LOOKING BACK

Group Editor Richard Bowler pe@hamerville.co.uk

f we could have warned our 2019 selves what to expect in 2020, it is unlikely that any of us would have genuinely believed what was to come. Following major disruption in every sector, government restrictions are easing into a ‘new normal’. And this ‘new normal’ is currently offering some unique sales opportunities for wholesalers.” These are the words of Gavin Williams, Sales & Marketing Director at Hamilton. I think we can all agree that the events taken place this year have been unexpected, to say the least. However, every cloud has a silver lining, so they say! The sliver of shiny outline I am referring to in this case is that there appears to be a renewed focus on refurbishing and retrofitting. With budgets slashed, salaries taking a nosedive and savings not quite what they used to be, many are looking closer to home to improve what they already have. In residential properties, this includes sprucing up interiors due to spending more time than ever indoors, and commercially the hospitality market is looking to improve its offering in order to capitalise on so-called ‘staycations’ in the UK. Social housing will benefit greatly too with a post-Covid rebuild expected in order to provide adequate housing for those most in need. This is likely to provide more energy efficient properties that ensure people are housed in safe, warm and well ventialted environments that also provide cost savings for housing providers over the long term. Looking at this issue, in the smart technology feature, FireAngel explores what the social housing imrovements will mean the fire safety market and how the wholesaler can provide a real time monitoring solution. It looks likely that we are going to be living with this virus for a while, so the ability to provide your customer with solutions that allow for the removal of face to face contact, whilst still providing all the necessary safety checks, will be another retrofitting solution that you can have at your disposal. Elsewhere in this issue we look at the latest trends in the ever growing smart technology world, including more contactless solutions as well as the most up to date smart controls to truly bring houses into the modern era. In the electrical accessories feature we take a look at some of the anti-viral products that are helping fight off infections in schools and hospitals. There is also a more detailed look into the options available from Hamilton for retrofit projects, as mentioned above, including bespoke services that will allow companies to stand out from the crowd and bring in that allimportant business.

NEWS & VIEWS VENTILATION KEY FOR COVID-19 SAFETY

‘ADEQUATE VENTILATION’ TOP PRIORITY A raft of new evidence on airborne transmission of Covid-19 has made ventilation indoors a top priority. In July, over 200 researchers called for the world to take more precautions against the airborne transmission of Covid-19. WHO then published guidance on 9th July which referred to outbreak reports that suggested: “the possibility of aerosol transmission”* of Covid-19 and since then the weight of research has continued to grow. In response to new evidence on airborne transmission and general recognition of long-range aerosol-based transmission of Covid-19, The Federation of European Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Associations (REHVA) has updated its ‘REHVA Covid-19 Guidance Document’, published on 3rd August 2020, citing ventilation as the principal engineering control to help control infection,

thus giving further weight to the vital role ventilation plays. REHVA guidance includes practical recommendations that can be applied to existing buildings at a relatively low cost to reduce the number of

cross-infections indoors. Top of the list is: “Provide adequate ventilation of spaces with outdoor air” again cementing the importance of ventilation. Other ventilation guidance includes: switching ventilation on at nominal speed at least two hours before the building opening time and set it to

lower speed two hours after the building usage time; at nights and weekends, do not switch ventilation off, but keep systems running at a lower speed; and to open windows regularly (even with a mechanical ventilation system). Vent-Axia is committed to improving indoor air quality and public health and has helped in the national response against Covid-19. The company has already supplied ventilation to a wide-range of essential projects, such as the Nightingale Hospital in London, and now is available to offer its expert advice to businesses as they prepare to reopen. There are a number of ventilation options for businesses keen to improve their ventilation and indoor air quality. * ‘Transmission of SARS-COV-2: implications for infection prevention precautions’ published by WHO on 9 July 2020. https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/modes-of-transmissionof-virus-causing-covid-19-implications-for-ipc-precaution-reco mmendations

CONSUMERS WANT ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TECH AdobeStock_maeching

Research conducted by Expleo, the technology partner for innovative companies, found that 43% of British consumers care more about technology that can reduce carbon emissions and remove plastics from the oceans, than space travel or house robots. The findings come as the UK government is under pressure to embrace a ‘green’ recovery post Covid-19. The report, which surveyed 2,000 UK adults, suggested that people prefer “powerful, but boring” tech that solves real-world problems over flashy gadgets or novelties such as home robotics, virtual reality or home entertainment. In tandem with the desire to reduce ocean plastics and carbon emissions, 41% of people specified that they would like to see an advance in renewable energies over the next decade. Smart meters, – which by law, will be in every home come 2024 – were praised by over 80% of people for adding value to their

lives, due to their long-term potential to reduce energy use and CO2 emissions through better energy management. Stephen Magennis, UK Quality MD at Expleo, comments: “Today’s businesses should not ignore this or they could face serious backlash from their consumers. More than ever, they need to focus on

6 OCTOBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

green technology and innovation to positively influence the planet. It is particularly true for businesses in the energy and mobility sectors: reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption, or driving electric vehicles, are top of consumers’ minds.”

