Brush up the Branding

FOLLOW ME: @nicolaprohair FOLLOW PRO HAIR MAG: @ProHairMag @ProHairMag

Editor Nicola Shannon nshannon@hamerville.co.uk

There is a fair bit of bandying about of the word ‘branding’ in this issue. Developing relationships with your clients is so important, one could liken it to dating! It takes time, effort, honesty and consideration to build into ‘long term’ relationship. There’s a lot about attraction when it comes to your brand and launching relationships with clients. How closely are you aligned to them? Does your style complement theirs? Your marketing and social media plays an integral role in conveying this message to would-be clients and will help you find your core client demographic, or actually help them find you. Remember you can never undo a first impression. If someone walks through your salon door for the first time and doesn’t feel comfortable in your surroundings then they probably won’t engage with you on any level long term. You need to nail your brand to connect with clients. Your brand needs to attract them through the salon door and turn them into long-lasting dream clients. On a larger scale but still on the branding message, ghd has just announced its first ever International Brand Ambassador – Italian fashion icon and entrepreneur, Chiara Ferragni. A devoted fan and user of ghd, Ferragni has partnered with the brand on successful social media campaigns for two years. In her new and elevated position, Ferragni will be the face, and hair, of ghd, with a focus on the new launch to be revealed in this issue and on this front cover. Again it is about the power of attraction and for ghd Chiara is the ultimate global fashion trendsetter who speaks directly to the social media generation and their digital savvy consumers.

KEVIN.MURPHY goes green

Get your aprons on

KEVIN.MURPHY reveals partnership with the Green Salon Collective. Sustainability is at the heart of everything that KEVIN.MURPHY does, and the brand has taken its commitment one step further by announcing a partnership with Green Salon Collective in the UK. Through this partnership KEVIN.MURPHY aims to educate salons further on how they can become more sustainable with commitment and minimal effort to create a lasting change. In March 2020, Good Housekeeping reported that ‘by putting one non-recyclable item in your recycling bin, you can disrupt the entire recycling process.’ Green Salon Collective offer a solution to this by recycling the unrecyclable. This unique waste solution is on a mission to achieving hairdressing sustainability by helping salons recycle things such as hair, foil, colour, bleach and much more. Their goal is to collect as close to 100% of all salon waste as physically possible and find new uses for it that reward the salon, the environment and the community. From turning cut hair into hair booms and hair mats, to recycling all metals including used foils, colour tubes, hairspray cans and drinks cans, Green Salon Collective are the perfect fit for KEVIN.MURPHY. “We’re really excited to partner with Green Salon Collective in the UK and be able offer KEVIN.MURPHY salons the opportunity to become more sustainable,” says KEVIN.MURPHY Brand Manager, Emma Jones. “Their core beliefs are completely in line with ours at KEVIN.MURPHY and we believe that it’s changes like this that will have a huge positive impact on our environment.”

Rapture Reunion

RAPTURE HOLD INAUGURAL PRO CLUB EVENT

Revolutionary hair extensions system, Rapture, invited nine of its brand new educators to the beautiful Coombe Abbey Hotel in Warwickshire recently to come together at the brand’s first ever Pro Club conference. The Rapture Pro Team came from all corners of the UK to hear more about upcoming launches, share knowledge and more importantly have some fun fresh out of lockdown. Brand manager Emily Bowden lead the day, talking the team through potential new shades for feedback alongside some of the brand’s upcoming initiatives to help reduce waste and become more sustainable, as well as discussing upcoming training courses to standardise education across Rapture. “Our education team has grown from two people to nine in the past year so it was great to get everyone together in one place to discuss the exciting new developments we have in store for Rapture,” said Emily. “It’s so important for us to have the feedback from our educators to ensure the brand stays true to its ‘by professionals, for professionals’ roots.” While the Rapture team were discussing their plans, Stuart Young from Illustration Station was busy in the background illustrating everyone’s comments into a huge storyboard to help communicate the team’s ideas and provide a handy reminder of the day. Stuart also talked the team through the art of visualisation and how this can help with business planning. Nick Allen, Sales Director of Rapture parent company, Banbury Postiche, said: “It was great to get our amazing new educators together today in one room to celebrate being back from lockdown and spend time together as a team. It’s so important for us as a brand to listen to our customers, who work with Rapture every day, and find out what they’d like to see from the brand too. The inaugural Pro Club event was a huge success, and we’re looking to expand this to include even more educators next year!”

Going full circle Aveda introduces takeback programme and new refillable pouches. Aveda has announced a new milestone in the brand’s sustainability journey: the launch of an empty bottle take-back initiative in the UK, the Aveda Full Circle Takeback Programme. As the first beauty brand to use 100% post-consumer recycled materials in its packaging, the launch of Aveda Full Circle is a natural next step for Aveda in its ongoing quest to address its impacts related to packaging, including minimising packaging materials and maximising recycling and the use of recycled content. While many Aveda products are recyclable at home, a handful - pumps, small bottles (150ml or less), samples, pouches, makeup items and tubes - are not, due to the composition, size or shape of the material. Aveda encourages guests to reuse these items wherever possible, and when finished, this is where Aveda Full Circle comes in: consumers are encouraged to drop off these empties that are not easily curbside recycled to any of the 35 participating Aveda salons across the UK. In exchange, guests will receive 200 Aveda Plus Rewards points per eligible product returned. Aveda will then collect the empties and pass them along to its recycling partner, who will recycle what they can, with any remaining materials being converted waste to energy. Aveda Global Brand President Barbara De

Laere said, “We are very excited to pilot this programme in the UK, where consumers have shown an eagerness to make more sustainable decisions around consumption and recycling. Our goal is to roll it out in several additional countries in the future, and we are excited about the potential long and short-term impact of the programme.”

Karoliina Saunders, Project Leader, said: “We all take part in competitions and industry shows, so it’s amazing to have this information. The team should be thinking forward especially when we have our team presentation this year, as well being ready to share information with our clients”. Clients are asking all the time about trends, so it is great to have this information to share. It shows we are knowledgeable and experts in our field.” Member Darcey Clarke added: “I don’t get the chance to do a lot of fashion looks in the salon, so it was great to have a session like this.”

Trade TALK

Learning the skills of hairdressing needs a willing apprentice and a motivational master.

