and making clear its intention for hydrogen’s use in homes, industry and transport. “IGEM supports the adoption of a secure and diverse multi-vector system for net zero, with major roles for hydrogen, wind, nuclear, energy efficiency and demand response that are optimised for lowest total system cost and balanced across local, regional and national levels.” Carl Arntzen, CEO of Worcester Bosch commented: “The heating industry has been waiting with bated breath for the release of the Energy Strategy review and in particular what emphasis there would be on hydrogen. “So it is great to see that upon its release today the Government have doubled on their target for hydrogen production by 2030 from 5GW to 10GW. This is something that we at Worcester Bosch have been pushing for some time, given hydrogen’s viable position as an alternative fuel for domestic heating. This
increased production could result in thousands of homes being heated by either 100% hydrogen gas or within a blend with natural gas. “We see hydrogen playing an essential role on the road to net zero, working alongside other low carbon technologies such as heat pumps.” James Standley, Chief Operating Officer at Kensa Group, said: “Kensa welcomes the announcement today and the move to greater energy independence and a lower carbon, more sustainable future. The Government’s Energy Strategy contains some sensible and bold decisions on energy production, although it’s a shame that these steps are only being taken now rather than a decade or two ago. “The announcement of a £30million Heat Pump Investment Accelerator

Competition to fund the manufacture of more heat pumps here in the UK should be celebrated – we look forward to more details on this being announced. Heat pumps will transform the way we heat our homes but do need significant investment now in order to realise their full potential.”
Future for HVO However, industry associations OFTEC and UKIFDA remain concerned about the lack of support for HVO, a possible replacement fuel for oil heating. In a statement they said: “The government must urgently revisit the Energy Strategy, focusing more attention on measures to help households reduce their energy usage now, and on supporting cost-effective and practical low carbon energy solutions. For the 1.7 million UK households that currently use oil, renewable liquid fuels such as HVO should be prioritised as HVO immediately reduces carbon emissions by 88%. It can also be used in an existing oil boiler following a simple, low cost conversion that takes one hour and costs around £500.” “The industry has already demonstrated the viability of an HVO solution after sponsoring the conversion and running cost of nearly 150 oil homes to the fossil-free fuel. We urge the government so support a wider rollout.” To see the full Energy Security Strategy www.rdr.link/pag011 please

SPECIAL REPORT I Boiler Upgrade Scheme
Russell Dean, Head of Residential Heating and Ventilation at Mitsubishi Electric looks at the role of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme in making net-zero accessible.
NEED AN T
? e d a r upg
he UK is already on its way to reaching its sustainability goals – with the biggest target being to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The pledge was made three years ago, and the challenge of decarbonising heating and hot water production has since become a prominent part of reducing energy use in the country. This is because heating and hot water make a significant contribution to a building’s emissions. In fact, they create over a third (38%) of the total carbon emissions in the UK. Luckily, the technology to heat buildings in a more energy efficient, renewable way is already available – in the form of heat pumps. To encourage uptake of these types of renewable technologies, the government has tried various incentives – the most recent of which is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), first announced last year.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme will make heat pumps more accessible for UK homeowners, which will in turn help the country to move away from gas and oil and towards more renewable forms of heat. The Climate Change Committee has estimated that 19 million heat pumps will need to be installed by 2050, in order to reach the net-zero goal. This means that it is critical for heat pump uptake to be increased, and for them to become the first choice for building managers planning renovations or new builds, as they are designed for both retrofitting and installation in new property. With the new Boiler Upgrade Scheme, consumers will be able to support this goal and make more environmentally friendly decisions when it comes to heat and hot water.
Make the change Heating is often at the back of people’s minds during the summer, when in fact the
12 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
warm season is the best time to switch out a heating system – while it isn’t needed. In the coming months, installers can upgrade and even replace gas boilers to improve the energy efficiency of a home, without leaving a home and its occupants without heat. When it comes to making a heating change during the summer season, there are three key areas for homeowners to consider: Is the heating system running efficiently? Is it giving the best comfort and quality? And, does it cost more money to run than it should? If any of those areas are a concern, it may be the right time to install a new system ahead of the colder months. With Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants now available, there will be greater support available to help homeowners get prepared to make the switch this summer and protect their heating systems against rapidly rising running costs.
012_PHPI_JUN22_Layout 1 07/05/2022 12:53 Page 13
Boiler Upgrade Scheme The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) launched on the 11th April 2022 and aims to support the Government’s plan to decarbonise the UK’s buildings. This scheme will be available for three years and grants will become available from Spring 2022. Homeowners will be incentivised to choose more eco-friendly heating alternatives such as ground and air-source heat pumps, or in some cases, biomass boilers. Making the switch to low-carbon heating isn’t currently a cost-effective option for many households in the UK. However, through the scheme, the Government is aiming to make choosing low-carbon heating solutions as accessible and affordable as fossil-fuel dependent boilers. Reducing the upfront cost of purchasing a heat pump or biomass boiler with BUS grant money will open up low-carbon heating options to many who may not have been able to afford them in the past. The aim of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is to support low carbon heat technologies in up to 90,000 homes and buildings across England and Wales, as well as supporting up to 240,000 jobs in the industry across the UK by 2035. The government is also aiming to have all heating systems installed in UK homes from 2034 to be low carbon options. This grant could be a welcome cost-saving opportunity for those already considering replacing their old central heating boiler with a modern, renewable heating system. The BUS will provide a
certain amount of grant money to properties in England and Wales, which will go towards the costs of purchase and installation of these greener heating technologies.
Who qualifies? The Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies to any homes and small non-domestic properties in England and Wales with an installation capacity of up to 45kWth. Applicants who are successful will receive financial support for installing air-source heat pumps, ground-source heat pumps and, in some instances, biomass boilers where a heat pump is not a viable option. The Government is investing £450 million into the BUS, which will be managed and overseen by Ofgem, and is offering grant payments towards the cost of installation. The grant amounts offered will be: ● £5,000 for air source heat pumps and biomass boilers ● £6,000 for ground source heat pumps
The aim of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is to support low carbon heat technologies in up to 90,000 homes and buildings across England and Wales.
What comes next? Implementing more low-carbon heat technology into the UK’s housing stock will be essential for reaching net zero and reducing the UK’s reliance on fossil fuels. However, offering grants to subsidise the upfront cost of heat pumps for consumers is only part of the journey to net-zero. If the UK is to take advance of all the benefits heat pumps can provide, the Government must address ongoing supply side issues and ensure that a nationwide network of installers and engineers are also in place to meet this demand, driving the costs down even further and encouraging the uptake of thousands of new green jobs. It is hoped that this scheme will significantly increase the number of heat pumps installed in the UK, and lead to a lowering of manufacturing costs and make heat pumps cheaper to purchase in the long-term. Installation costs will also be likely to decrease as more engineers are upskilled to work with renewable heating technology. More training programs for installing heat pumps are underway, but with the BUS, more installers will be looking to learn the skills they need to fit and maintain heat pumps. For a lasting solution that will benefit the environment and the residents of the UK, heat pumps are an ideal choice – and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme will play a vital role in incentivising homeowners to make the change. THE HIGH PRESS I t is notoriously challenging for gas infrastructure companies and their contractors to maintain, refit and refurbish gas supply pipework on high-rise residential properties. Regular maintenance and periodic replacement is essential, of course, whether for ongoing inspection or to replace leaks on screwed joints. However, with external pipework running up the outside of the building and feeding into individual properties, any work requires a series of safety measures. Contractors are often forced to close exits to ensure the safety of residents and restrict access to areas at ground level below the pipework. This is before you consider the challenges of working at height for the engineers themselves, often for extended periods due to the nature of the work.
Antony Corbett, Product Applications Engineer at Geberit, explores the benefits of press-fit technology for external gas supply pipework on high rise residential properties. ‘IGEM/G/5 Edition 3 – Gas in multi-occupancy buildings’ sets the standard for gas installations both to and

