TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?

E

arlier this year the Office for National Statistics reported that the proportion spent online soared to the highest on record in April 2020 at 30.7%. Just to put that into perspective the proportion of online retail sales before the pandemic in February 2020 was just 19.7%. That seems like an ok figure I hear you say... particularly when all of the shops were closed during lockdown. But, and there is a big but, this has also led to an increase in counterfeit products being offered for sale online. Electrical Safety First reported that almost one in four Britons have purchased an electrical product online, sold by a thirdparty seller that was advertised as genuine, only to discover the product was counterfeit. Counterfeiting doesn’t just affect retail markets and certainly isn’t limited to products such as hair straighteners and expensive electronic goods. In fact, only this week I received a media briefing about counterfeit tools being offered for sale – the issue is currently under investigation. It is costing the electrical industry millions of pounds every year and is threatening the livelihood of people like you on a daily basis. A lot of work has already been carried out by a number of industry bodies who are active in many countries around the world to stem the supply of counterfeit products into the UK. But the fact remains that it is up to everyone to do their bit because working together as an industry is the only way that we can hope to stamp out this practice for good. If a product looks too good to be true then the chances are that it probably is, which is why you need to be on the look out for products which arouse your suspicion. The electrical industry spends a huge amount of time safeguarding their intellectual property and by doing so they are ensuring that the products supplied to the industry do exactly what they should and don’t come with any nasty surprises. The increasing number of counterfeit products which are entering the market are however undermining this professionalism. Unfortunately online marketplaces make it easy for counterfeit goods to make their way onto the market and as more and more trade moves online we need to be ever more vigilant. The message is therefore that we all need to work together. It isn’t enough to think that it is someone else’s problem, because we all have a responsibility to ensure that the products on the market are fit for purpose. The manufacturers are doing their bit to safeguard their products but you also have a responsibility to ensure that the products which you stock come from a source that you can trust. This isn’t just the latest bandwagon for us all the jump on – it’s serious, and it’s time for us all to act. See you next month

NEWS & VIEWS Renewed calls for tougher competency requirements

ECA CALLS FOR STRONGER COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS IN BUILDING SAFETY ACT The ECA has called for more stringent competency requirements in the new Building Safety Act, which came into law on 29 April. The Act was introduced as a Bill by the government nearly a year ago, following the Grenfell Tower disaster, in which 72 people died, and Dame Judith Hackett’s subsequent independent report. Commenting on the Building Safety Act, ECA Technical Director Mike Smith

said: “The new Act represents the biggest step so far towards safer homes since the tragic Grenfell Tower fire of 2017. But, the last-minute removal of the legal requirement for the role of Building Safety Manager was disappointing. The responsibility has been passed on to an ‘accountable person’ – but this risks confusion that could potentially impact the safety of a building in future. “The competence of those working in buildings and on buildings now has a

higher profile than ever before, but it cannot be overstated. “From our perspective, the Act should place more responsibility on contractors, to ensure that the people doing the work to build and maintain high rise residential buildings are suitably qualified and competent. We are now counting on secondary legislation for more stringent competency requirements that will help make UK households even safer.”

SIGNIFY ILLUMINATES SHEFFIELD TRAMLINE

It is estimated over “800,000 kWh energy will be saved each year. ”

Signify has worked closely with Sheffield Stagecoach to upgrade the lighting for all platforms on the Sheffield Supertram, one of the UK’s busiest tramlines with traffic of 10.5 million passengers every year. The upgrade is a move from energy-intensive SON-T lamps to the new Philips TrueForce Core LED Road 40W lamps, which promise improved white light quality in customer-facing areas for increased safety and enhanced colour rendering for better visibility. In addition, with this replacement, it is estimated over 800,000 kWh energy will

6 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

be saved each year by using the Trueforce LED lamps, as the lighting installed uses 80% less energy. After several months of extensive research into the right lighting solutions, Sheffield Stagecoach found the Philips TrueForce Core LED Road LED lamp 40W to be the perfect fit that meets all necessary specifications and objectives for upgrading the lighting. This replacement to the new SON lighting dramatically reduces the maintenance costs of lamps and the ageing electromagnetic gear system by reducing the need for frequent replacements and maintenance visits.

ERA raises £20,000 for charity

ERA RAISES £20,000 FOR HOPE HOUSE CHILDREN’S HOSPICES ERA has raised over £20,000 for Hope House Children’s Hospices, its nominated charity for 2020 and 2021, which supports seriously ill children and their families. Over the last two years, employees from across every area of ERA’s operations have taken part in a series of fundraising activities to raise vital funds for the charity. This included the ‘GMF 100’ Cycling Challenge, which saw employees take to their saddles to cycle 100 miles in a single day. Helen Downer, President of Tyman UK and Ireland, commented: “We are delighted to have supported Hope House Children’s Hospices over the last two years and to have raised crucial funds to help the charity provide essential services.

