Past, present and future

N

ostalgia is big business. The follow-up to 1986’s Top Gun is breaking box office records whilst the Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+, which sees Ewan McGregor pick up his lightsaber after a gap of nearly 20 years and continues the legacy of the now 45 year old Star Wars saga, is said to be delivering the biggest-ever audience for the streaming platform. Paul McCartney is even one of the headline acts at this year’s Glastonbury Festival…

Remakes and reboots dominate the multiplexes and the small screen, whilst collaborations with the legendary stars of yesteryear is a sure fire way to ensure chart success. Is this simply a lack of imagination within our supposedly creative industries or more that, in turbulent times, we yearn for something that feels safer and more familiar?

And whilst the current retro boom is hardly a novelty (looking back with a misty-eyed whimsy has doubtless been a human trait since just after the dawn of civilisation), it is perhaps all the more understandable given that these are exceptionally turbulent times indeed.

In little over a decade, from the global financial crash to the global pandemic, the world has been transformed. Throw in the Brexit referendum for a particularly British revolution — itself fuelled, in part at least, by the notion of a glorious past — to the desperate situation in Ukraine and a growing cost of living crisis, and little wonder that harking back to the ‘good old days’ provides such comfort amidst the turmoil.

“Just as resisting change is a fool’s errand, so too is failing to consider the successes of the past.”

However, as the saying goes, time and tide waits for no man. There is no alternative but to react to the circumstances as they present themselves, and it is heartening to reflect on the fact that a capacity to adapt is one of the defining characteristics of the merchant sector.

We have discussed at great length the ways in which it responded to the challenges of the pandemic, and the industry now increasingly finds itself at the vanguard of both a sustainable and technological transformation as decarbonisation and digitisation become perhaps the twin totems of modern construction supply chains.

Yet just as resisting change is a fool’s errand, so too is failing to consider the successes of the past. We often discuss the need to encourage new talent into the sector, but perhaps tend to overlook the expertise that so typifies it today.

To navigate both the present challenges and develop the leaders of the future, it is imperative that this knowledge and experience is championed.

Accordingly, it is fantastic to hear about the Institute of Builders Merchants’ new Mentoring Platform (see page 22) which aims to connect rising stars with more senior voices for the long-term betterment of the industry as a whole.

manner of different ways, and the sector itself is experiencing numerous threats and challenges. Moving with the times is, of course, essential but its core values of delivering superior customer service will never go out of fashion.

SELCO UNVEILS UK JOBS BOOST UNDER EXPANSION PLANS

In the very same week that the Queen marked her Platinum Jubilee, OwlettJaton celebrated its own major milestone of reaching 75 years. During three quarters of a century of trading since its foundation in 1947 by Mr. William May Owlett, changes in society, technology and the economy have influenced how the business has developed.

The late nineties saw Owlett merge with Jaton, creating the company of today which offers in excess of 30,000 product lines as showcased in a catalogue that spans over 450 pages. The business now operates from five regional sales offices across the UK, with the head office in Stone, Staffordshire, boasting a purpose-built 12,000 square metre warehouse to all ensure stock availability and a commitment to high levels of customer service.

Further growth for Selco

Driving forwards

Selco Builders Warehouse is set to extend its branch network from the current number of 73 to 100 by the end of 2026, increasing its selling space by more than one million square feet and creating more than 1,000 jobs.

The Grafton Group company has undergone a major expansion over the last decade, more than doubling in size, and it now plans to further accelerate that growth. Having recently opened branches in Liverpool, Orpington, Canning Town, Rochester and Exeter, Selco will also have a presence in Cheltenham and Peterborough over the coming months.

IBC Buying Group has confirmed it will be holding its first ever Exhibition and Gala Dinner exclusively for members and suppliers on 29 September. The event will be held in the wing building at Silverstone Race Circuit in Northamptonshire before delegates head to the luxurious Whittlebury Park Hotel for a star-studded Awards Dinner.

In addition to engaging with more than 100 of the industry’s leading supplier partners and benefitting from exclusive on-the-day product deals, members will also be able to discover the latest news and developments from the organisation — including some “very special announcements” as part of IBC’s ‘More than a Buying Group’ proposition.

Marching on together Last September, Rainy Day Trust CEO Bryan Clover completed the mammoth ‘84 in 48’ — an 84 mile solo hike non-stop over 48 hours — to raise vital funds for the industry charity.

Having sworn that he “would never do it again”, Bryan has decided to embark on another Ultra Hike on Saturday 10th September. This time, he has decided to “really pitch it against the clock” by joining an organised hike — the Thames Path Ultra Challenge.

The plan is to hike the 60 miles (100km) from Putney Bridge in London to Henley along the River Thames, non-stop in 24 hours. Bryan

is looking for a major sponsor “to take the headlines for all of the event marketing and social media work” whilst he says there will also be “the usual sponsorship opportunities” to raise money for a good cause.

BMF AGREES GROUP MEMBERSHIP SCHEME WITH LIGHTSIDE SPECIALIST, TROY UK

The business case for ESG

New group deal for BMF The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) has agreed a progressive group membership scheme with Troy UK, the tooling, workwear and industrial supplies buying group. The agreement sees 22 Troy members joining the BMF immediately, with up to 50 more following in January 2023. The two organisations have a longerterm plan to bring more of Troy’s 400+ members into BMF membership over the next three years.

Originally established in 1986 to supply the engineering industry, Troy added hand and power tools to its offer in 1990 and this has become the core element of the Group’s business.

It now provides buying power on a range of products from more than 400 suppliers.

The group’s revenue has grown tenfold to £300 million over the past decade whilst each of the first wave of members joining the BMF has a turnover in excess of £5 million.

BMF CEO John Newcomb said of the arrangement: “This not only expands our reach in the lightside market but will also enable a growing number of smaller, independent businesses to benefit from BMF training, business services and representation with government.”

Paul Kilbride, Chairman/CEO at Troy UK, added: “Having worked closely with the BMF for the last 12 months, we are confident that this agreement successfully blends the complementary skill sets of our respective

organisations. Our member profile has changed dramatically from our early roots in engineering and is now spread across a diverse range of markets, with construction being one of the largest growth areas for our Group in both recent and future years.

“Our new alliance and future collaboration with the leading trade body in the building supplies market will benefit all involved.”

As part of its drive to offer members added value membership benefits and a strong competitive advantage, h&b is launching what it bills as “the merchanting industry’s first ESG (Environmental, Sustainability and Corporate Governance) programme” to help to put sustainability at the core of every member’s business.

The group says that as well as legislative changes, the business case for a strong ESG strategy is now overwhelming — creating leaner, smarter companies with less waste and more internal and external stakeholder engagement. The new programme aims to help all h&b members — from larger multi-branch regional operations to smaller members — to design, create and operate an ESG strategy that suits their business model and creates value for staff, customers, and the business itself.

