The year ahead Covid-19 has knocked us all for six, and continues to do so, although positive news about a vaccine is cause for some optimism that in 2021 we might return to some level of normality. A lockdown which lasted many months and brought with it a suppression of economic activity has certainly impacted on us all. However, as key workers heating and plumbing firms have been able to continue to operate – and some we spoke with at the beginning of the heating season reported it being a very busy time. 2021 may well follow suit. Larger projects may return as might some necessary building maintenance. Many home improvement projects which require a qualified professional may also see a strong comeback with some homeowners having unused ‘holiday money’ to put into home renovations, while others may use stamp duty savings to undertake refurbishments. In this issue we take a look at Bathroom Renovation, which might be a strong area for plumbers in the coming months, highlighting some of the trends and the solutions available. Another area we will be keeping an eye on this year is the growing use of ‘smart’ solutions within the home. With millions of us relying on laptops and tablets to stay in contact through 2020 even the tech-phobic have begun to be more comfortable with the digital world. Consequently there may now be a broader uptake in digital controls for the home – from heating systems to showers. Plus, in the coming months and years, technological advances and government policy will increasingly impact the sector. Although traditional heating systems retain dominance, consideration of lower carbon alternatives is now increasingly occurring. The Government’s announcement of a Green Industrial Revolution last November directly referenced domestic heating, Hydrogen and Heat Pumps – and it is likely that demand for low-carbon heating solutions will increase. You can read more about the announcement on page 10. For now we must all remain conscientious and keep ourselves, our colleagues and our customers safe. However, we should also plan for the future – ready to offer the solutions and services that customers require in the months, and years, ahead.

“there may now be a broader uptake in digital controls for the home – from heating systems to showers.”

WHAT CUSTOMERS TOP LOCKDOWN PLUMBING QUESTIONS WANT... WaterSafe, the UK register of approved plumbers, has revealed the measures customers most want to see from their plumber, or other tradespeople, to help them feel safe when having work done during the pandemic. Its survey found that the top priorities for UK homeowners are the removal of all waste and belongings at the end of the job (64%), social distancing with customers (61%), wearing a mask/face covering (60%) and, using hand sanitiser and clean surfaces after working on them (55%). Other precautions they valued were washing hands (54%), wearing gloves (46%), maintaining social distancing with colleagues (41%) and discussing safety precautions with customers prior to the job (38%). About a third would also like to swerve kettle duties and sharing mugs and would prefer plumbers to bring their own drinks. Julie Spinks, Director of WaterSafe, said: “Plumbers are critical workers and, not surprisingly, our survey results show demand for plumbers during the pandemic remains high, with one in five UK homeowners having used the services of a plumber since the start of the pandemic. Of these only about a fifth preferred to be offered advice over the phone or by video call. “So it’s really important plumbers, and other trades, working in customers’ homes follow the latest government guidance to reduce Covid-19 risks for everyone.”

Data reveals what DIY tips the UK were searching for while in lockdown. 'How to change a tap' and ‘how to deal with leaking taps’ were among most searched for DIY plumbing questions during lockdown, according to analysis by national property agent network Martin&Co. The company looked at the biggest DIY search terms during summer 2020 to reveal the most searched for DIY questions, including those on plumbing. It revealed the top search during lockdown was ‘How to unblock a toilet’ followed by ‘How to unblock a sink’. Rounding out the top three was ‘How to bleed a radiator’. Also in the top five, according to Martin&Co, were, ‘How to fix a dripping tap’ and ‘How to remove a radiator’. To see the full list of DIY trends throughout lockdown

BAXI COMMITS TO ‘CLEANER, GREENER’ PRODUCTS Baxi Heating UK and Ireland has announced it is looking to “revolutionise” the way we heat homes and buildings. The announcement coincided with the Prime Minister’s 10-point plan for a Green Industrial Revolution (find out more on page 10). The company, which is part of BDR Thermea Group, has committed to a portfolio of cleaner, greener products, that will work with low carbon fuels by 2025, either directly such as hydrogen boilers, heat pumps, smart electric water heating and heat networks or hydrogen ready boilers than can be converted after installation. Karen Boswell OBE, recently appointed Managing Director of Baxi Heating, said: “Our pledge is to be carbon neutral in all our operations by 2030, and to lead the phase-out of carbon intensive heating by ensuring every product we make from 2025 will work with low carbon energy”.

TIME TO TAKE-ON AN APPRENTICE? JTL, a national training provider for heating and plumbing apprenticeships, has launched a campaign to urge employers to take on an apprentice. Its new campaign ‘Keep the skills alive and the lights shining’ encourages employers to utilise the cash incentive being offered by the government and take on an apprentice before the 31st January 2021. An incentive payment of £2,000 is being offering to employers who hire an apprentice between the age of 16-24 years old, while £1,500 will be paid when an apprentice aged 25 and over is taken on. Employers will need to set up an account on The Apprenticeship Service portal in order to access funding, which JTL can assist with. For help and advice www.rdr.link/pw002

SCOTTISH ‘GRANDFATHER RIGHTS’ RUNNING OUT Plumbing and heating professionals in Scotland who are operating under historic grading “Grandfather Rights” are being warned that time is running out for them if they want to retain their Grading Card. Significant changes are being made to the Scottish and Northern Ireland Joint Industry Board (SNIJIB) Grading Card Scheme with effect from January 1, 2021. The changes mean that plumbers will not be able to renew their SNIJIB/CSCS Plumber, Advanced Plumber and Technician Plumber cards without being able to show that they have attained an SVQ Level 3 Certificate or a City and Guilds Certificate in plumbing.

‘HYDROGEN-READY’ BOILER DEFINED The Heating and Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) has created a definition of what is a Hydrogen-Ready boiler. The technical definition has been developed by the heating industry to ensure safe products are made ready for a switch from natural gas to hydrogen, with a pledge that the conversion takes less than an hour to complete by a gas safe competent installer, using manufacturer’s certificated conversion kits. HHIC Director, Stewart Clements, said: “Converting the gas grid to hydrogen requires a boiler than can be converted. Industry has agreed how this should be done, to minimise the cost and impact. “This definition is necessary should the Government mandate that only Hydrogen-Ready boilers are installed in UK homes from 2025, something called for by the CBI. As an industry, we have created the definition that the Government can easily adopt and use it in future legislation.”

