VIEWPOINT Editor

TAKEN FOR A FUEL ‘‘C

risis? What Crisis?” Given the veritably stone-deaf ears that have been turned to the urgent pleas to delay reforms of the red diesel and biofuels rebate recently, you could be forgiven for thinking that’s the attitude Lee Jones, in the corridors of Editor Whitehall. Instead, we’ve had a reduction in fuel duty that will do little to mitigate current and future rises, and a ploughing on with National Insurance increases that will further furrow construction employers’ foreheads at a time when they’re already facing rising wage pressures. Of course, when those famous three words were (wrongly) attributed to then Prime Minister, Jim Callaghan back in 1979, the country, and the economy was in a rather more parlous state than it is today. The levels of activity that contractors and plant hirers are currently enjoying postpandemic is certainly to be welcomed but it is not without its own complications, not least the availability of machinery, which is in turn inflating values in the used market. At the same time, if we are for the sake of the climate and the economy to wean ourselves from an addiction to fossil fuels, then the cudgel of removing a cheaper fuel during a period of escalating costs is the wrong weapon to wield. Instead, there should be real incentives to using cleaner alternatives built into the tax system alongside an inducement to develop and adopt alternative sources of power. The industry’s commitment to decarbonise should not be doubted but a two-year global pandemic, followed by the most serious conflict in Europe since the Second World War, has inevitably disrupted that ambition, and more realism should be injected into the debate. The onward advance of electric machinery, alternative

fuels and hydrogen will ultimately be relentless, but it does need to be accompanied by support from legislators, or the inevitable result will be build costs passed on to clients and consumers. Whoever the occupant of Number 11 might be it should be recognised that they are relatively powerless in the face of global commodity and supply chain challenges. What they are firmly in control of, however, is levels of duty levied on these shores. Ahead of Chancellor, Rishi Sunak’s Spring Statement the Construction Plant-hire Association was, for example, calling for the Super Deduction Allowance to be both extended and made permanent. If hirers are to more readily invest in machines that include the latest in clean and emissions-busting technologies, they will need access to the SDA – or a scheme very much like it. Instead, the current reality is that they are excluded from claiming the 130 per cent first-year capital allowance for qualifying assets. Moreover, calls for the Allowance to be retained will no doubt grow louder as next year’s deadline for its removal draws nearer. If the procurers of plant and machinery are to properly plan for the future they need much more certainty in pricing and financial incentives would go some way to injecting some much needed business confidence. It is also worthwhile remembering the role that the industry played in one of the darkest times in our national memory. Throughout the pandemic, whilst other sectors stalled, construction was effectively operating as the engine room of the economy, eschewing furlough whilst contributing to the delivery of vital infrastructure for the NHS. Those businesses are now in need of some care of their own, and it would be impossible to deny that they don’t deserve it.

Construction Plant News puts the questions to Phil Parker, Sunbelt Rentals Chief Financial Officer on the company’s sustainability policy What’s changed in the last two years for Sunbelt Rentals since the start of the pandemic? We announced our rebrand from A-Plant to Sunbelt Rentals on March 5th 2020, just before the pandemic started. Our reasoning for this was entirely about creating one unified business that focused on our customers and our people. Based on direct

input from our people and our customers we reset our vision, mission and our core values. One of the values that we introduced was acting responsibly, and as a business we are ultimately striving to be more sustainable.

Is Sunbelt Rentals seeing a change in demand since the start of the pandemic and how has it impacted the business?

Phil Parker

Yes, absolutely. The uncertainty that the pandemic brought has highlighted all the benefits that rental solutions can provide to customers across multiple sectors. We’ve also been fortunate to be able use the depth and breadth of our offering to provide a unified solution to the NHS, through the provision of covid-19 testing centres, as well as working with event organisers to relaunch the events industry following the aftermath of the pandemic. With each of these opportunities the demand for sustainable and eco-friendly products has never been higher.

