hroughout the supply chain we are now seeing unprecedented pressures on building material availability with project disruption and inevitable cost increases as a consequence. The plant sector in by no means immune to these issues, of Lee Jones, course, and it also serves to Editor shine a spotlight on some endemic issues in the industry. Advances in construction plant, particularly in relation to emissions and machine control, has made machinery cleaner and more sophisticated than it has ever been, but saving the planet comes at price, and the lament for the plant hire industry is that rates have for some time failed to reflect that reality. Indeed, with more electric, hybrid and autonomous solutions our inevitable destiny – and until these technologies can be delivered at a value more comparable to their traditional counterparts – the cost of capital investment is likely to increase still further. If any other sector were to experience the increases associated with Stage V and alternative powertrains then the economic reflex action would be to protect margins and pass any projected rises onto its customer base, but for plant hire firms this is equally problematic. Sustainable they may well be but some of these new and expensive systems have little additional value in productivity to many operators on site, for instance. Add to that the removal of red diesel subsidies in 2022 and it is clear that the plant sector as a whole needs to look long and hard at its business model. It is a conundrum that the rental industry is, of course, well accustomed. Residual values and reliability are, more than ever, the guiding principles on which fleet renewal strategies are formed, but the length of time that a return on investment can be realised is receding still further into the horizon. Moreover, in accurately judging
what a market in the months ahead is likely to be asking of its suppliers, longer lead times complicate the proposition to an even greater extent. At some stage a cycle of increased cost on the one side and stagnant hire rate inflation will become unsustainable. Where contractors have come to expect a particular amount for a specific machine, it may well be time to factor in not just the initial outlay on the part of the owner but the infrastructure required to keep more advanced systems in operation. If they are to provide the highest level of service staff need to be intimately acquainted with a diverse range of equipment, and its capabilities, which requires a significant investment in training and qualifications, not to mention offering the financial incentives that will attract the right candidates in the first place. End users should welcome a supplier whose employees are well versed in the capabilities of modern construction plant and can pass on that knowledge from the hire desk and, more importantly, be willing to pay for it. For hirers themselves the promise of digitalised processes in increasing productivity are now a necessity. On the manufacturer side a recurring theme of any new machine launch is a focus on total cost of ownership, whether that’s through a commonality of parts across a fleet, or any reduction in complexity that can be accrued in the engineering. Clearly we are experiencing a transitional phase, where even the cleanest diesel engines will eventually make way for other solutions with the promise of reduced running costs. In the meantime, it may well be time to accept that the most advanced and environmentally friendly plant and equipment comes with a price tag and their needs to be a fairer way to share the cost amongst all the interested parties.

YOU’RE HIRED! THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT SECTOR IS BOUNCING BACK FROM LOCKDOWN AND IS LOOKING TO RECRUIT Construction has recovered quicker than expected from the Covid-19 pandemic and the industry will reach 2019 levels of output in 2022. By 2025, the industry will need to recruit an additional 217,000 new workers just to meet demand. That’s the forecast of the Construction Skills Network (CSN) 2021-25, published by CITB. According to the CSN, most English regions will experience an increase in construction workers by 2025, with East Midlands (1.7 per cent) and West Midlands (1.4 per cent) forecast to lead demand. Scotland (1.4 per cent) and Wales (0.7 per cent) are also predicted to fare well.
Major projects such as HS2 are driving growth in some regions and infrastructure (5.2 per annum) and private housing (6.7 per cent) should see the healthiest pace of expansion by 2025. The report predicts a growing contribution to come from repair, maintenance and improvement works, as retrofitting existing buildings to meet net zero emissions targets becomes more important.

They’re low noise, and benefit from a 280kg basket capacity, which is the biggest on the market for a machine with

the basket attachments specially adapted for set work. In addition, we encourage our clients to allow us to conduct site visits so we can satisfy ourselves that they have the right machines for the location and shoot.” Current projects include the latest Captain Marvel production at Pinewood, where over 30 Media Access Solutions machines will be in operation for up to six months, whilst location shoots are typically of a much shorter duration, but in every instance Tim and his team are often required to move quickly. “When big budgets and tight deadlines are at play you need to be able to deliver yesterday and I’ve had producers phoning me in the early hours of the morning desperate for a platform,” he admits. “There are so many variables involved in being able to keep a film schedule on track, from the weather to the availability of the cast, and it’s an industry that often operates at very short notice – and that’s a reality that has been exacerbated by the restrictions associated with the Covid-19 landscape. Not only that, but they need the equipment to be reliable and that’s why we only offer the most advanced solutions.”
When it comes to the business of showbusiness only the best machines will make the cut and that’s why Media Access Solutions can deploy some heavyweight performers, like its two 56m Bronto Skylift S 50 XDTJ 50 boom lifts, which are supplied on an operated plant basis. Moreover, there’s a wide range of JLG and Genie telescopic and articulating booms, with solutions up to a height of 135ft available, as well as extensive portfolio of spider lifts. When you’re working on a city centre location like that even the basics of plant hire – such as pick up and delivery – have to be performed with precision, because any potential delays can be very costly. “Some of the largest film franchises on the planet are now produced on these shores, and in many ways the UK is the new Hollywood, with crews that are the envy of the world. That needs to be reflected in the supply of machinery and, as preferred suppliers of Netflix, Disney and Warner Bros, the levels of service, safety and reliability we provide contributes to a real UK success story.”

