VIEWPOINT I DON’T NORMALLY POST THIS TYPE OF THING BUT....PROFESSIONALELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER SEPTEMBER 2022 5
See you next month
The point is we should all move away from posting our woes on social media – more often than not there is a troll who will just make you feel worse anyway.
Enough is enough I decided one lunchtime as I headed over to LinkedIn for some light relief but woah…what a mistake. I’m one of those people that ‘flick’ on LinkedIn. I stop on stories that might interest me or the ones with the big pictures of cool things….I’m not going to apologise I like big pictures of cool things!
There then follows a story designed to elicit sympathy and a few thousand comments delivering the sympathy. It’s like Facebook on a bad day when one random person posts ‘Feeling sad’ and all their mates reply with ‘you ok hun?’ Don’t get me wrong I do have sympathy for most of these people – I just don’t think that posting pictures of people crying on LinkedIn is the way forward. More importantly, when did we stop talking to each other? I would hate to think that someone who was close to me chose to post on LinkedIn rather than picking up the phone or dropping me a text. I would want people to think that I was approachable and that when life was generally heading in a southerly direction they could come to me for a chat.
Tracey Rushton-Thorpe Editor
A lot of people are struggling at the moment and don’t know where to turn. Let’s start talking again and make ourselves approachable so that those who are struggling have someone to talk to. The headlines are not going to get any better so we are going to have to weather this storm together – let’s do that properly and leave LinkedIn to do what it does best.
Anyway, the thing that caught my eye this time round was the number of people starting their posts with: “I don’t normally post this type of thing but”. Ok so if you don’t normally do it then why start now?

EDATA currently holds information in three categories: manufacturer master data, the core data needed to identify a product; digital assets such as images and data sheets; and technical attributes including dimensions, suitability and performance characteristics.
NEWS & VIEWS
SCOLMORE
Scolmore Group has announced the achievement of meeting the Gold Standard for EDATA and ETIM by the EDA - one of the few manufacturers to achieve this across multiple company brands, CLICK wiring accessories, OVIA lighting and Unicrimp electrical accessories ranges.
As the UK shifts towards an energy system that is more reliant on renewable generation, it will need more flexible capacity in order to respond to peaks and troughs in supply and demand, including when the sun isn’t shining, and the wind isn’t blowing. This flexibility is delivered through technology that can essentially be turned on or off, or dialled up or down.
According to Signify’s findings, switching to LED lighting in the professional lighting market could reduce CO2 emissions by 3.9 million tonnes in the UK&I region, the same amount of CO2 that 175 million trees could sequester in a year. Making the switch would also save 16.1 TWh of electricity, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 4.3 million households.
Stephen Rouatt, CEO, Signify UK&I, said: “Households in the UK are now in one of the most difficult situations as they see their energy bills rise by 54%, while businesses continue to struggle as well. We understand the urgency created by the energy crisis to help families and businesses under pressure. Switching to energy-efficient LED lighting guarantees quick wins in saving money on energy bills and responding to the urgent action needed to tackle the climate crisis.”

Signify supports faster switch to LED lighting myenergi is inviting owners of its zappi electric vehicle (EV) charger to take part in one of the country’s largest ever energy flexibility trials.
EV drivers with zappi chargers are being invited to sign up for this major new trial, which aims to provide a greater understanding of how demand side flexibility, through demand side response services, will work in practice, including what the incentives for customers might be in the Driversfuture.taking part will allow myenergi to remotely make small adjustments to how and when they charge, with the aim of reducing stress on the electricity grid and maximising the potential for renewable generation. The beta trial is the next step in enabling myenergi to eventually offer demand side response services directly to customers, following successful smaller scale technology demonstration trials by the company. Dr Chris Horne, Chief Technology Officer of myenergi, said: “Our customers are already invested in the future of energy. While flexibility in today’s energy system is provided mostly by fossil fuel generation, customers joining our trial will help us to understand their role in cumulatively helping to replace these high emitters with smarter, cleaner capacity – a crucial step on the UK’s journey to net zero.”
With the recent change in price cap, millions of households have been pushed into fuel poverty and several businesses are now facing added volatility due to its impact. In light of this, Signify advocates an accelerated transition to energy-efficient connected LED lighting to help households and businesses while positively impacting the UK’s Race to Zero. This comes more than a decade after Signify’s call to phase out the incandescent light bulb worldwide.

