Welcome to 2022 As we slowly emerge from the pandemic, hopeful we will consign lockdowns and restrictions to history, few would have forecast its impact on kitchen and bathroom retail. Even as little as 12 months’ ago, when the UK was in its third lockdown, accomplished kbb retailers voiced concerns over the prospect of losing sales to online, the pipeline of future sales orders when showrooms were closed, and the start of stock shortages.

Who would have dared to forecast that 2021 would actually be one of the most lucrative times for many independent kitchen and bathroom retailers? In fact, Bill Miller, managing director of the KBBG, recently reported most of its retail members had an excellent year, with high levels of enquiries and orders.

Looking forward then, there is UK trade show kbb Birmingham which will bring the industry together and is long awaited. Showcasing the latest trends and innovations for showrooms and their customers, the event will allow retailers to see and touch product, network and do business in person. And there remains plenty of business, with still no sign of an imminent slowdown, as consumers unable to renovate due to building material shortages of last year have rolled their project forward.

Of course, this high level of demand continues to bring its own challenges with longer lead times, pressure on cash flow and all-

in-one orders replaced by partial just in time deliveries. But retailers have coped grappling with the flurry of sales – seeking designers and installers to fulfil projects. It has even seen some employ their own fitting teams, to reduce reliance on the availability of subcontract joiners and plumbers.

But kitchen and bathroom retailers may have to demonstrate their agility again, as the second half of 2022 could paint a very different picture.

Industry experts predict a softening in sales with escalating costs and disposable household income stretched to include holidays. Will it be a relief for sales to slow to pre-COVID trading, as balance is restored to the bathroom or kitchen industry? Or having now geared up for larger volumes of business, will kbb retailers have to consider how they can attract and maintain the same level of orders?

If the last two years has taught us anything, while the patterns of business have changed, kbb retailers will adapt to the market.

Accomplished retailers will seek ever more creative solutions to reach their goals and will already be making them happen.

KBN LIKES ✔ …Sigma 3 has recently invested £20million into production to increase its manufacturing capacity over the next three years.

KBN DISLIKES ✖ … the dip in kitchen and bathroom merchant sales figures in October from the previous month, as reported in the recent BMBI Index.

British kitchen company outlines investment plan

IN BRIEF ■ The Kitchen, Bedroom, Bathroom Specialists Association (Kbsa) has announced the winners of its Designer Awards. Matthew Grantham, director of Kreativ Kitchens, won the Kitchen Designer of the Year (up to £25k), while Diane Berry, owner of Diane Berry Kitchens, scooped Kitchen Designer (£2550k) and Kitchen Designer (over £50k). Bathroom Designer of the Year was presented to director of Kutchenhaus Stamford, Stuart Hendry, Charlotte Jewkes won the Young Designer of the Year, and Concept Designer of the Year was presented to Adam Bomok of Cu Cucine. Sigma 3 invests £20million in manufacturing British kitchen manufacturer and parent company of Masterclass Kitchens, Sigma 3 Kitchens, has announced £20million investment plans, following a successful trading year and growing demand.

The company has outlined its investment plans to increase its manufacturing capacity over the next three years.

The expansion will see the largest investment in buildings, plant and infrastructure in Sigma 3’s history.

Sigma 3 Kitchens chairman and CEO Brian Lakin explained how it will invest in the business: “The expansion will be broadly split into two areas.

“Firstly, the next one to three years will see a major project to

increase the capacity and efficiency of our Llantrisant plant.

“This involves a factory extension that will significantly increase our manufacturing footprint, as well as major investments in plant, systems and people.”

“Secondly, a new facility that has been purchased will be commissioned in Bridgend.

“This will allow us to not only add production capacity, but also enable specialised production, which will improve overall efficiency.

“The new facility will add 130,000 sq ft of production and office capacity and will again result in major investments in new equipment, systems and people.”

The expansion will almost triple the existing footprint in terms of

production and office space.

It will see investment in new buildings, expansion of existing buildings, automation, new business systems, training and organisational infrastructure.

The existing workforce at Llantrisant will be expanded and a recruitment and training project will commence, to provide the skilled workforce required for the new manufacturing facility in Bridgend.

Merchant negotiating acquisition of Ideal Bathrooms

Wolseley UK acquires Neville Lumb Wolseley UK has entered into binding agreements with SaintGobain for the acquisition of Neville Lumb, DHS and Bassetts.

Separately, Wolseley UK has entered into exclusive negotiations for the acquisition of Ideal Bathrooms.

It is expected the acquisition of the plumbing and heating focussed businesses will be completed in the first half of 2022.

According to Wolseley UK, the outlets will operate as normal and

there will be no change for customers.

Together the four brands represent around 485 employees and in 2020 generated a turnover of approximately €130m.

Managing director for Wolseley Plumbing and Heating Keith Dorling commented: “Business acquisition is a key aspect of our ambitious growth strategy.

“The deal with Saint-Gobain to acquire Neville Lumb, DHS and Bassetts will strengthen our ability

to provide the local, personal service and expertise for which we’re renowned.”

Scandinavian manufacturer buys British brand

Svedbergs acquires Roper Rhodes Scandinavian bathroom brand Svedbergs Group has acquired 100% shareholding of Bath-based Roper Rhodes.

Established by Brian Roper in 1979, the family company still had sons Mark and Paul Roper as majority shareholders but they will now leave the business with immediate effect.

Current managing director Leigh Leather will report directly into Svedberg Group CEO Per-Arne Andersson, and fellow directors Will Steele, Simon Taylor and Chris Vallance will all remain on the Roper Rhodes operational board.

Svedberg Group targeted Roper Rhodes because the company fits

with one of its key strategic objectives, which is to acquire market-leading brands in the bathroom sector in key European markets.

