We've interviewed three veterans who call Hall & Prior home, and I hope you'll find their stories and memories of serving in the military as inspiring as I did.

We also celebrate the joy of motherhood to coincide with Mother's Day on May 10, with some lovely snaps of team members who have welcomed little bundles of joy recently. This also explains my photo above – I recently became a very proud grandma to little Florry who has already brought so much joy to our family.

You'll find plenty of other stories and photos to entertain you too, as we share the rich and colourful events many of our homes have enjoyed over the past few months. From WA Police horses visiting Karingal Green, to Harmony Day in NSW, there's plenty of reasons to keep those pages turning in this issue.

A

s we move into the cooler months, it is a time for both reflection and anticipation for the exciting growth occurring across our organisation.

From the picturesque shores of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, to Grafton in northern New South Wales, our commitment to world class care remains at the heart of everything we do.

On 1 April, we celebrated a major milestone: 12 months since Hall & Prior acquired Blue Haven Bonaira in Kiama.

Looking back on this first year, I am incredibly proud of the improvements we have implemented and the way our team has been embraced by the local community. Highlights from the past year, such as our spectacular Winter Ball and our strengthened bonds with local groups, have made this transition a joy. We have seen some amazing results over this past 12 months, with tangible improvements made across care and resident satisfaction, whilst at the same time ensuring a financially sustainable service. The warm acceptance we have received from the people of Kiama is deeply appreciated, and we remain dedicated to enhancing the lives of those in our care for many years to come.

This issue also features several significant events on our national calendar: Easter, Harmony Day, ANZAC Day and Mother’s Day. Easter provided a wonderful opportunity for our homes to host family gatherings and enjoy some well-deserved festivities, while for Mother’s Day, we have featured members of staff who have welcomed babies into the world in recent weeks.

ANZAC Day remains a deeply moving time for us, and I am looking forward to attending some of the services our homes hold on and around April 25. I do hope you enjoy reading the stories of some of the veterans we are honoured to care for - at Blue Haven Bonaira (Harold West OAM) and Windsor Park (Philip Lear and Jimmy Sharma). As an organisation, we take great pride in standing alongside our veteran residents to pay our respects and remember the sacrifices made for our freedom.

WA Premier pays Wycombe Grove a return visit As one of the first visitors to our first Time to Think facility in High Wycombe, WA Premier Roger Cook returned a few months later to check in on the innovative approach to giving elders a taste of aged care after a stay in hospital.

A

nation-leading initiative aimed at giving older Western Australians the space and time to make informed decisions about their future care and living arrangements goes from strength to strength at Wycombe Grove in High Wycombe.

Since its launch in May 2025, the program has assisted several hundred older Western Australians leave hospital sooner, offering a discharge pathway which gives them extra time to consider their long-term care options.

Last August, Mr Cook and his ministers visited Wycombe Grove during its opening week, meeting the very first residents and taking a look around the facility.

“Our short-term aged care beds are helping people leave hospital,” he said. “This frees up hospital beds and takes pressure off our EDs while giving people time and space to consider their longterm care options.”

Fast forward to March 2026, and Mr Cook paid Wycombe Grove a return visit, and was thrilled to see the thriving facility, now with 22 beds available. Mr Cook met current residents and staff and joined in a high tea held in his honour.

Premier Cook thanked Hall & Prior for their commitment to the Time to Think model of care, showing the benefits to both the individual and the hospital system by having a proactive, discharge-focused model of care in place.

Natasha Bamber, Wycombe Grove’s Executive Director, was very pleased to welcome the Premier back to the home, which shares some amenities with nearby Karingal Green.

“It was lovely to show Mr Cook around Wycombe Grove again and demonstrate how effectively the Time to Think initiative is working in real time.”

Wycombe Grove now has 17 Time to Think beds with five Transition Care beds.

Police horses pay a visit to Karingal Green A

unique opportunity to meet and greet some of WA Police’s most endearing four-legged officers was a special treat for the residents of Karingal Green.

The sound of horses' hooves on the pathway around Karingal Green was an unexpected addition to an ordinary Tuesday in April.

Residents enjoyed a warm and engaging visit from the WA Police Force Mounted Section, as Constable Amber and Chantelle brought along their impressive beautifully groomed fourlegged partners for a special education session.

Sensory tasting sessions unveil new tastes for homes Fresh Fields and Hall & Prior’s Nutrition team rolled out some new winter menus for residents, with positive results across the board.

n late March, the chefs at Fresh Fields, together with our Nutrition Team, hosted an engaging Sensory Tasting event across multiple facilities.

This initiative provided residents with the opportunity to preview and share feedback on the upcoming seasonal menu, ahead of its scheduled launch.

Each site welcomed 15 to 20 residents, creating a vibrant and interactive atmosphere filled with lively discussion, enthusiasm, and, of course, delicious food. The facilities involved included Freshwater Bay, Mosman Park, Agmaroy, Leighton, Windsor Park, Kensington Park, Mertome,

Belmont, St Luke’s, Hamersley, Tuohy, and Concorde. These locations were selected to ensure feedback was gathered from a broad and diverse resident group.

Throughout the week, residents sampled six new dishes, carefully developed to balance flavour, comfort, and nutritional requirements.

Menu highlights included a velvety cheesy cauliflower soup, tender beef and chorizo casserole, crumbed chicken topper, mac and cheese bites, and the decadent KitKat mousse dessert.

Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with residents

commenting on the taste, presentation, and overall appeal of the dishes. Common responses such as “Yummy,” “Beautiful,” “Perfect,” and “Good flavour” captured the overall sentiment and confirmed that the menu has already resonated strongly with residents.

As reflected in the photos, residents thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and their smiles and engagement say it all.

More than just a food preview, the sensory tasting allowed residents to actively contribute to their dining experience. This aligns with Fresh Fields’ commitment to providing meals that not only meet nutritional standards, but also deliver enjoyment, variety, and comfort. The valuable feedback collected will be used to further refine the final menu.

