PLACING TRUST IN TRAINING
I
f there is one thing that we have all got better at over the last two years it is training and for that I think we should all be thankful. Just a few years back people seemed to be split very firmly into three camps with regards to training – the believers, the ones that would be interested if they had time and the people that know everything anyway. Yes, unfortunately there are still people who truly believe they know everything – and there isn’t a lot that we can do for them! But for everyone else training has really taken off. It was an absolute delight to attend the Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA) dinner recently – and not just because I was actually out, at an live (not virtual) event, meeting real people! The highlight for me was the mention of the EDA Learning Achievement Awards which were presented the day after the dinner. Now in their eighth year they are what can only be described as a celebration of very talented individuals and it was great to see this celebration of training taking place. The Awards were presented to individuals from both manufacturer and wholesaler businesses who have delivered an outstanding performance in either the EDA’s Product Knowledge Programme or in an apprenticeship. Training is a subject which is very close to my heart because it is the one single thing which makes our industry stronger. What we need to remember is that training is not just about increasing product knowledge – there is so much more to it than that. It is about the value which we collectively put on our teams and on providing them with the ability to gain more knowledge and feel valued - because everyone feels more valued if they believe that time is being invested in training them for the future. While not everyone worked from home during the Covid pandemic, many people did and the hours they saved commuting, for many people were spent in training themselves for new opportunities. Don’t get me wrong, Netflix almost certainly had its place for pretty much everyone who worked from home but training also played a very important role. One of the main reasons was that it became so much easier to access as more and more companies introduced virtual learning which opened up a lot more opportunities for people to learn new skills. Going forward I don’t think we should ever go back to a time when training is only available in the classroom. It is obviously still going to play an important part in the training matrix but making it virtual opens it up to so many more people. Training provides an endless list of benefits, for everyone and it was great to see the EDA celebrating their highest achievers. But isn’t it time we all took a fresh look at the issue of training and continue to celebrate its importance and make it accessible for everyone? It is not enough to just read the product literature because to be truly effective we need to invest some time in our future performance – and that means everyone. Let’s not waste the lessons we have learned over the last two years – it’s time to make sure that training continues to take centre stage. See you next month

NEWS & VIEWS NEW CCTV AT LIGHTWATER VALLEY
ESP CCTV SYSTEMS INSTALLED AT LIGHTWATER VALLEY Lightwater Valley is a theme park in North Stainley, North Yorkshire, founded in 1969. Over the course of this year the Park has been investing in a number of new rides and attractions to enhance the overall visitor experience. At the same time, the owners have taken the opportunity to upgrade the CCTV systems which provide security throughout the grounds.
With around 30 different rides and attractions in total, the number and type of CCTV systems required is both extensive and varied and a mixture of wire-free and hard wired systems from across ESP’s CCTV ranges have been installed. There are two main functions for the CCTV installations – one is the evidence based collection of footage to help identify any potential breaches in security. The other is
to provide the ride operator with a clear view of all aspects of the rides, to ensure the safety of those taking part.
ABB’S PRODUCT DATA IS GOLD STANDARD EDA Affiliate, ABB Ltd – Electrification, is the latest in a growing number of leading manufacturers recognising the strategic importance of product data and its role in reaching the contractor customer. ABB’s product data held within the EDATA data pool has cleared the in-built quality control measures to reach Gold Standard.
ABB is one of 53 manufacturers signed up to EDATA, 13 of which have achieved Gold Standard. Edgar Aponte, CEO at Rexel UK Ltd, and Chair of EDA Data Services welcomed the news, saying: “ABB has achieved over 15,000 products at Gold Standard. EDATA currently holds in excess of 100,000 SKUs, which includes
over 43,000 Gold Standard SKUs from 13 different manufacturers, and we’re on target for expansion but not at the expense of data quality. EDATA’s ability to measure the merit of the product data inside is vital: data volume without excellence has little value. Improving data quality is tough, detailed work but it pays off.”
AICO AND CEF SIGN COMMERCIAL AGREEMENT WITH EIC Aico and City Electrical Factors (CEF) are delighted to have signed up to the Commercial Agreement programme with the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC), a new initiative in the industry which gives Commercial Agreement partners the opportunity to commit a small donation from a product, product range or service sold.
Aico’s Managing Director, Neal Hooper, commented on the partnership: “We both recognised the need to diversify fundraising for the Charity because of the pandemic. In person events are incredible fundraisers but that revenue stream was taken away, so it came down to what else
can we do? While business was still being done, and trade if anything was on the up, it seemed only right to try and give the Charity what we can.” CEF’s Commercial Director, Andrew Moseley, added: “We had previously raised money through product sales for the EIC and it worked really well.”

WHICH? AND SCHNEIDER ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP
WHICH? TRUSTED TRADERS AND SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC LAUNCH PARTNERSHIP Which? Trusted Traders and Schneider Electric have joined forces to help traders in the energy and electrical sector to stand out from competition. The partnership, which will enable electricians registered with Schneider Electric Partner Programme to apply for a Which? Trusted Trader endorsement at a discounted rate, also aims to increase consumer confidence in electricians they may employ to undertake work in their homes.
Which? Trusted Traders, an endorsement scheme that was established in 2013 by Which?, recognises reputable traders in the home and improvement and motor industries. Speaking on the partnership, Tom Gillam, Electrician Channel Programme Manager at Schneider Electric, said: “We are pleased to be able to offer our electricians the opportunity to become a Which? Trusted Trader, a move that will help them to stand out from the competition if and when they pass the assessment stage.”
IET & BSI PUBLISH AMENDMENT 2 TO WIRING REGULATIONS The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and BSI have signed off the content for Amendment 2 to BS 7671:2018 (18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations), which introduces a new requirement for Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs), updated requirements for the fire safety design for buildings and a new chapter on Prosumer’s Low Voltage Electrical Installations. Amendment 2 comes into effect immediately when published on 28th March 2022 and the previous version, BS 7671:2018+A1:2020, will be withdrawn six months later. This essential update to the IET Wiring Regulations will form
the national standard to which all new electrical installations and additions, and alterations to existing electrical installations in the UK are to comply. The IET and BSI are now urging all electrical professionals to ensure they become familiar with the changes. Dan Palmer, Associate Director of Committees at BSI said: “BS 7671 is one of the UK’s most important standards, providing authoritative requirements to promote electrical safety. The changes introduced in this new amendment will help electrical professionals keep up to date with new and innovative technologies.”

