ast your mind back to 1980 and prime minister Lady Thatcher’s oft-quoted words of defiance: “To those waiting with bated breath for that favourite media catchphrase, the 'U-turn', I have only one thing to say: 'You turn if you want to.

The lady's not for turning!' I say that not only to you but to our friends overseas and also to those who are not our friends.”

Fast forward to today and incumbent Rishi Sunak is proving to be cast from a different mould, rowing back on net zero commitments in a bid to ‘reduce costs for consumers’.

The climate experts are not happy, citing the opposite view that it actually risks increasing costs by delaying the shift away from fossil fuels and reducing the economic benefits to the UK. Professor Dave Reay executive director of Edinburgh Climate Change Institute, University of Edinburgh didn’t mince his words:” It’s not pragmatic, it’s pathetic.”

Understandably industry groups and associations are not delirious with the decision either. Paul Hollick from the AFP called it “kicking the can down the road”, while the SMMT was more measured saying that “the automotive industry’s commitment to a zero-emission new car and van market remains unchanged” and added the caveat that “the decision must be backed up with a package of attractive incentives and measures to accelerate charging infrastructure to give consumers the confidence to switch. Carrots move markets faster than sticks.”

Perhaps for the SMR sector, the IMI’s words are most prescient as it argues that “the deadline shift demonstrates a distinct lack of understanding of the pressures a multitechnology vehicle parc places on the automotive workforce.”

It adds that “the upskilling that has already taken place has come at a financial strain which businesses and individuals have justified because of the expected increase in EV adoption. Even if EV uptake slows over the next few years, there will still need to be a concerted focus on upskilling to meet the needs of the growing parc as well as other emerging technologies such as connected and autonomous.”

It foresees a situation where with the ICE vehicle parc not diminishing, the skills to work on petrol and diesel vehicles will need to be maintained. And this multi-technology pressure could undermine access to competent and fairly priced aftermarket services as a whole, not only threatening road safety in general but hitting those operators struggling with cost-of-business pressures hardest – the very group the government’s announcement is allegedly designed to help.

Sunak’s decision does seem at odds with current thinking and the general acceptance and momentum towards a greener, net zero-based future. Whatever one might think of his motivations, spurious or not, the one question worth asking is whether this industry will take any notice and continue down its own path of reducing emissions, investing in alternative fuels and manufacturing vehicles that are generally less impactful on the planet? While it may wish to and do so, a helping hand sooner rather later would be helpful.

NEWS ‘Can kicked down road’ says AFP In response to the government’s recent announcement about extending decarbonisation deadlines, Paul Hollick, chair, Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP) expressed disappointment at the move, saying that though some members will be pleased about it because it takes the pressure to electrify away for the time being, the reaction across the fleet sector is largely negative.

He pointed to the motor industry and fleet customers investing billions of pounds towards meeting the 2030 electrification deadline and, while serious operational issues need to be tackled, especially when it comes to electric vans, the assumption within the membership was that the government would need to provide more support, not move the goalposts.

“The overwhelming feeling is probably one of irritation” “The overwhelming feeling is probably one of irritation. Fleets have done some incredible work when it comes to electrification and it feels as though the can has been kicked down the road in a fairly arbitrary fashion by a government that sees this move as politically expedient,” he said.

“There are, of course, a range of dangers. The value of existing EVs may be negatively affected; investment in charging infrastructure may fall away; and there may just be something of a ‘manana’ environment around electrification for the next few years.

However, this must be resisted and it is especially important the local authorities are properly funded to ensure the installation of on-street chargers becomes widespread.”

Mixed fortunes for used LCVs Light commercial vehicle (LCV) values continued to reflect the changing mix of vehicles reaching the wholesale sector, averaging £8,885 during August, according to reseller BCA. Values have fallen steadily since the highpoint recorded in March, with the changing mix of stock and rising numbers of lower grade vehicles being the major factors influencing values over recent weeks, says the company.

Average LCV values fell by £163 (1.8%), month-on-month in August, having fallen by a similar amount between June and July.

LCVs are currently at the lowest monthly average value recorded since 2021.

Despite this, sold volumes of light commercials remained consistent as BCA’s daily programme of online LCV sales continued to deliver a wide range of stock for buyers, with sellers and buyers being reasonably aligned in terms of price expectation. Monthly buyer numbers continued to increase and in August reached their highest point this year.

Performance against price guides has improved over recent weeks, sitting at 99.9% in August, underlining that buyers and vendors remain in tune on pricing expectations. Demand for the very best condition light commercial vehicles continued to significantly outstrip interest

in more poorly presented vehicles.

Stuart Pearson, BCA COO UK commented: “August continued the now well-established trend of a two-tier market, with significant levels of demand and very competitive bidding for well presented, better grade vehicles, with challenging conditions for poorer quality stock – particularly where higher volumes of repeat models have a significant influence on bidding activity.”

He added: “This is a good time to remind sellers that the remarketing basics remain as important as they ever were.

Where appropriate, mechanical and cosmetic repairs will add value and improve first time conversion, and the right level of preparation and clear transparency around vehicle provenance will also contribute towards achieving optimum value and speed of sale.”

Longer waits for SMR Lead times for fleet service, maintenance and repair (SMR) have risen by more than 57% since the start of the pandemic, according to new data from epyx.

In January 2020, the average time between when a vehicle booking was created to when it went in for work was 8.11 days - but today stands at 12.76 days. This data is taken from epyx's 1link Service Network platform, which is used by fleets totalling more than four million vehicles to manage and process SMR. Tim Meadows, chief commercial officer at epyx, said: “SMR providers such as franchise dealers, independent garages and fast-fits have found themselves under pressure since the pandemic when it comes to everything from getting the supplies they

need, such as parts and consumables, to recruiting the people required to run their businesses efficiently.