At Fresh Fields, we believe food plays a vital role in bringing people together, supporting wellbeing, and fostering a sense of belonging.

Events such as these tastings ensure residents feel heard, involved, and valued, not just as diners, but as partners in menu development.

We look forward to unveiling the full winter 2026/27 menu later this year and to creating even more memorable dining moments for our residents.

LISA DELAURENTIS

Hamersley and St Lukes Aged Care Homes

W

e’re very pleased to introduce Lisa, who has joined our team as an aged care on-site pharmacist. Lisa brings a strong commitment to resident safety, personalised care, and a genuine passion for improving quality of life through thoughtful medication management.

Outside of work, Lisa loves to stay active.

You’ll often find her swimming laps in preparation for her next ocean swim, or running along the coast or local trails as she works towards a new personal challenge. Lisa also enjoys spending time with family and friends and is lucky enough to travel to Italy most Septembers to visit relatives. A selfconfessed coffee lover, she’s always on the lookout for a great café – whether to enjoy good company or a quiet moment on her own.

In her role as an aged care pharmacist, Lisa helps ensure residents are prescribed the safest and most appropriate medications.

She reviews medicines for interactions and side effects, identifies and stops unnecessary or potentially harmful medications, and suggests safer medication or non-medication alternatives where appropriate. Lisa works closely with doctors, nurses, and care teams to optimise treatment, reduce chemical restraint, prevent falls, and support overall wellbeing.

She also contributes to medication safety through audits and staff education, and plays an important role in palliative care, ensuring medications focus on comfort, dignity, and quality of life.

Lisa is always happy to support residents and families by explaining why medications are used, what benefits and side effects to expect, and answering any questions or concerns.

She collaborates with the healthcare team to simplify and optimise medication regimes so they align with each resident’s goals, comfort, and wishes.

What Lisa loves most about being a pharmacist is the ability to make a real difference in people’s lives. Building relationships, advocating for residents, and working alongside healthcare teams to deliver care that is personalised, meaningful, and compassionate is what she finds most rewarding.

Lisa also shares that she feels inspired every day by the dedication of our nurses, care staff, and allied health professionals, all working together with the same goal - to enhance resident comfort, dignity, and care.

From Space to Place Introducing ATOSE (Assessment Tool for Occupational and Social Engagement) in our care homes supports life, not just care.

E

very aged care home is much more than a building. It is a place where people live their everyday lives - a place where routines and activities, relationships, and moments of connection shape how it feels to belong.

For this reason, it’s important to consider how every resident’s wellbeing is supported through everyday experiences, including how people spend their time and the extent to which they feel a sense of belonging, connection, and support each day.

This year, our organisation has taken part in an exciting new pilot introducing the Assessment Tool for Occupational and Social Engagement (ATOSE), developed and led by the ECU ATOSE Hub, and funded by the School of Medical and Health Sciences at Edith Cowan University.

This work represents an important step forward in strengthening evidencebased, person-centred care.

What is the ATOSE? The ATOSE is a practical, research-informed assessment tool designed to support aged care services to better understand how residents engage in everyday life.

Rather than focusing only on scheduled activities or the physical design of buildings, the ATOSE looks closely at how shared spaces are used and

how daily routines support, or limit, residents’ social interaction and opportunities to do things together.

This tool enables occupational therapists to observe patterns of interaction and engagement, identify strengths, and highlight opportunities to improve how residents experience their day.

“It is not just the design of a space that matters - it is how that space is used.”

work closely with care staff to understand what is working well and where small changes could make a difference.

Early feedback from participating therapists highlights increased confidence, renewed enthusiasm, and a stronger ability to advocate for residents’ everyday experiences, not just their clinical needs.

Why engagement matters Feeling connected, having opportunities to contribute, and maintaining a sense of identity all play a vital role in quality of life in later years. The ATOSE supports care teams to notice these moments and consider how care practices, environments, and daily routines shape residents’ experiences - often in subtle but meaningful ways.

One therapist reflected that, the “ATOSE helps turn values like dignity and connection into everyday practice.”

“Meaningful engagement is about everyday life, not just organised activities.”

We look forward to sharing more as the ATOSE journey continues.

The pilot: Building skills within our teams As part of the pilot,12 occupational therapists across our Perth-region homes took part in specialised ATOSE training facilitated by the ECU ATOSE Hub. The training supports therapists to assess residents’ engagement in a structured and meaningful way.

The embodiment of the ANZAC spirit At 103 years old, Harold West OAM carries with him more than a century of memories. His life has been shaped by war, by family and by a deep commitment to serving his community. Today, as a resident at Blue Haven Bonaira Aged Care Home in NSW, Harold reflects on those experiences with the quiet humility that has defined him throughout his life.

W

hen Harold West speaks about his time in the war, he does not dwell on heroism.

Instead, he tells the story of a young man who simply answered his country’s call.

Harold was just 18-year old when he was conscripted into the Australian Army during the Second World War. At the time, he had already begun studying to become an accountant and imagined a very different future ahead of him.

Like many young Australians of his generation, Harold set aside his plans and was sent to what was then New Guinea, the eastern half of the island that is today the independent nation of Papua New Guinea. There, Australian forces fought a long and difficult campaign against the Japanese in dense jungle and

harsh conditions. Harold still remembers arriving under the cover of darkness.

“We were on an old ship and they dropped us off in the middle of the night on a beach,” he recalls. “We were in the bush straight away.”

For the next four years, the jungle would become home. The conditions were relentless. “It was very hot and sweaty from the moment you woke up,” he says.

During the war, Harold served as a wireless operator, a role that carried significant responsibility. His job was to maintain vital communications between units, no small task in the dense jungle terrain and unpredictable conditions of New Guinea.

Working within a unit of around 120 men, Harold was responsible not only 11

“We boarded a boat and sailed down the coast,” he says. “When we sailed into Sydney Harbour, we were welcomed with tears, water cannons and all sorts of celebrations. It was great to get that greeting, especially after being away for so long.”

