The road ahead In mid-October the Government announced its strategy to shift domestic heating towards the installation of low-carbon solutions. The headline policy for the sector is a three-year £450million Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). Homeowners wishing to replace gas boilers with low carbon heating systems – most likely heat pumps – will be able to get a £5,000 grant to offset the higher up-front cost of the technology. The new grants will be available from April next year. The Government hopes that this incentive is large enough to get the retrofit heating market moving towards low carbon solutions, to a point where they become cheaper for households to buy and run. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “Our new grants will help homeowners make the switch sooner, without costing them extra, so that going green is the better choice when their boiler needs an upgrade.” To help with the transition there will also be a new £60million Heat Pump Ready innovation programme, designed to help grow the electric heat pump market and expand British manufacturing. There is also a Heat Network Transformation Programme, which aims to develop and grow the heat network market. Whitehall has deferred taking a view on hydrogen’s role in home heating until 2026. The overall ambition is that by 2035 all new heating systems installed in the UK will be low carbon technologies. Many in the sector have welcomed this news, although there have been a number of calls for the government to recognise that to meet its decarbonisation goals a range of solutions will be required. Another question is around the number of trained heat pump installers available. To ensure systems are designed and installed correctly and efficiently the CIPHE is calling for the training of ‘100,000 installers in low carbon technologies’. You can read a full round up of the reaction to the announcement on page 10. At the moment gas boilers remain the mainstay of the sector, but we have known for a while that to meet its Net Zero goals the Government would have to formulate a pathway to tackle heat in buildings. This new strategy is an indication of the ‘direction of travel’ it sees for the sector in the coming years.

NEW BOILER UPGRADE SCHEME UNVEILED (left to right) Mark Wilkins, Helen Whately MP and Klaus Jesse
VAILLANT OPENS NEW CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE CENTRE Vaillant has launched a brand-new Customer Experience Centre – which was unveiled in an official opening attended by Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, Helen Whately MP. Based at the company’s UK headquarters in Belper, Derbyshire, the new Customer Experience Centre will support both Vaillant and sister-brand Glow-worm, reinforcing the history of ongoing innovation right through to the latest advanced heat pump and hydrogen boiler technologies. This latest activity follows the recent announcement of a £3 million investment to expand Vaillant’s Belper manufacturing facility to serve growing demand for its aroTHERM plus heat pumps, alongside its range of high efficiency boilers. Klaus Jesse, Managing Director for Vaillant Group UK and Ireland said: “The new centre has been designed to provide an immersive and interactive environment, where customers can see the breadth of our extensive products first-hand, get a feel for how they work and gain a deeper understanding as to how they might meet their customers’ needs both now, and in the future.”
The Government has announced a new scheme designed to incentivise people to install low-carbon heating systems. Under the £450 million Boiler Upgrade Scheme householders can benefit from £5,000 grants to replace aging boilers with low carbon systems. The new scheme will begin in April 2022 and is set to last for three years. Whilst confirming its ambition for all new heating systems to be installed from 2035 to be low-carbon, the Government has also said that no-one will be forced to remove their existing boilers, with this transition away from boilers taking place over the next 14 years. Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said: “As the technology improves and costs plummet over the next decade, we expect low carbon heating systems will become the obvious, affordable choice for consumers. Through our new grant scheme, we will ensure people are able to choose a more efficient alternative in the meantime.” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said, “As we clean up the way we heat our homes over the next decade, we are backing our brilliant innovators to make clean technology like heat pumps as cheap to buy and run as gas boilers – supporting thousands of green jobs.” You can find out more, including reaction from the sector, on page 10
GREEN HEATING CREDIT COULD BRIDGE HEAT PUMP AFFORDABILITY GAP New research for Baxi shows the ongoing affordability gap between low-carbon heat pumps and traditional gas boilers. The UK government is targeting the installation of 600,000 heat pumps-a-year which would lead to a sizeable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. However, the paper, commissioned by Baxi, found that the average annual running cost of a low-carbon air source heat pump remains £236 more than a gas boiler. The report says that the affordability gap in running costs for heat pumps is largely because of a 25.5% environmental levy on electricity. Heat pumps use electricity and therefore have greater environmental taxes even though they are low carbon sources of heat. The paper proposes that the government pay a £250-a-year Green Heating Credit for heat pump owners which could bridge this gap in running costs. This would refund the extra levy paid by Air Source Heat Pump users. Karen Boswell OBE, Managing Director of Baxi UK & Ireland, said: “Heat pumps could play their part as we decarbonise the nation’s heating but we need to bridge this affordability gap. A Green Heating Credit would be fairer to heat pump users who are investing in decarbonising their heating and it is fair to consumers using traditional forms of heating as it won’t affect their heating bills. It also leaves room for alternative low carbon heating technologies such as hydrogen to emerge.” To read the report please

£450million Boiler Upgrade Scheme has been announced by the Government as it aims to bring the cost of low carbon heating towards that of traditional boilers. From April 2022 households can benefit from a £5,000 grant to help with the installation of low carbon heating systems. The scheme will last for three years. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “As we clean up the way we heat our homes over the next decade, we are backing our brilliant innovators to make clean technology like heat pumps as cheap to buy and run as gas boilers – supporting thousands of green jobs.” It is thought that any transition to low-carbon heating will require a diverse mix of technology, such as heat pumps and heat networks, and potentially heating appliances fuelled by hydrogen. The Government will take a decision on hydrogen’s role in heating homes by 2026.

We believe that hybrid systems, where a heat pump works alongside a gas boiler, should be included as they are a vital stepping-stone for those who are new to renewable technology, and can still reduce household CO2 emissions by as much as 55% compared to a traditional gas boiler.” Russell Dean, Head of Residential Heating and Ventilation at Mitsubishi Electric said: “Mitsubishi Electric welcomes the Government’s drive to reduce the cost of heat pumps, and its recognition of the role that such technologies can play in the decarbonisation of our housing stock. “To ensure the costs continue to drop for the consumer we must now see a concerted effort to train up a nationwide network of installers that can deliver on this new opportunity. This can be done by upskilling gas boiler engineers and installers to ensure they are not left behind as the country moves towards a growth in green jobs and heat pumps receive the backing of the big energy network providers.”