IN ‘HIRE’ DEMAND Finding tools, plant and equipment at an affordable rate is set to get easier with Trade Plant Hire. Construction Plant News Editor, Lee Jones reports on how technology could streamline the rental experience for both tradespeople and stockists.
‘‘E
ven a cursory examination of the rental industry will reveal that it is a highly fragmented market,” explains Ivan Yardley, managing director of Trade Plant Hire. “Not only will different hirers only supply certain classes of equipment – which can equally be limited to specific sectors – but the level of visibility of the product portfolio through digital tools is invariably quite patchy. For a time-poor tradesperson, finding the right tool for the job for exactly when they need it – and, more importantly, at the best available price – is not a straightforward proposition, and that’s where Trade Plant Hire comes in.”
Digital Tool Trade Plant Hire is effectively a website but, from the point of view of an end user armed with a smart phone, it behaves just like an app. From an icon on the home screen tradespeople can access an advanced interface where they can search for kit by entering a specific product, the postcode of a job site, as well as the duration of the hire. The app will then generate a list of options based on location and the dates required, including description, price,VAT breakdown, deposit, and insurance. It will then list items that are available from stockists who will deliver to that area within the required timeframe, with the default factor based on price. The functionality doesn’t end there, however, because, using the well-known and secure Stripe service as a gateway, it’s also possible to make deposits and payments through the app. Multiple

transactions can be made, with delivery on different dates and to specified addresses. Crucially for the plant or tool hirer, the builder is required to accept the rental provider’s terms and conditions prior to the final processing of the sale, which eliminates the need for the stockist to change their established processes in any way. Once checkout is completed a VAT receipt and order notification is emailed to the builder.
Fairer Market In addition to facilitating the sourcing of equipment Trade Plant Hire is designed to benefit both sides of the rental equation. Former England and Lions rugby union international, Tim Stimpson is part of the consortium behind the app, and he explains its guiding principles. “The ambition is to help the smaller players with only one two depots to compete for local custom with the nationals and allow them to demonstrate that they are focused on a quality, customer-centred approach in the process. It’s about creating a fairer market for all parties where the service and equipment that the independent operators provide is more accessible, and the builder can be satisfied that they have got the best deal.” Trade Plant Hire is structured to manage the hire experience from end to end. As an illustration, account holders have the facility to administer active, past, and future orders. Contractors are alerted the day before the end of the hire period by email, for instance, and, in the event they would like to extend, a new invoice is then generated. Orders can be cancelled up to 12 hours before, whilst records of all previous transactions include digital copies of VAT receipts, which are then

At every stage the developers of Trade Plant Hire have thought carefully about how they can promote best practice in the supply chain. “Should there be an issue with what has been delivered to site, it’s possible to report this on the system,” continues Ivan. “If a machine is damaged prior to its arrival, for example, that can be communicated to the stockist through the app, together with evidential imagery. Not only that, at the end of every hire period, a builder is asked to rate the service. Tradespeople set great store in reliability, and we have found that the provider with more positive ratings from previous users is more likely to get the hire, so it becomes a useful tool for a stockist who is championing high levels of service.”
Free Listing Any supplier can create an account and list equipment on the app for free, whilst they can also decide how detailed they want those listings to be. It may be that some hires will only want to upload the everyday and most popular items, whilst others might want their entire catalogue to be accessible, and the Trade Plan Hire team provides full support to rental firms in every instance. Delivery options, such as pick up or collect, can be specified, whilst items can be listed on the basis of day rate, or for a fixed price. As a
result, the stockist can maintain their margins through complete control over the service offered and pricing structure.

