HUB HIGHLIGHTS It’s Olá from KAO SALON DIVISION as salon partners get down to business in Portugal. Nestled into the cliffside, overlooking the glistening Atlantic Ocean, the Tivoli Carvoeiro Algarve Resort was an idyllic and impressive setting for KAO Salon Division’s long awaited, much anticipated fourth HUB Network 2022. Making a welcome return, this hugely popular event welcomed over 150 guests all looking to add value to their business, to build their brand and achieve their business ambitions. They came to network, share ideas and challenges and learn from each other and this year’s two day programme certainly delivered with a stellar line-up of presenters bringing their relevant expertise and passion to the room. Day One got underway with a warm welcome from General Manager, KAO Salon Division UK, Ireland & South Africa, Julie Winchester and Director of Sales, Mitch Lucas. A powerful presentation from global keynote speaker Charles Marcus opened proceedings with “The Business World is Evolving: Are You?” - sharing with delegates his cutting edge business insights and reminding them that “You are not only a hairdresser. This is a noble industry and the greatest industry in the world.” Next up was industry business guru and Managing Director of London’s Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa, Hellen Ward with her advice on “Future Proofing Your Salon Business” - a straight-talking session on the challenges salons are facing and with an ever-changing business landscape how to deal with it. After lunch, industry disruptor and owner of the Not Another brand, Sophia Hilton, looked at ‘Toxicity Within the Salon’ – a colourful conversation around the change in culture and people’s behaviour and how to react and deal with this in salon. Inspirational speaker Anthony Bennett closed the first day with a moving session “Showing Resilience throughout Adversity.” There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as Anthony recounted his childhood

illness and near death experience and how he has used that to power good things in his life. The first day of the HUB network finished in true Portuguese style with traditional food and music which guests enjoyed whilst networking, relaxing and attempting to folk dance! After a lively opening from KAO’s Director of Education Irene Meikle which involved everyone doing the conga, Day Two kicked off with Chief Executive of the NHBF, Richard Lambert delivering an informative session on ‘The State of the Industry’ looking at the skills and recruitment challenges currently being faced. Some very telling data caused an emotive reaction and lively debate around the room! Next up Penny Etheridge shared her story on “How to Turn an Impossible Situation into a Success Story” with her ‘Agile Thinking’ presentation. After lunch there was a creative treat in store! Vin + Omi are conceptual artists known for their sustainable fashion and other philanthropic projects including collaborating with Prince Charles and using nettles from his Estate to make textiles for one of their shows. One half of this exciting duo, Vin commanded the stage exploring the vital importance between ‘creativity and sustainability’ in a fascinating and uniquely inspiring session. The conference was closed with an uplifting keynote speech from Holly Tucker MBE. Holly was the founder of notonthehighstreet and is the UK Ambassador to Creative Small Businesses and she inspired the room with “Do What You Love, Love What You do” where she shared creative ideas for pushing your brand forward and growing in a meaningful way. With everyone feeling motivated and inspired, it was time to enjoy the Portuguese hospitality of the KAO Salon Division hosts with a stunning roof top gala dinner and after party to close what was a fantastic and insightful couple of days.

FITfor BUSINESS Phil Smith tackles another of your tricky post-Pandemic business issues...

I was completely shocked to read that Nicky Clarke has closed his Mayfair salon. The report I read claimed the salon was no longer economically sustainable. What hope do any of us have if one of British hairdressing’s biggest-ever names has shut up shop?

PHIL SAYS:

“I must admit, I was shocked too. But sadly, not entirely surprised. It’s a tough landscape out there for us salon owners at the moment. As far as I know, this particular closure was down to a combination of the Covid pandemic, declining passing trade in Mayfair and rising rates. Nicky apparently said himself that the last two years have been the toughest he has ever experienced. There is no doubt about it, some salons will still be fighting for their lives after Covid. I’m seeing for myself we’re at tipping point and it’s scary. But there are some fundamental ways we should all be supporting each other and ensuring our survival. It is only by doing these things that we can all guarantee economic sustainability. Here are my thoughts… TOGETHER WE’RE STRONGER As far as I’m concerned, when you own a salon, you take on a duty of care to the industry as a whole. Some decisions you take not just to protect your own business, but to enhance the profession of hairdressing and safeguard its future. INVESTMENT PAYS OFF – BUT NOT STRAIGHT AWAY One thing I feel very strongly about is that we have to invest in education. It’s true that training school leavers will hit you in the pocket and in the current climate that hurts. But when you educate, you invest. You won’t see the return immediately. In fact, you won’t make a profit from them at all in the first three years and at best then you’ll just about be recouping your investment. But we can’t disregard the long-term benefits of encouraging commitment and loyalty. That’s why I’m furious when other salon owners poach team members just as their apprenticeships come to an end and cash in on your time and money. I’m seeing far too many staff being lured away by