Has there been a shift to more sustainable or green requirements? Yes, every conversation with every major contractor leads to a discussion about how they can be more sustainable. The biggest changes we’ve seen in recent years is linked to our power generation, accommodation, lighting and site services’ business. Decarbonisation is a key focus and in 2021 alone we supplied a number of fossil fuel free events, including COP26 and G7 Summit, where we supplied electric telehandlers, powered access, solar tower lights, electric charging

What’s your view in terms of electric versions of mini-excavators or telehandlers? From a concept and design perspective they’re great and the market is certainly moving in that direction. At the moment we’re finding that this type of equipment works best in niche applications such as low noise pollution zones, as well as underground, but feedback so far is extremely positive. We’re looking to the future and welcome further investment in the power infrastructure required to match the demand for this type of equipment.

stations, Stage V generators with HVO fuel, accommodation units and electric bikes. Our tower light fleet is heavily weighted towards solar, battery and hybrid technology and is the greenest in the market. We have over 4,500 low or zero carbon tower lights available to hire. And it’s not just greener equipment that’s in demand, telematics and data driven technology has never been more important. That’s why we have significantly invested in cloud-based solutions such as Command Centre, our secure customer portal accessible through the Sunbelt Rentals website. Designed to help our customers efficiently manage all their rental equipment 24/7. This investment in technology will help to drive the decarbonisation agenda and will enable customers to operate in a more sustainable way.

We understand that Sunbelt Rentals is leading the way in introducing greener technologies, can you tell me more about this? Last year Sunbelt Rentals’ UK placed an order of €76 million with JCB, with 92 per cent of that being sustainable, Stage V or electric. Much of our new investment is in assets with enhanced environmental credentials. Our tower light fleet is heavily weighted towards solar or battery technology. We offer Stage V plant equipment, eco-insulated accommodation units, electric bikes, electric vehicle charging, hybrid power solutions and much more. At 95 per cent recyclable construction, our Trakway system is the most environmentally friendly system available, and we’re also working alongside many of our customers to make the switch to HVO (Hydrotreated

Vegetable Oil) fuel and start reducing carbon emissions by 90 per cent – we are currently trialling hydrogen fuel generator propositions. Partnering with innovative start-ups we are keen to see how we can use technology to enhance battery storage capabilities which will reduce fuel usage. We’ve made a significant financial investment in electric delivery vehicles, which will increase over time – 80 per cent of emissions in the UK comes from delivery vehicles. We anticipate trialling hydrogen HGV vehicles in the future too.

What impact have you seen within the business by introducing these types of cutting edge, greener solutions? Introducing green solutions has started to shift the mindset of people who were perhaps quite sceptical at first. It’s also highlighted the need to invest in training and upskilling our workforce, now more so than ever. We’ve made it our goal to upgrade our locations and the environments in which we operate from. This investment includes the move to a sustainable logistics fleet to deliver our equipment and solutions. We are also working with Distribution Network Operators (DNO’s) who can help to install electric vehicle charging points. This will ensure that we have a sustainable fuel source as and when these changes come about.

Lastly, it is clear that you’ve made some great advances in the last 12 months. What else can we expect to see from Sunbelt Rentals? You can expect to see Sunbelt Rentals operating in new markets that we haven’t necessarily ever been in before. Late last year we launched our 360 solutions, whereby we offer our customers a complete site solution. We are uniquely placed as the only rental company in the UK to offer such a solution, and we have a team of experts available to design, manage and coordinate projects offering clients a fully managed service in addition to our rental products.

