Juggling act The volume of information and commentary around Sustainability, Low Carbon, Net Zero and CO2 emissions is constantly growing. In every sector you can’t open a magazine, scroll through a website or check social media without a story relating to one of these topics soon appearing. And this shouldn’t be a surprise: slowing and hopefully reversing the impact our everyday lives have on our planet is a clear priority and we all have a part to play. From a heating perspective we are beginning to see some of the solutions that are emerging – such as heat pumps and heat networks to hybrid systems, HVO and hydrogen. Chances are that no one solution will become the single ‘go-to’ option for the market in the way that the boiler has been for decades. The process is not yet complete of course, trials remain underway and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme has only recently launched with the aim of encouraging the take up of heat pumps. Only the bravest of forecasters could tell you exactly where the sector will be in a decade’s time. And, of course, while trying to keep across all the potential changes to established working practices, the hectic day-to-day job of a heating and plumbing contractor remains. Operating in today’s heating sector is becoming more of a juggling act than ever. We hope to perform a similar balancing act. Keeping across the broader industry developments, while also having an eye on the day-to-day, and highlighting solutions to make every working day a little easier. In this issue we take a closer look at some of the latest tools and equipment available – including the latest pliers and pipe cutters (turn to page 24), new combi and impact drills, along with a kettle that will help you make a fresh brew on site (turn to page 26). You’ll also find some summer workwear options (page 30) and with prices at the pumps surging once again, we find out some top tips on how to keep you van driving efficiently (page 32). It is a tricky time for the heating sector. The day-to-day job needs doing, but installers must also keep one eye on the future – assessing new technologies and establishing if they are the right ones to learn more about. As always, PHPI will be around to help navigate the changing times.

News ANIMATION EXPLAINS NEW TRV REQUIREMENTS New regulations for existing homes mean that since June 15th 2022, heating installers have been required to install thermostatic room controls when replacing a boiler. To help installers the BEAMA Heating Controls group has produced a short animation to explain the change and to highlight the benefits of this work being done. The new requirement will match the current standards for new heating systems, and in most cases this requirement will be met by adding thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) to radiators. Commenting on the new tool, Remi Volpe of Schneider Electric and Chairman of BEAMA Heating Controls said: “This change to the Regulations will directly benefit householders by saving them money and should be welcomed by our industry. We know that many installers saw fitting TRVs as good practice to deliver an efficient and effective heating system, but also feared that adding them to a quotation could see them being undercut by competitors. The fact that this is now a required minimum standard will help to level the playing field, and it’s important that we get this message out as widely as possible.” For more information and to view the TRV animation please

PART L CHANGES COME INTO FORCE Changes to Part L, which came into force on 15th June 2022, mean that water quality checking, maintenance and protection will need to be carried out at every heating system install, service and repair. To help installers navigate exactly what needs to be done, leading manufacturer of water treatment solutions, ADEY, has created an at a glance check list for compliance. Neil Watson, Director of Strategy at ADEY commented: “The impact sludge-free and properly protected water can have on the running and longevity of a heating system has long been known by installers and it stands to reason that a clogged-up system won’t run as well as it should. The changes to Part L are designed to increase home heating system efficiency throughout its life, not just at installation. “British Standards was the first to switch to this view in 2019, and now, with Part L and the digital Benchmark certification in force from June 2022, we’ve got a great opportunity to help the UK’s heating systems work better for longer. It will also help keep gas bills down with heating systems that run as efficiently as possible – something that is so important to so many customers looking to make savings.” For more information and advice please

HYBRID HEAT PUMP INCENTIVES NEEDED The Heating and Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) is calling for greater support for hybrid systems in the Government’s net zero strategy, in order to provide a practical method of achieving low-carbon heating for consumers. Launched in October last year, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s (BEIS) Heat and Buildings Strategy outlined the key technologies in the UK’s transition to net zero. The £450 million Boiler Upgrade Scheme was the centrepiece of the development, offering homeowners grants of up to £6,000 for the installation of heat pumps. However, this scheme only extends to all-electric systems at present, with hybrid set-ups currently ineligible for funding. Stewart Clements, Director at the HHIC, said: “It’s important to acknowledge that transitioning directly to all-electric technology simply isn’t going to be an option for many consumers. For this reason, it’s vital that this level of support is extended to hybrid systems too as a means of bridging the gap.” The case for hybrid heating systems has been set out in the HHIC’s latest whitepaper, ‘Hybrid Heat Pumps: A Flexible Route to Decarbonise Heat’. Neil Sawers, Commercial Technical Manager at Grant UK explains why the company developed a low-loss header for heat pump installations. As a manufacturer, we are always looking at ways we can develop our products including ways to make the installation more straightforward for engineers. One such example is the Grant combined volumiser and low-loss header which we have designed for installation with the Aerona³ air source heat pump. Air source heat pumps have the potential to work incredibly efficiently and effectively. However, if they are installed incorrectly or the wider system is not set up correctly, the

New legislation will pay dividends for installers, non-domestic biomass heating owners and the environment, says HETAS. As of April 2022, updates to The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme and Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme (Amendment) Regulations 2022 will make it a legal requirement to prove biomass heating systems in non-domestic settings have been properly maintained in order to continue receiving RHI payments. Calvin May, Head of Technical Services at HETAS, said: “There are around 17,000 commercial biomass boilers and appliances that will be required to meet this new legislation. The easiest way for owners to achieve this is to have an annual service from a HETAS accredited engineer listed on the HETAS Approved Biomass Maintenance Scheme as outlined in Part 3, Regulation 40 of the updated Regulations.” The Approved Biomass Maintenance Scheme was developed to support the MCS Standard for Planned and Preventative Maintenance of Biomass Appliances (MCS 040), introduced in the summer of 2021.

