PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER is a business journal for those involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating and plumbing systems. It is available to the trade at leading heating and plumbing merchants and specialist outlets throughout the UK.

Warm front

Although many heating and plumbing installers are often working flat-out, for some the summer can bring with it a bit of a lull. For many it is a welcome slow down, a chance to replenish the batteries ahead of the often hectic heating season and take a well-earned break.

But whether installers are flat-out or taking things at a slower pace, working on job sites through the summer can pose its own set of challenges. Whilst many love the warmer weather, if the summer of 2022 is anything to go by, we may well again have high temperatures that make working more of a challenge. And although many already know to take care when working in hot and sunny conditions it is always worth reiterating, if you are working outside make sure to apply appropriate protection to exposed body parts, including your head, and keep well hydrated.

When it comes to clothing, a lot of advancements have been made over the years with the latest fabric technologies offering good moisture control and wicking properties to help wearers keep cool. There are also options that provide protection from UV and some designs also consider ventilation. All while also delivering the workwear essentials of durability and flexibility.

So, whether it is trousers, tops or hats, appropriate workwear can play its part in helping installers stay cool when the temperatures begin to rise.

Another challenge, although one that is more long-term rather than seasonal, is recruiting more people into the sector. For example, one sector organisation recently indicated that there could be a shortage of around 100,000 heat pump installers across the UK, if government targets are to be met.

Perhaps this is one area in which the growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) –much reported in the national press in the last month or two –could be beneficial, with more people seeking careers in a trade. As someone recently pointed out at an event we attended: ‘AI can’t fit a bath.’

Recruitment and retention are challenges for many industries – one reason why the sector needs to be visible in schools and colleges encouraging young people to consider a career in the trade. Ongoing support and assistance are also key, to help prevent people from dropping out of courses or apprenticeships. It is also important for small and medium sized companies to consider taking on apprentices – giving the next generation similar opportunities which many currently in the sector received in the past.

APHC GOES GREEN WITH SOLAR PANELS

The Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors (APHC) has installed solar panels at its Head Office in Birmingham. The company says that with the installation of the solar panels it has significantly reduced its reliance on non-renewable sourcesof energy.

“We are thrilled to be able to power our operations with clean, renewable energy,” said John Thompson, APHC’s CEO. “The installation of solar panels is a significant step towards reducing our carbon footprint and making a positive impact on the environment. It is our hope that this move will inspire other businesses in our industry to take similar steps towards sustainability.”

The installation of the solar panels was completed by a member company of APHC, ASK Renewable Solutions Ltd.

Adam Killa, Director of ASK Renewable Solutions commented: “Electricity is now becoming the chosen solution for additional demands in our lifestyle. It was a pleasure working with the team at APHC installing the Solar PV system.”

MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS CONTINUE

New research by Simply Business, a provider of small business insurance, indicates that half (56%) of SME owners in the construction industry say they have experienced poor mental health over the past 12 months.

Half of self-employed construction workers say that ‘financial worries’ are having the single biggest impact on their mental health.

Alongside financial worries it would appear that long hours are also taking their toll on some SME owners. According to the survey, almost one in six (15%) believe a lack of time off is directly impacting their mental health.

Bea Montoya, Chief Operating Officer at Simply Business, commented: “The worrying state of small business owners’ mental health has been laid bare in our recent research – with over half suffering from poor mental health in the last 12 months alone. During a cost of living crisis, the self-employed are working at capacity. Long hours, rare breaks and sleepless nights are leaving many on the brink of burnout.”

BLUEPRINTFORRURALDECARBONISATION

A new project, converting a rural coastal village in Cornwall’s heating to run off Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), has demonstrated how renewable liquid fuels can offer a low cost pathway for rural homes to decarbonise their heating systems.

Over the course of 18 months, 17 homes as well as the local church and school, in the village of Kehelland, participated in a scheme run by industry trade bodies UKIFDA and OFTEC, alongside UKIFDA member Mitchell & Webber, to convert their kerosene heating oil-using boilers to use HVO. The Kehelland demonstration was part of a larger project covering 150 premises across the UK.

OFTEC and UKIFDA CEOs Paul Rose and Ken Cronin said the demonstrator shows: “there is an alternative way forward for millions of off grid residents who can neither afford nor want to install a heat pump. This report shows there is a clear blueprint for these households to decarbonise their home heating.”

The project found that the upfront cost of converting the oil boiler to run on HVO was £500 per property, while the emissions from the properties were calculated as c.88% reduced compared to kerosene. It also found that only minor modifications to the heating system were required, conversion took just an hour per property and could be done as part of the annual service.

SURVEYINDICATESHOMEOWNERS’ SATISFACTIONWITHHEATPUMPS

People who have had heat pumps installed in older houses are just as likely to be satisfied with their heating than those in newer properties, according to a survey of heat pump users.

Nesta, the innovation charity, commissioned Eunomia to conduct a survey of over 2,500 domestic heat pump owners and over 1,000 domestic gas boiler owners in England, Scotland and Wales, in December 2022.

Nesta’s analysis of the survey finds that among people who have had a heat pump installed while living in their current home, 81% are as satisfied or more satisfied with heat pumps compared to their previous heating system. The figure is similar, 83%, when looking at heat pump owners in Victorian or older properties.

Madeleine Gabriel, Director of Sustainable Future at Nesta, said: “It’s time to put to rest outdated ideas that older homes don’t support heat pumps. The rollout of heat pumps across all property types in Britain is proving that the age of your house doesn’t have to be a big factor when deciding whether to get a greener heating system.”

‘FLEXIBLE’BREAKDOWN COVER FOR VAN USERS

With many small businesses struggling with rising costs and economic uncertainty, the RAC has introduced ‘flexible’ breakdown cover designed to make it easier to manage spending on business-critical essentials such as breakdown cover.

The RAC is to give its small business customers additional financial flexibility allowing them to spread the cost of their breakdown policies via monthly rolling contracts paid for on Direct Debit. Nicky Brown, Head of the RAC’s small business team, said: “Working with so many small companies we know how important breakdown cover is to ensuring smooth and efficient business operation every day. Having flexible rolling monthly contracts that can be amended at any point to better manage outgoings at time of rising costs is a definite benefit for any small business.”

HEATING INSTALLERS UNDERTAKE CHARITY INSTALLATIO N

Grant Gundelfinger, Heating Installer Awards national winner 2021, recently gathered a team of expert installers and esteemed brands to help a local man rebuild his heating system after his house was severely damaged in a fire.