Beyond this, the aim is to take member companies beyond mere compliance and towards a common aim of sustainable growth and value creation.

Supplier Awards Over 249 guests from the plumbing, heating and bathroom sector attended the PHG Supplier Awards at the Carden Park Hotel in Chester on 19th May, including 191 supplier representatives joined by 58 PHG representatives.

Barbour ABI’s Annual Home Improvement Report has revealed the extent to which the Covid pandemic has impacted the home improvement industry, concluding that the pandemic “has fundamentally changed how we view our homes”.

A

necdotal evidence that remote working had led to a surge in home improvement projects is borne out by the data according to the leading construction industry intelligence provider, with domestic planning applications in 2021 jumping by more than 25% over prepandemic levels.

Barbour ABI’s Chief Economist, Tom Hall, commented: “The pandemic saw a huge shift in ways of working for many people and this is reflected in the extraordinary growth in domestic planning applications in 2021. There were reports of unprecedented levels of house moves as many sought the space and tranquillity of the country, but the data in our Home Improvement Report also reveals the extent to which many people chose to remain in, but enhance, their family homes.

Loft conversions, extensions, garden buildings, home offices and even garden landscaping planning applications surged in 2021.”

There was a significant growth across the country, but the North of England saw the largest rise in activity with levels of home improvement planning applications in the North West, Yorkshire and the Humber and the North East increasing by almost

30% over pre-pandemic levels.

Overall, although London and the South East saw the lowest growth they still accounted for the largest volume of applications.

Anna Scothern, CEO of the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC), said: “This spectacular increase in the desire to invest in improving our homes is fantastic news for the industry and the many small, family run, local businesses that are the backbone of it.

However, while the pandemic may have had a positive impact on the UK’s home improvement industry, the picture ahead is not entirely rosy. As Tom Hall explained: “Although the pandemic led to demand for home improvements skyrocketing, supply was thrown into chaos. Covid restrictions only heightened the pressure created by the challenging trading environment caused by Brexit.

“There is a deep unease over the medium-term future of the industry.

The cost-of-living crisis, inflation, economic uncertainty and political instability are all beginning to bite, and it is anyone’s guess at the moment how severe and lengthy these issues will be for the industry.”

IBMG ELECTRICAL AWEBB MEMBERSHIP June marked the two-year anniversary of Grant & Stone and Devondale (IBMG Electrical) joining the Association of Wholesale Electrical Bulk Buyers as a member. AWEBB is the largest dedicated electrical buying group, and the arrangement has led to increased rebate deals and improved manufacturer support.

Beyond the commercial opportunities, AWEBB is said to deliver an “integrated approach” which encompasses leadership and development programmes, industry support of the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC), numerous event opportunities and access to a network of 88 organisations with over 250 branches. Branch Managers of IBMG Electrical are enrolled in AWEBB’s LEAD Academy Management Development Programme, whilst electrical teams also benefit by actively participating in a network of engagement through event opportunities such as the Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA), national supplier functions and conferences.

Furthermore, a centralised warehouse boasting over £1m in critical stock under the Electracentre inter trading banner enables IBMG Electrical to offer customers an extensive range of products that would otherwise not be possible.

JEWSON MELANOMA UK PARTNERSHIP Jewson has joined forces with leading cancer charity, Melanoma UK, to help protect builders and its own colleagues from the dangers of skin cancer. The ‘Hard Hat Your Skin’ campaign will see Jewson stocking Nivea sun cream nationwide, while educating and supporting trades working outdoors with a wide range of activity.

The campaign was triggered by an increased awareness of the disease following the death of comedian Sean Lock. Shortly after he died last year, videos re-emerged of him talking about his belief that he contracted skin cancer while working topless on a building in the ‘90s. Jewson hopes that this increased awareness will spark conversations and action that could ultimately save lives.

According to Melanoma UK, more than 70% of skin cancers and melanomas found in the UK are the result of working outside without sun protection, with outdoor workers three times more likely to develop a melanoma than other people.

Unfortunately, research also shows that they are often the least engaged when it comes it being disciplined about wearing sunscreen.

As well as stocking Nivea sun cream at all of its branches, Jewson will be donating 50p for every bottle sold to Melanoma UK. The charity says that the funding will go towards vital screening equipment which will help identify possible problems for people before they become life-threatening. The merchant will also be carrying out a range of activities to raise awareness of the risks of skin cancer both in branch and across social media to get customers and colleagues talking.

BRADFORDS BUILDING SUPPLIES MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT Bradfords teamed up with the Exeter Chiefs and Somerset County Cricket Club during Men’s Health Week in June to encourage people to check in on their friends and colleagues to support health and wellbeing.

Sports stars including Exeter Chiefs RFC and England player Henry Slade plus Somerset County Cricket Club captain Tom Abell featured alongside tradesmen in a special video encouraging men to look out for each other, and the merchant has promised to donate £10,000 to charity The Movember Foundation when viewing numbers of the video hit 50,000.

The initiative is the latest in Bradfords’ ongoing efforts to support the mental health of colleagues and customers, including the provision of mental health first aiders across its business and mental health awareness training for managers.

Bradfords’ CEO David Young said: “Research by Movember shows that 47% of men find it difficult to talk about their problems and we see this as a significant issue for the building and construction industry. We hope our video will remind our customers, team members and the wider communities we serve to check in on their mates — whether it’s talking about any particular problems they might have, or just the chance to connect with each other.”

COWAL BUILDING AND PLUMBING SUPPLIES JOHN CAMERON ACQUISITION Cowal Building and Plumbing Supplies has completed its third major acquisition in five years by adding John Cameron Plumbers and Builders Merchants to its growing network of branches. The family-run merchant group already includes Reddance Building Supplies acquired in 2017 and Catherwood Construction Materials acquired in 2021, along with the three Cowal depots in Dunoon, Rothesay and Balloch.

The trading name of John Cameron’s will be retained and the management team at the Cameron’s Kinning Parkway Industrial Estate site in Glasgow will remain with the business.

Both Cowal and Cameron’s are founding partners of NBG, whilst the acquisition is said to make Cowal one of the largest general merchants in the West of Scotland with six sites and more than 60 employees.

John Cameron commented: “The John Cameron business has been in existence for more than 100 years, built up by myself, my father and my grandfather. It is never an easy decision to sell, but it was made easier by the relationship we have with both Stewart Shaw Jr and his brother Steven, and the knowledge that our people and our customers are in good hands. I look forward to assisting with the integration of the two businesses.”

MKM BUILDING SUPPLIES MKM HOME LAUNCH EVENT MKM Home has officially opened its doors to the people of Hull and the East Riding.

