A

trial has recently been launched to look into the effectiveness of a four-day working week for the UK. Around 30 companies are taking part in the sixmonth trial and the pilot scheme is being run by the 4 Day Week campaign, think tank Autonomy, and researchers at Cambridge University, Oxford University, and Boston College. But just how feasible would this be?

Luckily, trucks only run four days of the week anyway, so I’m sure there would be no issues implementing this in our industry. Sarcasm aside, the attainable benefits from the four-day working week are certainly appealing, but not necessarily practical in certain applications, with one of those obviously being the commercial vehicle industry. However, there are certainly lessons that can be learned from this scheme, especially at a time where the skills shortage continues to linger.

As jobs like commercial vehicle technicians and drivers are directly related to output, it’s impossible to implement the template of a four-day week without reducing this output. Therefore, more flexible and innovative solutions are required, as solutions like working from home that have become more and more common as a result of the pandemic just aren’t applicable to more hands-on jobs.

The quest to finding solutions, however, is something that harkens back to an ageold issue within our industry – a lack of infrastructure. These issues with infrastructure not only affect this search for solutions and the mobilisation of more skilled technicians across the overall workforce, but also the effectiveness of our switch to alternativelyfuelled vehicles and lowering emissions on the whole.

In this month’s issue of Commercial Vehicle Workshop, we look at numerous different ways that emissions can be tackled, from the vehicles to the workshops themselves. On page 22, Brett Edkins, Technical Manager at Eclipse Diagnostics, outlines why it is important to correctly identify an aftertreatment fault on a Volvo FM V4.

Meanwhile, Goodyear highlights the results of its Sustainable Reality Survey and what you can do to maximise your environmental efficiency on page 24, and Journey Energy Solutions puts this into practice on page 20 with a case study on a change in lighting allowing for a huge reduction in carbon emissions output.

So, while infrastructure will continue to hold the potential of this industry back, it can continue to exceed expectations with every challenge thrown its way.

NEWS Norbar Torque Tools to run virtual careers evenings To coincide with National Apprenticeship Week 2022, Banbury-based tools manufacturer Norbar Torque Tools is hosting a series of virtual careers evenings in February.

Commercial specialists announce rebrand Local commercial experts ST Fleet and TruckEast Specialist Services unite and rebrand as TE Fleet.

TruckEast in the commercial industry stretches back over 50 years, trading under various guises and has grown into the operation it is today. Since officially becoming TruckEast, the company has significantly invested to support customer demands including the formation of its Specialist Services, initially a tail-lift division, and the acquisition of Northampton based ST Fleet Services in 2019.

Following the success of last year’s virtual events, the company intends to showcase the opportunities for apprentices through online sessions in order to maintain social distancing as the Covid-19 situation continues.

The open evenings will be taking place on the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th February and attendees will be able to books slots between 6pm and 8pm to be able to discuss the job roles virtually with the company's Head of HR, Wanda Stewart-Lee, and Rob

Alderman from the Engineering Trust. On top of this, video tours of its manufacturing facilities will be available to offer insight into a modern manufacturing facility and the opportunities available for apprenticeship applicants.

Covering all the bases Both operations complement the company’s primary function as a commercial dealer in supporting local operators with their specialisms in trailer and ancillary equipment repairs and maintenance but have continued to carry their original names due to being well established at the time. Last month, both companies rebranded to TE Fleet, bringing the branding in line with the TruckEast group and amalgamating the two sub-divisions.

Volvo launches new electric truck, sign of things to come in UK Volvo Trucks leads the deployment of zero-tailpipe emission trucks across the world. In North America, the company now launches an enhanced version of its Volvo VNR Electric with up to 85% increased range and faster charging.

The VNR Electric is one of six all-electric heavy truck models and is specially designed for the North American market.

Sales start was in December 2020. The first generation of the VNR Electric had an operating range of up to 240 km (150 miles).

Now an enhanced version of the class eight

electric truck is launched, with an operational range of up to 440 km (275 miles) and increased energy storage of up to 565kWh. The improved performance is due to, among other things, improved battery design and a new six battery package option.

This also reduces the required charging time, as the 250kW charging capability provides an 80% charge in 90 minutes for the six-battery package, and 60 minutes for the four-battery version. Globally, the company has set the target that half of all trucks sold are electric by 2030.

ZF launches new division ZF has successfully launched its new division, Commercial Vehicle Solutions (CVS), combining its former Commercial Vehicle Technology and Commercial Vehicle Control Systems.

‘Best vehicle on fleet’ Artificial grass and decking specialist Witch Group has added a custom-built Renault Trucks C430 P8x2/6 to its eightstrong fleet Supplied by JDS Truck and Van, the C430 has a 8x2/6 chassis with a 9.1 meter curtain-sided body with fitted fall arrest, special side retainers to ease the load against the curtains and centre poles to enable the vehicle to carry decking, astro turf and carpets.

Transport Manager, John Carrol, explains how his latest purchasing decision was based on Witch Group’s experience of a 12plate, 26 tonne Renault Truck Premium, originally working in London: “The Premium is an all-rounder and gave us great insight into the capability and suitability of Renault trucks for our

particular operation. It gets into both large and small spaces and, quite frankly, is remarkable on fuel…So, when we were looking for our latest vehicle, we had every reason to go back to Renault Trucks.”

The full features It comes with sleeper cab and is fitted with a fridge, Roadpad+, navigation system, auto lights as well as safety features including the emergency hand brake system should the driver leave the cab without disengaging gear or the handbrake. The chassis has been adapted to a 8x2/6 with a single reduction gear solo drive axle conversion, an Optidriver direct drive gearbox, a single reduction drive axle, a steered 7.5t rear lift axle positioned to the rear of the drive axle as well as rear air suspension.

This makes its Commercial Vehicle Solutions the largest commercial vehicle supplier. It holds a leading position in the core technology fields of electromobility, digitisation as well as autonomous and networked driving.

Board member Wilhelm Rehm commented: “Thanks to our broad technological base, we can offer our customers the key solutions they need to transform their product portfolio from a single source. As a result, we are delivering a significant contribution to the ZF Group's profitable growth.”

In line with its ‘Next Generation Mobility’ corporate strategy, CVS is said to accelerate the company’s global growth strategy, being supported by around 25,000 employees and based across 61 locations in 28 countries.