The group volunteered to participate in installing the new low-temperature, wet heating system, completely free of charge.

“The kindness and generosity in our industry never fails to amaze me and I’m delighted that so many local people, and companies, were able to get involved,” said Grant Gundelfinger.

MERCHANT Q1 SALES UP YEAR-ON-YEAR

The latest Plumbing & Heating Merchant Index (PHMI) report, published in May, shows total value sales through specialist Plumbing & Heating merchants were up +9.6% in Q1 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.

Volume sales were +0.4% higher and prices also increased +9.1%. With one more trading day this year, like-for-like sales were +7.8% up.

Rising prices

Mike Rigby, CEO of MRA Research, which produces the report commented: “It looks as though 2023 has picked up where 2022 left off, with rising prices and falling volumes. With material cost inflation finally beginning to show signs of easing, the repair, maintain and improve (RMI) market is back. Trades are expecting to be busy on renovation projects as homeowners swap move for improve, and dream homes for more budget friendly ‘project’ homes. Expect to see a continued uplift in products which improve efficiency or are kinder to the planet.”

BRITISH GAS GIVES HEAT PUMP WARMTH GUARANTEE

British Gas is to offer a new Warm Home Promise – a commitment to only install a heat pump if it will heat a home as well as a traditional boiler.

The move, it says, is to address a key barrier to heat pump uptake, with its new Warm Home Promise, guaranteeing customers their money back if a heat pump does not warm their home as effectively as a traditional gas boiler.

The new promise has been created to offer reassurance for those that may be hesitant about making the switch to a heat pump.

Andrew Middleton, Managing Director, British Gas Zero commented: “Heat pumps are an important part of helping the UK lower its home emissions to reach our net zero targets so we are doing all we can to increase take up. We recognise that the transition from a boiler to a heat pump can be daunting and want to reassure our customers that they can effectively heat their home, even through the coldest spells in Winter. Our engineers are ready to guide consumers through this process and we are making sure they are as affordable and accessible as possible.”

Grant UK has added two new episodes of its Net Zero Heating Show to the leading podcast platforms.

In the two new episodes, Grant UK’s hosts are joined by one of the heating sector’s leading female figures to learn more about her career and in the other episode, members of Grant UK’s in-house Design Team come together to talk about all things underfloor heating. The addition of these latest episodes now brings the total number of episodes within the Net Zero Heating Show, which was launched in March 2022, to ten with each one placing a different focus on sustainable heating.

“We are very pleased that two new episodes of our Net Zero Heating Show are now available for listeners to download and enjoy,” commented Anna Wakefield, Head of Marketing at Grant UK.

HEAT PUMPS

The future of heating is an ongoing discussion in the UK. Much of this commentary has centred on the government’s decision to prioritise heat pump technology over all others, in some ways this is understandable as they are “here and now” while some of the other technologies such as Hydrogen needs an infrastructure to be created.

Extending the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme was introduced in an effort to promote the take-up of heat pumps. This incentive was launched in spring 2022 and offers homeowners grants of £5,000 for an air-to-water heat pump and £6,000 for a ground source heat pump to assist with the installations of the new heating systems.

However, as the first year of the scheme came to a close a few weeks ago, unfortunately, its impact thus far has been slightly underwhelming. Statistics show that of the 30,000 vouchers budgeted for, only around 10,000 were redeemed.

Regrettably, this shortfall in spend was taken back into the treasury and will not be allowed to run over into subsequent years.

The government has also announced the extension of the boiler upgrade scheme until 2028. However, there doesn’t appear to be an extension to the budget,

AN UPDATE

or at least no announcement as of yet, which was originally set at £450 million to be spent over three years. We are optimistic that the extension of the scheme by a further two years and the potential for any money unspent will be rolled over into those two years would improve the customer demand for the technologies.

Equipping installers

We believe the manufacturers are doing their bit by providing both products and training on the new technology to installers. This will be supplemented by the recent and very welcomed announcement of £5 million worth of funding for installers who wish to upgrade their skills to be heat pump qualified. In doing so, installers will become eligible for grants of up to £500, which will be required to be matched by the training provider, which can take the form of vouchers or training courses. As one of the first applicants of such a scheme, Worcester Bosch has witnessed first-hand the benefits of having installers on our premises and training them on our appliances.

Heat Pump Investment Accelerator

A further £30 million of funding has also been allocated to the recently announced Heat Pump Investment Accelerator competition. Open to UK-registered businesses, applicants can apply for up to £15 million per project with the grant funding to innovate and manufacture heat pumps, their required components or ancillary components such as cylinders or buffer tanks.

Notwithstanding all this priming of the market by the government, there is still, unfortunately, a shortfall in consumer demand. Although disappointing, this is understandable when placed in the context of the current economic climate, which is the ongoing cost-of-living stretching household finances and reducing the amount of disposable income available for many.

However, Worcester Bosch is optimistic that a number of the actions taken by the government will see the market rise in either heat pump technology or hybrid technology. This has been the most recent welcome to the acknowledgement of the government that hybrids will play a part in our progression towards net zero.

SPECIAL REPORT 10 JULY/AUGUST2023 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Services at Worcester Bosch, discusses the latest government investments in heat pump technology as we work towards Net Zero by 2050.

BOOST PERFORMANCE LEVELS

No matter the size of the household or the number of outlets running in the kitchen or bathroom, good water pressure and flow is a must have for homeowners. A UK manufacturer of water boosting solutions, Salamander Pumps, has recently launched TankBoost, a single unit solution to ensure water performance remains at optimum levels – designed for homeowners seeking to use multiple outlets across multiple floors, all at the same time.

Here, the Training Manager at Salamander Pumps, Mike Oxley, provides a step-by-step guide on how to install TankBoost in a home suffering with poor water performance.

Salamander Pumps runs through the installation process for its TankBoost, a single unit solution to ensure water performance remains at optimum levels. 1

Step-by-step

1 I Determine the location

Ensure TankBoost is installed in a location that is protected from frost, and both the pump and the power supply should be installed indoors. You must also check that the stored volume of water remains above 4°C and below 20°C to avoid bacterial growth and to protect the unit from frost. It is also important that TankBoost is located on a level surface, which can support the weight on the unit when full. To ensure the unit cannot tip, the unit should be fixed to a suitable supporting wall. A potable tap should be drawn off before the feed into the TankBoost. TankBoost is compatible in homes with a combination boiler or unvented cylinder. Always consult the manufacturers literature to ensure the suitable installation.

