CHORAL PREPARATION

The drive and energy in the song comes from its lively 12/8 time signature. Have singers experience the feeling of 12/8 by clapping (or tapping) the dotted quarter note steady beat. Consider drawing twelve eighth notes in a horizontal row on the board or screen. Explain that the twelve eighth notes are felt as four strong beats, or four dotted quarter notes. Each dotted quarter note equals three eighth notes.

PERFORMANCE NOTES

Dolly Parton is one of the most beloved singer songwriters of all-time. This medley features three of her most popular songs: “Jolene,” “Nine to Five,” and “I Will Always Love You.”

“Jolene” was one of Dolly Parton‘s first songs. Numerous artists have recorded the song and is still considered one of the most representative songs of the country genre.

The song “Nine to Five” was the theme song for the award-winning movie of the same name. The song reached number one on the country charts winning two Grammy awards, Best Country Song, and Song of the Year.

“I Will Always Love You,” was written as a farewell to Dolly Parton’s business partner who gave her a start in the music business, Porter Wagoner. Whitney Houston later recorded a ballad arrangement of the song for the 1992 movie, The Bodyguard. The song was a huge success becoming the best-selling single of 1992.

For some time I have wanted to write a composition that reflected what it means to feel two different ways at the same time. I planned to show this musically through overlapping major and minor tonalities. As I began to develop lyrics, I thought specifically of times I had “mixed feelings” about a choice or situation. With that in mind, I tried to capture the uneasiness of this experience through quick harmonic shifts between C major and C minor and cross-rhythms of two against three. I intend this composition to help singers explore what it feels like to have conflicting emotions and to know they are not alone.

Philip E. Silvey is Professor of Music Teaching and Learning at the Eastman School of Music where he directs the Treble Chorus and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education. He has served as guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator in numerous states. His original choral compositions and arrangements have been performed by all-state and national honors choruses.

Social Emotional Learning Experiences are short, semi-structured learning tasks that invite ensemble participants to reflect or share in ways that help them build skills related to life competencies. These tasks often start with a thought-provoking prompt. Under careful supervision, participants write anonymous reflections, contribute to group discussions, or respond creatively.

Self Talk

Think of a positive step you could take that would benefit you and others—something you can do but haven’t tried. Perhaps you’ve reached legal driving age and could help transport younger siblings but you haven’t gotten your license. Reflect on how you’ve talked yourself out of it and write down this “self talk” anonymously on a slip of paper. Collect and read them aloud. What common themes emerge? Next, compose alternate statements you might use to encourage yourself to act, including how taking this step could positively affect others. In small groups, create a one-minute sketch to dramatize this inner debate Share these and discuss which voice was most convincing and why.

“Beebop City” is a fun, upbeat swing tune that captures the lively energy of a jazz metropolis and serves as a great vehicle for working on swing style, syncopation, and jazz language.

CHORAL PREPARATION

For an authentic swing feel, the diction approach should be conversational, and singers should give syncopated notes a light accent (like buzzin’ and groovin’ in meas. 5 and 7 and the words can and plan in meas. 13). Accents can be done by giving a slight push to the breath as opposed to hitting the consonants harder.

Singers should stay legato to prevent a bouncy or rushed feel. Practice with a metronome to lock in a solid quarter note feel. This will help keep consecutive syncopations from rushing (as in meas. 13) and help lock in “downbeat-heavy” phrases like right before my eyes (meas. 31-32).

At the ends of syncopated phrases (like city and gritty in meas. 37 and 39), give a bit of length to those last notes rather than letting them feel clipped.

In scat moments (like meas. 19-20), syllables should be under-pronounced and delivered smoothly. The scat section (meas. 47-62) is optional. You may perform it with the choir, small group, or soloists – or you may omit it altogether and cut from m. 46 to m. 63.

LYRICIST

Gary Eckert has three Grammy nods, singing on two nominated works by Bobby McFerrin for 2010 and one Grammy Winner for 2021 by Lyle Mays. He holds three degrees from the University of North Texas including a 2021 Masters in Philosophy focusing on AI Ethics, with additional study in poetry. Touring and recording with McFerrin, he performed as a vocalist/percussionist at The Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. He has written and produced for NBC and ESPN. See his work at GaryEckert.com

Rosana Eckert is a Grammy recognized vocalist, songwriter, arranger, and educator. She teaches jazz voice and songwriting at the University of North Texas and is in demand as a performer, clinician/adjudicator, guest conductor, and choral arranger. The name, Lorelei, originates from German tradition and references a rocky cliff on the beautiful river, Rhine. A winsome woman with an enchanting voice was said to live among the rocks and would sing to the sailors who passed by.

CHORAL PREPARATION

The flowing folksong-like nature of this anthem turns the choir into troubadours sharing a story.

The theme calls for expressive, legato singing while encouraging an almost conversational clarity for the lyric. The rise and fall in the melodic contours mimic the sway of the ocean tides and offers a key to finding dynamic diversity for the interpretation.

From ppp to ff, this dynamic range is the heart of the anthems appeal and presents a wonderful opportunity for interpretive nuance and artistry.

COMPOSER

Joseph M. Martin earned his Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina and a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at the University of Texas, Austin. In 2025, Joseph received the Honorary Doctorate degree in Fine Arts from Furman University. Recognized throughout the United States for his many choral compositions, both sacred and secular, Joseph’s music is published by numerous publishing houses. With over two thousand compositions in print, his works have been performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and numerous venues around the world.
