I had the overwhelming joy of being at Memphis Grace EMC just a few weeks ago. It was Memorial Day weekend, and Pastor Ben Wilkins was kind enough to share his pulpit with me. Ben and Anne do an amazing job of leading and serving the congregation there, and God has been using them to bring revival and revitalization to that precious body.

Memphis is known for many things, including serving a prominent place in United States Civil Rights history, great southern food, such as ribs and BBQ, and for lively music and incredible musicians.

One of the things that is now a fixture on the calendar at Memphis Grace is a community outreach event they call BBQ & Soul Scores of people pass through the grounds during this annual event, and God has used it to both touch people with the Gospel, and to build the congregation. My visit had me there just one week before the big event on May 31st. My planning instincts must have been a little off when I set that up.

When Pastor Ben stepped into the role as lead pastor there several years ago, the church was small (quite small) and probably near closure, but the Lord had a different plan that required commitment, hard work, lots of prayer, and a congregation willing to change. And now it is a thriving, multi-generational, multi-ethnic church nearing 100 in attendance.

How does this kind of turnaround happen? First, it should be said that the Holy Spirit must always be in charge, and church growth is not a cookie-cutter, automatic formula. But there is no doubt that faith, humility, a willingness to try new things, and a genuine love for people are all key elements to revitalization.

Ben, and Grace church, have worked hard in doorto-door evangelism and outreach efforts canvassing area neighborhoods. A tool they have used is a tract by “Moments with the Book,” a ministry that will customize them with your own church name and address for an incredibly low price.

But having something printed isn’t the solution all by itself! Having a willing heart, and busy hands and feet to share the good news with neighbors is one of the keys.

Thanks, Pastor Ben and Anne, for your leadership and hard work, and thanks, Memphis Grace, for having welcoming arms!