2 I Unboxing TankBoost

Once a suitable location is identified, begin by unboxing TankBoost and take time to read the enclosed literature. The installation guide will detail all things to be considered when installing the product and should always be your first port of call, even for the more experienced

installers. Complete all hot work (e.g. pipework soldering) prior to introducing the TankBoost unit to the installation. Never fit to hot water pipework and solder flux should not come into contact with any part of TankBoost, the power supply unit or its power cables. Before connecting TankBoost, the pipework should be fully flushed to ensure that no residue, solder flux or debris gets into the TankBoost unit.

SPECIAL REPORT
2

3 I Connect TankBoost

Turn off the incoming mains water supply and drain the system. Once drained, make a provision for the cold mains to be taken to the TankBoost. In line with good plumbing practice and water regulations, ensure that a double check valve has been fitted directly after the mains stop tap to the house.

TankBoost must be connected to the electrical supply using the mains cable, wired to a UK 3-pin plug or fused spur (with a fuse no greater than 5A). The supply cord should be cut down to a suitable length to avoid excess cable. Any excess cable must not be coiled. If the unit is to be installed in a loft, garage, outbuilding or other location where there is a risk of water ingress or condensation to the connection, an appropriately IP rated socket must be used.

4 I Commission TankBoost

Once inlet pipework is connected to the unit, open all isolating valves (except mains bypass valve which should be closed).

28mm pipework is recommended from the outlet of the unit to allow maximum flow rate. Smaller diameter pipes may result in reduced flow rates. All pipework to and from the TankBoost unit should be supported with pipe clips. If the supply is known to be lime/calcium (hard) water, fit extra filtration before the unit. Always consult filter manufacturer’s literature for correct installation.

Turn mains water on at the stop tap to fully fill the tank and system with water (the inlet flow will stop when shut off by the float valve). Next, check there is at least 25mm gap between the level of the water when full and where the water exits the inlet valve. Adjust the float position if necessary to ensure at least 25mm between the water level when full and where the water exits the inlet valve. Then inspect inlet pipework connected to the unit for leaks.

Finally open all the water outlets BEFORE electrically switching the pump on, as it is important to ensure all air can be discharged through the system. Switch on electrical supply to TankBoost and press the power button on the control unit, the pump will automatically begin boosting water to the outlets.

Final steps

Close all the outlets and check that the pump turns off. This could take a few seconds while the system repressurises. Always complete your installation by checking for leaks while the system is pressurised.

PARTL – INSTALLERAWARENESS

Almost half (48%) of heating installers admit that they are not aware of the updates to Part L of the Building Regulations and over a third (35%) said that they do not keep up to date with changes to regulations, according to the research from Polypipe Building Products. This comes as the transitionary period to comply with the new Part L, which covers the energy performance of new and existing buildings, draws to a close. From 15th June 2023, all projects need to adhere to the new regulations, which means that it is essential for installers to gain an understanding of the legislation and how it will impact their work.

Lack of clarity

The survey of 150 heating installers also revealed that over a quarter (27%) don’t understand the building regulations at all and 30% of installers feel that while they have tried to gain an understanding of the updates, the building regulations are not clear.

The research highlighted that there is also confusion amongst installers when it comes to which projects the updates will affect. Of those surveyed, 37% think that

because they work on existing dwellings, the legislation won’t affect them, and one in four installers (23%) said that they are not aware of whether the building regulations affect new builds.

When respondents were asked if they have read and understood the regulations, over a third (36%) said that they have read Part L of the building regulations but don’t understand how it will affect their work. Conversely, 23% of installers admitted that while know that the regulations might affect them, they haven’t read the approved document.

Major impact

Dan Love, Head of Commercial at Polypipe Building Products, commented: “The updated regulations will undoubtedly have a major impact on all domestic heating installers no matter whether they work on new builds or existing homes, which is why it is critical for installers to familiarise themselves with the updates. Otherwise, they are putting themselves at risk of hefty fines and serious penalties.”

Dan continued: “While our research found that awareness is generally lower than we’d like, it is promising that younger

30%

an end, all installers need to ensure they fully understand the regulations and it is important that they know that the industry is here to help them if they need it.

He concluded: “At Polypipe Building Products, we’ve been working alongside installers throughout the year to support them through the regulation updates. So, if installers are unsure about the requirements for a project, or are struggling to design a low-temperature system, they should reach out to the manufacturer to discuss available solutions that will help them to ensure compliance.”

‘O NCEINALIFETIME’ OPPORTUNITY...

Ayoung entrepreneur from Kettering has been crowned the winner of what could be a life changing competition, that will provide him with the skills and business support to become a success in the building services engineering (BSE) trades.

The prize, awarded by Logic4training, gives 19-year-old Josh Scott ten years’ worth of training, plus added extras such as a website and 12 months’ Checkatrade membership.

Josh was chosen as the winner of Logic4training’s Lifetime of Training competition thanks to his drive and commitment, demonstrated through a series of rounds, including a video and face to face interview. He impressed the judges - Logic4trainng’s owner, Kevin Budd and Director, Mark Krull - with his ambition and self-motivation. Josh had recently set-up his own tiling business and has been working for his Dad (Jay Scott) in fire and flood restoration.

Clear goal

In the future, Josh would like to run his own company. He also hopes to show the younger generation the rewarding, lucrative and future-proof career opportunities presented by the BSE sector.

Josh said: “I am so excited to have won. I couldn’t believe it when I got the call. My whole family is in the trades - Dad is a multi-skilled plumbing, heating and electrical technical manager for Belfor and my brother, Ryan is a trained gas installer.

“I started working on building sites after moving away from a career in the army. I went to military college straight after school, but Covid meant the course was paused and during that time I decided it wasn’t for me.

“After working with Dad for a bit I got the bug, took myself on a tiling course and then started up my own business. When I saw Logic4training’s competition on Instagram I knew I had to enter – it really is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I’m going

to start with plumbing and heating, but I’m up for being multi-skilled like my Dad. I’d like to add electrics and heat pumps too.”

Career catapult

The prize has a total value of over £18k and starts with a new entrants’ programme, which culminates in a Level 2 Plumbing NVQ Diploma and Gas ACS. From there, Josh will receive £1,000 of training vouchers a year for ten years, which he can use for himself, or, if and when he becomes an employer, to upskill staff.

This career catapulting opportunity is about more than practical skill, however,

OPTIONS FOR HOME HEATING

With energy prices remaining high, installers are likely to be faced with more questions over the best option for domestic heating. While the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a level of financial support, it is unlikely that all homes will be able to make the full switch to a heat pump. Darran Smith, Technical Manager at Alpha, offers advice on the best alternatives that customers might consider when it comes to home heating.