Installers split on heat pumps
Baxi’s research with installers found that nearly a third – equivalent to about 37,000 of the more than 130,000 of the UK’s heating engineers – are prepared to embrace heat pumps in the near future. By contrast, around 30% say they are extremely unlikely to install heat pumps.
Amongst the main findings in the report “Heating Installers: Taking the Leap to a Low Carbon Future” are that the government and the industry will need to address the important issue of training costs, ensuring there is enough demand from customers and reducing paperwork.
The government is targeting 600,000 heat pump installations every year by 2028. That is ten times the current market and represents a transformation from early adoption to a mass market proposition. It would require an army of low carbon heating installers to be assisting homeowners and encouraging to make the change.

The transition to low carbon heating is at finely balanced tipping point with installers split on whether they will be installing heat pumps in their customers’ homes. That’s the main finding of a new report from heat solutions provider Baxi which assesses what would encourage installers to take the leap to low carbon sources of heat.
REPORT FINDS HEATING INSTALLERS SPLIT ON WHETHER TO BEGIN FITTING HEAT PUMPS NEWS & VIEWS
Karen Boswell, Managing Director of Baxi UK & Ireland, said: “Installers will play an important role as we decarbonise the nation’s heating and it will be vital that the government and industry support them with the right information, incentives and training.”

In 2020, the Office for National Statistics report that an estimated 2.3 million adults aged 16 to 74 in England and Wales experienced abuse in their relationship with a partner. 26% of the instances reported to police were committed against men. Yet only 4.4% of victims end up being supported by local services, with 11% of male victims and 7.2% of women victims saying they’ve considered suicide as a result.
O ur entire life is formed of relationships so it’s no surprise they can hugely impact our mental and physical health. A relationship between two people who don’t support each other is termed a ‘toxic relationship’ and can occur with a partner, family member, friend or colleague. Toxic relationships can be hugely damaging.
Abuse A few years ago, Steve was in a relationship with an abusive woman who struggled with alcohol addiction. He stayed with her longer than he should have done simply because he insisted she had 'a lovely side' that he believed in. After years of abuse, Steve finally made the decision to leave his partner. He got a new flat and eventually formed a new healthy relationship. But his ex-girlfriend refused to let Steve be happy. She couldn't allow him to move on with his new partner, and over a series of months, she did everything in her power to break them up, loitering around his new flat and shouting death threats through his letterbox. On one of these occasions, she physically assaulted both Steve and his partner. The police were called and an injunction was taken out to protect them both. Although this stopped the abuse, the months of trauma had become too much for Steve’s new partner and she ended the relationship. Up until this point, Steve had been motivated at work, active at the gym, and generally had a positive outlook on life. But the trauma caused by his ex-girlfriend left him struggling to get out of bed and resulted in him being signed off work and feeling on the verge of a mental breakdown. He started medication prescribed by his GP but he was placed on the end of a long waiting list to access any form of counselling. His manager visited him at home and advised him to seek support, so Steve contacted the EIC through the helpline. He spoke with a caseworker on the phone and relayed the traumatic events of the last few years. The EIC sourced a therapist just days after the first contact. After only one session with this therapist, Steve has said he is starting to feel better and more positive about the future. The help Steve was able to access is due to the support of the EIC and the powerLottery. It means he is getting the support he needs to access therapy, put the abusive relationship behind him and start the process of moving on with his life. Without powerLottery, the EIC would not be able to offer this support to people like Steve. That’s why we need you to become a powerLottery player to help EIC to continue supporting our industry members.

“ We identified there was a demand for better data quality and organisation of product data.”
16 SEPTEMBER 2022 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
A. NG15 was established by Managing Director Shaun Cranstone in 2001. Originally a design and marketing agency, we have a broad knowledge of design and branding under our belts, along with expert knowledge of catalogue design, print management, eCommerce, and website design. Years of working with catalogue data, has led us to become leading experts in Product Information Management (PIM) and digital communication.Havingused a variety of third-party content management software solutions to manage our customers’ electrical catalogues, we identified that there was a demand for better data quality and organisation of product data across the entire construction supply chain. We have since developed our own multi-channel PIM solution e-Pim, specifically for use within the electrical and construction industry. We launched this commercially just over four years ago, our goal being to help companies in this sector simplify data management, digital assets, and workflow processes. We are now the leading providers of Product Information Management to the construction industry. We also specialise in and support many of our customers with digital catalogue, catalogue publications, eCommerce (click & collect), database services and software development, multilanguage translations (PIM), and graphic design services.
Q What is e-Pim and how does it work?
FACE TO FACE FACE TO FACE NG15
A. e-Pim is a product information management solution. It provides a centralised location for storing product data and digital assets, all via a single platform. It allows you to manage, enrich and distribute product information to all your sales and eCommerce channels. It has been specifically developed for use within the electrical and construction industry and can automate up to 80% of manual tasks. It is a cloud-based technology, and simple to use. e-Pim provides the user with a comprehensive set of intuitive tools that help to dramatically improve product data quality. Through e-Pim, manufacturers and distributors can stay in touch with the everconnected customer, deliver seamless, consistent, and accurate product information to all marketing channels. The user can enrich data, share product data, market, and sell products through various distribution channels such as, eCommerce websites (B2B and B2C), print and catalogue publications, digital interactive catalogues, electronic data feeds, other trading partners and mobile applications. Most importantly, e-Pim provides the power required to rapidly create and deliver compelling product experiences, helping to drive customer engagement, reach more markets, improve sales conversion rates, and quickly take advantage of new sales channels.
Q How was NG15 formed and what services does the company offer?
This month PEW hears from Suzanne Adgar, Director at NG15, about the importance of embracing digitalisation and ‘digitally connecting’ the manufacturer and wholesaler.