Amy Wilkinson (20) is a Junior Stylist at HNB Salon Spa, located in Sandbanks, Dorset, and Assistant to Lead Hairstylist and founder of HNB Salon, Steph Stevenson. Amy finished her apprenticeship a year ago and shares her story as an apprentice with us.. What made you want to take an apprenticeship in hairdressing? I did work experience in the industry in Year 10 and just fell in love with the atmosphere of the salon and helping the senior stylists. I would watch them and think that one day I would be a hairdresser like them. I love doing hair and making people look and feel 100%. How did you get an apprenticeship with HNB Salon? I did work experience through school, then they offered me a Saturday job, then a summer job, and finally asked if I’d like to do an apprenticeship with them. What was the best thing about your apprenticeship? It’s great to have done an apprenticeship in HNB, the top salon in Dorset with such talented senior stylists. I’ve been able to learn from the best, and I’ve had lots of amazing opportunities like doing big weddings with Steph and some of the HNB team. What has been the hardest thing about your apprenticeship? The final cuts were difficult as it was during the first lockdown, so I couldn’t train in the salon, and felt anxious preparing for the final assessment. Getting models for the final cuts was hard too, as they weren’t cuts that are currently in fashion.

What does a normal day in the HNB salon look like for you? Firstly, I’m Steph’s Assistant, so I get all her kit and trolly ready for the day. Then I help Steph by shampooing her clients and doing toners with her and help passing up (which means giving the stylist the foils for highlights and holding the colour bowls). I also do rough drying before Steph comes back to finish the colouring or balayage. When Steph is busy, I help with blow dries and prepare the finishing tools like tongs or straighteners. I try to stay one step ahead of her, giving her the finishing products, mirror, hairspray and shine spray when she needs them. I tell Steph when clients are ready, and their name and what they want. I also help other stylists with jobs like shampooing, root colours, cutting foils, toners, rough dries, blow dries and finishing styling, like curling or smoothing the client’s hair for a lovely finish. I also do the end of day cleaning jobs and make sure the salon’s ready for the next day. How has Steph and the team supported you throughout your apprenticeship? Steph has let me work as her assistant and that means I’ve been learning from one of the top stylists, and the owner of the salon. Georgia, my manager, has always helped me develop my confidence with blow dries, colours and cuts. All the other stylists have helped me by showing me cuts, colours and finishing styles and looks. They’ve all been so supportive. Where do you see your career going? I hope to become a senior hair stylist at HNB, to continue to grow and learn, and bring new juniors and apprentices to the salon and help them build their careers too.

PEOPLE

Steph: For me, it’s about giving Amy mentoring on life! One day she may fly the nest from the HNB Salon and I hope she takes with her all of the skills she’s learnt. Once you’re a hairdresser, the world is your oyster.

We talk to founder of HNB Salon Steph Stevenson along with junior stylist Amy. Talk to us about your experience of working together? Amy: It has been an adventure, I started four years ago, and have been Steph’s assistant for two years. Steph: When you start out in the industry as an apprentice, you grow into the role of an assistant. To be my assistant, you’ve got to first and foremost have the skill set, but secondly, the right attitude. Amy has the grit to succeed. She’s the best and that’s why she’s my assistant. Amy: I’ve worked really hard to get to this position, I’m diligent and I’m never off sick. Steph: Amy wants to go on shoots, and they’re always 15/16 hour days. She’s definitely up for the challenge and everything she’s learnt so far in the salon will prepare her for those. What relationship have you built? Steph: We’ve built a relationship based on mutual trust and respect. I respect her boundaries and she respects mine as her employer and also as her mentor. As a mentor, what has Steph taught you? Amy: Steph doesn’t just teach me about hair. It’s so much more, we’ve covered everything from etiquette, customer service, communication skills to insider tips on the hair industry as a whole.

What’s the difference between apprenticeships in the salon today, compared to when you started out as an apprentice Steph? Steph: It’s the biggest difference. Today, you’re treated very differently – in a positive way. Apprentices are valued and respected. We understand the importance of apprentices. They keep the cogs of a salon turning. Each member of the team helps train the apprentice too, so they become well rounded. I didn’t get that when I first started in the industry. What would you say are the main benefits of being an apprentice? Amy: The benefits of being an apprentice is that you learn on the job, while earning a wage and for me personally, I got to work with some of the best hair stylists in the business, in a beautiful salon with the highest standards. Steph: It’s so important that apprentices get that in salon training. Having contact with other human beings everyday and learning how to communicate is a huge part of the job. Once the confidence is there, the creative juices start flowing.

TOP 10 TIPS 5 STEPS ON HOW TO CUT IT AS AN APPRENTICE, BY JUNIOR STYLIST AMY WILKINSON: Determination – if you know you want to become a hairdresser, put everything into your dream. Listen and learn – to succeed as an apprentice you have to have your eyes and ears open to learn from all of the amazing skills around you. Give everything you do 150% – not 100%, more! To be the best, you have to be the best! Practice makes perfect – it takes time, but eventually you will get there! Persistence – of course some days will be hard, but stay persistent in your endeavours.

5 STEPS ON HOW TO CUT IT AS AN APPRENTICE, BY FOUNDER OF HNB SALON STEPH STEVENSON: Enjoy the ride – You will meet some amazing people, you’ll be able to travel the world for work and always earn a living. Understand the financial journey – Think long term – managers today stand to make £35k a year. Be flexible – The role offers flexible working hours – so you can use it to suit other priorities in your life. Make a name for yourself – and the opportunities to do photoshoots will come. Job satisfaction – hairdressing is voted one of the happiest industries to work in thanks to its creativity and social aspects.

PEOPLE

HAIR WITH... WE GET TO KNOW BUSINESS OWNER, EDUCATOR COLOUR QUEEN AND ALL ROUND HAIR HEROINE HARRIET STOKES. If you’ve not heard of Harriet Stokes you must have been living under a rock. She’s an award-winning freelance hairdresser, educator and the co-founder of Humankind Hair, and she’s definitely been one to watch over the last few years. She’s worked in hair for 12 years and spent the last five specialising in colour in London and she’s recently gone freelance, so we got in contact to find out what she’s all about.

COLOUR So Harriet, we’ve never met, but we’ve watched you grow into an amazing, award-winning colourist, what drew you to colour in the first place? When I first moved to London I actually gave up colour up as I never felt like I was good enough or knew enough about it until I started working at Not Another Salon and I very quickly fell in love with everything colour had to offer. How it can completely change someone, how it makes people feel, how technical it is, and what you can create. Now of course I absolutely love it. We saw you win the Star Award at L’Oréal Colour Trophy a few years ago, and of course we’ve seen your stunning Instagram grid, how would you describe your style as a colourist? I would describe my colouring style as versatile. I love everything from soft and delicate to strong and striking but done in a way that is very desirable. I do very much still have a vivid clientele but a large percentage of my clients are lived-in blondes or sun-kissed balayages who occasionally spice things up with soft pastel tones like pink, peach or violet.

FREELANCE

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

What’s a skill you’re working on mastering? Cooking!