With increasing demand and ever-challenging conditions, infrastructure companies and their contractors are working closely with pipework manufacturers to seek alternative, innovative methods that can reduce the time spent on each property.
a viable method in the guidelines for one of the UK’s biggest gas infrastructure companies. The system is now in full acceptance throughout their network after six years of testing, piloting and discussions. With Geberit Mapress, engineers can check and repair the gas supply pipework for an entire high rise residential building in one to two days, which reduces time, labour costs and disruption for residents. Removing hot works from the job also improves safety both for contractors and for those on the ground.
Press-fit installations
Proven credentials
One solution is to switch from welded, screwed or socketed joints to press-fit installations, which allows for quicker and easier installation and maintenance. Press-fit is quicker to install than traditional jointing methods because it requires no hot works, no soldering and no threading. It is easier to fit (even at height) because engineers simply cut to length, deburr, mark up, mount the fitting and press. A pressing jaw with jaw guide helps prevent any risk of the joint slipping or being pressed in the wrong place and ensures reliable and durable connections. A pressing indicator, which consists of a thin plastic foil encasing the pressing shoulder, gives a visible indication of a completed joint when the foil is removed during the pressing operation. Press-fit system installations have long been estimated to take approximately 30% less time to install than their traditional counterpart methods. These are the kind of benefits that have led to press-fit systems being accepted as
Press-fitting is by no means a new technology and has in fact been available to installers for five decades or more. It is suitable for everything from domestic water and gas supply pipework, to solar installations, compressed air, fuel supplies and other industrial lines – with options across copper, stainless steel, carbon steel and CuNiFe. As well as delivering a more
16 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
cost-effective, time-efficient, safer job, it also improves reliability of joints too. Coloured pressing indicators are fitted over the ends of fittings, which offer easy identification of both the material and any unpressed joints during the installation process. The fitting and pipe are pressed only once the pipe has been inserted to the required insertion depth, which ensures a safe, dependable and long-lasting connection. There is no need for lubrication and the joints will leak until pressed to show incomplete pressing during pressure testing.
Sprinkler systems Another key application for press-fit systems in high rise residential buildings is for sprinkler systems, which continue to be a key topic of conversation following the safety changes to the building regulations. For many years, retrospective installation of sprinklers into multi-occupancy buildings has been regarded as messy, disruptive, unattractive, and too expensive. With this perception from the construction industry – and without regulations driving the necessity of installations in existing buildings – it has been rare for systems to be added retrospectively to buildings. In fact, with modern press-fit systems, the opposite is true. As we have learnt, press-fit systems offer fast, reliable connections, with no hot works – not to mention lightweight piping and a clean finish too. That’s why systems like Geberit Mapress are proving the perfect option for sprinkler pipes, gas supply systems, water supply systems and more. faster and refined the heating water temperature and system output compared to the previous gravity systems. It also allowed for smaller pipework diameters which helped to increase system economy. “In 1953, the first glandless heating circulator the Wilo-Perfecta was launched. It delivered high performance, despite its small size, and was the first maintenance-free heating pump. This was a significant innovation which continues through to modern day pump types using glandless pump technology. “We released the world’s first electronically-controlled heating circulator, the Wilo-Star, in 1988,” says Lee. With integrated differential pressure control sensing for infinitely variable motor speed and performance adjustment, it was set apart from conventional heating circulators with a substantial energy saving benefit and system noise reduction on low load condition. “Another global landmark followed in 2001, when Wilo introduced the world’s first high-efficiency pump for heating, air
conditioning and cooling applications. The ‘Wilo-Stratos’ consumes up to 80% less electricity than uncontrolled circulators. This ground-breaking energy efficient technology was well ahead of worldwide energy labelling targets for energy consumption. The next generation ‘Wilo-Stratos MAXO’ in 2017 marked our entry into the future of pump technology and digital networking, with increased energy efficiency and the first introduction to ‘Smart Pump’ technology.” But tradition is just as important for Wilo Group as innovation, which is why the company built its new state of the art headquarters and Industry 4.0 smart production facility – Wilopark – exactly where it all started: in Dortmund, Germany. Wilopark is fully climate-neutral, in line with the company’s sustainability targets, and Wilo Group been selected as one of the Global Top 50 Sustainability & Climate Leaders. Wilo has been operating in the UK for 37 years and the subsidiary is based in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire. “We remember our roots to prepare ourselves for the challenges of the future,” Lee adds. “Having both great foresight and an ambitious, pioneering spirit, means our products, systems and services are created to form a future-orientated and environmentally-sound portfolio.” To discover more about Wilo, please www.rdr.link/pag014