CEF, EALING COUNCIL AND FIREANGEL IOT PARTNERSHIP One of Europe’s leading smoke, heat and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm suppliers, FireAngel, has agreed a partnership with Ealing Council in conjunction with CEF to deliver one of the largest IoT roll outs of its kind currently available in the UK. The ground-breaking contract will see the supply of FireAngel’s advanced connected technology, FireAngel Spec Connected, which will cost-effectively provide Ealing Council with a remote monitoring solution that ensures maximum levels of fire and CO detection for its tenants. Ealing Council will oversee the supply and installation of over 122,000 smoke, heat and CO alarms across an initial 14,000 of 17,000 properties located throughout West London, whilst also benefitting from FireAngel’s patented Predict technology, which will highlight trends and high-risk patterns of behaviour to prompt earlier intervention before an actual fire event. The new agreement will revolutionise the way in which Ealing Council monitors and manages its entire housing stock, eliminating the requirement for gaining physical access to a property, as the entire required device data is transmitted wirelessly in real time via a secure cloud network. Historically, Ealing Council has specified an LD3 Category, mains-powered system from another supplier, which will be replaced with FireAngel’s advanced Specification Range, upgrading the level of protection provided throughout each property to an LD1 Category specification, in accordance with BS 5839-6. As part of Ealing Council’s continuous commitment to reviewing and improving the levels of protection it provides its tenants, whilst also acting in line with the release of the Draft Building Safety Bill, councillors reviewed its Fire Safety Policy to ensure fire safety equity for all tenants.

SPECIAL REPORT

TAKE

STOCK Here, Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita, explains why electrical wholesalers should always look to stock cordless power tools with brushless motors and how they can benefit customers.

A

ccording to recent research, tradespeople are busier than ever. Despite the coronavirus lockdown and social distancing measures in place, more than half reported the same or increased levels of business compared to this time last year and one in three said they are busier than expected. Although this is great news for the industry, the increase in workload means that electricians have to be prepared to tackle a wide range of jobs quickly and efficiently. To do this, it is important for them to have a selection of high-quality, user-friendly tools available in the van – and wholesalers therefore need to be prepared to advise customers on the best tools for the job and ensure that these products are always in stock. Go cordless When speaking to customers about the type of power tools they need, the first thing to consider is whether the machine is suitable for working efficiently and freely, even in those awkward or hard-to-reach areas. As there is no power lead, cordless models offer maximum freedom to move around the work area and enable operators to easily position themselves correctly and safely – with no trailing cables, there are also no trip hazards. The set up time for cordless machines is also minimal – charged tools can be used straight from the van without the need to locate power sockets or transformers, increasing operator efficiency.

The leading cordless models of today are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which can hold high levels of energy and as a result will work for long periods of time without the need to recharge them – therefore improving on-site productivity. These batteries do not need to be drained down before re-charging, so operators can charge the batteries at their convenience. When selecting which cordless machines to stock, look for models that feature batteries with LED charge indicators, as this will make it easy for customers to keep track of how much charge each battery has between use. It is also important to explain to customers that leading manufacturers like Makita have optimised the charging process to protect the batteries from damage and reduce charge times to be the best in the industry. For example, Makita has designed its lithium-ion (LXT and XGT) batteries to be able to communicate with the charger. Using CPU, the charger can identify any issues with the battery. Makita has also extended this intelligent technology into the product itself, so the battery and tool are protected during use. Brushless technology The type of motor included within the tool should also be considered. Machines with a brushless motor require minimal maintenance, primarily because there are no brushes within the motor causing friction. When friction occurs, it can result in wear

10 OCTOBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

and tear and the need for replacement parts – this is not the case with a brushless motor. Reduced friction also means no energy is lost through heat production, making brushless machines more energy efficient. These tools can produce more torque per weight, which means less power is required to achieve the same result. This can extend run times up to 50% on each battery charge. Brushless motors are also smaller in comparison to brushed alternatives, which means that tools are more compact and lighter, but still deliver the high power needed. A powerful solution Recent advancements in battery technology mean that there are now cordless machines available on the market that can offer power and performance comparable to mains powered or petrol engine machines – which is ideal for customers in need of tools for highdemand applications. For example, Makita’s new XGT 40V Max range delivers the high-power needed, without compromising on battery run times and charge times. XGT batteries will charge in just 28-45 minutes and 18V LXT batteries can be charged in 22-55 minutes, depending on capacity. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

SPECIAL REPORT

OUT OF OFFICE Stephen Roberts from office power, connectivity and ergonomics specialist, CMD, discusses the opportunities for electrical wholesalers as companies equip their teams to make working from home a permanent solution.

