VIEWPOINT
Challenging times The last 12 months has seen unprecedented challenges with lives, jobs, families and businesses devastated by Covid-19. Social distancing and wearing face coverings are ‘the new normal’ and both at home and in the workplace we have all had to adapt to new rules and guidance. But while many things have changed, basic requirements remain the same: homes and businesses need heating and everyone needs clean water and sanitation. Many in the sector have gone above and beyond to help charities and local communities, but by safely performing everyday tasks plumbers and heating engineers are ensuring families are living in warm homes and businesses remain operational. Covid-19 has dominated this year, but other stories have also hit the headlines. We’ve taken a brief look at these in our review of 2020 (page 21) – plus you’ll find some of the ‘top products’ that have stood out over the last twelve months on page 22. But we are also looking forward – with thoughts on what some of the trends could be for 2021 (page 12) – plus to get the new-year off to a good start there are opportunities to win wireless controls and a heat gun. From the entire PHPI team, best wishes and stay safe.

News PROMOTION OF WATER EFFICIENT PRODUCTS CALLED FOR A new survey carried out amongst plumbing and heating engineers has highlighted the need for more support to promote the use of water efficient products, says Unified Water Label MD, Yvonne Orgill. The research, carried out by the CIPHE, found that more than 50% of respondents said customers rarely (40.74%) or never ask (13.11%) for environmental attribute based recommendations. Yvonne said: “Whilst this figure of 53.85% is high, it also reflects that almost one in two consumers are asking about environmental considerations. Bathroom manufacturers have invested in bringing these products to market but there is a gap in the chain, as installers and retailers are failing to do their bit and bring these Unified Water Label MD, products to consumer’s attention. Yvonne Orgill “With only one in three respondents seeing an increase in consumers asking about efficiency measures, there is huge scope for them to help inform those consumers about the products that are available.” “We have work to do at the Unified Water Label to help installers become more aware of the label and how they can use the database to identify products that carry the label. We must also help installers understand that they are missing an opportunity to change consumer behaviour and support them in making more informed choices.”
TOOL THEFT COSTS TRADESPEOPLE OVER £5,500 A survey of 1,037 trades commissioned by Honcho, a reverse-auction marketplace for financial services, has revealed that tool theft costs tradespeople a whopping £5,584 on average each time their van gets broken into. Van theft not only sets workers back financially due to needing to replace the stolen goods, but it also costs them work and income in the meantime. According to Honcho’s data, having tools and supplies stolen during a van break-in puts the average tradesperson out of work for 30 days. On top of the cost of replacing tools and materials, the survey found that the average tradesperson who had suffered van theft then lost an additional £5,982 in income as a result of not being able to carry out the jobs they had booked in. Graeme Stoker from Honcho, commented: “Van theft remains one of the biggest obstacles for tradespeople in the UK. This is why we’re launching van insurance on Honcho – to make finding the right van insurance policy simple and transparent.” To find out more about Honcho van insurance

SPECIAL REPORT | Polypipe turns 40
The ground-breaking ceremony for the Rainbow Gardens for Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw Hospital Trust. Staff from Polypipe, local businesses and the Hospital Trust
STEPPING UP Polypipe marked its 40th anniversary in 2020, but with the onset of the pandemic it turned from planned celebrations to providing support to local and national good causes, as Jason Nightingale, Head of Marketing at Polypipe Building Products, explains.
P
olypipe Building Products was planning for 2020 to be a memorable year, but could not have predicted how the business would have to adapt and change, as well as actively support local organisations at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the company remains in a strong position to make sure plumbing professionals readily have the products they need to make up for lost time during this most extraordinary of years. This year the company marks 40 years since its beginnings on a small Doncaster industrial estate, during which it has grown
to become the third largest employer in the South Yorkshire town. Plans at Polypipe were well under way for a range of celebratory events when the world was engulfed by COVID-19 and the UK Government ordered a national lockdown, dramatically changing the best laid plans of every individual, group, business and organisation in the country. The company had to work quickly to adapt to the new circumstances to ensure it fulfilled essential orders and it has also stepped in to provide a range of support measures for local and national causes.