Returning home after the war, Harold focused on rebuilding the life that had been put on hold during those four years of service. He returned to his studies and completed his qualifications as a Certified Practising Accountant. In 1949, Harold married Eunice, and together they raised three daughters.

Over the decades, their family has grown to include seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, each generation adding to the legacy Harold and Eunice began together.

for keeping communication lines open but also for handling administration and maintaining connections between soldiers and their families back home.

Life in the jungle demanded resilience and adaptability.

Like many soldiers, Harold remembers the constant uncertainty that defined daily life during the war.

Harold also spent significant time on Horn Island, near Cape York Peninsula, with the 17th Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers, building an airstrip, dam and deepwater jetty in support of the Australian war effort. Much of this infrastructure remains today as a lasting legacy.

“Just getting by day by day was no easy task,” he says.

“You couldn’t be certain what would happen or where you were in relation to the other side. But you get used to it.

When the war finally came to an end, Harold remembers being in Wewak in northern New Guinea. The long journey home remains one of his most vivid memories.

Harold’s commitment to service did not end when the war did. For many years he remained actively involved in his community, serving approximately 20 years as an elected representative for Baulkham Hills Shire Council and with RSL Australia, dedicating decades to supporting fellow veterans.

In recognition of his longstanding commitment to community service, Harold was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2007, an honour he still speaks about with characteristic modesty.

“Apparently I did the right thing at the right time,” he says humbly.

“I’m very appreciative and quite honoured.”

He has also received a Meritorious Service Award from the RSL, recognising an extraordinary 75 years of service to the organisation.

Today, Harold’s greatest pride remains the life he built with his family.

LOCAL HERO: Harold West OAM served in the unpredictable conditions of New Guinea as a conscripted 18year old.

“My beautiful daughters, my great family and serving my community,” he says. “I also don’t regret my time in the war.”

For Harold, ANZAC Day continues to hold deep meaning. It is a day of remembrance, reflection and national unity.

The Kokoda Campaign (1942) remains one of the most significant and defining chapters in Australia’s wartime history.

Fought along the narrow and rugged Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea, the campaign saw Australian troops face some of the most challenging conditions of the Second World War. Dense jungle, steep mountain ranges, tropical heat and relentless rain made every step physically demanding.

Supplies were limited, disease was widespread, and the constant uncertainty of enemy movement added to the strain.

“It means a great deal to me,” he says. “The country gets involved and you feel like you are part of a big movement that has some effect on world affairs.”

With many of his wartime comrades now gone, the day has become even more reflective.

“Most of the compatriots are no longer with us,” he says quietly. “That’s what happens. Time marches on.”

If he could share one message with Australians this ANZAC Day, Harold says it would be about unity.

“It was a time of national unity and national action,” he reflects. “Being able to unite as one is a big message for us to carry forward.”

At its closest point, Japanese forces advanced to within just 40 kilometres of Port Moresby - a strategically important location. Had it fallen, Australia itself may have been placed under greater threat. The determination of Australian soldiers to hold the line and push back the advance was critical in turning the tide of the campaign.

For many who served, Kokoda was not defined by largescale battles alone, but by endurance - the daily effort to keep moving forward under extraordinarily difficult conditions.

Soldiers carried heavy packs across treacherous terrain, often exhausted and unwell, yet pushed on out of a strong sense of duty to one another.

An important and enduring part of the Kokoda story is

the role of local Papua New Guineans.

These men provided vital support to Australian troops, carrying the wounded through the jungle to safety and offering care, strength and companionship along the way. Their contribution remains a powerful example of compassion and shared humanity in the midst of war.

Today, the Kokoda Campaign is remembered not only for its strategic importance, but for the resilience, courage and mateship shown by those who were there. It continues to hold a special place in Australia’s national story a reminder of the strength found in unity, perseverance and the enduring spirit of those who served.

A talent for talking - and listening

Windsor Park resident and veteran Philip Lear joined the Australian Navy when he was just 15, a decision which would see him serve aboard the ‘Vung Tau Ferry’, taking young troops to serve in the jungles of Vietnam. By GABI MILLS

he flight deck of HMAS Sydney (III) was never quiet.

In the early 1970s, as the sun dipped toward the horizon of the South China Sea, the ship felt less like a decommissioned aircraft carrier and more like a floating city of transit.

To the world, she was the “Vung Tau Ferry,” the steel backbone of Australia’s commitment to Vietnam. But to a young sailor serving as the Captain’s Steward, she was a place of polished brass, highstakes logistics, and the heavy, quiet eyes of the “Nashos.”

Serving in the Captain’s quarters offered a unique

vantage point for Philip Lear, then only 18, and fresh from his training stint aboard HMAS Cerberus, located 70km from Melbourne.

While the thousands of National Servicemen below decks grappled with the humid heat of the mess squares, the Captain’s Steward moved between two worlds. One moment, he was ensuring the Captain’s coffee was exactly right as the ship navigated the escort screen of RAN destroyers; the next, he was looking out over a flight deck crowded not with Skyhawks, but with Land Rovers, heavy trucks, and the restless young

men who would soon drive them into the jungle.

For somebody like Philip, who credits his beloved mother Gwen as a key influence on his life, the opportunity to talk to these Nashos was a golden one. He took time to encourage those young men plucked from the streets of Australian cities, perhaps unaware of the horrors that lay ahead of them in the jungles of Vietnam.

The atmosphere changed depending on which way the bow was pointed. Heading north toward Vung Tàu, the ship was charged with a nervous, electric energy.

SAFE HARBOUR HMAS Sydney transported troops from Australia to Vietnam - and back home again after their tour of duty.

The Nashos spent those ten days in a blur of weapon drills and final briefings. For many, it was their first time leaving Australian waters.

Philip would see them leaning against the railings, staring at the wake, perhaps wondering if they were ready for what lay beyond the horizon.