SMES EXPAND BUSINESS IN LIGHT OF COVID-19 Yell Business has released new research into how small businesses have adapted to survive in light of Covid-19. The study reveals the scale of the challenge business owners have faced in recent months with 90% of tradespeople surveyed introducing a new service because of Covid-19. Of those new services 41% started taking online bookings, 40% started doing online video consultations and 27% introduced contactless payment systems. Claire Miles, Chief Executive Officer of Yell commented: “Our research highlights not only the sheer adaptability of tradespeople but also their ability to find the right way to communicate change to their existing and potential customers.” For details and advice from Yell business

Band of Builders

BAND OF BUILDERS LAUNCHES HARDSHIP FUND National charity Band of Builders has launched a new hardship fund to help tradesmen and women affected by the ongoing coronavirus crisis. BoB, as the charity is affectionately known in the construction world, has committed to match every £1 donated by the public all the way up to £10,000, creating an overall fund of £20,000. The cash will then be used to award grants of between £250 and £500 to tradespeople who have been left in financial difficulties thanks to COVID. Band of Builders Chairman Gavin Crane said: “We want this fund to provide small but vital grants to those who need it most at this difficult time. It may not seem like much, but for some people a grant of £250 could make all the difference and help them get through the month.” The charity’s next project will help father-of-four Robert Lamb, a surveyor left paralysed after a fall at home. BoB will be carrying out adaptations to Robert’s home in Solihull, where he lives with his three sons, to make it safe and accessible when he returns home from hospital. For more details

SPECIAL REPORT | Green Industrial Revolution

GREEN

MILESTONE Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a Green Industrial Revolution with a new ten point plan.

I

n November the Prime Minister set out a 10-point plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, designed to create and support up to 250,000 British jobs. The wide ranging plan covers clean energy, transport, nature and innovative technologies. Two points relate directly to the heating sector, those covering hydrogen and home heating. On hydrogen the plan seeks to, “develop the first town heated entirely by hydrogen by the end of the decade,” whilst for homes it states, “a target to install 600,000 heat pumps every year by 2028.” Associations

and manufacturers from across the sector were quick to respond to the news. Graham Wright, Chairman of the Heat Pump Association (HPA), said: “There is no ‘silver bullet’ solution to the decarbonisation of heat. However, as the Committee on Climate Change has already stressed, heat pumps are an established technology and can provide one of the solutions for an urgent and widespread shift to low carbon heating and must be supported immediately.” Meanwhile, Ian Rippin, CEO of MCS – the national standards organisation for renewables – said: “Heat pumps are a

proven, safe technology for making our homes more energy efficient. We believe that every consumer should have access to quality renewable energy solutions, delivered to high installation standards.”

Sector roadmap Noting that the new plan sets out a ‘clear roadmap’ for the heating market over the coming years, LG’s Heating Manager for the UK and Ireland, Andy Hooper, said: “The PM pledged to install 600,000 heat pumps every year by 2028. Make no mistake, this is a massive win for installers and manufacturers alike, but it’s an ambitious plan that has to be approached carefully.” Simon Lomax, CEO of the Kensa Group, commented: “The target of 600,000 heat pumps per year is encouraging but it is now vital that this Government quickly introduce policies that will allow the supply chain to maintain recent momentum.” Commenting on the need to develop further skills to meet the new targets, Iain Bevan, Commercial Manager – Heating & Renewables at Daikin UK noted: “There is a huge opportunity for green jobs as we scale up the installation of renewable heating systems. For the heat pump market alone, we estimate around 17,000 new installers are required to meet the expected demand within the next ten years.”

Green Homes Grant Extended Rural homes A note of concern was struck by the Liquid Fuels trade association (UKIFDA) who called on the government to introduce more choice into Net Zero Home Heating. Guy Pulham, UKIFDA Chief Executive, said: “Today’s announcement and focus on heat pumps doesn’t take into account the high cost to install heat pumps in the majority of UK homes who have EPC ratings of D or below. “Heat Pumps may be ideal for new homes but for many of our Members customers’ homes which are rural homes they are not suitable. These homes generally are built pre-1919 and have poor insulation, making them very difficult to make changes to, particularly for insulation. They may also require further upgrades to the electricity supply to the property as the supply simply isn’t consistent enough to run a heat pump comfortably especially as other demands are made on electricity supplies such as vehicle charging.”

The Prime Minister has also announced that the Green Homes Grant will be extended to the end of March 2022. The scheme funds up to two thirds of the cost of green home improvements up to £5,000. Heat pumps are included in the scheme, gas boilers are not. Minister for Climate Change Lord Callanan said: ”Today’s announcement means an extra year to take advantage of this new scheme, helping households and tradespeople who can plan their workload and create new jobs in their communities.” Reacting to the news Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the Federation of Master Builders, said: “The extension of the Green Homes Grant for another year is very positive news. This will give the reassurance needed to the building industry to invest in the scheme. Our existing homes contribute 20% of all our carbon emissions and consume 35% of our energy.” To find out more about the Green Homes Grant

Role for hydrogen Carl Arntzen, CEO of Worcester Bosch joined the Prime Minister as he launched his Ten Point Plan and was one of twenty business leaders asked to join in a roundtable debate following the announcement. Carl commented: “The 10 steps set out by the Prime Minister are bold and we are delighted to see that hydrogen will play a key role in delivering them. The investment of £500 million in

Hydrogen is a positive start and can help to reduce carbon emissions significantly – particularly in the way that we heat our homes, power our transport (especially heavy transport) and meet the challenges of increasing electricity demand through decentralised power supply.” To find out more about the 10 point plan for a Green Industrial Revolution www.rdr.link/pw008

BATHROOM RENOVATION

Relax and Recover Following a survey commissioned in June 2020 on consumer showering habits Grohe’s UK Training Manager, Adam Logan, joins us to dissect some of the latest showering trends and what installers can expect to see gracing bathroom projects this year.