As temperatures start to rise and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis doesn’t show any signs of easing, many homeowners are still in discussion over high energy bills and ways to heat homes next winter. With a host of options available on the market, installers need to be equipped to offer the appropriate advice on what will work best for different customer house types and individual preferences. Whether that be the full switch to a heat pump system, an upgrade to a hybrid system, or sticking with the boiler.

A full heat pump approach

Heat pumps are very much front-and-centre of the news agenda. With the government setting a target of installing 600,000 heat pumps per year from 2028 onwards, installers on the front line of the domestic heating sector need to

assist on helping to deliver on this tough objective. New build homes are being designed with heat pumps specified from the outset. Owing to this, you’re likely to find more and more customers asking about them –but many existing homes are not suitable for a full heat pump installation. Insulation is one critical prerequisite here. For retrofits, it’s necessary to establish if the home is sufficiently

insulated as a typical heat pump system runs at a lower recommended temperature of between 35°C to 55°C. Carrying out a heat loss survey will help you to advise the customer on whether a heat pump is suitable for the home.

Another consideration is whether the homeowner will be required to upgrade their radiators. Replacing older radiators with new, larger and more effective models will ensure the system operates efficiently – but this may not be a feasible investment for some at this time.

Finally, an air-source heat pump of course does come with an outdoor unit which is generally around 1m x 1m x 330mm. Your customer may not appreciate the sizing of this or where it will need to be sited; however, you can help explain this and advise them on the appropriate placement.

For those interested in heat pump technology but not ready to make the full switch, a hybrid system might be the best option

A step into renewables

For those interested in heat pump technology but not ready to make the full switch, a hybrid system might be the best option to advise them on. Alpha’s E-Tec Hybrid offers a pathway into renewable heating whilst still having a gas boiler for backup in lower temperatures. The gas boiler is connected to an external heat pump unit which cleverly combines live energy prices and outdoor temperatures to work out the best way to heat the home. Hot water is also always available and provided instantly by the gas boiler. Customers can free up airing cupboard space, as hot water storage isn’t needed and it is compatible with existing pipework, thus negating the large outlay that might put consumers off the full heat pump switch.

The domestic boiler

Making a big switch and change of system may be daunting or simply not practical for some homeowners. As such, many will want to stick with what they know with a combi boiler. All new Alpha boilers are hydrogen-blend ready, with the government even trialling a small amount (20%) of hydrogen in the gas system last year –which was found to reduce gas emissions by 7%. This means that homeowners buying another gas boiler can still enjoy the benefits of a new boiler for now.

For customers looking for a highly efficient gas boiler, Alpha’s E-Tec Plus combi boiler can modulate down as low as 4.3kW and incorporates a Delta T controlled pump which can be used to maintain a low return temperature, essential for keeping the boiler in condensing mode. As with all

TRAINING

Alpha offers training with in-house specialists on air source heat pumps, hybrids and domestic boilers, covering system design, key features and what considerations need to be taken when fitting the chosen product, as well as hands-on positioning and installation training with the product. our boiler models, the E-Tec Plus is also 20% hydrogen blend-ready and will therefore be able to run for its lifetime, even when hydrogen begins to be phased into the gas grid.

We all need to embrace zero carbon heating as soon as we possibly can. However, the tried-and-trusted gas boiler will be part of the UK’s homes for some years yet. We need to make sure we keep all doors open for domestic customers until such a time as everyone is able to transition to green energy.

A variety of accessories

Many customers will be content with the boiler they have and this is where advice surrounding accessories and small upgrades can prove useful. For example, our Weather Compensation Probe is designed specifically to work alongside our E-Tec boilers. When paired with the Alpha Climatic digital time and temperature programmer, the probe precisely monitors the inside and outside temperature to maximise the efficiency and comfort of a home heating system.

Smaller enhancements such as this can really make a difference to the cost and efficiency of how a customer’s heating system runs and therefore shouldn’t be overlooked when attempting to offer solutions. Many will be reluctant to make a big switch but can still see benefits from the addition of different accessories.

THE HOT TOPIC

In the face of uncertain gas and electric prices, heating homes economically is vital. However, while some customers will want to head straight to a smart control, there are many that will require something effective in terms of cost and functionality.

Having a thermostat in the van that can be used across a variety of installs and updates can prove invaluable. Developed using feedback from installers and customers regarding what appeals most to them, the new Honeywell Home DT4 thermostat from Resideo has been designed to offer the efficiency customers need while ticking the box on aesthetics and functionality.

An easy upgrade

An important aspect for customers looking to have more control over their heating appliances is that their chosen thermostat fits easily into their home’s current heating system. A thermostat that can be installed standalone or as part of an existing system, such as conventional and combi boilers, and newer heating systems such as heat pumps is ideal. Customers also commented that their ideal thermostat would also be compatible with heating and cooling systems - such as zoning and underfloor heating and cooling.

A thermostat that suited a customer’s

home and lifestyle was also rated as important, so installers also need to consider having a thermostat that is convenient for each individual customer.

For instance, Resideo’s latest solution, the DT4 Room Thermostat takes the simplicity and reliability of the mechanical room thermostats of the 1970s and combines it with modern sleek design and engineering of today. Not only can it be integrated into a range of both newer and older common style heating systems, it and can either be wireless or wired, allowing it preferred, or portable around the house.

choosing the right thermostat for them, it’s important to consider the level of control they want to heating system.

Customers that are familiar with technology may be keen to upgrade to an advanced smart control with zoning capabilities, as this provides them with full control over the heating in each room. Other customers may prefer minimal involvement in the ongoing control of their heating system – preferring a thermostat that they can simply programme and trust to work effectively.

Giving versatility, the DT4, for example, can be used as a standalone option.

However, for those wanting to add zoning options to their underfloor heating, the DT4 is the ideal partner for Resideo’s new HCC100 multi-zone underfloor heating system, providing temperature control for individual rooms. It can even be used alongside smart thermostats such as the Honeywell Home evohome to provide further zoning capabilities for heat pump or boiler systems.

With ease of use built in, the DT4 can also help consumers improve the energy efficiency in their homes through its eco state functionality, which reduces or boosts temperature for a period of time.

having a screen that is easy to read and buttons that aren’t obtrusive, yet easy to access, is vital

Visually fitting

Aesthetics are always a big factor for those choosing products that will be on display in their home. The majority of customers we surveyed prefer a thermostat that is white; this is due to it being able to fit into any home décor smartly and subtly.

