SPECIALIST INSIGHT It is not usual for the focus of any commentary to be on antique furniture given that the market has become increasingly selective in this field, but there is an interesting variety in this sale, consigned by private vendors from across the midlands and Wales.

Those worthy of note include lot 454, a painted Italian cassone dating from the 17th century and its decorative appeal is self-evident. Painted furniture has never fallen out of fashion and this cassone is appropriately painted with a classical scene, depicting the Roman myth of the priestess Tuccia.

Elsewhere there is an Iberian elbow chair (lot 438) and a Dutch marquetry table (lot 455) that is typically inlaid with a floral panel that is in the tradition of van Mekeren, but where the treatment is mannerist, a style popular at the end of the Renaissance.

Lot 434 is a good example of an 18th century Italian marquetry commode in French, Rococo form and then there are various French, Rococo style works, including a petite commode (lot 423). In sharp contrast lot 363, a German ‘Armada chest’ adds to the eclecticism of the sale. Neoclassicism is also well represented with a pair of Adam style painted elbow chairs (lot 428), indicating the breadth of styles represented in this sale.

In contrast to the above, much of which is polychrome decorated, or veneered with marquetry, there is also a complementary collection of English

furniture. The phrase ‘brown furniture’ is frequently used and almost always in a disparaging way but it is very misleading, as there are many exceptions and many different types of brown. The market has rejected average, dingy, lacklustre pieces, especially in poor condition, but well figured and proportioned pieces that are of good quality and make a statement are a different matter altogether. Lot 424 is one such example and ticks all of these boxes, in addition to having some showy additional features. Note the trouble that the cabinet maker has taken to match the veneers left and right on each drawer and the fact that each drawer has a central, vertical feather-banding that divides each panel.

Another good exception is lot 427 that not only combines good proportions and size with a great colour, despite being brown, but again has this wonderfully well figured and colourful veneer. The maker has gone to the trouble of matching the same quality veneer on the stiles and rails; very unusual and a mark of real quality. This has been complemented by a great design, which was undoubtedly

inspired by Thomas Chippendale’s ‘The Gentleman’s and Cabinet-Maker’s Director’, published in 1754, owing to the gilded brass Rococo style handles and the blind fretwork canted corners.

This piece will not only engender interest with collectors, but anyone that is looking for the wow factor. In short, both pieces would have been commissioned to grace grand homes in the 18th century. Clearly, they are not just serviceable storage units, but are show-stoppers designed and made to impress and nothing has changed, for they will continue to make a statement wherever they find a home.

The disparate array of furniture offered for sale shows that irrespective of style or form there should be something for everyone’s taste in this Christmas sale.

Vertumnus is a god of the seasons, gardens and fruit trees who was enamoured with Pomona, a beautiful wood nymph who dedicated herself to cultivating her orchard and rejecting all potential suitors. He disguised himself as an old woman in order to gain entry to Pomona's orchard and sought to convince her to choose the youthful and handsome deity Vertumnus. He then transforms and reveals himself in his true form to woo her.

A RARE, MONUMENTALLY LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE MAW & CO CHARGER

circa 1880 centrally painted with a lion's mask below a flaming urn, surrounded by seeded orange fruit and a wave exterior border, impressed 'MAW & CO / BROSELEY', 92cm diameter (stapled repair) Notes: It is likely that this charger was produced for one of the many exhibitions in which Maw & Co participated in during the late 19th century. For comparison, the Ironbridge Gorge Museum owns one other large charger, which was created for the Exposition Universelle of 1889 as a showcase of the various glazes and paints. Another charger, at a slightly smaller 71cm diameter, was exhibited in the earlier 1851 Great Exhibition and remains in private hands today. By family repute, this charger, and another (whereabouts currently unknown) were rescued by workers from the Maw & Co factory upon its closure.

Given the scarcity of works of this size by Maw & Co, it is, therefore, possible that the charger in this lot was one of those rescued. The further detail on this lot was provided by the kind generosity of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Collection Trust. £200 - £300

Albert E Bailey (British 19th Century) was a British painter predominantly known for his idyllic landscapes and scenes draped in evening light. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1890 onwards.

Frank Bramley (British 1857-1915). Was a British genre and portrait painter and a member of the Newlyn School together with Stanhope Forbes and Henry Tuke. His style combined realism with en plein air painting of the landscape. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1911 and was a founder member of the New English Art Club.

