VIEWPOINT

Coping with a crisis

I

n what can only be described as a truly unprecedented year, it has been fascinating to receive the responses from the businesses that make up the sector’s ‘Top 20 merchants’ and feature in the issue’s centre-page pull-out supplement. With the listing based on turnover figures, focusing purely on the numbers reveals a curiously mixed picture as to how these leading players managed through a year dominated by the Covid-19 pandemic — with trading significantly disrupted for all, those seeing turnover rise and those seeing it fall actually balance out with ten up, and ten down. Dig a little deeper, and this disparity can in part be explained as the consequence of all the factors one would see in a ‘normal’ year — plans to rationalise the scale and scope of existing branch networks; mergers and demergers; expansion and acquisition programmes; diversification into new areas; the influence of politics, policy and the economy… Put another way, despite the direct impact of coronavirus, there was plenty about 2020 that remained ‘business as usual’. Of course, none of this is to diminish the very real effect of the crisis on trading. One way or another, all of our respondents reflected upon the requirement to essentially transform their business models pretty much overnight (literally…) and the impact on operations from late March last year simply, obviously, cannot be exaggerated. Equally, many paused to consider how the emergency measures they implemented allowed for a second half performance that began to make up for the losses. Digitalisation and ecommerce initiatives, from click and PROFESSIONAL

“One way or another, all of our respondents reflected upon the requirement to essentially transform their business models pretty much overnight (literally…) and the impact on operations from late March last year simply, obviously, cannot be exaggerated.” collect services to full online transactions, were commonly seen to help fill the breach — Travis Perkins, for example, notes that online sales increased 18% to £57m in its P&H division whilst Huws Gray said that “online sales more than tripled in 2020 as a direct impact of Covid-19”. Yet for all the justifiable headlines about the rise of ecommerce, it should not be overstated that a lot of the surging recovery since the summer was the result of endeavours ‘on the ground’. From managing ‘contactless’ traffic flow and loading in the yard, to implementing the required safety measures in branch, the sector was able to rise to the challenge. Perhaps the real point then, is not that ecommerce is the sole direction of travel and more that the nation’s merchants have shown the flexibility to respond to the evolving needs of their customers — from ceding ground to the pureplay digital operators, there is now an effective online proposition; for the more ‘traditional’ customers who still want the welcoming, efficient and knowledgeable service they receive in branch, that choice emphatically remains available. A related factor is that our Top 20 chart

illustrates the ongoing evolution of the sector, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to describe a ‘typical’ merchant business. The broad scale of the various businesses that feature is not the issue; similarly, we have often discussed the notion of what doesn’t constitute a merchant business even in an ever-changing landscape. What is interesting is that we are seeing businesses grow — and trade — in numerous different ways. A growing focus on ‘retail’ areas such as showrooms is one, not least with general ‘non-professional’ sales a significant factor in lockdown as furlough and working from home led to a DIY boom that merchants were willing and able to capitalise on. On this, ecommerce has helped open the door, but additional trade solutions such as timber engineering, electrical wholesale arms and broader wholesale operations feature ever more strongly throughout the Top 20. Whilst this arguably makes it more difficult to deliver a comparative analysis, we actually feel this allows our listing to provide a much more substantial industry benchmarking barometer — and one that truly reflects the underlying strength and diversity of the companies making up the merchant sector as a whole.

NEWS UPDATE 24/7 service Pictured: Parkers’ Jason Goddard celebrates the launch of the merchant’s 24-hour opening, backed by a paperwork ‘genie service’ and all provided via its new website.

Parkers Building Supplies has launched a new online ‘24 hour trade shop’ in response to customers’ growing need to be able to order and buy materials at their convenience day or night, 365 days a year. The new online platform provides builders with a paperwork portal which stores, organises and files all paperwork — including cost estimates, statements, invoices, receipts — which can be viewed by project, by client and/or by date. MD Allun Pittingdale said: “Helping our customers to swap a paper-filled van dashboard to an easily accessible, organised online dashboard and being able to browse and order products 24/7 has been hugely welcomed.”

Sales solution Kerridge Commercial Systems (KCS) has extended its online trading offering with the launch of K8 Sales Rep Portal — described as a quick-to-deploy, web-based product that allows field sales teams to take orders while working away from the office. The site can be accessed from anywhere with a suitable internet connection and can be used on smartphone and tablet devices. Designed for occasional users, K8 Sales Rep Portal does not require users to have an in-depth knowledge of the core K8 system. Orders can be captured and processed quickly and efficiently, enabling businesses to continue trading with customers even when their sales teams are based remotely. James Mitchell, Managing Director for UK & Ireland at KCS, said: “The need for remote accessibility has become evident over the last year, and K8 Sales Rep Portal ensures sales teams can continue to capture and process orders away from the office. The easy-to-use interface and compatibility with mobile devices make it simple to deploy the solution across any business.”

BMF PUSHES BACK ALL INDUSTRY CONFERENCE TO NOVEMBER

Back with a bang Following the Prime Minister’s recent announcement outlining the UK’s roadmap out of coronavirus restrictions, the Builders Merchants Federation has confirmed that it is moving this year’s BMF-hosted All Industry Conference to 4-7 November 2021. The event, to be held in York and Harrogate, was originally scheduled to take place from June 17-20 whilst the PM announced June 21 as the date it is hoped that all lockdown measures will be eased. Accordingly, in a message from the BMF, CEO John Newcomb said: “We feel that for the safety and wellbeing of our Members, the conference should be moved to later in the year. Taking into account all major industry events, we are now moving the conference to 4-7 November 2021. We are looking forward to seeing you at what promises to be the single largest event in the construction industry this year.”

The rescheduled November event is set to go with a bang, as with the Conference now falling on 5 November it is particularly appropriate that it will take place in York — the birthplace of Guy Fawkes, whose gunpowder, treason and plot made an explosive contribution to our national history. The BMF explained that bookings will be carried forward to the rescheduled dates in November with second stage registration now being launched at the beginning of July, where delegates will be asked to confirm their delegate names and hotel rooming requirements. The venue and programme will remain as originally announced. If delegates have any questions, they are advised to contact the BMF Event Team via bmf@firstevent.co.uk

Home office boom New research from Häfele UK has revealed that, after around a year of working in multipurpose spaces and on makeshift surfaces, 40% of home working Brits are planning to create a dedicated office space in their property within the next 12 months — equating to a potential spend of £700m. Just 18% of would-be office workers have a purpose-designed study in their home, with 31% regularly working at their dining table and one in ten using the kitchen worktops to create a makeshift desk. Nearly a third (32%) of respondents said they often work from their lounge and 22% have cut their commute to the bare minimum by choosing to work from their bedroom. As Brits now expect to spend over half (54%) of their week working from home in 2021, many are preparing to do something about it. One in five respondents are planning to reconfigure an existing room to create a dedicated home office set up and 18% are considering converting an existing room into a dedicated office. Almost a third of work from homers are

considering going a step further by doing building works to create the space they need. The survey found that 19% are hoping to build a garden room or convert their garage, while one in ten is contemplating an extension. Combined, these plans are said to equate to a possible £700m spend on building work in the next 12 months, signalling a clear opportunity for builders’ merchants and their customers. TP PLC SURVEY REVEALS UK TRADESPEOPLE HOPEFUL ABOUT 2021 WORKLOADS

Reasons to be cheerful A survey of over 1,600 tradespeople across the country by Travis Perkins plc has revealed that the vast majority are optimistic on their prospects for 2021. Almost nine in ten (87%) of respondents, who represent a snapshot of the nation’s builders, electricians, plumbers, joiners and other tradespeople, believe their workloads will increase or remain the same this year versus 2020, while more than a third (36%) expect their materials purchases to increase in the next two months. The results continue to show that domestic repairs and maintenance will be the key component of workloads for the vast majority of the UK’s tradespeople, with 78% expecting this area to be the major driver of their work over the next two month period. Responses to the survey highlight the impact of the pandemic and corresponding restrictions on the types of domestic work being undertaken with a notable increase in the number of projects involving office builds and study conversions

(34% reporting an increase), driven by the expectation of a future where homeworking is significantly more commonplace. Similarly, there has been an increase in garden landscaping work (27% reporting an increase) as homeowners prioritise outdoor projects that are easier for tradespeople to undertake during lockdown and will see them enjoy their gardens more in the spring and summer months in anticipation of increased time at home. The report also showed that 92% of respondents expect a COVID-19 to have a greater impact on their work than the fallout from Brexit during 2021. The survey is the second full publication of Travis Perkins’ RMI Index following the inaugural report published in August 2020. More of the findings can be viewed online via www.rdr.link/ma002

Grant & Stone has further expanded its Group with the acquisitions of RGB Building Supplies, Total Plumbing Supplies and Buildit to create what is reportedly now the largest independent builders’ merchant group in southern England. PBM reports.