affected. For example, flow rates and differentials play a significant part in helping a heat pump to work at its refrigerant to condense at a higher rate, potentially causing icing issues on the evaporator whereas too low a flow rate may mean that there is insufficient power required. The flow rate must be protected and this is why we developed the Grant combined volumiser and low-loss header. This volumiser/low-loss header creates a form of hydraulic separation which maintains the correct flow rate through the heat pump and it can also provide a suitable volume of system water that will allow the heat pump to fully modulate – installers simply need to enable their preferred set up. Essentially, this unit can maintain the flow rate/differential through the heat pump irrespective of the flow rate/differential required on the system side and it keeps the heat pump separate from the rest of the system. Simple to install, Grant’s combined volumiser/low-loss header protects the performance of the heat pump and it can also assist with diagnostics so it delivers multiple benefits throughout the heat pump’s lifespan. Vaillant has joined a new demonstration project that could pave the way for the UK’s first hydrogen village.
A
s the drive towards achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 gains momentum, a new project is set to provide valuable data to be used in the next stage of the UK Government’s hydrogen roll out – the hydrogen village. Located near a small number of homes in South Bank, Middlesbrough, H21 South Bank is currently underway – led by Northern Gas Network with support from DNV. As part of the project, Vaillant has installed its respective hydrogen boiler within a bespoke facility, purpose built to utilise the existing underground gas pipework. The Vaillant boiler was developed at its new R&D centre located within its German headquarters in Remscheid. It is the manufacturer’s first wall-mounted condensing boiler to have been adapted and certificated to operate with 100% hydrogen, according to the Gas Appliance Regulation, for installation in pilot sites in real operation mode. The hydrogen used at the site has been odourised to smell like natural gas and is undergoing numerous assessments to test the operational procedures required when using 100% hydrogen in practice, and via an existing distribution network.
Installation needs Using the data and insight collected at the South Bank site Vaillant Group will examine practicalities such as gas tightness and purging through to installation needs. The results of which will be used to inform industry regulations going forward. In addition, the demonstration will form the foundations of the next stage of the government’s commitment to rolling out a hydrogen village by 2025. The hydrogen village is expected to convert up to 2,000 occupied homes and commercial buildings with 100% hydrogen for a minimum of 12 months.
hydrogen UPDATE Speaking about the project, Mark Wilkins, Technologies and Training Director at Vaillant said: “As the need to decarbonise the way we heat our home intensifies, it’s now vital that the industry support as many projects as possible to ensure the government’s hydrogen roadmap can be successfully delivered. “With the drive towards low carbon heating for the UK’s residential and commercial buildings key in both the recently unveiled Hydrogen Strategy and Heat and Building Strategy, this latest demonstration provides valuable product data to Vaillant Group while also supporting the next milestone of the hydrogen roll out – the hydrogen village. We are therefore delighted to be playing an important role in this project and help provide valuable data and practical validation, that will guide

installation and legislation going forward.” Neil Travers, H21 Project Manager from Northern Gas Network added: “This project in South Bank will prove vital in the successful roll out of 100% hydrogen across the UK. Having a bespoke demonstration facility located in the public domain utilising odourised hydrogen is an important milestone, both for the overall roadmap, and the gas industry as a whole. Centred around the existing gas distribution network this project will provide us with real data on what’s needed to successfully convert the UK’s natural gas network to 100% hydrogen.” For more information please www.rdr.link/pah011

PRV S – A GUIDE Ed Morris, Technical Manager at Altecnic, provides a quick guide to Pressure Reducing Valves.
A
Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) is a frequently misunderstood product. The operating principle is simple enough; they reduce the incoming pressure from a mains supply or a boosted supply within a building. Their purpose is equally obvious – limiting high-pressure water that can seriously damage components in a heating and potable water system, which can lead to damage or even burst pipes and seals. It is important for an installer to understand how a PRV works, and how they can optimise them for the end-user. Here, we explore some key considerations when selecting and installing a PRV:
On what media can I use the PRVs? The PRVs are generally used on water and potable water applications. Some PRVs are also used on compressed air, natural gases and natural non-adhesive fluids. However, they should not be used on salt water, petrol or diesel.
Dynamic pressure diagram
What is dynamic pressure?
Why fit a PRV? PRVs are installed in residential, semi-commercial and public buildings to reduce and stabilise the inlet water pressure. If the differential pressure is too high it may prevent control valves from operating or isolating and on potable water application, the force of water from the tap or other outlet may be too fierce which could cause localised flooding. PRVs are designed to reduce water pressure and maintain it to a set level preventing damage to those components installed downstream of the PRV.
Static pressure diagram
What is static pressure? Static pressure is the head or pressure of water in a system when that water is at rest. Static pressure control is therefore the maintenance of a set pressure within a system when there is no demand, i.e. no flow. This is particularly useful for single point of use outlets, especially where protection is required due to low pressure rating of, for example, washing machines and showers.
12 JULY/AUGUST 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Dynamic pressure, in comparison, is the static pressure of the body of water but it also includes the momentum of the fluid in motion. Therefore, dynamic pressure control is the maintenance of a set pressure within a system when the water is moving. The key difference is that a dynamic PRV will only control the pressure when
‘DROP TIGHT’
When a PRV operates under both flow and no-flow conditions, this is known as ‘Drop-Tight’ control.
012_PHPI_JULYAUG22_Layout 1 17/06/2022 12:04 Page 13
water is moving. If there is no demand the pressure can creep up without regulation. Setting is done using a pressure gauge installed in the pipework or in the valve. Ideally the pressure gauge should be upstream of the valve.
Which PRV should I use? There is a selection to choose from based on the application (cold water or hot and cold-water service), with or without a pressure gauge, set using a screwdriver or a Dial up setting. There are also many considerations that an installer must take into account when selecting a PRV, such as: ● ● ● ● ●
Connection size and type Set pressure Temperature Back pressure Required capacity
What is ‘drop-tight’ control? When a PRV operates under both flow and no-flow conditions, this is known as ‘Drop-Tight’ control. ‘Drop-Tight’ control prevents the pressure from “creeping” (an increase in downstream pressure under no-flow conditions).
Can the end user adjust the pressure themselves? Yes, as the valve works off a spring and diaphragm you can set the outlet pressure by turning the screw on the top of the plastic cover (Caleffi 533 Series) or the by turning the pre-adjustable dial up knob complete with pressure setting indicator (Caleffi 535 series).
Can the PRV be installed in any orientation?
PRVs are designed to reduce water pressure and maintain it to a set level preventing damage to those components installed downstream of the PRV. The PRV has a flow direction arrow cast onto the body – the valve must be installed with the flow in the direction of the arrow. The valve can be installed horizontally or vertically but must not be installed upside down. If the valve is installed horizontally than the cartridge should be vertically mounted.
Commercial & Domestic Altecnic offer a range of PRVs for both commercial and domestic applications. For example, the Altecnic 533H series PRV (pictured above) was designed for small applications, such as apartments, to protect water systems, where valve size and lack of noise are important aspects. This specific series of pressure reducing valves is certified according to the EN 1567 standard for operating with inlet water temperatures of up to 80°C.
Where should a PRV be installed? The PRV should be installed downstream of the main isolating valve on the cold-water inlet. In apartments these may also be installed after the main inlet valve of the recirculating hot water system. As you may need to access the cartridge for future service or replacement, care should be taken in respect of where the valve is installed so that you have sufficient room to maintain the valve
Do I need a strainer in the system to protect the PRV? A strainer will protect a PRV from debris that may flow in the pipeline, which could disturb the operation of the valve. The strainer may already be installed as part of the system design. For example, Altecnic 533 and 535 series PRVs both incorporate a strainer screen as part of the cartridge assembly.
Alternatively, Altecnic also offer PRVs for commercial applications. For example, the 300 range of commercial or industrial PRVs includes an automatic pilot-controlled valve and can regulate to a near zero flow as standard with no need for special low flow devices or bypasses. WRAS approved with a robust design the Prescal 300 (pictured alongside) is a durable, accurate PRV for larger projects.