014_PHPI_JANFEB21_Layout 1 17/12/2020 22:09 Page 15

Q

Which bathroom trends are currently shaping customer demand?

Formerly considered as just a functional space, the bathroom has become increasingly considered as a tranquil retreat. The results of our showers survey in June highlighted that almost half of us are now viewing the bathroom as a space for wellbeing, relaxation and recovery whilst 40% also agreed that the bathroom is a place of isolation where they go to seek some time alone. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will have accelerated this trend over recent months as more and more homeowners try to create an at-home sanctuary or space for wellbeing within their immediate living space. The pandemic has also meant the bathroom has been under much more scrutiny for its hygiene credentials and consumers have been seeking solutions to improve the hygiene and cleanliness of this key space. Much remains to be said as to how this will unfold throughout 2021 however, we anticipate that this heightened awareness around hygiene will remain at the forefront of purchasing considerations for the foreseeable future. Another key trend that is rapidly growing in the bathroom market is the growing awareness around water consumption and consumers becoming more eco-aware, understanding how their individual lifestyle can impact the planet. We think this trend has also been ignited by the surge of smart water meters which is alerting many homeowners to their water consumption and spurring

requiring extensive work or knocking into other rooms within the home. The ability to place the trim or shower controls on an opposing wall to the head shower means installers can make the best use of the space and tailor the installation set up to the best interests of the customer and the individual space limitations.

Q

How important is personalisation becoming for the showers market? them on to find solutions that are less impactful. Our survey highlighted that 42% of us like to enjoy long showers so we know that there is definite demand to provide solutions that enable a luxurious experience that use less resource and are kinder to the environment. Furthermore, more than half of those surveyed admitted that they like to try and save water whilst showering and would like a shower than can assist them in being sustainable in their day-to-day life.

Q

Which areas of the showering market are performing strongly?

Consumer priorities around space-saving or optimising the space they have along with design trends in minimalism have meant that concealed shower installs are becoming ever-popular for larger bathroom renovation and refurbishment projects. In the UK, we are no strangers to small or awkwardly shaped bathroom spaces. Concealed showers can provide a lot more flexibility when it comes to creating a customer’s dream bathroom without

What features do homeowners value most in a shower? According to Grohe’s survey results, the top five features homeowners value most in a shower are: ■ Cool surfaces: 78% want a shower whose surface doesn’t get too hot whilst showering ■ Safety: 73% want a shower that is safe for all the family to use ■ No more drips: 69% consider it important that a shower doesn’t drip once turned off ■ Thermostatic: 61% like thermostatic showers so they don’t have to put up with temperature fluctuations ■ Rain showers: 54% want a larger shower head that offers full body coverage when showering such as a rain shower

Personalisation is a growing area of the showering market, which we predict will grow exponentially as the trend for wellbeing inspired bathrooms continues to soar this year. Our latest research concludes that 67% find showering restores their energy whilst 1 in 4 said that the first thing they do when feeling stressed is take a shower. With this in mind, we know that consumers are using the shower to help improve physical and emotional wellbeing so having enhanced features that allow them to tailor their shower experience every time to suit their needs will become of growing importance.

Q

What updates are at the top of consumers’ wish-lists when it comes to improving the shower space? The biggest response from our research was that 43% would like to replace their adjustable shower head on their current existing system in the near future. We’ve invested a lot into our retrofit shower heads over the past 18 months, developing new products that use technology such as Bluetooth connectivity and a more expansive range of shower sprays to enable consumers to still create a really powerful and impressive shower space even when they aren’t renovating the entire system. Meanwhile, the demand for replacing a complete system still remains strong with more than a third of people seeking a full refurbishment of their current shower. BATHROOM RENOVATION

GOING DIGITAL Suzannah Hallam, Digital Product Manager at Mira Showers, explains how digital technology is leading the way in the design of new showering products.

L

ast year was ‘the’ year for home improvements and renovations, with many of us spending far more time at home than we normally would. Having all that extra time during lockdown really made consumers look around them and notice all the things that needed to be done to improve their home space. We all know that in recent years digital technology has been leading the way, and smart homes have been on the increase in popularity, with many customers aspiring to the comfort and experience digital technology can offer. And the bathroom is no different. Today’s consumer no longer sees the bathroom as simply a place to wash; they want an experience, a ‘time out’ to escape the stresses and strains of everyday life and let’s face it, there have been plenty of those of late - and a place to luxuriate. Shower manufacturers such as Mira are constantly developing new products in line with consumer demand, and striving to lead

16 JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

the way in product design and innovation. And we’re really excited to introduce our latest range of digital showers, The Mira Activate, which not only offers easy installation to installers, but brings the future of showering to any bathroom.

Going Digital When it comes to showering in the 21st century, many consumers are going digital. After all, we have digital devices in every other area of our lives, so why would the bathroom be any different?

016_PHPI_JANFEB21_Layout 1 17/12/2020 22:11 Page 17

Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of digital technology in the bathroom space and how the functionality which comes with that can enhance their overall experience. When intuitive design is coupled with functionality which allows consumers to create bespoke experiences, the digitalisation of the bathroom space makes perfect sense. Digital bathroom products allow consumers to configure and personalise their showering experience through the digital interface or app. Our research shows that this is something that consumers are becoming a lot more interested in when redesigning bathroom spaces in their homes. Our latest digital shower to the market, the Mira Activate, is available in single and dual outlets and offers all of the features that consumers love, as well as some new ones, including a stylish digital controller, with linked app technology to personalise shower settings further. It’s also engineered for easy installation. It’s available in multiple outlet options, and has two digital valve platforms suitable for both high and low pressure systems, designed to make installers’ lives a little easier.

Stylish display For the customer, the Mira Activate offers a stylish digital display, enabling them to create up to 10 shower presets (with four default presets included), to set the perfect shower for any household member, as well as staying in the know about how much time – and water – their showers take up.