Supporting frontline workers In the early part of national lockdown, with the NHS calling out for PPE equipment, Polypipe donated half a tonne of polypropylene to students at Bradfield Technology College who used the material to manufacture more than 12,000 visors for health care workers. Another 500 kilograms of polypropylene was also donated to the Silverstone Technology Cluster (STC), in Northamptonshire, to manufacture crucial supplies of equipment for frontline healthcare workers across Northamptonshire. The Silverstone site was crafting supplies that were then donated to care homes, hospitals and community services in Northamptonshire and medical staff from the armed forces.
T N
008_PHPI_WINTER20_Layout 1 30/10/2020 14:50 Page 9
Donations and collections Employees also organised protective equipment donations and collections from other Doncaster businesses which included thousands of plastic aprons for the Doncaster South primary care network, supporting 43 practices across the town. In addition, Polypipe was able to provide a truck and driver to support a community group delivering hot meals to vulnerable people. As the lockdown situation continued into May and home learning became the new normal for many families, Polypipe donated funds through the Northern Powerhouse Partnership to provide disadvantaged students in south Yorkshire with the computer equipment needed to enable them to continue their studies from home.
Consistent supply Across the UK, sole traders and heating professionals have had to deal with the perfect storm of challenging circumstances, but it is testament to the core strength of Polypipe’s manufacturing capability that a consistent access to a supply of its high quality product ranges was ensured throughout the year. The company’s approach of working with industry professionals to invest in and introduce time-saving solutions has proven to be vital in a year when maintaining stock levels for merchants and purchasers has been an immense challenge for manufacturers.
The company’s Neale Road site

As the lockdown came into force Polypipe focused manufacturing at its three Doncaster sites to ensure that the supply levels of the PolySoil™ drainage system and its essential plastic piping and fittings ranges, such as PolyMax and PolyPlumb, remained consistent across the country.
Time saving solutions The availability of products designed, developed and manufactured with a ‘fit and forget’ ethos is more important than ever,
This year the company marks 40 years since its beginnings on a small Doncaster industrial estate
now that time for installers to complete work is more limited and there are constraints around freely entering homes and buildings. Installers will need products that can be fitted to the highest standard, first time and with no need for call backs. This is where manufacturing and distributing products direct from Doncaster has been an advantage for customers, with products such as Polypipe Pro-Straight continuing to feature on available materials lists across the country. This year was meant to be a time of celebration for the business and all those associated with it, however it has become a poignant reminder that a company is more than the sum of its parts and the products and services it provides – it is a collection of people that want to play an integral part of their community, and also have a long-standing passion for the industry it serves. As the first peak of the pandemic receded, the Polypipe team was also able to reflect on its place in the fabric of Doncaster. Representatives from the company were able to visit Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals and hand over a donation of £5,000 to kick start a fund that will help to establish memorial gardens at the hospital to remember those who lost their lives to COVID-19. SPECIAL REPORT | CE marking
MARKING TIME Gary Perry, MD of Altecnic, talks to us about the changes coming in January to CE marking as a result of the UK leaving the EU, and the implications for installers.
Y
ou will probably have heard, seen and know about ‘CE marking’. It appears on many products that are traded on the single market in the European Economic Area. The letters ‘CE’ mean that the manufacturer has checked that these products meet EU safety, health or environmental requirements and that the product complies with EU legislation. It also allows free movement of products within the European market.
New UKCA marking
Goods can carry both the CE and UKCA markings so long as they are fully compliant with both UK and EU regulations.
With the UK leaving the EU, the Government has created a new UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking which will apply to most goods currently subject to the CE marking for items that are being sold in Great Britain. The new UKCA marking can be used from 1st January 2021. But, to allow businesses time to adjust to the change, they will still be able to use the CE marking for a further year – in the majority of cases until January 2022. However, the UKCA marking will not be recognised on the EU market or in Northern Ireland. So, products currently requiring a CE marking will still need one for sale in the EU from 1st January 2021. Goods can carry both the CE and UKCA markings so long as they are fully compliant with both UK and EU regulations.