HEATING & RENEWABLES
THE ROAD TO HEAT NETWORKS
Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Services at Worcester Bosch, dives deeper into heat network technology and where it will be deployed on the road to net zero.
O
ne of the technologies that the government want us to transition to for the net zero carbon agenda is heat networks. They have stated that they would like to see around 20% of all homes in the UK use a heat network system (or as part of a larger district heating network) well in advance of the 2050 net zero target. We believe this is a highly ambitious figure and unlikely that existing homes will be connected to such a system in these sorts of volumes.
Looking closer at functionality District heating systems are a very popular form of technology and common in high density housing, apartment blocks and multi occupancy buildings. Within each apartment or housing unit, even if they are adjacent, is a heat interface unit, which takes hot primary water from large calorifiers typically stored in the basement of an apartment block, heating the domestic water instantaneously, and dealing with the central heating system in each apartment. Within the Heat Interface Unit, (HIU), there are heat meters that are measuring how much heat each apartment is taking from the central calorifier or tank, and how much they are using, and then billed accordingly. The technology itself is quite agnostic or impartial on what fuel is used. At present heat networks are mostly run off
a gas-fired boiler system, which of course isn’t good enough or won’t get us to the net zero carbon target. In plans we have seen, it suggests that a property which is part of a heat network system, would be classified as net zero carbon ready. With this, the property owners or owners of the Heat Network System would be given a period of time to convert the way they heat the calorifier of hot water to a net zero carbon methodology.
District heating systems are a very popular form of technology and common in high density housing, apartment blocks and multi occupancy buildings. Where do we go from here? It is likely at present that a gas fired heat network system will move to something like a heat pump or solar thermal or even waste industrial heat, which is happening in a small amount of cases in certain parts of London. Gas fired heat network systems are a very popular and common system particularly in Eastern Europe and awareness is growing
14 JULY/AUGUST 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
in the UK too. They are very difficult to retrofit into existing properties, but for brand new projects and properties they certainly have a role in the market. Recently there has been some bad news surrounding heat networks, where it was discovered that Ofgem don’t have any authority or control of the supply of heat. They do have authority over the supply of gas and electricity, but not over heat. In the Queen’s Speech, and legislation connected to the Queen’s Speech, it was stated that Ofgem will be given the authority to manage the cost of this district heat and how much each occupier and tenant will have to pay towards this. This is looking to be capped or limited to ensure that homeowners are not unduly charged. In summary, the future is looking pretty rosy for district heating and we are seeing projects and cities all over the country actually investing in such types of installations, which is promising both for the industry and the future of it. HEATING & RENEWABLES
A new reality is emerging but decarbonisation e policy is stuck in th lm co al past, says M Farrow, Head of Public Affairs at OFTEC.
ANAGILEAPPROACH I
n 2017 the UK government set out its Clean Growth Strategy, signalling the direction of travel for off-grid decarbonisation. Today it remains the foundation of the government’s plans to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Yet so much has changed in these past five years from the pandemic and cost of living crisis to the conflict in Ukraine. If we want decarbonisation to succeed, these policies must evolve to reflect the new reality. There’s no getting away from the fact that rural homes and businesses need to adopt low carbon heating systems and move away from fossil fuels. The challenge is that household finances are under huge strain and there is very little appetite, let alone the disposable income, for consumers to make significant investments in greener heating.
The government itself recognises this, stating in its Heat and Buildings Strategy: “Our ambition is to ensure that the costs of decarbonising heat and buildings falls fairly across society”. The problem is the rhetoric does not match the reality. Under the proposals, from 2026 off-gas grid households will no longer be able to install a new fossil fuel oil boiler. Instead, in most cases, they will be expected to install a heat pump.
Off-grid challenge For many properties, heat pumps are a sensible choice and they are an important part of the transition to low carbon heating. OFTEC supports their rollout and is equipping technicians with the skills they need to install the technology. We must recognise, however, that off-grid
There is no one size fits all answer to the complex challenge of decarbonisation 16 JULY/AUGUST 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
properties typically have poor energy efficiency and pose a range of other practical challenges. These households are likely to face huge costs and disruption to install a heat pump and associated retrofit improvements – in some cases more than £20,000. This makes it all the more perplexing that rural homes are being targeted first for heat pumps, nine years earlier than consumers on mains gas who are able replace their system like for like until 2035. Even if we park the issue of this policy’s unfairness, the reality is we are likely to see resistance from consumers which will stall decarbonisation efforts. It’s not just the cost to individual households. The government is facing increased scrutiny over public expenditure post pandemic and the green agenda’s cost to the taxpayer. The government has claimed the cost of heat pumps will fall between 25% and 50% by 2025 but, with rising inflation, it’s hard to see how this can realistically be achieved.
016_PHPI_JULYAUG22_Layout 1 17/06/2022 11:52 Page 17
If it isn’t, will the government pick up the bill and set aside more money for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to help consumers, or will the burden fall on households to fill the gap? For off-grid households facing the 2026 deadline, there isn’t much time to find an answer. We also need to consider the vital role of heating technicians in supporting the low carbon transition. Small businesses are facing their own pressures in the current economic climate of rising costs. For some technicians, the time may not feel right to diversify into new and uncertain markets, particularly if there isn’t yet the demand from consumers.
A pragmatic approach So, how can we refine decarbonisation policy to reflect the new reality we are living in? The focus needs to be on delivering low cost, easy to implement solutions which deliver bang for buck for both households and the government. This requires a pragmatic and agile approach where multiple technologies are used, creating a diverse and fair market fuelled by choice. 98% of oil households surveyed wanted the choice of switching to HVO
Over 100 oil heated properties have now successfully converted to HVO
There is no one size fits all answer to the complex challenge of decarbonisation and we can’t pin all our hopes on one solution. We need to be technology neutral and recognise that every home, particularly off-grid, is different and use all the options at our disposal.
Renewable liquid fuels Yes, heat pumps should be firmly part of the mix but we need alternatives for buildings that are unsuitable. For oil heated
homes, renewable liquid fuels present a genuine solution. Our industry has proven the viability of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, a fossil free, sustainably sourced fuel which immediately reduces emissions by 88%. Over 100 oil properties have already successful converted to HVO in the past twelve months as part of a demonstration. Transitioning to HVO involves a simple conversion and there is an existing installer base and distribution network ready to deliver the fuel at pace. The near drop-in replacement fuel also reduces the need for energy efficiency improvements and can be completed as part of a routine service to keep disruption to a minimum. Over 98% of oil households out of over 4,000 surveyed want the choice of being able to switch to renewable liquid fuels. Our industry has made significant progress in demonstrating their potential but we need the policy support from government to progress to a wider rollout. Fundamentally, it should be up to consumers to decide how they want to transition to greener heating, whether it’s a heat pump or renewable liquid fuel. But how can consumers exercise choice if there is only one option on the table? As we edge closer to the next general election, the cost of living will likely remain a central concern for rural voters. Now is the time for the government to listen and act to ensure rural households have affordable and realistic solutions to decarbonise. For more information please www.rdr.link/pah015

