VIEWPOINT

ON THE RIGHT COURSE

T

here is no doubt that the construction plant sector is experiencing its most significant period of change. Whether it’s in emissions or machine control, the technology we now routinely utilise is amongst the most advanced – but it is the industry’s people who remain its Lee Jones, Editor greatest resource. The built environment workforce is uniquely fragmented, with a project’s successful completion often relying on a relatively small pool of highly specialised trades. As any contractor can testify finding the machine is often the simplest part of the equation to solve – even when taking into account current supply issues – but finding a capable operator is often a more complex proposition. Skills shortages are not a crisis projected for the future but part of the here and now, which makes CITB’s decision to continue delivering training at Bircham Newton and in Scotland all the more welcome. Since the announcement of its Vision 2020 strategy CITB has been divesting itself of direct responsibility for the National Construction Colleges, as well as qualifications, and competency cards. When it came to the Norfolk facility – as well as the NCC site in Inchinnan, Glasgow – finding a buyer that was prepared to guarantee the broad spectrum of courses these institutions offer was always going to be problematic. Many of these disciplines will never attract a particularly high uptake – or level of profitability for the provider –

but that doesn’t make the individuals they are training any the less important to the infrastructure, civil engineering or housing schemes on which they will be employed. Indeed, given the very particular set of skills that they command, their scarcity makes them all the more vital. Employers need certainty not just in construction plant supply but also in its staff, and that means drivers for all possible classes of machine on every conceivable job. That doesn’t mean, of course, that we should stop with what we’ve got. In instructing new entrants, and upskilling the existing workforce, Bircham Newton has been an invaluable resource for the industry for many years, and these are the kind of institutions we should be developing still further. The building industry is currently experiencing a unique upsurge in its public profile, where our legislators are at last acknowledging its importance, not just in wealth creation, but in delivering the homes, roads, railways, hospitals and schools around which our society is structured. In a post-pandemic Britain we are uniquely placed to promote the diverse building careers available as a viable career destination for the best and brightest. Construction relies on a huge range of roles, where the aptitudes and abilities of almost any individual can shine. Where it has failed in the past is in successfully communicating that reality. Today, we have a unique opportunity to do just that.

BRYAN SHANNON It is with much sadness that we have to announce the recent passing of our Publisher, Bryan Shannon. In a career spanning more than 50 years it is no exaggeration to say that Bryan helped to change the established order of trade magazine publishing in the UK. His visionary ideas on distribution, commitment to editorial excellence and market-leading circulations quickly established a portfolio of highly regarded titles in the construction, automotive and hairdressing sectors, as well as the highly popular Toolfair and Elex trade shows. As well as considerable magazine success, Bryan’s other great legacy is the wonderful opportunities afforded to legions of budding journalists and advertising sales representatives to cut their teeth at Hamerville Media Group, many of whom have subsequently go on to run their own successful businesses within the sector. The iconic cockerel figurehead which he chose to reflect the importance of being first up with the news will continue to have much to crow about in the years to come.

RECOVERY POSITION THE BUILDING INDUSTRY IS CONTINUING TO LAY THE FOUNDATIONS FOR SOLID AND SUSTAINABLE GROWTH Retail sales of construction and earthmoving equipment in March 2021 were close to double the levels seen in the corresponding month last year. As a result, sales in the first quarter were 30 per cent above 2020 levels and reached over 8,000 units. Sales this year were also 2.9 per cent above 2019 levels with mini and midi excavators (up to 10 tonnes) and other crawler excavators seeing the strongest growth. Amongst the other equipment types, road rollers and

telehandlers also experienced strong recoveries. Across the industry as a whole construction output grew by 5.8 per cent in March and was 2.4 per cent (£334 million) above the February 2020 prepandemic level. Elsewhere, the latest edition of the Economic & Construction Market Review from Barbour ABI, reveals that residential contract awards increased again in April to £2.5 billion, up from £2.0 billion in March. There was a strong performance for infrastructure,

FAMOUS V The stage is set for a stellar cast of JCB launches. Construction Plant News Editor, Lee Jones looks at the manufacturer’s latest clean diesel solutions.

I

n the spring and early summer of 2020 the global market for construction equipment collapsed by 50 per cent of its value, and assembly lines around the world were halted. Fast forward twelve months and the construction and infrastructure sectors have been specifically leveraged by legislators across the globe to stimulate economies. The UK is no exception, and, with a commitment from government to improve our roads, railways and housing, that rebound will hold firm.

Zero to Hero That means machines will be required in ever increasing numbers, but they will need to be delivered sustainably. With its Road to Zero initiative, that’s a journey that JCB is already well advanced, with the manufacturer already having reduced the carbon footprint of its machines by 50 per cent in just the last ten years. “Our challenge has been to meet the more stringent Stage V standard and to do so

8 MAY / JUNE I CPN

without impacting on machine performance”, declares Ryan Ballard, Engineering Director at JCB, “whilst also creating the least inconvenience to our customers. The focus has been on finding answers to particulates without simply bolting on a DPF, and we’ve done that with a marriage of low emission combustion systems, filters, and catalysts, managed by engine and aftertreatment control technology, all of which ensures that exhaust emissions are minimised over the widest range of operating conditions.” Most importantly for customers these developments are invisible, requiring no intervention in terms of additional maintenance, and all fitting within existing canopies. When it comes to all of these solutions the direction of travel is clearly set towards more power and torque with greater fuel efficiency, but in an increasingly compact overall package. It is a balance that a more sustainable future demands and one that JCB Stage V solutions are delivering.

