hanks in no small measure to the ongoing vaccine rollout, the country is tentatively emerging from the worst of the pandemic.

And whilst there will undoubtedly be further setbacks along the way, the merchant sector can hopefully take solace from the fact that the construction industry is currently at the vanguard of the nation’s economic recovery.

As we discuss in depth throughout the issue, a combination of factors — not least a number of Covid legacy issues and the reality of Brexit — are creating what has been described as a ‘perfect storm’ to undermine the economic bounceback. However, as with the pandemic itself, the industry is straining every sinew to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum and service levels are maintained as much as possible.

Yet whilst the merchant sector was able to demonstrate its flexibility from last March, not least in ramping up digital and ecommerce capabilities to meet demand, an altogether different challenge is beginning to present itself through a noticeable expansion of the modular or off-site housing market.

As reported in the Timber Trade Federation’s weekly update on the 13th July, CEO David Hopkins discussed the ‘Building Better’ alliance of 29 housing associations and local authorities that are working together to “realise the benefits of modern methods of construction”. Supported by the National Housing Federation and Mark Farmer — the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local

“Whilst these numbers are small when set against the Government’s oft-quoted target of 300,000 new homes each year, momentum is gaining for the wider modular and off-site construction market.”

Government’s MMC champion and author of Modernise or Die, the “seminal review” into offsite construction — Building Better has worked with Procurement for Housing to launch “the first MMC framework”, giving its members access to modular housebuilders who can deliver the “highest quality, safe, and sustainable homes”.

David notes that around 5,300 offsite homes are expected to be built through the framework before 2026, starting with an initial batch of 800. Whilst these numbers are small when set against the Government’s oft-quoted target of 300,000 new homes each year, momentum is gaining for the wider modular market. Homes England, for example, is undertaking a six-year study to monitor the lessons from the construction of 1,800 MMC-built homes, whilst the Government announced in April that at least 25% of properties built through its £11.5bn affordable homes programme will need to be constructed using MMC techniques.

housebuilders — for example, CoreHaus in County Durham has opened a new steel frame factory capable of producing 1,000 homes a year; timber frame construction specialist SO Modular has increased its production capacity by 700% to expand from 500 to 3,500 homes per year on a single shift.

In a related news story, Lewes District Council has appointed offsite manufacturer Boutique Modern to a four-year framework agreement (value up to £110m) to deliver “hundreds” of council homes across the district and more widely in East and West Sussex. With the deal “ensuring certainty of cost”, Council Leader Zoe Nicholson said: “Building more council homes that are sustainable and so much cheaper and greener to run is at the top of our agenda.”

With both the material and labour shortages currently highlighting just some of the ‘limitations’ of traditional bricks and mortar construction, one can see how the clamour for alternatives will only grow. Off-site certainly doesn’t have to mean ‘off limits’ for the merchant sector, but the challenge is one the industry simply cannot afford to ignore.

NEWS UPDATE NBG CELEBRATES SUCCESS OF NEW PIM DIGITAL SERVICE

Dynamic data AIM high CMOgroup.com, the online-only retailer of building materials previously known as CMOstores.com, reports it has enjoyed a successful start to life as a publicly traded company after listing on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange over the summer.

CMO raised £45m in a placing of which £27m will be used to further develop and “disrupt the traditional and predominantly offline builders’ merchant market where online penetration is currently calculated at only 4% of a £27bn market.”

Chief Executive Dean Murray said: “This has been a landmark moment in the history of CMO. The business has grown rapidly, taking advantage of its innovative and differentiated model, providing a generation of internetsavvy customers with the broadest range of products as highly competitive prices, delivered when and where they need them.” n Lords Group Trading plc has also announced that it has been listed on the LSE’s AIM market. The move forms a key part of its strategy to “become a £500million turnover building materials distributor group by 2024 as it grows its national presence”.

Clear plan James Hargreaves has launched a new national ‘clearance warehouse’ website — www.jhclearance.com — to sell items, including ex-contract and discontinued stock, from top manufacturers. Plumbing, heating and bathroom products, all new and unused, will be offered at “highly competitive prices” with free delivery (up to 25kg) across the GB mainland.

Sales Director Bill Davies said: “This is a new and exciting venture for us and the appeal to customers comes from the quality and range of the products on the clearance warehouse site. It enables us to move on stock from our warehouse which might be there for any number of reasons, including cancelled orders, excess orders or discontinued lines.”

New products will be added to the site every week and customers can sign up for a newsletter to find out what’s available.

National Buying Group has hailed the early successes of its new Product Information Management (PIM) system. Following a testing and development period with selected NBG Partners and Suppliers, the buying group recently launched PIM with access for the whole of NBG via its internal platform, The Hub, to “centrally collect high quality, accurate and timely product and pricing information from Suppliers”.

Previously, Partners used an active NBG price list or contacted Suppliers regarding individual products and then manually uploaded information. However, PIM is designed to “save valuable time for both Partners and Suppliers with product information instantly available and in a well organised format”.

Partners now have access to more structured, detailed and up-to date product information, live data, collateral and images to support the promotion of products. PIM also allows Partners full access to Suppliers’ product ranges, giving them the opportunity to offer more to customers and increase sales, whilst Suppliers benefit from NBG’s dedicated PIM team and the ability to create a product and pricing catalogue to seamlessly share product information with all Partners at once.

Supplier Knauf Insulation was heavily involved with the PIM project. Its Commercial

Manager John Gaunt said: “The NBG PIM system is going to revolutionise how members can manage and handle their data. We feel that a strong PIM system will lead to better product information being available from manufacturers’ right through to end consumers, whilst providing richer content and ensuring supporting documents are always up to date, wherever they appear — which can only be a positive result for everyone involved.”

NBG Managing Director Nick Oates added: “The development of PIM is testament to NBG’s commitment to developing progressive technology solutions to improve their Suppliers and Partner experience. PIM is having a significant benefit to the whole group by streamlining the solutions previously used.

“We look forward to hearing further feedback from our Partners and Suppliers who are making the most of the PIM system and how we can build on this feedback and continue to improve the NBG experience for all.”

Zero carbon plan for BMF The Builders Merchants Federation has signed up to the SME Climate Commitment and pledged to take action to halve its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2040.

The announcement followed the publication of the United Nations’ landmark scientific report confirming the devastating impact of human activity on the earth’s climate and the immediate need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to limit global warming.