NEWS & VIEWS FIREANGEL SUPPORTS TRAUMA TEDDY CAMPAIGN
FIREANGEL SUPPORTS DERBYSHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE’S ‘TRAUMA TEDDY’ CAMPAIGN FireAngel has partnered with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service to sponsor its popular Trauma Teddy community initiative throughout 2022. First launched in 2018, the campaign involves a Buddy Bear being given to young children who may have witnessed or been involved in an incident that has caused distress, pain or trauma, to help diffuse painful memories, whilst also providing a keepsake from the firefighters who helped them. Over the last three years, Buddy Bears have been given to children across Derbyshire who have been involved in upsetting incidents, including house fires and road traffic collisions. The latest partnership will see the continuation of the
campaign throughout 2022 to provide children with the support and comfort they require. Lee Jones, Watch Manager at Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “As an emergency service, we're very focused on people involved in emergencies,
talking to them and explaining what's happening and how we're there to help, however it can be very difficult to build a quick rapport with children. “Using a buddy bear can help quickly break down this barrier and help try to take their mind away from the traumatic situation they may be in. The bear is theirs to keep, which hopefully works as a positive influence.” The latest partnership forms part of FireAngel and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service’s longstanding relationship, which recently included FireAngel’s sponsorship of the Fire and Rescue Service’s annual awards ceremony, which honoured the 77 individuals who achieved good conduct and long service throughout 2020 and 2021.

SWITCHTEC CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF TRADING Set up by Alan Lester and now headed up by son Jeremy, specialist distributor Switchtec is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The company was initially a distributor of relays, but its range has expanded rapidly over the years and it now operates as a UK franchisee for world-wide manufacturers of quality components. Indeed, the company has exhibited growth year on year and now boasts an annual turnover in excess of £3.5m.
CEO Jeremy Lester comments: “Moving with the times and embracing new technology is the norm at Switchtec. We source components globally and can choose products that technically and commercially satisfy the needs of our customers. The coming year is no different and we have many new products coming through, including solutions from leading global innovator in industrial internet technology Kyland. CHARITY UPDATE
NUTRITION AND HEALTH – SUPPORT FROM THE EIC
W
e know a healthy diet and lifestyle are vital to maintaining our wellbeing, with a poor diet leading to a whole host of problems, including everything from high cholesterol to cancer. Whereas these can too often be problems of excess, malnutrition is also a serious problem, and can result in stunted growth, problems with eyesight and diabetes. Nutrition and health – both physical and mental – are all areas the EIC can help our industry colleagues with. This was the case for Holly and her husband, who both worked in generation and renewables. Holly’s husband had experienced significant trauma as a child. But he had suppressed this trauma for so many years that he became unable to cope. Refusing to engage in professional help, he started to experience thoughts of suicide. The knock-on effect on his marriage and Holly’s own mental health was understandably huge, and she started to struggle as well. Due to the urgent needs of her husband, she thought of caring for herself very little and turned to other ways to manage her emotions. She did this through her eating. Holly’s weight dropped at a concerningly fast rate and, in a very short time, Holly lost nearly 9 stone. But her fluctuating weight at
times of distress was nothing out of the ordinary. It was her way of coping when she found things difficult to manage. Holly was suffering from an eating disorder – a mental health condition whereby she was using the control of food to cope with feelings and challenging situations. It can include eating too much or too little or worrying obsessively about your weight or body shape. Anyone can get an eating disorder with teenagers affected the most. Left unchecked, it can lead to malnutrition from not getting enough nutrients in your diet and result not only weight loss, but a range of issues including fatigue and irritability, difficulty concentrating, depression and anxiety. Thankfully, with the right treatment, most people can recover. The right support Through her job, Holly was made aware of the EIC and the support available to them both. Holly spoke with the charity and opened up about the struggles her husband was experiencing. The EIC explored possible support for her husband and the right professionals were sourced. Holly felt a huge sense of relief that her husband was now going to be adequately supported. As a result, she was also ready to allow support for herself. With her eating
disorder being her hugely detrimental coping strategy, the EIC sought help with a dietitian. Alongside this, Holly also engaged in sessions with a therapist. With the right support put in place for both Holly and her husband, they were able to turn a hugely positive corner in their relationship together, and in all aspects of their lives. The help Holly and her husband were able to access was due to the support of the EIC and the powerLottery. It meant they both got the support and treatment they required. Without powerLottery, EIC would not be able to offer support to people like Holly and her husband. That’s why we need you to become a powerLottery player to help EIC to continue supporting our industry members. powerLottery is the only lottery made for our industry by our industry. It gives players 40 chances to win cash prizes ranging from £50 to £1,000 every single month. A £10,000 draw bi-yearly gives you even more opportunity to win BIG. A new car, a holiday in the sun, a kitchen re-fit or a brand-new wardrobe… Think of all the different ways you could spend £10,000.

