ARE WE TAKING ‘SMART’ TOO FAR?
C
all me old fashioned but I have a dictionary – an actual hard back dictionary. I’ve had it for years and it was given to me as a present when I got my first job as a journalist. Many years later it rarely gets used because we have computers, the internet and our dear old friend Google! But every once in a while I drag it back out of the bookcase. In this issue we are focussing on Smart Technology – but what does Smart actually mean? According to my Oxford English Dictionary and Thesaurus it has many meanings including ‘astute’, ‘well-kept and neat’ as well as ‘bright’, ‘brisk’, ‘canny’, ‘clever’ and ‘ingenious’. Immediately under the word ‘smart’ is ‘smart aleck’ which is defined as being an irritatingly oversmart person. Now here’s the thing…. we have a lot of smart technology – some of it is amazing and genuinely makes your life easier but some of it is irritating. My question therefore is when does canny, clever and ingenious become that irritatingly oversmart person? A couple of weeks ago I was chatting to a colleague about their fairly traumatic morning – turns out Alexa wasn’t functioning properly and couldn’t find the music they wanted, the sat nav packed up on the way to work and their fitness app hadn’t accurately calculated yesterday’s number of steps so now they were way down on their target for the week. In the dim and distant past the main trauma which most people had experienced by 9am on a workday was discovering there wasn’t any milk for their coffee. Do we therefore rely too heavily on smart technology, and do we really need it? According to the latest Home Automation Market Report from AMA Research, the home automation market value increased by more than 46% between 2016 and 2019 and is expected to grow by a further 47% by 2025. That suggests there is definitely an appetite for new, smart technology. A quick flick through this issue will show you that there is a lot of new, smart technology out there. I genuinely applaud new product innovation because we cannot afford to stand still and there’s a lot going on in our industry right now. Lights that turn on when you enter a room – and more importantly turn off when you leave are fabulous because they are saving energy and money. IoT lighting solutions are also a welcome alternative to touching shared surfaces – particularly as we start to emerge from a global pandemic. I do still wonder though whether some products are just being made smart for the sake of it – perhaps I am just getting old, but should we really be living at the whim of an app which counts our steps and what happens when the lights don’t turn on automatically when we enter the room? I’d be interested to hear your views on Smart Technology and whether the industry is getting it right or taking it too far. Let me know what your top ‘Smart Product’ is so we can share it with other readers – but I’d also be interested to hear from those who hark back to the days when technology was simpler, and you had an element of control over your life – perhaps there aren’t any of you left! See you next month

NEWS & VIEWS SWA PURCHASED BY SHOAL
SHOAL GROUP ACQUIRES SPECIALIST WIRING ACCESSORIES Shoal Group has acquired SWA, a leading supplier of essential cable terminations, fastenings, fixings and tools for the electrical and construction industries. SWA was established in 1988 and is committed to providing top-quality products and services to its customers. It stocks over 8,000 product lines at its 50,000 square foot warehouse and
currently employs 54 people. Following the acquisition, SWA will continue to operate under the same brand, from the same location, and with the same commitment to its customers and colleagues. Mark Taylor, Managing Director of Shoal Group, commented: “SWA and Shoal Group are a great cultural fit with
shared values, similar business models and complementary products and end-markets. This acquisition is in line with our growth strategy and will expand our UK footprint with the addition of a trusted brand, innovative and own-brand products with a strong presence in the UK & Ireland electrical wholesale market.”
PRODUCT SAFETY MARKING DEADLINE EXTENDED The government has announced that businesses will have an additional year to apply new product safety markings for most products placed on the market in England, Scotland and Wales. The move comes after the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) and a number of prominent industry trade bodies had raised concerns about the availability and capacity of testing for
products under the new UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) marking regime introduced post‐Brexit. The UKCA marking replaces the product safety labelling the UK previously used while a member of the EU, such as the CE mark. From 1 January 2023, products will be required to carry the new UKCA mark if they are to be sold in England, Scotland
and Wales. For products to be sold in Northern Ireland, CE marking will continue to be recognised due to the Northern Ireland protocol. Companies exporting to the EU market will still need a CE mark on their products as the UKCA mark is not recognised by the EU. The CLC has updated its guidance on product markings to reflect the delay.
VENT-AXIA NAMED AS DOUBLE-AWARD FINALIST Vent-Axia has been shortlisted in two categories in the prestigious H&V News Awards 2021. The Vent-Axia ‘Lo-Carbon Multivent MEV Family’ is a finalist in ‘Domestic Ventilation Product of the Year’ category while the company’s ‘COVID-19 Support Campaign’ has been shortlisted for the ‘Covid Frontline Achievement of the Year’ award.
The H&V News Awards have been celebrating the achievements of the heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industry for 27 years, rewarding the most forward-thinking and innovative businesses in the sector. The next stage of judging requires companies to present their entry to the judging panel, followed by a Q&A session. Winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony

on Thursday, 11th November 2021 at the Hilton Park Lane, London. “We are thrilled to once again be recognised with a double shortlisting at these prestigious industry awards. Our staff have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to support the industry and communicate the essential role of ventilation in mitigating virus transmission and so we are very pleased their hard work and dedication is being recognised through the shortlisting of the COVID-19 Support Campaign”, said Lena Hebestreit, Marketing Manager at Vent-Axia. “We’re also delighted that our new Lo-Carbon Multivent MEV Family has been shortlisted in the Domestic Ventilation Product of the Year category. UK HOMES GAIN HEAT TWICE AS FAST AS THOSE IN EUROPE
STUDY SUGGESTS UK HOMES HEAT UP FASTER THAN THOSE IN EUROPE A new study by tado° has found that UK homes gain heat significantly faster than European neighbours on hot summer days. The study, conducted in over 60,000 UK homes in the summer of 2021, found that a UK home with an indoor temperature of 20°C and an outside temperature of 30°C in sunny weather gains on average 5°C after three hours. Compared with some Western European neighbours, such as Germany and Italy, UK homes are gaining heat more than twice as fast. This means that Brits have to suffer even more from uncomfortable temperatures at home during heat waves than their neighbours. Studies have shown
that high temperatures at home lead to a loss in productivity and can also trigger serious health issues such as dehydration or heat strokes. Global heating also is making heat waves and other extreme weather events more frequent. Although, UK homes are among the quickest in Europe to heat up in hot weather, there is also a difference between the North and South. Whereas Southern English homes heat up on average by 4.7°C after three hours, Scottish home temperatures rise by 5.6°C in the same conditions. The UK housing stock is also the oldest in Europe and British homes struggle to maintain desired temperatures in the cold
and heat. The UK has the oldest housing stock in comparison to EU countries with approximately 38% of its homes dating from before 1946, compared to 24% for Germany and Sweden. Christian Deilmann, Tado° co-founder & CPO, said: “Our study shows the degree to how homes react to outdoor temperatures and solar radiation. As heat waves become more common, residents will increasingly turn to air conditioning to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures.”