“This is having a direct impact on lead times and fleets are undoubtedly having to wait much longer to access the services they need, which means both more planning ahead for routine maintenance and vehicles spending more time off-road when they do break down. In turn, this can lead to vehicles spending more time being unavailable, reducing capacity and putting upward pressure on costs.” epyx’s data also showed that average lead times have been around 12 days since at least the end of 2021 and have risen above 13 days at some points in the last few months.

Using HVO renewable diesel saves around two kilograms of carbon per litre burnt so carbon savings quickly mount up into dozens of tonnes. Not all operators can immediately switch to electric plant or vehicles, so HVO is a good option that also banishes fuel and DPF filter problems with notably smoother quiet running and great performance in cold weather.

New plate drives sales of LCVs Britain’s new LCV market grew for the ninth month in a row in September, up 28.1% with 44,760 vans, pickups and 4x4s hitting UK roads, according to the latest figures from the SMMT. One of the most popular months for new van purchases, plate change September, saw robust demand round off 20.8% growth in the year to date, with 257,979 units registered in the first nine months.

The society pointed to operators continuing to opt for payload and fuel efficiencies, with the largest vans – 2.5 tonnes to 3.5 tonnes –

remaining the biggest market for new buyers in September, rising 13.0% to 29,150 units. Medium-sized vans also saw significant growth, up 89.0% to 7,085 units, while demand for pickups and 4x4s increased by 64.4% and 141.8% respectively.

Deliveries of the smallest vans, meanwhile, fell -13.4% to 880 units.

The plug-in van grant, competitive running costs and increasing model choice continued to boost demand for battery electric vans (BEVs) in September, with deliveries up 85.9% to 2,882 units – accounting for one in 16 new vans registered in the month.

Van conversion is a gas!

JCB has made a second breakthrough in proving the wider appeal of hydrogen combustion technology by installing one of its hydrogen engines into a Mercedes Sprinter van.

The retrofit was completed in just two weeks and one of the vehicle’s first test drivers was JCB Chairman Anthony Bamford, who is leading the company’s £100m hydrogen engine project.

The engine used in the van is the same as those already powering prototype JCB construction and agricultural machines. It is the second Mercedes vehicle to be retrofitted with a JCB hydrogen engine – earlier this

A new service from LubiQ HVO Fuels aims to make it easier for contractors to quickly access renewable diesel fuel by the 10l or 20l jerrycans or 205 litre pallet load anywhere in the UK. Offering a cut of 80% in particulate matter and as high as 90% less net carbon emissions, HVO is extremely practical as any diesel engine can use it and it can be mixed with standard diesel.

Lord Bamford said: “We have retrofitted this vehicle with a JCB hydrogen engine to demonstrate how simple it will be to convert existing vans and to show that it is not only construction and agricultural machines that can be powered by hydrogen.”

Digital future Fleet management software could become obligatory in the future as part of long-term regulatory trends, says consultancy FleetCheck.

Momentum is coming from two different directions, according to managing director Peter Golding – increasing digitalisation of both fleet compliance and general financial records.

“Over the last few years, we've seen the DVSA stipulate that software needs to be used for the Earned Recognition scheme in order to report the condition of truck fleets. At present, this is voluntary, but it is certainly possible that it becomes more widespread in the future. There’s also the DVSA’s desire to handle preventative maintenance inspections digitally.

“From another direction, VAT and accountancy records now need to be submitted to HMRC digitally, and this has prompted a huge shift towards smaller businesses using specialist accountancy software.

“Our view is that it's unlikely that the movement towards digitalisation will stop here and will increase over time, spreading into areas such as the company fleet. How long this will take is difficult to say but it is very much the direction of travel.”

A logical step Peter said that company car and van operators were already submitting information of this kind directly and indirectly without necessarily giving the matter much thought.

“Fleet data is already fed into official records when it comes to MOT tests and the Motor Insurance Database, as examples. It is arguably a logical step from here to perhaps being asked to record all walkaround checks on vehicles digitally and submit them to a central health and safety portal.”

TRAFFIC NEWS Courier company on the BEVs Cheshire-based Topspeed Couriers is accelerating towards a future of electric transport by investing heavily in battery-powered vans. he company has already added 22 zero-emission vans to its fleet and has six more on order. Ultimately, though, the operator's plan is to switch its entire 130-strong fleet to electric vehicles as soon as practically possible.

Managing director Gillian Lockley and chief executive Stephen Clegg see the move as an opportunity, not an obligation – but they believe that successful implementation of their plan depends on very careful preparation.

“People say that running an electric fleet is difficult but we just don't accept that,” says Clegg. “It's like any change in a production process – you have to do your research, consider all the implications, put a proper plan in place and then manage the transition carefully.

“That’s the way we’ve done it, and we think this gives us a competitive edge. As well as differentiating our business against many of our competitors, early adoption means we'll be well established as an electric vehicle operator, and have a far better understanding of how to run an electric fleet successfully than those who come late to the party.”

Setting the electrification plan in action involved more than just deciding to buy some batterypowered vehicles, reveals Lockley.

“We put a lot of thought into the bigger picture of running electric vehicles, and how they would fit into our business," she adds. "That meant looking closely at route scheduling, driver training and a strategy for recharging.”

Topspeed took its first two electric vans – both Mercedes-

Benz eVito models – late last year.

They were intended as a trial, but Topspeed quickly saw the benefits of going electric and placed orders for more. The second batch of 14 vans was followed by eight more, and a further six arrived in September.