O

ne of the knock-on effects of the Covid-19 pandemic has been to create the biggest working from home experiment the world has ever seen. Companies that had previously avoided allowing their employees to work from home have discovered that their preconceptions on the matter were wide of the mark. In fact, for many, enabling teams to work from home has led to increased productivity as commute time becomes work time, technology enables wider collaboration and improved flexibility in the working day delivers enhanced motivation and wellbeing. With lockdown eased and teams returning to offices, it is easy to assume that the world will tip back into life as we knew it, and that homeworking will, once again, be the preserve of the privileged few. The reality, however, is very different, which creates an opportunity for the electrical wholesale sector to generate sales from products targeted specifically at a dynamic homeworking market. Returning to work – but not as they knew it Firstly, employers are facing the challenge of reconfiguring their existing office spaces to accommodate their team while providing a safe, socially-distanced workplace. For office environments that were operating on a high-density model before the pandemic, this is a circle that’s difficult to square.

Secondly, many office workers that had a taste of working from home during lockdown are now reluctant to return to the old routines of long commutes and tiresome presenteeism. While some may miss the socialisation and face to face collaboration of the office environment, many will be keen to continue working from home some or all of the time, where they can avoid the interruptions of the office and work around other commitments. Finally, employers have learned that, rather than providing an opportunity for employees to put their feet up and relax, working from home has been proven during lockdown to enhance productivity and facilitate the work/life balance that their teams have yearned for. No longer shackled by the 9 to 5, professionals can adopt routines that work for them, which has distinct advantages for companies that operate across time zones, as well as boosting morale, motivation and productivity. Long term challenge? The challenge of transferring homeworking into viable workplace policy, rather than emergency response, is only just beginning. Moreover, it is potentially complex, as it involves reconfiguring the office in line with social distancing best requirements. During the pandemic, homeworkers have largely fallen into one of two groups: those with a dedicated space at home to use as an office, and those who have had to carve out a workspace on a daily basis,

12 OCTOBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

often while factoring in partners, children or housemates sharing the same environment. If employers are going to adopt a homeworking/partial homeworking model going forward, they have a duty of care to ensure that members of staff in either of these scenarios have a home workplace environment that supports their physical and mental health and wellbeing. This means considering ergonomics, desktop facilities and connectivity. Packages tailored for dedicated home offices or makeshift workstations, which can be put in place on a plug and play basis, will provide the ideal opportunity for electrical wholesalers to respond to employers’ needs. Enhancing the dedicated home office Whether it is an office, a spare bedroom or a garden room, if a worker has a space where the desk is permanently set up for work, it can be interpreted as a permanent workspace. However, unlike in the office, many of those working from home in this scenario will not have an appropriate task chair or monitor arm. They may also not have access to conveniently located or sufficient power sockets and charge points, which can lead to a jumble of wires and extension leads that are potentially hazardous to both their health and safety and their company’s IT assets. Along with the right chair, companies will be looking for electrical solutions to address this. Packages can include a fixed monitor arm to enable height-adjustable dual screen working and a network

