Twenty-six years ago the late Jackie Spencer and husband Dr. A.N. Spencer unveiled their monumental gift to the world of performing arts in one of the more unexpected locales in America: the rural southeastern New Mexico mountain settlement of Alto, a bit north of the horse racing town of Ruidoso. Headlining with an eye-popping array of famous musicians, the black tie gala ceremony was attended by dignitaries, artists, swarms of journalists, and more than 500 first ome first ser e lu k atro s. he ele rated ift the stu i se e stor sparkling white jewel, the Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts.

Hailed as “a diamond in the ruff,” the $23-million, state-of-the-art performance hall was funded solely by Jackie, heir to a Wall Street fortune, who spent the bulk of her 78 years living and playing in rural Lincoln County, New Mexico. As a lifelong lover of performing arts, she made countless journeys with her husband, their many friends, or with her three children to more cosmopolitan areas to see grand scale stage productions. On occasion, she even sponsored chamber symphony appearances at private parties and county dance barns until her glorious vision of building a professional performing arts facility gained both focus and expediency. It took 15 years of planning and personal oversight to achieve, but once she selected architect Antoine Predock and contractors broke ground on 72-acres in Alto, the seven-story, 50,000 square foot facility – with an intimate 514 seats and 5,000 sq. ft. proscenium stage – was completed in a little over a year’s time. Finally, during a grand gala opening on October 3rd, 1997, the Spencers literally cut a red velvet ribbon and launched a truly transformative cultural experience for all of southeastern New Mexico and beyond.

Since its grand opening in 1997, the “roadhouse” theater has drawn people of all social persuasions to experience both big and intimate stage productions, the vast majority being professional national and international touring extravaganzas requiring the dynamic lighting, surround sound and stage technolo the S e er as s e ifi all desi ed to deli er. s the le e dary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, one of the theater’s debut performers de lared a kie s o rofit ift to us all as sim l N EFUL.”

Many smaller recitals and performances have also graced the stage, as have top-notch local and state-side productions, further fostering friendships and partnerships. Patrons entering the hall as strangers leave with a sense of connection, having collectively shared enriching experiences. People have fallen in love here and married, they’ve laughed, danced, and dreamed – all in synch with the magic unfolding on stage. Curtains close but the stories continue as patrons leave inspired – a gift within the gift that forever strengthens our community.

Over the course of 26 years, this mesa-top hall has played an i alua le role i the li es of hildre e reside ts a d lo time atro s a d has si ifi a tl e ha ed the o erall educational and economic health of the region. As a 501(c)(3) public charitable organization, the availability of the multi-milliondollar facility is possible because of show attendance and the continued generosity of theater contributors, donors, grants, sponsors, fundraising events and campaigns, and legacy gifts. Private rentals for parties, weddings and shows also play a im orta t art. o ether ith fis all res o si le ud eti a d o ersi ht these fu ds hel to e sure a ual a d future operations of the irreplaceable facility.

The Spencer continues to share Jackie’s ambitious goal of presenting an outstanding array of professional performing artists, receiving numerous prestigious awards in the process. In fact, the grand facility was an honored recipient of the 2021 New Mexico Governor’s Award For E elle e i the rts a ho or re iousl esto ed u o a kie for her unparalleled gift. As the seasons march by, advanced equipment updates and exterior/interior repairs/renovations are a must. The improvements are accomplished through active fundraising efforts and the generosity of patrons. Those interested in learning more about the ongoing repair work or donating to that fund, please contact the theater at 575.336.4800.

All of us at the theater – Trustees, Board of Directors, staff, volunteers – feel enormous gratitude for your support of the Spencer’s cultural mission, helping it grow in pace with the challenges of time. The show must go on and it always will, thanks to patrons and donors like you!

An emotive and exhilarating tale about human ingenuity and our natural resources. In Zephyr – A Whirlwind of Circus by Cirque Mechanics, audiences will witness the tug of war that exists between man and nature, in the name of progress.

Cirque Mechanics has designed and built a performance windmill to serve as the multi-functional mechanical centerpiece of our story. Mounted on a turntable, the windmill combines both modern and older more picturesque elements – with the transformation from one aspect to another providing a change of scenery in real time.

Inspired by a visit to a working windmill in central England, Zephyr (which means gentle breeze from the Greek god of the west wind Zephyrus) tells the story of Nigel, mill owner and operator, and his complicated relationship with wind, the atural resour e that o ers his our mill. is relia e o i d is tested a d i tur he is lured fuel i the ame of progress as his primary energy source. His choices cause elation and disruption, aptly represented by the community the mill serves as dynamic and lyrical circus acts. Nigel grapples with tough choices and unintended outcomes with humor and optimism, which lead to acceptance, coexistence and balance with wind, progress, and his community.

