Have your say

Few in the sector will be unaware of the need to reduce carbon emissions as a consequence of climate change – and with buildings accounting for around 30% of our emissions, and 79% of these emissions coming from heating – it is clear there is much work to be done. When you add in the energy market disruption caused by the conflict in Ukraine, the necessity to reduce our reliance on gas and oil is further underlined.

The Government has acted in the short term to help consumers with rising energy bills through the Energy Price Guarantee. In the longer-term heating and hot water provision will move further towards sustainable, efficient and low carbon energy sources.

Just quite what the future will look like is, of course, difficult to predict. However, it would appear that the government is keen to hear the views of all parties in the sector, including installers. The Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has recently launched a consultation, ‘Improving Boiler Standards and Efficiency’ with the aim of gathering together thoughts on how this can be achieved.

It particular, BEIS wants to hear views on how to ensure all new boilers can run as efficiently as possible. It also would like thoughts on a shift towards hydrogen-ready boilers and a move towards hydrogen heating, and it wants to hear views on the role of hybrid heat-pump gas boiler systems.

Experienced plumbers and heating engineers have years, if not decades of experience providing heating & hot water to properties of all shapes and sizes. With the sector now in the spotlight and the future provision of heating and hot water likely to evolve rapidly in coming years, it may be the right time to provide your thoughts on the topic. You can read the consultation and find out how to submit your views at www.rdr.link/pan001

Throughout the coming year PHPI will keep you in touch with any changes in the market whilst also looking at a host of solutions to help installers navigate the changing sector.

As always, the start of a new year heralds reflections on the old before thoughts inevitably turn forward. With change in the sector afoot, perhaps 2023 is the time to acquire new skills, seek out technologies previously unfamiliar and put forward your views on how energy efficiency and sustainability can become embedded into the industry.

BOILER EFFICIENCY CONSULTATION OPENS

The government has announced a consultation on boiler standards and efficiency. The consultation seeks views on a range of topics, including proposals to improve boiler and heating system efficiency through improvements to minimum standards and proposals to mandate that from 2026 all newly-installed gas boilers are ‘hydrogen-ready’. It also is looking for views on the potential role of gas boiler-electric heat pump hybrids in heat decarbonisation in the 2020s and 2030s.

The proposals aim to reduce domestic gas consumption, and lower both consumer bills and carbon emissions. Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Services at Worcester Bosch, commented: “We’re delighted to see the long-awaited publication of the ‘Improving boiler standards and efficiency’ consultation from BEIS.

“We’re specifically encouraged that BEIS have taken a system-first approach, not just appliance. They cover controls, correct maintenance and tackling boiler oversizing, instead of simply what appliance should generate heat.

“It is also great to see that a technology agnostic position seems to be taking place. The ambitious target of 600,000 heat pumps installations per year by 2028 is referenced, but also there is acknowledgment that hybrid systems will contribute to this is a step in the right direction.

“Finally, the proposed mandate that from 2026 onwards, all new domestic gas boilers need to be hydrogen-ready, is the first written commitment that we can recall from Government which again is very encouraging to see and will boost confidence in the possible future fuel among industry.”

Installers are being invited to respond, the closing date for the consultation is 21st March 2023. To read the full consultation www.rdr.link/pan003

INSTALLERS LOOK TOWARDS HEAT PUMPS FOR FUTURE BUSINESS

A survey of plumbing and heating installers has revealed over half (53%) predict that between half and all their business will come from installing heat pumps and hybrid heat pumps in the next five years.

ARMD and Van Guard have announced a new partnership designed to help prevent and protect tradespeople against tool theft and van crime. The partnership brings together Van Guard’s range of van security products with ARMD’s insurance and fast digital claims.

“With a van broken into every 19 minutes in the UK, equating to more than £30m worth of goods stolen annually from vans alone, the partnership between ARMD and Van Guard makes perfect sense for tradespeople looking to protect their tools, van and ultimately their business,” said Duncan Jackson, Co-Founder of ARMD.

“For over 30 years we’ve been providing high-quality van accessories and security products,” explained Emlyn Harris, Managing Director of Van Guard. “We’ve helped many companies reduce their risk of van crime and improve the safety of their van and fleet, and we’re now proud to be partnering with ARMD on this important initiative. They share our commitment to reducing the incidence of van crime in the UK and we’re looking forward to working together in the future.”

Daikin UK’s latest Installer Confidence Monitor, which surveys members of its Sustainable Home Network, also found that 62% expect their profits to increase over the next 12 months and four out of five (88%) expect profits to increase over the next five years.

Martin Passingham, Product and Training Manager at Daikin UK said: “It’s encouraging that Sustainable Home Network installers see a bright future for heat pumps and hybrid heat pumps and are confident about the future of their businesses.”

The Daikin Sustainable Home Network is free to join and offers heat pump installers a range of benefits.

TAKE CONTROL

Householders are continuing to look at ways to reduce their energy consumption to help combat rising bills. Understanding how their heating system is performing and how they can make small changes to improve its efficiency is one consideration.

Research shows that few people really understand their heating controls and many simply just don’t use them. This is where installers, supported by manufacturers, can play a part in advising and educating consumers on the best products for their circumstances and how to use them.

TPI control

Modern controls are designed to allow you to get the best energy efficiency possible from the heating system. Look out for those with TPI (Time Proportional & Integral) control – a feature in room thermostats that ensures the boiler fires for the shortest possible time in order to reach and maintain a room at the comfort level selected and thus optimise heating efficiency.

Tamper protected thermostat

With a tamperproof thermostat the ‘temperature set’ dial is hidden away, and the set temperature can be maintained without interference. This is particularly advantageous where the thermostat is installed in public areas. If a thermostat is set unnecessarily high, this will lead to

SPECIAL REPORT 10 JANUARY/FEBRUARY2023 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Katie Plumstead, Marketing Manager with ESP, examines how a better understanding of heating controls can help installers and end users limit their energy usage and put a cap on their bills.

uncomfortable temperatures and higher than necessary bills.

Programmable thermostat

A programmable thermostat gives the user an option to schedule at what time and day a call for heat can be made, thus reducing the possibility of wasting energy when the property is empty. This is advantageous when the occupants are at work, and therefore do not have to remember to switch the heating ON/OFF manually. A programmable thermostat ensures that the heating is not activated longer than required.