C

Thomas Sidney Cooper (British 1803-1902). Cooper was a British 19th century painter best known for his animal paintings, predominantly of sheep and cattle. He was heavily influenced by 17th Century Netherlandish paintings and was a close friend of Belgian painter Verboeckhoven and British artist Sir Thomas Lawrence.

Teresa Davis (British Contemporary), Davis is a contemporary wildlife and sporting artist based in Somerset. She is also a photographer, capturing her own subjects for painting, working in a predominantly realist style.

Silvia Duran (Spanish Contemporary): Duran is a Spanish Contemporary artist from Barcelona. She studied at the Bellas Artes de Barcelona and found inspiration in the film Born Free, following which she has almost exclusively focused upon painting Big Cats, travelling around the world to observe and study them. She has produced paintings on behalf of the WWF, Born Free Foundation and Kora Trust.

Edward Henry Eugene Fletcher (British 1851-1945) Fletcher was the son of a Bengal river pilot, the family moved back to London when he was young and he studied at the Chelsea Art School. He sometimes also painted under the name John Hayes and was best known for his marine paintings. Fletcher moved to Blackheath following his marriage, running an auction house before a serious illness aged 40 spurred him to dedicate himself to being a professional painter.

Edward Robert Hughes RWS (British 1851-1914) was a London based historical genre painter. He studied with artist Holmen Hunt and his uncle Arthur Hughes, exhibiting at the Royal Academy 1870-1898. His work was predominantly Romantic style genre subjects often inspired by contemporary novels

L

Auguste Lançon (French 1836-1885) was a French artist known for his etchings of military scenes and animals. During the Franco-Prussian war 1870-1871 he was a sargeant of a batallion and was captured, spending six months as a prisoner of war. He created a series of 70 etchings based on his experience of the conflict and exposing the horrors of armed conflict.

John Leech (British 1817-1864) was a Victorian illustrator and cariacaturist. He worked mostly in pen and ink, sometimes creating pieces in watercolour. His first published contribution was in Punch in 1847. His witty depictions focused upon general scenes of Victorian life.

Lawrence Stephen Lowry (British Northern School 1887-1976). Lowry was a Northern artist heavily associated with his hometown of Salford and most famous for his industrial and factory scenes, although he did also paint landscapes and portraits, particularly in later years. His palette was restricted to just five colours: white, black, vermilion red, Prussian blue and yellow ochre.

Alfred Montague (British fl. 1832-1883) Montague was a British 19th century painter best known for his town and coastal landscapes, often being compared with Henry Schafer. He travelled extensively throughout England, France and The Netherlands to paint. Between 1836-1870 he exhibited 156 works at the Royal Academy.

George William Mote (British 1832-1909): was a British landscape painter who began his career as gardener and caretaker to Sir Thomas Phillips in Worcestershire, whose house and grounds feature in some of Mote’s early work. He enjoyed a technique of painting scenes through an open window. Mote exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1857-1873 and was best known for his scenes around Surrey, Sussex and Wales.

Manouchehr Niazi (Iranian School b.1936) Niazi is an Iranian post-war contemporary artist best known for his vibrant, colourful and romantic landscapes. He is especially interested in movement as the essential element in his work, seeking to combine it with rhythm and colour

O

Wilfred Owen (British 1898-1918) was a British poet and soldier from Oswestry, Shropshire. He is famous for his haunting war poetry which focused upon the horrors of the trenches and conditions during World War One which were in stark contrast to the contemporary public perception of the war effort. Owen was killed in action during the crossing of the Sambre-Oise Canal, just one week before the signing of the Armistace.

Otto Pilny (Swiss 1866-1936), Pilny was a Swiss painter who specialised in Orientalist genre paintings based on his travels through the Middle East and North Africa, often focusing upon desert landscapes and depictions of dancing women and Bedouin figures.

R

Philip Reinagle (British 1749-1833) Reinagle was a British painter best known for his depictions of animals, landscapes and botanical scenes.

He began his career as a portrait painter, later developing his preference and focusing upon animal and sporting works. He was a member of the Royal Academy and exhibited there between 1773-1827.

S

George Vernon Stokes (British 1873-1954). Vernon Stokes was a landscape and animal painter from Carlisle, working in oil, watercolour and pastel.

Denby Sweeting (British 1936-2020) was a British realist painter who is best known for his depictions of British domestic animals and floral studies, painting from his studio in North Wales. Sweeting was born in Bristol but spent much of his early life in London, being apprenticed as a cabinet maker. He made a career for himself in painting and picture restoration and was a member of the International Institute for Conservation of Historic Works of Art. In 1975 he relocated to North Wales and set up his own studio there. Sweeting was a founder member of the Federation of British Artists and regularly exhibited at the RBSA during the 1980s.

Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe R.A. OBE (1901-1979) was an internationally celebrated wildlife artist. Following the completion of his studies at the Royal College of Art he relocated to Anglesea in 1947 where he remained for the rest of his life. He used a variety of mediums in his work including watercolour, etching, engraving and oil. Tunnicliffe is recognised for his accurate and naturalistic portrayal of animals and birds and the lively way he represented his subjects engaging with their surrounding habitats. He was a regular exhibitor with the Royal Academy, but released very few of his works for gallery sale, believing his art was best suited to private homes. Tunnicliffe rejected the modern urban art scene of his time in favour of immersing himself within the natural world, insisting upon painting studies direct from nature.

V

Arthur Langley Vernon (British fl. 1871-1922) was a British painter known for his genre scenes, often with figures wearing period costumes in romantic scenes and interiors. He exhibited at the Royal academy between 1873-1897.

W

Sir John Kyffin Williams (1918-2006) was a Welsh artist and one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th Century. He was encouraged to take up painting by his doctor in light of his epilepsy diagnosis. Williams is best known for his signature contrasting sombre palette, depicting Welsh landscapes and especially cottages, characteristically using a palette kniffe and thick impasto paint. He did also undertake a number of portraits, being awarded the 1963 Winston Churchill fellowship to record the life of the Welsh in Patagonia, an experience who recorded in his book A Wider Sky. A highly celebrated artist in his own time, he was awarded numerous accolades including an OBE 1982, Knighthood 1999, an honorary Masters Degree from the University of Wales, President of the Royal Cambrian Academy, elected to the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists.

Owen Williams (British Contemporary). Williams is a contemporary wildlife and sporting artist, working predominantly in oils. He is a member of the Redspot artist group.

Edmund Morison Wimperis (British 1835-1900). Wimperis was an artist born in Chester, best known for his landscapes. He was influenced by artists such as Thomas Collier and David Cox, being fond of depicting large, spacious skies with use of shadowing allowing him to explore his favoured scenes with bleak and windswept moorlands.

(d)All conditions, notices, descriptions, statements and other matters in the catalogue and elsewhere concerning any lot are subject to any statements modifying or affecting the same made by the Auctioneer from the rostrum prior to any bid being accepted for the lot.

4. Rescission. Notwithstanding any other terms of these Conditions, if within fourteen days after the sale Halls Holdings Limited have received from the buyer of any lot notice in writing that in his view the lot is a deliberate forgery and within twenty-one days after such notification the buyer returns the same to Halls Holdings Limited in the same condition as at the time of sale and by producing evidence, the burden of proof to be upon the buyer, satisfies Halls Holdings Limited that considered in the light of the entry in the catalogue the lot is a deliberate forgery then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price of the same refunded. The seller and the buyer agree to be bound by Halls Holdings Limited’s decision 5. Default. Halls Holdings Limited disclaim responsibility for default by either the buyer or the seller because they act as agents for the seller only and therefore do not pay out to the seller until payment is received from the buyer. Instructions given by telephone are accepted at the sender’s risk and must be confirmed in writing forthwith.

6. In the event of a sale by private treaty both the seller and the buyer agree to be bound by the general and any Special Conditions of Sale.

7. Third Party Liability. Every person on Halls Holdings Limited’s premises at any time shall be deemed to be there at his own risk.

He shall have no claim against Halls Holdings Limited in respect of any accident which may occur or injury, damage or loss howsoever caused, save in so far as the injury, damage or loss shall be caused by the direct negligence of Halls Holdings Limited’s employees

CONDITIONS OF SALE APPLICABLE TO BUYERS 8. Inspection. Opportunity is given for inspection and each buyer by making a bid for a lot acknowledges that he has satisfied himself fully before bidding by inspection or otherwise to all the Sale Conditions, the physical condition of and description of the lot including but not restricted to whether the lot is damaged or has been repaired or restored.

9. Property and Risk. The legal title in a lot shall not pass to the buyer until the lot(s) has been paid for in full and the Auctioneers shall be entitled to a lien on any lot sold until the purchase price (as defined in 10 below) is paid in full but each lot is at the sole risk of the buyer from the fall of the hammer. Each buyer shall forthwith give his full names and permanent address and if called upon to do so by the Auctioneer shall forthwith pay Halls Holdings Limited such proportion of the purchase price as the Auctioneer may require. If the buyer fails to do so, the lot may at the auctioneer’s sole direction be put up again and re-sold.