“With many of our fundraising efforts put on hold in 2020 due to the pandemic, we chose to select Hope House as our nominated charity for a second year running, which allowed us to continue our fundraising efforts and raise a further £11,934 in 2021.” Hope House Ty Gobaith Children’s Hospices supports over 750 families throughout Shropshire, Cheshire, Mid and North Wales, providing palliative care for children with life-limiting conditions, in addition to counselling and bereavement support. Brian Foster, UK Sales Manager at the rapidly expanding company, said: “C-TEC is on a mission to lift industry standards and the quality of fire installations across the UK. We’ve always provided free

educational CPD-certified seminars and product training to promote best practice and raise awareness but the launch of our BS 5839-1 ‘TRAIN-TO-GAIN’ courses signals our intention to take it to a new level. “We’re confident the courses will attract a high level of interest as they’re reasonably-priced, centrally-located and specifically designed to encourage people working in the fire industry to embark on a journey to boost their competency, expertise and professional performance – and achieve an industry-recognised qualification in the process.”

CHARITY UPDATE

MENTAL HEALTH MONTH

T

his Mental Health Month, we’re focusing on the impact addiction has on people’s lives, work, and relationships. The most common addictions in the UK are tobacco followed by alcohol. Addiction is a mental illness and can be a contributory factor in the development of other mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and psychosis. It’s a common problem, but help is available. Brian had felt a profound sense of loss since his fiancé had died many years ago. As a result, his solution for dealing with emotional pain had been to consume alcohol. He went on to get married and have a child, but after years of animosity and arguing, he and his wife finally separated. The EIC supported him in getting his own place to live, but when he did, his use of alcohol spiraled out of control. Brian started drinking every day and this went on for months before he settled into a binge-drinking pattern. He could go for months without a drink, but whenever anything major happened in his life, he returned to drinking heavily. One binge session lasted eight weeks. He started to feel suicidal and would hide in a cupboard

under the stairs if he heard anyone approach his front door. Eventually, Brian decided enough was enough. He had lost three and a half stone and he desperately wanted to be there for his seven-year-old autistic son. After discussions with the EIC, he went into a community detox programme and returned to work. His wife was dropping off his son one night when Brian saw someone else in the car with them. This was enough to make him lose control again and resulted in him not being able to see his son for a month. Feeling isolated with no family and few friends left, he started drinking heavily again. When he spoke to the EIC late one Saturday night, Brian had reached his lowest point. He didn't think he could make it through another day. We booked him straight into rehab. We organised the medical treatment he needed to cope with the effects of alcohol withdrawal and to prevent him from having any seizures. After a month in rehab, we helped Brian to find a new flat, paying the deposit and two months’ rent. He is now going to regular AA meetings and living his life without alcohol.

Brian is grateful to the EIC for helping him get his life back on track and giving his son his father back. He now has a full and proper relationship with his son, enjoying go karting, swimming and the cinema. He says he wouldn’t be here today were it not for the help provided by the EIC. The help Brian was able to access is due to the support of the EIC and the powerLottery. It means he got the treatment and support he needed to address his addiction and get his life on the right track, and relationship with his son back. Without powerLottery, the EIC would not be able to offer support to people like Brian. That’s why we need you to become a powerLottery player to help EIC to continue supporting our industry members. powerLottery is the only lottery made for our industry by our industry. It gives players 40 chances to win cash prizes ranging from £50 to £1,000 every single month. A £10,000 draw bi-yearly gives you even more opportunity to win BIG. FACE TO FACE

PEW chatted to Mark Abbott, Managing Director of Ansell Lighting, about the company’s 30th anniversary and the future direction of the lighting sector.

FACE TO FACE ANSELL LIGHTING Q

Ansell is celebrating its 30th year – how has the lighting industry changed in that time and what has the company done to adapt? A. The lighting industry is almost unrecognisable from 30 years ago, with the advent and widespread adoption of LEDs, the introduction of smart lighting and the focus on energy efficiency. The industry has become much more reactive and the size of the product market has expanded – our catalogues in the early ‘90s featured about 150 products, now it is in excess of 3,000. The use of LEDs in different products has also grown substantially in the 20 years since they were introduced – from expensive lamps to their application in firerated downlights, architecturally designed luminaires and in anti-glare products for workplace comfort. It is the ability to adapt our products and services that has helped us to reach the 30 year milestone. We have internal and external product councils that consult with installers, electrical engineers, contractors and architects to ensure that we are always ahead of the game in terms of product development and service offerings. In recent years that has included a significant focus on the development of our smart lighting offering – OCTO – which enables us to offer more to our customers in terms of both energy efficiency and cost savings, something that has never been more important in the face of rising energy bills and growing environmental challenges.

Q

What do you believe will be the next significant growth area in the lighting sector? A. Without doubt smart lighting is the biggest growth area for lighting across all sectors. Sales of smart home technology are increasing year on year and smart lighting is playing a significant part in that, but it is also set to have a big impact on commercial settings too, especially in postpandemic office environments. Wholesalers will play an important role in the growth of smart lighting, in terms of offering education and expertise to installers. As a manufacturer we offer a range of training and support materials to help communicate the benefits, and ease of installation of smart lighting.