Immersion heater control

For some systems immersion heaters are used. A metal element heats up a water cylinder and it can take between one to two hours to produce hot water. An immersion heater is manually switched by the user, which means there is the risk that they will not remember to turn it off. Timer controlled solutions can ensure that the

immersion heater is switched off after a set duration. In addition, programmable timer controllers can be used to schedule exactly when the immersion heater is switched on, automatically ensuring hot water is available when required.

Smart controls

The evolution of smart technology continues to play a key role in energy efficiency. It provides homeowners with a real opportunity to make conscious decisions about how they heat their homes and what effect this can have on their energy bills.

A smart thermostat is something that installers can easily add to their customers’ home heating, allowing householders to control and monitor the room temperature and thermostat activity from anywhere in the world, via an app on a smart phone or tablet.

Choice Plus

Available from ESP is the Sangamo range of Choice Thermostats and Choice Controllers. Last year the range underwent a revamp and was relaunched as the Sangamo Plus range of heating and timer controls.

Sangamo Choice Plus offers a wide range of heating and timer controls for domestic, commercial, and industrial use. The range can be broken down into four main product categories –Timer Controllers, Thermostats, Programmable Thermostats and Programmers – with a total of 15 products making up the range.

Sangamo recently expanded the range further to introduce two new colour options across all products offered. The full range is now available in white, silver and black versions.

The evolution of smart technology continues to play a key role in energy efficiency.

AYEAR FOR newskills?

UK, around 30% of the total greenhouse gas emissions come from buildings, and heating accounts for more than three-quarters (79%) of this, which alone represents 23% of all UK emissions.

Looking ahead to 2025

Given the emissions currently generated, the focus of the next few years will undoubtedly be the decarbonisation of heating. There have already been updates to the Building Regulations, which came into force in June last year, with the aim of reducing emissions from new homes and other new buildings by as much as 30%. This will be followed by the Future Homes Standard in 2025, which, through further updates to the Building Regulations, will require homes built from 2025 to produce at least 75% fewer carbon emissions than one built in line with 2013 regulations.

In addition, the Government has announced that from 2025 new homes must

outlines

clear role to play in decarbonisation. Air source heat pumps (ASHP) extract energy from the outside air via a refrigerant and use a compressor to raise the temperature

HEATING & RENEWABLES 12 JANUARY/FEBRUARY2023 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
why 2023 is the year to expand and include air source heat pump installation.

of this refrigerant. The heat generated is then used to provide heating and hot water.

Using a heat pump can significantly reduce the amount of energy required to meet the needs of the property as they typically function at around 300% efficiency – 3kw of heat generated for every 1kw of electricity used – and operate in temperatures as low as -25°C. These efficiency figures compare favourably with the approximately 90% efficiency achieved by new condensing gas boilers.

What does this mean for heating installers now?

To achieve the transition to low carbon heating, the UK will require a large number of qualified heat pump engineers, meaning there are significant opportunities for those with the required knowledge and skills. There are more than 27 million existing homes that need to be retrofitted in the next 25 years as well as installations in the new build properties. However, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) estimates that there are less than 4,000 qualified heat pump installers in the UK*, compared to more than 130,000 Gas Safe Registered engineers.

With the correct support, it is relatively straightforward for qualified and experienced heating professionals to gain the knowledge and qualifications needed to install, commission and maintain heat pumps. In fact, mono-bloc heat pumps do not require F-Gas certification to install or maintain as the refrigerant is sealed within the unit. This means only water pipe connections are required between the heat pump unit and the building’s heating system pipework.

While gas and oil boilers will not disappear overnight, they will be a progressively smaller part of the industry as renewable and low carbon alternatives, such as heat pumps, become more widespread. In addition, there are definite benefits to making the move into this area sooner rather than later. For example, there are currently initiatives in place to encourage homeowners to choose a heat pump as a replacement for their boiler.

Until 2025, the Government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme will provide funding to reduce the cost of heat pump installations in England and Wales. It offers homeowners a grant of up to £5,000

towards the cost. Similarly, the Home Energy Scotland Loan allows homeowners in Scotland to borrow up to £10,000 to fund the installation of a heat pump, with up to 75% cashback. This means the total repayable by the homeowner will be less than £2,500 on an interest-free loan.

Taking the next step

For heating engineers interested in adding heat pumps to the range of services they offer to their customers, seeking training is the first step. One of the best places to start is by looking at what heat pump manufacturers can offer. For example, at Daikin, we offer free product training sessions for installers. These are focussed on heat pump technologies and cover the installation, commissioning and maintenance of heat pump systems. Available at our national network of training centres, installers can find a location that is convenient for them.

However, to take full advantage of the opportunities, installers may need to achieve Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) accreditation through investment in further training and assessments. For example, new heat pump installations in England and Wales are only eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme if carried out by an installer with MCS certification. Our Woking Training Centre offers the Logic LCL accredited heat pump qualification in the installation and maintenance of air source heat pump systems, which counts towards MCS certification.

With the ongoing drive for the adoption of low carbon heating solutions and the current incentives making it easier for homeowners, there has never been a better time for heating professionals to expand their skills and help futureproof their business. Partnering with manufacturers who can offer the required training and support can help make acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills simple and straightforward.

ATYOUR SERVICE

As outside temperatures plummet at the time of writing, keeping heating and hot water systems running efficiently and effectively remains paramount. Of course, given recent rises in energy prices, end users will also have an eye on running costs, so will be keen to achieve the best of both worlds. This is where installers are able to step in, by ensuring their customers’ boilers are regularly serviced and maintained. Doing so will keep heating systems operating at optimum levels, without compromising on efficiency or cost-effectiveness.

The benefits of annual servicing are well-known – particularly in terms of preventing dust or debris from accumulating inside the boiler. Not only does this aid efficient running, it also helps reduce fuel consumption, in turn reducing emissions and energy costs.

No matter the age of a boiler, it is still a service engineer’s responsibility to make sure it is working safely and efficiently. Indeed, annual servicing is usually a necessity when fulfilling the requirements of most manufacturers’ warranties, which would otherwise be invalidated. Installers should remind customers to have their boilers serviced every year, so that this does not become an issue.

HEATING & RENEWABLES
16 JANUARY/FEBRUARY2023 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Sean Keleher, National Technical Manager at Navien, looks at the important role boiler servicing and maintenance has to play in ensuring heating and hot water systems run efficiently and economically.