BEIS is wise to leave these options open as it is abundantly clear that no single solution will deliver net-zero.” Graham Russell, Managing Director of Viessmann said: “The future of heat is about a mix of technologies and solutions working in tandem. There is no quick fix or single solution available to decarbonise the UK’s building stock. An array of technologies will have a role to play. “Given the diversity of the UK building stock and consumer base, we are
delighted that the strategy encompasses a mix of policies to promote heat pumps, hydrogen heat, heat networks and energy efficiency as well as new funding giving the industry a framework to push forward with innovative solutions.” Mark Wilkins from Vaillant said: “We welcome today’s long-awaited Heat and Buildings Strategy, setting out further direction and vision for our low carbon future. “Time is of the essence when it comes to decarbonisation, and heat pumps are the best way to decarbonise today. Hydrogen will be a low carbon solution but more tests need to be carried out before we can successfully roll out hydrogen for heating. In the future, there will be a mix of both hydrogen-fuelled boilers and heat pumps as there is no silver bullet to lowering carbon emissions of the UK’s diverse housing stock.” Carl Arntzen, CEO of Worcester Bosch, said: “Although the Government’s Heat and Buildings Strategy does look like a clear indication of ongoing investment, it doesn’t go far enough. When considering a heat pump there are many factors to assess which are not considered here, such as the property’s suitability. “A home may need to be adapted to accommodate a heat pump, such as resizing radiators and making space for hot water cylinders, which carry cost implications. Therefore, the proposed grants may help with the cost to purchase a heat pump, but there will still be costly investment required from homeowners in existing properties. “As for boilers, the strategy does not refer to any legislation behind a boiler ban, so it’s not surprising that there is confusion among installers and homeowners. “Whilst it is encouraging to see that hydrogen is still on the agenda and is referred to within the Strategy, it is a shame to see that a decision around hydrogen won’t be made until five years from now. With hydrogen-ready boilers already successfully trialled, they could be a strong alternative to fossil fuel boilers on the market today – yet this strategy seems to omit them.” For more details please www.rdr.link/pab009

SPECIAL REPORT | Hard Water
SCALE OF
ECONOMY
Water softeners, filters and purifiers are the sustainable solution to hard water, says Dario Palumbo, Marketing Manager at Monarch Water.
T
he white cliffs of Dover are an iconic representation of the British Isles and showcase the sedimentary rock upon which the UK sits. Although only visible at various coastal points across England, the chalky white rocks lie underneath large parts of England and beyond. Although aesthetically pleasing, these rock formations have a direct impact on water quality within the region where they are situated. Typically, in areas where the bedrock comprises sedimentary rocks, such as chalk and limestone, water is classed as hard as it has a high mineral content. As rainwater falls its makes its way through the earth and rocks. In areas where sedimentary rocks are present, the water dissolves small amounts of chemical compounds, such as calcium and magnesium, as it passes. It takes on these minerals and passes it into the water supply. As the south east of England is predominantly made up of chalk and limestone regions it has the hardest water in the UK. However, 60% of the UK receives a hard water supply.
Hard facts Although large areas of the UK are having to deal with the issues that hard water causes, many consumers don’t realise the extent of the problems that limescale has on their homes. Heating and plumbing installers are best placed to highlight the serious problems that limescale is causing to customers’ homes. This will not only help their customers protect their homes, but open up a new line of revenue for installers too. Hard water causes deposits of scale around the home that are difficult to shift. However, it’s the hidden damage that most homeowners are unaware of that can cost them the most. Limescale build up inside
14 DECEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
pipes and on heating elements inside household equipment, such as boilers, showers, dishwashers and washing machines, will not only make them less efficient, but more costly to run too. In fact, according to British Water, just 1.6mm of limescale on a heating element makes it work 12% harder.
Sustainable technology When it comes to improving the quality of water in homes, installers can recommend their customers to take measures to both soften and filter their water supply, by installing a water softener to protect household appliances, and filter tap for premium quality drinking water. Consumers increased focus on sustainability means that they will be looking for eco solutions for their homes. High efficiency water softeners, for
014_PHPI_DEC21_Layout 1 05/11/2021 12:05 Page 15
example, are the best option for households who want to remove existing limescale and prevent any new deposits forming inside their equipment. By recommending the latest generation of water softeners, featuring Opti-Brining technology, installers can help their customers enjoy the benefits of soft water with a clear conscience. These models only regenerate when needed, using 12% less salt and 24% less water than previous models, making them a sustainable solution to hard water. Installers should opt for compact softeners that feature innovations such as the Hi-Flow Rapid-Fit bypasses, which removes the need for 80% of the equipment previously required to fit, making them quick install. Available in electric and battery-powered models, these softeners are suitable for any application and compatible with any boiler.
Heating and plumbing installers are best placed to highlight the serious problems that limescale is causing to customers’ homes. Quality on tap Whilst water softeners solve the issues of hard water damaging household equipment, homeowners can also improve their drinking water. The simple solution is to recommend a water filtration system or water purifier, which can be easily fitted under kitchen sinks to produce great-tasting water instantly. Water purifiers use semi-permeable 0.0001uM membranes, in a multi-stage filtration process, to remove scale, scum,
heavy metals, chemicals and microorganisms from water, which has a positive impact on the flavour. Some also use a remineralising post filter, replenishing the healthy, naturally-occurring minerals. Carbon Block Filters remove impurities such as chlorine, herbicides and pesticides producing clean, ultra-clear water. These products often come complete with taps too. For ease of use, installers should recommend units that feature auto-shut-off heads, as they enable the cartridges to be changed without turning off the water supply. Sustainable water softening and filtration options are increasing in popularity, so it’s important that installers take advantage of this burgeoning market and help their customers protect their homes. DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS
A SMART SOLUTION FOR EVERY SITUATION N o matter what the job is, it is crucial for heating engineers to provide their customers with a suitable heating control that offers ease of use, reliability and efficiency gains. But what are the wider benefits for installers in selecting a heating control that is compatible with more than just a standard gas boiler?
Fit for any purpose For installers who work across different heat sources, from gas boilers to heat pumps and electrical heat sources, it can often mean that each type of installation requires a different set of heating controls in order to maximise its efficiency. However, there are now heating controls available on the market that are compatible with multiple heat source types. This means that installers can streamline the stock they need to keep in the van, and ensure they have a system they’re familiar with that can be recommended in any situation. For example, Wiser has recently been updated to include a dedicated heat pump setting in the Wiser Home app, and the recently launched Underfloor Heating Controller and Electrical Heat Switch expands the product range even further. This means that with just one solution, installers can recommend Wiser for gas boilers, renewable heat pumps, wet underfloor and electrical heating.
Remi Volpe, Managing Director at Drayton, looks at why it’s important to stock a solution that is compatible with a wide variety of heat sources, and the benefits it can offer both installers and homeowners. This is something that is going to become increasingly more important as traditional gas boilers are phased out and homeowners begin to invest more heavily in renewable heat sources. By getting familiar with a heating control compatible with these types of products now, even if they are being installed for a gas system, installers will be in a prime position to make the switch when the time comes.