16 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

OCTO, our connected lighting solution and product range now produces data, which is useful to the customer, allows us to make spaces work harder for them and also reinforces the benefits of spending more on the up-front investment in lighting – something which will be especially important as the commercial market for smart lighting grows. Smart lighting is all about added convenience and efficiency and so the interoperability of the new solutions and products on the market – which allows them to be integrated with all eco systems such as Alexa, Hey Google and Siri - is also key for installers and end users. Moving forward we will be launching an asset management and reporting system that will allow building managers to monitor their

016_PEW_JUNE22_Layout 1 11/05/2022 14:51 Page 17

energy performance data and audit trails which will further demonstrate the benefits of smart lighting systems.

The use of LEDs in “different products has also

Q

grown substantially in the 20 years since they were introduced.

How have changing attitudes towards employee wellbeing and visual comfort impacted on the lighting being used in commercial buildings? A. There were already signs of growth in this area pre-Covid but this seems to have accelerated more recently as the return to work continues. one of the many benefits of smart lighting is the ability for employers to allow employees to control their own lighting environment. We had a good example of this recently in a government building in Peterborough where outdated Pl/CFl tile fittings had been replaced with our modern endurance leD recessed panels. some staff complained of eye strain and headaches due to the increased brightness so using our oCTo system we enabled individual control of each panel to better suit the time of day and personal requirements. it also saved on energy costs by using the timebased controls to deliver varied output throughout the day and ensuring lights were off out of hours.

Q

How easy is it to integrate connected or smart lighting into a property without an existing automation system? A. it is really not as daunting as you may think and does not have to involve rewiring. many smart lighting products now have the smart technology embedded in them, so it is quite straightforward to retrofit smart lighting by simply replacing old luminaires with enabled or smart products. The control element comes from the smart lighting system, which has its own interface using either Wi-Fi or bluetooth, without the need for a hub. lights can then be controlled by an app on a smartphone, remote, motion

”

sensors, existing wall switches or even voice control and integrates with most major connected ecosystems.

Q

What should wholesalers consider when selecting lighting products to stock? A. stocking a varied range of products is a great place to start. as a wholesaler you need to cover as many angles as possible, from fire-rated downlights and commercial products to architectural and residential luminaires. Plus, a selection that showcases all of the benefits of smart lighting, from smart lamps and complementary accessories such as plugs, remote controls and sensors to products that have smart technology embedded in them. a key consideration should always be stock availability too. as a manufacturer if we can’t provide stock we are letting our customers down. We hold a huge amount of stock, with 99% availability and next day delivery so that you can offer the same to your customers.”

Q

What are Ansell’s plans for the future?

A. “it’s going to be an exciting time in the next few years as the industry continues to evolve – and we will evolve and grow with it. We have already made great strides in growing our export business which will continue and from a product perspective we will continue to innovate. it is estimated that leD saturation in the uK market will reach 96% in the next couple of years so

we are looking to added value services associated with lighting. For 2022, we intend to celebrate our 30th birthday throughout the year with events and launches – including 90 new products in our latest catalogue which is out now, supporting our charity our blue light and a community campaign that will launch around the time of our official birthday in august aimed specifically at wholesalers and installers. The lighting industry is almost unrecognisable from 30 years ago, with the advent and widespread adoption of leDs, the introduction of smart lighting and the focus on energy efficiency. The industry has become much more reactive and the size of the product market has expanded – our catalogues in the early ‘90s featured about 150 products, now it is in excess of 3,000. our customers will love PIRs more than ever with the way energy prices have been going – and they will be familiar enough with the basics of what these automatic switching devices can do to expect something a bit extra from you. The extras you can add right now include ‘absence detection’, a slightly different approach than traditional presence detection that is now made more affordable by Timeguard. This new addition to the trusted Timeguard range helps you to design a flexible set up that matches the way people occupy and use their premises. Now they have even more control over energy consumption and avoiding energy being wasted by lighting and HVAC systems working in empty areas. You’ve probably already realised the added value and importance of branded quality assurance and the reliability that it

With the introduction of absence detection PIRs, end users can benefit from greater control and flexibility. PEW hears from Timeguard on how occupancy detection can now be catered for by a single device. brings. After all, PIRs are devices typically installed high up being either surface mounted, or flush into ceiling apertures, certainly awkward places that you really don’t want to have to revisit to replace duds. Now let’s look at what else ought to be on your checklist for PIRs: ● Easy set up and reconfiguration should

rank high on your list. Time is money. ● Ratings you can trust and confidence

that the PIR really is tested and rated for the right LED load, as you may want it to switch multiple lights. ● Good looks are important. Office rents and interior fit outs aren’t cheap. People won’t appreciate the wiring of ugly accessories. ● Functionality: do you need lights that simply react to people walking around such as entering washrooms and stairwells? Or will occupants be sitting quietly at a desk in which case you need presence detection. ● Can you offer the alternative of absence detection for some or all parts of the property?