Visual checks

During a gas boiler service, engineer should always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, as well as undertake a visual inspection and look for any signs or evidence of water leaks inside the casing. They should also check there are no small signs of distress or possible leaks, particularly on the diverter valves, plate-to-plate heat exchanger, main heat exchanger, pump and pipework.

Identifying any potential faults before they progress will help prevent them worsening and causing long-term damage. Engineers should also check that any expansion vessels have the required amount of pre-charged air inside them, to prevent any over-pressurisation issues and stop the pressure relief valve (PRV) from leaking due to loss of charge.

At Navien, we also recommend checking the inhibitor chemical levels in the central heating system are correct, to help provide ongoing protection against the potential build-up of corrosion and limescale. Should there be a magnetic system filter fitted, this should be isolated and cleaned out accordingly.

Flue readings

To ensure gas safety, flue gas analyser readings should be taken and compared with the manufacturer’s recommended levels in terms of the CO/CO2 combustion ratio for gas (in gas boilers this is less than 0.0040) to confirm the boiler is working to its optimum level of efficiency. All service details must then be recorded on the Benchmark Service and Interim Boiler Work Record in the boiler manual and left with the end user.

Both flue termination and the flue route must also be checked – the latter for its entire length (including the joints) from the boiler to the outside of the property. Any obstructions must be removed from the terminals and the flue should be safely fitted. In addition, the flue, ventilation and gas rates must be correct for efficient boiler combustion. Checking the flue integrity ensures it is functioning correctly – and that no harmful exhaust gases are escaping.

Check controls

Furthermore, engineers should doublecheck any controls are functioning correctly, both in terms of their mechanical operation and also in meeting the heating and hot water requirements of the property where they are fitted. Devices should be programmed to maximise efficiency, maintaining a comfortable temperature when required, without wasting energy.

Upon completing a service, engineers should also advise their customers on how to best maintain their boiler to keep it in top condition – including checking the pressure/temperature gauge daily, as well as making sure there are no leaks in the

pipework or condensate drain.

Modern boilers, such as Navien’s NCB700 ON (which can supply hot water for up to three showers simultaneously), make fault-finding and maintenance simple, thanks to a text-driven display which can run a series of test procedures for a full system diagnosis. An ‘error history’ option allows a list of the ten most recent errors – including error details and the simple countermeasures available – to be displayed on the screen, while the boiler manual explains any fault codes. Product-specific diagnostics will also be covered in manufacturers’ training courses.

So, as winter sets in and people rely more on their central heating systems across the country, it falls upon installers to ensure their customers’ boilers remain operational, cost-effective and efficient. By encouraging and conducting regular servicing, modern boilers will continue to perform at their optimum potential, without compromising performance.

VAILLANT TOMAKE HEAT PUMPS IN THE UK

To meet expected growth in the Heat Pump market, Vaillant has invested in a new manufacturing plant in the UK. PHPI joined the company at the official opening of the new facility in Derbyshire to find out more.

With the Future Homes Standard legislation coming into force in 2025, the UK heat pump market continues to see year on year growth. To support this demand, Vaillant has unveiled its new multi-million-pound heat pump production line at its headquarters in Belper, Derbyshire.

The new line was officially opened by John Forkin, MBE, MD of Marketing Derby, who was joined by guest, Pauline Latham MP for Mid Derbyshire. Marking a £4 million investment in the factory’s low carbon production capabilities, the company says the move reinforces its commitment to ensuring that all UK homes can be heated via the most effective technology for each UK property: be that a heat pump or boiler.

Vaillant has been producing heat pumps for the UK market since the early 2000s. This latest addition to the Belper plant furthers the company’s experience in developing heating technologies and follows a £55 million investment in its research and development facility at its headquarters in Remscheid in 2018.

The new heat pump line will be dedicated to producing Vaillant’s aroTHERM plus air-to-water heat pump. Launched in 2020, the aroTHERM plus is the first UK manufactured heat pump available in the market to use the natural refrigerant R290 with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of three. The unit is capable of achieving hot water flow temperatures of up to 75 degrees, meaning the water is stored in the cylinder at a useable temperature without the need for a backup heater.

No single solution

Giving the inaugural tour of the new heat pump line, Henrik Hansen, Managing Director of Vaillant Group UK & Ireland said: “We know there is no single solution when it comes to heating our homes in the UK as the breadth of property type is diverse. Heat pumps are a here and now technology that can offer decarbonisation

benefits, however the future is likely to be made up of a mix of heat pump, hybrid and boiler technologies. Ultimately, we want to help consumers feel in a position to make an informed choice about what will work for both their lifestyle and their property.

“Vaillant has seen many ‘firsts’ in its nearly 150-year history, and I’m delighted to now be announcing the commissioning of the company’s new heat pump manufacturing line in the UK. It’s a huge testament to our incredibly talented and dedicated team, and their vision and commitment to taking the business forward, that we are celebrating this latest milestone.

“Indeed, the widescale need to transition to low carbon is a once in a generation occurrence. The popularity of heat pump technology is growing at pace and is expected to continue to do so as homeowners become comfortable with the workings of lower carbon heating systems. This important move means we can help increase the availability of UK made heat

pumps and further our support for installers via supply, training and installation guidance, as they make the shift to new heating technologies.”

Diverse range

Joe Dunn, Plant Director UK at Vaillant added: “This is such an exciting time to be part of Vaillant in the UK as we diversify our product offering and grow our team to

meet the challenges and opportunities ahead. It is wonderful to see our aroTHERM Plus air-to-water heat pump production line now fully functional and producing products for the UK market, alongside our high-efficiency boilers.

“The successful diversification of our product offering, from our UK production facility, has been the result of significant investment in the Plant and our fantastic team vision and dedication. The whole team have worked exceptionally hard to install and commission this line, which is an absolute credit to them all. Many of our team retrained and gained new skills to ensure that we can fulfil the requirements for this new technology and can continue to deliver the outstanding quality associated with our products.”

DELIVERING NET ZERO –AN INSPECTOR’S VIEW

Inspectors will play a critical role in the future of the heating industry as we strive to achieve our net zero ambitions, as John Vinter, OFTEC’s Inspection Services Manager, explains.

The heating industry is going through a period of significant change as we begin the transition to renewable heating. It’s an exciting time and, while OFTEC’s commitment to liquid fuel and solid fuel heating remains, we’re seeing rapid growth in heat pump registrations.