A slim, sleek, and classic design is one that will impress all customers and will fit into many different homes. On top of this, however, having a screen that is easy to read and buttons that aren’t obtrusive, yet easy to access, is vital.

Those we surveyed preferred accessible buttons that were placed on the

bottom of the device, opposed to the side, which is why our DT4 thermostat is designed this way. It also has coloured icons that give a clear indication of the thermostat’s status – allowing it to be easy to read yet remain visually appealing.

Nearly four out of five UK consumers (78%) recently told Resideo that they would spend money on the latest heating controls if it meant they could save money over the longer term. When asked who they would seek advice from when looking to invest in energy efficient products, one in five said they would ask a heating professional.

LAYER UP LAYER LAYER

PHPI caught up with Matt Densham, Sales Director at Fränkische UK, to find out more about the benefits of Multilayer Composite Pipe (MLCP).

QIn case some installers have not come across Multilayer Composite Pipe (MLCP) before, please can you explain what it is?

Like any composite material, Multilayer composite pipes (MLCP) are a type of piping system consisting of multiple layers of different materials that are combined to take advantage of the unique properties of each layer.

Typically, the innermost layer of MLCP is made of cross-linked polyethylene (PEX), which provides excellent resistance to corrosion and chemical reactions. This layer is surrounded by an aluminium layer that offers strength, rigidity, and barrier properties. The outermost layer is usually a protective coating or another layer of PEX for additional durability.

The combination of materials in MLCP provides several benefits. The aluminium

layer makes the pipes more resistant to temperature and pressure fluctuations, reducing the risk of deformation or bursting. The inner PEX layer ensures excellent water or fluid quality and minimizes the risk of corrosion. MLCP is lightweight, flexible, and easy to install, making it a popular choice in many construction and plumbing projects.

QWhat are typical applications for MLCP?

Multilayer composite pipes find applications in various industries and systems. Some typical applications include:

● Plumbing Systems: MLCP is commonly used in residential and commercial plumbing systems for supplying potable

water. Its flexibility and ease of installation make it suitable for both new constructions and retrofit projects.

● Heating and Cooling Systems: MLCP is suitable for both hydronic heating and cooling systems. It can efficiently transport hot water, chilled water, and glycol-based solutions, whilst the aluminium barrier ensures 100% oxygen tightness.

● Underfloor Heating: MLCP is often used in underfloor heating systems due to its flexibility and resistance to temperature variations. It helps provide comfortable and efficient heating for residential and commercial buildings. Its low thermal linear expansion helps reduce noise, especially in panel systems.

DOMESTIC
HEATING

QDoes MLCP have any thermal expansion?

MLCP has very similar thermal expansion as copper pipes. During temperature changes, pipes will expand or contract due to thermal variations. The aluminium layer in MLCP helps to mitigate the overall expansion by providing rigidity and stability, while the PEX layer allows for flexibility. This combination helps minimise the effects of thermal expansion and contraction.

MLCP manufacturers typically provide guidelines and recommendations for handling thermal expansion in their installation instructions.

QIs the alpex MLCP from Fränkische 100% impermeable to oxygen and why is this important?

Fränkische’s alpex MLCP has an aluminium layer sandwiched between two layers of cross-linked polyethylene (PEX). The aluminium layer in MLCP acts as an oxygen barrier, even at very high temperatures, significantly reducing the oxygen permeation rate compared to traditional plastic pipes. The impermeability to oxygen is important in certain applications, especially those involving hydronic heating and cooling systems. Oxygen can cause corrosion and degrade the performance of metal components such as boilers, pumps, and radiators. By minimising oxygen permeation, MLCP helps protect these system components and ensures their longevity and efficient operation.

Oxygen diffusion into the system can lead to the formation of rust, sludge, or scale, which can clog pipes, reduce heat transfer efficiency, and increase maintenance requirements. MLCP's ability to limit oxygen ingress helps maintain water quality, minimize system downtime, and reduce the risk of damage or malfunctions.

QWhat fittings can be used with this pipe – would an installer need to invest in new tools?

MLCP typically use specific fittings that are designed and approved for use with MLCP systems. These fittings ensure proper connections, reliability, and compatibility with the multilayer composite pipe material. Some common types of fittings used with MLCP include:

● Compression Fittings: Compression fittings are commonly used with MLCP systems. They consist of a compression nut and a ferrule that create a tight seal by compressing the pipe onto the fitting. Compression fittings provide a secure and leak-free connection and can be easily disassembled if needed.

● Press Fittings: Press fittings, also known as crimp fittings, are another popular choice for MLCP systems. These fittings employ a mechanical or hydraulic press tool to create a secure connection between the pipe and fitting. Press fittings offer quick and reliable installation, and they eliminate the need for soldering or welding.

● Push Fittings: Push fittings are very popular in the UK and can also be used with MLCP. They are generally used to complement press-fittings when access is too tight for a press gun.

QWhat sizes are available?

MLC pipes were developed to match the internal bores of metal pipes and as such, have slightly larger outside diameters. For example, 16mm is equivalent to 15mm and 32mm is equivalent to 28mm. The Fränkische range runs from 16mm all the way up to 75mm (equivalent to 67mm copper). 20mm is a very popular MLCP size as it replicates 18mm copper which we don’t use in the UK anymore. However, this size is perfect for the majority of bathroom installations where traditionally, installers would have to go up to 22mm from 15mm.

QIs further guidance available from Fränkische on how to install MLCP?

Installation is quick and easy. Thanks to the recessed o-rings in our alpex F50 fittings, calibration is no longer required. They are installed in three simple steps:

Cut the pipe to length with a pipe cutter to ensure a cut at a right angle.

Insert the fitting onto the pipe ensuring the pipe is fully inserted via the very large inspection windows

Press the pipe and fitting with a pressing tool. Our alpex F50 fittings can be pressed using 5 x different jaw contours (F – U – TH – H – VP).

Due to Fränkische’s leak before press function, any accidentally un-pressed joints will show up during a pressure test of the system.

FUNCTION, operation AND DESIGN

With smart heating controls becoming one of the more recognisable elements of a heating system in recent years, PHPI spoke with Ben Mackrill – National Sales Manager – Plumbing, Heating & Builders Merchants, Sangamo at ESP, about the importance of selecting products that deliver on all levels.

QWith all homeowners looking to minimise energy costs, how can modern controls help get the best energy efficiency possible from a domestic heating system?

