MAKING A RECOVERY

ith restrictions relaxing – and the vaccination programme being deployed at a prodigious pace – it’s apparent that we’ve moved into a new phase of the post-Covid recovery. When we reflect on the performance of the Lee Jones, construction industry over Editor the last two years, it is indubitably the case that it has enjoyed an unprecedented level of prominence. With many other sectors shut down, the value to wider society of the work that plant hirers and contractors undertakes, has been brought into sharp focus. Indeed, much of what the industry does is so vital that it simply can’t stand still and that’s a reality that has entered the public consciousness for the first time. Moreover, in terms of jobs, investment and economic impetus – as well as the broader benefits of improvements to our built environment and national infrastructure – construction has been asked to build back better, and it’s a challenge that it has eagerly taken up. There are, of course, significant challenges ahead, with supply issues likely to be with us throughout 2022. Similarly, a dearth of skilled operators has led to calls for temporary visa schemes to be introduced, whilst wider and long-term issues over how we will attract new talent remains. In this respect, it is hoped that the status construction has enjoyed in the Covid era as a driving force of economic activity can be sustained, and it will be recognised as viable destination for the next generation. In terms of the diversity of roles, opportunity for advancement, and financial rewards, there are few industries that can compete and that’s a fact that needs to be communicated with more confidence. The sustainability agenda also represents a huge opportunity for industry stakeholders to look at the fundamentals of

how they operate, but this too is not without its issues. The end of the rebate on red diesel in April now looms large, for example, and there is still a lack of awareness of what impact that might have on costs. Looking further into the future, diesel itself appears to be entering its end game and, whilst the direction of travel might be towards alternative powertrains, how we will make that journey is still not clear. What is more certain is that the underlying demand holds firm. As a nation, we’re still not building enough new homes, with the basic principles of supply and demand precipitating an affordability crisis in housing. Much more can be done to encourage smaller players into the sector,

Whether it’s roads, rail, or residential development a continued commitment to infrastructure spending is a prerequisite of UK productivity and prosperity. There is a very good reason that our legislators love a photo opportunity in a hard hat and hi vis, and that’s because they’re promoting an activity which is vital to our well-being. It is now the time for PR exercises to translate into actions that well help the industry succeed.

DOOSAN INFRACORE EUROPE HAS SIGNED AN EXCLUSIVE SUPPLY AGREEMENT WITH TOBROCO-GIANT

CONSTRUCTION SECTOR RISKS SLEEPWALKING INTO FUEL CRISIS A major UK fuel supplier has raised concerns that many construction companies are unaware of imminent changes to how they can legally power plant and machinery. From April 1st, 2022, the construction and road building industries will no longer be able to use rebated red diesel or rebated biodiesel in vehicles and machinery. Instead, they will have to switch to white diesel which carries a duty of 57.95p per litre – 46.81p higher than red diesel – as well as VAT charged at 20 per cent. “The lack of awareness in the marketplace that red diesel cannot be used beyond March next year is staggering,” declares Rix Petroleum managing director, Duncan Lambert. “Our sales teams are reporting that large construction businesses are almost completely unaware they soon won’t be able to use it.” Mr Lambert added construction companies should now start to think about running down existing fuel stocks to be prepared for the April 1st deadline. SPEEDY MOVES DECARBONISATION UP A GEAR WITH INDUSTRY-FIRST HVO SWITCH Speedy is now fuelling its delivery fleet with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) in an industry-first that will save 5,000 tonnes of CO2e over the next 12 months. The move covers delivery vehicles, heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and tankers at 21 of its biggest locations across the country, representing 92 per cent of the company’s HGV fleet. HOW MANY DIGGERS WOULD IT TAKE TO PICK UP ALL THE PLASTIC WASTE FROM THE LAST 12 MONTHS? As a whole, the UK produces two million tonnes of plastic waste each year. If these numbers seem too large to put into perspective, Tiger Plant Hire has calculated how many diggers it would take to pick up all of the plastic waste from the last 12 months. The operating weight of a 14-tonne Kobelco SK140SRLC-5 is around 14,500kg (or 14 tonnes). By doing the math, Tiger Plant has discovered the staggering number of diggers it would take to move the plastic waste of the UK (142,857 diggers) and also calculated the same figure for some of the top corporate culprits, including Coca-Cola, Pepsico, Danone, P&G Unilever and Colgate-Palmolive. n a site that’s already surrounded with some decidedly upmarket examples of new build design, Dave Hodges, Managing Director of DHC Services, is making a telling contribution of his own, and his two Kobelco excavators are fittingly sophisticated tools for a high-end setting. Supplied by Molson Group, DHC Services has been living with these distinctive and strikingly blue excavators for more than twelve months and the feedback from owner and operator alike has been unrelenting positive, as Dave reveals: “It was the first time we’d invested in this manufacturer, and a lot of drivers can have reservations from moving away from what they used to, but our guys took to them straight away.” The Mackenzie Miller Homes scheme consists of seven units, with an attenuation tank, associated drainage and traditional foundations all part of the DHC Services package of works. The initial deep excavations were a job for the largest excavator in the contractor’s fleet, a Kobelco SK210, including the installation of that attenuation tank, and connecting storm drain, as well as the groundworks for the roads and all the cut and fill. As a nimbler and more versatile unit, the SK140SRLC-7 has been charged with completing the plot foundations at a minimum of 600mm wide and 1metre deep, with a depth

