limate change, and the broader issues of sustainability and net zero carbon emissions, have been steadily rising up the news agenda again for some time.

And in recent months, dramatic images of the wildfires in Greece and Turkey along with the devastating flooding in the north eastern states of America have somewhat crystalised the severity of the challenge.

Closer to home, the UK has experienced its own extended periods of extreme weather whilst the activities of groups such as Extinction Rebellion — which, depending on your point of view, are seen as either necessarily disruptive to successfully raise awareness or counter-productive in alienating potential allies to the cause — have become a regular feature of life in London and other cities.

In November, the UK plays host to the UN’s Climate Change Conference, commonly known as COP26. The international summit, taking place at the SCC in Glasgow, is intended to “bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement” and follows on from the publication of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report — the first since 2013 — which starkly detailed the impact of human activity on the Earth’s climate. Indeed, more than one national newspaper reported its findings as a ‘Code Red’ for humanity.

Whilst varying degrees of cynicism remain alarmingly common among the commentariat, attitudes do seem to have softened within the industry — perhaps in PROFESSIONAL

From many earlier interventions being dismissed as little more than ‘greenwashing’, the sector now appears to be enthusiastically rising to the challenge.

And whether this is down to the personal feelings of business leaders to drive change, the unyielding requirement to meet government targets or simply to benefit from the commercial gains of a market hungry for sustainable solutions is largely immaterial.

Indeed, it is a topic we return to several times later on in this issue and the industry is to be applauded for the great strides it is taking towards a more sustainable solutions — from the growing numbers of CO2nstructZero Business Champions appointed by the Construction Leadership Council, to the plethora of programmes and initiatives being implemented by businesses nationwide.

If the carrot lies in the rather attractive goal of delivering a brighter future for the world — through enhanced energy efficient, customer-conscious and progressive businesses — the second aspect of the equation has room

for improvement. So whilst the Government may have set out its vision to achieve net zero carbon by 2050, far greater detail on how this can be successfully delivered is required.

What’s more, lessons have to be learned from the failure of previous schemes and incentive programmes. For example, the National Audit Office has recently published its review of the doomed Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme — and the findings don’t exactly make for comfortable reading.

A litany of mistakes were detailed, but perhaps most troublingly was the crucial error of simply not engaging effectively with the industry tasked to deliver the programme: “(BEIS) did not sufficiently understand the challenges facing installers, failing to learn from its own previous energy schemes. Other energy schemes have shown the need for a robust evaluation of stakeholders’ views. The Department only consulted with installers after the scheme was announced, which limited the opportunities to include installer views in the scheme design.”

With an invigorated industry ready, willing and able to deliver, it is vital such mistakes are not repeated yet again.

NEWS UPDATE BMF STATES “HAULAGE IS OUR TOP PRIORITY”

Keep on moving Training ground Bostik has opened the Bostik Academy, a new state-of-the-art training facility located at the company’s UK headquarters in Stafford. The new facility features a sleek, modern lecture theatre for theoretical training, which can then be put into practice in a separate room that includes custom-built features such as flooring bays, plus the technology and equipment for various practical demonstrations.

Offering a mix of blended learning, interactive seminars and the ability to host live streaming webinars to ensure there is provision for a wide range of training to a variety of the company’s customer types, the Bostik Academy also features an additional online platform for attendees to consolidate their learning after the training sessions.

Darren Robinson, National Technical Manager, said: “We want people to strengthen their skills and leave us with improved confidence in their abilities. The right training is therefore a valuable investment for contractors and distributors, and will give them an important advantage in an increasingly competitive market.”

New data from the Builders Merchants Federation reveals the shortage of HGV drivers as the main challenge faced by its members, who are “already performing a balancing act to keep the building materials supply chain running across the UK”.

A snap survey of BMF members found 67% of builders’ merchant respondents and 86% of supplier respondents are affected by haulage issues, citing it as their number one concern.

John Newcomb, BMF CEO, said: “Haulage, and in particular the shortage of HGV drivers, has become our industry’s number one concern, and the results of our member survey have been fed into discussions between the transport industry and government.

“Some suppliers are reporting that the standard five-day lead time has more than doubled. In some cases, we are even seeing increases of up to four weeks. We have heard reports that suppliers are asking merchants to collect orders as they cannot get enough drivers to complete deliveries.

“Driver recruitment is the main challenge.

Both suppliers and merchants are prepared to recruit or retrain existing staff as drivers, but there are limited opportunities for training and testing. They want more testing to be made available to help get new HGV drivers on the road.”

As has been reported at length, the issue is not confined to the building materials industry.

The Covid-19 pandemic, Brexit and tax changes have contributed to haulage challenges, with transport industry bodies estimating a shortfall of around 100,000 HGV drivers, with

an estimated 15,000 lost following the UK’s exit from the EU. Logistics UK’s May 2021 tracker survey found 61% of respondents considered recruitment of HGV drivers to be a ‘severe’ or ‘very severe’ challenge, while 50% cited the availability of testing as a ‘moderate’ or ‘extreme’ barrier to recovery.

John added: “Builders merchants have done a fantastic job managing product demand and supply in the face of high global demand and reduced capacity resulting from the pandemic.

Haulage is the latest challenge and our top priority. We are doing everything we can to assist discussions between the freight industry and government as they seek to agree both short and long term solutions.”

Bag it up Mannok has invested a further €2.1 million in its cement bagging facilities, doubling the output capacity of the company’s weatherproof bagged cement product range.

The recent outlay is one of a number of key investments for Mannok this year, which align with the company’s growth plans on both sides of the Irish Sea. The latest move sees the company’s overall investment in its cement bagging facilities over the last three years reach over €5m, following an initial multi-million euro investment in 2018 when the installation of Mannok’s first weatherproof bagging line enabled the successful launch of its extended

bagged cement range.

Despite the twin challenges of Brexit and Covid, the demand for Mannok’s popular bagged cement products remains high on both sides of the Irish Sea. CEO Liam McCaffrey commented: “We’ve seen customers moving to the weatherproof bags

because they’re a cleaner solution which helps reduce product waste and ensure healthier, dust-free surroundings. The packaging also offers greater flexibility, allowing outdoor storage without concern about weather conditions thanks to the tear-resistant and easy handling waterproof bags.”

BMBI OUTLINES RECORD QUARTER FOR BUILDING MATERIALS SALES

Record performance The latest report from the BMF’s Builders Merchants Building Index (BMBI) confirms Q2 2021 as the “best performing quarter on record” with total builders’ merchants sales increasing by an “astonishing” +96.0% over Q2 2020.

While this reflects the severe adverse impact of the initial Covid lockdown, looking further back the BMBI figures show Q2 2021 merchant sales increasing by +20.3% against Q2 2019. All categories sold more in Q2 2021 compared with the same period in both of last two years.

Confirming the strength of the market, 2021 quarter on quarter sales also showed significant growth. Sales in Q2 2021 were 24.1% higher than in Q1, with two less trading days in Q2. Average sales a day in Q2 were 28.1% higher than in Q1.

Two of the strongest performers in Q2 2021 were the weakest in Q2 2020 — tools increased by +151.4% and Kitchens & Bathrooms by +141.3%. In addition, four categories had their best-ever quarterly sales since the BMBI started in July 2014 — Timber & Joinery Products (+134.6%), Ironmongery (+105.9%), Heavy Building Materials (+81.4%) and Landscaping (+71.1%).

