fter an absence of four years, many in the industry will welcome the return of the biennial Hillhead exhibition, further bolstered by the news that Plantworx is set to make its own comeback in June of 2023. The Lee Jones, construction plant industry is Editor currently in the midst of an unprecedented period of change, with alternative powertrains, digital technologies, and connectivity, set to transform the way that plant is procured, projects managed, and sites organised. These major exhibitions are an opportunity to display some of the latest innovations in machinery – and they have been missed. With rising fuel costs, and the price of capital equipment continuing on its upward trend, it is imperative that contractors work smarter on site, and that manufacturers supply the machinery that will allow them to do it. With the demise of the red diesel rebate, for example, the prospect of transitioning to battery powered solutions becomes all the more palatable. Whilst the initial outlay remains high, and residuals are yet to be clearly defined, the total cost of ownership of this class of machine will be travelling in the other, more favourable, direction. The value of white diesel is likely to remain at elevated levels for some time to come, but it’s not just about what goes in the tank. Electric machinery also promises significantly reduced levels of maintenance over its lifetime, and these are the calculations that will increasing need to be made. Similarly, the improvements to business operations through machine management systems should not be underestimated. Indeed, whether it’s in attachments, machines, telematics, or any other aspect of construction plant, addressing the productivity issues that have historically
bedevilled the built environment sector is now more relevant than ever. At the same time doing more with less is the essence of sustainability, because the greenest source of power is the that which we don’t use. Given the galloping pace of inflationary pressures, reductions in energy consumption and raw materials make sense not only for our environmental credentials but also on balance sheets. The catch 22 for many companies is that it is cost and a lack of skilled professionals that represent the most significant barriers to measures that would decarbonise their operations and save money in the longer term. Just as many householders in this country would be wholeheartedly in favour of making their own homes more energy efficient, but simply don’t have the funds to achieve those ambitions, the same can be said for many contractors and plant hirers. Larger firms have now embedded environmental, social and governance (ESG) measures into the culture of their organisations and, if you’re a contractor with a HS2 contract on your order books, it’s something you can certainly find the money for. Construction as a whole is anticipated to make sustainability gains in 2022 but, for many SMEs, it’s a luxury they can ill afford in the current climate. The construction industry is worth up to £110 billion to the economy as a whole and employs around 10 per cent of the total workforce, and is one of the leading growth sectors post-pandemic. If it is to continue as the driving force of UK PLC, then proper support at every level of the supply chain is required.That means financial and tax incentives for the makers of construction plant to research and develop novel solutions, and the same infrastructure in place for end users to be able to invest in their wares.

REACH FOR THE SKY Construction Plant News talks exclusively to Skyjack about some of the latest developments from the access and material handling specialist
What moves is Skyjack making into electrification and battery powered units? Not just in scissors and vertical masts but also in articulated and telescopic booms? Skyjack is currently in the process of developing its first hybrid/electric booms. The demand for such products is continuing to grow throughout the world and we recognise we need to also offer products to meet this demand – including products that currently have limited offering with hybrid/electric powertrain. While demand for straight electric is growing, the immediate demand is stronger for traditional engine/electric hybrid machines. There are a number of other alternative hybrid developments going on (i.e.. hydrogen fuel cells, hydrogen combustion engines) but currently there are fewer restrictions, such as charging infrastructure, efficiency, cost, fuel availability, on a traditional hybrid and that is why our focus is on that type of powertrain (as well as pure electric). Are there any specific trends that Skyjack is seeing in terms of platform capacity or types of attachment? Several current trends have been primarily driven by changes to emissions and design standards. Electrification is obviously a growing

