move to a greener, cleaner and less carbon fuel reliant world is something that has been on the agenda for many businesses and consumers alike. Large chunks of marketing budgets are thrown at promoting a ‘green’ or ‘clean’ message and the banning of the sale of pure combustion engines by 2030 shows a commitment to that cause by the Government. So could someone please explain to me why we find ourselves lamenting another poorly executed and ill judged ‘green scheme’? Many of you will remember the green deal to insulate homes launched in 2013 that came to an abrupt halt in 2015 following a lack of uptake. It seems like the lessons learned from this were in fact not learned at all, or they were, then very quickly forgotten about. I spoke about the ‘build back better’ message that was excitedly delivered during the middle of last year, with a lot of emphasis on the construction industry boosting the economic recovery after months of being decimated by the pandemic. So, the first reduction of funding to the Green Homes Grant and the eventual withdrawal of the scheme altogether was rather puzzling to me. The simple answer to why this has happened is that the numbers simply don’t add up, and it’s true they don’t make very good reading. The scheme set up in September last year had only issued 28,000 vouchers by the end of February with only 5,800 energy efficiency measures installed, according to a recent report from the Guardian. Builders complained of excessive red tape while households found the loans difficult to access. A select committee of MPs called it: “botched [in] implementation … the administration seems nothing short of disastrous.” A damning assessment indeed. Of course I thought of the role the wholesaler could play in the delivery of the many areas of the built environment to the homeowner and businesses trying to reduce their carbon footprint. With the ending of this scheme go these opportunities along with the potential 10s of thousands of jobs that could have been generated. The scrapping of the initiative has come under fire from the Federation of Master Builders too, describing the omission of a long term plan to make homes greener as harming recovery. Still, there are many ways in which we can still have an impact on delivering a greener future, and there are still many ways to do that in the electrical wholesale industry. Just because of one (or two) failed schemes along the way, doesn’t mean that you can’t play your part in helping deliver a cleaner world of tomorrow. In the issue we take a look at three very different ways of reducing the carbon footprint we leave on this planet, with a focus at the latest adaptable electric vehicle charging technology from CTEK, sustainable workwear from Snickers and an energy efficient lighting refit on a warehouse from Ovia. You can also look at helping improve yours and your team’s knowledge on renewable technology with the latest quiz from the EDA sampled from its Product Knowledge Modules. Have a great month and enjoy the issue.

NEWS & VIEWS NET ZERO TARGETS HAMPERED
FMB CHALLENGES GREEN HOMES GRANT RETHINK The Government’s decision to cancel the Green Homes Grant scheme will damage the country’s progress towards net zero targets, says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB). Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, comments: “The misguided scrapping of the Green Homes Grant scheme sends entirely the wrong message to consumers and builders, and will harm the UK’s desire to be seen as a global leader in tackling climate change.” Berry continues: “Flaws with the scheme should have been addressed, in consultation with industry, with a commitment to training. Instead we have

another example of a stop-go green initiative that undermines, rather than creates, certainly for both the public and installers. The Government needs to be
more ambitious in its thinking and set out a long-term plan to upgrade our existing homes to make them greener and more energy efficient. A national retrofit strategy would address this need and allow the Government to be taken seriously as well as regain the trust of industry.” Berry concludes: “Small, local builders who have spent thousands of pounds becoming eligible for work under the scheme rightly feel let down and angry. Without these workers on the Government’s side, we will fail to retrofit our 28 million existing homes, missing the opportunities for green growth, new jobs, and to level up.”

