“THE LAKE VIEW” Official matchday programme of Bishop Sutton F.C.

Toolstation Western League Division One Bristol Telephones Saturday 3rd February 2024

3.00pm

Good afternoon everyone, Welcome back to Lakeview for today’s Toolstation Western League Division One fixture with Bristol Telephones FC. We offer a warm welcome to their supporters & officials along with the three match officials too, hoping they all have a safe journey home too. Hopefully the worst of the weather has passed now and we can get into a run of fixtures without interruption. Thankfully we have managed to keep up fairly well with our games compared to some teams but the next month in particular looks busy with six matches, five of which are here at Lakeview. We have some tasty looking encounters among them with local-ish games against Bitton, Hengrove, Longwell Green and of course today’s visitors, the Phones too. Your support for the club, both on and off the field, is always very welcome so please come to as many games as possible as we look to finish the final third of the season in a better place.

Bishop Sutton Club History

The club was re-formed in 1977 with just an U15 team playing in the Weston-superMare Sunday League and then progressing in successive seasons to the Bristol and Avon League U16s and the second and first divisions before being admitted into the Somerset Senior League for the 1981-82 season. The next ten years were spent climbing through the four divisions before being voted into the Western League for season 1991-92. The First Division was won in 1997-98 and then followed seventeen successive seasons in the Premier Division, the highlight being winning the Premier title in 2012-13. Unfortunately our ground grading did not permit progression to the Southern League and all the team management and players then left the club. Relegation from the Premier followed at the end of season 2014-15 and we have experienced mixed fortunes in the First Division since then. For the season 2020-21 Jon Toy came in as manager but unfortunately we were only able to play 10 games before the season was curtailed due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Having retained a lot of last season’s squad and added a couple of new players, we finished in mid table in season 2021/22 followed by seventh place last season. Jon left in the summer and was replaced by Catalin Andrei and Steve Taylor. Chris Blammon took over in the autumn of 2023 as first team manager.

A big thank you....

Focus on.... BRISTOL TELEPHONES

Formed in 1948, Bristol Telephones were originally known as Bristol Post Office Telephones Football Club, as they were then part of the Post Office. Playing at Bristol Civil Service Club, they had to leave that pitch when BT was privatised under Maggie Thatcher. They then played at various grounds, until the overall social club purchased their current ground in 1984. Various improvements were undertaken but in 1994 the clubhouse, which was mostly wooden construction, was destroyed by fire. For the next season, Bristol Telephones, as we were now called, were able to borrow changing facilities from Cutters Friday, whose ground borders our own, until the current clubhouse was constructed. In recent years this has seen substantial improvements such that it is now considered one of the best clubs in the area. Telephones started life in the Bristol and Suburban League, being an ever present club in the ‘Premier’ Divisions since it’s formation, until our promotion to the Gloucestershire County League. Telephones were promoted to the Gloucestershire County League in season 2013/14 and became champions in 2016/17, allowing them to be promoted to the Toolstation Western League. This is our seventh season in the Toolstation Western League having finished safely in mid table last season following a disappointing start. John and his assistants made a huge impact when they arrived at Christmas 2022 and we are looking for that to continue this season with John looking to be pushing for promotion come April. John has recently decided to step aside from Managing and Josh Bruton has stepped up to the role of Manager with John reverting to Assistant. We are looking forward to Josh continuing the great work that has already been started. This season we will also be running an U18 floodlit team for the first time. We welcome Dave, Rob and the team to Telephones and look forward to their lads pushing for promotion to the first team in a couple of years. In terms of trophies, Phones were Gloucestershire County League Champions in 2016/17, Suburban Premier League Champions three times, the Premier Div 2 winners twice, and Bosley Cup Winners four times. We also won the Gloucester Junior Cup in 1975, and were Finalists in the Gloucestershire Senior Amateur Cup in 2012.