Comparing Q2 2021 with the same quarter two years ago, it is clear that the two strongest performers — Landscaping (+48.3%) and

Timber & Joinery Products (+41.3%) — drove the overall increase. Sales increases were recorded in all categories, with the largest product category, Heavy Building Materials, up by +11.8%.

Emile van der Ryst, Senior Client Insight Manager – Trade at GfK, said: “The well-documented surge in house building and buying has played a key role, while the stock shortages experienced across the UK hasn’t slowed down market performance. The second half of the year is difficult to predict but will be fascinating to track.”

MKM became a Lakes Partner in 2020, signing up to the scheme that supports merchants and retail establishments with additional support and an online embedded showroom if requested.

This is accessed through each stockist’s own website — as MKM has done — and visitors can download co-branded brochures and ask questions directly to the stockist’s staff via chat and email.

h&b Supports IoBM Intending to “underpin a professional training ethos within the building materials industry”, the Institute of Builders Merchants’ (IoBM) is targeting 1,000 new members over the next 12 months with a longer term ambition to become a Chartered Institute. And the latest organisation to add its backing to the IoBM’s plans since its merger with the BMF earlier this year is the h&b Buying Group.

The common Code

Designed to help facilitate safer buildings whilst also improving the flow and accuracy of product data, the Construction Products Association (CPA) has recently released the results of its industry-wide consultation on the new Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI).

T

he 65 page report — downloadable at www.buildingsafely.co.uk — details feedback from 35 trade associations representing the views of many thousands of member firms across the supply chain, and 180 individual provider and user organisations of construction product information, including most of the largest companies in the industry.

The new Code was developed to prevent some of the issues raised in Dame Judith Hackitt’s report ‘Building A Safer Future’, following the Grenfell Tower fire, with the CPA tasked to tackle a number of the industry’s identified shortcomings relating to product information.

Taking place between February and May, the consultation was undertaken for the CPA by MRA Research and invited trade associations, manufacturers, distributors, specifiers and users of product information to comment on the proposed new CCPI and its eleven Clauses.

The findings confirm that the industry welcomes and supports the Code, and considers it a crucial step in the right direction. Comments confirmed that more clarity was needed in some areas, particularly around the training and competence requirements, and on what exactly was required to comply with the

The CPA’s Marketing Integrity Group (MIG) spent a further two months analysing and working through the Code so it reflects the massive amount of expert feedback from the consultation. Peter Caplehorn, Chief Executive of the CPA, said: “We are extremely pleased with the progress that has been made with the CCPI and the enormous efforts of the MIG in driving it through. I truly believe the Code will achieve meaningful and permanent change in our industry, providing users of construction

products with accurate information they can trust.

“The CPA is incredibly focussed on improving building safety and driving cultural change in our industry. We are involved in a wide range of initiatives to ensure tragedies like Grenfell never happen again, and the CCPI is just one of those.

“An essential counterpart to the Code is the activity of the Working Group 12 (WG12) — a sub-group of the IRG’s Competence Steering Group (CSG), led by the CPA. WG12 focuses specifically on the competency of those interacting with products and accessing construction product information. The CSG recognises that good product information on its own is not enough; those that use it must be competent to do so, to understand what they are reading and to be able to apply the performance information appropriately.”

The Code has now been finalised and is in the process of being handed to Construction Product Information Ltd (CPI Ltd) — a not-for-profit organisation with independent governance and management being set-up to administer the CCPI when it is launched later this year.

Prize-winning performers There was a focus on youth at the BMF Awards Dinner, part of its annual Members’ Day event, with prizes awarded to the best Apprentices, the best performing Diploma student, the best performing Online student — as well as Young Merchant and Young Supplier Achievers.

This year’s winners succeeded despite the added disruption of the Covid pandemic. Many congratulations to all!

Young Achiever Awards (sponsored by Hafele, Bostik, Mannok and GfK) These are open to anyone under 35 who has demonstrated an ability to go above and beyond in their business, for example introducing new ideas and concepts or identifying fresh opportunities that enhance the business.

The outstanding quality of this year’s entries gave the judges a particularly hard job, but they all agreed on the two winners.

Young Merchant Achiever — Lindsey Hart of Norman Piette Group Following a degree in marketing and management, Lindsey (29) successfully progressed her marketing career at Guernsey-based Norman Piette Group.

However, she was nominated by CEO John Bampkin following her successful application to add sales management to her marketing responsibility.

John said he had “not seen a better job application in 39 years in the industry” and Lindsey has excelled in the new role, transforming team performance in just nine months.

The detailed award entry, including numerous customer testimonials, summed up Lindsey’s performance thus: “Leading from the

front and putting the people first in her infectious enthusiastic way has created a real team dynamic which is bringing huge success.”

This is all the more impressive in her first sales role.

Young Supplier Achiever — Alex Barton of E. Tupling Alex (24) frequently goes over and above her job role as Office and Accounts Administrator, immersing herself into projects to help colleagues and drive the business forward, striving for excellence in everything she does.

Such projects included one to enhance corporate sustainability, where she took it upon herself to analyse business processes and suggest ways they could be more sustainable. As a result, the company implemented 10 changes improving operational efficiency.

Another project, undertaken in her free time, drew upon her art degree to create a welcoming wall of art at the company’s new distribution centre. The wall, which features E. Tupling’s brand colours, has been a striking addition, increasing employees’ positivity during an extremely tough year for everyone.

by Cortexa). Sam was incredibly consistent in undertaking the BMF Building Blocks online modules, completing a full house of six blocks with an average score of 87.2%.

Supply difficulties moderate expectations and confiedence The latest instalment of ‘The Pulse’ highlights a number of concerns on the path to post-lockdown recovery.

erchants’ sales expectations weakened in August compared to July as frustrated firms battled with long lead times, material and staff shortages, and price increases.

Confidence in the market was impacted. Some merchants are affected badly, others much less so.

The Pulse, by MRA Research, is a monthly tracking survey of merchants’ confidence and prospects. Telephone interviewing took place between 2nd and 5th August 2021.

Year on year, merchants’ very high expectations eased but remained strongly positive (net +29%) — also Chart 2. Large outlets (+55%) and merchants in Scotland (+38%) were most positive.

Nearly one in three merchants expecting August sales to improve year-on-year expected growth of up to 9%. More than six in ten expected sales to grow 10% or more.

Materials supply Merchants were asked on a scale of 1 (not at all) to 7 (very badly) to what extent their business and customers have been affected by supply problems. The average score increased to 4.41 in August, with over half the merchants polled suffering supply problems — Chart 1.

Quarter-on-quarter, sales expectations dropped sharply in August with a net +3% forecasting growth in the period August to October compared to the previous three months. While National merchants (+8%) and Regionals (+3%) predict better sales, independents expect a decline (-5%).

Sales expectations Compared to July, merchants’ sales expectations in August fell, with a net -9% forecasting lower sales month-on-month — Chart 2. The North was the only region expecting growth over the period (+18%).

Of the merchants expecting lower sales in August compared to July, 26% expected a decline of under 5% but 44% expected sales to fall by more than 10%.

Just over half (54%) of those expecting sales to increase quarter-on-quarter expect sales to grow by up to 9%. Forty-four per cent expect growth of 10-20%.

Merchants’ sales expectations for the next six months (August 2021-January 2022) compared to the previous six months dropped in August. A net decrease of -17% is expected for the first time since April 2020 — Chart 3. Merchants in all regions expect sales to decline over the period.

slightly in August compared to July, but is still high at a net +26%.

Nationals (+38%) were more confident than Independents (+14%).