FACE TO FACE
PEW sits down with John Humphery, General Manager of Deta Electrical’s Lighting, Fire & Safety division to discuss future plans and industry issues.
FACE TO FACE DETA ELECTRICAL Q
What is Deta’s primary focus for the year ahead?
A. This year Deta Electrical has taken significant steps to build upon its vision to become the ‘one stop shop’ of trusted brands to the electrical wholesale market. Effective 1st January 2022, the Channel Smarter Safety trading division became a fully integrated part of Deta Electrical. The full integration of Channel has supported the establishment of two newly created divisions of Deta Electrical. Our primary focus for 2022 is to keep our promise to deliver additional value to our wholesale partners by giving them access to a comprehensive range of electrical products for all residential and commercial projects and provide them with a dedicated sales and customer support team that they can lean on for specialist expertise. How has Deta responded to the increased focus on sustainability within the industry?
Q
A. At Deta Electrical, we’ve identified key areas of sustainability that we recommend professional installers consider when making a sustainable product choice. These include selecting products that meet ErP requirements and incorporate power change and colour change features. Ease of changing parts and packaging recyclability should also be considered when choosing products. We continue to invest heavily in the development of our ranges to ensure these objectives are met and that we are able to supply our wholesale partners with sustainable products that incorporate these key features and offer longevity.
What do you think is the leading factor in most purchasing decisions – price, quality or brand reputation?
Q
Q
Which product groups are seeing increased interest at the moment?
A. With sustainability and carbon footprint being a key topic in the industry at present, we are certainly seeing this translate into purchasing decisions. Across our Lighting, Fire and Safety division, and within our wholesale and contractor network, we are seeing a greater prominence and focus on products that are not only efficient but are also reliable and last the test of time. How has an increase in the cost of materials coupled with supply chain issues impacted growth in the electrical sector?
Q
A. There is no doubt that unprecedented cost increases and delays associated with raw materials, shipping and transport has led to many challenges for us as a manufacturer, but we also recognise it has been equally challenging for our wholesale customers and installers. To support our customers, we have taken the necessary steps to ensure we remain competitive and continue to offer value for money; additionally we have increased our investment in stock to ensure the impact of supply chain pressures on our wholesale partners is mitigated wherever possible.
16 MARCH / APRIL 2022 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
A. We firmly believe that there should be an appropriate balance between the feature and benefits of the product offer, quality, and price competitiveness. In the first instance, we work closely with our customers to understand their specific needs and then offer the product solution best suited to the job in hand. Coupled with the belief of educating wholesalers and contractors on the products available to them and the advantages of each, our experience is, if the price is fair then they put their trust in us to make a purchase.
Q
How much does Deta invest into developing new products?
Continuous investment in innovation and new product development is key to our growth plans as well as aspirations to become the ‘one-stop shop’ supplier of choice. Over the last decade, Deta Electrical has invested heavily in product range expansions and numerous brand acquisitions, accordingly our product offer has grown exponentially. It is clear the market is looking for products to meet the demands for environmental considerations and improved performance vs power usage. This has seen a continued focus on LED technology and a move to colour temperature and power changing solutions, ultimately getting more out of a traditional lighting product. SPECIAL REPORT
TAKING
STOCK
Making a decision on stock levels is a precarious choice: too much and you risk not being able to sell all the items, too little and you risk disappointing the customer. Paul Dawson, Commercial Director at Niglon, calls on wholesalers to ensure they’re prepared for what lies ahead.
O
rdering stock when you need it rather than keeping a reserve of items in storage (otherwise known as the ‘just-in-time’ approach) is proving particularly problematic right now, with everything from Chinese coal rationing to the pandemic playing havoc with manufacturing and supply.
Chinese coal cuts No smoke billowing from chimneys, empty workstations, and workers sat around waiting for updates. It’s a sight many of us have become accustomed to in recent months as the Chinese energy crisis plays out across the world’s media. The dual triggers have been ongoing restrictions around producing electricity using coal (limiting what can be produced in China) and rising global coal costs (limiting their ability to import more to plug the gap). Rather than pass increased costs on to consumers, electricity suppliers are choosing to ration both domestic and industrial users – meaning factories in two thirds of China have seen production cease for hours, or sometimes days, at a time on a regular basis.
18 MARCH / APRIL 2022 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
While it’s devastating for those in China seeing their lives and livelihoods impacted, the entire globe is feeling the knock-on effects of product shortages due to the semi-closure of so many factories. Further concerns have been raised over the lack of prior warning about power outages – there have been claims that some manufacturers are only being notified overnight that their factories won’t be able to open the following day. It means manufacturers were already at a disadvantage leading up to Chinese New Year when many workers travel away from industrial areas to visit family, with a proportion choosing not to return each year. The festivities traditionally cause delays for those purchasing items from China, and the impact looks likely to be felt more acutely in 2022 given the existing disruption. Trouble at Sea Caused largely by pandemic-related lockdowns, with other exacerbating factors like extreme weather affecting parts of the world, to say the global supply chain has been disrupted in the last two years is a gross understatement.