PRIME TIME
Insulating the pipework associated with heat pumps is a small but important part of an installation, says Dave Smith, founder of Condensate Pro.
I
ncreasingly, more heat pumps are being installed as legislation begins to make an impact and homeowners become more aware of renewables. For installers used to gas boilers, it is important to remember that heat pumps are not as forgiving. Therefore, making sure the efficiency of a heat pump installation is the best it can be relies on the survey, design, specification, installation, commissioning, customer handover as well as service and maintenance. Insulation is a small but important part of this equation, not just at the very beginning of the installation but all through the life of the heat pump installation. It is especially vital that the outside pipework insulation is right for the job and joints, gaps and holes are sealed so that very little heat or energy is lost. It also has to look professional on a customer’s property, not just at initial installation, but forever. Seeing the demand for professional insulation grow following the launch of our solution for condensate pipes, we developed ‘Primary Pro’, which helps installers provide maximum efficiency with a professional finish on any customers’ home or property. The Primary Pro product includes bespoke 28mm x 19mm UV-stable and weatherproof insulation and a ‘Bond & Seal’ sealant.
Eliminating callbacks As an installer myself, I am really passionate about not only protecting heating systems and eliminating callbacks
and it can be fitted in all weathers. Sealing joints and the holes through the fabric of the wall where the insulation enters into the building is as important as the insulation itself. Primary Pro’s ‘Bond & Seal’ seal helps to seal all joints and the fabric of the wall and installers can create clean finishes, offering maximum protection. All Primary Pro products ensure cost effective installations can be made in any weather, with is easy-to-cut insulation that fits around valves and other fittings. It is also simple to maintain thought the life of the system, by applying our water based maintenance coat as and when needed.
Business opportunity
for installers and heating manufacturers but also making sure the heat pump and system is working to its maximum efficiency and that’s why we developed the product. It offers installers a quick, neat and cost effective way to provide insulation on external heating pipework, improving the aesthetics and protection performance over traditional lagging or plastic boxing –

he rising cost of living has affected all areas of life, not least, how much people are spending on heating their homes. This has led many to reassess their bills and look for ways to cut back. The boiler has a huge role to play in this and smart controls can be key to unlocking and maximising their efficiency. Research carried out by the University of Salford found that controls enable users to save as much as 41% on their energy bills – and smart controls can help increase this saving. As any installer will know, a crucial element to the job is ensuring customers feel satisfied with the installation experience and that they are armed with the knowledge they need to operate their heating system efficiently and effectively. Through smart controls, installers have a great opportunity to provide their customers with solutions that will ensure they are meeting heating needs and aren’t paying over the odds on their bills.
Lizzie Wilkinson, Head of Domestic Product Management at Ideal Heating, discusses how smart controls can be used to reduce costs and maximise the efficiency of a boiler.
Taking control Smart controls come with a wide range of features which help maximise the efforts homeowners are making to cut their energy consumption. One of these key features is the ability to set multiple, easily adjustable heating periods. Long gone are the days when households would simply set the heating to come on for an hour in the morning and
20 JULY/AUGUST 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
an hour in the evening. Advances in thermostats mean they now offer ultimate lifestyle-led heating which can be varied throughout the day and from one day to the next. Users whose controls feature internet connectivity and app-controlled heating can make further changes in real-time – including when they’re out and about. Our newly completed range of Halo programmable room thermostats are compatible with our full range of Logic and Vogue boilers, whether combi, system or heat only. For customers with larger homes, 2-zone options are available. The 2-zone upgrade gives homeowners greater control and flexibility, for example upstairs and downstairs can be set on separate schedules. Whether on a two zone or not, those who fit a Halo Combi Wi-Fi thermostat with our Logic MAX Combi boiler can even achieve an A+ energy efficiency rating.

Smart controls come with a wide range of features which help maximise the efforts homeowners are making to cut their energy consumption. Ticking all the boxes
Behind the scenes While the addition of apps and Wi-Fi can help homeowners play a more active role in reducing waste, there a number of features which can work behind the scenes, unlocking further potential within the system to increase efficiency. Our Halo Wi-Fi control uses the location of a user’s mobile phone to determine if members of the household are within a pre-set ‘home’ boundary and only heats the home when needed so end-users don’t find themselves heating an empty home. This is particularly handy for those days when users forget to change the settings, or plans change. Another benefit of smart controls is that they can help to detect and identify any faults that might be limiting efficiency within the system. By notifying the homeowner, this reduces the amount of time a boiler may be working ineffectively. A key feature which helps users save energy is internet connected weather compensation. By reacting to external temperature changes, the boiler is constantly adjusting the heating to ensure its operating as efficiently as possible.
There are a variety of smart controls on the market which are packed with features to help make heating the home an easy and straightforward process, as well as comply with regulation. For example, devices with enhanced load compensation are an easy way to meet the requirements of Boiler Plus when making a replacement install. We’re committed to ticking all the boxes. Halo has specifically designed features to make life easier for both the installer and the user. For example, our Halo for combi boilers comes with a pre-wired smart interface enabling a simple plug, pair and play sequence without the hardwiring, and
those for heat and system have only one wiring centre. Both options are aimed at making installation quick and easy – the combi version can even be set up in as little as four minutes. Smart controls give installers a practical solution to helping homeowners overcome challenging economic times. But more than this, these features all double up to helping the UKs housing stock go greener as we move towards the government’s 2050 net zero target for greenhouse gas emissions. Ensuring homeowners understand the key features behind smart controls will help give them peace of mind and better meet their own requirements. For more information please www.rdr.link/pah017

NAVIEN’S NEW BOILERS Navien has further extended its NCB gas boiler range.
I
n the last issue of PHPI we reported on the launch of Navien’s NCB700 combi gas boiler, and now the company has added to the NCB family with the introduction of its new NCB500 and NCB300 models. Able to fit inside a cupboard due to a 280mm depth, each boiler is available as a combi, while there are also system and regular versions of the NCB500. All models can achieve hot water outputs of up to 41kW while achieving an ErP efficiency of 93%. Thanks to a flow adjustment valve and auto mixing valve, the NCB500 is able to provide hot water with no changes in DHW temperature or flow rate. The boiler also features a built-in, text-driven digital display panel; designed to be simple to program and use. It includes a two-channel timer and allows end users to monitor their energy usage. The NCB500 is available in outputs of either 37kW or 41kW respectively and also benefits from a keyless filling link; as no key or hose is required, repressurising the heating system is straightforward for installers and homeowners. The range is completed by the NCB300, which is a pared down version of its larger cousins. There are three sizes of NCB300 available, with DHW outputs of 28kW, 37kW and 41kW to choose from, plus each unit benefits from an LCD control panel for management of heating and hot water temperatures.
We can now offer exceptional boilers capable of fitting inside a cupboard with ease, without compromising on energy efficiency or performance. Each boiler utilises a stainless steel heat exchanger, to ensure a long lifespan, alongside high levels of reliability. This key component has been designed and developed to maximise heat transfer efficiently, as well as cope with a range of high temperatures and pressures – without compromising hot water delivery.
Added efficiency As with Navien’s NCB700, both the NCB500 and NCB300 are hydrogen-ready, enabling them to operate using a blend of 20% hydrogen and 80% natural gas. In addition, the new gas boilers are designed to be fitted and used in conjunction with

the company’s Smart Plus control pack; doing so increases their overall efficiency to an A+ ErP energy rating. Commenting on the extended NCB range, Jason Davies, National Business Manager at Navien said: “Building upon the excellence of the NCB700, these two new models complete the range with the high levels of quality and hot water delivery associated with Navien. We can now offer exceptional boilers capable of fitting inside a cupboard with ease, without compromising on energy efficiency or performance.” He continued: “The NCB500 utilises our renowned expertise and engineering to ensure consistent DHW temperatures and flow rates, while the NCB300 is the first hydrogen-ready boiler in its price bracket. Adding these models alongside the NCB700 means Navien now offers the ultimate in hot water and heating technology for a wealth of applications and property sizes.” For more information please www.rdr.link/pah018