Way out west T

he enlarged Grant & Stone business will have 74 branches stretching from West London to Cornwall, with over 1,000 employees and combined revenues approaching £250m. These latest acquisitions follow on from other recent deals, including CRS Building Supplies in January and 3Counties Timber & Building Supplies last autumn. Of the latest acquisitions, RGB has a long and prestigious history from its founding in 1850 to become one of the leading independent builders’ merchants in the South West. Headquartered in Barnstaple and serving customers across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, RGB employs over 300 people and achieved revenues of £70 million in 2020. The business trades from 22 branches, with dedicated kitchen, bathroom and bedroom showrooms in many locations, and also operates a timber sawmill and

engineered wood product business under the RTD brand. Kevin Fenlon, RGB’s Chief Executive, will continue to run the business, reporting to Nick House, Grant & Stone’s Group CEO, and will join the Group board. Kevin said: “I am looking forward to joining the Board and working together with the Grant & Stone Directors to advance the long-term strategy and future direction of the Group. We are completely aligned in our ambitions for the company and how we achieve them, as well as having a shared approach to product excellence and outstanding customer service.” Established in 2009, Buildit operates from three branches across Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. The acquisition was initiated by Buildit’s owners’ succession planning and strengthens Grant & Stone’s geographic expansion by complementing the Group’s recent acquisition of the Somerset-based CRS.

Buildit’s management team — Managing Director Derek Meecham, Finance Director Brenda Meechan and Operations Director James Keyse — will work with Mat Miller, MD of Grant &

MKM Building Supplies has opened a new depot in Wallingford, Oxfordshire creating 17 new jobs in the area and bringing the total number of MKM branches nationwide to 80. The 1.2 acre site is headed-up by two branch directors, Stephen Busby and Liam Baldwin, and will offer a ‘one-stop shop’ service for both local building trade and retail customers. In addition to a wide range of building essentials, the branch also offers a building takeoff service, brick matching and free local delivery along with a kitchen & bathroom showroom and a landscaping display area.

Stone’s Builders & Timber Merchants division, to support the successful integration into the Grant & Stone Group. Derek Meecham said: “The Directors are proud of all that we have achieved to date but we recognise that this is the natural point for us to pass the company to new, trusted custodians who can deliver on its future potential. We are looking forward to facilitating a successful handover of the business to Grant & Stone and are confident that under its stewardship, Buildit will go from strength to strength.” Lastly, Total Plumbing Supplies (TPS) has five branches and serves trade and retail customers across Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset and Devon from its trade counters and through its Escape Bathrooms & Kitchens showrooms. Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Honiton, Devon, the acquisition was also initiated by TPS’ owners’ succession planning and further consolidates Grant & Stone’s presence in the South West and extends the Group’s plumbing and heating offering in the region. Founders, Clive Handford and Ian Moses will continue to lead the TPS business, working with Matt Bland, MD of Grant & Stone’s Plumbing and Heating division. Matt commented: “We are delighted to welcome TPS to the Grant & Stone Group. We have much in common, making this a compelling partnership. Our company is at a really exciting point in its development and this partnership ensures that we are well positioned to progress the numerous growth opportunities available to us.” Despite the challenges instigated by Covid-19, Grant & Stone states that the business has remained resilient with a “clear focus of what it wants to achieve for the future”. With the support of its strategic investment partner, Cairngorm Capital Partners, the acquisitions are said to “advance the Group’s ambition for further growth and future partnerships, developing its operations through a combination of acquisitions, new site development and organic growth”.

Continuing with its strategic expansion plans through acquisitions and the redevelopment of brownfield sites, Huws Gray has opened its latest branch at Eastham Place, Burnley. The depot is said to significantly strengthen the firm’s presence in Lancashire whilst Liam Parsisson has been promoted to the role of Branch Manager, having previously worked at Huws Gray’s Bolton branch. Robert Price has acquired Builders’ Bitz with the Aberdare-based building and roofing merchant becoming the twenty-third branch in the enlarged group, which is said to be the largest independent builders’ merchant in South East Wales. Molly Pike, Marketing Director at Robert Price, said: “This is an exciting time of growth for both businesses. Builders’ Bitz (which will continue to trade under its own banner) has an excellent reputation for service in the local community, and Robert Price is delighted to welcome the branch and its team into the group. Not only will it further expand our existing Robert Price branch reach and lorry fleet, but it will also provide Builders’ Bitz with the opportunity for further growth and development.”

MARKET MONITOR in association with

Going for gold In partnership with MRA Research and GfK, the Builders Merchants Federation has launched a new statistical report focused exclusively on the plumbing and heating market, setting the “gold standard in reliable market trends”. PBM considers the findings of the first results.

A

nalysing sales values through plumbing and heating outlets in Q4 2020, and providing an overview for the full year, the first edition of the BMF’s new Plumbing & Heating Merchant Index (PHMI) shows that Q4 sales continued the bounce back from the low point in Q2. Moreover, a direct comparison of Q4 sales in 2020 and 2019 found sales were down by just -0.4%, with one more trading day this year. Looking back, the impact of the first lockdown on 2020 Q2 results had seen year-on-year sales fall by -46.3% compared with Q2 2019. However, the start of the recovery was apparent in Q3 2020, where sales were down by -5.3% on the same period the previous year. Highlighting the bounce back in the second half of the year, P&H sales in the final quarter of 2020 were +11.9% higher than Q3 2020. However, with Q4 having five fewer trading days, average sales a day (which take trading days into account) were up +21.3%. Cumulative year-to-date sales turned negative in March 2020, and fell sharply in both April (-17.8%) and May (-24.5%). Since then, sales have steadily improved, finishing down

-13.2% on 2019 by the year end. PHMI trend data is indexed on the 12 months of 2019. The fourth quarter PHMI index (based on 2019 sales) was 103.4, making it the first quarter to exceed 100 in 2020. The ground-breaking research report is said to be the first to analyse point of sales tracking data collated from a range of specialist plumbing and heating merchants with combined annual sales of £3bn, representing 7580% of the total sales value of this market. Unlike data from sources based on estimates, or sales from suppliers to the supply chain, this upto-date data is based on actual sales from merchants to tradespeople. The data for the PHMI is taken solely from P&H specialists, including City Plumbing Supplies, Graham, James Hargreaves Plumbing Deport, PTS and Wolseley, who form part of GfK’s Plumbing & Heating Merchants Panel, and there is no overlap or double counting between the PHMI and the BMF’s established Builders Merchants Building Index which analyses sales at generalist merchants.

Commenting on the launch of the PHMI, BMF CEO John Newcomb said: “Plumbing & Heating is an important segment within the overall building materials market, with an annual value of around £5.4bn. While P&H sales through generalist merchants are reported in our established Builders Merchant Building Index, the majority of transactions are through specialist P&H merchants which have not previously been reported. The new Plumbing & Heating Index rectifies this and will deliver a far more accurate picture of sales activity in this segment.” Emile van der Ryst, Senior Client Insight Manager – Trade at GfK added: “With the crisis still in full swing and the roadmap to the end of lockdown recently announced, the launch of the Plumbing & Heating Index comes at an appropriate time. This will enhance visibility and shed light on an important part of the Trade sector which up until now has not been possible.” ■ For more information, visit www.phmi.co.uk

Merchants paint a brighter picture Across all aspects measured by The Pulse in the latest survey, merchants were noticeably more positive in February than they were in January.

E

xpectations were also strong for the next three months (February to April) and the next six months (February to July), whilst merchants’ confidence in both their own business and in the market had improved considerably compared to the previous month (January) and to February last year. The Pulse, by MRA Research, is a monthly tracking survey of merchants’ confidence and prospects. Telephone interviewing for the latest snapshot took place between 1st and 4th February 2021.

Impact of COVID-19 Forty-six percent of merchants said all their suppliers were currently able to supply them, with a further 50% saying most could (Chart 1). However, merchants commented on stock availability and extended lead times with responses including: “Supply chain shortages. All suppliers are still operating, but having to work round shortages and lengthy delivery times.”

Sales expectations Sales expectations for February compared to January were strong (net +30%) and continuing to improve (Chart 2). The North was most positive with a net +55% of merchants anticipating better sales. By merchant type, sales expectations among Independents were strongest (+42%), followed by Regional merchants (+32%) and Nationals (+21%). Of the merchants anticipating an increase, 9 out of 10 expected February’s sales to be up to 20% more than January. Nearly one in ten expected sales to increase by more than 20%. Compared to February 2020, Chart 2 also shows that merchants’ expectations improved although they remained cautious (net -6%). More large outlets expected sales to grow (+11%) than mid-sized branches (-13%). A net +12% of merchants in the Midlands expected growth, but stockists in Scotland, hit by more severe Covid restrictions, anticipated lower sales (-47%). Three quarters of merchants forecasting weaker year-on-year sales expected sales to fall by up to 20%. A quarter forecasted a decline of more than 20%.

The difference between the percentage of merchants expecting growth and those expecting a decrease is the net figure, expressed as a percentage. A positive net percentage indicates growth, a negative indicates decline. Net zero implies no change.

12 PBM APRIL 2021

012_PBM_APR21_Layout 1 10/03/2021 05:38 Page 13

TRENDS MONITOR The outlook for the next three months (February to April 2021) improved markedly, with a net +30% of merchants expecting to sell more, compared to only +8% in the previous month’s survey. Notably more merchants in the South (net +47%) forecast higher sales over the period than those in the North and Scotland (+15% and +13% respectively). Mid-sized outlets (+41%) and Independent branches (+38%) were bullish about prospects. One in three of those forecasting higher quarter-on-quarter sales, expect sales to increase by up to 10% (Chart 3). Over a half those expecting to sell more anticipate growth of 10-20% or more.