CHARITY HELPING HAND
The Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) recently supported a retired wholesaler whose mother was battling with dementia. Christine approached the EIC when her mother, aged 83, began to display signs of dementia. Christine had worked for a major wholesaler for over a decade when she was forced to retire early at the age of 62 to care for her mother Marie. Marie has been living with Christine for more than three years, but her health had begun to decline. Marie’s behaviour had become erratic and her personality was changing day-to-day. She was verbally and physically abusive to Christine and she suffered several falls within their home. Christine contacted the Electrical Industries Charity, who using their Employee and Family Programme, signposted her to local social services for practical support. Social services recommended and facilitated a move into permanent residential care for Marie which alleviated some of the stress from Christine. Marie began to refuse to eat, drink and take medication. Marie would physically challenge staff that came to care for her. Meanwhile, Christine was still struggling to get a formal diagnosis for her mother and was pushed from pillar to post within the health system. Marie was asked to leave the home and she had to move back in with Christine. Christine contacted the Electrical Industries Charity again for emotional support. The charity provided some virtual talking therapy which took place over video chat so Christine could still manage her mother’s care. The charity can provide support to any former or current employee of the electrical and energy sector using the four branches of the charity Employee Assistance Programme (EAP).

Utilising the EAP, The Electrical Industries Charity also funded a private consultation with a senior consultant geriatrician. The geriatrician diagnosed Marie with an acute form of fronto-temporal dementia which explained Marie’s change in personality and ever-changing behaviour. Equipped with a formal diagnosis and better understanding of Marie’s needs Christine was able to find a more suitable residential home and Marie’s needs, although increasing, are well catered to. eneral Manager EMEA of Ideal Industries, Brett Smyth explains: “We know from experience that the products and brands electricians use when they are training are often the products and brands to which they remain loyal throughout their careers. “That’s one of the reasons why we have developed a knowledge partnership programme with colleges and training providers, because it allows us to contribute to training the next generation of electricians and enables us to introduce them to the benefits of our products and the quality they can expect from our brand early in their careers. We are currently investing heavily in developing a virtual reality platform that will enhance the training support we can offer and enable more training electricians to experience our products using innovative technology.”
Early Investment For Ideal Industries’ latest training provider partnership, early career does not necessarily mean school leaver trainees. In addition to working with a number of colleges, the company has developed a partnership with a not-for-profit training provider in Widnes, Cheshire. Trade Training UK specialises in upskilling electricians and enabling people to retrain for roles in the electrical sector. The training company was the brainchild of Greg Hoonahian, who has worked on the tools and in the vocational training sector and still combines delivering courses at Trade Training UK with work as an electrical tester. “There is huge demand for electricians and, with the growth in green technologies, zero carbon and electric vehicle targets, and the appetite for smart buildings, that demand will continue to grow,” explains

Greg. “Meanwhile, people who have lost their jobs or had time to consider their options on furlough over the past year are looking for opportunities to retrain. What we have done with Trade Training UK is to make electrical training affordable and accessible to people who need to continue earning while they retrain or upskill, with weekend and evening courses to fit around busy lives.” Greg delivers much of the training at Trade Training UK himself and was already familiar with Ideal Industries’ products from working on site. After contacting the company for samples of Ideal Industries’ Insure Push-In, Lever and In-Line Connectors to demonstrate the ease, speed and consistency benefits they offer for wire terminations, he was able to develop a wider partnership with the company. Brett continues: “We really admire what Trade Training UK does to make electrical training more accessible and encourage people of all ages to establish a career in the sector, so we were delighted to be able to support them with products for use in training sessions. It’s really important that people training for site roles have access to a variety of products so that they have experience of different installation methods and are ready for the diverse range of tasks that might be required of them on different projects.” Working together Ideal Industries has provided both In-Sure Connectors and Safe Isolation kits for use by Trade Training UK students and has also visited the training centre to demo a range
customers of the future. “The benefits for us are much wider. Our partnership with training providers like Trade Training UK allows us to gain first hand understanding of installation challenges, which helps guide our product development, and it also gives us access to feedback on new products prior to launch. It’s an ideal way for us to tap into technical knowledge and legislative insights too. All of this ensures we continue to innovate and give the electrical marketplace what it really needs: quality, affordable products that are faster and easier to install, while driving standards of quality and safety.”