Merchants in Scotland (+38%) were most confident regionally.

Year-on-year, merchants’ confidence in their own business eased in August compared to the same month last year, but remains extremely strong (net +53%) — also Chart 5.

Almost half the merchants who expect sales to drop in the next six months compared to the previous six months are expecting sales to fall by up to 9%. A further 44% expect sales to drop 10-20% — Chart 4.

Confidence in the market Compared to July’s survey, confidence in the market fell sharply in August with a net -21% of merchants less confident than the previous month. Independents and those in the Midlands lost confidence the most (-29%).

Year-on-year, confidence in the market fell to a net +8% in August, from +33% in the previous month’s survey, but is still positive — Chart 5. Merchants in Scotland were most confident (+38%).

About the Pulse The Pulse is a monthly trends survey tracking builders’ merchants’ confidence and prospects over time. Produced by MRA Research, the insight division of MRA Marketing, it captures merchants’ views of future prospects in terms of sales expectations, confidence in their business, confidence in the market, and the key issues and problems they experience.

Jewson Civils Frazer Scottish Water contract

Grafton Group plc Half Year Report

Jewson Civils Frazer has been appointed by Scottish Water as its single supplier for the provision of materials distribution for its entire network, encompassing the supply and distribution of civils and utilities products to 41 Scottish Water satellite stores including island locations. The four-year Framework Agreement, with the scope to extend for a further four years, also includes the supply of materials to all Scottish Water Alliance partners for SR21 Capital works programme and also the DV2 Alliance partners delivering refurbishment, repair and replacement projects across the Scottish Water Network.

Nick Boyle, Sales Director at the specialist merchant, said: “This is an enormous win for the Jewson Civils Frazer team and we are absolutely delighted to be working in partnership with Scottish Water to support its Capital Investment and Capital Works Programme. Independent Builders Merchants Group Leadership transition The IBMG has announced that Chief Executive Andrew Cope is handing the leadership of the organisation to Allun Pittingale (pictured), who is appointed Group Managing Director as part of a planned succession.

Andrew took over as CEO of IBMG in late 2019 following the acquisition of Chandlers Building Supplies, bringing his focused leadership to the task of integration of the Parkers, Chandlers, Fairalls and Stamco Timber businesses to create “the leading independent builders’ merchants group in the South East of England”. He will remain as Business Development Director of the Group, specifically in charge of further acquisitions and greenfield sites.

Allun joined IBMG in May 2020 from Travis Perkins, where he was Regional Managing Director for the South East, following a career in independent merchanting.

A statement from the Group said: “Allun has had a significant impact in his role as MD of IBMG’s Builders Merchants Division working hand in hand with Andrew over this period. With the integration largely complete and IBMG the high-performing business it is today, Andrew has decided now is the right time to hand over the day-to-day leadership of the Group.”

In other moves within the Group, Danny Spokes has been promoted to MD of Chandlers Roofing Supplies and Trevor Mudd to MD of Stamco Timber, reflecting their respective roles in building both divisions.

Relating to the period in which it announced its decision to divest its Traditional Merchanting Business in Great Britain for an enterprise value of £520 million, Grafton Group plc has announced its half year results for the period ended 30 June 2021.

Recording a “record half year adjusted operating profit” of £142.4 million (before property profit) alongside a “record Group adjusted operating profit margin” of 13.9% (also before property profit), Chief Executive Officer Gavin Slark said: “This was a half year of high performance, operational excellence and significant strategic development.”

Referencing its “strategic growth focus… to invest in higher returning businesses with good market positions that have a differentiated customer offering”, the report also highlighted how the Group has “continued to invest in (its) digital channels to increase traffic to our websites and online engagement and transactions with our customers”.

On the Group’s strategy to divest its Traditional Merchanting Business, Gavin commented: “Divestment provides an opportunity to deploy our capital resources towards more differentiated, higher growth potential businesses offering superior returns and greater resilience through the cycle.”

Selco Builders Warehouse now accounts for almost three quarters of its UK distribution activities — with the remainder comprised of MacBlair in Northern Ireland plus the TG Lynes and Leyland SDM specialist distributors, which trade in and around London — and Gavin added: “The operating profit margin in the continuing UK distribution business was 13.3% in the half year which marks a significant uplift on the margin of 6.4% returned for the first half of 2019, including the businesses that we have agreed to divest.”

Lords Builders Merchants Nu-Line site acquisition Lords opened its twelfth branch in September following the acquisition of the business and assets of Nu-Line Builders Merchants (established in 1965) in the Ladbroke Grove area of West London. Lords will be assigned the Malton Road, NW10 site leases and will take on circa 25 of Nu-Line’s employees, including experienced Branch Manager Kevin Beecher. The new owners will also be relocating a number of product categories from Nu-Line’s second branch in Westbourne Park Road, which is ceasing to trade ahead of being sold for redevelopment by the vendor.

Shanker Patel, Lords’ CEO, said: “We are delighted to announce our first acquisition since our successful IPO in July. We welcome our 25 new colleagues to the Group and look forward to integrating them into our strong, familial culture.”

West Building Supplies Beverley branch Already operating from two sites in Bridlington and one in Scarborough, family-owned West Building Supplies is celebrating its 50th anniversary and has marked the occasion with the opening of a fourth branch in the market town of Beverley.

The h&b member’s Sean Boyd said: “We have been looking for an opportunity to expand into Beverley for some time now — its population profile and location represents a perfect progression for us. We found a great location and the right team so we grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

“With the current situation with supply issues, we have called on our h&b suppliers to help us stock the new branch. Having that relationship with them has been invaluable and all of them have really pulled out all the stops to help us.”

Kicking the can...?

A number of industry bodies have responded to the delay in introducing the new ‘United Kingdom Conformity Assessed’ (UKCA) product marking changes.

A

s a consequence of the UK’s departure from the European Union, changes were due to come into force on 1 January 2022 that would require products that previously had CE markings to change to the new UKCA mark.

However, many in the building materials and wider construction industry had raised concerns regarding the timing and feasibility of this change.

In response, the Government has now announced that CE marked products will be allowed to be sold in the UK for a further 12 months.

The Builders Merchants Federation has given a guarded welcome to the announcement, with CEO John Newcomb commenting: “The Government’s decision to postpone planned changes to product marking rules for 12 months is good news and gives welcome breathing space. It allows more time to rectify complex technical issues so that British and European manufacturers can work towards gaining UKCA Marking — but further action is needed.

“There are currently not enough

approved companies or qualified people to conduct the huge number of assessments and certifications required, and the extension does nothing to nurture what limited testing capacity and capability there is within Great Britain.”

John added a note of further caution, warning: “There is a danger that simply extending the time period for CE marked goods to be placed on the GB market is just kicking the can down the road, and not providing a long term solution.”

Writing recently in its weekly newsletter, Timber Trade Federation CEO David Hopkins commented: “We have known for some time now that such an extension was inevitable due to delays to the Building Safety Bill, an essential part of the new product safety regime which the UKCA mark will work in tandem with — an issue we wrote about in July. So while this extension is welcome, many businesses will share our frustration about the approach taken by Government on this issue.

“The main reason the Government gave for the extension was the impact of the

pandemic on businesses. Of course this is true, but, it was true months ago. It is difficult to see the justification for the delay in communicating this extension to businesses.”

David continued: “While the additional time will be helpful in making this transition, it remains important you take steps now to get your businesses and supply chain on this journey. Earlier this year we published a guide to making the change to the UKCA mark, and our advice remains unchanged. I hope you do find the guidance useful.”