What it means Companies will need to use the new UKCA marking after 1st January 2021 if all of the following apply. The product: ● is for the market in Great Britain ● is covered by legislation which requires
the UKCA marking
10 WINTER 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
● requires mandatory third-party
conformity assessment ● conformity assessment has been carried
out by a UK conformity assessment body and the conformity assessment files haven’t been transferred from the UK body to an EU recognised body before 1st January 2021 However, this does not apply to existing stock, for example if the product was fully manufactured and ready to place on the market before 1st January 2021. In this situation the goods can still be sold in Great Britain with a CE marking even if covered by a certificate of conformity issued by a UK body. From January 2022, the UKCA marking must, in the majority of cases, be affixed directly to the product.
What to look out for As a result of these changes installers will need to remain vigilant that the products that they buy are marked correctly and therefore safe and legal to install in the UK. Without the proper marking, the products being used may not be manufactured to high or legal standards. Here at Altecnic, we pride ourselves on only supplying approved and accredited products into the plumbing and heating market. To this end, we are working with all relevant industry partners to keep ahead of the changes in product marking regulation so we can assist our customers through the transition. Our aim is to make the switch from CE marking to UKCA markings a smooth one for all our stakeholders. To find out more about UKCA marking www.rdr.link/pv007

DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS
EMERGING TRENDS IN 2021 As we reach the end of the year, it is not only a chance to look back at achievements and challenges overcome in the past 12 months, it is also an opportunity to look to the future. Here, Jamie Bennett, Engineering Director at Drayton, discusses some of the growing trends heating engineers can expect to hear more about in the new year. Connected Home
Streamlined maintenance
It’s safe to say that one area that has seen large growth in 2020, and is expected to continue into 2021, is the demand for connected technology in the home. In a recent Delta-EE report, it was highlighted that smart thermostats are continuing to lead the way here in the UK when it comes to connected products. However, smart TRVs are not far behind. As more homeowners begin to understand the benefits of multi-zoning and room-to-room temperature control, it’s expected that the annual sales of smart TRVs will double by 2021, presenting a large opportunity for heating engineers to up-sell these types of systems. With this in mind, it’s also expected that smart heating control manufacturers will begin to develop platforms that allow homeowners to manage a wider range of products all from one app. For example, Wiser already has this capability, allowing users to control its Wiser Plug through the Wiser Heat app, and is reviewing ways to incorporate products such as lighting in the future.
Whilst this is something already offered by some manufacturers, remote diagnostics is something that is set to grow in the coming year and is already being explored as an upgrade for Wiser. As technology becomes more connected, it is opening the way for manufacturers to offer higher levels of automation. In the future, for example, the heating system will be able to monitor its own performance and proactively identify potential system faults and call out a
heating engineer to fix this before the homeowner is even inconvenienced. Not only will automation and remote diagnostics help to improve customer satisfaction, but it will also help to streamline the work of heating engineers. By being able to log in and remotely identify the cause of an issue, installers can save time on visiting sites to determine which part they need and only order in the items they know are required to complete the job.
Home Energy Management
with homeowners looking to improve their homes, there’s likely to be a rise in the number of those servicing and upgrading their heating system in spring and summer.
12 WINTER 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
As we continue to look for new carbon-neutral ways to heat the 23 million homes in the UK that currently rely on gas boilers, it is expected that electric heating methods will become more widely adopted including heat pumps, electric IR radiators, and under-floor heating. As this happens, the industry is now shifting away from the concept of ‘Smart Heating’ to ‘Home Energy Management’. According to a Delta-EE report, Home Energy Management is expected to grow by 31% every year over the next five years.