X-Series The Stage V, 4.8-litre JCB DieselMax 448, which is now powering the manufacturers 140X, 150X and 220X crawler excavators, exemplifies that guiding principle. On the 14 and 15-tonne machines the 448 replaces the 4.4litre EcoMax engine but delivers the same 81kW (108hp) power output, but with 516Nm of torque – a massive rise of 135Nm. On the 22 tonne X-Series the new Stage V unit is replacing the EcoMax 448 Stage IV engine and offers the same 129kW or 172hp with 690Nm of torque. The transition to Stage V has allowed the manufacturer to update additional features on these crawler excavators, including enhanced cab specification, climate control air conditioning, and 15 per cent more space for the driver. In addition, a new Selective Catalytic Reduction Filter (SCR-F) that comprises a combined SCR, Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) provides a completely integrated solution. There is no longer a requirement for Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and the system has been removed from the new inlet manifold, resulting in a cleaner burning engine. Similarly, the 3.0-litre JCB DieselMax 430 continues that theme of smaller capacity combined with greater efficiency. It has replaced the existing 4.4litre unit and achieves a 55kW or 74hp output with 440Nm of torque – a 10 per cent increase on the outgoing model – complemented by a 7 per cent fuel saving compared to the previous Stage IV solution.

008_CPN_MAYJUNE21_Layout 1 26/05/2021 17:17 Page 9

Teletruk Stage V upgrades are not just about advances in diesel but, just as with the Loadall, can bring bring other benefits besides. With a lift capacity of 2 ½ tonne, and 2m of forward reach, the forklift functionality and telescopic ability of the JCB Teletruk already made it a versatile concept. Thanks to the addition of a 46kW, 62hp JCB by Kohler unit with auto stop and combined DPF and DOC there’s now greater lifting potential at full reach, new machine styling, and a CommandPlus cab, together with easy-to-use fully proportional single lever electro-hydraulic controls. In fact, at 2m reach, the Teletruk now has the muscle to maneouvre up to 200kg in additional weight.

Loadall JCB loadalls equipped with the 430 engine have been available since the end of 2019, but operators now have a choice of engine, with machines ranging from the 7m, 531-70 up to the 20m 540-200 all available with the 4.8-litre 448 DieselMax. The latter engine supplies 81kW or 109 hp with auto-start a common feature across all these units. Here, the system stops the engine after three minutes of continuous idling, saving fuel, reducing emissions, and soot build up in the DPF, the presence of which can equally be accurately monitored by the JCB LiveLink system. The Staffordshire-based manufacturer describes its suite of particulate control technologies on the 448 as a “compact onecan solution”. Again, this includes a

Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) with a combined and integrated Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), which eliminates the need for Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). That the new Stage V JCB engines fit within the existing geometry of its machines will be particularly welcome on a telehandler, where visibility over the boom and engine canopy are paramount. Indeed, the addition of an integrated vent grille has meant that the exhaust pipe is no longer visible, and righthand line of sight over the engine pod has actually been improved slightly.

Generator

Backhoe Loader The iconic backhoe loader also takes to Stage V with the 3CX, 4CX and 5CX PRO adopting the latest technology. Again, there’s not just more power and less cost but a raft of new features including the CommandPlus Cab. The 81kW (109hp) engine replaces the previous 68kW (91hp) unit, and also benefits from Auto Stop.

When it comes to all of these solutions the direction of travel is clearly set towards more power and torque with greater fuel efficiency, but in an increasingly compact overall package. It is a balance that a more sustainable future demands and one that JCB Stage V solutions are delivering.

Another JCB solution that benefits from a Stage V JCB by Kohler powertrain is the G40RS V generator set, part of the manufacturer’s Rental Series (RS) range. Equipment destined for the hire sector need to be robust, and the RS powder coated, corrosion resistant and 2mm thick steel canopy is just that, whilst an overgauge base frame is complemented by the mobility of integral fork pockets. The G40RS V supersedes the Stage IIIA G36RS model delivering 40kVA at 50Hz frequency, through a 42.4kW (57hp) fourcylinder turbocharged engine that makes use of both DPF and DOC without SCR.

Take it as

‘RED’

The latest Manitou initiative has heralded the launch of three entirely new product lines, as well as developments in its MRT rotating telehandler portfolio.

B

uildings are increasingly constructed closer together and urban jobsites are shrinking, whilst structures with a reduced footprint often demand additional height to compensate. That means ever more compact machine solutions must inevitably follow. The Manitou answer is three new machines – the 7metre, MT 730 H, the 9metre MT 930 H, and the MT 930 HA (with platform basket) – all with dimensions of just 2m wide by 2m high, but still capable of reaching the 3rd floor of a build. Add to that a choice of attachments, which includes dedicated high capacity, narrow buckets, and you have a tool that is capable of operating in the tightest of spaces.