To encourage and support this, we’ve launched our own heat pump training and assessments which are already proving popular. But we mustn’t overlook the important role of inspectors in delivering low carbon heating solutions to homes and businesses.

At OFTEC, we’re planning to expand our team of contracted regional inspectors and build on their skills and experience to meet the challenges of a changing industry and its low carbon future.

Most registered technicians are familiar with OFTEC Inspectors and the work they do. It’s perhaps not a glamourous role, but it’s an essential one for an organisation committed to ensuring high standards are met and encouraging continuous improvement.

Tech Savvy

While ‘Inspector’ is an old-fashioned term, the role is anything but – our inspectors

must be technology savvy, up to speed with the latest developments in the industry and audit to Government scheme requirements for the competent person scheme (CPS) and microgeneration certification scheme (MCS).

So, what does an inspection involve? As well as ensuring technicians know what to expect, the core element is measuring work consistently against industry standards such as building regulations, manufacturing instructions and technical books.

This is essential as inspectors are the eyes and ears of the industry. Their feedback helps improve technical books, training, and the information we publish for registered technicians. This will become increasingly important to maintain high standards for consumers as we see more low carbon heating solutions installed.

The heating industry has a history of always improving and OFTEC’s contract inspectors are very much at the forefront of this process.

If you’re interested in taking on the role of an inspector and helping to maintain high industry standards as we move towards net zero, please www.rdr.link/pan012

PUMP IT UP

Anew range of monobloc air source heat pumps to help improve energy efficiency and reduce reliance on natural gas within commercial buildings, has been launched by Ideal Heating. Available in six outputs and seven models (14kW, 14kW (single phase), 18kW, 26kW, 32kW, 50kW and 70kW), the ECOMOD range provides a minimum A++ Energy related Products (ErP) efficiency rating and high co-efficient of performance (COP) rating of up to 4.85. R32 refrigerant ensures a low global warming potential (GWP).

The heat pumps also include an inverter-controlled compressor that can control the building temperature based on specific requirements of the space, designed to further enhancing the efficiency of a building.

Low carbon system

Ideal ECOMOD heat pumps can be used alone or cascaded to meet the heating requirements of larger commercial buildings. They can also be installed alongside other solutions from the company, such as the EVOMAX 2 and the IMAX XTRA 2 commercial condensing boilers, to build a low carbon hybrid heating system.

To make installation and delivery easy the range has been designed to be light and compact. All products also come with a five-year warranty – when commissioned by Ideal Heating and noise levels of 68dB(A) –the equivalent of a quiet refrigerator.

Chris Caton, Product Director –Commercial Product Management for Ideal Heating, Groupe Atlantic UK, ROI & NA, said: “The ECOMOD range launches at an important time, as businesses accelerate their decarbonisation efforts to work towards net-zero targets, meet new standards for building regulations, and reduce their exposure to volatile energy prices. With high COPs our new heat pumps enable businesses to reduce a building’s carbon footprint and improve heating efficiency.

“What’s more, the range of outputs available means we can cater for many commercial buildings. For example, our 14kW single phase unit is suitable for sites without access to three phase electricity, such as care homes or community halls, while all units can be cascaded to meet the needs of larger spaces, making them a versatile and cost-effective choice.”

KEY BATHROOM TRENDS FOR

2023

As we move into 2023, homeowners are focusing on transforming their bathroom into a sanctuary space, with comfort and tranquillity key priorities. For installers, this means an interesting focus on both aesthetics and functionality tailored to the individual.

Technology

The use of smart technology around the house has continued to rise over the past decade. While the bathroom may have been somewhat late to the party – coming after the kitchen and living room – it is now becoming an increasingly ‘smart’ space. Over the past two years great strides have been made with bathroom friendly Bluetooth technology andsmart apps, which are now becoming more financially viable for homeowners.

De-misting mirrors and cabinets and Bluetooth/adjustable LED lighting are just a few ways in which technology is allowing individuals to control their sanctuary in new and exciting ways, creating that personal bespoke connection with their bathroom space.

Shower spaces are also blending more with technology now, with voice control functions and smart apps allowing for precise temperature controls at affordable pricing. A trend for 2023 could be homeowners putting aside a bigger budget than ever before for their ‘sanctuary’ space as it becomes possible to experiment with new technology.

Aesthetics

If 2022 was the year of the industrial theme, we are starting to see 2023 – or at least the first part of 2023 – as the emergence of earth tones and florals. Greens, browns and blues are now at the forefront of homeowners thinking, with brushed copper and brass showers complementing this.

Of course, the customer is always right, but the relationship each individual has with their bathroom space has been dictated by the industry for a long time now.

Darren Bedford, Sales Director at Lakes, discusses the key 2023 trends tradespeople should be aware of in order to meet customer demand
2023

However, what we have seen over the past few years, particularly in 2022, is a greater informed customer than ever before. Thanks to social media platforms such as Pinterest and TikTok, trends are being shared and picked up upon at a greater speed, with the individual then tailoring their wish list to suit their taste.

For installers and suppliers, this is leading to a collaborative revolution, with the potential for more clarity than ever before to work with and in turn, plenty of happy customers. It’s time to embrace this sea change and think outside of the box in 2023.

With regards to the shower spaces market and particularly ensuite or awkward spaces, consumers are looking at shower enclosures that feature increased glass and reduced metal to maximum the space they’re working with.

En-Suites and Cloakrooms are often compact and unique spaces by their

nature, so trends are always evolving to maximise their potential in keeping with a homeowner’s attention to detail.

A key way to ensure a shower enclosure looks sleek and prestige is choosing the right glass within an enclosure in order to give the sense of a clean and crisp look. Lakes’ Ambient and Wave ranges are ideal for this scenario.

For en-suite bathrooms, tailored shower enclosures have long been a recommended approach when tackling an awkward space. Using bespoke glass screens, shower enclosures or shower trays, while ensuring the sizing and accessories match the space and design required, is key to avoiding time spent rectifying or altering down the line.

We are seeing a move away from traditional chrome styles in favour of coloured finishes, matte black, and trendy tones. Shower enclosures have emerged as the focal point of the bathroom.

Consultation

Installers continue to be the biggest influence in what customers choose, however it feels as though the process is more collaborative than ever before. This is a trend that isn’t going to change.

A customer being informed and enthusiastic about their bathroom requirements is good news for installers –who are able to have a clearer idea as to what a good job looks like for their client.

