THE CURRENT CLIMATE
T
he construction industry, in common with every other sector of the economy, is currently grappling with how it can achieve the reductions in greenhouse gas emissions demanded of international climate change objectives. What is becoming Lee Jones, clear is that no one Editor technology currently holds sway – or will do for the foreseeable future. Hydro-treated vegetable oil is gaining converts as a low carbon solution but is regarded even by its own champions as largely an interim measure. Hydrogen, in the form of lighting towers, for example, is already with us, with fuel cell technology and hydrogen combustion engines representing a major and ongoing area of research and development. Moreover, battery electric plant is, of course, very much a reality, and looks set to dominate the compact class of machinery in particular. Indeed, regardless of size there are real advances being made wherever you care to look, and what it’s teaching us is that a technology-diverse approach will be the most efficient. Liebherr is making real advances with electric crawler cranes, for instance, either unplugged or with power provided via a cable and, as this issue explores, there is a 22-tonne Volvo Construction Equipment electric excavator currently on trial in Norway. What’s also clear is that the whole lifecycle of the machinery – from manufacture to recycling and everything in between – will need to be considered. Here,Volvo CE is also taking an early lead with a collaboration with SSAB that’s produced a load carrier made from fossil-free steel. At the same time Volvo Autonomous Solutions is pioneering a driverless system that can make major gains in productivity and emissions reductions. The rising cost of fuel, and the end of the red diesel rebate, has added renewed impetus to the debate, and contractors now recognise that making real gains doesn’t require a wholesale transformation of plant fleets. Doing more with less is the essence of sustainability and fleet managers and
owner operators will need to work smarter, choosing the right solution for the application, and keeping a very close eye on how it’s used. At the same time, easy wins can be accrued by addressing operator behaviours, such unnecessary idling, and using rotary telehandlers and other multitasking solutions that can reduce the number of machines needed on site. Designing out the use of powered equipment from the earliest stage of a project is an equally positive move. There is also an unfair perception that the transition to lithium-ion powered plant is inherently detrimental to performance but that’s a view that’s increasingly being challenged, with these cleaner machines actually outperforming their diesel counterparts in many respects. Conversely, the huge strides that engine manufacturers have made with the latest Stage V solutions should be recognised and, whilst its days are clearly numbered, the fuel that has powered the modern world will still be with us for some years to come. The level of demand in the post-covid landscape took the industry by surprise, and supply chains that were already disrupted by the pandemic have been severely strained still further. As a result, obtaining any machine – regardless of the drivetrain it utilises – has been a challenge. In the longer term, however, electric solutions could have the unintended consequence of easing this particular pain point. Fewer components than an internal combustion engine machine unit means fewer parts and suppliers, as well as reduced maintenance costs for the end user. If the construction equipment industry is to make its own vital contribution on our journey to a healthier planet it’s clear that we will need to embrace a whole suite of solutions. It may well be in some unspecified future we’re living in a world dominated by hydrogen fuelled combustion engines but that day may equally never come. What is required in the interim is an open minded productivity-based approach.

In the first quarter of 2022, imports showed an exceptional 54 per cent increase on the previous quarter and matched the “record” quarterly level seen in Q2 last year, since trade has been monitored from 2013. Equipment sales in the UK have remained at very high levels over the same period. The UK
remained a net exporter of construction and earthmoving equipment in Q1 2022, with exports (£893 million) 40 per cent higher than imports (£637 million).

On behalf of the Liebherr Group, the consulting firm Frontier Economics conducted a life cycle analysis of greenhouse gas emissions of typical construction machines equipped with various drive technologies. The experts determined how much CO2 arises from production to operation through to the recycling of the machines. The study found that technological diversity – including battery electric, HVO and hydrogen, for example – so that the most environmentally friendly technology can be used depending on the performance requirements, is the most effective approach.