Mixed systems A smart heating control that is compatible with different heat sources can also offer huge benefits for households where, for example, the downstairs is heated with underfloor heating, whilst the upstairs relies on a traditional gas boiler and radiators. A smart heating system like Wiser can control mixed heat sources from a single app. Not only does this simplify the job for the heating engineer, making installation and commissioning easier, but it also enables installers to offer their customers a seamless and simplified user experience when it comes to managing their heating.
Optimising efficiency Whilst many smart controls have been designed to enhance the efficiency of traditional gas heating systems, for households where renewable heat sources are installed, it can be just as important to optimise the efficiency of the system. This is particularly crucial when it comes to heat pump installations. In order to achieve the same comfort levels that customers are used to from a gas heating system, any control being installed alongside a heat pump should feature OpenTherm, which can be found in smart controls like Wiser. These open protocols allow the smart control and heating system to communicate with each other to modulate temperature flow, helping to ensure comfort is maximised whilst optimising energy usage.
installers can streamline the stock they need to keep in the van, and ensure they have a system they’re familiar with A smart heating control should also enable installers to offer the same efficiency benefits and insights to every customer, no matter the type of system. For example, the smart modes found on the Wiser Home app can be utilised regardless of whether the smart control is fitted to a system that relies on a gas boiler, incorporates underfloor heating, or works with an electric heat source. By giving their customers access to features such as Eco Mode, which combines optimum stop and weather compensation to adapt heating schedules according to changing weather conditions, installers can help their customers make additional energy savings of up to 7% and reduce their energy bills further. Meanwhile activating Away Mode can contribute to savings of up to 24%.
Meet the new Wiser Underfloor Heating Controller and Electrical Heat Switch The Wiser Underfloor Heating Controller is modular in design and can be integrated into all heating systems and configurations. Not only does the controller offer both heating and cooling functions, but it also offers the flexibility for zoning. Up to three controllers can be added to the system, each of which can control up to six zones, which can be operated on separate schedules when paired with a room thermostat. The Wiser Electrical Heat Switch has a 16A relay for electrical heating and, because it is hard wired, can act as a range extender for the Wiser Home system. Also set up easily through the Wiser Home app, the switch is compatible with electric radiators and towel rails, electrical underfloor heating, plinth heaters and infrared panel heaters. These two new additions are part of Wiser’s development into a full smart and sustainable home system and as part of this transition the Wiser app has now been renamed Wiser Home. So, whether installers are already working across different heat sources or are planning to up-skill to incorporate new technologies in the future, it’s never too early to familiarise themselves with the heating controls available on the market that will support any job they’re working on. Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Communication and Product Management at Worcester Bosch, gives an overview of what is expected to be seen in the heating and hot water market in 2022.
HEATING IN 2022... A
s we edge closer to 2022, several initiatives relating to our industry are in the pipeline. Some might even come to fruition in the latter part of this year. An on-going focus on training and information courses is underway to help the transition process towards net-zero over the next couple of years. It is an exciting time for the heating and hot water industry, and we are looking forward to changes, both big and small, being implemented over the course of the next decade.
Coming up What we know today is that the Building Regulations are going to change. New regulations will require new-build properties to have a 31% reduction in carbon emissions. Unsurprisingly, from 2022 onwards the focus will be on carbon reduction. This will be accompanied, of course, with skills upgrades that are required. The amount of training courses on offer to installers will slowly increase over the next couple of months. Worcester Bosch will be offering courses in areas including heating design, hydrogen, low carbon heating and hot water solutions.
Ticking along So far, across the country we have seen a number of trials, some using a blend of gas with hydrogen and others pure hydrogen to help inform us on our strategy to meet government’s net-zero target. One such is the Keele University trial which commenced in October 2019 with the intention to deliver a blend of hydrogen and methane gas to 100 University homes and 30 buildings. Up to a 20% blend of hydrogen was injected into the gas grid to feed 130 properties, amounting to around 150 boilers fitted, given larger properties used more than one boiler. In contrast, the Winlaton trial in Gateshead has 668 properties, all residential, occupied properties which have been isolated from the main grid for injection of up to 20% hydrogen and 80% gas.
The boiler market The boiler market is expected to grow at its normal rate, and I don’t suspect to see any reason why we should be less optimistic. It is now particularly a replacement market: there will be some who will transition from gas boilers to heat pumps, but we believe the majority of high-volume builders will stay with gas boilers until they have to
20 DECEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
change them, which won’t be until 2025. There are not expected to be any changes in the market in terms of sales volumes, but we do see installers preparing for the inevitable in the background. We’ve seen an increase in enquiries from consumers on their concerns of the rise in gas prices and whether we believe it will continue or reduce. In light of Government statements and announcements about the Heat and Building strategy, we are also answering questions on whether people will be made to remove their gas or oil boiler in the future. These price changes will prompt homeowners to think of this as a trend, which isn’t going to stop, and they will look at how they can control their heating system through a more efficient boiler or heating system. If the homeowner does not have a condensing boiler, they may perhaps look at wastewater, heat recovery systems or other forms of technology, which will help reduce gas bills. Ultimately, the road to net-zero looks promising and we can expect a lot of new and exciting information and updates to emerge as we approach 2022. A BREAKTHROUGH FOR
Paul Wakefield, Managing Director at Grant UK, explains how R&D has enabled Grant to make its boilers biofuel compatible.
M
uch discussion has taken place in recent years about how rural, hard-to-heat homes can be decarbonised. Such properties tend to lose quite a lot of heat due to their build, construction type and limited insulation and to transform them into buildings suitable for an electrical heating system, such as a heat pump, would incur higher installation costs for the homeowner. An easier and more cost-effective alternative is therefore needed for these off-gas, rural homes which are currently being heated by oil. Grant Engineering has always positioned themselves as pioneers in the heating sector and recently, we welcomed a breakthrough with research into biofuels. This breakthrough will provide the alternative renewable heating solution these hard-to-heat homes need, reducing their carbon emissions with little disruption. The research has involved working with
OFTEC on more sustainable, waste derived low carbon liquid fuels and testing these in Grant boilers, enabling them to be biofuel compatible. Working with third level institutions, industry partners and renewable fuel producers, Grant’s R&D Team have completed trials, testing the use of biofuels in Grant’s boiler appliances. In the early days of research, the options available were narrowed down to a few potential bio and synthetic fuels that would achieve greenhouse gas reduction as well as being commercially viable. It began in 2010 with developing a boiler that could use a biofuel called FAME (fatty acid methyl esters). The R&D Team managed to use a 30% blend of FAME with regular kerosene successfully. However, challenges arose when increasing the FAME component above 30% resulting in fuel stability issues, particularly in cold conditions.
22 DECEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Breakthrough
The breakthrough came in 2020, during the testing and field trialing of boilers successfully using a 100% biofuel known as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). HVO feedstocks are generally used oils that contain rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil and non-food oils such as jatropha oil and algae oil as well as waste animal fats. Waste and residue oil are now also a substantial contributor to the feedstock which makes this biofuel even more sustainable. HVO is produced in the process of hydrogenation, which is treatment with hydrogen. Whereas FAME production is by esterification, the HVO process uses hydrogen and not methanol as the catalyst. As a result, it is not glycerine but propane that is the by-product of hydrogenation. Another important difference between the
022_PHPI_DEC21_Layout 1 05/11/2021 12:17 Page 23
two processes is the fact that hydrogenation removes all oxygen from the vegetable oils while esterification does not. It gives an advantage to the HVO production as it helps to avoid oxidation. While feedstock such as sunflower and soyabean oil can take from the food chain, a Finnish company called Neste is the largest producer of HVO in Europe and spends 70% of all its R&D investments in pursuit of suitable new raw materials, especially waste and residues. With year-on-year increases, the supply from waste and residue material reached 80% in 2019 which endorses the sustainability of the fuel. The use of HVO, either at 100% (which results in a reduction in carbon emissions of up to 88%) or a percentage blend with kerosene, will allow rural and hard-to-heat homes to transition to a renewable, green alternative from 100% kerosene at an affordable cost and with minimum disruption to their home lives.
This breakthrough will provide the alternative renewable heating solution these hard-to-heat homes need Conversion When a homeowner chooses a new Grant condensing boiler, they will be futureproofing their home because all boilers are compatible for use with HVO. When HVO supplies becomes available to a property, only a few minor modifications need to be made to the boiler, swapping it from kerosene oil to HVO. These modifications include adapting the size of the fuel injector nozzle, fuel pump pressure and blast tube, all of which can be carried out by the service engineer
during an annual service, making life simple for homeowners and for heating engineers. Older Grant condensing boilers may also be adapted to HVO but this may require a new biofuel burner that is matched with the specific boiler. Again, this can be carried out by a service technician during an annual service. The outcome of this research is incredibly exciting for the heating sector, specifically for those homes which are not currently suited to low temperature systems. While HVO supplies here in the UK continue to establish themselves so that more homes can access this biofuel, installers who fit a Grant boiler can provide their customers with a biofuel compatible boiler which can be converted to HVO operation simply and with minimal disruption.