NEWS Ben launches new website Offering tools and resources to help people struggling or in crisis, automotive charity Ben launches easier to navigate website for 2022.

Infrastructure overhaul needed on the road to zero New chair of ACEA Commercial Vehicle Board, Martin Lundstedt, has pleaded for an infrastructure ramp up, claiming 2022 to be a divisive year on the road to zero emissions.

The European Parliament and national governments are currently discussing the proposed Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), which will bring in binding targets for charging and refuelling infrastructure for each EU member state. The European Commission is also set to propose revised CO2 standards for heavy-duty vehicles later this year.

Designed to provide health and wellbeing information, advice and self-help for the automotive industry and its people after demand for support has reached an alltime high due to the Covid pandemic.

Online support in particular is in high demand, with Ben noting a massive 184% increase in web visitors from October 2016 compared to October 2021.

While the web address hasn’t changed, Ben’s website has undergone a huge transformation. The site is fully responsive across all devices and offers a simpler navigation, clearly signposting to self-help tools and resources. Tips, advice and tools are offered for a range of topics, such as money worries, physical and mental health, self-care tips, stress, sleep, loneliness, resilience, bereavement and more, with

further self-help content scheduled for development this year. The site also offers an enhanced user experience for those visiting the site, including those wishing to find out more about becoming a donor, who would like to participate in Ben’s latest fundraising events and opportunities, and for those seeking information about Ben care services.

“Battery electric trucks are ready to hit the road in large numbers, and fuelcell trucks will follow shortly,” explained Mr Lundstedt. “However, transport operators’ ability to invest in zero-emission trucks is directly linked to the availability of the right charging and refuelling infrastructure.” And he goes on to explain how this is something that needs addressing by the AFIR, concentrating on suitable infrastructure.

Policy makers need to fully understand that setting AFIR targets for heavy-duty vehicles now – ahead of the revision of the CO2 standards later in 2022 – will effectively predetermine the CO2 reductions that can be expected from road freight by the end of this decade.

DAF Trucks rolls out electric vehicle technician training DAF Trucks has rolled out dedicated training for EV technicians in anticipation of new deliveries of right-hand-drive LF Electric and CF Electric vehicles for UK customers.

The training is being delivered at its head office in Haddenham, Buckinghamshire. It forms part of a comprehensive programme of activities to prepare its dealer network for the uptake of EVs, with significant investment going into tooling and charging infrastructure, as well as training. Product training at the academy includes in-depth

EV maintenance and diagnosis procedures specific to its range of electric vehicles.

Training content comes in addition to IMI Level-3 Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair & Replacement training which all delegates on the DAF EV product training have already successfully completed.

“We’re making sure we’re fully prepared to support customers as they adopt DAF electric vehicles into their UK operations,” said Suzanne Moore, Training Manager.

“With the UK’s largest network of 135 dealer locations we can make sure that the necessary aftersales support is right where it needs to be.”

Flogas Britain makes steps towards carbon footprint improvements As part of its objective to drive operating efficiencies and realise carbon footprint improvements, Flogas Britain has continued the investment in its Cylinder fleet of vehicles, with the addition of 28 new Isuzu N55.150(N) 5.5 tonne narrow bodied trucks.

Fitted with specialist narrow aluminium cylinder bodies manufactured by Massey Truck Engineering, these new vehicles are rolling out into the Flogas Britain fleet, in further support of the company’s investment in its customer service proposition.

Explaining this latest fleet investment, Jackie Banks, Head of Fleet, said: “Our previous cylinder fleet had a high proportion of small footprint 3.5 tonne vehicles to deliver small loads into remote areas requiring narrow access. However, these vehicles presented challenges with payload, which impacted on their overall effectiveness and efficiency.”

Jackie continued: “After trialling the 5.5 tonne narrow bodied Isuzu N55 model in 2020, their performance was met with positive reviews from our driving teams and in addition, we were able to realise a significant increase in vehicle efficiency due to the increased payload.”

Why switch?

The result of the previous trials showed that Flogas Britain could reduce the amount of empty running through reducing the amount of reloading, thus eliminating wasted mileage and enabling them to schedule the vehicles far more efficiently.

HOW TO REPL ACE THE TIMING BELT ON AN IVECO DAILY In this month’s Schaeffler INA belt focus, Tim Adams, Schaeffler REPXPERT technical trainer and belt system specialist, runs through a timing belt installation on the popular Iveco Daily 111/Fiat Ducato 2.3 Diesel engine.

T

his engine has been used for many years, and it has always been recommended that a new water pump is installed at the same time as carrying out a timing belt system replacement. It is also considered best practice to replace the auxiliary belt (two in this instance) and all associated auxiliary system parts, as they need to be removed to access the timing belt drive. This particular unit has been in constant service from 2002 up to the present day and the expected labour time for this repair is 4.2hrs.

It is important to remember to advise vehicle owners that the FEAD belt system will have covered the same mileage as the timing belt drive, so will have been subjected to the same amount of usage and wear. Of further note is that the air conditioning drive belt has to be cut to be removed and therefore cannot be reused.

There are two different OE tensioner designs which have been fitted to this engine during its lifespan. Both are completely interchangeable, but it is essential that the correct set up instructions are used for the specific tensioner design that has been supplied. To identify the type of tensioner, the obvious visual differences are the number of cutouts on the installation eccentric plate. The tensioner pictured on the left in Fig.1 has three notches on the eccentric plate, the tensioner on the right has just one.

It is essential that the engine is left to cool to ambient (room) temperature before carrying out this repair, to ensure that no anomalies occur during tensioning. Allow approximately four hours for this, following the first of our “4T” principles: Temperature, Tools, Torque & Tension.

Raise and support the front of the vehicle, then remove both front wheels, wheel arch liners and undershield. Drain the cooling system. Remove both headlamps, radiator grille, front bumper, bonnet release cable and lock and bonnet shut panel. Next remove the cold air intake pipe, AC condenser from the radiator (if

fitted). Do not disconnect pipes.

Disconnect the coolant expansion tank multi-plug before removing the radiator and intercooler assembly. Remove both auxiliary drive belts, viscous fan, tensioner and idler. Slacken and tilt the alternator (the upper bolt will also need to be removed).