They identified Roper Rhodes with its three brands – Roper Rhodes, Tavistock & R2 – as a strategic fit with the company that sells bathroom products in the Nordic region.

Leigh Leather, managing director of Roper Rhodes, commented: “I am personally very excited for the future of our business and think this step offers strong continuity for both our employees and customers alike”.

Svedbergs Group supplies furniture, shower enclosures,

bathtubs, heated towel rails, taps, showers, sanitaryware and bathroom accessories.

Most of its product ranges are designed and manufactured in the Group’s factories in Dalstorp and Laholm and sold under three brands; Svedbergs, Macro Design and Cassøe.

The parent company Svedbergs i Dalstorp AB was started in 1920 manufacturing tin and in 1962 switched to manufacturing

bathroom cabinets.

Headquartered in Dalstorp Sweden, Svedbergs i Dalstorp AB has been listed on the Swedish stock exchange since 1997.

President and CEO of Svedbergs Group Per-Arne Andersson commented: “Together with the experienced Roper Rhodes management team we are looking forward to growth in the British market, which provides clear potential going forward.”

Finance and service director of bathroom manufacturer Roca UK Rashpal Sidhu will succeed Alan Dodds as managing director from April 2022.

Following 22 years of leading the Roca Group in the UK and Ireland, Dodds will step down as managing director from April 4 2022 but will be closely involved with the business as chairman.

Sidhu has over 15 years of experience on the Roca senior management team, driving the strategic direction of the business and overseeing the company’s

finance, customer service and warehouse operations.

Commenting on his appointment Rashpal Sidhu said: “I am hugely looking forward to taking on my new role and maximising the opportunities ahead for the Roca brand.

“2021 will be a record year for the Roca Group in the UK and we have exciting plans for growth in 2022.”

Dominic Worsley has been appointed managing director of appliance brand CDA, joining the company from the Magnum Brands Group where he was global sales and marketing director.

Prior to this, he spent nine years with Miele, where he was marketing and retail sales director before being promoted to the role of global marketing director.

In addition, Worsley has spent seven years as sales director for the UK and ROI with small appliance specialist Groupe SEB whose brands include Tefal,

Moulinex, Rowenta and Krups.

Dominic Worsley said: “It’s an exciting time to be joining CDA. “It’s a brand with strong potential and driven by a committed, passionate and ambitious team.

“Couple this with some inspiring new products and we’re looking forward to further strengthening our retail and trade partnerships and a dynamic future together”.

Caple unveils solus Caple Studios initiative Kitchen supplier Caple has created a UK showroom at its Avonmouth, Bristol headquarters, to introduce an initiative called Caple Studios.

Measuring 1,200sqft, the showroom features furniture, appliances, sinks and taps, from Caple’s collections and complements the Caple Experience Centre.

The Caple Studios concept creates a move into the consumer market, with more showrooms to follow, in a series of strategic high street locations.

These will be open to the end user with kitchen designers to help homeowners create a Caple kitchen.

Managing director Danny Lay explained how he formulated this concept during the first lockdown:

“Like many suppliers, I started to think how we could ‘pivot’ our company and look for new routes to market.

“As we are the only business in the UK to offer appliances, sinks, taps and kitchen furniture under the Caple brand, it made sense to approach a number of our existing

customers with a solus arrangement.

“This way, they benefit from one supplier with all of the advantages that it brings.”

Lay added: “The retailers we have approached already have an intimate knowledge of our team, including sales, marketing and distribution, with the ability to make greater margins by channelling more business through one supplier.

“We can even protect their business by offering a solus geographical area.”

Each Caple Studio will be designed and created to cater for clientele in the designated area, so the retailer can benefit from a bespoke showroom to suit their customers’ needs.

Kbb sales down on October 2019 but up on 2020

kitchen and bathroom merchant sales dip Despite a dip on September’s sales, the Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) reports total value sales in October 2021 were up year-on-year.

Total value sales were 11.1% higher in October 2021, compared to the same month in 2020, despite one less trading day this year.

Timber & Joinery Products continued to top the list with a growth of 28.3% but Kitchens & Bathrooms sales also increased by 4.7% and Plumbing, Heating & Electrical by 4.0%.

Like-for-like sales, which take trading day differences into account, were up 16.4% year-on-year.

It follows on from kitchens and bathrooms reaching its highest ever BMBI sales in Q3 2021.

Compared to October 2019, a pre-pandemic year, total merchant value sales were up 11.3% October 2021, with two less trading days.

Four categories sold more, with overall growth driven primarily by Timber & Joinery Products, which was up 34.7% and Landscaping with an increase of 27.6%.

However, Kitchens & Bathrooms sales were slightly down on October 2019, with a decrease of 2.1%.

Total value sales in the three

months August to October 2021 were up 16.1% on the same period in 2020.

Out of 12 categories, 11 sold more including Timber & Joinery Products up 38.9%, Kitchens & Bathrooms which had grown by 9.2% and an increase in Plumbing Heating & Electrical of 9.1%.

Position filled Appointments and promotions across the industry

Sarah Stepney has been appointed as trade marketing executive for UK manufacturer Kudos Shower Products. Based at its recently opened warehouse and training facility in Sandbach, she’ll be reporting to sales and marketing director, Nick Graville. Stepney started working for Kudos after six years working as a marketing manager at Ryman, a stationer with 200 stores nationwide, bringing lots of experience in retail supply to the team.

Kitchen and bathroom furniture manufacturer Mereway has recently announced the appointment of Stace Alibone as national sales manager. He joins the Birmingham-based company from Uform where he has worked for the last 12 years, most recently as national sales manager. Prior to working at Uform, Alibone was area sales manager of Huppe and before that was key account manager for Qualceram Shires.