NET DISTRIBUTION
O
ver the last few years, there has been a significant increase in the buying and selling of products and services online. In fact, recent research suggests that between 2019 and 2024, the UK eCommerce market is forecasted to grow from 22% of total retail sales to 32%. As we come to grips with the role that digital technology is having on our day-today lives, it is becoming obvious the extent to which the global consumer marketplace is influencing businesses – showcasing the true power of eCommerce. To maintain relevance in a competitive market, it is vital that distributors understand and match the evolving needs of businesses and ultimately become digitally savvy.
Setting the scene The electricial distribution industry must remain open to adopting eCommerce to stay on track for sustianble growth. The key challenge is overcoming the level of investment required to develop an online presence and compete effectively. Another issue with the shift online is culture – for small traders in particular, word of mouth, personal contact and long-term relationships have been fundamental to success for generations. Shifting operations online can seem daunting and risky. However, threatened by an explosion in online competitors and in the wake of the Covid19 pandemic, eCommerce is now critical to sustainable growth in electrical distribution.
George Brickwood, UK&I eCommerce Director at Schneider Electric, discusses the changing role of eCommerce in the Electrical Distribution Industry.
The current generation of B2B buyers are looking for ease and speed. Yet, while 72% of B2B buyers prefer self-service process that allows an order to be placed without the need for a sales rep, it is believed that around half of electrical distributors have no online presence. During the pandemic, research suggests 43% of B2B buyers actually switched suppliers because their existing supplier did not have an eCommerce solution. Put simply, to grow the customer base and keep existing customers loyal, dististributors need to consider the changing dynamic of their customer base. The role of technology in eCommerce To make the transition to online services, electrical distributors need to make digital decisions that enable a streamlined online buying experience that attracts new buyers, and services existing customers. Covid-19 has further highlighted the need for eCommerce strategies to be robust, scalable and futureproof. Any eCommerce model should start with a platform that matches business needs. Mobile capability

is critical, as it is fast becoming the preferred purchase method for many B2B buyers. From a technical perspective, a mobile-first approach can provide greater flexibility as it is easier to scale and will render more easily across devices. With any online service dealing with customer data, security must be second to none; the repercussions from flaws or failures can be damaging both financially and reputationally. The strongest platforms provide an end-to-end secure connection across all data and transactions. What’s more, sales conversion is heavily influenced by a customer’s perception of website safety and data privacy.

