s you will see from our annual pull-out supplement which details the trading performance of the sector’s largest businesses throughout 2021, the merchant industry continues to evolve in quite dramatic ways. Significantly, despite a number of common underlying trends, the transformation is moving in a number of different directions — for some, the last twelve months have been a time of ‘strategic focus’ as companies such as Travis Perkins plc and Saint-Gobain Building Distribution UK dispose of their plumbing & heating brands to pinpoint a ‘general merchanting’ core as a foundation for success. And this targeted approach extends beyond product categories. TP, for instance, also divested its Wickes retail arm whilst Grafton’s sale of its ‘traditional merchanting’ operations of Buildbase et al allows it to invest in, and further expand, its extremely successful Selco proposition. Conversely, for many others, diversification is key — witness the Independent Builders Merchant Group’s growth being fuelled in part by the expansion of its electrical division in addition to the acquisition of a number of plumbing & heating specialists to supplement its existing strength in heavyside. Private equity funding very much remains a factor behind the sector’s ‘readjustment’, and scale is also a central issue. It wasn’t all that long ago three or perhaps four firms dominated ‘at the top’ — now, the Top 10 and

The broader implications have the potential to be far reaching, for competition on a local level to affecting the ‘influence’ of the buying groups, but the general direction of travel seems set for now at least. Indeed, the merchant sector is clearly an attractive place to be at present. Delving into the year-end reports and reading the submissions we have received in compiling our countdown, the post-pandemic recovery continues apace for streamlined operations in a booming market. However, behind the numbers there are plenty of references to the commonly understood underlying problems. Sustainability and environmental issues, ecommerce and omnichannel trading, and ‘people’ — from the recruitment and retention of staff, to the skills shortage and an aging customer profile — are all predominant themes in need of industry-wide solutions.

Concerns over supply chain disruption and material price increases also remain high. And, as if Brexit uncertainty and a global pandemic weren’t enough to contend with over the last five years, the harrowing situation in Ukraine — though it seems crass to discuss anything other than the plight of those still in or fleeing the besieged country — is already impacting upon the global economy. Even before the invasion, a cost of living crisis was building within the UK and the impact on the sector of even higher energy bills and rising inflation cannot be underestimated — in terms of both the disposable income of end customers and on increased business costs alike. Yet in a time of great uncertainty across the world, it is worth reflecting once again on the resilience of the merchant sector. The numbers and comments we present in this issue (with more detail on the PBM website) highlight its ability to adapt and thrive in the face of significant challenge, whilst the shockwaves of recent years ensure it is in a robust shape to navigate whatever comes next.

NEWS UPDATE BMF LAUNCHES UKRAINE APPEAL TO UNITE SUPPORT FROM MERCHANT INDUSTRY
Ukraine fundraising drive Software selection Family-run independent merchant MP Moran reports that it has chosen Intact iQ to help it achieve its ongoing business goals. MD Kevin Moran said: “We are delighted to sign up with Intact iQ which clearly stood out as the best option for the future of our growing business. Along with helping us to improve our overall customer experience, Intact iQ will enable us to push forward with continued online growth through its integrated multi-use platform. More companies have put their names to The Pallet LOOP’s charter, committing to explore how a circular economy pallet scheme could “benefit their business, the environment, and the UK construction industry as a whole”. Marshalls, Tobermore and the Wolseley Group are among the latest organisations to support the company which is working to reduce the consumption of single-use pallets and switch the sector to a distribution model founded on the principles of ‘recover, repair and reuse’. Due for operational roll out later this year, The Pallet LOOP’s aim is to eliminate what it describes as avoidable pallet waste in the construction industry by incentivising pallet returns via a cost-effective, easy-touse, deposit-based system. Previous signatories to the charter include MKM, Bradfords and SIG.

The Builders Merchants Federation is calling on its members and their customers to help raise vital funds to support those affected by the war in Ukraine. The trade body has created a dedicated appeal page at www.bmf.org.uk/Ukraine_Appeal BMF CEO John Newcomb is the current President of the European Federation of Building Material Distributers (UFEMAT) and he is co-ordinating a pan-European campaign, calling on support from the building materials industry across the continent. UFEMAT has also called on members to place an embargo on importing all Russian building materials until the war in Ukraine comes to an end. Funds raised through the appeal in the UK will go to DEC, the Disasters Emergency Committee, which works with the UK’s 15 leading aid charities to provide and deliver aid. John said: “We have received pictures from our UFEMAT colleague in Ukraine showing the devastation affecting homes and factories, and the brutal cost of war on ordinary people. His own daughters are amongst the millions who have been forced to flee the country to safety. “In addition to emergency aid, he told us that warm clothing, such as thermal and insulated workwear, is also urgently required.
Our members play a key role in the community and the unique nature of their work, and their stock of equipment such as workwear, puts them in a good position to help get much needed supplies over to Ukraine and we will be working with them to orchestrate a national response and get supplies to those who need them as quickly as possible.” He added: “In the meantime, our focus is on raising funds through our appeals pages in the UK and across Europe. If you are able to make a donation, please do so at www.bmf.org.uk/Ukraine_Appeal”
Two in a row Keystone Lintels reports that it has once again been awarded ‘Supplier of the Year’ by Buildbase in recognition of its “outstanding customer service”. Marking the second year in a row it has won the coveted award, Sales Director Chris Hemmington-Green said: “This award is testament to the hard work and dedication shown by all at Keystone, from Production, Logistics, SOP, Technical, Sales and Finance. For this to be recognised by one of our key customers is a real indication of the relationship and partnership we strive to develop.
“During what can only be described as difficult and challenging times, the whole team at Keystone have pulled together and delivered exceptional service to all our customers, and shown we remain the leading supplier in the industry. It is this mind-set and commitment that has seen us through the difficult times and ensures we are best placed to maximise the opportunities that are now becoming apparent as we start to move to some sort of normality.”

“WHAT NEXT?” ASKS BMF APPRENTICESHIP PARTNER AS KICKSTART SCHEME ENDS
Needing a new start? The first phase of the government’s Kickstart Scheme is to come to an end early for any new employers that may have been interested. The initiative offered funding to create job opportunities for 16 to 24-year-olds, and it is believed that up to 300,000 young people have been placed through the scheme since it began in August last year. Kickstart provides six-month job placements for young people who are on Universal Credit and at risk of long-term unemployment. The funding covered the national minimum wage for a 25-hour working week, employer National Insurance payments and automatic enrolment contributions. Cirencester’s Apprenticeship Management Group set up the BMF’s Apprenticeship Plus as well as Kickstart Support in Gloucestershire to aid companies in understanding and getting the most from the scheme. John Henry, AMG Director, said: “The jury is out on whether Kickstart was a complete success as there were a number of administration issues at the outset, as well as a lack of candidates due to the job market remaining buoyant when mass redundancies were anticipated which prevented the government’s target for 600,000 placements being reached.
“However, many young people have benefited through this initiative by gaining an employed position, often for the first time in their lives. It is a real boost for the individuals to gain experience and new skills while the employer gets to expand their employment base. Many may go on to permanent positions.” The issue now, says John, is how to replace Kickstart as a route to recruit for the employer and begin a fulfilling career for many thousands of young people that have been so disadvantaged over the past two years. With a team in place around the country, AMG says it has experienced a huge increase in apprenticeship vacancies and would urge employers to take advantage of the current incentives to complement their offers of employment. Furthermore, with over a million jobs lost to Covid and post-Brexit, repatriation to Europe, businesses are seeking to fill essential roles in a market where two jobs exist for every applicant. Indeed, AMG states that Apprenticeships Plus is an initiative that has “successfully addressed” many of these issues and has clearly demonstrated that by attaching government funded training to the job role, recruitment of the best candidates is considerably improved.
Transfer complete Following the announcement in December that it had entered into binding agreements to purchase the businesses, Wolseley UK has formally completed the acquisition of Bassetts, DHS, and Neville Lumb from Saint-Gobain. The agreement will see nearly 300 people ‘move across’ to join the
Wolseley UK business in what has been described as being “a seamless transition” with all outlets operating as normal with no change for customers. Wolseley’s formal exchange of contracts with Saint-Gobain for the acquisition of Ideal Bathrooms has also been confirmed.

As part of NMBS’ move towards becoming a more sustainable, low-carbon organisation, the NMBS Exhibition is “going digital” for 2022. The organisation has made the decision to “drastically reduce” the amount of literature it prints for members and suppliers every year and, as a key in-person industry event that traditionally creates a lot of printed material, the NMBS Exhibition has been a key focus point for this change. As a result, hard copies of the Show Guide will no longer be printed. Instead, NMBS has invested in developing a dedicated Exhibition website — www.nmbs-exhibition.co.uk — where visitors can find all exhibitor profiles, products, contact and rebate details, and plenty more information besides. The NMBS Exhibition is taking place on 6th and 7th April at the Coventry Building Society Arena, Coventry. Members can register for their free ticket online via the exhibition website using the same login details as for the regular NMBS site.

MARKET MONITOR in association with
CLC Product Availability report The co-chairs of the Construction Leadership Council’s Product Availability working group — BMF CEO John Newcomb and Peter Caplehorn, CEO of the Construction Products Association — have issued their latest statement.
A
mild winter has helped to maintain higher than average levels of construction during the first two months of the year, with strong sales in all product categories. There are good stocks and availability of most products but as also reported in the statement issued on 18 January (www.rdr.link/mag001), supply challenges continue to affect bricks, aircrete blocks, roof tiles, steel lintels, cable trays and trunking, manhole covers, gas boilers and some electrical products, particularly those using semi-conductors. If strong demand and consumer sentiment continues, these shortages and extended lead times are likely to persist to some degree at least into the spring. Price inflation, largely caused by a shortage of raw materials, rising energy, freight and labour costs, is of greater concern than availability. Price increases of 5-10% have been announced by many manufacturers so far this year, and energy-intensive products have increased by as much as 20%. Such inflation is proving a root cause of serious difficulties for contractors. Other ongoing issues include labour shortages, which are impacting all corners of the industry and show few signs of abating. Road haulage, however, has improved slightly as Government has worked with industry
to lessen the shortage of HGV drivers. For products produced in China and South East Asia, transport delays continue and costs remain elevated, with shipping rates still eight to nine times higher than pre-Covid levels and air cargo rates seven times higher.
“Price inflation, largely caused by a shortage of raw materials, rising energy, freight and labour costs, is of greater concern than availability.” The imposition of sanctions on Russia (and Belarus) in response to the invasion of Ukraine will likely have enormous implications and an impact on global trade for years to come, though the effect of the war on building materials supply in the UK is still to be determined. The region — including Russia, Ukraine and Belarus — accounted for only 1.25% of building products imported into the UK last year, however there are likely to be higher levels of direct and indirect exposure to some product components either through raw materials such as aluminium, copper,
bitumen, and pig iron and iron ore used in the manufacture of steel, or through higher prices in more exposed European markets. Sanctions against individuals with links to the regime in Russia and firms with Russian ownership may also affect the UK supply chain, whilst individual firms and other organisations are already taking steps that will have implications — for example, The European Federation of Building Material Distributors (UFEMAT) has called on members to place an embargo on importing all Russian building materials until the war in Ukraine comes to an end. Among a number of other supply chain risks (Russia supplies one fifth of the world’s nickel exports, used in the production of lithium-ion batteries, for example), Russia is also a major supplier of crude oil and gas. While the UK imports just 4% of gas from Russia, UK prices follow the European market and have doubled since the start of the year. Should sanctions be applied to energy products, replacing Russian gas globally will lead to even greater price volatility for energy intensive products. The Construction Leadership Council will be liaising with government to identify areas impacted by sanctions and the knock-on effect to UK construction.