Not only that, thanks to a new system that folds back the forks during transit – and reduces the overall machine length by 4.67m – the new MTs are easier to transport. When it comes to performance good things really do come in small packages, because these rough terrain solutions benefit from what is described as a best in class ground clearance, and a nimble turning radius of 3.30m, whilst still bearing the brawn to carry up to 3tonnes at 9m. These are units that will excel in masonry applications, roofing, inside renovation, housing and many more applications. The smoothness, control, precision and simplicity of hydrostatic is the future and Manitou is championing that transmission system on these machines. In addition, thanks to a common Harmony dashboard operators will find it easy to move from one model to another. Simplicity equals safety and that’s why all controls are colour coded with clear symbols denoting function and, by detecting the operator's hand, a sensor in the joystick avoids any inadvertent movement. Moreover, if the machine is driven with the boom up, or the operator is not wearing

his seat belt, that behaviour is flagged by a red beacon, with a message also sent to the fleet manager’s smartphone, whilst there’s also stepless access, and an automatic parking brake. A key consideration in the development of these machines has been total cost of ownership. That’s why many components have been harmonised with the existing MT625, minimising spare part stocks and technician training, and maintenance time has been reduced wherever possible. From its own customer feedback Manitou has identified that up to 70 per cent of mechanical issues in hydraulic circuits are as a result of oil pollution. That’s why the this materials handling expert has developed an easy and clean solution to change and analyse hydraulic oil through two caps on the boom. The French manufacturer’s research into real world machine usage also revealed that a machine can be sitting idle up to 45 per cent of the time. With Stop & Start, however, the engine will automatically shut down after a period determined by the end user, reducing fuel consumption, emissions, wear on components and noise levels. It is then very simply reactivated by touching the joystick or accelerator.

The MT is, of course, already an established product line but the ULM (UltraLight Manitou) represents a new departure. A 1.9m high and l.49m wide machine that weighs – including attachment – just 2,700kg can be towed on a trailer behind a van or pick-up truck, but without any compromise on power, lifting height or load. Indeed, the ULM exhibits the same 4-wheel drive and oscillating axle technology from its larger siblings, as well JSM joystick, and is compatible with all of the Manitou Group’s attachments. It’s a size that opens up a whole new world of renovation and refurbishment jobs to a telehandler, with small contractors benefitting from a class of machine that they might previously have discounted and will be available to order by the end of the year. The ULM is not the only new product line, however, because the MLA (Manitou Loader Articulated) range is a comprehensive new suite of smaller machines. Available with both long and short arms – and incorporating the MLA 2, MLA 3, MLA 4, and MLA 5 – all will be available with hydrostatic transmission, choice of cab or canopy, and may well demonstrate the kind of functionality that could tempt UK operators to invest in a class of equipment which has been hitherto under-represented on these shores. One of the challenges in construction plant design has been accommodating Stage V emissions technologies underneath existing canopies, especially when machines which are themselves getting smaller, and Manitou has taken great care to ensure that these are solutions that that tread with a lighter footprint both in carbon emissions and vital statistics.

12 MAY / JUNE I CPN

Rotating Telehandler One machine that is gradually making the move from Euro star to UK favourite is the rotating telehandler and, with its MRT solutions, Manitou is already a leader in the field. The latest editions, the product of more than two years’ work by the manufacturer’s engineers – and including more than twenty individual patents – will no doubt attract even more converts amongst contractors this side of the Channel. The MRT Vison and Vision+ units demonstrate Manitou’s focus on visibility, cab access and performance. Under those banners there’s two entirely new models – the MRT 1645 and MRT 1845 – with lifting height of 16 metres and 18 metres respectively for a load of 4.5 tonnes (9,900 lbs). The 14 machines in the Vision range offer a wide selection with heights ranging from 16 to 25 metres and 4.5 tonne lifting potential.

The highest capacities are grouped together as Vision+, which features 12 models, and six new products: MRT 2260, MRT 2660, MRT 3570 (also available in an electronic suspension version), MRT 2570 and MRT 3060. Here, lifting heights extend as far as 35 metres and 7 tonnes.

Construction Plant News Editor, Lee Jones investigates the latest in Pedestrian Detection Camera technology from FTC Group

‘SITE’ SEEING

I

t is increasingly the case that clients are demanding that the construction plant used on their projects is equipped with a camera system. Sites themselves are getting tighter for space and large pieces of machinery are often operating alongside ground-working personnel with little room for manoeuvre – and where one error of judgement could prove disastrous. Once the recognition has been made that technology can be our saviour, it’s then a question of what system to choose, and FTC Group thinks it has the answer. The company is already a very wellestablished player in the fork-lift sector and, since the introduction of its Pedestrian Detection Camera into the construction market, has been steadily gaining a following amongst plant hirers and contractors, but what makes its system different to what is already out there? “There are a number of solutions available where the boots on the ground are required to carry or utilise tags,” explains Sean Hamill, Business Development Manager at the company. “These systems can, however, be problematic to operate effectively on builds where personnel from a number of different companies are in attendance, which in reality is the case on most sites these days. By contrast, the FTC Pedestrian Detection Camera is much easier to manage from the point of view of the contractor.” So just how does it work? “Each of the cameras provides 140-degree field of vision,” continues Sean, “with an array of three units offering a 360 view, depending on the machine. We’re very much led by the client on how the system will ultimately operate in situ and there’s a range of different audible and visual warnings