The E-Series is the latest instalment in one of the plant sector’s most enduring stories

ACE THE

T

his year CASE Construction Equipment celebrates an extraordinary 180 years as a machinery manufacturer, but in that long history it can have witnessed few epochs quite like our own. The decisions we make today on regulations, technologies and emerging trends will determine the direction of travel for the next century or more, and it these challenges that is driving competition and improvements in every aspect of plant. Customer expectations are, as a consequence, higher than ever and that’s why the E-Series, with its focus on efficiency, economy and user experience, has been introduced. “Over the last few years we’ve been working with our engineers to really understand our customer needs and support product development,” explains Egidio Galano, Product Management

14 MARCH / APRIL I CPN

Director at the E-Series launch event, who adds that the end user “will only ever be satisfied if our products meet their needs and improve their business operations and, ever since we started the development of the E-Series, customers have been at the centre of the project.” The E-Series range includes seven new models, in the 13 – 30 tonne class, and everything about these excavators has been designed around the people who will be using them. The Case Intelligent Hydraulic System (CIHS) is now integrated with four new work modes, for instance. Super Power (SP) mode delivers maximum productivity, (P) Power mode provides a surge of power when needed and, when set to Lifting, object handling is optimised. Moreover, when paired with the new FPT Industrial (FPT) Stage V engine, Eco (E) mode can deliver fuel

savings of up to 17 per cent. In addition, customisable hydraulic settings – where the operator can adjust the flow priority according to boom, dipper and slew movements – all contribute to considerable advances in precision and efficiency. Safety, visibility and comfort have not been neglected either, with more space and redesigned features. A thoughtful FOPS protected cab layout includes a new joystick set-up that’s designed to increase operator comfort, even over prolonged periods of use, with automatic air conditioning ensuring optimal climate control, and a 10in. LCD monitor. In the crawler excavator sector robustness in non-negotiable and this is reflected in a newly configured undercarriage. The upper rollers have been strengthened with the addition of four bolts, where previously there were two, and an access point allows dirt to fall through without contaminating the grease point. The rollers at the bottom have also seen improvements, and the result is less

014_CPN_MARAPR22_Layout 1 28/03/2022 19:46 Page 15

vibration for the operator when tracking the machine. Not only that but the drive motors have been enlarged, which delivers more power to an operator when turning. The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) free Stage V FPT engine is equally packed with efficiency gains. Within the E-Series stable, machines from 13-18 tonnes are powered by a 4.5-litre engine, and up to 30 tonnes there’s a 6.7-litre unit, each with improved power and torque. Capable of running on either regular diesel or the increasingly popular HVO (Hydro-treated Vegetable Oil), greater efficiency during combustion allows for fuels savings of between 12-17 per cent. Furthermore, the

patented FPT after-treatment solution – HIeSCR2 – is completely maintenance free, with no requirement for mechanical cleaning or replacement. Continuing the theme of maximum uptime, extended maintenance system bushings are designed for 1,000-hour greasing intervals on all arm and boom pins. Compared to the previous series, maintenance intervals have been doubled on engine oil, filters and fuel filters and a more compact design of the undercarriage greasing cylinder improves access, and aids cleaning. All that is backed up by a full range of Case Service Solutions, each designed to support customers during the entire machine lifespan and avoid unexpected costs. “Case Care is a detailed planned maintenance programme dedicated to maximising uptime and includes regular inspections, strategic replacement of parts, technical expertise from the manufacturer, backed up by trained technicians from the dealer network,” reveals Peter Garry, Director, Aftermarket Solutions Europe, who has helped developed the services offered with the new E-Series. “The standard planned maintenance programmes are available for up to six years or 10,000 hours. Case Protect and Case Fluid Analysis offer further piece of mind, with an extended warranty programme and fluid analysis schedule, that goes beyond that standard.” Customers are also now demanding connectivity and here SiteConnect and SiteWatch deliver. Again, available as standard, the former allows machines to be constantly monitored by a Case dealer who can run remote diagnostics and analytics prior to, or instead of, physical attendance,

whilst alerts will also inform the dealer of specific issues, who can then proactively intervene. In order to access the service all that operators or fleet managers need to do is scan the QR code located in the cab, and download the Site Manager App, which will allow a connection to be established between the excavator and dealer. Case SiteWatch provides a wealth of useful information about both the machine and driver performance via an easily accessible portal. Real-time data includes geolocation, enhanced security through geofencing, and user alerts, as well as fuel consumption, machine hours, and idle time. Customers can then identify key trends in utilisation and implement any necessary changes, taking advantage of potential cost reductions in the process. Feedback from operators who have already been privileged to have occupied an E-Series driver seat has included praise for the 360º camera, and the easy to use and clear in cab display. The improved engine performance means tasks can be undertaken at lower revs with reduced noise, whilst the seven new E-Series models have equally been described as flexible and precise.