Confidence in the market Market confidence increased significantly in February compared to January (net +23%). Merchant confidence in the Midlands (+40%) and the South (+34%) bounced back, along with small merchant branches and Independents (both +33%). While confidence in the market remained weak compared to February 2020 (net -11%), it was recovering steadily (Chart 5). But merchants in Scotland (-60%) and large outlets (-22%) were still downbeat. Confidence in their business Merchants’ confidence in the prospects for their own business strengthened sharply in February compared to January (net +36%). Merchants in the Midlands and South (+52% and +50% respectively) were much more confident than those in the North (+18%) and Scotland (0%). Compared to February last year, merchants’ confidence in their own business had bounced back (net +17%) and had been steadily strengthening since April last year — also Chart 5. Independents (+38%) and small branches (+28%) were most confident.

Merchants’ sales expectations for the next six months continued to strengthen (net +38%) — Chart 4. Mid-sized outlets (net +56%) and those in the South (+50%) were most positive. Eight out of 10 of those predicting an increase in sales expect growth of up to 20%. More than one in five expect even stronger growth.

About the Pulse The Pulse is a monthly trends survey tracking builders’ merchants’ confidence and prospects over time. Produced by MRA Research, the insight division of MRA Marketing, it captures merchants’ views of future prospects in terms of sales expectations, confidence in their business, confidence in the market, and the key issues and problems they experience. This report is the 22nd in the series, with interviews conducted by MRA Research between 1st and 4th February 2021. Each month a representative sample of 100 merchants is interviewed. The sample is balanced by region, size and type of merchant, including nationals, regional multi-branch independents, and smaller independent merchants.

SPECIAL REPORT: TIMBER TRADING

Fleet of foot Since the beginning of the year, timber suppliers have had to perform some interesting manoeuvres to keep the postBrexit trade stable. David Hopkins, Chief Executive of the Timber Trade Federation, explains.

I

magine the business equivalent of combining the moves from TV’s dance shows Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing on Ice and you’ll understand the ‘fancy footwork’ around customs documentation, additional due diligence, haulage and trading with Northern Ireland that supplier members of the TTF have had to perform since 1 January, in order to keep the post-Brexit trade flowing. Add to this the announcement of a new voluntary, but morally obligatory, Code for Construction Products Information, which will start rolling out from this June, and one can’t help one’s inner juke box starting to play the theme tune to the murder mystery series Jonathan Creek — composer SaintSaëns’ Danse Macabre. But to create a firm future, your partners in the timber supply chain — from forest to port and UK distribution centres — have been planning their routines to maintain supplies

this year. With global demand for wood still at its highest-ever level, however, supply is likely to remain tight throughout 2021. The problems last year were not so much related to the availability of timber products: the amount of timber arriving in the UK during 2020 was not that far short of the level of imports in 2019. It was the unprecedented demand in the merchant sector stimulated by the various lockdowns,

“Our aim is to keep both our members and their markets as well informed as is possible when it comes to creating a firm future for building with timber in Britain.”

coupled with pandemic-hit mills, globally high demand for timber products, and the prices which other markets were prepared to pay to assure supplies. Major housebuilders, who procure supplies direct, fared better since they had the advantage of longer-term supply contracts. Merchants have now seen the difficulties that shorter-term purchasing strategies can cause when supplies are limited, and are now in much closer dialogue with suppliers. The end of the transition period has brought some additional problems in its wake, but many timber suppliers had planned ahead for the first quarter of this year so have been in a better position for continuing trade

flows. Problems that have occurred relate to the choreography of form-filling. An example causing some confusion has been whether or not phytosanitary certificates are needed for certain products, where there has been a difference in interpretation between central advice issued by government and consistency

in its application by those admitting products into the UK. Another aspect affecting some areas of timber, and particularly panel products, is the Northern Ireland Protocol, which has a set of different documentary challenges of its own. New due diligence checks under UKTR

are also taking additional administration and attention, though anyone with problems can head to the TTF’s Brexit Hub web pages (www.rdr.link/ma003) where we are summarising emerging situations and providing up-to-date guidance. With haulage associations saying that time taken in customs checks at borders has increased, and, at the other end of the supply chain, the Construction Products Association estimating that construction output could rise by 14% this year, it seems that patience is a virtue that we will all have to cultivate. The TTF maintains a constant dialogue with the Office for Product Safety & Standards on matters relating to due diligence, and we are working our way through the requirements of the new voluntary Code of Construction Product Information. Our aim is to keep both our members and their markets as well informed as is possible when it comes to creating a firm future for building with timber in Britain. ■ For more information and news from the Timber Trade Federation, enter the shortcode www.rdr.link/ma004

Treated timber ■ The Timber Trade Federation and Wood Protection Association are mounting a major awareness campaign promoting the provision of accurate and specific information about treated timber. New leaflets and a poster demystifying treated timber and its applications will be available to merchants from 1st April as part of a major awareness campaign being staged by the TTF and WPA, supported by the Timber Decking & Cladding Association. Other educational resources include a new training presentation and webinar whilst TTF members will also, from 1st April, be highlighting the Use Class applications for any treated timber products they supply. Information will be detailed on documentation such as sales and delivery notes and invoices. David Hopkins, TTF CEO, said: “It’s essential that the sector’s customers throughout the supply chain have accurate information detailing the purposes for which the treated timber they are buying can be used. The Code for Construction Product Information, which begins its roll-out from June, although voluntary at present, obliges companies providing information about construction products to ensure their information is clear and unambiguous. “Timber Trade Federation members are getting ahead of the curve when it comes to timber treatments, better enabling merchants to make sure that they in turn are selling fit for purpose products.” Gordon Ewbank, CEO of the Wood Protection Association, added: “Non-specific terms such as ‘green treated’ will no longer be acceptable in a post-Grenfell world where the accuracy of construction product information is essential. With the participation of TTF members and the bank of resources available, there should be no difficulty for merchants in identifying which timber has been treated for which end use application.” The new leaflet, ‘Getting the treatment right’, unfolds to provide an A3 poster which merchants can display in-branch to help customers identify more accurately their end use applications, and thus define the level of treatment necessary. It will be distributed through TTF partners such as the NMBS, and will be available from the TTF and WPA websites, ttf.co.uk and thewpa.org.uk

TRAINING ZONE

A Foundation for success With a clear roadmap out of the coronavirus pandemic now in place, the BMF can finally offer its first Foundation Degree in Merchant Management run in conjunction with the University of Hertfordshire, and with the potential provision of bursary support from the Worshipful Company of Builders Merchants.

T

he Foundation Degree (FdA) was due to run in 2020 but the pandemic forced its postponement. The University of Hertfordshire is now looking forward to welcoming the first cohort of 10 students to start the programme this Autumn. Part of the BMF’s extensive training and career development programme, the FdA provides further progression for those in the builders’ and timber merchant sector who have previously been awarded the BMF Diploma in Merchant Management or have at least two years’ experience as a manager. The FdA programme gives students a strong understanding of the business knowledge and skills required to succeed within the merchant sector. Organised in three semesters, focusing in turn on the customer experience, people and organisations and business improvement plans, the FdA can be achieved in 12 months of part time study. Those completing the degree also gain an additional qualification in Leadership and

Management from the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). For students seeking further development, the FdA can lead onto an Honours Degree in Leadership and Professional Development. Teaching is delivered through blended learning and a mix of bi-monthly, two-day blocks at the University of Hertfordshire’s Hatfield Campus, live webinars and 24/7 access to the Learning Resources Centre online. FdA students also have access to the University’s extensive online resources, Master Classes and Sports Village. Course fees are £6,250 per student, but funding support is available from the charity of the Worshipful Company of Builders’ Merchants. Up to 10 bursaries for up to £2,000 towards the course fees are provided, and students employed by businesses with limited training funds available are particularly invited to apply. Short course update The BMF is also ramping up its programme of one and two day courses in anticipation of faceto-face training returning from the summer. Throughout February and March a series of online, one hour taster sessions were run which covered 12 different courses on sales, stock management, margin management, customer experience, e-commerce and data analysis. The taster sessions proved extremely popular with over 1,000 people registering.

Given the last 12 months, it was no surprise that the two courses that attracted the most interest were ‘e-Commerce and Digitalisation of Merchanting in a Post-Covid World’ and ‘How to Increase Sales over the Phone’. Several companies subsequently booked incompany training programmes, and the BMF’s upcoming open courses on Stock Management and Maximising Margin are also filling up fast. For more information about the FdA Merchant Management or BMF short courses, please contact Paige Godsell at paige.godsell@bmf.org.uk or call 02476 854980. ■ BMF training ranges from formal Apprenticeships and sector-specific Diplomas and a Foundation Degree in Merchant Management, to online product knowledge and other specialist skills training.

SPECIAL REPORT: SELLING A BUSINESS

Passing on the torch? Cost: premiums are typically around 1% of the purchase price. The issue is that there is usually a minimum premium that is likely to be in the region of £30,000 or more, which will make it cost prohibitive on smaller transactions. Timing: the process needs to be managed from the outset of the transaction. This type of policy is not as simple as taking out other forms of insurance related to your business.

1: Get the right advisors From the outset, sellers need advisors who give them the best chance of achieving the right price. In addition to legal advisors, this is likely to be a mix of a specialist consultant or corporate finance advisor, and accountants. These advisors will be key in advising on the financial aspects of the sale, including those in the acquisition agreement. Commonly, there will be some form of completion accounts produced after completion to determine the ultimate sale price. If this isn’t done correctly then sellers could find themselves paying money back, or not receiving what they are expecting.