SPECIAL REPORT
More than three quarters of ports are experiencing abnormally long turnaround times, with no end in sight as experts predict we’ll see the situation continue until at least next summer. Of course, the impact has been a huge rise in costs – with the cost of shipping containers rising by at least 400% in the past year, and door-todoor shipping times increasing from 41 to 70 days in the same time period. Add to this the HGV driver shortage – impacting the UK in particular in the wake of Brexit – which is seeing containers stacked up at ports once they do manage to reach our shores, and it all makes for rather grim reading. What lies ahead? The phrase ‘this too shall pass’ comes to mind – while an unlucky combination of factors has come together to create the perfect storm (or perfect headache) for manufacturers and suppliers, there is hope that we can emerge from that storm. And it feels likely that ‘just-in-time’ may be replaced with a preference for larger stock reserves
across the electrical sector and beyond. At Niglon, we had taken the decision to increase our stock levels by 30% - and keep them at this higher level on an ongoing basis. We had sound business reasons for the choice but could never have predicted the events which would unfold afterwards – we were lucky that the decision put us in the best possible position to weather what was to come, and looks set to keep us running as normal as the global problems continue. Preparations need to be made throughout the supply chain – that’s why
I’m urging wholesalers to act fast to try and secure stock. With months of disruption ahead, it’s crucial that they’re able to continue offering products to installers else they risk a significant impact on their business. And this isn’t just a case of getting through until ‘normality’ resumes. The situation should act as a wake-up call to everyone in the electrical industry that we need to keep preparing for the worst. That’s not pessimistic – it’s simply a more sensible way to run a business than adopting the ‘just-in-time’ approach. Because even when the shipping delays and Chinese electricity crisis are resolved, there will undoubtedly be permanent scars left from the pandemic, Brexit, and economic slump, and that’s why continued higher stock levels are – in my opinion – something we should all be aiming for. HOW TO SMARTEN UP SECURITY Wholesalers can satisfy the demand from professional installers for competitive smart security solutions with ESP’s new Fort Smart Security range, available exclusively through the wholesale channel.
L
aunched in October last year, ESP’s Fort Smart Security range made its debut in front of contractors at ELEX in Sandown the following month, where it received an enthusiastic response from the trade. It is now six months since launch and ESP is delighted with the reaction that the new range has received in the market and sales are continuing to flourish. The Fort range has at its core accessibility and simplicity for both the installer and end user and has been designed to bring simple, smart solutions together for a safer and more comfortable home. By providing wholesalers with comprehensive information about the range and helping them to understand its full capabilities, ESP is arming them with everything they need to help sell this smart security solution to their customers. The Fort Smart Security range Fort is a comprehensive range of smart security products, which includes intruder alarms, video doorbell, video security light, sensors and a selection of 1080p cameras. They all operate under a single app – the ‘Click Smart+’ app – which is completely subscription-free, with no additional fees incurred. By bringing the operation of the new Fort range under the well-established, tried and tested Click Smart+ app from Scolmore, users will have control of a raft of connected home and security products all
from one secure, easy to access platform. At the heart of the Fort Smart Security range is the smart intruder alarm, which will support up to 32 RF devices and provide remote monitoring and alert notifications directly to the Click Smart+ app. The smart alarm is available in handy kits or can be purchased as separate devices for a tailor-made system. Kit control There are six different kits in the range, with the basic kit containing one each of the following - a smart hub, PIR, door/window contact and remote control. Other kits offer an additional number of PIRs, door/window contacts and remote controls, and there are two kits which include Pet PIRs. All devices supplied within the kits are pre-registered, to assist with a straightforward install. The Wi-Fi Smart Alarm Hub includes an inbuilt siren, backup battery with up to eight hours’ standby time and GSM backup facility (Sim not included) for additional system security. The Hub is compatible with a range of battery powered RF devices that can be controlled to provide whole home security in and around a property. Smart Alarm accessories include remote keypad, pet friendly PIRs and vibration sensor as well as a solar powered or wired external siren for an additional intruder deterrent. The range also includes a Smart Alarm Keypad which

provides a central keypad that is usually positioned in entrances and hallways. The keypad requires the Smart Alarm Hub and provides users with arm, disarm, home mode and panic functions. In addition, the Fort range includes Wi-Fi security devices such as a video doorbell, video security light and a selection of 1080p cameras. These are all supported on the same app and do not require the hub, or any additional subscription fees other than a Wi-Fi connection. The security devices include a video doorbell to monitor visitors, security flood lights with inbuilt cameras to deter intruders at night and a selection of simple to use cameras for a range of applications, such as monitoring loved ones and pets or simply to provide reassurance when away from your property. Fully automated One of the main talking points among contractors who saw the Fort Smart Security range at ELEX was the fact that the range operates under a single app which provides control not just of the Fort Smart Security products but also the Click Smart+ range of connected home products from Scolmore. Contractors were also impressed with the demonstrations on stand that allowed them to see how the various products from across the Fort and Click Smart+ ranges interact. For example, using a combination of devices, the system has the ability to activate exterior floodlights

SPECIAL REPORT
and internal lights on instances of the smart alarm being activated in different modes; armed, disarmed, SOS or intruder. This automation would light up a property, providing reassurance to the user when arriving or leaving a property during low light hours. In addition, a device connected to a smart socket can be activated in the different smart alarm activation modes. Users also have the ability to schedule when the exterior and interior lights activate on and off via the schedule. For additional automation setting, lights can be activated by the changing times of sunset and sunrise, meaning in the winter months the lights will activate earlier and automatically adjust in the summer months, offering security and economic benefits in one. The automation feature provides an extra deterrent to a would-be intruder attempting to break into the property. If the smart alarm’s shock sensor picks up vibrations on attempted break-in through a window the Smart Alarm activates the internal and external siren for an auditable alert, and the additional lighting
provides the visual alert that the system has been triggered. In the intruder scenario the user will receive a notification via the app and have the ability to access the cameras to live view or view recorded footage, as well as the option to open up 2-way audio channels. Other voice functions are available for convenience. The Smart Alarm can be voice activated through Alexa devices and this includes arming and disarming using a preset security pin. For additional convenience the Smart Alarm includes automated arming and disarming modes, meaning for the busy and absent-minded user the system automatically arms and disarms on schedule ensuring protection when it’s needed. Subscription-free app ESP believes a key element to the projected success of the new security range is its subscription-free app. Unlike some systems on the market which will provide a
free basic system, but charge for additional devices and functions, users of the Fort Smart Security system, powered by Click Smart+, will have full access to all devices and functions with no subscription fee or hidden costs to pay. The app provides an easy-to-use platform to remotely arm and disarm the system, whilst producing real time events such as activations and low battery indication status. In addition, the app supports a range of Click Smart+ home automation products which enables a range of sockets and switches to be activated in certain system scenarios. AIR COOLING
FAN CLUB COVID lockdowns and restrictions have meant many people spent a lot of time at home. And with this, there has been an increase in home improvements with households spending the money they saved on their homes. This frequently includes a new bathroom, which offers a great opportunity for electrical wholesalers to increase fan sales, so it’s important to ensure you have the right stock on your shelves. Lee Warren, Sales Director at Manrose, looks at the fan features and benefits to look out for.
B
ritish homeowners spent an average of £2,608 on home improvements in 2020 according to the Checkatrade Home Pride Index 20211. This is up 15%, or £338, compared to 2019 and it seems that 2021 carried on in much the same way. And with the home improvement trend showing no signs of slowing, now is a great time to review stock and offer electricians products that will keep both them and their customers happy. This includes the latest bathroom fans which are an essential element of any bathroom renovation. Ventilation is vital to tackle condensation and mould, a common issue in bathrooms, as well as ensuring good indoor air quality (IAQ).
Reliability Stocking reliable products is key. For electricians, fan reliability and no call backs are high on their wish list. Not only does it make their lives easier, it makes for happy customers too, which is essential for business reputation. So, it makes sense to use products from a company renowned for its reliability, that offers a good length warranty and who manufactures fans that are built to last. Manrose is known for its reliability. Its latest Quiet Fan X5 boasts Manrose’s renowned reliability providing effective and efficient ventilation. For strength and durability, the fan is manufactured using high gloss ABS thermoplastics and it complies with both Part F & L of the new Building Regulations.
Meanwhile, its high quality, long-life motors are continuously rated and warranted for a minimum of 30,000 hours or three years. This all adds up to the Quiet Fan X5 being a great choice for both wholesalers and electricians to build their reputations and gain 5-star reviews and happy customers. Peace and quiet But it doesn’t end there. The Quiet Mark National Noise Report: Household & Workplace Pandemic-Recovery Survey, recently revealed that two thirds of UK 1834 year-olds are willing to spend more on purchasing quiet appliances. When it comes to bathroom fans nobody wants to listen to the annoying drone of a fan while taking a bath or shower. Households are increasingly demanding quiet products for a peaceful home environment so fans with ultra-low sound levels are a good choice to stock. For example, the Quiet Fan X5 has an incredibly quiet running volume as low as just 25dB(A), whilst offering an
impressively high extraction rate of 90m³/hr. This means moisture laden air is removed to avoid condensation and mould and IAQ is improved. And with everyone now more aware of the quality of the air they breathe because of COVID, fans that make a real difference to IAQ are sure to be in demand. And when it comes to peace and quiet nobody wants to shout about energy bills either. With energy prices rising, households are going to be even more aware of running costs and will demand products that are cheaper to run. Wholesalers can therefore help electricians meet this demand by stocking fans that use a low energy motor, like the Quiet Fan X5, which has a maximum consumption of six watts and a low SFP of 0.24w/l/s. Having an energy efficient option like this will be sure to impress energy conscious households. Good looking Another way electricians will be keen to impress their customers is by being able to offer an attractive fan. With an increased focus on interior design, consumers are looking for improved aesthetics of everything in the home, including bathroom fans. So, wholesalers who can stock a fan that enables electricians to give their customers a choice of style will score extra brownie points. For example, the Manrose Quiet Fan X5 is available in an attractive tiled version or an open grille option, both of which will look good in any bathroom.