The branch is said to feature one of the UK’s largest kitchen and bathroom showrooms alongside an attractive landscaping and outdoor living display, a range of flooring and joinery solutions plus “eye-catching” tile designs in addition to plumbing and heating options that “highlight the very latest in sustainable technology”.

The result of MKM’s acquisition of Brooke Ceramics and bringing the two Hullbased companies together as one, the new outlet is described as a “game changing retail space” for tradespeople and homeowners alike.

Branch Director Rich Gosling said: “It is fantastic to open the doors of MKM Home and provide trade and public in Hull and surrounding area with a high-class showroom for all their home and garden needs. With the number of homeowners who are choosing to embark on their own self build projects increasing post-pandemic, MKM Home’s offering has been especially configured to meet these diverse needs.”

HUGHES FORREST CONSTITUENCY VISIT Responding to the net zero carbon challenge and how the building materials’ supply chain is evolving to support environmental responsibility in construction was the focus of a constituency visit by Ruth Jones MP, arranged by the BMF as part of its industry and parliament programme. The MP for Newport West and Labour’s Labour Party’s Shadow Minister for Agri-Innovation and Climate Adaptation visited Hughes Forrest, a 90-year old business based in the town, to see how it helps constituents to improve the thermal and energy performance of homes and workplaces.

Welcomed by the merchant’s Joint MDs Richard Brian and Nick Bulpin, Mrs Jones was shown examples of the sustainable materials and products available to Hughes Forrest customers in its six South Wales branches. She also heard how merchants are managing in the face of higher raw material, energy, labour and transport costs and the impact on local SME customers.

Two months after the introduction of the Plastic Packaging Tax aimed at boosting levels of recycled content used in plastic packaging, there was also discussion about new UK-wide proposals to reform packaging waste regulations to introduce Extended Producer Responsibility from April 2024. Ministers in Cardiff and London have decided to implement this new legal obligation in phases, starting in two years’ time with household and street bin waste.

KDS PLUMBING & HEATING SUPPLIES NBG MEMBERSHIP Sussex-based KDS Plumbing & Heating Supplies says it is looking forward to ‘buying better’ after joining National Buying Group’s growing community of independent merchants.

The business was established in 2017 and operates branches in Hove, Peacehaven and Worthing.

The Independent Builders Merchant Group (IBMG) has announced the appointment of Martin Stables as Group Chief Executive. Martin succeeds the retiring Nick House, who will continue to support the group as a non-executive director.

With 25 years of industry experience, Martin joined IBMG in October 2021 as Group Chief Commercial Officer, during which time he has “contributed substantively to the group’s strategy and formed a best-in-class commercial function for the business”.

Dom West has joined West Fraser, UK and Ireland, as its new Sales Director. With an extensive career in key sales positions — most recently as Sales Director and interim VP at Aliaxis UK — Dom’s role will encompass managing the sales team and wide-ranging customer base, looking for growth opportunities and promoting the company’s strong technological and environmental innovations.

The business is also in the process of evolving its sales organisation and Dom will be supporting its senior sales managers in the recruitment process.

Caroline Meredith is the new Commercial Director at IG Lintels. Caroline brings a wealth of experience to her position having worked for the business since 1979 and previously holding the positions of Sales Office Team Leader, Customer Service Manager, Commercial Office Manager and General Manager before her progression to Commercial Director.

The appointment is in support of the company’s ongoing growth strategy which is “achieved by delivering sustainable business and continually improving its customer service”.

Fibo has strengthened its sales team with the appointment of two new Account Managers. Roslyn Evans (South East) and Sophie Nugent (North East) joined the waterproof wall panel manufacturer at the beginning of May and will be responsible for the company’s growth in each of their regions, promoting the Fibo name and product, whilst creating strong relationships with new and existing customers.

EBP Building Products has appointed Paul Bernacki as Field Trading Consultant for UK & Ireland. Paul has a successful background in technical sales and brings with him the skills and experience required to forge and strengthen relationships with new and existing B2B customers in the builders’ merchant and construction sectors.

VIPSeal has added to its sales team, with John Atkinson joined by Lee Davies and Jon Hunt. The business has also realigned its sales territories, essentially splitting the areas into postcodes and allowing it to “focus on spending more time developing meaningful and lasting relationships with current and new customers”.

John Atkinson will now be looking after the AREA1 Region (Scotland, northern England and north Wales) whilst Lee Davies will take charge of AREA2 (most of Wales, SW England and the midlands) and Jon Hunt will manage AREA3, covering the South East and East Anglia.

Nine in ten builders’ merchants affected by supplier price rises Price rises and availability issues are again presenting a challenge to the sector, but merchants continue to feel optimistic about the prospects of their own businesses.

J

ust under 90% of builders’ merchants in May were hit by supplier price rises. Over 80% suffered some level of product availability problems too, as the UK deals with global and geopolitical problems.

While consumer and business confidence plummets, merchants are more optimistic in their own businesses than in the prospects for the market.

The Pulse, by MRA Research, is a monthly tracking survey of merchants’ confidence and prospects. Telephone interviewing took place between 3rd and 11th May 2022.

Problems faced by merchants Merchants were confronted by multiple challenges in a difficult period of supply uncertainty and inflation — Chart 1. Eighty nine percent said supplier price rises were a problem in the last month with almost half saying it was their single biggest problem (47%). Product availability (81%) was the second biggest challenge with one in three deeming it their single biggest challenge.

Among merchants expecting sales to increase in May, just under two thirds expected sales to grow up to 9% compared with April. Just over a quarter expected sales to increase by 10-20%, and a further 4% expected sales to grow by more than that.

Year-on-year, sales expectations dropped to a net +21% — also Chart 2. Merchants in Scotland (+69%) and the Midlands (+52%) were the most bullish. Expectations were relatively weak in the North and South where a net balance of merchants expected sales to drop over the period (-5%).

Of those expecting sales to increase in May compared to the same month in 2021, 52% expected growth of up to 9% and a further 30% expected growth of 10-20%, while 9% expected sales to increase by more than 20%.

While quarter-on-quarter expectations weakened for the third month in a row, they were strong overall. A net +36% expected May to July sales to increase compared to the previous three months (February to April) — Chart 3. Expectations were particularly strong among Sales expectations Merchants’ sales expectations weakened in May compared to April, but expectations remained at historically high levels (net +41%) — Chart 2.

Expectations were particularly strong among National merchants (+53%) and Scotland (+69%).

The difference between the percentage of merchants expecting growth and those expecting a decrease is the net figure, expressed as a percentage. A positive net percentage indicates growth, a negative indicates decline. Net zero implies no change.

Among merchants expecting sales to grow over the next three months, 58% expected sales to increase by up to 9% — Chart 4. Just over a quarter expected sales to grow by 10-20%, and a further 6% expected even stronger growth.

