BREAKING POINT VERSUS TAKING A BREAK

T

he opportunity to watch the Olympics, albeit a year late and at very odd times of the day, has been a real treat. I personally am very much in awe of the achievements of Team GB – every single one of them regardless of whether they achieved a gold medal or no medal. They set their mind to something, they trained hard against all the odds and to be fair to every one of them they were high achievers just by making it to Tokyo and turning up on the start line.

The downside of the Olympics is the emergence of the ‘armchair critics’. You know the ones…. @dave1234 (name changed to protect the not-so-innocent) who could absolutely knock out a world record time for literally any of the track events and feels it necessary to comment on where our Olympic athletes failed, or the keyboard warriors over on Twitter who target the athletes to mock them and berate them for their ‘failings’.

Quite simply it’s not on. One thing which the Olympics brought into sharp focus was the issue of mental health – who could forget Simone Biles, a top US gymnast who pulled out of her competition saying: “I have to focus on my mental health”. Good for her, because you cannot underestimate the challenges which each of these athletes face and the impact just being in Tokyo had on their mental health. But the issue of mental health awareness is not just one which Olympic athletes face – it is something we all need to be aware of.

The last year has been tough and many people have struggled with their mental health.

But how many people have reached out for help and how many feel ashamed to talk about it for fear of being berated by the ‘keyboard warriors’ or the people in their life who are the equivalent of @dave1234 and who think mental health problems are for ‘wimps’.

Mental Health problems are NOT for wimps and it is something we all need to talk about. Do you remember that BT advert where Bob Hoskins said: “It’s good to talk”? It may be 20 years old (it really is!) but the sentiment is the same. Do not, I repeat, do not fear reprisals from people like @dave1234 – he’s a brave old boy over on Twitter but when he isn’t poised over his keyboard ready for the next attack on an innocent person I’m sure he’s actually a very quiet chap who wouldn’t say boo to a goose.

Too many people are reaching breaking point without reaching out for help. It might be you; it might be a colleague, friend or family member. It doesn’t matter who it is, what matters is what we do about it, collectively, as a team. This month we have started a new feature with the Electrical Industries Charity so head over to page 21 to see what they have to say and more importantly how they can help people in our industry.

Let’s also think what we can do. We are a team, every single one of us working in the electrical industry, so let’s work together, support each other and most of all let’s make it ok to talk about mental health.

NEWS & VIEWS Survey reveals key factors in purchasing decisions

READER SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY AND REPUTATION A recent reader survey carried out by Professional Electricians Wholesaler has revealed that product quality and brand reputation still have the greatest influence on purchasing decisions amongst wholesalers.

During a turbulent 18 months, the 2021 survey demonstrated just how important these two factors remain with 92% of survey respondents selecting quality as a key issue in choosing which products to stock and 86% citing brand reputation as a defining factor. The survey results also highlighted the full scope of products and

systems now available to electricians as the market continues to expand and diversify year on year. The increased demand for smart home equipment is reflected in the survey results with 86% saying they now sell at least one smart home product, whilst 72% now sell EV charging equipment and 48% stock products or systems relating to the renewables market.

Elsewhere in the survey, respondents crowned Professional Electricians Wholesaler as their number one read with 78% ranking it as their favourite

wholesale title and an impressive 66% claimed to have stocked products after seeing them in the magazine.

JTL REACCREDITED TO MATRIX STANDARD JTL has been reaccredited to the matrix Standard, demonstrating the high quality of information, advice, and/or guidance provided to support its applicants and apprentices in their choice of career, learning, work and life goals.

The matrix Standard is the international quality standard for organisations that deliver information,

advice and/or guidance (IAG), either as their sole purpose or as part of their service offering.

Commenting on the award, David Consterdine, Head of Quality Assurance and Audit, said: “JTL prides itself on the quality of the service it provides and this external recognition further demonstrates and endorses this. Accredited to the standard since 2009, this is another great

result for JTL. Since the last assessment in 2018, JTL has continued to develop its Information, Advice and Guidance service. JTL has introduced the new Additional Learning Support (ALS) team which assesses and provides support for learners with a range of needs, as well as creating a new team of Apprentice Support Officers (ASOs).”

VENT-A XIA TAKES ACTION TO IMPROVE SUSTAINABILITY Vent-Axia has taken measurable actions to deliver healthy indoor air sustainably.

With the construction industry working hard to meet Net-Zero targets by 2050 it is important the whole supply chain works together to reduce carbon emissions which means specifiers working with suppliers that are reducing their own carbon footprint.

Vent-Axia has committed to helping make sustainable attainable for its customers by taking action to reduce its environmental impact as part of a group wide initiative. These actions have resulted

in significant improvements to help the company meet its environmental goals including eliminating plastic blister packs and single use poly bags from its supply

chain; recycling 180 tonnes of cardboard; using recycled materials from 63,000 old fridges and designing efficiency and modularity into its products to lower energy usage and reduce landfill waste.

“Sustainability is about finding solutions. From energy usage and climate change to air quality and future lifestyles, these are the areas where we can have the biggest positive impacts. We’re focussing on how we can improve lives through the impact of our products, our impact on the planet and our impact on our people”, said Lena Hebestreit, Marketing Manager at Vent-Axia.