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
David Barnes, Marketing Manager at KNIPEX UK, looks at the pliers and pipe cutters designed to make life easier for heating and plumbing installers.
A HELPING HAND
A
ll plumbing and heating professionals use a wide range of tools in their everyday work. The one they perhaps reach for most frequently are pliers, because they can be used for such a diverse range of jobs. Pliers have been improved by numerous advances over the years, enabling the professional plumber to work quickly, easily and safely. Today, the very best pliers have special functionality built into them which can save installers time and money. For example, the KNIPEX Cobra Quick-Set has a slide function for easier working in very confined and inaccessible places. The opening width can be set directly on the workpiece, eliminating any annoying fiddling around. You simply press the button, slide the pliers joint fully open, place the upper jaw on the workpiece and push the lower jaw onto the workpiece. The pliers then clamp onto the component securely by itself thanks to the jaw geometry. This means the user can put all energy into the desired movement without pressing the pliers handle together and without energy loss.
Two-in-one As an example of a hand tool which combines two tools in one, the KNIPEX Pliers Wrench has been designed for work

The blade unit integrated in the Knipex Bix pipe cutter can be rotated by 180°. on quality screw connections made of brass, gunmetal or stainless steel or on chrome-plated fittings. The tool combines a pair of pliers and a wrench, making it a real all-rounder and a vital part of any tool case. It replaces a whole set of wrenches, both metric and imperial.
24 JULY/AUGUST 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Its gripping jaws can be adjusted quickly, reliably and conveniently at the push of a button. Thanks to smooth, parallel jaws, screw connections with sensitive surfaces can also be fixed gently into place without causing any damage. In addition, the pliers wrench does not have to be removed when loosening or tightening screws: the stroke between the gripping jaws allows it to screw with the ratchet principle. What’s more, it also serves as a vice. The high transmission ratio of approximately 1:10 enables an increase in manual force for safe holding, gripping, pressing or bending of workpieces. The chosen setting shows the model on two scales: metric above the toothed setting grid on the front and imperial on the rear of the plier’s head. With the scale the desired width across flats can be set in advance as an alternative to the adjustment with the push button on the workpiece. For especially sensitive surfaces, KNIPEX offers plastic jaw covers as accessories for the 180, 250, and 300mm variants. The protective jaws are easily attached by hand and snap into place to suit the geometry of the pliers' jaws so that they do not slip during work. The soft, smooth gripping surface ensures that holding, gripping and fixing designer fittings or extremely sensitive materials does not result in damage.

the very best pliers have special functionality built into them which can save installers time and money.
A cut above Pipe cutting is also an important job that can be made less arduous by owning the right tool. The KNIPEX BiX (90 22 10) pipe cutter, for instance, can be used to cut plastic pipes cleanly without shavings. It fits comfortably in one hand and can be used to cut high-temperature plastic drain
pipes and empty electrical conduits in no time and with little effort. The tool is suitable for unreinforced plastic pipes with a diameter of 20 to 50mm and a wall thickness of up to 2.4mm. The blade unit integrated in the tool can be rotated by 180°. The blade can be attached in the centre of the tool to cut plastic pipes of various diameters to length or to reliably cut sealing sleeves two to three mm from the wall with the blade positioned on the outside. The 180mm long KNIPEX TubiX pipe cutter also makes work much easier. Due to 10 quality needle bearings that are integrated in the cutting wheel and guide rollers, copper, brass and stainless steel pipes with a wall thickness of up to 2mm and diameters from 6 to 35mm (1/4"-1 3/8")
can be cut using just one hand. All functions can be easily carried out with just one hand with the QuickLock single-handed quick adjustment which guides and locks the tool onto the pipe, then accurately positions the cutting wheel for different pipe diameters. Afterwards an integrated, retractable deburring tool smooths out the cut surface. The cutting wheel is made of quality ball-bearing steel and can be exchanged quickly. Hand tools are such an important part of a plumber’s day and these four tools can help installers save time and money out on site. Despite the grim statistics on tool thef ts, not to m ention the terrible effe ct it has on livelihoods, th ere is a way to protect yo ur business, says D uncan Jackson, co-foun der of ARMD.
TOOL THEFT: PROTECT YOURSELF eemingly every week the latest grim statistics on the scale of tool theft across the UK are released. Thieves are becoming more brazen and can be in and out of a van in minutes. Thefts are happening in broad daylight, with thieves drilling the locks on van doors or cutting and ‘peeling’ back the side or sometimes even the roof of a van to access the load bay. For now at least, tool theft is a problem that is not going away and the trade needs an answer, a practical and easily accessible way to protect their businesses. Amongst all the shocking statistics, perhaps one of the most worrying is that only around half of all tradespeople have adequate insurance to cover them if they suffer a tool loss. This lack of insurance stems from many reasons, such as perceived cost, ease of accessibility and understanding the claims process, but good insurance is crucial for tradespeople to protect their businesses against theft. Tool insurance is often viewed by some general insurance companies merely as a
S
bolt on when selling the trade Public Liability insurance, but it could actually be the difference between getting back on the tools quickly. A key element of any protection for the trade is dedicated tool insurance that allows 24/7 ‘in transit’ cover. Some tradespeople have been unable to claim after a theft because they were unaware their policy did not cover tools left in the van overnight which is sadly when the theft occurred. Some tradespeople who make an insurance claim also get caught out as they did not realise that the value of their tools depreciate over time. Another pain point is the speed of claim processing. If you have not recorded your tool anywhere (with a proof of purchase, for instance), then it can be difficult for an insurance company to process it, which means other installation jobs may be lost as you wait for the result. You also need to consider security products for your van, as some alarms may not go off, especially as the sides of vans are often peeled away by thieves to access the interior.