Strong expectations for the next six months The latest instalment of The Pulse shows that surging confidence levels and positive sales indications continue to be impacted by extended lead times and high prices.
T
his time last year, the country was in yet another lockdown so, not surprisingly, merchants were expecting sales in February 2022 to be considerably higher than the same month in 2021. Merchants’ expectations are also very strong for the next three months (February-April) and the next six months (February-July). Confidence in the market and in the prospects for their own business is also high. However, long lead times and more price increases continue to affect merchant businesses, and merchants are concerned this will slow project completions and slow demand. The Pulse, by MRA Research, is a monthly tracking survey of merchants’ confidence and prospects. Telephone interviewing took place between 1st and 3rd February 2022.
Among merchants expecting sales to increase in February, 36% expected sales to grow by up to 9% compared with January, and 49% expected sales to increase by 10-20%. Eleven per cent expected sales to improve by more than 20%. Year-on-year expectations were significantly higher in February (net +64%) compared to the same month in 2021, when the country was in lockdown — Chart 2. Expectations were strongest among Mid-sized outlets and merchants in the North (both +79%). Among those expecting growth in February, compared to the same month in 2021, 40% expected growth of up to 9% and a further 37% expected growth of 10-20%. Nineteen percent expected more than 20% growth.
Materials supply Supply problems got worse again in February after improving in January. Indeed, the average score (4.24) is the highest in six months — Chart 1. Exceptionally long lead times and surging prices continue to affect merchants.
Quarter-on-quarter, merchants expect a very strong next three months, with nearly 8 in 10 (net +79%) expecting February-April sales to increase compared to the previous three months (November 2021 to January 2022). Expectations are strong across the board, and exceptionally high among Independent branches (+92%). Sales expectations Merchants’ sales expectations rose again in February compared to January, with a net +74% of merchants expecting sales to improve over the period — Chart 2. Expectations were strong among merchants of all sizes and type, and in all regions.
10 PBM APRIL 2022
The difference between the percentage of merchants expecting growth and those expecting a decrease is the net figure, expressed as a percentage. A positive net percentage indicates growth, a negative indicates decline. Net zero implies no change.

TRENDS MONITOR Among merchants expecting sales to grow over the next three months, over two in five expect sales to increase by up to 9%. A further 35% expect sales to grow by 10-20%, and nearly one in five expect sales to rise by more than 20%. Over two thirds of merchants (net +68%) expect sales to grow in February-July compared to the previous six months (August 2021-January 2022) — Chart 3. Merchants in the South (+82%) had the strongest expectations.
merchants more confident. Confidence is strongest among merchants in the South (+71%). Year-on-year confidence also improved significantly, with a net +56% of merchants more confident in February than the same month a year earlier — Chart 5. Confidence is particularly strong among merchants in the South (+79%). Confidence is weakest among branches in the North and Scotland (+26% and +29% respectively). Confidence in their business Merchants’ confidence in their own business strengthened considerably in February, with a net +69% more confident month-on-month than in January’s survey (+46%). Confidence is strongest among merchants in the South (net +92%). Compared to the same month in 2021, merchants’ confidence in their own business continued to build on already high levels (+68%) — Chart 5. Merchants in the South (+87%) are most confident. Branches in the North are less so, but they are still confident (+26%).
Of merchants expecting growth over the next six months, just under half expect sales to increase by up to 9%. A further 31% expect sales to increase by 10-20%, and a further 15% expect sales to increase by up to 20% — Chart 4.

■ The Pulse is a monthly trends survey tracking builders’ merchants’ confidence and prospects over time. Produced by MRA Research, the insight division of MRA Marketing, it captures merchants’ views of future prospects in terms of sales expectations, confidence in their business, confidence in the market, and the key issues and problems they experience. This report is the 34th in the series, with interviews conducted by MRA Research between 1st and 3rd February 2022. Each month a representative sample of 100 merchants is interviewed. The sample is balanced by region, size and type of merchant, including nationals, regional multi-branch independents, and smaller independent merchants.

MERCHANT FOCUS
New branches, acquisitions, sustainability, training provision and the latest customer service initiatives all feature in this month’s round-up of some of the most recent merchant sector news stories.
JEWSON NET ZERO BRANCH The Jewson branch in Wishaw has become the national builders’ merchant’s first ever net zero carbon site with the “completely redeveloped” location said to set a benchmark for future branches, reflecting the company’s dedication to reach net zero emissions by 2050. The changes were supported by parent company Saint-Gobain’s Carbon Fund, which awarded the branch nearly £240,000 towards the redevelopment. The funding has allowed the branch to generate its own electricity through renewable energy, with improvements including the addition of solar photovoltaic panels on the roof, air source heating and a heat recovery system to capture waste heat within the building. Additional measures include new external and internal LED lighting and a new 180mm insulated roof to improve energy efficiency, new electric charging facilities for cars and vans and a brandnew fleet of electric fork lift trucks. In addition, all of the products used are also available to Jewson customers through the Making Better Homes range. Furthermore, the merchant’s Making Better Homes hub is designed to bring together “relevant tips and guidance for tradespeople on how to create comfortable and more sustainable living spaces for their customers”. Allan Davidson, Regional Director at Jewson, commented: “The Wishaw branch is a shining example of how we take energy efficiency and sustainability seriously at Jewson. This is just the tip of the iceberg, and in the coming years you can expect to see plenty of changes and improvements being made to our branches and across our offering.”

LORDS GROUP TRADING AW LUMB ACQUISITION Lords Group Trading has acquired A.W. Lumb & Co, extending the company’s geographic reach in the Midlands & North of England. Established in 1964 and family-owned until a management buyout in 2017, A.W. Lumb operates from depots in Tamworth and Dewsbury. Shanker Patel, Chief Executive Officer of Lords, said: “A.W. Lumb is highly regarded in its local markets, respected for its product expertise and superior service levels and we are delighted to welcome its 77 colleagues and senior management to our team. Furthermore, this acquisition is a major milestone in our growth and supports our model of working with management teams.”
IBMG SOUTH WEST EXPANSION The Independent Builders Merchant Group (IBMG) has announced the acquisition of Cornish Fixings (Redruth) — a single branch builders’ merchant originally established in 2011. This latest acquisition continues IBMG’s strategy of developing its divisions through a combination of acquisition, new site development and organic growth. The move is said to strengthen its south west division, extending Group Company RGB’s presence in Cornwall and “providing a strong platform for further growth”. Jon Sawyer, its former owner and the firm’s founder, will continue with the business working with RGB MD Andy Gamble and CEO Kevin Fenlon. IBMG’s electrical division, meanwhile, has also expanded its operation in Cornwall with the opening of its latest Devondale electrical wholesaler in Bude. The bespoke new site is said to complement the brand’s existing 11 branch network already operating from Devon to Somerset, and expands the division’s full offering to 21 specialist electrical wholesale branches across the South of England.
DULUX DECORATOR CENTRE NEW BRANCH AND TRAINING ACADEMY The iconic Dulux dog has officially opened the brand-new Dulux Decorator Centre store and Dulux Academy in Scunthorpe. The newly relocated store is said to be much bigger than the previous location whilst the new Dulux Academy training facility offers an opportunity for professional painters and decorators to access face-to-face, industry-leading training courses to help them learn new skills. With more stores incorporating the Dulux Academy concept set to open in 2022, the new Scunthorpe operation follows the opening of three such facilities last year — Norwich, Altrincham and West Thurrock.

TRAVIS PERKINS REAL TIME DELIVERY TRACKING In what it describes as a first for the UK builders’ merchant sector, Travis Perkins has launched a nationwide, real time delivery tracking and management system for its customers. The national merchant says the service is “designed to take the guesswork out of deliveries, and means customers will know exactly when to expect their local branch delivery for building supplies and Benchmarx kitchens and joinery products”. Rolled out across the wider businesses within the Travis Perkins Group, including Keyline and CCF, it adds that account customers can benefit from a number of options including free delivery from the local branch, nominating their delivery day of choice (including next day), plus text message and email updates with real time delivery tracking. Aligning with its strategy to “deliver best-in-class service to trade customers”, users will also receive notifications when the delivery is in a 20-minute distance, plus emailed proof of delivery. Digital Operations Director James How said: “The industry has been behind other sectors — up to now. We wanted to challenge ourselves across our 550+ strong national branch network to give our customers real-time delivery tracking and management. Now, we are proud to lead the way for the sector by making sure our trade customers can save time and money with real time delivery tracking.” The latest initiative builds on TP’s plan for 50 new or relocated branches in the next three years as the brand embarks on an “ambitious redevelopment, relocation and refurbishment programme, designed to improve the customer experience both in person and digitally”.
SELCO APPRENTICESHIPS GRADUATION A recent graduation ceremony in Birmingham, attended by West Midlands Mayor Andy Street, saw more than 50 branch team members from Selco Builders Warehouse receive nationally recognised qualifications. The vast majority of the graduates came from the first phase of Selco’s Rising Stars scheme, a management training programme designed in conjunction with training provider Realise to enhance the careers of colleagues. Other team members recognised at the ceremony included those who had completed Selco’s Driver Academy, which offers people the chance to retrain and become fully qualified HGV drivers. In total, 90 Selco employees completed apprenticeships during the pandemic, with more than 60% of those already rewarded with promotion. Marc Lucock, HR Director at Selco Builders Warehouse, said: “The idea behind Rising Stars is to give a high number of branch colleagues the chance to enhance their skillset and leave them well-positioned to progress their careers with Selco. We’re using our Apprenticeship Levy contributions to fund the scheme and we are utilising a course with a high level of practical elements, which means that our colleagues are putting into practice their learnings on a day-to-day basis.”