“The eVito is not the cheapest van on the road but we're happy to pay for the classleading reliability, build quality and back-up cover it offers," explains Lockley. "The threeyear, unlimited mileage warranty is very attractive and

the free roadside assistance – from a uniformed and factorytrained Mercedes-Benz technician – is excellent.

“We've also been very impressed with the range these vans achieve. The eVito is advertised as being able to cover up to 162 miles per charge but we find that with careful driving we achieve much further – close to 200 miles, which is very impressive.”

“We buy our vehicles outright and plan to write off the cost over four years, but in reality Mercedes-Benz vans last much longer. In our experience they'll easily go for six or seven years, at up to 100,000 miles per year, without any trouble. We believe we've bought the best electric vans available, and also put in the effort and investment to allow us to provide our customers with the best service possible."

Pioneering hydrogen HGV set for trials HYDROGEN VEHICLE SYSTEMS Zero-emission, hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle innovator, Hydrogen Vehicle Systems (HVS), has delivered its engineering prototype test ‘mule’, X1.5, to its test facilities.

This marks the beginning of the crucial development phase to bring the UK’s first full-sized hydrogen HGV to market.

The X1.5, powered by the same state-of-the-art hydrogen fuel cell as will be used in the production HGVs, will be used for functionality and systems development, including dyno-

rig testing, and is an important precursor to track testing prototypes that will quickly follow.

The delivery of X1.5 is a key milestone for HVS which, following the successful launch of its HGV technology demonstrator in April this year, has been focussing on bringing this transformative vehicle to market.

Designed and engineered from a clean sheet approach, HVS' zero-emission hydrogen electric HGV is set to decarbonise the hardest-toabate section of the transport industry, heavy haulage. HGVs currently make up 1.5% of all vehicles on the road yet produce 19% of the emissions.

HVS' range of HGVs will emit only 693ml of water per kilometre as a by-product of the hydrogen fuel-cell producing electricity.

Borough cleans up its act KINGSTON COUNCIL Waste collection services in Kingston are set to become fully electric with the roll-out by Veolia and Kingston Council of 27 allelectric waste collection trucks.

The new vehicles will replace the current diesel fleet, helping to improve the borough’s air quality and contribute to the council’s climate targets by significantly reducing carbon emissions generated while collecting waste and recycling. Powering all vehicles from the grid will

remove 554 tonnes of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to taking 270 cars off the road.

Councillor Noel Hadjimichael, Kingston Council’s portfolio holder for assets, commissioning and waste said: “This is a huge milestone for climate action in Kingston. We are committed to finding sustainable solutions to tackle climate change and introducing a fully electric waste collection fleet demonstrates that. We are proud to be one of the first authorities nationally to make

such a move.

“By introducing an electric waste fleet, we’ll help improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly, bringing us closer to achieving net zero by 2030.”

Scott Edgell, general manager for Veolia South London added: “We’re excited to see our partnership with Kingston Council result in a better service for residents, along with reduced air and noise pollution thanks to the introduction of our new electric fleet of recycling and waste collection vehicles.

“By constantly innovating our resources and services we can drive ecological transformation across the borough and support our partner on their net zero carbon journey.”

TRAFFIC NEWS Sofa so good WESTMID LOGISTICS Ever wondered how furniture gets moved around the UK? Well Westmid Logistics is the answer. The company specialises in the delivery of three-piece suites, collecting them from the manufacturer and delivering to distribution centres or the high street.

Based in Lye, near Stourbridge, the business operates a fleet of 16 DAF CF and XF tractor units and more than 40 trailers, split between two depots and has recently invested in some new Dry Liner trailers from Krone to help meet increased demand for its services.

Rob Cartwright, transport manager, said: “We have expanded dramatically since taking on new contracts, so there has been a process of replacing older trailers and buying new stock to support our expansion.

Krone has been very helpful in supporting these changes, which in turn enable our business to

grow sustainably.”

Westmid has purchased six of Krone’s steel Mega Dry Liners.

Featuring 30mm thick steel cassette sidewall panels with full ‘honeycomb’ keyhole profiles, the trailers are perfectly designed to carry items such as furniture which requires multi lashing points and high security.

With internal loading at 2.9m within a 4m overall height, standard features include steel container doors and an anticondensation wall coating to combat damp. The steel chassis and infrastructure are double coated to prevent corrosion, enabling Krone to offer a tenyear anti corrosion guarantee.

Interior impact protection includes a double scuff plate on the side walls to minimise damage from forklifts, while the 30mm thick flooring also provides resilience as well as load stability. Recessed doubledeck guide rails and strapping rails ensure loads are secure.

“They are well put together and competitively priced, which made the buying decision easy for us.”

Krone Dry liners are suitable for a wide range of applications.

Options for fit-out include flexible guide rails and double

deck loading, keyhole profile for flexible load securing, as well as bulk material outflow, strapping rails, or strapping bars. A felt interior is available for protecting premium goods such as furniture.

Other options include rearmounted sensors and auto-braking to prevent trailers crashing into loading bays, and electronic air suspension with one-touch height adjustment.

Fleet upgrade for perimeter business RETHYNC Having run a reliable fleet of Ford Transits for a number of years, hoardings specialist Rethync has purchased seven new Ford Transit 350 LWB chassis double cab vehicles with 2.0l Euro 6 engines.

The company commissioned Lyndon Systems to build and fit bespoke dropside bodies and convert the rear crewcab area into a secure tool pod to provide its installers with an ideal work vehicle.

The newly acquired fleet will significantly enhance Rethync's transportation capacity, as well provide the team with more environmnetally-friendly and

ack in 2013, the Verification of Lubricant Specifications (VLS) was formed amid concerns that some lubricant products were being sold with claims that did not seem to be believable.