The Construction Products Association had campaigned for the introduction of the UKCA mark to be postponed for two years to January 2024. Jeff May, CPA Government Relations and Business Development Director, said: “To the Government’s credit they realised some of the challenges were difficult to meet and couldn’t have happened at a worse time given shortages in imported supplies and tougher building safety regulation. We are cautiously optimistic that we can meet the new deadline although there will be a lot of challenges to do this.”

Sustainable supply Alongside its fellow Saint-Gobain Group brands, Artex is implementing a number of initiatives designed to lessen its environmental footprint.

PBM takes a look at the distributor’s focus on sustainability, and how it aims to demonstrate the importance of lowering carbon emissions throughout the construction sector supply chain.

A

s a well-known distributor of familiar construction product brands including Gyproc, Weber and Thistle Plasters, there’s a lot more to the Artex name nowadays than textured finishes.

With a diverse portfolio and a long-standing heritage, the company says it can tailor its offering to match the needs of its merchant customers throughout the country.

Its support package includes an array of point of sale and marketing materials, whilst a flexible delivery service means that customers

can order from as little as a single pallet — whether a full pallet of a single product, or a mixed pallet from across the range — and its Gyproc Express parcel service is said to ensure that smaller consignments can be rapidly despatched as required.

Beyond its product offer and capacity to deliver stock into merchant branches, the company is also placing an increased emphasis on addressing its environmental impact. Indeed, with the issue of sustainability rising up the agenda and the need for the

construction sector — which is said to account for 40% of energy consumption in industrialised countries — to play its part, it is a responsibility the Saint-Gobain Group as a whole takes seriously as it seeks to address “the challenges of sustainable construction, resource efficiency and the fight against climate change”.

The Group reports that it is in the process of finalising its zero-carbon roadmap which will set out a path for each of its businesses to meet medium-term Science Based Targets for 2030, with the ultimate goal of net zero carbon by 2050. This philosophy, which it summarises as a commitment to “make the world a better home”, encompasses all aspects of its activities, from developing new product solutions to implementing greater environmental efficiencies across its business and brands — from the buildings and operations, to its packaging and logistics.

For Artex in particular, the business has embarked on a number of recent initiatives — both larger and smaller scale — as it searches for ways to become a more sustainable organisation. For example, it was one of three Saint-Gobain Group companies to receive a share of £650,000 as part of the

Group’s INVEST Carbon fund to support the decarbonisation of its businesses on their net zero journey.

Through the funding, the Wishaw branch of Jewson installed high performing insulation, LED lighting, solar photovoltaics and an air source heat pump whilst four branches of Jewson Civils Frazer are to replace their electric heating systems with air source heat pumps with the aim of saving 56 tonnes of CO2 a year.

However the biggest tranche, and one which is set to deliver the most significant result, was the £300,000 secured by Artex to fund the installation of a biomass heating system at its base in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire. Completely replacing and decarbonising the site’s existing heating system, it is estimated the project will reduce CO2 emissions by 150 tonnes a year — the equivalent to nearly 600,000 miles in a diesel car.

In July, Artex also took delivery of a new Mercedes lorry which runs on ‘hydrotreated vegetable oil’ (HVO). The fuel is

manufactured from sustainable, renewable feed-stocks and the distributor is now trialling the vehicle with the expectation of seeing a “90% reduction in CO2 when compared with its diesel equivalents”. A 10,000 litre HVO tank has been installed in Ruddington and the trial will encompass the journeys where routes start and end at Artex, with the performances reviewed weekly to monitor the ‘real time effect’.

The business had already been using biofilm as pallet wrap, saving 12.5 tonnes of CO2 in 2020, and a plastic-use reduction of

3.9 tonnes. For its Gyproc Express parcel service, it uses eco-friendly boxes and has a tree planting programme for the boxes used — offsetting a further 49 tonnes of CO2 — whilst a review of its wider product packaging is ongoing.

With its Environmental Management System certified to ISO14001:2015, numerous other initiatives — from waste minimisation, cardboard and pallet recycling to the upcycling of old lockers into planters — are also in place on site, with many ideas put into practice following engagement with the firm’s employees.

As the importance of sustainable solutions gains further recognition within the sector, Artex states it is “making good progress” on its own journey to achieving greater carbon efficiency, acting as a responsible partner to help reduce the environmental impact throughout the wider supply chain.

Net benefits Climate change awareness and broader sustainability issues have once again risen up the agenda in recent weeks and months. With the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference set to take place in Glasgow this October, and following on from its startling Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, released in August, which declared a “Code Red for human-driven global heating”, the summer has been dominated by the issue — from a new wave of Extinction Rebellion protests to shocking stories of

wildfires in Greece and Turkey, and record rainfall in the North Eastern states of America.

With the construction industry and buildings responsible for a significant amount of the nation’s emissions, the Government has set stringent targets for ‘the road to net zero’ and many manufacturers are making strident plans to improve their sustainability standing. Whilst upfront investment is required, greater efficiencies and improved processes can also be a positive result — over and above the reduction of any environmental impact.

PBM takes a look at some of the latest news from a number of industry companies and organisations.

West Fraser Net carbon negative products West Fraser has declared that its panel products are net carbon negative, meaning that its activities “go beyond achieving net zero carbon emissions to actually create an environmental benefit by locking up carbon within the panel product range, thus not releasing it into the atmosphere”.

The firm’s four European sites and three product ranges are said to sequester a total of 1.1 million tonnes of carbon annually, and it is celebrating this net carbon negative status with a dedicated web page where visitors can download a factsheet, check out frequently asked questions and find a host of facts and figures to help understand what the manufacturer — formerly known as Norbord — has done to achieve carbon negativity.

BMF Young Merchant Conference Zero-carbon entrepreneur Angus Macdonald, the founder and CEO of award-winning property development company Galion, will address delegates at the BMF Young Merchant Conference in October.

Angus, who began his career as a Royal Navy helicopter pilot, switched his high-flying ambitions to sustainable housing in 2002 following an MSc in Property Development and Project Management. He has successfully masterminded developments in Bristol and Plymouth, including a 28 acre MOD site where he developed 500 waterside homes, with Galion said to be focused on “sustainable construction to provide luxury newbuild and bespoke homes that have minimal impact on the environment and the communities around them”.

Medite Smartply COP26 Zero Carbon House Medite Smartply reports that it will play a “crucial role” in the construction of the COP26 House, a zero carbon, timber frame building built

by Beyond Zero Homes that will showcase low carbon, circular solutions in building and living during the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow.

Chris King, the manufacturer’s MD, said: “We are delighted to be part of this project that will help demonstrate the boundless opportunities for sustainable timber based solutions in construction. The products and systems for fighting the climate emergency are already available — we in the construction industry have not only the opportunity but the responsibility to put theories into action and show the world how we can build and live sustainably, using timber and ecologically responsible solutions.”

The members of Beyond Zero Homes are united by a common goal that goes beyond zero carbon — to demonstrate how beautiful, affordable, healthy homes can be developed with minimal impact on the environment, throughout their lifecycle. The one-bedroom house will be built on a 10m x 5m footprint. It has been specifically designed to use homegrown C16 Spruce to avoid the need for imported timber, and the construction is based on a 1.2m grid to be easily panelised and prefabricated.

