Hallein harbours a real treasure: the town on the Salzach has one of the most unspoilt old town centres in Austria. As you stroll through the small, winding alleyways and across the spacious squares, you will experience the magic of a town whose historic centre dates back to the Middle Ages. The geographical conditions - the Salzach river on one side and the Dürrnberg mountain on the other - set a natural limit to Hallein‘s growth. As a result, the town‘s development was already complete by the 15th century.

As you stroll through Hallein, you will see traces of centuries of salt production everywhere. The colourful town houses with their magnificent window and gable decorations are a beautiful testimony to

the prosperity that the salt trade brought with it. But Hallein was not only famous for its salt, one of the town‘s residents also achieved world fame: Franz Xaver Gruber, who composed the melody to ‘Silent Night! Holy Night!“, lived in Hallein for many years. A museum was opened in his honour and his grave is also located in Hallein‘s old town.

And the Dürrnberg, Hallein‘s local mountain, watches over everything. The Au-Gut campsite is small and beautiful, just 3 kilometres from Hallein. One side of the campsite borders directly onto a large meadow with an unobstructed view of the mountains. Families with children feel just as at home on the 0.5-hectare site as couples.

Soft grass or practical gravel form the surface of the pitches. Incidentally, a large part of the site is not parcelled out - so you can enjoy a special feeling of freedom when camping. In summer, large trees provide pleasant shade. The small stream that flows through the campsite is particularly popular with children. How easy it is to get to us in Hallein

The town of Hallein is very favourably located in terms of transport geography. Whether you come by car, hire car, train or plane - the connection to the city of Hallein is ideal

The best way to reach Hallein by car is via the A10, the Tauern-Highway. Take the ‘Hallein’ exit (Exit 16) and follow the signs to ‘Zentrum’. At the Pernerinsel car park and the centre car park you can park for 3 hours free of charge and for a maximum of EUR 6 per day. If you are travelling by train, get off at Hallein main station. You can reach the city centre on foot, by public bus or by taxi. Travelling to Salzburg by plane? Salzburg Airport W. A. Mozart is located just 20 kilometres north of Hallein. You can easily and conveniently reach the city of Hallein after your flight by taxi or public transport. At Salzburg Airport, take bus number 2, which will take you to Salzburg Central Station. From there you can reach Hallein in no time at all by train or S-Bahn (S3) or bus lines 160 or 170.

Take a trip to the city of Salzburg or to the mountains of Salzburger Land - the Tennengau Ticket will get you there free of charge and in an environmentally friendly way.

If you are on holiday in Hallein/Bad Dürrnberg, you will receive the Tennengau PlusCard. With this guest card you can use all public bus lines and the S-Bahn between the city of Salzburg and the Tennengau region free of charge.

On the buses you will receive a ticket on presentation of the Tennengau PlusCard, and the guest card is valid as a ticket on the railway.