Closer inspection found that occasionally sub-standard formulations were being passed off as the latest specifications or even failing to perform effectively.

The vast majority of lubricants sold in the UK market at the time were fully compliant. However, out of this concern, reputable lubricant blenders and manufacturers came together to launch VLS, an independent organisation providing a credible and trusted means to verify lubricant specifications, bringing transparency to the lubricant marketplace and protecting and educating end users.

Since its formation, VLS has investigated over ninety different lubricant complaints, from cold weather properties to compliance with industry standards and market regulations. Over the years, the types of cases that VLS has handled have changed, and it has adapted to reflect market needs.

As the Verification of Lubricant Specifications (VLS) marks its tenth anniversary this year, CVW spoke to head of the Technical Review Panel, Alan Outhwaite, about the organisation's impact on the lubricants industry.

Non-compliance with stated specifications is the most frequent cause of complaint. Most cases have involved marketing claims, whether it be compliance with the ACEA, the European Association of major motor manufacturers, European Engine Oil Sequences, other market standards, or conflicting or unevidenced OEM approvals.

End users must be confident that a product can deliver what it claims and is suitable for use in the given application.

The number of cases received each year has varied quite significantly. The launch of VLS was met with an expected influx of cases due to pent-up demand. COVID-19 impacted case levels as the industry dealt with shutdowns and closures. In 2023, VLS has received the highest number of cases

since 2016, with a greater diversity of cases than ever before, as awareness of VLS extends across all aspects of the UK lubricants industry. Looking back over all the cases investigated over the past ten years, some of the key learnings for lubricant companies have been: ��� Lubricant marketers must avoid making

mutually exclusive performance claims or sweeping statements about which applications/vehicle marks lubricants are suitable for ��� Lubricant marketers are responsible for updating all publicly facing materials, websites, print and labels ��� Lubricant marketers must regularly audit product claims to ensure compliance ��� Lubricant marketers should consider proactive quality assurance programmes to assess product performance to a given

range of standards to support performance claims ��� Lubricant marketers claiming any ACEA performance standards must be signatories of the European Engine Lubricant Quality Management System (EELQMS) marketers Letter of Conformance ��� Additive companies must provide appropriate support for current claims When VLS was formed in 2013, there was clearly a lack of understanding in some areas of the marketplace. VLS is confident that ten years later, the message around compliance is being heard.

A good commercial example of the work being done to promote better understanding is Volvo’s VDS-5. This is a new heavy duty fuel-efficient diesel engine oil specification with an SAE viscosity of 5W-30. Designed for the latest 13l engines (Euro VI Step D), it is not backward compatible with previous Volvo Long

Drain Specification fluids such as a Volvo VDS 4.5 SAE 10W-30 grade.

The lower viscosity can result in lower oil pressure, which could lead to multiple dashboard warning triggers. It is, however, expected to deliver over 0.5% fuel economy improvements versus 10W-30 oils.

VLS has worked hard to help manufacturers and marketers understand and adjust to these changes, including highlighting where claims can and cannot be made or removing retired or obsolete ACEA engine oil sequence claims that may be misleading end users and are no longer relevant.

Lubricant blenders, manufacturers and distributors alike know that they will be held to account by VLS to ensure that lubricants are correctly described and really can deliver what they claim. But as the industry evolves, a recent influx of cases shows that there is still work to be done to ensure an open and fair marketplace in which end users can have confidence.

SAPPHIRE ADDS NEW FACET TO ITS OPER ATION

n a bid to extend its reach across the Irish Sea, Sapphire Vehicle Services has entered into an alliance with Northern Ireland's Rockmount Vehicle Maintenance.

The partnership will mean even better backup for customers of both – especially those who operate on both sides of the water.

The two companies are divisions of parent group Ballyvesey Holdings, which has interests across related sectors including transport and logistics, truck sales and aftersales support, trailer manufacturing, transport industry services, construction equipment sales and property development.

Commercial vehicle specialist, Sapphire, is looking to the Emerald Isle for further growth with new partnership.

“Sapphire customers, meanwhile, will be able to take advantage of Rockmount's services if their trucks visit Northern Ireland.”

Rockmount’s site, close to the M2 motorway, features no fewer than 23 fulllength bays, six of which have inspection pits. There are a pair of eight-tonne cranes alongside the usual column lifts, a rollingroad brake tester and a third-party tyre contractor on site.

Sapphire boasts a network of 19 workshops across England and Scotland which together look after close to 30,000 vehicles, for a client list that includes some of the biggest fleets in the supermarket sector.

Rockmount, meanwhile, runs an impressively-equipped 23-bay workshop on a huge open site in Newtownabbey – which last year won recognition as an official Mercedes-Benz Trucks Authorised Repairer.

Rockmount is also an approved agent for Mercedes-Benz and Setra buses and coaches, and MTU off-highway industrial engines.

Alongside contract and ad-hoc repair and maintenance, the 35-strong Rockmount team offer services including trailer diagnostics and repair, tachograph calibration, tail lift LOLER and weight testing, MOT appointments and tank washing. The depot also holds a stock of more than 3,000 lines of Mercedes-Benz genuine parts and items for other brands, and there's a dedicated breakdown team to provide roadside assistance across Northern Ireland.

Crucially, the site also enjoys a huge yard with ample space for parking and manoeuvring, and is covered by 24-hour security patrols.

Originally formed to provide maintenance for the fleet of Montgomery Transport – also part of the Ballyvesey group – Rockmount began taking on outside work in 2010 and has grown apace since then. Turnover increased still further when the depot was awarded its MercedesBenz Trucks repair franchise last October. It now regularly services 60 vehicles per week, including many buses and coaches as well as trucks and vans, and is a 'one-stop shop’ for all requirements.