Modern controls include features which reduce the amount of time a boiler is firing, which in turn will lead to reduced energy usage and therefore result in reduced costs. Having the heating on when the property is vacant or having no control over the set point temperature will result in an inefficient system. Features such as 7-day scheduling and thermostat control ensure that the boiler is firing when the property is most likely to be occupied and does not exceed the desired temperature.

In essence modern heating controls offer automation to a heating system and work to avoid energy wastage by setting a logical pattern of heating. This is in comparison to relying on an end user to manually control the system, which can be very time consuming and costly if the end user forgets to switch the heating off. There are advanced features available such as optimum start/stop which analyses the warm up and cool down periods of the heating system. Due to this analysis the firing time of the boiler is reduced, thus saving energy. In addition, the feature ensures that the set temperature is reached by the system at the programmed time thus preventing the need for the user to change the set point temperature which accelerates the firing of the boiler and leads to energy wastage.

QWith technology continually evolving, what benefits do the latest smart controls provide?

Smart controls allow an end user to have full access to the operation of the control remotely via an APP platform, which allows for settings and different modes to be adjusted remotely. This is particularly useful if there is a sudden change in the weather

or in the user’s routine when settings can be modified accordingly.

An APP platform also provides the user with historic heating patterns and a current live view of the heating system status. This provides an understanding of which times of the day the boiler is firing and thus enables a user to analyse and fine tune the programming of the heating control leading to a more efficient system.

One of the most noted advances in recent years is the popularity of Voice Control through virtual assistance. For convenience, or for users with restricted mobility, voice activated features enable a user to verbally change the set temperature or programming to assist with heating comfort. In addition, smart features such as open window/ door detection will cancel a boiler firing until the temperature stabilises or other conditions are met. Smart controls that are linked together via an APP can also provide a whole host of automation processes with other smart devices in the property.

QHow important are the aesthetics of smart heating controls?

Due to the popularity of smart phones and APPs, smart heating controls have become a popular consumer product in recent years. Market data shows that there is a high demand for smart heating controls and this is a sector in which consumers are willing to invest. Function, operation and design are essential elements to be considered when it comes to the development and creation of desirable product solutions.

As well as general demand from consumers, there is an increasing requirement for design conscious heating controls for more commercial projects such as new build and refurbishment projects. It is commonplace today to have a choice of wiring accessories and furniture and there is no reason

DOMESTIC HEATING
24 JULY/AUGUST2023 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

why heating controls shouldn’t follow suit. Where once heating controls were considered a very functional product area, we are now seeing a trend towards more aesthetically designed solutions.

Smart technology in general has seen a massive increase in demand and the expectation of modern, high-end, vanguard technology is for the product to be designed and packaged in a complementary manner.

QWhere circumstances do not call for the latest ‘smart’ solutions, does Sangamo offer more traditional solutions? What options are available?

Circumstances that do not call for smart solutions can be dictated by the user or installation requirements and sometimes the restrictions of the installation itself (for example no Wi-Fi).

For minimal functionality and simple control, Sangamo offers basic room thermostats with a single control dial to make operation as straight forward as possible. The thermostats are based on

traditional controls but have a contemporary design available in three different colours – black, white and silver – to suit many interiors.

For some applications the Powersaver range offers a single ‘Boost’ button which activates the heating at pre-set times such as 30 mins, 1 or 2 hour periods. This ensures the user does not forget or need to manually readjust the control to switch the heating off.

For large commercial applications, Sangamo’s ‘Round Pattern Timer Switches’ have been manufactured in the UK since the 1960’s and are renowned for the large clock face, simple set up, and high switching load, which combine to ensures hassle free operation and servicing for years to come.

QHow does the design of Sangamo’s products make the installer’s job easier?

Firstly, the Sangamo range has been developed and designed to cover the vast majority of applications. Therefore, whether

a basic heating control or a more complex solution is required, Sangamo’s product portfolio will have a range of options to consider. By making Sangamo their number one choice, installers will have no need to shop around at different outlets, they can find all their solutions under one roof.

Through Sangamo’s extensive experience in the market, we strive to make things simple for the installer by offering a wide variety of products, making the programming steps as clear and logical as possible for set up, and finally the user controls have been made hassle-free meaning the end user will be self-sufficient. As well as an extensive range of products to call upon, installers can also take advantage of Sangamo’s dedicated UK technical support team, with highly experienced members available for pre and after sales support.

HOW TO... ...install the Altecnic iStop Anti-FreezeValve

To stop a heat pump from freezing an ‘Anti-Freeze Valve’ can be fitted. Altecnic walks through how to do it.

As heat pumps use a refrigerant to absorb the heat from the air, ground, or water, they have a risk of freezing. This is particularly so when installed in places that are exposed to the elements and fluctuations in temperature. Should freezing occur, not only would any repair be costly, it could cause further issues for the heating system and reducing its efficiency. Fitting an ‘Anti-Freeze Valve’ is a method of preventing a heat pump from freezing. GOING THE EXTRA ( H yper) mile

As we exit Q1 2023, petrol and diesel prices are showing no signs of falling significantly anytime soon, posing a challenge for fleet business owners trying to maintain a profitable operation. Luckily, an increasingly popular trend is just around the corner, and one that could help alleviate the financial burden: hypermiling.

A series of practices and techniques used by drivers to help maximise fuel efficiency, hypermiling might just help fleet business owners to make significant cost savings and improve their bottom line.

By training their drivers on hypermiling techniques, fleet owners can reduce fuel consumption, lower maintenance costs, extend the lifespan of their vehicles, and stay competitive in their industry.

Here are some hypermiling tips that could make the difference in the long run.

The need for reduced speed

Why drive at 70mph when 60 will do just fine? The first and most obvious tip is to ease off the accelerator – in fact, excessive speeding may well be the biggest drain on fuel. Ensuring acceleration is gentle is key to fuel-efficient vehicle usage and will also make for a smoother ride. Always try driving in the highest possible gear while remaining well within the speed limit.

Feel the pressure

Driving with underinflated tyres is one of the easiest ways to waste fuel. Friction is increased whenever a vehicle’s tyres are low, forcing the engine to work harder and therefore consume more fuel. So check for the correct tyre pressure in the car manual and make sure to stop by the inflator during the next trip to the petrol station.

Remove excess baggage

Any extra weight the vehicle is carrying will affect fuel efficiency, so it’s probably time to declutter. Remove that rack on top of the vehicle if it’s not needed, as it will only create wind resistance.