14 MAY / JUNE I CPN

014_CPN_MAYJUNE21_Layout 1 27/05/2021 12:19 Page 15

of encroachment that can be specified, whilst either 7 or 9in. full HD in-cab touchscreens are available.” The camera software utilises a pre-defined algorithm to differentiate between the movement of people and objects.Variable fields of vision from 1 – 30 metres are organised around familiar red, amber and green parameters, which again can be configured in consultation with the customer, in addition to this, a wide range of additions can be added to the system such as customised sounders, flashing beacons, continual recording drives and links to advanced telemetry systems. Sean reveals more: “Whether it’s a shovel loader working in a waste & recycling centre, a telehandler on a house building site, or an excavator in a demolition or construction environment, FTC has a dedicated team of installers who can work with fleet managers. It’s completely non-intrusive, so will have no effect on warranties and, once fitted, the additional training required is minimal.” One of the recognised dangers of any safety device is warning fatigue, or the crywolf syndrome. If an alarm is activated too

often then it can be become instinctively ignored by those it is supposed to be protecting. FTC Group believes that, by introducing a level and type of alert around the operator and their workspace, its more bespoke approach mitigates that problem. Moreover, there is the potential for the Pedestrian Detection System to integrate with the same company’s Optafleet management software. The increased level of functionality it affords will allow responsible individuals to identify specific risk areas on

site, or where driver behaviour needs to be addressed. Data on pedestrian interaction can then be interrogated by desktop or an app, with heatmaps by site, operator or class of equipment also available to view. Even if the client doesn’t opt for the full fleet management solution – if, for instance, their machinery is already supplied with an OEMdeveloped solution – FTC can offer a GPS enabled installation and continuous recording cameras as an additional resource which, again, will allow greater insights into machine safety on any given site or piece of equipment. HS2 has already determined that a pedestrian detection system that is managed by contractors themselves will need to be in evidence on machinery in order to gain access to its sites, and that is now the direction of travel across the industry as a whole. What FTC Group is supplying is a solution that is tailored to particular operational requirements and can be easily overseen on site.

THE

WHEEL Doosan is continuing its introducton of its DL-7 Wheel Loaders with the DL220-7 and DL250-7

THING

T

he first phase of the ‘DL-7’ wheel loader range came in December 2020 and involved the launch of seven larger machines. Doosan Infracore Europe has now added the DL220-7 and DL250-7 units promising all the same features as for its bigger siblings, including Stage V compliant engines, enhanced productivity, increased fuel efficiency and a low cost of ownership, not to mention an improved experience for the operator. The DL220-7 and DL250-7 loaders have smooth and responsive hydraulics and auxiliary hydraulic connections. They are equipped as standard with a 3rd spool valve with settable flow and detent function, providing a constant flow for hydraulically driven attachments. A 4th spool valve is available as an option on both models. Operators can easily control hydraulic attachments via the proportional switch on the joystick, whilst various tyre options are also available to cover the widest possible range of conditions. In addition, the machines can be ordered with an optional 300kg counterweight, depending on the application. Doosan is also offering a wider choice of options to provide more work tools for a better match with applications, further increasing output. The standard bucket capacities on the DL220-7 and DL250-7 are 2.3 and 2.5 m3, respectively. The Z-kinematic

lift arm delivers high breakout forces and lifting capacities, especially for heavy materials, and a large dump angle for efficiently unloading sticky materials. Both wheel loaders are available as HL versions featuring a high lift arm and the 300kg counterweight, where higher dump heights and increased versatility are required.

Higher Performance The LIS (Load Isolation System) provides a smoother ride and higher comfort for the operator, as well as higher productivity due to improved stability when the wheel loader is moving. The lift arm is cushioned by a hydropneumatic accumulator linked to the lift hydraulic system, acting as a shock absorber. The benefits include reduced cycle times, higher performance and better fuel efficiency while carrying out load and carry applications.

The new wheel loaders have automatic 4-speed powershift transmission and Limited Slip Differential (LSD) axles as standard. Options include a 5-gear powershift transmission with Lock-up torque convertor and heavy duty HDL axles, providing enhanced traction with Differential Hydraulic Lock (DHL), especially in high-load environments. The differential hydraulic 100 per cent lock can be engaged at full torque automatically without any action from the operator. Improvements have been made throughout the powertrain, to provide operators with an 11 per cent increase in travel speeds up to a maximum of 40km/h. The upgraded hydraulic system and major parts ensure greatly improved durability and maintainability. Providing increased peace of mind for the customer, the high reliability

and quality of the new DL220-7 and DL2507 wheel loaders are backed up by a standard full 3-year/5,000 hour warranty. Power is provided by a new DL06V Stage V 6-cylinder engine, with an output of 119 kW (160 HP) and 128 kW (172 HP), respectively. With 5 per cent greater fuel efficiency than the previous generation machines, whilst delivering impressive output and torque, the powertrains meet Stage V emission regulations without the need for exhaust gas recirculation, through the use of selective catalyst reduction, diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter after-treatment technologies. The Doosan Smart Guidance System (DSGS) is a new feature which analyses the driving habits and behaviour of the operator and helps them to achieve the most fuelefficient operation. The DSGS provides a score and guide (the Score-Graph) of the operator’s driving pattern to show fuel economy, efficiency and durability by category. The new cab offers a greatly improved field of vision for the operator, with blind spots around the cab minimised and a 14 per cent larger glass window area compared to the previous DL-5 models. There’s also the option of electrically adjustable rear view mirrors for added safety. Full LED working lights are installed on the cab (two on both the front and rear as standard, with the option of four or six each at the front and rear). For higher pedestrian safety, the LED lights on the rear bonnet have an automatic strobe function to indicate when the wheel loader is reversing. Inside the cab, the new wheel loaders offer significantly enhanced operating comfort, an enhanced steering system and advanced electronic controls. Using the new