ADVANCED GUARD ADAS might look after the driver but who’s looking after the ADAS? Richard Pimm, Hickleys, looks at the importance of getting on board with calibration systems.

A

dvanced Driver Assistance Systems or ADAS for short has been a hot topic in the industry for the past number of years. This has caused aftermarket workshops to heavily invest in calibration systems to allow them to recalibrate these safety systems prior to handing the vehicle back to their customers.

So, what is ADAS? ADAS is a general term given to electronic vehicle systems that assist or support the driver whilst they are in control of the vehicle. This could include but not limited to: lane assist, emergency braking, blind spot detection, adaptive cruise control, road sign recognition, park assist, rear collision warning, pedestrian detection and many more. Almost all road traffic collisions are caused primarily by human error, the main function of ADAS is to limit this human error as much as possible.

These sensors constantly communicate their readings back to the vehicle’s many ECUs where complex algorithms calculate any potential risks that the driver may have missed or may be about to encounter.

How does ADAS interact with the driver?

Whilst the vehicle capturing all of this information about its surroundings is great, it is only of any use if this information then can then be acted on. There are two main ways in which this can happen. Intrusive and non-intrusive. Intrusive methods are where the vehicle takes full or partial command of its own controls. Or nonintrusive methods are best described as a

notification to the driver that they then must act on.

Non-intrusive system notifications may take the form of warning light, sound or vibration to warn the driver that they may be about to encounter an obstacle or collision. Intrusive systems effectively take control away from the driver and the vehicle will then steer or brake itself to avoid an obstacle or a collision. Some ADAS systems may use both methods, first warning the driver about a potential risk, then if the driver does not act, the vehicle will then take control to avoid an incident.

Some examples of non-intrusive systems include but are not limited to: park assist, road sign recognition, blind spot detection

and lane assist. Some examples of intrusive systems include but are not limited to: emergency braking, pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control. Some of these systems may change category depending on vehicle manufacturer.

Why do we need to recalibrate ADAS systems?

ADAS systems and their impact on road safety is unquestionable. However, they only function correctly if they are set up according to the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. ADAS sensors can be damaged or dislodged in a number of ways but most common reasons include: windscreen replacement, vehicle bumper or panel damage, poor road surface or pot hole damage or water ingress. ADAS sensors around the vehicle must be positioned and aimed in a very specific way so that the system functions correctly. Failure to ensure

If a sensor becomes damaged or misaligned it must be replaced or repaired. Part of this procedure also requires the technician to accurately calibrate the sensors using ADAS calibration equipment to ensure the sensors are all positioned and aimed within the OEM parameters.

Types of ADAS calibration There are two types of ADAS calibration static and dynamic. A static calibration requires the vehicle to be stationary with a calibration rig, board or panel positioned in front of it. A diagnostic tool is then used to calibrate the system in which the camera, radar, lidar or ultra sonic sensor will use this rig or board as a reference point to check alignment and position. The diagnostic tool will then confirm the success of this process. A dynamic calibration requires a diagnostic tool to put the vehicle into calibration or learning mode. The vehicle will then be road tested while meeting certain criteria such as speed or length of drive. The sensors being calibrated then use its real-world surroundings to selfcalibrate. The diagnostic tool will then confirm completion of this calibration once all parameters are met. The type of calibration required will differ depending on vehicle manufacturer. Some vehicles may even require a combination of both static and dynamic calibration.

How is ADAS affecting the commercial vehicle market?

While ADAS has been found in passenger car and light commercial vehicles for over a decade the technology took a little longer to be adopted by commercial vehicle manufacturers. That said, it has been seen in commercial vehicles for around the last five years. Since that time the majority vehicles have been maintained at OEM service centres due to manufacturer warranty. As these vehicles get older, they are now being seen more and more by aftermarket workshops or fleet operators. This is increasing pressure on aftermarket

workshops to adopt ADAS calibration systems to be able to recalibrate these vehicles after maintenance or repair has been carried out.

How can you future proof your workshop?

ADAS technology is here to stay and is only going to become more prevalent as we move towards level 4 autonomous selfdriving vehicles. It is now increasingly important to look into investing in ADAS calibration systems to allow your workshop to cope with the latest vehicles equipped with ADAS. While outsourcing or returning the vehicle to the OEM agent can seem like a short-term solution, in the long run this is

simply not cost effective due to vehicle down time and taking technicians away from the workshop. Investment in ADAS equipment doesn’t have to be as large as expected and with relatively short payback scenarios can work out a very good investment opportunity.

elphi is a big believer in diagnostics and the way diagnostic tools are revolutionizing the way vehicle workshops carry out repair and servicing.

So, it has big expectations for its latest release - a new online configurator for its diagnostic products and related accessories.

The intention is that the new tool will help workshops access market-leading diagnostic solutions so they can expand their service offering and repair quality, increasing revenue opportunities in the process.

An easy-to-use solution for workshops

The configurator acts as a guide helping the workshop to move through the options step-by-step which makes it easy to compare different hardware, software, and accessories. It incorporates both passenger car and heavy-duty (HD) applications that are covered by the Delphi diagnostic portfolio. It allows a user to start the configuration either by device type or by specific models or functions that are covered by the software, which are regularly growing thanks to continuous application development. More options in the configurator A new release for Delphi diagnostic software is also available; both the release and new configurator represent considerable growth for the company’s diagnostic portfolio. DS software version 2023.00 contains a variety of application coverage growth for both passenger and HD vehicles, notably an increase in coverage on popular hybrid and electric vehicles. It contains 38,849 unique system selections which expands model and systems selection by over 2500 since April

2022. It also increases heavy-duty EV applications to a total of 32 vehicle models.

Additionally, diagnostic users can enjoy increased coverage on ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), a growing area of vehicle functionality. The Delphi ADAS solution now covers 258 models with radar, 403 models with front camera, and 101 models with 360° camera.