he last time Construction Plant News featured Chippindale Plant, the Leedsbased plant and hire specialists had just celebrated 70 years in business and opened a new depot in York. Since then, of course, the pandemic challenged many businesses but that hasn’t meant Chippindale has rested on its laurels. This year it has expanded its site accommodation business with the opening of a ‘Super Depot’ at its Leeds Headquarters. The company has invested over £1m into its cabin fleet this year alone, adding over 50 units, with even further investment and expansion planned in the coming months. Chippindale made the decision in early 2020 to expand its site accommodation service across the entire north of the UK after predominantly running its cabin division with great success in the Manchester region. The company’s cabin fleet now totals approximately 550 cabins and five new employees have been taken on at the Leeds Super Depot, with further plans to expand the team as it grows. “Our focus has always been to provide a premium offering for cabins at competitive rates, just as we do with our plant fleet,” explains Nigel Chippindale, Joint Managing Director. “This large investment has allowed us to drastically expand our fleet and ensure we can provide the premium levels of quality that our customers expect. We’re working alongside renowned West Yorkshire cabin manufacturer Thurston Group on premium custom cabin builds for our fleet.”
Chippindale has also made a commitment to focus on sustainability and to minimise damage to the environment by improving the quality of its cabin fleet and by introducing new technologies that reduce costs for its customers while providing a better customer experience. “Our commitment to sustainability will be at the fore as we build on the already high quality of the cabin fleet. We will introduce new technologies and cost-saving measures such as solar panels, modular designs, moveable walls, thermostatic heaters and much more, to reduce levels of maintenance and to continually drive the quality of our fleet forward. We already have HVO and biofuel compliant generators as well as intelligent systems to monitor fuel use and provide easy customer reporting,” says Nigel.

Over the next two issues Construction Plant News will report on the latest innovations from Volvo Days at the manufacturer’s Eskilstuna Customer Centre in Sweden
T
he Volvo Days event begins with what must rank as the best machine show in the industry. ADTs performing acrobatics to the sounds of the Dropkick Murphys was far from the only highlight of the event, however, with new products, technologies and services on offer at every turn. Volvo sold 99,871 machines in 2021 and increased the services side of its business by 20 per cent year-on-year, and it’s not just about yellow steel.Volvo Construction Equipment is positioning itself as a full-service provider, with its machines just a part of a much wider proposition that encompasses connectivity and digitalisation. The ambition is to identify and address its customers pain points and ease them with a range of solutions – lowering costs and increasing competitiveness in the process.
HAPPYDAYS Contractors and hirers are themselves asking how they can run a more sustainable, and efficient operation – with greater utilisation of equipment – whilst also prioritising safety. The response from Volvo is the likes of the Assist family – including Load Assist and Dig Assist. Fleet solutions such as Active Care are available whilst there is whole suite of site-based initiatives, including the new Connected Map.
With increased electrification, autonomous technology and digitalisation this holistic approach to machine and site management will become more and more evident. The Volvo CO2 programme, for example, is working with customers to drive down carbon footprints with conventional internal combustion engine machines without waiting for electric models. This is a structured approach with an on-site analysis of existing processes and procedures, the identification of improvement opportunities, and plan to implement them.
Electric solutions Volvo launched its L25 Electric wheel loader at Bauma in 2019. Since then it’s much clearer that compact equipment is destined to be electric, but the Swedish manufacturer firmly believes that the crucially important 20tonne+ segment does not represent a ceiling for battery powered machinery – either now or in the future. It already has its 22tonne EC230E Electric operating in Norway as part of a pilot project, for instance, with further markets planned for 2023. Indeed, it is the case that we as an industry have consistently

underestimated the rate at which battery tech has gone down in price and the capacity of the technology to increase in range and power. Volvo will not launch electric machines unless they are as least as productive as their diesel counterparts and, in many respects, these cleaner solutions are already outperforming what has come before. The promise of faster response times – with full torque from a standing start – better handling characteristics and no in-cab noise is, for instance, already winning converts amongst operators. The big question, of course, is around charging times and hours of usage. It is in this respect that greater attention to planning the site, the available charging infrastructure, and the way the machines themselves are being used will need to be made. As an example,Volvo CE has developed a mobile charging container, the Powerbank 05 to support its customers in getting the most from its electric machines. The level of demand post-covid took many by surprise. Add to that supply chain issues and trading conditions are still highly challenging for manufacturers. At the same time there is a much more far-reaching and
fundamental transformation going on in the construction plant sector. “In the coming five years we will see more things happening in our industry than in the previous 50,” declares Head of Volvo CE, Melker Jernberg. “The construction machinery sector is a conservative business but the pace of change is prodigious and it is happening in sustainability, new technologies, services, and partnership with customers as a business driver.”
Net zero timetable Volvo has set itself the goal of being net zero in its whole value chain by 2040, and that’s an ambitious timeframe. What it does represent is a massive opportunity, especially with more and more organisations adopting their own science-based targets. If these are to be achieved they will need OEMs to be at the top of their game. That means not just electric but hydrogen fuel cell development, Hydrogen as a fuel for internal combustion engines and alternative fuels, such as HVO. At the same time there are still real gains to be made in areas such as more efficient hydraulic systems, which is an equally active area of research.
The Eskilstuna site features a 66,000 sq m testing facility, including a dedicated space for the electric and autonomous TARA system, the product of a new organisation
within the group – Volvo Autonomous Solutions. Monitored by a control centre on site, which is equipped with the latest 5G communication, it is the perfect playground for a solution that includes the battery electric TA15. The 15-tonne hauling capacity unit is navigated by a mix of GPS and LIDAR and forms part of a chain of machines which are being run in a realistic quarry production set-up, including loading, dumping, a charging station, as well as different hauling routes and inclinations, with one operator able to command multiple machines from his remote location. The goal is, of course, to improve productivity, as well as reduce CO2 emissions and improve site safety, and the TARS concept is also busy at work at a live limestone quarry in Switzerland in a field trial that will assess those parameters. TARA is presently configured for short hauling cycles, but there is also a pilot project being undertaken in Norway for longer haul applications. In every case the concept is currently being tested in confined sites without human interaction on the ground, but there are also plans to develop operations with a mix of autonomous and conventional machinery. In the next issue we’ll explore the new Volvo equipment in more detail.