Energy and Utilities Alliance (EUA) UK Hydrogen Strategy Comment Commenting on the Government’s announcement in August of the nation’s Hydrogen Strategy, EUA CEO Mike Foster said: “The UK’s Hydrogen Strategy represents a huge step in the right direction for the introduction of the technology — something the heating industry is rallying behind in the decarbonisation process. The Government’s commitment to hydrogen is a promising step, which will help to create thousands of jobs and decarbonise homes for millions of consumers with minimal disruption.

“We are enthused to see the Government also recognise the role a hydrogen blend into the grid will play in reducing carbon emissions without homeowners needing to change appliances or boilers. It is of great importance that the transition to hydrogen does not cause disruption or large costs to consumers.

The blend is a way to significantly reduce emissions with no change, which will in turn leave time for the groundwork to be laid for a seamless switch to 100% hydrogen later on.”

He continued: “A number of EUA members have been at the forefront of developing hydrogen heating technologies to ease the transition for homeowners and ensure cost to them is no more than with natural gas equivalents. With the establishment of this strategy, UK consumers and businesses have more choice across low-carbon energy mix, an integral part of ensuring no one is left being in the renewable transition.”

Cemex Merchant pallet recovery service As part of its ‘Future in Action – Committed to Net Zero CO2’ Climate Action Strategy, Cemex is extending its commitment to waste reduction and the circular economy with merchants by relaunching its nationwide pallet recovery service.

Under the initiative, all re-usable wooden pallets are collected free of charge by ELM, Cemex’s designated pallet collector which refurbishes and returns them to Cemex UK Cement for re-use. Any pallets damaged beyond repair are recycled. Nationwide collections are available within 10 working days on average from request, with capacity for up to 250 pallets (550 pallets for an articulated vehicle) per load, but can be as few as 50 pallets.

Graeme Barton, the supplier’s National Sales Manager - Packed Cement, said: “We want to make life easier for our merchants to work with us to reduce waste. We’d like to make pallet recovery part of the standard delivery process, as many pallets still end up in landfill. Rising timber costs, combined with pallet shortages, means there is a heightened need to conserve and maintain pallets throughout the supply chain. Recovery is considerably more cost effective than buying new replacements.”

He continued: “Pallets are a standard format in transporting building products and contribute a significant financial and environmental cost which needs to be captured by the user. We saw a similar situation with supermarkets and plastic bags, but we’d rather not wait for legislation to enforce this, we’d really like to make a difference now with preventative action.

“The pallet recovery service is regenerative by design and aims to support the key principals of the circular economy to benefit business, society and the environment. If we all pull together it will have a significant impact across the whole supply chain.”

National Buying Group (NBG) has welcomed Phil Bonar to the role of New Partner Development and Recruitment.

Having worked at senior sales positions for companies including Gower Furniture, Rixonway Kitchens, Aliaxis and Polypipe, Phil brings a wealth of knowledge about the industry and a vast number of connections to his new role.

In the new post, Phil will take care of identifying, recruiting and supporting new Partners in playing an active part in the success of NBG. He said: “The builders’ merchant market is constantly evolving, and this is a crucial time for NBG to grow and continue to support Partners through challenges including post-pandemic recovery, Brexit and supply chain issues.”

Knauf UK and Ireland is pleased to announce the appointment of Ian Stokes as Managing Director. This is a return for Ian who has spent the last five years managing the Knauf Northern European region and is looking to capitalise on this wider international experience to drive the UK business through a period of huge opportunity.

Ian has worked for Knauf since 1995, joining the marketing team initially and progressing through commercial roles before being appointed Managing Director in 2010.

Raise the roof It’s no secret that the UK is experiencing a ‘pandemic property boom’. According to the BBC, the housing market is up 10.5% from last year and Britons are spending billions on home improvements. Matthew King, Sales Director at Keylite Roof Windows, discusses how builders’ merchants can stay ahead of the game in the wake of high demand and the challenge of a global materials shortage.

S

tay at home restrictions saw buying and living habits change almost overnight. Since then, pent up spending power and more free time for many — especially during the first national lockdown — has been directed into RMI. As people found themselves confined to their homes for much of the last 18 months, consumers spent £110.3b on home improvements — an increase of nearly 30% year-on-year, witnessing 5 million Brits redecorate their homes, 1.5 million installing

outhouses, and over a million building home-gyms and extensions (figures from Yahoo Finance).

But it wasn’t just a spending stimulus that affected this surge. The pandemic has seen every one of us use our spaces in different ways — the popularity of home offices and the prioritisation of outdoor spaces are two great examples. As people adapt their homes to this new way of living, the proportion of home-workers using home offices is set to grow even further from 34% to 43%

(thisismoney.co.uk), while Rightmove states that 2020 saw a staggering 126% per cent increase in enquiries from city residents looking to move to the countryside.

These figures may come as no surprise to many within the construction sector, as manufacturers and suppliers of building materials have witnessed an influx of sales so far this year, with no sign of slowing down.

As a result, these trends have triggered a spike in sales for building materials and in turn, demand for merchants to supply these products. The European smart home market continues to go from strength-to-strength, with smart security solutions representing one of the biggest areas of growth throughout 2021. PBM spoke with Chris Burrows, Head of Sales — Distribution and Smart Security for ERA, to discuss how merchants can capitalise on the increasing popularity of app-controlled security systems.

Q

Advances in connected home technology are continuing at a rapid pace. How can merchants stay ahead of the curve?

Smart devices have become increasingly commonplace in UK households, as individuals use a wide variety of connected products to automate aspects of their daily routines and manage specific areas of their properties. From smart speakers like Amazon Echo and Google Home to smart security, heating and lighting, consumers are embracing the convenience of virtual assistants and app-controlled devices.

To put this growing trend into perspective, Government-published research from December 2020 identified that over

However, the rate at which connected technology is developing and being used is much faster than the regulations and standards needed to protect end-users. For many individuals, data security and user privacy can be a consideration when purchasing app-controlled products, such as video doorbells and cameras, where personal details and recordings are stored by the

manufacturer.

Whilst regulations regarding the cybersecurity of Internet of Things (IoT) products are expected to be implemented later this year, merchants can take a proactive approach now and provide customers with the confidence that both their data and their property will be protected to the highest standards.

This can be accomplished by stocking smart security solutions that have been independently certified as cybersecure.

What types of certification should merchants be aware of with regard to smart security products?

In 2018, the UK Government reviewed the basic cybersecurity provisions of over 330 internet connected device manufacturers supplying the UK market.

Over 90% did not possess a comprehensive vulnerability disclosure programme and did not build the necessary security requirements, such as using unique credentials, into their products.

To overcome this and set an industry benchmark for the performance of smart security products, ERA has worked in close collaboration with the British Standards Institution (BSI) to develop the BSI

Launched in 2018, the Kitemark provides independent verification of the cybersecurity of camera and alarm systems and goes above and beyond the requirements of pending government legislation. It establishes a standard for best practice and removes the burden from merchants and professional installers to ensure the systems they supply; purchase and install are cybersecure. Instead, manufacturers must prove this by putting their smart security systems through rigorous data security testing.

By stocking Kitemarked security systems, merchants can provide customers with the confidence that the products they purchase offer the very highest standards in protection, not only for their property, but for their personal data.

ERA’s smart security ecosystem, ERA Protect, was the first smart security system to carry the BSI Kitemark certification for IoT connected devices, having achieved the Kitemark in 2019 due to its bank-level data encryption and UK owned data server.

What are the benefits of modular security systems?

From tech-savvy individuals looking to incorporate additional technologies into their homes, to customers taking their first step towards a connected home, the smart home market encompasses a diverse

audience.