AIR COOLING Easy install While wholesalers need to stock fans that electricians’ customers desire, they also need to consider what electricians look for in a fan to help ensure good sales. Ease of install is therefore key. Fans like the Quiet Fan X5 that are suitable for both wall and ceiling mounting for install flexibility will always go down well with installers. Add to that the Quiet Fan X5’s IPX5 rating which makes fitting the fan even easier and safer, since the fan can be safely installed in the splash zone without the need for a low voltage transformer. It also means fans like the Quiet Fan X5 are ideal for bathrooms and shower rooms of all sizes. A quick install also generally means less mess. A range of control options also makes install easier and so is another tick when it comes to choosing which fans to stock. A choice of control options such as basic, timer, humidistat and PIR is handy. The Quiet Fan X5 offers all these options, comes complete with integral backdraught shutters and is double insulated so does not require an earth.
For wholesalers, it is “important to consider all the different factors to ensure they stock the right fans that meet the demands of both electricians and households.
”
Environmental credentials As well as choosing fans that offer great features, it’s also important to know that you have chosen a manufacturer with good environmental credentials. For example, 100% of Manrose’s PVC ducting is made from recycled window frames. Meanwhile, Manrose uses plastics extracted from old fridges collected from customers’ homes to create ducting components. In addition, Manrose has invested in new energy efficient moulding and tooling equipment for its
manufacturing site offering increased supply capacity based on demand, while reducing its impact on the environment. Wholesalers can therefore be assured that with Manrose they are making a good environmental choice too. So, for wholesalers, it is important to consider all the different factors to ensure they stock the right fans that meet the demands of both electricians and households, which is a great way to maximise sales. For example, the Quiet Fan X5 bathroom fan ticks all the right boxes, offering robust reliability, great performance, ultra-low sound levels and ease of install. As a result, electricians are set to benefit from fewer call-backs, more happy customers and improved 5-star review ratings which in turn means wholesalers have happy customers too.

LIGHTING
THE SMART WAY TO KEEP A CAP ON ENERGY BILLS With households and businesses facing huge hikes in energy bills, and the prospect of high gas and electricity prices lasting for another two years, Mike Collins, Sales Director with Ovia Lighting, looks at how being smart with lighting can help reduce energy consumption.
W
hen the new energy cap comes into force on 1st April, average energy bills will increase by £693, a rise of 54%, to £1,971 a year. Experts have also warned that the energy price cap could rise once again in October 2022 by 20%. There is no shortage of advice in circulation on ways that householders can reduce energy consumption, with turning off lights at the top of the list. However, as well as switching off lights in general, consideration should be given to switching the lamp itself, to more energy efficient LED alternatives.
According to the latest lighting report from AMA Research - the 15th edition Lighting Market Report – UK 20202024 – the key driver for the lighting market is the rapid adoption of LED lighting in both the non-domestic and domestic construction sectors. LED’s growth in market share has been underpinned by energy efficiency regulations, leading to the removal from sale of halogen lighting from September 2021 and fluorescent lighting set to follow in September 2023. With LED lighting increasingly seen as key to improving environmental footprints and driving down energy consumption, the
global LED market will continue to grow significantly in the coming years. In 2020 the global LED lighting market stood at $55,201.9 million and is expected to reach $152,442.3 million by 2030 – demonstrating a CAGR of 10.7% from 2020 to 2030. Significant improvements in light output and quality, including a wider spectrum and warmer white light, is helping to boost their acceptability in the market. LEDs now represent the majority of UK lamp sales. It pays to switch According to the Energy Savings Trust, lighting accounts for 15% of a typical UK household’s electricity bill, so all measures taken to reduce consumption will be key when trying to keep costs down. LEDs use less energy and cost a lot less in the long run. A traditional halogen bulb lasts around two years, based on three hours’ daily use, around 2,000 hours. An LED under similar conditions lasts 10,000 hours upwards, for 10 years or longer. The Energy Savings Trust also says that savings can be made of between £2-3 per year for every traditional halogen bulb switched to a similarly bright LED bulb. If the average UK household replaced all of their bulbs with LEDs, it would cost about £100 and save about £40 a year on bills and would reduce the carbon