SPECIAL REPORT I Hot and cold-water supply systems
Supply Side
For many years, metal pipework systems have been seen as the go-to solution for hot and cold-water supply system installations. However, to help contractors and installers make more informed choices, here, Shane Mooney, Product Manager at Aliaxis UK, explores the benefits of plastic hot and cold-water supply systems.
W
hen it comes to ensuring the comfort and safety of a building’s residents, whether in the residential, commercial, healthcare or education sector, a key factor is ensuring that they have access to the right temperature and pressure of water throughout. While metal may have been the plumbing industry’s go-to choice for hot and cold water installations for many years, there may be an alternative…
Efficient installation When it comes to choosing a hot and cold-water supply system, an important factor to consider is its installation. With this stage of the construction sequence being one where contractors can either make or break time and cost savings, a product that offers a faster and more efficient installation is key. Here, plastic hot and cold pipework systems can come out on top. Part of the speedy installation comes from the fact that pipes can be jointed using simple and quick solvent weld processes, meaning fast and efficient jointing and less need for specialist training. Since no hot work processes are required, installers can realise a considerable improvement to

safety on site, reducing the risk of fire and helping to keep people and buildings safe. The lightweight nature of plastic pipework systems in comparison to their metallic counterparts can further contribute to the safety of installation teams, making pipes and fittings easier to manipulate and reducing the risk of manual handling injuries.
Long life Of course, as well as the installation, it’s also important to consider what happens after construction on site has finished and the building is occupied. Ensuring a product is specified and installed that offers durability and a long lifespan is essential, both for a satisfied end-client and to also protect against call backs further down the line. When comparing the efficiency of plastic hot and cold supply systems with their metal equivalent, plastic systems can offer increased levels of durability. The primary
reason for this is the fact that plastic is protected from the corrosion risks that metal materials can be prone to. As well as prolonging the overall system’s lifespan, installing corrosion-resistant plastic pipework can reduce the likelihood of replacement parts being needed. It can also help to protect against corrosion damage caused to buildings or their services. Corrosion can not only cause damage on a structural level, it can also present public health risks too, with the possibility of particles of rust or metal contaminating the water supply, making it unsafe for building occupants to drink. What’s more, opting for an engineered plastic pipe system with a smooth bore (the internal pipe wall) means less opportunity for bacteria to find a safe place to hide, reducing the chance of harmful quantities of bacteria being released into the water supply.
Since no hot work processes are required, installers can realise a considerable improvement to safety on site Sustainability The benefits of a smooth bore don’t end there either, contributing to an efficient flow of water and low frictional losses throughout the system. In turn, this can all help to maintain optimum pump efficiency and reduce the operational carbon footprint of the building – key given the net zero 2050 deadline. This theme of sustainability is a big topic of conversation within the wider construction industry, with clients increasingly pushing the green agenda within their developments and projects. All too often, plastic can have a reputation of being at odds with this more sustainably conscious future. However, it’s important not to confuse hard-wearing plastic building materials with single-use plastics, such as bottles, carrier bags or packaging. Plastic hot and cold systems can have a very long lifespan – far removed from the throw-away plastic perception. The HTA system for distributing hot and cold water and the Superflo ABS system for cold and chilled water, supplied by Aliaxis UK, are both alternatives to metallic options. Both systems are WRAS approved and supplied with a comprehensive range of pipes, fittings and valves. As well as the physical products themselves, contractors and installers can also benefit from Aliaxis UK’s technical support offering, from CAD modelling and design support to the pre-fabrication service. ADD A TOUCH OF STYLE Heated towel rails are a staple feature in many domestic bathrooms and thanks to evolutions in design and technology, a wide range of flexible options are available. Alex Burgess, National Sales Manager at The Radiator Company, looks at some of the options and how designer towel rails can add value to bathroom projects.
ccording to the most recent report from Rated People, a new bathroom installation was the fourth most popular home improvement project in 2021 and professionals are expecting demand to continue this year. This is fantastic news for the industry, but with homeowners inspired by the latest trends on Instagram, TikTok and lifestyle television programmes, each project will no doubt be different.
A
To offer new and interesting installations and create some ‘wow factor’ for customers, being aware of the different heating and towel rail solutions available on the market and how they can help to achieve the homeowner’s desired aesthetic can assist with meeting every project brief and application. Where a plumbed chrome or white standard ladder towel rail has traditionally been the go-to-solution, design-led options can complement or even enhance the overall look of the space.
24 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Thanks to developments in engineering and materials, manufacturers have been able to design towel rails with more creativity and even customisation in mind. For example, side loading towel rails like The Radiator Company’s Echo provide a new and modern take on a traditional ladder rail – with the added convenience of being able to simply slide a towel onto (and off) the rail. In addition, models that can be finished in a wide range of colours can help to
024_PHPI_JUN22_Layout 1 07/05/2022 13:02 Page 25
achieve a customer’s interior ambitions and individuality – whether colour be used to seamlessly blend with the design of the entire bathroom (such as a sleek use of black to match other bathroom appliances in this popular colour), or if the customer wishes to make more of a statement. For example, colour blocking is a popular design trend based on bringing two or more bold colours together to create a bright, vibrant and contemporary look. It can be easily achieved by selecting towel rails in contrasting colours to the walls and other features like cabinets, bath panels and accessories.
Energy efficiency Although it can be useful to have towel rails installed as part of the central heating system, this method is not ideal for end users who wish to use them during the summer months when the central heating system is switched off. To offer customers more versatility, electric and dual-fuel models help to reduce demand on the boiler. They are also available in many design formats to meet customer requirements and preference. Dual-fuel offers the best of both worlds as these models can operate either using the plumbed central heating supply, or an electric supply heating element for year-round use. Alternatively, there are electric self-contained towel rails on offer. These can be installed quickly and easily as there is no need for any new pipework. What’s
models that can be finished in a wide range of colours can help to achieve a customer’s interior ambitions more, the user can take total control – ensuring an efficient solution, operating only when the user flicks the switch. Furthermore, choosing models manufactured with aluminium should be a consideration for those looking to make a more sustainable choice. This material
heats quickly and uses less water, thus placing less demand on the central heating source. It also works well at lower water temperatures, making it suited for households that use renewable energy such as heat pumps.
Take control For an even more streamlined end user experience, consider installing Bluetooth controlled elements that conveniently enable the towel rail to be controlled via an app. Specifying elements with this functionality can help users to closely control energy usage as well as create tailored operation phases that can be adjusted to user comfort.
Finishing touches It is also important to consider how accessories like valves and pipe covers can be incorporated and how they improve the overall result. For example, applying pipe and shroud covers ensures a neat finish that removes the need to paint copper pipes or hide unsightly holes drilled into the floor or wall for the feed pipe. Selecting the right, high quality valves will ensure that the radiator continues to perform at optimum efficiency. What’s more, valves come in a wide range of shapes, sizes and finishes and it is important to select products that complement the radiator’s design and the aesthetic of the room. Condensation is a real and present danger, not a damp squib, says Paul Williams, Product Manager at Domus Ventilation.
C
ondensation forms when the humidity level in the indoor air reaches saturation point and that air comes into contact with a cold surface, such as a window, turning into liquid water. Surface condensation is linked to everyday home activities such as cooking, bathing, washing and drying clothes, and even just breathing. Kitchens and bathrooms are usually the most affected areas as moisture levels are typically highest. And it isn’t just a nuisance. Excess condensation left within a property can lead to the formation of damp patches then mould growth. The potential health impacts include asthma, eye irritation, respiratory problems, skin reactions, headaches and persistent sneezing. Even more serious problems can result from exposure to mycotoxins – chemicals released by toxic mould. Condensation also has consequences for the property. Mould and dampness can lead to musty smells, staining, peeling wallpaper, cracked wall surfaces, plaster degradation, warped window frames and even structural damage over time, all of which comes at a cost to repair.
AIR TIME Widespread issue The English Housing Survey Headline Report 2020-21 stated that in 2020 2% of homes had problems with condensation and mould (namely where there are
26 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
extensive patches of mould growth on walls and ceilings and/or mildew on soft furnishings). When you consider there are an estimated 24 million households in England, that 2% equates to 480,000 homes suffering from serious condensation and mould. Over the years, the onus has been placed on residents to make lifestyle changes to reduce condensation, such as drying clothes outside. However, recent research has verified that construction and external factors play more of a role in the development of these issues than residents’ behaviour: damp and mould are directly linked to badly insulated and poorly ventilated houses. If we improve the ventilation in a home, we lower the humidity. It really is as simple as that.
026_PHPI_JUN22_Layout 1 09/05/2022 15:20 Page 27
Retrofit options For existing properties, the most cost-effective options are bathroom and kitchen intermittent extraction fans or single flow, continuous running decentralised mechanical ventilation fans, such as the new Domus Ventilation D-dMEV. Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) units can also be used which gently pressurise a dwelling to expel stale and humid air through natural ventilation points.
Kitchens and bathrooms are usually the most affected areas as moisture levels are typically highest.
New build solutions For new builds, the options are more widespread and ultimately more effective. In addition to intermittently operating extract fans, Mechanical Extract Ventilation (MEV) units and Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) can be deployed. MEV units, such as Domus Ventilation’s CMX-MULTI, provide constant low level ventilation by extracting waste, damp air from bathrooms and kitchens through a system of ducting. These are best suited to apartments and small to medium sized houses. MVHR systems go one step further by
combining extraction with supply. The extracted air is passed across a high efficiency heat exchanger located inside the MVHR unit, to remove and transfer the otherwise wasted heat. The exhaust air is then expelled into the atmosphere. At the same time fresh filtered supply air is drawn across the opposite side of the heat exchanger and pre-warmed before being distributed through ceiling mounted grilles to habitable rooms.
The new breed of MVHR units on the market, such as our own HRXE-HERA and HRXE-AURA, are highly energy efficient with models available with integral humidity sensors which automatically increases the extract speed as humidity levels increase. These mechanical systems provide a long term, cost effective solution. To discover more about ventilation please www.rdr.link/pag018