Sustainable solution Some of the major benefits of digital showering technology are the eco-friendly and sustainability benefits which can be achieved. As we all strive for greater sustainability, I only see this type of functionality increasing. Just as a consumer would monitor their energy use through their smart meter, or their energy consumption using their app-enabled home thermostat, the expectation is to be

able to monitor and take control of water through their shower, which is offered within the Mira Showers app.

Modern design The Mira Activate also boasts a modern design, with a high quality chrome plated finish, controller bezel accessories available to purchase separately in matt black, brushed nickel and titanium finishes, with a wireless remote control accessory also available (purchased separately). Customers can switch up temperature, flow rate, showerheads and more, to create the right kind of shower for every moment. You can revolutionise their shower experience, without compromising a thing. omeowners today are contending with ever-shrinking spaces, with data from LABC Warranty indicating that modern properties are typically smaller than 30 years ago, and the average size of a bathroom now around 4.4 square metres. Meanwhile, a recent survey from Checkatrade of 2,000 found that homeowners plan to spend £11.3bn from June’s stamp duty holiday on home renovations, with the bathroom coming in second in planned projects at 30%. There is clearly, then, a real opportunity for installers to take the opportunity to look at the all-too common issue of space as homeowners embark on their renovations.

The wall-hung way

As homeowners increasingly seek out design-led solutions, installers are tasked with coming up with ‘instagrammable’ bathrooms that are stylish, yet overcome this space challenge. As a result, manufacturers are developing a number of bathroom solutions that maximise space without compromising on style and we’re predicting real growth in particular for wall-hung toilets and sanitaryware in the UK market. Providing a space-saving alternative to traditional close coupled toilets, these systems are now more affordable than ever.

Space-saving

by incorporating a wall-hung system in a bathroom design, the ability to conceal the cistern and lift the toilet’s footprint off the floor can make even the smallest of bathrooms instantly appear bigger.

There’s no arguing that the bathroom is a valuable space, yet more often than not is the one room that requires the most versatile solutions – commonly the smallest room and the one more likely to throw up any awkward spaces. Yet, by incorporating a wall-hung system in a bathroom design, the ability to conceal the cistern and lift the toilet’s footprint off the floor can make even the smallest of bathrooms instantly appear bigger. Opting for a wall-hung system can also enable toilets to be easily installed in those tricky spots on a project, such as under a window, in a narrow wall duct or under a sloping ceiling.

Installation benefits? Installers may have in the past associated these systems with difficult installation processes but product development from manufacturers such as Geberit now means that quick and affordable pre-wall frame systems, such as Geberit Duofix, have been designed with installation in mind. Cleverly concealed fixings and the inclusion and position of water inlets, for example, make life easier for installers and the cistern is concealed inside a drywall, so there is no need for additional studding. Servicing and access to the cistern is also made easy via the flush plate.

Hung-up on hygiene But it’s not just the obvious space benefits that wall-hung sanitaryware can bring. It goes without saying that ease of cleaning is now a huge consideration for homeowners with hygiene now well and truly under the spotlight – and lifting the toilet off the floor is an effective way to make cleaning easier in the home. Indeed, when it comes to hygiene there are also other product developments installers can consider that can maximise hygiene in the bathroom. Surface coatings and glazes, for instance, can make cleaning easier. Products such as Geberit’s KeraTect Glaze benefit from a non-porous and smoother surface, helping prevent staining of the ceramics and creating a high-gloss effect. Solutions like this not only help maintain high levels of hygiene but also, importantly, really help to enhance the look and feel of the bathroom as a ‘clean’ space. Similarly, there are affordable solutions now on the market such as Twyford’s

Rimfree ceramic appliances and Geberit’s TurboFlush technology which can eliminate tricky corners and hard-to-reach areas around the pan, helping eradicate any hidden areas where dust and bacteria may thrive. The flushing system also clears away residue effectively, making regular cleaning much simpler.

Getting ahead of the game When you consider how the innovative design of these systems overcomes the ever-present issue of space in the home, the opportunity to sell affordable and

innovative bathroom wall-hung systems is a win-win for the installer and end-user. And, as the trend for home renovations ramps up in the UK, there is now a very real opportunity to boost your reputation by acting as an advisor to your customers on how they should be incorporating new innovations into projects, as well as a chance to boost your bottom line by upselling hygienically-optimised, space-saving solutions. WATER SOLUTION

Stuart Turner explains how it solved a water supply problem at a residential home with new tanks and a conditioner system.

L

ibury Hall is a charity that offers supported living within a residential care setting for adults who, due to mental health issues, are in need of practical, emotional or social support. All the residential accommodation offers a unique pathway of recovery for thirty-nine men and women aged 40 and over. It is a comfortable and friendly home surrounded by some of the most beautiful farmland in Hertfordshire. It provides four high quality cottages in half an acre of landscaped grounds, four individual apartments within an Italian style courtyard, a two bedroom high needs bungalow offering one to one specialist care, whilst the main house consists of 17 ‘state of the art’ residential rooms. In addition Libury Hall offers a Day Centre where residents can socialise, participate in activities and gain life skills.

Water supply

We now have excellent quality water coupled with high pressure which has made a huge difference for all the residents

When it became apparent that the water supply from the bore hole to the main home was failing its statutory tests, it needed quick and expert support to ensure the home could remain open. The existing water supply system came from the local bore hole and saw 6,000 litres of water from the borehole stored in tanks in the roof of the building and all the outlets across the site were gravity fed. The

22 JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

reality was that the facility didn’t need 6,000 litres of stored water – it wasn’t using enough to keep the water flowing and the quality of the stored water was falling below the quality required by statute. Michael Harvey from Harvey’s Heating in Hunsdon was called in to suggest a solution. There was a mains supply to the facility available as a backup – should the stored water supply not be adequate – so there was an option that would not involve major issues

022_PHPI_JANFEB21_Layout 1 17/12/2020 22:18 Page 23

in getting a new supply to the buildings. Michael discussed the options with Darren Cooper of Stuart Turner Pumps and together they decided the most efficient and cost effective solution was to provide a pressurised drinking water supply from the existing mains connection. The home had had regular water tank cleaning and maintenance services, but it wasn’t enough to keep the water quality at the required level. Michael ordered the Stuart Turner equipment – 8 x 450 litre composite tanks and a Stuart Turner water conditioner system that would ensure fresh, clean constantly available water.