NEWS & VIEWS COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS IMPACTING EV TAKE UP
NEW RESEARCH REVEALS MISCONCEPTIONS STILL HOLDING BACK ELECTRIFICATION More than one in three Brits wouldn’t consider purchasing an electric vehicle (EV), due to a perceived lack of charging points, according to new research from myenergi. 36% of those questioned felt that the charging network in the UK was unsubstantial, a figure that increased to 46%, almost one in two people, among those aged over 55. However, statistics released by the Department of Transport in May reveal that the UK’s public EV charging infrastructure has grown by over a quarter, to almost 23,000, in the past 12 months alone. With most drivers only commuting between 20-30 miles per day, and the UK’s public charging infrastructure only
set to improve, myenergi argues that a simple lack of awareness is holding back our national transition to electrification. Jordan Brompton, co-founder and CMO of myenergi, commented: “The adoption of EVs is accelerating fast, with more than 215,000 pure-electric vehicles and 455,000
plug-in hybrids now registered on UK roads. However, education is critical to maintaining this momentum, driving further uptake and supporting the transition away from dated fuel types. “While driving, maintaining and charging an EV is really simple, we need the UK public to feel confident that the charging infrastructure is sufficient. Unfortunately, there is still a misconception that EVs have a short range and public charging points are few and far between. “This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, the average range of a modern EV is 211 miles and there are now more publicly-accessible charging points than petrol stations!”
OVER 112,000 UK TRADE BUSINESSES SET UP SINCE THE INITIAL LOCKDOWN Since the first Coronavirus lockdown on 23rd March 2020, over 112,000 trade businesses have been set up in the UK, new research has revealed. The study, conducted by IronmongeryDirect, analysed over one million rows of Companies House data and found that more than one in ten (11%) of all businesses set up during the pandemic (1,019,970) are in the trade industry. Of the 112,047 new companies in
the sector, almost a fifth (19%) focus on the ‘development of building products’, with 20,753 start-ups. Similar projects also take up the next three spots, with ‘construction of domestic buildings’ and ‘commercial buildings’ both making the top five. Companies specialising in ‘electrical installation’ are not far behind, with 8,194 new businesses, while ‘plumbing, heat and air-conditioning installation’ firms also feature highly.

MOBILE SHOWROOM BACK IN ACTION
OVIA MOBILE LIGHTING SHOWROOM BACK ON THE ROAD Ovia’s custom-designed mobile lighting showroom will once again be taking to the roads, following a forced hiatus over the last 17 months. An eye-catching, state of the art, branded truck when in transit, the 5-tonne unit transforms into a spacious and stylish showroom, fitted out with a comprehensive selection of Ovia lighting and lighting control products which are mounted on display panels. With room for a hospitality table and concealed storage for presentation materials and samples, the air conditioned, fully glazed unit provides an
ideal space in which to host seminars and presentations and provide product training sessions for visitors. Its schedule for the remainder of 2021 will include branch visits and product
training for key trade days organised by Ovia’s wholesale customers and Ovia will be welcoming enquiries from new as well as existing customers. Comments Mike Collins, Ovia sales director: “We are really pleased to once again have the opportunity to make the most of our mobile showroom. Our ongoing new product development programme means we are bringing new products out on a regular basis and the mobile showroom provides a platform to demonstrate the features and benefits that will help the contractor and ultimately drive sales through the wholesaler.”
TOOLSTATION LAUNCHES NEW AD TO CELEBRATE UK TRADESPEOPLE Toolstation has launched a new brand ad to celebrate the skills of key tradespeople across the UK and remind viewers of the tough tasks they face. The latest iteration of the Tools & More brand campaign, which was launched in March this year, shows a female electrician being called out to an emergency at a West Country farm in what appears to be a quintessentially English country scene to fix an electric fence. The electrician goes into action mode as she realises that this is no ordinary escaped animal, and on completing the job, she and the farmer have contained the asset.
Greg Richardson, Head of Marketing, Toolstation, said: “We wanted to show that we understand and appreciate the unexpected situations faced by our trade customers, and while it’s not every day they encounter a T-Rex on the loose, it does nod to an everyday truth – that our
role is to equip tradespeople with everything they need to get the job done. We want to celebrate our tradespeople with this new TV spot, and to remind consumers of our core purpose at the same time.”