HUWS GRAY BRICK & STONE (SCOTLAND) The Huws Gray Group is continuing its ambitious growth plans with the acquisition of West Lothian-based merchant, Brick and Stone (Scotland). Eddie Hernon, MD of Huws Gray Group company PDM Buildbase, said: “We are delighted to add our first specialist brick centre in Scotland and are truly optimistic for what the future holds. To acquire a company with such a specialised focus presents a great opportunity to deepen our knowledge of this category and grow our business within the region.” Mark Findlay, Director of Brick and Stone (Scotland), added “We are excited for the future and, along with fellow director Ian White, we look forward to remaining with the business and supporting the next phase of growth. It’s very much business as usual as we look to improve stock levels with the support of the group.”

TRAINING ZONE
Study that suits The BMF Diploma in Merchant Management (or DiMM for short) has gone through many developments and changes over the years and has “successfully advanced hundreds of managers and aspiring managers in the builders’ merchant industry”. And now there are even more ways to study for the qualification…
D
eveloped specifically for merchants entering management, and taking 18 months, nine assessments, and two projects to complete, the DiMM is a truly bespoke qualification. The programme is based wholly on the merchant industry, and written in language and scenarios that all merchants will relate to and understand. The course has been shown not only to improve an individual’s confidence and competence in their daily operations, but also to enhance customer, supplier and staff relationships. And as every employer knows, improving the skills of current colleagues and promoting from within is generally far more beneficial to their business than hiring from outside their organisation. This success and widespread national demand for DiMM has led to the development of a variety options for undertaking and completing the course, to accommodate the requirements of the broadest range of merchant operations, whether national, regional or independent. Aside from keeping the programme routinely up to date, the Covid-19 pandemic required a special response, and helped usher in the Diploma Online. The DiMM is now fully available in group webinar format, using the latest technology and innovations to deliver a great

distance learning experience online. To help those who are unsure if they want to commit to the whole programme in one go, the BMF Certificate in Merchant Management (CiMM) is a shortened programme that covers the first three Modules of the full Diploma and takes only six months to complete. While it is a standalone qualification, the shorter course acts as
“As every employer knows, improving the skills of current colleagues and promoting from within is generally far more beneficial to their business than hiring from outside their organisation.” an introduction to the full Diploma — and a majority on every group that has joined the CiMM programme has decided to continue to the DiMM, completing the remaining six Modules after a break. The latest evolution brings about the Certificate and Diploma ‘Solo’ programmes, an ideal format for one-to-one Distance
Learners with distinct advantages for some candidates. First, there is no waiting time for a group to be formed — candidates will be assigned their own personal tutor and can start the course at any time. This is the ideal solution for companies with just one or two potential candidates for either programme. It is also well suited to those who enjoy working alone or those with dyslexia, and who find it easier to self-motivate, rather than working as part of a larger group. In summary, the programme has grown into: • A fully up-to-date, nine Module Diploma (DiMM). • A nine Module group distance learning programme (DiMM online). • A shortened three Module Certificate (CiMM), which can lead to the DiMM. • A one-to-one distance learning programme (CiMM/DiMM Solo). The BMF Diploma in Merchant Management is the go-to qualification for those embarking on their management journey, and for those looking to hone and refine their current managerial skillset.

MERCHANT MARKETING Jones Digital outlines its 2022 Digital Marketing Trends Forecast, sharing its thinking on how the KBB, Home Interiors and Build & Construction industries can “harness the power of the latest marketing technology to raise their profiles and deliver amazing customer service, 24/7”.

“
he past two years have intensified consumer reliance on digital technology as a tool for connection across all aspects of their lives,” explains Peter Jones, the Founder and Managing Director of Jones Digital. “With 84% of British adults owning a smart phone and 96% having internet access, up from 57% back in 2006, what was once a brave new world of ‘having the internet in your pocket’ has now become the norm and has revolutionised everyone who sells products or services. “Like it or not, we all have a digital footprint today, so it makes sense to make the most of it.” During the pandemic, increasing demand for personalisation in offline and online experiences was evident with a wealth of podcasts and video content for users to choose from. Peter said: “Having a strong message and an in-depth understanding of your target audience’s needs is crucial,” noting that creating a customer journey “needs to begin as soon as a potential customer lands on your website or clicks onto your social media feed”.
As such, Peter shares how to capitalise on the digital trends in the year ahead: Embrace the power of video Peter says: “I completely understand that in our sector we tend to let our amazing products and services speak for themselves, and in the physical world it’s easy to invite customers to ‘feel the quality’ once we’ve built up a rapport and give them samples or brochures to take home. However, using video marketing can really speed up the customer journey so that customers and are already fired up to meet your people and have done their research. “You don’t need to shoot a commercial — video marketing is all about providing easy to consume information which sparks curiosity and distils the essence of your brand for your customer, making it easy for them to decide to buy from you. Once you have your own content, it’s easy to post it on social media channels as well as your website and also to your email list. “When it is done well, you will have an evergreen resource which you can use to answer FAQs in a personable and professional way.”

Invest in storytelling Peter argues that your ‘digital story’ needs to be fully integrated into your marketing strategy, rather than regarded as a ‘nice to have’ bolt-on. He said: “Time and time again, I see that brands are focused on themselves rather than the features and benefits they offer to the customer. Get into the nitty gritty about how you can save your

customer time, money and effort so they can quickly grasp what sets you apart from the competition. “In 2022, information comes like white noise so cut through with an authentic, straight forward digital story which gives them instant clarity about what you can offer.” Plug into virtual experiences “The move to hybrid working during the pandemic and restrictions during lockdown ensured that retailers and manufacturers had to get creative about connection and this trend is set to continue,” explained Peter. “We are finding that virtual showrooms are a
In his role as Founder and MD of executive recruitment agency to the KBB and builders’ merchants sector, Peter Jones discusses the rise of the four-day week. The recent lockdown measures have emphasised the number of people working flexible hours, something which has increased five-fold in the last two decades. According to a recent report by Forbes, 70% of UK employees also feel that flexible working makes a job more attractive to them whilst 30% would prefer flexible working to a pay rise. I recognise this concept will be difficult to translate across traditional ‘retail’ sectors, however it will inevitably become part of everyone’s future and so I believe companies should not shy away from new opportunities to support and work with their staff. Indeed, as a specialist in industries typically regarded as ‘male-dominated’, I have witnessed a sea change in recruitment, as employee engagement is now regarded as a fundamental concept in business, combined with unbiased equal opportunities. Ultimately, your greatest asset is your relationship with your team and achieving results by empowering staff is the best way to gain the right level of productivity and form a common purpose. However, there need to be employer benefits too — and these are being realised through increased sales, lower overheads and improved employee retention, which will breed loyalty and more positive culture. Similarly, reports are showing that implementing more flexible working hours can also encourage lower sickness rates and a more equitable, transparent relationship between employee and employer. ■ For more details on Foyne Jones’ recruitment services, enter the shortcode www.rdr.link/mag002

great asset to KBB retailers as customers are self-selecting and have done their research before they visit in person, which means the buying process is accelerated. “Knowing how much retailers invest in creating beautiful showrooms, it makes sense to bring them to life online so that they get maximum exposure outside of trading hours. You can also seamlessly include promotional videos for core products, giving your customers access to as much information as you wish, so that your showroom is effectively an extra member of your sales team.” In closing, Peter adds: “Remember not to underestimate just how powerful a personal brand is within a business, as these too can form building blocks for you and your customers. Embrace the fact we’re all the same and just be yourself, and share personalities within your company by encouraging everyone from junior level right up to management to have a voice online. As long as you’re all speaking with ‘one brand voice’, you’ll be able to create adhocracy values where innovation, change and growth become part of your everyday culture and customer relations — old and new.” ■ For more information on the bespoke digital marketing packages offered by Jones Digital, enter the shortcode www.rdr.link/mag003

WOMEN IN MERCHANTING
Leading by example As a woman that has risen to the top in a predominately male-dominated sector Billie Hardy, Branch Director of MKM Building Supplies’ Morpeth branch, explains how she has witnessed first-hand the ways in which the attitudes and perceptions towards women in construction have changed for the better over the years — and how much more diverse the industry continues to become. Sharing her experience with PBM, Billie’s success story is one she hopes can inspire more women to think seriously about developing a career within the sector.
Q A
What attracted you to the building and construction industry? It’s an industry that been part of my family for many years. My Dad owns a building company — JMM Building & Civil Engineering — and there are other trades in the family too. I spent many happy Saturday mornings as a young girl going with my Dad into our local merchant whilst he picked up supplies, and pretty much grew up on building sites at the weekends so I could spend time with him. The people side of things always stuck with me and was something I was interested in. However, my first professional job was actually in a customer services role in the
finance sector, but this wasn’t for me. I was a bit lost career wise at 20 years old, but a sixmonth maternity contract came up in an administration role at a builders’ merchant that was closer to my home.
Q A
And what happened next? The maternity contract gave me a solid grounding in the merchant sector and the endless possibilities it could provide me as a career path. Working from the bottom up gave me a good understanding of the industry as a whole too, which I quickly realised was all about people. It was definitely something I wanted to pursue.
www.professionalbuildersmerchant.co.uk
Based on my performance in that early maternity contract, I was offered a full-time job and took it. Over the next 14 years, I’ve worked extremely hard to develop my career. I’m very ambitious, but at the heart of what makes me tick is providing exceptional customer service, delivered with a smile on my face and with a bit of banter thrown in for good measure. This has given me the chance to develop my experience and knowledge, from working on the trade counter to sales, customer service and operational roles, culminating with the opportunity to become an assistant branch manager, which I held for a number of years.