SPECIAL REPORT
Remember, customer trust is as essential to the switch to an online distribution strategy as compliance and safeguarding. 2020 demonstrated the importance of flexibility and resilience. Cloud hosting has since pivoted from being useful to being indispensable. Cloud hosting helps to manage changing market demands by upscaling or downscaling services in line with traffic changes or seasonal peaks. Cloud services can also reduce costs as there is no upfront investment in infrastructure and prices fluctuate according to requirement and capacity. What’s more, cloud-based architecture can improve accessibility and reduce the chance of data loss or security threats. Integration in eCommerce delivers a streamlined experience and optimises data intelligence. Third-party integration connects front-end and back-end tools and systems, so that components can seamlessly interact with each other. By connecting separate platforms, insight can be derived from customer behaviour and actions, such as buying patterns and the results of marketing activity. When developing an eCommerce strategy, third-party integrations can offer new tools to expand customer experience and platform capabilities, to deliver a personalised journey. Analytic thinking Finally, successful eCommerce in the electrical distribution industry requires analytic technology. Analytics help to understand what a customer wants from a buying experience by tracking their journey across the platform. For the electrical distributors, optimisation of customer experience is crucial for improving the shift from offline to online sales. With so many market competitors, the personalisation that analytics enables can elevate the experience to maintain customers and convert opportunities into sales. The right technology makes all the difference when developing a successful eCommerce strategy. However, eCommerce requirements in the electrical distribution industry are multifaceted. Not only does it require the right individuals to develop digital sales channels and in turn provide customer support, but the right processes also have to be in place to ensure changes are managed successfully. LED-ING SUSTAINABILITY APPLICATIONS © AdobeStock_lovelyday12
In the UK, lighting accounts for 38% of a commercial building’s electrical consumption. Here, Red Arrow explores how LED is leading the way in durability and versatility, and why LED efficiency is essential in commercial and industrial settings.
T
ypically, a commercial application uses 3,000 to 4,000 hours per annum, but an LED will last much longer than 10,000 hours – in fact, unless it’s a domestic style LED retrofit, it can last 50,000 hours. However, to maintain this level of sustainability, it’s essential to ensure you have the right LED for the right application. Are all LEDs equal? Inefficient lighting products can cost an untold amount of money over time, both in energy and maintenance replacements. Yet, with the advancement in LED technology, commercial power consumption is set to decrease significantly by 2025. In fact, while in 2019, almost half of all light sources in the world were LEDs, it’s been predicted that by 2030, over 87% of all light sources will be LEDs. However, although LEDs continue to outperform these other technologies,
choosing the correct product and ensuring a quality installation is the key to their longevity and effectiveness. Designed to face any type of environment, LEDs rarely require servicing or replacement, making them ideal for industrial applications. Let’s take security lighting as an example. In an application designed to ensure a safe and secure area, lighting efficiency is essential. And in warehouse facilities, LED lighting can lower operating costs, improve visibility and increase safety. But poorly designed and installed LED light fittings commercially impact on sustainability and efficiency due to: ● Temperature fluctuations:
12 MAY 2021 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
To ensure LEDs run effectively, they must not be thermally overloaded – if they are cool it will not harm their life, but if they are too hot, they will run less efficiently and decrease their lifespan. A well-designed light fitting will have the
correct thermal dissipation in place to dissipate the heat correctly away from the LEDs themselves. ● Efficiency drop:
LEDs can operate at various forward currents, dependant on the quantity of the LEDs and LED modules in the light fitting. Running them correctly respective to the optimum current for the circuit is essential as overrunning them causes inefficiency and damage. Underrunning on the other hand, can make them more efficient in some cases. ● Structural issues:
Not all LEDs are equal – they are graded during and after manufacturing for colour consistency and performance characteristics by a process called binning. Then, depending on these factors, it’s simple to establish the application of the LEDs and considerations, such as the life expectancy. Using lower quality LEDs

can mean poorer colour rendition and poorer performance. Fitting them into poor quality LED modules or using them with low quality LED drivers will also impact their life. LED lamps: significant savings Not only will the upfront costs of completing an LED retrofit be a similar cost to legacy light fittings, but LEDs also use 90% less energy and last up to 25 times longer, saving money on replacement and labour. Efficiently installed and well-made LEDs are more reliable and need less maintenance – and with properly designed fixtures, they can also operate well in standard ambient temperature environments. Plus, operation costs will be lower as LEDs are energy saving. Ultimately, LEDs save on costs, maintenance and energy in the long-term, and from day one. Choosing the right type of light source is vital and can make a significant difference in any commercial or industrial environment. Fortunately, the versatility of LED lighting means there is a light source to suit almost any need.

LIGHT WORK With energy efficiency on the list of priorities for a recent warehouse upgrade, Ovia’s Inceptor Hion range of Highbay fittings were chosen as a solution to provide an environmentally-friendly replacement.
F
or nearly two decades Q Catering has been operating as a leading delivered wholesale foodservice provider to caterers across Kent and East Sussex. Based in Sittingbourne, the company supplies a vast range of products which includes frozen, ambient and chilled, as well as janitorial and disposables. With this level of stock to cater for, significant warehousing and storage capacity is required. When a decision was made to upgrade the outdated lighting provision in the warehouse, Ovia’s Inceptor Hion 200W LED Dimmable Highbay fittings were selected to provide a high performance, more energy efficient LED alternative to the fluorescent fittings that had been in place since 2003. A clear vision Q Catering needed to address the poor visibility that staff were having to endure during the night-time stock picking sessions, with the original lighting solution not reaching the bottom two rows of shelving. The company responsible for the electrical installation was Kent-based Prowired Electrical Contractors, which offers a wide range of electrical services throughout the south east region. Danny Edmonds, Director at Prowired, had no hesitation in approaching the team at Ovia with whom he has had a long standing relationship. Ovia Regional Sales Manager, Reg Oldrey, came up with the lighting
Range focus: design, in conjunction with the requirements set out by the client. Commenting on the project, Danny Edmonds says: “I’ve known Mike Collins and Reg Oldrey at Ovia for many years. It’s a highly respected company with a reputation for quality and reliability. I’ve worked with them on many projects and trust their judgement when it comes to specifying the right products to deliver the solution needed. I’ve used the Inceptor Hion fittings previously and they were perfect for the job – easy to install, producing excellent light quality and saving energy in the process, compared to the original installation. The client was delighted with the result.” FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