Sustainability conversations are also going to be a key trend for 2023. We are already seeing sustainability rise up the priority table for customers, and installers are going to be expected to have a strong understanding of how a customer can make their bathroom as environmentally friendly as possible.

SERVICESSuppt

The role of a bathroom installer has changed over the years with today’s customers increasingly looking for an expert who can advise on design and product choice – while keeping abreast of the latest trends and product innovations.

Constant advances in technology and investment by manufacturers in product development mean that even those with decades of experience find there is always something to learn.

Manufacturer training offers a huge opportunity for installers to help plug any knowledge gaps and stand above the competition, getting the knowledge they need to enhance their technical skills and product knowledge to help offer customers that end-to-end service.

Empowering tradespeople

For aspiring installers or those starting a new career, manufacturer training is an important way to gain specific product knowledge and expand the expertise of a particular brand. When it comes to Bristan, we focus on working with installers by helping them better understand our products. The company offers a range of free training sessions and lunch-and-learn workshops which can be tailored to meet the needs of the team or individual. These sessions will cover areas like product development and efficient ways of working – installers can also meet others and exchange tips and ideas.

On Tap ambassadors

In fact, when it comes to exchanging ideas and tips, we set up our On Tap installer community which features exclusive training opportunities, as well as events and rewards. Installers who are signed up to On Tap will gain access to exclusive content from Bristan, get to know fellow experts in their community, and also have the opportunity to win free products, receive our support and attend industry events. There is a dedicated Facebook page where installers regularly post an installation conundrum – from helping identify a mystery part to asking in-depth questions. This page is managed by our team of five On Tap ambassadors, who have more than 105 years of experience between them, and often respond to posts within minutes.

Speaking from his own experience of the industry, professional installer of 43 years and Bristan On Tap ambassador, Andy Steer added: “My main piece of advice for someone starting out in the industry would be to move with it, go with the flow and take every opportunity to keep developing your knowledge. Also, learn from your mistakes! When I was an apprentice, I changed a washer in a tap, then couldn’t get any water out of it. When I looked underneath, I saw that it wasn’t connected to any pipework. I was 15 or 16 at the time, but I haven’t forgotten it and I’ve certainly never made the same mistake again.”

Manufacturer support

However, no matter how much training an individual takes, sometimes even the most experienced installer can arrive at a new job and realise they aren’t aware of how to fulfil a specific task. Manufacturers must be able to recognise this and evolve their support to ensure installers are aware of the rapidly changing legislation and development of technology, keeping skillsets up-to-date.

To assist in times like this, we offer a series of how-to guides on our website to ensure that installers always have our support at their fingertips. On top of this, the rollout of our new Visual Remote Assistant (VRA) technology allows our customer service team to access a live stream and provide instant product identification and installation advice.

DIGITAL DELIVERY

QRising fuel costs have left many plumbers and heating engineers looking for ways to manage vehicle use more effectively. Can the ABAX solution help achieve this?

The ABAX solution works in a number of ways, but ultimately, it providers business with total visibility over a fleet from driving styles, route planning and even idling. Of course, it offers theft protection and aids recovery should a vehicle be stolen – but when it comes to effectively managing vehicles and driving down costs, we talk about the following:

Idling

The cold weather is now upon us – which means idling time starts to creep up.

Sitting in a stationary car with the engine running wastes around 500ml every 15 mins, equating to two litres per hour. The monetary impact of this for just one vehicle alone adds up, but when it's a fleet of three or more, the costs start to rise.

Idling will also reduce business capacity and add to your repair and maintenance costs. Fuel isn't fully combusted when a vehicle idles, and residue builds up, damaging exhaust systems and engine components – leading to costly vehicle downtime and repairs.

Driving styles

Our customer data demonstrates that bad driving impacts fuel efficiency by almost 20%.

Common occurrences like speeding, sudden acceleration and harsh braking don't just jeopardise the safety of other road users; they vastly increase fuel consumption due to air and tyre rolling resistance.

Reducing speed to 50 or lower and using gradual acceleration and braking can reduce fuel consumption by as little as 7% and as much as 14%.

Harsh braking has an enormous impact on tyre wear and tear and reduces the lifespan of brakes and brake pads, requiring more frequent changes. It will come as no surprise that poor driving leads to a higher number of accidents, with the cost of an accident being 36 times higher than the cost of a basic repair – driving style is a severe cause of concern for businesses operating vehicles.

Our Driver Behaviour feature is used by hundreds of businesses to monitor driving styles, spot opportunity for training, reducing fuel bills, vehicle wear and tear and protect brand image in the long term.

Midtech Building Services Ltd, share the benefits they have experienced since installing the ABAX system: “Since having ABAX onboard, the lads have drastically changed their driving behaviour. We use the ABAX service notification to keep track

of mileage, and we can also identify who is responsible for a parking or speeding ticket if they are issued to one of our vehicles.”

Route Planning

Route planning allows you to more effectively plan the days work by using a map feature, reducing unnecessary trips. It also means that you have a one-pane view of all the vehicles in your fleet at any one time – should an urgent job come in – you can easily see who is closest without wasting time making phone calls to see who can be assigned.

fuel and servicing, is greener and has fewer accidents.

ABAX Driving Behaviour uses the AI technology to create an average score based on all company drivers and UK fleet average. The key elements deciding the score, where 100 is top, are acceleration, harsh braking, harsh turns right, left and idling. The score will show wherever the driver is below or above the average for your company which creates a great way to increase employee engagement through gamification.

We like to think of it as ‘proactive’ theft prevention, giving you peace of mind that should tools be stolen, you can be alerted, view the location on the ABAX App and increase chances of recovering items.

But further to this, lost and misplaced tools can be just as much as a time-drain on a business, with the average number of hours spent locating lost tools amounting to 38 hours each year. With the use of ABAX mini and the ABAX app, that wasted time can be eliminated.

Q How does the mini2 tracking system work and how could a plumber use the solution?

ABAX Driver ID is an essential service for companies that operate vehicles shared by multiple drivers. By identifying which driver is in what vehicle, ABAX Driver ID will help you get the additional control, accountability and compliance you need to manage your pool fleet

● business mileage logs for your drivers and pool fleet are paperless, compliant and auditable ● reduced administrative workload with digital timesheets and working hours for each driver

● individual driver behaviour monitoring in your shared vehicles to promote safe and efficient driving

As one of ABAX customers, Spirotech, says: “ABAX solutions allows us to monitor driving behaviour to ensure our vehicles are being driven safely and legally. Matching up the timesheets alongside the tracking information helps us to cross reference any discrepancies. We also use the service notification feature which adds to the time efficiency and safety of the business and our vehicles.”