The compact radius design of this 14-tonner has made it a popular digger amongst housebuilders who are looking for a well-balanced solution with the necessary power, and the DHC Services unit will be in attendance through much of the

lifetime of the project. “It’s easy work for machines that are as capable as these two Kobelco units,” enthuses Dave. “The reduced swing SK140 is small enough to access tighter sites and, with plenty of power in either digging or lifting, ticks every box, whilst the blade is very useful

when levelling. Not only that, but an operator can also change the settings depending on whether they’re undertaking deeper excavation duties or grading. As a result, whether it’s the SK210 or SK140 SRLC-7, these Kobelco machines facilitate a level of accuracy and refinement in our work which we really appreciate. The stormwater attenuation tank needed to be at a depth of 2.5m with a -/+ 10mm tolerance, for example. The Japanese manufacturer has focused squarely on operator comfort in recent years, which means DHC Services operators of the 7-series will enjoy an upgraded ROPS & FOPS certified cab, featuring a larger 10in. LCD display, and bright LED exterior lights. Additional creature comforts include a shock absorbing Grammer air suspension heated seat, as well as air con. Moreover, a faster performance than its predecessors has been achieved with a new hydraulic system and improved flow rates to the arm and boom. Kobelco is steadily developing a reputation in the market for smooth control, power on demand, reliability, and build quality. Add to that a level of fuel efficiency that is the envy of many of its contemporaries, and the manufacturer represents an attractive proposition for operators of all sizes. The 21-tonne DHC Services unit will, for example, achieve a frugal 8-10 litre consumption per hour on standard duties, which can be up to 20 per cent lower than many of its peers in the excavator market. That’s achieved through an advanced HINO engine, combined with a pump configuration that’s designed to be inherently less power hungry. Add to that

settings at the operator’s fingertips that can be easily adjusted to suit the task and the end result is a smooth and economical working day. If you don’t want to take the manufacturer’s word for it that aforementioned fuel usage can also be evidenced through the Kobelco Monitoring Excavation System (KOMEXS), a telematics platform that offers remote insight into the performance of an asset. “We’re big fans of the evidence you can source from the system,” continues Dave, “and not just in fuel usage but also in driver behaviour. We can dial in at any time, interrogate the data, and make sure it’s being used for the task it’s set up for, and offer additional training and support to a driver if it’s not. That can actually make a big difference in avoiding wear and saving fuel by eliminating unnecessary idling.”