BMF CEO John Newcomb said: “Climate change poses a threat to the economy, nature and society at large, and reducing carbon emissions is something businesses of every size must act upon. The BMF is supporting and promoting the Construction Leadership Council’s ConstructZero programme and encouraging our members to become Net Zero Business Champions.

“But it is just as important for us to take proactive steps to reduce our own carbon impact as well as supporting our members on

their path to net zero. We encourage every member business, no matter what their size, to take action now.”

Simple first steps implemented by the BMF include increased use of LED and movement activated lighting, using paper rather than plastic wrappers to mail out its magazine and year books, moving from individual desk printers to larger shared printers, and using sustainable promotional materials for conferences and events.

The BMF is also investigating financial incentives available for green initiatives to support medium to longer term objectives including the installation of electric vehicle charging points, solar panels, and changes to the current heating and ventilation systems. n The next BMF Sustainability

TTF OUTLINES CONTINUING INCREASE IN TIMBER IMPORTS

The Timber Trade Federation (TTF) reports that the volume of the main timber and panel products imported in May 2021 is nearly 58% higher than May 2020. This comes as the total volume of imported timber and panel products in the five months to May 2021 exceeds 5 million m3, which is 1.5 million m3 higher than the same period in 2020.

The growth in May 2021 over the previous year follows on from the record 103% growth in April 2021 over April 2020.

Softwood is a major driver of this growth with 3.29 million m3 of softwood imported during this time, which is about 52% higher than in the same period last year and 13% higher than in 2019. Hardwood import volumes over the five months to May 2021 were 18% higher than 2020 showing a strong bounce back, but at a total of 0.2 million m3, they are yet to exceed 2019 imports figures.

A similar story to hardwood imports can be seen across both plywood imports and particleboard imports. OSB and MDF import volumes have however seen significant growth.

David Hopkins, TTF Chief Executive, said: “RMI and new build housing are the main drivers of softwood imports, and in both areas,

there has been unprecedented growth — so unsurprisingly timber has followed. The softwood sector is working at full pace to meet this incredible level of demand and to help support the realisation of the CPA summer forecast (www.rdr.link/me002) for double digit growth in the construction industry — as well as the UK’s economic recovery from Covid-19.

“As the pandemic eases and normal spending patterns return, with consumers spending more on going out and travelling and less on home improvement, we do expect that some of the tension in the market will be relieved. However there remain many unknowns which may constrain growth in the market. This includes rising demand from a global construction ‘supercycle’, a shortage of raw materials, skilled workers, and disrupted supply chains.

“This makes it incredibly hard to predict the exact time we will see a resumption of more ‘regular’ activities in the UK economy, but we are confident that by Q4 a clearer picture will be formed of the timber market.”

Strategic investment

W.Howard Group has moved into a brandnew head office in Glazebury, Warrington as part of the next stage of its continuing growth and expansion. Based at Albion Park and on the same site as the Manchester Distribution Centre (MDC), the new office brings a large part of the company’s UK operation together in one place. Said to have

been developed with customers and distributors in mind, the new site also offers fully equipped meeting rooms and a Training Centre.

The relocation has additionally allowed the firm to redevelop its former HQ at Astley into enhanced and Covid-secure welfare facilities for its manufacturing employees.

Insulation station Actis states that with the popularity of extensions and loft conversions “almost literally going through the roof ”, merchants are reporting a huge rise in sales of insulation products in general and of the company’s products in particular.

For example, Jewson Sales Manager Brad Ellis said: “Insulation and insulating membranes have been flying out of the door over the past year, with a current loft promotion across stores in the south of England generating even more interest.”

Brad, with an area that covers ten branches in Surrey and Hampshire, added: “We have seen a huge uplift in sales for loft conversions and extensions in the area. We have purpose-built loft displays in dedicated branches to showcase our extended loft offering, which has proved popular with our core target audience as well as attracting new customers to the branches who are keen to know more about the products we stock.”

Providing a perspective from a different quarter of the industry, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has recently published its Q2 2021 UK Construction & Infrastructure Monitor.

T

he construction supply chain struggled to keep up with increasing new housing and infrastructure across the UK, the RICS Construction and Infrastructure Survey has found for Q2 2021. With total workloads showing strong growth after +38% (net balance) of respondents reported a rise, there were also problems reported with the cost of materials and a shortage of staff to deliver projects.

Growth in the private residential sector continued to lead the construction market, with +50% of respondents reporting an increase in activity (up from +39% in the previous quarter and the strongest reading in the last six years). Infrastructure works also saw a rise, with a net balance of +45% reporting an increase (up from +34% in the previous quarter), with new energy projects in particular being cited as the area behind this growth.

While respondents indicated the construction sector is now broadly recovering well from the Covid-19 pandemic, constraints on the market’s return to normality were also becoming apparent. For example, 82% of respondents pointed to a shortage of materials hampering the market during Q2, up from 57% previously. Moreover, the cost of

materials is expected to increase by nearly 10% over the next twelve months, with these projections running ahead of the 7% growth anticipated for tender prices.

The Q2 survey also picked up concerns around labour shortages — both for skilled labour and ‘whitecollar’ roles — with a net balance of

As an example, in the case of bricklayers this has jumped from 34% to 58% while for

carpenters it has increased from 33% to 55%.

Looking over the next year, respondents predict construction workloads will continue to gather pace, with a net balance of +55% saying more activity is expected (the highest since early 2016), with new infrastructure and residential expected to continue leading.

Simon Rubinsohn, RICS Chief Economist, commented: “The tone to much of the feedback received in the Q2 Construction and Infrastructure Monitor is pretty upbeat with new business enquiries picking up smartly.

Yet it is abundantly clear that a couple of issues present big challenges. Most notably at this point, the availability of building materials stands out as a key problem for respondents to the RICS survey.

“But almost as significantly, labour and skills are increasingly being cited as obstacles for businesses looking to build out existing commitments or embark on new projects.

Unsurprisingly against this backdrop, some concern is being expressed about rising construction costs.” n For more detail on the RICS

Confidence remains high but problems still present The results of the latest survey suggest supply shortages are easing to an extent, but are still contributing to restricted sales for merchants.

M

erchants’ confidence in the market and in their business is very strong and sales expectations are high. Material supply problems are easing slightly, however concerns over shortages of drivers and rising prices continue.