Q What is NG15’s overriding aim over the next couple of years?
Together, Trimble Luckins and NG15 have proven that the process is robust and scalable, and our next generation data services are ready to bring value to all parties across the supply chain. Trimble recognise the value this offer brings to the industry and have invested £500,000 making this a competitive, “affordable for all” model which will drive sales, reduce workload, and increase accuracy and data traceability for all.
A. Trimble Luckins have for over 50 years been the trusted UK building services number one source of product and pricing information. In response to the changing requirements of the industry, they have been expanding the data they hold to include a more enriched experience. This new data set offers attributes, images, videos and documentation in a variety of standard and bespoke outputs to suit a given customer’s needs. Werealised that there wasacommon vision for the improvement and delivery of quality, industry product data. We initially joined together to provide a series of ongoing manufacturer and wholesaler educational workshops, covering digitalisation. However, with an everincreasing use of our e-Pim solution by manufacturers, we realised that by working more closely together, we could seamlessly deliver product content across every digital channel throughasingle, integrated platform. We launched our joint Product Content Syndication model for manufacturers and wholesalers in April 2022. Through e-Pim, you can control the release of product information more effectively and quickly reach the intended audience. This puts the ‘manufacturer in control’ of the release process, providing a ‘real time’ view of data for customers (both wholesalers and contractors). Through our syndication model, any changes you make to your products are seamlessly made available to the market, without the need for you to prepare and deliver data files. e-Pim gives wholesalers the opportunity to utilise this enriched product data in all sales channels. Websites, webstores, digital catalogues, digital sales platforms such as Amazon can all be driven through e-Pim.
Q When it comes to product data, is there a need for the industry to adopt a more collaborative, joined up A.approach?
TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT NG15 SERVICES VISIT: PROFESSIONALWWW.RDR.LINK/WAC005ELECTRICIANSWHOLESALER Manufacturers and wholesalers must take much greater responsibility for the traceability and the quality of informationproducttheyprovide.”
Disconnected industry data pools are not the answer. The wholesaler cannot guarantee that content they are downloading is one hundred per cent accurate, because it is not possible for the manufacturer to continually update or manage the data quality. The manufacturer and the wholesaler need to be ‘digitally connected’. It is vital that the industry embraces Product Data Syndication as the delivery solution for the continuous flow of the most up-todate, accurate and enriched product information. This will increase the speed of data sharing with the wholesaler, strengthen data accountability and build trust. It will also support and increase transparency of product data. However, it is not simply a question of adopting new or better technology alone, the industry requires a fundamental shift in culture, skills, leadership, processes, collaboration, and investment planning. Manufacturers need to lead with confidence and move away from archaic systems.
Q How did the NG15 partnership with Trimble Luckins come about?
It is very important for the industry to adopt a more collaborative approach and we need to work ‘smarter together’, to solve the problem of inaccurate product delivery across the supply chain. With legislation and traceability on the horizon, new digital business models based on greater accountability, compliance, agility, and a relentless focus on improving the customer experience, will be essential.
Q How does the electrical sector benefit from digitalisation?
A. Our goal over the next three years is to deliver ‘next generation data services’ that will make it easier for the manufacturers, wholesalers and contractors to work together and have access to better connected data. We will continue to help manufacturers improve the structure and quality of their data. We will also continue to support the buying groups and their wholesalers so they can consume syndicated data and open-up new sales channels to quickly bring new products to market.
SEPTEMBER 2022 17 “
A. The construction industry is still slow to change and to adopt interoperable data. In the past, it might have been acceptable to manage product data using spreadsheets, and to store images in various locations across a business. It might also have been acceptable to ‘manually update’ a company website, using copy and paste or other entirely unconnected methods. This is no longer the case, and these methods no longer meet the needs and standards required by the industry and consumers. With the increasing demand for high quality product information across the entire supply chain, manufacturers and wholesalers must take much greater responsibility for the traceability and the quality of product information they provide. Embracing digitalisation and investing in technologies that improve the management and delivery of product information can bring much greater opportunity and benefit. Electrical manufacturers and wholesalers will typically benefit by increased efficiency, better productivity, lower operational costs, improved customer experience, higher agility, better workflow, improved communication, increased transparency, improved competitive advantage, and faster decision making.