22 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

Presence/absence detection Presence detection was once prohibitively expensive compared to motion detection, but now, sensitivity should never be an issue thanks to technical advances. Most PIR suppliers will now offer highly sensitive presence detection at the core of their detection fields so you can ensure even the most sedentary desk workers remain safely lit at all times. The next challenge for the market is meeting a growing awareness of – and demand for - absence detection in the mass market. Once again, Timeguard has a lead in supplying affordable devices to wholesalers. What though, do people actually understand by absence detection? The main difference between presence and absence detection is that presence detection is fully automated and involves devices detecting someone entering an area, switching on the lights, and then turning them off again at a pre-set time after the area is clear. Absence detection is where people switch the light on manually (e.g: retractive wall switch) and

022_PEW_JUNE22_Layout 1 11/05/2022 14:39 Page 23

SPECIAL REPORT

manually (e.g: retractive wall switch) and then, as with presence detection, the lights turn off automatically when the area is empty of people. Where might installers choose to use these approaches to occupancy detection? Presence detection is probably most used in areas that are likely to have regular and/or high people traffic, especially where there is never much natural light, such as WCs, corridors, stairwells, and store cupboards etc. Absence detection in contrast may be preferred for the likes of classrooms, meeting rooms and break areas, where you want to avoid nuisance switching as people just pass by. Single device solution The good news is that both sorts of

occupancy detection can now be catered for by a single device, where you can change their functionality from one form of occupancy detection to the other. That’s certainly handy as we move post-pandemic and the ever more flexible use of offices and workspaces. If ever a customer is going to be changing their mind, it’s now. The new Timeguard presence and absence detectors, can switch up to 600W of LEDs and an optional remote control is also available for making them easy to set up and adjust when used singly or in parallel. These detectors are available in both single channel and dual channel models, and enable you to align, say, heating or air conditioning with presence/absence for that extra energy saving economy.

Both sorts of occupancy “detection can now be catered for by a single device.

CABLE MANAGEMENT

THE PERFECT

PARTNERSHIP PEW discusses the importance of cable management supplier/wholesaler partnerships with Stephen Roberts, Head of Sales at CMD, and Paul Conneely, Business Manager at Edmundson Electrical.

‘‘A

s an electrical manufacturer, we often work closely with electrical wholesalers to distribute our products into the market and onto key projects,” says Stephen Roberts, “but if we simply treat them like a middle man, we are failing the contractors that install our systems and in turn their clients”. That’s why, investing in nurturing those relationships is so important to both parties.” When it comes to nurturing the relationship with Edmundson Electrical’s Blackfriars branch in London, CMD has been consistent in leveraging the benefits of collaboration and a shared approach to customer service for more than a decade. CMD has become the Blackfriars branch’s single largest supplier, accounting for a significant proportion of the business’s £20M turnover last year, across CMD’s Betatrak powertrack and Power Hub power distribution systems, floor boxes and accessories, and under desk power distribution modules.

Building relationships “There is a strong element of solid personal relationships with the CMD team,” explains Paul Conneely, business manager at Edmundson’s Blackfriars. “I have been dealing with the company’s Power Distribution sales manager, Paul Allen for about the past five years, along with area sales managers John Archer and Jason Broughton. I also maintain regular contact with Stephen since he joined CMD five years ago. They are very proactive about keeping in touch, whether for a specific project or just to touch base. We have an open dialogue that has developed into a partnership based on trust and, just as colleagues often do, we have become friends as well as business contacts.”

Investing in nurturing “those relationships is so important to both parties.

Stephen Roberts

Paul Conneely

One of the ways in which CMD and Blackfriars add value to the supplier/wholesaler relationship is the close collaboration on large projects that have been specified and will be going to market for procurement. Stephen continues: “Our team offers technical sales; they are highly experienced electrical professionals who work with M&E consultants to develop the specification and ensure compliance. As a result, we often have the inside track on projects that are coming up and which contractor has been awarded the electrical fit out. By working with a partner like Edmundson’s Blackfriars, we can help them with their business development goals as well as ensuring that we benefit when the project remains true to a CMD specification. “We know from our close relationship with the Blackfriars team that any project we are working on together will receive excellent service, and that they will work collaboratively with us should any technical support be required. That means we’re

confident in giving them the heads up, knowing that it will lead to a smooth supply chain journey and excellent experience of the CMD brand for the contractor.” Mutual benefits The commercial benefits of the relationship work both ways for CMD and Edmundson’s Blackfriars, with the wholesaler’s team prioritising the CMD product when customers have a generic power distribution request, or where switching to CMD could save the customer time and/or money. Paul explains: “We know the CMD products and the quality and functionality they offer, we also know the level of technical support CMD can provide, and we have a large stockholding so we can offer customers a rapid turnaround on their order, whether they are local to us within the M25 or further afield. “All of this makes a very compelling case for us to steer the customer towards CMD products and we can often benefit the customer by giving them a sound business case for making the switch. This might involve providing an integrated, single source supply from distribution board to workstation with a complete CMD solution, delivering a five per cent cost saving, and ensuring immediate product supply with reliability of availability. “Over the past year, availability and lead times have become significant differentiators so offering high quality standards with rapid supply and cost savings is very compelling. It allows us to increase our sales volumes while benefitting both CMD and our customers, many of whom never switch back once they’ve experienced CMD’s products and service.” Shared expertise Alongside the technical support that CMD offers the sales and customer service teams at Edmundson’s Blackfriars branch, the branch has its own CMD specialist, Chris Frampton, who has the technical knowledge required to advise customers.