Unique mounting So what exactly made the hub unique? The BPW hub system uses a clever spindle nut that automatically compensates for any wear in the bearings. Each time the hub is removed or the spindle nut is released and re-torqued, it automatically takes up any wear in the wheel bearings and sets the bearing pre-load to the correct amount. This gives an advantage over a compact or cartridge bearing, where it is not possible to adjust out any wear in the bearing.

The heavy-duty DIN/ISO taper roller bearings, together with the grease seals, are retained in the hub using circlips. If necessary, the circlips can be easily removed to facilitate checking or replacing of the bearings. When the bearings need to be replaced, this can be achieved without

having to separate the hub from the road wheel, brake drum, or disc. These commercially available taper roller bearings can be purchased as a repair kit and come complete with new circlips and grease seals.

It’s often the little things that make life easier. One of which is the hub spindle nut,

which allows faster and easier removal of the wheel and reduces brake re-lining times by at least 50%. Inspired by the speed and efficiency of Formula One pit stops, the BPW hub nut acts as a puller, enabling the removal of the entire hub, brake drum and road wheel assembly, in one simple movement. The benefits include easier service and repair, shorter servicing times, reduced maintenance costs, and less downtime. Semi-trailers with the Eco hub unit typically spend less time in the workshop; each brake service is shortened by at least 10 operations.

WEIGHT PROBLEM The arrival of new longer trailers on our roads poses a problem when it comes to monitoring the weight of loads.

CVW looks at one solution being offered to operators.

I

n response to the Department for Transport’s (DfT) surprise mandate to fit axle weighing equipment to longer semi-trailers (LSTs), axle weighing specialist, Axtec, has launched a new version of its successful Axtec OnBoard Load Indicator specifically tailored for LST combinations – to deliver highly accurate single-axle, gross and combination weights.

Use of LSTs will be restricted through Special Types General Orders (STGO), which will include LSTs as a new category.

Importantly, this means all new or existing LSTs must be fitted with on-board weighing to operate legally over 38 tonnes GCW. There exists a six-month transition period for those operators who are already running LSTs under the trial to ensure that they have an onboard weighing device fitted.

The DfT’s statement in May announced the conclusion of its successful, longrunning trial of LSTs, granting permission for their use on UK roads from 31st May 2023. The 10-year trial began in 2012 with 1,800 trailers with a further 1,000 added in 2017. To adequately guard against overloads, the tractor unit must also be fitted with Axtec OnBoard, although the system on the trailer will still operate independently when parked, or when used with a tractor unit that is not CLIP enabled. This fully complies with the new law, and the system can be installed on new trailers, or easily retrofitted to existing semi-trailers, including LSTs. Installation can be carried out either

by Axtec Service Engineers or by fitters trained by Axtec, at the trailer manufacturing site or on the customers premises.

Axtec’s successful OnBoard Axle Load Indicator is already installed on tens of thousands of rigid vehicles up to 32 tonnes GVW. It provides the driver with real-time axle loads, presented in an intuitive format using traffic-light logic showing legal axles in green, approaching maximum in amber and overloads in red. Pallets of bricks representing the load grow in size in proportion to the axle loads, to emphasise the nature of the any problem. All the necessary information is displayed to the driver on one easy-to-read screen, to enable him to utilise the vehicle safely right up to its legal maximum, without the risk of inadvertent overloads.

Sticking to maintenance schedules of workshop equipment is always good practice, but what are the best tips when it comes to preserving the accuracy and effectiveness of axle play detectors? MAHA UK provides some pointers.

A

s a supplier of workshop equipment we firmly recommend a six-monthly maintenance inspection to ensure the correct function of an axle play detector. This can be flexible depending on the frequency of which the equipment is used, but a minimum of every 12 months is necessary to remain within DVSA specifications.

Any inspections and maintenance work should be undertaken by the supplier’s own experienced, trained and professional service engineers, or by licenced dealers or service partners. Failure to do so will be viewed as non-compliance and any existing manufacturer’s warranty will become null and void.

Value maintenance That said, there are ‘housekeeping’ processes that operators should undertake to maintain functionality and longevity; for example, one of our recommendations is that equipment is periodically cleaned and treated with a care product – not with caustic cleaning agents, high pressure washers or steam jet cleaners – while paintwork damage should be repaired immediately to prevent corrosion.

Furthermore, operators need to relieve pressure to remove the test plates, so they can either lubricate guides with a grease gun or grease plastic sliding strips every 200 operating hours – or at least every three months! During this particular upkeep, operators should check that all guide rods are secure and tightened if necessary and check the oil level regularly – it must sit between the two easily-identifiable marks.

Every two years, the hydraulic oil should be changed – filling quantity and specifications should be found in the technical booklet supplied with the equipment; alternatively, a guide can be found by visiting www.maha.co.uk

Improve accuracy Axle play detectors are designed to find defects and wear in steering components, wheel bearings, shock absorbers and suspension – whether that be through lateral or longitudinal movement on the test plates.

They can check all components that swivel, twist or pivot – in essence, it can check everything in one action, ensuring they’re working as they should be. Using an axle play detector is also quick and precise, as opposed to using a lever or pry bar, which our engineers have, unfortunately, witnessed inside some workshops.

ntroduced at the recent Busworld 2023 event, ZF’s new AxTrax 2 LF electric portal axle for low-floor city buses is another step forward in the development of the company’s e-Mobility evolution. The new axle is said to offer improved performance to further support the commercial vehicle industry's transformation towards a more sustainable future. The series production of AxTrax 2 LF is set to commence in 2025.