packages dressed up with extras such as beauty treatments, a slight increase in wages but no promises on any future development. Not only is it not right, it’s unsustainable and we’re ultimately shooting ourselves in the foot if we turn a blind eye to it. TAKE MORE TO EARN MORE Teach your team that the more you turn over as a business, the more they can potentially earn. It’s simple economics but I’m not sure most employees look at it this way at all. Transparency is absolutely key. For instance, educate your team on where every pound that they take through the till is spent. In simple terms, give your team members a tangible figure to work towards. For instance, they might be able to earn 40p for every £1 they take. How do they increase their wages while boosting the health of the salon at the same time? I’ll tell you… WORK SMARTER Visiting the salon should be a luxurious experience for your clients and nobody likes to feel rushed. But if your team is carving out an hour for each cut in this climate, you could be in the danger zone. When you switch an appointment time from one hour to 45 minutes, it doesn’t take a genius to work out that you’ll take more in a day. I never cut corners with customer service but I also run my salon as a business that benefits every person in the team. Everyone needs to understand that time is money. You can make a great living working in a salon but it requires hard work and dedication. Every member of your team is responsible for its success and you have to get them to buy into that. Yes, it’s still a rocky road but there are no quick fix solutions. Losing sight of the long-term in a quest just to keep our heads above the water today will be disastrous for everyone.

business

THE lonely

BOSS LADY Meet Tina Hollis, aka The Lonely Boss Lady, our new straight talking business columnist with tons of practical advice born out of first-hand experience. Here, she lifts the lid on why being the boss can be a lonely place, and what you can do about it…

Have you ever found yourself sitting in your bustling salon but felt lonely? Or even just sat in your office or home and wondered who would understand how you’re feeling? That was me! And that’s how being a “boss” made me feel... Lonely! OK, not all the time there’s amazing things about having your own business but with great highs there’s also some hard times that we business owners face, and it’s during those hard times that I definitely felt alone, like no one understood what was going on in my head. If I’m honest, I’d never prepared myself to feel that way when I decided to open my salon 16 years ago. Yes, I’d thought about how I’d feel if I walked into the staffroom and it went quiet, I mean that’s a given isn’t it?! But to feel lonely just never even crossed my mind! So why can being the boss be lonely? For most salon owners it’s always been a dream and it’s the next step for them. But we aren’t really prepared for what it takes to own and run not just the salon but the team too! And most of us have minimal management experience let alone a real idea of: 쎲 Target setting 쎲 Client retention 쎲 Breaking even 쎲 Marketing 쎲 Pricing…..the list goes on! Unless we’ve worked in salons or franchises that have a structure within it, I’d think that most of us are winging it to start with, with many continuing to do so for years. And on top of this, lots of salon owners are usually still running their own columns too, basically we wear lots of different hats under one job title. So, what can we do to stop being lonely in this “boss” world? First of all, and most importantly, we need to learn how to be a boss in the way we want to be. We need to understand our

business down to the simplest things and be open and honest with not just ourselves but the people around us. Get everyone in your salon involved and working together towards goals, give them responsibilities - being open with my team was a major turning point, and a big relief. For me, getting a business coach was such a big thing and finding the right coach can be a real game changer. Having someone to talk things through that understood the industry, even if that was on the phone at times for me, well, it can make all the difference - having someone to discuss it with that’s not emotionally attached to the business is a leveller and something I found I greatly needed and that worked for me. Business courses and networking events are great too, meeting likeminded people to bounce ideas off and learn from, sharing stories and supporting each other is key. And salon owners should support each other because we’re all going through the same things, just some more privately than others. With recession all over the headlines, those feeling lonely will feel that more now than ever, so now is the time to act. Practical steps to take now 쎲 Get an action plan together. 쎲 Invest in your business education and even think about a

mentor. It doesn’t have to break the bank and actually the point is to increase profit, not decrease it. 쎲 Get systems in place that work and a team that’s happy – find a balance that works for you too because as the saying goes, “you can’t pour from an empty cup.” 쎲 Fill your cup with knowledge, confidence and support, watch how things can change. Not overnight but over time... I’ve learnt so much I’m now sharing that knowledge with others via The Lonely Boss Lady, and yes I still have moments but I know I’m not alone anymore!