Merchants in the South and North were least confident (-37% and -38% respectively).

Year-on-year, confidence in the market continued to decline, with a net -10% of merchants less confident in May than the same month in 2021 — Chart 5. Large outlets were least confident (-38%), followed by Small branches (-17%). There were marked regional differences with higher confidence in the Midlands (+32%) and Scotland (+31%) and less confidence in the South (-26%) and North (-62%).

Confidence in their business Month-on-month, merchants’ confidence in their own business strengthened in May compared with April to a net +41%. Confidence was strong across all size of branches, particularly Mid-sized branches (+49%). National (+53%) and Regional merchants (+42%) were more confident than Independents (+17%).

About the Pulse A net +26% of merchants expect sales to grow in the six months May-October 2022, compared to the previous six months (November 2021-April 2022). Expectations were particularly strong for merchants in Scotland (+75%) whilst expectations were weaker in the North (+5%) and South (+8%).

Confidence in the market Month-on-month, a net -7% of merchants were less confident in May than in April. By branch size, Small outlets (-17%) and Large outlets (-19%) were the least confident. Regionally, merchants in Scotland and the Midlands were the most confident (+44% and +32% respectively).

The Pulse is a monthly trends survey tracking builders’ merchants’ confidence and prospects over time. Produced by MRA Research, the insight division of MRA Marketing, it captures merchants’ views of future prospects in terms of sales expectations, confidence in their business, confidence in the market, and the key issues and problems they experience.

Local heroes Steve Wharton, Manager at MPA Masonry offers his perspectives on the challenges facing the UK construction sector and outlines how the industry can succeed by increasingly thinking locally.

S

ince autumn 2021, the construction industry has faced a consecutive series of challenges which have pushed back planned developments and prevented shovels from breaking ground as originally intended. From the grounding of Ever Given in the Suez Canal to the current Russian-Ukraine War, a string of events — quite out of our control — has put massive strains on the supply chain.

This has led to material shortages, in some cases quite severe, particularly of imported structural elements such as timber and steel.

As readers will be well aware, the builders’ merchant sector has been acutely affected and is bearing the brunt of the impact, struggling to cope with the shortages as contractors, subcontractors, housebuilders, developers and even self-builders compete over shrinking stock levels.

Unfortunately, despite a positive long-term attitude, the short-term economic predictions are less optimistic and it looks as though the situation will remain the same for the meantime. However, as Chaucer put it so eloquently, “time and tide wait for no

man”, and the ever-urgent need for new housing stock and critical infrastructure persists, regardless of shortages.

We need to redress this dire situation now, and the good news is UK-based materials manufacturers and builders’ merchants have a mutual part to play in helping the wider industry overcome these strained circumstances.

From the outset, merchants need to take a long hard look at their stocklists and reappraise the materials they import, assessing where they can substitute the lack of international product with a like-for-like, domestically produced alternative, preferably one with a small supply chain too.

In my position as the new Manager at MPA Masonry, and having worked in construction for over 30 years, I’ve been able to observe the advantages these small supply chains offer in the good times. The building block manufacturers I represent are a good example, with over 95% of the product sold in the UK locally sourced, produced and distributed.

That’s just one of many different options, but they all start with the same motivation of the convenience of small supply chains.

Once again, I suggest the building block as a case study, and all of its constituents: cement,

sand and aggregate. They’re readily available within our shores. Most can be reclaimed from existing materials or excavated domestically, compacting the supply chain.

Building blocks also serve as a great example when it comes to thinking about circular manufacturing models. It’s worth noting that all MPA Masonry members follow a circular ambition, embracing the 5R principles — Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Repair and Recycle. A good example is the repurposing of pulverised fly ash (PFA) and furnace bottom ash (FBA). Dual by-products of the steel industry, the use of PFA and FBA, which have sat for years in slag heaps across the UK, are now being given a new lease of life.

Whilst worries around the rising cost of imported materials persist, it’s important to remind ourselves of the UK’s existing wealth of raw and recycled materials. We should also remember that whilst the current febrile climate is challenging everyone across construction, it’s also a great catalyst for material innovation, from composition through to design application.

With the Russia-Ukraine War at full pace, and global materials shortages peaking, merchants across the country need to start drawing up their strategies to weather this particularly intense supply chain storm. A greater commitment to sourcing products locally and sustainably will help to ease shortages now as well as investing in potentially commercially attractive lines in the long-term by meeting these challenges head on.

SUSTAINABLE BUILDING PRODUCTS Sustainability remains a hot topic and as tradespeople are coming under more pressure to specify greener, more sustainable products where possible, manufacturers are working hard to develop products which meet the new criteria. Hannah Sumner, Senior Product Manager at Sika Everbuild — a manufacturer which is committed to supporting UN Sustainability Goals — updates merchants on its most recent sustainability developments.

Rising to the challenge W hile sustainability regulations are becoming increasingly important, at the moment it’s a choice for trade users to make depending on which products best suit the individual project requirements. However, Sika Everbuild is committed to providing its customers with a range of products to suit different situations and requirements which is why Pinkgrip MS was launched as an addition to the company’s range and not as a replacement.

Launched earlier this year, the new grab adhesive was developed in response to growing demand for low VOC products for use on sites where solvent limits are a requirement. Part of the popular Pinkgrip range, the new product has been manufactured using the latest hybrid polymer technology to bring together the application and performance benefits of both the original solvent-based Pinkgrip and solvent-free Pinkgrip SF products.

As with any low VOC product, Pinkgrip MS is not just better for the environment but it’s also more pleasant to use. Crucially though, the product has been rigorously tested by Sika Everbuild to make sure that its low solvent formula does not come at the expense of performance.

save more than 400 tonnes of virgin plastic from being used this year alone. The company is also in the process of refreshing various in-store POS materials which will soon be created using strong cardboard rather than plastic too.

As well as packaging, the manufacturing process itself also adds to a product’s embedded carbon so any improvements that can be made here will have a knock-on effect on a product’s sustainability. Las year for example, Sika Everbuild installed 600 new solar panels at its factory in Leeds which will

offer a projected emissions savings of more than 228 g CO2/kWh per year — helping to reduce its overall carbon footprint.

Sika chemists have also recently developed Purform — a new polyurethane technology to meet future environmental and health regulations. It’s a sustainable and high-performance alternative to traditional polyurethane that is clean, durable and reliable.

And as well as its enhanced sustainability credentials, Purform delivers exceptional product application and performance properties, including creep resistance, tear resistance and bubble free curing. It also cures faster (even at lower temperatures) and lasts longer. The first UK products to benefit from its ultra-low VOC and low monomer

content are Sikaflex Pro-3 and Sikaflex 11FC sealant and adhesive.

The power of mentoring The IOBM — the Institute of Builders Merchants — has taken another huge step on its mission to promote and advance the profession of merchanting with the launch of an online ‘Mentoring Platform’ that should prove rewarding for members at every stage of their career.