FOX GROUP ON A CHARGE Family-owned Fox Group is championing the transition from diesel to battery electric heavy trucks, with the introduction of two new Volvo FE Electric tippers into its fleet – the first of their kind to be delivered anywhere in the UK. hen it comes to mini excavators the eagle has well and truly landed, with an all-new line-up, complete with two batteryelectric models, and a premium level of standard features and options. Coming soon after the introduction of the new CASE Construction Equipment E-Series offering, it represents a particularly active period of product development for a company that is celebrating its remarkable 180th anniversary in 2022. There are, in fact, 20 machines in the D-Series Mini-Excavator line-up ranging from 1 – 6 tonnes, signalling a clear commitment to a sector that represents nearly half of all European machine sales. The smaller of the two new electric machines in the CASE Construction Equipment line-up – the 1.3 tonne CX15EV –
Construction Plant News investigates some of the highlights in the extensive CASE D-Series mini excavator range. is based on the manufacturer’s existing CX12 internal combustion engine sibling. An 8-hour run time on a full charge is complemented by an ‘overnight’ charging time of 10 hours via a standard 220V cable. With the external fast charger, however, that can be reduced to under 2 hours. Power is derived from a 16kW electric engine with a 21.5kWh battery. The longevity of those lithium-ion batteries is calculated in recharging cycles – a figure which is around 3,000 – meaning they will typically enjoy at least a 10-year lifespan.
High performance The benefits of electric in terms of zero emissions and noise are well documented, but what is often overlooked is the power that electric compact equipment can provide the end user. The aforementioned diesel CX12 has 8kW of power at its disposal, for instance, whilst its electric counterpart will boast 16kW, with the added benefit of maximum torque from the moment you activate the machine. Add to that a solution that’s perfectly suited to working indoors, on night shifts, or in any

environment where exhaust fumes and the sound of an engine would be an issue, and you have a very versatile on site tool. Another oft neglected consideration is radically reduced levels of maintenance, as well as on-going after-market expenditure in the likes of filters and lubricants. The CX15EV is also a highly technological design with electro-hydraulic proportional control, which means that flow rates and speeds – including everything from slewing to travel – can be controlled from the in-cab display, depending on application. There are also three pre-set modes: Precision for levelling and grading, Normal for general use, and a further Productivity setting. A characteristic of the D-Series range is that there’s a multiplicity of options and features in each segment, with a zero-tail swing machine available at every weight class, and retractable tracks up to the 2.2 tonne. The latter providing a minimum width of 790mm and allowing access through a standard doorway. All models from 1.7 tonne come with either cab or canopy, which is a unique