trend for rough terrain equipment in Europe, while design standard changes has made manufacturers rethink how machines have been used and how they are best suited for meeting jobsite demands. We’ve also seen an increased demand for productivity options and in response we have just launched our new XStep. Designed to be used in conjunction with our compact SJ3215 and SJ3219 models, XStep increases working height by 19” by providing operators with a safe
and secure way of access into and around tight, restricted spaces, such as ceiling openings and ceiling mounted structures. Since it is an ACCESSORYZER it can be ordered from our parts department. With new machines, it can be installed and removed in minutes with no special tools needed and is also backwards compatible to the previous SJIII models. What are some of the key features and benefits of the new SL12 E, SJ16 E and SJ20E vertical masts? The new SJ12 E and SJ16 E are driven by dual AC Electric Motors which provides up to 30 per cent improvement in duty cycles, meaning less charging, less power consumption, and a lower carbon footprint. We have also achieved a 70 per cent reduction in hydraulic connections. The SJ12, SJ16, SJ20 E have working heights of 5.48m, 6.55m and 7.77m respectively. The top of the mast on the SJ12 E and SJ16 E is now in line with the platform rails, which is beneficial for overhead work, especially where there are drop ceilings. Included in the new products is a dual “load cell” overload system designed with both indoor and outdoor use in mind. The SJ12 E comes with a standard wind rating, and the SJ16E and SJ20E feature an optional wind rating for one person.

The ECO label also is accompanied by relevant information in the form of an ECO Matrix that details what constitutes the improvement in sustainability. From feedback from operators are there any specific features of Skyjack machines that end users point to as being especially useful in the field? Along with machine reliability, these are some of the key features that our customers and end users appreciate about our products. Below are some examples used across multiple products/ranges.
AXLDRIVE Low maintenance axle-based drive system gives positive traction and excellent rough ground terrain ability. This means Skyjack Rough Terrain Scissor Lifts and Boom Lifts can be used in the most challenging of conditions. Other notable features include: ■ 90-degree steering with a zero inside turning radius. ■ A simple, maintenance free, and fixed pothole protection system. ■ Forklift pockets located at the rear of the base with tie down and lift points at each corner. ■ Onboard CAN enabled control unit and multi-voltage “smart” charger; and ■ Onboard diagnostics display with simple and plain language readouts. Can you explain the ECO mark? What standards and machine specifications are required for a machine to be accredited it, and what it is intended to convey to customers? The ECO mark was introduced to highlight the features on Skyjack machines that make them sustainable products, from the perspective of both their operation and construction.Various machines now feature updated machine livery and information on literature has been added to identify both existing features as well as improvements that make them sustainable products. We are focusing on not only making improvements to our products but also highlighting some of the features that already exist on the machines that help our customers improve their impact on the environment. We launched the ECO label on the recently introduced SJ12/16 E models to highlight how we’ve been able to bridge practicality with

SKYRISER Ensures that the riser – and main pivot point connecting the fly boom to the riser – travel in a straight vertical line. Movement in a true vertical manner, without drifting forward or back, this reduces the amount of repositioning the operator needs to do in order to stay close to a building facade, improving productivity.
SMARTORQUE Using an optimised balance of engine horsepower, torque, and hydraulic performance, Skyjack SMARTORQUE products deliver the same on-site job performance as higher power units – providing excellent performance with less engine horsepower. Less emission controlling components avoids the cost associated with their complexity, as well as the time and inconvenience required in maintaining them. SMARTORQUE means no Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), no Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)/AdBlue, and no other active exhaust after treatment.