012_PEW_OCT20_Layout 1 21/09/2020 13:55 Page 13

SPECIAL REPORT

extender to improve the data signal for the improved connection required for online meetings and VPN access to the company server. A unit such as the CMD Network Extender, which combines home office power, USB charging and data network extension in a single device, is ideal because it saves space and provides everything the homeworker needs in one location. This simple plug and play solution enables electrical wholesalers to offer a product that could be transformative for companies with employees working from home. Creating the flexible remote office For those without a dedicated office, working from home during lockdown has been extra challenging. They may have had to share their home’s only table with housemates, a partner or home schooling regimes, packing everything away at the end of each day to allow the space to be re-purposed for leisure time. CMD has developed a package of equipment specifically designed for makeshift workstations, enabling this group to make longer term homeworking a viable choice by allowing them to use a more ergonomic, comfortable set up that packs away neatly when not in use. For example, the lightweight CMD monitor arm for single or dual screens, enables the screen to be raised to the optimum height for the user, without being permanently attached to the desk or table. Designed to be quick and easy to install it allows the use of a second screen when working from a laptop. One of the issues with working from a laptop is ergonomics, with poor screen position often resulting in poor posture which can result in discomfort while working along with aches and pains. A simple solution, such as CMD’s portable laptop stand, can address this by allowing the user to set the screen height to suit their viewline. The issues around power points and data connection also affect this group, and the same principles apply. CMD’s Inca desktop power supply module is suitable for use on a kitchen table, with sockets in multiple directions along with USB points. Used in conjunction with a network extender, this provides a portable, flexible approach to working from anywhere. Rising to the challenge Covid-19 has made homeworking possible for both businesses and individuals. The change in working cultures means that electrical wholesalers can benefit from selling a whole category of electrical products designed specifically for homeworking. CMD has taken a lead in understanding the challenges of different homeworking scenarios resulting in off-the-shelf solutions that electric wholesalers can offer as a complete package to optimise this opportunity. GOING ANTI-VIRAL Infection control is one of the biggest challenges facing the healthcare sector. Anyone operating within and supplying to this sector is required to work with products that meet the demands for hygiene and safety, and that includes electrical products. Here we look at the latest products from Scolmore, designed to protect users.

L

ight switches, dimmers and sockets have one of the highest touch rates in any environment, so are likely to hold a significant number of microbes on their surfaces. Whilst regular and rigorous cleaning of these settings is essential, the use of products with anti-viral and antimicrobial properties will also have a part to play to help inhibit the spread of infection. Test approved With an increasing emphasis on building cleanliness, Scolmore has taken a further step to ensure that its wiring accessory products offer enhanced hygiene properties. The company’s popular Mode, Mode Part M and Polar plates have now been independently tested and have shown to have anti-viral properties against enveloped and non-enveloped viruses. After a contact period of four hours, all tested plates were shown to have a 99.9% kill off rate against enveloped viruses and a 92% kill off rate against non-enveloped viruses. This new anti-viral testing is in addition to the anti-bacterial testing already carried out. Mode, Mode Part M and Polar are all manufactured using Urea Formaldehyde, which has similar inherent properties to antimicrobial additives that inhibit the growth of infectious diseases. When independently tested, all products achieved a 99.99% kill

a contact period “of After four hours, all tested plates were shown to have a 99.9% kill off rate against enveloped viruses and a 92% kill off rate against non-enveloped viruses.

off rate across all four types of the strains of bacteria – MRSA, E-Coli, Salmonella and Klebsiella Pneumonia. Style and protection Mode is a range of contemporary, white wiring accessories and is the company’s best-selling wiring accessories collection to date. The range was developed as a high quality, flexible and modern solution for virtually any domestic wiring requirement. The smooth lines of the accessory plate will fit easily into traditional and contemporary designs alike. Mode Part M is a range of visually contrasting wiring accessories, in anthracite grey, that comply with current Building

Regulations Part M. Polar is a premium range of bright white electrical accessories, which was developed to meet the demand for a different accessory colour. As with Mode, the Polar range is modular in design and allows installers unprecedented flexibility in creating dedicated wiring solutions. ELECTRICAL ACCESSORIES

ESSENTIALS In this review George Robertson, a trusted 'product tester' for our sister title PE, gets acquainted with the Essentials range of switches and sockets from MK Electric.

A

s a brand, MK has always been considered the ‘gold standard’ of wiring devices, so when I was offered the chance to try out the MK Essentials range I didn't need much convincing. I'm pleased to say I wasn’t disappointed. MK Essentials is a range of switches and sockets that feature the usual hallmarks of MK quality and flair but are designed for those jobs where a smaller budget might be available. This has resulted in a well-designed range of white, curved, screwless accessories that honestly wouldn't look out of place anywhere you fit them.

Multi-purpose The range has everything you might need: single and double switched or unswitched socket outlets, (with or without USB ports); cooker controls (single or double, with or without neon indicators); LED dimmers; round pin switch-socket and unswitched socket outlets; and a range of grid plus and euro modules. I was particularly taken with the switches in both wide rocker and small rocker types, which offer up to four gang, two-way switches on a single back box plate. More to the point, they're all quick, easy and a delight to fit. The cover plate simply flicks off the back unit but, once in place, this is held firmly in position by four robust pins, while the screw holes on the main body allow enough lateral movement to get the units positioned correctly every time.