Equipped with his extensive knowledge and engagement with key stakeholders in the EV charging industry, Paul began to design and build a new EV charger. The aim was to create a solution designed by installers, for installers, ensuring the installation process and technical support were the best in class.
S yncEV’s roots date back to 2016, when founders, Ben Coombes and Paul Delahey were installing EV chargers as part of a government scheme, supporting homeowners in installing electric vehicle charge points in their homes. This scheme allowed installers to claim a £1,000 grant for each installation, with SyncEV being the 247th company to register for the scheme: with the list since growing to over 8,000 installers.
After a number of prototypes and several design changes, the company’s EV charging system was launched to market in December 2019. The product was one of the smallest EV chargers available and included smart capability through a mobile app. Furthermore, it was backed up with market-leading technical support for both the installer and end-user. Bringing all these factors together undoubtedly contributed to the strong demand for EV charging solutions.
Following the recent acquisition of SyncEV by Luceco Group, Ben Coombes, EVCP Installation Director at Luceco Group and one of the founders of Sync EV, discusses how SyncEV started and future plans for the brand.
Acquisition SyncEV’s potential was clear to see, leading to the acquisition of the company by Luceco Group in March 2022. Luceco Group has a large market share of UK residential electrical products. Replicating this share within the rapidly growing residential EV charging category, as well as the opportunity to explore new sales channels in both the UK and overseas, will provide huge growth potential for the group. The SyncEV business will be integrated into Luceco Group’s sales and distribution operations based in Telford. The management team will remain heavily involved in the business and future product
Even with a reduction in this government grant, the demand for these systems continued to grow. Through the many installations of common brands available at the time, the small SyncEV team developed a very detailed understanding of EV chargers. It soon became apparent that there was much room for improvement with the existing solutions available on the market. Each charger had its drawbacks, and many were difficult to install, creating issues for installers and homeowners alike.

SPECIAL REPORT development. Now that Luceco Group has taken control of the business, the SyncEV team hopes to guide and lead the Luceco Group to even more success.
The range The SyncEV by BG Electrical range of 7.4kw residential and commercial EV chargers was launched to the market in June. This comprehensive range includes five models in total – three socket and two tethered – available in a combination of WiFi, WiFi/GSM, and WiFi/GSM and RFID options. These all offer their own benefits; the WiFi/GSM option allows installation anywhere, while the RFID provides the facility to set up contactless payment options in commercial environments. The range will charge any electric or hybrid vehicle.
Other key benefits include the solution’s integrated open PEN conductor protection. This removes the need to install earth rods, which in turn reduces the complexity of the installation, saving time. Integrated RCD and PEN protection is included in the unit to ensure safe installation and use. Overall, the design and easy installation features mean fitting the charger typically takes just two hours. Adding extra peace of mind, the chargers are all backed up by marketleading, UK-based technical and sales support. Furthermore, products are supplied with a 3-year warranty. With the joining of these two companies, the future for EV charging looks brighter than ever. Bringing together SyncEV’s product and technical expertise, with the backing of a large manufacturer in the electrical market, will provide a market-leading offer and additional choice for EV
The new models retain the smart functionality SyncEV is known for and are controlled through the SyncEV BG app. In addition, the charger includes a load management kit to allow for dynamic charging, ensuring the home electrical system is not overloaded, and car charging is reduced until other devices are turned off.
SyncEV will be positioned under the BG Electrical brand and will complement key electrical products within the BG Electrical family. For the contractor, this means the acquisition will enable them to choose even more solutions from a brand they know, trust and are confident in installing.