SPECIAL REPORT
DELVE INTO
DIGITAL Rob Mannion, founder and CEO of b2b.store, examines the power of e-commerce and looks at how to put your distribution centre in your customer’s pocket.
W
ith online retailers such as Amazon expanding into traditional B2B markets, the need to explore the potential of e-commerce has been on the radar of forward-looking electrical distributors for a while but entry barriers, such as cost and staff training, have slowed its adoption. Software as a Service (SaaS) platforms mean it is now quicker and easier than ever to create an e-commerce offer that synchronises across mobile, tablet and desktop computers, whatever their operating system. The benefits These ‘white-labelled’ solutions are designed to seamlessly integrate with existing back-office systems making it possible to get your distribution centre online and into customers’ pockets in just a few months. So, what are the benefits of doing so and how can you make sure everyone – from your sales teams to your customers – makes the most of the opportunities e-commerce offers? The drivers for online ordering in the B2B sector are much the same as for B2C, with customers appreciating the ability to place orders any time, any place: Create an order before starting a job, add to it while that job is progress, later that evening, or when you suddenly wake up
and remember about it in the small hours of the morning - baskets can be created, edited or cancelled at any time of day. Digital ordering reduces transcription and data entry errors that creep into telephone-based orders and allows customers to view the latest offers and promotions in real time, getting maximum value from every order. Tools such as basket builders also allow customers to create new lists from previous orders or add favourites quickly and easily. For distributors, additional benefits include taking online payments 24:7 at significantly lower cost than processing orders manually and creating new communications channels that can be tailored to a customer demographic of one. Promotions received at a day/time when individual customers are usually in ‘buying mode’ are far better received than
14 OCTOBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
those that interrupt other activities! Alongside growth in smartphone use, data from the wholesale sector suggests that digital orders (mobile and web) are typically significantly bigger than orders processed manually, whether in store or telesales. This should come as little surprise as the generation that has grown up using mobile phones for everything from ordering pizza to booking a doctor’s appointment moves seamlessly into the workplace. All of which sounds great, so why are so many electrical distributors still offering an analogue service in a digital world? The reasons are many and varied. For example, it is only in the last few years that ‘white labelled’, SaaS e-commerce solutions have come to the market. Traditionally, you needed to create a website, then a mobile-optimised website and maybe an app (one for iOS, one for Android, one for Windows, and so on) to create a genuine e-commerce capability. It also meant integrating different back office platforms and that all took time and money that independent distributors simply didn’t have. New technology has essentially democratised access to e-commerce, with freemium services allowing distributors to create their own, fully-branded ecommerce platforms in single click, with no upfront costs, removing the financial risk of setting up online.

SPECIAL REPORT
Secondly, compiling product data, images and technical specifications to populate an e-commerce store is time consuming and needs updating as new products come to market. At b2b.store, we have linked up with the Electrical Distributors Association to give all members using our ecommerce platform free access to its E-DATA portal, which provides just this sort of information and is updated by manufacturers themselves. So, once you have your e-commerce offer, how do you encourage people to use it? As the Connected Enterprise Report stated, putting employees at the heart of digital transformation is crucial to success. Some may be wary of new technology, not understand how it works or be worried about what e-commerce means for their own job security. Addressing these issues proactively is key to bringing employees on board and helping them feel comfortable with any changes. Choosing an e-commerce platform that integrates with existing back-office systems means there is less need for staff training while one that offers the same look, feel and intuitive user experience of similar consumer apps, also makes the switch feel more natural. Then you have to make sure your customers know about the offer and are incentivised to use it. It typically takes seven interactions with a new product before people will try it so make sure you promote it via in-distribution centre flyers and adverts, include it in mailings, email signatures and social media posts, mention it in your automated telephone greetings. You can even create virtual trade events to encourage customers to give it a try. The world is fast-changing and the Covid-19 pandemic has only accelerated the shift online for many businesses. With global distributors reaching ever further into the industry, can your distribution centre afford not to go digital? TO LEARN MORE ABOUT GOING DIGITAL VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/WB001

CHARITY UPDATE
WHAT IF HELPING YOUR INDUSTRY WAS AS SIMPLE AS SELLING A SWITCH? The Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) introduces Commercial Agreements.
U
ndeniably 2020 was one of the toughest years in living memory for many of us. Our entire lives were turned upside down, the way we met changed, the way we socialised is completely different and for some of us our lives may remain a little different. Like all of us, the Charity was significantly impacted by the pandemic. One of the biggest revenue streams for the Charity are industry events and due to ongoing social distancing guidelines, inability to host large scale events and not being able to physically connect the Charity has lost £1.3 million in revenue. The impact of the pandemic has proved the need to re-focus and diversify revenue streams so Charity services are future proofed. To diversify revenue streams and move reliance away from evenʦ to fund EAP services to the industry the Charity has introduced Commercial Agreemenʦ (CA).
Commercial Agreements CA is a legally binding agreement between a corporation and the Electrical Industries Charity which gives a portion of the sales from a product or product range as a donation to the Charity to support sector colleagues. CA means all it takes is the sale of a switch, a cable, a battery or even a service can make a difference to better our industry. CA is not a new concept and charities like Grocery Aid rely on CA with supermarkets to help fund their services to retail workers. You may have seen in catalogues or supermarkets that a percentage of products sold are donated to charities, certain cakes for MacMillan Cancer Support or t-shirts for Comic Relief, it is exactly the same for the Electrical Industries Charity CA. You can select a product line or individual item where for every sale a pre-determined percentage is

donated to support the Electrical Industries Charity. By becoming a CA partner, you are ensuring your organisation, no matter its size, consumer or product range, is fulfilling its corporate social responsibility to nurture and better our sector and its entire supply chain. CA is a simple way to support our industry charity and colleagues while showing your clients you care for them and their environment. Commit to supporting our sector through your day-today business.