The return journeys, however, were draped in a different silence. The men coming home were older than the ones who had left. They were “decompressing” - a modern term for a timeless process.

On the long transit back to Fremantle or Sydney, the “Ferry” became a sanctuary.

Philip watched on again between his duties for the Captain, as the tension slowly drained from their shoulders, replaced by the anticipation of a homecoming that only those who arrived by sea truly experienced. While some flew home in hours, those on the Sydney had twelve days to find themselves again.

By the time the Sydney made her 25th and final voyage in late 1972, she had transported over 16,000 personnel. She was a ship of transitions, carrying the weight of a nation’s controversy and the very personal burdens of the men on board.

For Philip, the memories aren’t just of the 5,000 tons of cargo or the escort ships on the flank; they are of the faces of the young men who passed through those passageways, caught between the life they knew and the war they would never forget.

Now living happily at Windsor Park in Perth, Philip reflects on those character-forming days aboard the HMAS Sydney.

Born in Subiaco and one of five boys raised by Gwen, he forged a career on the radio after leaving the Navy in 1974.

“I asked myself not what I could do next, but what I wanted to do,” he says. “My mother was so proud of me when she heard I’d landed a role on the radio in Kalgoorlie before then going to Perth on 6IX. “Mum taught me how to talk and listen more importantly,” he recalls.

• Total Voyages: 25 separate trips to Vietnam (Philip completed at least eight).

• Troops Transported: 16,094 personnel.

• Cargo: 5,753 tons of vital supplies.

• Hardware: 2,375 vehicles and 14 aircraft.

• Transit Time: 10-12 days each way.

It’s a skillset Philip still uses at Windsor Park, looking after the residents who perhaps cannot express themselves as well as he can.

“I’m like an unofficial gobetween for them, whether it’s helping them make a cup of coffee or just listening.”

For Philip, ANZAC Day is an opportunity for young men and women today to reflect on the sacrifice on all those Nashos who set off towards a horizon which for some, they would never return.

Answering

the call

When Windsor Park resident and veteran Andrew “Jimmy” Sharma looks back on his years in the Navy, one moment rises above all others - a rescue mission in the freezing, unforgiving waters of the Southern Ocean that would test every ounce of courage, skill and teamwork he and his fellow sailors possessed.

n the autumn sun, Andrew ‘Jimmy’ Sharma cuts a striking figure in the courtyard of Windsor Park.

With silver rings on almost every finger, an anchor necklace and a ‘Veteran Pride’ tattoo on the back of his neck, there’s no mistaking the fact that military service runs through this man’s DNA like a silken thread.

Now living at Windsor Park, Jimmy (as he prefers to be called) speaks with quiet humility about a life that has taken him across the world and into situations most of us could scarcely imagine.

He joined the Navy at just 16 years old, still finding his

place in the world, when he stepped into an environment that demanded discipline, resilience and trust.

“You had to grow up pretty quick,” he says. “It was a very big learning curve.”

Over 15 years of service, Jimmy worked as a combat systems operator, responsible for radars, missile systems and defensive operations aboard ship. It was a role that required calm under pressure and absolute reliance on the people around him, something that would become a defining feature of his experience in the Navy.

In 1997, while serving aboard HMAS Adelaide, Jimmy and his crewmates were called into action during the Christmas period to rescue two solo yachtsmen caught in peril during the Vendée Globe race. With many of the crew on leave, the ship departed with a skeleton crew and little time to prepare.

“There were two blokes out there who needed us,” Jimmy recalls. “Thousands of miles from Australia, in the middle of nowhere. No shipping lanes, nothing.

We just had to go.”

What followed was a race against time through some of the most dangerous waters on earth. Towering swells rose like walls around the ship, storm fronts battered the crew, and freezing conditions made every task more difficult.

“It was pretty hairy,” Jimmy says. “We’d be on the bridge looking up at the swell.”

With no time to collect proper Antarctic gear, the crew improvised. “We stuffed our jackets with rags just to keep warm,” he says. “We looked ridiculous, but it worked.”

The first sailor, Frenchman Thierry Dubois, was found drifting in a life raft. The second, British yachtsman Tony Bullimore, was trapped inside his overturned yacht, uncertain if rescue would come in time. The search was tense and uncertain, with limited information and vast ocean to cover.

“The keel came off like breaking a matchstick,” Mr Bullimore told the Associated Press after his ordeal, describing the moment when the key stabilizing part of his boat broke.

“It just went ‘snap.’ And within seconds, literally within a few seconds, the boat was sitting upside down with me sitting inside the boat, sitting and standing and sliding around on the roof, with water slowly seeping in.”

An unbelievable stroke of luck meant that Jimmy and his crew found Tony and Thierry, and brought the two sailors onboard to safety.

When both men were finally rescued, the sense of relief was immense.

“When he saw the warship there, he said it was like seeing a miracle,” Jimmy says.

Even then, the danger was not over. The ship had burned through fuel pushing south at speed, and in the heavy seas, running out of fuel was not an option. A complex refuelling operation at sea followed a rare and risky manoeuvre - but one that ultimately brought the crew safely home.

Looking back, Jimmy does not describe the mission as heroic. Instead, he reflects on the mindset that made it possible.

“The captain just said, ‘There’s two blokes that need us right now,’” he says. “And that was it. Everyone just got on with the job.”

That same sense of duty defined his time aboard HMAS Darwin during deployment to Kuwait as part of Australia’s contribution to Operation Desert Storm.

again. The friendships forged under pressure, the unspoken understanding between those who have served, and the unwavering instinct to look after one another.

These days, Jimmy speaks openly about the challenges that followed his service, including living with PTSD and the loss of fellow veterans.

But he is equally clear about the pride he feels, and the perspective his experiences have given him.

At just 20 years old, Jimmy was confronted with the reality of war in a way that few young people ever experience.

“You never felt safe,” he says.