●

2: Insurance Sellers are expected to provide contractual reassurance to any buyer about the business. These statements, known as warranties, will cover the whole of the business including matters relating to compliance with laws, employment and condition of assets. The buyer usually has somewhere between 12 and 24 months to bring a claim. Many sellers (particularly those who are not involved in the day to day running of the business) look to insure against this risk. Attractive as this sounds, there are two key initial points to consider:

3: Contractual paperwork This is a key area to get in order. The business may not have ‘formal’ contracts with suppliers, but would usually at least have been issued with terms and conditions. Businesses with equipment finance will likely have formal hire, lease or similar agreements and terms and conditions. Having complete and up to date documentation in place in respect of all aspects of the business prior to commencing a transaction sends a clear message to a buyer about the running of the business. Contractual paperwork will also form part of the subject matter for the warranties (see above).

20 PBM APRIL 2021

●

The above said, generally, warranty claims are rare and insurance is seldom taken out on sales in this sector based on our experience.

While many independent builders’ merchants continue to be handed down through the generations, for some firms there comes a time when the moment is right to sell up. As buying or selling a company comes with many challenges, Jamie Earley, Corporate Senior Associate at Trethowans, shares his top five legal tips for a smooth, successful sale.

4: Regulatory Due to the nature of the business, health and safety is often a key focus for buyers. However, no buyer will expect any business to be perfect and would probably rather see robust procedures, with a track record of minor issues that have been resolved quickly, rather than a purportedly clear history. So, sellers should consider getting a health and safety audit themselves before agreeing to sell. Since the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was implemented in 2018, buyers have been paying closer attention to data protection. Whilst it’s easy to think this wouldn’t have much application to builders’ merchants, this legislation does (unfortunately) impact all businesses — sellers may have a customer database or mailing list for example. Given the level of potential fines, most buyers will expect the seller to indemnify them (hold them harmless) for any issues

sufficiently serious or fraud is involved) as it could affect its reputation and put off any other future sellers. In the same vein, sellers should consider asking the buyer if they can speak to any other sellers they have acquired from and ask the buyer directly about warranty claims on past transactions.

associated with this. This loss would not ordinarily be covered by the insurance referred to above.

intimidated by a sale to a much larger entity. Whilst worthy of consideration, there are some positives:

5: Who are you selling to? Sellers should carry out due diligence on buyers. This is particularly important if any of the purchase price is to be paid after completion. However, there are also slightly more subtle but equally important issues to consider. For example, some sellers can be

Experience: a serial acquirer will have gone through the process before, which should make it smoother. Warranty claims: linked to the earlier point, a serial acquirer, whilst relying on the warranties, is less likely to have the appetite to bring a warranty claim (unless it is

Whilst on rare occasions a sales will come about completely unsolicited — an “offer one simply couldn’t refuse” — generally the exit is planned, giving sellers enough time to prepare for sale by taking the steps above.

GARDENS & LANDSCAPING

Outside edge With outdoor living becoming a huge feature of our lives in 2020, many homeowners will be thinking about getting their garden ready for the spring and the warmer weather ahead — not to mention the likelihood of ongoing outdoor entertaining once again. Paul Lees at Tarmac Cement looks at the top landscaping trends for 2021 and what advice merchants can offer customers.

T

his last year has seen many changes in how we live and use the space around us, but one of the biggest shifts was, of course, the amount of time we spent at home. And the garden in particular proved to be something of a sanctuary for many in these tumultuous times. Rather unsurprisingly, the time spent doing DIY or gardening rose by 147% last March and April, according to the Office for National Statistics. And the trend for spending time outdoors is set to stay, with the impact of lockdowns marking a very clear shift in how many of us perceive the garden space. With this in mind, merchants can use this as an opportunity to understand what trends could be set to influence homeowners and, in turn, what useful tips they can offer customers in the branch.

Inside-outside living People talk about bringing the outside in, but when deciding on garden furniture and layout, bringing the inside out is the newest trend. This means ensuring a seamless flow from the inside space to the garden by transforming the garden into a stylish entertaining hub for friends and family. More than just adding a garden sofa, your customers can explore the different ways their customers can add value to alfresco aspirations with concrete worktops, furniture and accessories. With the UK’s love of BBQs, installing a concrete worktop is an effective way to bring the kitchen outside — and adding other warmer, natural textures like fabric or wood can prevent it feeling too austere. Be sure to advise your customers that, as concrete

worktops are generally long and thin beams, it’s critical to use a product with sufficient workability, aggregate grading and strength such as Tarmac Blue Circle High Strength concrete (40N). In addition, a brick barbeque is simple to build and use just by using a pre-bagged, ready to use mortar mix such as Tarmac Blue Circle Quality Assured Mortar which requires only the addition of clean water. Small gardens Adding the perception of space can be achieved by creating a path in the garden. Some designers advise avoiding a straight path, instead incorporating diagonals into the line to trick the eye into making the space appear larger. In addition, laying a paved border is another solution for a small garden — here, a pre-packed ready to use product will overcome many problems relating to site mixing. Less is more The trend for more scaled back design in favour of finishing and attention to detail is set to be big this year — and grey looks like it will continue to be a go-to colour in garden design. For landscaping projects, polished concrete is

“One of the biggest opportunities for merchants with garden buildings lies in a growing army of competent DIYers.” a versatile and durable solution for garden elements such as planters, pathways and patios. To further enhance the design, adding unique elements such as coloured glass can further complement its simplicity. The polishing process involves using progressively finer grinding tools until the desired texture is reached. For high traffic areas such as walkways or patios, it’s best to use a high-strength concrete and you should

suggest only polishing these areas up to three times to maintain a safe slip rating of R10. For decorative planters, you can grind up to nine times to achieve a completely smooth and polished finish. Working from the garden Finally, with home working set to continue in some form, garden workspaces will undoubtedly continue their boom. Even before coronavirus, ONS statistics showed the number of home workers rose by 75% between 2008 and 2018. With average UK house sizes decreasing, the value of a garden office space is all the greater, with experts suggesting that most garden rooms will add around 5% to the value of a property. One of the biggest opportunities for merchants with garden buildings lies in a growing army of competent DIYers, willing

to take on the job of laying a suitable base on which the structure will be built. The process here is no different to laying a patio area. We recommend 200-300mm for a crushed, granular Mot Type 1 material — and remind customers to compact it down with a wacker plate or heavy garden roller too. Follow this with a slab base on top of the sub-base. The value of the outdoor space The significance of the garden space in our lives is only going to increase this year. Taking the time to understand the trends set to influence your customers’ purchasing decisions can help boost your business and reputation — and ensure you remain a step ahead of the competition. ■ For the latest news from Tarmac Cement, enter the shortcode wwwrdr.link/ma006

GARDENS & LANDSCAPING

Decked out Jonathan Cooper, Trex Business Manager at Arbor Forest Products, explains how merchants can overcome key challenges this decking season.

T

o say the least, 2020 was an unpredictable year — from lockdowns to a surge in demand for home improvements and ongoing Brexit negotiations, it’s no surprise that the industry faced a number of supply issues throughout last year. With many people still spending more time at home than ever before, homeowners are looking set to continue using this unique period in time to carry out home improvement projects. In particular, with guidance recommending socialising outdoors where possible for some time yet, more and more people are turning to decking as a way of making the most of their outside space — with many decking installers busier than ever. Installers facing another intense decking season means that merchants are set to experience a busy few months too, but how can some of last year’s issues be avoided? Following the UK’s first lockdown in March last year, with the majority of people spending most of their time at home, demand for refurbishments saw a large increase — something many merchants will have experienced first-hand. And as homeowners continue to be encouraged to stay at home as much as possible, this desire

for home improvements has made its way outdoors as people want to extend their living space outside. One of the key ways people have been choosing to do this is by installing decking — something which has been showing an upwards trend since the 1990s — as it’s a great way to create an outdoor living space, and designs can be adapted to accommodate whatever space is available. While it’s fantastic to see the home improvement market continuing to do so well during such turbulent times, it’s no surprise that it has put a strain on the supply chain. But it’s not just an increased demand merchants have been faced with over the past year, as the ongoing Brexit negotiations and general supply issues created a knock-on effect across the industry. The political and economic uncertainty

surrounding Brexit — particularly the impact this would have on the movement of goods — was yet another cause for concern for all members of the timber supply chain. While Britain has now formally left the European Union, taking away the high level of uncertainty caused by long Brexit negotiations, 2021 is still likely to see a period of adjustment which may in turn create some supply delays. And with the Timber Trade Federation predicting that supply shortages may continue through at least the first half of 2021, it’s clear that merchants must expect the unexpected in order to thrive during these unprecedented times.

“As the UK continues to adjust to not only the ever-changing situation presented by the pandemic but also the aftermath of Brexit, it’s imperative that merchants work in a way which allows for change.”

with the latest news and developments related to the industry. Following key industry bodies, news outlets and suppliers on social media is often one of the quickest ways to find any updates on issues which may affect the supply of decking products.