THE morale

HIGH GROUND

Steve Rowbottom, Co-Director, Westrow and Revlon Professional’s Business Development Ambassador on how to continually motivate your staff when times are tough. Protecting your business infrastructure during and post-pandemic has been paramount for salon owners everywhere, but the financial implications were only part of the story. The next chapters have been equally as hard to navigate, with staff motivation in short supply and lack of direction one of the biggest obstacles to overcome since the doors to our businesses reopened.

Leadership: It’s important to lead effectively while remaining authentic to your brand values and methodology to fully embrace and facilitate the evolving needs of your team.

Rapidly pivoting our business models has been key; there’s not a salon business owner I’ve spoken to in recent months who hasn’t had to react and adapt to their staff’s evolving needs. Monitoring wellbeing has become a huge part of managing a team, never more so than in the last two years, but it can be hard to motivate consistently when individual wants and needs have changed, and are continuing to do so, dramatically.

Determination: To be able to motivate effectively you need an unwavering, resilient work ethic that incorporates adaptability and speed of response, allowing you to embrace change effectively and react to your staff’s changing needs with integrity.

While incentives are of course valuable motivators in business, intrinsic motivation is far more powerful and long-lasting. Understanding your team as individuals within it allows you to make meaningful connections and motivate accordingly. While this isn’t always possible if you run a larger salon group, as we do at Westrow, motivation should, in these situations, be cascaded from the top to any influential management teams and leaders you have in place to help run your business, so it can be filtered down and managed accordingly.

Here are my steps to leading by example, while motivating and inspiring as you go.

Resilience: When times are tough it’s important to keep calm and carry on to bring out the best in your team. Try to create and cultivate a compassionate environment where people can thrive, rather than just survive.

Vision: Try to always take a 360˚ approach in your business, while ensuring you provide a clear picture of future business goals, communicating effectively and inclusively, so everyone feels part of the journey. Discipline: Have the courage to rewrite your own business rules if required, as your own motivation is equally as important as your team. Ensure everyone is working to their best ability by making sure skillsets don’t overlap and everyone’s time, including your own, is managed effectively.

A culture of caring is also paramount. We’ve definitely found that post-pandemic, staff motivation is as much about how people choose to manage their thoughts as well as the circumstances surrounding them. Everyone works differently. Remain open-minded and remember that everyone has different coping mechanisms and beliefs. What you think is best for your team might not always be right, so being receptive to ideas and open to new ways of thinking can lead to productive conversations and different ways of doing things. It’s about having agility, as well as the ability to rewrite your own business rules if required.

Progressive: Always understand your own motivators, as well as those of your team; both are as important in the day-to-day running of your business. Be progressive in mindset and opportunity, so your team have clear motivators in terms of their development and role within your business.

After 35 years in business, my business partner, Marc Westerman and I know that the responsibility of motivating others is a continual evolution. The value of pace and perspective can’t be underestimated. Not everyone is driven by the same wants and needs and an approachable outlook is key.

Consistency: Responsibly achieving consistently high levels of staff motivation and drive all combine to help exceed client expectations, while maintaining your reputation. This can only be achieved via a deep commitment to the development of your team, with care and commitment every step of the way.

Alignment: Provide a powerful role model for doing the right things in the right way and offer an approachable approach to teamwork, so employees feel fully connected with a synergistic mindset.

business

STARTthe

CONVERSATION Colin McAndrew, Managing Director of Medusa salon group in Scotland addresses another sensitive issue.