Blackfriars branch, or in our new showroom, or both.”

“Chris has been trained by the CMD team,” Paul continues, “so he can answer most of the questions customers might ask and provide valuable advice, ensuring they purchase the right combination of products for the specification. Indeed, most of our sales team have had some training from CMD and have visited the company’s showroom in Clerkenwell, which ensures they are more engaged with the product range from both a technical and commercial point of view.” Thanks to COVID restrictions, followed by a busy period as the electrical fit out market recovers, product demos from CMD have not been as regular as they were in the past at Edmundson’s Blackfriars, but, with a planned move to a new showroom on the horizon, Stephen expects that to change over the coming months. “Product demos are one of the ways in which we can help wholesaler partners to add value to their customer relationships and offer an integrated service. We’re looking forward to the opportunity to host joint events in the future, either at the

A partnership approach CMD is not the only supplier that Edmundson’s Blackfriars works with in informal partnership, any more than Edmundson’s Blackfriars is CMD’s only wholesaler partner, but the two companies are evangelical about the shared benefits the relationship brings them. “In a competitive market, we have to give contractors a clear reason to choose us,” Paul adds. “By working closely with suppliers like CMD, we can provide cost savings and a reliable commitment to short lead times, along with technical knowledge, and a solutions-based approach to sales. We have to do more than simply fulfil orders for our customers; we need to be proactive in developing customer relationships, offering innovative solutions and adding value through knowledge and service.” Stephen adds: “We work with both major chains and independent wholesalers in a way that leverages the expertise of our team to complement theirs, both commercially and technically. The goal for both us and our wholesaler partner is to develop sustainable customer relationships that lead to repeat business, and that’s what we’ve achieved with Edmundson’s Blackfriars.”

CABLE MANAGEMENT

PREMATURE THINKING Jake Green, Technical Engagement Manager with Scolmore Group, considers the general requirements of Regulation 521.10.202.

A

fter several tragedies, Regulation 521.11.201 (AMD 3 BS 7671: 2008) was introduced; its purpose being to limit the risk to firefighters from entanglement by cables when they entered or exited a premises. This regulation has now been renumbered as 521.10.202 but remains essentially the same except for the removal of any reference to escape routes. It now reads: “Wiring systems shall be supported such that they will not be liable to premature collapse in the event of a fire.”

This requirement should not be confused with the recommendations of standards like BS5266-1 (emergency lighting) and BS5839-1 (fire detection and fire alarm systems), which recommend methods of cable support to maintain circuit integrity during a fire.

Jake Green

Escape routes and BS7671 The original regulation referred to escape routes, and this generated a level of confusion: ‘How should escape route be defined?’ BS7671 defined escape routes differently to that used in other guides, regulations, and legislation. For example: l BS7671 – ‘Path to follow for access to a

safe area in the event of an emergency’. l Building standards technical

handbook – …means a route by which a person may reach a place of safety…’. l Approved Document B in England and

Wales – …that part which a person has to traverse before reaching either the safety of a final exit or the comparative safety of a protected escape route... The removal of ‘escape routes’ from the regulation now means that it applies to all areas of the installation. Premature collapse There is no specific definition of

26 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

‘premature collapse’ to be found in Part 2 of BS7671. One dictionary definition of ‘premature’ is, ‘occurring or done before the usual or proper time; too early’. Since the purpose of Regulation 521.10.202 is not to maintain the critical signal path, rather to limit the risk to firefighters; premature collapse should be considered in relation to that single purpose. Electrical contractors, network installers and the like are not best able to judge how fires behave, the likely temperatures that will be attained, nor how firefighters will carry out their role within a premises that is on fire. It is important, therefore, that electrical contractors and other installers give due consideration to the support given to wiring systems to provide maximum reasonable application of Regulation 521.10.202. Scolmore group company Unicrimp offers a comprehensive range of cable accessories within its Q-Fire fire-rated range that are designed to provide the necessary protection from premature collapse. There is a great deal of responsibility placed on contractors to apply Regulation 521.10.202, not because they want to meet minimum expectations, rather because they want to protect firefighters who are working under extremely dangerous conditions. An electrical contractor should consider, as a minimum, the following: l Wall fixings – Careful consideration should be given to the mass of the

026_PEW_JUNE22_Layout 1 11/05/2022 13:18 Page 27

CABLE MANAGEMENT

wiring system that is to be supported (including the trunking, cable tray, etc. with the cables in situ). l Will the structure of the building maintain sufficient fire resistance to permit cables to avoid the need for metallic supports? Will such supports be sufficient if firefighters damage ceilings when applying water? l Cable clips – metallic clips are essential as indicated by Note 3 and 4 of Regulation 521.10.202. l Brackets or internal clips for PVC trunking – to keep the lid or cables in place (see Note 3 of Regulation 521.10.202). Conclusion Electrical contractors should carefully consider their responsibilities when installing wiring systems. Under fire conditions, failure to make the right installation choices may lead to serious consequences.