TRENDS & INNOVATIONS
It’s no secret that lockdown reminded everyone of the importance of their homes and, two years on, tradespeople are still experiencing huge demand from customers looking to tackle home improvement projects. Kitchens and bathrooms, in particular, remain popular spaces with research last year reporting that these rooms were among the top areas for improvement in the home. Here, Christopher Tranter, Senior Product Manager at Bristan, takes a look at some key trends and innovations that installers should keep an eye on over the next 12 months.
Warmer finishes In both the kitchen and bathroom space, it’s all about finishes. Colour trends are getting warmer and we’re seeing a shift away from chrome on taps and showers. Black, of course, continues to be a hugely popular colour trend; indeed, we have introduced black finishes across our top bathroom products and expect this to remain big with homeowners for some time. In addition to this, brushed gold and antique brass finishes are also gaining popularity, with trends like brushed metallic or gun metal emerging. Of course, chrome’s popularity comes from the fact that it is extremely hard wearing, easy to clean and long lasting; any alternative finish needs to be rigorously tested and checked to ensure it too will survive in the real world. We submit all our finishes to the most stringent third party testing available before approval, so that customers can be confident in our guarantees.
Sustainability Your customers are becoming increasingly more conscious than ever of sustainability
Boiling water taps Boiling water taps have grown exponentially in recent years with more homeowners turning to the convenience of having instant boiled water on tap. This growth has led to these products becoming increasingly available at a much more accessible price point compared to, say, a few years ago. If your customer is looking to install a boiling water tap, they will, of course, need to ensure they have plenty of space under the sink. Make sure, too, that your chosen brand has a filter on the taps – if you’re installing in a hard water area, it is likely that, without the right filter, it will quickly limescale-up. We recently upgraded our boiling water tap ranges to incorporate a new and improved filter to ensure the best possible protection against this.
28 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
and this will, of course, be a particularly important factor for installers on commercial jobs. So installers should keep front of mind any products that can save water and energy. The good news is that this can be achieved in some simple ways. Fitting flow limiters to taps or on shower handsets or hoses, for instance, is one effective way to reduce water waste. Again, we have recently upgraded our existing range of basin mixer taps to include Neoperl 5ltr/min aerators, reducing waste without affecting the feel of the water flow. This aerator is a small attachment that fits onto the outlet of the tap, controlling the amount of water flowing through. More recent product development has also resulted in the introduction of cold start mixer taps. These ensure that mixer taps operate at the cold water setting when started, avoiding firing up the boiler and saving energy. We will be introducing these in 2023.
028_PHPI_JUN22_Layout 1 09/05/2022 15:21 Page 29
Ease of fitting And, whilst not a trend, it is essential for installers to be constantly on the lookout for smarter ways of working. Our Easyfit technology was introduced with this in mind, making kitchen taps up to 70% quicker to install than a standard ‘c’ plate fixing. Replacing showers (often a time consuming task) is another way installers can look to save time and work more efficiently. All showers from our core range come with our fast-fix Wallmount 12, giving
installers a quick and easy way to isolate the water supply at the wall. In addition, it provides the option of installing the mount on first fix and then adding the bar shower itself on second fix. This is perfect not only for jobs where you want to protect the whole bar shower whilst other bathroom work takes place, but also on larger commercial projects or new build projects. For more information please www.rdr.link/pag019
Making a splash with your customers Andy Steer, resident Bristan expert and experienced plumber says… “With plumbers more in demand than ever, it’s important to stay on top of current trends and what might be influencing your customers. Don’t underestimate the impact that the likes of Instagram will be having on their expectations – they will be increasingly looking for kitchens and bathrooms that have that wow factor and may often be looking for affordable ways to replicate trends that appear online. But all this needs to be taken into account alongside working more efficiently – don’t forget to also look at manufacturer training opportunities to make sure you are using the most efficient ways of working and keeping on top of product development.”
SLATE EFFECT SHOWER TRAY In a move is to meet a growing trend for adding colour and textures into the bathroom space, Kudos has introduced a slate effect finish into its Connect2 shower tray collection. The dark grey tray features an exclusive surface pattern taken directly from a piece of locally sourced slate, and the new tray is made in the Kudos factory just outside Kendal in the Lake District, an area known for its use of slate in construction. Whilst the finish may be slate grey, the new Connect2 tray is manufactured in the same acrylic capped ABS filled with a structural resin bonded stone, to maintain
the strength and durability benefits of its material. It is both slip and stain resistant and contains an anti-microbial additive to inhibit the growth of microbes including bacteria and mould.
Low profile It has a low profile when installed, standing at just 35mm in height, and has been designed to avoid standard joist spans – thanks to the positioning of an offset dual waste outlet – allowing the installer to choose the waste free from obstruction to connect. The tray may have to be rotated 90 or 180 degrees