Whilst stocking multiple product lines from different manufacturers to cater for these varying requirements is an option, merchants can also benefit from offering modular smart security systems. They allow customers to buy into a smart ecosystem, either on a one-off basis with a standalone product that fulfils a specific role, or the initial purchase can act as a steppingstone to real cross-selling opportunities.

For example, the ERA Protect ecosystem includes an alarm hub, which can be paired with up to 96 PIR sensors, sirens, keypads and other accessories, in addition to a smart video doorbell, indoor Wi-Fi camera and two outdoor cameras.

The devices can be purchased individually and operate autonomously to fulfil a specific function. However, they can also be wirelessly interlinked to form a modular ecosystem that can be continuously updated and extended to support homeowners in protecting every area of their property.

Cycle path PBM speaks with Sue Corrick, Product Marketing Manager at Allegion UK, for an insight into sustainable ironmongery and why the notion of a ‘product life cycle’ matters.

T

here has always been a certain ebb and flow towards sustainability and while it’s often recognised as critical, differing points of view and priorities have made it difficult to form a common push towards improvements. However, in recent times, the quest for environmental sustainability has become more widespread.

With the expectations on corporate responsibility also growing, it’s clear that meeting environmental obligations — whether as an individual customer or organisation — is only growing in importance.

Building environments account to around 40% of the UK’s carbon footprint whilst the construction industry also

produces a staggering amount of waste.

According to the 2018 edition of UK statistics on Waste, in 2014, the UK generated a total of 202.8 million tonnes of waste, with Construction, Demolition and Excavation responsible for 59% of that, totalling 119.6 million tonnes.

Furthermore, the construction industry also accounts for 55% of material consumption in the UK. And with

architectural ironmongery constructed of iron, steel, aluminium and timber, this subset of the sector is also contributing to the statistics.

As cited in the ‘GAI Specifiers Guide towards Ironmongery and the Impact of the Environment’, decision makers can look to ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ in a bid to improve their sustainability efforts. Much of this is being done by eliminating product and packaging waste, repurposing excess or discarded materials and creating innovative products and solutions that are better placed to meet environmental regulations.

Lasting life cycles To improve things further, suggests Sue Corrick, Product Marketing Manager at Allegion UK, there must also be greater focus

on extending the product life cycle itself. She said: “By extending the life cycle of ironmongery and minimising the need for repeat manufacturing, shipments and packaging, manufacturers can further reduce carbon footprint and protect our future environments. The life cycle of a construction product may also go through maintenance, refurbishment and demolition stages — of which, longevity and recycling elements must be considered to ensure the hardware outlasts the building structure itself.”

Sue continued: “On product packaging, with the impending Plastic Packaging Tax and practices such as the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) coming into effect in 2022 and 2023 respectively, the onus is on manufacturers to implement plans that make use of renewable resources and 100% recyclable materials. We’ve been making those steps at Allegion UK, right down to label classifications but with various stages of the product life cycle to consider, our collective efforts can’t end there.

“With construction at the heart of waste in the UK, there has been an increased demand for information on the environmental impact that construction products have, and with that we’ve seen a rise in initiatives that help manufacturers provide that necessary product transparency.

“ISO 14001, for example, is the most recognised international standard for environmental management systems and is designed to improve resource management and overall environmental performance through the product life cycle. By following this standard, manufacturers can better their environmental standing and take the first step in providing visible and detailed evidence for consumers that now seek this as part of their purchasing decision.

“Further programmes include the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), a complete mapping of a product’s environmental footprint and a standardised way to communicate the environmental impact of a product covering everything from material acquisition to waste generation.

■ As a mark of its commitment to supporting sustainability in construction, full EPD documentation is available for download from the Allegion UK website on Briton products in their respective categories, whilst the company is also “proactively aiming for 100% sustainable packaging for our products” ahead of the Plastic Tax and Extended Producer Responsibility coming into effect in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

For example, before January 2022, customers will find all plastic shrink wrap and plastic screw bags within Allegion’s Briton product boxes will boast upwards of 30% or more recyclable content and 100% biodegradable polystyrene.

Cardboard recycling is also being considered, with new 100% recyclable outer packaging designs in development.

Sue explained: “For an EPD to be awarded, a Life Cycle Assessment must also be undertaken on a product and this must meet Product Category Rules, and therefore be declared as acceptable in building rating schemes such as BREEAM. We’re honoured to be part of the EPD programme at Allegion UK, and although it’s not currently mandatory for manufacturers in the UK, we urge others to consider the importance of EPDs in ironmongery.

She concluded: “The significance of sustainability is growing quickly, and it’s key for decision makers — whether at manufacturing stage or end users — to pull together and recognise this if we want to make a difference. By stepping up, standards can continue to be raised across all areas of the product life cycle, from manufacturing to recycling, and thus create better building environments for the future.”

The space race The average UK newbuild home is now smaller than ever whilst installers must increasingly come up with bathrooms that are ‘insta-ready’ in addition to considering how to overcome the space challenge. Purdie Proudman, Channel Marketing Manager at Geberit, looks at what solutions are available to help merchants and their customers overcome modern bathroom challenges — and offers some simple design advice to help make the most of the bathroom space.

igures show that new-build homes have decreased in size by 20% over the last 40 years, with the growth of apartment living contributing to an average size of 67.8 square metres for new properties.

It is inevitable that the bathroom is one area to have been squeezed, and the average size is now just 4.4 square metres. And we all know what two metres by two metres looks like after the last 18 months.

Despite this shift, the bathroom remains an important part of any home. Installers have to find the tricky balance between space

and sanctuary, particularly when you consider research carried out by Geberit in 2018 which shows that the bathroom is the most popular place to switch off in the home and an escape for many from our always-on world.

The need for that sanctuary has, of course, been heightened even more today.

If that’s not enough, homeowners are also seeking style in the bathroom. Fuelled by the rise of social media and reality TV shows showcasing aspirational properties, consumers want design-led solutions throughout the home, and that includes the bathroom.

It leaves your installer customers with a huge challenge. How do they create attractive, practical and hygienic bathrooms, in smaller spaces than ever before?

Hybrid future As with so many other aspects of the last 18 months, the pandemic-enforced closure of showrooms turbo-charged the greater uptake of technology as increasing numbers of merchants established ‘virtual showrooms’ or utilised other digital tools, often in tandem with suppliers, to ensure at least some levels of trading. With showrooms now open once again, a hybrid model seems to be emerging as merchants seek to balance the best of the digital advances with the welcome return of customers in person.

hilst many merchants had already embarked on a digital journey to promote their kitchen and bathroom offering to customers in the comfort of their own homes through immersive and easily-navigable ‘virtual showrooms’, the pandemic promoted many more to take the plunge. For other stockists, and also those without the physical space for extensive showrooms, technological initiatives from suppliers were able to help plug the gap.

As Covid restrictions ease, many of these digital ideas are enjoying further development and are being rolled out as merchants and their suppliers embrace the best of both worlds. For example, Lakes continues to progress its ‘Lakes Partners’ concept, with members able to embed an ‘online showroom’ within their own websites and allowing its showering space products “to be viewed and favourited so merchant sales and showroom staff can turn them into orders”.

Lakes is also offering merchant customers co-branded brochures to further enhance sales. MKM is one business to have signed up for the scheme and has recently benefitted from a joint brochure, with Lightside Product Manager Jonathan Phillips stating: “In a growing sector where we are seeing increasing interest, especially in premium products, there’s a real benefit in having a connected experience from online to physical showrooms. The co-branded

brochure is the final connection, so if customers want to take some more time, Lakes and MKM remain front of mind, even when they are at home.”