In the final part of my ‘Start the Conversation’ series I want to talk about the emotive topic of money. There is such a taboo about this subject that maybe even just reading the word has made you tense up but it is crucial today we lead our team and start the conversation. Everyone is aware about the increasing cost of living. Covid and the Russian invasion of Ukraine have created significant price rises. Electricity, gas, petrol, transport and food are on the up and the impact of this as a salon owner is making business increasingly difficult. However, our duty as owners is to support our team and at Medusa we’re on a mission to change the working culture of salons. You will have read in my previous articles that we are embracing menopause in the workplace and have launched our own fertility policy to support team members should they require it. I have been in awe of the feedback from the team and clients, and the way both subjects are now openly discussed within the salon environment makes me proud. In order to keep progressing our salon culture and to support the team, I am taking it one step further and have introduced a Financial Advisor. The cost of living is, and will continue to, effect every single one of us. Salaries will have to stretch further and this will impact the mental health of the team. I want to help each of them understand how to balance their incomings/outgoings, to understand that future planning will help remove some of the financial stress everyone will endure in the coming months and years. Confidential appointments with our Financial Advisor will allow them to openly discuss their household income, and by creating a spreadsheet of their financial situation will hopefully ease some of the pressure. It is thought that 40% of households will fall into fuel poverty this winter and I want to make sure no-one in my team becomes this statistic.

By educating them on how to save and forward plan, I hope we can lighten the financial pressures that inevitably we’re all going to experience. As well as supporting them with a financial planning service, it is also my role to make sure they understand how best to increase their monthly takings. The cost of living is going to impact clients also, so we need to make sure that visiting the salon is not one of the first expenses to be dropped. I have presented to each of the six salons a course on the foundations of building your column. I’m proud that Medusa is already a Living Wage Employer and by re-visiting and fully understanding the basics of how to increase your salary, I hope to empower the team. Career and salary progression are supported for all team members at Medusa and we work together on helping our team achieve their salary goals. However, it’s important that our team understand that external (and in this case, somewhat unexpected) financial pressures are affecting us all, include the business and so learning how to manage your own finances whilst you reach your goal is vitally important. 83% of adults in the UK reported an increase in their cost of living in March 2022 and the expectation is that things won’t recover until 2024. Helping my team plan for the future and understand that putting hard work and strategies in place today, I hope to eliminate some of the financial burdens that can lead to low moral, debt and depression. I want to help them understand that when finances are stretched there are alternatives to reaching for an overdraft or pay-day loan. The next couple of years are going to be hard for us all but when we come together and support one another great things happen. I’m determined to reduce the impact that the rising cost of living will have on my team and my business. As salon owners, we have strength in numbers. It is our duty to support each other and the industry by being more vocal around the subject of money.

THE SOCIAL SET UP While you undoubtedly already have your social media accounts set up across the various platforms available, there are a few things to think about to really be getting it right. Here we take a look at the basics.

“Whether you have two salons or ten salons, the social set up you choose could determine how successful your online presence is. Think about what you want your social channels to achieve and how they serve your brand. At Haringtons we have a central marketing function and so it makes sense for us to also have central social channels that share work from across the brand, relevant industry news, group wide offers, trends and initiatives. In addition to this, our salons can also choose to have their own social channels, and this serves as a look book for services, team news and localised offers. Our central social channels play a significant role in sign posting customers to our website where we want to promote initiatives and disseminate information. It also supports our Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) ensuring that we are prominent and easy to find through Google searches, therefore increasing our brand awareness. Our salon accounts are important because this content is tailored to a specific area and community. Local salons can use their social channels to carefully market any gaps in columns, promote new starters, promote recent good reviews on Google or to specifically allow clients to ‘meet the team’ via bios or behind the scenes profiles. It’s really a two-pronged approach to a social set up that ensures our brand is supported while also delivering relevant content to clients.” Nikki Neale, Head of Brand and Marketing, Haringtons

“Social media is a difficult world to navigate. In order to make your platforms a success, you need to be authentic. Whilst that may sound easy and overly simplistic, it really is the way to succeed. My content is made up mostly of sneak peeks of my work and my world. Whether that’s from behind the scenes at the BAFTA’s or on set at a magazine shoot, I try to bring my followers into what I am doing to create that relationship with them.” Jay Birmingham, Celebrity Hairstylist

“The way I view my social media presence is almost like a virtual portfolio. Instagram is my go-to and often I get new guests with hair inspiration photos from my own Instagram and also my existing clients love seeing all my videos and creations. Also, just like when we look for reviews, clients often look for a visual confirmation, being visible has for sure helped navigate through the pandemic.” Aline Knee, Simi Hair Lab

Simon Townley’s top tips for using Facebook: 1. Whatever type of hairdresser you want to be, show this on social media. If you love vivid colouring, men’s hair or precision cutting, the work you put out will be the work you get back from your social media audience. 2. Tag your clients, followers around the world and brands who you love on all your posts and hope they share it. 3. Don’t get deflated if you don’t get likes or comments, just go for it. 4. Be part of a community, you don’t have to do it alone!