“There were aircraft, missile alerts, sea mines - something was always going on.”

“We’d just come back from nine months away when we were told we were going to the Middle East,” he says.

“Leave was cancelled, body bags came on board, and we had to fill out our wills.”

And yet, even in that highpressure environment, there were moments of care and connection that stayed with him long after his service ended. When Jimmy turned 21 while deployed off the

“A mate said to me, ‘This could be the last time we see that,” Jimmy says. “That’s when it really hit.”

Life aboard HMAS Darwin was intense and relentless.

Alongside his fellow sailors, Jimmy worked across operations, air defence and naval gunfire support, often in six-hour rotations that blurred day and night into one continuous cycle.

We mattered when we served - and we still matter . . .

“They called me up to the flight deck, took me off duty and made me a cake,” he says.

“I didn’t realise it at the time, but later on I understood - I spent my 21st with the best blokes in the world.”

“I’m proud of that,” he says.

“They’ve never seen me like that before.”

For him though, even more important than his medals are the dog tags he retains.

“They’re more important than my medals - they change colour over the years that you wear them from green to bronze, through blood, sweat and tears.”

For Jimmy, service was never about recognition. It was about showing up when it mattered most, standing beside your mates, and doing what needed to be done, no matter how tough the circumstances may have been.

“We put our boots on; we mattered when we served - and we still matter,” says Jimmy.

“You never forget the people you served with,” he says.

“That’s the biggest thing.

That stays with you for life.”

War on the I Home Front

n 1921, cartoonist James Bancks created a red headed boy that was mischievous, skinny, fun loving and adventurous - his name was Ginger Meggs and he soon became a favourite of children and adults alike.

“Keeping Spirits High”

During World War II, men, women and children were all impacted by the stress and uncertainty of wartime that affected life as they knew it. The fun loving, adventurous Ginger Meggs provided them with a glimpse of a life that could still be happy, brave and a little bit cheeky.

Even the soldiers used Ginger Meggs’ attitude of steadfastness, cheekiness and resilience to keep their spirits high and his image was painted on the nose of some of their planes.

Back home, children were eager to help the war effort. Girls knitted socks, scarves and jumpers while boys took over the jobs previously done by their fathers. Salvage collection was also an important task.

Students and staff at a state school in Essendon formed the Ginger Meggs Salvage Corps. Using handmade billy carts and hand trucks, the children collected paper, cardboard, rubber and aluminium from the neighbourhood and on Saturday mornings, they gathered at school to sort the items for recycling.

After the Japanese capture of Malaya, there was a severe shortage of rubber and so the Ginger Meggs Salvage Corps sprang into action scouring streets, backyards and sheds for any rubber that could be used. As they roamed the streets searching for salvage, the students sang songs inspired by Ginger Meggs which brought a smile to the faces of people in the neighbourhood.

As the children went about the task of collecting salvage, they knew that they were contributing to the war effort in a practical way and giving support to their fathers who were fighting on the front lines.

At Glenwood Aged Care Home, NSW this sense of community was beautifully brought to life as staff recently came together to celebrate two expectant mums, Registered Nurse, Chandra and Personal Care Worker, Anita, who are both preparing to welcome baby boys. A Celebration Across Australia This year, our homes across the nation came together in joyful colour to mark Harmony Day. It was a heartfelt celebration of the rich stories, traditions and cultural heritage that shape our community. From delicious dishes shared between friends to music, dance and plenty of laughter, the day served as a powerful reminder of the warmth and connection that diversity brings.

Kensington Park: A Burst of Colour and Pride Kensington Park kicked off the celebrations with a spectacular display of cultural pride. Staff arrived dressed in traditional outfits from their home countries, posing for vibrant group and individual

photos with residents. They shared traditional foods, visited residents from roomto-room and filled the home with colour, music and heartfelt conversations.

The joy was contagious residents and families were deeply moved, with some shedding tears of happiness as they witnessed the pride and unity on display. It was a beautiful expression of what Harmony Day represents.

Belmont Aged Care Home: Smiles, Stories and Shared Traditions Belmont Aged Care Home also embraced Harmony Day in style. Director of Nursing Sonali Goel described the celebration as a moment that truly reflected the spirit of the Belmont community.

“With a beautiful theme, our residents, families and staff came together to share their cultures, stories and delicious food from around the world,” she said. “Moments like this show what makes the Belmont team so special a truly supportive, diverse and joyful community.”

Staff proudly introduced themselves in traditional outfits, shared greetings in their home languages and connected with residents through stories of heritage and family. The home was filled with smiles, conversation and a strong sense of togetherness.

Bexley Residents Get Harmonious What a week we enjoyed as we brought attention to Harmony Week 2026! Our whole home engaged in showcasing the themes of diversity and inclusion amongst our friendly and multi-cultural environment.

Activities that brought us together as one included guessing games (where is it from?), Bocce, international Bingo, food safari, quiz and trivia, dances from around the world, great moments in world music and lots of cultural movies from all around the globe!

Everyone was encouraged to wear orange on the day, which served to bring much bonding amongst residents as we all looked the same! Our entertainer came and sang songs from different countries, it was wonderful when she sang in both Greek and Italian, much to the delights of the residents.

We also enjoyed a special activity for our staff, which was a shared international lunch. As we are such a diverse group, we invited staff to contribute with a dish that represents their culture - what a truly international treat we all enjoyed! We are very lucky!

Celebrating Greece at Fairfield Fairfield, you’ve done it again - OPA! What a wonderful day we all enjoyed celebrating Greek Independence Day. It was Greece all around as we appreciated the Greek entertainers that arrived to sing and dance for us. The Greek music was uplifting and had us all listening and moving to the beat - some residents got up and enjoyed some wonderful dancing!

Our staff and some of our residents dressed up as the ancient Greek goddesses and had photos taken in all their finery. The kitchen put on a special Greek-themed spread that included yummy sweet and savory food. This was such a treat to experience a different culture’s cuisine, especially all the fresh and tasty foods enjoyed in this part of the world.