012_PHPI_WINTER20_Layout 1 30/10/2020 15:20 Page 13
The concept of home energy management looks at how different technologies within the home can all work together in order to optimise performance, and after an electric car, electric heating is likely to be the second biggest consumption for most households. In the future, energy suppliers may offer incentives and better tariffs to their customers in exchange for allowing the energy supplier to optimise their home heating. This would give suppliers the ability to better manage the demand placed on the grid whist catering for the homeowners needs. Additionally, home energy management systems will be able to learn exactly how to optimise energy storage and usage based on homeowner behaviours. For example, the system will register that the solar panels installed collected the most energy between 10am and 4pm, with a peak in energy usage at 6pm when the whole family is home. It’ll then learn based on the remaining energy stored when the optimum time is to start charging the electric car in order to be ready to go by 8am the next day when the homeowner needs to leave the house. Whilst this type of fully automated home might be some way off, it’s important that heating engineers are educating themselves as early as possible to be in a
position to up-skill and adopt this new technology as part of their offering.
Investment in home improvement Following the longer periods spent at home during 2020, there was a significant increase in homeowners looking to make home improvements, and with working from home likely to continue into the future, this is something we expect to see more investment in throughout 2021. As part of this, improvements to the heating system are likely to be top of the list for many homeowners.
Whilst annual servicing is recommended, we know that customers usually overlook this. However, with homeowners looking to improve their homes, there’s likely to be a rise in the number of those servicing and upgrading their heating system in spring and summer. This presents heating engineers with an opportunity to up-sell system upgrades that will offer improved efficiencies, such as smart heating controls like Wiser that are designed with intuitive features. Following a year of uncertainty, it is clear that 2021 is going to bring with it a host of new opportunities for heating engineers. No matter what these developments might be, it is important installers keep on top of training and remain informed on the latest industry updates in order to put their business in the best position for the future. DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS
TALKING HEAT
ATAG has recently launched a 14-year warranty across its range of high-end boilers. We asked ATAG Sales Director David Stolton about the company's heating technology and the new warranty packages.
Q
What range of boilers is available from ATAG? Including any specific efficiency ratings and flow rates. At ATAG we’re committed to producing technologically advanced heating equipment that’s built to last. Our precision-engineered i range of boilers are the most efficient in Europe as a result of our iCon heat exchanger. All our models are available from 15kW to 40kW, offer low noise outputs of between 42-46db and share the same standard compact dimensions of h700mm x w440mm x d355mm. They are all also available in models that fit inside kitchen cupboards with a depth of just 275mm. The iC Economiser Plus combi boilers help drive down gas bills and protect the environment by recycling lost heat. Economiser Plus technology reuses flue gases for a second time, resulting in optimum energy efficiency. With an ErP ‘A’ rating for heating and hot water they provide 17 litres of hot water per minute at 35C rise. They also offer levels of central heating output from between 23.2kW to 31.2kW, contributing to significant delta T flow rates. ATAG iC combi boilers offer savings of up to £320 a year on gas bills. Compact and quiet, they are the perfect choice if a customer has limited space.
ATAG iR regular boilers offer a simple and straightforward boiler replacement solution. Energy efficient, with simple-to-use controls, extensive flue solutions mean you can site the boiler almost anywhere in a home. They have been awarded an ErP ‘A’ rating for heating.
Q
Some ATAG boilers feature ‘Economiser Plus’, what is it and how does it work?
ATAG OneZone Controllers operate remotely via WiFi allowing a customer to control their hot water and heating on the move. ATAG iS system boilers are among the most energy efficient in Europe on account of their in-built ErP pump and are ideal for homes where the heating system includes a hot water storage cylinder. With the pump and controls contained within the boiler casing, they offer a simple and space-saving solution that has achieved an ErP ‘A’ rating for heating.
14 WINTER 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Inside our Economiser Plus range of boilers there is a Passive Flue Gas Heat Recovery (PFGHR) device. It works by harnessing the residual heat left in the boiler after hot water has been heated. Rather than allow this energy from the flue gasses to be released as waste, the PFGHR essentially recycles them. It results in cold incoming water being preheated before reaching the plate heat exchanger in the boiler – increasing its calorific uptake, which in turns leads to a higher delta T flow rate and lower gas consumption for the same hot water output.