(dependent on shape) to accommodate the fixed joists, but once set, the installer can use the blanking plug provided to seal the unused waste and plumb in the hi-flow waste and trap, avoiding any need to lift the tray off the floor. If both waste holes are free then both wastes can be connected for even faster water removal. A reinforced, magnetically secured waste cover, that’s easily removed for cleaning, then sits over the waste blanking plug to complete the installation. The collection of Connect2 trays, which come in a choice of slate effect, high gloss white or slip resistant SR finish in white, are available in a range of 28 different sizes from 800mm square to 1700x900mm rectangle, including seven new sizes recently launched to expand the quadrant and mid-size rectangular options.

BUSINESS & TRAINING
THE KEY TO FUTURE GROWTH
Apprenticeships can be a fantastic, cost-effective way of securing the best new talent whilst contributing towards a more skilled and qualified workforce. Lindsay Talks, Product Manager at JTL, a leading work-based provider in the building services engineering sector across England and Wales, explains why there is a need for a renaissance in apprenticeships over the next few years.
W
hilst a university education can be a wonderful experience and a degree a necessity for certain careers it isn’t always the best path for everyone. Obtaining a trade can provide you with a skill-set for life, a dependable career, and for many, the opportunity to ultimately set up their own business. An apprenticeship is a work-based, government funded training programme for people aged 16 and over which leads to a nationally recognised qualification. There is currently a skills shortage across many sectors and plumbing, alongside heating and ventilating engineers, is no exception. However, the opportunities within this arena are huge and can virtually guarantee entrants a job for life – something becoming increasingly
difficult to find in other walks of life. Take, for example, one of the highest profile plumbers in recent times – Charlie Mullins, who reportedly sold his share in Pimlico for around £125 million last year. He undertook a four-year apprenticeship and then set up his own company and never looked back. He was a great advocate for apprenticeships, recognising that if sufficient numbers of new talent did not enter the industry, there would be a major shortage of plumbers further down the line.
Business support This is where we at JTL aim to make a significant difference, by encouraging and supporting companies to take on apprentices. There often needs to be a change in mindset within some firms that perceive apprenticeships as difficult to
manage and that too much supervision is needed when resources may be stretched. However, JTL can make the process far easier to manage by assigning each business with dedicated training officer support to work with the apprentice and their employer throughout the qualification process. We also have a dedicated national customer service unit with experts available to answer any questions.
Solid foundation A JTL apprenticeship provides a solid foundation for a young person, enabling them to develop the necessary skills to realise their full potential. As training for 16-18 year-olds is fully government funded, prospective employers aren’t required to pay anything towards a learner’s training costs. If the apprentice is over 19, the employer may be required to pay up to just 5% of the total cost over the duration of the apprenticeship. There is no doubt that plumbers will have to adapt to new technologies in the years ahead by installing such items as heat pumps, and with hundreds of thousands of new homes set to be built each year the demand for their services will only grow – apprenticeships hold the key to meeting that demand. To find out more about how JTL can support your business with taking on an apprentice, including its apprenticeship matchmaking service, please www.rdr.link/pag020