SPEEDY BOOST CORE ECO TOOL SUPPLY A reduction in waste and embodied carbon is the ambition for the Speedy ECO tool range and 1,800 new Hilti cut off saws have been added to the growing portfolio. The new DSH 600-X model is designed to operate for four years, compared to the two-year lifespan of an average cut off saw used in construction. SMALL WONDERS Versatile and transportable, the ULM (Ultra Light Manitou) is set to achieve very good things in a small package.

n every class of machinery the market for compact solutions is increasing exponentially, and that’s certainly the case in telehandlers. With its ULM concept, Manitou has ambitions to be the leading player in the sector, and its new machines feature a host of features designed to win over hirers and owner/operators alike. Elsewhere in the company’s range telehandlers are designated with the prefix MT (Manitou Telescopic) for construction and MLT (Manitou Loader Telescopic) for agriculture, further distinguished by a red boom for the former and black for the latter. The ULM is by contrast a tool that transcends those classifications and will be pitched at farming, the building industry and landscapers. Occupying those diverse working worlds demands versatility and that’s achieved not just through the performance and functionality of the machine, but with a comprehensive attachments portfolio, beginning with buckets, but also including forks, augers, bag handlers, and a jib. Central to the ULM concept is the machine’s transportability, and that’s why it’s been designed to be light enough to be moved from site to site on a trailer with a 3.5tonne towing capacity van or pick-up. That makes it a viable ownership option for even some of the smallest contractors who might be currently relying on rental. At the same time this is a plant hire compatible telehandler that could easily be offered to contractors as part of a machine and trailer package. The ULM is not one machine but a range, with two options available. Firstly, there is the 412H, featuring a 1,250kg capacity, complemented by the 415H with a 1,500kg capacity, and a transportable weight of 2,550kg and 2,900kg respectively. With brownfield developments now very much in vogue size

matters, particularly in an urban setting and, for construction companies large or small, machinery that’s nimble enough to navigate a tight site is essential. With a total weight of 2,550kg the end user can carry the 412H on a trailer – accompanied by a 150–200kg attachment – and comfortably remain within a 3,500kg

towing limit. The 1,500kg capacity 415H is 2,900kg without attachment, which means it too can make use of trailer transport. Thanks to a width of just 1.49m and a height of 1.92m this truly is a compact unit with dimensions that will facilitate navigation through garage or double doors. At the same time there’s a 4.30m lifting height, and a choice of two-wheel, four-wheel and crab steering, with a maximum speed of 25kph. Add to that a high ground clearance of 29cm – as well as a choice of tyres – and this is a machine that can easily traverse challenging ground conditions. Moreover, both the 412H and the 415H utilise a hydrostatic transmission and are powered by

a 35hp Yanmar engine with Diesel Particalate Filter (DPF) but without the need for AdBlue. A unit in the ultra-compact telehandler class might be new territory for Manitou but it is a model in the same mould as its larger siblings, with the robustness in boom, and 4-wheel drive rough terrain prowess for which the manufacturer is renowned. Heavy-duty axles are complemented by a characteristic U-shaped boom construction, for example, a design which affords the highest possible strength and resistance. In operation, the tipping angle of the bucket aids digging, whilst the hydraulic cylinder on the boom is well protected. Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is of primary importance to the French material handling expert’s customers, and that’s why a number of innovations have been introduced to control costs. An anti-emulsion filter reduces the air in the hydraulic oil, for instance, which means less oil is required. In

The boom features two cylinders for lifting and tilting, with an electronic compensation system that utilises sensors to measure the angle of the boom, and bucket. Not only does this reduce overall weight, and the amount of

oil used, there’s fewer components, and the capacity of the hydraulic tank is reduced by around 25 per cent. Add to that a Stop & Start option that prevents unnecessary idling and you have a very economical solution. In maintenance all filters are easily accessible, with easy refuelling of the 30litre fuel tank. Road lights and front mudguards are standard, whilst rear mudguards are an option and working lights can also be positioned on the cab – front and rear – as well as on the boom. At the driver’s seat creature comforts have not been neglected either. Operators can enter an air-conditioned space (available as option) through a wide opening door. Here, they can take control with a floating armrestmounted Manitou JSM (Joystick Switch and Move) system which allows one hand on the steering wheel and one on the stick at all times. Furthermore, an EN 15000 system avoids overloading of the machine, whilst there’s different modes for working with buckets and forks. An in-cab screen highlights issues with operation through pop-up messages, helping the driver to use the machine correctly. In a further driver-focused feature, a shock resistant and transparent polycarbonate panel above the seat enhances visibility without compromising the FOPS accredited strength of the cab. Designed and built at the company’s Laille production plant, the ULM is a true multitasker that can take its telehandlers into hitherto uncharted territories, including the landscaping market. Indeed, its vital statistics and versatility should appeal to both plant hirers and contractors.