SOCIAL SPEAK

The terminology you need to know.

ANALYTICS The process of following metrics on your social media performance and using that data to improve your strategy. Watching your engagement rate over time to see if your posts are becoming more or less compelling to your followers is one way of using social analytics.

ALGORITHM In general, an algorithm is a defined set of rules used to solve a problem. In social media terminology, it is the set of rules a social network uses to automatically decide which posts come first in your feed.

AUDIENCE

BRAND AWARENESS Brand awareness is the level of familiarity consumers have with your brand. It’s often considered one of the main goals of social media marketing.

Your audience on social media is the group of people you’re able to reach with your content. This includes all your followers, plus anyone who sees or interacts with your posts in their feed.

ENGAGEMENT RATE IMPRESSIONS Impressions are a social media metric that measures how many times your post has been shown in users’ feeds. Unlike with reach, you may count multiple impressions for a single user if they have looked at your post more than once. Each social network counts impressions differently.

Engagement rate is a social media metric that tells you how much a post is motivating people to interact with it. Typically, a higher engagement rate means your post was more compelling (or at least more likely to provoke a response). Engagement rate is difficult to compare across social networks, as what counts as an “engagement” and what counts as “seeing your post” is different on each network.

NEWSJACKING

REACH Reach is a social media metric that tells you how many people have seen your post. It differs from impressions in that even if a user sees your post multiple times, they still only count as one person reached. Reach is an important metric for understanding how large the audience for your content is and measuring your progress toward spreading brand awareness.

Newsjacking is the technique of hopping on current events with your social media content. Social media managers often engage in newsjacking to seem timely and relevant while gaining exposure by tying their content to key hashtags and conversations around the latest news.

TRAFFIC Traffic is the number of users who visit a given website or page. In a social media context, increasing traffic is a common objective companies who want to drive their audience to a website outside of the social network.

CREATE TO YOUR HEART’S CONTENT

Now what’s in your camera roll? Here our experts talk content.

“Keeping up with social media is hard for busy salons. Coupled with the ever-changing Instagram algorithm your team may find it challenging to stay consistent and navigate effective content. We recommend appointing a social media ambassador within the salon to help keep social feeds on track. Our social media ambassadors have access to Harington’s marketing team through a dedicated WhatsApp support group. Here we share ideas and resolve any issues they may be having. We advise our salons not to be slaves to followers and to create content that is representative of the salon and the brand. Joining in on trends and popular reel tracks is great, but the content must be brand affiliated, as well as interesting and exciting for the target audience. We find ‘behind the scenes’ content works well to give clients an insight into the salon culture and team, hair transformations on real clients gain great engagement and of course funny content is also always a winner if executed well.” Nikki Neale, Head of Brand and Marketing, Haringtons

Ensure your grid is looking strong and part of a story. I like to post 3 of each tones each time for example 3 blondes, 3 reds, 3 brunettes so there’s a theme and it’s blending well on the grid. Don’t go putting a random vivid on its own, especially if your grid is mainly neutral shades. When posting your ‘before & after’ swap it around on your grid. Post your ‘after’ first and then say ‘swipe for before’ otherwise your grid is showing hair that doesn’t look that appealing! Then when you’re editing for Reels, again always start with your the ‘after’ first and say something like “want to see how I created this” this way you’re teasing them to want to watch more. Don’t start your Reel with the mixing bowls as it just doesn’t mean that much to your followers. Be consistent with posts and know what your audience likes. I like to post lots of blondes as I know my followers love looking at them and I get far more interaction and likes when they’re posted. Jake Nugent, OSMO Ambassador

#PROCESSPORN “We’ve all watched videos and seen images that show the process of achieving that must-have colour. Shooting process images is an important part of showcasing your work on social media as you can show your technique better which is especially important if your audience is mainly hairdressers. Not only does it help with engagement, but everyone loves a satisfying video of a process colour. It also helps to show that your clients always look fabulous at the salon even with the colour on. You can easily use this to show your creativity on a different level to inspire both clients and hairdressers. Check out #processporn on Instagram to see how it works for salons around the world.” Pedro Plastic, Pulp Riot Educator

PEDRO’S TOP TIPS: SO WHAT MAKES A GREAT PROCESS IMAGE?