What made you decide to go freelance? After being employed for 11 years I was ready for a change, I was actually meant to be moving to Australia last summer but obviously that plan couldn’t go ahead so I decided during the first lockdown that it was time to go out on my own. Becoming my own boss is the best thing I’ve ever done, I didn’t realise how freeing it would be to be in charge of my own career but also a little scary too of course. When you have worked in a company with such a strong brand identity for so long and you leave, you end up questioning your own style, what you like and who you are as a hairdresser. That’s what I found when I left Not Another but I had time in all the lockdowns to explore different things I liked, didn’t like and what got my creative ideas flowing. Since going freelance BaByliss PRO have been incredibly supportive and have kept me busy with continuous work throughout lockdown making creative videos, doing Instagram takeovers and also doing styling tutorials for them. I love working with brands who I truly believe in and have such a good relationship with, we actually have something really exciting to announce in the pipeline but you’ll need to wait for that news.

014_PHR_AUG21_Layout 1 23/06/2021 09:39 Page 15

EDUCATION You’ve got so much going on! You’re an educator too right? Yes and I LOVE being an educator. It’s something that I naturally fell into over time when assisting my previous boss, Sophia Hilton, and before I knew it I was teaching alongside her all around the world and then leading my own classes. I’m so happy that I did fall into education, there’s something so rewarding about sharing what you know and are passionate about with others. Over the last year I’ve kept myself really busy with education. As a new freelancer I fell through the gaps of government support, so my business partner, Anneliese Hesse and I started Humankind Hair and due to the ever-changing restrictions we took our education online. Not only that but I was developing education and teaching for Pulp Riot and L’Oréal Professionnel which was pushing my creativity when thinking of new things to teach and when working on exciting projects with them. BaByliss PRO and BaByliss also kept me nice and busy with creative projects creating content for social media.

What is the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done in your life? Jumped on a flight to Australia for three weeks on my own with no real plans…. Best trip ever.

GROWTH TOOLS... Favourite BaByliss PRO tool you couldn’t live without in your kit bag? TITANIUM EXPRESSION 25MM CURLING TONG & PRIMA 3100 SLIM

What is your favourite look you’ve ever done? This last minute collaboration shoot I did with two of my talented friends for my colour trophy 2019 entry.

Name one thing you’ve learned the hard way It’s not selfish to put yourself first.

What would be your advice to your younger self? Focus on the things that make you happy.

With all of this exciting growth, what’s next for Harriet Stokes? I always find questions like this really hard as I never really plan that far ahead, I’ve always been one to go with the flow but now I have my own businesses I do need to think about the future. I guess my goal is always to continuously grow and educate myself so I can always be the best version of myself, as a hairdresser and as a human in general. We do have big plans for Humankind Hair, we will keep building on what we offer education wise and how we offer it. We also both love travelling and one of the big reasons why we started HKH was so we can travel and teach while seeing the world at the same time… once we are allowed. Keep up with Harriet’s journey at @harriet_stokes and find out more about her education platform at @humankindhair. You can also find her and other friends of BaByliss PRO at @babylissprouk.

COLOUR CLOSE-UP

CUSTOM

CREATIONS

Chroma ID custom-mixed bonding colour masks extends its shade range. Even the best cared for colour can fade in-between salon appointments – hair washing and heat styling can both lead to faded and flat, muted tones. But what if you could help your clients keep that colour vibrant, glossy and healthy at all times? With Chroma ID at-home bonding masks, your client’s colour can be refreshed in salon and then effortlessly maintained at home. Chroma ID is Schwarzkopf Professional’s first semi-permanent mix and tone colour system with Integrated Bonding Technology, developed to create tones from subtle to bold – with 100% colour flexibility and no damage. Originally launching with only six shades available for clients to take home, Chroma ID has extended the at home colour possibilities with 30 new shade recipes. With Chroma ID, colour can be as unique as your client, it’s all about that personal touch, from when you’re with them in the salon right through to at home maintenance.

HOW IT WORKS

The process couldn’t be simpler, the hairdresser will mix the bespoke at-home bonding mask in salon for each individual client to take home and use. The client will then apply the bonding mask on pre-washed and towel dried hair, leaving on for 3-15 minutes depending on the stylist recommendation and the colour refresh should last between 5-12 washes. Now there’s no excuses for not maintaining that salon-fresh colour!

ummer. Undoubtedly my favourite season of the year. The heat brings with it high energy and feel-good factor. People are optimistic and warmer to each other. As hairdressers we are naturally more social than most but I think this attribute is enhanced with us all wanting to break out and be free from the stagnant winter and post-lockdown blues. Summer vibin’ and happy interactions with my clients are a great source of inspiration for my creativity and I’ve just papped my ’21 BHA collection, which I am hoping will finalise later this year. Speaking of which, let’s talk about the final image from my reigning collection.

Let’s talk technique Pre-lightening true afro-textured hair is a skill in itself because the composition of the hair texture is slightly different and although the texture when manipulated, feels stronger; it is in fact a lot more delicate. I generally will use the weakest peroxide, a 4% or 6% depending on the hair’s strength, density and chemical history and I have never had to leave the pre-lightener on this texture for longer than 30 minutes. The global toner was applied pre-cut but the Ultraviolet colour placement was only placed on the hair once the cut was completed. I generally find that with super curly hair of any ethnicity, if you want a placement to look more bold, application (which is not dissimilar to certain haircuts on said hair type) is usually done visually to the natural hair fall. This is mainly due to the fact that the curl is unpredictable and uncontrollable so placing it in a strict section could give varied results. I used an ‘airbrush’ type application technique to create this particular blend so I diluted direct dyes into a water spray and then sprayed the solution on the areas that I wanted to stain. This can be done with most direct dyes as no peroxide is required so dilution does not affect the efficacy of the product.

The Look This image was taken from my 2016 Collection 4AM. As previously mentioned, the inspiration for this collection was taken from characters and personas you may happen upon on an adventure through the eclectic nightlife of East London. The look showcases a beautiful platinum blonde on afro-textured hair with a placement of Ultraviolet through the focal areas at the front of a flat top shape and I chose to submit the image to demonstrate my technical ability to cover all hair textures with acuity.

In-salon VS high fashion I believe this can be used both in the salon and in creating competitive, high fashion looks with varied degrees of colour saturation giving you thousands of combinations based on whether your client wants her colour to whisper, talk or shout. I hope you’ve enjoyed the six part insight into my winning collection and that you have found it informative or insightful. I wish you all a very successful 2021 and a gorgeous summer!

Black and white

versus colour

Award-winning hairdresser and salon owner, Martin Crean from MODE Hair, Chipping Campden, shares his tips on when to go full colour and when to make it monochrome.