For the last three years Mark Palmer-Broughton of On Your Marks Plant Hire has been digging out the footings for extensions, excavating swimming pools, and undertaking all manner of landscaping and small building works. Previously, however, he has worked on units anything up to 80 tonnes in size, and that gives him invaluable insight into the power, versatility and performance of his Takeuchi TB216 – not to mention considerable prowess at the driver’s seat. “I bought my first Takeuchi to do some extra work of my own on weekends,” recalls the Berkshire-based owner/operator, “and things just really took off from there. There’s a lot more demand for mechanised solutions on even the smallest jobs now because builders have recognised just how quickly you can complete the works and move on to the next. When they hire me they get a very

driveways, levelling, or more substantial swimming pool projects, there’s so much a digger of this size can do.

Industry experience

“The thing that really stands out is the digging power that’s at your disposal from a relatively small unit.” experienced digger driver and a machine as a single package. I’ve been working alongside a friend of mine, landscaper Christian Light at CJ’s Garden Maintenance for the last few years and, whether it’s that kind of job,

From his own knowledge of the excavator market Mark new that Takeuchi was the brand he wanted to invest in when he was setting up his business, and it’s proven to be the right decision, with his current TB216 the second unit he’s owned from the Japanese compact plant specialist: “It’s a superb machine and I don’t think there’s anything else like it on the market,” he continues. We caught up with Mark and his 1.6 tonne unit on an extension in Newbury where he was digging the footings for a 4metre extension, as well as removing the spoil for the foul drainage connections. Mark bought the TB216 from Takeuchi dealer, CBL last year and it’s been in daily use since, even during the darkest days of the lockdowns. Indeed, Mark reports that he has been even busier during the pandemic as many homebound property owners look to maximise their living space and enhance outdoor areas.

So what is it about Takeuchi that appeals? “The thing that really stands out is the digging power that’s at your disposal from a relatively small unit. The expandable and retractable tracks are a very useful feature as well. Fully extended they provide a good deal of stability when excavating and, when pulled in, you can make your way through a 1metre wide gateway, whilst the reach is very good. It’s a very comfortable machine to use and to be seated at – even for long periods – with all of the controls falling easily to hand. Not only that but I know from when I sold my first Takeuchi that the residual values are excellent and was actually very pleasantly surprised by just how much I got for a second-hand digger. Unlike a lot of SME contractors I’m in a position where I’ve driven a lot of mini excavators in my time and there isn’t really

anything to compare to this Takeuchi.” Mark opted for the canopy, but the 1.6 tonne Takeuchi TB216 is also available with a cab, whilst as an additional security feature dealer CBL fitted a tracker to his model, and the unit is further protected by the CESAR Datatag system. The hydraulically retractable track frame moves from 900-1,300mm, with a longer than average track frame of 1,520mm further improving stability. There’s an impressive maximum reach of 4,090mm, a maximum digging depth of 2,390mm, whilst two-speed tracking means the unit can easily tackle challenging terrain.