WOMEN IN MERCHANTING
When the opportunity to work for MKM came about, I grasped it with both hands. I knew the brand well and had a pretty good idea that this was a merchant that did things differently. Everyone I spoke to seemed so happy at MKM, and the company’s ‘customer first’ ethos sat perfectly with my own objectives and aspirations of how a business should be run.
Q A
What are the best aspects of your role at MKM Morpeth? It’s an extremely exciting and diverse role but, as a massive advocate of providing outstanding customer service, what MKM and I value the most is looking after all of our staff and customers and making sure they are happy. If people enjoy coming to work or coming into your branch with a smile on their face, it not only creates a fantastic environment to work in but also a positive and welcoming one for our customers to come into and feel a part of.
Q
Tell us about your experiences as a woman in the building and construction sector?
24 PBM APRIL 2022
A
Since I started in the industry, the sector has changed dramatically for the better — and continues to do so in a progressive way. In the early days, if a customer saw a woman in the branch, many would question if that woman knew what they were talking about, and they’d be plenty of banter that could sometimes step over the line. There were also instances where a customer you were dealing with would ask to speak to one of the lads instead, so they could double check the information I had given them was right. I literally heard it all! The world we live in today, certainly within the building industry, is completely different. That’s not to say that society as a whole doesn’t still have work to do but my experience at the trade counter is only good news for how far the industry has come. It’s a much more accepting sector of women, which I believe has happened for a number of reasons. Firstly, there’s more and more women and diversity coming into the industry that is helping to push the sector as a whole forward. We also bring a slightly different skill set, thought process and ways
to approach various commercial challenges — which is helping it progress through more ideas, shared learnings and enhanced processes. Ultimately, perceptions have definitely changed. I don’t hear what I used to many years ago; customers understand we do know what we are talking about and there’s so much more respect for women in what is still a male-dominated sector.
Q A
What are the benefits you see of having a diverse team and working in a diverse business? Some of the biggest challenges I faced over the years link back to perceptions and there not being many women in the industry, never mind a woman in a senior position, and some people didn’t look kindly on this. But having diversity in the workplace is good news for any business, whatever industry you work in. It makes workplaces better, with different cultures and ideas, and it makes people feel more comfortable. You don’t have as much judgement because there are different people from all different places
www.professionalbuildersmerchant.co.uk
023_PBM_APR22_Layout 1 15/03/2022 22:48 Page 25
and backgrounds, and it can also make customers feel more welcome and at ease.
Q A
Finally, what do you most like about working for MKM?
Having worked within the nationals for many years, there’s no doubt that MKM does things differently. The brand is extremely strong in the areas in which we operate, and we have developed an enviable reputation in the market for providing outstanding levels of customer service, in a friendly and welcoming environment. I believe the MKM business model, which gives branch directors a stake in the business and the freedom to run their branch as they see fit, drives this. On a local level, branch directors feel empowered to make the right decisions for our customers’ needs at the coalface, but with the backing of MKM central support. This gives each branch individuality and the competitive edge, where customers aren’t just a number. We are part of their success and much as they are ours.

SPECIAL REPORT: CAVITY WALL INSULATION
Helen Moss, Technical Manager at SaintGobain Insulation UK, outlines the advice merchants can offer their customers in terms of delivering performance in full fill cavity wall installations.
Mind the gap M
asonry cavity walls have been a common method of construction for many years. The aim of having two leaves of masonry separated by a clear cavity was to prevent the possibility of moisture coming from the outside to the inside of a building. Over time, this cavity became the location for thermal insulation to be installed to reduce heat loss from the building. Traditionally, rigid insulation boards were only used to partially fill the cavity ensuring that the clear air space was retained to prevent moisture ingress. However, with advances in manufacturing, rigid insulation boards could be used to fully fill the cavity with the aim to significantly reduce the requirement for the clear cavity.
26 PBM APRIL 2022
A true full fill cavity insulation board is typically thought of as one that is in contact with both leaves of the construction at the same time, although some products require a small cavity of up to 10mm to be maintained to deliver their performance. In addition to this, products often require the use of taping insulation boards together to maintain integrity of performance, generally resulting in installations taking longer or costing more to deliver the overall benefit. With a low thermal conductivity of 0.021 W/m.K and availability in a range of thicknesses, Celotex Thermaclass Cavity Wall 21 enables low U-values to be achieved ensuring high levels of thermal performance can be achieved whilst keeping overall wall widths to a minimum. The reflective facer of the boards gives an added low emissivity benefit to the overall thermal performance of the construction when used in conjunction with the 10mm air cavity. Unlike many products in this category, Celotex Thermaclass Cavity Wall 21 offers the benefit of being able to be used in both a true full fill installation or

with a 10mm residual cavity. This gives benefits to specifiers and designers such as design flexibility and choice of approach. And in certain applications the 10mm cavity may make it easier for builders to install or, where required, accommodate for mortar squeeze. Another significant benefit of Thermaclass Cavity Wall 21 is that is does not require board joints to be taped, saving both time and additional cost to the install. The tongue and groove edge profile helps to keep the boards in line and acts as the barrier to water ingress by preventing water from tracking between the board joints. Thermaclass Cavity Wall 21 has been tested and assessed by the BBA (a third party certification body) as fit for use in full fill masonry cavity wall applications when installed, used and maintained as set out in the certificate. As with all construction products, you and your customers need to satisfy yourselves that use of the product meets all relevant national Building Regulations and guidance as well as local, national and other applicable standards relevant to the construction or application, including requirements in relation to fire and applicable height restrictions.

Kevin Ellis, Grant UK’s Renewables Sales Manager, considers the implications of the Government’s plan to encourage the decarbonisation of heating systems and cautions that change is on the horizon — and everyone in the heating sector needs to understand what this means.
L
ast October, the Government’s Heat and Buildings Strategy placed significant emphasis on air source heat pumps to help the UK achieve its pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reach the target of Net Zero by 2050. It is well recognised that heating homes and other buildings produces a large proportion of emissions so if these greenhouse gas levels are to be reduced, our heating systems will need to change with less reliance on fossil fuels. At over two hundred pages in length, there is a lot of material to digest. One of the headlines is the proposed phasing out of high carbon fossil fuel heating with two key dates standing out — 2024 for the end of such installations in non-domestic buildings not connected to the gas grid, and 2026 in domestic buildings not connected to the gas grid. Air source heat pumps are one of the much-needed alternative solutions — so if you are not yet familiar with how this type of heating system works, now is the time to expand your knowledge. Electric heating is prominently positioned in the Heat and Buildings Strategy with air source and ground source heat pumps selected as the Government’s favoured technologies, with both systems eligible for grants in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (£5000 for air source heat pumps and £6000 for ground source heat pumps). By 2028, a target has been set for 600,000 heat pumps to be installed each year, a figure around twenty times greater than current installation levels. There is a challenge ahead to ensure installers are trained correctly and that consumers are educated in how to get the best out of their heat pump system. There is also huge opportunity for growth — and this is something merchants will be able to capitalise on. ■ To learn more about the implications of the Heat and Buildings Strategy as well as the changes to Parts L, F and O of the Building Regulations, we have a free on-demand course that summarises this for merchants — simply scan this QR code to visit the Grant eLearning Academy.

DRAINAGE & WATER MANAGEMENT
An increased focus on sustainability, both in terms of its product offering and its own business operations, is at the heart of ACO’s ongoing strategy as evidenced by its recently released Environmental Statement. PBM considers some of the latest developments.
Long-term commitment R
eportedly the first construction products manufacturer to be listed as a CO2nstructZero Business Champion by the Construction Leadership Council in 2021, ACO Technologies has now published an Environmental Statement — available to view via www.rdr.link/mag005 — to detail its business-wide sustainability commitments and set out its plans to achieve net zero carbon. A key factor in its endorsement by the CLC was the company’s 31% reduction in carbon emissions in the four years from 2015 to 2019. Having been accredited to ISO 14001 since 2009, the company says it can demonstrate improvements across all its activities and has now announced further commitments. This includes a continued focus on reducing its operational carbon emissions, verified by measuring CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) figures by a third party. Alongside verification, ACO has moved to a 100% renewable electricity tariff which enables the company to be Carbon Neutral for residual scope 1 and 2 emissions by using Gold Standard Carbon Offsets. To further reduce the carbon intensity of its operations, the business is also set to install ground source heat pumps across its UK site along with the introduction of electric forklift trucks and working with its logistics partners on the transition to HVO
fuels. Reducing waste and recycling initiatives are also high on ACO’s sustainability agenda as the company works toward a circular economy. Dr David Smoker, Technical Director at ACO Technologies, said: “As a manufacturer of building drainage and surface water management products, we must consider how we can protect and enhance the living and natural environment. As such, we remain committed to providing products and design support that will help facilitate the creation of integrated drainage solutions. “We have challenged ourselves to reduce our environment impact. This has been set out to cover both our manufacturing processes and how we design our products.”
Product focus The sustainability drive stretches across the group’s business units. For example, while a number of trends often focus on aesthetic
www.professionalbuildersmerchant.co.uk
appeal and colour schemes, ACO Water Management argues that sustainable design practices must be a top priority for 2022. Within the sector, the impact of climate change has led to the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) to set ambitious targets for its members to reduce carbon, chemical and peat-based products and it is also targeting water management practices — by 2025, the APL is looking to work with its members to deliver an aggregate 40% increase in the proportion of water that comes from non-mains and reused water sources, such as rainwater and runoff capture. As such, implementing sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) should be a key concern for those involved in designing and building gardens. ACO’s Oliver Collins said: “Climate change has meant that water management has moved from an ‘issue’ to an ‘asset’ in garden design. While it could lead to a new outlook in terms of garden design, it also opens up a number of opportunities, particularly as the public continues to reassess its relationship with outdoor spaces following the pandemic. “Protecting the environment is not only being led by governmental changes — customer demand is also hugely influential. Every house in the UK can have a role to

DRAINAGE & WATER MANAGEMENT
play to support the climate and understanding sustainable best practice is therefore going to grow in importance this year. By adopting SuDS solutions and retaining water on-site, we can ensure runoff rainwater does not fill public sewers.” ACO Building Drainage, meanwhile, used this year’s Futurebuild to showcase a blue roof attenuation system designed to “help increase building resilience and futureproof performance during increasing extreme weather conditions”. The system operates as an open attenuation tank that functions independently of the roof ’s waterproofing
and drainage system and allows for the controlled drainage of rainwater on all roof types. In exceedance conditions the roof can drain quickly as the system allows water to discharge by an internal overflow, as well as around the perimeter of the tank. As a result, the system meets planning conditions and Building Regulations without compromising roof waterproofing or overloading the roof structure. Additionally the system is compliant with Flat Roofing and Drainage building standards and the SuDS Manual hydraulic design guidance. Suitable for both new build and retrofit schemes, it can be constructed on any new or existing flat roof where roof waterproofing has been applied. It is also suitable when used as part of a combined passive irrigation or active rainwater harvesting system.
Kevin Bohea, Divisional Managing Director at ACO Building Drainage, said: “One of the challenges facing most blue roof systems is the extent to which they can mitigate the building risk involved in holding water on a roof for extended periods. “Conventional blue roofs come with increased risk of a water penetration which could cause long-term damage to the building structure. Our patented system removes this risk thanks to the separate attenuation tank, which essentially prevents the water encountering the waterproofing of the building during design events.”