The Pulse, by MRA Research, is a monthly tracking survey of merchants’ confidence and prospects. Telephone interviewing took place between 1st and 5th July 2021.

Materials supply Almost nine out of 10 merchants say ‘All’ or ‘Most’ of their suppliers are currently able to supply them. The proportion of merchants saying ‘All’ improved significantly in July (44%) compared to June (18%). Regional merchants and branches in the North and Scotland are most affected.

Merchants were asked the extent to which their business and customers have been affected by supply problems on a scale of 1 (not at all) to 7 (very badly). The average score of 4.18 is marginally higher than June’s average (4.16), suggesting little change in supply concerns month-on-month.

However, the average score has increased more notably since March (3.89), with 21% of merchants reporting in July that they have been badly affected compared to 13% in March — Chart 1.

Sales expectations July’s sales expectations eased compared to June but stayed positive with a net +24% of merchants forecasting improved sales — Chart 2.

Expectations were strongest among National branches (net +43%).

Of the merchants anticipating sales growth month-on-month, 30% expected sales to grow over 10% in July compared to June.

Year on year, merchants’ high expectations have eased but remain strong (net +56%) — also Chart 2. Merchants in the North (+91%) and Scotland (+88%) were most positive. More National and Regional merchants (+68% and +58% respectively) expected higher sales than Independent outlets (+35%).

Confidence in the market Confidence in the market increased in July compared with June.

A net +5% of merchants were more confident month-on-month.

Regionally, merchants in the North and Midlands were most confident (+23% and +21% respectively). By merchant type, Nationals were most confident (+30%).

Year-on-year, confidence in the market improved slightly in July compared to the previous month’s survey (net +33%) — Chart 5.

Confidence in their business Merchants’ confidence in the prospects for their own business increased in July compared to June (net +39%). Merchants in the Midlands (+58%) and South (+45%) were most confident regionally.

Merchants’ year-on-year confidence in their own business eased slightly compared to the higher level in the previous month’s survey but was still strong at a net +59% — also Chart 5. Merchants in the Midlands (+67%) and Nationals (+68%) were most confident.

Sales expectations for the next three months (July to September) dipped slightly compared to the previous month’s survey (net +33%). More National merchants (+49%) predict higher sales than Regionals (+30%) and Independents (+13%).

Of those expecting sales to increase quarter-on-quarter, 44% forecast growth of 10-20% and a further 38% expect sales to grow by 5-9%.

Whilst merchants’ sales expectations for the next six months have been easing since March, they remain strong (net +35%) — Chart 4. Those in the North are most positive (+91%).

Of those forecasting improved sales in the next six months, almost 9 in 10 merchants expect sales to grow by more than 5%.

Forty four percent predict growth of 10% or more.

Change and transformation A number of significant transactions have continued to shake up the established structure of the merchant sector since the turn of the year, from the turbo-charged acquisitional activity of businesses like Grant & Stone to Travis Perkins plc confirming the sale of its Plumbing & Heating business. And this pattern of transformation shows no sign of letting up, with two major deals revealed since the last issue of PBM went to press — Grafton Group plc divested its ‘Traditional Merchanting Business’, comprised of brands such as Buildbase, whilst Saint-Gobain announced the sale of Graham.

oreshadowed by the announcement in April 2021 of a strategic review of its business, Grafton announced earlier in the summer that it had entered into an agreement to divest its Traditional Merchanting Business in Great Britain to Huws Gray “for an enterprise value of £520 million”. Under the deal, Grafton will retain “freehold properties with development potential” that have a market value of circa £25 million.

With the 138 branches of Buildbase perhaps the most prominent brand to be sold under the deal, Grafton’s GB Merchanting Business also includes PDM Buildbase in Scotland (25 branches), Civils and Lintels (21), NDI (6), The Timber Group (6), Bathroom Distribution Group (2) and Lloyd Worrall (5).

In the year to 31st December 2020, the Business reported revenue of £828.2 million (2019: £1.02 billion) and adjusted operating profit of £18.8 million (2019: £33.3 million).

Gross assets were £497.2 million. Notification of the transaction has been passed to the Competition and Markets Authority with the divestment expected to close by the end of the first quarter of 2022.

Grafton’s comprehensive strategic review concluded that “exiting this segment of the building materials distribution market in Great Britain” would enable the Group to optimise shareholder value. Moving forward, it will continue to develop its Selco Builders Warehouse branch network and its other specialist GB distribution and manufacturing businesses that “have been the focus of significant investment and value creation over recent years”.

Completion of this transaction is also said to enable the Group to focus on its international development strategy “which will be a key priority over the coming years”.

Huws Gray’s Founder and Chairman Terry Owen said: “We are thoroughly excited and feel extremely privileged to be able to acquire such a well-respected name in the industry. This has given us the opportunity to more than double our branch network and substantially increases our geographical footprint. We look forward to working alongside our new colleagues and continuing on our exciting journey.”

Established in Glasgow in 1936 and now operating from around 130 branches and with c.840 employees, Graham generated a turnover of approximately £220million in 2020. The majority of the branches, as well as the Graham brand name and website, will be divested to UK Plumbing Supplies, and a smaller number of branches will be divested to Wolseley.

A statement from Saint-Gobain noted: “The transactions are expected to be completed over the coming weeks and are part of Saint-Gobain’s continued portfolio optimisation strategy to enhance the Group’s growth and profitability profile.”

Travis Perkins plc 2021 Half Year results Reporting for the six months ended 30 June 2021, Travis Perkins plc described an “excellent operational performance” in a period that saw the execution of the “successful Wickes demerger” and its Plumbing & Heating business sold to H.I.G. Capital for £325m (with completion expected in Q3).

The Group described a “robust revenue performance driven by strong operational delivery and broad-based, RMI led recovery”. Like for like revenue in continuing businesses grew by 44.1% and was 14.5% ahead of a ‘more realistic benchmark’ of 2019.

Adjusted operating profit of £164m (2020: £17m) was up 14% vs 2019, resulting from “higher volumes with solid gross margins, improved customer proposition and restructuring benefits”.

Strong revenue and operating profit performance in Merchanting was reported, following the “decisive actions” to refocus the business as a consequence of the pandemic. More currently, a “challenging period” of inflation and materials shortages are being “navigated well”.