Attachments Mark has enhanced the versatility of his Takeuchi TB216 with a range of attachments, including a 150, 300, 450 and two 600mm buckets, a grading bucket and a

grab, all of which can be easily transported on his trailer with 3.5 tonne towing capacity vehicle. “On this job, we took down the existing utility room using the grab attachment, and we’ve then dug the footings for an extension that will extend 4.2 metres from the existing property, and it’s only taken a few days, with five lorries loads of muck away taken out in that time. On other projects I’ve done some dredging work on a silted up stream and have also used the Takeuchi with the grab attachment to lift beams for concrete flooring.” Mark reveals that much of his recent work has been in footings and his digger will make short work of the standard 600mm wide, 1.2metre deep trench for an extension. “The boys on this job had to dig out a section where there was a water pipe running across and that took them nearly two hours of backbreaking work, whereas for me it would have been ten minutes with my digger. The only advertising I do is through the On Your Marks Plant Hire Facebook page, and most of my work is word of mouth, and that keeps me more than busy. The service and support from CBL has been first class and the reliability of the machine can’t be faulted.”

MINI MARVEL Construction Plant News goes on site with JCB stalwart Paul Bott Homes

T

he building industry has its fair share of family affairs and Paul Bott Homes is a fine example. The Leicestershirebased firm is presided over by the eponymous Paul, with his three sons, Billy, Tom and Jack joining him on site, whilst wife Sally and daughter Layla manage the office. “When I first started out on my own more than 35 years ago it was initially with extensions but in 1982 we started buying land for new builds,” explains the 62-yearold former bricklayer. Today, his company specialises in high quality homes, typically in the 5-6 bedroom bracket – an area of the market that’s not well serviced by some of

the larger players in the sector. In that time, the Leicestershire housebuilder has also kept up an association with another famous family concern hailing from Staffordshire. “I’ve always owned JCBs and never bothered with anything else,” he reveals. “They have a reputation for doing the job which is certainly backed up by our own experience and we’ve always had a good service from local dealer, Watling JCB. As the contractor and developer we’re responsible for everything from the initial groundworks right through to the finished plot so we need machines that can multi-task.”

A JCB Forklift and an 8-tonne JCB 8080 had already completed many years of sterling service with Paul Bott Homes, whilst the company has previously owned a 3CX Backhoe Loader. At the same time, the breadth of building works the company undertakes was increasingly demanding a smaller machine that could undertake landscaping works in tight spaces, but with the muscle for more extensive groundworks when required.

Compact machine “Once we’ve completed the excavation for the footings, and loaded the spoil onto tippers, we found that an 8-tonne was too big for a lot of the remaining works and we’d been renting a mini as and when we needed it,” explains Paul. “If you’ve got a machine on hire for a fixed period, however, you can easily find that it’s sitting around for a large part of the time whilst you’re still paying the rates. We did the math and came to the conclusion that it’s actually more cost effective to own a smaller digger – especially with current strength of residual values and that’s why we purchased our new 1.8 tonne unit.”

(LtoR) Paul Bott and Jack Bott of Paul Bott Homes with their new JCB 18Z-1 mini excavator

JCB’s 18Z-1 is the first zero tailswing option in its class from the manufacturer, and its vital statistics make for a versatile solution. “It’s ideal for getting into gardens, between two properties, or anywhere where you don’t want to make too much of a mess,” adds Jack, “and if you do hit something with it you’re unlikely to do that much damage. Having said that, it’s a very powerful machine in operation,” a fact that Jack demonstrates by pointing to the extensive network of tree roots the 18Z-1 had recently ripped from their current new build project. This nimble 1,830kg unit has all the moves, but is an equal measure a sturdy and durable workhorse. Hoses are routed through the boom, for example, there’s a top mounted ram and 100 per cent steel bodywork. At the same time, operators can achieve a maximum dump height of 2.818m and max dig depth of 2.819m. The retractable tracks aids manoeuvrability through garden gates and enhances stability at their full extension. In addition, with a 1.8tonne weight, the machine can be comfortably towed on a trailer behind a van or pick up complete with a range of attachments, which includes buckets, a breaker and auger. 10 tie down and 4 lifting points also make transportation both speedy and secure. Cleaning and maintenance is facilitated by a 180° opening service door, there’s no daily greasing and a sloping undercarriage design results in minimal soil retention. Paul Bott Homes prides itself on delivering for its own customers and the team demands the same of the machinery they use. “Our properties represent a high spec offer with all the features that the market is currently demanding,” enthuses Paul. “At the moment that’s home offices, open plan spaces – such as expansive kitchen/diners – and large areas of glass, including bi-folds. The consumer wants a property that’s flooded with light and room so, rather than just windows, we’re routinely introducing floor to ceiling glazing in rooms, for example, as well as underfloor heating and smart thermostats throughout. We’re providing double garages with a dedicated home workplace above and a room in roof.”