Q
With consumers often wanting instant control of their heating, are any smart controls available? ATAG OneZone Controllers operate remotely via WiFi allowing a customer to
014_PHPI_WINTER20_Layout 1 30/10/2020 15:06 Page 15
control their hot water and heating on the move - and heat up to six different areas of their home to the temperature they want. All of the heating and hot water zones are easily and separately controllable on separate time/temperature schedules through the OneZone app or web portal, which is fully compatible with Apple HomeKit and Amazon Alexa. The smart solution provides consumers with real-time information about energy consumption helping them to cut their annual gas bill by up to 12%, while also allowing ATAG Selected Partners (ASPs) to remotely run full diagnostics of all aspects of the system.
Q
What level of warranty is available on your products?
We’ve recently launched an industry-leading 14-year warranty across our range of high-end boilers. It comes as ATAG scientists have optimised our range, providing high end filters and water treatment packs that can be used in the installation to greatly extend the life of our boilers. The new 14-year warranty includes both parts and labour when annual servicing is
completed by an ATAG Selected Partner (ASP). To unlock the extended warranty ASPs need to bolt on an Adey Atom filter, Water Treatment Pack and One Zone control when they purchase direct. All ATAG boilers come with a 10-year warranty as standard on all parts and labour.
Q
For those unfamiliar with the company, what is the history of ATAG? ATAG has been designing and manufacturing boilers for over 70 years. In that time we’ve set the highest standards for energy efficiency and engineering excellence across the world. In 1983 we chose to focus solely on manufacturing super-efficient heating
rdr.link
products and became active in the UK in 2001. In 2013, we launched our iCon heat exchanger, the beating heart inside all of our boilers. Made with high grade stainless steel it carries a lifetime replacement guarantee. At ATAG we’re passionate about what we do. We’re proud of our high performing and super-efficient boilers and firmly believe that, due to their build quality, they have the lowest cost of ownership in Europe. In fact, it’s this commitment that’s led ATAG to being rated number one boiler manufacturer on independent review site Trustpilot, voted for by UK consumers. DOMESTIC HEATING & CONTROLS
SAY HALO TO THE LATEST CONTROLS WIN! PHPI looks over the latest wireless programmable room thermostat range from Ideal Heating.
W
ith homeowners demanding ever higher levels of functionality and intelligence in their homes, heating controls have evolved dramatically in the last few years. So if you haven’t already, perhaps now is the time to familiarise yourself with terms like Geolocation, gateways and button interface. One company that recently launched a new offer in this area is Ideal Heating, whose new wireless programmable room thermostat range has been designed not only to look stylish, but also be easy to use and – importantly for any installer – feature a straightforward installation process. Called Halo both the Combi RF and Halo Combi Wi-Fi are compatible with the company’s Logic and Vogue combi boilers, and promise set up times of minutes.
Geolocation
Geolocation uses the location of users’ mobile phones to determine whether anyone from the household is inside a pre-set ‘home’ boundary, and automatically turns the heating off to save energy when everyone is out – as well as turning it on when they’re on their way back home.
Smarten up Inside the box are the Halo unit and the Smart Interface it communicates with, which slots into the aperture on the front of the boiler with no need for wiring. The Halo Combi Wi-Fi connects to the home Wi-Fi network through the Halo app with no need for an additional gateway. Both the Halo Combi RF and Halo Combi Wi-Fi provide time and temperature control, and enhanced load compensation as standard – an easy way to comply with Boiler Plus when installing a replacement combi boiler. The Halo combi Wi-Fi also fulfils the criteria for a smart control with automation and optimisation. Lizzie Wilkinson, Head of Domestic Product Management at Ideal Heating, said: “We already know that our Logic and Vogue combi boilers are popular with consumers and installers for their ease of install, reliability, quality and value – and the Halo will truly take their experience to the next level. “After a simple ‘plug, pair and play’ install sequence, households can enjoy more flexibility and control over their home heating – delivering comfort and energy efficiency. We’ve also carried out user testing on the interface and screen, to ensure the Halo is as easy as possible for consumers to use.”