offering – as is the option of a two-piece boom on four models within the 2.0 – 6.0 tonne range. A combination of an up to 30 per cent higher operating range, 10 per cent longer reach, and the ability to dig below the machine – as well as closer to it – makes the two-piece an increasingly attractive design, especially in confined spaces. Additional high-tech features found in all models are the electro-hydraulic controls, hydraulic settings, a load-sensing electronic pump and flow-sharing control valves. In terms of sales, the 1.5 – 2.5 tonne sector is the most important in Europe and there are four units available across this weight range – the CX17, CX18, CX19 and CX20 – with the breadth of choice again reflecting the diversity the market demands. The CX17 is seen as a rental solution, for instance, whilst the CX19 is a higher spec unit targeting owner/operators. All of the machines in the D-Series range have a tiltable canopy or cab, which can be operated by one person, and facilitates easier access. Moreover, models from the CX35 and CX37 and below feature engine
power which is under 19kW, eliminating the need for a DPF or AdBlue, whilst the CX42 and upwards will make use of a diesel particulate filter. Amongst the larger machines the functionality increases. The CX60 is twospeed but is additionally equipped with automatic shift up and shift down which senses when more or less traction is required. The flow on the three independent auxillary circuits can be customised via the digital display in the cab, with adjustments made according to the attachment, with the tools available including buckets, breakers, mulchers and more. From that same consol the driver can also force the regeneration of the DPF. The same cab is evident on all machines from the 3.7tonne CX37 and onwards, while further creature comforts and assistance systems for the driver include automatic air conditioning and heating, and a
rear camera as standard on the CX60 and CX65 – and as an option on the CX42, CX50 and CX55. Additional optional features include working lights and optional DAB Radio, Bluetooth, USB, suspended joysticks and a seat with pneumatic suspension and heating.
Service solutions The range of complementary CASE Service Solutions includes the SiteWatch fleet management tool, which allows fleet managers and owners to track fuel consumption, utilisation rate, machine hours and idle time, with data easily accessed via an online portal. SiteConnect enhances telemetry data used by CASE’s Uptime Centre team to provide dealers with alerts based on machine performance. Fast corrective action to minimise downtime is possible, as dealers can remotely access machine data and take corrective action. This enables dealers to be proactive in managing customers’ machines and boosting uptime. Both SiteWatch and SiteConnect are available on the new D-Series MiniExcavator range from 2023.

This month, we focus on the smaller classes of machinery that will feature at the October 2022 trade fair in Munich. ne of the star turns on the Mecalac stand – quite literally as it happens – will be the Revotruck. Operators of this site dumper can rotate the entire cab at the touch of a button to keep their vision and focus on the job and a view of potential obstacles. In addition, the exclusive chassis with central oscillation ensures stability and traction in all conditions.

Almost one third of transport accidents on construction sites occur on dumpers. This is mainly due to the front load obstructing visibility when driving forward. Alternative products, such as reversible dumpers have attempted to solve this problem for a long time by proposing rotating driving platforms, but these are not without their problems.
The "Meet the Future", motto that Wacker Neuson’s sister brand, Kramer is carrying at Bauma also reflects a preoccupation with electrification – as well as digitalisation. There will be developments in the Smart Attach fully hydraulic quick hitch system. The future successor to the first 5055e allwheel steered electric wheel loader will be on show and there will be an electric telehandler on the stand.
Turning the heavy console can be difficult and time consuming. With a rotating console but a fixed cab, all cab elements (mirrors, doors, windscreen) are never at the right position when the platform is rotated. Moreover, access is only possible from one side of the machine and once the platform is facing forward. Getting the best view without the operator physically having to manoeuvre is now possible with the fully rotating cab of the Revotruck. Unlike existing solutions that offer limited two-way views, the infinite cab positions of this Mecalac solution open up visibility in all directions, allowing maximum awareness of the surroundings, including both workers and machines. Because the revolution of the cab is possible at the touch of a button, drivers maintain the correct body posture and help protect themselves against back problems. Additionally, the machine automatically adapts its behavior, including driving direction, speed and steering, to the actual position of the cab. What is described as exceptional stability is achieved through a central linkage between the two parts of the chassis, which offers up 18° of oscillation, ensuring permanent stability and traction in all conditions. The chassis is completed by four equally sized wheels with a switchable steering mode (front steering, all-wheel steering and crab steering) that makes the machine particularly agile in tight spaces.