Doosan Smart Key system on the control panel in the cab, the operator can start the machine using a keyless device, helping to prevent machine theft. The Smart Key system provides remote door control, door lock and unlock, door release, searching and other functions. The control panel also includes two USB sockets. The new cab has a Grammer Actimo XXL seat with fully adjustable horizontal and vertical suspension settings, a pneumatic lumbar function and seat heating as standard. There is a 3-point safety belt with alarm icons on the new Doosan Smart Touch and on the gauge panel, which features a new layout and anti-reflective glass. The new EMCV (Electric Main Control Valve) joystick fully integrated in the armrest is another standard feature in the cab, providing the operator with smoother and precise controllability of the lift arm and attachments on the wheel loaders. Features available via the EMCV system include Automatic Return-to-Dig, Bucket Tilt Kick-out and the

bucket crowd stop position and shock prevention for higher operator comfort. Using the new Doosan Smart Touch, the sensitivity of the ergonomic joystick control can be set and altered according to operator preferences. User-friendly and easy to read in all conditions, the new 8in. touchscreen provides all the important settings and information the operator needs in one place. The operator also has increased leg room, an enlarged storage area and cool-box position and an improved air conditioning system (with optimised air circulation). The wheel loaders are factory-installed with the latest DoosanCONNECT wireless fleet monitoring system, providing comprehensive information about machine performance.

QUARRYING EQUIPMENT

TOP C T Whether it’s in quarrying or waste management, Catplant is committed to cutting edge equipment

C

atplant was established 40 years ago as a plant hire firm and has seen significant change during its four decades in business. Now operating from Hazel Lane Quarry, near Doncaster, the company has developed into a full circle operation, benefitting from the latest in connected technology to keep its fleet of equipment running and operations profitable and productive. “The business was founded by my late father-in-law, Syd Boulton,” explained Managing Director, Ronnie Harrod. “In the early days, we supported the National Coal Board, then British Coal but, as the industry declined, we looked for another way to put our equipment to work. We moved into demolition until the opportunity to operate Hazel Lane Quarry arose, which is where we now focus our main line of business.” But Catplant runs quite a unique operation from its 136-acre site. Alongside its quarrying operations – removing magnesium limestone and clay to produce aggregates – it operates one of Yorkshire’s last remaining landfill sites. Catplant fills the

void left by its quarrying activities with nonhazardous waste; it currently has space for landfill up until 2042, while the business continues to quarry and create future space for the longer term. The company’s openness to new ideas and technology has helped it be resilient through industry change and stand the test of time. In 2011, it took its operations to the next level and installed two gas to electric generators, which it fuels with extracted methane from landfill to produce electricity that it sells back to the grid.

“Since the early days we have used Cat. We find it to be reliable, it offers a good resale value, and we have a good relationship with Finning.”

Developing skills, embracing technology “It’s always been important to us to have a highly skilled in-house team so we can engineer as much as possible ourselves. We have everything from drivers, operators and fitters to an electrician and a welder. We do as much as we can in house – engineering our own landfill cells, digging out, profiling, reshaping, installing clay protection layers and more,” added Harrod. “Of course, we also need the technology to match,” emphasised Harrod. “Since the early days we have used Cat equipment, as we find it to be good, reliable and it offers a good resale value. We now run an incredible range of Cat products: soil compaction equipment, multiple types of excavator, dozers, track loaders, wheel loaders, waste compactors, dump trucks and more. We’ve always had a good relationship with Finning, but it has really developed over the last 15 years.” “I’ve worked closely with Ronnie and the Catplant team for the last seven years,” explained Ben Jarzyna, Product Support

“Always keen to incorporate next generation technology, the latest purchase is a D9T Dozer and D6 High Drive Electric Drive Dozer.” National Account Manager at Finning. “The team feels like an extended family. The relationship goes much further than just equipment supplier, we are invested in doing everything we can for the them.” “The latest technology, alongside the skills of our staff, were crucial in proving to the landfill sector that we can deliver to a high standard. And it worked – we are now the only site left in the local area,” enthused Harrod.

running,” emphasised Harrod. “An early alert of an air filter or air flow problem can be the difference between a simple maintenance task and a new engine!” “Our close relationship with the team means that whatever fault may arise, Catplant knows what to do or who to contact,” added Jarzyna. “We are always happy to help – we deliver parts for next day delivery, so once the team receives the 75- or 50-hour warning they know they will receive a service pack in time.”