16 OCTOBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

MK may have designed these as a 'budget' range but they neither look nor feel that way when you’re fitting them. If I have one small gripe, it’s that MK didn’t provide me with all the units necessary to replace the switches and sockets that my other half suddenly decided needed to be changed at home after she'd seen the quality of the ones I fitted! Value Having checked the pricing point of the Essentials range at my local suppliers, I was pleasantly surprised. Anyone who knows me well will realise this isn't something I'd say in jest when it comes to spending my own money. I'd seriously recommend that other electricians have a look at the Essentials collection, as they could easily become your 'go to' accessory range for the future. At the very least you’ll have the confidence that everything you fit will not only match correctly and look good, but it will also have that MK cachet behind it. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

MAKE DO AND…

REFURBISH An increase in retrofit and refurbishment projects is providing wholesalers with a boost in sales opportunities. PEW discusses this with Gavin Williams, Sales & Marketing Director at Hamilton.

I

f we could have warned our 2019 selves what to expect in 2020, it is unlikely that any of us would have genuinely believed what was to come. Following major disruption in every sector, government restrictions are easing into a ‘new normal’. And this ‘new normal’ is currently offering some unique sales opportunities for wholesalers. We’ve been very lucky to continue operating and supporting our customers during these extremely challenging times. With much of our manufacturing taking place at our headquarters in Bristol, we are agile in our operations and were able to make quick changes to operate safely and carry on our supply and distribution of products. This has been fortunate as we’ve seen an increase in retrofit and refurbishment products that have positively impacted demand. Commercially, the hospitality sector is renovating guestrooms and restaurants, and private owners are upgrading rental properties that are advertised on sites such as Airbnb in order to capitalise on the increase in UK holiday bookings. While times are still challenging, there is an opportunity for wholesalers to push simple changes that can make a big difference.

Design at the Hart-land Hamilton’s Hartland range has long been a favourite of installers due to it being easy to fit in all its configurations. But it’s also a favourite with interior designers too for its minimalist, sleek and stylish design. It is available in different options to cover all project requirements, including the standard Box Fix design, while the CFX option has concealed fixings for a sleek, streamline finish without visible screws. Both are available in 13 finishes, including the ontrend and sought-after Matt Black, and popular Brass and Bronze finishes. And if a customer is seeking a punchier finish, Hartland Colours CFX comes in a robust plastic with Red, Black and White plate finish options. It delivers the same sleek look but at a lower price to the metal options.

Same look, more cost-efficient The Hartland range has proven so popular that Hamilton has value-engineered the design to help support clients that want to make their budget work harder. The company has developed the Hartland G2 screwless ‘Push-To-Fit’ plate. The plate is produced from pressed metal rather than cast, with this manufacturing method contributing to an overall cost saving without compromising on either the quality or finish, so it delivers a screwless look at a box-fix price. Once the back plate is wired, the front plate can be easily removed for walls to be repainted or papered, then the plate simply pushes back into position. It’s therefore a great option for areas of the home or hotel that gets a high level of use and need regular refreshes, such as entrance halls or corridors. It is available in 10 on-trend finishes, including metallics Polished Brass, Satin Brass and Etrium Bronze, along with Matt White and Matt Black that have seen a recent boost in popularity. Inserts are available in White, Black and New Quartz Grey. In terms of functionality, a grid option is also available with pre-engraved 20A double pole switches, EuroFix options, plus double

sockets also equipped with two 2.4A USB outlets as standard, plus 4.8A Type A & C output connectors for charging phones and tablets. The back of the socket is coloured Bright Yellow making it extremely easy for contractors to see colour coded terminals. Double impact If the Hartland design doesn’t quite suit the look and feel your customer is after, Hamilton has a vast range of design options. Making a big design impact currently is the recently introduced Wide Rocker Switches. A design trend that has been influenced by the Asian market, these extra wide switches are in demand for both residential and high-end hotel projects. The switches are available across five Linea CFX collections – Duo CFX, Georgian CFX, Perlina CFX, Rondo CFX and Scala CFX – as well as Hartland CFX and Sheer CFX. Available in 12 metallic finishes, including popular Bronzes and Brasses, as well as Gloss White, the Wide Rocker Switch wiring accessories cater for all interior design schemes as well as configuration requirements, including 1, 2 and 3-gang switches, 1-gang Push-ToMake (PTM), Double Pole and Intermediate Wide Rockers.