The big highlight was of course when the music changed to the famous Greek song ‘Zorba’s Dance’ – which everyone knows. We laughed and danced with residents and staff as the song lifted us into a very beautiful Greek moment!

Little ones bring joy to Kensington Park Our Kensington Park residents had a delightful intergenerational visit with the little ones at Kensington Montessori.

Together, they enjoyed arts and crafts outdoors with plenty of sunshine smiles! The young energy, cute giggles and never-ending curiosity, keep our residents well entertained during the visits, as they also enjoyed passing on their skills, simple life stories and gentle encouragement to the little ones.

Where colour meets connection If the walls of the gallery could talk, they would have heard stories, not just from the artwork hanging neatly in frames, but from our residents too.

On our recent outing, the gallery wasn’t simply a building filled with paintings. It became a space of conversation, memory, imagination and connection. Residents wandered slowly from piece to piece, pausing not just to observe, but to interpret. ‘It reminds me of . . .’ became the phrase of the day, sparking shared stories of childhood, travel adventures, careers and long forgotten hobbies.

Art has a beautiful way of unlocking memory without pressure. It invites reflection gently.

It gives space for opinion. It encourages curiosity. And most importantly, it creates moments of connection, not just between people and the artwork, but between people and each other.

Community engagement is not simply about leaving the home; it is about remaining part

of the world. By visiting the gallery, our residents weren’t spectators, they were participants in the cultural life of our community. They engaged with volunteers, admired local artists and contributed thoughtful conversations. These experiences reinforce identity, independence and belonging. They remind us that creativity and contribution do not retire.

Inspired from the exhibition, the day flowed into a hands-on craft session. Tables were filled with colour, texture and possibility. Some residents painted boldly. Others worked delicately and precisely. It’s never about perfection, it’s about expression. It supported fine motor skills, encouraged focus and built confidence. But above all, it sparked pride in themselves.

What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon by making pizzas!!

Residents at Windsor Park Nursing Home recently decided they wanted pizza to eat, so what better way to indulge them by getting them all cooking!?

As you can see, lots of fun was had and the pizzas were absolutely delicious. After all, cooking is the universal language of bringing people together and it was such a delight to see the smiles on the faces of both residents and staff.

Terracotta Warriors continue to astonish @ St Lukes Some lucky St Lukes residents headed off from their Subiaco home for a trip back in time.

They recently enjoyed a wonderful outing to the WA Museum Boola Bardip to see the internationally renowned Terracotta Warriors exhibition. The group explored the fascinating display, learning about the history of the ancient sculptures and the story behind their discovery in China.

Residents were impressed by the detail and scale of the warriors, sparking thoughtful conversation and shared reflections throughout the visit. It was a fantastic opportunity to experience world history up close and enjoy a cultural day out together.

Sculpture by the Sea wows on the beach

M

any residents from our homes in Perth paid a visit to this year’s Sculpture by the Sea which returned to Cottesloe in March.

It was more accessible than ever, thanks to a Lotterywest grant of $336,079 supporting nine days of beach matting.

This accessible matting allowed visitors with reduced mobility or who use wheelchairs to visit the beach between the Indiana Teahouse and the groyne.

This year’s exhibition saw 70 sculptures on display at Perth’s most famous beach, with artists from eight countries participating, including five artists from India who are part of an India Showcase.

Braemar House

Green thumbs at Braemar House The residents at Braemar House Aged Care Home pulled out their trowels and gardening gloves to pot some basil and rosemary to add to our garden outside the activity area. It was a wonderful way to enjoy the fresh air while getting hands in the soil and helping bring the garden to life.

Residents enjoyed the fragrant scents of the herbs and the chance to take part in creating a space that engages the senses. They also commented that it was a nice way to contribute to the home environment and enjoyed being outside in the shade.

Basil and rosemary were chosen for their beautiful aromas and ease of care, and residents will continue to help water and look after the plants as they grow. The is 44

becoming a lovely place to relax, connect with nature, and enjoy the sights, smells, and textures of the garden.

It will be fun to see the newly planted herbs grow over the following months!

All aboard to Elizabeth Quay

esidents from Freshwater Bay Aged Care Home enjoyed a lovely day out on a special outing to Elizabeth Quay recently.

The adventure began with a scenic drive to South Perth, where residents boarded the ferry for a relaxing trip across the river, taking in the beautiful views along the way.

Once we arrived, everyone enjoyed a gentle stroll across

the iconic pedestrian bridge, soaking up the vibrant atmosphere and waterfront scenery.

The outing was followed by a delicious fish and chips lunch and coffee at Amberjacks, which was the perfect way to relax and enjoy the day together.

With sunshine, fresh air, and wonderful company, it was truly a beautiful day out for all.

Subi cafe strip right on our doorstop Residents at St Lukes have been enjoying regular walks and coffee outings, making the most of the beautiful weather and time spent together.

Living in Subiaco means there are plenty of cafes on their doorstep to enjoy. These gentle walks provide a great opportunity to get some fresh air, stretch the legs, and enjoy a change of scenery.

Afterward, residents relax over a coffee and chat, sharing stories and plenty of laughs.

Dolphin day trip @ Tuia Lodge Blessed with a perfect summer’s day, a group of residents from Tuia Lodge toddled off up the road to Bunbury’s Dolphin Discovery Centre.

With a little time to spare we had a drive around the iconic parts of Bunbury, and everyone loving seeing the beach pumping on such a beautiful day. We drove by our hairdresser’s house, Charmaine, stopping briefly to sing a big happy 70th birthday to her - she was tickled pink.

Arriving at the aquarium it was time for the feeding in the big tank, with all sorts of interesting marine life living together, including a couple of sharks.

There was so much to see in the aquarium; the last time we visited, the octopus was hiding, but this time, to our delight, he was out and socialising.