Everything connected Mobile equipment is not the only thing to contain a Cat engine at Hazel Lane Quarry. Catplant operates two Terex Finlay 696 inclined screeners, which are fed by Terex Finlay J-1170 jaw crushers, all powered by Cat engines and all connected by telematics software. “All the Cat equipment on site, including the screening engines, are connected by VisionLink,” added Jarzyna. “This software gives a single view of the health, location and productivity of its entire fleet. The software will send an alert to either a phone or a laptop if there is a problem so that it can be addressed before a bigger problem arises.” “Telematics gives us a real awareness of our efficiency,” explained Harrod. “It helps us understand both the operator’s performance and the status of the machine. For example, we can see how much fuel each machine is using, something that we can then address to reduce costs. “The software sends us alerts with the relevant fault codes, so our maintenance team can step in easily. This is absolutely paramount to keeping our equipment

22 MAY / JUNE I CPN

Equipment put to the test Catplant keeps its equipment hard at work, and, when the time comes to replace something, the company usually sells it back to Finning and purchases a replacement. However, on some of its larger equipment, it has opted for the manufacturer’s Certified Rebuild Program, to give its existing technology a new lease of life. “The first machine we had rebuilt was from an 836 Landfill Compactor,” said Harrod. “The reliability of this equipment is vital to our operations – without it we can’t achieve the correct waste ratio in the landfill cells. The rebuild was done to a very high

standard and we were so pleased with the outcome – 17,000 hours more life and a new warranty – that we had a second machine rebuilt a few years later.”

What does the future hold? Always keen to incorporate next generation technology, the latest purchase is a D9T Dozer, which it plans to wrap in commemorative images to celebrate the company’s 40 years in business. It has also invested in the new D6 High Drive Electric Drive Dozer to help drive fuel efficiency and performance. “Having the latest technology has been key to our success, and our relationship with Finning is vital to this. We’ve worked with some fantastic people over the years, always straightforward, honest and helpful,” concluded Harrod.

QUARRYING EQUIPMENT

The quarry sector is looking to TyreWatch for improved safety and cost control

P

rinciple considerations for quarry operators are health and safety, and efficient materials extraction. Given the potentially dangerous working environment, the need for strict safety procedures is paramount – not only to protect personnel but also to help maintain production levels. TyreWatch maintains its remote monitoring and control systems dovetail perfectly with these essential requirements, particularly as under-inflated heavy equipment tyres cannot always be determined by visual inspection alone.

Under-inflation Large earthmoving tyres can run underinflated for weeks, which causes the tyre to over flex. This, in turn, causes the tyre to wear faster, the rim components to suffer premature damage and the potential for a serious incident to be ever present. Moreover, it is a well-known fact that under-inflation leads to shortened tyre tread lifespans and can make the tyre casing at the end of its first tread life unsuitable for remoulding. TyreWatch Sales and Field Technical Manager, Peter Roffey explains: “Running under-inflated tyres leads to overheating and potential blow-outs which inevitably puts site operatives at risk. Connect this with the extensive paperwork required to comply

24 MAY / JUNE I CPN

with the HSE’s RIDDOR directive (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulation) and there is a perfect case for the TyreWatch system to ensure all-round safety and adherence to the law.” Roffey explains that its customers are increasingly requesting tyre pressure and temperature data for their connected machines to improve onsite working practices and thereby embedding remote monitoring into their core operating systems. A current example can be seen with Imerys, a market-leading supplier of mineral-based solutions, who report

significant reduction in tyre replacement and vehicle downtime since installing a TyreWatch remote monitoring service at its quarry in Furzebrook, Dorset. With a mixed fleet of off-road heavy plant and six bulk tippers, Imerys were looking for a solution to combat problems associated with tyre-pressure loss and, following a recommendation, turned to the company’s PlantSmart telematics system.

Reduced Downtime “In former times,” explains Quarry Supervisor, James Johnson, “we might have no idea if a certain tyre was losing pressure or failing, so with no opportunity to resolve the problem we would have to take vehicles out of service and make emergency tyre replacements. This not only interrupted workflow but also presented a potential safety hazard.” Having this type of connected solution is the safe way forwards to alert quarry operators to attend to tyre pressures in good

024_CPN_MAYJUNE21_Layout 1 27/05/2021 12:17 Page 25

time and, accordingly, the system delivers maintenance and warning notifications before the tyres reach a critical pressure. This allows the machines to carry on working with tyre repairs being planned in for the end of the day or during a driver rest period. Using the automatically captured data also helps operators to look at site trends for tyre temperature peaks: large earthmover tyres heat up, and take a long time to cool down, so real time temperature records can help to reduce tyre overheat, which prevents loss of tyre service life, improves safety and reduces cost. “The best outcome for all quarry operators and owners” adds Peter Roffey, “is to invest in a connected system that simultaneously notifies the quarry management, maintenance teams and – by cab alert – machine operators of every low tyre pressure event.” Roffey says that while TPMS is by no means a new concept, its telematics monitoring system takes it a step further by making sure all issues are monitored in realtime without the need to solely rely on the

driver or later visual inspections – which could be too late. The added benefit to the operator is paperless, digital reporting which can be instantly accessed for all compliance checks and inspections. “We use the direct TPMS on our quarrybased vehicles with high pressure tyres, while on the loading shovels, a pit tractor and our bulk tippers we use the IoT (Internet of Things) remote system – which also provides temperature monitoring.” This, says James, is useful to detect any sudden temperature increases, which could indicate

a binding brake, hub failure, damaged suspension, or incorrect wheel alignment.” In addition to the in-cab alarm system, automatic alerts are sent to designated email addresses within the Imerys team, notifying them of any events as they occur and automatically updating as the problem develops. According to James, by never running an underinflated tyre, Imerys are permanently saving on fuel and maintenance costs. Furthermore, by greatly reducing particulate emissions from tyre tread abrasion, the company is also helping to minimise its environmental impact. “We’ve saved many tyres using TyreWatch,” concludes James Johnson, “and the safety and environmental aspects are farreaching. We have certainly embraced the benefits of predictive tyre management, and I’m pleased to say, so too have all of our quarry transport contractors.”