쑼Cat 988K XE Wheel Loader

Updates to the Cat 988K XE deliver up to 10 per cent faster downhill speed, improved rimpull and increased hydraulic breakout force for up to 5 per cent. Moreover, the updated design improves cycle times in load and carry applications, while an optional counterweight increases stability and offers faster maneouverability. The switch reluctance electric drive technology on the machine increases overall efficiency by 25 per

cent and face-loading application efficiency by up to 49 per cent compared to the 988K. Economy mode operation reduces rated speed of the durable Cat C18 engine to further reduce fuel consumption. Increased hydraulic speed and faster cycle times decrease idle time and fuel burn to increase loader efficiency. Greenhouse gas reductions through operating the electric drive versus the mechanical drive model are equivalent to up to 1 year of electricity use for nearly 10 homes.

Hitachi ZW180-7 Wheel Loaders 씰 Hitachi has unveiled the ZW180-7, a smaller next-generation model from its Stage V-compliant wheel loader range, which has been carefully designed to appeal to both owners and operators. Some of the lowest noise and vibration levels for operators in the market is how the manufacturer describes the in-cab comfort, with an improved seat with mounted electric pilot control leavers, ergonomic multifunction lever, anti-slip steering wheel, 40 per cent larger and fully adjustable armrest with integrated controller and convenient side switch panel. The hi-res screen is also easier to view. An Aerial Angle camera system offers a 270-degree bird’s-eye view of the job site which is complemented by a full LED work lights package. If anything is close to the rear of the machine, they are alerted immediately by the rear obstacle detection and warning system. The Approach Speed Control feature reduces fuel consumption by 16 per cent and significant improvements to the engine torque make for easier bucket filling, faster cycle times, and higher productivity with reduced fuel consumption.

Doosan DL-7 Range

The Doosan ‘DL-7’ range of wheel loaders has expanded with the introduction of the DL200-7 and DL420CVT-7 models. In addition to a Stage V engine, the manufacturer is promising higher productivity, increased fuel efficiency and a low cost of ownership, whilst redesigned buckets offer up to 7 per cent more capacity, with maximum bucket capacities from 2.0 to 6.4 m3. Power in the DL200-7, the smallest model in the range, is provided by the Perkins 1204J 4-cylinder Stage V engine with an output of 106 kW (144 HP) at 2,200 RPM. With an output of 240 kW (326 HP) of power at 1,800 RPM, the Scania DC09 engine in the DL420CVT-7 provides generous torque at low RPM. Both engines meet Stage V emission regulations through the use of selective catalyst reduction, diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter (DPF) after-treatment technologies. The DL420CVT-7 is equipped with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the result of a permanent combination of a hydraulic technology and a mechanical technology which provides a smooth and continuous speed variation. It allows the unit to automatically transition from hydrostatic power at low speed to the mechanical system to operate at higher speeds. With the CVT, a fuel saving of up to 15 per cent can be achieved.

hey are the scourge of motorists and represent a real danger to road users, but now JCB is arming contractors with a new weapon in the battle against potholes. Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s James Harper is an enthusiastic advocate for the concept and, since his local authority took delivery of the manufacturer’s Pothole Pro in July 2021, the unit has repaired 147 patches and counting in just 130 days, which represents an impressive total of 10,114 sq metres across the city in total. To put that into perspective, using traditional methods, it is estimated that the same amount of work would take at least 1,040 days. Based on the manufacturer’s Hydradig wheeled excavator, this three in one machine can cut, crop and clean, all from the comfort of

the cab. It combines a three-piece boom, Steelwrist tiltrotator, planer, brush, bucket and 400mm cropping tool. The unit delivers more than enough power to that 600mm planer to comfortably cut down to a maximum of 170mm, and the hydraulic depth adjustment means you can be assured it’s achieving the level set. It self-levels, regardless of the gradient, and can plane against the roadside kerb. Utilising the 1,200mm sweeper collector with dust suppression, material can then be easily gathered up and dumped into a waiting tipper truck. The built-in 400mm cropping tool then crops the patch where required, eliminating HAVS.