Support the engine and remove crankshaft pulley bolts and pulley, along with the timing belt cover (check for any damage to the cover). Now remove the camshaft cover blanking plugs along with the blanking plug from the cylinder block.

Note: During the installation process keep a sharp lookout for any oil or coolant leaks and double check that the timing cover is free from damage.

The next of our 4Ts is Tools. Always use the correct engine locking tools.

Turn the crankshaft to just before TDC No 1 cylinder and fit the crankshaft locking pin tool 99360615 (Fig. 2). Turn the crankshaft clockwise until it stops against the locking pin. Insert both camshaft locking pins tool 99360614 (Fig. 3).

Slacken the timing belt tensioner pulley bolt and move the tensioner away from the belt, then lightly tighten the bolt and remove the timing belt. Install a new water

pump. Check that the camshaft and crankshaft locking tools are located correctly. Using a counterhold tool (Fig. 4), hold the camshaft sprocket (do not rely on camshaft locking tools alone, as damage could be caused to the camshafts).

Release the sprocket until it rotates freely without tilting.

Using a locking pin tool 99360608, locate the sprocket at the three o’clock position (Fig. 5).

Loosen the tensioner bolt and, using an Allen key, rotate the installation eccentric plate to the position shown in Fig. 6 before fitting a new belt, aligning any timing belt marks (if present) on camshaft and crankshaft sprockets. Then remove camshaft sprocket locking pin and slacken the tensioner bolt.

Step ��� Using an allen key, rotate the tensioner installation eccentric anticlockwise until the left hand notch aligns with the dot on the tensioner body (Fig. 7).

Tighten tensioner bolt to 36Nm (±4Nm).

This is the third of our 4T principles: Torque.

Three-notch Tensioner Setup

Step ��� Counterhold the camshaft sprocket and tighten bolt to 130Nm, then remove the crankshaft and camshaft locking pins and rotate the engine in the direction of rotation for eight full revolutions.

Note: Don’t allow the crankshaft to rotate anti-clockwise.

As before, on the last revolution bring the crank up to just before TDC and fit the crankshaft locking pin. Turn the crank until it touches against the pin. Ensure the camshaft locking pins can be easily inserted.

If not, repeat the installation procedure.

Step ��� Slacken the tensioner bolt and use an Allen key to turn the tensioner until the central notch window aligns with the dot on

the tensioner body (Fig.9). Tighten bolt to 36Nm (±4Nm). This should correctly tension the belt – the final 4T principle.

Step ��� Remove the camshaft and crankshaft locking pins and rotate the engine in direction of rotation for two full revolutions until just before TDC and insert crankshaft locking pin. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until it touches the pin.

Ensure the camshaft pins can be easily inserted. If not, repeat the tensioning procedure.

Remove the locking tools and reinstall all components in reverse order and tighten crankshaft pulley bolts to 30Nm. Fill and vacuum bleed the cooling system using new coolant in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications and recommendations.

Always carry out a full road test to ensure the heater works correctly and the coolant level remains steady.

Step ��� Turn Allen key anti-clockwise until the single notch goes past the white dot and covers it completely (Fig. 8), which is the high-tension position.

KTS TRUCK MADE ESI: PART 10 In the penultimate part of this series, Bosch walks CVW through the ESI Ticket feature.

O

ne really helpful feature of ESI Truck is the ESI Ticket. This is a link between you and the online Bosch ESI service team. An ESI Ticket can be used if you encounter a problem with a feature, think some information might be missing, or if some data looks rather odd.

For example, if following the troubleshooting steps didn’t solve the problem, then let Bosch know and it will review your information and its original instructions and hopefully find a fix for you. Just one small act by you will be beneficial for the thousands of ESI Truck users across the world!

Raising an ESI Ticket is pretty straightforward. If you do come across an issue, this will be when you are connected to the vehicle – do not disconnect the KTS before sending the ESI Ticket, the ticket will need to gather all the data it can from the vehicle to help the Bosch ESI service team.

When you select the ESI Ticket function from the main menu (Fig. 1), a new window opens which will allow you to add in all the

required information (Fig. 2). If you have filled in the Company Data fields in the settings of ESI Truck, this will automatically populate the first section of the window.

Working your way through the rest of the form, inputting the data as you go, will build up a picture of the vehicle and your diagnostic process so far so that the Bosch ESI service team can understand the problem. The two fields under Description

is where you can give as many details as possible to fully explain the issue and even suggest a solution.

The vehicle data will automatically be filled, as will the program and system tabs, and the attachments tab is where you can add any other information which you think might be helpful for the Bosch ESI service team – the more information it has, the better Bosch can understand the problem (Fig. 3, 4, 5 & 6).

You can preview the contents of the ESI Ticket before you send it and then you can send it off to the Bosch ESI service team.

This team will review the ticket and if it is

a known issue, you will get an answer fairly quickly but if more detailed investigation needs to be done, then your ticket will be sent to the ESI development team who will review it and provide feedback as quickly as possible.

In the next and final edition of KTS Truck made ESI, we will put everything we have shown you so far into action with a complete diagnostic case study.

HEAV Y VEHICLE TESTING REVIEW: WHAT’S BEING DONE? Neil Barlow, Head of Vehicle Policy and Engineering at DVSA, discusses the key findings of the Heavy Vehicle Testing Review, and how they are being tackled as we move into 2022.

A

s you know, the current model of annual (MOT) testing has DVSA delivering the MOT test for heavy vehicle operators in privately owned Authorised Testing Facilities (ATFs). So, it’s a model that needs a close partnership to make it work. In 2020, this led to the Department for Transport working with DVSA and industry representatives on the Heavy Vehicle Testing Review. Its purpose was to review the current model for heavy vehicle MOT testing and look at how we could improve it.

Key findings

The review made six recommendations, but how have these been addressed? It’s fair to say the main theme running through it is about making sure there is the right number of vehicle standards assessors to deliver the flexibility that industry wants.

Other recommendations include things like how to end the temporary suspension on opening new ATFs and how to schedule vehicle standards assessors to ATFs.

Starting to change

The first change to come from the review was to open the market, by ending the pause on applications for new ATFs. For this first phase, DVSA set some criteria for applications, so that it didn’t adversely impact existing ATFs. But, it will begin to improve the breadth of the service.