The update also noted that The Group “continues to invest in both physical networks and technology to meet changing customer needs and exploit market opportunities”. Larger branches, with greater capability, are being added to the General Merchant portfolio while the rollout of Toolstation continues at pace in both the UK and Europe — as evidenced by the recent opening of its 500th UK branch in New Malden.

Nick Roberts, Chief Executive Officer, said: “I am delighted with our performance during the first half of 2021. To have executed our planned strategic portfolio actions whilst delivering an excellent trading performance in ever changing market conditions is testament to the hard work and capability of our colleagues across the Group.”

MKM Building Supplies Expansion in Scotland The recent acquisition of Spey Valley Timber & Builders Merchants follows a period of significant growth in Scotland for MKM, with the business also unveiling new branches in Inverness (launched 12th July) and Peterhead (to be opened in September). The addition of Spey Valley, which was founded in the 1980s and operates throughout Aviemore and the wider Scottish Highlands, grows MKM’s Scottish network to seventeen branches.

Bradfords Building Supplies Mental Health Support Training for Managers Bradfords Building Supplies has launched ‘Mental Health Awareness for Managers’, an updated workshop programme being deployed across the breadth of the business’ branch management to provide enhanced support for its 830 staff.

The builders’ merchant, reputedly the oldest in the UK, was already an early adopter of mental health awareness training, which included the appointment of mental health first aiders across the business. This new programme is aimed at addressing the evolving needs of its people following the pandemic, and will see over 70 managers attend a series of interactive workshops.

CEO David Young said: “As a familyowned business, people are at the heart of what we do, and we know that many of our employees and customers are likely to be impacted in some way by poor mental health. The world has obviously changed a huge amount over the course of the last 18 months, not to mention how we as a business have evolved, including taking on a host of new industry talent.

“We have a responsibility to ensure our managers, especially at branch level, are as best equipped as they can be in order to look after their people.”

David continued: “This training is focused on teaching managers about the signs to look out for, and then directing staff members to the wide range of resources available to support them. Emergency stop W ith various coronavirus restrictions either eased or lifted completely over the summer, the somewhat inevitable rise in positive cases led to a huge increase in people being notified by the Covid app and told to self-isolate. Whilst the app has now been tweaked and the self-isolation rules for the double vaccinated are being changed, the ‘pingdemic’ was not the only reason behind a labour shortage that was affecting the industry’s ability to meet what BMF CEO John Newcomb described as “the biggest demand for building products in more than 30 years.”

The fact that many European citizens, so well represented throughout the construction ecosystem, have been leaving Britain in the wake of Brexit has compounded the issues related to Covid-19.

Difficulties are being reported throughout the supply chain, from manufacturing to skilled and unskilled workers on site, whilst the Construction Leadership Council’s Product Availability Group has cited a lack of labour as ‘a rising concern’.

Indicative of a significant problem for the merchant sector in particular, the CLC noted that all regions reported that “hauliers, HGV and LGV drivers are in short supply and very difficult to recruit”. Indeed, figures from the Road Haulage Association show an existing deficit of 100,000 lorry drivers (across all sectors) which has been compounded by an estimated 15,000 European drivers leaving the UK and the cancellation of 30,000 HGV driving tests during the pandemic

Faced with these concerns, as well as struggling to secure agency cover, the BMF has reported that many members were trying to retrain existing staff into driving roles — however, the limited availability of test slots have been preventing staff from taking HGV driving tests.

In news that made the national press and the mainstream TV channels, the construction sector boom is being tempered by widespread delays and product shortages. With the disruption attributed variously to Covid, the socalled ‘pingdemic’ and Brexit, a central thread has been a shortfall in drivers able to transport goods across the country. and booking tests has become an issue, with demand meaning months of waiting.”

BMF South West Regional Chairman, David Young of Bradfords Building Supplies, added: “We have 16 LGV driver vacancies at the moment. We’re struggling to recruit and also no agency cover is available due to

The Government has made a number of proposals, including implementing a short-term relaxation of the rules for how many hours lorry drivers can work as a temporary stop-gap measure — strongly condemned by bodies such as the British Safety Council — whilst it has pledged to reduce the testing backlog. However, Logistics UK’s Policy Director Elizabeth de Jong cautioned: “It is good to see the urgent focus on increased HGV driver testing with DVSA, but without targets and a workable timeline, this is simply a statement of intent.”

Speaking earlier in the summer and outlining the ongoing concerns of the merchant sector, Jim Parlato, a Director at Browns Builders Merchant and BMF East Midlands Regional Chairman, said: “Drivers are our biggest concern at present. We have two of our warehouse and yard operatives taking their tests shortly but getting courses

“We do have 22 internal drivers being trained up but there are not enough test slots available so this is taking longer than normal. Suppliers to builders’ merchants have also been hit by the shortfall, resulting in restrictions on some products and failed deliveries at short notice.”

The BMF is now compiling information across its member network to share with Government and look towards a solution to address the issue.

With the ending of Covid-19 restrictions in England and significant easing elsewhere around the UK, face to face and ‘in person’ meetings are slowly returning. Meetings with suppliers and customer events are beginning to accelerate once more at branch level, whilst September sees the return of a number of larger scale industry gatherings such as exhibitions and conferences — most notably, the NMBS Exhibition and BMF Members Day.

NMBS Exhibition, 8-9 September

erchant and supplier members are set to descend upon the Coventry Building Society Arena (the new name for the Ricoh Arena) in great numbers for this year’s NMBS Exhibition. Despite the easing of restrictions, extra steps have been taken to ensure it is as Covid safe as possible for everyone who attends, with social distancing and wider aisles in place.

Additionally, the event will be held over two days for the first time to allow as many people as possible to attend safely. Opening times will be 8:30am till 5pm on the first day, and 8:30am till 3:30pm on the second day.

A long established presence on the calendar, the NMBS Exhibition is the biggest trading event of its kind within the builders’ merchant industry, typically bringing together more than 1,000 members and suppliers to network and discuss stock and new product ranges. The facility’s 360 stands are now sold out, so members will be able to talk to more than 270 suppliers and benefit

from the extra rebates — ranging from 1% to 15%, depending on the supplier — available on the day.

To minimise unnecessary paperwork and comply with Covid restrictions, this year all member orders will be handled through a new Exhibition App that has been developed for the show. Anna heads the economic intelligence team which produces and analyses the CBI’s economic surveys and provides the CBI’s macroeconomic forecast. Ten-25 Software, celebrating 40 years of serving merchants this year, has welcomed two new team members as part of an ongoing expansion programme.

