Kellaway Park, Clodgey Lane, Helston, Cornwall TR13 8PJ

Welcome to Kellaway Park, the home of ‘The Blues’ of Helston Athletic Football Club. The 22/23 season was without doubt the club’s most successful of recent times, if not that of any in the clubs one hundred and twenty seven year history. Whilst progressing further in The FA Cup than ever before in addition to completing a Cornwall Senior Cup and Western League Les Phillips Cup double exceeded expectations, an early FA Vase exit along with finishing sixth in the league has given room for yet further gains to be achieved. Away from the flagship the wider club triumphed in three additional county cup competitions whilst finishing as runners up in a further two. Several youth teams were also crowned league and / or league cup champions. Win or lose the club and town remain proud of everyone who represented Helston Athletic Football Club last season. As a club we continue to strive for continued improvement both on and off the field of play. Over the forthcoming months we hope the results of the dedication and hard work of those who give up so much of their time will continue to enhance your match day experience whether you are a player, an official or a spectator. Compliance has become ever more important to help ensure everybody enjoys their football in the safest of environments. Helston Athletic Football Club are therefore pleased to share that it was recently awarded an England Football Accredited Club 3* rating. The award reflects the club’s commitment to the future of football within our local community. As always, the club remains extremely grateful for the valuable contributions of the numerous organisations, businesses and volunteers who continue to support us. Without your individual support running a successful football club for all ages would be impossible – thank you. Finally, we hope you enjoy your visit to Kellaway Park today, so much so that you return very soon. Here’s to another successful year of footballing action and for all things Helston.

Welcome all, For a fourth consecutive Saturday we play at home, for a third consecutive Saturday we take on a club promoted to the Toolstation Western League Premier Division at the conclusion of last season. Please join me in welcoming the players, officials and supporters of St Blazey FC to Kellaway Park this afternoon. Likewise our match officials Lee Roberts, Neil Stephens & Andrew McKnight. Formed in 1896, similar to ourselves, ’The Greens & Blacks’ have an impressive list of league and cup honours, no more so than being crowned champions of the old South Western League on thirteen occasions whilst having also won the Cornwall Senior Cup eleven times. Personally I’m delighted they have joined ourselves and other Cornish clubs to compete in the Western League. Following last Saturdays win over Oldland Abbotonians we switched our attention to our continued defence of the Les Phillips Cup away at The Waterways of Saltash United on Tuesday evening. Delighted to have come away with a two goal to one victory that sees us progress to the quarter final stage of the competition for a third consecutive season. Similar to last season we will now host Buckland Athletic. The date for your diary is Tuesday 30th January 2024, KO 7:45pm. Having last week said goodbye to Rubin Wilson, it's great to be able to welcome Callum Martindale (pictured) to Helston. With a treble still very much alive, Callum joins The Blues at a pivotal time of the season. All being well he will be making his debut this afternoon. For this first time this season we have no match next weekend, we sort of planned that way to allow everyone time to do their Christmas shopping ahead of an important month of league fixtures verses Ilfracombe (A), Welton Rovers (H), Falmouth Town (A) and Torpoint Athletic (H). For full details of these fixtures please follow the clubs social media channels, alternatively copy and paste the following into your web browser https://fulltime.thefa.com/displayTeam.html? divisionseason=818798076&teamID=24785524 Finally for today, this evening sees the return of Chairman's Bingo. Be great to see as many as possible join in the fun. It’s eyes down at 7:30pm I think that’s all for now. Please enjoy your afternoon and as always, thank you for your support. Paul Hendy (Chairman)

Interest in promotion from the Premier Division of the Toolstation Western League will be extended from the top two places to the top five, in the 2023/24 season. The Football Association have announced that next season, there will be a fourteam Play-Off in each of the sixteen Step 5 divisions, the level of the non-league pyramid occupied by the Western Leagues Premier Division, guaranteeing a second promotion place into the Southern League. Last season, Saltash United were denied promotion by Bristol Manor Farm, who managed to retain their Southern League status, defeating their Western League rivals at the Creek. The FA’s proposals for promotion and relegation, announced in March 2023, have signalled that the inter-step play off is a thing of the past, with Western League Clubs now competing against each other for a playoff place, subject to their facilities meeting ground grading requirements. Next season, two sides are set to be relegated from the Southern League Division One South, as the FA seek to increase the divisional size at Step 4 to 22 Clubs per division. The FA’s latest reorganisation is good news for Western League Premier Division Clubs as only one side will be liable for relegation next season. From the 2024/25 season, the FA have announced their intention that four Clubs will be relegated from Southern League Division One South, along with the other seven divisions that cover the country at Step 4. However, the future of the Western League is uncertain going into the 2024/25 season, with an FA working group currently looking into the future structure of Step 5 and 6 football in the South West, following the collapse of the merger between the South West Peninsula League and the Western League, earlier this year. Should the FA undertake a reorganisation of football in the South West and create an additional Step 5 Division to address the considerable travel distances Clubs currently face, this may impact both how and how many sides are promoted and relegated across the region.