For those that need more space, or to comprehensively reconfigure rooms, a full refurbishment may be on the cards. Blend in or stand out By simply providing an industry standard colour reference code to suit the décor, Hamilton will pre-paint the wiring accessories to be a perfect colour match with a flawless finish. This can be a colour that exactly matches the wall, or a contrasting colour that complements the room’s soft furnishings. Delivered ready to fit, it is then simply a case of installation. Alternatively, the plates can be primed and ready to paint on site if that’s preferred. There needn’t be any fiddly painting on site – we take the hassle and pain out of this desirable finish by painting the accessories at our HQ in Bristol and providing them all ready to go, as if they were an off-the-shelf solution.

meets the needs of a project. We pride ourselves on going the extra mile to provide the perfect solution for our clients. One such client is three-Michelin-star ‘restaurant with rooms’, The Waterside Inn, which is under the leadership of Chef Patron Alain Roux and located in Bray, Berkshire. A recent refurbishment overseen by in-house designer Laura Roux utilised Hamilton’s Perception CFX designer wiring accessories to ensure that it is the décor that makes an impact. This high-quality transparent plate design with concealed fixings has snap-on clear front plates to allow for a section of wallpaper to be inserted. It means that the plate discreetly blends into the wall and the switch plates and sockets enhance rather than detract from the impact of the décor. Support you can rely on In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hamilton has restructured its sales force to provide the best possible service that’s befitting of new working practices and requirements. he growing interest in ‘smart devices’ has definitely skyrocketed in the past decade. More and more people are using smart phones, discovering the benefits of app-controlled technology and enjoying the advantages of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when upgrading their homes and in the workplace. As millennials come of age and have their own families, we now have two generations of ‘digital natives’ who have grownup with technology and therefore demand a certain level of comfort and immediacy from their devices, which is set only to accelerate as the trend towards increased personalization continues within the home, whether it is a new build or renovation.

Single network As more and more consumers are becoming better informed about smart home technology, we are finding that there is growing interest in how a variety of devices can share one single, simple network (known as a KNX system) and work together as required. This means that integrators can benefit from an easy wireless installation which the homeowner can adapt in the future.

Mark Booth, Managing Director at Gira UK, explains how the company is meeting the latest demand for smart technology with a variety of different solutions. With KNX, the homeowner has the Socially distanced technology freedom to add and subtract to the system We can already see that voice-activated as the family’s needs change, and controls and pre-set scenes have a part to everything from lighting to heating and air play in avoiding multi-user contact on conditioning can be tailored to control panels and devices in the kitchen the individual’s needs. and living areas. screen, if you’re unable to see them in person, or at another location via the Gira app. I feel that there is definitely scope for more technological communications which help people feel part of a community so that they are ‘alone together’. Gira room temperature controller can be integrated with the existing heating system to ensure that the bathroom is at an ambient temperature to keep users warm as well as reducing the potential for damp conditions to lead to mould and mildew. Alongside these practicalities, there’s extra support for carers and families, as installing the Gira nurse call system will call for help in an emergency simply by pressing a button or operating a pull cord. There can be a tendency for the bathroom to become overly clinical, but installing the latest technology can certainly overcome this, especially as the number of bathrooms in a property is now becoming as important as the number of bedrooms, as well as being in the frontline for maintaining hygiene and wellness post-Covid. And, the good news is that with the KNX system, we can retrofit so there is no intrusive electrical work going through the walls.

Multi generation For the grey market, this might mean an extra emphasis on clearly configured controls and call systems and brighter lighting and for a young family – ensuring that controls can be child-proofed would make sense. The sheer variety of switches and components available is triggering all sorts of ideas in terms of future integration. The smart home possibilities that we see today are just the beginning in terms of having highly-individualised homes, which know exactly what we like and when we like it. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

HOME COMFORTS With working from home likely to be the new normal for many people for the foreseeable future, Marie Parry, Group Marketing Director at Scolmore Group, looks at how wholesalers can offer smart technology to enhance new ‘office’ environments.

I

t may have started out with the requisitioning of a corner of the kitchen table, but as lockdown continued, millions in the UK have found themselves adapting to a new working from home regime. With restrictions being lifted and people starting to make their way back into office environments, it is likely that for many, working from home will become a new, regular pattern in their working week. Having made do with their temporary situations while uncertainty on the return to work prevailed, many are now assessing how they can make their living space work better to accommodate their new long term working requirements. The biggest hurdle for many, at a time when job security and financial constraints are a major worry, will be the perceived expense of making any significant changes. The decision to convert a spare bedroom or the corner of a room, for example, may simply require additional sockets to be added to cope with the plethora of equipment required – laptops, monitors, routers, boosters, lamps etc. Taking control The ability to control lighting will have appeal from an energy saving point of view, as well as convenience, and this can be

competitively priced and has been designed with installers in mind. Critical information is stored within the Smart Box, not the phone, making it easy if a phone needs to be upgraded or other users added – without affecting the settings. With all the settings stored on the Smart Box, there is no need to programme and install all the elements onto each individual phone. Scolmore’s app for the Click Smart range has the added benefit of ‘cloud function’.