AQUALISA Shower manufacturer Aqualisa has appointed Joe Brawn as head of product management, leading product strategy and overseeing the introduction of new products to the UK and international markets. Brawn leads a team of six product managers and executives. He joins Aqualisa from kitchenware company DKB Household, where he headed up global product management of the Cole & Mason brand.

Ceramique Internationale has expanded its team with the appointment of Francesca Cornforth as manager for its Leeds-based Tiles and Mosaics showroom. She will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the 4500 sq ft showroom, providing advice and support to customers in person, on-line and over the phone.

Cornforth has joined the company from Porcelanosa in Leeds where she was assistant manager.

Roper Rhodes has appointed Chris Vallance as group sales director, following Leigh Leather taking on the managing director role at the end of last year.

Vallance has spent over 30 years in the bathroom industry, 20 of which were with Mira Showers. He was national sales manager of Mira before joining Salamander pumps as sales and marketing director where he helped to more than double the turnover and deliver a four-fold increase in profits.

Worktop manufacturer Caesarstone has appointed Gail Rees as marketing manager, overseeing advertising, PR, social media channels and event management. She has 10 years of experience across multiple sectors such as retail, tourism and hospital, in both B2B and B2C marketing. Rees joins the company from Service Management Group, an experience management agency.

LochAnna Kitchens has welcomed Jenna McKidd as regional sales manager, covering Yorkshire, the North East, and Scotland. She brings a breadth of knowledge to the role, having worked for six years in the kitchen industry, starting as a sales executive. In 2017, McKidd opened and ran a purpose-built kitchen showroom and has, most recently, worked with Scottish kitchen manufacturer Ashley Ann as a kitchen designer.

UK showering brand Merlyn has appointed John Stacey as regional sales manager for the North East and West Yorkshire. He has joined the team from bathroom distributor Frontline Bathrooms, bringing with him a wealth of experience across the bathroom sector. In his new position, Stacey will be responsible for managing and growing the retail and merchant customers in the region.

Kbb Birmingham 2022 In Part one we offer a curated selection of exhibitors set to appear at the UK’s largest show for the bathroom and kitchen industry.

Expecting more than 15,000 visitors, Kbb Birmingham is set to open its doors at the NEC in Birmingham from March 6-9. The exhibition spans 26 product categories, from home appliances and kitchen furniture through to baths, brassware and shower toilets, and will bring brands from around the world under one roof. Already confirmed to exhibit at Kbb Birmingham 2022, visitors will be able to view stands by Electrolux, Davroc, Caple, Quooker and Caesarstone.

In addition, visitors will be able to see and then vote for their favourite product in the Innovation Awards. Recognising “creative and ground-breaking” solutions, this year will include an award for sustainability to acknowledge the work brands are doing to deliver environmentally-conscious solutions.

The biennial show not only allows designers, retailers and specifiers to view and source the latest products but also allows visitors to make inperson connections and network with new and existing business acquaintances. And with visitors from residential, retail and contract sectors over the four days, it will see a welcome return to faceto-face meetings for the enitre kbb community.

Of course, all of this will be held within

guidelines so visitors can do business safely and with confidence. It sees all aisles widened to 4m across the show floor to allow for physical distancing, should this be recommended by local government at the time of the show. Visitor and exhibitor paper badges will be replaced by digital versions that can be accessed on any smart phone.

Kbb Birmingham will be a UK debut for the Bora X Bo – a steamer and oven in one appliance, and will be joined by the Multi-Drawer for reheating or defrosting food. Joining these will be the Bora S Pure Cooktop with integrated extractor, which measures 600mm, boasts four zones and an air inlet in a choice of six colours.

Bora S Pure also boasts a heat retention function, a child proofing feature and automatic heat up. Live cookery demonstrations will also take place on the stand each day, throughout the show.

The Hettich AvanTech YOU drawer system earned the 2021 Interzum Award in the “High Product Quality” category for outstanding design merit. As many have started the New Year working from home, once again the focus of design is upon the increasing number of roles which take place in the kitchen. There is a greater emphasis on use and segmentation of space, whether fully open plan or broken plan. Therefore now, more than ever, designers will need to carefully consider the specification. It will see increased emphasis on health and hygiene and acoustics with quieter appliances, as the kitchen is used as a home office.

Now a seamless part of ground floor living, the kitchen must also be able to transform from a work space during the day to an evening chill out zone. In fact, it could be argued the greatest challenge for designers will be creating a space that no longer resembles a kitchen, paying attention to concealing appliances to create luxe interiors.

Of course, with COP 26 having been such a focus of 2021, kitchen designers may also naturally steer towards selecting more environmentally conscious products. Appliances with low energy ratings, worktops with a greater use of recycled materials and the recommendation of selling on the kitchen being replaced may become second nature.

SEGMENTING SPACE First the emphasis was on open plan but as home working has played a greater role in all our lives, broken plan has increasingly come to the fore to create a sense of privacy. Category manager of LochAnna Kitchens Sinead Trainor comments: “As families spend more time at home, not just for leisure and down-time but also for work, broken plan will likely overtake open plan. Broken plan keeps the open, spacious feel of an open plan design, but allows for smaller private and quiet areas to work in, whilst still feeling connected to the family.”

It could see a greater use of storage, to stow foods, work and also to conceal appliances so the kitchen can easily transform from office space through to an area of relaxation. Head of UK operations at Rotpunkt Matt Philipps adds: “Modular furniture is adding extra flexibility to post-pandemic interiors with a wide range of top units and cabinets complementing the highly personalised, allinclusive rest, work and play area which has developed around the traditional cook zone.”

He says: “Stand out schemes will be space

sensitive with a wealth of open and closed shelving, decorative lighting, natural finishes and designer details that promote order in both the kitchen, living and utility space.”

