Host Dewan Annual Award | Tamayouz Excellence Awards Baghdad, Iraq 10.2020 Role: Project Designer, Editor and 3D Artist Tools: Free-hand | Photoshop | InDesign | AutoCaD | 3DS Max

Design Approach

The project’s goals are based on two main socio-spatial targets; solidify place attachment for Al Medina’s youth and re-establishing the overview of the site context and (Souq) Al Mredy Marketplace. Firstly our design aims to embody Iraqi Firstly, youth identity in a place where they can express their aspirations, intentions and hopes for better opportunities and promising future. The project design and activities are driven by some site inspirations and reflections toward more socio-spatial attachment, ownership and stewardship. Secondly our vision for the marketplace Secondly, is to overcome some basics problem, such as disorganization, poor drainage system, waste and noise pollution as well as Toktok’s traffic congestion problem by following different approaches such as placemaking and efficient use of spaces, the storm water management, climate adaptation, waste and noise mitigation and traffic management. Precisely, the morphology of the plaza and the youth house design is shaped by the overlapped ellipses in order to form the main loop and linkages between the activities. In addition of using some extroverted and introverted spaces to provide sort of enclosure and privacy for our target users groups as well as sort of welcoming approaches for other place visitors.

SOCIO ECONOMY

ECO-SYSTEM RESTORATION

The design formation parameters are based on people focused, ecological treatments and socio- economical aspects. The design aims to enhance the surrounding urban forms conditions, mobility and walkability congestions and marketplace manipulation, eco-system restoration and climatic solutions with ecological reformation through landscape urbanism approaches that targets the morphological and perceptual and cultural dimensions. According to the significant site’ historical identity, symbolic value and community linkage power through different people typology; pushed us to bring back the place identity through regenerative, vital and livable urban place designed as transit zone that could serve the surrounding commercial traffic, manipulate the mobility congestions and ecological treatment through a very contemporary landscape design in order to revival the social integration perceptions oriented to the surrounding urban context. Create a place that could be considered as a memorial narrator and capable to reflects the all different changes happened due to the dark evidences that took place and its consequences through the history. Our design philosophy was driven by the Paradigm Shift phenomena inspiration which will lead us to find ways to reflect our cultural feelings, belonging and sympathy to one of the most valued and majestic cities in our Arab World. The design challenge is how to respect the place power and convert its weakness into strengths, the existing threats into opportunities within the local and national scales and bring back the place spirit.

ICONIC MOSQUE

Brief: The philosophy is to make the mosque as an attractor and focal point, bringing back the old function of mosque’s features like it’s minarets but by a very contemporary way of design which will attract and encourage people to come, visit and discover. Design Concept

DESCRIPTION The main conceptual idea is to create the project’s morphology breaking the surrounding urban context and being very iconic but highly integrated with it, using the pedestrian paths crossing the landscape topography will increase the coming flow and respect the nature growth.

In Order to respect the site’s potentials, we decided to keep the green corridor safe and linked with the roof plaza making it useful and creating fast shortcut between West and East. Also, the design inspired by the Kaaba “Qibla “ as a main attraction for the site that everything is pointed toward it’s Direction, that shows the highly respect of this holistic idea. N

Brief: The project’s slogan is “Use the Nature as a teacher” and the main concept of the project is using the Biomimcry approach. The design concept is based on mimicing the lotus leaves and using its abstraction in the relationship of its natural cells. The idea of the old trees and their roots structure on the ground in addition to their random growing way will effect the whole deign.