UPSKILL FOR LOW TEMPERARURE HEATING
When the new Approved Document L comes into force in June, new heating systems will need to be designed to operate more efficiently and with an increased focus on correct sizing and heat loss calculations. Mark Krull, Managing Director of LCL Awards, explains the training options for heating installers who want to upskill for the new standard.
T
he introduction of low temperature heating and hot water systems to new and existing homes is a key strategy in reducing carbon emissions from domestic buildings over the next decade and beyond. In June this year, Part L of the Building Regulations will set out new standards for energy efficiency in domestic buildings with the target of cutting emissions by at least 31% compared to current standards before the Future Homes and Buildings Standard comes into effect in 2025. Alongside the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which will stimulate demand for heat pumps over the next three years, this uplift marks a transition to low-carbon heating systems for both new and existing buildings. But heat pumps are not the only technology that meets the new standards. Low temperature heating systems are often renewable, but the latest gas combi boilers combined with underfloor heating, for example, can also meet new efficiency standards. It’s about designing all heating systems for maximum efficiency, while also future proofing them ready for new technologies. An accurate design will show where heating systems are already oversized and ready for a low temperature system without upgrades. Correct design and installation keeps costs down and efficiency up, no matter what the technology. Specialist training in this area will provide value to anyone who installs heating and hot water systems – not just heat pump installers.
What does the new Part L say? According to Approved Document L Volume 1, 2021 edition: “5.10 Where a wet heating system is either: 쎲 a. newly installed 쎲 b. fully replaced in an existing building, including the heating appliance, emitters and associated pipework All parts of the system including pipework and emitters should be sized to allow the space heating system to operate effectively and in a manner that meets the heating needs of the dwelling, at a maximum flow temperature of 55°C or lower. “Where it is not feasible to install a space heating system that can operate at this temperature (e.g. where there is insufficient space for larger radiators, or the existing distribution system is provided with higher temperature heat from a low carbon district heat network), the space heating system should be designed to the lowest design temperature possible that will still meet the heating needs of the dwelling.”
Installers are at the heart of delivering change for net zero and having the right skills, knowledge and experience is essential.

Achieving top efficiencies at low temperatures requires a different approach to traditional gas or oil central heating systems. Heat emitters must be able to deliver the same amount of heat to the space at a much lower temperature, therefore accurate heat loss calculations are essential. Radiators and pipework must be correctly sized and if the system is being retrofitted, there might be a trade-off between cost of replacing parts and the loss of efficiency.
What are the training options? Installers are at the heart of delivering change for net zero and having the right skills, knowledge and experience is essential. To meet demand for low temperature heating and hot water technologies, we have recently collaborated with Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) and the Heat Pump Association to design an Ofqual-regulated Level 3 Low Temperature Heating and Hot Water Systems in Dwellings qualification. This training course upskills installers in the concept of low temperature heating systems, allowing them to develop their knowledge and understand the requirements for installing low temperature heating and hot water systems in domestic buildings.

systems training will benefit all heating and hot water system installers looking to become familiar with new technologies and deliver high-efficiency, future-proof solutions to customers, based on the latest industry thinking. Candidates will usually need to hold a relevant N/SVQ Level 2/3 qualification in plumbing, heating and ventilation (domestic or industrial/commercial), oil fired technical services or gas installation and maintenance, but experience of installing wet central heating systems, evidenced either by manufacturer courses certification or Gas Safe Register, OFTEC, MCS or HETAS registration is also acceptable.

SMART CONTROLS
THE FUTURE’S SMART With the rise in energy bills following the recent energy price cap increase, homeowners are searching for ways to save money and lower the amount of energy they use. Remi Volpe, Managing Director at Drayton, discusses the pivotal role smart heating controls have to play and the benefits they can offer to both customers and installers.
I
n a typical UK home, heating and hot water accounts for around 50% of the total energy use which means that now is an ideal time for installers to be working with homeowners to offer them smarter heating solutions. Many options available on the market today not only provide a more intuitive way to heat homes, resulting in lower energy bills and usage, but also help future proof homes for the changes that are going to happen over the coming years. From being smarter about which parts of the house are heated and when, to providing information about where and how energy is used, heating controls now offer a whole host of ways for homeowners to improve the efficiency of their heating system. But what are the benefits and how can they be achieved?
In control One of the most common ways in which energy is wasted is by having the heating
on when it’s not required. Whilst having to alter settings on a more traditional programmable thermostat can be an inconvenience that homeowners would rather not worry about, having a smart control makes it easier than ever to adjust heating schedules. Most smart controls offer the flexibility to adjust these settings at any time, remotely on a smartphone. This feature is ideal for customers with unpredictable lifestyles and helps to ensure energy isn’t wasted by heating an empty house, consequently helping to lower energy bills. Research shows that by just upgrading to a smart programmable thermostat, such as Wiser, homeowners can save 18% on their energy costs.
Multi-zoning Over the past few years, thanks to the advent of increased home working and multi-generational living, homeowners have also become more conscious about the ways in which they heat their homes, especially when it comes to heating empty rooms. This is where a heating control that offers multi-zoning capabilities can be of great benefit. Previously, heating engineers would have used a low loss header system to create different zones, however smart heating controls and smart radiator thermostats have made this easier than ever to achieve. With a control like Wiser, installers can simply fit Wiser Radiator Thermostats onto each radiator within the home to achieve