dioxide emissions by up to 40kg a year. That is equivalent to the carbon dioxide emitted by driving a car around 140 miles. While it will have an effect, replacing traditional lamps with LEDs is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to driving down energy consumption and reducing costs and environmental impact. The advancement of smart technology has created new opportunities for individuals and businesses to really make a difference. The combination of LEDs and controls is the future. For the home, lighting can now be easily controlled via an app on a mobile device to ensure lights are only on where and when necessary. Energy and cost saving calculations For businesses, replacing outdated lighting with modern LED systems will help them to
improve energy consumption and reduce costs at a time when many of them are facing rising operational costs. For a quick guide to the cost and energy savings on products within the Ovia lighting collection, contractors can use the ‘Tool Kit’ feature on the Scolmore Group App where they can access the Ovia Lighting Cost Saving Calculator to see cost and energy savings across the product range. For larger and more complex installation requirements, Ovia offers a more in-depth service which includes a free site survey. A member of the Ovia team will visit the site in question and carry out a full survey of the existing lighting installation. They will take into account which lamps are currently being used and the quantity, how long they are on for, any areas not in use, for example. With all the facts and figures to hand, Ovia will put the information into a
calculation to work out which particular products – lamps and controls – are required to maximise the reduction in energy consumption and therefore running costs for that specific building. The cue to lighten up Energy efficiency was top of the list of priorities for a recent lighting project undertaken by Ovia. Q Catering is a leading wholesale foodservice provider to caterers across Kent and East Sussex. When a decision was made to upgrade the outdated lighting provision in the warehouse, Ovia’s Inceptor Hion 200W LED Dimmable Highbay fittings were selected to provide a high performance, more energy efficient LED alternative to the fluorescent fittings that had been in place since 2003 and a total of 12 of the fittings were installed. OUTDOOR POWER
WHATEVER THE
WEATHER Models for Class 2 electrical device connections should be IP68 and IP69K-rated, fully submersible and saline resistant for exterior projects, says Andrew Ferny, Wholesale Director, Hylec-APL.
W
ith Spring arriving in the UK, now’s the peak time for starting on outdoor projects. For the residential sector many contractors are likely to be starting on jobs like garden lighting and pond and pool installations. Commercial installers will be looking at multiple projects involving exposure to the elements, ranging from outdoor lighting in commercial premises such as hotel terraces to large-scale public installations. The overriding requirement for outdoor power is a safe installation that can be signed off with full confidence that the components selected are able to provide continuity of connection for extended periods of time. Connectors for outdoor power should have the correct IP rating and be robust and reliable. Ease of installation in what can sometimes be challenging working conditions is also important! Connectors for outdoor power usually rely on a sealing system or are gel-filled. With a huge range of applications including marine, architectural illumination, signage and commercial underwater lighting, how can wholesalers know the products they are stocking will suit their customers’ needs? The Weatherproof connector range is a good example, with resistance to extreme conditions including rain, flood, tide, sand, snow, ice, industrial washes, chemicals, oils and grease. The IP68 and IP69K models
can be permanently submerged under water, including sea water, and also withstand high pressure water jets as well as dirt and dust. Installations around the world include architectural lighting, street lighting, underwater lighting, illumination of road signs and billboards and the connection of interior and exterior Class 2 electrical devices. Bridging the gap Just one very visible example was the reillumination of Blackfriars Bridge in London when the original underlighting partially failed after some years, leaving whole sections of the bridge unlit. The contractors for the project, Armadillo Lighting, discovered that the problem was not the LEDs but rather that the connectors used had failed due to corrosion, water ingress and rust. The whole underlighting system had to be completely re-wired, a complex job involving technicians abseiling down from the bridge, supported by supply and safety boats. Top-quality waterproof connectors certified to IP68, clip-in style connectors and a wide choice of accessories were required. Install ease and speed were critical in such challenging conditions. Weatherproof TH392 connectors from Hylec were selected, as their proprietary system provides total protection against permanent submersion and blocks moisture transmission across
terminals. The quick push-pull connection feature saved time and Weatherproof connector TH391 end cap covers protected the whole line at the end of each working day throughout the project until contractors returned the next. All the attributes A solution found for an industrial customer’s range of industrial fan units demonstrates the versatility of the Weatherproof range. Installed in situations exposed to outside elements as well as interior humid atmospheres, a simple connection system was needed that obviated any necessity for installers to access the interior of the fan control unit. Again, the Weatherproof range had all the attributes required, being saline resistant, flame retardant to UL94 V0/V2 and vibration resistant as well as rated up to IP68 and IK08 for impact resistance. The fans are now supplied with the panel mount part of the Weatherproof connector factory-installed, so contractors only have to take the socket section, wire up three or four wires and mate it with the panel-mounted part. On dry land prone to seasonal and unseasonal downpours, as well as underwater, Weatherproof connectors can be relied on to keep power connected! TO DISCOVER MORE VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/WE010

OUTDOOR POWER
THE GREAT OUTDOORS It is approaching the time of year when homeowner focus shifts from inside to their outdoor space. Katie Plumstead, Marketing Manager with Scolmore Group, looks at some of the ways that professional installers can bring power to the outdoors to create a safer, brighter and more welcoming recreational space for their clients.
W
hatever outdoor project is being planned, the advice is always to make sure a reputable professional is engaged to ensure that any work is carried out safely and meets all the required regulations. This is where professional electricians come into their own, with the necessary skills and knowledge to advise their customers on how best to bring power to the outdoors and to upgrade or improve existing lighting installations. Across the Scolmore Group there is an array of products that installers can call on to provide power, lighting and security protection to enhance their customers’ outdoor spaces.
You’ve got the power Power can be brought safely to sheds, office spaces, heating and hot tubs, with the Aquip66 range of IP66 rated, easy-toinstall 10A and 20A weatherproof outdoor switches and sockets. The IP66-rated weatherproof socket and switch enclosures offer users a single fix installation – with the whole of the back box fixing to the wall to accommodate the socket or modules. Multiple knock-outs on each side (20mm) allow for entry from all angles, and a flexible rubber base with rear entry gasket provides extra weatherproof protection, as well as allowing for mounting on most types of uneven surfaces. The range includes 1 and 2 gang waterproof switch enclosures which utilise
MiniGrid single width switch modules which are rated at 10A, as well as 1 and 2 gang switches that utilise the GridPro range of modules and offer 20A switching options. The 1 and 2 gang 13A switched power socket outlets are available with standard covers and also come supplied with a semi-transparent lid and socket outlet with neon. In a recent addition, a new 13A switched fused connection unit has been introduced to the range in response to feedback from contractors. This is available with a semi-transparent cover with neon power indicator, as well as with a standard cover.