people and a large fleet of machinery including the new Doosan excavators, enabling us to take care of all of our client’s needs. This has enabled us to develop longstanding partnerships with our clients.” It was that faith in the knowledge and judgement of its employees that was a major factor in the investment in 11 new DX-7 medium-sized crawler excavators from Doosan. The order is being supplied by Doosan Authorised Dealer, T H WHITE Construction, based in Stourport-onSevern and comprises 10 DX140LC-7 14 tonne machines and a DX225LC-7 23 tonne crawler model. “We decided to put a few different Doosan machines on trial from T H White

Construction,” reveals Chris. “We were very impressed by the Doosan machines, but it was the comments from our drivers that really made the difference – they love the new excavators.”

DX-7 Medium-Sized Excavators The DX140LC-7 and DX225LC-7 are part of Doosan’s new medium-sized ‘DX-7’ range of 17 Stage V crawler and wheeled excavator models from 14 to 25 tonne. Altogether, the new medium-sized DX-7 models provide significantly higher performance in every area than the previous generation Stage IV machines. They combine enhanced comfort, increased tool carrier capability and novel operator assist technology, with

new features to boost fuel efficiency, uptime and return on investment, with a focus on increased power, robustness and agility. Maintenance of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) has also been greatly reduced, with no maintenance required until the machine has operated for 8,000 hours. The new DX140LC-7 14.6 tonne excavator is powered by the Doosan D34 4-cylinder Stage V diesel engine providing 86 kW (115 HP) of power at 2,000 RPM. To meet Stage V engine emission regulations, the new DX225LC-7 23 tonne excavator is powered by the latest generation Doosan DL06V diesel engine, providing 129 kW (174 HP) at 1,800 RPM.

Comfort and Controllability The cab on the DX140LC-7 and DX225LC-7 excels in terms of spaciousness and ergonomics, taking operator comfort and ease of operation to new levels. As well as a new seat, the interior space offers more features as standard than other machines on the market, ensuring super controllability and

high precision in all applications. Other key new features in and around the cab include: ■ New 8in. Doosan Smart Touch screen, giving more information via a 30 per cent larger screen ■ DAB audio (Hands-free calling system and Bluetooth) ■ Keyless start (Doosan Smart Key) & remote door lock/unlock ■ Parallel wiper system and new design pedals ■ Improved air flow for defrosting and air conditioning ■ 8 x LED work lights as standard/4 more LED lamps as an option ■ AVM – Around View Monitor with 360° cameras (option) The DX225LC-7 is also the first Doosan excavator of this size to feature Doosan’s innovative D-ECOPOWER virtual bleed off (VBO) technology, providing operators with higher productivity and around 7 per cent lower fuel consumption per hour than

the previous Stage IV model, as well as smoother controls.

Over 60 years serving the midlands T H WHITE Construction represents the full range of equipment from Doosan that also includes wheeled excavators, wheel loaders, articulated dump trucks and attachments, providing full servicing, repairs, warranty and parts back-up from the company’s modern and well-equipped premises, with Doosan-trained technicians and advisors.