JCB SUPERFAN PURCHASES 56Z-2 A landfill and quarrying company has bought the first Stage V JCB 56Z-2 model in Northern Ireland. Supplied by dealer Dennison JCB, the midi excavator has been purchased by Belfast-based Macwill Services. Owner, Chris McLaughlin, a selfconfessed JCB superfan hosts his own YouTube channel – The JCB Club – and chose the machine for civil engineering duties and essential environmental projects within its Belfast landfill site and family farm estate.
The mini excavator fleet of Essex-based Rose Builders is turning orange, with a total of 17 Kubota models now supplied by local dealer HOS Plant. That includes the eight-tonne KX080 models, with a further five KX030 three-tonners and four short radius U17s. In addition, the contractor operates a five tonne U48-4 and a K008 micro excavator. AN AGGREGATE WIN A new Doosan excavator & wheel loader are the perfect combination for Elliotts (Cheltenham) quarrying and recycled aggregate operations
E
lliotts (Cheltenham) based in Bishops Cleeve, near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, has been providing services to the area for well over 100 years. From early beginnings that started with deliveries by horse and cart, the company has now added the very latest in quality equipment with the purchase of a new Doosan DX380LC-7 40 tonne crawler excavator and DL320-7 wheel loader for use in the company’s quarrying and recycled aggregate businesses, respectively. The new machines were supplied by Kellands (Plant Sales), based in Bridgwater in Somerset, the Authorised Doosan Dealer for West and South England.
The Best Package on the Market Nick Elliott, Managing Director of Elliotts (Cheltenham), said: “We have been buying Doosan machines for a number of years and the new DX380LC-7 crawler excavator and DL320-7 wheel loader are the latest. We choose the brand because it is a guarantee of excellent, dependable equipment backed by the expertise and fantastic service and support provided by Charlie Cook and the rest of the team at Kellands. We believe it is the best package available in our market.” The new Doosan DX380LC-7 excavator is working at Perton Quarry in Tarrington in Herefordshire, which is owned by the Elliotts group. The DX380LC-7 works at the face loading blasted material into a mobile crusher to produce 6F2 aggregates. The DX380LC-7 is also combined with a breaker to reduce larger pieces of rock that come off the quarry face during blasting.

The mobile crusher moves between Perton Quarry and Elliotts‘ main aggregates recycling operation based outside Cheltenham. Here it joins the new Doosan DL320-7 wheel loader to be part of the fleet of equipment used at the site, where construction waste such as raw concrete and rubble is sorted and processed to produce 6F5 aggregates. The DL320-7 is used to load lorries with aggregates for delivery to Elliotts customers. New Doosan Stage V Machines Bring Major Enhancements The new Stage V excavator and wheel loader introduce major enhancements in operator comfort, machine controllability, productivity, uptime and return on investment, with a strong focus on low fuel consumption, increased power, robustness and versatility. Part of the latest generation DX-7 range, the DX380LC-7 Is powered by the Scania DC09 Stage V compliant diesel engine, providing 240 kW of power at 1,800rpm. The DX380LC-7 features the Korean manufacturer’s D-ECOPOWER technology, providing operators with higher productivity and lower fuel consumption per hour, as well as smoother controls. The DX380LC-7 offers a digging depth of 8,165mm, a digging reach of 11,930mm and digging height of 10,940mm. The digging force over the bucket is 25.9 tonne and the
digging force over the arm is 16.0 tonne. With a standard bucket capacity of 3.3 m3, the new DL320-7 wheel loader is part of its award-winning ‘DL-7’ range. Power is provided by the new Doosan DL08V Stage V 6-cylinder engine, with an output of 202 kW (271 HP) at 1,800rpm. Increased bucket capacity provides improved productivity for a very wide range of material-handling applications. The LIS (Load Isolation System) on the DL320-7 provides a smoother ride and higher comfort for the operator, as well as higher output due to improved stability when the wheel loader is moving. The lift arm is cushioned by a hydro-pneumatic accumulator linked to the lift hydraulic system, acting as a shock absorber. The benefits include reduced cycle times, higher performance and better fuel efficiency while carrying out load and carry applications. The new EMCV (Electric Main Control Valve) joystick in the DL320-7 is fully integrated in the armrest in the cab, providing the operator with smoother and precise controllability of the lift arm and attachments on the wheel loader. Features available via the EMCV system include Automatic Return-to-Dig, Bucket Tilt Kick-out and the Bucket crowd stop position and shock prevention for higher operator comfort.
Increased Comfort and Controllability The enhanced cabs in the DX380LC-7 and DL320-7 models have new high-quality seats and offer more features as standard than other machines on the market. Using the new Doosan Smart Key system on the control panel in the cabs, an operator can start the machines using a keyless device, helping to prevent machine theft. The Smart Key system provides remote door control, door lock and unlock, door release, searching and other functions. The new DX380LC-7 and DL320-7 are both factory-installed as standard with the DoosanCONNECT wireless fleet monitoring system.