Get ARMD Change has been needed for a long time, and the ARMD platform has been designed and developed with the trade to address these barriers and make protecting your business easier and more accessible. Our CEO, Devin Chawda’s, last company was a smart home security business. We were continually asked by installers if they could use our technology in their vans because their tools kept getting stolen. From this, an idea was born and consequently the ARMD App and website were developed. The platform allows you to quickly and simply claim digitally through an easy-to-use App and website if you have recorded them in the tool inventory – which is free to use. Essentially there are just four steps; ● Record the tools you own, how much they are worth and any receipts of purchase. This will make it so much easier to claim if a theft occurs ● Protect yourself with van security products, such as van vaults
● Insure yourself with a dedicated tools policy and that will enable you to replace what you have lost. You can insure your tools for as little as £56 a year ● Replace your tools quickly thanks to a quick insurance payout and get back to work Tradesman Andy Jordan, who works mainly for the Dante Group, has been in the trade for 13 years. Although he had never been a victim of theft before, he knew the trade were in essence ‘sitting ducks’. He recorded
his tools on the App and got insured. Shortly afterwards, on a Thursday afternoon, thieves struck and broke into his van, taking his tools. His insurance claim with ARMD was turned around in less than 72 hours and he was back to work with new tools within days. We were really proud to have helped Andy get back to work so quickly and it shows that tool theft, unpleasant though it may be, does not have to be the end of the line. THE COMFORT ZONE
With summer upon us, engineers and installers need workwear fit for warmer weather. Peter Dumigan, Managing Director of the Hultafors Group UK, which owns Snickers Workwear, takes look at some of the options to consider.
F
or nearly 50 years, Snickers Workwear has been building a workwear trend that now delivers eco-friendly, technically advanced and high-quality working clothes that are built to last – and look good at both work and at play. In essence, it’s sustainable workwear that can be used on site and for leisure activities too. In today’s climate of carbon footprints and wastefulness, environmental considerations are more important than ever for workwear brands. At Snickers Workwear, we develop long-lasting,

functional garments. We know that our customers demand durable products that can sustain long hours of hard work, and this is also the cornerstone behind our sustainability work. Every product we make has an impact on the planet. The longer our workwear lasts, the less our environmental impact. Snickers Workwear clothing is trialed and tested from the Arctic circle to the southern Mediterranean, tried and tested in extreme environmental conditions – cold, heat, wind and rain. But not only are these working clothes tested for performance, they’re now also tested for ‘Environmental Sustainability’. The company’s product design and development has always been driven by a continual investigation of user needs and experiences in as wide a range of working environments and weather conditions as possible. But nowadays, recyclability and

carbon footprint impact is a key part of that evaluation. So, it’s not just workwear functionality and physical demands on the body that’s researched, it’s also the physical demands that product manufacturing and waste disposal place on the world around us that matters too.
Verifiable Sustainability But if you want to be more than just cool and comfortable at work this summer – and do your for bit for saving the planet – take a look at the ‘Verifiable Sustainability’ in Snickers Workwear new T- and Polo-shirts. The brand aims to be at the forefront of sustainability in Workwear which is why the new lightweight Polo and T-shirts are made of 100% recycled polyester with a bio-based, anti-odour finish plus a smooth texture and efficient moisture transport for working comfort.
030_PHPI_JULYAUG22_Layout 1 17/06/2022 11:15 Page 31
If recyclability is your particular focus in eco-friendly priorities, then the AllroundWork Hoodies and Gilets are worth consideration. Made from 100% recycled polyester, the clothes are comfortable and lightweight and designed for freedom of movement.
Choices for Summer
A cool experience On a hot day you really need a garment made from a fabric that has the capacity for ventilation and moisture transport. Snickers Workwear uses 37.5 fabric technology to provide hardworking tradesmen and women with the coolest experience. ● The active particles used in
37.5 technology are derived from natural sources such as coconut shells and volcanic minerals ● Fabrics with 37.5 technology dry up to five times faster than performance fabrics without ● The hotter a user gets the stronger the drive force removing moisture becomes ● 37.5 works to the level of 37.5 degrees, both when it comes to humidity percentage and temperature
If your focus is on being kind to animals, the Sustainable Merino Wool midand base-layer clothes are ‘Mulesing-Free, designed to help you stay warm or cool because of the nature of its 100% all-natural Merino Wool fabric that delivers optimal comfort for all kinds of working environments and leisure activities. Designed by nature for ventilation and insulation, Merino wool is soft, and naturally odour-preventive for an all-day fresh feel. It is also temperature-regulating and repels water and dirt particles.
For you to stay cool and comfortable in warmer weather, workwear choices matter a lot. For optimum performance your workwear needs to deliver ventilation, have a fabric that dries fast while still offering the protection you need. Make the right choices and you’ll be well prepared for a hot day’s at work. Here are three factors to keep in mind when dressing for warm weather: VENTILATION When temperatures are on the up, ventilation is crucial. It can be achieved in different ways, either by how the workwear is designed or the functionality it delivers. Two of the main features Snickers workwear integrates into its workwear to offer great breathability are the 37.5 technology for cooling comfort and Mechanical Air Flow. FUEL FOR THOUGHT
TOOLS & EQUIPMENT
Are sky-h igh fuel bills h ur ting your busin ess? Dan Powell fro m Honest John Vans shares his top money -saving fuel tips.
A
re your profits vanishing in a haze of diesel smoke? Protect your hard-earned cash with these money-saving fuel tips from Honest John Vans.
Check your tyres You should check the condition of your tyres at least once a week. If the tyres are under-inflated they will create more rolling resistance and this will force the engine to work harder and use more fuel. The correct tyre pressures will be listed in your van’s owner’s manual and also on a sticker or plate on the vehicle – usually inside the driver’s door frame. If your tyres are worn and in need of replacement then consider replacing them for a model that has a high-efficiency rating. All tyres are scored from A to G for fuel economy. And you could save money in the long run by spending a little more on a set of tyres with a good fuel economy rating.
Get your van serviced On the face of it, skipping or delaying your van’s annual service may look like a quick
money-saving idea. But in reality, it will increase your van’s wear and tear, while also making it less fuel-efficient. A dirty or clogged up fuel or air filter will hurt your van’s fuel economy because it will reduce engine efficiency and force the vehicle to use more diesel. That’s why you should have your van serviced every 12 months. And always insist on a full oil and filter change as dirty or old oil can also make your van's engine less efficient.
Streamline your van Heavy vans use more fuel, so it pays to take a weekly stocktake of what's in the back of your van to see what you do/don’t need. Even cutting weight by a small amount will improve your van’s mpg, which will produce long term savings over the year. Roof racks, pipe carriers and ladder racks will all increase your van’s thirst for fuel. Why? Because they create resistance against the air that flows over the tip of the vehicle, thus forcing the engine to work harder. If you don't need the items bolted to the roof of your van then
consider removing them until you do need them again.
Don’t run low on fuel It can be tempting to avoid filling up when the price of fuel is high but it’s another example of a false economy. If you drive with a near-empty tank you risk clogging the fuel filters – or worse. If the van has drawn in air instead of fuel at any time then both the pump and injectors could be damaged. If you travel short distances then consider filling the tank halfway, as a full load of fuel will add weight and increase fuel consumption.
Shop smarter It’s never been easier to compare local fuel prices. Many sat navs will do this for you or you can search online, which means you can find the supermarket or independent fuel station with the lowest costs. It may also pay to find a fuel station that operates a loyalty card scheme, which will give you money off your next fill or something small like a free coffee.