FACE TO FACE
Sangamo was acquired as a new business by Scolmore Group in 2018 and added to the ESP product portfolio, but the origins of the company actually date back 100 years. PEW spoke with Neil Baldwin, managing director at ESP about how the company has evolved over the last century.
FACE TO FACE SANGAMO Q
How did you get involved in the industry and with Sangamo?
A. I started work straight from school in export sales for a UK lighting manufacturer and quickly progressed through the ranks to area sales manager, regional sales manager and finally to national sales manager, a position I held for five years. In 2013, I joined the Scolmore Group of Companies as national sales manager for ESP, before being promoted to sales and commercial director and finally taking over the reins as managing director in 2019. Sangamo was acquired by the Scolmore Group in 2018 and its range of specialist time switches and heating controls, now sits under the ESP umbrella.
Q
Sangamo is currently celebrating its 100th year, how has the company evolved and what challenges has it faced over the years? A. Over the years, there has been a significant reduction in the workforce, as new machinery and technology and changing working patterns were introduced. However, there is one product that has stood the test of time. Sangamo has been manufacturing its famous Round Pattern Time Switches for more than 70 years and has sold over 11 million units to date. The installation of these time switches used to be a regular job for many electricians. Despite the electromechanical time switches being less
common today, we still sell thousands of units each year, both as replacements and as brand new installations. We regularly hear from people with Round Pattern Time Switches still going strong after 40 and 50 years. When they eventually need a new switch, they reasonably assume, because of its age, that it might not be possible to get a direct like for like replacement. However, because the original design has never needed to be updated, an RPTS you buy today is completely interchangeable with one bought decades ago.
Q
Is smart technology and building automation changing the way contractors and end users think about switches and controls? A. We are living in a time of rapid technological development, with smart homes and the internet of things seeming to
dominate the sector. With the speed of this change and the huge number of smart devices and products being developed, it can be a challenge for electrical professionals to keep up to date with the latest new products and trends. ESP has continued to invest in the Sangamo range of heating controls and time switches to ensure they harness the latest technologies. Bluetooth-compatible timers were added to the Sangamo DIN Rail Time Switch collection. The range is designed to offer convenience and versatility to the user and broaden the product category reach to a wider potential market, where it will help manage costs in residential, commercial and industrial applications. It uses Bluetooth technology to programme the timer and is compatible with Android and IOS, and applications include lighting, security, heating, ventilation, irrigation and horticulture. As more and more households are seeing the benefit of smart devices to control various elements in the home, so the demand for smart controls that can help with energy saving in particular is on the increase. The introduction of a Wi-Fi thermostat to the Sangamo range offered installers the opportunity to easily add a smart control function to their customers’ home heating. The Choice Wi-Fi Thermostat allows users to control and monitor the room temperature and thermostat activity from anywhere in the world, through the free to download SANGAMO CHOICE APP.

Q
What do you think has the greatest impact on customer purchasing decisions in the controls market? A. There is a growing awareness of the benefits of smart heating controls. UK householders are becoming much more environmentally aware and are using smart heating solutions in order to minimise energy usage and to save money. It is estimated that around 5% of UK homes now have smart heating controls installed. In 2017, it is estimated that around 30% of heating controls sold by value were smart heating controls. This figure is likely to increase to over 45% of heating controls sold by value by 2022. However, the shift to smart heating controls is likely to be gradual and a large number of homeowners are expected to continue with conventional solutions. The primary focus of many suppliers will be key

benefits such as ease of use and convenience for customers.
Q
What does the future hold for Sangamo?
A. We made a significant investment earlier this year to develop the Sangamo range of timers and heating controls. The new range has been totally revamped and showcases brand new products, as well as enhancements and improvements to
existing products and introduces key features that are designed to boost the products’ energy saving properties. The new-look range can be broken down into four main product categories - timer controllers, thermostats, programmable thermostats and programmers – with a total of 15 products making up the comprehensive collection. With energy efficiency top of the agenda for the economy, businesses and householders, a key aim of the revamp was to introduce features that will assist with efficiency and performance and that will ultimately drive down energy usage and costs. We will continue to develop the Sangamo range and will have some exciting new additions to showcase very soon.

FINISHING TOUCHES An awareness of interior trends, bespoke faceplate options, finishes and changes in technology will give you the edge in conversation with your customers. PEW hears from Focus SB on the trends to keep an eye on.
P
opularity of finishes is constantly on the Focus radar, as the company offers in-house expertise to professional electricians, design consultants, building contractors and specifiers via its project support services.
Are trends translating to orders? Looking back at 2016 through to 2018 Focus SB’s product consultants out on the road saw a rise in interest from customers wanting light switch and socket outlet faceplates with sharper corners. Focus SB consultants are always on the lookout to see if the latest interior trends such as the desire for vintage or predictions for ‘maximalism’, the influence of curves from 60s and 70s furniture design or metallic finish details of Art Deco grandeur, translate through to orders. Focus continually assess just how influential trends are on the electrical accessories market and how relevant these might be, enabling the business to best support customers and wholesalers. Confirmed orders placed during 2017/2018 didn’t reflect the anticipated rise

and antique brass were the clear winners, outstripping demand for other finishes, with continued growth in popularity for metallic detailing throughout an interior; whether with a ‘softened chic industrial’ or ‘minimalist’ style. “We’re also seeing an increase in the desire to be able to match faceplate designs and finishes for light switches, dimming and power outlets to smart home and security products such as Focus SB’s panic alarm button and sounder cover plates, and a significant increase in the number of enquiries and orders for keypad faceplates suitable for controls including Lutron, Control4 and Rako for example.”
About face...plate! Anticipated trends for sharper corners took time to filter through, from initial conversation to confirmed orders, with 2019/2021 seeing sales for this style on the increase. Steve Moss comments: “Over the last 12 months approximately 36% of our sales favour sharper corners, with Horizon Square our top selling faceplate style.” Moss continues: “Orders for faceplates finished in polished chrome and nickel increased in popularity in 2017/2018. From autumn 2017 into summer 2018, matt black
Total solution for wholesalers Focus SB often hear from wholesalers that interior designers or other professionals visiting trade counters or showrooms want to match faceplate finishes with either existing installations or specialist products, and availability of products with matching finishes is likely to be difficult or time consuming to source. As Focus SB manufactures and finishes all faceplates and components in-house, its able to offer customers an unrivalled design and finish solution which solves this problem. The recent partnership with Lutron has seen the introduction of a new raw brass faceplate kit and Palladiom Bespoke Metals finishes collection available to order
via Lutron for its HomeWorks QS Wired Palladiom bespoke keypads. Embracing the art of custom finishing, this offering gives control systems installers, specifiers and end users a broader range of options for scene setting, and includes the unusual and new striking finishes from the recently launched ‘Nature Inspired’ collection. As well as 20 standard finishes, there is potential for hundreds of different customised finishes enabling designers to match to other hardware, fixtures and accents, offering continuity of finish throughout an interiors project. Steve Moss says: “Faceplate and switch finish options like satin stainless steel and primed finishes (ready for painting) have been popular for a number of years, and we are seeing increasing demand for finishes like satin nickel, antique brass, various bronze finishes such as our Jordan and chocolate bronzes, matt black and matt white. Our latest offering in collaboration with Lutron as well as the