Driver ID and Vehicle Tracking go hand in hand with Driving Behaviour – which is our solution to track how your drivers are navigating the road, reducing overall risk and ensuring company driving policies are being adhered. A fleet that is driven efficiently and safely costs less overall in

A study by Simply Business reports that one in three tradespeople have fallen victim to tool theft and they suggest that on average, this results in £3,005 in lost earnings and replacement tools alone. Our ABAX Mini solution is our smallest tracking, designed specifically to be used across all kinds of tools and non-powered assets.

The ABAX MINI2 is a small and lightweight bluetooth tracker that communicates with all IoT gateways in the ABAX global network as well with the ABAX mobile apps for drivers and administrators. The size of these small tracking devices makes them perfect to be fitted on expensive small equipment such as power tools, or in kit bags. Because they use alternative technology to traditional GSM cellular network connectivity, mini tracking devices are not only discreet and difficult for thieves to visually detect but are often immune to ‘jammers’ reportedly used by criminals.

The transparency and visibility our system provides can be directly passed onto customers. Being able to provide accurate arrival times or proactively alert them to changes in the schedule, or easily book in urgent jobs can turn customers into loyal brand advocates that refer your business.

Our customer Red Van Plumbing said: “It is a tool that allows us to find out exactly where our engineers are without having to interrupt them while they are working. If a customer calls to find out where the engineer is, we can use the tracker to give them an accurate time of arrival without having to contact the engineer and calling the customer back.”

Thermography has established itself as a valuable diagnostic tool in many industrial maintenance sectors, and now with the availability of lower cost thermal imaging cameras, many heating contractors are taking advantage of the technical and commercial benefits that owning a thermal imaging camera can bring to their business.

Pipework runs

The most obvious use of a thermal imaging camera is for the detection of hot water pipework runs throughout a building and the subsequent detection of leaks within such pipework. Modern thermal imaging cameras such as the testo 868s can detect temperature differences as small as 0.1°C and it’s this high sensitivity to temperature differences that allows the detection of pipework even though it may be buried in several inches of screed material.

Pipework buried in screed can transfer heat through conduction, and this heat signature can be detected on the flooring surface. Just being able to trace any hot water pipework via this method is a major benefit for some heating contractors when being asked to locate faults in a property

this is where the high sensitivity of the camera comes into play, as typically normal pipework runs will show up as very ‘linear’ lines of higher

temperature than the background.

Potential leaks tend to show up as areas that are distinctly hotter than either the background or the pipework run, and usually it is possible to see this area ‘grow’ in size due to the hot water being pushed out into the screed material. Sometimes it can be necessary to create a greater temperature difference to really highlight the possible leak site, and these conditions can often be generated by making the property as cold as possible by opening all windows/doors for a time and then switching the heating system on, with a high temperature setting from cold.

One subject often discussed regarding thermal imaging is about detection of cold water pipework and this has some unique issues, as in most cases the temperature of any pipework carrying cold water will be at the same ‘background’ temperature as the floor – this won’t allow a sufficient temperature difference for a thermal imaging camera to detect directly.

However, the testo 868s can detect cold water when it has penetrated through to the screed or flooring material, as what happens is that the area that is damp can be detected through evaporative cooling effect, especially if you can introduce some airflow across the suspected area by opening a door or window.

868s

Designed as a rugged everyday tool for contractors to use, the testo 868s cameras have a 160 x 120-pixel Infra-red detector and a ‘Super resolution‘ feature to boost image quality to 320 x 240 pixels, this means for the user the ability to capture an image that comprises of 76,800 measurement points ensuring that all the detail within the subject is captured in a high-resolution image which can then effectively be used to diagnose the issue at hand.

The 868s also comes with the extra functionality of connectivity to a smartphone or tablet device via a free to download app, allowing users to take these high-resolution images and directly construct reports ‘on-site’ via their smartphone or tablet device which can then be emailed to clients to highlight problems found.

The Testo 868s thermal imaging cameras enable heating contractors to quickly diagnose potential areas or problems and record the images for future use.

SPEND OR SAVE…

No two months are ever the same and while sometimes profits are good, at other times they might not be. And when the economy is as turbulent as it is now, with warnings of recession, and inflation and fuel bills rising, just ‘hoping’ for a good month can look like a risky proposition.

The temptation is to spend as little as possible and to consider outgoings as a drain on net profit. While this might sound right, in reality it can be short-sighted. Because sometimes to make money, you have to spend money. You can’t just sit around and expect the cash to flow into your bank account, you have to earn it, and to do that you have to keep jobs coming in and keep completing them to the best of your ability. That said, sometimes cutting back is also the right thing to do.

So, how do you know when to spend and when to save? And how do you know what’s okay to splash the cash on, and what’s an extravagance?

Only you can answer that question, as only you understand the state of your business and your finances, but to help you decide, here’s a few things I always find helpful to remember.

Know your overheads

There are three types of overheads:

Fixed: These are non-negotiable and must be covered in order to stay in business. These include rent, insurance, phone, petrol, etc.

Variable: these can change month-to-month depending on what you have on. They include advertising, sales activity, tools and kit for a job, and staffing costs if you are employing contractors. While they’re variable, you haven’t much control over this. If you have a job booked in, you need to have the right kit and the right staff. But you can get a rough idea of how much these will be by looking at previous years and seeing when your busy periods are.

Optional: These are the overheads you have most control over. They’re the overheads you don’t need to spend money on but want to. A new carpet for the office, perhaps. A better website. Replacement tools. An office support person. Health and safety improvements. Business mentoring and coaching. The list

is endless. But which will help your business, especially when times are looking tough, and which are a luxury?

To decide, consider the following:

Cash flow

If you’re consistently and healthily in profit and know what to do to continue the growth of your business, then it’s safe to say you’re in the fortunate position of being able to spend money on what you want.

Net profit

If when looking at your net profits you find you’re quite far behind where you’d like to be, and you don’t understand why, then hold fire. Saving money sounds like the safest bet in this scenario.

Debt levels

Is your business carrying a lot of debt? If you have a medium-to-high level of borrowing, then resist the urge to spend. Use your cash to pay off your debt to get your balance books in a healthier state.