In early June 2021, DVSA started accepting applications meeting these criteria. Where these met the criteria, it opened new sites. Where applications didn’t quite meet the criteria, it provided feedback to help applicants.

Since then, DVSA has had 38 applications since lifting the ATF moratorium, and two sites are close to opening.

Scheduling

DVSA also talked to operators and ATFs about how to resolve the balance between how far ahead ATFs can book vehicle standards assessors, against the short notice flexibility that customers – both ATFs and vehicle operators – may need.

This solution is really important because getting things joined up between DVSA and ATFs for the end customer – vehicle operators, leasing companies and other vehicle users – is key to making the service work better. DVSA knows from the Heavy Vehicle Testing Review that the current way of scheduling testing hours to ATFs does not always let operators book as far ahead as they might want to. But, it also knows that flexibility to change things at shorter notice can be important.

So, DVSA has been carrying out some deeper research into this, through focus groups with ATFs and vehicle operators.

The sessions have looked at: how tests are booked, how the process works for customers and how it fits in with their maintenance regimes.

Measuring performance

DVSA delivers the heavy vehicle MOT testing service to vehicle operators in partnership with ATFs. So, the organisation

The things it measures, like the utilisation of its vehicle standards assessors and how often it cancels appointments with ATFs, are important. But they are not the be all and end all. So, a broader set of measures are needed. Transparency is key to making this work, so DVSA will continue to be open about how it is doing.

‘Find an ATF’ service

The review took place during a period of high demand for MOT testing, as the profile of the exemptions led to a peak in demand.

So, in parallel to the review, DVSA developed the ‘Find an ATF’ service. This allows ATFs to share information about short-term MOT test availability and helps vehicle operators to find a test at a nearby ATF. As we again enter another busy period, Neil hopes ATFs will use the service and share information about their capacity.

Hopefully, this will help vehicle operators who are finding it hard to get an MOT test.

DVSA is also keen to hear feedback from

vehicle operators and ATFs about whether this is a service that goes far enough. For example:

What’s been learned?

DVSA set out to learn more over six months ago now, so what progress has been made? Well, the conversations have been really useful. It has heard things it was already thinking about, but also had some helpful and challenging insight in other areas. And it is planning to run more focus groups to build on this feedback, particularly with vehicle users.

Two key themes have come out so far.

One is around certainty, which is something that’s critical for many operators. This is understandable, because vehicles and

understandable, because vehicles and trailers need to be part of a planned and preventative maintenance system. So, having certainty about when and where tests are scheduled is important.

The other theme is about flexibility. This can be particularly important for smaller operators; for example, if the ownership of a vehicle changes at short notice, or where a vehicle ends up in a different location.

So how does this help DVSA to review its process for scheduling testing hours to ATFs? Normally, it books testing hours in quarterly periods. But this is not always helpful for the certainty and flexibility which vehicle operators and ATFs want.

Where will we be in the next year?

By August, Neil wants the DVSA – working together with industry – to have addressed all the recommendations in the review. It will either have implemented a solution or have a clear view about where it is going.

“I want us all to get the high-quality heavy vehicle MOT testing service that we need,” says Neil.

For vehicle operators, this means being able to easily get an MOT test that can sit seamlessly with their routine planned and preventative maintenance, so that they can go about the important business of moving goods and people around the country.

DVSA delivers the MOT test in partnership with ATFs, who are responsible for enabling the service through booking vehicles in – and often delivering this as part of maintenance and repair work. So, DVSA needs to make sure that the way it works helps ATFs provide a quality service to vehicle operators. No one party can do this alone and DVSA’s work with ATFs is critical to delivering the service.

“We also need to make sure that all of our colleagues in DVSA come along on the journey with us,” comments Neil. “It’s a period of change and opportunity as we introduce more flexibility and resource into the service to make it better meet customer needs.”

A longer term view

One of the things Neil is keen to look at is whether DVSA can move to a longer term view of planning and confirming testing resource. This could mean it agrees testing hours with ATFs over a rolling 13-month period, for example.

There would need to be a process to enable short-term adjustments, whether that’s for the ATF to add some extra days, or maybe to cancel some. Hopefully this type of approach would enable ATFs to give vehicle users the service that they need – offering certainty, but also enabling flexibility.

DVSA is continuing to carry out research with ATFs and vehicle operators. And it would welcome any feedback on the information contained within this article.

The key thing is that the new approach ensures it best meets customer needs.

In terms of timing, DVSA wants to develop these ideas early this year – so it can share the detailed proposals with you.

The reality is that any changes cannot happen overnight, particularly as it has already confirmed some of the quarterly booking process for this year.

“I think people will understand we want to get this right if we’re going to make a significant change,” concludes Neil.

Looking ahead

While much of DVSA’s time has been focused on scheduling, it has also been looking at the way it measures performance and its overall staffing model. DVSA will provide updates on this in due course.

You can do more than looking at your fleet to reduce overall emissions, as the lighting in your workshop could be contributing more than you realise. Journey Energy Solutions outlines just how this can be helped.

ight commercial retail sites operated

by UK Mercedes-Benz dealership Rygor have been equipped with the latest LED lighting systems courtesy of a comprehensive upgrade initiative implemented by Journey Energy Solutions.

Established to help organisations get closer to Net Zero emissions without the burden of up-front capital outlay, Journey designs, installs, and maintains carefully tailored, energy-efficient LED lighting systems.

The starting point for the recent project was the realisation by the auto dealership that the existing lighting needed to be upgraded in order to reduce operational costs and carbon emissions.

The lighting at three sites in particular – Heathrow, Swindon and Westbury – was also increasingly unfit for purpose and subject to frequent costly replacements. But during the course of conversations with the specialist energy solutions company that

provided the upgrade, the scope of the scheme was expanded to include eight van and truck retail showrooms: the three aforementioned sites, as well as Chilcompton, Kidderminster, Newbury, Nuneaton and Oxford.

In terms of choosing a partner to implement the lighting upgrade and provide support post-installation, there were multiple key factors that worked in the favour of Journey. These included the ability to start work immediately, maintain a seamless transition between each site, and work in such a way that any operational disruption was kept to a minimum.

For example, to avoid negative impact during installation in the active workshop service areas, advanced notice was given to each service manager so they could schedule work on particular days – ensuring that any possible conflicts were avoided.