Images are a great way to share your work, whether they are part of a professional collection, or just a snapshot that you post on social media. Normally, colour images have the biggest impact, particularly on an Instagram grid. But sometimes black and white can capture a look and a mood in a unique way, infusing an image with extra power. So Colour or Black and White? I opted to shoot this image in colour because the tone of the hair was such an important part of the overall look. How else could I show that the hair was this wonderful vibrant peach other than using colour photography? I love the contrast of the peach hair against the muted background. I also love how the wet-look finish of the hair gives the overall image more depth as it creates more contrast between the dark roots and the lighter ends. I also think this finish really helps highlight the model’s great bone structure and expressive face. The black and white version of this image creates an overall more innocent feel. The emphasis is more on the model’s face and expression — less defined by the hair colour. For me it tells a very different story.

TIPS FOR SHOOTING IN BLACK AND WHITE 씰

씰

씰

씰

Avoid the hair looking too flat by working with light and dark dimensions to create texture in the hair. Where hair is brunette, use lighting to emphasise the shine line to avoid the hair looking like a solid block. You can also create panels of light and dark using white or silver sprays. With blonde hair use a darker backdrop so that the hair leaps out of the image rather than blending in.

TIPS FOR SHOOTING IN COLOUR 씰

씰

씰

Always think about creating contrast between the model’s clothes and hair and the backdrop so that the hair does not get lost in the mix. Don’t overload the hair with product – this can lead to it losing shine and looking darker under the lights than you intended. Don’t rely on post-production to create beautiful colour – give the photographer a stunning look to work with.

We asked our friends in the industry what services clients have been asking for since re-opening, do their answers match with the requests in your salon?

Going for gloss We have noticed non-permanent colour gloss treatment becoming popular since re-opening and we think this will continue to get more popular as we come into the summer months. It’s a great treatment for clients to keep their hair colour looking vibrant, shiny and healthy in appearance. As the treatment only lasts for six weeks, it’s also perfect for those who change their mind often when it comes to their colour and want to come into the salon for a service without the long-term commitment. I particularly love recommending this service to brunettes, as they can come into the salon for this service in-between their full head colour services to keep their hair always looking glossy. Glossing services have been popular, although we’re expecting people to take these up on their next appointment as a follow up to the services clients have already had. Robert Eaton, Creative Director at Russell Eaton salons in Leeds and Barnsley & UK and Ireland Technical Director for Wella Professionals

We are doing lots of glossing, toners and glazing, and also treatments are really in demand – everyone wants super healthy, shiny hair again! Kerry Mather, KJM Salons in Fleet

Toning has also been incredibly popular within the salon with both our male and female clients. Particularly for those with blonde hair, toning can be a great option throughout the summer months if they want to be a bit more experimental, adding a blush pink tone through their hair or going for a more silver tone to give their colour a fun update for the season. Summer is here, the sun is shining, and we can socialise! So great looking hair is the all-important asset to look and feel fabulous. Clients will be asking for a few extra highlights to face frame and or to create hairband effect on the parting. This can be added in-between colour appointments to add extra lift around the face, perfect for the summer months. Also, blow out and styling will be popular in lunch hours and at the end of the day, styling looks to hold for a few days to create shine, movement and bounce to the hair. Tracy Hayes, Fudge Professional Global Colour Ambassador Robert Eaton

Calling for colour We have been on overdrive since we have come back after lockdown – clients are booking in for so many services! This is partly because it’s been such a long time since they have been in the salon, and they’re now taking the opportunity to look after themselves and give their hair some much needed care and attention. We are also noticing the Instagram affect – clients have really taken on board the advice and inspirational images so many hairdressers were sharing on social during lockdown and have come back to the salon with so much knowledge – they know exactly what treatment they want and why. We have seen lots of colour services since we have been open – from dark to light or extensive balayage work and we’re also dealing with corrective work after people tackled their own hair at home. We have found that appointment times have been longer, and the average bill is definitely higher, which has been great for salons. Robert Eaton, Creative Director at Russell Eaton salons in Leeds and Barnsley & UK and Ireland Technical Director for Wella Professionals

Samuel Chapman

Talking about treatments Within our salon at the moment and since our re-opening, many of our clients have expressed interest in conditioning treatments – it’s become 90% more popular than ever before. Having missed out on so many appointments, many clients have experienced dry and damaged hair, from the over exposure to the sun in the first lockdown, over use of heated appliances in the second lockdown and the exposure to the good old Scottish weather in the third lockdown. The drastic effect on the hair has been extremely harsh for many clients, who are keen to get their hair back to its prime. Kevin Paul Finnell, Creative Director, F&M Hairdressing

Clients at the moment are now very aware of just how quickly colour can fade, given the lockdowns which forced them to embrace colour fade. This in turn has made clients realise it is important to use professional products which help reduce colour fade as much as possible. Our clients are very open and interested when it comes to the products we are using and are continually asking on recommendations. Our most loved and most requested service is our K-Pak Color Therapy Luster Lock Treatment. Not only does this lock in colour, it also protects hair and adds a beautiful finishing shine. This can also be purchased as a retail product where clients can apply to the hair once per week to keep colour as vibrant as possible. Ijan Davies, JOICO European Design Team

I have noticed in the salon lots of clients coming in for a big blow-out. Callum Standen-May, Co-Owner of STANDENMAY

Callum Standen-May

Clients are loving their hair again and loving being back in the salon which is fantastic – the atmosphere is electric and once again the transformations are back. We’ve noticed that clients are ready to learn again and find out how to create new styles with their hair. From waves, to up-dos, braids to backcombing, we are using our appointments to educate clients on how to style their hair whilst making it more manageable every day. It’s great to see them get creative once again and we are enjoying every minute of teaching them new skills. Philip Bell, Ishoka Hair and Beauty

Coveting cuts I’ve noticed many clients coming into the salon to add a fringe to their haircut and to add layers into their current hairstyle. Adding a fringe or some layers into the hair is a great way for clients to change up their look and re-fresh their current style for the new season without opting for a complete re-style. Callum Standen-May, Co-Owner of STANDENMAY

James Henderson

At the moment, we are getting lots of clients requesting extensions to create additional volume on shorter styles. Clients appear to be playing safe with their hair choices, the very recent memory of salon lockdowns in their minds. They don’t want to be caught out again, with a full set of overdue hair extensions and obviously overgrown roots. With this in mind, we find lots are opting for low maintenance styles with a rooted colour blend and fewer extensions. I anticipate that once restrictions are fully lifted in July, we will see a full U-turn and clients will be opting more full on glam looks! James Henderson, owner of M Hair in Nottingham, Great Lengths certified stylist, and Great Lengths Global Charity Ambassador for The Little Princess Trust

It’s about creating a CULTURE not a BRAND. Everyone nowadays seems obsessed with the word ‘Brand’ and trying to create one! Without being rude, most people don’t even understand what one is, let alone know how to create one. The Oxford dictionary meaning for the noun ‘Brand’ is: the activity of giving a particular name and image to goods and services so that people will be attracted to them and want to buy them. Personally I feel this is where most people go wrong! If you try and create something that people will be attracted to rather than who you actually are, then you are in trouble from the outset and you will get found out. You will try and make things fit, or use buzz words that maybe won’t represent who you are or what you do. You will start to look at what others do successfully and try and copy it and that’s not authentic, it’s their culture, not yours… and that’s the key word culture! If you want to build success within your business or yourself you need to start with identifying, developing and then communicating your culture.