CHEPSTOW PLANT INTERNATIONAL AGREES £20M DEAL In what has been described as a ‘transformational’ move, Chepstow Plant International (CPI) has invested in £20million-worth of Volvo CE equipment. The first of over 70 new machines have now started to arrive on-site, including 52 articulated dump trucks, seven excavators and twelve dump trucks, all fitted with the latest Tier V engines. KPH PLANT HIRE UPGRADES KPH Plant Hire has taken delivery of a Volvo FM 8x2 rigid with beavertail body and split hydraulic double flip ramps, which it will use to deliver its extensive fleet of excavators, telehandlers, dumpers and rollers. Supplied by Jason Robinson, Area Sales Manager at Crossroads Truck and Bus, the 6,000mm wheelbase FM is mounted with bodywork by Shawtrack Services which features a full working-at-height system and offers a payload of more than 19 tonnes. TWO MORE VOLVOS FOR TILSLEY “They look great, have plenty of power, are smooth to operate and are good on fuel”, declares Tilsley Plant Hire, Managing Director, Jonathan Tilsley, as he takes delivery of a brand new Volvo ECR18E and ECR25D. Joining an existing ECR58D, the sub 2-tonne weight, of the ECR18E means it can be transported safely, securely and with ease on a small trailer with up to three buckets and a hydraulic breaker. The machine also features what its makers describe as best-in-class servicing access, a highly efficient 16.2hp engine and the ability to retract the undercarriage to less than 1 metre in width.
SPEEDY REACHES FOR SKYJACK
One of the largest independent plant hire firms in the south-west has expanded its extensive excavator fleet by investing in 28 Kubota machines. Tool Care Hire has taken on the K008-3 and KX030-4 models, expanding to more than 75 diggers across its four depots in Exeter, Exmouth, Torbay and Okehampton. The K008-3 is a one tonne mini-excavator for jobs where space is limited, whereas the KX030-4 is a three-tonne unit with the largest cab in its class.
Thanks to a £3m investment, there’s now 100 new Skyjack boom and scissor lifts on the books at Speedy. The articulated and telescopic boom lifts include the diesel-powered all-terrain SJ46AJ and SJ66T, and the all-electric SJ30ARJE, which have working heights of 15.93m, 22.12m & 10.82m, respectively. The rental firm has also taken delivery of more SJ6826 & SJ6832 rough terrain scissor lifts from the same manufacturer, which provide a working height range from 9.75m to 11.58m. DUCHY PLANT HIRE EXPANDS There’s 15 new Doosan excavators now available on Cornwall-based Duchy Plant Hire’s portfolio. The machines, which were supplied by Kellands (Plant Sales), based in Bridgwater in Somerset, the Authorised Doosan Dealer for London and the South of England including the Channel Islands, range from 2.7 to 25.5 tonne. All of the units are available for self-drive rental, with the larger excavators primarily offered as operated plant with highly skilled, fully insured and CPCS trained operators.
Just over forty years since placing its first order with Mastenbroek, White Horse Contractors has once again returned to the manufacturer of self-propelled trenchers. The leading drainage contractor took delivery of a Mastenbroek 20/15 complete with a specialist sports field system. MAGNOR PLANT GOES HYBRID Magnor Plant, the Warwickshire based inhouse plant business of Morgan Sindall Infrastructure has bolstered its hire feet with the initial purchase of fifteen Trime UK hybrid tower lights. The X-ECO Lithium Hybrid LED has a lighting coverage of 3,000sq m and is powered by a combination of a 2-cylinder diesel engine and lithium battery pack. The engine uses just 0.12 litres per hour, which equates to a 92 per cent reduction when compared to a conventional diesel-only lighting tower, whilst there’s also an 86 per cent reduction in airborne carbon emissions. WASTE FIRM INVEST IN HYUNDAI Some of the 60,000 tonnes of general waste that Bristol-based McCarthy Marland handles per year will now be processed by the latest Hyundai excavators. The waste and recycling expert’s fleet already included several HX145LCR’s and a HX220L 20t class excavator, and they are now joined by 8 – 15t units from the same manufacturer. In order to increase their versatility, two machines have been fitted with a fixed leg 5-tine grab from Geith whilst the third HX145 is fitted with a Kinshofer rotating selector grab. JCB continues to charge on with its battery-powered solutions, including a new Loadall option
J
CB has taken a lead in the increasingly rapid move towards an electric future, with the launch of a range of E-Tech models, powered exclusively by batteries. This includes a mini excavator, a Teletruk industrial fork lift, a range of access platforms, a tracked dumpster, site dumper and more recently a Loadall telescopic handler.
Electric Capacity The 525-60E is based on the existing dieselpowered 525-60 Loadall, with the promise of identical lifting capacities and performance, but without a diesel engine under the canopy. The machine has a maximum lift capacity of 2.5-tonnes and a maximum lift height of 6.0m. It offers a 2.0-tonne lift capacity at full height and a 720kg lift capacity at its maximum 3.5m forward reach. In place of the engine is a 24kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This powers a 96V electrical system, that the manufacturer claims will meet the daily needs of around 95 per cent of Loadall customers at this machine size. A motor controller takes the DC charge from the lithium-ion batteries and converts it to alternating current, which is sent to two separate electric motors. There is a 17kW traction motor, that drives through a four-wheel drive dropbox to the drive/steer axles. Though similar to the axles on the diesel model, the electric machine has reduced disc brake capacity, as the electric motor delivers regenerative braking, charging the battery. Having fewer brake discs reduces drag on the motor, saving battery power.