THE next big thing Many of the features that Cat users are already enjoying in its larger units are making their way down to the more compact Next Generation class of machinery.
I
ndeed, with the Next Generation Cat 906, 907 and 908 the manufacturer claims that it has undertaken some of the biggest changes in a solution of this kind for the last 15 years, with upgrades to the operator environment, engine and powertrain, as well as an enhanced hydraulics system. In a first for a machine in this size, for example, the Next Generation models feature in-cab-programmable kickouts with highdefinition rotary sensors mounted to the loader arms. As a result, operators are better protected from unwanted shock and vibration due to buckets striking the ground and/or hitting dump stops at max height. Proper kickout operation also saves up to 20 per cent of bucket cutting edge life. Rather than leaving the cab for setting, the operator remains inside the cab while setting upper, lower and attachment kickout positions at the touch of a button. Moreover, cylinder snubbing, eliminates the bouncing and jarring experienced when at maximum height and full dump by introducing a cushioning effect. In the driver’s workstation many of the practical features from the previous generation
have been retained, such as two doors and low visibility windows. The pedals are also raised for easier cleaning – a welcome detail in the rental sector – whilst there’s a storage box on the cab’s entrance side. The interior space can
also be tailored to the required spec. If a basic set-up is all that’s required, for example, then the control panel can be simplified. If you’re a rental customer, for instance, this is a theme which is continued throughout the design of the new 908, where a more no-frills solution can be specified and built at the Cat factory in Leicestershire. Conversely, a higher specification is an equally straightforward proposition thanks to some of the extras that can be easily installed by the customer. Need light guards, additional lighting or tool boxes? Well, then there’s a choice of over 50 kits that you can easily update your machine with. Furthermore, this latest Cat wheel loader proposition has been made design-ready for more complex and specialised attachments, which can be easily added by the dealer. At the same time there are a number of new features actionable through the monitor, including auto engine idle shutdown. Servicing and maintenance information can be accessed, including fluid and filter management, and fuel consumption, whilst the machine set up can be adjusted depending on the job and attachment.

Servicing is at 500-hour intervals, which again will be communicated through the in-cab screen. All round visibility is boosted with a 60 per cent wider, one-piece curved screen and mirrors are larger as standard, with the option of heated and electric versions. There’s a choice of light configurations with two or four halogen or LED units at the front and rear. If you choose four at the front and four at the rear, the two outside lights can be turned 90 degrees to create a 360-degree illuminated area. The workstation equally benefits from a medium wheel loader seat in a compact machine, seat mounted controls, and 71db in cab sound. Maintenance is facilitated with a replaceable grille in the event of rear-end damage, whilst
ease of servicing has clearly been given serious thought, including the introduction of LED lights to help with checks on fluids and filters early in the morning or late at night. A reversing fan that automatically blows material away from the cooling pad will be your friend in high debris environments, and there’s a toolbox for chain and grease storage. The Cat-designed, manufactured and assembled C2.8 engine, offers more torque and more power but with a very similar fuel consumption to the previous generation. The powertrain will also achieve 40kph or 25mph, and shift on the fly is a useful addition in every application, all of which means more work can be done with less energy. The front of the machine is where the work
gets done and here the loader arms have been reprogrammed, which means reach has been extended, whilst the optional skid steer coupler has been been tweaked to increase visibility. A pressure compensative valve is now standard on Cat machines improving lift, tilt and hydro-mechanical functionality. It’s a feature which is also great for the productivity of rotating attachments like brooms and cold planers. Not only that, by the 908 Hi Lift allows reach over the side walls of a feeder wagon and will be welcome in industrial waste applications. The updated General Purpose Bucket has increased capacity, with a curved edge that helps keep material inside in all conditions, and better line of sight for the operator. Additionally, changes to the fork carriage and smaller cross section rails opens up a viewing window from the cab into the fork tine. The rails have been repositioned to be lower, thereby moving the loader arm higher, which will help reach further across a truck to a second pallet. The 908 machines will replace the existing 906, 907 and 908 M-Series, which were the previous Stage V solutions and will be available from the third/fourth quarter of 2022. The 906 fuel tank is 30 per cent larger than the previous M-Series, which means the unit can work for much longer, uninterrupted hours, and its 2.5m low cab height makes it a very compact package.