TEST EQUIPMENT

BEST OF THE

With PAT testing equipment being as user friendly as never before, wholesalers have a great opportunity to upsell, says Steve Dunning, Managing Director of Martindale Electric.

I

n accordance with the Electricity at Work Regulations (1989), any electrical equipment that has the potential to cause injury must be maintained in a safe condition. Designed to help raise the standards of electrical safety in the workplace, Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) ensures that electrical appliances and equipment that have been classified as ‘portable’ are safe to use. Although the requirements are clear in their intent, they do not specify what needs to be done, by whom or how frequently. Organisations that neglect the inspection and testing of appliances or fail to nominate a competent or appropriately trained individual risk invalidating their insurance policies and endangering lives. Should a fault arise in an appliance that is left unchecked or undetected by an underqualified individual, the consequences could prove fatal. According to the Health and Safety Executive, 25% of all reportable electrical accidents involve portable appliances. From these figures, it is clear that a large number of incidents and injuries could be prevented with proper electrical checks, inspections and safety tests.

TEST Given the importance of PAT testing and the fact it is still a vital way to keep users of electrical appliances safe, there is a good opportunity for electrical wholesalers to advise on and even upsell PAT equipment to their customers. Trade counter advice A little bit of knowledge at the trade counter will help the customer choose the right tester for the job in hand. For instance, often overlooked but vitally important, is that the user covers all bases with the capability to test not only appliances, but mains extension leads too. Ideally, a unit will have a good range of readily available accessories for use across a wide range of applications. A small, lightweight design is ideal for maximum portability and a backlit display is particularly handy for use in a wide range of locations. If you can, opt for equipment with easy-to-read help guides on the tester itself or on-screen. One button operation makes testing incredibly easy and a unit with a clear pass / fail indication with test results on-screen makes light work of record keeping. A soft carry case allows the unit to be used without having to unpack and repack

28 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

which speeds up the process for maximum efficiency. Furthermore, by selecting a rechargeable unit you can optimise efficiency and reduce running costs. There is now an extensive range of portable appliance testers available to suit a wide range of applications including some which just offer a simple pass/fail result. When it comes to testing portable appliances, the HPAT Series of portable appliance testers from Martindale Electric, one of the most trusted brands in electrical safety, enables both contractors and competent in-house personnel to quickly and safely verify the electrical safety of all types of appliances. Light and bright Designed to perform safety checks in accordance with the IET Code of Practice, the lightweight HPAT Series of rechargeable handheld testers are designed for ease of use, with one button automatic testing and clear connection details shown on the tester. The small lightweight design and one button operation make the HPATs ideal for testing in all locations, be it under a desk or behind a monitor. The bright backlit display

028_PEW_JUNE22_Layout 1 11/05/2022 12:11 Page 29

TEST EQUIPMENT

provides a clear pass/fail indication. For more demanding PAT applications, other more sophisticated testers are available which incorporate a greater range of tests and have the ability to store the test results for later recall on-screen, such as the HPAT600. For downloading results to a PC in order to manage assets and re-test requirements, Martindale offer the MPAT Plus with MPATSUITE software. To keep running costs down and to ensure that no time is lost due to flat batteries, a good solution is to choose a battery powered rechargeable PAT tester which can also operate from a mains power supply such as the HPAT500 and 600. The capability to easily test mains leads and extension leads is essential and it’s useful to have connection instructions either onscreen or on the tester as a reminder of what to do when used infrequently. Martindale has launched a dedicated ‘Essential Guide to PAT Testing’ area of its website crammed with useful information, hints, tips and an overview of its popular HPAT series of PAT Testers.

DELIVERING RESULTS IN TESTING TIMES As it strives to stay ahead of the game in the highly competitive lighting sector, Ovia welcomes the recent endorsement from the Lighting Industry Association, Europe’s largest trade association for lighting equipment professionals.

O

via made a significant investment in new testing equipment, and a cuttingedge photometry luminaire testing scheme in 2020, to bring the company’s light testing facility in house. The company purchased its own Goniophotometer device and signed up to the revolutionary Gonio photometry luminaire testing scheme, which was created by the Lighting Industry Association (LIA), together with its partner Acal BFi, to enable lighting manufacturers to offer efficient third party certified luminaire performance testing.

Speed and reassurance As well as radically speeding up the testing process for Ovia’s lighting products, the ground-breaking scheme also offers reassurance when it comes to validating photometric measurements such as Lumens per Watt and related performance claims. The Scheme is built around the class leading Viso systems LabSpion goniometer. Its cutting-edge technology eliminates the need for a traditional goniometer and/or integrating sphere and allows manufacturers to perform these tests quickly and accurately on their own premises, without the need for a large dedicated dark room.