Arguably one of the greatest legacies from the pandemic will be the boom in digitalisation and increased use of technology in the home. Marketing manager of Kongistone Joanne Bull reports: “Our large, bespoke kitchen islands are increasingly being specified with pop-up sockets and rebate channels for cables.” Expect to see home assistants and Artificial Intelligence play a greater role in kitchen specification from touch-free lighting through to connected appliances that can calculate the best way to wash clothes or cook meals to enhance convenience for the user and optimise resources. Not only that, appliances can also continue to learn from the habits of the user and the environmental conditions. Product manager -built-in cooking Chris Grundy comments: “Further integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including voice-assisted models and app-controlled products is increasingly becoming the norm in the kitchen. We have seen connected appliances really established themselves in the laundry sector in recent years and predict the focus to move more towards built-in cooking appliances as their benefits are more widely understood and appreciated.”

The pandemic continues to provide a laser focus on hygiene in the kitchen. It has seen the introduction of reduced contact or touchfree taps used in commercial bathrooms now enter the kitchen. Leader category UK, LIXIL EMENA, Elina Enqvist-Twomey explains: “At a time when the pandemic has pushed the everyday necessity of handwashing into the spotlight, it is not surprising that seeking to invest in solutions that optimise hygiene remains a priority throughout the home. In response to this increasing demand there has been a surge in hygiene-focused premium products such as sensor-activated and lever-free taps.”

In addition, home appliances also offer consumers disinfection programmes to help improve hygiene levels in the home. Retail sales director of Fisher & Paykel Mark Young comments: “At Fisher & Paykel, we predict there will be a high demand for self-cleaning appliances such as our pyrolytic ovens, as well as appliances that kill bacteria such as the DishDrawer, and our washing machines which are impregnated with microbials.”

TACTILE TIMBER Balancing the need for a modern, functional cooking area and holistic living space, kitchens have embraced tactile materials, such as timbers. Managing director of Daval furniture Simon Bodsworth comments: “Timber will be a go-to product both providing traditional grounding for modern in-frame kitchens, as well as a tactile and organic contrast to pared back linear styes which nod to Scandinavian and eco-industrial influences. I see two key looks dominating the kitchen market next year – Refined Country, inspired by the timeless beauty of painted Shaker furniture and Natural Renewal, in which recycled materials and tactile surface treatments and finishes take precedence.”

SUSTAINABILITY Alongside protecting the individual, there has been a greater focus on the environment, with the underlying ‘nature is healing’ narrative of the lockdowns and more recently COP26. It has seen the greater use of recycled material in furniture, worktops and appliances, which have also reduced energy and water use.

Marketing and retail director at Symphony Simon Collyns asserts: “We have seen greater interest in our environmental product credentials such as our timber-based materials, which are all FSC certified, meaning they are from responsibly resourced woodlands.” And marketing manager at Cosentino UK Laura Davie agrees consumers are being steered by sustainability, concluding: “With the world continuing to combat climate change and environmental concerns, consumers are ultimately letting sustainability guide their purchase decisions and are more dedicated than ever to selecting the most eco-friendly products possible, including kitchen surfaces. From efficiently managing energy and water throughout the production process, to carbon neutrality and recycled product composition, homeowners are relying on the brands they use throughout their home to demonstrate sustainable practices.”

Timber has come to the fore in contemporary kitchen interiors, as consumers seek the warmth, reassurance and authenticity of wood.

Wood has long been a preserve of the classical kitchen providing timeless appeal; however, it is now making headway in more contemporary schemes. Supplementing the stark simplicity of minimalist door fronts, timber or wood effects offer added warmth and texture for a cosier living space and provide a grounding from nature. National sales manager UK for Keller Kitchens Tim Spann comments: “There has been a trend towards woods and faux woods in more contemporary kitchen styling, which has added to already strong sales in more traditional kitchens.” And, he explains, this has filtered down the market: “There is growing demand for a natural look in market segments a little lower down the price spectrum than the normal higher ground for such products.”

Creating connections Wood enables a greater connection in kitchen architecture, embracing the external environment, as commercial director of Brandt Design Julia Steadman comments: “The rise of indoor/outdoor living has renewed interest in natural materials and biophilic design as homeowners look to create unique family rooms which also extend to the garden space via a patio.” It also helps bring together internal spaces, creating a holistic living environment, as Steadman continues: “Timber can also be a complementary material for modern fitted kitchens in period conversions, helping to marry architectural details with the dark jewel tones of fashionable dark painted kitchens.”

Modern material Although a traditional material, woods are now being used in new and inventive ways, with a variety of species, graining and textures to provide a wide choice of aesthetics. Director at Drew Forsyth George Forsyth explains: “Wood works on so many levels – from the raw, untreated timbers seen so often in industrialstyle kitchens, to the pale wood of the Scandi movement and the classic country-style knotty timber for a rustic look.”

However, industry experts believe there is a move towards richer woods for luxe finishes.

Managing director of Daval Simon Bodsworth points out: “The trends for rich, dark colours is encouraging designers to explore the different types of wood species available, with browns and blacks being introduced through rustic wood veneers, charred timber effects and matt black accessories.” He continues: “We are finding there is increasing sophistication in finishes which nod to an industrial look such as charred Japanese wood effects with a metallic tinge and character oak which recreates the look of distressed wooden planks.”

Area sales manager for Pronorm Chris Cuthill agrees on the trend for richer tones but says it is being led by Walnut: “We have seen a significant move towards Walnut recently, which has led our product development team to bring two very rich veneers into our portfolio. We are seeing dark and moody woodgrains bring strongly favoured by retailers at the design and specify stage.”