Dawson’s Cuts Contining this interesting new series SEAN DAWSON, General Manager at Adam Reed London, gets all culture club on us. The goes Oxford Dictionary definition of culture is; the customs and beliefs, art, way of life and social organisation of a particular country or group. Doesn’t this sound more authentic than the brand definition? If you want people to believe, engage and show loyalty to you then it has to be you. How many times have you sat in an interview and the Boss keeps telling you about how they want their company to develop or how they are looking to do all these new things very soon and you suddenly get that uncomfortable feeling that they are just telling you what they think you want to hear. Even worse is when they keep throwing out ‘buzz words’ about where they are going as a brand? It is important to remember that as hairdressers we are taught very early ‘how to build relationships’ and also how to find out as much information from a new client in a very short space of time during a consultation. We can sniff out BS in an instant and we are a very instinctual breed of people, so if you don’t start out telling

the truth then you are going to have a very short and turbulent existence. So before you rush off designing logos and t-shirts let’s start to look at how we identify YOUR culture. Firstly, you have to be 100% honest about ‘Who you are’. It’s no good doing the whole Social Media BS of putting out images of how we want people to perceive us, it has to be true, come from the heart and be a honest reflection of you and your beliefs. 1. Make a list defining The WHO, WHAT & WHY – start by thinking of YOU as a story, fictional please, and how would you like to tell that story. It’s really important that you tell YOUR story and don’t allow others to tell it for you. 2. Elevator Pitch Define what your business is, why YOU are doing it and where you want it to go - this will create a path for you to follow, help you steer it forward and remain consistent and true to whom you are as you go. Marketeers call this an ‘Elevator Pitch’ meaning if you bumped into an old colleague in lift and they asked you about your new company, how in a brief, persuasive speech would you spark interest in what your company does and stands for? Write down some key words and feelings you want your culture to embody, for example one of our key feelings that really sum up our culture at Adam Reed when we did this exercise was ‘a big warm cuddle’. 3. Positioning Think about how your company’s culture fills a particular client need in a way your competitors don’t. Think about things you have strong beliefs in even if they are outside of hairdressing and how can they be brought into your company’s culture. 4. Your Purpose Why YOU do what you do? How you plan to change the world for the better? Your statement of belief, hope and pursuit. What are you passionate about, what are you good at? 5. Your Values The most important principles you want to communicate through your culture. These act as a moral compass and help guide all that you do. 6. Your Personality How you want your culture to look, speak and behave. At Adam Reed; we are about being warm, open, passionate, mischievous and charming and I think we have nailed that.

028_PHR_AUG21_Layout 1 23/06/2021 09:45 Page 29

BUSINESS

7. Your Voice How you want to communicate So taking those key personality traits above, how do we communicate them at Adam Reed? Open & Warm – Friendly and generous in spirit We are authentic and real, speaking with compassion, honesty and integrity. There is a sense that we are comfy in our own skin. Passionate – Positive and bold We speak with a positive energy and quiet confidence that is captured in our active sentences and optimistic language. Mischievous – Irreverent and cheeky There is a definite twinkle in our eye that we express through a relaxed and sometimes playful sense of humour. Engaging and thoughtful We are interested in the world around us which comes across in our questioning language and collaborative approach. 8. Your Manifesto or Mission Statement Now is your chance to put all of the above together and create a rallying cry that captures the essence, beliefs and values of YOU, the person and your company. Be creative with this and not too corporate and boring. Remember this is the culture that you are going to be introducing new team members

and clients into. I love reading Manifestos that contain promises like; Care about people, places and ideas, know you are welcome, laugh from your belly or even bring your dog… but remember that’s our culture so make sure it represents you. OK so now you know what YOU are all about! Now you are ready to move on to all those other amazing things that go together to create your company or project. Always make sure that whenever you add something new that it encompasses all of your culture, whether that be an Instagram post or a recruitment ad. When you recruit or add people into your company circle make sure that they always share your values and your purpose. You want new blood to have their own personality but remember YOUR culture is the pillars of what your company has been built on and your team should always protect, promote and represent that at all times. If you and they consistently do that then guess what? Your culture will create a brand all of its own, and will be one that will be authentic, honest and will live on forever.

Ask any salon owner what the secret is behind a thriving salon, and you’ll no doubt get the same response every time. Is it your marketing or social media? Your amazing range of products on offer, or is it that you offer only the best freshly ground coffee? No – it’s your people. They are what creates the ‘experience’ your clients receive – they are the difference between your clients getting something they love, or just getting something ‘they asked for’. They are the friendly ears that your clients didn’t even realise they needed on a bad day whilst having their hair done. They are what keeps your salon running when you’re not looking.

5 ways to attract your dream team Co-founder of the HAIR UNCUT COMMUNITY and founder of SALON EDGE, Phil Collins advises on how to attract new staff members to your salon. So it goes without saying that you’ll want to create a team which is built upon the ethos you have created. Here are five pointers to bear in mind when you’re trying to attract your own dream team… Ignore the competition This may seem a trivial point, but you’re never going to be the only salon in town looking for great staff. You can either try to keep it hush-hush – not wanting to give anything away to competitors – or you can go all out proud that you’re expanding your team. Own it baby! Look at how you can use your recruitment drive to create positive publicity for the salon too, really singing your own praises. Your salon will have qualities which are unique to it – actively promote them so that any prospects with a similar mind-set will notice you and want to be a part of it too. Don’t focus on salary Unless your salaries are far superior to your competitors or industry standards, the wages are rarely the carrot which attracts great people. Focussing on salary attracts people who simply need money – that’s unlikely to be what you’re looking for. What you’re looking for are assets to your team so they will want to feel like an asset.

creative@hairuncut.com https://hairuncut.com

They’ll want to know what your overall package is that will make them feel valued and part of your longer term plans. If your staff know your overall strategy and what you’re all doing as a team, it encourages loyalty and longevity. If your prospects know that besides their salary they are getting a training programme, a mentor, that they’ll be a valued part of a team and there are prospects for their future – you’ll get so much more from them too and it will attract those who want more than just a day job.