Master station There are two Beacon Master Station options available – a push button simple user interface and includes status and fault monitoring. In emergency use
The Beacon ‘Master Stations’ are the central point of the system, which combines Fire Telephone Handsets, Disabled Refuge Outstations and Emergency Alarms to form one fully integrated system.
the Master Station identifies the location of the Outstation that has been activated, with clear duplex audio to assist an evacuation process.
PEW hears from ESP on some of the disabled refuge products and solutions being offered.
SAFE
At the core of the range is the Emergency CommunicationsVoiceSystem (EVCS) –this is the term used to describe a fixed, monitored and maintained, bidirectional, full duplex voice communication system to assist the orderly evacuation of disabled or mobility impaired people and enhance firefighters’ communication during emergencies.
Disabled refuge outstations Disabled Refuge Outstations, known as ‘Type B’, provide a fixed point of communication in a building for users who require evacuation or assistance. Situated in refuge areas usually found in protected stairwells, the Outstation provides duplex audio to the Master Station, which is located in the building’s control room, or at the access points for the fire service.
As a leading supplier of security and fire protection solutions to the professional electrical market, ESP has been taking on an increasing number of larger, specification type projects and has identified an opportunity to expand its product portfolio to offer a comprehensive disabled refuge range that meets the requirements of BS 9999:2017 and Building Regulations Approved Document B. Marketed under the name Beacon, the new range comprises a variety of products that are specifically designed to assist emergency evacuation situations in a wide range of buildings and venues – with the aim of assisting people with limited mobility to safely exit the building. By adding this new category of products to its portfolio, ESP is providing contractors with access to yet another service that can be incorporated into the overall project design scheme. If a risk assessment requires the provision of a disabled refuge system on a project, ESP can offer the reassurance of a range of products and systems that meet with all the relevant standards.
The Master Station is complete with backup battery function (battery to be supplied separately) that offers 24hr standby in event of mains power failure, plus three hours of voice communication supply in the event of an emergency situation.
The Beacon stainless steel ‘Type B’ Outstation offers handsfree operation, a compact design suitable for mounting on a double gang box and features clear LED status visibility. An ingress protected version is also available for external use.
A ccording to current Building Regulations, it is a requirement that all new, nondomestic buildings with more than one level provide ‘refuge’ areas –relatively safe places where people who cannot easily use fire escapes and evacuation lifts can congregate and summon assistance. Disabled refuge systems are called for in BS9999: 2017code of practice for fire safety in the design, management, and use of buildings – as well as Building Regulations Approved Document B (Fire Safety) Volume 2: Buildings other than dwelling houses.

The options include call button, call plate and cancel plate. 4-Zone controller
ESP’s existing assistance alarm kit will be rebranded to Beacon. The 3-piece kit operates fully independently with no master station or controller required.
The 4-zone controller removes the need for a Master Station, supporting up to four separate Assist Call Kits. The controller provides clear zone identification and acknowledgement feature.
ESP’s new Beacon disabled refuge and assistance alarm range will be supported by a dedicated, UK based technical team, and will offer contractors and specifiers access to a free design service, compliant with the latest BS5839-9:2021 regulations.
For applications that require the Assist Call Kit but have no need for a disabled refuge or fire telephone integration, a 4-zone controller will be made available for use with both the Toilet Kit and Bedroom Kit.
ESP has produced a comprehensive brochure covering the whole of the Beacon range, along with examples of how the components of the system integrate. The brochure can be downloaded from the ESP website.

Fire telephone handsets Fire Telephone Handsets, known as ‘Type A’ Outstations, are for use by the fire and rescue service during an evacuation, allowing the officer at the fire control centre to communicate with other officers to control the evacuation. The ‘Type A’ Outstation activates a call to the Master Station to assist the fire and rescue service. They provide a central point of communication in the event of an emergency and provide backup to the firefighter’s radio systems which can fail to operate during a fire in many tall buildings due to the large amounts of steel found in them. An ingress protected version is also available for external use.