BEAMA SUPPORTS COMMITMENT ON CLIMATE ACTION UK energy sector trade bodies have come together to present a united voice to Government and build back greener ahead of COP26.

Collaboration across the industry is essential if the UK is to meet its Net Zero target, and the commitment, signed by leading UK trade associations, is representative of a powerful voice coming from the energy industry.

The UK is already leading the way in areas of technology, innovation and R&D but the opportunity for scaling up low carbon industries in the UK is huge, and if delivered effectively will provide jobs and economic growth for regions across

the country.

BEAMA is working directly with its community of members across the energy sector supply chain to address market deployment for the range of technologies needed, including zero carbon heating and storage products and hardware for the electricity grid. BEAMA is also looking forward to the much-anticipated Heat and Buildings strategy from BEIS and hopes that this will provide greater certainty and momentum for all sectors of the heating industry.

Dr Howard Porter, BEAMA CEO stated: “This is a time for action. We have the tools we need to decarbonise, and

the technologies available on the market today should now be deployed at scale to deliver on the UK’s 2030 targets. Net Zero represents unparalleled change across our industry, and the only way to efficiently transform our energy sector is by working collaboratively. As our attention turns to delivery, the focus is on designing the appropriate regulatory frameworks to support job creation and the growing market for UK zero carbon products. We are working collaboratively with Government and look forward to the additional clarity on its plans and strategies expected to be published this Summer.”

CK SUPPORTS ‘BRIGHT SPARKS’ OF THE FUTURE Carl Kammerling International has received a ‘Business Recognition 2021’ award for its work with Leicester College.

‘Bright Sparks by CKI’ college sponsorship scheme began in 2003 and has provided Leicester College with quality hand tools and training resources to help students develop their skills.

Since the ‘Bright Sparks by CKI’ scheme began, Carl Kammerling International has supported over 50,000 apprentice electricians and now provides 60 colleges across the UK and Ireland

with free professional standard C.K tools for use in their workshops.

This year Bright Sparks by CKI is set to be further enhanced to enable students to get the most out of the scheme. There will be a strong focus on educational aspects, which will continue to provide C.K hand tools for practical lessons, with the addition of knowledge designed to support theory-based lessons. A series of educational posters will be available, as well as full access to Productwise, an online learning resource packed full of useful information.

ANSELL LIGHTING ACHIEVES LIA CERTIFICATION FOR LUMINAIRE TESTING LABORATORY Ansell Lighting has achieved LIA Laboratory Certification 003 for its Warrington-based luminaire testing facilities.

The laboratory is one of just six in the UK to have achieved the accreditation, enabling Ansell to validate the quality and performance of its new and existing products in-house. The LIA stamp of approval follows a significant investment

in a state-of-the-art goniophotometer, the Gonio Tunnel, for the laboratory. This enables Ansell to test components, new product design prototypes and existing products, to ensure complete accuracy and compliance with industry standards.

Mark Abbott, Managing Director at Ansell Lighting, said: “The LIA Laboratory Certification acknowledges our testing capabilities as being on a par with those

at the LIA’s own testing facilities at Telford.

“We underwent a stringent evaluation process, covering everything from test equipment and procedures to our quality management system and independence and impartiality, and are delighted to have earned our place among an elite group within the luminaire community.”

New research on electrical safety published

RESEARCH REVEALS NEED TO IMPROVE SAFETY Fluke has published the results of its second annual electrical safety survey which revealed a disconnect between the importance of safety and the practice of safety in the workplace.

The 2021 survey asked 511 electricians and electrical workers to weigh in on the culture of safety and safety practices in their workplace, including the provision of adequate safety training and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

The survey revealed that 98 per cent of respondents agree that a strong culture of safety is important to keep workers safe.

However only 38 per cent believe that companies have such a culture, highlighting a need for improving electrical safety in the workplace. Last year, 44 per cent of survey respondents agreed that

there was a strong culture of safety in most companies, yet 99 per cent believed there was an opportunity to improve electrical safety in the workplace.

Ninety per cent of respondents were considered ‘essential workers’ during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and most (85 per cent) were able to continue to work.

Only 25 per cent of the surveyed

workers felt that companies provided adequate safety training. However, when questioned about the use of PPE, 82 per cent of respondents said electricians often fail to use the right PPE for the job because it is inconvenient.

Hans-Dieter Schuessele, Senior Electrical Application Engineer and Standardization Manager EMEA at Fluke, commented: “It is clear that attitudes toward the safety of workers in the electrical industry could be improved.

Workers need to take more personal responsibility for their own safety by following best practice and using appropriate PPE. However, companies also need to help by fostering a safety-first culture and offering the necessary training.”

NEWS & VIEWS New legislation welcomed by SyLvania

SYLVANIA EMBRACES NEW LIGHTING REGULATIONS The new Single Lighting Regulations (SLR) and Energy Label Regulations (ELR) will come into effect on 1st September 2021, which will effectively combine relevant past rules and encompasses all available lighting technologies.