“Adding AxTrax 2 LF to our comprehensive range of electric powertrains is a powerful expansion of our game-changing scalable and modular eDrive kit,” said Winfried Gründler, driveline systems product line leader with ZF's Commercial Vehicle Solutions division.

Simplifying bus electrification ZF’s new AxTrax 2 LF low-floor electric axle comes with two stand-alone silicon carbide (SiC) inverters and a highperformance electric control unit, offering

he steering behaviour of a vehicle can be adversely affected by numerous components of the chassis, including worn-out king pins and their bearings.

King pin wear tends to make itself known in the form of stiff steering, noise during the turning of the steering wheel, or uneven tyre wear. Further signs typical of king pin faults are problems with directional stability and the need for frequent, corrective steering action.

King pins play a supporting role. All steerable wheels of a commercial vehicle generally rotate about a king pin. The king pin attaches the stub axle to the wheel suspension and is, therefore, the only connection between the road and the axle.

It forms the link between the sprung and unsprung masses of the vehicle.

The permanent exposure of individual components, including bearings, sleeves, and the king pin, to dirt and spray, leads to corrosion and wear. This process is further accelerated by the consequences of poor maintenance (e.g. lubrication), bad road surfaces, or vehicle overloading.

It’s therefore imperative to carry out regular inspections of these component parts. Before beginning, make sure to always review and follow the axle manufacturer and company maintenance and procedure manuals. King pin wear inspection requires that no weight be on the axle; so jacking

up the front of the truck is required. Follow the correct procedures in your vehicle’s operating manual to properly lift the vehicle.

After the truck is lifted and no weight is on the axle, remove the wheels and tyres.

Tighten the wheel bearing to eliminate any play that may be related to a loose wheel bearing. Another way is to have another technician apply the brake to differentiate between wheel bearing and kingpin bushing wear. Try moving the wheel left to right and top to bottom and up and down.

If the wheel has any play you may have an issue likely caused by a worn king pin. Use a dial indicator to measure, axial and lateral movement which should not exceed 1/8in.

While there are external factors that impact the king pin's functionality and lifespan, it’s always prudent to source good quality, durable, long-lasting king pins designed to withstand such conditions.

Regrooving tyres is an accepted way of extending life and saving money, but it should be done safely and effectively. Here, Tomasz Wojciechowski, technical specialist engineer at Continental addresses some of the most commonly asked questions.

s one of the leading tyre manufacturers we are always being asked about regrooving, the benefits and pitfalls. One piece of advice we always give commercial vehicle and fleet operators is to ensure they are carrying out tyre regrooving safely and effectively.

Earlier this year, we produced a five-part series of tyre safety and advice videos, aimed at supporting technicians, drivers and business owners with key maintenance topics. It’s well worth a look and the link is at the bottom of this article.

First though let’s consider a few important operational factors that businesses should consider when regrooving a tyre.

Is it safer to not regroove a tyre?

Regrooving can be a safe, cost-effective solution that will extend the service life of a tyre. The problems begin when regrooving is not done correctly. All too often, we encounter tyres that have been cut too deeply or were in a poor overall condition to start with. Not only could it influence the tyre's performance and durability, as well as potentially being illegal, but it also ultimately negates the benefits of regrooving as it requires a replacement tyre.

Operators shouldn't be afraid of regrooving a tyre that is in good overall condition and is approved to be regrooved by the manufacturer. All of Continental's truck and bus tyres, for example, can be regrooved.

Done well, regrooving will help operators to maximise the service life of their tyres and help them to achieve the lowest overall driving costs for their fleet. If it's a feature that's included, it's one that you should consider using.

Is every used case appropriate for regrooving?

Although there’s nothing to stop you regrooving tyres for your business, we do find that the longevity, and therefore cost effectiveness of using a re-cut tyre, is impacted by the application. Typically, trucks operating off-road on construction sites or in mining and aggregate transport respond less well to regrooving. That is because the tyre is unlikely to last as long as a truck covering mainly motorway and A-road miles.

When it comes to trailers, we would suggest that you avoid using a regrooved tyre on the rearmost axle. Often these tyres are dragged laterally when the trailer corners heavily, which isn't optimal for regrooved rubber. It doesn't mean that the tyre cannot be used, however. You could perhaps look at swapping the regrooved tyre onto the first or second axle.

Are there any common regrooving errors?

Cutting too deep is a common regrooving error. You should measure the tread depth in various places around the circumference before you start regrooving. Always ensure

that you’re cutting from the shallowest part to reduce the risk of damaging the belt. If you do, the tyre must be discarded. Just like the brake discs on a car that hasn't been used for a few days, moisture can quickly cause the steel cords of the tyre to begin to rust, which could affect the tyre’s durability.

All too often, we also see evidence of technicians getting creative with their own tyre tread patterns. Tyres that are approved for regrooving will have a regrooving guide, specifying where the cuts should be made and to what depth. In our technical data book, we use clear yellow lines to demonstrate where the grooves should be cut. Making your own tread pattern by cutting every sipe or through the tread block may not only weaken the tyre but might also make the tyre unroadworthy.

oodyear has announced the integration of the its DriverHub mobile application into the Mercedes-Benz (MB) Truck App Portal.

Becoming a partner application supports drivers and fleets using MB trucks and the Truck App Portal with access to additional real-time vehicle data, driving efficiency, competitiveness, and sustainability through instant access to tyre condition information. The collaboration with Mercedes-Benz Truck is further expanding to include telematics services.