Maximising opportunities Market challenges provide an opportunity for all levels of the supply chain to learn valuable lessons in how to deal with them, and there are three key ways for merchants to overcome the obstacles that started last year and are continuing into this year too: by being knowledgeable, responsive and communicative. Be knowledgeable Perhaps one of the simplest ways for merchants to avoid some of the challenges faced during last year’s decking season is to keep up-to-date

Be responsive If last year taught us anything, it’s that circumstances can change in the blink of an eye. As the UK continues to adjust to not only the ever-changing situation presented by the pandemic but also the aftermath of Brexit, it’s imperative that merchants work in a way which allows for change. Plans should be in place for how to respond to different scenarios — whether that’s for varying levels of lockdown or supply issues, for example. Pre-empting difficult situations and having a plan on how to deal with them before they arise means that if and when they do, responding to them will be a much smoother process.

Be communicative Communication is key across all levels of the decking supply chain, and merchants are no exception. With decking installers facing yet another decking season and beyond in high demand, they will be relying on their chosen merchant to have the products they need available when they need them. Of course, 2020 proved that external issues can have a huge knock-on effect for supply; but when this is the case, merchants must communicate as openly and honestly with decking installers as possible in order to maintain a mutually beneficial relationship. By staying informed, having plans in place for changing situations and maintaining open lines of communication, merchants will be in a strong position as we head into another busy decking season – and beyond. ■ To find out more about Arbour Forest Products enter the shortcode www.rdr.link/ma007

2021 Top 20: PBM provides the background context behind the UK merchant sector’s largest businesses’ trading during 2020. It is no surprise to say the Covid-19 pandemic had a seismic impact on the performance of the UK’s largest merchant organisations, yet our countdown also shows the full range of activity as seen in any normal year — mergers, new depots, branch closures and new business activities. Furthermore, 2021 has already seen some significant transformative action within the sector. Huws Gray, Lords Group Trading and the National Timber Group have all made acquisitions outside of our 2020 full year data period, whilst the series of major acquisitions made by Grant & Stone will propel the business some way up our countdown next time around. Selco and MKM are amongst those to have opened new branches, whilst Wolseley UK’s demerger from Ferguson plc was completed via private equity investment from Clayton, Dubilier & Rice in January. Looking back to 2020, Travis Perkins plc continues to take its place at the head of our list. Our figures exclude Wickes to allow for a closer ‘like-for-like’ comparison (across the chart, direct comparisons are increasingly difficult given the broad constituent areas in which our Top 20 operate…), and the Group has reported “resilient trading amidst significant uncertainty” highlighting the “robust recovery” experienced during the second half of the year, driven by strong RMI demand. Saint-Gobain Building Distribution maintains second, whilst Wolseley UK reclaims third following a year in which it “took steps to refocus the business on a

clear customer proposition, separating out the Building Services businesses and branches (Wolseley Pipe and Wolseley Climate) and Plumbing and Heating (Wolseley Plumb & Parts) to ensure that customers have access to a service and expertise that aligns to their needs”. In fourth, Grafton Group plc’s CEO Gavin Slark acknowledged the impact of the crisis but reflected on the strong recovery in the second half of the year, outlining that the measures taken by the Group would have a lasting effect on its future performance. He said: “Grafton today is a stronger, more resilient, more digitally and sustainability savvy business than it was before the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic… underpinned by an improved customer proposition across all of our businesses.” With ten locations added to its network in 2020, MKM outlined its plans to continue its new branch opening programme with 15-20 additional sites earmarked for 2021. In sixth, UK Plumbing Supplies is the first ‘new’ name on our countdown, having officially transitioned from Plumbing & Heating Investments Limited on 1st January 2020. Reflecting the realities of a sustained period of branch closures, Huws Gray notes that “online sales more than tripled in 2020 as a direct impact of Covid-19” whilst the company also made a number of acquisitions to its network in 2020. The acquisition trail continues, with the purchase of Builders Suppliers (West Coast) finalised in February 2021. Having just missed out last year, Lords

Group Trading makes a significant jump up the rankings as a result of its acquisition (in December 2019) of APP Wholesale. In March 2021, the Group’s Hevey Building Supplies brand announced the acquisition of MAP Building & Civil Engineering Supplies, continuing the growth plan for the family-owned Group, which is “aiming to become a top five supplier of building materials in the next five years.” In ninth, the National Timber Group is another to have already expanded its operations in 2021 with its Arnold Laver arm acquiring Hymor Timber. In 2020, Arnold Laver joined NBG with its fellow brands such as North Yorkshire Timber, Thornbridge Sawmills and Rembrand Timber coming on board as associate members. Concluding the Top 10, the Independent Builders Merchants Group said that 2020 was very much about consolidating and integrating its newly expanded businesses following a “busy year of acquisitions in 2019”. Doubtless echoing the sentiments of many, it added: “We look ahead to 2021 with a sense of optimism for strong customer demand and further growth opportunities, along with significant developments in our ecommerce capabilities across the Group.” We are extremely grateful for the support of the sector in compiling this industry barometer. More details on each of our submissions for the full ‘Top 20’ (and those who narrowly missed the cut…) will be available on our website www.professionalbuildersmerchant.co.uk

GARDENS & LANDSCAPING COMPOSITE PRIME ABZORBIT Sustainable composite decking and cladding firm, Composite Prime, has launched a new cleaning spray that treats and removes grease and stubborn oily stains from uncapped decking products. Easy to use, Abzorbit’s formula works to remove marks from both composite and traditional timber decking products in residential and commercial settings. The aerosol spray is described as a suitable solution for high traffic areas which are prone to spillages and stains, including hospitality venues and outdoor eateries, whilst it can also be used for post-construction cleaning.

ROYD TOOL GROUP OPTIMAXX STAINLESS STEEL DECKING SCREWS Quality decking installations not only demand that weather-resistant materials are used but also the right fixing, and as decking season swings into action again, Optimaxx has expanded its line of wood screws with the release of its latest Stainless Steel Decking Screws. Designed to work on composite, hardwood and treated timber decking, the screws are said to feature a range of excellent application benefits including serrations on the lower thread to enable quick and safe fastening along with a non-threaded shank to allow two materials to be pulled tightly together while the upper thread locks the deck board securely. With a cylindrical head designed for fixing into the groove of the deck board and ensuring a secure fit, the rust-resistant screws are made from A2-304 stainless steel. With an arrow shaped point, the screws provide a fast start without predrilling whilst minimising the risk of splintering. The screws are available in 200-piece tubs and are available to stockists with the option of floor standing cardboard POS displays which are able to hold both the Optimaxx Decking Screw tubs and the new Stainless Steel Decking screw tubs, with point-of-sale artwork printed to suit.

ARTIFICIALGRASS.COM AIR RANGE Emissions, exhaust fumes and fossil fuel combustions render our living, working and leisure spaces a major health risk, with the World Health Organisation attributing air pollution as playing a part in approximately 7 million deaths each year. Mature trees are typically in the front ranks of this fight, with their foliage absorbing and purifying air. However, the new AIR range of air-purifying, selfcleaning artificial grass from ArtificialGrass.com is said to replicate the benefits to such an extent that one average lawn could contend with over 1 kilogram of nitrogen oxide per year, neutralising the equivalent of a car engine’s emissions running 20 kilometres a day for a whole year. Andy Driver, the firm’s Sales and Marketing Director, said: “We are really excited to be launching our eco-friendly AIR range. For our products to be able to play their part in purifying air quality, it is quite remarkable. It is going to be of particular benefit in major cities across the UK where pollution is a significant issue, and a cleaner solution is needed. “Not only can our products be recycled at the end of their life, but they will also now be continuously contributing to a better environment throughout their lifecycle.” In addition to its air-purifying qualities, the “ground-breaking” AIR technology in the material’s treatment prior to supply and installation is also said to “put an end to lingering odours from pets and any threat of mould, moss or algae”. The range is available in two varieties to suit aspect, purpose, finish and the desired end result. Clarity AIR is described as a soft touch 30mm lawn with natural multi-green tones whilst Active AIR is a “rich green, deep 32mm grass, ideal for the busy family garden”.

DRAINAGE & WATER MANAGEMENT

Weathering the storm

Darren Crane, National Sales Manager – Buying Groups and Independent Merchants at ACO Water Management, outlines some of the key water management considerations for merchants to be aware of in the year ahead.

L

ast year was a difficult time for the construction industry, and many are predicting that 2021 could prove to be crucial for the sector. With a raft of challenges and emerging technologies to keep abreast of, merchants are set to play a critical role in ensuring their customers have access to the latest information and products. Indeed, one of the key issues confronting UK construction is related to the effective management of surface water where it must mitigate the effects of increasingly unpredictable weather, while

30 PBM APRIL 2021

adapting to the latest trends and adhering to legislative developments. As the landscape that developers and contractors must navigate continues to change, merchants will become more important than ever as a hub of information. Tasked with staying up-to-date and offering expert advice to their customers, it is the role of the merchant to be a fountain of knowledge on everything drainage. Sustainability Perhaps the biggest buzzword across construction is sustainability. It’s something that has been growing in importance for water management for several years now, particularly in light of the rising number of storm-level events. This is especially critical when it comes to new builds. To highlight the extent of the challenge, over the last decade there have been 85,000 houses built on land that has been designated at the highest risk of

flooding — that amounts to one in ten of all new homes. SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) play a vital role in sustainable flood risk management, by mimicking natural processes to control the volume of surface water. Regulations surrounding SuDS vary between regions across the UK, and while they are not yet mandatory for developments