LOAD UP! There is a second 22kW electric motor, for the boom functions, with an 80 litre/min fixed displacement gear pump supplying the hydraulic power. This makes it possible to lift and extend the boom while independently powering the wheels. The drive to the hydraulic pump is only activated when the operator moves a lever for boom functions, reducing the electrical energy required to power the hydraulic system. In addition, the machine regenerates flow as the boom is lowered, reducing the energy required to power the hydraulic system.
The 525-60E has a 3kW on-board charger, capable of fully charging the battery in 8 hours, through a domestic 230/240V electrical supply. This uses a typical blue site connector in the small charging port ahead of the right-hand rear wheel. There is also the option of using the JCB Universal Charger, where three-phase 415V power is available. This can charge the machine in around 90 minutes.

Performance and Productivity As with electric road vehicles, maximum torque is available straight away, which means the compact Loadall reacts instantly to operator inputs. That said, you can smoothly creep forward while placing a load, or when positioning forks under a pallet. There is a foot brake pedal in the cab but lifting off the drive pedal results in regenerative braking, so there is rarely a need to use it. As with the diesel machine, the 525-60E can be operated with pallet forks or a range of attachments. The instant torque delivery makes it easy to dig into a pile of material when equipped with a bucket.
Operator Control The ROPS/FOPS cab is identical to the diesel model, other than some slightly different graphics in the main dash screen, where engine rpm has been replaced by a battery symbol to show remaining charge. The fully glazed cab has a 2.2kW electric heater, along with heated front, side and rear screens for rapid defrosting in the mornings. The operator also gets a heated suspension seat and visibility is very good, as the electric drive has been installed within the existing bodywork. The machine is equipped with JCB’s Adaptive Load Control System with A-pillar mounted screen, for maximum lift safety. Noise levels in the cab are just 66.7dB, while externally the machine creates 92.2dB. A white noise reversing alarm is an option, to warn other site operatives that the machine is in use.
Total Cost of Ownership Much like electric cars, the 525-60E is initially more expensive than the diesel model. But, overall running costs could be considerably lower, depending in part on your source of electricity. Service and maintenance costs will be far lower too, as there is no engine

oil, no fuel or air filters and less use of the service brake, leading to longer life. The batteries are maintenance-free. Perhaps more importantly, there are sites where a lack of engine emissions and to a lesser extent noise, will be very welcome. Contractors working in an underground operation or rail tunnel, will be able to operate without costly exhaust extraction equipment, for instance. There will be plenty of urban sites where the lack of noise and fumes could allow longer working hours too, particularly in residential areas. As with all Loadall telehandlers, the 52560E can be supplied with JCB’s LiveLink telematic system, providing managers with real-time operating information. This includes battery charge levels and charging times, along with location data, service reminders and remote diagnostics capabilities.
Tomorrow’s Machinery Today JCB freely admits that the 525-60E won’t suit every single application. No-one is claiming that electric drive will be the only
solution to the problems of air quality and climate change that are affecting countries across the world. It will play a part in a range of driveline solutions. However, the machine could meet the needs of around 95 per cent of today’s customers and that is more than enough to start a quiet revolution on construction sites and in agricultural yards. It is also worth remembering that this is only JCB’s first electric Loadall, with the engineers and designers able to select the 525-60 as the ideal starting point. This compact Loadall has the widest customer base, covering construction and agriculture and can now be offered with a zero-emission solution to a wide spread of industry sectors. As battery technology develops, there is little doubt that JCB will remain at the forefront of this exciting new industry sector.