Full photometric scans can take from as little as two “minutes and once ready, the data is sent securely via a dedicated cloud server to the LIA Laboratory for validation.

It gives participants the ability to scan light sources and luminaires quickly and simply, and create quality, easy to understand light measurement data. Full photometric scans can take from as little as two minutes and once ready, the data is sent securely via a dedicated cloud server to the LIA Laboratory for validation. The LIA Laboratory will then be able to issue third party reports without the need for product samples to be transported around the country or the world. Magnificent seven Now, in recognition of Ovia’s laboratory facility, the LIA Laboratory has recently welcomed the company to the LIA Gonio Photometry Scheme as a registered Photometric Laboratory. This certification means that Ovia meets the requirements of the LIA Technical Scheme Document ‘TSD003 LIA Laboratory Registered Photometric Laboratories’ and thus is a LIA Laboratory Registered Photometric Laboratory for FarField Gonio Measurements. Ovia becomes one of an elite group of just seven organisations to have been granted this recognition for its luminaire testing facilities. Comments Mike Collins, Ovia Sales

Director: “The LIA LAB Certification is a tremendous achievement for us coming so soon after we set up the facility and it offers further endorsement and reassurance to our customers that our products meet the very highest standards. “A significant amount of time and expense is invested in the critical testing element of new product development. What the LIA Gonio Photometry Scheme does is give us total control and puts both the product development and final evaluation process literally in our hands. This means a much faster turnaround in getting products tested and out into the marketplace and this has proved a vital asset as we continue to expand and develop the Ovia lighting range.” He concludes: “As well as providing upfront validation of the performance of new products being developed it will also be vital in our ongoing surveillance to ensure that further batches of products being brought in are guaranteed to be of the same consistency in performance and quality.”

The future is bright In November this year, Ovia will have been trading as an independent lighting organisation for three years. The company continues to invest in new products and solutions to bring to the professional electrical contract market a vast range of high quality, competitively priced products that are available exclusively through the reliable wholesale channel. The product offer currently covers a wide range of sectors and includes domestic, commercial, industrial, utility, amenity, emergency lighting and floodlighting. Complementing the lighting products offer is a range of sensors to control devices – microwave and PIR control options. The benefits are numerous – they can add convenience, help save costs, improve safety and reduce environmental impact. With an impressive 900 individual product lines already available, installers can have confidence that there is a lighting product or solution to meet their every

requirement. Later this year the company will launch its fourth Ovia lighting catalogue. Issue 4 promises to be bigger than ever, with the introduction of innovative new products that will continue to meet the demands of the evolving lighting sector. Ovia has a huge resource to call on and a very experienced team in place to manage stocks and the supply chain to ensure that the company continues to deliver a first class service to its customers.

WORKWEAR & PPE

WHAT TO WEAR Peter Dumigan, managing director of the Hultafors Group UK, discusses workwear trends and the need for eco-friendly, technically advanced work clothes that are built to last.

I

n today’s climate of carbon footprints and wastefulness, environmental considerations are more important than ever for workwear brands. Snickers Workwear develops long-lasting, functional garments and this is also the cornerstone behind its sustainability work. Every product has an impact on the planet - the longer workwear lasts, the less our environmental impact. Snickers Workwear clothing has been tried and tested in extreme environmental conditions – cold, heat, wind and rain. But not only are these working clothes tested for performance, they’re now tested for ‘environmental sustainability’. What makes these garments so appealing to forward-thinking individuals and corporates alike is not only the comfort, functionality and ergonomic body mapping designs but also the 21st century fabrics found in the latest in sustainable, organic and sports fabric technologies. Snickers Workwear’s product design and development has always been driven by a continual investigation of user needs and experiences in as wide a range of working environments and weather conditions as possible. But nowadays, recyclability and carbon footprint impact is a key part of that evaluation. So, it’s not just workwear functionality and physical demands on the body that’s researched, it’s also the physical demands that product manufacturing and waste disposal place on the world around us that matters too.

Fabric technology and sustainability Contractors who want to be more than just cool and comfortable at work and do their bit for saving the planet will be interested to hear about the ‘verifiable sustainability’ in the new Snickers T-shirts and polo-shirts. The brand aims to be at the forefront of sustainability in workwear which is why the new lightweight polo and T-shirts are made of 100% recycled polyester with a bio-based, anti-odour finish, plus a smooth texture and efficient moisture transport for great working comfort. Sustainable Merino wool mid and base layer clothes are ‘mulesing-free’ and will help installers stay warm or cool because of the nature of their 100% allnatural Merino wool fabric that delivers optimal comfort for all kinds of working environments and leisure activities. Designed by nature for excellent ventilation and insulation, Merino wool is extremely soft and naturally odourpreventive for an all-day fresh feel. It’s also temperature-regulating, repels water, dirt particles and is anti-static.