030_PBM_APR21_Layout 1 10/03/2021 06:29 Page 31

in England, they are an increasingly common sight across construction sites. Incorporating SuDS during the design stage of a project is the best way to ensure effective water management on-site, and this requires understanding of the key elements. Alongside the relevant products, merchants should familiarise themselves with the four pillars of the SuDS philosophy — water quality, water quantity, amenity, and biodiversity. Biodiversity The final pillar is an emerging trend in its own right, with a number of high-profile campaigns demonstrating the focus on biodiversity. Former Transport Secretary Chris Grayling MP’s call for greater protection for hedgehogs (take a look at www.rdr.link/ma012), for example, is indicative of the responsibility of developers to minimise their impact on the surrounding environment. Similarly, the much-discussed Environment Bill is also set to write environmental practices into UK law for the first time, further emphasising the need for merchants and their customers to keep abreast of the latest technological advancements. ACO Water Management’s wildlife portfolio includes a range of guidance systems, refuges, and nest boxes to

help meet biodiversity targets across infrastructure projects and new housing developments. Landscaping boom A defining feature of the first UK lockdown was the significant increase in home improvements, especially work that enhanced outdoor spaces. Indeed, a survey carried out by Money.co.uk of more than 1,000 UK homeowners showed 76% of respondents spent money on home improvements, averaging £4,000 per project. This shows no signs of slowing down, with many predicting that outside space will increasingly become a determining factor in the housing market for years to come. It follows, therefore, that merchants need to

pay close attention to the design trends dominating landscaping projects. And this is where drainage products that offer a sleek aesthetic finish become even more relevant. Discretion is often a top priority when it comes to water management solutions, with homeowners valuing systems that deliver high hydraulic performance without detracting from the overall look of a garden. An example of this is ACO’s HexDrain Brickslot, used in a number of award-winning projects by Langlea Garden Design and Construction. In projects such as Line (pictured) and Pocket Oasis, the understated HexDrain Brickslot is used to “quietly manage water flow without drawing the eye”. With landscapers and housebuilders increasingly tasked with finding aesthetically-pleasing solutions, merchants can expect to face more frequent requests for these types of products. The invaluable role of the merchant The diverse nature of a merchant’s customer base means that they are invariably masters of many trades. Whether it is expert advice or providing the most appropriate products for a given situation, merchants are a priceless asset to their customers. With 2021 set to be a defining year for the construction industry, it’s important to stay up-to-date with the key water management trends and challenges. ■ For more information and access to ACO Water Management’s merchant support, please visit the firm’s Merchant Zone by entering the shortcode www.rdr.link/ma013 whilst you can view its latest merchant training videos via www.rdr.link/ma014

DRAINAGE & WATER MANAGEMENT

Yorkshire terriers Whilst the pandemic put paid to the milestone anniversary celebrations planned by Naylor Industries last year, the company remains in resilient mood despite the disruption caused by Covid-19. PBM reveals more.

I

n 2020, Barnsley-based Naylor Industries celebrated its 130th year. And the company, which was founded as a clay pipe manufacturer by George Wilfred Naylor in 1890, remains in family hands under CEO Edward Naylor, the fourth generation of the family to head up the business. Founded in the West Yorkshire village of Denby Dale, the firm retains a Yorkshire focus today with three of its six factories being in the Barnsley area. And while the Naylor Group still manufactures clay pipes, recent decades have seen the business diversify, launching a range of plastic and concrete products and carrying out a multi-million pound programme of investment in its manufacturing capabilities. Business turnover now exceeds £55m and the company employs some 400 people. Edward Naylor, Group Chief Executive, commented: “We’re very proud of our history as very few businesses make it through to the fourth generation. We had hoped to have a party to celebrate the 130-year landmark — but that went the way of the pandemic…” Postponed party aside, the business describes the impact of Covid as being “disruptive but not disastrous”. It remained open to supply essential infrastructure projects throughout the pandemic whilst its own development work was maintained, with the business’ older equipment being modernised and additional plant being

32 PBM APRIL 2021

installed to increase capacity and broaden the product portfolio. Recent weeks, for example, have seen the launch of MetroPave — a new cost-effective grass grid product for domestic applications — in addition to enabling works kick-starting the expansion of the company’s main Plastic Extrusion hall. Clay Pipe manufacturing remains important to Naylor and Densleeve — Naylor’s push fit range — is widely used in DN100, 150, 225 & 300mm sizes, with a range of complementary fittings available to support stockists who tend to carry pipes and fittings in all four sizes to serve local contractors and to back up their direct to site supply of volume business. Also available is the flexible Band-Seal coupling range, which permits pipes of different sizes and materials to be interconnected. Naylor’s Plastic Pipe range, meanwhile, primarily comprises corrugated single and twin wall HDPE pipe, with Land Drain, Twin Wall Drain and Twin Wall Duct being the most important product groups. Land Drain coils are black single wall corrugated pipes used primarily in agricultural applications. Various coil lengths are offered and sizes include 60, 80, 100 and 160mm diameter; 80 and 100mm coils are particularly widely stocked. Twin Wall Drain is black double wall corrugated pipe available perforated or unperforated in 6m lengths. Pipes are

available from 100 to 1050mm diameter with yellow (gas) and blue (water) pipe available for specific industry applications. Finally, Twin Wall Ducting is for carrying a wide range of service and utility cables. Ducting is supplied in coils and sticks and is offered in a wide variety of colours — black for utilities, yellow and blue for gas and water ducting, orange for street lighting and traffic signals, green for CCTV and purple for motorway communications. The most common sizes are from 50-300mm, and the references tend to include the internal and external diameters — eg: 50/63mm duct is a 2” duct with an inside diameter of 50mm and an external diameter of 63mm. This — together with 94/110mm (4”) — is a particularly common size. In addition, Naylor offers a range of accessories and ancillaries including draw cord and structural and non-structural duct (access) boxes. Whilst most of Naylor’s output is structured wall (corrugated), the company also offers solid wall product: smooth bore polyethylene (PE) and General Purpose (GP) duct. A wide range of fittings and accessories is available across all Naylor’s ranges and it also offers a quick and flexible fabrications service, which allows catch pits and special fittings to be speedily made to order. Recent years have seen Naylor launch a complementary range of Environmental/Water Management

products, including grass grids for domestic, commercial and HGV applications and a plastic attenuation crate. Mixed deliveries Over the last few months, under the supervision of Sales Director Emma Burkinshaw (née Kilner) and MD Richard Edwards (pictured), Naylor has been working on integrating its individual product teams with the objective of being able to offer a ‘one stop shop’ service to mixed and heavyside merchants.

Orders for Clay and Plastic pipes, Band-Seals and ancillaries can all now be combined in a single transaction and in a single delivery. Most recently, Naylor has recognised that many of its pipe merchants also had a requirement for concrete bridging lintels, but were unable to purchase in the quantities needed to make up a carriage paid load. As a result of a tie-in with sister company Naylor Concrete Products since February, these too can be combined with pipe orders. The final word goes to Naylor MD Richard Edwards who commented: “We’ve

www.professionalbuildersmerchant.co.uk

grown considerably over recent years but have worked hard to retain the personal service which you would expect from a family business.” With industry forecasts predicting a buoyant post pandemic period for the civils and infrastructure markets, Naylor looks well placed for a period of continued growth. ■ For more information on Naylor Industries’ full range of pipes, drainage products, concrete lintels and more, enter the shortcode www.rdr.link/ma015

DRAINAGE & WATER MANAGEMENT

Ray of light As the globe contends with Covid-19, public health, personal hygiene and sanitation is at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Biologists, public health experts and researchers are exploring all possible routes of virus transmission, including the possibility of contamination from water and sewage. Steve Boyer, Managing Director of Marsh Industries, reveals more.

W

ithout UV disinfection, it is well known that wastewater effluent can retain a mass of hazardous pathogens that could infect natural waterways, causing potentially serious environmental health issues. Although it is not yet proven that Covid-19 can survive or spread through contact with water and sewage, environmental biologists at the University of Stirling have warned that the potential spread of Covid-19 via sewage “must not be neglected” in the battle to protect human health (see www.rdr.link/ma016 for details). UV treatment has, however, been proven to eliminate bacteria such as E. coli and various other strains of coronavirus including

SARS. UV light deactivates pathogens so that they cannot survive in clean water, meaning they cannot replicate and infect future waterways. It is also one of the safest disinfectants available due to the lack of chemicals used and produced by the device. The most common method of effluent disinfection used in off-mains sewage treatment plants is to install or connect a separate UV disinfection unit to the outlet of the sewage treatment plant. And to combat the risk of virus transmission in waterways, Marsh Industries has developed an innovative ultra violet (UV) disinfection system — the Marsh:UV — which removes 99% faecal coliform bacteria levels from sewage treatment plant effluent.

www.professionalbuildersmerchant.co.uk

Designed with local authorities, camp sites, holiday parks and sites of special scientific interest (SSSI) in mind, The Marsh:UV disinfection unit can be supplied as an integral part within the Marsh Ultra:Polylok range of sewage treatment plants (50-500+PE) or as a standalone unit which can be installed at the outlet end of any existing sewage treatment plant. When the Marsh:UV disinfection unit is filled with wastewater, the ultraviolet light assembly operates continuously with a lamp surface temperature range of 105-120°F providing optimum UV light output and long lamp lifespan. A single UV maximum flow through the