Precise Control A newly configured transmission system offers enhanced smoothness in carrying out the trickiest jobs at height with precision. These operations are also facilitated by the combination of the Boom Positioning System, the new updated joystick, the inching function and improved visibility from the cab. An enhanced inching pedal design is easier to use and reduces fatigue. A higher engine brake provides a shorter stop distance and increases safety on construction sites. Turtle/rabbit speeds are standard on all models and operated from the joystick. There is a new DYNAMIC mode for applications requiring rapid
transmission response and the new optional hand throttle with FLEX DRIVE function allows for the control of travel speed independent from engine rpm.
Operator Experience The Bobcat R-Series cab is designed around the operator, offering a central control panel for optimised 360° ergonomics. The new contemporary interior has been designed ergonomically, and all surfaces have been configured to offer increased space and visibility. In addition, a new 5in. LCD display provides interactive and streamlined information, including the easier and more precise operation that the feed from the rear camera facilitates. Maximum Uptime Uptime is key in construction and Bobcat has worked hard on the design to ensure they’re equipped for the tough jobs. There’s protective shielding of all vital components in key areas, and the robust frame and boom makes the units suitable for working in every possible environment. The shielded design also provides protection for hydraulic and electrical components – including the pipes, harness and transmission – and a steel plate guards the base of the machine. Easy Maintenance All R-Series telehandlers now feature a new engine hood with a steeper profile that increases visibility and reduces blind spots by 15 per cent on the right hand side of the machines. Together with the new dashboard design, this provides excellent unobstructed visibility from the cab, allowing the driver to move around the job site with ease and minimises accidents or mistakes. Access to the engine compartment has also been improved, enabling easier maintenance. Under the hood, R-Series telehandlers are powered by new upgraded versions of the Bobcat D34 Stage V engine, utilising DPF after-treatment, which is automatically regenerated with no impact on performance and no disturbance for operators. The lack of AdBlue in the 75 HP engine and the absence of EGR in the 100 HP engine provide further advantages. Overall, the decreased number of intervals from five to three in these Stage V models allows for easier maintenance and a lower total cost of ownership. These machines are also connected via Bobcat’s new Machine IQ telematics system further enhancing the efficiency of the ownership experience. For lesser regulated markets, the proven Perkins Stage IIIA engine provides high power and the simplicity of its mechanical injection system.

Stability and Confidence All areas of the R-Series range are designed to inspire full confidence in customers, beginning with the low centre of gravity and well-balanced design of the machines, which also incorporate a heavy counterweight and a long wheelbase. uilding contractors are demanding ever more compact machines without compromising lift height and capacity. Manitou has responded to this need with its new MT 730 and MT 930 models to provide up to 9m lift height in a machine less than 2m wide and 2m high – small enough to fit through a typical domestic size garage door. The MT 730 H and MT 930 H have a maximum lift capacity of 3 tonnes and can reach 7m and 9m respectively. Enhanced Safety To prevent unintentional machine movement, the standard JSM now detects the operator's hand when performing hydraulic motions. These three telehandlers can be optionally equipped with Manitou’s new Safety Pack to increase safety awareness on busy sites. It warns on-site teams and feeds data back to the fleet manager. Any inappropriate behavior is identified by sensors activating two flashing lights inside and outside the cab, such as movement of the machine with the boom raised, the seat belt not being fastened, temporary activation of movement cut-off, etc. Another optional feature, a reversing aid, alerts the operator if someone is behind the telehandler, giving the operator complete peace of mind while operating. Because there is no step, access to the cab is optimised for risk-free entry and exit. A new boom with internal components offers greater visibility for enhanced safety during loading and unloading. An automatic parking brake with hill-start assist also helps to reduce the risk of accidents.
Low TCOs Manitou Group prioritises lowering total cost of ownership. Users of this new range can now analyse their hydraulic oil to identify when it needs to be changed. Situated under the boom, there are two access points for easily collecting oil samples. A machine can be sitting idle up to 45 per cent of the time, but Manitou Group’s new optional Stop & Start solution automatically cuts out the engine when idling. It can be configured from 1 minute to 30 minutes and restarts the engine when the accelerator pedal is pressed or via movement of the JSM joystick. The fuel savings, wear on components and the noise reductions are significant. Reducing potential idle time has the potential to prolong the requirement for a DPF regeneration, resulting in less down time on site.