The legislation now simply classifies lighting products as ‘light sources' (lamps, sealed-for life luminaires and modules) and ‘containing products’ (luminaires with replaceable light source or control gear), as opposed to ‘lamps’ and ‘luminaires’.

Therefore, the new energy label regulation is applicable only for light sources, and each light source will be given an energy rating between A and G. In line with the higher performance threshold, certain existing lighting technologies no longer comply and will be banned.

The environment and sustainability are at the core of the new Single Lighting Regulations and Energy Label Regulations.

The most visible change is the recalibration of the energy rating scale that is displayed on the packaging. In an important adjustment, regulators have adopted a new scale to allow for a wider scope of efficiency performance. The current A++ classification will now score a mid-table ‘E’ within a revised A to G range.

This will help companies strive for even greater efficiency and integrate the principle of circular economy into product development. Lighting products classified as ‘containing products’ will no longer require an energy label and are expected to have the features of replaceability and refurbishment, either by the end customer or a qualified electrician, where necessary.

The implementation of SLR and ELR has been welcomed by Sylvania. In response to the new EU regulations and changes to the display of the energy rating scale, a major redesign of the company’s product packaging was initiated reflecting feedback from both consumers and trade partners.

“The new regulations have provided an ideal opportunity to roll out the company’s universal packaging strategy for lamps. We also embrace the opportunity to inspire even higher levels of product efficiency in the future,” commented Anuj Vasu, Segment Head, Consumer at Sylvania.

BIRKDALE ACQUIRES ELLUMIÉRE BRAND Birkdale has announced its acquisition of garden lighting systems brand Ellumiére. The move expands Birkdale’s portfolio even further with products that include deck lights, spotlights and illuminated bollards.

Birkdale’s acquisition of the lighting brand means the Ellumiére product range

will now be available via Birkdale’s merchant supply-chain, allowing the products to become more accessible to landscape gardeners, fencing contractors and trade professionals.

“Our acquisition of Ellumiére marks an important step for the growth of Birkdale and its product offering,” commented

John Abernethie, Managing Director of Birkdale. “With this innovative plug-and-play lighting range now sitting alongside our existing product portfolio, we are providing the trade with yet more ways to enhance a project with well-designed and simple to install solutions.”

Kitemark certification can boost smart security sales

GROW SMART SECURITY SALES WITH KITEMARKED SYSTEMS Electrical wholesalers can effectively grow their smart security sales and support professional security installers in allaying homeowners’ cybersecurity concerns, by stocking and recommending products certified against the BSI IoT Kitemark, says ERA. According to government research, 57% of UK residents reported an increase in household use of connected devices during the pandemic and yet government regulation designed to improve the security of IoT products is not due to become law until later in 2021. The BSI Kitemark certification for Internet of

Things (IoT) connected devices provides independent verification of the cybersecurity of camera and alarm systems. ERA worked in close collaboration with BSI to develop the standard and set a performance benchmark for the growing smart security sector.

Kerry Blackford, Head of Product at ERA, said: “Data security and user privacy have been enduring concerns for homeowners since app-controlled cameras and video doorbells first entered the UK

market. Householders absolutely recognise the convenience and peace of mind that connected devices can bring, but they rightly seek reassurance that their data (as well as their property) will be protected.

“By selling smart security systems certified against the IoT Kitemark, electrical wholesalers can give security installers and their customers complete confidence that both property and data are protected to the highest standard.”

WHOLESALE PROSPECTS ARE POSITIVE FOLLOWING PANDEMIC According to AMA Research, the electrical wholesale market contracted by 16% in 2020 due to the disruption to construction output caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, forecasts are looking positive as the market is expected to return to modest growth in 2021.

The performance of the electrical wholesalers’ market is intrinsically linked to the performance of the construction sector, with the majority of its products required in new build and RMI activities.

Covid-19 led to a significant curtailment of construction activity and electrical wholesalers’ business operation. As

trading gradually returned to more normal conditions in the latter part of 2020, supply shortages were experienced in many key product areas, leading to price rises.

It is expected that the number of electrical wholesalers establishing e-commerce operations will increase and will no longer be confined mainly to larger national and regional chains.

However, trade counters will continue to be the main focus of business for most smaller regional and local wholesalers for the near future at least.

AMA Research believes there will be increasing focus on higher value,

specialised products, for example through products aimed at the industrial automation sector. Other growing product sectors markets are likely to include home automation and building management systems, electric vehicle charging products and renewable energy products, such as those associated with heat pumps.

Abdul Tantouch, Market Research Analyst at AMA Research commented: “Following the substantial downturn caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, only modest improvement is forecast for 2021, before economic recovery drives more robust growth from 2022.”

Support for wholesalers preparing for lighting changes

LEDVANCE OFFERS SUPPORT FOR WHOLESALERS COMPLYING TO NEW LIGHTING REGULATIONS LEDVANCE is looking ahead and helping wholesalers to prepare for the new eco-design and energy label regulations by smoothing their path towards technical and legal compliance when specifying LEDVANCE products.

