October 31, 2023 The scope and sequence of courses in the Haggard School of Ministry includes one unique class that is not primarily theology, history, or Biblical studies, though it contains all of those things in part. It is HI-101 “This is the EMC.” It is an introductory course to the history, doctrine, and structure of the Evangelical Methodist Church, and it is taught by the Cabinet of Superintendents. It is an expanded walk through the Discipline and a great opportunity for those new to the EMC (or anyone seeking more information) to get a top-down view of what it means to be a part of our nearly 80-year-old denomination steeped in the Wesleyan holiness tradition. The Superintendents teach it at least once a year, and that time has come. Before I share the specific details of date and time, and how to connect, please let me correct something I just recently wrote in my Kerusso article for November about it. I mentioned that anyone “18 years or older can take the class for $50.” While that is true for auditing any one of the other classes in the Haggard School, there is no charge for anyone taking “This is the EMC.” Sorry for the confusion! Because there are so many folks waiting to be able to take the course, the Superintendents are offering it at two different times. It is scheduled to be a three-hour class, with two optional times: one in the evening, and one during the day. The scheduled times are Thursday, November 9th, from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., and Friday, November 10th, from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. And if I wasn’t clear earlier, literally anyone in the EMC can take this class for free. It is required for all new EMC Credential holders, even for transferring Elders, and for everyone enrolled in the Haggard School, but it is open to all Evangelical Methodists for personal enrichment.