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Lighting is very important as you should only post images not only with as much light as possible, but also the right lighting for the colours. You don’t want your colour to look dull.

A focused image and a tidy background are a must. Use your station in the background as it looks more organic and spontaneous.

Make sure that your colour is neat and the skin and gown of your client is perfectly cleaned from the colour cream. No one wants to see a messy colour application!

Every time you do a rainbow colour take a picture of the process to make your social media page more diverse in content. You can also create a reel where you show the before, the process, the rinsing of the colours and finally the final result. It’s great for your audience to see the entire colour journey.

Focus on the sides that you like most and where you can see most of the colours. The clear rinse videos with the Pulp Riot Semi Permanents are absolutely insane and it gives you a lot of engagement as you’re washing all the colours together without any bleeding.

THE TERRIFYING WORLD OF TIKTOK

Heffy Wheeler is making it work, and so can you…

Pulp Riot Artist Heffy Wheeler has built a following of more than 112,000 followers and gained more than two million likes on TikTok (@heffy.w) making her one of the most successful British hairdressers on the platform. While it’s popular with American stylists, it’s still a relatively new platform for UK stylists. “Social media is an intrinsic part of my business, and while I was concentrating on building my profile on Instagram, I hadn’t really paid any attention to TikTok. But I was approached by someone at the app who were looking for professionals to be part of it and they asked me to create content for them. It was still in its infancy and was more of a silly, childish lip-syncing site. They were looking for creatives to start using it while they transitioned to a more serious, professional app with content that was interesting and inspirational. So I started posting some videos of my work and the benefits to my business and career were instant, I gained a lot of attention very quickly. Now I have a big following on TikTok and post regularly on the platform. TikTok is very different to Instagram and as an industry we really need to embrace what it can offer us. We have all really embraced what Instagram can do for us but it has its limitations. The biggest difference is you can post videos up to ten minutes. On Instagram it can be hard to get a good reach on a post, but on TikTok your content is seen by people who don’t follow you so your work is visible to the wider world. I’ve had videos that have been seen by two million people on TikTok, but just a few hundred on Instagram. With live videos you may

HEFFY’S TOP TIPS:

1

FOR MAKING TIKTOK WORK FOR YOU

ALWAYS BE YOUR AUTHENTIC SELF.

TRY AND HAVE A BEGINNING, MIDDLE AND AN END TO YOUR VIDEO, TAKE THE VIEWER ON A JOURNEY.

USE TRENDING MUSIC AND HASHTAGS FOR MAXIMUM EXPOSURE.

3 4

5

TRY DIFFERENT CONTENT UNTIL YOU FIND OUT WHAT WORKS FOR YOU.

PLAY AROUND WITH THE LIVE FEATURE, DON’T BE SCARED OF IT.

DON’T WORRY IF YOUR VIDEO DOESN’T GET VIEWS STRAIGHT AWAY, IT COULD TAKE A FEW WEEKS FOR IT TO GET SERIOUS LIKES.

7

2

HAVE FUN WITH IT AND DON’T TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY

6

get a few hundred on Instagram, whereas on TikTok I’ve had lives watched by over 38,000 people which is insane! There’s certainly a lot more opportunity to grow your business and profile on TikTok and for more potential clients to see you. I understand it can be scary for hairdressers to join a new platform and get used to a new algorithm and audience and it can be overwhelming to start with. However, TikTok is worth pursuing as the results can be amazing. On Instagram you can show a beautiful image, but with a video you can showcase your skills and your workmanship, what’s involved in a transformation and what can go wrong with a cut or a colour. When you post a video you’re showing your skills and personality as well as what goes into creating a beautiful look; an image that is filtered and photo shopped can’t do that. TikTok is more rough and real. On TikTok I talk about the challenges of changing a hair colour as well as the great results, so viewers can see what goes into the total look. I talk about the colour placement and why I am doing something. I can show how I am applying a product and the results you get. The response I get from hairdressers, consumers and brands has been phenomenal; a lot of people who don’t follow me have seen my work and are interested in working with me. So give it a go, as the app is looking for professional creatives like you.”