SMART CONTROLS
Smart modes, which include functions such as optimum stop as well as weather compensation, can also contribute to energy reductions Planning for the future
room-to-room heating control. Rather than setting a heating schedule for the whole house, homeowners can programme individual rooms to be at different temperatures at different times. A multi-zoned smart heating system can save up to 19% more energy in a three-bedroom semi-detached house over a smart thermostat system alone.
Smart modes Smart modes, which include functions such as optimum stop as well as weather compensation, can also contribute to energy reductions whilst keeping homeowners comfortable. Optimum stop monitors environmental conditions to turn off the heating at the optimum time without reducing homeowner comfort or overshooting the desired temperature. For example, Wiser’s Eco Mode combines optimum stop and weather compensation to ensure the heating system is delivering the heating levels that homeowners are looking for, whilst also helping to make the system more efficient and only using energy that is needed.
Insights As many homeowners are now struggling with the increase in energy costs, being able to see where energy is being used is also a huge bonus. Many smart controls now offer a display of energy consumption in real time, allowing homeowners to see exactly how much energy is being used enabling them to make changes if required. This can prove to be a useful tool, as turning the heating down by 1°C can reduce a homeowner’s annual energy bill by £80 and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 320kg. Wiser offers this type of overview in Insights, which can be further enhanced by integrating data from a smart heating system with the Wiser Home app to access Insights+, where homeowners can see their energy savings in monetary values. By combining the use of these smart heating control features, homeowners can reap the benefits of an efficient heating system by making more educated decisions that not only help reduce their carbon emissions, but also their monthly energy usage.
38 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
As we continue to look towards carbon-neutral ways to heat the 23 million homes in the UK that currently rely on gas boilers, it is expected that electric heating methods, such as heat pumps will become widely adopted. As such, smart heating controls are going to play a hugely important role in maximising the efficiency of this technology. By utilising open protocols, such as OpenTherm found in most smart controls, different technologies will effectively be able to ‘talk’ to each other within the same system. This will help ensure interoperability between technologies, enabling heat pumps to modulate and achieve optimal performance. Additionally, hybrid heating systems that incorporate different heat sources are being more widely adopted by homeowners. For installers, the challenge here can be to find a convenient control solution that will be suitable for both elements of the hybrid system. Luckily, there are now heating controls available, such as Wiser, which are compatible with and can incorporate a mix of different heat sources, all of which can be managed in one place via the Wiser Home app. For installers, being clued up on the latest smart heating controls and the features they offer means that they can play a crucial role in helping homeowners across the country make their energy bills more manageable today, whilst also helping to future proof homes for the changes that are set to come. SMART CONTROLS
DESIGN & FUNCTIONALITY
The latest heating controls feature levels of functionality only dreamed of a few years ago. To discover what to look out for PHPI spoke with Jon Tedstone, Head of Sales and Marketing at ESi Controls.
Q
Controls have come a long way in recent years – what are the main features of the latest devices that heating engineers should look out for? There are a plethora of heating controls on the market that heating engineers should carefully select from for their individual installation requirements. An engineer replacing or installing a new boiler should purchase controls which meet Boiler Plus regulations which came into force in April 2018. Most controls manufacturers now offer boiler plus compliant controls which offer time and temperature settings plus load compensation – which provides the ability to modulate the flow temperature from the boiler based on the actual room temperature. This requires the control and boiler to communicate, sometimes via OpenTherm communication. OpenTherm
ensures the boiler modulates the flow temperature to provide an accurate control over the desired room temperature and stops the boiler cycling on and off, therefore reducing gas use, saving money for homeowners. Boiler Plus compliance can also be met using a Smart Control which provides automation of time and temperature settings and optimisation which calculates the time needed for the heating system to reach the desired comfort level, optimising the heating system’s operation to ensure it uses the least amount of energy to attain the desired temperature. Smart controls can be connected to a smart phone or tablet offering the ability for the users to control their systems remotely offering more flexibility to lower energy use.
Q
With a lot of new technology the look of the device and its ease of use are as important as its functionality. Just how important is the design and user interface for smart heating controls?
481 ESi ESRTP4 wired room thermostats were recently installed in a Birmingham private rented tower block
The design of a new smart control must provide the user with a simple, easy to use and understand interface between them

and their heating system. Manufacturers now provide a range of controls which offer different features and functions to suit the homeowner’s age range and personal requirements such as larger clearer screens for the visually impaired and larger temperature selection buttons to allow elderly and vulnerable people to simply turn their heating up or down subject to their comfort levels. Similarly, smart controllers now offer sleeker designs which blend into a modern home featuring glass and stainless steel with a lack of switches and buttons with the controls being touchscreen or app based to suit a younger demographic. It is key for manufacturers to design a range of controls to provide choice for the heating engineer to offer their customers based on their budget, age range and personal preference, to suit the modern lifestyle whilst offering the features and functions to comply with the energy efficiency legislation.
Q
With rising utility prices, energy efficiency is on everyone’s minds. How can the latest Smart Controls help deliver energy savings? With many heating controls being controlled from apps on smart phones and
040_PHPI_JUN22_Layout 1 07/05/2022 13:21 Page 41
tablets, the ability to control your heating at any time of day and from virtually anywhere means you can be in more control than when you are at home. Modern controls allow you to control several heating zones in the home and control these individually and more accurately so you can easily increase the temperature in the rooms you will use as you head home after work, for example. And you can monitor the temperature levels in different parts of the home, reducing temperatures in rooms that will not be used but leaving enough background heat to keep them comfortable. With energy prices increasing its important to take a close look at every way in which energy can be saved and costs kept to a minimum and this is why our controls are OpenTherm compatible. The way OpenTherm works allows far smoother transition of heating control, which reduces energy and saves money. Using OpenTherm will save between 10 and 15% on the gas bill. We’re optimistic that we’ll see increased awareness of OpenTherm controls in the next few months as people begin to realise the savings these controls offer when connected to a modern condensing gas boiler.
Q
Is the same level of control available via a smart phone or tablet?
The design of a new smart control must provide the user with a simple, easy to use and understand interface between them and their heating system. should reflect the individual users of those controls not the latest technology available. We know of social housing providers who claim that as many as 90% of their call outs for heating problems are because the tenant cannot use the controls properly. Elderly and vulnerable people may prefer a simple control that they can understand easily and operate without needing to think about the complexities of smart controls. The latest wi-fi controlled
touch screen controls may be the height of functionality for younger homeowners and tenants and they may cope well with them, but some older people may struggle. Many manufacturers, including us at ESi have a range of controls available and we can offer simpler heating controls which still comply with the legislation as well as the latest smart control options. For more information please www.rdr.link/pag029
It can be – yes. Most manufacturers now have an app that allows you to control your heating from pretty much anywhere from your smart phone or tablet. As Smart control grows in the UK you will be able to control most of your appliances and electronic devices remotely via an app and one of the options will be to control your heating across the different zones in the home so that its comfortable for when you arrive home after work, or to reduce energy consumption when going out.
Q
The latest Smart Controls may not be appropriate for all customers – what options are available for users that crave, or require, a more straightforward solution. This is essential and we think so important. The type of heating controls you install