James reveals how the JCB Pothole Pro has transformed their working practices: “Previously we were breaking by hand, hiring in a backhoe with a ditching bucket, and using a mini excavator. Pneumatic hammers are brutal on the end user, and there will always be hand/arm vibration issues (HAVS). Not only that but the accuracy is just not there, which means you’re removing far more material than you need to, creating unnecessary waste and resulting in more aggregate being required, with increased vehicle movements to take the spoil away. The JCB Pothole Pro eliminates all of those issues and delivers a finish that is far superior to anything we’ve been able to produce previously. We can now be far more

precise when specifying sub-base and know exactly what we’ll need for any given job. Put simply, it’s a consistent and permanent repair, achieved in a fraction of the time.” In fact, JCB’s own figures suggest that a typical pot hole repair can be achieved in as little as eight minutes, with no specialist equipment, or labour intensive preparation.

The Pro Choice Not only are there clear benefits for the contractor but there are also gains to be made for road users and local residents, as James explains: “Because we’re completing the work so much quicker it reduces the level of disruption on the road network, and the general noise and inconvenience in a neighbourhood, which is great news for the general public.” Indeed, on a 200sq metre patch that the Pothole Pro was working on during our visit, James’s gang would be finished

in a single shift, ready to move onto the next job, where previously the same project could take anything up to 20 days to complete.” The machine’s 4-wheel steer and 360 visibility from the driver’s seat makes it nimble on tight sites, and planer, sweeper and cropping tool can be easily navigated around ironworks. The Stoke-on-Trent City Council gang are using their Pothole Pro night and day on resurfacing schemes ranging from 10 to 500 sq metres, and have significantly reduced the amount of plant required to undertake those works – but its uses don’t stop there. With a loading shovel attached they’re also loading a gritter, whilst with a digging bucket it can achieve any earthmoving requirements that the council workers encounter. Moreover, the Pothole Pro can also achieve a maximum 40kph travel speed. James and his team undertook two weeks of instruction with Endon-based Operator Training when the Pothole Pro was first purchased and has found the machine to be simple to use. “If you’re coming from a mini excavator or backhoe background, it’s easy enough to pick up,” he concludes. “It really is performing a multitude of tasks and the rewards in terms of time saved are huge.”

here are some projects that will sweep aside the impact even of a pandemic and that’s certainly the case with the maintenance of our nation’s vital utilities infrastructure. Scott’s Hire has been supplying the construction industry with the tools to undertake this crucial work since the late ‘90s and Takeuchi mini excavators are an integral feature of its fleet. With its origins in the north-west, the rental outfit can now boast a nationwide coverage from strategically based depots in Sandbach, Cheshire, Walsall for the Midlands, and two further satellite locations, with a dozen mobile engineers based around the country. In addition, Scott’s has long-term contracts to supply nonoperated plant to some the industry’s biggest utility service providers, which takes them into a diverse range of sectors, from prisons to local authorities, highways and rail projects. “Our main emphasis is the utilities sector,” explains the company’s Gareth Cotgrove. “Traditionally that’s been water, gas and electric

It’s a recession and pandemic proof market and during the various lockdowns our client base were often able to capitalise on the fact that the road networks were relatively quiet to advance any schemes that were in the pipeline.” In the world of collapsed sewers and power outages time is of the essence, and it’s an environment in which Scott’s Hire thrives, as Gareth reveals: “Our utilities customers are invariably working on reactive contracts, where a principal contractor can be charged by the minute to repair a compromised water or gas pipe. That in turn demands that their machinery supplier can get equipment to them quickly and

it can be relied upon in performance. In that market it’s all about service and reaction time and where we differ from many of our competitors in plant hire is that we run a 24hour operation. Scott’s Hire offers its customers excavators from micros up to 22 tonne all from premium brands such as Hitachi and Komatsu, with its more compact machines in the 1 ½, 3, 5 and 6 tonne weight class primarily sourced from Takeuchi via dealer, Parkway Plant Sales. The association with the Japanese manufacturer is, in fact, a long one, with the hirer one of the first UK customers to invest in the brand in the mid ‘90s, and now boasts in excess of 300 Takeuchi units on its books. This rental firm prides itself on being innovative. New green welfare units reduce the