ith advances in technology making life more streamlined every day, it is only natural home heating systems should make the most of the options going digital brings, too. As the main point of contact for the end-user, developments are being made all the time to ensure smart controls meet their needs, whilst also making life easier for installers. Recognising the benefits smart controls bring, Ideal Heating recently completed its own range of Halo programmable room thermostats. The company now has compatible options to suit its full range of Logic and Vogue boilers, whether combi, system or heat only, and installers can select 2-zone options for those with larger homes. Taking the time to demonstrate and explain key features to your customer is key to ensuring they’re able to make full use of the latest technology on their device.
Lizzie Wilkinson, Head of Domestic Product Management at Ideal Heating, discusses the benefits of smart controls for installers and their customers. In control There is a huge range of controls on the market today. For installers, it’s important to understand what motivates their customers, and to tailor recommendations accordingly. For example, while the busy, tech savvy homeowner may favour connected controls that are packed with adjustable settings, for others the priority is an easy-to-use simple control that can be adjusted easily. Smart controls can provide ultimate lifestyle-led heating. Users are able to set multiple, easily adjustable heating periods which can be varied throughout the day, one day to the next, giving homeowners the freedom to schedule their heating as they wish.
24 DECEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Users whose controls feature internet connectivity have extra flexibility, often controlled by an app on a user’s phone, homeowners can make changes in real-time, including when they’re out and about.
Going green While extra options for adjusting heating can make life easier for homeowners, it also helps them to play a more active role in limiting waste and increasing efficiency – assisting homeowners in reaching their green goals. Our Halo Wi-Fi control makes this even easier as it can use the location of a user’s mobile phone to determine if members of the household are within a pre-set ‘home’
024_PHPI_DEC21_Layout 1 05/11/2021 13:05 Page 25
boundary and therefore only heats the home when needed. Another key feature which helps users save energy is internet connected weather compensation. By reacting to external temperature changes, the boiler is constantly adjusting the heating to ensure it’s operating as efficiently as possible. Halo can also detect faults that might be limiting efficiency within the system. By notifying the homeowner, this reduces the amount of time a boiler may be working ineffectively.
Easy install
Taking the time to demonstrate and explain key features to your customer is key to ensuring they’re able to make full use of the latest technology
We know that a true indicator of a successful product is how easy and effective it is to use and install, and the Halo range was designed with features in mind to do just that. For those with a Halo model for a combi boiler, the thermostat pairs with a smart interface which plugs directly into the aperture on the front of the boiler with no need for wiring. After a simple ‘plug, pair and play’ install sequence – Halo can be up and running in minutes. Halo Heat and System also has many features that make it easy to install. For example, it includes an innovative Smart Wiring Centre which communicates with our Smart Interface using a wireless signal – reducing the number of wires usually associated with such installs.
Not only do we aim to make installers’ lives easier with simple design choices, we also implement handy benefits tailored to making the homeowner’s interaction with the control quick and easy, too. Each product in the range has a large, colour interface with a graphical representation of the temperature. All notifications are displayed in plain English so that it is simple for the homeowner to adjust settings to their preference.
Peace of mind Compliance is essential for installers, so ensuring products have time and temperature control and enhanced load compensation is an easy way to comply with Boiler Plus when installing a replacement boiler. There are a variety of smart controls on the market packed with features to help make heating the home an easy and straightforward process, whether you’re the customer or the installer. Tailoring the choice to make sure the control meets the needs of the user and ensuring they understand the key features behind it will give them peace of mind. Installers can also come away knowing they’ve fitted a hassle-free product. For more information, please www.rdr.link/pab015

DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS
When looking to maximise a heating system’s energy efficiency, installers should look to incorporate all the key elements from the same manufacturer – especially the boiler, flue and controls, says Sean Keleher, National Technical Manager at Navien.
ALL PARTS LEAD TO EFFICIENCY T
he latest oil and gas boilers have been designed to optimise energy efficiency, while ensuring ease of installation, servicing and commissioning. Both types are renowned for embracing the latest heat exchanger technology, often adapting stainless steel as the material of choice in order to provide longevity and resistance to corrosion. Indeed, the environmental credentials of condensing gas boilers have been known for years, while oil boilers using blue flame burners now offer equally impressive levels of energy efficiency. Installers need to be aware that a domestic heating system’s efficiency and performance depends on more than just the boiler alone. Other essential components, such as the flue and controls used, will all have an effect – and their overall impact can be heightened if engineers ensure everything comes from the same manufacturer.
Flue facts
Modern oil and gas boilers are suitable for a wide range of domestic applications – yet without having the correct flue in place, safety and effectiveness can be compromised. Installers will undoubtedly be aware of the Ø60/100 plastic concentric flue system frequently used on gas boilers;
26 DECEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
however, it is worth noting this is just as effective on oil-fired products, such as Navien’s own LCB700 Blue flame units. While flues are capable of being installed either horizontally (through the wall) or vertically (through the roof), the actual distance by which they can be extended varies between manufacturers. After all, the total flue lengths are determined by the ability of the boiler – which explains why some flues only extend to around 6-8m, yet other manufacturers can offer lengths up to 21m for improved flexibility.
Take control Gas and oil boilers should also be fitted with the latest heating controls, which have become integral to enhancing a system’s overall efficiency. This has actually led to many boilers having control units supplied with them in their boxes, so they can be
026_PHPI_DEC21_Layout 1 05/11/2021 12:24 Page 27
integrated into a system almost immediately. However, as with flues, each individual controller will vary between manufacturers in terms of functionality. Installers should note, manufacturers will have designed their own controls to perform most effectively with their own devices. A primary factor for this is the digital communications protocols used ensure a boiler and its associated controls can ‘talk’ to one another without error, providing accuracy, precision and reliability. Having constant communication between the thermostat and boiler provides accurate temperature control, while ensuring the correct amount of heat is provided to the system at the right time.
Get smart Developments in wireless technology, coupled with the ongoing evolution of smartphones, have also led to heating manufacturers creating their own apps, which provide end users with the ability to remotely access their controls. These advances in
Having constant communication between the thermostat and boiler provides accurate temperature control, while ensuring the correct amount of heat is provided to the system at the right time. connectivity allow boilers to be programmed or adjusted at the touch of a button, while some apps have the added benefit of receiving (and displaying) any relevant error messages or system notifications. Indeed, devices such as Navien’s Smart Plus feature multiple energy-saving functions utilising smartphone compatibility. For example, geofencing uses a person’s location to determine how the heating system operates, with the boiler switching
on when their phone is within a set distance from the property. There is even the option to connect multiple smartphones, allowing whole families or different household members to enjoy the latest in heating technology. Heating manufacturers will apply the same level of technical expertise to accessories such as flues and controls as they do to their boilers. Doing so results in all the essential elements being produced to an equally high standard, while the whole system will be consistent in terms of operation and energy efficiency. So, by ensuring each key component is produced by the same manufacturer, oil and gas installers can rest assured a heating system will work to its maximum potential – and efficiency. Plus, there’s the added benefit of knowing any training or technical requirements will all be handled by the same company. For more information please www.rdr.link/pab016