The outcomes

The upgrade programme took three months with each of Rygor’s sites now featuring a complementary blend of the latest LED lighting products.

As well as carrying out all the design and installation work, Journey has also been contracted for six years to provide ongoing service and maintenance support – giving further reassurance to the Rygor team and allowing the dealer’s internal technical resources to be directed elsewhere.

Whilst the figure could rise further due to a greatly reduced need for replacements and associated maintenance, it is already predicted that Rygor will benefit from an impressive reduction in its carbon emissions of 980 tonnes and an energy cost saving of £648,514 over the term of the contract. This would be a huge step forward for any business at any time, but in the midst of an unpredictable economic cycle and with

climate change concerns escalating, it has a truly transformative potential.

In addition to the energy savings, the improved quality of the lighting – especially in the most badly affected areas at the sites deemed most urgently in need of an upgrade – has been widely commented upon by employees and visitors. In particular, feedback from personnel who have been employed in the company’s workshops for many years has been very strong, with many pinpointing the much more sympathetic and consistent nature of the lighting.

Brett Edkins, Technical Manager at Eclipse Diagnostics, explains how to identify and correct an aftertreatment fault on a Volvo FM V4.

AFTERTREATMENT FAULT ON A VOLVO FM V4 The Problem

A Volvo FM V4 has an ACM (Exhaust gas treatment system) warning light on the instrument panel and has failed to clear as well as putting the vehicle into inducement (Derate) mode. As a result of this the vehicle has had to be brought into the workshop so the engineers can use the Eclipse Jaltest diagnostic tool to help identify and rectify the fault within the vehicle.

Initial Assessment

The engineer will firstly make an initial diagnosis of the vehicle by carrying out a full system scan with the Eclipse Jaltest diagnostic tool this will allow him to look at all fault codes in each system weather they are present or historic in the diagnostic memory and these fault codes may be able to assist us with the cause of the exhaust gas aftertreatment fault.

Identifying faults on many modern commercial vehicles is increasingly difficult given the rising levels of technology employed by manufacturers across all aspects of the vehicles including trailer units.

This increasing technology imbedded in vehicles means that users are having to adopt increasingly sophisticated equipment to enable their engineers to maintain performance and effectiveness in the workshops and when out on remote call-outs.

The Eclipse Jaltest package has all the requirements to address the technological advances and as an example, the analysis of a Volvo FM V4 model shows how the Eclipse Jaltest package is becoming the go-to diagnostic solution for the commercial vehicle industry.

There is one active fault code which is an exhaust gas aftertreatment fault but it is active in the engine ECU. The code which is present is P207F FMI 9A and this fault code is referring to a reductant quality fault which could be due to all sorts of problems.

This fault code could be due to the quality of the AdBlue being incorrect or a blockage within the AdBlue system or even an exhaust leakage.

Jaltest Analysis

The Jaltest software can take the fault analysis on the vehicle right down to the component as well as being able to show the necessary wiring diagrams, operation diagrams and measurements for the specific vehicle.

So in this case the engineer will be able to access the fault code troubleshooting and will then be able to follow step-by-step instructions of how to diagnose the fault and repair it. The engineer will then be able to carry out system checks of the AdBlue system and also view live measurements to look at sensors and sensor voltages.

For any wiring faults the engineer comes across, they can also look at wiring diagrams and be able to get extra information which will explain how to check appropriately and what readings are need for each sensor.

Correcting the Fault

First of all the engineer would do step one of the fault code troubleshooting and that is to check the urea concentration of the

AdBlue and this can be done by viewing the measurements. In this case the urea concentration was perfect.

The next step for the engineer is to go to step two of the troubleshooting which is to carry out an AdBlue dosing test to check for any leaks or blockages and this can be carried out with the Eclipse Jaltest diagnostic tool. They will be able to carry this out in system checks and this will activate the pump allowing AdBlue to flow through the pipes. They will be able to see what comes out in a certain amount of time and will be able to compare it to manufacture specifications.

In this instance the engineer carried out an AdBlue dosing test and found they were getting no AdBlue fluid through the lines. The engineer firstly inspected the lines and determined there was no leaks or broken pipes and the other options were either an AdBlue pump failure or the lines were blocked.

The engineer firstly disconnected the AdBlue line from the injector and upon inspection they found the injector to be clogged which would be why no AdBlue was coming out of it. Then the engineer was able to carry out another AdBlue dosing test and this time the engineer had the correct amount of fluid come through the pipes.

“As a result of there being an exhaust gas aftertreatment fault, it has put a mileage countdown on the dash and also put it into the inducement mode.”

The Eclipse Jaltest diagnostic tool has the ability to get it out of inducement mode and get rid of the mileage countdown and this has to be done by carrying out a SCR system reset of inducement mode.

Once the engineer has carried this out they are able to road test the vehicle and ensure there is no lack of power or other faults within the vehicle.

s the only point of contact between the vehicle and the road, the rolling resistance of a truck’s tyres contributes between 20-35% to its fuel consumption. By keeping the rolling resistance of their tyres as low as possible, hauliers can directly impact a vehicle’s fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions.

For instance, improving the rolling resistance of a tractor tyre by switching from a C to a B EU Tyre Label for fuel efficiency will reduce the truck CO2 emission by 2-3%.

A reduction of 2% in CO2 translates into a saving of about 1 tonne CO2 emissions and 400L of fuel per truck, per year.

If a 100-vehicle fleet switches from a Clabel to a fuel-efficient B-label tyre like FuelMax Endurance this would represent a potential saving of 100 tonnes of CO2 emissions and 40,000 litres of fuel, per year.

Here are just some of the factors than can influence your fleets efficiency, and how to make sure you’re getting the most out of them:

Tyre pressure

When in use, maintaining the correct pressure is crucial to ensuring that the tyre’s optimal rolling resistance is maintained.

Ultimately, trucks with under-inflated tyres will consume more fuel and their tread will wear down more quickly, meaning that they are more expensive and less sustainable to run, and will even need to be replaced sooner than those that are properly maintained.

The Goodyear Sustainable Reality Survey revealed that 61% of UK fleets have put formalised sustainability objectives in place.

But what do you need to look out for to ensure you’re maximising your environmental efficiency?