The Other House, South Kensington The Portfolio Club has refurbished the former Harrington Hall Hotel, which has been empty for six years, and brought it back into use under the new brand name - The Other House, which is located close to Hyde Park and Knightsbridge and on the doorstep of some of London’s most iconic cultural landmarks. Taking a strong stand on environmental responsibility, The Other House was designed to promote physical and mental wellbeing. Built sustainably, they used natural products wherever possible. With tree-filled courtyards and green roofs, they created a sanctuary in the heart of the city to relax and restore. Selectric collaborated with the designers and contractors and created a bespoke antique brass screwless plate for this project. Selectric also developed some custom toggle switches exact to the client’s requirements whilst complementing the traditional style of the refurbishment, showcasing the very best in British craftsmanship and awardwinning design. Selectric reports on some prestigious projects which feature the 5M-PLUS – the company’s first screwless plate design.
T
A recent overhaul to the 5M-PLUS packaging has resulted in less plastic waste to reduce carbon emissions and help protect the environment. Selectric made a resolution to reduce the total amount of plastic used in the manufacturing process, and because of this the products now come in recyclable bags, with the heavier products such as two-gang USB sockets and shaver units being presented in biodegradable cardboard inner boxes.
The range has been specifically selected for use in many building projects, some of which are highlighted here.
he 5M-PLUS range is Selectric’s first screwless plate design. Minimal and elegant, the range consists of a clip on front plate which covers the base of each product, metal rockers and LED neons. Each accessory has a metal screwless plate which easily clips on once the product has been successfully wired up. This means the front plate can be applied after decorating, avoiding any paint mishaps, and resulting in a neat and clean finish. The products feature integral gaskets to prevent moisture transferring from the wall to the product. This ensures your plate remains untarnished. It is incredibly easy to change the faceplate whenever you might decide, either as a direct replacement or for a different interior style should you choose to redecorate, all possible without the need for any special tools or expert electrical knowledge.

The neons within the range are all LED for improved energy efficiency and have a sleek, streamlined aperture. Unlike traditional neons which take a few seconds to warm up, the LED neons reach full brightness as soon as the power source is switched on. The lifespan of the neon is not affected by the number of times you flick the switch.
The 5M-PLUS products fit all standard metal back boxes and dry lining boxes, allowing a simple exchange for any products you may already have installed.
Selectric’s GRID360 range is also worth a mention. With modular plates and modules available that correspond with all 5M-PLUS finishes, it makes it incredibly easy to create any arrangement of personalised products. There are over 300 items totalling thousands of combinations possible to suit every need. Plates are available with up to 12 apertures and there is no need for a yoke system; modules screw directly into the back of the plates. Bespoke lasering is available on request which is ideal for multiple switch combinations.
Many of the accessories in the range are CE and UKCA approved and comply with the very latest standards. There is a five year plate guarantee across the range for ultimate peace of mind.

Draper’s recently released XP1000 range of VDE hand tools has a clever way of addressing this industry issue. To make the task of performing a visual check easier for busy electricians, all of Draper’s XP1000 screwdrivers feature a dual-layer “insulation warning” blade sheath to indicate wear and VDE protection status. The two layers are different colours; if the under layer is visible, the tool may not be safe to use. The feature was designed to help give total peace of mind on the job and is proving popular with a number of electricians.
TOOLS
The hand tools team at Draper Tools explain why stocking VDE tools is a safe move.
STAY PROTECTED
E veryone knows electricians need VDE tools for protection on the job, but not everyone seems to know the insulation should be regularly checked. In fact, according to a study by Draper Tools, only 17% of the UK’s electricians* say they regularly check the insulation on their VDE tools. Industry guidance recommends electricians perform a visual inspection of an insulated tool each time they plan to use it. This is because any visible cracks, nicks, cuts or other damage to the outer layer of the insulated tool could compromise safety. It’s the younger generation of electricians who are most guilty of being a little lax with the suggested visual inspections – just 5% of the 18 to 24-yearolds in the Draper study regularly check their insulation. But with knowledge and experience comes a greater concern for safety, and the number of electricians who do regular checks does increase with age.
Despite the room for improvement on the number of electricians checking their VDE insulation, there is an overall recognition of the importance of VDE tools in the industry. Just over one in 10 of the nation’s electricians said that good quality VDE tools were a vital investment. In fact, 22% love adding to their tool collection, and more than a third of electricians say that getting to use tools every day is the best part of the job. What makes VDE tools so tough? So what goes into the testing for VDE certification to ensure these tools are tough and a vital investment for electricians?
VDE stands for Verband der Elektrotec und Informationstechnik – a nationally and internationally accredited independent institution for the testing and certification of electric equipment, components and systems. It tests products for quality, health, environmental protection, safety and social responsibility standards in nearly every market in the world. Stringent testing is applied before VDE certification is gained. In the case of the VDE tools in Draper’s XP1000 range, this includes a voltage piece test, where the tools are submerged in water and

Selling safety It just goes to show that a good selection of VDE-certified hand tools will always be a key part of a wholesaler’s offering. However, they are just one of the safetyfocused tools for electricians. Other important items to stock up on include PPE such as gloves and boots. A great range of tools and essentials for electricians, from VDE screwdrivers and pliers to a Wi-Fi endoscope, is available from Draper Tools.
By contrast, standard pliers and screwdrivers are likely to have simple plastic or nylon handles, which obviously won’t insulate an electrician against contact with a high-voltage electrical line. High voltage can travel along a tool’s steel core and quickly jump to the user through a plastic or nylon handle. Put simply: without properly insulated tools to hand, electricians could be risking serious injury, liability or even death.