idling engine emissions and new electric excavators sit alongside the ground-breaking Digadoc Trailer and Takeuchi excavator. “You’ll find the likes of United Utilities, Thames Water, and Severn Trent, as well as their subcontractors, towing around a Scott’s Hire Takeuchi and trailer,” continues Gareth “We actually conceived and developed the Digadoc concept ourselves, and the business is now run as a sister company. Its success has been safety and compliance driven and it is now the preferred means of transporting a mini excavator amongst some of the biggest players in utilities. As a consequence, we have the largest fleet of these units in the UK, which can equally be supplied with a hydraulic breaker and three buckets onboard.” So why has Scott’s Hire remained true to Takeuchi for nearly three decades? It is a common lament in the rental sector that hire

rates have stubbornly refused to move whilst the price of the most advanced machinery has increased dramatically, a reality that demands that the right decisions on investment are made. Gareth tells us what he and the team are doing to square that particular circle: “For us the two key factors in determining what assets we acquire are reliability and residual values. In our experience Takeuchi scores very highly on both counts – they simply don’t breakdown, and if you find something that works you stick with it. “On the job, they also demonstrate a very good level of stability, power to weight ratio, and operators really like them. The 5 & 6 tonne units combine an offset boom with zero tail swing, for instance, which means they can slew 360º almost within their own tracks which makes them popular amongst utility contractors, who are often operating in very tight spaces. Moreover, the 2 ½ tonne TB23R and the newer TB325R appeal not only because they’re reduced tailswing, but also because it allows the end user to transport them using a Digadoc trailer with a pick-up or van with a 3 ½-tonne towing capacity.”

Modern Fleet The last couple of years have been amongst the busiest for the Cheshire-based company but they have also had to overcome significant supply chain challenges: “As part of our

continuous improvement programme we are committed to investing in 150 new machines within the first quarter of every year and ensuring that the majority of our equipment is no more than three years’ old. That’s a position we have maintained, but there’s undoubtedly been an issue with sourcing the kit. With the likes of Highways England contractors now insisting on all kit conforming to the latest emissions standards, the age of the fleet is more important than ever.” Scott’s Hire has established itself as a key player in one of the construction industry’s most demanding sectors, but there are bigger plans afoot. It is undertaking a significant expansion to its Sandbach site, for example, which will include state of the art workshop facilities, and a new head office complex. “We’ve earnt a reputation for being there for our customers when they need us,” concludes Gareth, “and the Takeuchi machines on our fleet are very much a part of that service.”

BACK TO T THE BEST The CASE Construction Equipment Backhoe Loader has been setting industry standards for more than 60 years, and the latest launches are inheriting the mantle. Construction Plant News reports.

he new incarnation of the CASE Construction Equipment Europe Backhoe Loader is the continuation of a long and proud tradition that began as long ago as 1957. Significant milestones since then have included the development of the extended dipper in 1964, with the CASE Extandahoe. Fast forward to 1998 and ride control on a backhoe was another world first, whilst Power Shift transmission arrived at the turn of the millennium, along with an integrated quick hitch. Add to that the introduction of the industry’s first fully electric unit – the 580 EV – and the manufacturer can point to more than six decades of innovation in one of its flagship machine classes. The focus has always been on delivering comfort, productivity and profitability for its customers, and the SV Series continues in that vein. The new models are the 580 SV, 590 SV and 695 SV all of which have been completely redesigned. The manufacturer promises that comfort and the operator experience have been dramatically improved, with reduced emissions from a Stage V powertrain without detriment to performance. The machines are powered by a FPT F36 3.6 litre engine producing 96 or 110hp – delivering what is described as best in class power and torque density – with Stage V achieved through maintenance-free after-treatment. Indeed, the new Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system has been designed specifically for backhoe loader applications, and there’s 500 hours engine oil changing, with the convenience of one-sided engine serviceability. In operation, the cylinder layout assures good visibility along the boom and, with hydraulic side shift at the press of a

button, the operator can shift left to right on the H frame with ease. As well as that, CASE is introducing Eco mode as standard on all units, a system which automatically regulates engine speed and hydraulic pressure in operations that do not require sustained speed and power, and can achieve an impressive fuel saving of up to 10 per cent. Similarly, auto idle automatically lowers the engine speed, when the machine has been inactive for more than five seconds, whilst auto engine shut down switches off the engine when there has been no activity for more than ten minutes. The available connected after-sales solutions are gathered together in the Case Service Solutions range. Case Site Watch, for