10.Every bidder shall be deemed to act as principal unless there is in force a written acknowledgement by Halls Holdings Limited that he acts as agent on behalf of a named principal.

11.Removal of goods. (a)No purchase shall be claimed or removed until the sale has been concluded. All lots shall be paid for and removed at the buyer’s risk and expense by the end of the second working day after the sale, failing which the Auctioneer shall not be responsible if the same are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed, and all lots not so removed shall remain at the risk of the buyer and subject to a warehousing charge. If they are not paid for and removed within seven days of the sale the Auctioneer may re-sell them by auction or privately without notice to the buyer. Any liability which there may be on the part of the Auctioneer in respect of any loss shall be restricted to a maximum of the price paid by the buyer of the lot. (b) In the event of any failure of the buyer to comply with any of the above conditions the damages recoverable by the seller or the Auctioneers from the defaulter shall include any loss arising on any re-sale of the lots, together with the charges and expenses in respect of both sales, and together with interest at 2% above Handelsbanken Base Rate upon the price of any lot which has not been paid for within forty-eight hours of the sale, and any money deposited in part payment shall be held by the Auctioneers on account of any liability of the defaulter to them or to the seller.

We accept cash up to €10,000, debit cards, bank transfers and personal cheques. We apologise we do not accept credit cards.

Cheques drawn by third parties, whether in the auctioneer’s favour or requiring endorsement, cannot be accepted.

12. Purchase Price. The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium at the stated rates on the hammer price of 20%. under the Auctioneers’ Margin Scheme operated by HM Customs & Excise, the premium does attract VAT as an addition to the stated premium rate.

13. Commission to Bid. Halls Holdings Limited will execute bids on behalf of intending buyers unable to attend the sale at no charge. Halls Holdings Limited undertake to purchase lots as cheaply as allowed by other bids and reserves. Bids must be submitted in writing and whilst every care is taken in carrying out instructions Halls Holdings Limited cannot be held responsible for errors or omissions made in carrying out such bids.

14. Lots on which Value Added Tax is payable on or included in the hammer price are indicated in the catalogue or description sheet with a sign. VAT is payable on or included in the hammer price of such lots at the rates prevailing on the day of the auction.

CONDITIONS OF SALE APPLICABLE TO SELLERS 15. The seller authorises Halls Holdings Limited to deduct commission at the published rate and to retain the buyer’s premium of 20% plus VAT. The seller agrees to pay all special advertising charges and illustration charges (see 24) insomuch that they are reasonable. Scale of Commission - Halls Business tariff card available at all Halls offices and salerooms on request.

16. Value Added Tax. A seller who sends for sale by auction any chattel(s) which is an asset of his business must disclose to the Auctioneer whether or not he is a registered person for Value Added Tax purposes and, if so, his registered number and whether or not he intends to operate the Dealer Margin Scheme covering works of art, etc. This information must be supplied to the Auctioneer on or prior to delivery of the goods.

17. Instructions. All goods delivered to the Auctioneers’ premises will be deemed to be delivered for Sale by Auction and will be catalogued and sold accordingly unless special instructions are recorded on the receipt.

18. Reserves. Halls Holdings Limited will be pleased to advise on suitable protective reserves but if no reserves have been received prior to the day of the Sale, the lot will be sold without reserve or at the discretion of the Auctioneer. Reserves must be confirmed in writing or notified on the receipt at the time of delivery.

19. Indemnity. Vendors shall indemnify Halls Holding Ltd against any claims in connection with goods sold by Halls on the vendor’s behalf.

20. Collections. The Auctioneers do not themselves undertake the collection of goods but acting expressly as Agents, they will if required, instruct or recommend a carrier on the vendor’s behalf for which there will be a charge.

21. Withdrawals. Where a seller cancels instructions for sale, or where a lot is withdrawn for any reason other than misattribution or authenticity, Halls Holdings Limited reserves the right to charge a fee equal to 10% plus VAT of the reserve price of the lot, or where no reserve has been fixed, Halls’ lower estimate of the item(s) withdrawn, together with any expenses incurred in relation to the item(s) withdrawn.