The heat is on

Not one drivers will want to hear on a hot summer’s day, but minimising the use of air-conditioning is crucial to ensure good hypermiling practice. In fact, air-conditioning is capable of increasing fuel usage by as much as 10%. But before winding down the window instead, think again – an open window can cause wind drag, which will also affect fuel economy.

usage and a good place to start is to avoid the need to reverse. If we approach it strictly from a mileage consumption standpoint, backing up and pulling forward amounts to twice the driving of just pulling out of a parking space and driving off. So where possible, it’s best to park somewhere we can easily pull out of facing forward. On top of that, low gears make the worst use of fuel – another reason for avoiding needless reversing manoeuvres.

While hypermiling can certainly help save money in the long run, it’s always important to put the above tips into practice with both care and caution. After all, no amount of money saved on fuel can make up for the

Brake down

Slamming the brakes equates to poor fuel economy. Instead, try anticipating the road ahead by adjusting speed and coasting into a smoother, gradual halt. It will make for better hypermiling and passengers will be grateful for a more pleasant ride.

Time to switch off

The most ardent hypermilers will always try to minimise stops of any kind, but sometimes we all need to switch off – literally. Whenever waiting at a rail crossing or stuck in traffic, cutting off the engine will save fuel.

The reverse effect

Even the way we park can affect our fuel

expense – both financial and physical – of any damage or personal injury sustained while hypermiling.

Which brings us to our last cost-saving tip: business fuel cards. Any fleet business or company with a degree of travel-associated costs should consider fuel cards. Fuel cards such as fuelGenie and fuelGenie+ allow drivers to access some of the UK’s lowest fuel prices through supermarkets such as Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s, providing a dramatic increase in convenience, minimising route deviation and saving time as well as money.

A CUT ABOVE

PHPI checks out the new Knipex tool designed to save time and effort for installers when cutting composite and plastic pipes.

Sometimes it is worth considering how much time and effort jobs like pipe cutting take for heating and plumbing installers. One manufacturer who has thought about it is Knipex. Last year we looked at the TubiX XL (which cuts pipes from 6 to 76mm and a wall thickness up to 2mm) and the DP50 (which cuts larger plastic pipes with diameters of 32, 40 and 50mm).

For 2023, the company has added to this range with the launch of its Pipe Cutter for Composite and Plastic Pipes which it says is an intelligent and energy saving addition to its range and has been designed to cut pipes with diameters up to 26mm.

Cutting wheel

The tool has a freely rotating cutting wheel that allows the pipe to be rotated with little friction when cutting and requires less effort. The rotary movement has been designed to enable an optimal cutting result with minimised deformation of the pipe. The company believes the tool reduces the effort required to cut pipe by up to 60%.

Knipex’s guide on how it works...

www.rdr.link/pav018

If the pipe is already installed or if pipe is processed from the roll, the pipe shears are swivelled around the pipe when cutting. The rotary/swivelling movement during cutting reduces the required pressure, minimising deformation of the composite pipe. Wide plastic supports mounted opposite the cutting wheel allow right-angled cuts.

1 2 3

1 I The rotating cutting wheel allows the pipe to be rotated in the pipe cutter with little friction, or, vice versa, the pipe cutter can be rotated around the pipe. The pipe cutter cuts all common composite and plastic conduit pipes with diameters of up to 26 millimetres. Its robust construction means it is also suitable for composite pipes with increased aluminium layer thickness. The replaceable cutting wheel is made

of a special grade of chrome vanadium electric steel and is oil-hardened.

2 I With the rotary movement the pipe can also be cut with little pressure, minimising deformation. The tool is equipped with ergonomic multi-component grips. A locking mechanism ensures it can be safely

transported. A replacement cutting wheel is also available.

3 I Wide plastic supports allow perfect right-angled cuts. The pipe sits on the plastic support.

THE INSTALLER’S INFLUENCE ON PROTECTING UK WATER SUPPLY

Recently, a study that made national news found that by 2030, seven regions in the UK could suffer with water stress – which occurs when water demand is too great against available supply. Unless corrective measures are taken, by 2040, 12 regions will be in a state of water stress. Without serious action now, in fewer than seven years, we will face the terrifying situation where people across the country will struggle to access clean water. There will likely be times that installers will have opportunities to discuss water use with their customers and it’s important that they use these chances to help the public better understand the issue and what needs to be done. When those opportunities arise, here are a few ways to advise clients.

Water saving behaviour

The way many of us use water is inefficient. This is likely due to the fact that much of the population has enjoyed virtually unlimited access to clean water in their homes for their entire lives. Therefore, changing this behaviour can be difficult. If your client seems happy to chat about how to save water, you might want to recommend a few small changes to how they use it.

Encouraging customers to take shorter showers and turn off taps while brushing teeth or shaving can save hundreds of litres of water over a year. A family of two adults who shower once every day could save around 8,500 litres per year by reducing their shower time by three minutes each.

Water saving products

Another way to save in the shower is by using a flow restrictor. These can be applied to shower heads as well as bathroom and kitchen taps. Most kitchen sinks are filled with a flow rate of about six litres per minute which means that, if someone leaves the tap running for 20 seconds, two litres of water are gone. By encouraging customers to get flow restrictors installed, you could help them save hundreds of litres of water each year without them having to change their habits at all.

to significant water savings. Many water companies have free or subsidised water saving products available.

By informing yourself of the options out there, you'll not only be doing your part to for the planet but also demonstrating your professionalism and competence and strengthening clients' trust. What’s more is that those who are on a metered supply will save money – this is often a more powerful motivator than any environmental concern, especially now, so is always worth mentioning.

Water saving services

If a customer is considering having entirely new taps or showerheads installed, encourage them to choose replacements that are recognised by the Unified Water Label Association (UWLA) which recommends water efficient products on its website. Similarly, cistern bags can help save up to 1.2 litres per flush which – depending on how many people live in the house, whether they work from home during the day, and a few other factors – can add up

When you are in a customer’s home, keep an eye out for any issues that may be causing water waste. If a tap has a slow drip, offer to repair it. Let them know that slow leaks account for a huge amount of wasted water and often take very little time to fix. Outside taps are often entirely overlooked in this regard as they are usually out of sight for most of the time, so request that you take a look and see if any work is needed there too.

We can see from the number of recent news stories that there is real public angst about the state of water supply in the UK. While changes need to be made from an infrastructure point of view, that is no reason for us to simply shrug our shoulders and say that this is someone else’s problem to fix. All of us can drive change.

WISEMAN LAUNCHES CORROSION INHIBITOR TEST STRIP & APP

Wiseman has introduced the EVERAD Rapid Inhibitor Test Strip, allowing heating engineers to check the level of EVERAD Corrosion inhibitor in the system and cross reference with the supplied scientific colour map to ensure it is at the correct level to provide system protection.