T

he new Mentoring Platform has been designed to facilitate the MentorMentee relationship, by enabling wide-ranging access to industry resources and suggesting suitable matches. The simple, easy to use platform is open to all IOBM membership grades, from student through to fellows and corporate members.

While it will, of course, support the individual advancement of new talent joining the industry or in the early years of their career, the mentoring arrangement offers benefits to both mentor and mentee as a wealth of knowledge is shared between them.

Since the IOBM became a brand of the BMF last year, it has built its membership at every level, drawing in communities of apprentices, junior and middle managers and, most recently, the top 100 merchant influencers were rewarded by being made Fellows of IOBM to celebrate their contribution of the industry.

The skills, knowledge and experience of these colleagues is invaluable to the mentoring programme and will add gravitas to the mentee journey. Equally, the experience of young managers will also be extremely valuable to those just entering the industry, helping them to gain a strong foothold on their career ladder.

Early adopters of the Mentoring Platform have come from every level. For instance, Marianna Peet, Early Careers Lead at LEAP, the BMF’s apprenticeship partner, is an IOBM Student Member and has just signed up as a Mentee.

At a well-attended panel event at this year’s Digital Construction Week exhibition in May, ETIM UK aimed to “advance the product data conversation”.

Setting the standard D

escribed as the “tried and tested data standard for technical product data”, ETIM can trace its origins back to the Netherlands in the 1990s, the result of installers having “difficulty finding information to compare the performance of electrotechnical products”. The model they devised was soon recognised by wholesalers as having further value through simplifying the transfer of data within the supply chain, whilst the concept has subsequently developed beyond geographical borders and into other construction sector segments.

Arguably now the ‘best established’ standard — with data available for hundreds of thousands of products and used as an “international model for the standardisation and classification of technical product data” — the ETIM classification can help underpin improvements in efficiency, safety and environmental performance. Moreover,

manufacturers are increasingly adopting ETIM to ensure that the information they provide about their products is “accurate, complete, consistent and traceable”.

In recent years, the concept has been adopted by the Builders Merchants Federation (for building materials, HVAC and plumbing products) and the Electrical Distributors’ Association (electrotechnical products) with ETIM UK established as a strategic alliance between the two. Working closely with manufacturers, merchants and distributors, much is now being done to raise the profile of the ETIM standard within the wider UK construction sector.

With a broader capability of improving efficiency, eliminating errors and also facilitating digital sales via the use of standardised data throughout the supply chain, ETIM UK continued to highlight its contribution to building safety during a

panel discussion at Digital Construction Week 2022, held recently at London’s ExCel. The panellists, representing both the building materials and electrotechnical sectors, convened to discuss ‘The Golden Thread: the role of merchants, distributors and wholesalers’ and called for a more joined-up approach to product data in general — possibly mandated by an overseeing commissioner — and its importance not only for building security but also for carbon reduction initiatives.

Panellist Margaret Fitzsimons, CEO at the EDA, added: “ETIM is the standard of choice for the UK’s construction sector.

Manufacturers are responsible for supplying consistent and high quality product data which

can be transferred from one construction phase to another, and through the EDA the UK’s electrotechnical sector businesses are making significant progress. There is a need for a more joined-up approach to the UK’s product data challenge, including the adoption of a unique identifier to enable data from multiple sources to be amalgamated.”

Referring back to the specific panel debate topic, ETIM helps make the Golden Thread possible by “ensuring traceability and recognising that every point in the supply chain has a role to play” in minimising risk and ensuring safety is not compromised during both specification and installation.

Here, the interaction between merchants / wholesalers and their contractor or facilities management customers is a critical point in the construction process: the selection of relatively minor components — for which a buyer relies on information from the distributor — can have critical

safety implications. As such, distributors need to understand their full responsibilities in relation to building safety and the Golden Thread, and adjust their business processes accordingly.

Similarly, manufacturers need to better support stockists by providing the required information on a product’s technical performance whilst ensuring it is “accurate, easily understandable, can be accessed by those who need it and is up to date”. As such, ETIM UK argues that, via the ETIM standard, the use of consistent and effective product data will allow the construction supply chain to make real progress in ensuring better building safety.

rom its beginnings in 1770 in Somerset supporting local communities with farming and agricultural supplies, the company now operates from over 40 locations in the UK, selling through its Bradfords Building Supplies and Yeovil Plumbing Supplies stores as well as direct via its B2B and D2C ecommerce sites, and more recently marketplaces.

Previously, the builders’ merchant was using a mix of spreadsheets and manual processes to manage product information, which were both time consuming to update and prone to error. This was a problem exacerbated as its online order volumes increased (rising +26% in 2020), its numbers of sales channels grew online, and it enhanced its digital D2C offer.

Ruth Rose, the merchant’s Product Data Manager, explained: “We were trying to cope using a series of disjointed processes that meant any enrichment would take multiple teams’ involvement to complete a simple product set up, and we could not easily see what information was missing.

“Using Akeneo completely changed the way we work, giving us structure and the ability to monitor and report on the completeness of ranges. It then became clearer what effect the missing information would have from a front-end point of view on the website and was in turn easier to fix.”

what information was missing from online product listings and had to rely on suppliers who in turn did not always have the information, which impacted shopper confidence and, ultimately, conversions.

Fergus Bell, Head of eCommerce, said: “This was not a problem in our stores because we have staff on hand who are product experts and can use their expertise to guide and assist the shopper during their buying journey, providing real-time product information to support the sale.

“But as our business grew online, we weren’t able to offer the same levels of one-to-one service. And we knew, in our very competitive market, this was simply not good enough because detailed and accurate product information is a vital step in the journey to conversion.”

The problem of online product information management was also compounded by the fact that Bradfords trades not just on its own websites but through multiple marketplaces, including eBay and Amazon, which come with their own nuances and templates for product information that they require from merchants selling through their platforms.

Partnering with Akeneo, a leading name in product experience management (PXM) and product information management (PIM), Bradfords says it was able to overhaul its systems and processes by centralising all

product information in one platform to create “a single source of truth for product data and imagery, while removing operational silos and driving efficiencies”.

And by introducing Akeneo’s PIM solution and automating the workflow, Bradfords has cut the time taken to onboard a new product from three days to two hours or less, as well as helping its marketplace partners deliver “exceptional, engaging and compelling content” at the point of sale to meet the evolved needs of increasingly digital-first shoppers.

This is said to have built confidence into their customers’ online buying journeys, with more accurate and richer product information helping the firm to improve online conversions by 20%, whilst also reducing returns as shoppers are better supported through PIM to select the item that is right for them.