GOING FULLTILT

O

wner operator, Barry Taylor of BJ Taylor in Gloucester, bought his first Engcon tiltrotator in June 2002 and he hasn't looked back since. In fact, he has recently upgraded for the third time to not only a brand new Engcon EC214 with EC-Oil, but a new Hitachi ZX130LCN-6 excavator to power it. Focused on projects that are not your typical groundworks contracting, Barry will be using his latest investment to perform landscaping, forestry, site clearance and even demolition works. When we joined him on site, he had only just received his new machine and latest buckets, testing both on a neighbouring plot.

Barry Taylor of Gloucesterbased BJ Taylor

An early Engcon adopter has renewed his association with the tiltrotator manufacturer

Explaining how his journey with the company has progressed to his latest investment Barry said: "I first went to a dig day where I saw the Engcon in action and subsequently got in touch with a local rep. They offered me a trial of the product and fitted it to the JCB excavator I had at the time. After using it for a few hours, I told them they could keep it on and bought it straight away and have never looked back.

"Because I do all my own maintenance, I have really recognised the impact and Engcon unit can have on my overall running costs over the years. With the tiltrotator doing so much more work my track wear has been dramatically reduced. "With the latest EC-Oil automatic hydraulic connector, I no longer have to change the attachments manually. I can use the in-cab Quick Hitch Standard Control locking system with its in-built sensors that monitor ground pressure to safely remove a bucket for example. "Before I would have to wait about 5 minutes to depressurise the hydraulic lines before manually detaching them and putting the next attachment on. This process would also involve me getting out of the machine on a site and the inevitable loss of some hydraulic oil, not to mention additional wear on components.

“You reduce maintenance costs, idle and downtime, and get jobs done quicker, which is great if you have a good work pipeline.” 28 MAY / JUNE I CPN

028_CPN_MAYJUNE21_Layout 1 27/05/2021 12:15 Page 29

"Of course, all of this takes time, which reduces my overall productivity. By my calculations having the EC Oil fitted I will be saving between 30 minutes to an hour each day, depending on the type of work I am doing. It will also change how I complete projects. “For example, I do hedge cutting and forestry work, particularly in the summer months, and have invested in a heavy-duty saw attachment and grab for these applications. With EC-Oil, I will switch out between the two attachments and clean up as I go along, eliminating the need to track backwards and forwards as I previously would have. "This reduces track wear and reduces my fuel burn, which directly impacts my profitability. With more clients interested in reducing carbon emissions, this is a big selling point. It's also part of the reason I invested in a new Hitachi excavator to replace my previous unit. "To be honest new clients are very surprised when I come on site with an Engcon unit, as they are generally used to standard excavator set-ups. It also takes a bit

of getting used to when I price by the job as typically what they expect to take say 3.5 days I can generally complete in 2.5 days. And this is based on my previous machine setup, so I can only see a further reduction in the time it takes me to complete a job with my new setup. "I can also see that I will have the ability to take on bigger jobs in the future, especially as a few years ago I persuaded another local business that I work with to invest in an Engcon setup. Investment wise it just makes financial sense. “You reduce maintenance costs, idle or downtime and get jobs done quicker to move onto the next job. This is great if you have a good work pipeline. It's a no brainer really and payback on your investment is quicker than you think.”

A T TA C H M E N T S Construction Plant News profiles one of the leading players in the attachments sector and looks at what’s new in the already considerable Worsley Plant portfolio.

S

ince it was established in 1996, Worsley Plant has developed into an attachment specialist with a tool for every job. Whether it’s in construction, demolition, waste & recycling or quarrying, the company can supply a huge range of solutions from its many brands, with strategically placed northern and southern depots facilitating a national reach.

30 MAY / JUNE I CPN

FORMING AN ATTACHMENT “We wanted to innovate from the outset,” declares Managing Director, Sean Heron. “That’s why we were early pioneers of excavator-mounted crushing and screening buckets, and it’s a tradition that continues with the MB brand today. We’re seeing more and more people converting to the concept, and Worsley Plant now offers MB Crusher Buckets for machines ranging from 2.8 to 70 tonnes.” The commercial and environmental benefits of on-site recycling are now an established fact, with the savings in transportation costs and the importing of aggregate on to a project potentially considerable. Whilst it was an idea that was well received from Worsley Plant’s very earliest days, the fourth generation of the technology is now faster, and produces higher quality material. “For many the logistics of deploying a static crushing machine onto a compact site are not feasible,” continues Sean, “but on jobs where there’s already going to be an excavator present it makes perfect sense to utilise a crushing bucket and we quickly found a receptive audience.”

“By increasing the size of the jaw – and introducing a vibrating plate which pulls material through faster – the MB Series 4 buckets now have a larger capacity, and are as a consequence 25 per cent quicker in operation than the previous model – and that’s been a real game changer in terms of bringing more people on board,” enthuses Sean. “The fundamental equation for any contractor is cost per tonne, and if you can utilise one engine to produce all that you need, it becomes more and more viable.”