The new Single Lighting Regulation (SLR) and Energy Labelling Regulation (ELR) represent the next major step towards efficient and climate-friendly lighting with defined new regulations for the sustainability of lighting products and the labelling of their energy efficiency. In addition, the new European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL) centralises all relevant information for all light sources on the market for the first time.

Commenting on the updates, Nelo Neves, Head of Trade Sales UK and Ireland, LEDVANCE said: “LEDVANCE expressly welcomes new regulations that promote sustainable lighting design, so we are actively supporting our partners with the development of new and even

more energy-efficient light sources with measures and information that will guide wholesalers through the changes. We ensure wholesalers can recommend and offer suitable and high-quality LED replacements for the phased-out products in good time and all existing LEDVANCE products have already been entered in the EPREL.” Since taking the decision in 2009 to

ban incandescent lamps, the EU and UK have been phasing out less energy-efficient light sources in several stages. 1 September 2021 will begin the phase-out of CFLi lamps with integrated control gear, certain high-voltage and low-voltage halogen lamps and T12/T2 fluorescent lamps. 1 September 2023 will launch the phase-out of T8 fluorescent lamps and halogen pins.

A crucial element of the new regulations is the redefining of the areas of application into ‘light sources’ and ‘containing products.’ The regulations now refer exclusively to light sources and separate control gears, instead of to lamps, LED modules and luminaires. ‘Light sources’ are electrically operated products that emit light, including all traditional and LE lamps for general lighting, but also fully integrated luminaires from which the light sources cannot be removed using commonly available tools without permanent damage.

WHOLESALE INVESTMENT FRAUDSTER JAILED Electrical wholesale investment fraudster Jolan Saunders has been jailed for almost nine years for failing to pay a multi-million pound confiscation order.

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) secured convictions against Saunders and his co-conspirators Michael Strubel and Spencer Steinberg in 2015, showing that they had deceived people into investing in Saunders Electrical Wholesale Ltd by lying about supply contracts. The fraudsters overstated

minor contracts with the Hilton, Marriott, Plaza and Holiday Inn hotel chains.

Saunders, Strubel and Steinberg also lied about a non-existent contract to supply the Olympic village for the London 2012 Olympics.

They took almost £80m from investors from their London base and spent it on yachts, expensive property and luxury items. SFO chief operating officer John Carroll said: “With callous disdain for those he has harmed, Jolan Saunders has resorted to falsehoods and obfuscation to

avoid paying compensation to the victims of his pernicious fraud.

“We will not allow him to do so. He has rightly been jailed and we will continue to fight to deliver justice and return compensation to his victims.”

Saunders and Strubel were jailed for seven years, whereas Steinberg was sentenced to six years and nine months.

Saunders was ordered to pay £5,262,301.03 to compensate his victims after an investigation by the SFO’s Proceeds and Crime team.

MOVERS AND SHAKERS It’s been a busy few months in the electrical industry, with new appointments and shake-ups across different sectors. Keep up to date with the latest movements here, as we detail who has gone where.

Pete Blackburn and Jane Rylands ANSELL LIGHTING As part of its ambitious expansion plans, Ansell Lighting has made two senior appointments to its Warrington headquarters. Pete Blackburn has joined the business as Head of Product Development and Jane Rylands has been named Head of Marketing.

Pete joins Ansell with more than 15 years’ experience, starting his career as a lighting designer at Whitecroft Lighting, before progressing to Global Product Manager at GE lighting and most recently, Global Product Manager at ACDC Lighting, part of the Zumtobel group. In his new role he will be responsible for leading the development of innovative new Ansell lighting products for the UK and international markets.

Jane Rylands joins Ansell from Glen Dimplex Home Appliances, where she was Head of Marketing Communications, overseeing the marketing strategy for household names Morphy Richards, Stoves, Belling, Lec and Britannia Living.

Jane will lead the development and implementation of Ansell’s marketing strategy both domestically and overseas.

Steve Slyne TREND NETWORKS Steve Slyne has been appointed as Customer Experience Manager for Europe for TREND Networks. In the newly created role, Steve will lead the customer service and technical support departments, ensuring distributors and end users have access to the dependable equipment, data and support they need. His key area of focus will be on providing a frictionless point of contact and consistent high level of service for existing and potential customers, regardless of their particular needs.

Chris Shore HYLEC Hylec-APL has appointed Chris Shore as South Western Area Sales Manager. Chris is responsible for UK sales from Cornwall in the South-West across to Hampshire in the South, North and South Wales and up to Cheshire and the West Midlands. He joins Ed Lightfoot, Northern Area Sales Manager and Jake Pitcher, Southern Area Sales Manager in the Hylec sales team headed by Sales Director Steve Robbins. Shore joins following 20 years with a leading electronic components distributor, where his experience included worldwide purchasing and sales.