By downloading the EVERAD Rapid Inhibitor Test app from Apple Store or Google Play, the test strip results can then be recorded with an immediately generated email-able Pass/Fail test certificate for the customers. The company says this is a secure way for heating engineers to capture customers’ details, results, job notes and provide an annual revisit reminder date.

Harvey Wiseman, CEO & Managing Director Wiseman Industries Ltd said: “With Building Regulations Part L BS7593, Heating Engineers want a quick way to test for corrosion inhibitor levels and customers want a results certificate that shows their heating system has been treated. The launch of both the Rapid Inhibitor Test Strip and the supporting Rapid Inhibitor Test app is the perfect combination, which ensures the right level of EVERAD Corrosion Inhibitor is in the system. This gives customers’ peace of mind knowing it has been tested and treated and the heating engineers a practical and secure way of generating a test result certificate for the customer.”

He continued: “An additional benefit of the app is that other EVERAD water treatments, including Descaler, Cleanser, System Silencer, Leak Sealer and THERMOBOOST can be noted on the same certificate if a heating engineer has used additional water treatments.”

OMNIE INTRODUCES AL HEXHEATDIFFUSER FOR UFH

Underfloor heating specialist, Omnie, will be incorporating the advanced AL HEX aluminium diffuser technology on all its foiled underfloor heating systems, as standard, with immediate effect. The patented AL HEX foil, with its trademark hexagonal pattern, increases the in-channel foiled surface area that is in contact with the warm water pipe.

The company says that the result is greater heat output, faster heat transfer and a more even heat distribution across a floor area, plus it avoids the risk of damage due to heat ‘striping’.

Striping is caused when heat in the warm water pipe doesn’t diffuse into the floor panel effectively and, instead, creates hot spots and hot lines on the floor surface finish. Prolonged exposure to striping can damage both the floor finish and the subfloor.

“AL HEX is a real step forward for underfloor heating particularly when the industry is moving away from gas boilers and towards renewable heat sources,” said Brendan Hourican, OMNIE’s Managing Director. “Because it is so efficient at transferring heat, AL HEX works very well with lower water temperatures. This means it improves the performance of the underfloor heating, which is a huge benefit when the system is paired with a heat pump. Right now, homeowners want efficient heating. They want to feel the benefit of every kilowatt of energy they are paying for, to lower the cost of their heating and still stay warm in winter. AL HEX diffuser foil fitted to their underfloor heating panels will help them achieve this.”

ALTECNIC LAUNCHES NEW DRYTRAP TUNDISH

Altecnic has launched a new Dry Trap Tundish. The new Tundish boasts a patented, anti-splash design with a transparent chamber that provides a visual indicator for discharge. It is fully compliant with G3 building regulations.

Suited for installation with domestic central heating boilers, heat interface units (HIU), and hot water cylinders, the Altecnic Dry Trap Tundish has been designed for the hot water discharge from pressure and temperature relief valves to pass safely. The Dry Trap Tundish allows system discharge to be piped directly into a drainpipe.

The Altecnic Dry Trap Tundish has a compact design and prevents the need to install both a tundish and a dry trap as the internal stainless-steel spring-loaded disc mechanism prevents odours from escaping. The stainless-steel spring exerts only a small force to close the valve, therefore only a small weight of water is required to open the valve. As such the greater the flow of water the more the valve will open, acting as a visual fault indicator.

The dry trap tundish has a transparent chamber to provide a clear indicator for discharge. The compact size makes it suitable for domestic installations, where space saving is essential.

The Altecnic Dry Trap Tundish is KIWA Reg4, WRAS approved, G3 and EN1717 compliant and comes with a 5-year warranty. It comes in 15mm x 22mm connections supplied with compression ends, complying with BS EN 1252-2 for use with R250 (half hard) copper tube.

CAPTURE MAGNETIC DEBRISWITH RADMAG

Designed in the UK, RADMAG from Navigator MSL, provides a way of installing magnetic protection in a heating system without breaking into existing pipework.

Fitted into most towel rail type radiators, the unit contains a high-powered magnet array that can be extended to optimise the ferrite capture area for magnetic metal debris circulating in the heating system. This can be removed periodically for inspection –typically every year when the boiler is serviced – wiped clean and re-inserted to continue the removal of harmful ferrous particles in the system.

RadMag’s inventor, Mark Norris, said: “RadMag is the easiest way to add magnetic filtration to any wet heating system that has standard towel rails or designer radiators.

"When coming up with the idea for RadMag, I recognised that manufacturers fit heating elements to them so why not a removable magnetic filter? A lot of heating engineers use the towel warmer to dose a system with cleaner or inhibitor so why not also use it to fit a filter too.”

Andrew Smith, Navigator MD said: “This is a simple but highly effective way of removing unwanted ferrous debris from a heating system. It’s a low-cost solution that improves the efficiency of the system, is simple and quick to install and equally easy to clean and maintain. Even the packaging is plastic free and fully recyclable.”

PB PLUMBER Life of a jobbing plumber #106

In this episode PB tackles a bathroom retrofit, not a usual job for him, replacing a walk-in shower with a bath. There are some handy tips on removing the sliding doors and cubicle panels, along with the shower tray and waste. He then runs through how he re-routed the pipework and fitted the new shower, bath and screen. There are also some tips on sealing.

Later in the video PB also takes a look at the new Velocity Pro Gear Grab Bag 1.0 - a smaller bag with a hard base, a lot of variation of vertical tool storage both front and back and top pockets to keep smaller items handy. Among the storage options there is also a pocket on the front and side for things like knives and tapes. He also runs through the latest light from Unilite, the MTB 5300 lumen light, which includes a number of battery adapters that allow the unit to be powered from batteries from different tool brands.

KNIPEX Pipe Cutter

For 2023, KNIPEX has added to it its pipe cutting range with the launch of its Pipe Cutter for Composite and Plastic Pipes which cuts pipes with diameters up to 26mm. The tool has a freely rotating cutting wheel that allows the pipe to be rotated with little friction when cutting and requires less effort. The rotary movement is designed to enable an optimal cutting result with minimised deformation of the pipe. The company says the tool reduces the effort required to cut pipe by up to 60%. If the pipe is already installed or if pipe is processed from the roll, the pipe shears are swivelled around the pipe when cutting. The rotary/swivelling movement during cutting reduces the required pressure, minimising deformation of the composite pipe. Wide plastic supports mounted opposite the cutting wheel allow for right-angled cuts.