Lead generation

Do you find you don’t have enough work coming in? If that’s the case and you have a

When to spend money and when to save can be a difficult decision when running your own business, says James Chillman, UK Country Manager for Fergus.

marketing plan worked out to improve things, then invest in this to make it work. If you don’t have a marketing plan in place, take the time to craft one, either yourself or by hiring someone to help. Then spend the money to put it to work and generate leads.

Efficiency expenditure

Are you and your team working as efficiently as you could be, or are you wasting time and money? Perhaps you have to share a vehicle to get to jobs which are some distance from each other. Or maybe you could share one vehicle to get to two different jobs which are close by, but are instead using two vehicles. Or does your equipment keep breaking down? Or do teams have to share tools, and shuttle them to and from different jobs?

First, you need to think clearly about what your inefficiencies are, and plan accordingly. If car sharing makes sense, then leave the second vehicle at home. If not, and you should have two vehicles when you only have one, perhaps lease or buy a second vehicle. Getting equipment which keeps breaking down fixed, or buying a few more tools, might well be a wise investment.

Time of year

Study your accounts from previous years to get an understanding of when you're busier, and when you find times are leaner. Christmas is often a time when customers are slow to pay invoices, while January is often when few people get tradespeople in. Knowing when it’s usually a slow period for your business will help you plan for when best to save rather than spend.

A CUT ABOVE…

The CoBolt range features 18 different tools, and with sizes ranging from 160, 200 through to 250mm there is a tool to suit a myriad of tough cutting applications. In general use, the CoBolt range can be used for cutting nails and screws or for cutting wire mesh or fencing.

The 71 01 200 Knipex CoBolt Compact Bolt Cutter is a small tool designed to makes a big impact. Thanks to its practical size of 200mm and low weight (less than 400g) the cutter has been developed to meet demanding situations – the company says they master piano wire up to a diameter of 3.6mm reliably. The tool can also be used on bolts, nails and rivets up to a diameter of 6mm (in the case of soft material).

Economic position

The proverbial elephant in the room at the moment is the economy. Post-Covid and with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine impacting on everything from fuel costs to the supply chain, times are undoubtedly tough. There’s a cost-of-living crisis and customers are feeling it. This will inevitably have some impact on your business. If you need advice, speak to your accountant or financial adviser.

With all the above in mind, it’s important to remember that the only person who truly knows your business and the health of your balance sheet is you. If you consider all the factors outlined above, and apply them to your situation, hopefully they’ll help you to decide if it’s worth spending money or not.

This high cutting performance is the result of long-standing engineering experience and thanks to precision cutting edges made of chrome-vanadium high performance steel which are induction hardened for cutting-edge hardness. The efficient lever action mechanism has been designed to ensure a favourable lever ratio with simultaneously low friction. Knipex says the CoBolt reinforces the hand force used to grip the handles 35 times over.

Different tools for different uses

The 71 42 200 Knipex CoBolt Compact Bolt Cutter, meanwhile, is an example of how the range has been adapted for different professional uses. With its multi-component grips, the 71 42 200 version is without a collar – for better handling and easier transport. An opening spring and locking device are integrated in the handles and it features a recess for easier cutting of thicker wires.

ADDRESSING ROGUE TRADERS IN COST CUTTING EFFORTS

Energy costs in the UK are expected to be among the highest ever beginning in April, when the price cap will see the average UK household paying annual energy costs of £3,000. As a result, many householders are looking for ways to make savings. From a water-saving perspective, this is where installers of plumbing and heating systems can add value.

Efficient solutions

Engineers should speak to consumers about installing newer systems when their current showers, taps and toilet cisterns near the end of their useful lifetimes. There are a variety of new technologies on the market, including low-flow showers and water-saving toilets. Low-flow showerheads reduce the volume of water heated and subsequently lower water and energy bills.

In the current crisis, system efficiency can make a huge difference. The CIPHE recommends ongoing servicing after installation to boost efficiency. A full home health check will ensure that all components are functioning properly and, in certain circumstances, identify issues which require remedying. Regular system inspections can also assist in extending the lifespan of appliances, ultimately saving homeowners both time and money on replacements.

Customer concerns

Unavoidably, some systems will still require repairs over the coming months. This is where rogue traders are an increasingly insidious threat, particularly as many consumers may be tempted to choose a cheaper tradesperson.

Deceptive tradespeople frequently prey on the most defenceless, such as elderly persons who are perhaps less savvy when it comes to online methods of finding a reputable tradesperson.

The cost-of-living crisis means plumbing and heating installers have an important part to play in helping customers identify money-saving methods. Unfortunately, it also creates the perfect climate for unscrupulous tradespersons to operate. Kevin Wellman, of the CIPHE, discusses the importance of quality professionals proving their competence to prevent consumers from opting for dishonest traders in 2023.

When the CIPHE conducted a survey of British householders, more than three-quarters expressed concern about unintentionally choosing a rogue trader over a competent engineer. When considering the risks of substandard installation and the associated costs, these worries are not without merit. The average cost of rectifying poor workmanship is close to £2,000, proving that buying cheap often means buying twice. Therefore, homeowners must source quality engineers.

The CIPHE recognises that relevant extensive experience can be the basis for a plumbing and heating career. However, this extensive practical experience must be supported by references or, where necessary, an assessment through a Professional Standards Inspector before CIPHE membership can be awarded. Having the backing of CIPHE membership is one of the ultimate recognitions of competency. The benefits of this can extend to individuals being able to showcase their professionalism to prospective customers.

Closing thoughts

Quality and qualifications

According to the CIPHE’s survey findings, customers spend longer than an hour researching and choosing a plumbing and heating engineer. Proof of competence and professionalism is therefore vital. Consumers are urged to ask for and check the credentials of those they employ to undertake work in their home – something that’s critical in order to avoid predatory traders.

User safety must remain a top priority when it comes to installation and maintenance of plumbing and heating systems. The CIPHE strives to promote quality, professionalism and competence and by doing so, strengthens clients’ trust in the plumbing and heating industry. To increase consumer confidence, engineers should provide proof of competence to current and potential clients.

HAMWORTHY INTRODUCES NEW HEAT PUMP RANGE

Hamworthy Heating has launched its first ever monobloc air source heat pump range, the Tyneham, which the company says has been designed to meet UK efficiency requirements in commercial applications.