We understand that a key design feature of the D series loaders is the positioning of the engine behind the rear axle. What does that achieve for the end user? The design allows not only unhindered access to engine service points but also a cooling cube between the engine and transmission. E L B I X E YOUR FL FRIEND Construction Plant News explores some of the latest innovations from Tiltrotator specialist, Engcon
N
o piece of equipment is doing more to turn excavators into multi-tasking tool carriers than the tiltrotator, and engcon is at the forefront of some of the latest innovations. Since the beginning of the ‘90s, the Swedish manufacturer has been supplying these flexible friends for excavators in the 1.5 – 33 tonne weight range. Already a staple on machines on the continent – and especially in the Nordics – the ability to dig in several different directions, and make simple tool changes, means the product is rapidly gaining traction in the UK. Indeed, tiltrotator advocates claim that a tilting and rotating bucket on a digger can simplify work and increase efficiency by up to 25 per cent. In recent years, the EC-Oil quick hitch system has been introduced to the tiltrotator concept, connecting hydraulic tools automatically, without the driver having to step out of the cab to make a manual connection of the hydraulic couplings. That direction of travel continues with the launch of an automatic EC-Oil quick hitch for the EC206 tiltrotator for excavators in sizes 46 tonnes. 2020 saw the introduction of EC-Oil automatic oil and electrical coupling as standard on the machine hitch S40, and on the upper part of an EC206 tiltrotator for machines up to 6 tonnes. Now engcon is introducing an EC-Oil automatic quick hitch system also on the lower quick hitch. It is both convenient and saves valuable work time for operators by not having to step out of

the cab to connect with manual, pressurised and dirty hydraulic couplings. The lower quick hitch of the S40 also gets several extra hydraulic outlets as well as a smart function with the possibility to connect a detachable gripping cassette. It is now also planned for sweeper rollers and other tools. A detachable gripper cassette means that the driver can easily and quickly disconnect the gripper when it is not needed. It is a weight saving of about 35kg and, if you count how
many times you lift the bucket in a day, that quickly translates into a fuel saving and reduced wear and tear.
Extra equipiment engcon has also chosen to equip the EC206 with a completely new swivel with increased capacity and more outputs for extra hydraulics on the quick hitch S40 under the EC206. In addition, there is an extra socket on each side of the quick hitch and an extra socket on

the back of the bracket. Extra sockets on the side of the quick hitch bracket are also possible, feeding directly from the excavator’s extra hydraulic socket. This then enables a higher oil flow than the outlets that are controlled via the tiltrotator’s valves and enables operation of, for example, slope mowers or other tools that require slightly higher oil flows. It also has the advantages of not having any hoses in the lower quick hitch and will be the same concept as the larger models, where the EC-Oil blocks and extra sockets are screwed into the bracket. On the S40, the locking cylinder is also screwed directly into the block, and this means that the bracket has no hoses or moving parts that rub and cause wear. Additional features on the new EC206 mean that it is now possible to equip it with both tilt and rotation sensors for the machines that have machine control systems.
Third generation tiltrotator 2022 has also witnessed the arrival of the third generation of engcon tiltrotators.The new system will apply smart technologies, address sustainability issues, and will be in tune with the onward and relentless march of electric excavators. The third generation is based on a newly developed type of valve in combination with smart software that collaborates with the excavator’s load-sensing hydraulic system. PC6000 Compactor Plate Combining a compactor plate with an excavator is becoming more common for soil compaction, reducing the number of machines or tools required for the task. Personal safety has also been increased by removing the need to have a
person with a hand operator compactor in a shaft with the risk of walls collapsing because of vibrations or a chain or strap breaking whilst lifting equipment. Furthermore, the working area becomes larger as it is possible to rotate and angle the compactor plate so that it follows the lines of the ground. Adapted for use under a tiltrotator, the engcon PC6000 compactor plate is designed for excavators in the 12-24 tonne class, allowing the operator to tilt and rotate the plate. “Among other things, it’s possible to compress around slopes and wells, without constantly having to change the position of the machine,” explains the product’s designer and project manager, Johan Johansson. Like other hydraulic tools from the manufacturer, the EC-Oil automatic quick hitch system is standard on the new compactor plate PC6000.