Sonny Gladdish and Chris Jackson NIGLON Two new Area Sales Managers are set to bolster Niglon’s growth – concentrating on the South East. Sonny Gladdish and Chris Jackson joined the team in July, with Sonny covering his home county of Kent as well as South London and parts of Sussex. He has previously worked with ML Accessories, who supply lighting products and electrical wiring accessories, and test equipment firm DiLog. Chris, who is based in Sussex and will cover the rest of the county as well as North London and Surrey, has worked within the electrical industry for four decades including experience with Edmundson Electrical, JCC Lighting, KSR Lighting and B.E.G. Commercial Director Paul Dawson explained the company had originally advertised for one Area Sales Manager but they were so impressed by both Sonny and Chris, they had decided to create two roles: “Sonny and Chris both have lots of experience and great knowledge about the industry, which we feel sure they will put to good use in their new roles. They have already made a fantastic start to their careers with Niglon, and settled well into the team – we can’t wait to see the success they can help us achieve within the South East region.”

Matt Sturgess and Jack Adams LIA The Lighting Industry Association (LIA) has appointed Matt Sturgess to the position of CEO of the LIA. Matt replaces interim CEO Paul Crisp who has been doing an exceptional job supporting the LIA team and its members as they plan for the post 2020 era.

Matt started out professional life as an electronics graduate engineer, sponsored by a Thorn EMI business. Early on, he moved into sales and progressed into senior roles in different industries, with a passion for personal learning and development. Drawing from his experience supporting growth in blue chip global businesses and SME’s, along the way he gained his MBA. More recently he has worked within the lighting industry having operated as the Commercial Director of Sylvania Lighting and also held the position of Managing Director at Simmonsigns.

Congratulations are also in order for Jack Adams as he undertakes his new position of Laboratory Manager at the LIA. The LIA Laboratory is the largest lighting specific facility in Europe. As a result of recent considerable investment, it has established itself as a key provider of testing and certification for lighting products at its state-of-the-art offices located in Telford. This meant that the LIA required a Laboratory Manager who had the knowledge, experience and vision to deliver the next step in the Laboratory’s evolution.

Jack originally joined the LIA after graduating from the University of Sheffield, with a BS in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and has moved through all areas of the Laboratory from Technician, Certification, Technical Lead and now Laboratory Manager. Jack said his aim is “to ensure the LIA Laboratory provides excellent customer service as well as balancing the requirements that come with being one of only four NCBs (National Certification Body) in the UK.”

Joe Ryder and Elliss McKenna ESP As demand for its products across all categories continues to rise, ESP has made another new appointment within the sales team to strengthen its support for existing customers and continue to target and develop new business opportunities. Joe Ryder has been appointed area sales manager for the Home Counties region. His career in the industry started when he joined one of the country’s leading electrical wholesalers on their graduate scheme and worked his way up to manage one of their most successful branches. He has also spent time with a lighting manufacturer with responsibility for some major city centre lighting schemes. At ESP he will be helping to promote and expand the growing ESP portfolio of products which currently includes CCTV, Access Control, Fire Protection, Emergency Lighting, Essentials and Sangamo.

A new member has also been added to the expanding purchasing department, with Elliss McKenna joining the team as purchasing and logistics co-ordinator. She will be an important asset to help meet the demands on the department as the business continues to flourish.

Liz Barclay ECA The Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) has welcomed Liz Barclay as the new Small Business Commissioner (SBC). ECA works closely with the Office of the Small Business Commissioner to improve commercial practices and behaviour, particularly around late payments. The engineering services body has many small business Members. It actively supports the expansion of the Small Business Commissioner’s powers, remit, and role. ECA’s Director of Legal and Business, Rob Driscoll, said: “We believe the role of the Small Business Commissioner, together with the Prompt Payment Code, has been and continues to be transformative in leading the improvement of commercial behaviour for SMEs.” The ECA is looking forward to working with the new SBC to redress unfair commercial practices, which are the scourge of SMEs.

Andy Turner C-TEC C-TEC has appointed Andy Turner as its new Business Development Manager for System Sales.

With over 25 years’ experience in the fire industry including nine years as one of C-TEC’s Technical Fire Account Managers, Andy has a wealth of experience and is set to play a key role in identifying new business opportunities and assisting the company’s transition into a complete systems solutions provider.

Andy’s primary objective in the newly-created role will be to increase the specification and sales of C-TEC’s new state-of-the-art “CAST protocol powered” fire alarm systems including Hush, its revolutionary new BS 5839-6 Grade C domestic fire alarm solution and its EVAC-ALERT BS 8629 compliant evacuation alert system.

NEED A HAND UP – THE EIC IS HERE TO HELP The Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) exists to look after people from the electrical, electronics and energy industries when they or their families need a hand up – big or small.

IC assistance is available for any person working (or who has previously worked) in the electrical and energy industries and their families, because in a family, tough times are tough for everybody. EIC’s Employee Assistance Programmes are free and confidential, and you can call them directly, today.

The Electrical Industries Charity relies on support from the industry and its members so they can continue to help those who fall on hard times within our sector. There are lots of different ways you can get involved and support the EIC which include signing up to powerLottery; attending an industry event; taking on a Challenge for a Cause such as Kilimanjaro or the arctic wilderness, or you can set up your own fundraising initiative and have some fun with your friends and colleagues.