TOOLS electrified to test for sparks. VDE tools also undergo a combustion test where they are exposed to a flame and a pressure test which sees a load applied at a high temperature. There’s a thorough adhesion test to pass too and a cold shock test where the tools are cooled down to -25°C to test the durability of the insulation material.

Brinley Buckley-Roberts, Brand Manager at Carl Kammerling International, the home of C.K Tools, discusses why premium hand tools are worth the investment – both for end-users and wholesalers.
n the electrical trade, reputation is an important commodity. Whether you’re an electrician or wholesaler, reputation can be the difference in securing the next job or securing the repeat purchase. It also plays a vital role in one of the most integral parts of any job –the choice of tools. Tool choice is a careful consideration for any electrician and wholesalers should always be cognisant of this; an inadequate tool could affect safety, it could compromise the finish, or it could lead to downtime and an un-forecasted replacement purchase. And if the tool choice was a recommendation at the wholesaler’s service desk then they fall short on the basic requirement of any transaction – trust. While there will always be the industry need to offer ‘good, better, best’ options, stocking and recommending premium hand tools can really make a difference in both the short and long-term for wholesalers.

The premium factor
TOOLS PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER SEPTEMBER2022 29
There are several elements that contribute to the ‘premium’ factor: the R&D process; the source of the materials; the engineering and manufacturing procedures; to the quality control and accreditation. Each element undergoes a constant review as new materials, manufacturing techniques, or industry requirements are uncovered, with the effectiveness, durability and safety of the products always top of mind. Research and development can mean many things but for C.K Tools this means listening intently to what the industry is asking for. C.K utilises a panel of professionals to not only find solutions to problems, but to also find the existing product evolutions that will make the job that much more efficient. From there, its NPD team go into design and consider the aesthetics, the ergonomics, and of course the materials. There’s no product without a clear rationale; each one is meticulously planned, CAD designed, prototyped and tested. Material choice is of great importance to C.K Tools and has contributed considerably to a reputation built over more than 200 years. In the most part C.K Tools procure steel from and manufacture products in Germany, in particular the North Rhine, which is world-renowned for its steel production. The region’s steel has varying levels and mixes of chromium, which has excellent corrosion resistance, vanadium, “ Stocking recommendingand premium hand tools can really make a difference in both the short and long-term for wholesalers.”
I
But what does premium really mean? What defines a premium hand tool?

Other engineering techniques are then used to ensure our products live up to the premium tag. Induction hardening is a process we use to ensure that parts of products – such as the jaws on pliers – are hardened to withstand heavy usage and ensure long-term performance. It involves electromagnetically heating up the steel and then rapidly cooling it to maintain the desired properties.
Not content with its premium grade steel, the North Rhine is also known as the industrial heartland for tool manufacturing. The steel mills, chemical and water treatment businesses, and manufacturing plants all reside there and have developed great ways of collaborating over the years to ensure that the potential of the raw material is not lost through the processing and engineering stages.
Precision engineering C.K Tools has been working with its current manufacturing partners since 1904 and there’s a reason for it; In today’s market it is very rare that products are manufactured tothe very peak of excellence but with German engineering practices that’s a given. Precision engineering requires a number of inputs and with hand tool manufacturing that starts with the quality of the die – the item used to stamp the shape of the tool in the steel. Utilising a mixture of CAD and CNC, dies can be cut to within a tolerance the equivalent of a human hair, delivering a near perfect product with every stamp.
TOOLS which works as a deoxidiser and reduces wear, and molybdenum, which when combined with chromium gives greater strength and impact resistance.

Understanding requirements
WWW.RDR.LINK/WAC011 30 SEPTEMBER2022 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
A premium product isn’t just premium because a brand says it is; when other bodies endorse a product you know it sits above the rest. Across certain lines, C.K Tools’ products are VDE certified, which is the highest form of independent safety testing in the electrical trade, while the majority achieve GS (Gepruefte Sicherheit) and DIN (Deutsche Institut) accreditation, which are German standards that indicate performance and quality. Premium tool brands know what matter; they understand their customers; they understand the requirements of each and every job; and they are unwavering in their pursuit of precision engineering the perfect product to sell and to use. So, as you can see, there’s a reason why German engineered products come with a premium, but rest assured, they’ll be the best orders you’ll place and the best recommendations you’ll make to your customers.
The precision engineering techniques don’t stop at the steel; hand tools have to be inherently comfortable and safe to handle. To ensure this, every single screwdriver handle is injection moulded directly to the steel, giving the ultimate torsion-proof bond for increased reliability, durability, control and comfort.