Greater visibility DriverHub is designed to provide drivers and fleet operators with a continuous stream of accurate tyre data, optimizing their tyre management practices. Tailored to the needs of drivers, the app offers real-time information sourced from Goodyear's tyre management solutions, including Goodyear TPMS, CheckPoint, and DrivePoint.

SENSOR STYLE HAMATON Hamaton has launched a new sensor for trucks, trailers, and buses. The new sensor – the EU-Pro Truck 1.0 – is also available in the UK through the Tyresure brand. The EU-Pro Truck 1.0 is an aftermarket original equipment replacement universal programmable TPMS sensor that provides a costeffective solution to replacing heavyduty vehicle OE sensors, and is designed to fit seamlessly into existing truck, bus or trailers’ tyre changing and maintenance procedures.

From July 2024, an operational TPMS system will be mandatory for all new EU vehicle registrations in categories M1, M2, M3, N1, N2, N3, O3, O4, and the EU-Pro Truck 1.0 TPMS sensor is fully programmable from the company’s European database of trucks, trailers, and buses, with new protocols automatically added to the protocol database as they become available, futureproofing sensors and maintenance processes. The EU-Pro Truck 1.0 Sensors are certified by TÜV SÜD for IATF 16949:2016 and ISO 9001:2015 to ensure product durability, lifespan, and quality. Covered by a 24-month or 100,000-kilometre warranty, the EUPro Truck 1.0 TPMS sensor transmits on a 433MHz frequency required for European trucks, buses, and trailer TPMS systems, and features the latest generation of battery and NXP chip.

EU-Pro Truck 1.0 TPMS sensors are compatible with Hamaton’s H56 and H57 diagnostic tools when combined with OBDII truck upgrades and software subscription and can also be used with ATEQ’s VT Truck 2.0, VT56 and VT57 diagnostic tools, giving additional flexibility when maintaining or servicing heavy-duty vehicles or fleets.

he new Greenance Brake Kit from Brembo is claimed to reduce light commercial vehicle particulate emissions by more than 80%, while lasting up to three times longer than competitor equivalents. The result is said to be a lower total cost of ownership that drops on average by 15%, combined with top braking performance.

Deriving its name from a merger of the words 'green' and 'performance', the company says that the Greenance Kit is an eco-friendly solution that anticipates low environmental impact requirements; and matches both customer expectations and environmental awareness without compromising on required braking performance.

This green performance is a result of a much lower environmental impact during braking, with a significant reduction in particulate emissions: -83% in PM10 and -80% in PM2.5.

The increased durability of the brake discs also triples their expected lifetime.

Providing extended mileage, this also ostensibly delivers a significant improvement in terms of the total cost of ownership of vehicles amounting to an average reduction of 15%.

The Greenance Kit features a jointly developed range of new combined innovative alloy discs and newly engineered brake pads, enhancing the company’s aftermarket line-up. This is derived from the company's heritage and experience motorsports and the OE sector.

ECE-R90 pass The kits have already passed the ECE-R90 homologation tests as well as “severe” benchmark road tests, conducted by the company's technicians.

ON THE PULL GUNSON The new Gunson dent puller kit (part number 77175) is said to save time and money by fixing minor dents without the hassle of costly repairs. Used for small, soft dents, the easy-to-use kit can help restore vehicle exteriors without causing any damage to paintwork. It is a gluepulling dent repair system, where a pulling pad is hot-glued to the dent. The dent pulling bridge then enables the glue pad to be slowly pulled up by turning the wing-nuts. This mechanism allows slow and precise lifting of dents.

Included in the kit is a hot-glue gun and a plastic pencil punch. The punch is used to knock down any high spots, ensuring a smooth finish. The kit also includes two glue sticks and a bottle of glue release agent.

A BRACE FOR BRAKES LASER TOOLS Two new additions have been added to the Laser Tools’ HGV brake caliper wrench range: the 30mm size (part number 8537) and the 21mm version (part number 8538).

They are 3/4in drive brake caliper wrenches for releasing and refitting brake caliper mounting bolts on commercial vehicles. The caliper mounting bolts are tightened to very high torque figures and these slogging wrenches, all designed with two impact striking faces, are designed to get the bolts loose quickly and easily.

These wrenches are all a six-point single-hex design and manufactured from S45C steel (hardness HRC 38-42), with a black phosphate finish. Designed to be used with a heavy hammer, the combination of wrench and hammering action provides a powerful and effective method for tackling tough or stubborn fasteners. Additionally, they can be used with a 3/4in drive for tightening, and if using a torque-wrench, a handy torque correction-factor formula is etched onto the side of the wrench.

BODY BELTS MIRKA A range of surface conditioning belts is being added to Mirka’s file belts line-up, offering flexible, non-woven file belts that are robust and highly adaptive, and leave a quality surface finish for the next step. The wide range of file belts is suitable for manufacturing, restoration, panel beating and bodyshop applications, together with Mirka’s pneumatic belt sander, which is available in two configurations, the PBS 10NV and PBS 13NV. The conditioning belts work especially well in cleaning up welds and removing rust and paint in difficult-toreach areas where a narrow file belt is the best solution. In addition, they are highly adaptive to intricate and radial contours, and can be used on all metals, from steel to aluminium, and on some composite materials such as fibreglass, epoxy resins and rigid plastic.

The conditioning belts work at a lower surface temperature than traditional file belts and leave a satin finish which is free from irregular scratches, making the next step easier for the operator. The sanding process produces no sparks, which is an important factor in many applications.

The new belts are available in a wide range of grits, from 80 (coarse) to 280 (very fine), to suit numerous different surfaces.