The expansion of the zero emission portfolio will take centre stage for Wacker Neuson, including the first reversible battery-powered plate – the APU3050e – and the electrification of further product groups. Indeed, the switch to e-machines is now easier than ever with battery-powered rammers, plates, and an internal vibrator system for concrete consolidation all available, not to mention a growing range of electric dumpers, wheel loaders and excavators.
The results of an update to the entire Hyundai Construction Equipment mini excavator offering will be on show at Bauma. The manufacturer is launching a comprehensive A Series range of EU Stage V machines with operating weights of 1.7 to 5.5-tonnes. Already having garnered a prestigious Red Dot Design Award for the distinctive ‘Tiger Eye’ design language, there’s also a new colour scheme across the line-up. The machines benefit from a new hydraulic system for all models over 4 tonnes, with load-sensing technology and a variable displacement pump for smoother operation. All models have proportional joystick controls as standard, along with quick-coupler piping and safety valves on boom, arm and dozer blade cylinders, whilst a tilting cab on 3.5-5.5 tonne models delivers improved service access.There’s eight new models in total, joining the recently unveiled HX10A Twin Drive micro excavator and the range-topping HX85A. Zero emission solutions from Wacker Neuson are extremely low noise making them ideal for working in noisesensitive areas – around care facilities, for instance, or on night shifts in an urban site. Without direct exhaust emissions operation in even poorly ventilated surroundings is possible. The machines can be started at the push of a button, are intuitive to operate and powerful. Furthermore, electric motors are low maintenance and extremely efficient, ensuring low operating and energy costs – and offering a wide spectrum of applications.
At the Munich trade fair, visitors can get a first-hand experience as to how easy it is to switch to e-machines. The popular Ewheel loader WL20e is presented at Bauma in the third generation with a powerful lithium-ion rechargeable battery and customers will shortly be able to choose from among three battery versions. The aforementioned APU3050e is the first battery-powered, reversible vibratory plate with direct drive, with an operating width of 50cm and a centrifugal force of 30kN. Thanks to the lowest design height of any reversible vibratory plate, it is particularly suited to narrow trenches.

ver the past few years, British industry has been battling supply chain issues. The problem has been compounded by a series of factors; Covid 19 closed factories and borders which stalled production and cross-border trade; adapting to Brexit created additional admin, uncertainty and delays; the knock-on effect caused lorry driver shortages; and now, war in Ukraine has spiked a surge in oil prices. Each factor, having occurred in quick succession over the past few years, has combined to create a backlog in production and deliveries. The demand has increased, the supply has decreased, and so the costs have escalated. It now costs more and takes longer to bring products and components into the UK, the effects of which are now burdening every UK industry, business, and household.
Industry workhorse One solution to this comes in the simple form of road trailers, the workhorse of British commerce. The UK recently relaxed its laws on who could tow a road trailer with a gross weight of 3.5 tonnes. These trailers are typically utilised by a range of industry professionals, from construction and groundworks, to farming and horticulture. Older generations had grandfather rights to tow such trailers on their existing licence, but the younger generations had to take a separate test.

HM-D Trailers is helping businesses get back on the road. Given that test centres were at capacity during covid, trying to get as many lorry drivers through their tests as possible, the government decided to return legislation back to that of previous generations, and allow people to once again tow these types of trailers on their existing licence. The trailer manufacturers simply could not get hold of the right materials at the right price or within the right time frame. machinery. Making these units readily available will help to reduce the bottle-neck a number of UK businesses are facing. All models have a full set of lights connected via a 13 pin plug, and are braked. The trailers are very lightweight, but can carry heavy payloads, giving them an impressive strength to weight ratio. The units come with a spare wheel and wheel holder as standard. The mini excavator market is already well placed to embrace the technology and, with the likes of low emission zones proliferating, it represents a fertile growth market. The ZX55U-6EB might be the first of its kind from Hitachi, but the manufacturer is promising to expand its battery-powered products line-up in Europe in the future. “Hitachi is delighted to offer our customers a new batterypowered model capable of working productively and efficiently in small spaces,” enthuses HCME President, Takaharu Ikeda. “We are working hard to meet the growing demand for zeroemission equipment and listening carefully to our customers’ requirements for improved safety, increased productivity and reduced life-cycle costs.”