easily and relatively cheaply addressed with a smart system which can be operated from a smart phone. The Click Smart Box and app has been designed with simplicity in mind and just requires broadband connection. It can be easily integrated into a new or existing Click Smart installation and provides an easy, quick and relatively inexpensive way to adapt and update a home to provide extra security, energy saving, comfort and control. Installation is simple and flexible, and because it requires no additional cables or wall cutting it means minimum disruption for householders. Comprising three basic components, Click Smart Box, RF Receivers and a Smart Phone, the system is a high end, professional one which is very

Peace of mind In terms of security, a simple Wi-Fi, or ‘smart’ doorbell like ESP’s Aperta Wi-Fi door station will allow users to view and talk to visitors at their home without having to make regular, disruptive trips to the front door. From a smart phone or tablet and using the free ESP app, they can easily see who is at the door or gate, engage in twoway communication and allow remote access if desired. The Wi-Fi Door Station comes in a kit form containing everything required for the installer to quickly and simply get the system up and running. Part of the working from home phenomena is the need to have various items of valuable equipment on the premises, which is giving rise to concern over potential break ins and thefts.

system for those homeowners looking for a premium quality CCTV system that is very competitively priced. These 4-channel, 1080p CCTV Kits are packed with features, but come with an affordable price tag, making them ideal entry level products. They are designed with ease of set up as a key feature, including the option for remote monitoring via smartphone or tablet, using ESP’s specially developed RekorHD APP. So whether they are working from home or in the office, users are able to keep an eye on their premises. There are 2 and 4 camera kits available and they include a 4channel DVR, premium quality surveillance hard drive, cameras, camera cables, system power supply, mouse and HDMI cable. The menu is designed to be very user-friendly and is navigated via mouse control, making it an easy sell to customers. For those customers willing to invest in a more sophisticated security solution, or are keen to upgrade on old system, contractors can recommend ESP’s HDView range of 4 Megapixel CCTV systems. These offer an

upgrade from 1080p (2 Megapixel) to 4MP to give users a higher density of pixels to produce a super high definition image clarity. The HDview 4MP range was developed to bring to market a complete collection of superior quality, high end CCTV products that offer greatly improved image specification, while also benefitting from a contemporary look that is being demanded by more and more end users. At the top end of the market for domestic CCTV solutions that homeowners may consider is the latest IP, POE, CCTV technology. This is designed to offer superior, reliable and straightforward installation solutions. ESP’s REKOR IP 2 Megapixel range features POE (Power-OverEthernet) which enables the camera and

power feed to be wired in Cat5e cable up to 100 metres without the need for additional power. A single Ethernet cable provides both the power and the HD digital feed, with just one cable per camera and multiple cameras can be installed anywhere on the network that the NVR is connected to. Working from home – the new normal According to the ONS, of the 32.6 million people in the workforce, only 1.7 million people in the UK worked from home prior to the coronavirus pandemic. The forced social distancing measures, implemented to curb the spread of the virus, have seen an estimated 20 million people relocating to home offices. Wholesalers are in a prime position to help drive the growth of smart solutions that will facilitate the creation of new home working environments. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

A

s engineers now work to overcome the backlog of repairs and complete a buildup of necessary maintenance checks in social housing, concerns are focused on ensuring the safety and wellbeing of both themselves and residents to mitigate any potential spread of the virus. So, how can electrical wholesalers support social housing providers in overcoming access and maintenance issues, whilst enabling them to successfully futureproof installations and gain understanding of the levels of fire risk within their portfolio? In short, by supplying smoke, heat and CO alarms that support remote real time monitoring. Remote monitoring capabilities are not only offering a wide range of benefits for existing social housing portfolios, they are also transforming the future of fire safety and paving the way for a new generation of social housing digital developments that place IoT at the core of their construction. The activation of a connected, cloudbased gateway allows instant, remote, real time monitoring of Smart RF smoke, heat and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms that enables providers to achieve full