t was in 2019 that Jeff Haines realised that a smaller more mobile crusher could be a productive recycling solution for contractors, particularly on more compact sites, and set about designing just such a machine. The result is the CR300 Compact Crusher, a unit that combines dimensions that will fit through a 700mm doorway, and a crushing capacity of up to six tonnes of concrete, brick or roof tile per hour. That power and

portability is partnered with some clever electronics that protects the device from misuse, making it compatible with the rental market into the bargain. Since then Jeff has been busy developing the concept still further and there has been some interesting new developments. “We were approached by a customer who was involved in supplying long reach excavators to the demolition industry,” explains the engineering brains behind the CR300 range. “He put it to me that there could be scope for removing the crusher head and adding a high-pressure water pump and transforming it into a dust suppression unit. Dust cannons are, of course, nothing new but there is nothing available at the size of the DS110. More importantly, our machine is built on all-terrain tracks and controlled fully by remote control, which has obvious advantages in enhancing the safety characteristics on the work site. The excavator operator is provided with the controls, and can, therefore, position the unit exactly where they want it without leaving the safety of the cab.
Utilising the same format track platform as the CR300 crusher, the DS110 features an adjustable flow rate, delivering up to 29litres per minute of high pressurised water vapour to a distance of up to 23m, but there’s also brains as well as brawn at work in this little machine. The directions of the water jet itself can be adjusted, again by remote control, and when required recorded through the innovative “teach” function. Those recorded movements are then repeated automatically where necessary to allow the operator to concentrate on their job of taking down the structure. It is powered by a fuel efficient Hatz 1B50 air cooled single-cylinder 4-stroke diesel engine, that’s certified to EPA Tier IV final and EU Stage V.

“You can turn up on site, track it out of the van or off a trailer using the remote control, and put it exactly where you need it,” concludes Jeff, “and all that by a single operator.”
Hybrid Crusher The DS110 is not the only new product on the Dragon Equipment portfolio because Jeff’s company has become the first plant manufacturer to launch a compact hybrid crusher. Bringing together the same principles of power, durability and ease of use as the original, the jaws of the CR300H are capable of crushing up to 7 tonnes an hour into reusable hardcore.
Built entirely in the UK, this hybrid unit weighs under 780kgs and, with a single lifting point and multiple tie-down points, can be easily transported in the back of a van, a trailer or a 4x4. Like the CR300 its 700mm width makes it the perfect tool for those jobs with difficult and narrow access, or where access is through an existing building. Given that it can track entirely on battery power no hazardous fumes are emitted, and it's even safe to take through a residential property. Offering more power, better fuel efficiency and lower emissions under high load conditions, the CR300H uses the same Vanguard 400 engine as its petrol-powered counterpart. Combined with a 15kW EMachine and lithium-ion battery – and some innovative programming on the engine control unit (ECU) – the right source and amount of power is utilised at all times. The hybrid technology dramatically reduces the emissions and noise produced, as well as fuel consumption. Making it compatible with jobs in more confined locations. Air and noise pollution can be a real concern, especially for jobs in built-up areas,

ith a reputation amongst owners and operators that proceeds it and then some, Cat is certainly not a manufacturer that will indulge in meaningless marketing monikers. The company’s Next Generation initiative, for instance, is a signal of guiding principles in machine design, and is championing industry-first features, lower costs, and increased performance. The latest group to join the line-up are the 302.7CR, 303CR, and the 303.5 CR models. As an explanation of the nomenclature, CR represent Compact Radius, with all models designed with zero or low rear overhang. In addition, the last two digits refer to the weight – 2.7, 3.0 and 3.5 tonne. Cat has already successfully introduced compact excavators in the 1-2 tonne and 6-10 tonne classes onto the Next Generation platform and reports that the feedback has been overwhelming positive.

Construction Plant News explores the latest Caterpillar mini excavator models Many of the innovations on the machines that hit the market more than two years ago, such as stick steer and cruise control, are in evidence on these latest additions, including the move towards electro-hydraulic (EH) controls. It is technology that has already gained plaudits for its adjustable operator settings, and a much greater degree of flexibility across different jobs. Furthermore, adjustments can even be made on the basis of individual cylinders, thereby adjusting hydraulic flow to bucket, or swing, and providing a highly customisable solution in the process. “As with all the Next Generation minis the introduction of stick steer allows for the control of machine travel by pressing the yellow button on the joystick on the left side,” explains Alex McDonald, Product Specialist – Mini Excavators at Caterpillar. “This is particularly useful when backfilling a trench with a blade, for example, where the blade control is in the right hand, and travel in the left. Similarly, the cruise control function is the

perfect companion to hydro-mechanical tools. In jobs like mowing, for instance, the machine tracking itself, whilst the tool is running, reducing complexity and operator fatigue.” In tackling ownership and operational costs, a tilting cab facilitates greater access to the mechanics of the machine whilst working in the field, which could well eliminate the need to transfer it to a workshop. The likes of valve banks and alternators are all fully in view, and that’s a theme that is continued with daily servicing, all of which can be conducted from ground level, from compartments that open without tools. Inside the cab all three models are available with air con, with the 302.7CR currently the only 2.7tonne class excavator on the market to be equipped with this welcome creature comfort.
Cost of Ownership Central to the Next Generation strategy is reducing total cost of ownership and commonality of components is a crucial weapon in winning that battle, particularly for hire firms who are required to devout large amounts of space to parts. In addition, in order to make them less susceptible to damage – and easier to repair – the steel panels on the new minis are manufactured deliberately flat and are again designed to be shared across the range. Caterpillar’s next generation of compact diggers are not just the result of a factory design and build but of a concerted and exhaustive regime of testing. Indeed, before going to market, over 4 ½ thousand hours of on-site customer trials have already been chalked up, across the widest possible range of applications and territories. As a result, end