■ Given the continuing nature of restrictions on face to face contact, Marsh Industries has been ramping up its digital engagement with customers. For example, it has recently launched a series of short product training videos designed to provide a brief overview of its fully accredited range of off-mains drainage products. The series, titled ‘Tea-break Training’, responds to the requests from merchants, architects, engineers and installers for product knowledge while in-person training is impractical due to Covid-19 restrictions. Developed in-house, the videos are no more than seven minutes long and can be digested easily during a daily tea break. Marsh Industries’ Business Development Manager, Michael Harrison, who presents the video series, said: “Our Tea-Break Training

videos will deliver 5-7 minute overviews of our core product ranges, enabling the individual to understand the basics of our offering and how to engage with us for further support. “It is often a logistical challenge to bring together a team for a training session in the same place and at the same time, and this challenge is amplified due to the current working climate. However, in true Marsh form, we haven’t let this problem slow us down and (our) Tea-Break Training videos can be absorbed quickly at a time to suit the individual.” New videos are being added to the series continuously and will cover the company’s range of domestic off-mains drainage products along with its commercial sewage treatment plants, pump stations, oil separators and more. DRAINAGE & WATER MANAGEMENT POLYPIPE BUILDING PRODUCTS SEWERAGE SECTOR GUIDANCE WHITE PAPER

Polypipe has produced a white paper outlining how the new Ofwat approved guidance on the planning, design and construction of foul and surface water drainage systems can be implemented by architects, designers, developers and contractors, and offering support for merchants in addressing the needs of their customers. Entitled Code for Adoption Sector Agreements, the concise paper examines the Ofwat approved Sewerage Sector Guidance (SSG), introduced in April 2020, and the two key changes that will impact how foul and surface water drainage systems are designed, specified and installed. Firstly, the SSG clarifies the standards to which all materials must comply in order to be considered adoptable, making it clear that all sewerage companies must adopt systems that include plastic pipes and fittings which are to the prescribed standards. Secondly, the guidance enables Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) to be considered part of the adoptable infrastructure for the first time. This guidance greatly increases the options available when sourcing and installing below ground drainage systems on any significant development. The Polypipe-produced document has been written by technical experts that have worked closely with industry bodies developing the new guidance and offers clear advice and support in relation to the adoption of sewerage assets.

SAFEGUARD EUROPE DESIGNING IN FLOOD RESILIENCE AND RESISTANCE With the now almost annual flood warnings, Safeguard Europe is addressing the fundamentals of flood protection with its Designing for Flood Resilience and Resistance guidance. With more than 40 years’ experience in damp-proofing and waterproofing technology, the firm has developed several flood management systems which illustrate the various mechanisms by which flood water can enter a property and how to stop it, as well as detailing the internal and external remedial works necessary for habitable reinstatement should the worst happen. Selecting the correct approach is categorised into three flood systems that employ these strategies, or a mixture of each, to anticipate every flood scenario. Within this approach, the company highlights products such as its Dryzone DampResistant Plaster, its Dryrod Damp-proofing Rods and Drybase Liquid-Applied DPM. In addition, Stormdry Masonry Protection Cream and Stormdry FD-Coat can help to limit the amount of water seeping through the walls whilst speeding up the drying time after a flood. Drybase Tanking Slurry, meanwhile, can be applied up to 0.6m to stop flood water getting into the premises and is said to be particularly suitable where low-level flooding is expected. Providing flood repairable options, the guide also considers the Dryzone Express Replastering system and Dryshield Cream which is a breathable salt and mouldresistant and water-repellent cream that goes on the walls to aid the drying out process while plasterboards are installed horizontally.

ALIAXIS DURAPIPE PVC FITTINGS Aliaxis has announced a series of design changes across a number of its Durapipe PVC-U metric fittings, which have been developed to further enhance performance. The new product designs have been implemented on the elbows, sockets and equal tees (25mm to 225mm) of its PVC-U range which now benefit from an increased wall thickness in several critical areas to offer much greater reinforcement and increased levels of durability whilst new alignment indicators help to make the installation process easier. In making these updates, the critical dimensions remain unaffected with all preexisting installation guidance and product information staying the same.

BRITISH PLASTICS FEDERATION PIPES GROUP POST-BREXIT MARKET UPDATE Reflecting on the current situation for the UK plastic pipes and fittings industry, post-Brexit, Caroline Ayres of the BPF Pipes Group said: “Our industry is continuing to supply its markets without any interruptions, whilst our members continue to operate within Covid-19 guidelines to ensure safe and secure delivery of plastic pipes and fittings to customers.” With Britain now having left the EU, BPF Pipes Group manufacturers remain committed to continuing to supply quality products to the same high standards. These incorporate third party approved products to British European Standards (BS ENs) where applicable, standards which users and specifiers are familiar with and which provide reassurance that the products are always fit for purpose. Additionally, the BSI’s membership of CEN and CENELEC is continuing beyond the EU exit transition period. It will enable the UK’s continued influence over standards produced in both CEN and CENELEC, providing additional certainty and stability to stakeholders.

PLUMBING & HEATING

Going underground Following the announcement of its new affordable homes programme last autumn, the Government has pledged to build 180,000 homes from 2021-2026. Nigel Sanger, Divisional Director Technical Support at RWC UK, discusses how leak proof plumbing products like MDPE push-fit fittings are essential to make such housebuilding projects more efficient and build a better future.

T

he UK Government’s ‘Build, Build, Build’ strategy is in full swing as we embark on the road to recovery from 2020’s global pandemic, and it is no secret that construction has been put into overdrive. As housebuilding ramps up, a key element in the process will be connecting properties up to water mains. Merchants and installers together must carefully consider how to leak proof the plumbing at this stage if we are to build back better, faster and greener. Here, underground fittings are in the spotlight, as they help prevent unexpected plumbing-related problems and homes from suffering water damage, while saving consumers’ money and conserving water. Robust underground pipework Installing underground pipes can be tricky and frustrating, as they are assembled in a confined workspace and muddy conditions. Furthermore, incorrectly fitted underground

38 PBM APRIL 2021

pipes can cause catastrophic effects months down the line. This includes huge costs to customers and the environment, as thousands of gallons of water could potentially end up being wasted through leaks, as well as time and money to installers and developers to rectify the problem. Indeed, WaterSafe highlights that “about a quarter of leaks are found in the underground pipes which connect properties to water mains.” (see www.rdr.link/ma023) To ensure a solid foundation within the building process, reliable and robust products must be used with underground

pipework. MDPE (medium-density polyethylene) fittings, sometimes known as ‘black and blue’ fittings, are specifically designed to cope with a rough underground life. Built with a strong and heavy-duty material, push-fit MDPE fittings can speed up installation of the mains water supply into a house, alongside future-proofing the system for years to come. Leak proof solutions Two of the biggest issues when plumbing underground pipework are that trenches are muddy, and abrasive contaminants like stones or other debris could easily damage the fitting

“With a directive from the UK Government to build faster, build greener and build better houses, merchants must be in position to offer products that are reliable, quick, and easy to install.” www.professionalbuildersmerchant.co.uk

or pipework. When weather conditions are poor and visibility is reduced, it is even more difficult for installers to determine if a secure, water-tight seal has been made, particularly if using fittings with compression connections. Compression fittings can also become loose over time, which then causes leaks that are hard to rectify. These risks are significantly reduced with push-fit MDPE fittings, such as those in the JG Speedfit range. These fittings have a built-in seal, and the connection is made by simply pushing the pipe into it. This diminishes the chance of exposing the interior of the pipework to contamination. Typically, to connect a compression tee, three nuts, three seals, and three inserts are needed which must be assembled onto the pipe piece by piece. Connecting these

components in muddy trenches can take time, whereas push-fit technology makes these jobs a lot easier, faster and more reliable. The MDPE push-fit fittings also overcome the issue presented by compression fittings when they need to be rotated once laid into the ground to create a secure connection. JG Speedfit’s range of MDPE fittings is manufactured to strict British standards and is WRAS approved, which guarantees that the fittings are tested and built to the highest quality. Like other JG Speedfit products, no specialist tools are required, making them quick and easy to fit in tight and awkward spaces with poor visibility. The fittings are fully demountable, by removing the collet cover and pushing down on the collet itself. The stainless-steel grab ring offers a weather resistant seal, and the one-year guarantee gives additional piece of mind.

Role of the merchants It’s hard to imagine, but pipes are often wrongly connected or, in some situations, not connected at all. And water mains leaks are never good news for all parties, especially if underground. With a directive from the UK Government to build faster, build greener and build better houses, merchants must be in position to offer products that are reliable, quick, and easy to install. And here, push-fit MDPE fittings ensure leak proof connections are made every time and provide peace of mind, while helping to conserve water for years to come.

PLUMBING & HEATING

Pump specialist Stuart Turner has launched its new Showermate range of bathroom and shower pumps, adding more power to deliver improved shower performance. PBM reports.