A ‘SITE’ BETTER OFF It’s not just in alternative powertrains that Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) is on the charge because it’s also making progress in the productivity gains associated with remote monitoring. MIGHT Y MINI Doosan introduces its next generation miniexcavator range
T
he highest power and torque in their respective classes and the versatility to cover a wide range of applications. That’s what Doosan is promising for the four new machines added to its next generation mini-excavator range. Not only that but compatiblity with confined sites has been given careful thought. Of the DX27Z-7 2.8 tonne, DX35Z-7 3.9 tonne, DX50Z-7 5.4 tonne and DX55R-7 5.7 tonne Stage V compliant models, the first three feature a zero tail swing, whilst the DX50Z-7 benefits from a reduced radius design. In addition, a platform design that features new upper structures has increased durability and robustness, which is complemented in all four new miniexcavators by a larger working range than other equivalent machines, coupled with higher lifting capacities and digging forces. The DX27Z-7 and DX35Z-7 are powered by the Doosan D17 Stage V compliant diesel engine providing 18.4 kW (24.7 HP) of power at 2,400 and 2,200 rpm, respectively. The DX50Z-7 and DX55R-7 are powered by the Doosan D18 Stage V compliant diesel engine providing 36.4 kW (48.8 HP) of power at 2,200 rpm. The DX27Z-7 and DX35Z-7 offer high hydraulic flows of 58 and 74 l/min. The DX50Z-7 and DX55R-7 also offer a high hydraulic flow of 80 l/min and, like the two smaller machines, this enhances work with attachments. A new EPPR valve is incorporated for two-way and optional rotating functions, that provides the operator with 10-step proportional
control of the hydraulic flow rate via the thumbwheel joystick. In all of these next generation miniexcavators, newly designed cast counterweights ensure what is described as excellent machine balance and stability when working. In the DX27Z-7 and DX35Z-7, long arm options are available for both models with 60 and 100kg additional counterweights included, respectively. An additional 200kg bolt-mounted counterweight option is available for the DX55R-7. A larger, roomier cab maximises visibility with a full glass entry door. High luminance LED work lamps, with additional LED lamps available as an option, also improve the view of the work area. Other features include an enhanced heating/HVAC system (with AC optional in the DX27Z-7 and DX35Z-7), DAB Audio, 8in. Touch Screen for the DX50Z-7/DX55R-7, and a 5.7in. screen in the DX27Z-7 and DX35Z-7.
Connected technology The HVAC system and the DAB Audio can be controlled through the 8in. touch screen and the feed from the optional rear-view camera can be displayed on both the 5.7 and 8in. screens. The monitors also show the flow rate setting, which can be controlled in 10 steps with the thumbwheel joystick. The new mini-excavators incorporate a new dozer blade providing both a higher dozer lifting height and dozer digging depth. The machines also have a new dozer blade control lever. Visibility and workability are improved by increasing the bucket protrusion distance beyond the tracks. Placing the boom swing cylinder on the left-hand side of the cab allows the operator to work right up against walls and other structures on the right hand side of the machines. The fuel tank and boom swing cylinder have been positioned at the base of the cab, with the MCV now on the right side of the machine, improving visibility for maintaining and working on the MCV.

asy to use and transport between two worksites – the Manitou Group ULM is the manufacturer’s most compact telehandler solution to date, and its versatility will see it effortlessly slot into service in a number of different sectors. In particular, Manitou Group has designed a machine that will meet the needs of users who want a multi-tasking unit that’s straightforward to use and move between worksites. Within the Ultra Light Manitou (ULM) family there are two models available – the ULM 412 H with a lifting capacity of 1,250kg and the ULM 415 H with a lifting capacity of 1,500kg, both with a lift height of 4.30m. The ULM 412 H offers a transportable weight at 2,500kg whilst the 415H has a weight of 2,700kg (depending on the configuration). Both are transportable by a trailer with a PTAC of 3,500kg.

Driver experience Inside, the operator has an unobstructed 360° view. Camille Rouvrais, product manager, explains more: “We replaced the roof grille with a transparent, shock-resistant polycarbonate window, which complies perfectly with the requirements of the FOPS standard”. The visibility improvements also apply to the operator’s lateral view. The side view is clear as the hydraulic hoses are inside the boom and the engine cover at a lower position to the right of the operator. The dashboard screen used for driver assistance displays information as pop-ups. Two vents are placed on the windscreen for demisting, and the famous Manitou JSM joystick is placed on a floating armrest as standard for greater usability. An automatic parking brake and three steering modes – two-wheel steer for high-speed travel, fourwheel steer for navigating confined places, and crab mode for lateral manoeuvres – have been incorporated for improved driving comfort.