Mirror mirror The Halo has a modern and high-end design with a mirrored finish and a dial and button interface. The unit is powered by four AA batteries and can be wall or desk-mounted. The thermostat features a large, clear colour screen that displays both the actual and target temperatures, either side of a coloured temperature gauge. Any boiler faults are also reported on the screen, and the user is given clear information in plain English. Up to six heating periods can be programmed throughout the day, and users can vary the schedule from one day to the next. Additional features include child lock, holiday mode and frost protection. The Halo Combi Wi-Fi also comes with internet connectivity and app-controlled heating, enabling users to control their heating on-the-go, via a Google Home or Amazon Alexa smart home assistant, or simply by their whereabouts, via the Geolocation feature on the Halo app. For more information on the Halo range www.rdr.link/pv011

PHPI takes a look at two new van accessories recently launched by Rhino Products.
P
ossibly the most important – and often the most expensive – piece of equipment used by a plumber, a van is far more than merely a way to get to work. A home-from-home, a store for parts and tools, a marketing tool and much more besides, a van is a key tool for any professional installer. Most will look to accessorise their van to ensure it meets a specific need and commercial vehicle accessories specialist Rhino Products has just launched a couple of new solutions designed to make vehicles more useful and safer. The first complete redesign of Rhino’s popular 3m PipeTube since its launch in 2005, the PipeTube Pro is a new system for securely and safely transporting copper pipe, plastic conduit and other similar materials. 2020 | NEWS REVIEW
HELLO HYDROGEN
THE NEW NORMAL PHPI takes a glance back through the last 12 months – undeniably a year unlike any other in recent memory.
O
ne story dominated 2020 – the Covid-19 pandemic. Since mid-March we’ve all experienced lockdown in various forms, business interruption and worry. Many have also had to cope with ill health and some have been bereaved. It has been a sad and worrying time for all. The Covd-19 advice available to installers and the response of the plumbing and heating sector has featured heavily in the pages of PHPI this year. From individual
installers to major manufacturers we’ve discovered how the pandemic has affected lives and businesses – and how we are all adapting to what many now call ‘The new normal’. We will keep across this story as long as it goes on – while hoping it will quickly fade into history. Throughout the year, however, there have also been other news stories more directly related to the sector that caught our eye – here’s our brief re-cap.
GREEN GRANT
IDEAL REBRAND
The Green Homes Grant was a major announcement in the late summer. Part of the response to Covid-19 the Government announced a £2bn fund for home improvements to build up the energy efficiency credentials of domestic properties. Solar thermal & heat pumps (and to a lesser degree heating controls) were included. Gas boilers were not. Cautiously welcomed by many in the sector some saw this as an opportunity missed.
One company also turning green this year was Ideal Heating – announcing a brand name change at the end of August. Previously known as Ideal Boilers, the move included a logo change which also saw the red dot over the ‘i’ being replaced with a green one. To get the lowdown on the move we interviewed the company in our Nov/Dec issue. To read more about the rebrand www.rdr.link/pv016
A solution to help move the industry towards a greener future was unveiled at the beginning of the year as Worcester Bosch introduced us to its Hydrogen Boiler. The unit, which fits into the same footprint as a current natural gas boiler, can run on 100% hydrogen gas, although it has been designed to also run on natural gas. Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Communication and Product Management at Worcester Bosch told us: “The development of hydrogen-fired boilers will mean millions of existing heating systems in our homes can be saved, rather than the entire system needing to be replaced.” In September the company launched a report entitled ‘Fuelling our Future’ reviewing some of the decarbonisation options. To view the report www.rdr.link/pv017

TOOL THEFT Earlier in the year, we brought you the news that tool theft has now topped £80m over the last three years. The research, by insurer Direct Line, estimated that 217,000 tools had been stolen since 2017 with more than a quarter taken from vehicles. The news was yet another indication of how damaging this scourge is on those affected.