Champion the sustainable option Let’s face it, in every facet of the construction sector – we’re all risk adverse. Sticking with what you know, and trust is something we’re all guilty of, but it’s important to highlight when a simple change can bring a wealth of benefits.
56 SEPTEMBER2022 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
In the world of cable management products, it’s embodied carbon where we can make a positive difference. Put simply, recycling and reusing plastic requires far less energy (and therefore less embodied carbon) than primary plastic production. This is a real advantage for the end client who wants to lower the environmental impact of their building.
Jon Chamberlain, Managing Director at Marshall-Tufflex, thinks it’s good to talk. Here, he explains why we should be talking about cable management products made from recycled materials, and why they are a game changer when it comes to reducing environmental impact.
N obody needs to be told the planet is in trouble. The majority of us are more mindful of this in our everyday lives, looking at the positive steps we can take to be just that little bit more environmentally friendly. The same should be said when it comes to approaching our work – particularly when working in construction. Our sector is a major contributor to both carbon emissions and waste - but there are seemingly small changes that really can make a big difference. Be aware – the products are there Electrical wholesalers are in an ideal position to highlight commonly purchased products where a more sustainable choice can be made. Cable management systems are one such example because products are available that have been manufactured using recycled content.
At Marshall-Tufflex, we have been using reclaimed PVC-U from windows to help manufacture our products for over 25 years. In fact, in 2020, we’re incredibly proud that this figure was an average of 74% across our PVC-U product range - and that our white conduit and white mini and maxi trunking lengths were manufactured using 100% recycled material. Our aim is to reach 80% recycled content across all of our PVC-U manufactured portfolio by the end of this year. Why all the fuss? Well to put it into context – what we’re doing right now at Marshall-Tufflex is saving the equivalent in weight of 300 double decker buses going to landfill each year. This really is a huge achievement. The construction sector as a whole is the biggest contributor to UK waste – creating 120 million tonnes per year. So, the more we can avoid sending to landfill – the better.
The issue of waste is also closely linked to carbon emissions, which is a complex issue. For construction projects, the two key areas are embodied carbon (the amount of CO2 arising from the manufacturing, transportation, installation, maintenance and disposal of building materials) and operational carbon (the on-going emissions associated with the day-to-day use of the building).

This is where we need electrical wholesalers to fly the flag. Firstly, to help highlight that the products are there. Secondly, we know that hesitations around product quality and potentially higher product costs have meant some electricians are reluctant to make the switch to products made from recycled content. However, the reality is that because our recycled material is waste PVC-U from windows – it is therefore already high quality, robust and designed to withstand external elements. So actually, the quality of the product is improved. Of course, as with any product it’s important to choose solutions from a reputable manufacturer. Thanks to our long heritage in extruding PVC and injection moulding techniques, we offer superior products with recycled content that retain their high quality and outstanding finish. Finally, the cost of cable management products made with recycled content is usually in line with those that are made without – meaning it is a simple and cost neutral switch.
So, whether it’s selecting conduits, perimeter trunking, channels, cable trays or accessories, wholesalers can help electricians to make a truly informed choice and one that ultimately helps the FORplanet.MORE INFORMATION ON SUSTAINABILITYMARSHALL-TUFFLEX’SAND2028 VISION VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/WAC042
Our sustainability commitment At Marshall-Tufflex we truly believe we can make a difference. That’s why we continue to maximise the recycled content of our products to lower carbon emissions and divert waste from landfill. We believe that there should be a requirement on specifications for PVC-U systems to be manufactured from a minimum of 50% recycled material. Eventually, by 2028 we’d like PVC-U cable management products manufactured from recycled content to be the accepted industry norm and main contractors driving this through the supply chain.
PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER SEPTEMBER2022 57
But we’re not there yet and we need help getting there. We want to work side by side with wholesalers ensuring counter teams are equipped with the knowledge that can support customers to make an informed decision. By switching to a cable management product made with recycled content – and one that doesn’t impact quality or cost – we can lower environmental impact through our day-to- day product choices.
“ We believe that there should be a requirement on specifications for PVC-U systems to be manufactured from a minimum of 50% recycled material.”
