Official matchday programme of Bishop Sutton F.C.

Toolstation Western League Division One Cheddar

Thursday 11th April 2024

7.30pm

Good evening everyone,

Welcome back to Lakeview for tonight’s Toolstation Western League Division One fixture with Cheddar. We offer a very warm welcome to all their supporters & officials along with the three match officials too, hoping they all have a safe journey home too.

Just four games remain now of what has been a trying and difficult season for the club. We await to see what will happen with the promotion and the relegation from the League with several clubs rumoured to be requesting a move back to the Western League and three teams applying for promotion from below (believed to be Avonmouth, Mendip Broadwalk and Fry Club).

Your support for the club, both on and off the field, is always very welcome so please come to as many games as possible as we look to finish the final part of the season in a better place.

Enjoy the game!

Bishop Sutton Club History

The club was re-formed in 1977 with just an U15 team playing in the Weston-superMare Sunday League and then progressing in successive seasons to the Bristol and Avon League U16s and the second and first divisions before being admitted into the Somerset Senior League for the 1981-82 season.

The next ten years were spent climbing through the four divisions before being voted into the Western League for season 1991-92. The First Division was won in 1997-98 and then followed seventeen successive seasons in the Premier Division, the highlight being winning the Premier title in 2012-13.

Unfortunately our ground grading did not permit progression to the Southern League and all the team management and players then left the club. Relegation from the Premier followed at the end of season 2014-15 and we have experienced mixed fortunes in the First Division since then.

For the season 2020-21 Jon Toy came in as manager but unfortunately we were only able to play 10 games before the season was curtailed due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Having retained a lot of last season’s squad and added a couple of new players, we finished in mid table in season 2021/22 followed by seventh place last season. Jon left in the summer and was replaced by Catalin Andrei and Steve Taylor.

Chris Blammon took over in the autumn of 2023 as first team manager.

CHEDDAR AFC

Cheddar Football Club was established in 1892, playing at the local cricket ground near the then Cheddar railway station on the Strawberry Line. The Cheddar Valley League, of which the Cheese Men were one of the founders, was formed in the 1900’s. A couple of years after winning the league in 1911, the club joined the Western & District League and moved to a new ground where the Kings of Wessex Academy playing fields are now situated.

A historic £1500 investment in 1952 allowed the club to relocate to the current ground, Bowden’s Park, after re-joining the Cheddar Valley League shortly after the Second World War.

The ‘shack’, as it was affectionately known opened in 1981 as a licensed facility providing the foundation for future Somerset County League success and was converted into the current clubhouse in 1987.

To coincide with the centenary year in 1992, the club built new changing rooms and installed flood lights, allowing evening matches to be hosted. Cheddar FC then advanced to Somerset County League Premier Division in 2004 and in 2011 gained promotion to the Western League Division 1 for the first time.

Cheddar has continued to look to progress each season and as recently as 2018/19 had a second-place finish which usually would have guaranteed promotion to the division above. This was complimented by a good run to the second preliminary round of the FA Cup and the second round of the FA Vase.

The added introduction of the play-off system gave a new dynamic to the 2021/22 season where we finished 1 point outside the play-offs in what was an enthralling final game of the season.

2022/23 was a transitional period following the departure of several of the “old guard” players resulting in an opportunity for the previous seasons reserve team to step up which they duly did so and secured our position in the Toolstation for this season as we look to build on that.