FOLLOWING PROTOCOL © AdobeStock_prirach
When specifying and/or installing a charging network, it’s important to fit for the future. Here Craig Slater, UK Sales Manager from CTEK, looks at the importance of Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) in protecting companies against being tied into a particular manufacturer for future network expansion.
T
he number of electrical vehicles (EVs) on the road continues to increase at a rapid rate, and government initiatives to drive the expansion of the UK charging infrastructure are starting to take effect. The UK Government has committed to phase out the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030, 10 years earlier than originally planned. This is a key step on the ‘road to zero’ for the UK to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. And, as the number of rechargeable vehicles on Britain’s roads increases, the need for a robust and extensive charging network becomes ever more critical to meet the needs of today’s electric cars.
Thinking ahead When specifying a charging network however, it’s important to fit for the future, not just for today, to allow for easy expansion of the network as demand inevitably grows. When recommending an EV charging solution, make sure the EV chargers and associated software systems are future-proofed, to allow further charging points to be added, without needing to upgrade the system.
16 MAY 2021 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
Try not to limit the flexibility of your recommendation, make sure that any solution you present can seamlessly integrate with other manufacturers’ charge points and systems, through Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP). CTEK recommends to always check prior to installation that EV chargers are OCPP compliant because, if they’re not, the owner runs the risk of being tied into a particular manufacturer for future network expansion, which could stop customers taking advantage of price competition and any new technologies and innovations coming out from other providers. What is OCPP? Since 2009, the Open Charge Alliance has promoted the benefits of OCPP in order to make Electric Vehicle (EV) networks open and accessible. OCPP Certification Programme Every company involved with OCPP 1.6 implementations can now get the official, independent OCPP 1.6 Certificate. This will register their product as a certified compliant implementation – check that products have this certification.
016_PEW_MAY21_Layout 1 15/04/2021 15:28 Page 17
RENEWABLES & GREEN TECHNOLOGY
© AdobeStock_prirach
How does this impact the installation? With certain EV charging stations that are not OCPP-compliant, the unit will only work with its own brand of software. That could also mean being tied to standard network fees or other costs. When you choose an OCPP-compliant charging solution on the other hand, you can change your network whenever you want. OCPP means that there is an open application protocol which allows EV charging stations and management systems such as payment and monitoring solutions from different vendors to communicate with each other. So, for example if the company installing the chargers has an existing OCPP compliant payroll system, that can bill for EV charging in the workplace, they would be able to select any OCPP compliant EV chargers to add to this network. Why does OCPP seem to be such a hot topic at the moment? With the growing number of EVs and charging points, available power for charging sessions will soon need to start being coordinated in a more intelligent way. With larger networks comes a much greater level of complexity and a solution that needs to be configured, monitored and controlled. Don’t forget to balance the load! Load balancing is also a big consideration. The demand for EV charging is growing exponentially, but the grid supplying the electricity is not growing at the same pace. As power is a finite resource, demand on the grid needs to be managed. Using dynamic

load balancing on EV charging networks reduces the need for grid expansion and keeps connection costs down by optimising and distributing available power between the building and across all operational charge points. Communication is once again needed between the EV chargers and other power management systems such as the main power grid and possibly solar power and other management systems. Once again, OCPP gives flexibility to work with any OCPP compliant solutions, giving maximum flexibility. We recognise the needs of our
customers to have maximum flexibility and so we have developed a really flexible range of single and dual output products that are easy to install and maintain. The added benefit of open integration (OCPP compliance) makes them compatible with all third-party payment and monitoring systems. Our Chargestorm Connected 2 units can be installed as a new network and even introduced into an existing network with other brands of EV chargers. Our load-balancing solution than can handle up to 500 EV chargers and marketleading monitoring solutions will provide a complete end-to-end solution for local authorities that is easy to deliver and manage. Remember, when designing and specifying an EV charging network it’s important that this investment looks at the long-term, being scalable and able to adapt to user demand and government regulation. Introducing OCPP-certified hardware to any solution will bring maximum flexibility for now and into the future. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