While timber choice may vary from client to client and project to project, Julia Steadman says it’s smaller details such as grain which can make a difference. “When chosen with care, I feel that graining can be a highly distinctive designer detail both in minimal contemporary kitchens and when character graining is visible under a painted kitchen door for an extra luxe textural feel.”

Mix and match The wide choice of wood and its inherent ability to mix and match with materials, has seen it become part of eclectic and personalised interiors. Head of UK operations at Rotpunkt UK Matt Phillips says it can be used effectively with colour, commenting: “Well-balanced contrasts of low-key block colours and natural wood accents are inspiring a fresh approach to user-friendly working spaces, which are designed to balance the complex needs of a modern household.” Julia Steadman of Brandt Design says anything goes when using wood, and says it can be used alongside colour or contrasting species: “We have used veneers as accents on island units and breakfast areas to contrast with fashionable pale grey units as well as making a feature of a giant timber gale end in a family kitchen. Mixing different woods, such as Walnut with Pale Oak, is an excellent way to make a space feel even more distinctive, helping to zone and define the kitchen living space, as well as adding personality.”

Seeking sustainability Interestingly, the use of timber or wood effect in contemporary kitchens seems to be more than a passing trend. Buoyed by a post-pandemic landscape, consumers now seek authenticity in materials and home design that is sympathetic

Market leader for trends, styles and colours at Schmidt Maryline Stoekel agrees, saying it’s about going back to basics: “There is a growing trend from consumers for more eco-responsible materials.” Matt Phillips of Rotpunkt UK concurs and points out the advantage for the kbb industry: “Eco-credentials are a growing concern for homeowners, and I think that if the building and interiors industry invests in more sustainable processes, it will make a huge difference to future generations as

well as generate a better bottom line.”

In fact, Simon Bodsworth of Daval believes sustainability will form an integral part of interior aesthetics, as he concludes: “I see two key looks dominating the kitchen market going forwards – Refined Country, inspired by the timeless beauty of painted Shaker-inspired furniture and Natural Renewal, in which recycled materials and tactile surface treatments and finishes take precedence. Both will be underpinned by the beauty of wood and wood effects.”

Bathroom trends 2022 COVID created a spike in home improvement sales, but also left a legacy to soothe the physique, psyche and soul, protecting the individual and the environment. Together with COP 26 it has seen a laser-focus on the need to protect health and natural resources.

For the bathroom designer, it provides an additional challenge to balance the consumerism of refurbishing spaces with an understanding of using resources efficiently.

And, of course, the need to create an environmentally-conscious room must be a design consideration not a compromise.

New materials and technologies can help make a project more sustainable, and these can also provide an added level of protection with enhanced hygiene measures. Unsurprisingly the need to protect heakth is key. But it is the inherent skills of the designer that can bring these elements together to create the aesthetics of a spa-like space to fulfil the needs and desires of a homeowner. Here are five top trends influencing bathroom design.

SUSTAINABLE With the UK Government enshrining in law a target to reduce carbon emissions by 78% by 2035, it’s no surprise manufacturers are adapting production and products to create more eco-friendly homes. Managing director of BC Designs Darren Allison comments: “It is fair to say kbb manufacturers have a responsibility to provide a range of products that will match

the wants of ever-growing environmentallyconscious consumers.” And Sven Resinghoff agrees, pointing out: “There seems to be a desire to buy better and to buy in a more considered way. How a product is made and used, and the resources used to make it are an important part of that story.” Alongside showers and brassware that use water more efficienctly, manufacturers have created stronger ceramics meaning they use less material. General manager of Toto UK Hiroyuki Higashimoto explains: “Toto has developed a unique material – Linearceram – an exceptionally fine and durable ceramic that has the same stability using less materials.”

2 COLOURFUL As the pandemic continues to force us to spend more time at home, there is an ever greater focus on the bathroom to become an escape from the outside world. In doing so, the space is embracing the warm and inviting aesthetics of luxury spas. Sven Rensinghoff of Bette comments: “We are seeing more customers adding colour through the products to help create a cosy and relaxing space.”

Roman is extending the finishes of its shower enclosures profiles up to 11 finishes, citing the emergence of Matt White for 2022. While, 2021 saw the use of earthy tones, director of Waters Baths of Ashbourne Lee Frost comments: “For 2022, we’ll particularly be seeing an increase in sales for the sky blue baths, thanks to Dulux’s Bright Skies colour of the year announcement.” However, also expect to see more sumptuous colours, from the purple palette, with Pantone introducing Very Peri for 2022.

There may be more focus on the bathroom, but the area remains typically small and challenging for designers. So, there will continue to be a focus on utilising space more effectively and storage. CEO of Roman David Osborne states: “The key trend to creating space in the bathroom is integration. Integration of the shower enclosure to basin and vanity top offers spaces-saving benefits.

Drawers below a vanity top can be integrated to maximise bathroom storage.

By integrating the vanity top and shower enclosure, it eliminates the uncleanable joint or gap and solves sealing issues.”

TOUCH-FREE TECHNOLOGY Digital technology has been around for some time for bathrooms and is growing with sensor-controlled lighting and emergence of infra-red taps for homes. Buoyed by consumer demand for more hygienic environments, expect touch-free to grow in importance.

Leader category UK, LIXIL EMENA and Grohe UK Elina EnqvistTwomey points out: “Infra-red taps offer both improved hygiene as well as a sustainable element, two of the biggest driving factors for current consumer purchasing behaviour which we expect to see grow further in 2022.” Hiroyuki Higashimoto at Toto agrees adding: “We are seeing more and more end consumers via retailers or architects and interior designers specifying hygiene enhancing products. Our automated ranges include washlets, taps, soap dispenser and hand dryers to create a touch-free bathroom.”