Peter says, “On a hot day you really need a garment made from a fabric that has the ultimate capacity for ventilation and moisture transport. That is why we at Snickers Workwear have chosen 37.5 technology to provide hardworking craftsmen and women with the coolest experience.” 37.5 is a fabric technology – largely used in high-performance sportswear – designed for ventilation and moisture transport. Instead of being applied to the surface of the fabric, its fibres are woven into the fabric. This means they never get washed out so you get the full benefit wear after wear.
While style, comfort and functionality have been key drivers in Snickers Workwear clothing development over the years, fabric performance and sustainability is now central to the technical design of the garments and footwear just as it is in performance sports and leisurewear. The result is environmentally-friendly, ergonomically designed dual-purpose working clothes and footwear that are not only designed to meet the physical demands that tradesmen and women face at work in the winter months, but are also ideal for some sports and leisure activities – and reducing your carbon footprint too. LISTEN UP Makita UK has added a number of new tools to its XGT 40VMax line-up – including a jobsite radio.
Impact Wrenches 쑴 The new TW007G and TW008G impact wrenches from Makita offer four speed options, allowing users to adjust the output to match the task for optimum operation. These machines can deliver up to 2,900 impacts per minute and reach a no-load speed of up to 2,300rpm. Both models also feature a trigger switch that allows operators to activate full speed mode at the press of a button. User comfort has also been considered as both the TW007G and TW008G feature a rubberised soft grip, designed to allow the machines to be used for extended periods of time without fatigue. In addition, the LED job light means the work area is illuminated for clear visibility and safety. Both models also feature an electric brake which quickly stops rotation for increased operator safety.
DAB Radio (with Bluetooth) 쑶 Knowing many tradespeople enjoying listening to some music while working, Makita’s MR007GZ jobsite radio can receive both DAB and DAB+ radio stations and is equipped with Bluetooth to wirelessly connect to mobile phones, within a range of 10m to play music from the device. For added durability it has also been IP65 rated for dust and shower protection and features elastomer bumpers. The radio is also designed to ensure users can adjust the output to their preferences. It includes six selectable sound modes to suit various music genres and ‘My Equaliser Mode’ enables users to adjust the treble, midrange and bass to achieve their desired sound quality. Helpfully, the MR007GZ can be powered using Makita’s CXT, LXT and XGT batteries.
Two Port Charger 쑱 To help users keep their tools powered up, the DC40RB can charge two XGT batteries at the same time. It can charge a 4.0Ah XGT 40VMax battery within 45minutes and utilises real time battery data to optimise the charging process and prevent damage. The DC40RB also features a status indicator light, so users know when their batteries are charged and ready for use. Additionally, the unit can also be used to charge 18V LXT batteries, in conjunction with the ADP10 adaptor. This means that professionals only need one charger to keep their LXT and XGT products powered throughout the day.

THE DEAL
Andy Cummins, Senior Product Manager at Geocel, identifies the key product attributes of a high-quality MS Polymer and hybrid sealant.
P
rior to 2008, two of the most popular sealant types available when it came to bonding and sealing were silicone and acrylic. Silicone sealants offer excellent UV and colour stability in addition to extreme temperature and water resistance. They are ideal for connection and expansion joints in sanitary areas, floors and walls; however, they are not paintable, and do not have a strong resistance to abrasion. On the other hand, acrylic sealants are best used for jointing, caulking and filling in hairline cracks. With no sanding required, they can be overpainted in just one hour. Nevertheless, they have limited movement capability and are not ideal for applications subject to regular water contact. Recognising the value of combining the benefits of both options, Geocel launched the first MS Polymer sealant (also called ‘hybrid sealants’) in 2008. This sealant possesses the paintability of acrylic as well as the flexibility and UV stability of silicone. It was also incredibly versatile, with an ability to bond and cure underwater. Due to being a non-staining product, MS Polymer sealants can crucially be applied to a variety of surfaces, including marble or
granite as well as plastic, tile, wood, stone surfaces and others. This product has consequently become very popular. In fact, according to research carried out by GFK in 2018, MS Polymer sales accounted for 22% of total sealant sales in builders’ merchants over the course of a single year.
Key attributes In order to identify the ideal solution, plumbers should prioritise three sealant attributes. First of all, its compatibility with substrates must be considered – does the product perform consistently well when applied to a variety of surfaces? It is equally crucial to ensure that the correct sealant is chosen for the specific joint design and its expected movement. Finally, the sealant must suit the service conditions. Does the product offer the right finish that will stand the test of time? Is it water and mould resistant? There are products on the market that deliver on all of these criteria. Geocel, creator of the first MS Polymer, for example, felt it was time to revisit the market, launching a new sealant range - THE WORKS PRO.
Premium sealant Available in a new ‘whiter’ white, THE WORKS PRO is a premium sealant

designed to provide a high strength bond or a water-tight, permanently flexible seal on almost any surface, curing fast in all conditions, even underwater. This versatile product is also highly weather resistant, with excellent UV stability and does not leave any stain. Another product in the range is THE WORKS PRO X. This ultimate strength adhesive gives 50% more grab than traditional grab adhesives. Providing an ultra-fast bond on virtually any surface, including wet surfaces, it is also incredibly resistant to UV, abrasion and impacts – offering a long-term, weather-proof bond. THE WORKS PRO is also now available in foils, making it compatible with the ecoSEAL system that is designed to reduce plastic waste. This is achieved by replacing the traditional plastic cartridge with a reusable sleeve alternative. Simply place the foil into the sleeve, cut the top of the foil and use as normal with any standard gun. To learn more about THE WORKS PRO www.rdr.link/pab031 range

