MAKE A WISH…

WELCOME DYNNARGH

Welcome to our latest Cornwall Playhouse season. In the following pages we welcome back partner organisations Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), Rambert and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in a programme laden with big new drama, dance and musicals, a summer week with Derren Brown, the return of Agatha Christie with Death on the Nile and a huge new musical celebrating the iconic songs of Steps Young audiences remain at the heart of our programme: families will delight in next winter’s hottest ticket, the Cornwall Playhouse Production of Aladdin, alongside a selection of family-friendly delights including Dinosaur World Live, Pirates Love Underpants and the RSC’s First Encounters King Lear. Introducing young people in Cornwall to the transformative power of culture is in our DNA as a charity –over the page you’ll see how our youth Get Creative programme sparks imaginations, nurtures talent and fosters wellbeing. It’s all part of our drive to engage more than 11,000 young people in Cornwall this year. And now for our biggest news - as part of their commitment to Cornwall and HfC, the RSC have chosen the Cornwall Playhouse to open their huge national tour of Rupert Goold ’s landmark Hamlet in 2026. The production reimagines Shakespeare’s dark tale onto a stricken ocean liner, a neat fit with our heritage of seafaring and shipwrecks! Dig in, enjoy browsing and we look forward to welcoming you soon.

COMING SOON OW TOS SKON

The Royal Shakespeare Company returns to Truro with a ‘must-see’ (Guardian) new production of Hamlet, opening this brand-new national tour on the Cornwall Playhouse stage. Hamlet’s mother has married his uncle, and at a less than decent interval since the death of his father. As he pulls at the threads of his not-so-happy new family, Hamlet unravels a web of deceit and immorality that leads to the ultimate crisis of conscience.

Fresh from its run in Stratford-upon-Avon, this ‘scintillating new staging’ (Financial Times) of Shakespeare’s famous revenge drama begins its major national tour at the Cornwall Playhouse. The stellar creative team is led by multi-award-winning director Rupert Goold whose recent work includes Dear England (National Theatre) and King Charles III (Almeida Theatre).

MATTHEW BOURNE’S NEW ADVENTURES RETURN TO CORNWALL THIS MAY!

Matthew Bourne’s multi award-winning New Adventures company return to Hall for Cornwall for the first time in over a decade with The Midnight Bell.

In 1930s London ordinary people emerge from cheap boarding houses nightly to pour out their passions, hopes and dreams in the pubs and fog-bound streets of Soho and Fitzrovia.

Step inside The Midnight Bell, a tavern where one particular lonely-hearts club gather to play out their lovelorn affairs of the heart; bitter comedies of longing, frustration, betrayal and redemption.

Hailed by The Observer as ‘the undisputed king of dance theatre’, master storyteller Matthew Bourne has created some of the most successful dance productions of the last thirty years including Swan Lake, Cinderella, The Red Shoes, Romeo and Juliet and Edward Scissorhands.

REBECCA EVANS AND TOMÁŠ HANUS WITH WNO ORCHESTRA

Weber Overture from Der Freischütz (The Marksman) Mozart Ah, lo previdi Beethoven Symphony No 3 Eroica

Tomáš Hanus, conductor Rebecca Evans, soprano

Internationally renowned soprano Rebecca Evans joins forces with the celebrated Welsh National Opera Orchestra, with WNO Music Director Tomáš Hanus at the podium, for a delightful summer concert.

With a wonderful mix of repertoire, the concert begins with the rousing overture to Weber’s Romantic opera Der Freischütz (The Marksman) and continues with the sublime Mozart concert aria Ah, lo previdi sung by Rebecca Evans, which tells of the myth of Andromeda and her sacrifice.

The concert concludes with the brilliance and enduring beauty of Beethoven and the magnificent Third Symphony Eroica, one of the composer’s most celebrated works and considered to be a landmark in the transition from the Classical to the Romantic era.

12 JUL 4PM

BOURNEMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Smetana Overture from The Bartered Bride Dvořák Cello Concerto Beethoven Symphony No.7

Enyi Okpara, conductor Johannes Moser, cello

The BSO is delighted to bring star cellist, Johannes Moser to Hall for Cornwall.

Smetana’s joyous overture from The Bartered Bride is at the heart of what comic opera is all about: drama, excitement and bold character. Folk-like elements and bold, rich orchestrations bring it to life, making it one of the most exciting overtures ever composed.

Written at the end of Dvořák ’s three-year contract in New York, the Cello Concerto reflects some of his American experiences but is at the same time filled with the spirit of his beloved Bohemia where he longed to return.

Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony’s appeal is not hard to understand. Described by Wagner as “the apotheosis of the dance”, with boundless energy and rhythmic impetus the music rages forward, almost demonically, with climax after climax, right to the brilliant final notes.

WHAT’S ON DARVOSOW

ARDAL O’HANLON: NOT HIMSELF

After an alarming experience at the supermarket, Ardal reflects on who he is as a man and a comedian. He examines his own ethnic and religious background. And thinks twice about the very core of his identity as a voice of reason. No current idiocy is left un-examined. With a highly developed sense of the ridiculous, and proper comedy bones, NOT HIMSELF, is a testament to the healing power of humour. And the joy of jokes.