FOCUS ON ST BLAZEY AFC

The club was formed in 1896 as a junior club, by Dr. E.S.S. Davis, a member of the Cornwall County Football Association . St Blazey won the Eastern Divisional Cup, Junior Cup, and Bodmin & District League Cup in 1909 and 1910 before it attained Senior status later that year. The club reached the final of the Cornwall Senior Cup twice in the early 1930s, finishing as runners-up on both occasions before winning the competition for the first time in 1936, along with the Cornwall Charity Cup, and Herald Cup to become the first club to win all three trophies in one season. St Blazey were a founder member of the South Western League in 1951, a league which they won thirteen times, including the 2002-03 season when they suffered no league defeats en route to winning the trophy. The club achieved thirty-three victories, and three draws from thirty-six league matches that season, earning 102 points. St Blazey are considered to be among the most successful clubs in Cornwall. Its first senior league title came in 1955 when the club became champions of the South Western League, a competition which they have won thirteen times in total, while they have finished as runners-up on another ten occasions. The club has also achieved considerable success in cup competitions, including the Cornwall Senior Cup, a competition which they first won in 1936. St Blazey have won the competition eleven times, with their most recent success coming in 2002. They have finished as runners-up on another ten occasions. The club's most recent success came last season when they won the South West Peninsula West division gaining promotion to the Western League.

FOCUS ON ST BLAZEY AFC

Player Profiles... Kyle MOORE (GK). Kyle joined us part way through the season from Plymouth Parkway and was part of the team that won back to back promotions. An excellent shot stopper and distributor of the ball, he will add great value to our new campaign. Jordan BENTLEY. Jordan enters his 3rd season with the club. He continues to be a dominant CB who can play within different formations. and was part of our cup double success in the previous campaign. Aaron BENTLEY. Aaron enters his 3rd season with the club. He is a technically efficient defender with attributes to play in other positions. Aaron has an excellent football pedigree and has operated at higher levels. Harrison JEWELL (Capt) An exceptional season last year, H put in many M.O.M performances and won 2 of our end of season awards. An influential CB who has also been made captain for this campaign. Callum O’BRIEN. A throwback to how defenders used to be, no nonsense and hard hitting. Lethal at set plays and can play on the deck as well. Deceptively quick over 10-15 metres. Tom MOXHAM. Excellent pedigree having completed a Plymouth Argyle scholarship followed by four years at the University of Pittsburgh. Expect to see Mox impacting games as a full back or a wing back with his excellent delivery. Dave BARKER. Has set the standard for right sided full backs/wing backs over the past five years. Barks regularly chips in with double figures each season, a remarkable stat given his position. He actually grabbed a 90th minute winner here for his former club Saltash last season. He will bring value at both ends of the pitch with added leadership qualities. Tom PAYNE. Payney had an exceptional campaign last season. He chipped in with 15 goals and 15 assists from midfield, and scored in the first of our two cup final triumphs last campaign. Baga MARIKO. Baga joined part way through this season. A young and very athletic defensive midfielder that gets that awkward toe in to thwart attacks. He was signed as we didn’t have this profile of a player so compliments the midfield well and gives us options.

Player Profiles... Jacob SMITH. The youngest of our summer signings. Played the most number of games for Torpoint last season as a base midfielder. Has worked with the manager before at Plymouth Parkway. Has put in some impressive performances in preseason and continues to adopt and excellent approach on the training ground. Stevie COLWELL. Stevie has operated at higher levels having previously played with Weymouth, Tiverton and more recently, Plymouth Parkway. A ball playing midfielder with exceptional technical and tactical quality. Tyler ELLIOTT. Ty is a versatile player that can operate in many positions within the team. Last season he was regularly impacting games from wider positions. He has a terrific work ethic and appetite for the game. Kai CORNISH. Kai has now completed his university studies and therefore feels like a new signing. An accomplished dribbler that can impacts games in the final third. We are hopeful it will be a big campaign for him. Sam CARTER. Cart’s season had lift off around September last campaign. He found himself amongst the goals and assists from an attacking midfield position. Extremely athletic, Carts will be looking to build on his successful campaign last time around. Jordan COPP. Jordan is one of the most technically gifted players the manager has worked with. He brings bags of experience and pedigree having operated at Step 2 with Weymouth. An attacking player of exceptional quality who can operate wide or centrally. He created 18 assists in the last campaign. Rikki SHEPHERD. Rikki is a lightning quick striker who finished top scorer last campaign with 26 goals. He proved a big game player scoring in both of our cup winning finals. We are expecting more big things this season.

Jamie SIMMONDS. The manager honestly doesn’t know how this lad gets through each day! Aside from that, he is starting to flourish as a footballer in this environment and is more regularly impacting games in offensive positions. Jamie is one of the best technicians in the team and we are expecting big things from him this season. Curtis DAMERELL. Another manager described Curtis as ‘the complete number 9’. He was joint top scorer in the Western League last season. Curtis has had a slower start to the pre-season due to injury. However he is now well on the road to recovery and is getting better all the time on the training ground and in matches. Expect him to add huge value to the front line this season.