Peter Dumigan Managing Director of the Hultafors Group UK, which owns Snickers Workwear, talks to PEW about its efforts in developing sustainable alternatives to traditional workwear fabric.
WASTE INTO WORKWEAR
E
very electricians’ wholesler and builders’ merchant will be aware of the problems of waste and probably have their own recycling systems in place. But just as the effects of plastic waste on the environment has been brought to the centre of consumer consciousness in recent years, so the problems caused by the disposal of clothing and shoes are coming to the fore. Images of ‘ragpickers’ on our waste clothing mountains in Africa are an increasing cause for concern as landfill sites in the UK become overwhelmed and we dispose of our waste on someone else’s doorstep. That’s why the sourcing of sustainable and environmentally
responsible workwear and safety footwear is becoming key parts of our environmental consciousness. Environmental impact Fabric technology has always been a key driver in the design and development of Snickers Workwear garments. Fabrics that deliver comfort and functionality, flexibility and durability are key components of every single product in the range. Now, as consumers and corporates strive to reduce their impact on the planet, the Hultafors Group is implementing a policy of replacing conventional fabrics in its workwear products with sustainable fabrics – Preferred Fibres.

Given increasing levels of awareness about the impact of waste on our environment, this will surely have an impact on the clothes people choose for work in years to come. For Snickers Workwear, this product development and design philosophy is being be applied to every new product in the Snickers Workwear collection with the additional assurance that the Snickers Hallmarks of design, comfort, functionality and durability will not be compromised in any way. Snickers Workwear’s objective is to ensure that by 2030, 70% of the fabrics used are Preferred Fibres – those with sustainable properties and a lower environmental footprint. As early as 2023, the company will be at 40% – a significant achievement by any measure. For those that haven’t come across the term, Preferred Fibres are those that have more sustainable properties compared to conventional man-made alternatives.

Given that almost any fabric and garment can be developed with recycled polyester yarn, Snickers Workwear’s aim is to replace conventional fibres such as polyester with Preferred Fibres which have full manufacturing transparency, traceability and thus reduce our climate impact and prevent waste from going into landfill. Man-made materials, such as nylon and polyester fabrics, can easily be recycled to create new, Preferred Fibres that have the same performance levels in comfort, flexibility and durability as the originals. Take Snickers Workwear’s new Fleece Jackets and Gilets for example. Environmentally friendly winter fleece jackets Snickers Workwear’s Jackets and Fleeces for the winter months are probably our bestselling garments during November through to March. With the growing consciousness among our users about environmental issues, we expect the new Fleece Jackets for men and women made from 100% recycled POLARTEC polyester to be a big

A
well-lit exterior not only increases functionality but also adds value to a home, and will enhance its kerb appeal. The right outdoor lighting can direct visitors to the front door, highlight the architecture, make life easier and safer when navigating in the dark and deter burglars. The next element is to consider outdoor spaces, such as garden gates, fencing, patio doors and dark areas of the front or back garden or courtyard to ensure maximum security. When these areas are left dark or shadowy, they can serve as the perfect hiding place for burglars, so these areas need to be covered in an outdoor lighting plan. It is also worth illuminating the front of the house to showcase architectural features and boost street lighting.
Safe and stylish There are plenty of outdoor lighting ideas which can be mixed and matched to spruce up a space as well as meeting the trend for personalised style to suit an individual’s taste and the style of their house and garden. Wall sconces, festoon lights, lanterns and table lamps will help to boost the visual appeal of an outdoor space and can be used as spotlights to highlight specific details such as wall artwork or landscape features. As they provide concentrated beams, they can also come in handy to banish any tricky dark spots around the property. Floodlights with a larger beam spread are a good