Here Nick Rutter, Chief Product Officer at FireAngel, explores how electrical wholesalers can support the social housing sector in overcoming the issues posed by failing to gain physical access to a property. traceability, audit and compliance management across an entire housing portfolio by simplifying the monitoring of alarm networks across every property. Through a Connected System featuring FireAngel Predict technology, providers can further futureproof and enhance their fire and CO protection by receiving an overview of fire risk across the entire property portfolio to help pinpoint increasing risk levels and enhance overall efficiency. This subsequently supports a long-term reduction in overheads as assets are applied in the most efficient way. Instant access Through the use of a connected gateway, providers can also activate instant access to vital information including alarm diagnostics for every alarm across the network to ensure 24/7 legislative compliance, whilst the unique, patented Predict technology automatically provides the ability to pinpoint and manage risk remotely. Properties are also futureproofed against potential regulatory changes as the system offers the ability to be adapted at a later date. The ability to view the performance of each alarm in real time also aids proactive asset maintenance.

24 OCTOBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

The system also delivers complete freedom to accommodate a hybrid network, which supports the specification of mains and battery powered alarms in the same property. This optimises the utilisation of existing wiring for mains alarms, while the ease of installation of battery powered alarms offers cost and resource savings by reducing the amount of time a contractor spends inside the property. As connected technology continues to pave the way for fire safety, electrical wholesalers can support not only social housing providers, but the wider industry, in benefitting from IOT and connected fire safety technologies. Vital asset Latest research by the Local Government Association (LGA) found that over 100,000 affordable homes will need to be constructed each year as part of the national recovery from the virus and the ‘new generation’ of social housing aims to provide residents with affordable, high quality homes that are fit for purpose. Electrical wholesalers here play the role of facilitator, enabling the social housing sector to take an alternative approach to the fire safety installed within future properties through the procurement of intelligent, connected solutions. This can be achieved by utilising a connected fire safety system that features patented Predict technology.

PRODUCTS IN PRACTICE

LOVED AND LISTED Listed buildings can present challenges when retrofitting but Gira found a number of solutions on a recent project, bringing modern technology to a classic home.

T

he above property was brought into the 2020s with the latest cutting-edge technology by Jo Geuskens, from electrical installation contractor SPIE, whilst preserving original features such as the elaborate plasterwork and the integrity of the walls. Meeting the homeowner’s desire for a luxurious, intuitive home without installing any additional wiring meant that the Gira eNet SMART HOME was the ideal solution – as the system uses radio signals to communicate in combination with intelligent switches which could be installed throughout the property with ease. Creating a mood As automated lighting is becoming ever more desirable in the modern home, the home owners wanted to make the most of their options with individual sport lights in tandem with classic ceiling lights and exterior lighting to enhance the indoor/outdoor living experience. Ensuring the ultimate in user control, the occupants have all sort of options such as clearlylabelled switches and touch panels throughout the house. And as an added bonus, they can use the Gira eNet SMART HOME app on their tablets and smart phones when they are out and about so they can ‘have their home in their pocket’ with absolute data security.

Creating the right ambience in the home doesn’t end with finding designer lighting and accessories, adding optimum controls and functions increases comfort and personalisation – something becoming ever more important. For example, having the ability to close the curtains and adjust interior lighting to a comfortable level at the tap of a finger gives the smart home a bank of user preferences to save as ‘scenes’ which can be adjusted for entertaining at home, watching films or studying. The latest upgrades to the eNet SMART HOME system mean that end users can operate lights and blinds as well as call up previously defined scenes via voice control using Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Switching style The Gira switches used throughout the property are from the E2 Design Line range and can be positioned anywhere including bathrooms and bedrooms. The durable, easy-care switches work well with the minimalist design of the 4-storey house and its modern décor. Customised, labelled multiple switches were mainly used and were mounted easily onto the exposed brick surfaces and wooden beams. The beauty of the E2 range is that it can offer over 300 functions, so there will be solutions or configurations to

accommodate the needs of the most exacting households and the Gira inscription service in a clear and legible font means everyone in the house and their guests will know which button does what – for added convenience. Mark Booth, Managing Director, Gira UK says: “As a company, we are really proud that we can help developers, installers and end users alike with systems which can be easily retro-fitted to enhance lifestyles in older, characterful properties. Europe is rich in architecture and design, and it is so exciting to bring the best of new innovations to older buildings which are cherished by their owners. We want to bring the benefits of smart home technology to every household in the UK, so that people can see how time, money and energy can be saved when their surroundings are in ‘tune’ with their needs. As the UK property market recovers following lockdown, we are committed to supporting our installers and partners into 2021 and beyond with dedicated training packages and tailored resources so that they can take advantage of the growing consumer demand for intelligent home solutions.” FOR FURTHER INFORMATION