DRAINAGE & WATER MANAGEMENT
Weathering the storm A specialist in water management systems, ADS is one of America’s largest manufacturers of corrugated thermoplastic drainage pipes and StormTech, its proprietary below-ground stormwater attenuation system, is now available in the UK with the company actively looking for approved stockists. Stuart Crisp, UK Manager, reveals more.
W
ith the United Nation’s Climate Change Conference (COP 26) taking placed in Glasgow late last year, the publication of the Royal Meteorological Society’s State of the Climate report a couple of months in advance was particularly timely. The report showed that Britain had become an average of 6% wetter over the 30 years from 1991 to 2020. Additionally, six of the 10 wettest years since 1862 have occurred since 1998. As Stuart Crisp, UK Manager of Advanced Drainage Systems (ADS) points out: “This significant increase in rainfall will not only challenge the UK’s drainage infrastructure, it could dramatically affect the management of our water quantity and quality. However, StormTech provides a durable solution for commercial, residential, industrial and infrastructure installations. “As part of an integrated SuDS system, StormTech helps provide valuable surface space for parking, playgrounds or other amenities, and has many benefits over alternatives such as geocellular crates, large diameter pipes and vaulted systems.” These benefits are said to have given StormTech a long and successful track record
34 PBM APRIL 2022
with over 40,000 installations worldwide, including the DC United stadium in Washington DC, numerous Lidl stores across the USA, and international projects such as St Petersburg and Guernsey airports. Stuart said: “One of StormTech’s biggest advantages is its design flexibility. The chambers are injection moulded to ensure consistent quality and performance. Even the colour and semi-elliptical shape are deliberate engineering choices. The chambers shape the embedment stone into structural arches forming load bearing columns. This makes StormTech more adaptable than other systems, as it’s the stone that transmits the majority of the load.” Another key benefit is that StormTech chambers lock together to form a continuous, unimpeded void that provides easy access for inspection and maintenance. The wide range of unit sizes is said to make it easy to optimise systems for all conditions, including shallow invert depths and reduced footprints. The system is also said to be highly adaptable and can be configured around obstacles and afford multiple inlet and outlet positions. Standard pipe manifolds, manholes, access chambers and flow controls can be used.
However, as Stuart suggests, one of the most important benefits concerns water quality: “StormTech incorporates Isolator Row — a patented, in-built water treatment device which removes silt, sediment and other surface water pollutants. Isolator Row has been independently tested by universities and respected industry bodies and proven to remove over 80% of total suspended solids and other water-borne pollutants including metals, hydrocarbons, phosphorus, and nitrogen. “Unlike other proprietary attenuation systems, Isolator Row provides a free water quality treatment device as an integral part of the stormwater attenuation system. This means that expensive pre-treatment installed upstream of the attenuation system can often be removed from the design.” Stuart concludes by saying: “We also take our environmental responsibilities seriously. StormTech affords low embodied carbon per cubic metre of attenuated water compared with alternative systems and is recyclable.” ■ To find out more about becoming a stockist, enter the shortcode www.rdr.link/mag007

Civil service Marsh Industries has launched a new specialist division, Marsh Civils, to focus on the company’s activities in industrial water/wastewater storage and treatment.

our high-quality manufacturing capabilities and flexible production capacity, means that we can help our customers and their teams deliver complete project confidence.” Designing and manufacturing a wide range of solutions from sewage treatment plants and cesspools to grease management systems and oil separators from its bases in Northamptonshire and Somerset, Marsh Industries products are fully type-tested and accredited including third party material integrity and fire testing. The company is a registered supplier on Achilles UVDB, a member of SpecifiedBy for Building Product Companies and a partner with NBS Source. Also recently announced by the off-mains drainage specialist is the launch of the Marsh GEM-APS (Aerated Precipitation System). The Gem-APS is said to reduce phosphates, ammonia and BOD levels to meet “the most stringent consent standards, providing surety for end-users and specifiers”. The aerated precipitation system treats effluent discharge in a controlled process involving small doses of chemical and oxygen that can then be discharged to a watercourse, ditch or drainage field. Tested to EN12566-7-Annex A for up to 50PE, the Gem-APS is a tertiary treatment plant that
can be installed at the outlet end of new or existing sewage treatment plants. Initial test results at the PIA-notified Test Centre, Aachen, were: • Phosphate 0.9mg/l • NH4-N 0.4mg/l • BOD 2.0mg/l MD Steve Boyer, who oversaw the testing procedures, said: “It is almost a given notion that our products have a positive effect on the environment, however over the past year we have received increasing demand from all sectors asking us for independently verified testing of our products that demonstrates their environmental impact. The Gem-APS provides end-users and specifiers additional confidence in our range of environmentally sensitive waste water solutions.” Gem-APS plants can be supplied in larger sizes (additional sizing was submitted as part of the EN12566-7 testing process) and can be regulated to reduce phosphate levels further if required. Marsh notes that it offers commissioning and servicing of the Gem-APS and “strongly advises” that this service is used when the unit is set up. ■ For further information on Marsh Industries’ range of products and services, including the new Marsh Civils division, enter the shortcode www.rdr.link/mag008

ALIAXIS PROTECTA-LINE 25TH ANNIVERSARY A complete pipework system approved to BS 8588 requirements and for use within contaminated land, Protecta-Line was first introduced to the market in 1997, when it was reportedly the first of its kind. Since then, Aliaxis says it has remained the “trusted system of choice” for water utilities, housebuilders, contractors and installers ever since. With brownfield land increasingly being redeveloped to make way for new housing and associated infrastructure, specific building products and solutions are required given the potential for high levels of contaminants in the ground. And to ensure the water supply network is unaffected and remains safe to drink, Protecta-Line offers external barrier protection to prevent any contaminants in the soil from permeating through the pipe wall, providing peace of mind for drinking water applications.
ALUMASC ONLINE CALCULATOR Alumasc Water Management Solutions has launched an upgraded version of its popular online drainage calculator, which measures and specifies the drainage requirements based on user defined rainfall events. The new calculator is described as an innovative digital platform encompassing four Alumasc brands — Rainwater, Harmer, Wade and Gatic — which allows users to design their entire rain-to-drain solutions across the building envelope from one place, making it much easier to use.

PLUMBING & HEATING
On report Published in late February, the latest Plumbing & Heating Merchant Index (PHMI) report reveals that a “steady” final quarter ensured that sales through specialist Plumbing & Heating merchants continued on their upward trend.
D
espite there being four fewer trading days in Q4 2021, the most recent PHMI data shows that absolute sales increased by +6.4% against Q3 2021. An increase of +13.5% in Q4 is shown when comparing like-for-like sales, adjusted for the difference in trading days between the two quarters. Year on year comparisons also show a slight upward trend, with sales in Q4 2021 up by +2.0% on Q4 2020, when there was no difference in trading days. When compared to the same period (October to December) in 2019, Q4 2021 recorded nominal growth, with value sales up 1.6% helped by two more trading days this year. Like-for-like sales were flat (-0.1%). Thanks to another steady quarter, Plumbing & Heating Merchants’ sales for the full year 2021 were 18.3% higher than in Covid-affected January to December 2020, with two less trading days this year. Adjusting for that difference, like-for-like sales increased by +19.3% in 2021 vs 2020. Annual sales were also higher than in 2019, with 2021 recording an absolute increase of +2.7%. December 2021 was just 0.3% higher than December 2020 with an equal number of trading days. December 2021 compared more favourably to the same month in 2019 (+4.6%), helped by two extra trading days. Like-for-like sales were 7.7% lower. Considering the findings of the report and speaking about the broader concerns of
the sector, Bill Davies, Sales Director at James Hargreaves, said: “We saw record sales in 2021, 24.5% up against 2020, and there are still plenty of reasons to feel optimistic for the current year. However, there are already clear signs that the effect of price increases within the plumbing/heating market are making things more challenging.
Bill Davies, Sales Director at James Hargreaves
“We have seen record percentage price increases from numerous suppliers, some applying more than one, and surcharges that now seem to have become unofficial price increases. Couple these increases with the pressure of the general cost of living and it could lead to homeowners delaying projects. “To offset these price increases we are already seeing some customers looking for lesser branded products — searching for that price advantage.” He added: “So while the market remains buoyant, the pressure on pricing and
www.professionalbuildersmerchant.co.uk
margins is the biggest challenge for 2022. It could be a tough year, but one that could still prove rewarding. Positivity and hard work very much among the key elements needed.” Mike Rigby, CEO of MRA Research which produces the report, commented: “Quarter four PHMI figures for the market show that sales through specialist plumbing and heating merchants have continued to show momentum. “As we move into 2022, demand from homeowners for more efficient heating and hot water systems to counteract rocketing energy costs will undoubtedly drive sales, although the squeeze on household budgets may reduce the appetite for other home improvement projects. A buoyant housebuilding forecast for 2022 though will surely keep merchants busy while the repair, maintenance and improvement picture becomes clearer.” A brand of the BMF, the PHMI data comes from GfK’s Plumbing & Heating Merchant Panel which is said to represent over 80% of Britain’s specialist plumbing & heating merchants’ sales and includes names such as City Plumbing, Graham, James Hargreaves, PTS and Wolseley. There is no overlap or double counting between PHMI and Builders Merchants Building Index (BMBI) sales data. ■ To download the latest PHMI report, enter the shortcode www.rdr.link/mag014