Screening Buckets Similarly, the Remu Screening Buckets Worsley also supplies have been on a parallel journey of continual improvement and are now saving contractors time and money on site both before and after the crushing process. Simultaneously scoring points on sustainability and productivity, as well as improving the quality of recycled construction waste, they will equally reduce the amount that’s destined for landfill.

addition to that range, and brings new technology to the sector. Powered by a Ramplifier installed inside the cycliner rod, it more than doubles the pressure from 350bar to as high as 700bar. That makes it the perfect weapon in heavy industrial demolition, where thick reinforced concrete is in evidence. “We were on a site recently where a 2 ½ tonne tool on a 25-tonne machine, was delivering the same break out force as a 7 tonne unit on a 70 tonne excavator would have provided,” Sean reports.

Extensive Range

In 2013, Worsley Plant further expanded its offering with the addition of the Lehnhoff Variolock Quickcoupler range. The fully automatic system allows for the changing of attachments in seconds from the safety of the cab and is particularly well-suited to demolition applications, where an operator is required to switch between grapple, shear or breaker on a regular basis. It has also found a home in waste & recycling and, on jobs where space is tight, it may well be possible to reduce the number of excavators required and replace them with just one multi-tasking machine – a welcome costsaving exercise for any contractor.

Where this precision-made German engineering departs from its competitors in the field is in higher oil flows. Thanks to larger valves the Lehnhoff operates at lower temperatures, and with reduced fuel consumption, as well as less wear and tear on the equipment. In addition, because the Lehnhoff can reduce the distance between the end of the dipper and the bucket compared to other quick hitches on the market, it has greater breakout force than many of its rivals. “We’ve always been greater believers in making sure that our customers get the solutions that’s right for them,” reveals the Worsley Plant founder, “and that’s a policy we pursue with the Lehnhoff. In certain sectors the time and cost savings can be prodigious but if you’re not changing attachments fairly regularly then you should be thinking very carefully about making the investment. I’ve actually been approached by some civil engineering companies who are engaged primarily in mass excavation, and we’ve had to tell them that we didn’t think it was the right option for them.” Where the Lehnhoff has been specified appropriately, however, its adopters have reported considerable reductions in downtime, not least from a decline in incidents of hose damage. As well as that, by considerably increasing the speed at which an operators can change tools, it encourages on site personnel to use the right attachment for the job, thereby reducing the potential for misuse of equipment. In 2011, Worsley Plant became the exclusive UK distributor for Dutch-built Rotar brand, which includes a host of attachments for the demolition contractor. The Rotar Concrete Cutter is the latest

With the addition of Montabert breakers – for whom Worsley Plant is now the largest UK dealer – and Dynaset hydraulic magnet technology, the attachments specialist has a solution for every application. Indeed, it is a scope and reach which is continually expanding, whilst Sean and his team pride themselves on the level of expertise they can offer clients.

Miller explains why its GTS compact quick coupler offers an unprecedented level of convenience to the mini excavator sector

COMPACT KING

H

ere at Miller, we’ve seen the growing trend in consumer acceptance of hydraulic quick couplers, and we know of a number of mini excavator owners who are seeing the benefits of converting their fleets from manual to hydraulic systems. Thanks to their lower initial investment costs, fewer internal components, and generally lighter overall weight, the compact coupler market has historically been dominated by manual couplers. While investment in fully hydraulic quick coupler technology is sometimes seen as a cost burden, in reality more and more owners are seeing it as having significant cost and productivity advantages over a manual coupler. As the home of quick coupler expertise, we strongly believe that coupler technology has a key role to play in improving the operator experience, making on-site operations safer, more convenient and capable of withstanding the most challenging working environments. That’s why Miller has introduced its new GTS compact quick coupler series, which is set to bring innovation to the mini excavator industry like never before. The brand-new GTS series range is the lowest, lightest and safest fully hydraulic twinlocking ISO13031 quick coupler on the marketplace, offering 1 – 6 tonne excavators a wide range of pick-ups for any attachment within the same class, all from the comfort and security of the cab. Easy to operate, and far lighter and stronger

than any other quick coupler, this attachment optimises your machines’ performance. The Miller GT Series has been designed from the inside out. It’s an excavator tool built to remove hindrances, so you can do your greatest work. Barry Robison Director of Product Management commented: “In today’s climate, we understand that reducing costs and improving efficiency are key to ensuring profitability. More than ever the performance of the compact excavator is essential to the day-to-day productivity of job sites and that there is increasing economic pressures on the operator to get more done in a day. “For example, when operating with a manual coupler you either need an additional ground worker to carry out the physical attachment changeover or, if in the cases when you are working alone, the excavator operator is required to physically leave the cab of the machine and use manual force to

position the pin into place, causing the change out process to take longer. In comparison, by decreasing the time it takes to change attachments to just seconds, making the switch to the Miller GTS compact quick coupler can be transformational.” “A compact quick coupler is an investment that adds convenience and flexibility to your compact excavator in just about every application,” continues Barry. “Purchasing a coupler can save valuable time on site by using its universal OEM variable pin pick up to allow you to switch between a bucket, ripper, rake, mechanical grabs, etc... and as such can be transformational for decreasing the time it takes to tackle a job that requires different attachments.” “In some case we have had customers saving over an hour a day from faster changeovers and reduced double digging due to the increased versatility on offer. If you want to increase productivity of your compact machine, a Miller GTS compact quick coupler is a must-have piece of equipment at a cost you can afford.”