NEW MONOBLOC ASHPS LAUNCHED BY VIESSMANN
V
iessmann has launched two new monobloc air source heat pumps, the Vitocal 150-A and Vitocal 151-A. Each is available with outputs of 10, 13 and 16kW. Both the wall-mounted Vitocal 150-A and the floor-standing Vitocal 151-A have a maximum flow temperature of 70°C (at an outside temperature down to -10°C), meaning that in most cases they can use existing radiators and do not require under-floor heating. The new products use the same control platform as Viessmann’s boilers, so that they are compatible with the rest of the company’s product range, and both integrate previously separate system
elements in the indoor unit (IDU), reducing installation time. Both models also feature Viessmann’s ‘Super Silent Design’. The Vitocal 151-A has an integral, 190-litre DHW cylinder.
Compact design The Vitocal 150-A and 151-A feature a space-saving design and incorporate the Hydro AutoControl feature. The buffer tank, expansion vessel, and overflow valve – components which usually have to be installed and connected separately – are now integrated in the IDU. Locating the defrost buffer inside the IDU also ensures that the heat pump never fails to start, regardless of system temperature. The system uses R290 (propane) refrigerant with a GWP of less than 1. With a COP (Coefficient of Performance) of 4.9-5.0 (according to EN 14511 for A7/W35 and depending on the model), the new heat pumps generate up to five times the usable heat for heating and hot water from one kilowatt hour of electricity and heat from the outside air. Commissioning these new heat pumps
is achieved using the Vitoguide app. The patented Hydro AutoControl hydraulic function assists reliable integration into existing heating systems. The Service Link integrated internet connection allows for remote updates with a fast connection, even if there is domestic internet disruption and the unit is not connected to the internet. Viessmann’s Marketing Director, Darren McMahon, said: “When the time comes for homeowners to replace their boilers, more are now looking for renewable alternatives. The Vitocal 150-A and 151-A air source heat pumps help answer this growing need. The end-user gets an efficient, environmentally-friendly solution that delivers heat like a boiler; the engineer gets a unit that’s much easier and faster to install. Having fewer pieces of equipment has cut the time needed for installation by 90 minutes.” Installation training courses for these new products are available through the Viessmann Academy. NAVIEN INTRODUCES NEW NCB700 COMBI
N
avien has launched the NCB700 combi gas boiler, described as, “the first product of its type capable of delivering hot water to three bathrooms simultaneously.” The company says this makes it suitable for large properties. The NCB700 has been designed to maximise recirculation of domestic hot water (DHW) in applications to reduce water wastage and offer flow rates up to 22 litres per minute (at 35°C temperature rise). The new boiler features a turndown ratio of 15:1, is hydrogen-ready and can also achieve ErP A+ when used with the company’s Smart Plus controller. It is available in two models capable of delivering up to 41kW and 54kW of hot water respectively. By utilising a flow adjustment valve and auto mixing valve, the NCB700 is able to provide hot water to three showers or baths at the same time. A built-in recirculation pump helps ensure hot water is rapidly supplied. This can be used in conjunction with the NaviCirc recirculation valve, to set up a secondary hot water return system.
Hydrogen ready Commenting on the new product, Jason Davies, National Business Manager at Navien, said: “As the design of UK homes has evolved over the years, so too has
demand for hot water, especially when there are three bathrooms or more. We’re delighted to introduce the NCB700 combi boiler to the market, as it provides a reliable and high-quality means of providing ample hot water for even the largest of families.” He continued: “The boilers are also hydrogen-ready, which is great from a

A
n aging oil boiler in a 5-bedroom Essex barn conversion has been replaced with a Modutherm Alira air source heat pump. The RHI-compliant installation was completed in February 2022. Central to the installation was the need to maintain comfortable room temperatures all year round by utilising the existing underfloor heating and radiator circuits in the 3,200 sq. ft property. The 8.5kW heat pump was connected to the existing 4-zone manifold, delivering a flow temperature of 45˚C to the underfloor circuits and oversized radiators. Each zone is thermostatically controlled, allowing the entire home to be maintained at a comfortable temperature. For the property’s DHW requirements, a new 300 litre Juniper XL stainless steel heat pump-ready cylinder was selected, alongside Modutherm’s wall mounted Hydraulic Module. The Alira heat pump has low sound pressure levels of 45dB(A) and a ‘Silent Mode’ for even quieter operation at night, which allowed the unit to be sited beneath a bedroom. Commenting on the installation, the property owner said: “We have been really impressed with the new heat pump and how easy it was to install. The system has been working efficiently, even during some cold winter snaps, so we’re confident it will be far more cost-effective to run throughout the year. It’s certainly been worth the investment, especially with the RHI available to support the installation costs.”

BUSHBOARD EXTENDS WALL PANELLING SYSTEM
MAKITA COOLER/WARMER BOX
Bushboard has extended its wall panelling system, Nuance, to reflect changing interior trends and meet demand for natural looking bathroom wall solutions. New for 2022, the updated collection includes 11 new options designed to enhance the brand’s existing ranges – Nuance, Nuance Designer and Nuance Acrylic – as well as Nuance Vanity Worksurfaces. Inspired by nature, Nuance offers five on-trend categories that combine the appearance of stone, marble, wood, travertine and quartz together with textured finishes that have a realistic look and feel. Manufactured in Britain since 1935, all Nuance panels have high performance surfaces and a synthetic homogenous core that is impervious to water. This makes them well suited for shower areas, wet rooms and finishing walls around baths. Flexible panel sizes include post-formed panels and standard tongue and groove panels, which can be linked together to create walk-in wet rooms or shower enclosures. The 160mm finishing panel allows a run of tongue and groove panels to be finished vertically, also with a neat postformed edge detail. Paul Findley, Product Sales Manager for Nuance, said: “Whether tackling a complete bathroom renovation, refurbishment work or updating a shower cubicle, fitters can rely on the Nuance collection to find a product that will suit most customers’ personal tastes and requirements.”

HMRC
Tax Avoidance – Don’t Get Caught Out Tax avoidance schemes have been named for the first time by HMRC as users are warned they could face large tax bills. This is the first time HMRC has used new powers to name tax avoidance schemes and their promoters as part of a campaign to warn the public not to get caught up in tax avoidance. Mary Aiston, Director of Counter Avoidance, HMRC, said: “New legal powers allow us to name promoters and the schemes they peddle much faster, and this announcement is just the first step. But we need the public to be vigilant, and that’s why we’re also helping people identify, and steer clear, of these schemes through our Tax Avoidance – Don’t Get Caught Out campaign.” A video highlighting the experience of a critical care nurse who was recommended a tax avoidance scheme through her agency, has been published by HMRC. The video explains the risks of becoming involved in a tax avoidance scheme and the warning signs customers should look out for.