ADEY ProCheck With poor water quality a common cause of central heating breakdowns, in the summer Adey launched what it describes as, “a next generation water testing kit which provides lab-style reporting and interpretation instantly to a smartphone.” The ProCheck test kit and app uses technology that enables installers to show homeowners results immediately, indicating whether further action is required or providing reassurance that the system water has been treated and the system is healthy. ADEY believes this benefits the installer by reducing the need for a second visit as any quality issues that are identified can be dealt with there and then. Helen Isherwood, Innovations Director at ADEY said: “Using a laboratory requires the test to be posted and for the installer to wait for results before returning to take remedial action. Not only does ProCheck provide an instant result for three main areas of testing, it ensures a level of accuracy that’s previously not been possible in the field.” www.rdr.link/pv019 For further information

DRAYTON TRV 4 Anthracite In the Spring Drayton launched TRV4 Anthracite. The fourth incarnation of the company’s TRV, the original TRV4 Classic was launched in 1992. Since then, Drayton has continued to expand the range, introducing the TRV4 Chrome in 2002 and TRV4 White in 2013. The newest addition to the range is TRV4 Anthracite, designed with a matt finish to complement anthracite radiators. This new design has been launched following the rise in popularity of anthracite radiators as homeowners place more importance on aesthetics. Remi Volpe, Managing Director at Drayton, commented: “Manufactured at our factory in Plymouth, the TRV4 allows heating engineers to provide their customers with accurate, reliable and efficient heating control in a range of different styles. As more homeowners look to incorporate anthracite radiators into their homes, it was important for us to ensure there was a style to complement these, which is why we’re excited to have introduced the TRV4 Anthracite to the range.” For further information www.rdr.link/pv021

PIPESNUG FlueSnug In June the team behind PipeSnug launched a larger ‘FlueSnug’ version designed to fit all 100mm boiler flues. Removing any need for pointing, FlueSnug can be quickly installed and snuggly fits the 152mm core-drilled hole in the wall through which the boiler pipe and flue exits. FlueSnug can be used both inside and outside the property, prevents heat escaping and acts as a barrier to drafts, damp, insects and pests. “FlueSnug is already getting fantastic feedback from the trade and is suitable for any building where a boiler flue has to be installed, from new builds to local authority properties to commercial buildings,” explained Alex Lever, Director. “We know from the feedback we have had that heating engineers clearly see the time and cost saving benefits of the product - as well as the benefits of compliance with the proposed changes to Part L of the Building Regulations.” For further information www.rdr.link/pv022
VIEGA Prevista In the Spring Viega introduced Prevista which it described as a new generation of pre-wall bathroom technology. It features a newly redesigned pre-wall element engineered for easier, more flexible installation, simpler maintenance and reliability. At the heart of Prevista is a new cistern that builds on the success of the company’s previous pre-wall systems. It is compatible with all Viega Visign flush plates. Prevista has three standard types, Prevista Dry for wall installation, Prevista Dry Plus for rail mounting and Prevista Pure for wet construction. Within these are options for WCs, wash basins and urinals as well as low-height WC systems for where vertical wall space is limited. “Prevista marks a huge step forward for pre-wall systems,” said Scott James, Director at Viega. “The newly redesigned and reengineered cistern, combined with an award-winning range of flush plates allows unrivalled flexibility, choice and performance.” www.rdr.link/pv023 For further information
BOSCH GIC 120 C Inspection Camera Inspection cameras can be a handy tool to locate blockages in a drain or holes in a pipe so at the beginning of the year we took a look at the latest option from Bosch – the GIC 120 C – which boasts a large 3.5” colour display and a high screen resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. It can be powered by two separate power sources – 4 x AA batteries using the AA1 adapter, or a Bosch Professional 12V Li-Ion battery pack. The GIC 120 C is equipped with a 120cm long camera cable and comes with three attachments; a hook, magnet and mirror as well as the standard LED light. The Bosch GIC 120 C also has a new ‘Up is Up’ function so if the camera is upside down, the image will always appear the right way up on the screen. www.rdr.link/pv024 For further information
WORCESTER BOSCH Greenstar 2000 Ahead of the heating season Worcester Bosch launched the Greenstar 2000 boiler, replacing the Worcester 2000 launched a year earlier. Designed for apartments and small to medium sized homes with one bathroom, the Greenstar 2000 built on the Worcester 2000 while including more technical upgrades. The main improvements included full 230v controls compatibility as well as an easier PRV push-fit connection. There are also copper tails, for CH flow and return, to ensure a quicker installation and the mains cable is also now replaceable. The Greenstar 2000 also embraces many of the features from the previous Worcester 2000, including the ability to condense in hot water mode, easy access with removable side panels, maximum flue lengths of 9m horizontally and 12m vertically (60/100), a C6 heat exchanger – an evolution of the WB3 heat exchanger, and the ability to modulate down to as little as 4.8kW. DAMP AND CONDENSATION THE COST FOR UK HOMES
T
he Local Government Association ‘Healthy homes, healthy lives’ report attributes costs of at least £2.5 billion per year in treating people with illnesses caused by poor air quality, condensation, mould spores and compromised drinking water quality, linked to living in cold, damp and dangerous homes. This could be shocking news to some, given that the UK sits third in the global wealth table, however the reality is our society has a large wealth divide and many of our most vulnerable citizens are at risk of poor health due to their homes. Quality plumbing and heating industry services are crucial to improving the conditions of homes and standard of life. The difference a well-ventilated, plumbed and heated home can make to health and wellbeing is immeasurable. This is why the CIPHE advocates for schemes to help the water poor, and increase water efficiency in domestic properties. In fact, the CIPHE has produced various papers on water efficiency in order to promote the need to enhance public wellbeing, and is regularly outspoken on the issue with policy makers.