The switch to white diesel means companies need to think smarter about the way they work on site, according to Worsley Plant
WORKING SMARTER
I
t’s a hot topic that is hard to ignore in the construction and demolition industry. As part of the Government’s long-term plans to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and to encourage the industry towards using alternative power sources, companies operating construction machinery and equipment, are now no longer allowed to use rebated red diesel or rebated biofuels. Instead, they will need to switch to white diesel. With white diesel up to 190 per cent more expensive for the industry than red diesel was before the onset of the pandemic, many businesses could be in jeopardy, and unable to survive the rising costs, especially smaller companies. To survive, close scrutiny of fuel savings on projects is required. As well as considering other alternative fuels – such as HVO (hydro-treated vegetable oil) – it will be more important than ever to work smarter on site.
Many hydraulic attachments can save time, money and ultimately the environment. “Only one machine and one operator is carrying out the job, resulting in big money-savings. There is no need to move the material, our transport costs have been eliminated,” says one owner of an MB Crushing Bucket. Processing materials with one engine and the bucket means no loading shovel, no tipper truck, and no static crusher. The materials can be recycled there and then and immediately re-used. The advantages of crushing buckets over static crushers or buying in materials are clear, and are especially beneficial for the smaller contractors on whom the rise in fuel costs will have a bigger impact. Looking at more fuelefficient attachments will also become important. Often the cheaper version is not the best option and it’s crucial that your machines operate at an optimal level whilst also cutting fuel consumption.
Shear Joy Louis Broekhuizen, Commercial Director at Rotar recently stated that their Shears may not be the cheapest models on the market, but they will last a long time and new technology used means the equipment’s diesel consumption has been significantly decreased. A recent report revealed that operating a Hitachi/Rotar combination with a daily running time of 10 hours will achieve around a £2,300 saving in

monthly diesel costs. Another consideration, particularly in the demolition sector, is the introduction of a fully automatic quick coupler to allow the operator to use one machine and change over to the right tool for the right job. This means the tool is being used more efficiently and only one machine is needed rather than two or three.

It’s clear that with the recent changes companies need to re-think the way they work to avoid rising costs. Sean Heron, MD of Worsley Plant added: “Thinking smarter is key. A Surrey waste & recycling centre has found its very own screen star Established for over 30 years, D&E Roberts operates from its waste transfer & recycling centre in Leatherhead. The company provides waste disposal services to a diverse customer base, including householders, builders, and landscaping contractors. Continual investment in ‘state of the art’ waste sorting and separating equipment to process all the waste enables an ongoing commitment to responsible recycling. “Using the best equipment for the job is key,” declares company owner, Dave Roberts. “The Remu bucket certainly helps in this respect – it’s a versatile piece of kit.” The bucket can be used for various applications, each helping to achieve a higher percentage of recycled materials. With the construction and demolition waste it is used to screen soil from hardcore, so that it can go on to be crushed and re-used. In this respect it is used in conjunction with an MB Crushing Bucket. When garden and landscaping waste comes onto site it is used to screen soil from bushes, shrubbery and grass leaving green waste to be more easily recycled. Even with general rubbish they screen out the soil and sand, to make it easier to sort wood, paper and plastics. Fines under 24mm are taken out which leaves less weight of remaining waste. The screened-out fines also have their uses. Dave concludes: “We’ve been working with the Remu Screening Bucket for a little over three years now. It’s a welcome addition to our range of equipment.”