Bradfords is now looking to build in ‘product associations’ to further improve the customer buying journeys and is also investigating the system’s Asset Management capabilities to make it easier to introduce rich content assets, such as video, which are popular with the non-trade customers that now represent its “fastest-growing market segment.”

Supporting growth JTD Building Supplies has enjoyed considerable success since its formation little over a decade ago and the independent merchant explains how its business management software has played a key role in its recent growth.

E

stablished in 2011, JTD Building Supplies reports that it has used the “intuitive functionality” within K8 from Kerridge Commercial Systems (KCS) to make great strides in its development. Based in West Yorkshire, the independent merchant provides building materials and supplies to construction firms, trade customers and retail customers across the region.

Starting from a small base with eight people and a turnover of two million, JTD now has two full purpose sites and a

full-time staff of thirty-seven. Moreover, it has just recorded a turnover of ten and a half million pounds.

The company grew from values of sustainability and customer service, and was explicitly looking for the right ERP software when Managing Director Tony Sharkey was invited to attend a business management strategy course run by Goldman Sachs. One of his goals set through this course was to find a good ERP Software and, knowing that a number of leading builders’ merchants were using K8 software and after a lot of

research and comparisons, Tony decided to implement K8 at JTD in March 2018.

The transformation since then has been described as “remarkable”. Operations Manager Heidi Teague, whom the company recruited soon after K8 went live, said: “K8 has successfully contributed to our growth and overall performance. It is a system that works intuitively with builders’ merchants, and the beauty is that it keeps on growing.

To confirm delivery, K8 generates an invoice.

“Ultimately, the way the stock moves through the system is highly intuitive. All you have to do is press a button.”

As JTD has grown, testimonials about its qualities have spread through word of mouth, with Heidi expressing that the software’s “deep functionality” meaning there’s much more potential to explore: “The next thing is to get staff to record information about individual products, customers, and accounts. That will further improve customer service, and over the next eighteen months, we want to implement some of the K8 workflow apps.”

This range of workflow modules — including Sales Rep Portal, eReceipts, and ePOD — are all apps that can be installed on any mobile device to integrate directly with K8, empowering staff to conduct key business tasks from any location, whether in

the warehouse, yard, or on the road.

Heidi and JTD will soon implement K8 ePOD, allowing drivers to schedule the most cost-efficient deliveries on their phones, take photos, and record signatures for accurate and digital proof of delivery, all while keeping customers updated with their progress.

Flexible friend Clarkes of Walsham has upgraded it 22-year-old legacy system and is now looking forward to a more streamlined and efficient future.

A

large independent supplier of building, farming, and garden materials in East Anglia, Clarkes of Walsham is a family-run business carrying an extensive range of products and services across its substantial 10-acre site. Indeed, the firm also supplies country clothing and operates an outlet for cartridges and shooting accessories.

Proud of the valued service it provides to both trade and counter customers alike, Clarkes found itself compelled to upgrade its “ageing software” when support for the system was ending. Its significant limitations were also said to be hampering “everything we tried to do” whilst future plans of becoming paperless simply weren’t able to be accommodated.

With such an investment of time and money, the team at Clarkes conducted a vast search for their “perfect-fit” ERP software, intent on finding a solution that would match the company’s bespoke set of processes and ways of doing things.

In addition, with previously little visibility to the production side of their business, the new Intact works ordering processing module will, for the first time, let everyone see what the production side sees and reduce the number of manual processes they do in Excel.

BRADFORDS BUILDING SUPPLIES CREDIT APPLICATION SYSTEM INTACT BLUE ROCK SYSTEMS ACQUISITION Southampton-based Blue Rock has been reselling, implementing and supporting Intact ERP systems for over 16 years. Bradfords has scaled up its online credit application system, simplifying the process and making it quicker than ever. Under a new partnership with Experian, customer address, email and phone data are now verified at the point of customer submission, preventing any hold-ups due to input errors.

This new development follows the initial launch of the pioneering scheme at the end of 2021. Paperless from start to finish, customers complete a simple form on the Bradfords website, allowing them to purchase goods immediately against their account on a cash basis. Following a rapid verification and credit check process, a DocuSign contract is issued, and, on completion, customers have been able to purchase goods on their account using Bradfords’ credit facility.

Jonathan Chard, the merchant’s IT Director, said: “This new development takes us to the next level of customer service by making our credit application system fully integrated and quicker to use. As it’s embedded into our existing business solution, there’s no need for our colleagues to jump between systems to substantiate and trust the information, so it’s also easier for them to deal with new customer applications.”

MACRO 4 WOLSELEY EBILLING Wolseley is looking to encourage all its customers to switch to eBilling this year thanks to a new onestop solution implemented in partnership with Macro 4, a division of UNICOM Global. The new system is said to offer comprehensive self-service facilities and an improved customer experience and some 14,500 customers who were using Wolseley’s older third-party eBilling service have already switched to the new system.

The objective over the next 12 months is to transition the rest of its paper-based billing customers to digital and Wolseley CTO Roger Connett said: “We produce around 1.4 million invoicing and proof of delivery (POD) documents for our customers every month. It’s much more efficient all round to make this information available digitally rather than on paper, and of course there is a huge cost and environmental benefit. Macro 4 has helped us to show customers that it’s a better alternative by making the eBilling process frictionless and a pleasure to use.”

Prior to the implementation of the new system, Wolseley had outsourced its eBilling to a third-party document management company. However, only around a third of invoices were being sent electronically and getting more customers to switch was proving difficult. Keep on trucking Tippers and Bradfords are amongst a number of merchanting businesses to have invested in new vehicles from Isuzu Truck. PBM reports.

s part of the family-run Tippers Builders Merchants organisation, Tippers Tool Hire has seven locations across the Midlands and the division has recently taken delivery of a further two new Isuzu 7.5 tonne beavertail trucks. Typically carrying items ranging from 0.9 tonne excavators right up to 3 tonne dumper trucks, the new vehicles join four other similar specification Isuzus that have been in the company’s fleet since 2016, working out of depots in Birmingham, Lichfield, Uttoxeter, Stoke-on-Trent and Kidderminster.

Alan Elsworthy, Tippers’ Tool and Plant Hire Manager, said: “Since we acquired our first Isuzu four years ago, they have proven themselves to be extremely fuel efficient, with an excellent payload capacity. Most importantly, the specification of the Isuzus ensures that they are ULEZ compliant, enabling us to deliver to all areas, including the Birmingham Clean-Air Zone.

“As our tool and plant hire division continues to expand, upon fleet renewal we will definitely be looking to add further Isuzu 7.5 tonne trucks to the fleet, based on their excellent operational performance. Our drivers really enjoy driving the Isuzu trucks and, by specifying the Easyshift automatic

gearbox, the trucks are extremely easy to drive, both on local deliveries and further afield. The low-entry cabs also make access very simple, as well as giving great visibility when out on the road.”