It can be tempting to overlook tyre pressure maintenance, purely because of the amount of time that it can take. However, smart solutions such as Goodyear’s Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and Drive-Over Reader (DOR) can be helpful in this regard, not only allowing fleets to keep a constant eye on their tyre pressures but also save a huge amount of time. But by using the DOR, a customer who struggled before to find time for tyre pressure maintenance told us that they were able to monitor all 50 of their vehicles within an hour.

Right tyres, right places

There are very good reasons for steer, drive, and trailer axles to be fitted with different tyres. In the case of a fully loaded truck, each individual tyre may be carrying multiple tonnes. With each axle performing a different function, it makes a great deal of sense when carrying so much weight that the tyres fitted to those axles should also be designed with different purposes in mind.

Having the correct tyre fitted to each axle not only offers safety benefits though, but performance too. Improving fuel efficiency

is ultimately about improving grip and reducing drag. If a fleet operator fits tyres to the wrong axles, and effectively tries to use them in a way for which they aren’t designed, they can’t expect those tyres to function at their best.

Wheel alignment

The impact of wheel alignment on fuel efficiency is difficult to measure, as there are many factors, such as aerodynamics and variance of hooking the trailer, that can have a significant impact.

However, we do know that for a vehicle’s alignment to not follow the manufacturer’s specs can affect tyre wear, as side forces and slip will influence the contact that the tyre has with the road. With that in mind, the objective should always be to have the wheels roll parallel and in a straight line, in order to minimise friction and ensure that there is the correct amount of pressure on the tyre.

ne of Stertil Koni’s long-standing distributors, CCS Garage Equipment, has supplied 30 wireless mobile column vehicle lifts to Biffa Waste Services for use at various locations throughout Cornwall.

Following responses to an in-depth residents’ survey, Cornwall Council accepted a bid from Biffa Waste Services to provide comprehensive recycling and rubbish collections throughout the county. The award of the contract then led to Biffa Waste Services commissioning CCS to supply Stertil Koni heavy-duty vehicle lifting equipment to safely raise recycling and waste collection vehicles at Biffa workshops in St Austell, Hayle, Bodmin and Newham.

A total of 30 Stertil Koni wireless mobile column vehicle lifts, type ST1075FWA, were supplied as five sets of six columns. Each lifting column provides a safe lifting capacity of 7.5 tonnes which means that, when used as a set of six columns, the combined lifting capacity is an impressive 45 tonnes.

These latest generation lifts incorporate Stertil Koni’s revolutionary ebright Smart Control System which allows workshop staff to operate the lifts from any column in the set. Crucially, the ebright’s wireless mesh networking system eliminates any possibility of communication problems between individual columns when numerous sets are used in the same building.

Featuring full-colour touch screen consoles, the ebright Smart Control System has been designed and developed to simplify operation by providing maximum visual information about every lifting operation - all at the fingertips of the workshop technicians.

For added safety and performance, the ebright Smart Control System also shows how many columns in the set are being used.

The ST1075FWA heavy-duty lifts are powered by long-life deep cycle batteries which provide optimum performance for at least a week on average before recharging is necessary. Also, battery life is prolonged due to the fact that, unlike a screw-lift, power is only used to raise the vehicle therefore less time is spent recharging the lifts, which is carried out via a 230v single phase supply.

New heights

All columns incorporate Stertil Koni’s maintenance-free, synthetic runner wheel system, which is self-lubricating, and the system is covered by a lifetime guarantee.

An integral advanced hydraulic lifting system incorporates a microprocessorcontrolled synchronisation feature to ensure safe, smooth and precise movement at all times, even in the event of extremely uneven load distribution. Safety is further enhanced by an independent mechanical locking system, incorporated into each column, which allows technicians to

securely lock the lift to prevent a vehicle from being inadvertently lowered.

The absence of power and communication cables also means that setup time is greatly reduced, making the system fully operational much more quickly. In addition, the ST1075FWA provides a maximum lifting height of 1.85 metres which is reached in just 75 seconds thereby making it one of the fastest commercial vehicle lifts available.

TESTING ALL AVENUES TotalKare highlights two companies that have benefitted from its workshop equipment, including the Y-Mech lift – the largest in its portfolio.

THOMAS HARDIE COMMERCIALS

Thomas Hardie Commercials has upgraded its vehicle lifting capabilities at two of its sites in the Northwest with assistance from workshop equipment expert TotalKare.

The main distributor for Volvo Trucks and Volvo Bus and Coach throughout the Northwest, North Wales, and Lancashire operates six franchised sites offering a full range of vehicle services. These are complemented by its wholly-owned division Thomas Hardie Vehicle Solutions, based in Chorley, which offers vehicle painting, hydraulic kit fitting and other specialised aftermarket equipment, as well as truck and trailer refurbishment.

With help from its long-term workshop equipment partner TotalKare (Thomas Hardie currently runs some 22 sets of Totalkare’s T8DC mobile column lift across its sites), the Volvo specialist has now introduced a Y-Mech vehicle lift at each of its Trafford Park and Preston sites, they are both fully galvanised

wash bay solution lifts to replace a failing outdoor vehicle lift installation. At Trafford Park, the workshop is moving away from its traditional use of vehicle inspection pits for wash bay, favouring a permanent vehicle lifting facility instead.

The newest addition to TotalKare’s comprehensive range of heavy duty vehicle lifting solutions, the Y-Mech lift can be supplied in a range of weight capacities from 25,000kg to 35,000kg, with platform lengths ranging from six to 13 metres. The lifts at Preston and Trafford Park are both rated to lift 25,000kg with a nine-metre bed length.

Available with drive on/off and drive through options, the Y-Mech lift can be surface- or recess-mounted into the floor to suit operator preference, and feature rollover and roll-back protection to keep the vehicle in place while being raised off the ground. It can be upgraded with manual or air-powered axle jack and lighting if required and as mentioned above, is also available as a galvanised option for wash bay and outdoor applications.

Both lifts will be supported by a comprehensive TotalKare aftersales service contract with two routine service engineer visits a year.

GRIST ENVIRONMENTAL

One of the leading waste management businesses in the UK, Grist Environmental operates a large fleet of specialist vehicles.

Due to the demands of vehicle repair and maintenance, it was key for Grist Environmental to have the latest testing equipment to keep up with the demands of its workshop.