GROUND CONTROL Brigade Electronics is keeping ground workers safe in the construction industry. Emily Hardy, a commercial vehicle safety specialist at the company, explains more.
A
ccording to recent figures from the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), retail sales of construction and earthmoving equipment are still increasing, with road rollers, excavators, loaders and telehandlers all remaining on an upward curve. Last year, the UK government announced a new super-deduction tax. Running from 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2023, it equates to a £25 million tax break for businesses investing in qualifying plant and machinery assets. There’s no doubt that this has had a positive impact on retail sales of construction equipment. However, with this growth comes the greater potential for vehicle and worker related collisions. Ground workers on construction sites are at particular risk from moving vehicles and equipment. Of the total fatal injuries to workers in 2020/2021, 11 per
cent were struck by a moving object and 10 per cent by a moving vehicle, while 4 per cent were killed due to moving machinery hitting them. Blind spots on large worksite vehicles and machinery can be particularly deadly. The front, rear and nearside are problematic areas of vehicles, particularly those with elevated driver positions. Harsh construction site terrains, where thick dust and mud often decrease visibility even more, further increases the risk of accidents. On construction sites, the need for safety is paramount, particularly as the slightest mistake can have devastating consequences. Emily Hardy, a commercial vehicle safety specialist at Brigade Electronics UK, said: “Approximately 70 per cent of incidents on sites happen during initial machine start-up and low speed movement because of poor visibility. Construction sites can be extremely challenging and unpredictable environments. Therefore, maintaining safety at all times can be extremely difficult.”
Tech Solutions Smart technology is helping to address the problem of restricted visibility and blind spots in handling areas. These include the very latest RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, such as Brigade’s ZoneSafe proximity warning system. Emily continued: “We have been working with our trusted partners in Scotland, Banlaw Systems, Tayside Contracts, Andover Trailers and JCB Stewart Plant Sales, to provide solutions that will help to improve efficiency, enhance environmental and safety performance as well as offer rapid on-site attendance for fitting and repairs in the event of a system failure.

“Together, we have been focusing on bringing ever-advancing technology to the market designed specifically with construction vehicles and machinery in mind that will help make road and worksites safer. These include a range of products such as Brigade’s 360 HD MDR with BRIDGE – a high-definition recordable vehicle CCTV system with cloud connectivity – the DVS Safe System Kit, bbs-tek White Sound reversing alarms and, of course, ZoneSafe.” Ideal for construction sites, ZoneSafe uses vehicle-mounted antennas that communicate with detection tags, which can be worn by workers, set up in restricted areas or placed on objects or property. When a tag enters a detection zone, the vehicle operator will automatically receive a visual and audible alert via the in-cab control unit, which will enable them to take the necessary action. Tags worn by workers on foot will also vibrate to warn of an approaching vehicle. Due to the RFID technology, which does not require line-of-sight, tags will be detected regardless of obstructions, blind
spots, adverse weather conditions or poor visibility. Each tag can be uniquely identified and linked to individual people.
Construction Vehicles Emily continued: “This technology is ideal for all types of construction vehicles that frequently operate within close proximity of workers and other machines. The system provides fast, reliable and accurate data exchange without any limitation on the number of tags or antennas in operation, making it perfect for large areas like busy construction sites.” As the number of construction sites
increase, more will need to be done to address the issue of enhancing safety in areas where machinery and ground workers operate. Emily added: “Driver training is obviously key to ensuring safety standards are adhered to. However, vehicle safety technology can add an additional layer of security and peace of mind for operators who are keen to ensure that their workplaces remain hazard free.”