Be VERY visible This runs far deeper than your recruitment drive. Using your social media channels is crucial. If you are a clear brand, you’ll know what you stand for, how you like to do things, what you’re all aiming for. These are all values which you’ll want your team to be aligned with and they are – quite handily – your qualifying characteristics. As part of a normal recruitment process, you’ll have criteria which you’ll want your recruits to meet. But it’s not just about you – you can’t call the shots any more as the talent pools are much smaller than they used to be. You need to appeal to THEM and represent something your best staff would be proud to be part of. If you have a clear brand identity, when you’re recruiting it should only need a few minutes on your social media for your potential prospects to get a great idea of what they’ll be part of. They will be able to qualify you as a match for their criteria and if you’ve been showing up online, your visibility will help them decide if they’d like you almost immediately. Build a network of brand ambassadors Adding to the visibility point, one of the key pieces in how your business operates as a whole is your brand identity. This will either attract or repel your team. The very things which fire you up could send another person running for the hills. Having a team who loves exposure for instance where you enter competitions and have ‘statement’ stylists who turn heads in town with their own distinctive style, is the last place your shy but warm-hearted ‘girl next door’ would want to work. Conversely, putting a super creative and award winning stylist who favours hot pink hair and tattoos into a conservative salon is going to be a faux pas of epic proportions. Your brand will do all of the groundwork for you and if done well, will make your recruitment needs much easier. A bird in the hand... This may not seem obvious given that we’re discussing how to attract your new prospects BUT the best way to attract new people is to already be a fantastic employer. Investing in the staff you already have right now, will always be better than having to keep looking for new blood so to speak. Loyalty and longevity are two-way – if you have an expectation of providing a safe place to work with great prospects and awesome education, your staff really won’t want to leave. If you have a high turnover of staff – I say this with love – but what is missing from your offering? Making sure your staff feel valued and included will be a great advert for your salon. When you’re recruiting, your prospects will want to ask your current team what it’s like to work for you – if you’ve been doing your own job properly you shouldn’t have anything to worry about ;) Hopefully these pointers have given you a few things to think about, with the main one being that you’re not only attracting when you’re recruiting. You’re always attracting – whether it’s staff or clients.

At Rainbow Room International we are thrilled to have collaborated with Action for Children, a charity that protects and supports children and young people, providing practical and emotional care and support, ensuring their voices are heard and bringing lasting improvements to their lives. The partnership came about as we realised the importance of mental health, which is something as hairdressers, we should be more aware of to keep both our teams and our clients safe whilst in the salon and to also be able to discuss sensitive subjects with them more confidently and in the right manner.

Charity begins in salon Creating a long-term partnership with a charity: Leigh Kerr, Academy Director at Rainbow Room International explains the benefits. The partnership is a win-win collaboration, as a small group of youngsters from the charity will be training with us for 8-10 weeks and will achieve a Level 1 qualification in hairdressing. This is a great opportunity for them to build on their skills and confidence and have the option to continue their career in hairdressing if they wish. At Rainbow Room International we have been in business for forty years and over this time we have developed an incredible relationship with a product company too. We have grown together and we now promote the products in any quotes we provide to press discussing hair looks that are on trend for the season and how to create them at home using the products, as well as using the products when we work backstage and on shoots. By doing this, the product brand has in turn used us for shoots and education and if they are approached for comments at the end on the products they have come to our stylists as the first port of call. This goes to show that working closely with other brands and businesses can have a really successful effect on you both and can open your doors to more opportunities.

Building relationships with like-minded businesses, local businesses and charities is not only great to be able to encourage these win-win relationships, and to show your community that you care, but it’s also great as you can help promote and gain awareness for the other brand. This was something we wanted to do with Action for Children, letting our clients know about the work we are doing with the charity, the work the charity do to help young people and how they can support the charity if they wish to do so. Clients have enjoyed hearing about the collaboration and really appreciate that our salons want to be more knowledgeable when it comes to mental health and being able to have sensitive conversations with our clients and our team should they come about. For us at Rainbow Room International, we believe that partnering with Action for Children is also having a positive impact on our team. Offering them new training and provide them with further knowledge on different subjects is a great way to increase their morale and have them feeling more confident and positive whilst in the salon and enabling them to deliver a better customer experience. Our goal with our partnership with Action for Children is that every Rainbow Room International stylist will have mental health qualifications and apprentices will have wellbeing and mindfulness courses throughout their apprenticeship. We feel this will attract young people to come and do their training with us instead of at competitor training academies, as we are offering them something extra that perhaps the other academies are not and that will give them further skills and knowledge on a subject that is so important in these current times. Lastly, partnering with a local business or charity will help establish brand trust whereby from regular contact, you will have created a great relationship and you can get in touch with your partnering company should any future opportunities arise. We are seeing this already with our relationship with Action for Children. Initially we wanted to get our team involved in Mental Health training and we have now been able to expand the training further throughout the year and organise further training looking at Suicide Prevention and Self-Harm Awareness. There are so many benefits to collaborating with local and likeminded business, however, for us partnering with Action for Children our hope is that at the very least, it will allow more people to talk about their mental health, which is often and important step within itself. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for the partnership and we hope that it will attract other salons and salon owners to look at mental health training and how important the training is for their team and clients.

Eating: It’s overrated, and anyway, who has got the time? If I got a pound or even a penny for the number of times someone whined at me that they do not have time for anything, especially ‘eating’, I’d be in early retirement writing, swimming and eating for a living. I try to explain to these people that they find time for other things equally as important, perhaps that’s the issue; eating isn’t as important as brushing your teeth; your hair, looking after your image, your phone, your car, and yet without it, we end up like Nigella, with silk PJs slumped in the SMEG with half a bottle of prosecco and tiramisu at midnight, and it’s only Tuesday.

Time is a collection of the past, the present, and the future. All rolled together as one entity. Have you ever thought about what you ate yesterday and what you won’t eat today, affecting how pleasant you are tomorrow? Food and the quality of food make up your emotional status; it helps you be more confident to make better decisions, to have more energy to think out of the box and most importantly, not let your monkey out of the box (monkey mind). Think of yourself like a bathtub except with holes in the bottom. The water is constantly pouring out, and you’ve got to keep the water running to keep submerged. The holes represent your stress. For example, not eating breakfast, skipping lunch, and eating dinner too late - all these actions create body anxiety. If you don’t plug the holes in the bath with good nutrition soon, the plasters will lose their stick and fall off, leaving you exhausted and having to take time off from work to start the healing process.

So perhaps your diet looks like this:

• • • •

Instant black coffee on waking and multiple cups throughout the day. Snacks on plain rice cakes, dried fruits, the boiled sweets/toffees at reception, more coffee, maybe a fizzy drink and all consumed on two feet! After all, who’s got the time to sit? Lunch: what’s lunch? Dinner at 9pm following a long day and maybe some alcohol, both suppressing your appetite and then increasing your need for food, and that’s when you find your best friend, the one that doesn’t judge you and doesn’t answer back, and is your emotional support: food and lots of it!