22. Insurance. Halls Fine Art are not regulated by the FSA for the provision of insurance to its clients. However, Halls Holdings Limited, for its own protection insures property consigned to it at bottom pre sale estimate, unless the item has been sold, in which instance property is insured at the hammer price for loss, occasioned as a result of theft, fire or negligence whilst in their custody or control.

23. Warranty of Title. The seller warrants to Halls Holdings Limited and to the buyer that he is the true owner of the property or is properly authorised to sell the property by the true owner and is able to transfer good and marketable title to the property free from any third party claims.

24. Photography. Vendors give Halls Holdings Limited the right to photograph and illustrate and promote any lot placed with them for sale and to use such photographs and illustrations at any time at their discretion, whether or not in connection with the auction.

25. Electrical and Mechanical goods. The seller and consignor of

electrical or mechanical goods warrants and undertakes to Halls Holdings Limited that on the date received by Halls that the same are safe if reasonably used for the purpose for which they were designed and free from any defect not obvious on external inspection which could prove dangerous to human life or health, and will indemnify Halls its servants and agents against any loss or damage suffered by any breach of the above warranty.

26. Agency. The Auctioneers act throughout as Agents only and are not responsible for any default by the buyer. Halls Holdings Limited disclaim liability for paying the vendor until they have received settlement from the purchaser.

27. Warehousing. The Auctioneers exempt themselves from any liability to goods delivered to their salerooms without sufficient sale instructions,and reserve the right to make a warehousing charge in this respect. A similar warehousing charge will be applicable for goods left on their premises after they have requested the vendor to remove them.

28. Unsold goods. unsold goods must be collected if they are not to be re-offered within 14 days following receipt of any after sale advice slip. Halls Holdings Limited reserve the right to sell by auction on behalf of the vendor without reserve any items after this period.

29. Important Notice. Any monies held on your behalf will be held in a Clients Bank Account at the Handelsbanken, Shrewsbury and will be protected by the FSA. Furthermore for your protection, Halls adhere to the Clients Monies rules of the RICS. Any incidental interest earned on such monies will be retained by Halls as part of their terms of engagements, and by instructing Halls to act on your behalf, you are agreeing to and endorsing that course of action.

RICS operates a Clients’ Money Protection Scheme (CMPS). This scheme, of last resort, covers direct loss of clients’ money as a result of misappropriation (or equivalent) by a RICS Regulated Firm, up to a £50000 limit. The CMPS nor Halls will provide protection for the failure of a bank. But protection for bank failure is provided

by The Financial Services Compensation Scheme up to a £50000 limit. A copy of Halls complaints procedure is on display at all Halls offices, and a copy will be made available to you on request.

30. Online Bidding. Halls Holdings Limited offer an online bidding service via the-saleroom.com for bidders who cannot attend the sale. In completing the bidder registration on www.the-saleroom. com and providing your card details and unless alternative arrangements are agreed with Halls Holdings Limited you: 1. Authorise Halls Holdings Limited, if they so wish, to charge the card given in part or full payment, including all fees, for items successfully purchased in the auction via the-saleroom.com, and 2. Confirm that you are authorised to provide these card details to Halls Holdings Limited through www.thesaleroom.com. We do not accept credit cards.

BEFORE THE AUCTION What is buyer’s premium?

All UK auctioneers charge a premium in addition to the hammer price.

Halls’ Buyer’s Premium is 20% plus VAT for the first £500,000 and 12% above £500,000 per lot Can I ask questions about lots before the auction?

You can ask for further details and extra images about any lots in our sales and this is especially important if you cannot attend to view the lot in person. We don’t detail condition in our catalogue descriptions and so recommend asking for a condition report and additional images. Our reports provide a general guide to the condition of a lot but are not a forensic examination and so a physical inspection by you or an appointed agent is ideal.

To request a condition report go to the lot of interest on our website and click on the 'Request a condition report' button or email adminfineart@hallsgb.com. Condition reports are always given in writing.

Buying ivory Items made of or containing elements of elephant ivory are subject to trading bans in the USA and China among other jurisdictions, and are subject to CITES regulations in the UK. If you are bidding outside the UK, please ensure you are aware of your country’s regulations BEFORE bidding. We cannot rescind a sale if you are unable to ship ivory to your country

Please note that a storage and handling charge of £5.00 + VAT per lot, per day, will be levied if after a period of seven days from the sale date, items remain uncollected.

Halls Holdings Ltd. reserve the right to re-sell any items that have been paid for where appropriate after a period of fourteen days. The original buyer will be charged storage, full commission and insurance and the net proceeds remitted to them.