A helping hand The Electrical Industries Charity recently supported Grant, an electrical wholesaler, who had been a problem gambler for many years, but his addiction really spiralled out of control when he was furloughed from work. He found it difficult to keep himself occupied, and with hours of the day stretching ahead of him, Grant began to gamble more and more. Grant’s reduced wage also meant his gambling addiction

was starting to seriously impact his financial as well as his mental wellbeing.

The impact on people’s mental health can be particularly severe if they resort to cutting back on essentials, such as heating and eating, or if creditors are aggressive or insensitive when collecting debts. Financial difficulty drastically reduces recovery rates for common mental health conditions.

Grant started to rack up considerable debt, and when he returned to work, he

was in a financial hole. Grant had attended wellbeing presentations facilitated by a Charity champion within his work and understood he could get free and confidential support from the Electrical Industries Charity.

Grant contacted the Charity and spoke to a welfare case worker who helped Grant tackle his gambling problem head on. Grant’s caseworker referred him for cognitive behavioural therapy, which investigates thought patterns associated with negative behaviours. Grant had twelve sessions of therapy funded and sourced by the Charity, which helped him to establish coping techniques for when he felt the urge to gamble. The Charity also encouraged Grant to join a gamblers support group. Grant spoke to GamCare, a free information and support line for problem gamblers, and they established a network who acted as a lifeline for Grant.

Grant’s caseworker “referred him for cognitive behavioural therapy, which investigates thought patterns associated with negative behaviours.

”

The Electrical Industries Charity also put Grant in touch with StepChange, a debt charity who provide practical financial advice and support. StepChange conducted a robust and detailed financial review and recommended bankruptcy as the most suitable option. Grant and the Electrical Industries Charity casework team remained in contact, and he applied for short-term financial assistance to help pay his bankruptcy fee. The Charity assessed his income and expenditure, and after

evaluation, the welfare team awarded Grant the sum for the bankruptcy fee.

Grant’s bankruptcy application was successful, and he could start on a clean slate with a renewed sense of confidence that he could look after his financial and mental wellbeing. Grant has adopted budgeting techniques and has placed restrictions on his electronic devices which forbid gambling apps or websites. Grant now feels more in control of his health and his wellbeing and is looking forward to a more positive future.

A. There is always room to improve by embracing new innovation and delivering the latest trends in tools. As we are moving more and more digital, this makes it quicker and far more convenient to reach out and keep up to date. Manufacturers need to keep exciting their customers with what’s new in order to influence and initiate the purchase of the product. Social media is by far the fastest organic platform to get everyone talking and creating a demand within the wholesalers, but content is always key as this is the driver.

How did you get involved in the industry and what do you enjoy most about your job?

A. After leaving school I went straight into an apprenticeship and have always strived to find ways to make the job easier which is how inventing all began and has now grown into my passion.

What were the reasons for founding Clipacore?

A. During my self-employed business I broke my thumb hitting spanners with a hammer with frustration when trying to remove a core bit from the drill due to high torque tension locking up tight and missed the spanner!

It’s also widely recognised now that investing in higher priced tools/equipment outperforms lesser quality and so, many tradespeople will agree it’s worth spending a bit more to prevent what is avoidable - re-investing.

I don’t believe it will have a lasting impact, as once we resume with lesser government guidelines and restrictions in place, I feel we will all have an urgency and desire to put it all behind us and move on, and not just trades across the industry but customers who are the lifeblood of our business.

A. Once identifying a gap and real market need with first mover advantage opportunity, value engineering the design is key to ensure its viable from a cost perspective with healthy margins for the wholesalers to then be able to sell onto their customers.

ccording to AMA Research’s latest lighting report (the 15th edition Lighting Market Report – UK 2020-2024) the key driver for the lighting market is the rapid adoption of LED lighting in both the nondomestic and domestic construction sectors. The advent of LED lighting, and the retrofitting of higher priced LED products into conventional lighting,

boosted market value significantly between 2015 and 2017 but a sharp fall in LED prices since then has led to a decline in market size in the last two years.

LEDs growth in market share has been underpinned by energy efficiency regulations, leading to the removal from sale of almost all incandescent lighting and most halogen lighting. LEDs now represent the majority of UK lamp sales. LED lamps

have seen significant improvements in light output and quality in recent years, including a wider spectrum and warmer white light, helping to boost their acceptability in the market.

With LED lighting increasingly seen as key to improving environmental footprints and driving down energy consumption, the global LED market will continue to grow significantly in 2021 and beyond. MARY Mary is an LED floodlight with an earth spike and reflector to produce a sharp, defined light beam which makes it perfect for highlighting specific areas of the garden or building facades. The fitting is sealed to IP66, and IK08 rated for impact resistance and has a high corrosion resistance (C4) with water ingress protection. The fitting has a 50,000-hour lifetime, is compatible with the THORNeco cable system, and comes complete with open leads adapter and a connection cable with an integrated water stop.

LEONIE In external areas requiring a small but powerful floodlight, Leonie is the perfect choice. GLARE FORCE Over the last year, there has been a rise in demand for UV lighting products to disinfect commercial buildings.