PJH, meanwhile, has recently announced the launch of its new Virtual Showroom, which brings its extensive Bathrooms to Love portfolio to life, allowing users to explore the company’s showroom in Cannock in detail, zoom in on specific products and view room displays of the latest collections.

The ‘digital shop window’ investment is described as another tool in the company’s post-Covid ‘e-tail suite’ and was created specifically to afford stockists easier access to

new product launches and aspirational displays for themselves. In addition, the virtual showroom enables products to be showcased far more realistically than is possible in a brochure, allowing stockists to visualise room sets and displays, and provide inspiration about how they would appear in their own showrooms.

The concept is compatible with VR headsets to give an even more immersive and interactive experience, whilst further developments will focus on “integrating it yet more into PJH’s online channel and extending its access”.

Having benefitted from the provision of remotely conducted training sessions, Blanco is planning to continue with its digital approach — in tandem with welcoming customers back in person. Craig Condie, National Sales Manager, said: “We are completely revamping our St Albans showroom at the moment and plan to launch face-to-face training sessions there as soon as possible. However, we do have customers who love the digital versions — which are all customised — as they can take advantage of all the great tips in one online hour, with no travel time needed.”

Supporting the sustainable shift As the impact of climate change becomes ‘unequivocal’, the need to evolve how we design and build homes and urban landscapes does too. Mark Shearer, Business Development Director for Key Accounts Merchants at Polypipe Civils and Green Urbanisation, explains how merchants can support the shift to more sustainable, resilient and ‘beautiful’ communities by working with key partners.

I

n recent weeks, the conversation around climate change has never been more prevalent. From flooding and heat waves across Europe and the USA alongside the United Nations’ landmark review of human influence on the world’s warming, climate change has barely left the headlines.

The past few months have also seen major developments in government environmental

policy. The Environment Bill is one such piece of legislation, focused on building and preserving an environment able to withstand the impact of climate change, population growth and future pressure on resources.

Additionally, in late July, the Housing Secretary, Robert Jenrick, announced an update to the National Planning Policy Framework “to enshrine quality, beauty and

sustainability in the heart of local decision-making”. Jenrick also introduced the National Model Design Code (NMDC) — a toolkit guiding all elements of new developments.

But what does this new legislation mean for merchants and their role in supporting industry to adopt these new policies and more sustainable building practices?

What it means for water As the UK Government has stated, ‘global collaboration’ is critical to lessen the effects of climate change and this need for cooperation applies to every aspect of construction. Due to their close relationships with solution providers across the built environment, merchants are a pivotal link between the supplier and the customer, on-hand to help specifiers navigating legislative changes and advising on new, innovative products that can help deliver more resilient landscapes.

Water, as our most valuable resource, is essential to building this resilience, and its management is a key area where merchants can provide invaluable support.

And as part of the forthcoming

Environment Bill and the NMDC, there will be changes to how we use and manage water resources.

With the former, water companies will be required to publish a water resources management plan, as well as strategies for drought, flood and overall catchment resilience. For catchment resilience, the Bill focuses on building capacity into the water undertaker’s drainage and sewerage systems to meet current and future demand and reporting on storm overflow performance annually. As a direct result, water companies will need far greater live and historic data to underpin new levels of operational efficiency and optimisation.

Developers will also be challenged to meet another part of the Environment Bill, Biodiversity Net Gain, with a requirement to achieve a minimum of 10% improvement in biodiversity on or near a site to get planning consent. And likewise, with the NMDC and the focus on greater placemaking, the same developers will be looking for ways to create the ‘tree-lined streets’ the Housing Secretary proposed.

The new generation To meet all of these emerging needs, it’s likely we will see a rise in demand for the next generation of enhanced sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) called ‘green urbanisation’. Innovatively designed, these technologies can significantly reduce the volume of stormwater that enters the combined sewerage network and allow its retention and reuse to create and support richer biodiversity.

Green urbanisation solutions such as

Polypipe Civils’ Permavoid are shallow invert geocellular sub-base replacement systems that manage surface water at source. Made from interconnected cells with unique geometric ties, these systems have a strong, uniform structural ‘raft’ with exceptionally high load-bearing characteristics.

Having the ability to store water safely immediately beneath a finished surface allows the solution to be used for irrigation, with surface planting sustained by drawing stored water from the raft through special ‘wicking cones’ to the soil above.

This capability, known as passive irrigation, as well as being net zero carbon in its process, makes such systems ideal for supporting the ‘tree-lined streets’ that form part of the newly announced NMDC toolkit.

The technique has much wider applications and can be used to create other versatile urban green assets such as blue-green roofs,

rain gardens, sports pitches and pocket parks.

Soon, green urbanisation solutions will also integrate with smart technologies, enabling authorities to pre-empt extreme weather events, whether flooding or drought, and manage and move the water in storage to prepare on a local or catchment-wide scale.

Preparing for the storm As proposed policy becomes law and the importance of climate change resilience only intensifies, merchants that can provide these solutions, alongside the support and guidance of specialist water management system providers, will be well placed to capitalise on an emerging market and help deliver a more aspirational, intelligent and integrated approach to how we manage and protect water.

Critical to this capability however is choosing a forward-looking supply partner, not only offering innovative, market-leading products for today but planning ahead with a pipeline of R&D and smart, automated technologies.

This future focus should also be backed up by comprehensive technical advice and knowledge that customers can access, and branch teams can call upon, to answer queries and questions. By collaborating in this way, the industry can help build more resilient communities for now and the future.

Sustainable landscapes Oliver Collins, Product Marketing Manager — Building + Landscape at ACO Water Management, explores the issue of sustainable landscaping, including the latest SuDS recommendations from DEFRA.

W

hen it comes to landscaping projects, sustainability is becoming an increasingly important factor. Incorporating Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) is key to delivering on this, and building professionals need to ensure they familiarise themselves with the ever-evolving regulations.

Indeed, within the last few years, sustainability has become a core part of virtually any building project. This is particularly true of landscaping, where there is a big focus on how water sustainability needs to be considered early on. In part, this is due to increasingly unpredictable weather, which has the dual effect of increasing storm-level events (and therefore heavy rainfall), but also lengthening drought spells.

In fact, there are even warnings that some areas of the UK could soon run out of water unless urgent action is taken. As such, building professionals are tasked with ensuring that alongside meeting their customers’ aesthetic and practical requirements for projects, they also pay attention to the key issue of water sustainability.

SuDS recommendations SuDS principals offer a framework for providing water management in an environmentally-friendly way. They outline some of the central pillars of water sustainability, and the latest recommendations by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) have identified the following as key standards when designing water management systems: Runoff destinations Everyday rainfall Extreme rainfall Water quality Amenity Biodiversity

While it is recommended that all six of these standards are addressed, one of the most important considerations is destination runoff. Particularly in the context of water sustainability, it plays a crucial role in maximising the utility of rainwater.

Essentially, runoff destination is the location water that falls on a site ultimately flows to. Regulations stipulate that it becomes

the responsibility of the property owner, with suitable measures taken to control this. This means careful design to ensure compliance.

Where feasible, DEFRA propose the following steps should be used, in order of priority: Using surface water runoff as a resource for non-potable uses, such as rainwater harvesting.

Opportunities should also be maximised across the site to infiltrate runoff into the ground.

Any remaining runoff should then be discharged to a surface water or above ground drainage system.