‘Huge difference’ The new system is providing quality water between three and four bar, depending on usage through the shared main – a large improvement over the old gravity fed system. The water conditioner ensures the standard of the water. Angela Smith is the Director of Libury Hall: “I’ve been involved here for more than

twenty years and Libury Hall is a very important part of my life,” she said. “When we realised that there was a problem with the water our hearts sank. We have been so grateful to Michael and his team along with Stuart Turner for providing the expertise to solve what for us was a very complex issue. We now have excellent quality water coupled with high pressure which has made a huge difference for all the residents whilst we feel we have

invested in the home for the future.” “It’s always a privilege to work on these jobs where we can make a huge difference by simply by doing what we do best,” said Michael Harvey. “Between us, and Stuart Turner we have made a huge difference to people’s lives just by providing clean, reliable water.” To find out more about Stuart Turner’s www.rdr.link/pw023 solutions

HEATING & RENEWABLES

THE FUTURE OF GAS BOILERS STILL BURNS BRIGHT

Gas boilers remain the main source of heating and hot water in millions of UK homes. The latest models have advanced significantly, especially in terms of usability, further enhancing their credentials as the heating products of choice, as Sean Keleher, National Technical Manager at Navien UK, explains.

F

rom an installer’s perspective, one of the key considerations when choosing a gas boiler is the display. Utilising a unit with a text-driven display makes it easier to view the essential information required for the boiler’s operation. Not only does this simplify commissioning and servicing, it also provides engineers with more ‘real time’ data, including details of how efficiently the unit is performing. An easy-to-understand text-led display also provides end users with more details on the boiler itself, so there’s no desperate search for the manuals. For instance, should the heating system require topping up, an alert can be clearly displayed on the panel, enabling the user to either address the issue themselves or easily relay what’s needed to an installer.

The smart revolution continues Technological advances and the evolution of the Internet of Things (IoT) have also led to modern boilers being supplied with the latest smart controls straight out of the box. Alternatively, they can easily be upgraded with a manufacturer’s smart controller, such as the ‘Smart Plus’ from Navien. Another ‘smart’ development is geofencing functionality, which sees the heating turn on or off automatically, depending on the end user’s proximity to their home, as relayed via their smartphone. There is also the option to add multiple users, ensuring everyone in a household benefits from optimum levels of comfort.

Extra efficiency Combi boilers are renowned for their efficiency, but Boiler Plus also dictates new installations have a minimum efficiency of 92%, in addition to time and temperature controls. The legislation stipulates one of four additional requirements must be present in order for a boiler to be fitted; one of these options is a smart controller – as long as it features automation and optimisation functions, such as geofencing. Another potential option is weather compensation, which some may argue is the most effective means of maximising a heating system’s energy efficiency, as it allows a building to warm up slowly in advance of impending weather conditions. So, in the event of a flurry of snow or icy temperatures, there are no peaks and troughs during the boiler’s heating cycle – and operating efficiency is not compromised.

Avoiding the wait for hot water While homeowners’ primary focus will be on their central heating, it is equally important to ensure energy efficient and user-friendly delivery of hot water. Utilising

24 JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

boilers with a built-in pre-heat function ensures taps and shower outlets do not have to wait too long for hot water, while avoiding wastage. Modern boilers can now even learn from a household’s behaviour during a seven-day period, so hot water is regularly available in accordance with user habits and daily routines. So, advances in heating technology continue to have a positive impact on the industry, enhancing efficiency and usability on many levels. By offering long-term economic and energy savings, as well as longevity, reliability and peace of mind, modern boilers look set to remain a stalwart in UK homes for the considerable future. T

he water circulating in a heating system is a key part of the efficient and effective delivery of heat to any property. Fernox has recently launched a new Express Inhibitor Test, designed to make testing central heating systems for the correct concentration of inhibitor quicker and easier. The company says the test provides a pass or fail result in just 10 seconds. Additionally, the test is also compatible with the Fernox Water Test App, helping installers log and manage results – even across multiple jobs.

Dip service The test is straightforward to perform – installers dip the test strip provided into the system water and within 10 seconds, it will change colour. By comparing the test strip to the colour chart label on the bottle, installers can assess whether the system water includes the correct concentration of inhibitor. Fernox says a fully protected system will have inhibitor levels of 100ppm or above – and will pass the test. However, if the test fails and a result of less than 100ppm is received, the system should be re-dosed, Fernox says, with Protector F1.

The user-friendly test will save time on site, as results are received within just 10 seconds. Richard Crisp, Head of Chemistry at Fernox said: “With the Express Inhibitor Test, installers are equipped with a quick and effective solution to conduct the recommended annual, central heating system water test to check the correct concentration of inhibitor – and therefore comply with BS 7593:2019 and the Benchmark Commissioning Checklist. The user-friendly test will save time on site, as results are received within just 10

seconds. This also means that, even if the test fails, there is no requirement for a repeat site visit.”

Appy days The company has also looked at how it can assist installers track test results with its free to download Fernox Water Test App. Using the in-app camera, users can take a picture of the test strip and select its colour to generate the pass or fail result. If the test passes, users will receive a digital certificate that acts as evidence that the test has been completed and the system is protected. If a test fails, installers can also demonstrate that action has been taken and the system subsequently re-tested to receive a positive result. Richard Crisp said: “The Fernox Water Test App also makes it easy to record and manage the results of each test. This is ideal for contractors working on schemes with

local authorities, such as social housing, when they are required to demonstrate that the annual test has been completed.” The Express Inhibitor Test will check for the presence of any molybdate based inhibitor within the system water – including the company’s Protector F1. Each small, portable kit contains enough test strips to test 50 systems. The Fernox Water Test App is compatible with iOS and Android devices. HEATING & RENEWABLES

GO WITH THE PHPI chats to Brian Beattie, Head of GB Sales for Warmflow, about the company’s oil and renewables solutions.