Power boost P

reviously consisting of Showermate, Showermate ECO and Showermate TP, Stuart Turner has rationalised its range with the unveiling of a ‘new look’ Showermate branded range of shower pumps. “Our new Showermate range marks a great start to 2021,” explains National Training Manager Richard Ballard. “The previous range had grown over several years and it was time to bring them all together under one platform. “Our Engineering Team has worked hard to make subtle improvements to what was already a high-quality series and have delivered an easy to install product fit for new installations or replacement of both Stuart Turner and other manufacturers’ products’.” The new design is said to come with “all the quality and reliability associated with Stuart Turner” and offers a high performing, high quality shower pump that is available in three performance options — 1.5, 2.0 and 2.6 bar. With universal or standard and twin or single models to

choose from, bathroom designers and installers “can specify with confidence” across a wide range of applications. As with all Stuart Turner products, Showermate is designed to be simple to install and is classified as ‘Quiet Operation’ with anti-vibration feet included in the design to reduce noise transmission further. The pumps are continuously rated, feature automatic switching and come with flexible 15 x 205mm, push-fit anti-vibration hoses with ¾ BSP threaded connection to the pump. The Showermate range is said to complement the existing and well-established range of Monsoon pumps, giving a greater selection for installers and homeowners alike, and the products carry a three year warranty and also benefit from the support offered by the firm’s TechAssist Team. Furthermore, the pumps are also eligible for the Stuart Turner Installer Loyalty Club which offers trade professionals access to exclusive promotions and incentives.

“Our Engineering Team has worked hard to make subtle improvements to what was already a high-quality series and have delivered an easy to install product fit for new installations or replacement of both Stuart Turner and other manufacturers’ products.” 40 PBM APRIL 2021

Stuart Turner has also further extended its Aquaboost range of cold-water pressure and flow boosting solutions for multiple applications with the new iBolt and iMatic intelligent variable speed boosting solutions. For example, available as a standalone single pump or single and twin booster sets, the Aquaboost iBolt range of variable speed booster pumps and pump sets feature horizontal multistage pumps controlled by air-cooled variable speed frequency inverters mounted directly on the pump motor which are designed to deliver a constant water pressure supply where flow demand varies. Described as high performing yet intuitive to commission, the pumps deliver flow rates from 5m³/hour to 15m³/hour and head pressures up to 9.0 bar depending on the chosen variant within the range. With an added buffer of pressurised cold water to supplement pressure and flow, Aquaboost iBolt Booster Sets are supplied with a WRAS-approved 8 or 24 litre pressure vessel, combined with either a single or twin pump set mounted on a powder coated base plate for ease of installation. Twin booster sets offer up to 15 m³/hour per pump with heads up to 7.1 bar.

Salamander Pumps has announced another record year of sales of its bestselling CT Xtra shower pump range over the last year, with sales of the range increasing by more than 30% over the last 12 months. The compact pumps are said to offer an easy installation process and feature a three-year warranty. The range is also designed to provide a quiet and effective solution for boosting water performance, with the full portfolio awarded the Noise Abatement Society’s Quiet Mark, with independent testing at the University of Salford confirming that CT Xtra pumps are amongst the quietest available. Chris Vallance, Sales Director at Salamander Pumps, said: “We designed this range to provide an affordable and effective solution to boosting water performance, and the continued increase in sales every year clearly demonstrates the popularity of the products amongst the trade. “We also know from customer feedback how important it is for these types of products to be easily accessible, and so we’ve placed great focus on ensuring the CT Xtra pumps are readily available at any plumbing merchant.”

NEOPERL FLOW REGULATORS Manufactured in the UK, Neoperl produces flow regulators in hundreds of sizes that can now be retrofitted to taps and showers throughout the home. And regardless of the prevalent water pressure, a flow regulator maintains a consistent water stream at the chosen flow rate. Whilst most taps will already include a flow control device at the end of the spout, it’s often only when in situ that one can identify whether the flow is too strong. Now the incumbent device can be easily removed and replaced with one that reduces the flow to a comfortable level. Similarly with showers, a valve shower often delivers far too much water and even a slight reduction adds up to a substantial water saving over the year.

HEAT PUMP ASSOCIATION MARKET GROWTH The Heat Pump Association, which represents around 95% of the heat pump manufacturing market share, has surveyed its members to estimate the supply of heat pumps in 2021. Its findings have revealed that manufacturers have placed orders with their supply chains to deliver a total of 67,000 units in 2021 — and this equates to a near doubling of the number of heat pumps on shelves and in warehouses ready for installers to meet the growing consumer demand. This boost in predicted sales follows on from the Prime Minister’s announcement last year of a 10 Point Plan for a green industrial revolution, which set out ambitions to roll out 600,000 heat pumps into homes per year by 2028. The growth also closely aligns with the HPA’s own roadmap to net zero, which called for 72,000 heat pump installations this year.

POINT OF SALE

Taking a stand The issue of plastic waste is high on the agenda and the problem is said to be especially acute in construction, accounting for 25% of the sector’s total waste and with as many as 150 million used plastic sealant & adhesive cartridges sent to landfill each year. Continuing its drive towards more eco-friendly aluminium foil ‘sausage’ packaging, Tembé DIY & Building Products is now embarking on a huge marketing campaign and rolling out additional in-store support to reinforce the need for change. PBM reports.

U

nder its Hippo brand of sealants and adhesives, Tembé DIY & Building Products has declared a “war on waste” in the construction sector, and is showcasing the products in its more sustainably-packaged ‘Eco-Pac’ range in what has been described as the company’s biggest ever marketing campaign. Set to encompass national TV and radio advertising, perimeter branding during Premier League and Championship football matches, social media, trade press coverage and striking new point of sale stands, the campaign is the next step in its ongoing

46 PBM APRIL 2021

mission to replace single use plastic cartridges with the more environmentallyfriendly aluminium foil alternative. The foil project first began in late 2018 / early 2019, and the aluminium foil sausages are said to contain less than 1% plastic and create 96% less waste than the plastic cartridges they replace. Indeed, the company has “invested heavily” to back a format it describes as being better both “environmentally and economically” to move users away from single use plastics and “change the market forever”. It now offers a range of 14 foils for all jobs within the adhesive, filler and sealant categories across the performance levels of “good, better and best” through products such as its high-performance, multi-purpose premium hybrid sealant and adhesive, Hippo Pro3. The foils themselves offer 400ml for the same price as a 290ml cartridge and can even be removed from the gun and reused again in the future. And once removed, it is clearly visible how much sealant remains in the foil, unlike the ‘traditional’ cartridge and plunger system.

Its high-profile multi-channel advertising campaign is now underway, and the company is urging merchants to “order their stock now and get ready for the surge in demand”. Supporting the cross platform promotion, the company has also produced new-look display stands to highlight the “war on construction waste” messaging inbranch whilst also making clear that the foils contain the “same great products with a more eco-friendly solution”. All of the products in the range are supplied in cardboard cut cases for easy shelf display or in the freestanding units, whilst Tembé is also running a special promotional offer through stockists to give their customers a free aluminium barrelled gun for the foils when they spend £20 or more on Hippo Eco-Pacs. ■ For more information on Tembé’s range of sealants, adhesives and fillers in sustainable Eco-Pac aluminium foil packaging, enter the shortcode www.rdr.link/ma044 to view the 2021 product catalogue.

With Paul Davies

LEAKY DEFENCE Social media was awash with rumour of an injury to Aston Villa playmaker Jack Grealish ahead of the Villans’ match against Leicester recently. Nothing particularly newsworthy about that, you might think, as the hours before the transfer deadline are always filled with speculation, misinformation and pure guesswork. However, the story grew legs when it emerged that the source of the injury news may very well have been Grealish’s own teammates who, apparently, had been transferring the Villa captain out of their own FPL teams! A ‘furious’ Dean Smith vowed to investigate and was even said to have banned his squad from playing the game to prevent such potentially vital info from leeching out. It was even suggested that a Norwegian who goes by the Twitter name of @FPLInsider was behind the leaks, as he has developed a bot which tracks the transfer activity of fantasy football accounts run by professional players and club staff! Apparently, he got the idea upon hearing that Liverpool's Andy Robertson had transferred teammate Sadio Mane out of his team at the start of the year and so he set about creating a programme to track such insider activity! A number of top drawer professionals play FPL and only a few weeks before ‘Grealishgate’, Patrick Bamford bemoaned the fact he hadn’t captained himself after scoring one and assisting two in Leeds’ win over Leicester! Legendary renegade Nicholas Bendtner is seemingly rather better at the game, and is sitting pretty in the upper echelons of the overall league! The managers don’t appear to be enjoying things quite so much. As well as Dean Smith’s fury, Pep Guardiola described the unforeseen consequences of Premier League players inadvertently leaking team news as “incredibly unethical and unprofessional”. We can only assume Raheem Sterling was gently trolling his manager with the pictured tweet after returning a meagre two points across a much-hyped double gameweek…!

LOOKALIKE CORNER

SAINT & GRIEVING

Am I the only one that has recently clocked that Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez is an absolute dead ringer for the comedian Russell Kane? A more beefed up version, I grant you, but I think the resemblance is uncanny! Jordan Pickford looks exactly like one of my colleagues, but I accept that may not have broad appeal. I can however highly recommend Googling ‘Premier League lookalikes’ as there are a few belters out there. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Andy Serkis is surprisingly good, and Olivier Giroud is actually the spit of Errol Flynn, but Arsene Wenger and Blanche from Corrie genuinely made me laugh out loud! Please feel free to tweet any doppelganger delights to @PBMmagazine!

I have to put down a couple of words to mark the sad passing of Liverpool legend, Ian St. John. Whilst his illustrious playing career was before my time, I’ve got so many fond memories of Saint & Greavsie on a Saturday lunchtime. Some fantastic clips have been doing the rounds to celebrate his hugely successful twin careers and it is well worth reminding yourselves of his stunning header which helped Liverpool win the 1965 FA Cup and, well, pretty much anything from Saint & Greavsie is just fantastic!