Luxury brand Racoon ran a competition to find the real faces of ‘Desire’ with the six lucky women winning a makeover with the Racoon Artistic & Education Team. Each woman dreamed of longer, fuller or thicker hair and each had their own hair story to share.

“We knew that the makeovers would have a huge impact on the lives of our winners. We were able to give them the hair that they had always desired and transform not only their hair but also their confidence. We reached out via social media amongst our followers and then selected the women we thought we could make a big hair difference for as well as showcasing the beauty and range of Racoon hair extensions and services. Black Magic HAIR COLOUR HAS ENTERED A NEW DIMENSION In collaboration with T H E U N S E E N, Schwarzkopf Professional presents an innovative, prismatic, holographic hair colour reactive to temperature: COLOUR ALCHEMY.

Always striving to be at the very forefront of innovation and trend-led product development, Schwarzkopf Professional has collaborated with T H E U N S E E N to transform the hair category. COLOUR ALCHEMY reveals stunning prismatic colours that work on hair and that don’t require pre-lightening or bleaching treatment. Even on the darkest hair base the temporary colour takes effect instantly. You can now create unique colour in tonal spectrums with no damage to the hair or scalp. These new dimensional colours change when triggered by new temperatures from sunlight, heat sources, body temperature, wind and even breath.

The COLOUR ALCHEMY collection is inspired by the bright iridescent colours found in nature, developed with a view to transform colour services. The specialist crystal formula replicates the visual effect of ‘structural colour’ a natural colour phenomenon found only in nature such as a Peacock feather or the shell of a Scarab beetle. Unlike static pigmented colour, each shade scatters the light in a range of kaleidoscopic hues, which transform and shift in response to temperature.

VISIT

E H M O I B ANS E H T It’s boho vibes all the way down in Deptford at the super-chilled The Bohemians salon. Let’s step into this oasis of calm with owner Saivo Ierna…

How did you decide on the style of your salon interior? I knew that I wanted the salon to represent a relaxing oasis in the city. A laid-back environment where clients could come and relax, that combined nature with expression and reflected our philosophy of being a place where ordinary meets extraordinary. I also knew I wanted to create a space where hair and different forms of art expressions could combine - a no geographic art expression space where different artists could express their craft. Where did you find the inspiration for your design? Our salon interior is inspired by a combination of industrial and rustic nature and uses raw materials such as exposed brick, plain, untouched ‘weathered’-look wood, glass and plenty of plants and greenery to create a laid-back environment that combines nature with expression. It’s also inspired by our local community and the abundance of talent within it. All of this is accentuated with amazing pieces of highly expressive art designed to ignite inspiration for a truly Bohemian feel. Did you use an interior designer? No! The entire project and refurbishment was a complete challenge for me as it was the first salon I’d ever owned. However challenging, I really wanted to design the salon myself as I wanted to have that lived experience and to turn my visions into reality. The salon aesthetic was a manifestation of those visions. Having no interior designer background, I had to project an image of the salon in my mind and work hard to make those images come to life.

salon profile

Describe the vibe created by your interior The Bohemians is an authentic and honest space that not only feels inviting and relaxing, but that is also edgy, interesting and reflective of the talent that is abundant in our local community. What do you hope is your clients’ first impression when they walk in? I wanted to create a relaxing and peaceful ambience for clients where as soon as they come through the doors they feel like they are in another world, but at the same time feel like they are home. Although the majority of our client base is quite young (twenties and thirties), we strongly believe in fostering inclusivity so it’s important that any client, regardless of age, feels welcome and comfortable when they enter The Bohemians. This ethos runs right the way through our salon offering, with a boundary-less offering of gender-neutral pricing and silent appointments that contribute towards fulfilling the needs of our clients as individuals.

Tell us what are the key elements of your salon design? Our lighting contributes to the salon’s natural relaxing ambience. We used spotlight cold light with a mix of warm light, and as much natural daylight as possible to achieve this. We chose wooden floors for the majority of the salon. Not only are they super-stylish and in keeping with the rustic theme of the salon, but also durable and hard-wearing enough to weather the demands of a busy salon environment. The walls are a combination of exposed brickwork and beautiful art created by local artists and designed to ignite inspiration for a truly Bohemian feel. The reception and waiting area are a mix of wood, metal and green and this is exactly the reflection of today’s world. We live amongst building and concrete, but always look to the great outdoors as places where we can relax and open our spirit to the environment and take in the good vibes from the flora and fauna. The mix of metal, green and wood is a message of hope too where the nature will always find its way through the concrete and the city.