Q

Warmflow has been operating as a manufacturer and supplier of oil fired boilers and other home heating products for half a century. What do you think the big topics will be for the sector in the coming years? The industry has undergone radical change in the previous few years with an increasing focus on developing products which help companies and customers reduce carbon footprint as well as enhancing energy efficiency. At Warmflow we’ve been working hard to ensure we future proof our products and help the environment in reducing our carbon footprint. This has involved launching a new range of oil and renewable products which are more energy efficient meaning they use less fuel to provide customers with heating and hot water. Our new Agentis oil boiler range includes the UK & Ireland’s only AA rated oil combi boiler which will save the homeowner up to 5ltrs of fuel per week and we have recently launched a range of

FLOW

renewable air source and ground source heat pumps under the Zeno brand. I see these two trends continuing for the foreseeable future and at Warmflow we will continue to push forward to ensure we are at the forefront of this trend.

Q

The company’s solutions include oil boilers, hot water cylinders and renewables. Are you seeing any shift towards products like Air Source Heat Pumps and Wood Pellet boilers? We have certainly seen a growing demand for renewable products and air source in particular over the past 12 months. This has been encouraged through government incentives such as RHI and the more recent Green Homes Grant which is currently running throughout England. More and more customers are now increasingly aware of the need to protect our planet and its natural resources and renewable

technology is a great way to harness the earth’s natural energy to heat your home. For many homeowner customers it provides a feel good factor that they are helping “do their bit” for the environment. In response to this trend, we launched a range of Zeno air & ground source heat pumps just over a year ago. With SCoPs of over five, our Zeno renewable range is one of the most efficient and technologically advanced on the market today.

‘HI’

SAY TO HYDROGEN First houses heated by hydrogen are showcased in Northumberland.

B

axi Heating and Worcester Bosch have installed hydrogen burning boilers at ‘HyStreet’, in specially built demonstration houses at DNV GL’s specialist test site at Spadeadam in Northumberland. The site has been used to complete over 200 tests, researching and proving the safety of converting homes and gas networks to hydrogen. The project is part of H21, a Network Innovation Competition project sponsored by Ofgem which is demonstrating how existing natural gas networks can be repurposed to safely carry 100% hydrogen. For the first demonstration both Worcester Bosch and Baxi Heating have installed combi boilers into the houses on HyStreet. The boilers have been developed as part of the UK Government-funded Hy4Heat programme, which is also supporting the development of hydrogen-ready gas cookers, fires and gas meters.

Network repurposing Around 85% of UK homes currently rely on natural gas for heating and hot water. Repurposing the natural gas grid for use with hydrogen would mean a low disruption option for households to decarbonise heating without the need for extensive changes to existing systems. Tim Harwood, Northern Gas Networks’ Project Director for H21 said: “Seeing the boilers in situ at Spadeadam is an exciting

step in the journey to realising our goal of a gas network transporting 100% hydrogen to customers. The hydrogen boiler looks and feels just like the natural gas version we all have today and is just as user-friendly, showing that a transition could cause minimal disruption to customers.”

Dan Allason, Head of Research and Innovation, at DNV GL’s Spadeadam Research and Testing said: “Eight out of ten homes in the UK use a gas boiler to heat their homes and provide hot water and replacing all gas boilers with electric alternatives could be extremely costly. Both of the boiler manufacturers have developed options with their hydrogen ready prototypes to assist the switch to a lower carbon alternative. “Having these fitted to the HyStreet demonstration project at Spadeadam

gives gravitas to the proof of concept and public acceptability of appliances such as these. The boilers are one of the first important steps”

‘Real setting’ Karen Boswell, Managing Director of Baxi Heating, said: “This is an important step forward on our hydrogen journey and we are delighted to be able to demonstrate this innovative new technology in a real life setting in the UK.” Carl Arntzen, CEO of Worcester Bosch commented: “It is fantastic to see our prototype hydrogen boiler running successfully at this demonstration site. The boiler has operated seamlessly in its first month of operation and continues to provide both heating and hot water. “It proves that hydrogen gas has great potential as a zero-carbon alternative to natural gas for heating and hot water in the UK and beyond. These initial tests are incredibly encouraging and will hopefully give key decision makers confidence to deploy hydrogen gas as a fuel for the future.” To find out more about Worcester Bosch’s Hydrogen boilers www.rdr.link/pw029

A SNUG FIT PHPI follows a boiler installation where the flue has been sealed with the FlueSnug pipe collar.

P

ipeSnug is a familiar name to PHPI and we have followed the company’s story from its launch by Directors Chris Burdett and Alex Lever. Three years later and the popularity of the range continues to grow, so much so that recently the team launched FlueSnug, designed to fit all 100mm boiler flues. Removing any need for pointing, FlueSnug can be installed in less than five seconds and snuggly fits the 152mm core-drilled hole in the wall through which the boiler pipe and flue exits. The product can be used both inside and outside the property for the best finish, prevents heat escaping and acts as a barrier to drafts, damp, insects and pests.

Tight night FlueSnug is designed primarily to help ensure properties meet air tightness requirements, simplify the installation of flues in older properties and when fitted, eliminates the need for any further pointing with mortar or sealing around the flue to the building fabric. FlueSnug also allows installers to quickly access the pipe and flue for any service or maintenance requirements, without the need to remove existing brickwork, mortar or sealant, saving even more time and cost for installers and their customers. You can then refit the existing FlueSnug – you don’t have to buy another one. Approved by major boiler manufacturers, the team behind FlueSnug say it is the quickest, and most cost effective way to comply with forthcoming changes to Part L of the Building Regulations and to help maintain the energy efficiency of the building.