PLUMBING & HEATING
The next steps As the UK continues its pathway towards Net Zero, what is believed to be a world-first smart hydrogen hybrid heating system has been unveiled in Pembrokeshire. PBM reports.
A
ccording to The Energy Saving Trust, emissions from home heating and hot water need to be cut by 95% to meet 2050 UK Net Zero targets, and hybrid heating technology will become increasingly important both for commercial and domestic customers. Combining a hydrogen-fuelled boiler with an electric air-source heat pump alongside smart control technology, the pioneering trial it was conducted in a commercial building at the Port of Milford Haven, reportedly the UK’s largest energy Port. Part of the UK Research and Innovation-funded Milford Haven: Energy Kingdom project, the installation was successfully implemented by a collaboration of partners including the Port of Milford Haven, Passiv UK, Wales & West Utilities, Kiwa UK, Worcester Bosch, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, and Pembrokeshire County Council. Hybrid heating systems such as this can flexibly switch between using renewable electricity when it’s available, and green gases like hydrogen at other times. For many existing homes and businesses, hybrid heating systems offer an affordable and practical way to decarbonise heating — not least as research suggests that almost 50% of UK properties are not suitable for standalone
40 PBM APRIL 2022
heat pumps due to their poor thermal properties and other limitations. For example, many of the UK’s aged housing stock would need disruptive and expensive energy efficiency improvements such as wall and floor insulation and new radiators to be effectively heated by a standalone heat pump system. Accordingly, hybrid heating systems can be a cheaper, and less disruptive alternative that can be fitted as a quick and direct replacement to a typical boiler system. In this demonstration, Kiwa UK delivered bottled hydrogen to the Worcester Bosch boiler — developed during the last three years as part of the BEIS-funded Hy4Heat project — to simulate periods when renewable electricity was unavailable to run the heat pump, or when a temperature boost was required. The smart controls were designed by Passiv UK and “integrated with the system seamlessly”, automatically switching between the air source heat pump and the hydrogen boiler. Every two minutes the system assesses GB energy generation mix and renewable electricity availability on the local grid, and requests the boiler to run on hydrogen when unavailable. Wales & West Utilities, the gas network for Wales and south west England, is one of
the project partners. Matt Hindle, Head of Net Zero and Sustainability, said: “We’re committed to playing our part in helping communities across Wales and south west England go green. Between 2021 and 2026 we’re investing £400m to prepare our network to transport green gas like hydrogen and biomethane. “Hybrid heating systems can be easily retrofitted to existing housing stock, without costly changes to radiators or internal pipework, keeping disruption to homes and communities to a minimum. This trial has demonstrated how they can work with hydrogen in place of natural gas.” He added: “The UK Government’s Heat and Buildings Strategy acknowledged that hybrids could play a transitional role in the 2020s and 2030s but contained no targets for their manufacture or installation. The 2020s must be a decade of delivery for Net Zero and we’d urge Government and policymakers to include hybrids in incentives and support schemes like the Clean Heat Grant, encouraging installations of hybrids to help towards achieving the 600,000 heat pumps per year target, alongside ongoing support to develop hydrogen for heating.” ■ For more information, enter the shortcode www.rdr.link/mag015

PLUMBING & HEATING
2022 sees the fifth anniversary of PipeSnug, designed as a “quick and straightforward solution for making good around pipework”. To mark the occasion, PBM spoke with creators Chris Burdett and Alex Lever to discover how the product came about and how it has grown over the years.
Fixing a hole Q
How did you first get the idea for PipeSnug? Chris: The PipeSnug concept came to me out on site one day when I was preparing to mortar around a waste pipe for what seemed like the millionth time. I realised a simple fitting would save so much time in mixing mortar or siliconing around the pipe, as well as blending into the fabric of the building visually. Alex: I knew Chris through the school our children went to. I have launched several
businesses before and when Chris told me about PipeSnug I loved the idea, we became business partners and that is when we began to move forward and bring the product to market. Chris: As a tradesperson I wanted to solve a problem for those in the construction industry. We estimated that an average plumber who is fitting around five bathrooms a month could save around £150 by using PipeSnug. A heating engineer or company doing 15 to 20 boilers a month could save up
www.professionalbuildersmerchant.co.uk
to £800 per month in reduced labour cost and materials too. With that, we went for it.
Q
How long did it take to develop the product? Alex: It took around 12 to 18 months before we were ready for launch, and in that time we were refining the design, testing prototypes and finding the right suppliers to work with. One of the major hurdles was to get the product patented, which is a long process — but we got there!
PBM APRIL 2022 43

PLUMBING & HEATING
Q
What are the main situations in which PipeSnug can be used? Chris: The products are designed so that any plumber or builder can use it to seal the hole where a pipe exits a wall. PipeSnug replaces messy mortar, silicone, tape and expanding foam. It is quicker to install, cheaper, neater and cleaner than pointing mortar, silicone or expanding foam. It fits in seconds. Alex: Like PipeSnug, FlueSnug also removes any need for pointing, can be installed in seconds and snugly fits the 152mm core-drilled hole in the wall through which the boiler flue exits. PipeSnug and FlueSnug prevent heat escaping, act as a barrier to drafts, damp, insects and pests and give a great, neat finish as they can be both be used both inside and outside the property. Chris: You can also install FlueSnug from the inside of the wall to the outside as it is flexible enough to be folded through the core drilled hole. That means you can also save money on scaffolding and remove a health and safety risk if the boiler is being installed at height.
Q
Launching a new product is always tricky, how did you get the word out to the plumbing and heating community? Alex: Firstly, we were keen to create a strong, easily recognisable brand. The reaction from the industry was really receptive and we launched PipeSnug through the trade press.
44 PBM APRIL 2022
Chris: We also exhibited at trade shows, worked with influencers and pushed PipeSnug on social media. We secured merchant distribution and all of this work, plus word of mouth led to some really big successes for us. Local Authorities began to use PipeSnug on their housing stock and when we launched FlueSnug, which seals around flues, it was used by major housebuilders to ensure an airtight seal to maintain energy efficient levels. Alex: A big moment was when FlueSnug was endorsed by the major boiler manufacturers, including Worcester Bosch and Ideal Heating.
Q
Do recent changes to the Building Regulations mean more properties will be fitted with PipeSnug? Chris: Yes, in December 2021 the Part L of the Building Regulations were changed and it now requires pipe seals and grommets to be used around pipework. PipeSnug is the only all-in-one solution which meets Part L’s requirement to seal around pipework inside and out, without the need for sealant, mortar or expensive air sealing tape. Alex: The changes to Part L were designed to help the UK meet its Net Zero targets. PipeSnug and FlueSnug form an airtight seal against the wall where pipes enter and exit a building so they not only save plumbers time, money and mess, but they also keep warmth in and energy costs down for homeowners.
Chris: They look great too! With PipeSnug you know you can meet the Regs easily, and it saves so much time and therefore money for plumbing and heating contractors too. Job done!
Q
What options are currently available? Alex: PipeSnug is available in 32mm and 40mm for solvent-weld waste pipes and fit a 52mm core drilled hole. The 110mm version fits a 152mm core drilled hole and fits all push-fit and solvent weld soil pipe fittings. The soil and waste versions are available in black, white and grey. Chris: FlueSnug works for all 100mm boiler flues and fits a 152mm core drilled hole. It is available in black and white.
Q
Finally, what are your plans for the next five years? Alex: We have ambitious plans to invest and launch new versions to cover different sizes and applications in the coming months as demand rises due to the changes to Part L. We want PipeSnug to become the de facto method of sealing around service penetrations. We are also looking to expand sales more outside the UK as we have international patents. Chris: Yes, it’s an exciting time and we have other products we are working on, all of which are focused on solving problems in the construction and plumbing sector. ■ For more information, enter the shortcode www.rdr.link/mag016

PLUMBING & HEATING
Pressed for time
W
ith the home improvement boom predicted to continue this year, there’s no sign of the workload slowing for tradespeople. Plumbers and installers are now facing a packed calendar in a very demanding market. However, by investing more in solutions which are designed to help ease the pressures, they’ll be able to get their jobs done much quicker, and protect their margins.
You’ve probably seen first-hand how attached trades can become to their tools and processes — with many taking an ‘if it aint broke, don’t fix it’ approach. Encouraging them to try something different, which will ultimately make their lives easier, can be tricky. So, that’s why being able to talk knowledgably to your customers about the advantages of newer products on the market can really add value. Take press-fit products, for example. These are able to offer a host of benefits for plumbers, but might not be the first port of call for traditionalists. So, what should you be telling your time-poor customers about when it comes to press-fit products? What is press-fit? Unlike traditional plumbing systems which require hot works to connect pipes together, press-fit products don’t need heat. The installation process makes water-tight joints by inserting the pipe and fitting together, and then uses either a hand-operated or an electrical press-fitting tool to form the connection.
46 PBM APRIL 2022
Joana Janusevicute, Territory Product Manager at Wavin, takes a look at how press-fit systems can be the perfect solution for busy plumbers and shares her thoughts on how merchants can sell more of them to their customers. These innovative products were originally developed for commercial use, but they’re increasingly being used in domestic settings, because of the recognised benefits. Efficient and safe With tighter timeframes across the sector, on-site efficiency is becoming increasingly important. Your plumbing customers need to have access to solutions that can help cut their installation times, while still ensuring the end result will be fit and forget. This is where press-fit’s quicker installation processes come in — a benefit that has a ripple effect throughout an entire build, no matter if it’s a new housing development or a brand-new family bathroom. Straightaway, the most time-consuming stage of traditional installation is removed with press-fit. So no more, threading, soldering or welding, and these products ensure your customers can create a completely secure fit in almost no time at all. As no hot works are needed, this also means other people can be present whilst the
www.professionalbuildersmerchant.co.uk
046_PBM_APR22_Layout 1 16/03/2022 13:47 Page 47
installation is taking place. As the safety risks have been mitigated, with no flying sparks or solvent fumes, other tradespeople can continue with their work, helping to keep projects on track. As installation uses components assembled with dry joints, components can be pre-fabricated off-site before installation, which helps to cut down time even further. Durable and flexible Not only are press-fit systems more efficient, their flexibility also reduces the amount of fixings required to hold plumbing in place, allowing pipework to be easily installed within walls and other areas with restricted space like airing cupboards and under stairwells. This benefits installers, developers and end-users, as it means homes can be designed with aesthetics in mind — giving people as much useable space as possible, without compromising on the overall design or the performance of the plumbing system. One solution that offers a more flexible fitout and durable end result, are the award-winning Tigris systems from Wavin. These press-fit pipes are compatible with virtually any existing systems, and are made using composite material which means that there’s no contact between metal and water when in use, which helps resist scale and corrosion. Meanwhile, its high-performance Polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) fittings with fixed stainless-steel sleeves don’t expand or contract as much as traditional alternatives when the heating is on, minimising the stress placed on the system. Both of these features help to reduce maintenance requirements, and ensure that systems will have a long and productive life, no matter where they’re installed. By talking to your customers about the benefits of press-fit products, you can offer them advice and solutions that take the pressure off at a time when they’re under more than ever. ■ To find out more about Wavin’s Tigris systems, enter the shortcode www.rdr.link/mag017

HEATING AND HOTWATER INDUSTRY COUNCIL HYDROGEN LABELLING With progress being made towards decarbonising domestic use of gas, using hydrogen, the HHIC membership of appliance manufacturers has agreed new, clear labelling for hydrogen appliances which “will very clearly” show three distinct categories of hydrogen appliances: • Hydrogen Blend compatible — capable of running on a blend of up to 20% hydrogen in the gas network. • Hydrogen-Ready appliances — capable of running on a 20% blend but with the scope to be converted by a Gas Safe engineer to run on a 100% hydrogen gas network. • 100% Hydrogen boiler — an appliance built specifically to run on hydrogen without the need for conversion. Stewart Clements, Director of HHIC, said: “These labels bring clarity to consumers and installers. As we go on the journey towards decarbonising the gas networks, industry needs to be absolutely transparent on what appliances can and can’t do.” ■ For more on the concept, go to www.rdr.link/mag019
SALAMANDER PUMPS TAPBOOST A trickling tap is a nuisance, but when only one tap or outlet is poor, installing a pump to improve the water flow throughout the whole house can feel like overkill. To combat this, Salamander has launched TapBoost to offer a “cost-effective solution to boost the performance of a single tap or outlet”. Designed to add up to 6 litres of additional flow, the pump is said to be incredibly quiet whilst its inline design with robust brass fittings means it can be easily installed in either a mains-fed or a gravity-fed system at multiple locations around the house. ■ Use www.rdr.link/mag020 to find out more.