HYGIENE Touch free technology neatly segues into, arguably, one of the biggest trends for bathrooms – hygiene. However, designers can also consider coating for ceramics reducing dirt and limescale build-up, natural antibacterial materials such as copper and wipe clean surfaces. National sales manager at Mermaid panels Keely Greenhaigh points out: “The sheer scale of the COVID pandemic means that it is highly likely that hygiene will remain a top priority for almost all consumers for many years to come.” She points out using panels eliminates “tiresome maintenance of the mouldprone, hard-to-clean grouting typical of a tiled bathroom.” While Darren Allison says hygiene is why copper baths are its fastest growing models, adding: “We have enhanced our copper bath offering with the launch of copper taps.

It is an area we expect to grow over the coming months.”

Lifting the lid It wasn’t so long ago, in the UK, the shower toilet was considered an outlandish extravagance at best or example of toilet humour at worst. But there has been a step change towards shower toilet acceptance and specification. It could be argued consumers who are more widely travelled, to the likes of the Far East – where douches are a standard specification – have become less resistant to the concept and, in fact, embraced the hygiene benefits.

In fact, interior design platform homeedit recently revealed the shower toilet was now the third most desirable bathroom tech in 2021 with 29,180 searches. It was only outranked by bathroom TVs (36,170 searches) and LED mirrors (73,400 searches).

Marketing manager of Geberit Sophie Weston comments on their growth of popularity: “More people than ever before are opting to include a WC with integrated spray function into their bathroom. We have seen a real cultural shift towards the realisation that water is essential for thorough cleanliness and optimal hygiene.”

Focus on hygiene Unsurprisingly, hygiene is a key trend driving bathroom design and particularly in a postCOVID landscape. Managing director of Duravit UK Martin Carroll says: “Consumers are now more wary of the need to be even more hygienic in the home, and the bathroom is a place where you go to cleanse and refresh yourself more than in any other room in the house.” And Sophie Weston of Geberit agrees: “Naturally, we have all become more concerned with our personal hygiene. Aside from the obvious – this increased awareness of cleanliness has also extended to wider areas of personal hygiene, with the shower toilet fast becoming the most soughtafter bathroom innovation in the UK.”

Ease of use Technology in shower toilets, also supports mega trends such as a growing ageing population. Automatic flushing and drying technology can provide independence for older generations and future-proof bathrooms for younger clients who have found their forever home. Tech for all Cutting-edge technology can of course command premium price tags, which may have previously limited sales. However, for bathroom retailers who may not have high net worth clientele, there are shower toilets for a variety of budgets. Growing UK sales Certainly, the expectations are that shower toilet sales will continue to grow for bathroom retailers, supported by the demand for hygiene and future proofing homes. Martin Carroll of Duravit comments: “Sales of shower toilets are only going to increase over the next two years as consumers adapt to a changing world and heightened awareness of hygiene, coupled with embracing technology in the home more and more.”

And Enqvist-Twomey agrees, concluding: “We expect that more and more homes will begin to future-proof their bathrooms with shower toilets in the next few years, particularly as their associated hygiene benefits begin to be more widely understood. We have seen an unprecedented demand for our shower toilets and other sensoractivated product, such as touchless taps, in the wake of the coronavirus crisis and we predict that hygiene will remain at the forefront of our minds both in the near future and more long-term.”

MD of Coram UK Steve Huntly talks about the company’s renewed focus on premium retail, “just in time” deliveries, and removal of its surcharge to demonstrate customer loyalty.

Following its Sealskin Duka brand launch being put on hold after its debut at Kbb Birmingham, while the world responded to COVID, then former MD John Blackburn stepping down, Steve Huntly picked up the reins of Coram UK. Steering the company through the pandemic, managing director Steve Huntly describes it as an “interesting” time. He comments: “On one hand, I think it brought a new impetus to the business. On the other hand, I think it was a natural succession because I had been involved with the strategy of the business for the last three years. It was an interesting time, and I would say it was both exciting to be able to put my stamp on it but also a challenge because I knew we had to hold things together.” Adding an additional level of difficulty, Huntly has had to operate the business – managing furlough – COVID rules, staff safety and hybrid working – all while working remotely due to extreme vulnerability of a family member.

Focus on retail Despite all these challenges, Coram UK (which includes Coram and Impey brands) and serves healthcare, merchant and retail sectors, has met with the group’s financial expectations. Huntly explained Impey was supported by the U-bounce and V-bounce in healthcare and retail sectors, respectively, while its Coram brand of shower enclosures benefitted from the W bounce of the merchant market.

Now, the company plans to extend its retail portfolio and launch premium Sealskin Duka enclosures, alongside its Geesa accessories.

Huntly comments: “We’re integrating three premium brands for the retail sector and those brands are Impey wetrooms, Geesa designer accessories, which we’ve always had in our portfolio but we’ve never made a big thing of them, and then we’re bringing the Sealskin

but with plans paused due to the pandemic, Sealskin Duka enclosures will now be launched to the market in February. “We’ve been desperate to develop the product pipeline and really reach the retail sector”, exclaims Huntly.

Made from 8mm glass, Sealskin Duka enclosures feature UV bonded hinges and handles and include bespoke options, alongside standard models, and will be positioned for high-end retail.

These will be complemented by additions to the Impey portfolio, with tiled inserts and additional finishes for its drains. “It is really about giving the consumer more choice and integrating those premium brands to offer a wetroom, and then selling the dream to consumers.” Huntly adds: “The wetroom is the Rolls-Royce of showering because of its minimalist look, its level access and its gorgeous aesthetics. But, underneath that is the technology of our business – a deck with builtin falls and waterguard tanking and waterproof system. Consumers don’t need to understand the technical bit, but you do need to give people some awareness of the technology in the dream.”