If this is not possible in the context of a particular project, then runoff should be discharged to a piped surface water drainage system. In very limited circumstances, where none of the above is available, runoff should be taken to a combined sewer (once permission has been granted).

With droughts likely to become more common, keeping water on site, through actions such as rainwater harvesting, will help to minimise their impact.

Using sustainable materials Another way to ensure landscaping projects are completed in a more sustainable way is for customers to opt for products that minimise their impact on the environment.

The latest water management technology means this can be achieved without negatively impacting performance, allowing projects to deliver on customer demands, while adhering to environmental principles.

In fact, this is a key philosophy of ACO Water Management, which became the first construction products manufacturer to join the CO2nstructZero Business Champions initiative. New product development was a significant factor in achieving this accolade, which is something that those focused on increasing the sustainability credentials of a project should consider.

For example, the use of geometric science has enabled the reduction of concrete haunching, which is saving 11kg of CO2 per linear metre installed of ACO MonoDrain.

Similarly, the development of ACO’s

stabilisation product, GravelGuard, has been updated to include a Grey Eco version, which is made from 100% recycled polypropene.

StormBrixx product, a stackable stormwater attenuation solution, is reducing transport to site by 75% compared to other similar products.

ACO has also developed a new polymer concrete — Vienite — that incorporates a substantial percentage of recycled material, maintaining equal performance characteristics as traditional polymer concrete. Equally, the popular ground

This applies to all projects, whether it’s large-scale or indeed a residential garden, and careful selection of materials can serve as a quick-win for building professionals.

At the same time, water sustainability is an issue that needs to be specifically addressed in landscaping projects. Adhering to the latest SuDS principles and recommendations will go a long way to ensuring gardens look great, as well as minimising the impact on the surrounding area.

art of its CO2nstruct Zero initiative, the Construction Leadership Council’s net zero carbon programme now counts Wavin among the latest cohort. This sees the leading plumbing and drainage manufacturer being awarded the status of ‘Industry Business Champion’ and brings together industry-leading manufacturers, contractors and consultants who are committed to uniting the sector to meet the government’s ambitious targets.

Wavin’s participation follows the introduction of a number of new sustainability initiatives across the business which build on its work to date in this area. And by becoming part of the industry-wide programme, it will work with other companies in the sector as well as share evidence of its net zero carbon initiatives, in accordance with the CO2nstruct Zero reporting process set by the CLC. The company has already pledged to reach net zero emissions by 2050 and states it has also set a “clear target to be the industry leader in sustainability by 2025” with significant investments being made across the board, alongside strategic supply chain improvements. For example, renewable energy now powers all four main production sites in the UK whilst solar panels and LED lighting are about to be installed at the main Chippenham site to further boost the clean energy drive.

In terms of transport, the delivery of over 100 fully electric fleet cars is also underway across Wavin, and 40% of its forklift fleet is already using more eco-friendly Bio LPG fuel. BRETT MARTIN CASCADE CAST IRON STYLE Pictured following its use in the redevelopment of the former Mission Hall, a listed Victorian building in the Bradmore Conservation Area of Hammersmith in West London, the authentic detailing of Brett Martin’s Cascade cast iron-style rainwater system was deemed to be an integral part of the restoration. BPF PIPES GROUP PLASTIC INSPECTION CHAMBERS GUIDANCE With advancements in sewer inspection technology, including more compact cameras and inspection units, there is an ever-decreasing need for manholes to be installed. Above-ground working is now the default, with below-ground working and access to manholes limited to specific situations (for example deep installations and intersections of multiple property drains). Accordingly, in Water UK/OFWAT’s Code for Adoption, Annex C Design and Construction Guidance (Version 2.1 May 2021), inspection chambers are recommended for many points of access to the public sewerage network.

The BPF Pipes Group has published a new guide which summarises where, what and how many access points are required for the construction of drains and sewers across all parts of the UK.

MAKITA 12VMAX CXT MULTI-LINE LASERS Among a series of new product launches, Makita has added two 12Vmax CXT multi-line lasers to its extensive range of site equipment. The multi-line lasers project one horizontal and two vertical 360° lines and include a precise self-levelling feature to enable simple setup, layout and alignment.

The 12Vmax CXT Red Multi-Line Laser (SK700DZ) and 12Vmax CXT Green MultiLine Laser (SK700GDZ) are described as versatile and durable, with a range of features to make work on site as simple as possible. The Red Multi-Line Laser has a range of 25 metres in each direction (50m diameter) while the green lasers of the SK700GDZ provide an increased range of 35m (70m diameter) and better line visibility in brighter conditions.

CONEX BÄNNINGER INOX PRESS-FIT RANGE Conex Bänninger has extended its Inox fittings range, adding an <A> Press Inox single press option that is available in 316L stainless steel in sizes from 15 to 54mm. WRAS approved, the fittings are suitable for a variety of commercial and industrial applications, including drinking water, heating and cooling installations, and rainwater harvesting. SMART STARLOCK BLADES The multi-tool blade specialist has announced the release of its new UK made Starlock range. RETURN OF THE KING? Putting the Lionel Messi saga to one side, the story of the transfer window has to have been Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United. Can the Portuguese megastar still cut it in the Premier League at the age of 36? Well, his goal scoring record at Juventus over the last three years (101 goals in 134 games in all competitions) suggests there’s no sign of letting up, and he’s still banging them in at international level — witness his recent late brace against the Republic of Ireland which saw him break the record for the most international goals of all time…

With the signing of Raphaël Varane as well, whisper it quietly but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has assembled a pretty impressive squad at Old Trafford. Not least with Mason Greenwood starting the season on fire, United have plenty of firepower up top and have a solid defence buoyed by the attacking instincts of fullbacks WanBissaka and Shaw.

The engine room could do with some reinforcement perhaps, but I think United can look forward to a very positive season. I still think Chelsea are the team to beat, but the Red Devils won’t be too far away.

DEDICATION’S WHAT YOU NEED Google journeys can take you to some fascinating places, but goodness knows how I ended up with this nugget of information…

Did you know that there is a Premier League player that holds a Guinness World Record? And I’m not talking about any footballrelated feats, but a genuine, bona fide entry in the famous book…

Yes, step forward Axel Tuanzebe — the fastest finisher of Hungry Hippos known to mankind!

The defender, currently on loan at Aston Villa from Manchester United, set the record to individually clear the marble-munching game on a pre-season tour of the United States back in July 2018. It seems to have been a pre-arranged attempt for the squad to tackle all manner of weird and wacky challenges as an official was already on hand, however Tuanzebe was the only player to hit the highest levels.

NUMBERS GAME One aspect of the Ronaldo story was the speculation about what number shirt he would be wearing. Edinson Cavani was the current incumbent of the iconic number 7, and Premier League rules state that a player cannot swap shirt numbers once a season has started.

No doubt to the delight of Ronaldo’s brand management team, special dispensation was granted for Cavani to take the number 21 vacated by Daniel James’ move to Leeds (a number favoured by the Uruguayan at international level since 2011…) allowing Ronaldo to slip back into the number 7.

Shirt sales have already smashed all records.

Interesting as though this little marketing farrago has been, I was much more taken with the news that Burnley lined up against Liverpool with a starting XI wearing 1-11. With Sean Dyche hailed a hero by the purists, tradition was respected even further with the team adopting an orthodox 442 formation!

Facing off against a team featuring numbers 14, 20, 21, 32 66 and 67, this was the first time a side has worn the full complement since Charlton in the 1998/99 season.