GARDENS & LANDSCAPING
Deck and call With investment in outdoor renovation projects increasing and showing no sign of slowing down, Steve Ball, Technical Services Manager introduces Allur — the newest composite decking brand for the UK market.
T
here’s no denying the increase in spend on home and garden renovations since the start of the pandemic as homeowners found the time, and financial means, to invest in their homes as a place of safety and enjoyment. According to the 2021 UK Houzz & Home Renovation Trends Study, spend on outdoor areas saw a 13-percentage point increase (to 60%) in 2020 with upgrades to decking areas increasing by 16%. This trend continued throughout 2021 as consumers upgraded their living spaces in the absence of holidays and social events — and despite the lifting of restrictions, the upcoming gardening season looks set to be another busy one. Indeed, there is significant sales potential for composite decking which has seen its market value grow by 7% since 2019. From a standing start, it now accounts for 25% of the overall decking market and it continues to take market share from its timber counterpart as homeowners seek products that offer longevity, low maintenance and green credentials.
Allur has been thoughtfully created to target the market sweet spot for merchants who want premium design and quality, at a price point that offers attractive margin opportunities. Supported by the strapline ‘Desire the happy outdoors’, Allur caters for customers who want a brand they can trust to deliver long-lasting style, while also being considerate of the environment due to its high recycled content. of mind of an industry leading 25-year warranty and aftercare service. It also boasts a host of industry accreditations and certifications including BS EN 15534-1:2014 and slip and fire resistance. Design led While grey remains the mainstay of interior design, green is fast growing in popularity among consumers due to its ability to provide a calming connection with nature. Allur is first to market with a fashionable Sage green deck board, which compliments the soft green shades now emerging in window frames and bi-fold doors. The range also includes three grey shades of Charcoal, Gunmetal and Silver Grey, as well as Graphite, Caramel and Chocolate. In addition, the boards have a double-sided finish featuring a contemporary grooved side and a more traditional woodgrain side, giving the scope for mix and matching. Furthermore, opinion polls and statistics show that consumers are ever more conscious of their impact on the
environment and have a greater desire to buy products that are kinder to the planet. Allur has excellent green credentials with each 3.6m board containing 75 recycled plastic bottles — the equivalent of 3kg of recycled

GARDENS & LANDSCAPING
Postal service Galvanised steel fence post systems can provide a durable and attractive alternative to the more traditional material choices. John Abernethie, Managing Director at Birkdale, explains why he feels such systems are an ideal option for merchants to recommend to their customers.
W
hen it comes to selecting a fence post material, there are a number of different options available, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. However, there are three main factors to consider when choosing a final product — strength, durability and aesthetics. Concrete is one option that has proven to be very popular, largely due to its strength and weather resistance. However, concrete does fall short in other areas. Prone to chipping and hairline cracks, this can lead to water ingress, which in turn causes further damage to the post before it eventually snaps. In addition, concrete posts are often rejected as a result of their aesthetic value; their bulkiness and colour can disrupt the look of an outdoor space. Furthermore, concrete is an incredibly heavy material, meaning that the installation process is time consuming and requires multiple tradespeople, negatively impacting on the cost of the job. Similarly, the space inefficiency and weight of concrete also impacts merchants, as it means that less concrete posts can be stocked compared with more modern lightweight systems. Timber has of course remained a prominent material within the UK fencing market due to its natural and popular aesthetic. However, timber is unable to deliver when it comes to strength and durability. It has a tendency to rot at the
54 PBM APRIL 2022
base, causing the rest of the structure to weaken and eventually fail. As a result, untreated timber fence post systems need to be replaced every 5-10 years. However, merchants should be aware that high performance alternatives such as galvanised steel have entered the market and present a number of advantages over concrete and timber systems. First of all, galvanised steel is a more durable option — it will not rot, warp, or twist over time, regardless of conditions. The durability of the material also ensures that no maintenance is required, meaning it is very cost-effective in the long run. Another crucial advantage is that galvanised steel is 80% lighter than concrete. This allows it to be easily transported to site, carried and installed by a single tradesperson. As a result, making the switch can reduce both transport and labour costs
“Merchants should be aware that high performance alternatives such as galvanised steel have entered the market and present a number of advantages over concrete and timber systems.”
on projects. Galvanised steel fence posts can also save the tradesperson time on site allowing them to move on to their next job faster, helping to make a really positive contribution to their overall profitability. Although a lighter alternative, galvanised steel is still able to match concrete for strength. This was demonstrated when the Building Research Establishment (BRE) strength tested Birkdale’s DuraPost system and it was proven to withstand wind speeds of up to 110 mph — the equivalent of 625kg of force. This is particularly relevant considering the violent and damaging storms that have recently occurred across the UK. The strength of DuraPost is due to it being cut and rolled through a specially made die to create a unique, patented H-section profile. Not only does this provide the system with a great deal of strength and durability, but it also means that the posts come in slimmer profiles that are less intrusive on existing garden aesthetics and can complement any garden design. Furthermore, the space efficiency of the DuraPost system also ensures that it can be stocked easily and in larger quantities than alternatives. This helps merchants to hold more stock, yet still increase space in the yard for other items. Galvanised steel post systems are available in a variety of different colour options, including the popular Anthracite
www.professionalbuildersmerchant.co.uk
054_PBM_APR22_Layout 1 16/03/2022 14:03 Page 55
Grey, Olive Grey and Sepia Brown. Untreated galvanised steel posts are also available, providing a strong, long-lasting product that is ideal for use alongside pre-existing concrete and in commercial environments, and at a highly competitive price point to traditional concrete systems.
In addition, environmental considerations are increasingly important too and galvanised steel has major selling points over the alternatives. Indeed, concrete has been labelled “the most destructive material on earth” and contributes 4-8% of the world’s CO2. The good news for
customers looking for more environmentally friendly options is that Birkdale’s DuraPost is made from 50% recycled steel and is 100% recyclable at the end of its working lifespan. Overall, galvanised steel fence posts are a modern alternative that offer merchants and their customers a multitude of benefits when compared to traditional options. To ensure your customers do benefit from all the advantages galvanised steel fence posts can provide, they should be of a high quality and sourced from a recognised manufacturer. Established in 1982, Birkdale is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of fencing and gate accessories, and supports its DuraPost galvanised steel fence post system with a guarantee of up to 25 years. The company also supplies a variety of supporting accessories such as colour-matched gravel boards and post caps. ■ For more information on DuraPost, enter the shortcode www.rdr.link/mag024

GARDENS & LANDSCAPING
Staying out for the summer The boom in the landscaping sector looks set to continue as people still want to use outdoor areas as an extra place to entertain and relax. Whether a customer wants to create an inspiring outdoor space for the new season or bring an unloved and neglected garden back to life with a bit of TLC, getting the products right makes the job a walk in the park. Mariam Maqsood, Product Manager from Sika Everbuild explains how to guide your customers through the range of patio adhesives, sealers and cleaning products to suit their exact project requirements.
O
ne of the key trends shaping the landscaping sector at the moment is the idea of the garden as another room. Here, the use of porcelain tiles rather than traditional paving stones continues to be a popular means of lifting the space from being a patio to a comfortable and stylish outdoor living or dining room. This trend is all about ‘bringing the inside out’ to make the garden feel connected to the interior, as well as creating an additional socialising space outside. It is particularly effective where bifold doors are also installed and tiles which complement the indoor flooring are
used, providing an excellent way to create cohesion between the two areas. And so when your customers are installing porcelain tiles for a garden patio, it is vital they opt for exterior grade jointing compounds and adhesives to ensure the tiles will withstand all the elements including UV rays, heat, frost and rain as well as standing water. A strong bonding primer — such as the SikaCeram FlowFix bonding primer and jointing compound system — is essential to prevent the paving system breaking away from the mortar bed, and is typically applied by brush or roller to the underside of the paving during installation.
www.professionalbuildersmerchant.co.uk
It’s also worth bearing in mind that jointing compounds will be visible between tiles, so colour is also a factor. Manufacturers like Sika Everbuild offer a range of colours — with SikaCeram FlowFix available in Light Grey, Dark Grey, Buff and Ivory — to give customers the choice of coordinating or contrasting with their chosen tiles. Set in stone Of course, while porcelain tiles are a key trend, there is still an appetite for traditional stone patios. And though your customers may prefer to wait for perfectly dry conditions before they start a new patio installation,

GARDENS & LANDSCAPING
there are products available which can be applied in less-than-ideal conditions so there’s no need to wait until spring has sprung. As the name suggests, Sika Fastfix All Weather self-setting paving jointing compound is one of these hardy products which can be easily applied in all weather conditions, including rain. With its Active Resin Technology formula, it is hard-wearing, durable and won’t shrink or crack over time. And as it’s now available in a choice of five colour options — Stone, Flint, Charcoal, Dark Buff and Deep Grey — it can match many stone finishes from slate to sandstone. Jointing compounds like this also act as a natural barrier to prevent unsightly weed growth, helping to create low-maintenance patio areas. With customers increasingly concerned about the sustainability of the products they use, it’s helpful to be able to signpost them to more sustainable options available. For example, the fact that Sika FastFix can be stored in water once opened and reused on future projects reduces waste. The product also now sports new packaging which is manufactured using a minimum of 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic — a change which Sika anticipates will save
more than 400 tonnes of virgin plastic this year alone — demonstrating how small changes really do add up. Revitalising unloved patios Sometimes a good clean is all a patio needs to restore it back to its former glory, making a garden inviting and somewhere people want to spend time in. Pressure washing removes a lot of dirt and algae from paving and patios but can be back-breaking work. Thankfully there are plenty of products formulated to take the strain out of patio cleaning and leave them gleaming. For instance, Sika Mould Buster and Everbuild Patio Wizard can both be applied and then left to get to work on their own. Within a few days they will kill and remove mould and algae and help to prevent re-growth. Once thoroughly cleaned, a quick check of the integrity of the joints will show whether fresh jointing compound will need to be applied to prevent patio flags coming loose.
It’s also worth investing time to protect porous natural stone from stains. If customers are keen to retain the natural aesthetic of the stone, then a product like Sika Stone Protector with its invisible finish will provide stain resistance without changing the appearance of the stone. Other patio sealers are formulated to protect natural stone, concrete and block paving from the effects of sunlight, water, oil, petrol and fungal/moss growth to keep areas looking pristine through the seasons. Point of sale material is available for merchants to use and there is a host of resources on the Sika Everbuild website, including a handy ‘how to’ application video and a coverage calculator to help work out quantities needed for specific projects. ■ To find out more about Sika Everbuild’s extensive range of products and support services for merchants, enter the shortcode www.rdr.link/mag025