Suppose dinner is your biggest meal, having fasted unintentionally throughout the day. Your blood sugars, in that case, hormones, digestion, bowels and sleep, will potentially start to become problematic as you create a stress rollercoaster – rob Peter to pay Paul. So how can I get off this emotional food frenzy roller coaster and create some stability in my nutrition and health? It starts with asking yourself what you want and if what you do have is what you need. Then you can begin to make some changes. For me, these are my top actions to take to create a happier mind and body. Take your time and implement one at a time; once one step feels natural, take another. 1. Have a glass of water on waking (room temperature so it’s not a shock to your stomach where you hold anxiety). 2. Never drink instant coffee, predominantly black, on an empty stomach. Again it will dry up the acid that lives there, which is not only your first line in defence but helps you break down all that food, especially protein. Max out on two cups a day and make sure you have milk in it and some honey if you care for it. 3. Start the day with some fruit and protein; this will reduce the stress physiologically in your body, and start closing up those bath holes! 4. Drink coconut water and orange juice mixed to get your electrolytes and vitamin c in throughout the day, supporting your nutrition. 5. Be present for lunch outside, with a friend not on your phone and enjoy life; the scissors will be there when you return! Are you living your best life? If not, then you are the only person that can change it, step by step; with a bit of help and support along the way, you too can become the best possible you.

BUSINESS

“I’d like to implement as many measures I can to make my salon more environmentally-conscious, but how can I do this without it costing a fortune.” Phil says: “The sad truth is that being more eco-conscious definitely comes at a cost. But does that mean you shouldn’t bother? Absolutely not. I’m all for finding smart ways to boost your profits, but when it comes to saving the planet, the cost of NOT prioritising it is too high for our future - and our children’s. It’s only a matter of time before we’ll all be switching to more sustainable ways of running our salons. The world is changing and we have to adapt, whatever it takes. I’m sure you will have noticed as much as I have how clients are scrutinising our businesses and asking tough questions about what we’re doing to go greener. Whether it’s the products we’re using at the backwash or the small habits around the salon, none of us can afford to be wasteful anymore.

Fit for business As one of the most respected names in the hairdressing world, PHIL SMITH has built salon empires, launched multi-million selling haircare ranges and won countless awards for his business acumen. Here, he tackles your tricky post-Pandemic business issues... CLICK HERE TO WATCH THIS VIDEO OR GO TO WWW.RDR.LINK/HC0006

In fact, that’s the first tip I’d pass on. Take a really hard look at the amount of waste your business is generating and question how you can reduce it. The good news is that if you minimise unnecessary waste, it can boost your bottom line too. One area I’d recommend putting under the spotlight is your colour services. If you imagine a tube of tint costs around £15 and a quarter of that is being wasted by mixing up too much, your team could be pouring £3 down the plughole – and creating unnecessary pollution at the same time. The answer to this is surprisingly simple. Encourage your team to mix as they go and avoid overestimating how much colour they’ll need. It’s the same with foils. There’s a criminal amount of wastage related to this necessary but nonetheless non-eco-friendly material. While aluminium is recyclable, it is a tricky process made harder still after it’s come into contact

with chemicals. Train your team to cut foils to size depending on hair length – not one size fits all. I’ve also seen colourists use folds that are far too big. Trust me, going back to smaller folds and custom cutting your foils to size are small measures that will reduce the amount of foil your salon uses significantly. You must educate your team on these easy wins and then follow up to make sure they’re taking them on board. We try to do our bit at Smith England by recycling everything that we can – even the coffee pods that we use in the hot drink dispenser. Not all the measures will be things that your clients will see and while it can take some extra effort, if you’re organised in your processes there’s really no excuse not to be more conscious about what you’re throwing away. Products are another key area for pinpointing when opting for more sustainable choices. The big manufacturers are taking steps towards greener solutions, but the benchmark needs to be higher. As well as being a salon owner, I also have two product ranges. I took the decision a couple of years ago to make them more eco-friendly. It makes the process more costly, but the days of endless plastic production are over. If your suppliers aren’t doing enough already, take them to task – they need to be held accountable. This year alone, since my Phil Smith Be Gorgeous brand switched to PCR (post-consumer recycled plastic) I have saved over 21.8 tonnes of virgin plastic being created. I’m a tiny brand, so just imagine what the big players could do if pressured by all salon owners. It’s not good enough to be stocking ranges in bottles that are destined for landfill. Recycled and recyclable packaging is a must. Put pressure on your reps to switch to PCR or refillable alternatives. Water and energy consumption are two key areas that create an environmental burden for salons. Later this year, we’ll be replacing all our basins with sensor taps that that turn on only when being held, which cuts down on water wastage. Due to health and safety regulations post-COVID, we traded our traditional cotton towels to an eco-friendly alternative. More hygienic, but also biodegradable, eco towels cut down on the cost and up to 50 per cent of the energy consumption of endless laundry. We won’t be reverting back. Don’t underestimate the simple ‘switches’ you can make too. Turning off lights in unoccupied rooms or opting for motion sensors will save energy and money on your bills. It’s great that you want to implement as many measures as you can to make your salon more environmentally conscious. I’d honestly say that it is worth the effort and be reassured that the small amount of extra cost is being spent on things that really do matter. Rather than thinking you can’t afford it, I’d say you can’t afford not to.

SHOOT YOUR SHOT A Murder of Crows Sustainability and the environment has long been at the heart of Anne Veck Salons. Anne’s passion for the environment shines through not only her business but is also reflected in her breath-taking collections. In 2019 Anne Veck produced her award-winning collection Toxic Fashion and demonstrated the fashion industry’s lack of ethical and sustainable values. Anne used hair to express her mission to bring attention to the challenges our planet faces every day. Continuing this mission, Anne Veck now brings our attention to local sustainability. Anne’s latest collection A Murder of Crows is inspired by thoughts of the cycle of life and death, biodegradability, regeneration and sustainability at an organic and personal level. Shot in a local Oxford allotment Anne continues to create beautiful collections that reflect how passionate she is for the environment. A Murder of Crows embraces nature and all its surroundings, bringing the outdoors to life through her creative style. A Murder of Crows fashion is inspired by modern day fashion and shares hair story based around Victorian inspired styles, traditionally mixed with modern. “I always love working with one of my favourite photographer, Magic Owen, especially when we brainstorm a fabulous project like A Murder of Crows. Magic wanted to create an atmospheric, macabre shoot and this combined perfectly with my thoughts about regeneration, life, death & sustainability. Which led us to shoot in an allotment with added crows!” Anne Veck

Reality Revival With lockdown lifting tantalising close now, our hair hopes are pinned on a pure fashion fest of dressing up and a return to big, bold and beautiful hair. For Autumn/Winter 2021, ghd has partnered with session stylist Patrick Wilson to create a series of striking styles that bring his runway and red carpet experience to the salon. Think exaggerated shapes, extravagant updos and premium finishes that celebrate the art and craft of hairdressing and the sheer joy of dressing up.