Coram UK is supporting retailers to help get that message across, having developed its product catalogue with Virtual Worlds. Using the CAD software, designers can show consumers the finished wetroom but also strip away the layers to demonstrate the technology beneath the surface and how it is created.

Distribution challenge Of course, the global distribution crisis continues to affect all businesses and Huntly admits it “has been incredibly difficult to navigate”, predicting supply and demand won’t level out until June or July. While he says UK manufacturing of its wetrooms has meant the company has been able to satisfy demand, components and products brought in through its global distribution network have been more of an issue. He points to reduced distribution capacity, Brexit and delays at ports and customs.

Huntly explains: “We’ve just had to be very authentic, open and honest with our customers and say we might not be able to give you exactly what you want but let’s tell you what we can do and how we can help you.” He adds: “So we’ve stretched some of the lead times. In many cases our customers didn’t need our next-day delivery service. They could live with three or four days or even a week, as long as we were open and honest”.

Huntly believes the distribution crisis has changed the face of customer service, adding: “Next-day delivery - everything together – that whole model has been blown away. I think the

future of customer service is about asking what do you actually need? When do you need to get it? We’re working to deliver impeccable customer service but one that is realistic to the demands of the distribution network and the global distribution crisis.”

He points to the importance of demand planning, praising Coram UK’s supply chain team which, integrating with sales, plans and forecasts the requirements of the business.

“Having that clarity in our business about who needs what, when and where sounds very simple but is really hard to do. I think we’ve managed to deliver and continue to deliver a really high service in this pandemic.”

Pricing and loyalty Huntly adds Coram UK has been equally transparent in its pricing, which it has had to increase to cover distribution costs. “What we’ve said is “let’s share the pain” and it’s as simple

www.rdr.link/KAB032 and as honest as that”, explains Huntly. He says in some cases the company has passed on a surcharge and in others it has increased prices on SKUs. However, going forwards, Coram UK plans to reduce its surcharge to show loyalty to its retailers.

Steve Huntly explains: “In 2022, we have a very transparent pricing strategy that says we’re going to put a price increase on that’s going to be a fair and equitable price with the current conditions in the market, but we are now going to remove our surcharge and accept that we’re gambling on things getting better. So we’re going to take a bit of pain and show loyalty to our customers.”

He concludes: “We’ve taken the strategic decision to provide stability for trading at the risk of impacting our own margins. Hopefully people will see the loyalty of that and the benefit of that. We’re here to support and recover together.”

Customer relationships, presentation and firstclass customer service are all integral aspects of the selling journey. But of course, closing a sale is the end goal any salesperson wants to strive for.

So therefore, it can of course be really frustrating for a sale to fall through at the last moment when you or your team have gone above and beyond to provide an exceptional service. So, what can be done to limit this and when a sale has been agreed how can you – as the retailer – optimise on cross-selling and upselling opportunities?

Christmas is over and we’re all back to work.

The decorations are down, we’re a little bit plumper, have credit card bills that are a little larger, we’ve run out of things to do with the leftover turkey and there’s that general ‘holiday blues’ feeling in the air. You can see it in people’s faces, we are all experiencing it. It’s no wonder January is widely regarded as the most depressing month in the UK. The days are still short, the weather still bitterly cold and summer feels a million miles away. The third Monday in January is now known as ‘Blue Monday’ and considered the most depressing day of the

Sales Principles There are three key principles of practice to keep in mind. These are fundamental throughout the customer interaction and purchasing journey but particularly critical at these final stages of the process.

Simple yet essential: patience, problem solving and simplicity should be key tools in your arsenal when it comes to the final stages of negotiation. Patience and putting yourself in the mindset of the customer will ensure you don’t come across as too forceful or pushy in your sales approach. Use closed questions whilst still remaining light-hearted and friendly, to gently prompt customers towards reaching a decision.

Know your product offering inside out and be able to suggest resolutions that are simple and digestible, minimising opportunity for customers to make a fleeting exit at the last minute. It is also worthwhile logging any recurrent customer queries or concerns around any particular product categories so you can anticipate these in advance for future customers.

Cross and upsell Whilst cinching the deal is the ultimate end goal, you should always have in mind how you can further optimise a sale by cross-selling or upselling. The opportunity to upsell can present itself at any or multiple times throughout the sales negotiation process. A lot of upsell potential stems from being able to read your customer well and assessing where there might

be opportunity for them to purchase a higher spec model. Keep in mind that budget is not the only factor but usage, individual needs and requirements, style and context of the property will play their role too. Again, understanding the full scope of your product offering and being able to swiftly compare spec details is crucial in being able to explain these benefits and differences coherently and quickly to a customer.

Cross-selling is much more about playing on the customer’s needs and desires, encouraging them to make further purchases in addition to their original purchase. In the bathroom, accessories and streamlined storage solutions provide the perfect opportunity for cross-selling.

Where possible, having that dedicated space in your showroom that shows a complete bathroom offering across all touch points can really help the customer to understand how the different elements complement one another and enable them to visualise how the completed look would translate into their own bathroom.

Danish mentality Let’s take a look at Denmark for a second. As far as winter is concerned, this Scandinavian country has it way worse than we do. Their winter days are shorter by about two and a half hours. It’s on average 6° C colder. The cost of living is circa 17% higher and tax rates are much higher than ours.

And yet, they are one of the happiest countries in the world. Why is that? There are many reasons, but I’d like to introduce you to one of them. The Danish concept of ‘Hygge’.

Hygge kind of translates as an atmosphere of warmth, wellbeing and cosiness. When you feel at ease and are able to enjoy simple pleasures and being in the moment. You see, if we are feeling blue in January (or any other time for that matter) very often it’s because we’re focussing on what we don’t have.