The Risks Cold and damp homes are a leading cause of a number of health-related issues. In fact, the NHS states that damp and mould in the home makes occupants more prone to respiratory problems, respiratory infections, allergies or asthma. Damp and mould can also affect the immune system. While this article is primarily concerned
Kevin Wellman, CEO of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE), shares the true cost of damp and condensation issues caused by water leakage in the home. with the risks associated with water leakage, it should also be mentioned that the presence of legionella bacteria in water can be life threatening. Legionella can cause a potentially fatal form of pneumonia, contracted by inhaling tiny water droplets. Another public health concern is hot water scalding which may be particularly harmful for the very young and old, as they are more at risk. This has been shown by recent statistics from the NHS Digital Hospital Episode Statistics for England (2019-2020), where children aged 0-14 made up 28% of finished consultant episodes, while those over 70 made up 36%. If you combine these figures, nearly 65% of burns from heating appliances afflicted children and the elderly. All of these water issues are equally important and with enough awareness raised, the number of deaths, accidents and those contracting poor health due to poor water can be avoided.
The Challenges While the reasons for water poverty, and in particular leakages, are vast, some of the challenges can be attributed to ageing housing, the quality of installations, and whether or not regular maintenance is undertaken by a qualified plumbing and heating engineer.
26 WINTER 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER
Ageing Housing Leaks and dampness are generally found in older properties due to the copper pipes laid in floor screed, which was common practice in the 60s and 70s. Older systems had pipes laid in concrete which can cause the copper and joints to deteriorate over time. Leaks are very difficult to trace in these situations because the water will have spread underneath into the screed across a wide area.
Installation and Maintenance There are key indicators that can point to plumbing and heating systems being the cause of condensation and damp, and qualified engineers should respond by performing a full home health check to find out. In fact, the CIPHE proposes to introduce a compliance health check to help prevent problems before they occur and ensure systems are working as efficiently and safely as possible. The health check will be similar to an MOT and will encourage consumers to have regular inspections of all their plumbing and heating systems. For more information about the CIPHE visit www.ciphe.org.uk, or for membership enquiries, please contact Tim Sainty tims@ciphe.org.uk.

The 300mm deflector is available in both 8 and 10mm glass thickness and can be retro-fitted to any existing Ultimate panel, no tools or silicone required. www.rdr.link/pv040 To discover more

STELRAD K3 Radiators FERNOX Power Cleaner F8 Ideal for retrofit scenarios and boiler swap outs, Fernox Power Cleaner F8 is said to be an effective, citric acid-based cleaner designed to remove corrosion, scale and other debris in heavily contaminated, sludged central heating systems. Suitable for use with manual, magnetic or powerflushing cleans alike, this high strength cleaner is non-foaming, which means installers require significantly less time on site to remove residual cleaner from the system. Its pH neutral formulation also means that despite its capability to take out sludge and scale from system water, no follow up neutraliser product is required. www.rdr.link/pv042 To discover more