The move is in line with the latest uplift of Building Regulations’ ‘Conservation of fuel and power: Approved Document L’, which states that non-domestic buildings should be moving to low-carbon heat sources.

Heat pumps extract heat energy from the environment and upgrade it to heat for central heating and hot water requirements. By taking energy from the

air via a refrigerant cycle they generate heat without releasing carbon emissions.

The company says its new Tyneham heat pump range is one of the smallest commercial heat pumps on the market, featuring a co-efficiency of performance (COP) rating of up to 4.85, to provide efficient, low carbon heating.

Super seven

The seven models in the range boast six nominal outputs of between 14 to 70kW, which can also be cascaded to achieve higher outputs in larger installations.

Incorporating inverter controller compressor to accurately match the heat demand, RG32 refrigerant also maximises low global warming potential.

Quiet running and featuring a monobloc design, all components are housed in the main unit which has been designed to be compact and lightweight for ease of commission and installation.

Available to purchase with variable options such as, flexible hoses, anti-vibration feet, externally mounted control units, and single-phase units, Tyneham air source heat pumps can also be combined with Hamworthy modular boilers for a hybrid heating system.

Kevin Potter, Hamworthy Regional Sales Manager commented: “With decades of commercial heating experience behind us, we understand the importance and value in finding ecologically efficient solutions, now more than ever. As heat pumps play an important role, we’re proud to be adding our new Tyneham range to our innovative product offering.”

Hamworthy Heating has a strong reputation in the commercial heating and hot water market with technical and after sales support. Designed with ease of service in mind, Hamworthy Heating also provide a range of servicing options and training to ensure users get the most out of products.

STAY WARM THIS WINTER WITH MAKITA

Makita has released its latest heated jacket, helping to protect wearers against the elements. Powered by the company’s 18V LXT battery, the new jacket is designed for cold, harsh jobsite environments, or for outdoor leisure in the cold winter months.

The latest DCJ205 heated jacket has five heating zones so users benefit from continuous warmth in the chest and back areas whilst also having control over the three heat level settings. The 18V LXT battery offers long continuous runtimes, with a fully charged battery lasting seven hours on the highest setting, 11 hours on medium, and 29 hours on low (when powered by the BL1850B 5.0Ah battery). Customers can use existing batteries or purchase one with the DCJ205 as a kit.

The jacket’s olive coloured, polyester outer lining makes it waterproof and windproof, whilst the inner fleece lining helps keep the user warm and comfortable even with the power off. Additionally, it is fully washable and dryable, so cleaning is easy and hassle-free without damaging its heating capabilities.

It is also equipped with a two-way zip, offering more flexibility when wearing a tool belt, as well as six pockets. The jacket is available in a range of sizes, catering to sizes M to 2XL.

Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita, said: ‘We are very excited to be releasing our new LXT heated jacket. We understand the harsh conditions that our customers are faced with during the colder months, and have designed this product with comfort, durability and style in mind. Even without the aid of our LXT battery, this jacket is an excellent product that will prove invaluable both on site but also in other outdoors environments.”

VIESSMANN INCREASES OUTPUT RANGE FOR VITODENS COMBI

Viessmann has added a new 35kW output model to its Vitodens 050-W range. The new addition provides domestic hot water (DHW) output from 2.9 to 35kW and heating output from 3.2 to 32kW, with a modulation range of 1:10 for increased seasonal efficiency.

The Vitodens’ MatriX-Plus burner with Lambda Pro combustion-control system helps to deliver high efficiency and low emissions, earning the boiler an ERP efficiency rating of 92% (Class A).

The boiler features WiFi inside, which allows ‘out-of-the-box’ commissioning via the company’s ViGuide Mobile app. The homeowner receives full control of their heating using the ViCare app.

Specification and retrofit Launched in the UK in 2015, the Vitodens 050-W gas-fired condensing boiler has a guided commissioning process, quiet operation, and is designed for ease of maintenance.

“The new higher output and increased flow rate offer a very attractive boiler at a mass-market price, for installers and customers looking for Viessmann quality and reliability, and offer increased hot water comfort for 1-bathroom properties,” said Viessmann Marketing Director Darren McMahon. “It’s ideal for both the specification sector and retrofit installations.”

Weather compensation

As with other models in the Vitodens range, weather compensation can be incorporated with the addition of an outdoor sensor, as the circuit board already incorporates the software for weather compensation operation.

In addition, due to the in-built WiFi, the boiler can be connected to the ViCare app when the boiler is installed with third party controls. This will ensure the boiler receives software updates, similarly to other connected devices, enabling fault diagnostics for the boiler and aiding the

ongoing service and maintenance regime.

The boiler is certified for a blend of 20% hydrogen and up to 20 metres for horizontal and vertical flue systems.

The Vitodens 050-W comes with a three-year guarantee as standard, increasing to seven years if fitted by a Viessmann-trained installer and registered on the Viessmann Installer Portal, with an option to increase to 10 years.

NAVIEN INTRODUCES SMART SERVICE TOOLKIT

Navien has introduced a Smart Service Toolkit, a new level of diagnostic technology. Compatible with the company’s NCB700 ON, NCB500 ON and NCB300 gas boilers and LCB700 Blue Flame oil boilers, the Smart Service Toolkit is designed to make it simpler for installers to conduct servicing and maintenance.

The device monitors and diagnoses customers’ boilers based on live data. Navien’s technical engineers can view this data offsite and advise installers onsite how to deal with any issues according to a boiler’s status.

The Smart Service Toolkit can also be used to check product information, error logs and service history – as well as customise settings according to a user’s needs and the property type. The device is connected to the boiler via a supplied cable, while also linking to a dedicated smartphone app via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Both data and firmware are transferred via the app, which is constantly communicating with Navien’s servers to provide the latest updates.

Installers can use the Smart Service Toolkit app to view a technical graph, enabling a visual assessment of a boiler’s status. The unit also allows each sensor to be checked and monitored. In addition, settings can be customised according to each user’s needs and property type, including adjusting a boiler’s parameters, as well as downloading and updating to the latest firmware for each end user on an individual basis.

Commenting on the new device, Sean Keleher, National Technical Manager at Navien, said: “The Navien Smart Service Toolkit now makes it even easier for installers to conduct boiler servicing and maintenance, thanks to its accurate monitoring and diagnostic capabilities. Because it uses live data, it is always up to date with the latest product information; plus, the ability to customise settings according to an individual’s needs and property type ensures maximum levels of efficiency and comfort.”