Through it they can remotely access the machine and take corrective action faster. Case Protect is the manufacturer’s extended warranty programme and Case Care is the company’s planned maintenance programme – all of which adds up

to no unexpected costs and maximum uptime. Some of the biggest innovations can be found at the driver’s seat, with 10 per cent more space than on previous models. When rotating to backhoe position feet and knee clearance have been greatly improved, and operators will experience more leg room overall. The king-cab benefits from more storage space, and visibility has been enhanced, especially at the rear, with 360 degree vision across a job site. The right-hand pillar and console has been completely remodelled so that the operator can easily access all controls. There’s also the option of a super deluxe air suspension seat, with fully adjustable height, backrest and armrest, whilst noise levels have been reduced by more than 3db compared to previous models.

Daniel Took, Head of Product at Kärcher UK discusses the best cleaning practices for cleaning construction machinery to a high standard.

CLEAN MACHINE

onstruction machines are exposed to huge quantities of dirt during operation. Whether on site or off-site, cleaning measures play an important role in preserving functionality and retaining value as well as acting as a precondition for maintenance and repair. Clean operating equipment is also essential for protecting employees and ensuring workplace safety. There are a range of cleaning methods that can be utilised to protect machines from cold- and hot-water high pressure to dry ice blasting.

Cold-water high pressure on-site: Whether dump trucks or diggers – construction machines take a lot of punishment but need to remain fully operational. To ensure this, intermediate cleaning on site is essential. For fast and efficient cleaning, cold-water high-pressure washers are ideal; removing dirt from chains, shovels or wheels without the need for cleaning agents. A robust design enhances the pressure washer’s portability allowing them to be easily transported around the site on pallets or by crane hook depending on where the machines are located. When selecting the machine, it must be ensured that, in addition to sufficient pressure, it offers a flow rate of at least 1,000 l/min. The larger the flow rate, the higher the amount of water coming from the pressure washer aiding the removal of large quantities of dirt. The water supply can be provided via a mains connection or a tank on location, or by means of a high-pressure trailer, depending on the machine and local conditions. In addition, it must be decided whether an electrically powered model is appropriate, or versions with a diesel or petrol engine. To achieve the desired delivery rate, various nozzles are available as accessories. Flat jet nozzles are designed for removing coarse dirt from surfaces – for example on shovels or trailers. If hardened dirt must be removed from a small surface, a point jet nozzle is more suitable. Rotation nozzles combine both functions as they can be rotated to alter the nozzle depending on what is required.

Hot-water high pressure off-site: When machines are off-site or returned to the firm, deep cleaning is essential before any maintenance can be done. Stationary installations set up as wash bays equipped with hot-water high-pressure systems are ideal for achieving a faster cleaning result. If oily or greasy dirt is involved, a cleaning agent can be used to reinforce the quality of clean at the wash bays. Here it is important to

use a separator-friendly cleaning agent to separate oil and grease from the excess water. This process allows the water to be treated appropriately and in accordance with local restrictions and guidelines.

Using dry ice blasting: High-performance machines with small components, electronic circuitry or sensitive hydraulic systems are best suited to cleaning with dry ice. Dry ice cleaning can only be done off-site, but it allows for an effective and gentle clean without residue waste. Dry ice blasters apply compressed air to accelerate the up to 3millimetre-large dry ice pellets to over 150 m/s. The dirt is frozen at a temperature of -79°C and becomes cracked so that it can be removed effortlessly. Furthermore, the dry ice penetrates even the tiniest nooks without the need to remove components, and no residues remain after the cleaning is completed.