Do you have any curated pieces or special features/areas in the salon? There are so many, but some of the most special (and my personal favourites) have to be the incredible pieces of art by local creatives that can be found throughout the salon. Our washroom, for example, features the amazing mural by local artist David Enos Hotton that depicts a battle between nature and concrete. For me, the art is reflective of our modern approach in the industry and really sums up our philosophy of inclusivity and expression. Not only has it transformed our space, but it offers us the opportunity to showcase local talent and to work collaboratively within our community. In addition, the stylist stations in the centre of the salon were made by me so are also a favourite feature of mine!

How have you embraced sustainability within the design? Sustainability is integral to our ethos at The Bohemians. As well as using sustainable and vegan dyes and haircare, the salon currently recycles 80% of its waste and is pledging to increase that to 100% by the end of 2022. Our commitment to sustainability and the environment is reflected in our design in a couple of key ways. We try to up-cycle furniture, where possible to turn unloved items into new and unique pieces. For example, the desk in our main cutting area was crafted using repurposed wooden desks and mirrors. Our clients love it, and so do we! In addition, we reduce the number of lights used in the salon by maximising the use of natural light as much as possible! It was very important that we could have a full-frontal open floor to ceiling glass windows so we could rely on natural light more. What salon software do you use and what feature of it do you find most useful? We use Salon Iris – an amazing software solution that is designed especially for hair and beauty businesses. It’s really easy-to-use and includes an extremely useful marketing campaign function that can be set up directly from the system and allows us to create engaging email marketing campaigns. This enables us to communicate with existing customers whilst growing our database.

What salon furniture have you chosen and why? Our salon furniture was sourced from second-hand shops, especially the second-hand market of Deptford. The stylist stations were created and assembled by me. The stylist chairs are handmade and were bought from an Italian company and imported to us here in London. The furniture not only fits well with the overall aesthetic of the salon, but also represents different elements of its heritage, and represent the juxtaposition of our environment where nature meets contemporary.

Do you have dress code/uniform for your team? No. As a salon that celebrates individuality, we do not specify a dress code for our team members. We want our stylists and assistants to be able to express themselves and show others their unique style and personality.

hairdressers at home Michael Douglas has explored and mastered every avenue that a hairdressing career can offer. Whether he’s found behind the chair, in front of the camera presenting, styling his many celebrity clients or creating his own product line, here’s what he is watching, reading and doing.

best book 12 Rules For Life Jordan B Peterson A fantastic insight into human behaviour. It’s been very helpful to me. It’s made me be a better person.

Easy Riders, Raging Bulls How a few brilliant mad creative people changed the world of Cinema and in turn possibly changed the world. Fascinating read into an industry unparalleled in its creativity.

best films Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind A film about love and how despite the pain of potentially losing it, it’s better to keep hold of the experience than to pretend it never happened. The pain has value. It’s a real work of art. Funny, sentimental and very emotional. Jim Carrey’s best film by far in my opinion.

City of God True story of a guy at the bottom of the pile making something really meaningful of his life. Violent, terrifying and very exciting. A window into a world very far removed from our own here in the UK.

Mission Impossible Tom Cruise at his very best. Escapism and pure entertainment… for me anyway.

best podcast Making the Cut Mine obvs! I don’t listen to it other than when we (me and Davina McCall) record it but I LOVE making it. It’s a total treat to do, very cathartic. Bit like therapy.

best box set Band of Brothers A very accurate representation of WWII.

Breaking Bad Needs no explanation

Peep Show A must, if you want to try to understand how men think and behave. An extremely funny show, has not dated at all. A perfect sit com.

best exhibition Life/What a Wonderful World? – St Albans Abbey A spectacular exhibition of light and sound projected onto the interior of the Abbey. It was during lock down and it was the only event we (me and my boys) went to during that whole period. It blew our brains out. I’m sure you can experience similar things in various churches, cathedrals and abbeys around the country.