1a Earlier this year, a consultation affecting Part L set out the UK Government’s plans for the Future Homes Standard, including proposed options to increase the energy efficiency requirements for new homes in 2020. It will require new build homes to be future-proofed with low carbon heating and high levels of energy efficiency by 2025. One of the proposed changes would require the fitting of a grommet or collar onto a pipe where it enters or exits a home, helping to maintain the energy efficiency of the building. This will help to ensure that new homes are the most energy efficient they can be, even if the fabric of the building, including floors or walls, has been penetrated by pipework. The team behind PipeSnug believes fitting a pipe collar or grommet, such as PipeSnug and FlueSnug, solves these problems.

new virtual house featuring a range of renewable heating technologies has been added to Grant’s online Knowledge Hub. Visitors to the hub can step inside this virtual reality to see how the company’s heat pump, cylinder, radiators and underfloor heating system can be integrated to work together within a home. The virtual house has been developed to allow homeowners to immerse themselves within a real home environment to see how renewable heating technologies work together. Showcasing a selection of the company’s products, this tool aims to help homeowners on their own journey to net zero by demonstrating how renewable technologies can integrate into their home.

Stepping out into the garden and to the right of the backdoor, a Grant Aerona³ R32 air source heat pump is sited beside the property – the heart of the renewable system in this home. Throughout the rest of the property, Afinia aluminium radiators have been fitted which emit the heat into the rooms. The Grant Virtual House is the latest zone to be added to the company’s Knowledge Hub which Grant UK launched on their website in summer last year. To visit the Grant House please www.rdr.link/pw032

With this in mind, it has published a series of images that G1 installers can use and share in posts via their own social channels. “At the core of the G1 Scheme is support for our loyal members,” says Anna Wakefield, Head of Marketing and Data Protection at Grant UK. “From extended guarantees through to sales leads, training and marketing support, the G1 Scheme delivers rewards and provides installer support in many ways. This new social content is just the latest way we are helping G1 installers to be equipped in the marketplace to best position their businesses in front of their customers, specifically online. “We really hope this new digital content will be of value to members and we will be continuously adding to the bank of assets so installers can turn to the Portal for professional, fresh content for use today and in the future.” Existing G1 Installers can log on to their Portal to download the social assets. TAKE THE TUBE

Rhino Products, known for its range of roof racks and bars, has recently redesigned its popular 3m PipeTube. To discover more about the new solution, and some of the other van accessories available from the company, PHPI spoke to Maxine James – Group Sales & Marketing Director.

Q

The recent redesign of Rhino Products popular 3m PipeTube was the first complete redesign since its launch in 2005. Why now, and what are the new features on the PipeTube Pro? The new PipeTube Pro has had a complete redesign, adding an array of new features to the product. A new optional PVC lining helps to stop the oxidation process, that can lead to the discolouration of the items stored inside – rated as the most important feature of a pipe carrying accessory by tradespeople in a recent survey that we carried out, this option has proved to be extremely popular with trades and fleets alike. The product also features a new O-ring seal, integral locking system, powder coated paint finish and a stronger bulkhead, to name a few. The new design allows for additional modular sections to be added, creating 4 and 5m length tubes, which is particularly sought after by Rhino’s European customers, serviced by our EU distribution centres and offices in the Netherlands, Sweden and Poland.

The upgrade to this customer product favourite came as an increased demand for additional features on the original PipeTube arose. Rhino’s in-house design team are continuously developing the Rhino range, as well as adding new products, and this is why our customer feedback is always greatly valued.

Q

Many plumbers and heating engineers are extremely proud of their van and demand external accessories look the part. How does the design of the PipeTube Pro ensure it delivers on looks as well as features? The Rhino PipeTube had always been the product of choice for plumbers and heating engineers, and we wanted to ensure that the new design complimented the aesthetic of modern commercial vehicles. New stylised grooves have been added to the tubes extrusion, alongside a sleek new nose cone and a powder coated paint finish, which works well with any van colour.

Q

Launched in the Autumn of 2020, another new product from Rhino is its AluminiumLadder. With weight often an issue for van users, how have you kept this down on your new roof access solution?

By utilising highly robust aluminium handrails and glass filled nylon rungs, the AluminiumLadder offers an extremely lightweight solution. Each model is more than 50% lighter than Rhino’s old steel ladders, and has been rigorously tested to a safe working load of 120kg per ladder.

Q

And what are the other key benefits of this new van ladder?

The new ladder is every bit as strong as its previous steel counterpart and has been independently thermal vibration tested at Millbrook Proving Ground. The new easy-grip aluminium side rails and anti-slip

Rhino’s in-house design team are continuously developing the Rhino range, as well as adding new products, and this is why our customer feedback is always greatly valued. ladder rungs provide safe access to the vehicle roof. The ladder also features enhanced fitting brackets, designed to sit flush within the curvature of the vehicle door, helping to reduce any temporary deformation which can occur with other products on the market.

Q

How can plumbers be sure these new solutions will fit on their van?

The AluminiumLadder is available in 6, 7 and 8 rung configurations with bespoke fitting kits to suit a variety of popular commercial vehicles.

Q

Both these new solutions follow the company’s move to a new HQ in Ellesmere Port in the Spring of 2020 – does this mean that Rhino

will be bringing out further van accessories in the coming year? Thanks to the move of Rhino to our new 87,250 sqft dedicated office and factory earlier this year, we are able to progress our product range even further. Product development is a key part of Rhino’s DNA and multiple exciting products are currently in development. In 2017 we acquired AVS Steps, a leading passenger sidestep company, who are now based in our existing factory in Deeside. AVS will be launching a new folding sidestep for ambulances and passenger vehicles in the coming months, with further products following. To find out more about Rhino Products www.rdr.link/pw046

Workwear brand Dickies has teamed up with Bolton Wanderers FC to test its new Advanced Waterproof Technology (AWT) range at the University of Bolton Stadium.