The ergonomic controls and a highly readable and accessible monitor has equally won fans, as has the hands-free calling that Bluetooth connectivity provides. Moreover, whether it’s cooling with the air con or demisting with a heater, a pleasant working environment will always elicit a positive response. The 303.5CR replaces the existing 303.5E2 CR model, a machine that has itself garnered a very favourable reputation in the marketplace. From that position of strength Caterpillar has added the technologies that characterise the Next Generation concept, including the aforementioned EH control and the lower fuel consumption that the Cat C1.7 Stage V engine affords. The 303.5 will also be the first digger in its weight class to benefit from an angle blade where, when combined with stick steer, significant efficiencies in backfilling applications can be accrued. The 303CR replaces the outgoing 303ECR, and features a Cat C1.1 Turbo, the same powertrain utilised not just in the 302.7CR unit, but also in the previously introduced, 1-2
tonne models, making parts management across a fleet a much simpler proposition. More importantly, that engine achieves a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 10 per cent, with improvements in travel speed for the 303CR in particular over its predecessor.
Compact King The most compact of the new introductions the 302.7CR replaces the 302.7DCR and occupies a critical space in the market for hirers and contractors alike. In this size of excavator owner/operators demand maximum performance from a machine that sits within the 3,500kg tow limit within the UK and the EU, and that’s just what this 2.7tonne solution provides. Not only that, but Caterpillar has recognised the multi-tasking role now required of these excavators with much improved lifting capability. An expandable undercarriage option on the 302.7 CR will retract the track width to 1,355mm in confined spaces and then expand to 1,780 mm for greater stability. THE FRENCH CONNECTION A Mecalac machine demonstration day provided the opportunity to meet the latest entrant in the manufacturer’s MDX range of site dumpers
A
touch of Gallic design flair descended on rural Warwickshire recently with the global debut of a new Mecalac. The manufacturer’s 3.5MDX cabbed dumper was joined at the event by hydrostatic versions of its bigger siblings in the materials shifting range, as well as the same company’s AX1000 articulated wheel loader. The most compact of the MDX portfolio the 3.5 may be but there’s certainly no compromise on the quality of the build. Anyone already familiar with the 6MDX & 9MDX tonne dumpers will, for instance, experience a distinct feeling of déjà vu when climbing its self-cleaning easy access footsteps because the 3.5MDX benefits from exactly the same cab, with all the space that existing Mecalac users have become accustomed. A curved windscreen brings the A posts back, providing enhanced visibility from the driver’s seat, and reducing potential blind spots, whilst the air con option will certainly improve the operator experience. In addition, the MDX range remains the only cabbed dumpers with an isolated cab, reducing noise and vibration levels for the occupant. Making daily service checks easier means you’ve got a better chance of them actually being carried out and everything can be conducted from ground level, whilst this smallest machine in the range is afforded the same durable body panels as its MDX counterparts, including the protection afforded to the cooling pack by a steel plate to the rear. At the same time, all MDX machines are
equipped with four LED work lights as standard – two to the front and two at the rear. Featuring a Stage V-compliant Kubota D1803 1.8L turbocharged 3-cylinder diesel engine, the powertrain delivers 50hp (37kW) at 2,700rpm and a peak torque of 150.5Nm at 1,600rpm. A diesel particulate filter (DPF) and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) ensures it hits all the right emissions levels, whilst the unit will be available as a straight or swivel tip with 180º rotation, with Mecalac anticipating that the majority will opt for the latter. One of the wettest May’s on record had churned our Midlands test ground into just the kind of challenging terrain you’ll want to test a dumper on but, thanks to a permanent hydrostatic four-wheel-drive system, and high and low range gearing for both forward and
reverse, the 3.5MDX will not be found wanting. Add to that a travel speed of 12.4mph (20kph) an operating weight of 2,990kg, length of 3.8m, width of 1.9m and height of 2.8m, and you have a very nimble on-site materials handling solution. The latest 6 and 9 tonne MDX site dumpers on show at the Mecalac machine demo were also in the hydrostatic option. Already an established favourite on the continent, the smooth and interrupted power and dynamic braking the system affords makes it destined to become the industry transmission of choice in the not-too-distant future. The site dumper is a class of equipment that has been under scrutiny from safety perspective in recent years and hydrostatic wins out on those terms, as well as in userfriendliness and reduced maintenance, which means, as far as its premium MDX brand is concerned, Mecalac is supplying what the market is increasingly turning towards.