32 JUNE 2022 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

Where recycling is concerned, the AllroundWork hoodies and gilets are a sustainable choice. Made from 100% recycled polyester, the clothes are comfortable and lightweight, offering great freedom of movement. They’ll also deliver just the right levels of warmth and comfort to keep your body warm in chilly early mornings or comfortably cool in the warmer evenings. Workwear choices in summer To stay cool and comfortable in warmer weather, workwear choices matter a lot. For optimum performance, workwear needs to deliver great ventilation, have a fabric that dries fast while still offering protection. When temperatures are on the up, ventilation is crucial. It can be achieved in different ways, either by how the workwear is designed or the functionality it delivers. Two of the main features Snickers workwear integrates into its workwear to offer great breathability are the 37.5 technology for cooling comfort and mechanical air flow. The fabric in your workwear affects how comfortable you’ll be throughout the workday. Cheap workwear that features poor quality fabrics might be easy on the wallet, but it will wear easily, cause discomfort and chafing, affecting your mood and wellbeing. Good quality lighter fabrics –

WORKWEAR & PPE

especially those with good stretchability and those that offer UV protection – offer more ventilation and they dry quickly. While cheaper cotton-based fabrics absorb moisture and dry slowly, Snickers Workwear’s LiteWork collection is specially developed for warm days at work, offer good-looking, quality clothes made in lighter fabrics to ensure great ventilation and comfort. The LiteWork collection is specially developed for warmer weather. It features the revolutionary 37.5 technology and stretch fabrics for the best in mobility, moisture transport and ventilation. What’s more, advanced functionality and great fabric technology will ensure cool and dry working comfort, no matter what the weather conditions are. The upgraded lightweight and breathable 37.5 fabric technology in Snicker’s Workwear’s shirts and base-layer clothes are great for demanding tasks on site as well as high intensity gym work, circuit training, jogging, hill walking and mountain-biking. LINIAN designs and manufactures products that solve problems, speed up installations and generally make installers' jobs easier. The company’s research and development team are continually working on new solutions. So much so, that in 2020, LINIAN decided to set up LINIAN Labs, LINIAN’s sister business specialising in product development, as CEO Ian Arbuckle explains.

L

INIAN is a family business. We owned an independent electrical wholesale business in Glasgow for over 30 years, before launching our first product, the FireClip. It was the original single-component fire-rated fixing, with no need for screws, plugs or washers. It was invented by my dad, Wes Arbuckle, and created to solve the needs of one of his customers. Product development was originally Wes’s domain. However, in 2020 LINIAN launched the Earth Rod Pro - the first, but not the last, of my inventions inspired by my experience as an electrician and electrical engineer. At present, we have over 135 product lines and 50+ products in the LINIAN new product development pipeline! We don’t just create our own products. We also work with other manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors to create tailor-made products to fit their customers’ needs. All this product development comes under the umbrella of LINIAN LABS. Through LINIAN Labs, our team can develop a custom product specially for you and your customers. LINIAN Labs Projects Two recent projects produced through LINIAN LABS were the LINIAN Earth Rod Pro and LINIAN NanoClip. Earth Rod Pro – Following the success of LINIAN clips, our team of engineers and electricians identified earth rod installation as another key area which receives very little research and development exposure. We set about to fix a problem which others have taken for

granted. We designed and developed a simple and effective solution which bores through hard top layers and underground rock to achieve a secure Earth Rod connection. Simply attach the EARTH ROD PRO – DRIVER, to one end of a copper earth rod and attach the EARTH ROD PRO – BIT directly to the other end of the earth rod. Using an SDS Drill, the rod can then be rapidly installed directly into the ground in under two minutes. NanoClip – Launched in 2021, this range marked a pivotal moment in the LINIAN business story. Following the success of our products in the electro-technical industry, we received a wealth of enquires from the fibre broadband market. The NanoClip was created as a direct response to the fibre industry’s need for a safe, discreet and easy way to install fibre cables and other small diameter cables. How LINIAN Labs works We know that as wholesalers, you are in a unique position to understand the needs of installers. You can see first-hand if there is a gap in the market or a common problem that installers are facing. Perhaps you have a great idea for a product that would make installers' lives easier, but

you don’t know what to do next? If so, we would love to hear from you. After the problem has been identified the next stage is breaking it down into chunks to see how we can lend our expertise to the task. We undertake research to understand if there’s a current product or process to solve this task and see if it can be improved to make it easier for the installer. If there is no solution at all, we look at what would help the customer. We start testing the best ideas internally. Generally, this is via the prototype process. We try to keep as broad a base as possible, looking at different strategies and materials. Once we have proof of concept, we branch off and start looking at the manufacturing capacity, sourcing suppliers and materials and looking at the different stages that we need logistically to bring the product to market. Why work with LINIAN Labs? Since 2019, LINIAN has had a ‘UK First’ supply chain policy. All our products are manufactured here in the UK. We source our suppliers as locally as possible, ensuring great relationships with our partners. This policy helped us maintain our standard next day delivery service throughout the pandemic, Brexit and other logistical issues over recent years. It also gives us greater oversight and quality control over the people we work with.