ability to match our products to multiple third party products gives our customers the edge when it comes to ease of sourcing products that offer continuity of design and finish throughout a project. Wholesalers know that when they order electrical accessories products from Focus SB, they have a straightforward flexible solution from just one manufacturer.” Traditional vs high tech “With many city centre commercial, warehouse and office premises being converted for residential or mixed use, the requirement for high quality monochromatic faceplate finishes in matt white and matt black has increased significantly. Often developers and designers will also try to utilise reclaimed building materials and look to use electrical switches and sockets with ‘distressed’ and unusual finishes,” explains Moss. “Most clients embrace the benefits of energy efficient LED lighting, however many are less than happy to choose high
tech multi-button and touch screen lighting control systems to operate the lighting. These controls in many cases will ‘jar’ in terms of visual appearance with the property’s décor and cause unnecessary complexity, especially if the property is used as a second home. Increasingly touch screen proprietary controls are being replaced (or supplemented) utilising simple ‘push-to-make’ retractive rocker, toggle switches or push buttons for a more traditional appearance. Often these switches will interface with proprietary ‘whole house’ complex control system
installations. Focus SB offers to provide wholesalers with a one-stop shop for traditional products and finishes as well as faceplates for more high-tech solutions.” Moss concludes: “Our typical customers are not impulse buyers, so we collaborate with wholesalers who want to offer a standard collection with the advantage of niche, bespoke ‘non counter’ products.”

ON THE CHARGE Gavin Williams, Sales and Marketing Director at Hamilton Litestat discusses how 13A USB charging sockets and Euro Module charging solutions can keep installers and their customers ahead of the curve.
T
he demand for faster charging of smart devices has led us to new USB standards, and with it an increased requirement for fitting sockets with USB charging capabilities. However, popularity amongst home-owners is now set to rocket because of changing EU regulations. In a move to reduce electrical waste, battery-powered devices will no longer include a standard white block plug-in charger.
demand “forAnUSBincreased charging ports is anticipated, both for commercial and residential properties.
”
Until now, block plug-in chargers have come as standard with rechargeable battery devices. With such an abundance provided, many end up as e-waste. In a move to reduce the environmental impact the European Union is trying to stop supply and move towards a standard USBtype charging connector. One of the first brands to make this change is Apple, which won’t be providing a charging unit with the recently revealed iPhone 12. But what does this mean for homeowners and installers? An increased demand for USB charging ports is anticipated, both for commercial and residential properties. But not all USB connectors were created equal – there are both USB Type A and USB Type C ports. But what’s the difference?

Recap: USB-A vs USB-C The USB connector we’re most familiar with and used in laptops and remote storage devices is the USB Type A, or USB-A. This has a large physical connector and offers charging of up to 2.5W. However, a new standard that enables significantly faster charging is here – the USB Type C, or USB-C. USB-C is physically much smaller and, more importantly, facilitates extremely fast data transfer of up to 10Gb/s and power transfer of 100W for rapid charging. Unlike the early days of mobile phones where each brand had its own unique charging cable, USB-C is set to become standard across new devices. More than 700 technology companies, including Apple, Dell, Google, HP, Intel, Microsoft, and Samsung, have done away with the charging block and adopted the USB-C standard for upcoming products. Demand for USB-C charging ports is set to soar, resulting in significant sales!
Charging ahead Forward-thinking wholesalers/installers looking to support customers and their varied power requirements will need to provide charging options for both legacy devices and the new standard. Hamilton is meeting this demand with combined double switched 2.4A USB sockets that feature both USB-A and USBC charging ports – a now ‘must-have’ in every home. Available in four stylish and versatile plate designs – Hartland, Hartland G2, Hartland CFX and Sheer CFX – and up to eleven finishes, these solutions deliver functionality of the future while ensuring interior style and design aspirations are achieved.

Power up However, faster charging needs more power more rapidly and there are still restrictions on the charging capability from a 13A socket. To deliver the higher rate of charge for high-capacity devices, such as the new MacBook Pro or iPad Pro, a Euro Module is required. Hamilton has recently launched a 45W Type C / 18W Type A, 50x50 Euro Module that is designed to deliver additional power, ensuring powerthirsty devices can charge at full capacity, ensuring customers will never run out of power.

When a device is plugged into the Euro Module it will negotiate the power output. For example, a device with USB-C (labelled PD – Power Delivery) will either accept the full 45 watts on offer or will advise the charger to adjust the current and voltage to enable optimum charging. The same applies to the 18W Type A socket (labelled QC – Quick Charge). The MacBook Pro and iPad Pro are examples of devices that do not charge appropriately from a USB-C port in a standard 13A socket and require a Euro Module to charge effectively. Stylish solutions For wholesalers looking to support customers in the long term, Hamilton’s USB charging products provide stylish transitional solutions. Supporting legacy devices, along with providing the power needed of the latest high-capacity devices, customers will be able to both work, relax and recharge without any worries.

CONTROL T As we continue down the road towards economic recovery, there’s a market hungry for straightforward, affordable control of energy-guzzling appliances, says Timeguard.
he costs of recovery from the shock of the pandemic are coming home to roost, and it’s clear that anything that can reduce energy waste is going to be welcome – especially when it is an affordable and easy solution. Integrated smart home controls are one thing, but few of us have home cinemas and multiple living rooms. Most of your customers just want to be sure that things don’t get left on all day or night - and Timeguard can help you to help them, as it has done for years.
Get a boost What could be simpler therefore for making sure devices like fixed heaters, towel rails, immersion heaters etc., aren’t left running expensively and unnecessarily than the new push-button digital countdown timers from Timeguard. These new digital controls enable users to choose the ideal duration for an appliance to be switched on, and to be able to set it at the push of a single button and to be able to see at a glance how long is left; and add some extra boost or change their mind and switch off if required. They fit the bill perfectly and they are an easy install. Two new members of the Timeguard ‘BoostMaster’ family have recently been introduced - they are rated at 13A (3kW) and will fit into a standard flush or surface mount 25mm back box. There are two hour and four hour versions and the ON time can be chosen in 15 minute increments. The large backlit display then counts down minute by minute. The new devices have also been tested and rated for up to 100W of LED lighting. The big-display BoostMaster models join the original Timeguard electronic boost timers, which have a column of LED lights rather than minute-by-minute digital displays. These are available with or without integral fused spurs. Precision timing Where more precise timing is required, or users want appliances to switch on when