Positive focus We might be sad about not being able to spend

as much time with our family anymore. Or we might be worried about what’s coming up in the future. We could be excited about future plans but they just seem so far away. Our energy is focussed on things that we can’t change and things that we can’t have.

Where the Danes have got this right is they’ve learnt how to make the best of the situation, and in fact make it something that others envy and attempt to learn and replicate.

They are focussed on being in the moment and enjoying simple pleasures.

If you’re feeling the January blues, try channeling the viking in you and think about how you can embrace the concept of Hygge in your life more. Focus on what you can do, what you can appreciate, the simple things that perhaps you’ve taken for granted recently.

Read a book, light a candle, play a board game, wrap up warm and enjoy the cold weather. Before you know it spring will be here, then summer. And who knows… maybe you’ll even start to look forward to experiencing Hygge again in January next year.

Feel-good factor Start small or be bold – it’s your call but pull your finger out. There’s no time like the present to show your employees you care and up the feelgood factor. Walk your talk. Blow the dust off your corporate values and deliver them to your people NOW. Consider it an investment in the future of your business as your biggest assets walk in your doors every day.

Explore things like free lunch on Friday, access to Wi-Fi onsite, and birthdays off, flexitime, study leave, supported learning, partnering with a local charity, getting a discounted rate for health and wellbeing services, training mental health first aiders or even creating a talent academy so that you can nurture your staff from day one.

I dare you to mystery shop yourself. How do your employee benefits stack up against leading employers in your sector and your local area?

What are you going to do about it? Don’t fall into the trap of forming a working committee or delegating this hot potato. Step up and act. As Paul Tudor Jones II, hedge fund pioneer, says “You adapt, evolve, compete or die.” Listen to him. He’s one of the few people who predicted Black Monday, back in the day.

Upside management Have I riled you yet? Take this as your final wakeup call and thank me later. Never forget that everyone is a consumer and consumers vote with their feet, including your employees. This is

why I predict a resurgence in ‘upside management’ which has already proved popular during the pandemic. This philosophy gives staff the freedom to serve customers how they see fit as seen at Timpson, the UK’s leading shoe repair, key cutting and engraving specialist. Chairman and owner John Timpson stresses it is all about keeping the business simple so that customers get the best service. How to value a kbb business Thinking of selling, looking to invest or borrow money? Then you should know how much your business is worth says founder of kbbsupport.com Toby Griffin

There are many reasons why you might start wondering what your kitchen, bathroom or bedroom business is worth. Are you thinking that it’s time to retire or – at least – step back from the day-to-day, do you want a change of career, are you looking for investment or to borrow money, do you have a change in circumstances or priorities and want to sell?

It could be more than one of the above, or many other reasons, so here’s a helpful guide to what needs to be considered when looking to value your KBB business:

What is it worth?

Well, although there are many different methods, as an example, here is a simple calculation that is a good starting point: (Average net annual profit x 3) + Value of assets So you need to multiply your average net annual profit by three, then add the value of the assets.

Therefore we need to define “Average net annual profit” and “Value of assets”.

Average net annual profit Defining “net profit” is pretty easy (i.e. profit after tax), but many business owners aren’t salaried and just take a share of profit for their remuneration, which doesn’t account for their input to the business in the overheads.

Therefore, in this situation, you must estimate a

salary for a manager/director to perform the role that you do, and remove this from the net profit calculation. For example: if the average net annual profit is £120k, but it would cost £50k/year to employ someone that carries out your duties, then the effective average net annual profit is £70k.

Value of assets Most kbb businesses have assets that fall into one of these definitions: stock, displays, goodwill, premises, machinery, vehicles, fixtures’n’fittings, cash in the bank, and the balance of debtors and creditors. In all cases, net realisable value is required (i.e. what someone will actually pay for it, not what they should pay for it).

A rough stock valuation is pretty straightforward, as it will generally be the price the business paid for the products less depreciation. Displays are less easy – particularly kitchens – as it will depend on their configuration, and whether they can be sold as a complete room-setting, and/or whether additional units are available. Generally fitted furniture and worktops will have a low realisable value, but appliances, brassware and sanitaryware will be much higher.

Goodwill is the most subjective aspect of a business valuation. How long has the business been established? Do you have loyal/repeat customers? Are there any guaranteed, on-going

contracts that are bound by an agreement? Is the name highly regarded? Is the digital marketing (website, social-media) up-to-date and well visited? Is the business in a really good location? How much goodwill will leave when you do? All of these questions need to be answered. Until this estimated value is established by an industry expert, then it is safest to assume that the goodwill value is low or zero.

The value of the premises – as part of a business sale – depends firstly on who owns it/them. Wolseley UK has announced it has entered into binding agreements with Saint-Gobain for the acquisition of Neville Lumb, DHS and Bassetts.

Separately, Wolseley UK has entered into exclusive negotiations for the acquisition of Ideal Bathrooms. It is expected the acquisition of the plumbing and heating focussed businesses will be completed in the first half of 2022.

Scandinavian bathroom brand Svedbergs Group has acquired 100% shareholding of Bath-based Roper Rhodes. Established by Brian Roper in 1979, his sons Mark and Paul Roper were majority shareholders but will leave the business with immediate effect.

Current managing director Leigh Leather will report directly into Svedberg Group CEO Per-Arne Andersson, and fellow directors Will Steele, Simon Taylor and Chris Vallance will remain on the Roper Rhodes operational board.

British furniture manufacturer LochAnna Kitchens has welcomed Jenna McKidd as regional sales manager, covering Yorkshire, the North East, and Scotland. She brings a breadth of knowledge to the role, having worked for six years in the kitchen industry, starting in 2016 as a sales executive. In October 2017, McKidd opened and ran a purposebuilt kitchen showroom and has most recently worked with Scottish kitchen manufacturer Ashley Ann as a kitchen designer.