“When ghd asked me to style this collection I was so excited: I wanted the hair to feel like it really had my stamp on it: cool girl hair with an edge, taking in classic techniques as well as the more wearable styles we see on girls today. It's expensive, beautiful, healthy hair and I can't wait to share it with you,” says Patrick.

CLASSIC COUTURE Built around a classic shape, this elegant and ultra-wearable up-do combined inspiration from two super-chic shows: Emilia Wickstead AW21, where sleek, nape-snuggling knots represented purity and strength, and Iris van Herpen Couture, where folded layers of hair were finished with vinyl shine. Both exuded a classic, elevated glamour, which served as the inspiration for this stacked chignon.

RUNWAY READY In ghd’s 20th anniversary year, what could be more perfect than a premium take on super-sleek hair? This look takes its cue from Versace AW21, which was described as an ode to shopping and packed with accessories and pieces that were not only reminiscent of a life left behind, but a desire to return to our new normal. Luxurious heavy hair, tucked neatly behind the ear, was also seen at Valentino’s Couture show, which incidentally served as the make-up inspiration for the ghd collection.

048_PHR_AUG21_Layout 1 23/06/2021 09:55 Page 56

FASHION SET This ultra-modern set harks back to the old-school glamour of the 1940s, as interpreted by Jeremy Scott in his retro salon-style presentation for AW21. The intimate showcase was a thought-provoking image of our current surreal lives: a preparation to gear up for our post-pandemic return to reality. Hair was full-on 1940s glamour, delivered with an air of modernity through a loose finish and soft texture.

048_PHR_AUG21_Layout 1 23/06/2021 09:56 Page 57

HAUTE COIFFURE This full volume look was inspired by the Schiaparelli AW21 collection, which was described by designer Daniel Roseberry as, “a dedication to the unexpected, the risky and the exuberant.” Jewellery that feels more like armour than pure decoration nestles amongst voluminous, peroxide hair. This season, more is more with a joyous, maximalist vibe.

home What they’re watching, reading and doing. This month it’s hairdressing duo Jack and the Wolf…

The Book Jack – The Greatest by Mohammed Ali This is my favourite book of all time and one I always re-read and have done on several occasions. It’s very inspirational and can relate to so many different people who are in all types of situations and want to succeed in life. It shows that everything is possible if you work hard enough.

Lydia – Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a comedy science fiction franchise that never fails to make me laugh. It’s all about the misadventures of the last surviving man and how he hitchhikes his way throughout his journey. It’s definitely a book that keeps you wanting more!

The Film True Romance This is our favourite film as a couple and believe it or not had a huge impact on our very first date. We discussed our love for the film, the directors and the overall story line and we ended up getting matching True Romance Tattoos on our first official date!

The Boxset or the Documentary Jack – True Detective Who doesn’t love a crime series? True Detective is a firm favourite of mine – it’s thrilling, chilling and simply amazing. The unpredictable events keep you wanting more and more.

Lydia – Game of Thrones

The Playlist /Album Our salon playlist is all about the upbeat vibes, we like an electric atmosphere which keeps the positive vibes flowing! Innadance – Faithless Praise You – Fatboy Slim Dragonball Durag – Thundercat Concrete Schoolyard – Jurassic 5 Smalltown Boy – Bronski Beat Brooklyn Baby – Lana del Ray Laisse Tomber Les Filles – France Gall Still Sound – Toro y Moi Amira – Collage Half Full Glass of Wine –Tame Impala

Game of Thrones is my go to, I absolutely love it. I became instantly hooked and the creativity and storyline is just so incredible. I can’t see past this series, I could re-watch it again and again!

The Game Trivial Pursuit Who doesn’t love a good old game of trivial pursuit? We play this lots and still love it as much as we did the first time round!

THE ED:IT

Errol Douglas MBE needs no introduction! Pro Hair are delighted to have this ‘man about town’, on our team for 2021. He brings us just what we need, a little ‘eye on theprize’, a smattering of ‘ones to watch’ and some very meaningful motivational tools that we can adopt to make this year happen for each and every one of us. Awards fever... As I write this I am still in midst of the part of the year I always assign to AWARDS FEVER! Ever since I can remember they’ve played a integral part of my career – whether I’m nominated or enter myself or I’m a member of the team – I go into the party with the view that I’m in it to win it! From January through to early July and then an overspill to August if you’ve had the good fortune to be nominated for British Hairdresser of the Year – who work to a deadline of September! I can’t see a day when I won’t enter and want to win awards. To get acknowledgement and recognition from my peers is one of the things that keeps my creative spark alive. I take my hat off to all the publications and organisations that channel these awards – they act as a motivational tool and a very exciting gauge of what is happening, who is happening and how you feel you fit into the play of things.

So where does my year start? There are a lot of UK awards that I enter, not just me but my team as well – a mix of business and colour awards earlier in the year and then we start thinking about the creative awards – what categories to enter – will we be nominated for the British Hairdresser of the Year category again? Then it’s the international awards – talking AIPP and of course then Madrid-based International Hairdresser of the Year awards of which I currently wear the crown – and the Australian Hair Industry Awards. It goes on…

Also other glorious opportunities are open to us – whether its American Crew; Allstars; L’Oréal Colour Trophy, Goldwell’s Colour Zoom and Wella’s TrendVision – there is something for everyone. And then there’s organisations such as The Fellowship for British Hairdressing which give hairdressers of all levels the platform in their various creative divisions ClubStar, Colour Project, Project X, Project Men and F.A.M.E. Team – to really shine.

On the consumer side – Marie Claire and Woman & Home celebrate the high street hairdresser and there’s also one to look out for and that is the relaunched HAIR AWARDS which are to be resurrected in 2022 – here they celebrate best high street hairdressing salon and other accolades ranging from best professional shampoo right through to the best tools on the market place. Who’d have believed that a hairdresser would receive one of the greatest honours of all? Being awarded the MBE by Her Majesty the Queen in 2018 – had to be one of the most momentous times of my life. With hindsight I am so pleased that both my parents were alive and able to witness such an event more than the award itself.

To follow that came the Patron d’honour award presented by the Fellowship – who’d have believed that one of their first F.A.M.E. Team members would receive such an accolade two decades later? Who would have ever dreamed that by choosing a hairdressing career there would be so many beautiful avenues to take. Everyone has a chance of winning – you’ve just got to be persistent and keep your eye on the ball – remember if at first you don’t succeed – like me – try and try again!