Having spent over 20 years in training, consultancy and mechanical engineering, Darryl Rabôt has joined as Senior IT Trainer and will be working with customers to “facilitate smooth onboarding, system implementation and training”.

With over 30 years’ experience in the housing sector, Rachel Cable has also joined the team as Executive Assistant to Managing Director Ian Oldrey.

Revitalised IoBM looks to next generation After several years struggling with limited resources, the merger of the Institute of Builders Merchants (IoBM) with the BMF provides the additional support needed to revitalise the professional body for all those working in the merchant industry.

I

f the IoBM is to succeed and grow it must have the support of the next generation of business leaders, and it is now led by a new management committee that gives far greater prominence to youth.

The six person committee includes the Chair and Vice Chair of BMF Young Merchants as well as two existing Institute Board members and two BMF directors.

At their first management meeting they agreed that all BMF Young Merchants will be automatically enrolled within the Institute during its first 12 months. This brings in a more diverse cohort, all under the age of 40 and with an equal split of male and female professionals.

They also set a target of 1,000 members within the first year and are encouraging larger merchants to buy into the benefits of membership and get on board. Going forward, their aims are even more ambitious — over 10,000 members and an aspiration to become a Chartered Institute.

Industry reaction to the merger, agreed back in April, has been overwhelmingly positive. As well as attracting new members, the Institute welcomes applications from past members and has enhanced the membership category for manufacturers and suppliers to the merchant industry that support the IoBM’s professional training ethos.

Corporate Supplier members will help embrace the entire building materials sector within the Institute and their fees will support training and development. In return they may nominate two employees as IoBM contacts within their business, and

the Institute will include details of any free CPD or merchant training programmes offered by Corporate Supplier members.

This category has rapidly gained support, with the NMBS and five leading suppliers, Aco, Knauf Insulation, the Keystone Group, Mannok and Reisser, amongst the first to sign up.

Centre forward Earlier this year, the Talasey Group was selected by Joseph Parr (Middlesbrough) as the main supplier for its newly refurbished Landscape Centre in Stockton.

pened in the spring, the new Joseph Parr Landscape Centre marks a spectacular transformation of the existing facility into a showroom billed by the merchant as a “unique site like no other in the North East”. With a huge range of products on show — including paving, decking, artificial grass, decorative gravel, fencing, doors, hardwood flooring and garden furniture — the predominantly indoor area allows customers to browse and shop “in a warm and dry environment”.

Talasey was selected by the merchant to be its lead partner on the project and, with co-branded signage in place, the Landscape Centre is said to be the first of its kind for the supplier which has now been trading nationwide for over 17 years.

Dave Anderson, Managing Director at Joseph Parr Middlesbrough, said: “Joseph Parr and Talasey have worked closely for a number of years. We have always promoted a good range of products, but we have together taken this cooperation to a new level unique in our industry.

ver the last 18 months, there has been a significant increase in demand for building materials with landscaping one of the categories under the biggest stress, due to the considerable uplift in gardening projects undertaken throughout lockdown. Indeed, recent research shows that upgrades to the garden and outside areas are high on the list of home improvement plans for many Brits as part of a wider renovation boom that is predicted to top £135 billion over the next 12 months.

However, we continue to face extended material shortages for a wide variety of building products, including timber and plastics. This is due to a multitude of factors including reduced manufacturing output throughout COVID-19 in addition to the implications of the Brexit trade deal and major haulage shortages as a consequence of the reduced availability of drivers.

Furthermore, high profile infrastructure projects including HS2 are also impacting the availability of necessary building materials such as concrete.

Partnership approach All of these factors have created an extremely challenging market to operate within. And whilst selling everything that you are

producing is usually a very positive situation for a manufacturer and our merchant customers, at Supreme Concrete we certainly don’t feel like we’re winning in the current climate.

The fact remains that until all of our customers are receiving the levels of materials they need to meet their business requirements, none of us are where we want to be at the moment.

We understand the importance of assured supply and acknowledge that, due to all the factors outlined previously, this is a major issue affecting both ourselves at Supreme and the wider market. Supporting our merchant network in meeting their commitments is our number one priority, and we are working around the clock to do all we can to try and meet the demands of our customers.

This includes continuing to make strategically-led decisions to support the manufacture of landscaping solutions that are experiencing the highest demand,

including the application of strategic shift pattern changes within our factories. This optimises every single hour to increase manufacturing output, whilst operating in a COVID-secure way to continue to protect the health and well-being of our employees, suppliers and customers.

We have also continued to undertake significant investment throughout the business, with increased manufacturing capabilities, range rationalisation and enhanced product quality protocols being implemented to help increase capacity without compromising on quality.

Concrete is king This partnership approach includes working in closer collaboration with merchants to identify the product ranges currently in highest demand, including new fencing and paving as gardening projects top homeowners’ priorities.

Patio preparation Homeowners’ desire to upgrade external areas such as terraces and patios saw a massive boom during last year’s spring-summer lockdowns and there’s no sign of this slackening off. Setcrete Brand Manager Peter Wilson outlines the importance of suitable sub floor preparation products to ensure the optimum results, and explains how merchants can capitalise from the sustained demand.

O

ne of the specific trends driving the growth in garden space upgrades is the notion of extending the internal living space through bi-fold or sliding doors to an external patio, using porcelain floor tiles to achieve a seamless visual transition from the inside to the outside.

Porcelain tiles are one of the few floor finishes that work equally well externally as internally. And in addition to delivering a smart, high quality aesthetic, porcelain tiles are able to withstand the varying seasonal weather conditions experienced in the UK whilst also being easy to clean and maintain.

However, achieving ‘the look’ requires perfect preparation of the subfloor base to ensure the external floor maintains the aesthetic quality of the interior.

To deliver a professional, high quality finish when installing tiles externally, the same level of subfloor preparation is required as would be used for interior installations. Specifically, the subfloor base needs to be as smooth and level as possible.

Internally, job-specific levelling compounds are used to create a smooth finish over the sand/cement subfloor screed.

The same methodology is required for external areas, but requires an exterior grade levelling compound — which is why Setcrete Exterior was developed.

It is the speed of preparation and drying, combined with the integrity of the levelling compound when set and cured that is giving rise to its popularity and the consequent increase in demand. Given the cost of porcelain tiles, builders want a quick, worry-free way of achieving a perfect base that gives them the foundation on which to create a superb finish.