TotalKare’s mobile brake tester is DVSA-approved and can accommodate up to 20,000kg per axle and a number of wheel bases up to 4,000mm. The brake tester comes with a tablet device which uses a virtual display to show all the readings of the test, and a touchscreen-based remote control, enabling brake tests to be conducted from the driver’s seat in a matter of minutes. The mobile brake tester can be placed on asphalt, concrete and even on uneven gravel, sand or dirt, which is why Grist Environmental has opted to use the brake tester outdoors for its vehicle testing.

Headlamp aim is the most common failure item at annual test for both HGVs and PSVs. TotalKare can provide both manual and electronic headlamp testers to accommodate all workshop solutions. All electronic headlamp testers are fitted with capabilities to be connected to the MOT testing service when legislation changes in the future.

By adding a brake and headlamp testing to their workshop, along with an existing set of TotalKare mobile column lifts, Grist Environmental is now further equipped to provide repair and maintenance work on vehicles. WHAT IS INDUC TION HEATING AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? We’ve regularly featured the Mini-Ductor Venom induction heating tool and how it can improve workshop health and safety, save time and reduce costs. However, we wanted to find out more about induction heating technology, so we asked Alicia Hawkins, Marketing Manager for Induction Innovations, manufacturers of the Inductor tools, to provide a technical guide.

‘‘I

nduction heating is used to bond, harden or soften metals or other conductive materials and offers an attractive combination of speed, consistency and control. Invisible, flameless heat is transferred to the product via electromagnetic waves, the part never comes into direct contact with any flame and the coil itself does not get hot.

“Electromagnetic induction is a magnetic flux through a surface bounded by the conductor. The solid-state RF power supply sends an AC current through a copper coil and the part to be heated is placed inside the coil. The coil serves as the transformer primary and the part to be heated becomes a short circuit secondary. When a metal part is placed within the induction coil and enters the magnetic field, circulating eddy currents are induced within the part. These

eddy currents flow against the electrical resistivity of the metal, generating precise and localised heat without any direct contact between the part and the coil.”

The efficiency of an induction heating system for a specific application depends on several factors: the characteristics of the part itself, the design of the induction coil, the capacity of the power supply, and the degree of temperature change required for the application:

n Metal or plastic parts

Induction heating works only with conductive materials, such as ferrous and some non-ferrous metals. Plastics and other non-conductive materials can often be heated indirectly by first heating a conductive metal susceptor which transfers heat to the non-conductive material.

n Magnetic or non-magnetic materials

It is easier to heat magnetic materials. In addition to the heat induced by eddy currents, magnetic materials also produce heat through what is called the hysteresis effect. During the induction heating process, magnetics offer resistance to the rapidly alternating electrical fields, and this causes enough friction to provide a secondary source of heat. This effect ceases to occur at temperatures above the ‘Curie’ point – the temperature at which a magnetic material loses its magnetic properties.

n Thick or thin

With conductive materials, about 80% of the heating effect occurs on the surface or ‘skin’ of the part; the heating intensity diminishes as the distance from the surface increases.

So small or thin parts generally heat more quickly than large thick parts, especially if the larger parts need to be heated all the way through.

n Resistivity

If you use the exact same induction process to heat two same size pieces of steel and copper, the results will be quite different. Why? Steel – along with carbon, tin and tungsten – has high electrical resistivity. Because these metals strongly resist the current flow, heat builds up quickly. Low resistivity metals such as copper, brass and aluminium take longer to heat.

Resistivity increases with temperature, so a very hot piece of steel will be more receptive to induction heating than a cold piece.

n Induction coil design

The varying magnetic field required for induction heating is developed through the flow of alternating current in the coil. So, coil design is one of the most important aspects of the overall system. A welldesigned coil provides the proper heating pattern for your part and maximizes the efficiency of the induction heating power supply, while still allowing easy insertion and removal of the part.

omplementing the two-post lift series, which already boasts equipment capable of lifting threeand-a-half and five-and-a-half tonnes respectively, their ‘big brother’ can handle vehicles with a gross weight of a staggering six-and-a-half tonnes.

Like its predecessors, the MA Star 6.5 offers five-star safety thanks to its triple layer of protection: spindle nut package with self-locking thread, patent-pending ‘giraffe’ nut breakage detection and motor brake. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY Wayne McCluskey is the Technical Training Manager at ZF Aftermarket, which supplies the automotive aftermarket with Lemförder and TRW steering components. Here, he reviews some indications that attention to the steering system is needed and provides a checklist of items that deserve close examination.

F

or technicians servicing commercial vehicles on a daily basis, identifying and rectifying potential safety defects is a routine but vital part of the job to ensure that a vehicle will pass a DVSA annual inspection or fleet compliance check.

Exposed to the elements, the joints and linkages within the safety-critical steering assembly are prime candidates for wear and damage in service. Here is how technicians should approach steering system examination.

Vehicle behaviour suggesting remedial action is required

Road wander requires the driver to continually compensate for changes in vehicle direction that occur independently of driver input. This can be caused by worn or loose components in the steering linkage, where track rods, drag links, pitman arms and steering gears move randomly within any clearance that has developed.

Wheel shimmy can also be caused by worn linkages. Ongoing oscillations in the steer axle can cause vibrations in the

steering wheel, and the steering may also take longer to return to centre.

Oversteering – or ‘darting’ – manifests itself as a delayed reaction to the steering wheel being turned. Even carrying out a simple manoeuvre like changing lanes can become a challenge for the driver, who turns the steering wheel to little or no response from the vehicle, so applies additional lock. The vehicle suddenly responds to this exaggerated movement by darting across the road. Darting is typically due to a partial seizure somewhere in the steering system.

Preparation and precautions

Prior to inspection, clean all joints and mating parts of the steering linkage with dry rags (no solvents), being careful not to damage sealing boots. Any components found to be in unsatisfactory condition during the following procedures should be considered for replacement. After dismantling, always replace mounting hardware such as bolts, nuts, and cotter pins, etc. Do not weld, heat or forcibly align

components. Observe the vehicle manufacturer’s tightening torques for fastenings. Unless otherwise stated, carry out the following operations with the weight of the vehicle on the wheels.