Smart control outdoors With power brought to the outdoor spaces, Scolmore’s Click Smart+ range will allow remote control of any electrical elements outside – switching on lighting, controlling an outdoor appliance or sprinklers, or the ability to switch off power for security. The Click Smart+ range has been created to simplify and streamline connected home products – lighting controls, smart sockets, security cameras and sensors. It utilises Zigbee technology – one of the most widely adopted smart home communication protocols. Zigbee certified devices require the Click Smart+ Hub and communicate with each other using a mesh network. This creates multiple pathways for the connection of multiple smart home devices without compromising signal and communication range. Working alongside Click Smart+ is the

They all operate under the same ‘Click Smart+’ APP – which is completely subscription-free, with no additional fees incurred. By bringing the operation of the Fort range under the Click Smart+ APP from Scolmore, users will have control of a raft of connected home and security products all from one secure, easy to access platform. Let there be light When it comes to lighting solutions for the garden, it is worth considering the main functions that are required. These could include accessibility, highlighting of particular areas of the garden, security and aesthetics. Ovia’s Pathfinder LED floodlights are an ideal way to provide ambient lighting around the garden – lighting up walkways, driveways, as well as highlighting architectural features when used as an up-lighter. The range offers 40 options from 10W to 300W, with fittings up to 50W available in both black and white finishes and they come in a choice of Warm White or Cool White colour temperatures. The standard range can be used with remote sensors PIRs (indoor and outdoor) or Microwave sensors (indoor only) as well as with the Click Smart+ control system. Not all lighting needs to be strictly functional and Ovia’s Inceptor Intense LED strips allow you to add some striking detail to highlight a particular area in the garden, for example around the counter of the newly installed bar facility. Inceptor Intense is a range of 24V LED strips, available in cool white, warm white and RGBW. They come in four pre-cut lengths – 0.5m, 1m, 2m and 5m - and use a plug and play system, making installation quick and easy. With a variety of strips, connectors and drivers available in the range, installers have the flexibility for complete customisation. There is a simple LED Tape Configurator on the Scolmore Group APP which allows you to create the perfect LED strip setup with an easy step-by-step guide. With power and lighting in the garden all under control, full advantage of its benefits can be taken all year round. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT SCOLMORE’S OUTDOOR POWER RANGE AT: WWW.RDR.LINK/WE011

hen Timeguard put the power of its trusted brand name and threeyear guarantees behind home app and voice-controlled Wi-Fi accessories, it gave professional installers and their wholesalers a powerful offer to counter the online DIY offers. From hard-wired sockets, spurs, timers and in-line connectors to trailing sockets, bayonet-fitting adaptors and RGB-adjustable candle lamps, and the ever-popular door chimes with cameras, these are products installers can offer and recommend to their customers with confidence. The next big step from the Timeguard design engineers was to add an integrated Wi-Fi camera and two-way audio to their professional outdoor LED lighting offer: the LEDPROCAM. This really puts clear water between installers and the DIY market. Of course, as it’s Timeguard, the impressive set up is only available through the wholesaler channel. Even before the launch of the LEDPROCAM, the modular LEDPRO range that it joins has been one of Timeguard’s biggest successes. The popularity springs from the ground-breaking concept of
enabling installers to design their own products and be sure of having the best specification for the job. They can mix and match floodlights (10W-100W) with their choice of PIR, photocell or RF switch, and reap the savings of using the spare terminals provided to loop out to add on slaves as needed. The big advantage onsite is how the floodlight and the switches just plug together. The modular concept is a bonus for stockists too, as you can rationalise what you need to keep on the shelf, without reducing the choice you offer. The LEDPRO’s WiFi camera is integrated with the PIR switch and provides users with a view of what is happening outdoors as well as two-way audio (microphone and speaker) for direct communication with visitors, with an option for a warning siren. It can be installed from scratch or retrofitted to an existing LEDPRO floodlight, replacing a more-standard PIR switching module. The new unit communicates over Wi-Fi, using the globally trusted Tuya app, so there’s no extra wiring and it really couldn’t be easier to provide customers with sight and sound, and complete confidence that they know what’s going on outside their building. There’s a lot packed into a small and discrete unit, with even an SD card slot if local storage is preferred to cloud-based options. Smart engineering and superior specification do all they can to help ensure against no signal interference.
Camera and audio functions are always available, offering independent or timed or dusk-till-dawn automated lighting. Wi-Fi control of the new camera system is via the proven TuYa app, a global favourite adopted by leading manufacturers, which can also be used to set up the PIR timing for these Timeguard modules. Camera resolution is 1080p, the established standard for video surveillance in businesses and properties. Highdefinition security cameras have achieved incredible success in the ‘consumer’ market as a reliable monitoring option for generalpurpose video surveillance. At 100dB, the speakers allow for clear communication over a good distance, and enough volume for a serious siren warning! Combining the camera and audio with the outdoor LED lighting that any customer concerned about safety and security will also need, gives your customers an all-inone solution. Furthermore, combining Timeguard’s trusted technology and quality control with a global Wi-Fi app that is subject to continuous improvement and debugging, adds up to a serious solution that you can offer your customers with complete confidence. RED ARROW STELLAR DOWNLIGHT
UNICRIMP EARTH ELECTRODE BOX
Change an installation’s colour temperature without removing any fittings from the ceiling, with the new Stellar 3CCT fire rated downlight. Unlike other CCT selectable downlights that only enable colour switching at point of fitting, the Stellar’s CCT switch can be operated from below the ceiling, allowing the installer to adjust colour temperature easily even after the installation is complete. With three colour temperatures to choose from – 3000K, 4000K and 6000K – the installer can dramatically change the look and feel of an installation without any disruption, switching from warm white to natural daylight or cool white at the touch of a button. It can also be paired with a dimmer switch, for even greater flexibility. Stellar’s easy-access CCT selection not only makes it easier to adjust the final finish of an installation but allows for adaptation at a later date should the lighting function need to change: for instance, an office space that’s being changed to a recreational area, or a showroom converted into a customer waiting room.
Unicrimp’s latest new product development activity sees the addition of a 20mm conduit Earth Electrode Box to the company’s growing Earth Rods and Components range. The Earth Electrode Box protects the connection to an earth electrode. It is compatible with 20mm conduit, with provision for brass earth terminal and is suitable for countersunk installation providing easy access for checking. It is supplied with a warning printed lid screwed into the box. Unicrimp first launched its range of earthing rods and component products in 2019 and continues to expand the range to offer installers a one-stop-shop facility for all their earthing component requirements. An effective earthing system is a fundamental requirement of any modern structure or system for both operational and safety reasons. Without such a system, the safety of a structure, the equipment contained within it and its occupants are compromised.