However, some UV devices are being sold and used incorrectly, with safety and efficacy varying from product to product. Sarah Watson of Red Arrow Electrical Distribution answers some key questions to help users utilise UV lighting in a safe and effective manner.

What is UGR? With employees returning to workplaces, electricians need to understand the impact that poor lighting can have on employee comfort, particularly when it comes to glare stemming from more than one competing light source.

That’s why the Unified Glare Rating (UGR) exists. It’s a measure of the intensity of light coming from an application compared with the intensity of light from the surrounding indoor area. It’s important to remember that the UGR value for an area isn’t dependent on a specific fixture, but rather the room it is in – its shape, size, the reflectivity of walls, ceilings and floors and so on. This means that electricians will often need guidance when it comes to fitting the right lighting products for a commercial space.

Why is UGR important?

Warehouses, factories, shops, showrooms – whatever the commercial premises, the presence of glare can cause extreme discomfort to people working there for long periods. Overly bright lights can bounce off computer screens or white walls, disrupting focus and even causing headaches over a sustained period.

There are two types of glare – discomfort glare, a sensation caused by high brightness (usually when a bright light source is in their vision during a visual task) - and disability glare – the impairment of vision without necessarily causing discomfort. Either way, fitting lights that comply with European UGR recommendations boosts productivity and improves the quality of life for employees.

What are the recommended UGR levels?

This depends on the space. For office lighting, UGR levels of 16 to 19 are generally recommended (although this shouldn’t exceed 19). For industrial environments, the level should be between 22 and 25, while 25-28 is recommended for circulation areas and corridors. A UGR rating beyond 28 is deemed harsh lighting that could cause discomfort, which is why electricians must ensure they have the right lighting applications for the task at hand.

The BS EN 12464 standard does specify recommended max UGR levels for different applications across more than 280 different work areas. The standard

specifies best practices for providing adequate lighting that meets the need for visual comfort and performance from people carrying out visual tasks.

Do spaces have to comply with recommended UGR levels by law?

There is no legal requirement for businesses to deploy a specific UGR level in accordance with their operations. It is likely because a designer could do everything in their power to select light fittings or design rooms in such a way that they hit a particular UGR rating.

However, knocking a wall through, adding or removing a window or even simply changing a piece of furniture could impact UGR for the whole room.

In short, while not a requirement, it’s still good practice for buildings to fit within the boundaries of regulations so that UGR isn’t damaging employees’ quality of life.

This is where the distinction really matters, as although lighting products are rated as being UGR<19 rated, the UGR refers to the actual installation not the specific light fitting. In reality, UGR<19 light fittings are so rated because the products have a light distribution that helps the electrician deliver a rating at UGR rating, as long as that product is fitted in the appropriate position.

WHERE IS LED LIGHTING GOING? Q

Does LED lighting now rule the roost?

RV. It would be hard to argue against the assertion that LED lighting is now the predominant lighting source for UK residential, retail and commercial applications. Industry researchers IBISWorld estimates that sales for LED products and ancillaries will reach £2.4 billion this year. That’s a lot of LED lamps flying off your readers’ shelves!

PEW spoke to Russell Vanstone, Product Development Manager at Knightsbridge, to get his view of where LED lighting is going and developments that could be real revenue raisers.

While other mainstream lighting sources have fallen by the wayside, the LED world has grown and grown. There’s probably not a house, office or retail shop in the UK that doesn’t have LED lamps installed somewhere. In fact, according to findings from German electrical magazine Reichelt, 73% of UK consumers are already reaping the benefits of using LED lamps in their home, with 17% of respondents having already switched to LED lights completely.

So yes, it would be safe to say that LED is king of the castle.

Why do you think that is?

RV. There are many reasons behind the success of LEDs, one of the most influential being the vastly improved lumen output over the last couple of years. Couple this with the ability to put LEDs into almost any kind of light fitting, making them extremely flexible and versatile, and you have the almost perfect lighting solution.

You only need to look at the growth in accent lighting, task lighting, decorative lighting, track lighting – the simple pendant hanging from the ceiling just doesn’t cut it anymore! Architects, interior designers, even the homeowner have all latched onto the transformative effect LED schemes can have when positioned and installed correctly. The colour rendering, the efficacy, the energy-saving nature, all

contribute to the increasing adoption of LEDs across home, business and retail environments.

Q

So, what next for LEDs?

RV. I think that one of the challenges is bringing greater utility to LED lighting products. By that I mean increasing a product’s functionality, its ease of installation, even its economy of stocking for wholesalers, that’s to say a ‘one product, numerous solutions’ approach that allows inventory to be kept to the minimum while offering the buyer a product that meets a variety of needs.

That’s an exciting concept.

For instance, let’s take an LED downlight. Currently, an installer will invariably choose a product that offers a fixed performance in terms of watts, lumens, colour render and once installed that’s it. The scope for changing how that installation works is limited to removing the downlighter and installing another one with different performance characteristics.

That’s just more time and cost. Now imagine a scenario where the installer could effectively ‘dial in’ the characteristics from wattage (lumen output) to CCT prior to the installation and then change it at a later date should the need arise. If you make the connector system one that can be plugged in or unplugged very easily to facilitate removal of the unit and you now have a downlighter that really adds value.