8MCR That Mecalac is a company that does things differently is exemplified in the Stage V 8MCR on show. Whilst it has benefitted from a recent refresh, including an updated cab that brings it into line with the MWR in terms of comfort levels, it’s the existing functionality and flexibility that has earned all the plaudits. A highly compact build is coupled with a 10km track speed, the ability to run as a tracked loader – with increased loaded capacities facilitated by placing the skid bucket against the blade – and exceptional levels of reach and lift capacity.

WHEEL LOADER The Mecalac AX1000 articulated wheel loader was another Warwickshire debutant, having never previously been showcased to the press on these shores. It’s fair to say that this is a class of equipment that is still more common on the continent, but the AX range that Mecalac has brought to the UK market features a choice of three multi-purpose models. In each instance the number designates the bucket capacity, with the AX700 featuring 0.7m3, the AX850 0.85m3, and the largest AX1000, 1.0m3. Where this unit can score with contractors
is a facility to run attachments – such as hand-held breakers – from its factory-fitted hydraulic connectors at the rear of the machine. Add to that a hydraulic quick coupler on the front as standard, and you have a very versatile on-site asset. The whole AX range is equipped with a Stage V 2.9-litre engine, with either 50 or 55kW output. Mecalac has thought carefully about how these machines are used on site and that’s reflected in the design. There’s very easy access in and out of the cab, for example, which operators on road repair jobs, where they may well be in and out operating tools,

will find welcome, and there’s exceptional levels of visibility to the bucket from the driver seat. Being inside the loader the bucket cylinder is protected from damage, and there’s high levels of tear out force. In addition, this French manufacturer has a tradition of innovation and that reflect in the AX by its self-stabilising system, with an articulated pendulum joint that makes carrying heavy loads across uneven terrain significantly safer and easier.

Construction Plant News sizes up the latest quick hitch and tiltrotator technology for smaller machines
T
he benefits of quick hitches are now well known, with the speed and safety of changing attachments from the driver’s seat improving productivity and encouraging the operator to utilise the right tool for the job. Until recently, however, the smallest machines were excluded from enjoying that convenience – but that is all set to change. In an entirely new development for the manufacturer, the Engcon S40 fully automatic machine hitch is now suitable for excavators from 2 – 6tonnes. That means that landscapers, for example, or operators on smaller residential jobs can change tools without stepping out of the cab. The opportunity for accidents does, of course, increase exponentially outside the protection of the machine but, as far as safety advances are concerned, Engcon hasn’t stopped there. The S40 also includes a check valve which, whenever hydraulic pressure is lost, or the integrity of a hose is compromised, will prevent the cylinder from opening. In addition, two sensors monitor the position of the attachment within the quick hitch and, if it moves, an alarm is sounded both inside and outside the excavator. In the unlikely even of the above systems failing there is also a separate latch to prevent the attachment falling out, combining both electrical and mechanical safeguards.

The S40 is compatible with the manufacturers full range of buckets and tools but can also work with the EC206 tiltrotator. The latter has now been updated for machines in the 4 – 6 tonne weight class with a new tilt top that is adapted for the same company’s automatic quick hitch system. This means that the driver can also attach and detach the tiltrotator without leaving the cab. If, for example, mass excavation is required the tiltrotator can be removed in favour of a bucket, but when more intricate grading becomes the order of the day then it can be re-attached in a matter of seconds. Like Engcon's larger tiltrotators, ground pressure is required to be able to open the bucket lock under the tiltrotator on the new S40 hitch. EC-Oil automatic connection of
hydraulic, electrical and central lubrication is included as standard when purchasing a machine hitch, tiltrotator and Engcon's control system. As an option, it is also possible to connect the ground pressure function on the machine hitch and a locking function, which means that the machine's swing function is blocked if the tool is connected incorrectly. Tiltrotators add significant levels of functionality to an excavator and allow end users to get the job done quicker and move onto the next. The benefits of not having to reposition a machine, particularly in confined spaces, the consequent reduction in wear and tear – and fuel burn – are all now open to smaller machines, and should be a particular boon to SME owner/operators.