Drag link and tie rod

n Inspect the hollow tube of the tie rod or the drag link adjuster for deformation – for example, crushing by vice grips.

n While an assistant turns the steering wheel from lock to lock, feel for movement between the threaded part of the tie rod and its tube or adjustment sleeve. Any play here suggests the thread is damaged, so replace one or both of the components. n Check the condition of the clamp and pinch bolt – the bolt must be straight, and both bolt head and nut must bear tightly on the clamp. Pitting due to corrosion on the bolt, nut or clamp should be no deeper than 0.5mm. If any

of these criteria are not met, replace the affected component.

n When reassembling, adjust the tie rod length either by turning the connecting rod or the adjusting sleeve. Adjust the length of the drag link such that it can be inserted in the steering lever or steering column without tension.

Ball joint

n Inspect the housing, shaft and end cap of the ball point, paying special attention to crimped edges and end cap walls. Pitting or corrosion should be no deeper than 1.0mm.

n Inspect the sealing boot surface for holes or cracks. Apply sufficient hand pressure to distort the boot – a negligible seepage of grease at its opening is permissible but there should be none elsewhere. Any damage to the sealing boot indicates that replacement of the joint is required, as water entering the joint can lead to imminent failure. n Check that clamping and retaining rings are present, undamaged, and correctly pressing the sealing boot against the housing and/or stud.

n Measure the axial play of the ball joint.

Two types of Lemförder ball joint are typically found in the vehicle parc; an older version with a flat sealing cap and the current version with a domed sealing cap (Fig 1). A spring provides preload in the old type, whereas the latter type is

preloaded by a profiled rubber O-ring.

To measure wear in the earlier design of ball joint, use Lemförder testing tool LMI 27351.01, following the directions supplied with it (Fig 2). The current design of Lemförder ball joints cannot be accurately tested with this tool; instead, use a dial gauge mounted on a stand with a magnetic base to measure the axial clearance of the ball joint (Fig 3).

n If a defect is identified in any component of a ball joint (e.g. the cup seal or ball pin), replace the entire joint.

n Check for play between the torque rod bracket or bush and mounting points.

n Check that the fixing bolts are not loose, broken or missing.

n Check for stiffness in the steering return or failure to return perfectly to the straight-ahead position.

n Inspect the metal parts of the bush for cracks or other damage/deformation.

n Check for missing, broken or incorrectly seated circlips. n Inspect the torque rod bracket for fractures, or cracks that could develop into a fracture.

n Note the number of compensating discs when removing a torque rod, and relocate them in the same position during reassembly. Replace any damaged compensating discs. Torque rods must be replaced in pairs.

n Raise the front of the vehicle to unload the steering axle, and then check for excessive axial play between the steering knuckle and the body of the front axle (Fig 4).

n If either condition is evident, replace the king pin and its bearing components.

Incorporating these inspection elements into the routine maintenance schedule not only provides reassurance for the vehicle operator, but is also a useful additional income stream for the workshop.

‘OIL IS OIL’?

T

he notion that ‘oil is oil’ is wrong on all counts. Transmission oils, also known as gear oils, help to keep all the moving parts lubricated and are therefore a vital part of any gearbox.

It’s tempting to think that manufacturers are being overly fussy when specifying particular oil grades, or that they have a vested interest in choosing one product over another. However, they do it for a very important reason. Engines and components have specific requirements for lubricants, and ignoring the recommended products can often have dire consequences. So, as a technician, what do you need to know?

OEM specification

In short, it’s crucial to know the OEM specification and viscosity details to determine which product to use on each vehicle model.

Where to find the spec

There are various places where you may find which gear oil to use. Look in the manufacturer’s handbook, a workshop manual, or sometimes the basic information is on the gearbox unit itself. Otherwise, look online – including Total UK Lubricant’s Lub Advisor: www.total.co.uk/lub-advisor.

A technician’s day is never a straightforward one.

There are always a huge number of decisions to make; all based on the individual requirements of whichever model is being worked on. Manufacturers specify a full range of recommendations for replacement parts and consumables, and this also comes down to transmission oils. But oil is oil, right? Total Lubricants tells all.

“For example, whilst Scania recommends the same specification oil for transmission and axles, most other manufacturers do not, so using the same to save time or money can be a costly mistake.”

For commercial fleets and vehicles, it’s crucial to get it right. We all know the true cost of a vehicle being off the road due to repair or for maintenance. There’s also the very real danger of invalidating the

TESTING YOUR REACTIONS S teering component wear can manifest in a manner of ways, including vibration, noise and tyre wear, all of which negatively impact efficient vehicle performance.

Reaction rods work alongside V-stays and other main components of the suspension within the steering network, to transmit the functions of an axle and improve drivability. They ensure optimal axle location within the steering frame and provide driving, brake and torque support, resulting in ideal wheel control and a high level of driving comfort.

KAMASA SPANNER SET Torx (star) bolts and setscrews are increasingly used in the automotive sector due to their efficient drive system which claims to offers more consistent torque application and lower assembly times at point of manufacture. Schaeffler has launched its new generation of FAG plummer block housings, offering enhanced efficiency in a cost-effective solution. Suitable for rolling bearings of various diameters and widths, and for shafts from 20mm-160mm, they are made of high-quality flake graphite cast iron. They can be used in conveyor systems, crushers and mills, drive drums, fans and turbines across a multitude of industries. For particularly demanding applications they can also be supplied in spheroidal graphite cast iron. Seal options include double lip, felt, V-ring, Taconite and labyrinth variants, which are complemented by a choice of plastic or steel covers.

The product also provides a modular solution as their unique housing geometry results in optimised load distribution in the rolling bearing. This is said to significantly reduce bearing wear and offers up to 50 per cent longer operating life, while indentations indicating the shaft and bearing centres allow rapid and simple housing alignment, saving mounting time and operating costs.

The new Imron Fleet Line DTM NonSanding Primer Surfacer P60X for commercial vehicles from Cromax is designed to be applied directly to metal.

It eliminates the need for a two-stage build-up, aiming to increase productivity and allowing CVs to get back on the road faster. It can also be applied to various metal substrates and combined with their Activators ET645, ET650 and ET655. It also works well with its Basecoat and 2K Topcoats.

This primer claims to help minimise preparation time and save materials by reducing the amount of paint needed.