Supplied by local ITUK dealer, Allports Garages (t/a Isuzu Central) in Stoke-onTrent, the two latest Isuzu N75.190(E) rigid trucks have been specified with Shawtrack low profile beavertail bodies and will be covering approximately 38,000 km per annum. Tippers estimates that both vehicles will be in its hire fleet for up to eight years, with all ongoing maintenance and inspections handled by Isuzu Central during that period.

Alan added: “We have a great partnership with Isuzu Central. From ordering to collection of the trucks, the service from them was fantastic, even down to arranging the installation of vinyl graphics and branding to ensure that the vehicles were ready to work from the moment they were on site. It also helps that Isuzu Central is closely located to our Lichfield head office, which makes it perfect for vehicle inspections and routine maintenance.”

business currently operates over 73 LCVs and HGVs, covering vehicles from 3.5 tonne dropsides and 7.5 tonne beavertail trucks right up to 18 tonne rigids and 44 tonne tractor unit/trailer combinations.

Down in the south west, and following the arrival of two Isuzu 3.5 tonne Grafter tipper trucks last year, Bradfords Building Supplies has added a further seven new Grafter 3.5 tonne tipper trucks to the company’s 210-strong HGV and LCV fleet.

With over 15 Isuzu Grafters now operating in its fleet, the vehicle is said to have become a firm favourite for the family-owned independent merchant.

Martin Caddick, Head of Transport, explained: “We originally had our first Isuzus way back in 1998, so our experience of them is well proven over the years. Last year, we took two new Isuzu Grafters as fleet

additions. For 2022, the seven Grafter fleet additions are all tipper models.”

The latest Isuzu Grafter N35.125 (S) trucks feature TGS tipper bodies and each truck is anticipated to cover approximately 20,000 miles per annum over an anticipated five or six year working life. Martin continued: “None of the

trucks in our distribution fleet have an easy life but the Isuzus have certainly proved themselves to be reliable workhorses. One of our 12-plate Grafters has now covered well over 250,000 miles and is still going strong on a daily basis.

“We also deliver a lot of product to domestic customer properties where access

can be very limited. Again, this is where the Grafter comes into its own as the narrow track of the tipper truck is excellent for this type of property. Basically, if you can get the car onto the property, then the Grafter will fit too!”

Laker Builders Merchant is celebrating the achievement of its longstanding ambition to be running a fully electric forklift fleet as part of its wider sustainability drive.

he recent delivery of additional new electric Combilift machines means that Laker Builders Merchant now boasts a fully electric forklift fleet across all branches. MD Steve Robinson said: “We’ve fulfilled our ambition of going fully electric on all our forklifts and I’m pleased to report we’ve reduced our CO2 by over 20 tonnes per year through this implementation. It’s a real win for the environment and a testament to the commitment Laker has to achieving Carbon Zero.”

and Sussex, says it is working to lower its carbon across the whole business not just for the future of the planet but also to improve the welfare of its team and give them a better working environment — for example, having a completely green fleet means that the yard team are no longer breathing in diesel fumes.

Once again, materials handling specialist Forkway worked with Laker to understand its requirements and any changes that would need to be made in the yard for the Combilifts to operate. Laker’s branch teams “outdid themselves”, getting the branches ready in a week so the new Combilifts could operate safely. Forkway’s Steve Noble recommended the CBE3000 because it was designed for the safe and efficient handling of long and bulky loads like timber that the merchant moves on a daily basis.

Being multi-directional, this Combilift thrives in small spaces, something described as “perfect for all of the Laker warehouses”.

Steve suggested the flexibility of EP EFL302 Lithium Counterbalance machines for the yards and the versatile Combilift CBE3000 for the warehouse areas, with the Combilifts also able to double up as a yard machine during peak periods.

He said: “Once the ideal truck specifications had been confirmed and we knew it was possible to meet the Carbon Zero brief, the challenge fell to delivering all of this this within Laker’s budget — with significantly reduced running cost across the fleet on both fuel and maintenance. With no engine oil or fuel filters to change, servicing costs greatly reduced over the old ICE fleet.

“Fuel saving are thousands per year. And with the Lithium batteries expected to last well over the five-year warranty period, the fleet will be providing cost savings and environmentally positive benefits for many years to come.”

The yard team at Laker are also pleased with how the new Combilifts operate, commenting: “It’s made such a difference already. It’s compact and takes a heavier load.

It gives a smooth run, and the battery lasts a long time, so we never have to worry about it dying on us.” A further benefit is the “massive reduction” in noise pollution as,

although not necessarily noticeable at the time, long-term exposure to loud and persistent noises can cause hearing loss.

These loud noises can be extremely distracting, as well as a risk to the other workers' safety.

Laker’s partnership with Forkway continues with the provision of new training for everyone so they can safely operate the Combilifts. They have all been provided with a training certificate and Forkway will be back to refresh regularly, whilst the supplier is also accredited by The Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register (ITSSAR).

Due to its ongoing decarbonisation programme, Laker was selected by West Sussex County Council to represent Crawley as its Low Carbon Champion to highlight to other SMEs what can be done, especially in the construction industry.

VOLVO TRAVIS PERKINS PLC SUPPLY DEAL SELCO BUILDERS WAREHOUSE ELECTRIC FORKLIFTS

Selco has accelerated its evolution towards a sustainable transport fleet by adding 12 electrically powered counterbalance forklift trucks. The builders’ merchant has also extended its use of alternative fuels by introducing the use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) in its fleet whilst it already has seven Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles currently in operation with plans to introduce a further three for the company’s delivery hub in Birmingham.

Both Selco’s delivery hubs — in Birmingham and Edmonton — will ultimately operate fully off a combination of CNG and HVO fuelled vehicles. The electric forklift trucks, which are manufactured by EP, are being utilised in Selco’s latest branch to open in Exeter, as well as Walthamstow and other locations throughout its network.

Travis Perkins plc is investing in a new fleet of 26-tonne trucks from Volvo, designed to support the Group’s ambitious carbon reduction target and maximise the safety and efficiency of its transport operations. Set to operate in a mix of Travis Perkins and Keyline Civils Specialist liveries, the multi-million-pound investment will see approximately 170 Volvo FM 330 6x2 rear-steer rigids delivered into service over two years — with 85 new FMs confirmed for this year; to be followed by around 85 more in 2023.

The new vehicles form an integrated part of the Group’s fleet decarbonisation roadmap, with each one benefitting from the latest Euro VI Step E diesel engine technology — engineered to reduce emissions and help save fuel without compromising performance — and with the capability to run on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).

HIAB MOBILE MAINTENANCE

Response times for Hiab customers are to be further reduced with the introduction of 11 fullybespoke service vans for repairs and maintenance assistance. The new vans are equipped with smart tracking technology to locate the nearest Hiab trained engineer, meaning support to keep cranes and handling equipment running safely and effectively will arrive in rapid time.