Now the next challenge is to maximise the installation opportunity for your ‘next generation’ downlight by making it super compliant whatever the situation or application. Make it Fire Rated for solid

So, is that that something the trade counter can look forward to soon?

You can begin to see the huge benefits of such a product. Then the finishing touch would be to offer different style bezels to suit the colourway of the room or installation in question. SHANE’S STORY Donating to charity can sometimes seem a little impersonal – especially in the modern times of online giving and direct debits - but when Niglon made the decision to partner with the Electrical Industries Charity it resulted in a real affinity with the charity and its beneficiaries.

T

he Niglon team wanted to help the EIC improve the lives of their peers across the electrical industry who had been impacted by mental or physical ill health, financial worries or Covid-19. That’s why they are keen to share the stories of those individuals, to show these are real people for whom the EIC’s support has made a real difference. People like Shane – an electrical distributor who contacted the charity after becoming unwell.

After starting a new job involving long hours and lots of travel, he began feeling very tired and breathless; when the symptoms worsened, he was sent for various tests – a stressful time for him, his partner Emma and his children Eva and Mya who were all about to travel to Great Yarmouth for a holiday.

Diagnosis Shane’s employment was terminated just before the end of his probationary period, and he became even more unwell to the point where he spent their trip away bedridden. He found out he had fluid on his lungs, and by this point had swollen up so badly he could barely get his trousers on.

A day after he returned home, Shane was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with a Dilated Cardiomyopathy. He was just minutes from having a heart attack, was in severe heart failure and had developed two blood clots in his heart – despite leading a healthy lifestyle and not drinking or smoking.

For the first two days he was in a critical condition, and he spent a further five days on an Acute Cardiac Unit. When he was discharged, he still needed to attend hospital appointments most weeks (some of which could be 70 miles away from his home) and he was unable to start his new job because of his condition.

While the family could cover the costs of their rent and utility bills, without Shane working full time and with the added costs of travel and hospital parking, they were having to sell clothing, toys and other items to afford their weekly food shop.

They turned to the EIC, who were able to provide a food voucher, pay for school uniforms and shoes, top up the girls’ school dinner cards, and secure funds from League of the Helping Hand for the new carpets the family had been in need of before Shane’s ill health.

And when he felt well enough, the charity even organised for Shane and his family to enjoy a day out at the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Yorkshire, booked their train tickets and sent some fun activities for the girls to do on the journey.

DEBOX SM40 JUNCTION BOX The latest addition to the Hylec range is the new Debox SM40, which is specifically designed to fit inside the 40mm ceiling apertures of today’s ceiling downlights. The smallest in-line junction box on the market, it is supplied complete with all components, including a 4-pole terminal block suitable for round cables, maximum 24A, and can be wired in seconds. Using Debox SM40 simply requires the installer to insert the cables into the 4-pole terminal block and tighten the terminal screws, lower the tool-less cable clamps and secure the lid with the supplied locking clip.

The locking clip can only be opened with a tool, which complies with current regulations. Debox SM40 is supplied with a spare locking clip, so that should it need to be reopened subsequent to initial fitting, it can be re-secured with the second locking clip.

Carolyn Mason, ECA Head of Education and Training, discusses the ‘Mentor Me’ initiative, which offers young people careers advice and guidance from all corners of the electrotechnical industry.

W

hat has been the most useful careers advice you’ve ever received?

Was it during your school years, at college, or from someone already working in the industry?

Whilst careers advisers will do their best with the resources they have, it cannot replace the wisdom of someone who has worked in a particular industry and can give a personal account of their experiences. Now more than ever we must support the next generation and give sound advice to those who need it.

Over the last 18 months, young people at career crossroads in their lives have had to make important decisions without the support, guidance and resources they may have received previously.

Mentor Me That’s why The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership (TESP) is asking people from all corners of the electrotechnical industry to donate just 45 minutes of their time to mentor a young person under The Youth Group’s ‘Mentor Me’ initiative.

To date, over 1.7 million young people have been supported by The Youth Group, providing them with mentoring, advice and careers guidance. The fact that these are online mentoring sessions is an added benefit, as it removes the time and travel barriers normally associated with traditional careers events. You don’t have to currently be working as an electrician. Whether your

The minimum commitment is to support just one 45 minute online mentoring session with a young person.

From a low carbon perspective, we were also pleased to hear that for each mentoring session carried out via The Youth Group, a tree will be planted in one of the National Parks across the UK as part of the ‘Net Zero with Nature’ programme.

If as a mentor you choose to continue, you can speak to a variety of different job seekers and share your experiences and insights, or work with one individual and support them on their journey to

develop and get a job.

Why not look within your organisation to see who might volunteer – from owner to apprentice, electrician to designer – anyone with industry experience could make a real difference in supporting a young person.

Inspiring young people Here at the ECA we’ll also be encouraging our staff to get involved.

Now is our chance to build a network of electrotechnical mentors to inform and inspire young people and show them the opportunities this industry holds.