they are out, the FST Fused Spur Timer with fully programmable electronic time control fits the bill perfectly, neatly replacing a standard fused spur which probably already exists adjacent to the appliance you wish to control, so there’s no extra wiring. You can choose between 24-hour models or 7-day programming to cater for people’s different weekday and weekend lifestyle patterns, and there’s a Timeguard boost button to get a little extra heat or power without having to override the programming. Getting control of appliances that you need to come on and off every day can be a major concern and the good news is that adding the accuracy of electronic time control does not have to mean getting to grips with the sequencing of setting timing programmes. While that has become so much easier and more intuitive over the
years, it is still troublesome to some of us, particularly older people. Timeguard even offers the option of an analogue ‘interface’ to electronic time control, with the added benefit of boost timing and interchangeability with old Economy 7 units, making it particularly popular with people who are concerned about managing their use of power at peak times. Time control is always the foundation of energy saving solutions, and ideals like these help installers to provide something that that will have immediate impact on users’ consumption and their bills.

T
he 5th edition of the Home Automation Market Report – UK 2021-2025 is the latest market report from AMA Research, and it addresses the market for home automation products and systems, which has benefited in recent years from the continued growth in the spread of wireless and app-based technologies. According to the report, the home automation market value increased by more than 46% between 2016 and 2019. However, this growth was disrupted during 2020 as the Covid-19 pandemic hit the UK. After 2020, the market is expected to hit double digit growth with a forecasted increase of approximately 47% by 2025. Performance holding up during the Covid19 pandemic is largely attributed to growth in the lower end of the sector and strong growth in online retailing. Home automation products have seen significant growth over the last decade, as housebuilders have started to embrace systems such as lighting and heating controls, with smart plugs also a growing sector. Governmental concern over energy efficiency resulted in policy addressing sustainability issues including the most recent “Future Homes Standard” proposal which had a positive impact on the demand for home automation products such as smart meters and smart grids. Smart heating and specialist systems account for 80% of the home automation market product mix with the remaining 20% for entry level/general.
Greater interest and “purchase of home security systems and devices has been encouraged by the wider availability of smartphone app controlled devices.

ven before lockdown, LEDVANCE have gradually seen an increasing number of workspaces moving to automated lighting systems, with an amazing range of technologies to choose from. Whether controlled using Bluetooth, Zigbee or an app solution, IoT lighting solutions are a welcome alternative to touching shared surfaces after the pandemic, as well as a reliable means of reducing costs and saving energy. A light left on by accident overnight can now be a thing of the past.
visual biological effects of light through changing colour temperatures and illuminance levels. Artificial light that synchronises with our circadian rhythms is proven to make us happier, healthier and more productive. It has been scientifically proven that workspaces which use human centric lighting systems increase employee wellbeing, concentration and performance during the day, improves the quality of sleep at night, and helps reduce sickness.
Wellbeing When considering the benefits of automated lighting systems convenience and cost benefits are most generally noted. However, these systems can have an additional positive impact on wellbeing and productivity, as automated systems provide the valuable opportunity to adapt lighting to our circadian rhythms. The circadian rhythm is our 24-hour body clock that governs natural cycles of activity and rest by managing hormone levels. Humans are known to be heavily influenced by variations in natural light throughout the course of the day. A human oriented lighting concept uses smart controllable LED lighting systems to simulate the characteristics of natural daylight, combining the visual and non-

Light source Light is one of the most important sources for our health, performance and satisfaction. To take full advantage of its benefits, installers need to use IoTcontrolled lighting systems that adapt to circadian rhythms. One such system is the LEDVANCE VIVARES Zigbee and BIOLUX HCL that combine the benefits of a wireless light management system with the health- and performance-enhancing effects of human centric lighting. The system consists of two components: the BIOLUX HCL control unit and the luminaires, BIOLUX HCL Downlight and BIOLUX HCL Panel, to always provide the right light at the right time of day. To adapt the system even more to individual needs, there is also a choice of different lighting mood profiles. For example, the use of BIOLUX HCL luminaires together with BIOLUX HCL control is ideal for single offices and conference rooms with up to 40 lighting components. Whereas VIVARES Zigbee HCL is the perfect solution for open-plan offices with up to 200 lighting components. In addition to the light curve, which automatically simulates the changes in natural daylight, five pre-programmed light profiles can be selected using the control unit: NATURAL mode simulates the natural course of daylight, the BOOST and FOCUS modes support concentration and productivity. RELAX provides comforting

light during breaks and with CREATE mode, brainstorming sessions are encouraged. VIVARES Zigbee Control communicates wirelessly with up to 200 Zigbee-ready devices via Zigbee 3.0. These include luminaires, sensors, pushbutton couplers and a Zigbee DALI converter for the additional integration of DALI-2 luminaires. The system and its components are very easy to configure and commission via the VIVARES portal and can also be maintained remotely using this feature. New software is continually integrated into the system through online updates, but it doesn’t need an internet connection for commissioning and operation. As an option, the system can be connected to a cloud application to generate maintenance and energy consumption reports. Not only is installation simple to achieve, but monitoring the health of the system is just as easy thanks to cloud services. The VIVARES Cloud provides access to the data
of the lighting system from anywhere, allowing facilities managers to make its operation even more efficient, reliable, energy-saving and cost-effective. An intuitive dashboard provides updates on energy consumption, the operating hours of the drivers and the relevant lighting data, among other things. Various filter functions give the option of analysing the data according to requirements. Fully commissioned Commissioning is done through the VIVARES portal with the support of QR codes. The system is configured and commissioned on site after installation of the components, using the VIVARES DALI commissioning app. The free tool is browser-based, so it doesn’t have to be downloaded, and is available for smartphones, tablets (iOS and Android) and PCs. The self-explanatory user guide makes commissioning extremely quick and

easy – thanks to predefined rooms and situations via drag and drop. The system is ideal for modernising existing buildings where rewiring is often not an option, for example when a building is listed or has no suspended ceilings. LEDVANCE offers the necessary components and a wellassorted selection of compatible LED luminaires which allow the system to provide energy-saving lighting in existing buildings, ranging from small lighting projects to complete floor solutions. Even after commission, expanding the system with additional components is a simple task.