Manoeuvrability The ULM is distinctive for its small height, but with a ground clearance as high as 29cm, enabling it to move across difficult terrain without any problems. Equipped with a 35hp engine, the ultra-compact telehandler offers a maximum hydraulic flow of 48 lit/min. The machine is equipped with a flow sharing distributor, enabling several hydraulic movements to be carried out at the same time. The lightweight design has been kept in mind throughout the development process. By dispensing with the compensating cylinder and replacing the hydraulic compensator with an electronic compensator, for example, less hydraulic oil is needed and the machine's weight is decreased. Removing the compensating cylinder also narrows the truck, making it simpler to drive in confined spaces, such as when loading straw bales, entering farm buildings, or managing pallets of bricks or blocks on tight construction sites.
Attachments designed for you A range of attachments has been specially designed for this model allowing it to be used for even more applications. From forks to
carriages, hedge cutters, pot clamps, branch cutters, big bag handlers and snow blades – the possibilities are endless. The new model's total cost of ownership (TCO) is decreased by a number of cuttingedge features. The Stop & Start option guarantees a reduction in the machine's total cost of ownership, of about £10 per hour of idle through decreased machine depreciation, fuel consumption, and preventative maintenance. On the FACTORY FLOOR Construction Plant News goes inside the Pontchateau plant, home of Bobcat Telehandlers Up to 17 machines per day
T
elehandlers have been part of the DNA of the Pontchateau site in LoireAtlantique in France for more than half a century. Before the year 2000, the factory used to manufacture the Sambron range of products but, after a succession of changes in ownership, it is Bobcat telehandlers that now come off the production line. All Bobcat rigid telehandlers for the world market are manufactured here, including 29 models split between ranges for the construction and agricultural markets. The factory was originally built on an 82,000 m2 plot of land and was extended in 2019 to meet higher demand. “In 2016, as our logistics capacity reached saturation and demand grew, Bobcat defined a 3-year expansion plan for the facility, representing 4 million euros of investment,” explains Jerome Miermont, Site Director for the Pontchateau facility. Completed in 2019, with the addition of 13,000 m2 of extra space and a new 1,500 m2 plus logistics building, these developments have made it possible to meet the effects of substantial growth in the brand’s activity (+75 per cent between 2017 and 2022). This was also accompanied by a re-organisation of the manufacturing process. For the telehandlers, the journey always starts in the design office. This office has a team of 40 employees

operating from Pontchateau, together with another team based in the Czech Republic, at the Doosan Bobcat European headquarters. On the production line, the machines start to take shape during the mechanical welding operations, which are strategically organised in two lines: one for the boom, and the other for the frame. After the steel parts have been laser cut, they are bent into the right shape – for example, to form the two half-sections of the boom in U form, after which the next step is welding. “To optimise production, we have equipped ourselves with two larger robots, each of which welds all the frames, saving 30 per cent in time. The last robot, representing an investment of €850,000, arrived last September,” Jerome Miermont explains. The various parts of the telehandlers are then sent to the blast chamber for shot blasting, before being painted. The staff carry out a detailed technical procedure (priming, fading time, lacquer application and oven drying) to ensure a high-quality finish.
The assembly line is organised around 58 stations. To save time and space, a team in the kitting workshop has prepared the necessary components for each station in advance. On the sub-assembly line, various machine components (the engine nacelle, the cab etc.) are assembled to gradually build the machine on the main line, which alone comprises 17 different stations. Even before the tyres are fitted, the carriage is filled with oil and programmed. This is followed by the fitting of the mudguards, a performance test and the installation of the tyres. The final assembly station is reserved for the installation of the hood and the stickers, then the machine goes through a test phase (static and dynamic) for four hours. Up to 17 machines can be assembled daily. “Last year we produced 2,658 machines. This is a record number, well above the planned target of 2,455 units,” Jerome Miermont adds. But with an estimated annual production capacity of 3,500 machines in 2022, there is still space for growth. The Pontchateau plant intends to double its activity by 2025.

ROTATING TELEHANDLER The biggest order so far has been placed for the new JCB rotating telehandlers. Supplied by dealer Greenshields JCB, Charles Wilson Engineers (CW Plant) has ordered 25 machines, including the 21-metre 555-210R machine and 26-metre 555-260R, in a deal worth more than £5 million. Par ty ! like it’s 2030 There are still some obvious cons to driving an allelectric van but, thanks to Ford, these could soon be outnumbered by the Pros!
I
t’s not like the mighty Ford to ever be late to the party, so eyebrows were certainly raised when they didn’t immediately jump on the electric van bandwagon like so many of their commercial vehicle competitors. As a serial ‘A’ lister, with ownership of Britain’s perennial best-selling van – the Transit – you get the distinct impression that for them it was more a case of the old saying: “marry in haste, repent at leisure.” And, of course, now the music has
stopped, they have dramatically appeared centre stage with what looks very much like a double act which could top the bill for the foreseeable future. The launch of any new Transit, and there have been eight upgrades during its almost sixty years of unrivalled success, is always a headline grabber, of course, but few have been as eagerly anticipated as the E version. One would imagine that – given what is at stake for the company globally – the vehicle has been tested and trialled more rigorously than any of its previous incarnations and feedback from businesses across the spectrum has played a key role in delivering a vehicle which will set the benchmark towards complete electrification of the Ford commercial offering within the next decade. We all know, that right now, the diesel version, in terms of price and range, still makes most sense for many but there will come a time when the talking has to stop and the combustion engine will, well, selfcombust! By then of course, the market will have evolved significantly but right now, pound for pound, the E-Transit looks like being a real game changer in terms of appeal to the masses.