Removing wastewater: During the cleaning of construction machines, large quantities of dirty water are often produced. It is important that this water is disposed of correctly, particularly if oil escapes from the hydraulic system during the cleaning and gets into the wastewater. During all work it must therefore be ensured that local sewage law and the regulations on water treatment are respected. At wash bays in firms, oil separators must be installed. Selecting the right type of cleaning based on the machine and its location is a key step to protecting the longevity of construction machines and retaining their value. Ensuring a safe working environment and clean equipment will go a long way to maximising performance in the long run.

re you currently in the market for a shiny new, all the very latest mod cons van? Or perhaps a mighty testosterone fuelled pick-up truck has taken your fancy? Well, hold your workhorses for just a moment. It may have escaped your attention – and we have to confess until a few months ago it had largely avoided our discerning eye – but there is actually a third commercial vehicle option which could turn some previously wellintentioned conventions on their head. Like the best things in life, of course, it comes at a pretty hefty premium, so look away now if you are of a nervous disposition, but for those in construction hoping to make a bold statement about their particular artisanship, or simply spend more time between hard-to-access sites than actually getting their hands dirty on one, then let us take you quite literally on a voyage of Discovery. Not exactly going for a song, but certainly all singing and dancing, the oft affectionately

abbreviated “Disco” Discovery Commercial from Land Rover is much more sophisticated nightclub than the sweaty church hall of your youth. Expect to pay a not insignificant entrance fee but what you get from then on in is a heady cocktail mix of what has made the Discovery one of the biggest noises in family SUV’s for more than 30 years. In many ways it seems almost a sacrilege to turn it in to a van but clearly the company are

confident that there are sufficient customers out there who value driving creature comforts and top end performance over pure load carrying capacity (748kg payload). In fact, it’s claimed that one in four Discovery models sold in the UK is a commercial, which basically comes without rear seats, which are replaced by a hard-wearing load area and heavily tinted windows. There’s some clever technology on hand to maximise grip for a variety of different surfaces and terrains and, with a permanent four-wheel drive with high and low range gearing, you would be hard pressed to find a typical UK scenario where it could get stuck. At the very rear, the load area is accessed by a powered tailgate operated via the key fob or by pressing a button in the rear number plates. Opened it provides a handy backstop to items falling out and can double as a seat. It’s fair to say that there is nothing else quite like it currently on the market, which can be interpreted in a number of ways, of course. Up

front, as you would expect, there is an impressive level of Discovery standard car equipment with a new enhanced centre console with Pivi Pro 11.4in. HD infotainment touchscreen and intelligent seat fold technology to maximise driver comfort. The Disco is available exclusively in SE and HSE specifications, powered by Land Rover’s latest in line sixcylinder Ingenium petrol and diesel engines with 48V mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) technology, which has all the required thrust to get from 0 to 60 in 6.5 seconds and cope with 3,500kg of towing capacity. Unfortunately, the weight and modifications limit it to legal van speeds, so that’s 60mph on a dual carriageway, although spotting the subtle differences would test the observation levels of even the most zealous traffic cop.

Distillery of which Land Rover enjoys a mutually beneficial association – well worth a visit if you are ever in the vicinity. The Hard Top Defender comes in two body designs – 90 and 110. The interior combines a protected two-seat passenger compartment, with the option of a third central jump seat, and a flexible rear load bay that provides 1,335 and 2,059 litres of useable load space respectively and payloads of 670 and 800kg. Again, the powerful Ingenium D200, D250 or D300 in line six-cylinder engines are coupled with an eightspeed automatic transmission and intelligent allwheel drive. The flexible load area features full rubber floor coverings, lashing points, hooks, lockable underfloor storage and a full bulkhead for security and safety. A clear sight rear camera

(option) and 3D surround camera (standard) ensures maximum visibility around the whole vehicle, making light work of tight manoeuvres and off-road terrain which can see the Defender wade up to 900mm (more impressive than some well-known specialist pick-ups) and tow 3,500 kg with advanced tow assist technology. Prices for the Hard Top start at around £36,000 plus VAT, no small potatoes, of course, but you really couldn’t choose to be in better company when the chips are down!