LIFTING & ACCESS

ONTHE

TELE JCB is reaching new heights in telescopic handlers with an extension to its rotating range

S

ignificant challenges around materials availability and skilled worker shortages notwithstanding, the housing sector is currently booming. It is a need which is indeed pressing because the market has been languishing in a crisis of affordability for too long, with an imbalance between supply and demand driving up prices, and making the idea of owning a property an unrealistic proposition for far too many people. The government’s has recognised the urgency and set a target of 300,000 new homes to be built every year by the mid2020s and, although completions are moving in the right direction, the current figures are falling well short, with only 220,000 homes delivered in 2020.

Off-site building It is this reality which has precipitated a reevaluation of how new homes are delivered on the ground. MMC (Modern Methods of Construction) – a term which encompasses a range of off-site, near site, and on-site premanufacturing solutions – is far from new but, after years of talk and little action, it is a concept which is now steadily gaining converts. The promise of a quicker and lower cost solution to housebuilding at a time when it is urgently needed has brought on board the likes of Barratt Developments PLC – the company behind Barratt Homes – who recently announced that it is increasing MMC to 30 per cent of its housing completions by 2025, citing time-savings as a key driver.

26 MARCH / APRIL I CPN

There are, in fact, any number of benefits to contractor and developer alike, including a reduction in build schedules, enhanced quality with fewer defects, cuts in energy usage, less waste and safer on site practices, all of which means that even the relatively conservative UK construction sector it’s now taking notice. It is, however, still the case that only 15,000 of those aforementioned 220,000 homes were built using factory or off-site production processes, or just 7 per cent of the total. Having said that, globally, the MMC market is expected to grow from $17 billion in 2020 to $28 billion in 2025 and this

presents the construction equipment industry with some challenges. “Rather than ‘how many’ we need to think about ‘how’,” declares JCB’s Chief Innovation and Growth Officer, Tim Burnhope, “because the equipment required to erect housing using MMC can be very different. Our 13tonne X-Series excavator, the 131X, is just what you need for the initial groundworks, but to get the panels and other prefabricated components in place, you will need outstanding reach, lifting capability, manoeuvrability and versatility. That’s where a new 26m rotating telescopic handler – the JCB 555-260R – comes into its own.”

026_CPN_MARAPR22_Layout 1 28/03/2022 19:43 Page 27

The machine joins the existing 21m 555210R in what can now be classed as a growing rotating range and represents a 3-in1 concept that combines telehandler capabilities with that of a crane and an aerial work platform, all in one package.

Brownfield sites With urbanisation making jobsites ever more compact and congested, a machine that can lift, move, place and position loads quickly and safely is a valuable addition to any fleet. The new 555-260R has a maximum lift capacity of 5.5tonnes – with 2,000kg at full height, or 300kg at the full reach of 21.4m – and it can pick, lift and place materials, panels and modular components even on the tightest of sites. At the driver’s seat the easy-to-use load management system is at eye-level. From here the operator can adopt one of a range of specially developed attachments incorporating RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), ensuring that the correct load chart is always selected for the correct tool. Unlike a mobile crane the machine can be quickly set up on site, with outriggers that can be deployed stored and levelled at the touch of a button. Excellent all-round visibility can be supplemented by camera kits, including a boom camera for precise placement at height. In addition, the lower chassis engine layout means ground level access to the engine bay via the large side doors is straightforward – as

“There will be a time when the rotating telehandler is an essential feature of the UK building site.” are daily service checks. JCB’s highly efficient Stage V 448 DieselMax engine, delivering 112kW or 150hp, provides the power, and the machine benefits from competitive lift end cycle times, with high flow auxiliary hydraulics, ensuring efficient winch work. The unit can, in fact, be used with a wide range of winches and jibs, as well as with standard pallet forks, 360 degree rotating forks, and a 5.5 tonne hook, all with remote control lift end capability.