VEHICLES For one thing it is aggressively – and many would say much more realistically – priced with basic models starting at around £47,000 plus VAT. That’s still a considerable investment but one which should very quickly start paying dividends in terms of lower running and overall maintenance costs, which are predicted to be 40 per cent lower than equivalent diesel-powered models. A 68kWh battery will do around 197 miles and rapid charging can be completed to 80 per cent capacity in just over 30 minutes. Unfortunately, even Ford can’t hide the fact that fully laden in winter with the heater on full blast this will be reduced quite significantly. However, unlike many other electric vehicle manufacturers, they are being up front about this and pretty much guarantee a range north of 100 miles whatever the conditions.
Extensive range Currently there are 25 models of the E version on offer with multiple lengths and heights, as well as gross vehicle weights from 3.5 to 4.25 tonnes and payloads up to 1,758kg to choose from. Rear wheel configured, there are also three driving modes to select – normal, eco and slippery – and the regenerative braking system is graduated – unlike some vehicles which almost slow to a stop the moment the foot is removed from the accelerator. The ride experience is also enhanced thanks to a cleverly re-engineered suspension system to accommodate the drive motor. One convenient innovation for site workers is the three strategically placed 2.3kW sockets in the cab and cargo area which can be used to power work tools and lighting. Most, importantly, extended use will
In keeping with the party atmosphere, amidst a wall of dry ice, Ford took the opportunity to give the assembled press a sneak preview of what’s up next – the biggest selling Transit Custom as a fully electric vehicle. By the end of 2024 Ford will have five pure electric vans within its stable. not drain the battery significantly, an hour’s work using only about three miles of mileage. And rather than a site supervisor ordering a downing of tools, the van itself will flash its lights and honk its horn to make sure there is enough juice to get home. Behind the wheel, one of the most surprising aspects of the base 180 hp 450Nm engine is just how much power it can generate, considerably more than any diesel transit available, making it extremely quick off the mark and, of course, noticeably quieter. There’s an impressive 12in. touch screen lifted from the electric Mustang which runs a fully integrated Sync 4 multimedia system as standard, as well as heated folding mirrors, quick clear windscreen, cruise control plus a host of the very latest driver assistance aids which have rightly earned the Transit the reputation as one of the best appointed and safest LCV’s around.
Top marks all round then for the new van, but crucially Ford has also correctly identified that one of the biggest obstacles to going fully electric in the minds of many potential owners is the sheer hassle and anxiety surrounding the actual charging process. We often hear about vehicles being returned to a depot for overnight charging but what about the oneman van owner? The Transit clearly wouldn’t be the iconic preserve of white van man without the army of builders, plumbers, and electricians who after a hard day’s graft park up at home overnight. For these guys and girls Ford, in partnership with British Gas/Centrica, will now install a rapid charging connective wall-box at home and any oversight with regards to plugging in will be met with low charge sound alerts, avoiding the unwelcome possibility of ending up stranded on the hard shoulder before the day’s work has even begun. And in the event of that highly unlikely scenario, there is a one-year electric roadside assistance package including rescue charging.
The PRO choice It’s all part of the Ford PRO concept which you can sign up for whether you are a oneman owner, a fleet operator, or, indeed, even if you don’t actually own a Ford vehicle at all. It’s a dedicated service covering sales, conversions, financing, servicing, smart charging, and software all under one central umbrella. As Ford Pro CEO, Ted Cannis explains: “The biggest bugbear of any small business is paperwork and the ambition of Ford PRO is taking away the hassle of admin with automatic billing for charging, mileage reports, servicing reminders and so on.” Let the roofers fix the roof the plumbers do the plumbing, he enthuses……. A sentiment which will certainly strike a chord with all parties concerned!