By 12.30 we were in the restaurant enjoying a lovely lunch of, you guessed it, fish and chips, snapper at that. Everyone was so full that there were no takers for a Maccas soft serve. Unheralded!

Redland High School boys bring music and joy to our residents We were delighted to welcome the talented boys from Redland High School, who recently performed a special concert for our residents.

Their enthusiasm and musical skill created a lively and uplifting atmosphere that was enjoyed by everyone in attendance.

The program featured a wonderful mix of pieces, showcasing both individual talent and the strength of the group. Residents were particularly touched by the students’ energy and the joy they brought into the room, with many smiling, clapping along, and reminiscing about their own school days.

Her Voice, Our Celebration: International Women’s Day @ Clover Lea The women of Clover Lea gathered together and celebrated International Women’s Day with something very special; for the first time, we welcomed an opera singer, Yasmin Arkinstall. Her beautiful voice filled the home, and residents, families, and staff paused to listen, some closing their eyes, some smiling quietly.

Our home is full of strong women, residents and staff alike.

Today we talked about women’s strength, equal rights, and the beauty of supporting each other.

This celebration was for our residents, for our staff, and for all of us, as women.

Our residents enjoyed a concert with entertainer ‘Eleni’. There was lots of singing and dancing as we had fun before we settled into our afternoon tea where we discussed what strong women figures we have enjoyed in our lives. The answers were so interesting to hear and ranged from global matriarch ‘Mother Theresa’ to ‘Princess of Hearts, ‘Diana Spencer’.

We encouraged all our staff and residents to use International Women’s Day as a chance to thank the women in our lives for their vitally important roles; whether they are your mothers, grandmothers, partners, daughters, relatives, colleagues or friends; a small thank you for all that they do can mean the world.

We sincerely enjoyed this event at our home to honour and recognize the amazing stories that our women residents and staff have to tell.

The room was decorated with beautiful tables with pink handmade flowers, inspirational quotes for women and sweet chocolate love hearts.

Residents had tea and coffee and an assortment of delicious morning tea.

Tash spoke about an inspirational woman Getrude Ederle who was the first woman to swim the English Channel - what an amazing woman!

Getting crafty with Bunnings @ Villa D

I

n early February, some of our Villa Dalmacia residents enjoyed a wonderful creative session when the friendly team from Bunnings Warehouse Australia.

Together, they worked on a hands-on project to create personalised cup placemats using colourful tiles. The activity brought plenty of smiles as residents designed their own unique patterns, choosing colours and arranging tiles to reflect their personal style.

Chinese cooking demo at Clarence Estate To celebrate Chinese New Year, our Clarence Chef, Michael and maintenance man, Dave hosted a special Chinese cooking demonstration for residents.

The afternoon featured a delicious selection including honey chicken with honey soy sauce, crispy spring rolls, and a refreshing lychee sago pudding. Residents enjoyed watching the dishes come together while learning about traditional flavours and cooking techniques.

To add to the festive spirit, Chinese red envelopes filled with “lucky” money were prepared and handed out to those who answered quiz questions correctly. Fun facts about Chinese new year and traditions were shared throughout the session, bringing culture and a little friendly competition into the room.

The result? Full bellies, happy smiles, and residents leaving the session satisfied after enjoying their own taste of China.

Learning to make lovely Lamingtons For our Karingal Green cooking activity, we thought making our very own Lamingtons would tie in well with Australia Day being an iconic Aussie sweet treat.

Residents enjoyed coating the Lamingtons in coconut and reported they tasted delicious - more please!

A gala experience for Menaville

During the Sydney Seniors Festival in March, we had a lovely trip to the Premier’s Gala Concert at the Tik Tok Entertainment Centre (formerly the ICC) in Darling Harbour.

Our residents thoroughly enjoyed the free concert experience that featured wonderful performances by Jay Laga’aia, Nathan Foley, Dami Im, and Tarryn Stokes and Todd McKenney.

Cheers to World Nutella Day W orld Nutella Day on February 5 was celebrated at Agmaroy with a delicious Nutella drink, in some very special beautifully decorated glassware.

The sweet paste of the first recipe was shaped into a loaf that could be sliced and spread on bread, named after a local carnival character (Giandujot).

Celebrating 62 years of being many people’s favourite choc spread, here are some fun facts about Nutella:

The ‘Giandujot’ paste was transformed into a creamy new product that was easier to spread. It was known as SuperCrema.

After World War II, cocoa was extremely scarce. Ferrero, originally from Piedmont in Italy, turned this tricky problem into a smart solution by creating a sweet paste made from hazelnuts, sugar and just a little of the rare cocoa. The precursor to Nutella was born.

In 1964, the recipe was improved, leading to the creation of the first-ever jar of hazelnut and cocoa cream. Nutella was officially born.

On February 5, 2007, Italian-American blogger Sara Russo mobilised all Nutella lovers to unite in celebration of the beloved and iconic breakfast hazelnut spread.

Since then, World Nutella Day has been celebrated every year since then.

Trip back in time for Villa D residents We enjoyed a wonderful visit from Cockburn Council and a local history member, who brought along a fascinating collection of artefacts for our residents to explore.

St Patrick’s Day morning tea @ Agmaroy Agmaroy In honour of Ireland’s patron saint, we held a delightful morning tea at Agmaroy this week - and of course all things green was the theme.

With sparkly green bowties, bowler hats, Guinness and green drinks, it was a morning to remember for all.

Green is our favourite colour @ Freshwater Bay Luck was certainly on our side at Freshwater Bay as residents celebrated St Patrick’s Day a few weeks ago.

The afternoon was filled with laughter, chatter, and plenty of cheer, complemented by a delightful afternoon tea and special themed cupcakes.

It was a truly merry occasion, and everyone left with smiles as bright as a pot of gold!