HOME AND D

ickies Workwear has outfitted stadium ground staff, security and maintenance staff with clothing and footwear from its Advanced Waterproof Technology (AWT) range, which is designed to guard the wearer against the elements. Featuring materials that repel rain, sleet and snow while remaining breathable, AWT products were considered especially useful for the ground staff who work outside every day caring for the pitch. “With the weather in constant flux with rain, hail, wind, freezing temperatures and even snow, it can be quite challenging to work in and play at the home of Bolton Wanderers FC, so this was an ideal opportunity to put our new AWT range to the test,” said James Whitaker, Marketing Director at Dickies Workwear. “Not every piece of workwear or outerwear is suited for that level of punishment, but what Dickies Workwear does well is craft tough, no-nonsense workwear at a price everyone can afford that can stand-up to the outdoors. We’ve had some great feedback from the staff at the club who enjoyed trialling our new range.”

Bad weather

Items worn by ground staff at Bolton Wanderers FC include the Dickies Winter Jacket, which features a high level of waterproofing while also being breathable – making it a good option for working outdoors in bad weather conditions. Chris Simm, Head Groundsman of Bolton Wanderers FC, said: “The ground staff, security and match day staff have a lot riding on their shoulders given the level of work that goes into making sure our facilities perform. Our workers need to feel comfortable and protected and we know Dickies Workwear provides exactly what they need to make sure they’re able to stay focused on game day.” In addition to outfitting workers, the partnership includes Dickies Workwear being featured in-stadium throughout the season via digital signage and advertising, as well as in the official game-day programme. Dickies will also have a presence within various digital platforms, including the club’s website, the team’s Facebook page and more.

Makita has launched its third generation of accessories, promising anti-slip technology across the range.

A heavy load support system has been incorporated into products such as the Ultimate Padded Braces, which has been designed to distribute weight between the waist and shoulders to reduce hip and lower back pain – the aim is to reduce fatigue on these areas and allow users to continue to work in comfort for longer.

idely recognised for its power tools, Makita UK has recently launched a collection of belts and pouches to its range of accessories. The range has been designed to make it easier for tradespeople to safely and easily store and transport tools and accessories. The collection includes belts, braces, pouches, holders, bags, cases, gear and equipment. There are over 40 products in the range and the pouches and holsters are available in a number of designs, depending on the end use. The company explained that each has the benefit of Anti-Slip Technology, which is used on all friction points and pocket edges, designed to tightly grip tools. The intention is to stop them from sliding around and keep them securely in place to help prevent accidental falls. This is also useful for those working in awkward positions where they need both hands free. All belts and pouches are inclusive of 3L Technology, a three layer combination of polyesters and foam, to provide additional cushioning and improve user comfort. Lyndsey Bailey, Assistant Product Manager at Makita said: “To complete the range, Makita has also launched a range of handy additional accessories – including smartphone holders, flasks, a work vest with adjustable pockets, knee pads, a

guide rail protective holder, lunch bags and a thermal mug. Makita has designed each product with its end use in mind and has introduced a number of new technologies and innovative features to guarantee suitability. These fantastic new products offer users increased comfort, ease of use, flexibility and reliability.”

Get organised To help with tool storage some of Makita’s bags, pouches and holders include elastic loops that can be used to organise tools and essential items, designed to keep them secure during transportation. In addition, a Tool Loops System, which is available in the new tool cases, allows the user to store numerous tools without having to make any adjustments. The system can hold a wide variety of tools thanks to a combination of loop sizes, with a single or twin row formation to maximise capacity. The company’s new tool cases also give users the option to customise the internal compartments using a new Rail Guide System – a combination of plastic side rails and light separating walls. THE 2021

T

he plumbing and heating industry is resilient, but it goes without saying that the COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenge and continues to impact on how we all live and work. Going into 2021, it is the CIPHE’s aim to support plumbing and heating engineers in navigating the new normal.

The new normal Heating engineers up and down the country have frequently had to adapt the way they work to maintain social distancing, protecting themselves and others. This has extended to access to training, with an increased reliance on remote learning and online modules as events and in-person training have been postponed. These methods of working and learning will continue, even once the COVID-19 vaccines have been used widely across the UK. In fact, the collective extra considerations given to matters of hygiene and health while working in domestic environments, as well as the flexibility of home learning, should be welcomed. To this end, the CIPHE is investing in our own digital offering in 2021 to deliver more online learning resources. Of course, traditional methods of education are still important as long as they remain fit for purpose. The CIPHE continues to support Approved Training Centre (ATC) partners delivering quality education.

Unoccupied properties This year has also seen marked changes in how consumers and businesses are using heat and hot water. Many buildings

RECOVERY

The plumbing and heating industry is set to face a wide array of challenges this year, in particular navigating the ongoing impact of the coronavirus. Kevin Wellman, CEO of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), outlines the key issues and opportunities to secure a healthy future. previously in full-time use have remained unoccupied for several months or have reduced working capacity to partial use. Likewise, some single person homes have joined another household to create a bubble, leaving their home unattended for long periods. When water outlets are not used for some time, stagnant water is left sitting in pipes which can create the perfect conditions for bacteria to multiply and increases the risk for growth and spread of life-threatening Legionella. It is important to remain vigilant and warn customers of the dangers and the CIPHE has always provided guidance on this critical issue. More time spent at home during periods of national and regional lockdowns have also inevitably led to a rise in domestic scalds and burns, as well as a soar in usage of domestic water and energy. Recommending efficient products and safety measures, such as thermostatic mixer valves (TMV’s), can make a real difference to consumer safety and often help to lower household bills.

New opportunity Despite the disruption caused by COVID-19, several recent government announcements have been made to support sustainable heating. The extension

of the Green Homes Grant for one was a welcome development. The CIPHE continues to make representations that this scheme will have the greatest chance of success if the Government increases installer accessibility to it. The pledges to increase heat pump manufacturing to 600,000 units per year by 2028, and greater hydrogen trial investment mean new skills will be required. The CIPHE is involved in creating training courses and advising government on making low carbon heating a reality. These are just a few of the ways the CIPHE will be working to support our industry. Read our full manifesto to find out even more information regarding our pledges and commitment to raising standards across safety, health and welfare of the public, the environment, education, regulation and licensing.