WATER HEATING & CYLINDERS
PHPI takes a look at Alpha’s Flowsmart system – answering our questions is Darran Smith, Technical Manager for Alpha.
SMART THINKING Q
for?
What kind of property has FlowSmart been designed
Alpha’s FlowSmart system increases the combination boiler’s ability to deliver hot water, making it a serious alternative to a conventional boiler for properties with above average hot water demands – whether it be family homes or small commercial buildings. Combi boilers have long been accepted as the most energy-efficient and space-saving boiler option available. Not surprisingly, they are therefore the popular choice for the majority of new domestic installations in the UK. However, the combi’s inability to supply large volumes of hot water simultaneously to a number of outlets often results in the conventional boiler and hot water cylinder set-up being the preferred option. For those looking to upgrade their heating system to achieve substantial hot water demands, options such as heat pumps may well be appealing from a sustainability perspective, yet out of reach logistically at this current time. Equally, there may be a temptation to wait for the introduction of hydrogen into the gas network.
34 JULY/AUGUST 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
But while we await government intervention to make this possible, there are simple and practical solutions which can be applied now to enhance the performance of existing gas boilers and render them more efficient. Cue FlowSmart, which brings together the energy and space efficiency advantages of a combi, with the hot water delivery rate of a system boiler, in one convenient package. By incorporating a GasSaver and small thermal store, FlowSmart allows a combi boiler to deliver a flow rate of 18 litres of hot water per minute, at 50ºC or above, for up to 30 minutes – more than three times longer than a typical system boiler set-up. Together with its superior energy efficiency and ease of installation, this makes FlowSmart a great energy-efficient option for large households.
034_PHPI_JULYAUG22_Layout 1 17/06/2022 11:03 Page 35
Q
Q
How does it work?
The system incorporates a combination boiler, a GasSaver flue gas heat recovery unit (either built-in or as a separate ‘top box’) and a 50 litre thermal store (available as a wall-hung or floor standing unit). When there is a hot water demand, cold mains water flows into the GasSaver where it is pre-heated using heat reclaimed from boiler flue gases. The pre-heated water then passes through the thermal store which draws heat from the boiler’s primary circuit (also known as the central heating system). There, it is heated further before then passing through a blending valve, where it is controlled to an optimum 30ºC before entering the boiler. With less work to do to raise the water’s temperature, the boiler can satisfy high hot water demands for long periods, without detrimental effect to flow rate. This negates the need for a large, permanent store of hot water.
Q
Is it more efficient than a solution which combines a system boiler with an unvented cylinder? FlowSmart delivers exceptional energy efficiency, consuming less electricity and using up to 25% less gas to provide hot water than a conventional system boiler set-up with a 200-litre unvented cylinder. This is because water is only heated as needed and energy isn’t wasted in maintaining a stored supply of hot water. Energy efficiency of the FlowSmart is also enhanced by the flue gas heat recovery technology within the GasSaver.
What do heating engineers need to know about the installation of the unit?
most modern time and temperature controls are compatible with FlowSmart allowing simple and personalised set-up
Q
FlowSmart is a compact and energy efficient solution featuring a combination boiler. It can deliver enough instantaneous hot water to satisfy even the most demanding household – and without any negative effect on flow rate. From an installation perspective, the small thermal store takes up much less space than a cylinder, enabling the complete FlowSmart system to be sited together in an average airing cupboard. There are limited pipework requirements making for a very simple process. To find out more about Flowsmart please www.rdr.link/pah024
What kind of controls are needed?
As the system is based around a combination boiler, most modern time and temperature controls are compatible with FlowSmart allowing simple and personalised set-up and operation of the heating. To maximise efficiency an intelligent control such as the Alpha Climatic is recommended. Classed as an Enhanced Load Compensator, it is capable of measuring and maintaining the temperature inside the building by modulating and limiting the boiler flow temperature depending on the measured room temperature.