The investment in new vehicles follows a similar move last year, pushing the fleet size up to just under 40 vans in total. Furthermore, an order has been placed for another eight vans.

Stuart Goodeve, Depot Manager at the Hiab North depot (Northallerton), said: “The best way to protect your investment in Hiab equipment is to have it maintained by a Hiab-trained engineer. Heat is on for hydrogen The Energy and Utilities Alliance (EUA) reports that the government has committed to hydrogen heating for UK homes in a landmark speech by one of the key ministers responsible for energy strategy.

I

n a debate on the potential for hydrogen and a new HyNet Hydrogen Village trial at Whitby near Ellesmere Port, which is running alongside the Hy4Heat programme, the Rt Hon George Freeman, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, welcomed the trials as a vital first step towards gathering the necessary evidence for a wider roll-out.

He said: “We want to make sure that the trials lay the foundation for a wider nationwide roll-out. The BEIS-funded Hy4Heat programme has shown that the use of 100% hydrogen can be made as safe as natural gas when used for heating and cooking in the types of houses that were studied.

“[The trials] are designed to provide the government with the necessary evidence to take big strategic decisions on heating within a matter of two or three years. I know the ambition that colleagues have shared today to go further and faster is shared by the Secretary of State, The Minister for Energy and the Prime Minister. It is not lack of political will that is holding us back.”

Responding to the Minister’s comments, Mike Foster, Chief Executive of the EUA, commented: “The government’s endorsement of a hydrogen future using our world-class gas distribution network is a tribute to the hard work of the heating industry in developing hydrogen technologies.”

Mike also praised the commitment of boiler manufacturers to provide hydrogen boilers at no greater cost than current technologies — a commitment that was brokered by the EUA. “The Big Four boiler manufacturers’ price promise was noted by BEIS and has proven to be a decisive factor in the government’s commitment to a hydrogen future. The benefits for the climate, consumers and the heating industry have been made very clear and the government has responded.”

Put into practice In related news, Vaillant has spoken of its involvement in a new project which sees 100% hydrogen demonstrated for home heating for the first time utilising the existing gas network. The scheme is set to provide valuable data to be used in the next

stage of the government’s hydrogen roll out — the hydrogen village.

Located near a small number of homes in South Bank, Middlesbrough, H21 South Bank is currently underway — led by Northern Gas Network with support from DNV. As part of the project, Vaillant has installed its hydrogen boiler within a bespoke facility, purpose built to utilise the existing underground gas pipework. The boiler is the manufacturer’s first wall-mounted condensing boiler to have been adapted and certificated to operate with 100% hydrogen, according to the Gas Appliance Regulation, for installation in pilot sites in real operation mode.

The demonstration project will form the foundations of the next stage of the government’s commitment to rolling out a hydrogen village by 2025. The hydrogen village is expected to convert up to 2,000 occupied homes and commercial buildings with 100% hydrogen for a minimum of 12 months.

Mark Wilkins, Vaillant’s Technologies and Training Director, said: “As the need to decarbonise the way we heat our home intensifies, it’s now vital that the industry support as many projects as possible to ensure the government’s hydrogen roadmap can be successfully delivered.”

In the air tonight As the drive towards more sustainable heating solutions gathers pace, MKM Building Supplies has announced a “major investment” in the supply of air source heat pumps in partnership with Grant UK.

Cistermiser says the launch of its new EasyFlushEVO range will “revolutionise WC flushing by bringing together the previously unattainable benefits of non-touch and leak-free flushing”. Viessmann has launched two new-generation monobloc air source heat pumps — the Vitocal 150-A and Vitocal 151-A. Both models are said to be “ideal for replacing boilers in the UK’s existing housing stock and are exceptionally easy to install” whilst each is available with outputs of 10, 13 and 16 kW. Both the wall-mounted Vitocal 150-A and the floor-standing Vitocal 151-A have a high maximum flow temperature of 70°C (at an outside temperature down to -10 °C), meaning that in most cases they can use existing radiators and do not require under-floor heating.

PRODUCTS & SERVICES SIKA EVERBUILD SIKACERAM-621 FLOWFIX JOINTING COMPOUND Intended to make life easier for both merchants and their trade customers, a new packaging design has been introduced for the SikaCeram-621 FlowFix Jointing Compound. Designed for use with porcelain tiles available in Light Grey, Dark Grey, Buff and Ivory, the product is now available in sturdy 15kg buckets as well as bags, to make it easier for merchants to store and display outside.

This also makes it easier for trade customers to transport and, because each bucket contains three separate 5kg sealed pouches, it will be less wasteful as it doesn’t all have to be used at the same time.

SETCRETE HIGH PERFORMANCE Setcrete High Performance floor levelling compound is well-suited for smoothing screeds in high solar gain areas prior to the installation of a floor covering. Such locations are subjected to sudden and wide fluctuations in temperature and require a levelling compound that can withstand the stresses and strains caused by the material’s desire to expand and contract in response to temperature changes.

The product utilises a fibre-reinforced cement formulation, which performs a similar function to steel reinforcement in reinforced concrete. Of course, the slightly earlier start to the new season is all thanks to the (still crazy) decision to hold the World Cup in Qatar — the tournament kicks off in late November, which means the Premier League comes to a grinding halt in the middle of the month and doesn’t resume until Boxing Day. Transfer activity remains a little muted at present, but I’d expect things to heat up considerably in the next few weeks.

And aside from the confirmation of Man City signing Erling Haaland, the biggest football news seems to be that Jack Grealish has had a nice holiday!

Having a quick scan of the fixtures, City seem to have an excellent early run. Mind you, Liverpool and Chelsea also look as though they have a good chance to put big points on the board from the get go, so we can only hope we’re poised for a competitive title race when things come to a standstill after 16 games.

Whatever transpires, we’re here for it!

TIME AT THE BAR! The early rounds of the European competitions kick off in the first week of July and whilst they always introduce us to a host of names that — outside of their own supporters — only the most die-hard of football geeks will have heard of, the tale of FC Bruno’s Magpies is incredible.

Based in Gibraltar, the club was founded in 2013 when British teenager Louis Perry moved there and was struggling to find a team to get a regular game. Louis’ grandparents ran the local Bruno’s Bar and so, in time honoured fashion, a humble pub team was formed.

Bruno’s regular Mick Embleton, another ex-pat and a stalwart Newcastle United fan, came on board as manager on condition that his favourite team would be reflected in the name of the new club. And less than a decade later, thanks to some shrewd decisions in addition to the vagaries of Gibraltar’s

league structure and subsequent membership of UEFA, the Magpies now find themselves in the draw for the Europa Conference League!