VAN ABOUT TOWN
The new Nissan Townstar features petrol and fully electric powertrain options.
A
s a manufacturer, Nissan has already been charging ahead with electric models for some years now. Indeed, its e-NV200 was one of the early pioneers in the sector and its new compact light commercial vehicle, the Townstar, continues in that tradition – but with the addition of a petrol engine option. Not only that, but the manufacturer is claiming no less than a suite of 20+ new technologies across the Townstar portfolio, as well as a versatile range of configurations. The fully electric version features a 44kWh battery and, as such, is a solution in sync with tougher emissions standards and the onward march of urban low emission zones. The new van will offer 245Nm of torque and 177 miles of range – a 43 per cent improvement over the outgoing e-NV200. Alternatively, a 1.3-litre petrol engine model will be available, which is compliant with the latest Euro 6d-Full emissions regulations and produces 130HP and 240Nm of torque.
Safety first Amongst those aforementioned technologies, safety and driver assistance features very prominently. Side Wind Assist and Trailer Sway Assist, is joined by Intelligent Emergency Braking featuring Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection and Junction Assist, whilst there’s also Hands-Free Parking and Intelligent Cruise Control. Moreover, Nissan is integrating its Around View Monitor (AVM) solution into the Townstar. Using a system of cameras, a 360-degree overview of the area around the vehicle is displayed to the driver. When behind users can also enjoy the ProPILOT advanced driver assistance system. Supporting motorists with highway driving, the feature allows the vehicle to automatically slow to a full stop and accelerate by following the vehicle ahead, as well as keeping it centred in the lane – even around a gentle curve.
Versatile solution For a tradesman the business end of any van is the load bay and the Townstar offers up to 4.3m3 of space, with 800kg of cargo capacity. That area is accessed by large sliding doors on the side with the option of 60/40 French doors with 180-degree opening at the rear. There is also a suite of smart storage solutions and a dedicated space for on-board office tools. For anyone needing a trailer there’s 1,500kg of towing capacity on offer.
42 DECEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Elsewhere, connectivity is covered with E-Call, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and wireless phone charging all of which are accessible via an 8in. touchscreen, which in the fully electric all-new Townstar is linked to a 10in. digital combimeter in front of the driver.
Sustainability The Townstar is the latest vehicle to be introduced under the Nissan NEXT transformation plan, which prioritises sustainability. It’s also solution that has been specifically targeted at SMEs, and those operating in urban environments where a compact unit will come into its own. Much of the Townstar’s styling, including the seat and door trims, centre console and instrument panel, are derived from the same manufacturer’s Ariya electric crossover, and reflect inherent passenger-car-like comfort as a consequence. That’s a theme that continues through the signature standard LED headlamps and an aerodynamic front shield integrating an Kumiko pattern and a V-motion design with daytime running lamps. Likewise, the petrol version stands out with an interlock grille and ‘air-curtains’, which optimise airflow around the front bumper and front wheels, reducing drag and improving fuel consumption. TO BIDET, OR NOT TO BIDET Bidet-style toilets are becoming more popular in the UK. Unfortunately, so is ‘DIY plumbing’, and inadequate installation alongside ablutionary showers poses a serious contamination risk to water systems. Jerry Whiteley, Technical Manager at the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), explains.
B
idet-style toilets combine the traditional toilet with bidet functionality, which is ideal for saving space in homes. Remember nationwide toilet paper shortages during the early-days of the COVID-19 pandemic? It is reported that this accelerated a longer-standing trend of increased sales of bidet-style toilets. Often, these are combined with ablutionary showers which are designed for personal cleansing while using the toilet.
The sanitation risks While bidet-style toilets are common across Europe and the rest of the world, the Victorian nature of the UK plumbing network means significant adaptation is required for them to become more commonplace in the UK. As such, a careful approach is critical when installing bidet-style toilets and ablutionary showers to prevent backflow from the WC into the wholesome water supply – including drinking water. When an ablution hose is rested in a toilet bowl, or other areas of potential contamination such as a bath or washbasin, there is a significant risk that water will travel back through the hose. This is down to pressure changes in the system, which can result due to burst water mains or opening of other outlets in the home. On a basic level, ensuring that the hose itself is not long enough to allow it to rest in a toilet bowl should be the first step in preventing contamination. Further, bidet seats that contain a water jet may be located below the water line in the case of a toilet blockage. Both of these run the risk of contaminating the water supply, affecting both the home itself and
surrounding properties. Preventing backflow is paramount, and there are a couple of ways to achieve this. The most optimum approach involves an ‘interposed cistern’ with an air gap (Water Regulations G15.9 & G15.10, section 6 pages 28,29,30,31). By taking this approach, water from the bidet or WC pan cannot get back past the air-gap at the inlet valve in the cistern, and into the wholesome water supply. Alternatively, using a pipe interrupter (Type DC device) can work. This can, however, present technical design challenges, with other problems potentially arising from reduced water pressure and flow – so it is vital to give careful consideration before taking this route. This is where it is crucial to engage with a qualified engineer who is competent in delivering this type of installation.
The dangers of bad plumbing Poorly installed bidet-style toilets with ablutionary showers are a genuine public health issue, particularly as the risk extends beyond the users themselves. It is a problem that is being exacerbated by poor workmanship, with cost-savings concerningly being prioritised over high-quality installation. DIY plumbing is a phenomenon that has grown as more information is readily available on the internet. The issue with this is twofold: firstly, the installation is being carried out by someone who is not qualified or competent, and therefore likely to make mistakes or lack precision. Secondly, much of the information surrounding bidet-style toilets is based on international standards. This means that products purchased online, as well as
44 DECEMBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Poorly installed bidet-style toilets with ablutionary showers are a genuine public health issue. accompanying installation information, are not compliant with UK water regulations. We also continue to see examples of rogue traders undercutting the prices of appropriate installation by offering cheaper, but ultimately dangerous shortcuts. This could include simply using a double-check valve in the ablutionary hose, despite the fact this is only appropriate for category 3 fluids. This is concerning given that anything that may contain faecal matter is category 5, and therefore needs a more robust approach, as outlined above.
Closing thoughts With bidet-style toilets growing in popularity in the UK, qualified plumbing engineers have a critical role to play in safeguarding public health. Much of this relies on educating consumers about the importance of avoiding cost-cutting, and outlining how the system changes that accompany bidet installation are necessary to prevent contamination.