Moreover, parts compatibility with other Loadall models will streamline fleet management, and servicing, whilst there’s added safety and security of the JCB LiveLink telematics system, providing a range of data on driver behaviour machine performance and asset tracking, and a Thatcham approved immobiliser installed. The 555-260R Rotating Telescopic handler has seen 25,000 man hours in its development, and over 5,000 machine test hours, as well as ROPS, FOPS, structural, and hot and cold climate testing, climatic chambers, and thousands of hours of customer evaluation. It’s not just in housebuilding where it will find a place, of course, because its versatility credentials are just as vital in many infrastructure or commercial schemes, as well as urban maintenance. Although it’s not here yet, there will be a time when the rotating telescopic telehandler is an essential feature of the UK building site, where it’s flexibility and manoeuvrability has become indispensable. Already enjoying a dominant position in the telehandler sector through the Loadall, JCB is well placed to service that need, with more rotating models sure to emerge in the future.

THE

SMART MOVE

Construction Plant News investigates the benefits of the ABAX Smart Connect system

A

plant hirer or contractor of any reasonable size is likely to have a mixed fleet of machines from a number of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). As a result, accessing accurate and up-to-date data on utilisation might involve sourcing the necessary information from multiple platforms. In order to render it into a useable format – which can be interrogated for the purposes of improving operational performance – it will then need to be collected and compiled in one place.

Machine data With ABAX Smart Connect machine owners and fleet managers can obtain on-going status updates on all their machines, and without any additional hardware. As a result, vital information on construction plant is available in a single location. The individual using the equipment, and its location is immediately accessible, whilst it’s also possible to set up geofences with automatic notifications in the event of these being breached. Indeed, whether it’s emissions levels, driver hours, or maintenance schedules, everything falls easily to view, with no downtime for

installation and one login. In addition, in the event of an error code or breakdown, mobile engineers can log into the back end of a machine’s systems, potentially making machines operational much quicker and reducing downtime. The beauty of the ABAX proposition is that it is a brand neutral solution using technology that is already installed and ready for use. The service is available on any

machine from ABAX-enabled or ABAXintegrated brands (which are listed on the company’s website). As a result, users can obtain Application Programming Interface (API) details from a dealer and connect immediately, with the data then fed to Smart Connect. With older machines ABAX will supply a device that is self-installed on the machine. It has a long-lasting battery, and is GPS agnostic, which has the added benefit of

032_CPN_MARAPR22_Layout 1 28/03/2022 18:25 Page 33

compatibility with any mobile network. John Deere, Hitachi Construction Machinery Europe, Bell Equipment, Caterpillar, JCB, and Wirtgen are just some of the big names that are ABAX enabled, with Volvo the most recent to join.

Carbon count At the same time, with the likes of emissions data, and the incidents of machine idling available, Smart Connect is a useful carbon footprint tracking tool. In the UK, where larger organisations are subject to environmental compliance regulations, it is then possible to provide detailed evidence on sustainability performance in the form of an ABAX Environmental Report. Armed with a greater awareness of CO2 output, organisations are then well-placed to address the issue and communicate their endeavours to an increasingly sustainability conscious client base.

ABOUT ABAX ABAX as a company has been trading in the Nordics since 2009, with a rapidly growing presence in the UK from 2012. The telematics expert works with any business that has valuable assets it wants to track and protect, including contractors and plant hirers. Its technology can track any vehicle – including vans, trucks, cars, bikes, and trailers – recording driving behaviour, location, and routes, which can then be used for MOT and insurance management, streamlining the admin functions of the business. Here again there is a solid environmental argument for utilising the system. In the case of HGVs and LCVs, for example, routes can be optimised, whilst driver behaviour, such as sharp braking and accelerating can be identified, which not only saves on fuel – and flags up potentially unsafe behaviour – but can also reduce overall CO2 output.

Last year the company partnered with Zero Group in order to provide usage-based insurance and drive down the cost of cover. Here, the premium is determined by the distance covered or the amount of time spent in the vehicle, and it is ABAX who provide the vital and highly accurate supporting data. It’s a solution that works very well for seasonal businesses where vehicle usage might vary over the course of the year. Secondary theft protection can also be achieved through GPS or Bluetooth (MINI2) devices, depending on the size of the asset in question.