choice for the driveway or other dark sections such as the front lawn. They will also help to enhance home security. For example, motion-activated floodlights will come on when they sense movement, protecting homes against intruders. Staying in control Establishing how the homeowner would like to control their outdoor lights is another key area for your customer to consider as this market continues to develop. The options include manual control via a switch, automatic control with the help of a motion sensor or an integrated astro function or digital control via an app. End users who are keen on manual control for their outdoor lighting can choose from various weatherproof outdoor switches. These are resistant to heat, dust and water and are often portable so they are ideal for use outside. Automating outdoor lighting will give homeowners hassle-free operation and will also help them to save energy. Options include motion-triggered lights, astro lights or lights with integrated timers. For example, with the help of a motion detector, like the Gira motion detector Cube, you can ensure efficient and reliable lighting as it only gets turned on after detecting ambient brightness and the thermal motion of passers-by.

carbon emissions. Alternatively, it’s possible to automate outdoor lighting by using fixed time settings for turning them on. It’s easy to follow the seasons, as the lights can be set to adapt to sunrise and sunset with the help of the astro function.
The advantage of using motion sensor lights outside the home is that they will help end users save money as the lights won’t be left on at all times and this careful use of power will also help to reduce
Smart safety Finally, it is also possible to control smart outdoor lighting direct from a smartphone with the help of an app. Intelligent lighting control via an app gives homeowners flexibility with their lighting so that they can choose which lights to switch on and off, and when they want this to happen. With
all these options available, it is vital to ensure your customer gets clarity about why the end user wants outdoor lighting in the first place and to decide which the best options for their lifestyle are. For example, automated garden lighting can immediately make them feel safer as there are no longer any hiding places for uninvited guests. Motion and presence detectors are particularly effective and more energy-efficient than permanent lighting, as they will automatically switch on lighting when human movement is detected. Their sudden brightness draws greater attention to any potential problems and can deter burglars. On the other hand, permanent lighting solutions like switchcontrolled table lamps and decorative lights can help create an inviting and beautiful ambience for home entertaining with family and friends. Having seen steady growth between 2015 and 2019, the electronic security systems and access control market experienced a sharp contraction in 2020 caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. With prospects for recovery looking good, Neil Baldwin, Managing Director of ESP looks at why now is an ideal time for its CCTV range revamp.
T
he contraction last year came from the seventh edition of the Electronic Security Systems and Admission Control Market Report – UK 2021-25, highlighting the impact of the pandemic on the construction sector. The report describes the UK electronic security market as mature, especially in the non-residential sector, in terms of the proportion of premises that have some form of security equipment installed. This means that demand for replacement and upgrades are the key feature of the market and accounts for the majority of end-user sales.
Technology driving the market Technological developments have driven the replacement market, with heavy expenditure on R&D a key characteristic of the market. Leading technological trends include improvements in image quality, thermal imaging, artificial intelligence (AI), deep-learning analytics for CCTV, cloudbased solutions for video management systems, and facial recognition and other biometrics for access control. The Covid-19 pandemic has generated further development of specific applications such as management of crowd
density and touchless access control. Following the downturn in 2020, the prospects for recovery in the electronic security market are good. Services are likely to be the fastest growing area of the market. The increased numbers of CCTV cameras and electronic access control hardware devices, higher image quality, and the retention of larger quantities of footage for analytic purposes, will combine to create increased data storage requirements, generating a rise in demand for cloud-based data hosting services to reduce capital expenditure on in-house servers and software. Investing to stay ahead Whilst the last 12 months have been a time of uncertainty and upheaval for many, we are in the fortunate position to have been able to continue to make significant investments in the business. New products, additional support services and new team members within sales, technical and customer service departments, have all been introduced as the company experiences continued growth. The latest product category to come under development is CCTV, with a revamp