Cirque Mechanics, which calls Las Vegas home, was founded in 2004 by Boston native and German Wheel artist, Chris Lashua, after the success of his collaborative project with the Circus Center of San Francisco, Birdhouse Factory. Cirque Mechanics quickly established itself as a premiere American circus, with its unique approach to performance, inspiring storytelling, and innovative mechanical staging. Spectacle Magazine hailed it as “the greatest contribution to the American circus since Cirque du Soleil”.

Cirque Mechanics, although inspired by modern circus, fi ds its roots i the me ha i al a d its heart i the stories of American ingenuity. The shows, rooted in realism, display a raw quality rarely found in modern circus that makes their message timeless and relevant. The stories are wrapped in circus acrobatics, mechanical wonders, and a bit of clowning around. Cirque Mechanics applies these principles to their Events and Under Canvas divisions, bringing their brand of unique circus entertainment, awe, and amazement, to corporate and private clients, as well as families inside their orange and gray big top.

The troupe has created a series of extraordinary touring theatrical productions, Birdhouse Factory, Boom Town, Pedal Punk, the Orchestra Project, 42ft – A Menagerie of Mechanical Marvels, and for this season, Zephyr – A Whirlwind of Circus.

Spencer’s operating reserves & previous special project “ASK” funds provided $600,000 to these exterior construction costs. The Spencer utilized its foundation funds as collateral to create a line of credit (loan) for the remainder of the construction costs. This line of credit (loan) will need to be repaid.

Partnering with the Spencer since 1997, the R.D. Joan Dale Hubbard Foundation has provided a transportation grant that keeps school buses rolling from Lincoln County and Mescalero schools to the Spencer Theater, delivering thousands of children to the educational magic unfolding on the worldclass stage. This locally operated philanthropic foundation plays an invaluable roll in the programming of all Class Acts performances, because without safe, organized, and timely transportation of school children, shows would be delayed or difficult to schedule during school hours.

Separately, The Hubbard Foundation is the generous sponsor of a high-profile summer season performance event at the Spencer. The special Hubbard sponsored concerts, typically booked for late August, have further supported the theater’s efforts to provide the very best in performing arts for the betterment of the community.

A BOUTTHE S PENCER T HEATER

FREEPUBLICTOURS

Public tours of the facility are offered every Tuesday & Thursday at 10 a.m., except on holidays and performance days. Tour reservations can be made by calling (575) 336-4800. (Tours are weather permitting and subject to cancellation).

SPENCER THEATERPARKING

Valet cost is $5. A season valet pass is available f or purchase at the box office.

LATESEATING; BARAND FOOD SERVICE

Performances start on time; late seating disturbs other patrons. In some cases late seating may not be allowed, and is generally only permitted during applause.

Plan to arrive 30 minutes before showtime, allowing yourself ample time to visit coat check, restrooms, enjoy a beverage at the cash bar or to pre-order intermission drinks.

When buffets are offered in the lobby, the food and bar service starts two hours before the performance. Event menus are listed on the theater’s website and in the season brochure. Buffet tickets can be purchased at box office and online at spencertheater.com.

TICKETRETURNS

Tickets may not be refunded or exchanged. If you cannot attend a performance, please return your tickets to the Spencer Theater Box Office by mail, in person, or by emailing boxoffice@spencertheater.com with authorization to release your tickets with the seat location. If tickets are returned before the performance, 100% of the face value of your returned ticket cost is a charitable contribution to the Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.

HEALTH & SAFETY

The Spencer Theater follows New Mexico health and safety guidelines. If the state issues a mask mandate at any given time, the theater will require all patrons to adhere to the current guidelines. When masks are required, they must be worn at all times – before and during performances, except when eating or drinking.

* Please, if you are not feeling well or are experiencing COVID-19 related symptoms, stay home. We welcome you to join us again in the future. All patrons voluntarily assume exposure risk to COVID19 or any other infectious disease.

PHONES, CAMERAS, RECORDERS, • COURTESY!

Please do not bring cell phones, cameras, or any recording device into the auditorium. Due to multiple legal copyrights, licensing, contractual and policy issues the Spencer does not allow filming or photography during any show. Please leave cell phones and other noise-making devices with our staff at the coat check or turn them off. Please, enjoy the live experience, not the iPhone experience! Patron courtesy includes removing hats that may block the view of those seated behind you. Please consider removing yours before the show begins.

INFANTSANDCHILDREN

The Spencer Theater offers a number of performances for families and these are usually noted in our season brochure. Children under the age of 4 are not allowed in the auditorium. Children under the age of 12 may not be seated in the upper galleries or front row balcony.

GIFTCERTIFICATES

& GROUPRATES

Share the performing arts! Gift certificates are available at the box office in various denominations. For parties of 10 or more people, inquire about our group rates.

VOLUNTEERUSHERS

The staff of the Spencer Theater wishes to thank all of tonight’s volunteer ushers. Contact Fred and Cecile Kinnan at (575) 336-9157 if you would like to join the team of volunteer ushers.

GETINTOUCHWITHUS by calling the Spencer’s Box Office at (575)336-4800, or visiting our website at www.spencertheater.com. Theater personnel contact information is listed on the site.