How did you get into the industry and to your current position?

I have been building software solutions all my working life; including cofounding and developing another merchant software solution. As Intact Product Director, I now spend my time with merchant customers observing how they use our software, listening to their challenges and driving product improvements based on their valued feedback. I also spend a lot of time in a consulting role and enjoy my varied job.

Being close to merchants ensures I truly understand the challenges they face.

How do you feel the industry has changed in recent years?

From a software point of view, we’re seeing more and more customers looking for more pertinent information from their ERP system. This is driven by a hugely competitive and fluctuating market which makes it more important than ever to have a ‘finger on the pulse’.

But the way customers expect to trade with merchants is also changing. Whether that’s online or via Apps, today’s customers want to trade with you as efficiently as possible and technology can help you here.

We know merchants often struggle to get on board with the latest technologies or to fully leverage their software investment as it can be technically challenging for them. We believe it’s our responsibility to develop the systems they need to get ahead and to support them in maximising those technologies.

What are the current challenges facing the merchant sector?

Whilst supply shortages have been well documented, merchants have never

been busier with many customers seeing record months. The challenge for merchants now is ensuring they have the right stock to satisfy demand whilst also keeping an eye on fluctuating prices. As highlighted earlier, this is where visibility of information is key.

And agility will be rewarded. At Intact, we talk about flexibility all the time — just ask anyone who’s been in one of our presentations! But that flexibility is what allows businesses to quickly adapt to periods of change while coping with the nuances of their business processes and decisions.

What are the current challenges facing your company?

Intact is growing fast. And with that comes its own challenges – finding the right people to join our growing team, ensuring our products continue to meet and pre-empt future merchant requirements and always, always, delighting our customers.

Thankfully, our growth strategy anticipated these challenges and over the last year or so we’ve created new customer-focused business units, developed an online learning hub and filled key roles with personnel from the ERP space.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I’ve always viewed software development as a creative process rather than a technical one. Lots of people can code, but there is an art to creating good solutions.

If it’s awkward or challenging for me to demonstrate something, then you can bet it’s harder again for the end user. So, I use that as an incentive to do better.

My role spans that product input and customer interaction, so I look at solutions from both angles and it makes every day different and a challenge… in a good way!

GARDENS & LANDSCAPING On 14 May, the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) announced the first C02nstructZero Business Leaders with ACO Water Management amongst the 14 chosen companies to be labelled as forerunners in sustainability and renewable practices. Adam Cane, Knowledge Manager and Sustainability Lead at ACO Water Management, explains how merchants can join the race to achieve net zero.

The road to net zero T

he UK Government has targeted 2050 as the year in which the nation will achieve net zero. The result has been a host of companies racing to show how they will meet their own targets, often posting annual updates on their green credentials.

What’s more, the race to net zero has stepped up in 2021. Indeed, the first 14 C02nstructZero Business Leaders were announced in May, showcasing those companies committed to achieving net zero in the construction industry. Among the initial 14 were four members of the Builders Merchants Federation — ACO Technologies, APP Wholesale, Bradfords Building Supplies and Travis Perkins plc (more BMF members have followed in the ensuing months, including businesses such as Ibstock, Hanson, JCB and Knauf Insulation).

The good news for merchants which are not already Business Leaders is that the initiative is ongoing, and it is expected that even more businesses will join this growing

list over the next few months. The initiative enables companies to be role models in the construction industry’s change programme, demonstrating a commitment towards the sector’s drive to reduce carbon emissions in the delivery and operation of the built environment.

However, not all companies are at the same point of their journey and may find the prospect of achieving net zero quite daunting. This is where small, incremental changes can make a big difference and, more importantly, can be implemented now.

One of the main reasons ACO Technologies became the first construction products manufacturer to join the initiative was its 31% reduction in carbon emissions between 2015-2019. The way in which ACO achieved this reduction can be easily replicated by other companies, including merchants, such as: ● Ensuring that sustainable business practices are compliant with ISO 14001 and align with relevant UN sustainability goals; ● Updating electricity systems in commercial and manufacturing settings, including upgrading lights to LEDs and incorporating a renewable electricity tariff; and ● Improved recycling streams — it’s surprisingly easy to improve the recycling rate across a business, if all colleagues commit.

While each organisation has a different road to net zero, there is a need to ensure products manufactured support the environment. ACO, for example, has developed a product range devoted to supporting wildlife and biodiversity and its wildlife range includes tunnel systems to safely allow animals to cross busy roads, kerbed pathways for amphibians to get around grates, and refuges for small animals.

These products are designed to limit negative impact on wild animals' habitats, protecting the environment from preventable damage.

The use of geometric science has also reduced the requirement for concrete haunching around product, saving 11kg of CO2 per linear metre installed of ACO MonoDrain. Additionally, products are tested

to ensure the most efficient polymer concrete mix is used, thus lowering embedded carbon.

Navigating a route to net zero Now is the time for organisations to analyse their practices and identify all the positive changes that can be made to help them grow sustainably. Adopting science-based targets (SBT) is another route merchants can take, allowing them to create both short- and medium-term strategies to reduce carbon emissions. Crucially, they can also be measured against the GHC (greenhouse gas) Protocol.

Merchants should think about the SBTs they can realistically adopt. There are a number that can affect the carbon impact of a merchant, including adding electric vehicles to company car policies, reviewing heating systems and switching over to a 100% renewable energy tariff.

Some of the changes can be made today, such as moving to paperless processes, while others need forward-planning. However,

Construction is at the vanguard of the post-pandemic recovery, yet the sector is blighted by materials shortages and supply chain issues. Imperial Bricks reveals how it has invested to ensure it can bring more stock to the market.

Increased capacity I

mperial Bricks reports that it has invested £1.5million in a move to new, larger premises and the development of state-of the-art machinery. The company’s new, four-acre site in Bridgnorth, Shropshire — in addition to operating two other storage facilities situated across the country — means the business is now said to have the capacity to stock 12 million bricks in the UK. Furthermore, the new machinery has “more than doubled” the processing / finishing capacity of the firm’s reclamation brick ranges and also allows for further new product development.

As part of the move, Imperial has invested in new facilities dedicated to the large-scale production of tumbled bricks. The company states that this is the first facility of its kind, which processes its new traditionally-made bricks to “achieve indistinguishable alternatives to genuine reclaimed bricks, which can be difficult to source in volume”.