PRODUCT FOCUS
ARISTON INTRODUCES NEW
HEAT PUMP WATER HEATER As the heating industry places a stronger emphasis on sustainability, Ariston has launched its new A+ rated Nuos Plus Wi-Fi heat pump water heater.
A
vailable as either a 200-litre direct (200D) or 250-litre indirect (250I) model, the units combine a floor standing unvented cylinder with an efficient air source heat pump water heater. The products boast a COP of up to 3.14, while producing 51dB of noise. Building upon the company’s Nuos platform, the new models offer an extended operating temperature range of -10° to 42°C. The Nuos Plus Wi-Fi 200D has been designed to heat up from cold in under four hours and BusBridgeNet technology allows the Nuos Plus Wi-Fi 250I to be fully integrated with the company’s boilers via the company’s Sensys controls.
Take control The new range offers a touch-button interface with new HMI – and Wi-Fi control via the Aqua Ariston Net app. The app enables users to shuffle through modes and turn the unit on remotely for a hot shower at the perfect time. Ariston has also introduced new operating modes, including daily/weekly programming options and I-Memory. The Programming mode allows users to create their own daily and weekly pre-heating schedule to maximise comfort, whereas I-Memory learns water usage habits and automatically creates a pre-heating schedule. For example, in the first week, the unit will be constantly learning, then during the second week, the Nuos Plus Wi-Fi implements its findings to activate the heating schedule.
Need a boost? The heat pump water heaters benefit from three different modes: ‘Green’ mode, which
Nuos Plus Wi-Fi has been designed with sustainability in mind ensures the only heating source is the heat pump itself; the maximum hot water temperature achievable in this mode is 62°C. For faster reheat times, ‘Comfort’ mode can be activated, with the heating element either replacing or assisting the heat pump to replenish the water as quickly as possible. Finally, ‘Boost’ mode can be activated to switch on the heat pump and heating element at the same time until the desired temperature is reached. For safety and hygiene, each Nuos Plus Wi-Fi has an anti-legionella function, which regularly heats the contents of the tank to 65°C, pasteurising the water and preventing bacterial growth. There is also an anti-freeze feature, which keeps the stored water at a minimum temperature, even when the unit is turned off –

maximising protection during the cold winter months. Commenting on the new heat pump water heater, Victoria Gutierrez, Head of Marketing at Ariston, said: “Nuos Plus Wi-Fi has been designed with sustainability in mind – and is 80% more efficient than a hot water cylinder of the same capacity. Not only does it learn from usage habits, only heating water when required, connecting Nuos to Aqua Ariston Net offers further benefits, such as temperature regulation and energy monitoring.” She continued: “Units can be easily integrated with other heating products, including boilers and heat pumps, thanks to Ariston’s Sensys interface, which helps create a fully ‘Eco’ system. Installation is also straightforward, thanks to Nuos Plus Wi-Fi’s innovative ‘plug and play’ design, which enables it to be fitted quickly, without requiring F-Gas qualifications. It truly is the future of smart, sustainable comfort.” For more details please www.rdr.link/pab040

STELRAD RADIATORS TURN UP THE HEAT AT SCOTTISH COLLEGE
F
orth Valley College is a provider of education and training delivering more than 750 courses from its main campuses in Alloa, Falkirk and Stirling. The Falkirk Campus opened in 2020. Included in this new campus was a heating system designed to ensure students and staff were comfortable at all times of the year. Part of the heating system was a variety of Stelrad radiators used throughout the campus: a mix of more than 300 Stelrad Planar radiators –– both horizontal and vertical models – alongside 40 Concord Lo-Line floor mounted radiators and several of Stelrad’s low surface temperature radiators. “We were delighted to see our radiators specified for inclusion in this prestigious project,” said Stelrad’s Head of Marketing, Chris Harvey. “We have seen our radiators selected for an increasing number of large-scale, education related projects in schools, colleges and universities across the UK in the past couple of years. This building is leading edge and highlights how well our radiators can contribute to comfort in larger commercial properties that require efficient sharing of heat around the premises.” Chris continued: “We were delighted to see a selection of our radiators chosen to work together in different parts of the
building where particular visual qualities were required. We’re seeing our vertical radiators chosen more often to provide effective heating, but with the additional aesthetic aims of maximising on the visual appearance of the radiators. And the use of our LST range, where safety is the prime concern and there is a need for a ‘safe to touch’ option, is the icing on the cake in this project.” To find out more about the Planar, Concord and LST radiators www.rdr.link/pab041 installed in this project please

When paired to the neoHub via a WiFi connection, the Uflex Neostat V2 can then be controlled remotely through the neoHub app which gives homeowners control of their system anytime and anywhere. The Uflex Edge shares many of the features that the Neostat V2 has, with additional functionality to allow for greater automation within the home. Pairing with wireless air sensors, the Uflex Edge can accurately sense temperature changes within a room and is suited to open plan properties. Grant UK is also adding a new type of pipe to its underfloor heating range. PEX-AL-PEX Pipe will be available for use with installations of the Uflex underfloor heating system. The pipe is 16mm in diameter and is compatible with all the Uflex system components.
The Mini Ecobooster is an aerator for the kitchen tap that can be switched from water-saving flow to full capacity in an instant, allowing the tap to be on eco-mode for general use but boosted to a fuller flow when required. This new flow device, which can be retrofitted to most kitchen taps, protrudes slightly from the tap and can be switched easily into boost mode by pulling the sleeve upwards. After closing the tap, it always switches back into the default water saving mode.

NEW SOFTWARE TO ENSURE F-GAS COMPLIANCE Joblogic and Refcom have collaborated to launch a software module in the UK that ensures F-Gas compliance. It also makes it simpler and faster for HVAC engineers to comply as they can now input the data directly into a compliant logbook via a mobile app. Legislation demands that an engineer must track and record any movement of refrigerant gas in an official logbook. There also needs to be a back-office system that shows all the work completed on equipment. Says Greg Hill, Principal Consultant at Joblogic: “While it is possible to record work completed on paper-based systems this can be time consuming and lead to errors when a second person inputs the data into the back-office system. With each piece of equipment and all the cylinders having their own logbooks, it can take time to find all the necessary paperwork, discover what needs completing on an asset, do the work and then fill in each of the logbooks with all the correct information. “Using the Refcom F-Gas Tracking Module, the engineer will know what work they need to do before they arrive to ensure that they have the right tools and equipment to get it right first time. Having completed the work they simply input the relevant information into the Joblogic Refcom App on their phone or tablet which will then automatically populate the online logbooks and the back-office systems to save time and avoid any errors.” To discover more please

The first video looked at demounting Hep2O fittings.
In the summer PB Plumber ran through how he helped a new customer by repairing a boiler that had been condemned by another plumber. He outlines the problems, which included a wiring issue and a problem with a two-port valve, before solving the problem at the customer’s house. To watch the video…