Renovation The benefits of VIVARES have been experienced first-hand when the system was recently installed as part of a renovation at the LEDVANCE premises in Molsheim, France. The upgrade aimed to achieve energy savings and a high level of illumination, modernising with simplicity the existing traditional system with state-of-theart technology. The VIVARES Zigbee wireless light management system allowed direct and easy replacement of the luminaires without any structural modification of the building or complex rewiring throughout the installation, causing minimal disruption to employees. All traditional luminaires were replaced with LED lighting in combination with the VIVARES Zigbee. Thanks to the easy to use online configuration tool and the commissioning done intuitively using the product QR codes, a swift installation took place. This system, coupled with presence and light sensors, ensures a significant reduction in energy consumption and offers the creation of maintenance and energy
consumption reports via the VIVARES cloud. To allow full automation of the lighting system, 38 VIVARES Zigbee L/O sensors were installed in the offices, corridors and stairs. The lighting automatically turns on when the first employee arrives and turns off when the premises are unoccupied. Each employee can also select predefined scenes according to the current activity taking place, for example a presentation scene during a meeting. In addition to LEDVANCE’s own needs, the project also meets the requirements of 2019´s tertiary decree and the lighting pollution decree, introduced by the French government to reduce energy
consumption and automatically turn off lights in unoccupied buildings. The monitoring function of the VIVARES Cloud enables detailed reports on energy consumption and an overview of the status of all devices. LEDVANCE employees benefit from the system’s automatic adjustment of the light level, regardless of how much natural light is available, ensuring a constant brightness at all times. Smarter living Technology and lifestyle are becoming increasingly interwoven, as shown by the popularity of smart home devices, fitness and health trackers, for example. IoT lighting is another arm of this trend in, not only driving business and energy efficiencies, but creating solutions that contribute to smarter living.

OVIA DIMMABLE DOWNLIGHTS Ovia has taken its popular Inceptor Omni fire-rated, tricolour, dimmable downlight and made a number of significant improvements to enhance its overall performance. First launched in 2017 as part of Ovia’s premium Inceptor product range, Inceptor Omni has proved a popular choice for installers thanks to the ease of installation and flexibility it offers. It incorporates Ovia’s award-winning Flameguard system technology and is I-joist rated for 30, 60 and 90 minutes. Retaining all the qualities of the original version, the new Omni V2 now boasts a recess depth of just 53mm, thanks to the Flow integrated driver, which means there is no need for an insulation bracket. Omni V2 is supplied with push-fit Flow connectors which feature push-in, low maintenance terminals to offer another time-saving benefit for installers. With the driver now incorporated into the Flow connector, this means that insulation can be laid over the fitting.
Among other key features is a CTA switch (colour temperature adjustable) - a built-in, three position switch which allows for instant change of the colour temperature. The lumen output has been increased, up from 500lm on the original version, to 600lm for Omni V2 and it now offers an improved 60⁰ beam angle with all colour temperature selections. The faceted front lens has also been increased, now measuring 49mm. Omni V2 offers the option for a fixed bezel (IP65 rated) or adjustable bezel (IP54 rated) in one fitting. It comes with the fixed bezel in a white finish as standard. The adjustable version and other finishes – chrome, satin chrome and black - can be bought separately. A simple twist and lock feature means the bezel can be quickly and easily replaced. Omni V2 comes with a five year warranty. A VIDEO OUTLINING THE NEW FEATURES IS AVAILABLE HERE: WWW.RDR.LINK/WB015

IDEAL INDUSTRIES WIRE CONNECTORS Ideal Industries has launched its innovative Gen II Lever Connector. Developed to enable faster, easier and more consistent wire terminations up to 32 Amp, for any installation, including radial and final ring circuits, the new Ideal Industries Gen II Lever Wire Connector range is suitable for joining solid, stranded or flexible connectors. Available in two, three or five port models, the connectors are re-useable and allow the use of multiple wires of different sizes and types within the same lever connector. Cables can be secured in place in seconds, with no screwdriver or crimping required using a simple strip, push, connect action. All Gen II models can be used with solid or rigid stranded cables of between 0.2mm2 and 4.0mm2, while suitable for use with any flexible cable from 0.14mm2 to 4.00mm2. Each connector features a built-in wire strip guide to enable installers to check the correct stripping length and, for solid and stranded cables, once the wire has been stripped, it can simply be pushed in with no need to lift the lever. For flexible wires, meanwhile, the lever is lifted before inserting the conductor and clamping it into place.
All the Ideal Industries Gen II Lever Wire Connectors in the new range have a clear casing to enable easy inspection and there is a check port for testing, enabling full safety and consistency verification at the point of installation. The compact design enables easier fitting in junction boxes and enclosures, which is particularly useful in lighting and access control installations, where multiple conductors often need to come together in a tight space. FORTRESS CIRCUIT PROTECTION
The LINIAN NanoClip is a fire-safe, 18th Edition compliant cable clip designed to fit 2mm and 3mm fibre optic cables, hearing loop cables and any other small diameter cables. It offers a neat and discreet way to fix small cables in domestic, commercial or industrial applications. Due to its 'nano’ size and multiple colour options, the NanoClip is almost invisible against the cabling, offering a tidy, 18th Edition compliant installation. The product has been trialled successfully and approved with two major companies in the fibre cable installation industry, and now LINIAN is bringng the product to the wider market. The NanoClip is ideal for any installation where a faster, safer, simpler and smaller solution is needed.
BG’s range of Fortress circuit protection has been recently improved as a result of contractor feedback. The updated internal wiring configuration makes it a lot easier for the incoming and outgoing cables to be installed. In addition, a quick release DIN rail and offset incomer allows more space around the board to dress the cable. Extra support has been added to the DIN rail to make it easier and more stable when torquing the device terminals. Combi-style screws are used throughout which only requires one screwdriver for installation, with backed-out and retained terminal screws preventing the inconvenience of losing screws. To improve accuracy, an integrated spirit level helps contractors check the board is level. Floating busbars are included which can be cut to size and configured for the installation requirements.