TIME LED LED DOWNLIGHTS When selecting lighting for a kitchen or bathroom project, it’s advisable to look for solutions that are cost-effective over time and consider the total cost of lighting a space, rather than focus on the initial cost per component. The TIME LED Prestige Pro 8W LED CCT Fire Rated Downlight has a 950lm output, whereas seemingly identical cheaper products may only have a 300lm output. The number of Prestige units required to achieve the same lighting effect will be significantly reduced, lowering the project's lighting costs. The downlight has four colour temperatures that are easily controlled by a front-mounted switch and consumers can use this feature to compare the various colour temperature options during installation. This will allow the consumer the opportunity to see the true effect of the different lighting styles so that they can feel completely confident in their final decision. Gary Parker, Senior Technical Manager at the Electrical Contractors’ Association, discusses a new electrical installer safety campaign – “Don’t cut corners! Plan, test, isolate”.
Y
ou wouldn’t drink and drive… so why would you work on a circuit without isolating it? Every year, people working on electrical installations suffer avoidable electric shock and burn injuries. Some of these are, tragically, fatal. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), between 2015 and 2020, 21 fatalities were reported under RIDDOR which were caused by contact with electricity. It is vital that ECA members and the wider electrical contracting industry know that many of these accidents are a direct consequence of installers neglecting proper isolation procedures on low voltage installations (operating at up to 1,000V AC or 1,500V DC). ECA’s new electrical installer safety campaign – “Don’t cut corners! Plan, test, isolate”– aims to raise awareness of this issue, promote safe isolation procedures, and ultimately reduce the number of injuries caused by incorrect isolation of low-voltage circuits.
What is isolation? Isolation means safely establishing a break in the electricity supply to an installation. This also means making sure any inadvertent reconnection is not possible. One of the key principles of safe isolation is that the person carrying out the work should have full control of the point of isolation – if you are working on an installation, you should know exactly what has been done to isolate it, along with the risks that may be involved, as well as what to do in an emergency. Securing the point of isolation should be by a combination of the following methods: ● A padlock, with a unique key or
combination (note that any padlock keys or combinations and removed fuses should be retained by the person carrying out the work) ● A locked switch-room door, or locked distribution box
If you are working on an “installation you should know exactly what has been done to isolate it.
”
● Circuit breakers should be locked off
using an appropriate locking-off clip, with a padlock ● Removal of the relevant circuit fuse (may be used with a lockable fuse insert and padlock) Where more than one person is working on an installation, a multi-lock hasp can be used to prevent access to a main isolator until everyone has completed their work and removed their padlocks from the hasp. In all instances where there is any risk that an electrical supply could be inadvertently switched back on, a clear and visible warning notice should be placed at the point of isolation reading something along the lines of, “Caution Do Not Switch On, System Undergoing Maintenance” or the like.

Employers: what are your obligations? The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 sets out the general health and safety duties of employers, employees and the self-employed. A lot of the responsibility for safe isolation lies with employers. The onus is on them to make sure proper safety procedures are in place on all work. They are responsible for ensuring that employees who work with electrical systems have the right technical knowledge, training and experience to carry out their work safely and competently, and are provided with suitable tools, test equipment and PPE. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 are also key. They require precautions to be taken against the risk of death or personal injury from electricity during work activities. To comply with these Regulations, work on electrical equipment or circuits should always be done with the system
powered down and isolated (known as dead working). ‘Live’ working should only be carried out in very special circumstances where it is unreasonable to work dead, such as fault finding and testing, where the risks are acceptable, and where suitable precautions can be taken against injury. The Provision of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) also say that “every employer shall take appropriate measures to ensure that re-connection of any energy source to work equipment does not expose any person using the work equipment to any risk to his health or safety.” Don’t cut corners! In the coming weeks, ECA will share a range of guidance and materials, including a step-by-step video, to help you, your colleagues and your employees to ensure safe isolation procedures are

followed and the risk of electric shock are kept to an absolute minimum. The electrical sector is one of the most dangerous to work in. HSE’s Health & Safety training brochure says that, in Great Britain, “roughly 2 in every 50 electrical accidents at work result in a fatality, compared with 1 in 500 from other causes. As well as electric shock, other electrically-related injuries arise from burns, arcing and fires. Many of the injuries can take a long while to heal and often result in lifechanging conditions.” At the end of the day, safe isolation could save your life. Don’t cut corners, and don’t leave your, or your employees’, safety to chance. Keep an eye on ECA’s social media channels and ECAtoday.co.uk for more information and resources. We will also soon be launching an animation video outlining 10 key steps to safe isolation… so watch this space!