WATER HEATING & CYLINDERS
Lite WORK Andrews Water Heaters has expanded its MAXXflo EVO condensing water heater range with the new MAXXflo EVO Lite and the MAXXflo EVO 150.
n June, the new minimum heat generator seasonal efficiency for direct-fired water heaters increased to 91% (GCV) for natural gas and to 92% for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The uplift, as outlined in Part L of Building Regulations, will begin the phase out of non-condensing water heaters in favour of more efficient condensing appliances. The changes are part of the government’s roadmap to improve the energy efficiency of existing non-domestic buildings and help the UK move towards its net zero target by 2050. “The new standards will effectively rule out the current option for like-for-like non-condensing water heater replacements in the vast majority of buildings,” said Jess Leeson, Segment Manager at Baxi Commercial Solutions. “We wanted to ensure that our customers have a fully compliant solution for every commercial requirement,” she continued. “We believe we’ve done just that with the addition of our new high specification MAXXflo EVO 150 and MAXXflo EVO Lite to our existing condensing water heater range.”
I
Design features The MAXXflo EVO 150 and MAXXflo EVO Lite condensing water heaters deliver efficiencies as high as 98% and reduced carbon and NOx emissions, offering a sustainable solution for many commercial hot water applications. The design of the MAXXflo EVO features what the company calls “a unique
configuration” of all stainless-steel burners, heat exchangers and cylinders, designed for maximum efficiency, efficient use of plant room space and straightforward maintenance. The new MAXXflo EVO 150 delivers the same performance as the current MAXXflo EVO family, but with a larger output of 150kW. It has integral twin heat exchangers, a tank capacity of 300 litres and a high recovery rate of 2,572 l/hr.
The Lite stuff
We wanted to ensure that our customers have a fully compliant solution for every commercial requirement “Both the original MAXXflo EVO and the new 150 model have independent service valves and pressure sensors on each heat exchanger to minimise downtime for customers,” Jess explained. “They also have Correx anodes, easy access hatches and connection locations for reduced maintenance.” Safety has been addressed with full anti-legionella functions supplied as standard. Onboard controls operate a legionella cycle to ensure that the whole system is brought up to pasteurisation temperature by monitoring the secondary return temperatures.
36 JULY/AUGUST 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Like the MAXXflo EVO 150, the new MAXXflo EVO Lite has been designed to meet industry requirements for energy-efficient operation. It is available in four models with lower outputs of 15kW, 25kW, 35kW and 45kW, 200 litre storage and recovery rates of 232 l/hr to 695 l/hr. With stainless-steel heat exchanger tubes, low NOx cold burner door and a Bluejet burner, the MAXXflo EVO Lite has been designed to deliver energy-saving operation to help reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. All MAXXflo EVO and MAXXflo EVO Lite models are available in both natural gas and LPG options for installation in off gas grid areas. They are supplied with Siemens controls that enable full control of the burner with accurate charging of the integral tank and temperature control. TAKE CONTROL
The Velis Evo Wi-Fi from Ariston is designed to deliver customers enhanced levels of control over their water heating. PHPI spoke with Victoria Gutierrez, Head of Marketing at Ariston, to discover how this is achieved and to find out more about the unit.
Q
Many customers are increasingly looking for more control over their water heating. How does the Velis Evo Wi-Fi help achieve this? The state-of-the-art Velis Evo Wi-Fi was named ‘Best Hot Water Innovation’ at the Green Home Awards 2021 and is the first and only electric water heater of its kind currently certified for the UK market with Wi-Fi controllability – thanks to the innovative Aqua Ariston Net app. This sophisticated app provides end users with full control and monitoring from their smartphones. They can shuffle through modes and turn the unit on remotely for a hot shower at the perfect time – while benefitting from energy savings of up to 25% using daily and weekly programming. The sustainability credentials of the Velis Evo range are further enhanced by Ariston’s ‘ECO EVO’ function. This electronic control automatically learns
Q
homeowners’ water usage habits, allowing energy savings of up to 14%; the equivalent to running an A+ rated fridge-freezer for approximately a year. In addition, there is a LED Blue Tech touchscreen display, which indicates hot water availability, water temperature, Wi-Fi control and error codes for easy diagnostics.
38 JULY/AUGUST 2022 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
What type of applications is Velis Evo Wi-Fi designed for?
In modern homes, one of the key issues is space – or rather, the lack of it. Indeed, the average UK property measures just 92 square metres in size, while shrinking further in city centres. However, converting to a tankless water heater system can help free up some much-needed space in a variety of properties. The Velis Evo Wi-Fi unit is a modern and space saving alternative to a traditional 100-litre cylinder, making it perfect for small apartments, studios and loft conversions. This is particularly advantageous for homes with an unvented hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard, as the cylinder can be replaced by a more compact unit without compromising hot water availability or performance.
038_PHPI_JULYAUG22_Layout 1 17/06/2022 10:39 Page 39
Q
Q
The unit features a twin tank structure. What is this and what benefits does it bring?
The Velis Evo Wi-Fi boasts a high quality twin tank structure, which is unprecedented in the UK. Each tank is titanium enamelled for added durability, with one tank housing cold water coming into the unit and hot water stored in the other. Ariston’s twin tank technology ensures hot water does not mix with the cold, reducing stratification – and providing up to 16% more hot water when compared to other electric storage water heaters. This also ensures the unit is shower ready in less than half an hour.
Q
Water heaters often need to be installed where there is limited room. Is the Velis Evo Wi-Fi suited for fitting in small spaces?
The Velis Evo Wi-Fi is the slimmest electric water heater in its category – it is only
27cm deep and fits inside an airing cupboard with ease. This is ideal when you consider how much space is at a premium inside modern UK homes. This is in stark contrast to traditional hot water cylinders, which are heavy and unwieldly when it comes to lifting, manoeuvring and installation – as well as rather large. It makes sense to remove the cylinder and replace it with a Velis Evo Wi-Fi water heater in order to free up and maximise valuable space.
Is there anything else installers need to know?
Dry heating technology within the unit provides additional safety against short-circuits, thanks to the heating elements being encased. This also results in increased protection against limescale and allows for quick replacement of the heating elements without draining the tank. The water heater is the perfect combination of comfort and premium Italian design, while it offers rapid reheat times and is shower ready in less than 30 minutes. Available in capacities of 45 and 80 litres, all Velis Evo Wi-Fi models measure just 27cm in depth and benefit from titanium enamelled tank engineering – ensuring durability and extended product life. Each unit is also supplied with an unvented kit, as well as a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty as standard. For more information please www.rdr.link/pah026

LOW TEMPERATURE QUALIFICATION Kevin Wellman, CEO at the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering discusses the CIPHE low temperature heating and hot water in dwellings qualification, that prepares engineers already operating for the future of heat.
T
he plumbing and heating industry will have to play a significant part in helping the UK achieve Net Zero goals. To do so, low temperature systems will be increasingly commonplace. Working with LCL Awards, the CIPHE and its members and groups have been instrumental in the launch of the new Ofqual regulated qualification: Low Temperature Heating and Hot Water Systems in Dwellings. The qualification provides the knowledge behind planning, enabling engineers to design efficient low temperature systems.
Low Temperature and Low Carbon Most engineers are competent with traditional boilers. However, the increased volume of alternative heat source installations, and perceived newness of heat pumps means thousands of experienced engineers will need to refresh their skills to continue offering high quality work. Recognising the qualification’s significance, Lord Callanan, Minister for Business, Energy and Corporate Responsibility said: “The CIPHE’s work to promote low temperature heating skills is a wonderful example of the innovation in skills and education that will be needed to reach Net Zero.”
Confident and qualified It is vital for engineers to understand the factors that influence a heating system, from mass flow rate calculations and heat loss through to radiator and underfloor heating system sizing. Installers can now
enrol on this qualification and find a course near them by using www.rdr.link/pah045 Of course, being able to bring the customer with you will be an essential requirement and this course equips those who successfully complete it with the tools to offer informed and appropriate guidance to the public. In doing so, installers can use heating design principles to better serve
the increased volume of alternative heat source installations, and perceived newness of heat pumps means thousands of experienced engineers will need to refresh their skills to continue offering high quality work. their customers. To support the installer during and after the course, the CIPHE has designed an innovative training package, including a new technical book. The CIPHE continues advocating for competency and professionalism and decided from the outset to make this qualification available to CIPHE members and non-members alike.
The Future of the industry To reach Net Zero, retraining of those already working within the industry will be

essential. Yet, many other obstacles remain to be navigated, including the total number of plumbing and heating engineers in the workforce. Estimates by the Trade Trends Report 2021 suggest there has been a 4.19% decline in entrants to the industry since 2005. Clearly, there is much to be done to have any chance of meeting goals such as the UK’s target of 600,000 heat pump installations annually by 2028. In response, the CIPHE, with the Worshipful Company of Plumbers, has this year introduced a Joint Apprenticeship Support programme. It is designed to provide a smoother entrance into the plumbing and heating engineering industry, and offers increased recognition and pathways for further qualifications to industry newcomers identified as potential industry leaders Plus, it will present guidance and mentorship for young and new engineers as they make their way through the early stages of their career. The CIPHE’s push to raise standards involves promoting resource development and sharing to help engineers embody these standards. The industry is exciting as it goes through this period of change. As low temperature systems grow in popularity, engineers can get on board and offer continually excellent service by learning the technology. They can also confirm their competence and professionalism by enrolling in a CIPHE membership. To learn how to become a CIPHE member or join online visit ciphe.org.uk

It has also been designed with a multi-mode top enabling the ladder to be securely used against flat wall surfaces, external and internal corners, poles, and wall studs as well as having the ability to perform as a standard stepladder or extension ladder.
REHAU has reduced heat losses on its PP-R district heating pipe. The PP-R pipework’s lambda value has recently been improved to 0.023W/mK – an increase over the previous polyurethane foam used. Over an example length of 250m, the newly-improved pipework achieves a 24% reduction in heat losses at 70/40°C flow and return temperatures compared to the previous PP-R generation.