GARDENS & LANDSCAPING LONG RAKE SPAR INCREASED PRODUCTION Long Rake Spar has recently completed the first of three phases of works, installing new washing and bagging facilities into its latest site at Garston Docks, Liverpool. This strategically placed location now produces finished aggregates for the supplier’s Natural Selection brand, and the facilities have been designed and constructed to include an additional sixteen external storage bays and the building of a new 20,000 ft2 warehouse. The addition of the site at Garston allows for an additional 60,000 tonnes of decorative aggregates to be processed per annum, contributing to an increased stock holding across the group to in excess of £5million and enabling the company to react quickly and dynamically to demand for products. Indeed, the ability to be fully in control of the supply chain is deemed a fundamental part of the firm’s longterm strategy which it says has put the business “significantly ahead of many competitors” in terms of stock holding and its ability to supply. ■ For further information about the full

BOND IT GEO-FIX DISTRIBUTION Bond It has announced it has acquired the sole distribution rights for the Geo-Fix All Weather and Geo-Fix Original Paving Jointing Compounds. The pioneering Geo-Fix Original was first brought to market 25 years ago “when the paving industry was a completely different landscape compared to today”, with traditional cementitious jointing products said to be causing huge problems for Local Authorities and contractors. Having listened to the needs of the paving industry, the brand developed a new technology using sand polymers to create Geo-Fix Original brush-in jointing compound. In 2013, the range was enhanced to include Geo-Fix All Weather jointing compound — described as “a superior brush-in sand that can be used in all weathers” and which now offers a selection of colours to complement all designs and tastes. On the new distribution arrangement, Geo-Fix Director John Andrews said: “We are delighted to be working with Bond It to distribute the GeoFix range. The team are committed to providing exceptional products and service and I am confident together we will produce even greater opportunities for our customers.” Bond It MD Dean Morgan added: “Geo-Fix jointing compounds are recognised brand leaders and will be a perfect fit alongside our extensive Drive Alive range of products. In addition, we are committed to ensure a seamless transition and service for all customers, both existing and new, and feel this is a huge opportunity for Bond It to penetrate into new markets.” ■ To discover more, enter the shortcode www.rdr.link/mag027
POSTSAVER PRE-SLEEVED POSTS Ground line rot and decay in the upper 150mm (or 6 inches) of the ground is the number one cause of timber post failure. Postsaver Post Rot Protectors feature a dual-layer rot shield technology that when heated, shrinks onto the post creating a long lasting, high-performance, air and water-tight seal. This ensures the post protector excludes all the factors required for decay. By locking preservatives in and locking moisture, oxygen and fungi out, this prevents costly ground-line rot in wooden posts As a result of customer demand, Postsaver has launched a new range of fence posts with pre-applied Postsaver post protectors, saving contractors time and money with ready-to-use protected posts. The guaranteed 20-year long life posts have gone through a tanalised UC4 treatment process, and then fitted with the rot protector for a 2ft burial depth. Application of the post protector is done via a state-of-the-art Pro-mill machine which can process up to 400 posts per hour, ensuring each post is fitted correctly with the dual layer rot prevention technology. These new premium, pre-sleeved posts can be ordered in a range of shapes, sizes, and lengths with the added benefit of having them delivered directly to site. ■ Enter www.rdr.link/mag028 into your browser for

LIVING THE DREAM
THE MIGHTY DUCKS
As we reported last month, Brazilian superstar Roberto Carlos was set to make an implausible appearance for Shrewsbury & District Sunday League side Bull in Barne FC thanks to the pub team securing his services via ebay’s ‘Dream Transfer’ raffle — part of the ecommerce giant’s Football Beyond Borders charity campaign. Well, we can now tell you that a second half Carlos penalty was not enough to prevent the Bull losing 4-3 in a friendly against Harlescott Rangers. That two Sunday League outfits came together on a Friday morning was probably the least surreal aspect of the day, which saw the former World Cup and three-time Champions League winner start on the bench as TV crews and media from around the world descended on the Hanwood village recreation ground. The legendary left back, now 48, was said to be carrying a knock and only able to show a few glimpses of magic on an increasingly muddy playing surface, and whilst the Bull may have lost the match itself, Carlos certainly won the hearts and minds of the locals and his new teammates. As reported by the BBC, player-manager Ed Speller — who bought the winning ticket — said: “It’s been amazing, the whole experience from start to finish. Any touch he had, every pass was directly to someone and on this pitch, that’s not easy. He’s just a class player.” And a class bloke off the pitch as well it seems, happily posing for pictures with local school kids, signing shirts and, in true Sunday League fashion, going back to the pub after the match! For three hours! The Shropshire Star has the best detail, quoting striker Matt ‘Chicken’ Brown: “We were just chatting and one of the lads, because there’s a Ronaldinho shirt in the bar, said ‘you reckon you could get him on FaceTime?’ He said ‘no, but I will try Sergio…’” What happened next was captured on video and is well worth a quick look via @ShropshireStar on Twitter!
In the lead in to a major international tournament, it’s good to have a few warmup games against some tough opposition, right? Maybe that team that didn’t quite make it out of a tricky qualifying group, or a side that adopts the same tactics as one you’ll meet in the opening round? Well, how about preparing against a team of postmen, teachers and taxi drivers, weeks after they last played and with some of them cutting short their own summer holidays… For reasons that no-one seems to be entirely clear on, this is exactly what happened ahead of the 1988 European Championships when a full-strength England took to the field against Aylesbury United in what appears to be, unsurprisingly, the only time the Three Lions have played an English non-league side. Aylesbury were no mugs, having finished the season as Southern League Champions and in the middle of a period when they enjoyed a number of successful FA Cup runs, and perhaps it was viewed as little more than a glorified training session against a side based relatively near England’s Bisham Abbey training base but surely the time of Gary Lineker, Peter Beardsley et al could have been better spent? Maybe, with England running rings around their amateur opponents and winning 7-0, it was intended to serve as a confidence booster for the national team. Yet the disastrous campaign that followed in West Germany suggests a rather less than triumphant experiment. Speaking to the BBC recently, legendary Ducks striker Cliff Hercules — who racked up 301 goals in 669 appearances for the club — recalled how he flew back from holiday in Ibiza. He said: “We couldn’t get near them! When I think back it’s surreal. England coming to Aylesbury? It just wouldn’t happen now.”

2022 Top 20: PBM outlines the details behind the performance of the UK merchant sector’s largest businesses during 2021. A dramatic recovery from the worst ravages of the pandemic is starkly highlighted by the universal increase in turnover (and profit margins) presented by the sector’s largest merchant firms, as sustained customer demand kept the tills ringing despite the ongoing challenges of Covid, supply chain issues and material price rises. However, perhaps the biggest headline news remains the seismic shake-up caused by an array of mergers and acquisitions over the last twelve months. Indeed, the ‘realignment’ of the market has continued in the early months of 2022 (and therefore outside of our reporting period) with the confirmation, for example, of Saint-Gobain Building Distribution UK’s sale of its remaining specialist plumbing & heating businesses Neville Lumb, DHS, Bassetts and Ideal Bathrooms to Wolseley UK. Looking back to the 2021 performances of our market leaders, Travis Perkins plc continues to lead the way. Indicative of the changes hinted at above, the business confirmed the demerger of Wickes in April and completed the sale of its Plumbing & Heating business to the Highbourne Group in May. As its new, strategic direction takes hold, the Group reported like-for-like revenue growth of 25.4% (14.4% ahead of 2019 for continuing operations) driven by an “enhanced customer proposition and robust recovery in key market segments.” Once again, the figures we share include those for Toolstation.
Saint-Gobain Building Distribution UK maintains second place, with the business fully focused on its builders’ merchant brands such as Jewson and Gibbs & Dandy moving forward. In third, Wolseley UK’s sale from Ferguson plc to private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice was completed in January 2021. In addition to the business listed previously, the company also acquired around 30 Graham branches from SGBD, with the transaction completed in September. Our first ‘new entry’ is the aforementioned Highbourne Group, now home of the former TP P&H brands such as City Plumbing. Four new branches were opened in 2021, along with the rebranding of five PTS depots. Big plans are said to be in place for 2022, with 25 new sites set to be opened. It was a “transformational year” for the Grafton Group, with the fifth-placed business presenting figures for its continuing operations following the sale of its ‘Traditional Merchanting’ business in Great Britain to Huws Gray. Three new Selco depots opened last year, taking the total to 72 and maintaining progress towards a stated target of 100 by 2026. Similarly, MKM continued its successful strategy for growth, with a host of new sites opened in 2021 and plans in place for an additional 15-20 locations in 2022. Around 73 Graham branches along with its ecommerce site were sold to UK Plumbing Supplies last year, but where do we even start to summarise the
activity at the Independent Builders Merchants Group? CRS, Build it, Total Plumbing Supplies, RGB and Devondale Electrical were added in early 2021 whilst during the summer, Grant & Stone merged with Parkers, Chandlers, Fairalls and Stamco to create an enlarged IBMG “spanning Kent to Cornwall”. Three more businesses were acquired in October. Appearing in 9th place this year, Huws Gray will certainly be much higher up the rankings in 12 months following the purchase of Buildbase, PDM Buildbase in Scotland and Civils & Lintels et al from Grafton. The c. £520m transaction completed on 31st December and effectively doubles Huws Gray in size — and a combined turnover in excess of £1bn would have secured 4th spot this time around… Completing our ‘Top 10’, Lords Group Trading “remains committed to sustainable growth through a combination of organic and acquisitive growth”. In July, the business completed a successful and oversubscribed IPO for admission to the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange. We are extremely grateful for the support of the sector in compiling this industry barometer. More details on each of our submissions for the full ‘Top 20’ (and those who narrowly missed the cut…) will be available on our website: www.professionalbuildersmerchant.co.uk