Bricks from this range have already been used by developers such as Millwood Homes — supplied by Parker Building Supplies — on a number of new build housing developments in the South-East.

Jason Hughes, Managing Director of Imperial Bricks, said: “We can now offer merchants new brick ranges and complementary products, as well as securing the reliable supply for which Imperial is recognised. (This means) merchants can sell more bricks and a wider choice, and differentiate their branches.”

The move was reportedly planned for several years and comes in response to growing demand for Imperial Bricks’ range of over 70 handmade, pressed and engineering bricks. The bricks are manufactured with exclusive partner factories in Europe and Asia, with Imperial working with its partners over many years to develop new ranges. As above, many of its

bricks are processed by machine or hand at its UK premises to add authentic features such as weathering, sooting, or a reclamation finish.

The company recently announced a new exclusive partnership with a brick manufacturer in Turkey in a move said to provide “assurance of quality and year-round capacity for seven of its most popular brick colours and styles”. The plant meets all of the internationally recognised standards for ethical and quality

manufacturing and the “sole supply” contract covers bricks made to Imperial’s specification, which are designed to match authentic regional brickwork found across the UK. The brick blends include Country Blend, Farmhouse Orange, Imperial Blend, Olde Reclamation Clamp, Reclamation Shire Blend, Urban Weathered and Tudor Multi.

These can now be identified as Imperial’s by a ‘stamp’ of its crown logo, found in the frog of the brick, which the company is introducing throughout 2021 and 2022.

The new stamp means merchants, architects, developers and self-builders can identify genuine Imperial products, as a mark of the “quality and ethical manufacturing assurance” that comes with the brand.

Jason explained: “Some of our most popular handmade brick ranges are the first to feature the crown branding, and we’ll be

rolling this out across our entire brick portfolio over the next year to protect our ongoing success and the growing demand for high-quality handmade bricks.”

Of the new partnership in Turkey, Jason said: “Imperial only works with factories on a long term, exclusive supply basis. We decline to work with manufacturers / factories who after working on product development look to supply multiple companies in the UK market, so on this basis we have moved to the new facility which meets our rigorous supply criteria.

“The transfer of the original development manager to the new facility ensures Imperial has a continual product pipeline in place, and innovative product development will be continued. This new partnership will afford us the opportunity to broaden our product portfolio into the wider built environment.”

Over the past 10 years, Imperial Bricks has launched a range of traditional

handmade bricks to match each region of the UK. Driving change S trengthening its status as “one the most sustainable manufacturers of building products in the UK”, Ibstock plc has been selected by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) as part of its CO2nstructZero campaign. Launched earlier this year, the initiative enables companies to be role models in the “industry change programme” and being named as a CO2nstructZero Business Champion recognises the commitment the business has made to “reduce carbon emissions in the delivery and operation of the built environment”.

Andrew Griffith MP, the UK’s Net Zero Business Champion and Chair of the CO2nstructZero Advisory Board, said at the time of the scheme’s launch: “This is a hugely significant moment for the UK’s construction industry. As we look towards COP26 later this year, the whole sector must work together to drive real change. Recent examples of this include the construction of a 4.9MW solar farm at its Leicestershire headquarters, procuring 100% of its electricity from renewable sources and confirming investment in a pathfinder project to achieve what the business believes will become the world’s first Net Zero brick factory in the West Midlands — reducing process carbon emissions by circa 50% with the remainder offset for scope 1 and 2 emissions.

Whilst the pandemic has dominated the news and much of the day-to-day aspects of running a business, the last 18 months have also seen numerous organisations making significant strides along their path towards greater sustainability. PBM hears from Ibstock, which has recently been named as one of the Construction Leadership Council’s CO2nstructZero Business Champions.

The news comes shortly after Ibstock launched its latest Sustainability Report for 2020. FORTERRA WILNECOTE INVESTMENT Forterra is investing £27million into its brick factory in Wilnecote, Staffordshire.

The funding will see a modernisation of the facility, which has been in operation for 30 years, bringing it up to current standards of efficiency and sustainability.

With an expected product output boost of 20%, the redevelopment will include a new kiln, dryers and handling equipment installed and will allow the factory to create a wider array of high-quality brick products, including increasing production of the famous Staffordshire Blue Brick.

Stephen Harrison, Chief Executive, said: “In keeping with our strategic focus on manufacturing excellence, our new facility in Wilnecote will allow us to respond to the increasing demand for bricks as the rate of housebuilding continues to accelerate nationwide and crucially balance this with a greater reach into the commercial and specifications markets.”

Work on the factory is expected to begin in late 2022, with the factory closing for around nine months to allow for construction. The upgraded factory will re-open in 2023.

The business notes that it is also working on a £95million project to transform its Desford site in Leicestershire, into the “largest and most energy efficient brick factory in Europe” which will see it double its capacity to 180 million bricks annually — enough to build 24,000 average-sized family homes.

Cut to the chase As demand for laminates has surged, Colin Knight, National Sales Manager at Saint-Gobain Abrasives, discusses how the selling the right tools will help the trade deliver a smooth, clean cut every time.

W

hen working with laminates, one of the biggest issues that tradespeople face is the risk of chipping and damaging the surface — and as this material is often used in areas that are highly visible and used daily, these are mistakes that will certainly not go unnoticed.

The demand for laminates has rocketed over the past year — particularly for Antimicrobial High-Pressure Laminates (HPL), Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) and wooden composites for flooring, countertops and wall partitions. With homeowners seeking high-end finishes without the hefty price tag, laminate materials are overtaking their solid wood counterparts. And although in many cases they are easier to clean, maintain and install, they are also more at risk of damage during the cutting process.

So how can tradespeople ensure a smooth, quality cut every time? Well, it’s

mainly down to the tools used as melamine-faced boards, plywood, laminated panels and HPL sheets all require a specific type of saw blade.

Ensuring that the cutting equipment being used is suitable for the application is critical, as saw blades have different shaped, angled teeth for different materials.

When your customers are shopping for circular blades for laminates, a Triple Chid Grind (TCG) blade is usually a good place to start.