Jordan Reynolds, CPO of EV-comply, discusses the growth and future of the EV charge point sector and addresses some anxieties around EVs.
U
nsurprisingly, we have seen a huge influx of enquiries for EV charge point installations across commercial and domestic sectors and the numbers are definitely not slowing down in 2021. EV purchases in the UK by businesses and fleets in 2020 almost doubled compared to purchases by private buyers, with so-called ‘fleet sales’ making up 53 per cent of all new car registrations last year, while private customers accounted for just 44 per cent of the market. Interestingly, when it comes to electric cars, it is companies and company car drivers that get the majority of incentives. Tax rates have been cut, so electric cars now only incur Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax at one per cent for the 2021/22 financial year. And in 2020/21, drivers didn’t have to pay a penny in company car tax. Both private and corporate customers will have felt the impact of changes to the Government’s Plug-In Car Grant, which was slashed for cars costing £35,000 or more. The grant was also reduced, so eligible cars only saw their prices cut by £2,500, rather than the earlier £3,000. However, UK buyers have been actively making use of the OZEV/EVHS charger grant. The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) is a grant that provides a 75 per cent contribution to the cost of one charge point and its installation. A grant cap is set at £350 (including VAT) per installation. The main requirement is that a person owns, leases, or has ordered a qualifying vehicle
and has dedicated off-street parking at their property. A person may apply for two charge points at the same property if they have two qualifying vehicles. The Commercial/Workplace Charger Scheme (WCS) is a voucher based scheme designed to provide eligible applicants with support towards the upfront costs of the purchase and installation of EV charge points. The contribution is limited to the 75 per cent of purchase and installation costs, up to a maximum of £350 for each socket, with a maximum of 40 across all sites for each applicant. Range anxiety In a poll by the RAC of 7,000 motorists across the UK and Europe, petrol and diesel drivers are travelling around 8,451 miles, while EV drivers accumulate more than 8,825 miles per year. Of the 30 per cent of Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) drivers who
48 OCTOBER 2021 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
said they’re unlikely to consider a fully electric vehicle, the majority (58 per cent) said the biggest concern is that EVs have a shorter driving range. The survey also found 70 per cent of existing EV drivers believe their experience of range is already better than they initially expected. This might help to alleviate fears of range anxiety, as 38 per cent of ICE drivers in Europe believe the biggest pull-factor to switch to electric would be longer ranges. Almost a third (32 per cent) say ease of charging would draw them in, while 30 per cent noted having a better charging infrastructure would persuade them to make the switch. Perhaps surprisingly, the survey also found the majority of respondents (69 per cent) are happy with the current charging infrastructure available. Training The pandemic has helped introduce a new age of online meetings and training webinars (to some people’s annoyance) but the positive outcome has been that a large number of installers have had the ability to access training tools and information from the comfort of their homes or offices at their convenience. Using applications such as EV-comply’s ‘Knowledge Base’ and also OEM Manufacturer Portals & Webinars, charge point installers have been able to quickly access information on EV chargers at the click of a button, even gaining certifications to help further their product offerings to clients. On the contrary, as things are gradually opening up many more 'in

person’ events are also available to the public and stakeholders in the industry, allowing companies to demonstrate their EV products and offerings face to face at events such as Fully Charged, London EV Show and EV Tech Expo. EV revolution There will not be a successful electric car revolution without a revolution in the EV charging network itself. What’s required is more than just extra quantity, the quality of charging will also have to change – making EV charging faster, smarter and easier than it is today. Here are some ways that will help to achieve that: Faster charging: Tesla’s Supercharger is the most common high-speed charging system on the market today charging your vehicle up to 80 per cent capacity in around 30 minutes, but Porsche and BMW are confident they can do better. The two brands have developed a fast-charging prototype that delivers a charge equivalent to 99km in barely three minutes. Although, there’s a big but - the system charges as 450kW, which is more than any EV on the market can take. If and when the system is adapted to the market, it will boost the growth of fast-charging stations – eliminating ‘charging anxiety’.
Although still in its “infancy, wireless charging technology is being put into practice.
”
Smarter charging: Here’s something a petrol or diesel car can’t do: give energy back to the grid. Given the right infrastructure EVs can, with something called ‘V2G’ transfers. This works with bi-directional charging that will theoretically turn your electric car into a battery on wheels, helping to stabilise energy supply as demand rises. Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) transfers work by helping to balance out the National Grid, but are also beneficial for EV operators, who will get compensated for supplying energy back to the grid. In Finland, Virta recently opened the first public bi-directional EV charging plant attached to a solar power plant. Another company using the same technology is Wallbox, which has created the first bi-directional charger for home use, meaning pretty soon your EV battery could become the power source for your home electricity needs. Easier charging: What if we could do away with cables altogether? That would
be the easiest solution – and it’s already here. Wireless charging works via induction, by parking your EV over a charging plate. This could become the key charging technology in the near future, especially as autonomous EVs require fast and easy recharging without human intervention. Although still in its infancy, wireless charging technology is being put into practice. A company called Fortum is developing a charging infrastructure for taxis in Oslo that is both fast and wireless. The aim is to make the city’s entire taxi fleet zero emission by 2023 and their charging infrastructure will help to make that target obtainable. Whilst Indiana’s Department of Transport (INDOT) announced last month a collaboration with Purdue University and German company Magment to test out whether cement with embedded magnetised particles could provide an affordable and wireless road-charging solution. It’s safe to say the EV industry is moving extremely fast, thriving with innovation and passion and it is a sector I’m proud to be a part of.