St Patrick’s Day shenanigans at Georges Estate

H

ere at Georges Estate, we began our St Patrick’s Day celebration a few days before St Pat’s Day with craft group, making little leprechaun hats. Everyone left our craft activity a littler greener as we prepared for March 17.

between sliced pickled pork neck or lamb and vegetable shepherd’s pie, both served with parsley mashed potato, braised green cabbage, honey roasted carrots and peas. And for dessert, a delicious Guinness chocolate cake with Bailey’s cream - a very Irish feast indeed!

The morning started with an Irish-themed scavenger hunt, our group combed the garden looking for rainbows, gold coins and leprechauns. What fun we had searching together for that pot of gold!

Later in the afternoon our concert was all Irish.

The room was decorated with shamrocks and green and gold balloons. Entertainer Alison serenaded the residents with Irish songs that we couldn’t help but sing-along too. There were of course some cheeky Irish jokes as we drank our Guinness and green lemonade.

Raise a glass at Hamersley’s Irish pub (for the day) To celebrate St Patrick’s Day, Hamersley rolled out the barrel and created its very own Irish pub for the day.

All types of potatoes were the dish of the day including chips, crisps and mash!

Residents posed behind a special clover leaf frame and dressed up for the occasion, with some even dancing an Irish jig. What fun!

A very St Patrick’s Day celebration @ Vaucluse The spirit of St. Patrick’s Day came alive in our courtyard this month as the residents and staff gathered outdoors to celebrate in a joyful and festive and green atmosphere!

With the sunshine above and plenty of green all around, the day was filled with laughter, music, and wonderful shared moments. A special highlight of the celebration was our guest entertainer, Grant, who brought incredible energy and warmth to the event. His lively singing had everyone tapping their feet, and before long, residents and staff were up dancing and joining in the fun!

Crafting for St Patrick’s Day Wycombe Grove residents in High Wycombe took part in a fun craft activity where they created decorations to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. During the session, residents used coloured paper, markers, and craft materials to make shamrocks, banners, and festive green decorations to display around the facility.

Who needs gold when we’ve got leprechaun top hats, ties and great company?!

A shamrock good time @ Aubrey Downer Our residents here at Aubrey Downer enjoyed making their own shamrocks, which serve as a national emblem of Ireland.

We enjoyed learning about this plant’s connection to the Irish as it is famously associated with St Patrick, who allegedly used its three leaves to explain the Holy Trinity.

Later we had a lovely concert to celebrate St Patrick’s Day

in our Jeffress Lodge. The ‘Windygigs’ performed several Irish songs that had us all up and dancing the jig! They were dressed in green as their Flutes and Clarinets echoed uplifting Irish music through the facility.

The activity encouraged creativity, social interaction, and a sense of involvement as residents enjoyed working together and contributing to the festive atmosphere for St Paddy’s Day!

It was joyous to see the residents smiling and laughing as they danced, tapped their feet and sang along to some wonderful Irish favourites!

L&L What made you want to become an aged care worker?

TB I wanted to become a care worker to help fulfill the nations need and to help vulnerable and elderly people feel safe and respected.

L&L How long have you worked in aged care and when did you join Hall & Prior?

TB I have been working in aged care for 13 years. I joined Hall & Prior in April 2012 and have enjoyed over 10 working for this organisation.

L&L What does an average day look like for you?

TB An average day consists of a thorough hand over at the start of my shift and then I delegate tasks to care staff. I also assist with medications and help with doctors’ rounds.

My whole day runs around things like wound management, health evaluations, carer management and care plan updates.

L&L Tell us about one part of your job that makes you feel really rewarded and connected to those you work with?

TB I love assisting and educating new staff members. The education part of my role is of particular interest to me as I love to pass on knowledge and help carers deliver the best possible results to our residents.

L&L What is the best piece of advice you ever got about caring for others and from who?

TB My best piece of advice was ‘do not be afraid to ask questions or ask for help’.

Our roles are very busy and demanding with many people to care for, so you cannot be afraid to ask questions - knowledge is the power that helps our residents lives run smoothly. Teamwork and communication keep everyone safe.

I love MY CHILDREN Imogen and Jack are without question two of the greatest parts of my life. No matter what I’ve achieved in work or business, nothing means more to me than being their dad. They keep me grounded and remind me what matters most.

I love THE WORK THAT I DO Cooking has never just been a job to me.

It’s been my purpose, my identity and my way of caring for people. Whether it’s creating meals, mentoring staff, building menus or helping businesses grow, I’ve always loved the difference good food can make in people’s lives.

I love MY TEAM AT HOCART LODGE Leading the kitchen team at Hocart Lodge is something I’m incredibly proud of. Aged care is about so much more than food - it’s about dignity, comfort and genuine care. I’m lucky to work alongside a wonderful team who put their hearts into what they do every single day.

I love MY MENTORS My nan and my mum are where it all began. They taught me how to cook, but more importantly they taught me what food really means. Food was love, comfort, family and connection. That lesson stayed with me and became the foundation for everything I’ve done since.

I love HOSPITALITY I’ve had the privilege of running three restaurants, and that journey taught me so much about leadership, pressure, creativity and resilience. Hospitality is tough, but I’ve always loved the energy of it - the rush, the challenge and the chance to create something people remember.

WITH THE WORLD

One of the most surreal parts of my journey has been seeing where food can take you. From TV appearances to cookbooks, magazine features, radio spots (I’m currently on a weekly spot on 6PR in Perth) and online content watched by millions, I’ve been lucky enough to share what I love on a stage much bigger than I ever expected. It’s been an incredible ride, but at the core of it all I’m still just someone who loves feeding people.

Nicko’s Kitchen started as a passion and became something far bigger than I ever imagined. It grew into one of the world’s biggest online cooking communities, with more than 1 million YouTube subscribers, close to 2 million followers across Facebook and Instagram, and over half a billion views. Through that journey, my recipes reached people all over the world and created a connection with home cooks everywhere.

These days, one of the most rewarding things is sharing what I’ve learned.

I love mentoring others, building teams and helping people grow in confidence and skill.

Experience means the most when you can use it to lift others up.