When looking closely at a TCG blade, it’s easy to identify that the teeth aren’t all identical but actually consist of a mix of

trapezoid and flat shaped grooves. The first trapezoid tooth makes the initial cut and removes the majority of the material, while the second, flat shaped tooth widens and cleans the cut for a better finish. A good TCG saw blade will usually have high quality Tungsten Carbide Tips which, with the help of a saw sharpening expert, can even be resharpened if there are signs of the tips becoming blunt — ensuring a consistently quality cut, longer product life and cost savings on replacements.

When using jigsaw blades on laminates, it’s vital to ensure that the blade is capable of providing an extra clean cut, due to the chipping nature of the material. To do this, the packaging should clearly state that the blade is suitable for cutting laminate materials, and merchants should ensure that their customers look for blades made from BIM (bi-metal) with a pointed design to the teeth.

To ensure user safety, it’s important that the bore of the machinery that will be used is checked, and what diameter of blade will fit. If a blade is too big or too small for the machine, it will interfere with safety guards and actually be dangerous to use.

Campaign trail Sika Everbuild’s dual-purpose sealant and adhesive, EB25 was launched to market two years ago — just as the brand celebrated its 25th anniversary. Today, the company is shining a spotlight on EB25 by undertaking the biggest advertising campaign in its history. Marketing Manager Jennie Lumley explains how merchants can capitalise on this investment by utilising the point of sale materials which form a key part of the campaign.

C

lassed as ‘essential retail’ by the government, the UK’s builders’ merchants largely remained open throughout the pandemic and national lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. For many, this also meant quickly getting to grips with ‘click and collect’ services and online retailing.

Although restrictions have now eased, a greater proportion of customers are still opting for the convenience of online shopping after becoming accustomed to it during the pandemic. This means that traditional builders’ merchants have to compete with virtual retailers in a more significant way than ever before.

And while there remains a demand for instore shopping, this can no longer be taken for granted meaning builders’ merchants have to work harder to attract customers through their doors. Keeping stores fresh, well-stocked and easy to navigate are all essential — and refreshing point of sale regularly can help on all three counts.

If used well, POS materials can alert your customers to products (and encourage purchases) in an organic way that algorithms and pop-up adverts can’t always achieve.

One of the most-cited reasons why customers opt to shop in person is down to 62 PBM SEPTEMBER 2021

the advice you’re able to give on the products you stock. While you don’t need to be experts on every single product, it’s worth keeping up to speed with suppliers for any notable product changes. And this also applies equally to their marketing plans.

If you align your in-store setup with manufacturers’ marketing you’ll be able to harness some of that market exposure too. For example, when you know that a manufacturer is running a particularly big campaign, like the current EB25 promotion from Sika Everbuild which includes the brand’s first foray into TV advertising alongside radio, social media and national print media adverts, you can piggyback on the back of this investment to generate sales in store.

Practical POS Placement No one knows your shop floor better than you do. You’ll know that when it comes to POS positioning is everything as is selecting the right type to fit the available space.

Consider whether you need to draw attention to the product where the range is located with shelf talkers or wobblers, or if you want to encourage impulse buys by positioning a reminder near the till in the form of a poster or vinyl counter mat, or

simply want to grab customers’ attention immediately as they enter the store.

As part of the EB25 campaign, Sika Everbuild has created a range of POS materials including counter top display screens and free-standing display units (FSDUs) in either cardboard or metal. The FSDUs highlight the all-important time and money saving benefits of EB25 including a series of icons which demonstrate all its many benefits, and are compact enough to fit wherever is most appropriate in each store — whether by the door, counter or elsewhere.

The new EB25 POS materials mirror the no-nonsense approach of the adverts which customers are likely to have seen or heard, providing a timely reminder once in store.

PRODUCTS & SERVICES TOYOTA MATERIAL HANDLING STAGE V FLT ENGINES Toyota Material Handling’s top selling Tonero range of counterbalanced forklift trucks is now offered with newlydeveloped Stage V compliant diesel and LPG engines which, combined with other engineering advances incorporated within the design of the range, are said to deliver a host of environmental benefits.

For example, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions have all been dramatically reduced. Indeed, Toyota says that emissions from both the diesel- and LPG-fuelled Tonero Stage V forklift ranges “are now so minimal that they are notably lower than the levels set out by the European Commission in its Stage V emissions standards for non-road mobile machinery (NRMM)”.

SUMMER SPECTACULAR Whilst delayed by a year due to the pandemic, the last few months will be remembered as a fantastic summer of sport. Prior to England’s penalty shootout heartbreak (I’m aware that plenty of our readers around the UK may not see it in quite the same way…), the Euros showcased some scintillating games — the ‘Wonderful Wednesday’ of June 23rd, for instance, brought 18 goals and lots of drama across the final group games featuring the likes of Spain, France, Portugal and Germany. A similar highlight were the Round of 16 games a few days later of Spain beating Croatia 5-3 and then France, who were cruising, being pegged back and ultimately defeated on penalties by Switzerland.

No sooner had the Euros finished, our attention transferred to Tokyo and the Olympics. The time difference and a change in broadcasting rights slightly limited what we could watch and when (under the circumstances, I think the BBC did an excellent job), but as always happens, I found myself mesmerised by sports I barely knew existed and loving every minute.

There are too many highlights to name, but the three Triathlon events (Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Relay) proved to be a gripping late night watchalong. Away from the more mainstream sports, the BMX (Freestyle and Racing) and Skateboarding events were amazing, whilst who knew Modern Pentathlon, Artistic — formerly Synchronised — Swimming, Climbing and Rhythmic Gymnastics could be so exciting?!

Seriously, if you want to see some incredible ball control and teamwork, forget the return of the Premier League and watch the Group All Round Rhythmic Gymnastics Final. Mind blowing stuff!

BACK FOR GOOD By the time you read this, the first two or three rounds of fixtures will have taken place so any predictions I make could already be looking pretty stupid! But that’s not going to hold me back…

If you’re looking for FPL bargains, I fancy Norwich’s on loan Chelsea starlet Billy Gilmour to be much more than a fantasy football makeweight on your bench. I’m also backing Brentford striker Ivan Toney to successfully make the step up.

Away from the usual suspects, I think Villa will be a great source of points all over the pitch with shrewd signings like Danny Ings and Emiliano Buendía looking to more than compensate for the loss of talisman Jack Grealish.

As for the League itself, and much as it pains me to say it, I think a very solid Chelsea will push Man City all the way this year and just pip Pep to the title!

The thing I’m most looking forward to though is seeing the return of capacity crowds. Football without the fans just wasn’t the same…
